Abstract
One fifth of the world population live in East Asia comprising Japan, Korea, and China where ischemic heart disease, a major component of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), is the second most frequent cause of death. Each of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), remnant lipoproteins, and lipoprotein(a), summarized as non-high-density lipoproteins (non-HDL) or apolipoprotein B (apoB) containing lipoproteins, causes ASCVD. However, a significant proportion of the evidence on lipoproteins and lipoprotein cholesterol with risk of ASCVD came from White people mainly living in Europe and North America and not from people living in East Asia or of East Asian descent. With a unique biological, geohistorical, and social background in this world region, East Asians have distinctive characteristics that might have potential impact on the association of lipoproteins and lipoprotein cholesterol with risk of ASCVD. Considering the movement across national borders in the World, understanding of lipoprotein and lipoprotein cholesterol evidence on ASCVD in East Asia is important for both East Asian and non-East Asian populations wherever they live in the World.In this review, we introduce the biological features of lipoproteins and lipoprotein cholesterol and the evidence for their association with risk of ASCVD in East Asian and European populations. We also provide an overview of guideline recommendations for prevention of ASCVD in these two different world regions. Finally, specific preventive strategies and future perspectives are touched upon.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia can be defined as an abnormality in serum lipid levels that is substantially linked to genetic variations and lifestyle factors, such as diet patterns, and has distinct sex-specific characteristics. We aimed to elucidate the genetic impact of dyslipidemia according to sex and explore the associations between genetic variants and dietary patterns in large-scale population-based cohorts. After performing genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in male, female, and entire cohorts, significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in the three groups, and genetic risk scores (GRSs) were calculated by summing the risk alleles from the selected SNPs. After adjusting for confounding variables, the risk of dyslipidemia was 2.013-fold and 2.535-fold higher in the 3rd quartile GRS group in the male and female cohorts, respectively, than in the 1st quartile GRS group. While instant noodle and soft drink intake were significantly associated with GRS related to hyperlipidemia in male cohorts, coffee consumption was substantially related to GRS related to hyperlipidemia in female cohorts. Considering the influence of genetic factors and dietary patterns, the findings of this study suggest the potential for implementing sex-specific strategic interventions to avoid dyslipidemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies of the effects of atmospheric pollutants on lipid profiles remain inconsistent and controversial. AIM The study was aimed to investigate the relationship between the exposure to ambient air pollutants and variations in the blood lipid profiles in the population. METHODS A comprehensive search of three different databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) until December 17, 2022, yielded 17 origional studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria for a meta-analysis. Aggregate effect measures and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the relevant ambient air pollutants were deduced employing random effects models. RESULTS The collective meta-analysis indicated that long-term exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and CO showed a substantial correlation with TC (PM1: β = 2.04, 95%CI = 0.15-3.94; PM2.5: β = 1.11, 95%CI = 0.39-1.84; PM10: β = 1.70, 95%CI = 0.67-2.73; CO: β = 0.08, 95%CI = 0.06-0.10), PM10 exhibited a significant association with TG (β = 0. 537,95% CI = 0.09-0.97), whereas HDL-C demonstrated notable relationships with PM1, PM10, SO2 and CO (PM1: β = -2.38, 95%CI = -4.00 to -2.76; PM10: β = -0.77, 95%CI = -1.33 to -0.21; SO2: β = -0.91, 95%CI = -1.73 to -0.10; CO: β = -0.03, 95%CI = -0.05 to 0.00). PM2.5, PM10 also showed significant associations with LDL-C (PM2.5: β = 1.44 95%CI = 0.48-2.40; PM10: β = 1.62 95%CI = 0.90-2.34). Subgroup analysis revealed significant or stronger correlations predominantly in cohort study designs, with higher male comparisons, and in regions exhibiting elevated contaminant levels. CONCLUSION In summary, the analysis substantiates that ambient air pollutants can be recognized as potent contributors to alterations in lipid profiles, particularly particulate pollutants which exert more obvious effects on lipid profiles.

