Polydimethylsiloxane Composites Characterization and Its Applications: A Review

Ultra-small gold nanoparticles embedded cyclodextrin metal-organic framework composite membrane to achieve antibacterial and humidity-responsive functions

Cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) is an edible and porous material that can serve as a template for synthesizing small-sized metal nanoparticles. However, its highly hydrophilic nature has limited its wider application. Herein, ultra-small gold nanoparticles (U-AuNPs) were loaded into CD-MOF to produce a composite material Au@CD-MOF. The CD-MOF was utilized as a template to control the size of the AuNPs. The synthesized Au@CD-MOF was easily dispersible in aqueous medium and its released U-AuNPs exhibited effective water dispersion stability within 120 days. Additionally, compared to gold nanoparticles prepared using traditional methods (T-AuNPs), the U-AuNPs exhibited superior antibacterial properties. Furthermore, hydrophilic Au@CD-MOF was incorporated into a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix (Au@CD-MOF/PDMS) to achieve a humidity-responsive antibacterial function. The composite membrane exhibited remarkable responsiveness to humidity, showing almost no release of U-AuNPs at 0 % humidity. However, it exhibited approximately 89 % release within 1 h, and complete release of U-AuNPs was observed within 4 h under 100 % humidity. These findings highlight the successful preparation of a humidity-responsive antibacterial composite membrane, which has great potential applications in various scenarios, particularly in the field of antibacterial food packaging.

Capturing physiological hemodynamic flow and mechanosensitive cell signaling in vessel-on-a-chip platforms

Recent advances in organ chip (or, "organ-on-a-chip") technologies and microphysiological systems (MPS) have enabled in vitro investigation of endothelial cell function in biomimetic three-dimensional environments under controlled fluid flow conditions. Many current organ chip models include a vascular compartment; however, the design and implementation of these vessel-on-a-chip components varies, with consequently varied impact on their ability to capture and reproduce hemodynamic flow and associated mechanosensitive signaling that regulates key characteristics of healthy, intact vasculature. In this review, we introduce organ chip and vessel-on-a-chip technology in the context of existing in vitro and in vivo vascular models. We then briefly discuss the importance of mechanosensitive signaling for vascular development and function, with focus on the major mechanosensitive signaling pathways involved. Next, we summarize recent advances in MPS and organ chips with an integrated vascular component, with an emphasis on comparing both the biomimicry and adaptability of the diverse approaches used for supporting and integrating intravascular flow. We review current data showing how intravascular flow and fluid shear stress impacts vessel development and function in MPS platforms and relate this to existing work in cell culture and animal models. Lastly, we highlight new insights obtained from MPS and organ chip models of mechanosensitive signaling in endothelial cells, and how this contributes to a deeper understanding of vessel growth and function in vivo. We expect this review will be of broad interest to vascular biologists, physiologists, and cardiovascular physicians as an introduction to organ chip platforms that can serve as viable model systems for investigating mechanosensitive signaling and other aspects of vascular physiology.

Effect of polydimethylsiloxane on the structure and barrier properties of starch/PBAT composite films

This study aimed to investigate the effects of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a low surface energy on the structure and physicochemical properties of starch/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blown films. The film's appearance was not significantly changed after the addition of PDMS. Compared with the films without PDMS, the films with PDMS displayed a smoother surface. A 2% w/w PDMS addition resulted in the maximum mechanical properties (8.10 MPa of strength, 211.00% of modulus) and surface hydrophobicity (87°) of the films. By contrast, the film with 3% w/w PDMS showed the lowest light transmittance, water vapor (2.73 × 10-11 g·cm·cm2·s-1·Pa-1) and oxygen permeability (9.73 × 10-13·cm3·cm·cm-2·s-1·Pa-1), owing to the improved tightness of the matrix, which increased the zigzag path for molecules to pass through. Films with higher PDMS contents effectively extended the shelf life of packaged bananas and shiitake mushrooms, benefiting from the outstanding and appropriate barrier properties, according to principal component analysis results. Findings supported that high-content starch/PBAT films containing PDMS had potential in the preservation of fresh agricultural products.

Evaluation of Fluorescence-Based Screening Assays for the Detection and Quantification of Silyl Hydrolase Activity

This study reports the development of fluorometric assays for the detection and quantification of silyl hydrolase activity using silicatein as a model enzyme. These assays employed a series of organosilane substrates containing either mycophenolate or umbelliferone moieties, which become fluorescent upon hydrolysis of a scissile Si-O bond. Among these substrates, the mycophenolate-derived molecule MycoF, emerged as the most promising candidate due to its relative stability in aqueous media, which resulted in good differentiation between the enzyme-catalyzed and uncatalyzed background hydrolysis. The utility of MycoF was also demonstrated in the detection of enzyme activity in cell lysates and was found to be capable of qualitative identification of positive "hit" candidates in a high-throughput format. These fluorogenic substrates were also suitable for use in quantitative kinetic assays, as demonstrated by the acquisition of their Michaelis-Menten parameters.

Wastewater Treatment Using High-Performance In Situ Formed Double-Heterojunction Janus Photocatalyst Microparticles Shaped via a Microfluidic Device

In this work, a heterogeneous photocatalysis system is fabricated for treating wastewater containing organic dyes and pharmaceutical substances. Double-heterojunction Janus photocatalysts are formed on the surface of size-tunable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microparticles shaped via simple and low-cost coflow microfluidic devices. Ag0/Ag0-TiO2/TiO2 Janus-like photocatalysts are synthesized on the surface of porous PDMS microparticles as the support in which the metal-semiconductor heterojunction of Ag0/Ag0-TiO2 and the second heterojunction of Ag0-TiO2/TiO2 are created in situ, leading to the formation of Ag0/Ag0-TiO2/TiO2@PDMS photocatalysis systems. To form the heterojunctions on the PDMS surface, the polymer chain etching method is employed as a desired strategy to have half of the TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of microparticles, which are treated by a Ag source. Using salt additives and the etching method, PDMS microparticles are made porous, providing more surface area for photoreactions. Surprisingly, the highest decomposition efficiencies of 94.4 and 91.1% are achieved for rhodamine B(RhB) and tetracycline (TC), respectively, under visible light for 60 min pH 11, a light source at a distance of 2 cm, 5 mM AgNO3, 10 wt % TiO2, 7 wt % NaCl, and 20 gm/L photocatalyst, which are conditions that result in the best performance for RhB degradation. Regarding the stability of the photocatalysts, no significant change is observed in the performance after five cycles.

Photoacoustic method for measuring the elasticity of polydimethylsiloxane at various mixing ratios

Measuring elasticity without physical contact is challenging, as current methods often require deconstruction of the test sample. This study addresses this challenge by proposing and testing a photoacoustic effect-based method for measuring the elasticity of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at various mixing ratios, which may be applied on the wide range of applications such as biomedical and optical fields. A dual-light laser source of the photoacoustic (PA) system is designed, employing cross-correlation signal processing techniques. The platform systems and a mathematical model for performing PDMS elasticity measurements are constructed. During elasticity detection, photoacoustic signal features, influenced by hardness and shapes, are analyzed using cross-correlation calculations and phase difference detection. Results from phantom tests demonstrate the potential of predicting Young's modulus using the cross-correlation method, aligning with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard samples. However, accuracy may be affected by mixed materials and short tubes. Normalization or calibration of signals is suggested for aligning with Young's coefficient.

