Abstract
This working paper reviews the research and development in genetic improvement and breeding strategies of Bonga, Menz, Afar and Horro sheep in Ethiopia. This review aims to provide structured information regarding the Ethiopian indigenous sheep breeds (Bonga, Afar, Menz, and Horro) breeding programs and its progress. Genetic diversity is an essential element for genetic improvement, preserving populations, evaluation and adapting to variable environmental situations. Sustainable breeding techniques and sensible use of indigenous breed have been developed as result of recent research approaches to the conservation of sheep genetic resources. However, there is still growing interest of the government and of farmers in different breeding program to improve indigenous sheep breeds. There is no comprehensive study showing the performance of indigenous sheep breeds (Bonga, Afar, Menz, and Horro) genetic improvement under different breeding program and its progress, both biological and economic, to substantiate the argument on the benefit of different breeding programs for smallholders farmers. Programs for the sheep breeds Menz, Afar, Horro, and Bonga have now been developed at the community level. The idea behind the nucleus breeding program is to develop elite breeding animals by gathering the finest male and female breeding participants from the population in one central location. The first stage in creating a breeding program is defining the breeding goals. Planning breeding programs requires a thorough grasp of the farmers' (beneficiaries') breeding goals and production objectives. Therefore, this review makes it evident that numerous instruments and techniques, including choice experiments, participatory rural assessment procedures, and rating animals from flocks, have been used to define and ascertain the breeding aim of Afar, Horro, Bonga and Menz sheep breeds in Ethiopia.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was the validation of the already reported Bos taurus SNPs in the Sahiwal breed. A total of nine SNPs of the casein gene were studied. Out of nine, seven Bos taurus SNPs of casein protein genes were found to be significantly associated with milk productivity traits. The genomic DNA was extracted from the mammary alveolar endothelial cells of a flock of 80 purebred Sahiwal lactating dams available at Khizrabad Farm near Sargodha. New allele-specific primers were designed from the NCBI annotated sequence database of Bos taurus to obtain 100 nt-long PCR products. Each dam was tested separately for all the SNPs investigated. Animals with genotype GG for the SNPs rs43703010, rs10500451, and 110323127, respectively, exhibited high milk yield. Similarly, animals with genotype AA for the SNPs rs11079521, rs43703016, and rs43703017 showed high milk yield consistently. For the SNP rs43703015, animals with genotype CC showed high milk productivity. These above-mentioned SNPs have previously been reported to significantly up-regulate casein protein contents in Bos taurus. Our results indicated SNPs that significantly affect the milk protein contents may also significantly increase per capita milk yield. These finding suggest that the above-mentioned reported SNPs can also be used as genetic markers of milk productivity in Sahiwal cattle.

Abstract
In wild animal populations, there is a differentiation between populations due to natural selection. The direction and pressure of natural selection in the wild sheep are different in the various geographic areas. Linkage disequilibrium studies showed that regions of the genome in whole wild sheep are under natural selection and that natural selection can affect immune or reproductive or metabolic traits. The study aimed to identify genomic regions under natural selection in wild sheep. For this purpose, the genetic information of 24 European wild sheep and 24 Sardinian wild sheep was used. The genotypes were determined using Illumina 50 K SNPChip arrays based on Oar_4.0 version of the sheep genome. After quality control steps, finally, 31,560 SNP markers were analyzed. The value of LD was calculated by calculating the r2 statistic between all pairs of locations through PLINK software. To identify signs of selection based on linkage disequilibrium methods, an extended haplotype homozygosity test of XP-EHH crossing population and iHS intrapopulation was used. The results of iHS studies showed that in European and Sardinian wild sheep, the highest iHS coefficient under natural selection was observed on 3 and 2 chromosome numbers, respectively. Also, the results of XP-EHH studies showed that the largest XP-EHH coefficients under natural selection in European wild sheep compared to Sardinian and vice versa in Sardinian wild sheep compared to European wild sheep were observed on 3 and 16 chromosome numbers, respectively. In addition, the results of gene cycle studies showed that COPB1, SEC24D, ZDHHC17, BBS4, RFX3, SLC26A8, CAMK2D, GRIA1, GRM1, GRID2, PPP2R1A, CPEB4, PLEKHA5 and KIF13A, VPS39, VPS53, DTNBP1, DYNC1I1, FAM91A genes are under natural selection in Sardinian and European wild sheeps, respectively. The direction and selection pressure of natural selection in the two breeds of wild sheep is different due to different geographic conditions.

