Abstract
Linus Pauling, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, suggested that a high dose of vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) might work as a prevention or treatment for the common cold. Vitamin C therapy was tested in clinical trials, but clear evidence was not found at that time. Although Pauling's proposal has been strongly criticized for a long time, vitamin C therapy has continued to be tested as a treatment for a variety of diseases, including coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19). The pathogen of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, belongs to the β-coronavirus lineage, which includes human coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). This review intends to shed new light on vitamin C antiviral activity that may prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection through the chemical production of nitric oxide (NO). NO is a gaseous free radical that is largely produced by the enzyme NO synthase (NOS) in cells. NO produced by upper epidermal cells contributes to the inactivation of viruses and bacteria contained in air or aerosols. In addition to enzymatic production, NO can be generated by the chemical reduction of inorganic nitrite (NO2-), an alternative mechanism for NO production in living organisms. Dietary vitamin C, largely contained in fruits and vegetables, can reduce the nitrite in saliva to produce NO in the oral cavity when chewing foods. In the stomach, salivary nitrite can also be reduced to NO by vitamin C secreted from the epidermal cells of the stomach. The strong acidic pH of gastric juice facilitates the chemical reduction of salivary nitrite to produce NO. Vitamin C contributes in multiple ways to the host innate immune system as a first-line defense mechanism against pathogens. Highlighting chemical NO production by vitamin C, we suggest that controversies on the therapeutic effects of vitamin C in previous clinical trials may partly be due to less appreciation of the pleiotropic functions of vitamin C as a universal bioreductant.

Abstract
Effects of vitamin C supplementation on the oral bioaccessibility of lead (Pb) present in contaminated soils were examined using a number of in vitro assays (PBET, SBRC, UBM and IVG). In the presence of vitamin C, an increase in Pb bioaccessibility was observed in the gastric phase by 1.3-fold (30.5%-85.5%) and in the intestinal phase by 3.1-fold (0.9%-58.9%). Lead mobilization was regulated by reductive dissolution of Fe(III) and sequestration of Pb on secondary Fe minerals. Sequential extraction by the Bureau Community of Reference (BCR) provided more evidence that reducible fraction and residual fraction were major contributor of gastric Pb bioaccessibility, as well as reduced fractions in intestinal Pb bioaccessibility. In addition, higher non-carcinogenic risks may occur based on target hazard quotient (THQ ≥ 1). For people exposed to Pb present in soil, the management of vitamin C supplements is of serious concern.

Abstract
Beneficial metabolic effects of inorganic nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been documented in animal experiments; however, this is not the case for humans. Although it has remained an open question, the redox environment affecting the conversion of NO3- to NO2- and then to NO is suggested as a potential reason for this lost-in-translation. Ascorbic acid (AA) has a critical role in the gastric conversion of NO2- to NO following ingestion of NO3-. In contrast to AA-synthesizing species like rats, the lack of ability to synthesize AA and a lower AA body pool and plasma concentrations may partly explain why humans with T2DM do not benefit from NO3-/NO2- supplementation. Rats also have higher AA concentrations in their stomach tissue and gastric juice that can significantly potentiate gastric NO2--to-NO conversion. Here, we hypothesized that the lack of beneficial metabolic effects of inorganic NO3- in patients with T2DM may be at least in part attributed to species differences in AA metabolism and also abnormal metabolism of AA in patients with T2DM. If this hypothesis is proved to be correct, then patients with T2DM may need supplementation of AA to attain the beneficial metabolic effects of inorganic NO3- therapy.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori is a class one carcinogen which causes chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and adenocarcinoma. The mechanisms by which H. pylori interacts with other risk and protective factors, particularly vitamin C in gastric carcinogenesis are complex. Gastric carcinogenesis includes metabolic, environmental, epigenetic, genomic, infective, inflammatory and oncogenic pathways. The molecular classification of gastric cancer subtypes has revolutionized the understanding of gastric carcinogenesis. This includes the tumour microenvironment, germline mutations, and the role of Helicobacter pylori bacteria, Epstein Barr virus and epigenetics in somatic mutations. There is evidence that ascorbic acid, phytochemicals and endogenous antioxidant systems can modify the risk of gastric cancer. Gastric juice ascorbate levels depend on dietary intake of ascorbic acid but can also be decreased by H. pylori infection, H. pylori CagA secretion, tobacco smoking, achlorhydria and chronic atrophic gastritis. Ascorbic acid may be protective against gastric cancer by its antioxidant effect in gastric cytoprotection, regenerating active vitamin E and glutathione, inhibiting endogenous N-nitrosation, reducing toxic effects of ingested nitrosodimethylamines and heterocyclic amines, and preventing H. pylori infection. The effectiveness of such cytoprotection is related to H. pylori strain virulence, particularly CagA expression. The role of vitamin C in epigenetic reprogramming in gastric cancer is still evolving. Other factors in conjunction with vitamin C also play a role in gastric carcinogenesis. Eradication of H. pylori may lead to recovery of vitamin C secretion by gastric epithelium and enable regression of premalignant gastric lesions, thereby interrupting the Correa cascade of gastric carcinogenesis.