Advancing Tissue Culture with Light-Driven 3D-Printed Microfluidic Devices

Three-dimensional (3D) printing presents a compelling alternative for fabricating microfluidic devices, circumventing certain limitations associated with traditional soft lithography methods. Microfluidics play a crucial role in the biomedical sciences, particularly in the creation of tissue spheroids and pharmaceutical research. Among the various 3D printing techniques, light-driven methods such as stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), and photopolymer inkjet printing have gained prominence in microfluidics due to their rapid prototyping capabilities, high-resolution printing, and low processing temperatures. This review offers a comprehensive overview of light-driven 3D printing techniques used in the fabrication of advanced microfluidic devices. It explores biomedical applications for 3D-printed microfluidics and provides insights into their potential impact and functionality within the biomedical field. We further summarize three light-driven 3D printing strategies for producing biomedical microfluidic systems: direct construction of microfluidic devices for cell culture, PDMS-based microfluidic devices for tissue engineering, and a modular SLA-printed microfluidic chip to co-culture and monitor cells.

Water-Soluble, Self-Healing, and Debonding Primer for the Interface between Silicone Leather and Polydimethylsiloxane Composites

The exceptional hydrophobicity and antifouling properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites have attracted extensive interest as a result of low surface energy. However, PDMS composites are hardly bound by common primers, greatly limiting their practical applications. To address this issue, an EPMS/VTMS (EV) primer synthesized by hydrolytic polycondensation of 3-[(2,3)-epoxypropoxypropyl]methyldiethoxysilane (EPMS) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) in acidic conditions is proposed. Interestingly, the EV primer exhibits exceptional reactivity, self-healing capabilities, and strong adhesion to various substrates, including metals, plastics, and glass. The bonding aluminum plates are easily debonded by immersion in water without any residue left. Subsequently, the EV primer has been applied to the interface between silicone leather and the PDMS composite. Results show that the bonding strength for the silicone leather coated with the EV/PDMS composite is 16 times higher than that of the silicone leather modified with the PDMS composite. Meanwhile, the modified silicone leather exhibits impressive antifouling performance, including aqueous and oily stains, appreciable breathability, and excellent wear resistance, even if suffering from 20 000 cycles of abrasion. These excellent advantages for the modified silicone leather should be attributable to the synergistic effect of the EV primer and the PDMS composite. These findings pave the way to develop an ecofriendly debonding primer for PDMS composites, greatly facilitating applications of silicone leather.

Constructing Self-Healing Polydimethylsiloxane through Molecular Structure Design and Metal Ion Bonding

Self-healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has garnered significant attention due to its potential applications across various fields. In this study, a functionalized modification of PDMS containing di-aminos was initially conducted using 2,6-pyridinedicarbonyl chloride to synthesize pyridine-PDMS (Py-PDMS). Subsequently, rare earth metal europium ions (Eu3+) were incorporated into Py-PDMS. Due to the coordination interaction between Eu3+ and organic ligands, a coordination cross-linking network was created within the Py-PDMS matrix, resulting in the fabrication of Eu3+-Py-PDMS elastomer. At a molar ratio of Eu3+ to ligands of 1:1, the tensile strength of Eu3+-Py-PDMS reached 1.4 MPa, with a fracture elongation of 824%. Due to the dynamic reversibility of coordination bonds, Eu3+-Py-PDMS with a metal-to-ligand molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited varying self-healing efficiencies at different temperatures. Notably, after 4 h of repair at 60 °C, its self-healing efficiency reached nearly 100%. Furthermore, the gas barrier properties of Eu3+-Py-PDMS with a molar ratio of 1:1 was improved compared with that of Eu3+-Py-PDMS with a molar ratio of 1:1. This study provides an effective strategy for the design and fabrication of PDMS with high mechanical strength, high gas barrier properties, and exceptional self-healing efficiency.

Facile Preparation of a Transparent, Self-Healing, and Recyclable Polysiloxane Elastomer Based on a Dynamic Imine and Boroxine Bond

Transparent polysiloxane elastomers with good self-healing and reprocessing abilities have attracted significant attention in the field of artificial skin and flexible displays. Herein, we propose a simple one-pot method to fabricate a room temperature self-healable polysiloxane elastomer (HPDMS) by introducing dynamic and reversible imine bonds and boroxine into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks. The presence of imine bonds and boroxine is proved by FT-IR and NMR spectra. The obtained HPDMS elastomer is highly transparent with a transmittance of up to 80%. The TGA results demonstrated that the HPDMS elastomer has good heat resistance and can be used in a wide temperature range. A lower glass transition temperature (Tg, -127.4 °C) was obtained and revealed that the elastomer is highly flexible at room temperature. Because of the reformation of dynamic reversible imine bonds and boroxine, the HPDMS elastomers exhibited excellent autonomous self-healing properties. After healing for 3 h, the self-healing efficiency of HPDMS reached 96.3% at room temperature. Moreover, the elastomers can be repeatedly reprocessed multiple times under milder conditions. This work provides a simple but effective method to prepare transparent self-healable and reprocessable polysiloxane elastomers.

Screening of volatiles from explosive initiators and plastic-bonded explosives (PBX) using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS)

The detection of explosives and explosive devices based on the volatile compounds they emit is a long-standing tool for law enforcement and physical security. Toward that end, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has become a crucial analytical tool for the identification of volatiles emitted by explosives. Previous SPME studies have identified many volatile compounds emitted by common explosive formulations that serve as the main charge in explosive devices. However, limited research has been conducted on initiators like fuses, detonating cords, and boosters. In this study, a variety of SPME fiber coatings (i.e., polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB), divinylbenzene/carboxin/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS), and carboxin/polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS)) were employed for the extraction and analysis of volatiles from Composition C-4 (cyclohexanone, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, and 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMNB)) and Red Dot double-base smokeless powder (nitroglycerine, phenylamine). The results revealed that a PDMS/DVB fiber was optimal. Then, an assortment of explosive items (i.e., detonation cord, safety fuse, slip-on booster, and shape charge) were analyzed with a PDMS/DVB fiber. A variety of volatile compounds were identified, including plasticizers (tributyl acetyl citrate, N-butylbenzenesulfonamide), taggants (DMNB), and degradation products (2-ethyl-1-hexanol).