Abstract
Our study aimed to explore the genetic variation in the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene and establish its association with somatic cell score (SCS) and milk production traits in four Indian camel breeds namely Bikaneri, Kachchhi, Jaisalmeri and Mewari. TLR4 gene fragment of 573 bp spanning 5' UTR, exon-1 and partial intron-1 region was amplified and genotyped using the PCR-sequence based typing method. Only one SNP located at position C472T was identified. Genotyping revealed two alleles (C and T) and three genotypes: CC, CT and TT. The genotype frequencies for CC, CT and TT were 0.116, 0.326 and 0.558 and allele frequencies for C and T alleles were 0.279 and 0.721, respectively. Association study inferred that the effect of genotype on SCS, lactation yield (LY) and peak yield (PY) was non-significant however heterozygote (CT) genotypes recorded lower SCS and higher LY and PY. It can be concluded that the TLR4 gene possesses limited genetic variation, depicting polymorphism at a single locus in Indian camel breeds with a predominance of the TT genotype. The association study indicated that heterozygote animals possess better udder health and production performance, the statistical significance of which needs to be established using a large data set.

Abstract
Cockfighting is popular worldwide, dating back to 2,800 BC. Primarily, 5 modern Chinese gamecock breeds exist, located in the northeast (Luxi and Henan), west (Turpan), south (Xishuangbanna), and southeast (Zhangzhou) of China. However, whether Chinese gamecocks were derived from a single origin or multiple origins remains controversial. Therefore, this study used next-generation resequencing data to elucidate the origin of Chinese gamecocks by constructing genome-wide and SRY-box transcription factor 5 (SOX5) gene phylogenetic trees. Data from 161 chickens from 27 breeds, including 9 gamecock breeds, were included. Before constructing the SOX5 gene tree, we validated that the pea-comb phenotype mutation in all gamecock breeds was attributed to copy number variation in intron 1 of the SOX5 gene, as previously reported. The specific region was chr1: 65,838,000 to 65,846,000. The phylogenetic tree results suggested that Zhangzhou and Xishuangbanna gamecocks have a monophyletic origin, while Luxi, Henan, and Turpan gamecocks have a common ancestor. Our study provides genome-wide evidence that Chinese gamecocks have multiple origins and advances the understanding of the genetic mechanisms of the pea-comb characteristic.

Abstract
In this study, a single nucleotide polymorphism of HTR4 (hydroxytryptamine receptor 4) was detected using DNA sequencing and KASPar (Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR) technique with the aim of analyzing its effect on growth traits in 1102 sheep. A synonymous mutation g.101220 C > T located on the fifth intron of the ovis HTR4 gene was detected, and association analysis showed that this mutation was significantly associated with growth traits in sheep (p <.05), with TT genotypes having significantly lower body weight, height, length and chest circumference than TC and CC genotypes. It showed that the polymorphism of this locus was significantly associated with growth traits in sheep. In addition, qRT-PCR results showed that HTR4 was expressed in different tissues of sheep. It is highly expressed in the liver, spleen and duodenum. As important metabolic, immune and digestive absorption organs in animals, the above tissues can regulate the excitability of intestinal smooth muscle by participating in the body metabolism and nutrient metabolism of sheep, so that sheep can show better growth characteristics. In conclusion, the polymorphic locus identified in HTR4 gene can be used as candidate molecular marker in sheep breeding.