Association between weekend catch-up sleep and dyslipidemia among Korean workers. Sci Rep 2023; 13:925. Abstract
Within competitive sociocultural environments, most Korean workers are likely to shorten their sleep duration during the weekday. Short sleep duration is associated with dyslipidemia; however, studies on the correlation between various sleep patterns and dyslipidemia are still lacking. In hence this study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) and dyslipidemia among South Korean workers. Our study used data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The analysis covered 4,085 participants, excluding those who were diagnosed with dyslipidemia and not currently participating in economic activities. Weekend CUS was calculated as the absolute difference between self-reported weekday and weekend sleep duration. Dyslipidemia was diagnosed based on the levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides in blood samples collected after 9-12 h of fasting. After adjusting for sociodemographic, economic, health-related, and sleep-related factors, a negative association of weekend CUS with dyslipidemia was observed in male workers (odds ratio: 0.76, 95% confidence interval: 0.61-0.95). Further, workers with total sleep duration of 7-8 h, night workers, and white-collar workers with CUS were at relatively low risk of dyslipidemia compared to the non-CUS group. Less than 2 h of weekend CUS was negatively related to dyslipidemia in Korean workers, especially males. This suggests that sleeping more on weekends for workers who had a lack of sleep during the week can help prevent dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Background With modernization development, multiple studies of atmospheric particulate matter exposure conducted in China have confirmed adverse cardiovascular health effects. However, there are few studies on the effect of particulate matter on blood lipid levels in patients with cardiovascular disease, especially in southern China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between short- and long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter and the levels of blood lipid markers in hypertension inpatients in Ganzhou, China. Methods Data on admission lipid index testing for hypertension inpatients which were divided into those with and without arteriosclerosis disease were extracted from the hospital's big data center from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020, and air pollution and meteorology data were acquired from the China urban air quality real time release platform from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2020 and climatic data center from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020, with data integrated according to patient admission dates. A semi-parametric generalized additive model (GAM) was established to calculate the association between ambient particulate matter and blood lipid markers in hypertension inpatients with different exposure time in 1 year. Results Long-term exposure to particulate matter was associated with increased Lp(a) in three kinds of people, and with increased TC and decreased HDL-C in total hypertension and hypertension with arteriosclerosis. But particulate matter was associated with increased HDL-C for hypertension inpatients without arteriosclerosis, at the time of exposure in the present study. It is speculated that hypertension inpatients without arteriosclerosis has better statement than hypertension inpatients with arteriosclerosis on human lipid metabolism. Conclusion Long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter is associated with adverse lipid profile changes in hypertension inpatients, especially those with arteriosclerosis. Ambient particulate matter may increase the risk of arteriosclerotic events in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between the severity of periodontitis (exposure) and dyslipidemia (outcome). METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of users of public health services. Periodontitis was defined using the Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the American Academy of Periodontology criteria. Lipid evaluation used data on systemic biomarkers. Dyslipidemia diagnosis was based on the Guidelines of total cardiovascular risk of the World Health Organization. Weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured, and socioeconomic-demographic, lifestyle behavior factors, general and oral health conditions of the participants were collected. Hierarchical and logistic regression analyzes were used to determine the association between the exposures and the outcome. Odds Ratios, unadjusted and adjusted, and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. RESULTS Of 1,011 individuals examined, 75.17% had dyslipidemia, and 84.17% had periodontitis, 0.2% with mild, 48.56% moderate, and 35.41% severe disease. The association between periodontitis and dyslipidemia was maintained through hierarchical analysis and in the multiple regression modeling, showing that the occurrences of dyslipidemia in the group with periodontitis, and its moderate and severe levels, were, respectively, 14%, 30%, and 16% higher compared with those without periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS The results showed a positive association between moderate and severe periodontitis and dyslipidemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have explored the associations between ambient air pollution and blood lipid levels. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap based on a routine health examination cohort in Shijiazhuang, China. METHODS We included 7063 participants who took the routine health examination for 2-3 times at Hebei General Hospital from January 2016 to December 2018. Individual serum levels of cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured. Their three-month average exposure to air pollution prior to the routine health examinations was estimated using inverse distance weighted method. We used linear mixed-effects regression models to examine the associations between air pollution and levels of blood lipids while controlling for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol drinking, temperature, humidity, with a random effect for each individual. RESULTS Particles with diameters ≤2.5 μm and ≤10 μm (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) were all positively associated with TC, TG, and LDL-C and negatively associated with HDL-C, in single pollutant models. Each 10 μg/m3 increment of 3-month average PM2.5 was associated with 0.65% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.03%-1.28%], 0.56% (95%CI: 0.33%-0.79%) and 0.63% (95%CI: 0.35%-0.91%) increment in TG, TC, and LDL-C, and 0.91% (95%CI: 0.68%-1.13%) decrease in HDL-C. In two-pollutant models, the effects of gaseous pollutants on blood lipids were weakened, while those of PMs were strengthened. Stronger associations were presented in the elderly (≥60 years) and overweight/obese (BMI ≥ 24) participants. CONCLUSIONS Ambient air pollution had significantly adverse effects on blood lipid levels, especially in overweight/obese and elderly individuals. CAPSULE Significant associations between increased air pollution and worse blood lipid levels were found, especially in overweight/obese and elderly individuals.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Hypertension awareness, treatment, and control have been substantially improved in the last decades worldwide, but hypertension management in younger adults is still challenged. We analyzed a nationally representative sample of Korea to investigate factors affecting hypertension management among the young Korean population. Methods Among 8,024 young adults aged 30–49 years from the 2014–2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1,103 participants with hypertension were analyzed to identify factors associated with hypertension management status. Multiple logistic regression models were conducted separately by sex. Results Young adults with hypertension showed a low rate of awareness (35.8%), treatment (30.9%), and control (23.0%). The older age (40–49 years), obese (body mass index ≥25.0 kg/m2), having diabetes mellitus (DM), and having past-history of cardiovascular disease were positively associated with awareness, and taking health examination in the past 2 years were positively associated with both treatment and control of hypertension among male. Young females who were older (40–49 years), rural residents, unemployed, not taking sodium over the recommended amount, having dyslipidemia, and having DM showed a higher likelihood of awareness. Young females who have not experienced unmet medical needs in the past year were more likely to be treated or controlled with hypertension. Conclusions The factors associated with hypertension awareness, treatment, and control were different by sex and age group. Enhancing attention on hypertension among young hypertension and encouraging them to visit clinics would be key strategies to improve hypertension management among the young hypertensive population.

Abstract
AIM To determine in the adult population the crude and the sex- and age-adjusted prevalence rates of hypertriglyceridaemia (HTG) and to assess its association with cardiovascular risk factors, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases. METHODS Cross-sectional observational study conducted in Primary Care, with 6,588 adult study subjects, randomly selected on base-population. Patients had HTG if the triglyceride level was≥150mg/dL (≥1.7mmol/L), or were on lipid-lowering therapy to lower triglyceride. Associations were assessed by univariate and multivariate analysis, and crude and sex- and age-adjusted prevalence rates were determined. RESULTS The arithmetic and geometric means of triglyceride levels were respectively 120.5 and 104.2mg/dL in global population, 135.7 and 116.0mg/dL in men, and 108.6 and 95.7mg/dL in women. The crude HTG prevalence rates were 29.6% in global population, 36.9% in men and 23.8% in women. The sex- and age-adjusted HTG prevalence rates were 27.0% in global population, 34.6% in men and 21.4% in women. The independent variables that were most associated with HTG were hypercholesterolemia (OR: 4.6), low HDL-C (OR: 4.1), hepatic steatosis (OR: 2.8), diabetes (OR: 2.0), and obesity (OR: 1.9). CONCLUSIONS The means of triglyceride levels and HTG prevalence rates are intermediate between those of other national and international studies. A fifth of the female adult population and more than a third of the male population had HTG. The independent factors associated with HTG were hypercholesterolemia and low HDL-C, and the cardiometabolic variables diabetes, hepatic steatosis and obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular risk remains increased despite optimal low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level induced by intensive statin therapy. Therefore, recent guidelines recommend non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) as a secondary target for preventing cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of omega-3 fatty acids (OM3-FAs) in combination with atorvastatin compared to atorvastatin alone in patients with mixed dyslipidemia. METHODS This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, and phase III multicenter study included adults with fasting triglyceride (TG) levels ≥200 and <500 mg/dL and LDL-C levels <110 mg/dL. Eligible subjects were randomized to ATOMEGA (OM3-FAs 4,000 mg plus atorvastatin calcium 20 mg) or atorvastatin 20 mg plus placebo groups. The primary efficacy endpoints were the percent changes in TG and non-HDL-C levels from baseline at the end of treatment. RESULTS After 8 weeks of treatment, the percent changes from baseline in TG (-29.8% vs. 3.6%, P<0.001) and non-HDL-C (-10.1% vs. 4.9%, P<0.001) levels were significantly greater in the ATOMEGA group (n=97) than in the atorvastatin group (n=103). Moreover, the proportion of total subjects reaching TG target of <200 mg/dL in the ATOMEGA group was significantly higher than that in the atorvastatin group (62.9% vs. 22.3%, P<0.001). The incidence of adverse events did not differ between the two groups. CONCLUSION The addition of OM3-FAs to atorvastatin improved TG and non-HDL-C levels to a significant extent compared to atorvastatin alone in subjects with residual hypertriglyceridemia.