Modeling Nonlinear Dynamics of Functionalization Layers: Enhancing Gas Sensor Sensitivity for Piezoelectrically Driven Microcantilever

This article presents a parametrized response model that enhances the limit of detection (LOD) of piezoelectrically driven microcantilever (PD-MC) based gas sensors by accounting for the adsorption-induced variations in elastic properties of the functionalization layer (binder) and the nonlinear motional dynamics of the PD-MC. The developed model is demonstrated for quantifying cadaverine, a volatile biogenic diamine whose concentration is used to assess the freshness of meat. At low concentrations of cadaverine, an increase in the resonance frequency is observed, contrary to the expected reduction due to mass added by adsorption. The study explores the variations in the elastic modulus vis-à-vis the adsorbed mass of cadaverine and derives the resonance frequency to the adsorbed mass response function. We advance a blended technique involving the analysis of atomic force microscopy (AFM) force-distance (f-d) curves and fitting of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) impedance response spectrum to deduce the adsorption-induced changes in the viscoelastic properties of the functionalization layer. The findings obtained are subsequently employed in modeling the response function for a structurally nonhomogenous PD-MC, highlighting the significance of the functionalization layer to the global elastic properties. The structural composition of the PD-MC beam adopted herein features a trapezoidal base hosting the actuating piezoelectric stratum and a rectangular free end with a functionalization layer. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory coupled with Hamilton's principle is used to develop the equation of motion, which is subsequently discretized into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations via Galerkin expansion, and the solutions to the first fundamental mode of vibration are determined using the method of multiple scales. The obtained solutions provide a basis for deducing the nonlinear response function model to the adsorbed mass. The derived model is validated by recorded resonance frequency changes resulting from exposure to known concentrations of cadaverine. We demonstrate that the increase in resonance frequency for low concentrations of cadaverine is due to the dominance of the variation of the elastic modulus of the functionalization layer originating from the initial binder-analyte interactions over damping due to added mass. It is concluded that the developed nonlinear response function model can reliably be used to quantify the cadaverine concentration at low concentrations with an elevated Limit of Detection.

Spin-Coating Fabrication Method of PDMS/NdFeB Composites Using Chitosan/PCL Coating

This paper verified the possibility of applying chitosan and/or ferulic acid or polycaprolactone (PCL)-based coatings to polydimethylsiloxane/neodymium-iron-boron (PDMS/NdFeB) composites using the spin-coating method. The surface modification of magnetic composites by biofunctional layers allows for the preparation of materials for biomedical applications. Biofunctional layered magnetic composites were obtained in three steps. The spin-coating method with various parameters (time and spin speed) was used to apply different substances to the surface of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to analyze the thickness and surface topography. The contact angle of the obtained surfaces was tested. Increasing spin speed and increasing process time for the same speed resulted in decreasing the composite's thickness. The linear and surface roughness for the prepared coatings were approximately 0.2 μm and 0.01 μm, respectively, which are desirable values in the context of biocompatibility. The contact angle test results showed that both the addition of chitosan and PCL to PDMS have reduced the contact angle θ from 105° for non-coated composite to θ~59-88° depending on the coating. The performed modifications gave promising results mainly due to making the surface hydrophilic, which is a desirable feature of projected biomaterials.

Degradable biomedical elastomers: paving the future of tissue repair and regenerative medicine

Degradable biomedical elastomers (DBE), characterized by controlled biodegradability, excellent biocompatibility, tailored elasticity, and favorable network design and processability, have become indispensable in tissue repair. This review critically examines the recent advances of biodegradable elastomers for tissue repair, focusing mainly on degradation mechanisms and evaluation, synthesis and crosslinking methods, microstructure design, processing techniques, and tissue repair applications. The review explores the material composition and cross-linking methods of elastomers used in tissue repair, addressing chemistry-related challenges and structural design considerations. In addition, this review focuses on the processing methods of two- and three-dimensional structures of elastomers, and systematically discusses the contribution of processing methods such as solvent casting, electrostatic spinning, and three-/four-dimensional printing of DBE. Furthermore, we describe recent advances in tissue repair using DBE, and include advances achieved in regenerating different tissues, including nerves, tendons, muscle, cardiac, and bone, highlighting their efficacy and versatility. The review concludes by discussing the current challenges in material selection, biodegradation, bioactivation, and manufacturing in tissue repair, and suggests future research directions. This concise yet comprehensive analysis aims to provide valuable insights and technical guidance for advances in DBE for tissue engineering.

Catalase Detection via Membrane-Based Pressure Sensors

Membrane-based sensors (MePSs) exhibit remarkable precision and sensitivity in detecting pressure changes. MePSs are commonly used to monitor catalytic reactions in solution, generating gas products crucial for signal amplification in bioassays. They also allow for catalyst quantification by indirectly measuring the pressure generated by the gaseous products. This is particularly interesting for detecting enzymes in biofluids associated with disease onset. To enhance the performance of a MePS, various structural factors influence membrane flexibility and response time, ultimately dictating the device's pressure sensitivity. In this study, we fabricated MePSs using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and investigated how structural modifications affect the Young's modulus (E) and residual stress (σ0) of the membranes. These modifications have a direct impact on the sensors' sensitivity to pressure variations, observed as a function of the volume of the chamber (Σ) or of the mechanical properties of the membrane itself (S). MePSs exhibiting the highest sensitivities were then employed to detect catalyst quantities inducing the dismutation of hydrogen peroxide, producing dioxygen as a gaseous product. As a result, a catalase enzyme was successfully detected using these optimized MePSs, achieving a remarkable sensitivity of (22.7 ± 1.2) µm/nM and a limit of detection (LoD) of 396 pM.

Resveratrol-Loaded Polydimethylsiloxane-Silica Hybrid Materials: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antitumoral Activity

In this work, hybrid materials within the polydimethylsiloxane-silica (PDMS-SiO2) system, synthesized via the sol-gel method, were developed and characterized for their potential to incorporate and release the bioactive compound resveratrol (RES). RES was incorporated into the materials with a high loading efficiency (>75%) using the rotary evaporator technique. This incorporation induced the amorphization of RES, resulting in enhanced solubility and in vitro release when compared to the free polyphenolic compound. The release profiles displayed pH dependence, exhibiting notably faster release at pH 5.2 compared to pH 7.4. The gradual release of RES over time demonstrated an initial time lag of approximately 4 h, being well described by the Weibull model. In vitro cytotoxicity studies were conducted on human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63), revealing a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability for RES-loaded samples (for concentrations >50 µg mL-1).

Molecular Origins of Shock Dissipation in Polymer-Based Nanocomposites

To explain the molecular origin of shock dissipation in polymer-based composites, a new method is proposed by absolutely quantifying the relative position between molecular chains, which directly reflects the shock dissipation energy between molecular chains and at the interfaces with nanofillers during mechanical deformation. The effects of nanofiller content and system temperature on energy dissipation were examined based on this newly proposed method, and the differences in energy dissipation between the thermosetting polymer (polydimethylsiloxane) and thermoplastic polymer (polyether-ether-ketone) under identical physical conditions were both studied to validate the reliability of the quantification method proposed in this paper. The present study offers a tool that provides theoretical insights to understand the molecular origins of shock dissipation in polymer composites as well as to facilitate the optimal design of composites with outstanding damping characteristics.