Abstract
Knockout of the MSTN gene is linked to the enlarged tongue, and it causes suckling difficulty in animals. The suckling difficulty has a severe effect on animal mortality. Thus, special care was required to ensure their survivability. Here, it is critical to promptly ascertain the genotype of all pigs after birth. The main objective of the present study was to develop the restriction enzyme-mediated PCR-RFLP assay for MSTN mutant pig genotyping. To accomplish this, conserved oligonucleotide primer and restriction site were deduced according to the mutated sequence of the MSTN mutant pigs. PCR amplification yielded a 176 bp band for all homozygous MSTN mutant (MSTN-/-), heterozygous MSTN mutant (MSTN+/-) and wild-type (WT) pigs. However, MSTN+/- samples produced two fragments with 176 and 87 bp, and WT samples produced one fragment with 87 bp after being digested by BstNI. MSTN-/- samples were not digested by BstNI and yielded a 176 bp band. Thus, we were able to determine the genotype of all pigs using BstNI restriction enzyme-mediated PCR-RFLP method. Overall, the present study reported a simple and fast PCR-RFLP genotyping method for MSTN mutant pig breeding. The present study may contribute to the establishment of commercial breeding systems and the production of double muscle pigs.

Abstract
Lipid and energy metabolism are major constituents of mammal growth and thus fattening performance of cattle. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of polymorphisms in lipid and energy metabolism-related genes including oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1 (OLR1), lactoferrin (LTF), stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD), beta-lactoglobulin (LGB), thyroglobulin (TG), annexin A9 (ANXA9), myogenic factor 5 (MYF5), protein kinase AMP-activated non-catalytic subunit gamma 3 (PRKAG3), and pituitary-specific transcriptional factor 1 (PIT1), on fattening performance in Simmental cattle. A total of 72 purebred Simmental bulls with a similar initial age and weight were fattened on the same farm for 10 months. Association analysis was performed using linear mixed models. The OLR1 marker was significantly associated with the final weight (FW), hot carcass weight (HCW), chilled carcass weight (CCW), dressing percentage (DP), and total weight gain (TWG). SCD affected the FW, TWG, and average daily live weight gain (ADWG). The present results clearly demonstrated the significant impact of the TG marker on fattening performance. It was highly significantly associated with the FW, HCW, CCW, and TWG. The SCD × TG and the OLR1 × TG interactions had remarkable effects on the traits analyzed. The GACC and CCCC haplotypes of the SCD × TG and OLR1 × TG, respectively, were found to be powerful markers for fattening performance in Simmentals. Novel associations in this study may be useful for further genetic evaluations to improve beef cattle breeding.

Abstract
Feed efficiency makes up a large part of sheep production, which also has a crucial impact on the economic benefits of producers. This study explores the polymorphism of Adenylyl cyclase 8 gene associated with feed efficiency and detects the expression characteristics of ADCY8 in ten tissues of Hu sheep. The polymorphism of ADCY8 was recognized by using PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing, KASPar technology was used for genotyping subsequently, and the relationship between SNP and RFI is also studied. The results indicated that an intronic mutation g.24799148 C > T (rs 423395741) was identified in ADCY8, and association analysis showed that the SNP g.24799148 C > T (rs 423395741) was significantly associated with RFI at 100-120, 100-140, 100-160, and 100-180 days (p < 0.05). The quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) result showed that ADCY8 was expressed in ten tissues, and the expression of ADCY8 gene in rumen tissue was significantly higher than in the other tested tissues. Therefore, these results indicated that the ADCY8 mutation locus may be used as a candidate molecular marker for evaluating the feed efficiency of Hu sheep.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the polymorphism in 7th exon of beta-casein gene (CSN2) gene in seven domestic (Kosali, Tharparkar, Gangatiri, Sahiwal, Gir, Khariar, Motu) and two exotic cattle breeds (Jersey and Holstein-Friesian). Genomic DNA was extracted from 1000 milk samples, and the C > A polymorphism in CSN2 was determined using the tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction method. In all Indigenous cattle breeds, the mean frequency of A1A2 and A2A2 genotypes was 0.19 and 0.80, respectively. The A1A1 genotype was absent in all seven domestic cattle breeds. The frequency of the A2A2 genotype was highest in the Gir breed (0.93). However, the Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Motu breeds also had a higher frequency of A2A2 genotype compared to other breeds. In contrast, Gangatiri breed of India showed lowest frequency of A2A2 genotype. The mean A1 and A2 allele frequency was 0.09 and 0.91, respectively. In exotic breeds, the mean frequencies of the A1A1, A1A2, and A2A2 genotypes were 0.42, 0.55, and 0.03, respectively. Similarly, the mean A1 and A2 allele frequency was 0.69 and 0.31, respectively. This study suggests the high potential of Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Motu cattle for A2 milk production since they carry a favorable A2 genotype.