Abstract
The soil matrix can sequester arsenic (As) and reduces its exposure by soil ingestion. In vivo dosing studies and in vitro gastrointestinal (IVG) methods have been used to predict relative bioavailable (RBA) As. Originally, the Ohio State University (OSU-IVG) method predicted RBA As for soils exclusively from mining and smelting sites with a median of 5,636 mg As kg-1. The objectives of the current study were to (i) evaluate the ability of the OSU-IVG method to predict RBA As for As contaminated soils with a wider range of As content and As contaminant sources, and (ii) evaluate a modified extraction procedure's ability to improve prediction of RBA As. In vitro bioaccessible (IVBA) by OSU-IVG and California Bioaccessibility Method (CAB) methods, RBA As, speciation, and properties of 33 As contaminated soils were determined. Total As ranged from 162 to 12,483 mg kg-1 with a median of 73 mg kg-1. RBA As ranged from 1.30 to 60.0% and OSU-IVG IVBA As ranged from 0.80 to 52.3%. Arsenic speciation was predominantly As(V) adsorbed to hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) or iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al) oxides. The OSU-IVG often extracted significantly less As in vitro than in vivo RBA As, in particularly for soils from historical gold mining. The CAB method, which is a modified OSU-IVG method extracted more As than OSU-IVG for most soils, resulting in a more accurate predictor than OSU-IVG, especially for low to moderately contaminated soils (<1,500 mg As kg-1) with RBA As = 0.81 IVBA As + 3.2, r2 = 0.91.

Abstract
Background Resistin, as an adipokine, has been shown to be increased in serum plasma of gastric cancer patients and suggested to be a major factor in gastric carcinogenesis. However, it is still not clear how Resistin influences gastric cancer progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate Resistin effect on cell proliferation and expression of telomerase gene in gastric cancer cell line (AGS). Methods In this study, the proliferating activity of AGS cells stimulated with Resistin was also evaluated by using 2,3-Bis-(2-Methoxy-4-Nitro-5-Sulfophenyl)-2H-Tetrazolium-5-Carboxanilide (XTT) assay and trypan blue staining method. To investigate telomerase gene expression affected by Resistin, total RNA was extracted, cDNA was synthesized and expression of hTERT mRNA was carried out by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results Exogenous Resistin has induced gastric cancer cells proliferation in a dose-dependent manner and could improve cell viability. Also the expression of Human Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (hTERT) was upregulated in 24 hours, after Resistin treatment. Conclusions This study has shown Resistin induces exogenously gastric cancer cell proliferation and increases hTERT gene expression. These findings may clarify the role of Resistin in gastric carcinogenesis. Therefore blocking Resistin signaling and limiting its secretion may be valuable for the treatment of gastric cancer.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the alterations of gastrin secretion of G cells, somatostatin secretion of D cells and the change of G (D) cells in rat gastric ulcer.
METHODS: An acetic-acid-induced rat gastric ulcer model was established. The histological structure of rat antral mucosa and the ultrastructure of mucosal cells were observed generally, through microscope and through electron microscope. The content of gastrin or somatostatin in serum or in antral tissue was measured via radioimmunoassay. The shape, number, size of G (D) cells, and the ratio of number and size of G/D cells were viewed and analyzed with immunohistochemical technique and image analysis system. G (D) cells and the secretive gastrin (somatostatin) granules in G (D) cells were observed through immunoel-ectron microscope and analyzed in image analysis system.