Ultrasonic irrigation flows in root canals: effects of ultrasound power and file insertion depth

Ultrasonic irrigation during root canal treatment can enhance biofilm disruption. The challenge is to improve the fluid flow so that the irrigant reaches areas inaccessible to hand instrumentation. The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate how the flow field and hydrodynamic forces induced by ultrasonic irrigation are influenced by the ultrasound power and file insertion depth. A root canal phantom was 3D printed and used as a mold for the fabrication of a PDMS channel. An ultrasonic instrument with a #15K-file provided the irrigation. The flow field was studied by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The time averaged velocity and shear stress distributions were found to vary significantly with ultrasound power. Their maximum values increase sharply for low powers and up to a critical power level. At and above this setting, the flow pattern changes, from the high velocity and shear stress region confined in the vicinity of the tip, to one covering the whole root canal domain. Exceeding this threshold also induces a moderate increase in the maximum velocities and shear stresses. The insertion depth was found to have a smaller effect on the measured velocity and shear stresses. Due to the oscillating nature of the flow, instantaneous maximum velocities and shear stresses can reach much higher values than the mean, especially for high powers. Ultrasonic irrigation will benefit from using a higher power setting as this does produce greater shear stresses near the walls of the root canal leading to the potential for increased biofilm removal.

Plasma-Activated Polydimethylsiloxane Microstructured Pattern with Collagen for Improved Myoblast Cell Guidance

We focused on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a substrate for replication, micropatterning, and construction of biologically active surfaces. The novelty of this study is based on the combination of the argon plasma exposure of a micropatterned PDMS scaffold, where the plasma served as a strong tool for subsequent grafting of collagen coatings and their application as cell growth scaffolds, where the standard was significantly exceeded. As part of the scaffold design, templates with a patterned microstructure of different dimensions (50 × 50, 50 × 20, and 30 × 30 μm2) were created by photolithography followed by pattern replication on a PDMS polymer substrate. Subsequently, the prepared microstructured PDMS replicas were coated with a type I collagen layer. The sample preparation was followed by the characterization of material surface properties using various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To evaluate the biocompatibility of the produced samples, we conducted studies on the interactions between selected polymer replicas and micro- and nanostructures and mammalian cells. Specifically, we utilized mouse myoblasts (C2C12), and our results demonstrate that we achieved excellent cell alignment in conjunction with the development of a cytocompatible surface. Consequently, the outcomes of this research contribute to an enhanced comprehension of surface properties and interactions between structured polymers and mammalian cells. The use of periodic microstructures has the potential to advance the creation of novel materials and scaffolds in tissue engineering. These materials exhibit exceptional biocompatibility and possess the capacity to promote cell adhesion and growth.

Batch Fabrication of Microelectrode Arrays with Glassy Carbon Microelectrodes and Interconnections for Neurochemical Sensing: Promises and Challenges

Flexible multielectrode arrays with glassy carbon (GC) electrodes and metal interconnection (hybrid MEAs) have shown promising performance in multi-channel neurochemical sensing. A primary challenge faced by hybrid MEAs fabrication is the adhesion of the metal traces with the GC electrodes, as prolonged electrical and mechanical stimulation can lead to adhesion failure. Previous devices with GC electrodes and interconnects made of a homogeneous material (all GC) demonstrated exceptional electrochemical stability but required miniaturization for enhanced tissue integration and chronic electrochemical sensing. In this study, we used two different methods for the fabrication of all GC-MEAs on thin flexible substrates with miniaturized features. The first method, like that previously reported, involves a double pattern-transfer photolithographic process, including transfer-bonding on temporary polymeric support. The second method requires a double-etching process, which uses a 2 µm-thick low stress silicon nitride coating of the Si wafer as the bottom insulator layer for the MEAs, bypassing the pattern-transfer and demonstrating a novel technique with potential advantages. We confirmed the feasibility of the two fabrication processes by verifying the practical conductivity of 3 µm-wide 2 µm-thick GC traces, the GC microelectrode functionality, and their sensing capability for the detection of serotonin using fast scan cyclic voltammetry. Through the exchange and discussion of insights regarding the strengths and limitations of these microfabrication methods, our goal is to propel the advancement of GC-based MEAs for the next generation of neural interface devices.

Energy renormalization for temperature transferable coarse-graining of silicone polymer

The bottom-up prediction of thermodynamic and mechanical behaviors of polymeric materials based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is of critical importance in polymer physics. Although the atomistically informed coarse-grained (CG) model can access greater spatiotemporal scales and retain essential chemical specificity, the temperature-transferable CG model is still a big challenge and hinders widespread application of this technique. Herein, we use a silicone polymer, i.e., polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), having an incredibly low chain rigidity as a model system, combined with an energy-renormalization (ER) approach, to systematically develop a temperature-transferable CG model. Specifically, by introducing temperature-dependent ER factors to renormalize the effective distance and cohesive energy parameters, the developed CG model faithfully preserved the dynamics, mechanical and conformational behaviors compared with the target all-atomistic (AA) model from glassy to melt regimes, which was further validated by experimental data. With the developed CG model featuring tremendously improved computational efficiency, we systematically explored the influences of cohesive interaction strength and temperature on the dynamical heterogeneity and mechanical response of polymers, where we observed consistent trends with other linear polymers with varying chain rigidity and monomeric structures. This study serves as an extension of our proposed ER approach of developing temperature transferable CG models with diverse segmental structures, highlighting the critical role of cohesive interaction strength on CG modeling of polymer dynamics and thermomechanical behaviors.

Analysis of Aging Characteristics of Umbrella Skirts of Composite Insulators Operating under the Influence of a Wind and Sand Environment in South Xinjiang

To study the influence of multi-factors, such as long sunshine, sand erosion, and so on, in southern Xinjiang, we selected two kinds of composite insulators for the transmission lines in southern Xinjiang to study the aging characteristics of the umbrella skirt surface. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the surface roughness of the umbrella skirt is high and there are a large number of micron inorganic particles. The skirt has the characteristics of low C/O element ratio and high Al element content. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and micro infrared test show that the aging depth of the Myli Line skirt after 19 years of operation is 160~190 µm and that of Yuhe Line 1 after 14 years of operation is greater than 180 µm. The plasma discharge method was used to simulate the corona discharge in the actual operation to accelerate the aging of the surface of the umbrella skirt and the hydrophobic recovery of the umbrella skirt was investigated. The results show that the temperature has a great influence on the surface hydrophobic recovery performance after plasma treatment. These results may provide some theoretical guidance and technical support for the selection, operation, and maintenance of composite insulators in Xinjiang.