Abstract
The current study aimed to identify the SEPW1 and JAML genes in lamb as candidate genes related to lamb odor and flavor. The polymorphism study showed that the SEPW1 gene was polymorphic at the BanI restriction site with three genotypes (AA, AG, and GG), whereas the JAML gene was monomorphic at HhaI with genotype (GG). The association of SEPW1 between genotype and lamb odor and flavor (BCFAs and skatole) was analyzed using GLM (General Linear Model). MNA (4-methylnonanoic) was significantly associated (p < 0.05) with lamb odor and flavor. AA genotype has a lower level of MNA than AG and GG, while MOA (4-methyloctanoic), EOA(4-ethyloctanoic), MI (3-methylindole) and MP (3-methylphenol) was not significantly associated with lamb odor and flavor (p > 0.05). Furthermore, to analyze the mRNA expression of SEPW1 in liver tissues, the lambs were divided into three groups based on the genotypes AA, AG, and GG, however, mRNA expression was not differentially expressed between AA, AG, and GG (p > 0.05). These results will enhance the understanding of the functions of SEPW1 gene relation to odor and flavor traits and will shed light on the polymorphism of SEPW1 gene in lamb as a candidate gene for reducing MNA in lamb.

Abstract
This study was to investigate the correlations of myogenic differentiation 1 (MYOD1) gene polymorphisms with carcass traits and its expression with breast muscle development in pigeons. Four SNPs were found in the pigeon MYOD1 gene. Correlation analysis showed that individuals with AA genotype at both SNPs g.2967A > G (p < .01) and g.3044G > A (p < .05) have significantly higher live weight (LW), carcass weight (CW), semi-eviscerated weight (SEW), eviscerated weight (EW) and breast muscle weight (BMW). Moreover, the two SNPs also had the same significant effects on MYOD1 mRNA expression levels in breast muscle of pigeons, ie, the AA genotype showed higher MYOD1 mRNA expression levels. The diameter and cross-section area of muscle fibers continuously increased from 0w to 4w (p < .05), accompanied with the increasing expression of MYOD1 gene, while the density decreased (p < .05) dramatically from 0w to 1w and continuously fell over in the next few weeks (p > .05). What's more, the expression level of MYOD1 gene was positively correlated with a diameter (r = 0.937, p < .05) and cross-sectional area (r = 0.956, p < .01) of myofiber, and negatively correlated with density (r = -0.769, p < .01). The results showed that individuals with AA genotype at both SNPs g.2967A > G and g.3044G > A have showed higher carcass traits (LW, CW, SEW, EW, and BMW) and higher MYOD1 mRNA expression level in breast muscle than AB and BB genotypes. Moreover, the expression level of MYOD1 gene was closely correlated with muscle characteristic traits, indicating variants of MYOD1 gene was closely related to muscle development and could be a potential candidate gene in marker-assisted selection of pigeons.