RESULTS: G (D) cells and the secretive gastrin (somatostatin) granules in G (D) cells were observed through immunoelectron microscope successfully. In gastric ulcer rat the secretive gastrin in G cells increased, the secretive somatostatin in D cells declined, the number of G cells increases and the size of G cells declined; both the number and the size of D cells declined, both the ratio of the number and size of G/D cells increased, both the content of gastrin in serum and in antral tissue increased, and both the content of somatostatin in serum and in antral tissue declined.
CONCLUSION: The rat gastric ulcer induces the changes of G cells and D cells, secretive gastrin in G cells and secretive somatostatin in D cells, as well as the contents of gastrin and somatostatin.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the intragastric mechanisms for regulation of gastric neuroendocrine functions during gastric distention in isolated vascularly perfused rat stomach.
METHODS: Isolated vascularly perfused rat stomach was prepared, then the gastric lumen was distended with either 5, 10 or 15 mL pH7 isotonic saline during a period of 20 min. During the distention, the axonal blocker tetrodotoxin (TTX), the cholinergic antagonist atropine, or the putative somatostatin-antagonist cyclo [7-aminoheptanoyl-Phe-D-Trp-Lys-Thr(Bzl)] were applied by vascular perfusion. The releases of gastrin and somatostatin were then examined by radioimmunoassay.
RESULTS: The graded gastric distention caused a significant volume-dependent decrease in gastrin secretion [-183 ± 75 (5 mL), -385 ± 86 (10 mL) and -440 ± 85 (15 mL) pg/20 min] and a significant increase of somatostatin secretion [260 ± 102 (5 mL), 608 ± 148 (10 mL) and 943 ± 316 (15 mL) pg/20 min]. In response to 10 mL distention, the infusion of either axonal blocker TTX (10-6 M) or cholinergic blocker atropine (10-7 M) had a similar affect. They both attenuated the decrease of gastrin release by approximately 50%, and attenuated the increase of somatostatin release by approximately 40%. The infusion of somatostatin-antagonist cyclo [7-aminoheptanoyl-Phe-D-Trp-Lys-Thr(Bzl)] (10-6 M) attenuated the decrease of gastrin release by about 60%. Furthermore, combined infusion of the somatostatin-antagonist and atropine completely abolished distention-induced inhibition of gastrin release.
CONCLUSION: The present data suggest that distention of isolated rat stomach stimulates somatostatin release via cholinergic and non-cholinergic TTX-insensitive pathways. Both somatostatin and intrinsic cholinergic pathways are responsible for distention-induced inhibition of gastrin release.

Abstract
AIM: To assess the safety and efficacy of different intravenous chemotherapeutic regimens in patients with gastric carcinomas who had undergone gastrectomy.
METHODS: A meta-analysis of all the relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed. Language was restricted to Chinese and English. RCTs were identified from Medline and Embase (1980-2001/4), and Chinese Bio-medicine Database (1990-2001/1). Literature references were checked at the same time. We included randomized and quasi-randomized trials comparing the efficacy of intravenous chemotherapy after gastrectomy with that of surgery alone in patients with confirmed gastric carcinomas who had undergone gastrectomy. Selection criteria were: randomized or quasi-randomized trials with following-up results; Trials could be double-blind, single-blind or not blind; Chemotherapy groups were given intravenous chemotherapy after gastrectomy without neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion, radiotherapy or chemoimmunotherapy; Controlled group included those receiving gastrectomy alone. The following data were extracted: the number of survival and death by the end of the follow-up; the different agents and doses of the intravenous chemotherapy; the baseline of the chemotherapy group and the controlled arm; the serious adverse events; the statistical consideration; cost-effectiveness analysis. The statistical analysis was performed by RevMan4.1 software which was provided by the Cochrane Collaboration. A P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Meta-analysis was done with random effects model. Heterogeneity was checked by chi-square test. Sensitivity analysis was performed by excluding the trials in which Jadad-scale was only 1 score. The result was expressed with odds ratio (OR) for the categorical variable.