Recent Advances and Challenges in Polymer-Based Materials for Space Radiation Shielding

Space exploration requires the use of suitable materials to protect astronauts and structures from the hazardous effects of radiation, in particular, ionizing radiation, which is ubiquitous in the hostile space environment. In this scenario, polymer-based materials and composites play a crucial role in achieving effective radiation shielding while providing low-weight and tailored mechanical properties to spacecraft components. This work provides an overview of the latest developments and challenges in polymer-based materials designed for radiation-shielding applications in space. Recent advances in terms of both experimental and numerical studies are discussed. Different approaches to enhancing the radiation-shielding performance are reported, such as integrating various types of nanofillers within polymer matrices and optimizing the materials design. Furthermore, this review explores the challenges in developing multifunctional materials that are able to provide radiation protection. By summarizing the state-of-the-art research and identifying emerging trends, this review aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to identify polymer materials and composites that are most useful to protect human health and spacecraft performance in the harsh radiation conditions that are typically found during missions in space.

Reduced Sliding Friction of Lubricant-Impregnated Catheters

During urethral catheterization, sliding friction can cause discomfort and even hemorrhaging. In this report, we use a lubricant-impregnated polydimethylsiloxane coating to reduce the sliding friction of a catheter. Using a pig urethra attached to a microforce testing system, we found that a lubricant-impregnated catheter reduces the sliding friction during insertion by more than a factor of two. This suggests that slippery, lubricant-impregnated surfaces have the potential to enhance patient comfort and safety during catheterization.

An in vitro demonstration of a passive, acoustic metamaterial as a temperature sensor with mK resolution for implantable applications

Wireless medical sensors typically utilize electromagnetic coupling or ultrasound for energy transfer and sensor interrogation. Energy transfer and management is a complex aspect that often limits the applicability of implantable sensor systems. In this work, we report a new passive temperature sensing scheme based on an acoustic metamaterial made of silicon embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane matrix. Compared to other approaches, this concept is implemented without additional electrical components in situ or the need for a customized receiving unit. A standard ultrasonic transducer is used for this demonstration to directly excite and collect the reflected signal. The metamaterial resonates at a frequency close to a typical medical value (5 MHz) and exhibits a high-quality factor. Combining the design features of the metamaterial with the high-temperature sensitivity of the polydimethylsiloxane matrix, we achieve a temperature resolution of 30 mK. This value is below the current standard resolution required in infrared thermometry for monitoring postoperative complications (0.1 K). We fabricated, simulated, in vitro tested, and compared three acoustic sensor designs in the 29-43 °C (~302-316 K) temperature range. With this concept, we demonstrate how our passive metamaterial sensor can open the way toward new zero-power smart medical implant concepts based on acoustic interrogation.

Synthesis of Vinyl-Containing Polydimethylsiloxane in An Active Medium

This research deals with the synthesis of copoly(methylvinyl)(dimethyl)siloxanes by the copolycondensation of dimethyldiethoxy- and methylvinyldimethoxysilane in an active medium, followed by thermal condensation in a vacuum. We achieved a range of copolymers exhibiting finely tuned molecular weights spanning between 1500 and 20,000 with regulated functional methylvinylsiloxane units. Analysis of the microstructure showed that the copolymerization predominantly formed products demonstrating a random distribution of units (R~1). However, an increase in the content of vinyl-containing monomers increases the R parameter, indicating an enhanced tendency towards alternating linkages within the copolymer matrix.

Integrating Benzoxazine-PDMS 3D Networks with Carbon Nanotubes for flexible Pressure Sensors

Shapeable and flexible pressure sensors with superior mechanical and electrical properties are of major interest as they can be employed in a wide range of applications. In this regard, elastomer-based composites incorporating carbon nanomaterials in the insulating matrix embody an appealing solution for designing flexible pressure sensors with specific properties. In this study, PDMS chains of different molecular weight were successfully functionalized with benzoxazine moieties in order to thermally cure them without adding a second component, nor a catalyst or an initiator. These precursors were then blended with 1 weight percent of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using an ultrasound probe, which induced a transition from a liquid-like to a gel-like behavior as CNTs generate an interconnected network within the matrix. After curing, the resulting nanocomposites exhibit mechanical and electrical properties making them highly promising materials for pressure-sensing applications.

Engineering dense tumor constructs via cellular contraction of extracellular matrix hydrogels

Physical characteristics of solid tumors such as dense internal microarchitectures and pathological stiffness influence cancer progression and treatment. While it is routine to engineer culture substrates and scaffolds with elastic moduli that approximate tumors, these models often fail to capture characteristic internal microarchitectures such as densely compacted concentric ECM fibers at the stromal interface. Contractile mesenchymal cells can solve this engineering challenge by deforming, contracting, and compacting extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogels to decrease tissue volume and increase tissue density. Here we demonstrate that allowing human fibroblasts of varying origins to freely contract collagen type I-containing hydrogels co-seeded with carcinoma cell spheroids produces a tissue engineered construct with structural features that mimic dense solid tumors in vivo. Morphometry and mechanical testing were conducted in tandem with biochemical analysis of proliferation and viability to confirm that dense carcinoma constructs engineered using this approach capture relevant physical characteristics of solid carcinomas in a tractable format that preserves viability and is amenable to extended culture. The reported method is adaptable to the use of multiple mesenchymal cell types and the inclusion of fibrin in the ECM combined with seeding of endothelial cells to produce prevascularized constructs. The physical dense carcinoma constructs engineered using this approach may provide more clinically relevant venues for studying cancer pathophysiology and the challenges associated with the delivery of macromolecular drugs and cellular immunotherapies to solid tumors.

Covalent bonding of quaternary ammonium compounds and zwitterionic polymer functional layers on polydimethylsiloxane against Escherichia Coli adhesion

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are recognized by the World Health Organization as a useful disinfectant against microbes. The synergistic effect of zwitterionic polymers with QACs as antimicrobial agents rather than QACs alone is yet to be investigated. A potential strategy is the use of covalent bonding to halt the release of minute antibacterials and a hierarchy of functional layers to detain and annihilate microbes. The strategy was tested on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface on which quaternized poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (qDMA+) and sulfobetaine (SBMA) were hierarchically functionalized. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed the quaternization of DMA to qDMA+, grafting of qDMA + on PDMS (PDMS-qDMA+), and grafting of the SBMA overlayer on PDMS-qDMA+ (PDMS-qDMA+-SB). Contact angle measurement showed that PDMS-qDMA + exhibited the lowest contact angle (26.2 ± 2.9°) compared with the hydrophobic PDMS (115.2 ± 1.6°), but that of PDMSqDMA+-SB increased to 56.3 ± 1.3°. The Escherichia coli survival count revealed that PDMS-qDMA+ and PDMS-qDMA+-SB exhibited significantly greater bactericidal ability than PDMS. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed fewer dead bacteria on PDMS-qDMA+-SB than on PDMS-qDMA+. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that E. coli was disintegrated on the functionalized surface via dual-end cell lysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of this type of process. The results confirmed the potent antibacterial and cell disruption activities of the qDMA+ and SBMA modified PDMS surface.