Abstract
Both air pollution and dyslipidemias contributed to large number of deaths and disability-adjusted life lost years. Long-term air pollution exposure was related to changed blood lipids and risk of dyslipidemias. This study was designed to evaluate relationships between air pollutants, blood lipids and prevalence of dyslipidemias in a Chinese rural population exposed to high-level air pollution based on baseline data of The Henan Rural Cohort study. An amount of 39,057 participants from rural areas in China were included. The 3-year average exposure of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2) was estimated by a spatiotemporal model. Logistic and linear regression models were employed to explore relationships between air pollutants, blood lipids (TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C) and prevalence of dyslipidemias. The three-year concentration of PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 was 72.8 ± 2.3 μg/m3, 131.5 ± 5.7 μg/m3and 39.1 ± 3.1 μg/m3, respectively. Overall, increased air pollution exposure was related to increased TC and LDL-C, while decreased TG and HDL-C. Each 1-μg/m3 increment of PM2.5 was related to 0.10% (0.07%-0.19%) increase in TC, 0.63% (0.50%-0.77%) increase in LDL-C, 2.93% (2.70%-3.16%) decrease in TG, 0.49% (0.38%-0.60%) decrease in HDL-C; and 5.7% (95%CI: 3.7%-7.6%), 4.0% (95%CI: 2.1%-6.0%) and 3.8% (95%CI: 2.5%-5.1%) increase in odds for hypercholesterolemia, hyperbetalipoproteinemia and hypoalphalipoproteinemia, respectively. Stronger associations were found in male and older participants. Findings suggest that air pollutants were associated with changed blood lipid levels and higher risk of dyslipidemias among rural population. Male and elder people should pay more attention to personal safety protection.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is a well-established risk factor for CVD. Studies suggest that similar fat accumulation in a given population might result in different levels of dyslipidemia risk among individuals; for example, despite similar or leaner body composition compared with Caucasians, Asians of Korean descent experience a higher prevalence of dyslipidemia. These variations imply a possible role of gene-obesity interactions on lipid profiles. Genome-wide association studies have identified more than 500 loci regulating plasma lipids, but the interaction structure between genes and obesity traits remains unclear. We hypothesized that some loci modify the effects of obesity on dyslipidemia risk and analyzed extensive gene-environment interactions (G×Es) at genome-wide levels to search for replicated gene-obesity interactive SNPs. In four Korean cohorts (n = 18,025), we identified and replicated 20 gene-obesity interactions, including novel variants (SCN1A and SLC12A8) and known lipid-associated variants (APOA5, BUD13, ZNF259, and HMGCR). When we estimated the additional heritability of dyslipidemia by considering G×Es, the gain was substantial for triglycerides (TGs) but mild for LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (Total-C); the interaction explained up to 18.7% of TG, 2.4% of LDL-C, and 1.9% of Total-C heritability associated with waist-hip ratio. Our findings suggest that some individuals are prone to develop abnormal lipid profiles, particularly with regard to TGs, even with slight increases in obesity indices; ethnic diversities in the risk alleles might partly explain the differential dyslipidemia risk between populations. Research about these interacting variables may facilitate knowledge-based approaches to personalize health guidelines according to individual genetic profiles.

Abstract
Despite the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids from fish or fish oil on cardiovascular diseases, limited information is available regarding the effects of oily fish in the diet on the risk of dyslipidemia. This study aimed to investigate the association between oily fish consumption and the incidence of dyslipidemia among Korean adults included in the Health Examinees Gem (HEXA-G) cohort during 5 years of follow-up. In total, 20,670 participants (5710 men and 14,960 women) were included in this study. The average intake of oily fish including dark meat fish, such as mackerel, pacific saury, and Spanish mackerel, and eel, was estimated using food frequency questionnaires. Oily fish consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of hypertriglyceridemia in both men (Relative risk (RR) comparing extreme quintiles = 0.75; 95% CI 0.60–0.95; P for trend = 0.0121) and women (RR comparing extreme quintiles = 0.81; 95% CI 0.69–0.96; P for trend = 0.0110) after adjusting for potential confounders. In conclusion, increased consumption of oily fish was significantly associated with a lower risk of hypertriglyceridemia in the general Korean population. Future randomized clinical trials or prospective studies are required to confirm these findings in the Korean or other Asian populations.

Abstract
Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) provides a useful means of assessing cardiovascular events and diabetic complications. However, the nature of associations between baPWV and microalbuminuria (MAU) and its presence in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM) have rarely been investigated. This study aimed to examine the association between baPWV and MAU coupled with prediction of MAU using baPWV measurement among Type 2 DM patients. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 424 Type 2 DM patients who visited the cardiology and endocrinology department at a tertiary level health care facility, Republic of Korea between 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2008. Clinical and laboratory data were collected, and risk factors associated with MAU and prediction of risk for the development of MAU using baPWV measurement. The association between MAU and baPWV was examined using multivariable logistic regression analysis and predicted MAU by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Of the 424 Type 2 DM patients, 93 (21.9%) had MAU (20-200 μg/min). baPWV (cm/sec) was found to be significantly correlated with MAU levels (ug/min) (r = 0.791, p < 0.001). Further, baPWV was significantly associated MAU with higher odds ratio (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 10.899; 95% confidence interval (CI) (4.518-26.292)). Similarly, smoking (AOR 10.899; 95% CI (4.518-26.292)), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (mg/dL) (AOR 1.017; 95% CI (1.001-1.033)) were also significantly associated with MAU. The appropriate cut-off value for baPWV to predict MAU 20 μg/min in our study was 1700 cm/sec (area under ROC curve = 0.976). This study shows that baPWV, cigarette smoking, and LDL-cholesterol are associated with MAU in Type 2 DM patients and suggests that a baPWV cut-off of 1700 cm/sec could be used to predict the presence of MAU (20 μg/min) in Type 2 DM patients in the Korean community.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in Korea according to sex and age, and to identify factors that were associated with the prevalence, awareness, and control of these cardiovascular risk factors among middle-aged Koreans.A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 2013 data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) database. A total of 136,755 individuals were considered eligible based on no history of stroke or heart disease, age of 40 to 64 years at the examination, and completion of health examinations. Data regarding demographic factors and cardiovascular risk factors had been obtained using questionnaires, physical examinations, and blood tests.Hypertension was the most prevalent condition among middle-aged Koreans (25.76%), followed by dyslipidemia (16.58%) and diabetes (10.22%). Among these three conditions, dyslipidemia was associated with the lowest awareness rates (24.14%). Hypertension and diabetes were more prevalent among men than among women, although the prevalence of dyslipidemia was higher among women > 50 years old. The prevalence of hypertension and diabetes increased with advancing age among men and women, although the prevalence of dyslipidemia decreased with age among men (highest prevalence: 50.59% among men aged between 40 and 44 years). Among Korean men (relative to women), the odds ratios were 1.50 for hypertension, 1.96 for diabetes, and 0.82 for dyslipidemia. Age, central obesity, and body mass index were significantly associated with the development of all 3 conditions.There are sex- and age-specific patterns in the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in Korea. Dyslipidemia is becoming increasingly common although most middle-aged Koreans are not aware of this condition leading to low control rate. These results may help identify population subgroups at a high risk of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, and may guide the management of cardiovascular disease in Korea.