RESULTS: Fourteen trials involving 4543 patients were included. Meta-analysis was done with random effects model Heterogeneity and sensitivity analysis were performed also. The effect of intravenous chemotherapy after gastrectomy was better than surgery alone (odds ratio 0.56, 95%CI 0.40-0.79). There was a significant difference between the two groups by u-test (P = 0.0008). Sensitivity analysis revealed the same difference (odds ratio 0.81, 95%CI 0.70-0.94). Of fourteen trials, only three studies were of high quality according to the Jadad-scale (with three score). There was one meta-analysis trial and the others, about ten trials, were of low quality. There was no trial which mentioned sample-size calculation, allocation concealment, intention-to-treat analysis. Most of the trials didn’t describe the blind-procedure. There were five trials which detailed the side-effects according to the toxicity grade by WHO standard. The side-effects halting treatment were haematologic and biochemical toxicity, debilitating nausea and vomiting. There were two patients died of chemotherapy toxicity.
CONCLUSION: Based on the review, intravenous chemotherapy after gastrectomy may have positive treatment effect on gastric cancer. However, the evidence is not strong because of the general low methodologic quality of the RCTs. Therefore, we can’t make the conclusion that intravenous chemotherapy after gastrectomy may have better treatment effect on gastric cancer than that of surgery alone. Rigorously designed, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are required.

Abstract
AIM: To observe the expression of Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in gastric carcinomas and precancerosis lesions, to evaluate the immune state of such patients, and to then study the clinical significance of hTERT and immune state for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of gastric cancer.
METHODS: In situ hybridization was used to detect the expression of hTERT mRNA in 116 endoscopic of gastric mucosa. Analyzed tissue samples were as follows: 30 cases of chronic superficial gastritis (CSG), 44 of precancerosis lesions (including 27 of chronic atrophic gastritis, 8 of adenomatous polyp and 9 of gastric ulcer) and 42 of gastric cancer (GC). In addition, the T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD8+) and natural killer cells (NK) in peripheral blood were determined by flow cytometric analysis (FCM) in 30 cases of CSG, 27 of precancerosis (chronic atrophic gastritis, CAG), and 42 of GC. The data were compared with those of normal control (NC).
RESULTS: The detected positive rate of hTERT varied as follows: 86% (36/42) in GC, 36% (16/44) in precancerosis lesions and 0% (0/30) in CSG. The expression of hTERT mRNA was not associated with patient gender, tumor location, macroscopic type, lymph node metastasis, or degree of differentiation. It was found that the CD3+, CD4+ of the CSG group were lower than that of NC (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ ratio) and NK cells of CAG were remarkably lower than that of NC and CSG groups (P < 0.05-0.01). Values of T cells and NK cells of the GC group were significantly abnormal when compared with the CAG group (P < 0.05-0.01). Furthermore, with tumor progression, the function of T cells was weakened gradually.
CONCLUSION: The expression of telomerase may be a crucial step in gastric carcinogenesis and increased hTERT mRNA may serve as a novel marker for diagnosis of GC. The immune state of patients with GC and precancerosis was somewhat depressed, which indicates the importance of cellular immunological assays in cancer patients.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the relationship among gastrin, somatostatin, G and D cells in gastric ulcer and in its healing process in rats.
METHODS: Fourty-nine Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups. The gastric ulcer model was induced by acetic acid successfully. The gastrin and the somatostatin in rat plasma, gastric fluid and antral tissue were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). G and D cells in antral mucosa were analyzed with polyclonal antibody of gastrin and somatostatin by immunohistochemical method and Quantimet 500 image analysis system.
RESULTS: In gastric ulcer, the level of gastrin in plasma, gastric fluid, and antral tissue increased, that of somatostatin declined, and the disorder gradually recovered to the normal level in the healing process. Immunohistochemical technique of G and D cells in antral mucosa demonstrated that the number of G cells increased and that of D cells decreased, both areas of G and D cells declined, the ratio of number and area of G/D increased in gastric ulcer, and the disorder gradually recovered in the healing process.
CONCLUSION: In gastric ulcer, the increased gastrin secreted by G cells, the declined somatostatin secreted by D cells, and the disordered G/D cell ratio can lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction.