Functional PDMS Elastomers: Bulk Composites, Surface Engineering, and Precision Fabrication

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-the simplest and most common silicone compound-exemplifies the central characteristics of its class and has attracted tremendous research attention. The development of PDMS-based materials is a vivid reflection of the modern industry. In recent years, PDMS has stood out as the material of choice for various emerging technologies. The rapid improvement in bulk modification strategies and multifunctional surfaces has enabled a whole new generation of PDMS-based materials and devices, facilitating, and even transforming enormous applications, including flexible electronics, superwetting surfaces, soft actuators, wearable and implantable sensors, biomedicals, and autonomous robotics. This paper reviews the latest advances in the field of PDMS-based functional materials, with a focus on the added functionality and their use as programmable materials for smart devices. Recent breakthroughs regarding instant crosslinking and additive manufacturing are featured, and exciting opportunities for future research are highlighted. This review provides a quick entrance to this rapidly evolving field and will help guide the rational design of next-generation soft materials and devices.

Stress Concentration on PDMS: An evaluation of three numerical constitutive models using digital image correlation

The examination of hyperelastic materials' behavior, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is crucial for applications in areas as biomedicine and electronics. However, the limitations of hyperelastic models for specific stress scenarios, with stress concentration, are not well explored on the literature. To address this, firstly, three constitutive models were evaluated (Neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, and Ogden) using numerical simulations and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) analysis during a uniaxial tensile test. The samples were made of PDMS with stress concentration geometries (center holes, shoulder fillets, and edge notches). Results of ANOVA analysis showed that any of the three models can be chosen for numerical analysis of PDMS since no significant differences in suitability were found. Finally, the Ogen model was chosen to obtain the stress concentration factors for these geometries, a property which characterize how discontinuities change the maximum stress supported by an element. Our study provides new values for variables needed to analyze and design hyperelastic elements and produce a foundation for understanding PDMS stress-strain behavior.

Optimizing Sensitivity in a Fluid-Structure Interaction-Based Microfluidic Viscometer: A Multiphysics Simulation Study

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI) are used in a variety of sensors based on micro- and nanotechnology to detect and measure changes in pressure, flow, and viscosity of fluids. These sensors typically consist of a flexible structure that deforms in response to the fluid flow and generates an electrical, optical, or mechanical signal that can be measured. FSI-based sensors have recently been utilized in applications such as biomedical devices, environmental monitoring, and aerospace engineering, where the accurate measurement of fluid properties is critical to ensure performance and safety. In this work, multiphysics models are employed to identify and study parameters that affect the performance of an FSI-based microfluidic viscometer that measures the viscosity of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids using the deflection of flexible micropillars. Specifically, we studied the impact of geometric parameters such as pillar diameter and height, aspect ratio of the pillars, pillar spacing, and the distance between the pillars and the channel walls. Our study provides design guidelines to adjust the sensitivity of the viscometer toward specific applications. Overall, this highly sensitive microfluidic sensor can be integrated into complex systems and provide real-time monitoring of fluid viscosity.

Synthesis and photochemical modification of monolayer thin MOF flakes for incorporation in defect free polymer composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with benzophenone linker molecules are characterized by their ability to undergo photochemical postsynthetic modification. While this approach opens up almost unlimited possibilities for tailoring materials to specific applications, the processability of the large particles is still lacking. In this work, we present a new approach to fabricate micro flakes of the stable Zr-bzpdc-MOF (bzpdc = benzophenone-4-4'-dicarboxylate) with a thickness of only a few monolayers. The crystalline and nanoporous flakes form dispersions in acetone that are stable for months. Embedding the flakes in polymer composites was investigated as one of many possible applications. Zr-bzpdc-MOF micro flakes were decorated with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) via a photochemical postsynthetic modification and incorporated into silicon elastomers. The PDMS functionalization allows covalent cross-linking between the MOF and the polymer while maintaining the porosity of the MOF. The resulting hybrid materials provide defect-free interfaces and show preferential adsorption of CO2 over CH4, making them attractive for gas separation or sensing applications. The work should serve as a basis for bringing bzpdc-MOFs into real-world applications - in polymeric membranes, but also beyond.

Sensing in Soft Robotics

Soft robotics is an exciting field of science and technology that enables robots to manipulate objects with human-like dexterity. Soft robots can handle delicate objects with care, access remote areas, and offer realistic feedback on their handling performance. However, increased dexterity and mechanical compliance of soft robots come with the need for accurate control of the position and shape of these robots. Therefore, soft robots must be equipped with sensors for better perception of their surroundings, location, force, temperature, shape, and other stimuli for effective usage. This review highlights recent progress in sensing feedback technologies for soft robotic applications. It begins with an introduction to actuation technologies and material selection in soft robotics, followed by an in-depth exploration of various types of sensors, their integration methods, and the benefits of multimodal sensing, signal processing, and control strategies. A short description of current market leaders in soft robotics is also included in the review to illustrate the growing demands of this technology. By examining the latest advancements in sensing feedback technologies for soft robots, this review aims to highlight the potential of soft robotics and inspire innovation in the field.

Pervaporation and Gas Separation Properties of High-Molecular Ladder-like Polyphenylsilsesquioxanes

This paper presents the results of studies on the pervaporation properties (for benzene/hexane mixtures) and gas permeability (for He, H2, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, and C4H10) of ladder-like polyphenylsesquioxanes (L-PPSQ) with improved physical and chemical properties. These polymers were obtained by condensation of cis-tetraphenylcyclotetrasiloxanetetraol in ammonia medium. The structure of L-PPSQ was fully confirmed by a combination of physicochemical analysis methods: 1H, 29Si NMR, IR spectroscopy, HPLC, powder XRD, and viscometry in solution. For the first time, a high molecular weight of the polymer (Mn = 238 kDa, Mw = 540 kDa) was achieved, which determines its improved mechanical properties and high potential for use in membrane separation. Using TGA and mechanical analysis methods, it was found that this polymer has high thermal (Td5% = 537 °C) and thermal-oxidative stability (Td5% = 587 °C) and good mechanical properties (Young's module (E) = 1700 MPa, ultimate tensile stress (σ) = 44 MPa, elongation at break (ε) = 6%), which is important for making membranes workable under various conditions. The polymer showed a high separation factor for a mixture of 10% wt. benzene in n-hexane (126) at a benzene flow of 33 g/(m2h).

Point-of-care diagnostics for sepsis using clinical biomarkers and microfluidic technology

Sepsis is a life-threatening immune response which is caused by a wide variety of sources and is a leading cause of mortality globally. Rapid diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment are critical for successful patient outcomes; however, current molecular diagnostic techniques are time-consuming, costly and require trained personnel. Additionally, there is a lack of rapid point-of-care (POC) devices available for sepsis detection despite the urgent requirements in emergency departments and low-resource areas. Recent advances have been made toward developing a POC test for early sepsis detection that will be more rapid and accurate compared to conventional techniques. Within this context, this review discusses the use of current and novel biomarkers for early sepsis diagnosis using microfluidics devices for POC testing.