Abstract
Few long-term follow-up studies have compared the changes in renal function according to the type of statin used in Korea. We compared the long-term effects of statin intensity and type on the changes in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). We extracted data of patients who took statin for the first time. We analyzed whether or not different statins affect the changes in GFR at 3 months after baseline and 4 years after. We included 3678 patients and analyzed the changes in GFR. The GFR decreased by 3.2% ± 0.4% on average 4 years after the first statin prescription, indicating statistically significant deterioration (from 83.5 ± 0.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 to 79.9 0.4 mL/min/1.73 m2, P < 0.001). When comparing the GFR among different statins, significant differences were observed between atorvastatin and fluvastatin (-5.3% ± 0.7% vs. 1.2% ± 2.2%, P < 0.05) and between atorvastatin and simvastatin (-5.3% ± 0.7% vs. -0.7% ± 0.8%, P < 0.05). In pitavastatin (odds ratio [OR]= 0.64, 95% confidence interval [CI]= 0.46-0.87, P < 0.005) and simvastatin (OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.53-0.91, P < 0.008), the GFR rate that decreased by < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 was significantly lower than that of atorvastatin. Regarding long-term statin intake, GFR changed with the type of statin. This work is the first in Korea to compare each statin in terms of changes in the GFR after the statin prescription.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels are established risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, a leading cause of death in China. We sought to assess the latest levels of serum lipids, prevalence of dyslipidemia and achievement of LDL-C lowering targets among Chinese adults. METHODS Data was obtained from a national representative survey recruited 163,641 adults aged >18years in mainland China between 2013 and 2014. Fasting serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) were measured by standard methods. Multiple logistic regression was preformed to estimate potential risk factors for dyslipidemias. Proportion of residents not achieve the therapeutic goals for LDL-C by atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) risk stratification were evaluated. RESULTS Nationally, the population-weighted means of TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C, and median of TG were 4.70, 1.35, 2.88, and 1.49mmol/L, respectively. The prevalence of high TC, high LDL-C, low HDL-C and high TG was 6.9%, 8.1%, 20.4% and 13.8%. Among individuals with high ASCVD risk, 74.5% had uncontrolled LDL-C levels (<2.6mmol/L) and 5.5% of them were treated. For very-high-risk individuals, 93.2% didn't achieve their LDL-lowering goals (<1.8mmol/L) and 14.5% of them were treated. CONCLUSIONS Chinese adults currently experienced a high prevalence of abnormal serum lipid levels, more common in urban adults or those with obesity or central obesity. A significant proportion of people with high or very high ASCVD risk didn't meet LDL-C targets. Improvements in achievement of lipid-level targets and of LDL-lowering therapy rates based on ASCVD risk stratification were necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic and abnormal increase of different types of dyslipidemia leads to some important diseases, such as constriction and abstraction of vessels in various parts of the body, especially in the heart. High lipid profile, such as increased total cholesterol and LDL as well as decreased HDL are recognized as cardiovascular disease risk factors. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of different types of dyslipidemia in Iran by a meta-analysis method. METHODS A literature search for studies published during 1998-2015 was carried out using both Persian and English databases (SID, Magiran, IranMedex, MedLib, PubMed, and Scopus). Keywords such as lipid, dyslipidemia, CVD, cardiovascular risk factors, hypercholesterolemia, high LDL-C, low HDL-C, and prevalence were used in the search. Random-effects model was used for the analysis using STATA (version 11.2). RESULTS In total, 163 articles were identified of which 49 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The estimated prevalence (95% confidence interval) of eligible articles for high cholesterol ≥200 mg/dl and ≥240 mg/dl was 42% (95% CI: 38-45) and 17% (95% CI: 14-20), respectively. Moreover, the prevalence (95% confidence interval) for high LDL-C ≥130 mg/dl and ≥160 mg/dl was 40% (95% CI: 32-48) and 19% (95% CI: 16-23), respectively. The pooled prevalence estimate for low HDL-C (<40 among males, <50 among females) was 43% (95% CI: 33-53) in both sexes of the Iranian people. All types of lipid component abnormalities (hypercholesterolemia, high LDL-C, and low HDL-C) were more prevalent in women. CONCLUSION The results indicate that the prevalence of different types of dyslipidemia in Iran is substantial. Given the risk of complications (e.g. cardiovascular disease and control of different types of dyslipidemia) in Iranian people, it is important to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study investigated the association between frequency of having breakfast and dyslipidemia in South Korean adults aged 30 or over. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study, including 10,874 participants, was based on the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2013 and 2016. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, we examined the associations between frequency of having breakfast (and other covariates) and dyslipidemia in men and women. RESULTS Dyslipidemia was more common among male participants with lower frequency of having breakfast in a week and was significantly high in "0 times a week" group (OR = 1.42, 95% CI, 1.13-1.78) compared with 5-7 times/week. This trend was observed in those aged 40-59 years, white collar workers, those living with their spouse, and overweight or obese participants among males and in females aged 40-49 and ≥ 60 years. Statistically significant tendency of having dyslipidemia was observed with decreasing frequency of having breakfast in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides in males (LDL-C: p for trend < 0.0001, TG: p for trend = 0.0004), but not in females. CONCLUSION Frequency of having breakfast was associated with reduced dyslipidemia rate. The risk of dyslipidemia with a low frequency of breakfast was particularly observed in males aged 40-59, white collar workers, those living with a spouse, and postmenopausal females aged ≥ 60.