A Flexible and Highly Sensitive Pressure Sense Electrode Based on Cotton Pulp for Wearable Electronics

Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity have great potential applications in wearable electronics. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare sense electrodes with high flexibility, high sensitivity, and high electrochemical performance. Here, we propose a novel and simple method for carbonizing cotton fibers as excellent electrically conductive materials. Moreover, carbonized cotton fiber (CCF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were assembled into a flexible sense electrode. The CCF/PDMS electrode shows a high sensitivity of 10.8 kPa^-1, a wide response frequency from 0.2-2.0 Hz, and durability over 900 cycles. The combined CCF/PDMS sensors can monitor human movement and pulse vibration, showing the enormous potential for use in wearable device technology. Additionally, the CCF/PDMS can be used as electrodes with a specific capacitance of 332.5 mF cm^-2 at a current density of 5 mA cm^-2, thanks to their high electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity, demonstrating the promising prospect of flexible supercapacitors.

Progress in Microtopography Optimization of Polymers-Based Pressure/Strain Sensors

Due to the wide application of wearable electronic devices in daily life, research into flexible electronics has become very attractive. Recently, various polymer-based sensors have emerged with great sensing performance and excellent extensibility. It is well known that different structural designs each confer their own unique, great impacts on the properties of materials. For polymer-based pressure/strain sensors, different structural designs determine different response-sensing mechanisms, thus showing their unique advantages and characteristics. This paper mainly focuses on polymer-based pressure-sensing materials applied in different microstructures and reviews their respective advantages. At the same time, polymer-based pressure sensors with different microstructures, including with respect to their working mechanisms, key parameters, and relevant operating ranges, are discussed in detail. According to the summary of its performance and mechanisms, different morphologies of microstructures can be designed for a sensor according to its performance characteristics and application scenario requirements, and the optimal structure can be adjusted by weighing and comparing sensor performances for the future. Finally, a conclusion and future perspectives are described.

Synthesis of cellulose nanofiber/polysiloxane-polyurea composite materials with self-healing and reprocessing properties

Inspired by the self-recoverability ability of organisms, various self-healing materials have been developed. However, most reinforced fillers are faced with the problem that mechanical strength and self-healing efficiency of materials cannot be improved simultaneously. Here we first prepared new polysiloxane-polyurea (PDMS-PU) and used it as matrix resin to prepare cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/PDMS-PU composite materials with high mechanical properties. CNFs increased the tensile strength of PDMS-PU by 38.87 % and CNF/PDMS-PU composite materials maintained the great bending resistance, transparency and reprocessing properties of PDMS-PU. Moreover, the introduction of CNFs did not reduce the self-healing efficiency of PDMS-PU, and PDMS-PU containing disulfide bonds with CNF content of 1 % (CNF/PDMS-IPDI-S-1 %) with healing efficiency of 95.58 %, and the tensile strength after three recycling processing was still as high as 92.55 % of the original. CNFs reinforced PDMS-PU composite materials are expected to replace PDMS materials in advanced engineering fields that require high strength durability and good formability.

Highly efficient thin-film 930 nm VCSEL on PDMS for biomedical applications

Recently, biocompatible optical sources have been surfacing for new-rising biomedical applications, allowing them to be used for multi-purpose technologies such as biological sensing, optogenetic modulation, and phototherapy. Especially, vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is in the spotlight as a prospective candidate for optical sources owing to its low-driving current performance, low-cost, and package easiness in accordance with two-dimensional (2D) arrays structure. In this study, we successfully demonstrated the actualization of biocompatible thin-film 930 nm VCSELs transferred onto a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) carrier. The PDMS feature with biocompatibility as well as biostability makes the thin-film VCSELs well-suited for biomedical applications. In order to integrate the conventional VCSEL onto the PDMS carrier, we utilized a double-transfer technique that transferred the thin-film VCSELs onto foreign substrates twice, enabling it to maintain the p-on-n polarity of the conventional VCSEL. Additionally, we employed a surface modification-assisted bonding (SMB) using an oxygen plasma in conjunction with silane treatment when bonding the PDMS carrier with the substrate-removed conventional VCSELs. The threshold current and maximum output power of the fabricated 930 nm thin-film VCSELs are 1.08 mA and 7.52 mW at an injection current of 13.9 mA, respectively.

Studying the Physical and Chemical Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane Matrix Reinforced by Nanostructured TiO2 Supported on Mesoporous Silica

In this study, a reactive adsorbent filler was integrated into a polymeric matrix as a novel reactive protective barrier without undermining its mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. For this purpose, newly synthesized TiO₂/MCM/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites were prepared, and their various properties were thoroughly studied. The filler, TiO₂/MCM, is based on a (45 wt%) TiO₂ nanoparticle catalyst inside the pores of ordered mesoporous silica, MCM-41, which combines a high adsorption capacity and catalytic capability. This study shows that the incorporation of TiO₂/MCM significantly enhances the composite's Young's modulus in terms of tensile strength, as an optimal measurement of 1.6 MPa was obtained, compared with that of 0.8 MPa of pristine PDMS. The composites also showed a higher thermal stability, a reduction in the coefficient of thermal expansion (from 290 to 110 ppm/°C), a 25% reduction in the change in the normalized specific heat capacity, and an increase in the thermal degradation temperatures. The chemical stability in organic environments was improved, as toluene swelling decreased by 40% and the contact angle increased by ~15°. The enhanced properties of the novel synthesized TiO₂/MCM/PDMS composite can be used in various applications where a high adsorption capacity and catalytic/photocatalytic activity are required, such as in protective equipment, microfluidic applications, and chemical sensor devices.

Laser-induced heating of polydimethylsiloxane-magnetite nanocomposites for hyperthermic inhibition of triple-negative breast cancer cell proliferation

This paper presents the results of an experimental and computational study of the effects of laser-induced heating provided by magnetite nanocomposite structures that are being developed for the localized hyperthermic treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. Magnetite nanoparticle-reinforced polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposites were fabricated with weight percentages of 1%, 5%, and 10% magnetite nanoparticles. The nanocomposites were exposed to incident Near Infrared (NIR) laser beams with well-controlled powers. The laser-induced heating is explored in: (i) heating liquid media (deionized water and cell growth media [Leibovitz L15+]) to characterize the photothermal properties of the nanocomposites, (ii) in vitro experiments that explore the effects of localized heating on triple-negative breast cancer cells, and (iii) experiments in which the laser beams penetrate through chicken tissue to heat up nanocomposite samples embedded at different depths beneath the chicken skin. The resulting plasmonic laser-induced heating is explained using composite theories and heat transport models. The results show that the laser/nanocomposite interactions decrease the viability of triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) at temperatures in the hyperthermia domain between 41 and 44°C. Laser irradiation did not cause any observed physical damage to the chicken tissue. The potential in vivo performance of the PDMS nanocomposites was also investigated using computational finite element models of the effects of laser/magnetite nanocomposite interactions on the temperatures and thermal doses experienced by tissues that surround the nanocomposite devices. The implications of the results are then discussed for the development of implantable nanocomposite devices for localized treatment of triple-negative breast cancer tissue via hyperthermia.