Abstract
AIM Prescription of statins to patients with chronic liver disease whose alanine transaminase (ALT) is over three times the upper normal limit (UNL) is not recommended. In this study, we attempted to evaluate patients with baseline ALT levels > 3 × UNL who were prescribed statins without ethical problems, using electronic medical records. METHODS We enrolled subjects with ALT levels > 3 × UNL. The patients were divided into three groups consisting of those who had been taking agents affecting liver function (HEPA) and continued to do so after the statin prescription (HepCon), those who had not previously taken HEPA and began doing so after statin prescription (HepNew), and those who had never taken HEPA (HepNo). All ALT levels were determined within 3 months of statins administration, and changes were monitored. RESULTS From January 2009 to December 2012, 61 patients with baseline ALT levels > 3 × UNL were prescribed statins for the first time. During the 3-month ALT monitoring, levels of the HepCon, HepNew, and HepNo groups decreased by 45 ± 8%, 64 ± 10%, and 42 ± 8%, respectively; however, intergroup differences were not significant (P = .386). All the subjects who were administered statins showed improvement or maintained their ALT levels, except for two subjects, which showed deterioration. However, the ALT levels of the two subjects subsequently remained stable. CONCLUSION It is not clear whether it is safe to prescribe statins to patients with ALT > 3 times the UNL. Our study showed that prescription of statins in combination with HEPA did not cause deleterious effects, suggesting that ALT levels > 3 times the UNL do not have harmful effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of change in waist circumference (WC) and incidence of dyslipidaemia in a cohort study of a rural Chinese population. METHODS Change in WC (ΔWC) was defined as the value at follow-up minus the corresponding value at baseline. Risk of dyslipidaemia associated with ΔWC was assessed by odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals in a logistic regression model, and the odds ratios were transformed to relative risks (RRs). RESULTS Among 7691 participants without dyslipidaemia at baseline, 3213 (41.78%) showed dyslipidaemia at 6 year follow-up. Risk of dyslipidaemia was decreased for participants with the first quartile of ΔWC and normal baseline WC (adjusted RR [aRR] = 0.79 [95% confidence interval: 0.64-0.98]) and was increased with the fourth quartile of ΔWC and male gender, age 18 to 30 years, age 31 to 50 years, or normal baseline WC (aRR = 1.55 [1.19-2.03], 2.40 [1.16-4.95], 1.32 [1.06-1.64], and 1.66 [1.35-2.04], respectively). The risk of dyslipidaemia increased with change in WC from normal at baseline to abnormal at follow-up for both genders (aRR = 1.88 [1.39-2.55] for men and 1.60 [1.30-1.97] for women) and decreased with abnormal baseline WC changed to normal WC for women (aRR = 0.61 [0.45-0.83]). CONCLUSIONS Dynamic change in waist circumference was closely related to the incidence of dyslipidaemia in a rural Chinese population. Waist circumference reduction could decrease dyslipidaemia risk, whereas WC increase may increase the risk. Interventions to control or reduce WC to within the normal range are important for early prevention of dyslipidaemia.

Abstract
The direct link between lipid metabolism alterations and the increase of cardiovascular risk are well documented. Dyslipidemias, including isolated high LDL-c or mixed dyslipidemia, such as those seen in diabetes (hypertriglyceridemia, high LDL-c or low HDL-c), correlate with a significant risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease worldwide. This review analyzes the current knowledge concerning the genetic basis of lipid metabolism alterations, emphasizing lipoprotein lipase gene mutations and the HindIII polymorphism, which are associated with decreased levels of triglycerides and LDL-c, as well as higher levels of HDL-c. These patterns would be associated with decreased global morbidity and mortality, providing protection against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Abstract
Purpose Metabolic syndrome (MS) is characterized by a collection of interdependent disorders, including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and diabetes. The current study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MS in Qom, Iran. Materials and Methods A population-based screening program was conducted in the city of Qom, in 845 urban adult men over 25 years old in 2014. Abdominal obesity, fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure, and the serum lipid profile were measured in subjects after fasting for at least 8 hours. MS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression. Results The overall prevalence of MS was 23.0%, and the most common prevalent metabolic abnormalities associated with MS were low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (<40 mg/dL) in 34.3% of subjects, a waist circumference >102 cm in 33.9%, blood pressure ≥130/85 mmHg in 27.6%, fasting triglycerides (TG) ≥150 mg/dL in 25%, and FBG ≥110 mg/dL in 20.6%. A FBG level ≥110 mg/dL (odds ratio [OR]=4.85; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.14~8.24), dyslipidemia (OR=3.51; 95% CI, 2.10~5.89), and a fasting TG ≥150 mg/dL were the most important factors contributing to MS. Conclusions The prevalence of MS in men in Qom was higher than has been reported in other countries, but it was lower than the mean values that have been reported elsewhere in Iran. FBG was the most important factor contributing to MS, and all elements of the lipid profile showed important associations with MS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical association between triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and hearing impairment in a Korean population. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study (n = 18,004). Participants were divided into 4 quartiles based on their TG/HDL-C ratio: first quartile (1Q), second quartile (2Q), third quartile (3Q), and fourth quartile (4Q). The threshold values at 0.5, 1, and 2 kHz were averaged to obtain the low- or mid-frequency pure-tone average (Low/Mid-Freq), and the values at 3, 4, and 6 kHz were averaged to obtain the high-frequency pure-tone average (High-Freq). The average hearing threshold (AHT) was calculated as the pure-tone average of the thresholds at 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kHz. Hearing loss (HL) was defined as an AHT of >40 dB. RESULTS The Low/Mid-Freq, High-Freq, and AHT values were the highest among participants in 4Q than among those in the other quartiles. Compared with those in 1Q, 2Q, or 3Q, participants in 4Q exhibited a 1.32, 1.27, and 1.16-fold higher odds for HL, respectively. Partial correlation coefficients for TG/HDL-C ratio were 0.065 for Low/Mid-Freq, 0.041 for High-Freq, and 0.060 for AHT (P < 0.001 for all). Linear regression analyses showed that β ± SE for TG/HDL-C ratio was 0.293 ± 0.038 on multivariate analysis. In addition, all subgroup analyses except diabetes participants showed statistically significant association between TG/HDL-C ratio and HL. CONCLUSION High TG/HDL-C ratio was associated with hearing impairment in a Korean population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Very few studies conducted in Korea have investigated the relationship between statins and the incidence of diabetes. Therefore, we analyzed the progression from normal blood glucose to prediabetes and then to diabetes mellitus (DM) according to the type, intensity, and dose of statin prescribed. METHODS Data of patients who were first prescribed statins between 2009 and 2011 were extracted from electronic medical records. Patients with normal blood glucose or prediabetes were observed for 4 years after initiation of statin therapy. RESULTS A total of 2890 patients were included in our study and analyzed on the basis of the first statin they were prescribed. The incidence rate of DM in patients with prediabetes was 1.72 times that of patients with normal glucose levels (odds ratio = 1.72, 95% confidence interval = 1.41-2.10, P < .001). Regarding progression from normal blood glucose to prediabetes, the incidence rate of prediabetes was significantly lower in patients prescribed pitavastatin (odds ratio = 0.62, 95% confidence interval = 0.40-0.96, P = .031) compared to that in patients prescribed atorvastatin. Regarding the progression from normal blood glucose or prediabetes to DM, there were no significant differences among all statins. CONCLUSIONS Lower DM incidence in patients prescribed pitavastatin appears to be primarily because of the lower rate of progression from normal blood glucose to prediabetes. These findings indicate that avoiding statins because of DM risk is unjustified and that clinicians should prescribe statins from the appropriate potency group.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE There are a few Korean studies on the economics of statins based on reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) data from other countries. This study aimed to analyse and compare the cost-effectiveness of statins according to the baseline LDL-C level in Korea. METHODS Between January 2009 and December 2015, the data of patients who were prescribed statins for the first time were extracted from electronic medical records. We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) based on the LDL-C reduction rate (CEA-RR) and target achievement rate. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Among high-intensity statins, the CEA-RR value of rosuvastatin (20 mg) was significantly lower than that of atorvastatin (40 mg) at all baseline LDL-C levels, except levels of 160-189 mg/dL. Additionally, at baseline LDL-C levels of 130-159 mg/dL, the CEA-RR value of rosuvastatin (20 mg) was three times lower than that of atorvastatin (40 mg) (9·1 ± 2·5 $/% vs. 31·7 ± 15·0 $/%, P < 0·001). Among moderate-to-low-intensity statins, rosuvastatin (5 mg) showed the lowest CEA-RR value (4·0 ± 0·6 $/%), and the value significantly increased for pitavastatin (2 mg) (8·0 ± 0·6 $/%), atorvastatin (10 mg) (9·5 ± 0·5 $/%), simvastatin (10·8 ± 1·1 $/%) and pravastatin (40 mg) (11·5 ± 0·9 $/%) in order (P < 0·0001). On changing from atorvastatin (10 mg) to atorvastatin (20 mg), the additional yearly cost was 16·0 and additional CEA-RR value was 2·74 $/%. On the other hand, on changing from atorvastatin (10 mg) to rosuvastatin (10 mg), the additional yearly cost was -16·3 and additional CEA-RR value was -1·8 $/%. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION We successfully compared the cost-effectiveness of statins according to the baseline LDL-C level in Korea. It is expected that our findings will help clinical decision-making with regard to statin prescription, and this will help reduce national medical expenditure.

Abstract
Given the rapid growth of the population of cancer survivors, increased attention has been paid to their health problems. Although gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers, empirical evidence of survivorship care is limited. The objectives of this study were to describe the health care status of gastric cancer survivors and to report the experience of using the shared-care model during a one-year experience at the cancer survivorship clinic in Seoul National University Hospital. This is a descriptive, single-center study of 250 long-term gastric cancer survivors who were referred to the survivorship clinic. The status of their health behaviors, comorbid conditions, secondary cancer screenings, and survivorship care status were investigated through questionnaires and examining the medical records. Among the survivors, 7.2% were current smokers, 8.8% were at-risk drinkers, and 32.4% were physically inactive. Among the patients who did not know their bone density status, the majority were in the osteopenic (37.1%) or osteoporotic range (24.1%). Screening among the eligible population within the recommended time intervals were 76.3% for colorectal cancer, but only 13.6% for lung cancer. All of the survivors were provided with counseling and medical management at the survivorship clinic, as appropriate. In conclusion, Long-term gastric cancer survivors have various unmet needs. Shared-care through survivorship clinics can be an effective solution for providing comprehensive care to cancer survivors.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate the relationship between various lipid abnormalities and albuminuria in hypertensive Korean adults. Data obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2011 to 2012 were analyzed. The study included 2330 hypertensive participants. Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were measured. Dyslipidemia parameters were defined as high TG ≥200 mg/dL, low HDL-C as HDL-C <40 mg/dL, high TC/HDL-C as TC/HDL-C ratio ≥4, high TG/HDL-C as TG/HDL-C ratio ≥3.8, and high LDL-C/HDL-C as LDL-C/HDL-C ratio ≥2.5. Albuminuria was defined as a urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥30 mg/g. Women with albuminuria showed significantly higher levels of TG, TC/HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C and a lower level of HDL-C than women without albuminuria (all P < 0.05). LogTG, TC/HDL-C, and logTG/HDL-C were positively correlated with ACR in both men and women; however, HDL-C was negatively correlated with ACR in women and non-HDL-C was positively correlated with ACR in men. In men, there was no association between ACR and lipid parameters. However, in women, higher values for logTG, TC/HDL-C, and logTG/HDL-C were associated with an increased odds ratio (OR) for albuminuria (OR [95% confidence interval]: 1.53 [1.06-2.21], 1.21 [1.02-1.45], and 1.78 [1.21-2.63], respectively) and HDL-C with a decreased OR for albuminuria (0.78 [0.67-0.92]) after adjusting for all covariates. LogTG, TC/HDL-C, and logTG/HDL-C were associated with an increased prevalence of albuminuria in hypertensive women. Screening and treatment for dyslipidemia may be necessary for hypertensive women to address potential albuminuria.

Abstract
Residual cardiovascular risk and failure of high density lipoprotein cholesterol raising treatment have refocused interest on targeting hypertriglyceridemia. Hypertriglyceridemia, triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, and remnant cholesterol have demonstrated to be important risk factors for cardiovascular disease; this has been demonstrated in experimental, genetic, and epidemiological studies. Fibrates can reduce cardiovascular event rates with or without statins. High dose omega-3 fatty acids continue to be evaluated and new specialized targeting treatment modulating triglyceride pathways, such as inhibition of apolipoprotein C-III and angiopoietin-like proteins, are being tested with regard to their effects on lipid profiles and cardiovascular outcomes. In this review, we will discuss the role of hypertriglyceridemia, triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and remnant cholesterol on cardiovascular disease, and the potential implications for treatment stargeting hypertriglyceridemia.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the prevalence of chronic diseases (CDs) among older patients in German general practices (GPs). METHODS A total of 840,319 patients older than 65 years (359,289 male and 481,030 female) who consulted a GP between January and December 2014 were selected. Ten different CDs were considered: hypertension, lipid metabolism, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease and osteoporosis. The prevalence, defined as the proportion of patients diagnosed with these disorders, was estimated. RESULTS All CDs were very common in older subjects. Hypertension was the most common CD, affecting 65.7% of men and 66.1% of women. Stroke was the least frequent CD, with 6.6% of men and 5.1% of women displaying this condition. More than one out of two subjects had between one and three CDs (men: 57.7% and women: 59.3%). Approximately 25% of subjects had four or more CDs (men: 26.6% and women: 23.6%). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that the prevalence of CDs is high in the German elderly population. Hypertension was the most frequent chronic condition and around 25% of patients displayed at least four CDs.