In Vivo Penetrating Microelectrodes for Brain Electrophysiology

In recent decades, microelectrodes have been widely used in neuroscience to understand the mechanisms behind brain functions, as well as the relationship between neural activity and behavior, perception and cognition. However, the recording of neuronal activity over a long period of time is limited for various reasons. In this review, we briefly consider the types of penetrating chronic microelectrodes, as well as the conductive and insulating materials for microelectrode manufacturing. Additionally, we consider the effects of penetrating microelectrode implantation on brain tissue. In conclusion, we review recent advances in the field of in vivo microelectrodes.

Flexible Wearable Sensors in Medical Monitoring

The popularity of health concepts and the wave of digitalization have driven the innovation of sensors in the medical field. Such continual development has made sensors progress in the direction of safety, flexibility, and intelligence for continuous monitoring of vital signs, which holds considerable promise for changing the way humans live and even treat diseases. To this end, flexible wearable devices with high performance, such as high sensitivity, high stability, and excellent biodegradability, have attracted strong interest from scientists. Herein, a review of flexible wearable sensors for temperature, heart rate, human motion, respiratory rate, glucose, and pH is highlighted. In addition, engineering issues are also presented, focusing on material selection, sensor fabrication, and power supply. Finally, potential challenges facing current technology and future directions of wearable sensors are also discussed.

Research Progresses in Microstructure Designs of Flexible Pressure Sensors

Flexible electronic technology is one of the research hotspots, and numerous wearable devices have been widely used in our daily life. As an important part of wearable devices, flexible sensors can effectively detect various stimuli related to specific environments or biological species, having a very bright development prospect. Therefore, there has been lots of studies devoted to developing high-performance flexible pressure sensors. In addition to developing a variety of materials with excellent performances, the microstructure designs of materials can also effectively improve the performances of sensors, which has brought new ideas to scientists and attracted their attention increasingly. This paper will summarize the flexible pressure sensors based on material microstructure designs in recent years. The paper will mainly discuss the processing methods and characteristics of various sensors with different microstructures, and compare the advantages, disadvantages, and application scenarios of them. At the same time, the main application fields of flexible pressure sensors based on microstructure designs will be listed, and their future development and challenges will be discussed.

Effects of Hybrid Polymeric Material Based on Polycaprolactone on the Environment

Polymers are of great interest in areas such as agriculture, medicine and pharmacy, the food and cosmetic industries, and the chemical and construction industries. However, many polymers are nonbiodegradable and are not environmentally friendly. They are highly resistant to degradation and therefore can lead to waste disposal problems. In recent years, the interest in the microbial degradation of polymeric materials has grown due to the desire for less waste pollution in the environment. In this study, the biodegradable polymer that was obtained by the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) using an aminopropyl-polydimethylsiloxane (APDMS) oligomer and the effects of the polymer towards the growth and development of tomato plants (Lypercosium esculentum) were investigated. The obtained product was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDX) analysis, and the effects of this compound on the evolution of tomato plants (Lypercosium esculentum) were studied. We also studied the biological stability of the product by identifying some of the microorganisms that developed on the surface, given its susceptibility to biodegradation.

Lymphatic channel sheet of polydimethylsiloxane for preventing secondary lymphedema in the rat upper limb model

Secondary lymphedema is a severe complication of cancer treatment, but there is no effective curative method yet. Lymph node dissection and radiation therapy for cancer treatment may lead to secondary lymphedema, which is a chronic disease induced by malfunction of lymphatic flow. The lymphatic channel sheet (LCS) is an artificial micro-fluidic structure that was fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane to maintain lymphatic flow and induce lymphangiogenesis. The structure has two-dimensional multichannels that increase the probability of lymphangiogenesis and allow for relatively easy application. We verified the efficacy of the lymphatic channel sheet through macroscopic and microscopic observation in small animal models, which underwent brachial lymph node dissection and irradiation. The lymphatic channel sheet enabled the successful transport of lymphatic fluid from the distal to the proximal area in place of the removed brachial lymph nodes. It prevented swelling and abnormal lymphatic drainage during the follow-up period. Lymphangiogenesis was also identified inside the channel by histological analysis after 8 weeks. According to these experimental results, we attest to the roles of the lymphatic channel sheet as a lymphatic pathway and scaffold in the rat upper limb model of secondary lymphedema. The lymphatic channel sheet maintained lymphatic flow after lymph node dissection and irradiation in an environment where lymph flow is cut off. It also relieved symptoms of secondary lymphedema by providing a lymph-friendly space and inducing lymphangiogenesis.

Loading of Polydimethylsiloxane with a Human ApoB-Derived Antimicrobial Peptide to Prevent Bacterial Infections

Background: medical device-induced infections affect millions of lives worldwide and innovative preventive strategies are urgently required. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) appear as ideal candidates to efficiently functionalize medical devices surfaces and prevent bacterial infections. In this scenario, here, we produced antimicrobial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by loading this polymer with an antimicrobial peptide identified in human apolipoprotein B, r(P)ApoB_L^Pro. Methods: once obtained loaded PDMS, its structure, anti-infective properties, ability to release the peptide, stability, and biocompatibility were evaluated by FTIR spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements, broth microdilution method, time-killing kinetic assays, quartz crystal microbalance analyses, MTT assays, and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Results: PDMS was loaded with r(P)ApoB_L^Pro peptide which was found to be present not only in the bulk matrix of the polymer but also on its surface. ApoB-derived peptide was found to retain its antimicrobial properties once loaded into PDMS and the antimicrobial material was found to be stable upon storage at 4 °C for a prolonged time interval. A gradual and significant release (70% of the total amount) of the peptide from PDMS was also demonstrated upon 400 min incubation and the antimicrobial material was found to be endowed with anti-adhesive properties and with the ability to prevent biofilm attachment. Furthermore, PDMS loaded with r(P)ApoB_L^Pro peptide was found not to affect the viability of eukaryotic cells. Conclusions: an easy procedure to functionalize PDMS with r(P)ApoB_L^Pro peptide has been here developed and the obtained functionalized material has been found to be stable, antimicrobial, and biocompatible.

Fluid Flow and Structural Numerical Analysis of a Cerebral Aneurysm Model

Intracranial aneurysms (IA) are dilations of the cerebral arteries and, in most cases, have no symptoms. However, it is a very serious pathology, with a high mortality rate after rupture. Several studies have been focused only on the hemodynamics of the flow within the IA. However, besides the effect of the flow, the development and rupture of the IA are also associated with a combination of other factors such as the wall mechanical behavior. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze, in addition to the flow behavior, the biomechanical behavior of the aneurysm wall. For this, CFD simulations were performed for different Reynolds numbers (1, 100, 500 and 1000) and for two different rheological models (Newtonian and Carreau). Subsequently, the pressure values of the fluid simulations were exported to the structural simulations in order to qualitatively observe the deformations, strains, normal stresses and shear stress generated in the channel wall. For the structural simulations, a hyperelastic constitutive model (5-parameter Mooney–Rivlin) was used. The results show that with the increase in the Reynolds number (Re), the recirculation phenomenon is more pronounced, which is not seen for Re = 1. The higher the Re, the higher the strain, displacement, normal and shear stresses values.