Abstract
Purpose Dyslipidemia has been established as one of the most important modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Due to the higher prevalence of dyslipidemia in males, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of dyslipidemia in Iranian urban men. Materials and Methods A screening program was conducted in 845 Iranian men 25 years of age and older in 2014. A health interview survey was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of self-reported dyslipidemia and to collect demographic data, as well as serum lipid profile screening by a reference laboratory. Lipoprotein levels was categorized based on the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and the data were analyzed using the chi-square test and analysis of variance. Results The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 51.8%, and the prevalence of various forms of dyslipidemia was as follows: hypercholesterolemia (≥240 mg/dL), 11.4%; hyper-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (≥160 mg/dL), 9.6%; hypertriglyceridemia (≥200 mg/dL), 25%; and hypo-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (<40 mg/dL), 34.3%. With the exception of hypo-HDL, all forms of dyslipidemia were significantly less common in men over 65 years of age (p<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence of hypo-HDL and hypertriglyceridemia was higher than expected in Iranian adult men, with half of men 25 years of age and older affected by at least one form of dyslipidemia. A large gap in primary and secondary care was observed, because nearly 80% of patients with dyslipidemia were unaware of their status. Urgent preventive programs and lifestyle changes are necessary to reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
AIM Self-perceived poor health is related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk perception, cardiovascular event, hospital readmission, and death from CVD. This study evaluated the associations between self-perceived health and actual CVD risk in South Koreans as well as the influence of sociodemographic and cardiovascular risk factors on self-perceived poor health. METHODS This is a secondary data analysis of the 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The sample was 4535 South Koreans aged 30-74 years without CVD. Self-perceived health status was compared with actual cardiovascular risk separately by sex using χ(2) -tests. Logistic regressions were used to identify potential sociodemographic and cardiovascular risk factors of self-perceived poor health. RESULTS Self-perceived poor health was related to higher CVD risk but there were substantial gaps between them. Among cardiovascular risk factors, dyslipidemia, obesity, smoking, and a family history of CVD did not affect self-perceived health. CONCLUSION Gaps between perceived health and actual CVD risk should be closed to optimize cardiovascular health of South Koreans. Koreans need to increase risk perception to a level commensurate with their actual risk. Healthcare providers should try to provide individuals at increased CVD risk with better information more frequently, especially those who have favorable perceptions of their health but smoke or have elevated cholesterol levels and bodyweight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is an important global health problem, particularly in the elderly population. Traditionally, the high prevalence of dyslipidemia in elderly people is considered a "natural condition." Notably, subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is one of the most important risk factors for dyslipidemia. Few studies have assessed whether SCH plays a role in the increase in age-related dyslipidemia. This study aimed to explore the association between SCH and lipid profiles in different age groups. METHODS This was a large-scale, population-based, case-control study. The population was derived from the REACTION study conducted across China. A total of 17,046 individuals (8827 cases and 8219 controls) aged 40 years or older were enrolled in the final analyses. The relationships between SCH and serum lipid parameters in each age group were evaluated after adjustment for thyroid hormones and common confounding factors. RESULTS In the entire population, thyrotropin (TSH), the key indicator of SCH, was positively associated with cholesterol parameters (total cholesterol [TC] and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]) through the sixth decade of life. After adjusting for common confounding factors and thyroid hormones, each 1 mIU/L increase in TSH was estimated to elevate the TC level by 0.0147 mmol/L and 0.0551 mmol/L, respectively, in individuals aged 40-49 years and 60-69 years. Similarly, with each 1 mIU/L increase in TSH, the LDL-C level tended to show gradually greater increases as age increased. In moderately old subjects (60-69 years), mild (TSH≤10 mIU/L) and significant (TSH>10 mIU/L) SCH increased the concentration of TC approximately 1.03- and 1.36-fold, and the concentration of LDL-C approximately 1.19- and 1.65-fold, respectively, when compared with younger subjects. CONCLUSIONS TSH exhibited a stronger effect on the TC and LDL-C level in moderately old subjects than in younger subjects. SCH might augment and worsen the effects of aging on serum lipid profiles.

Abstract
Background and Objectives To investigate age-specific and sex-specific distributions of blood cholesterol in the general Korean population. Subjects and Methods We analyzed data for 8284 men and 9246 women aged ≥10 years who participated in the fifth (2010-2012) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Age-specific means, medians, and selected percentiles were calculated for men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women. Results Median total cholesterol (TC) level increased with age across all age groups, from 147 to 196 mg/dL in males and from 159 to 210 mg/dL in females. Triglyceride (TG) levels increased with age in females; however, in males, TG levels rapidly increased during young adulthood, peaked at 50-54 years, and then decreased. High density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were higher in females than in males and decreased with increasing age in both males and females. Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels increased with age across all age groups, from 89 to 127 mg/dL in males and from 82 to 113 mg/dL in females. Lipoprotein-cholesterol fraction (TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, non-HDL-C) levels increased with age in females, but increased more rapidly in males during young adulthood and decreased after middle age. Conclusion Blood cholesterol levels and lipoprotein-cholesterol fractions present different distributions by age, sex, and menopausal status.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study aimed to estimate the relationship between various lipid abnormalities and albuminuria in Korean prediabetic adults. Data obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2011-2012 were analyzed. The study consisted of 4,811 subjects in the normal glucose group and 3,872 in the prediabetic group. Prediabetes was defined by the fasting plasma glucose or hemoglobin A1c level. Albuminuria was defined as a urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥30 mg/g. Various parameters of dyslipidemia were assessed. No differences were observed in the prevalence of lipid abnormalities in prediabetic men with different values of UACR. Prediabetic women with increased urinary albumin excretion showed a significantly higher prevalence of lipid abnormalities. The proportion of mixed dyslipidemia was significantly higher in prediabetic women with albuminuria. Higher levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), and TC to HDL-C ratio, TG to HDL-C ratio, and LDL-C to HDL-C ratio were significantly associated with increased risk of albuminuria in prediabetic women. CONCLUSIONS Several lipid abnormalities were significantly associated with the increased risk of albuminuria in prediabetic women. Hence, screening for lipid abnormalities may be helpful for identification of risk for albuminuria in prediabetic subjects.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate serum lipid profiles and glycemic control in adolescents and young adults with type 1diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 29 Korean young adults and adolescents with T1DM. The median age was 17 years (range, 10-25 years) and 18 (62.1%) were female. We compared the lipid profiles of patients with dyslipidemia and those without dyslipidemia. Correlations between glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and lipid profiles (total cholesterol [TC], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], and triglyceride [TG]) were determined by linear regression analysis. RESULTS Of the 29 patients with T1DM, 11 (37.9%) were classified as having dyslipidemia due to the following lipid abnormality: TC≥200 mg/dL in 8 patients, LDL-C≥130 mg/dL in 4 patients, TG≥150 mg/dL in 2 patients, and HDL-C≤35 mg/dL in 2 patients. Compared to patients without dyslipidemia, patients with dyslipidemia were more likely to have higher values of HbA1c (median, 10.6%; range, 7.5%-12.3% vs. median, 8.0%; range, 6.6%-10.0%; P=0.002) and a higher body mass index z score (median, 0.7; range, -0.57 to 2.6 vs. median, -0.4; range, -2.5 to 2.2; P=0.02). HbA1c levels were positively correlated with TC (P=0.03, R (2)=0.156) and TG (P=0.005, R (2)=0.261). CONCLUSION A substantial proportion of adolescents and young adults with T1DM had dyslipidemia. We found a correlation between poor glycemic control and poor lipid profiles in those patients.

Abstract
Abnormal lipid levels are important etiological factors associated with the development of atherosclerosis and with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Lipid levels are also influenced by lifestyle and behavioral factors, which suggests that personality traits might be related to abnormal lipid profiles. Studies on personality traits and lipid levels are relatively scarce in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the association between lipid levels and personality traits in young Korean women. A total of 1,701 young Korean women [mean age = 24.9±4.6 years (range 17-39)] who volunteered for personality trait evaluation were recruited for this study. Lipid levels, including total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride, were measured in all subjects after an overnight fast, and a low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level was calculated. The study population was divided into abnormal and normal lipid level groups according to the clinical criteria. Personality traits were measured using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory for the Five-Factor Model of personality. High neuroticism was associated with low HDL cholesterol levels. Low extraversion and openness were associated with high levels of triglyceride. At the facet level, the association between personality and lipid levels were generally consistent. Angry hostility, self-consciousness, vulnerability to stress, activity, and straightforwardness were associated with HDL cholesterol levels. Activity, positive emotion, aesthetics, actions, and deliberation were associated with triglyceride. When applying clinical criteria, conscientiousness was less likely to have abnormal total cholesterol levels. Our results showed that the women with the low HDL cholesterol levels are like to be more neurotic and the hyperglycemic women are prone to lower extraversion and openness in Korea. Understanding the associations between blood lipid levels and personality traits may have a beneficial effect for the managing of dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Recently, the incidence and prevalence of obesity and dyslipidemia are increasing. Dyslipidemia is associated with significant comorbidities and complications, and with cardiovascular risk factors (obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking). The main objectives of this article are that describe the prevalence of dyslipidemia in Korean children and adolescents and review the diagnosis and management of dyslipidemia in children and adolescents.

Abstract
More than 80% cardiovascular disease (CVD) is preventable despite the fact that it is currently the ultimate cause of disability in the world. Assessment of the nationwide prevalence of dyslipidemia as a major CVD risk factor is essential to efficiently conduct prevention programs. We extracted data according to the cut-off points of dyslipidemia used in each study. All published papers on this topic in Iranian and international journals with affiliation of "Iran" were reviewed using standard keywords up to September 2011. We included all available population-based studies and national surveys conducted in individuals aged ≥ 15 years. We excluded studies with < 300 individuals, non-population-based studies, or duplicated citations. We analyzed by random effect method due to between-study heterogeneity. The estimated prevalence and 95% confidence intervals in 29 eligible articles and one un-published data for hypercholesterolemia (≥200 mg/dl), hypertriglyceridemia (≥150 mg/dl), high levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol ([LDL-C] [≥ 130 mg/dl]) and low levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol ([HDL-C] <40 mg/dl in males, <50 mg/dl in females), in Iranian people were 41.6% (36.1-47.0), 46.0% (43.3-48.7), 35.5% (24.0-47.1) and 43.9% (33.4-54.4), respectively among both sexes and in both rural and urban areas. Hypercholesterolemia, high LDL-C and low HDL-C were more prevalent in women, whereas hypertriglyceridemia was more prevalent in men. All types of lipid component abnormalities were more prevalent in urban residents. Prevalence of dyslipidemia is considerable in Iran. It is necessary to enforce current measures of dyslipidemia control in the Iranian people to reduce CVD burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, aging has been shown to be associated with sarcopenic obesity (SO), of which decreased muscle mass and increased fat mass are features. Sarcopenia and obesity alone are known to be associated with abnormal lipid metabolism. However, it remains unclear whether SO has greater adverse effects on dyslipidemia than on sarcopenia or obesity alone. AIM We aimed to investigate the association between SO and dyslipidemia in elderly Koreans. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This study was based on data collected during the 2008-2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We included 1,466 men and 2,017 women aged 65 years and over. Sarcopenia was indicated in participants with height- or weight-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle that was 1 standard deviation below the sex-specific mean for the young reference group, and obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m(2). Dyslipidemia was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding factors, the SO group had a higher risk for dyslipidemia [odds ratio (OR) 2.82 (95 % confidence interval 1.76-4.51)] than the obese group [2.12 (1.11-4.07)] and sarcopenic group [1.46 (1.01-2.11)] (p < 0.001) only in men. Furthermore, the SO group in men had the highest OR for hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypo-high-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, hyper-low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, and a high ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol even after further adjustments. CONCLUSIONS In Korean elderly men, SO was associated with an increased risk for dyslipidemia compared with sarcopenia or obesity alone.

Abstract
Background The mortality rate from cardiovascular disease (CVD) among young adults has declined less than that in the older population, raising concerns about the increasing prevalence of obesity‐related conditions including hypercholesterolemia in the younger population. We investigated the age‐standardized mean levels of serum cholesterols and the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates of hyper‐low‐density lipoprotein (LDL)‐cholesterolemia based on age. Methods and Results Nationally representative samples of 19 489 subjects aged ≥20 years were analyzed from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2008–2010. Hyper‐LDL‐cholesterolemia was individually evaluated by the 2004 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. Age‐standardized mean levels of total cholesterol, high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol, LDL‐cholesterol, and triglycerides were 186.8, 48.0, 112.9, and 136.0 mg/dL, respectively. Age‐standardized prevalence of hyper‐LDL‐cholesterolemia was 23.2% (men, 25.5%; women, 21.8%). Among subjects with hyper‐LDL‐cholesterolemia, awareness and treatment rates were significantly lower in younger adults (<50 years) compared to older adults ≥50 years (awareness, 8.0% versus 21.5%; treatment, 5.1% versus 18.5%, all Ps<0.001), indicating significant discrepancies in awareness and treatment rates of hypercholesterolemia between younger and older adults. Among subjects aware of their hyper‐LDL‐cholesterolemia, younger adults were more likely to have controlled LDL‐cholesterol than the elderly (82.1% versus 67.5%, P<0.001). Conclusions Compared to the elderly, significant proportions of young and middle‐aged adults are unaware of their hypercholesterolemia and are not treated with proper lipid‐lowering medications. Early screening, education, and proper management should be stressed in national public healthcare policies to reduce the increasing burden of CVD in the younger population with undiagnosed hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate recent trends in the prevalence and parameters of dyslipidemia and rates of lipid-lowering medication use in Korean adults. Trends in lipid profiles in subjects with hypertension, diabetes or obesity were also studied. METHODS Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2005, 2008 and 2010 were used in this study. A total of 17 009 subjects participated in this study. RESULTS There was a declining trend in the prevalence of dyslipidemia and an increasing trend in the rates of use of lipid-lowering medication among Korean adults. In both men and women, the age-adjusted mean high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level linearly increased. There was a significantly decreasing trend in the age-adjusted mean triglycerides in women and age-adjusted mean lipid-related ratios in both sexes. The age-adjusted mean total cholesterol level showed a slightly increasing trend and the age-adjusted mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was not changed in both sexes. These patterns persisted among subjects not taking lipid-lowering medication. The favorable trends were also observed in subjects with hypertension, diabetes and obesity. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed favorable trends in the prevalence of dyslipidemia and in several lipid profiles among Korean adults.