Abstract
Equines' ability in racing and riding as well as gaitedness have influenced the human civilization. Aim of this study was to identify and characterize the novel polymorphisms or SNPs in DMRT3 gene in Indian horse and donkey breeds. In this study, the DMRT3 gene was sequenced and characterized in 72 Indian horses' and 33 Indian donkeys' samples. One SNP (A > C) at 878 was found in studied horses while identical SNPs (A > C) at two different nucleotide positions i.e., 878 and 942 in DMRT3 gene (chromosome 23) were observed in studied Indian donkey breeds. Horses and donkeys both have a non-synonymous mutation (A > C) at nucleotide 878 (codon 61) that converts a Stop codon (TAG > TCG) to coding codon Serine, whereas donkeys have a synonymous mutation at nucleotide 942 (codon 82) that converts Serine (TCA > TCC) into Serine. A phylogenetic tree indicated that the DMRT3 gene was equally distributed among the equine breeds. Most of the donkey breeds have been shown high levels of genetic diversity while horse breeds and Halari donkey showed the least genetic diversity. Mutation in DMRT3 has a major impact on gaitedness in horses and is presented at a high frequency in gaited breeds and in horses breed for harness racing.

Abstract
Backfat trait is an important economic trait and highly heritable, but difficult to evaluate. Thus, it is of great significance to explore optimal backfat thickness of pigs by using marker-assisted selection (MAS) to speed up its breeding process and improve economic efficiency. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between genetic variations (e.g., SSRs) and backfat of Qinghai Bamei pigs using MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Herein, five alternative SSR loci (namely V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5) were selected for subsequent detection. The results suggested that 3 (141-, 143- and 145-), 3 (128-, 130- and 132-), 2 (160- and 162-), 2 (136- and 139-) and 3 (170-, 184- and 192-) alleles of V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5 were found, respectively. Subsequent analysis showed that there was linkage equilibrium among five SSRs and Hap19 (13.1%) (141-/132-/160-/139-/192-) had the highest haplotype frequency. Among these five SSR loci, V1, V2 and V3 loci were significantly associated to the backfat of Qinghai Bamei sows. These findings enriched the study of SSRs in Qinghai Bamei pigs, and (AC)n (Chr15:85485851-85485995), (AC)n (Chr10:52724583-52724713) and (TG)n (Chr4:90732644-90732802) could be utilized as the candidate locus for MAS in pig industry.HIGHLIGHTSFive novel SSR loci was identified in pigs through MALDI-TOF MS.V1, V2 and V3 loci was were significantly associated to the backfat of pigs.

Abstract
The 32 bp deletion in the chemokine receptor (C-C motif) 5 gene (CCR5Δ32) is a natural loss of function polymorphism that prevents the protein from locating on the cell surface. This genetic variation acts as a double-edge sword in the pathogenesis/defense mechanism of different health conditions, such as viral infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers. Here, we evaluated the prevalence of the CCR5Δ32 polymorphism in the Turkmen population of Golestan province, northeast of Iran. Blood samples were collected from 400 randomly selected Turkmen populations (199 women and 201 men), and genomic DNA was extracted. Characterization of CCR5Δ32 genotypes was performed by PCR using primers flanking the 32-nucleotide deletion in the CCR5 gene. The amplified DNA fragments were visualized on 2% agarose gel electrophoresis with cybergreen staining under UV light. All individuals were of Turkmen ethnicity and lived in the Golestan province, northeast of Iran. The mean age of all participants was 35.46 years, with a 20-45 year range. All the studied subjects were healthy without any severe conditions such as autoimmune disease and viral infections. All individuals had no history of HIV infection. The PCR product visualization showed that all the samples are at the 330 bp size, which means the CCR5Δ32 allele was utterly absent from the study population. The presence of the CCR5Δ32 allele among Turkmens may be attributed to the admixture with European descent people. We conclude that the CCR5Δ32 polymorphism may be absent in the Iranian Turkmen population, and further studies with a large population are needed.

Abstract
The main purpose of the existing experiment was to assess the allelic and genotypic polymorphisms of the Growth hormone (GH) gene and its correlation with growth indices, efficiency of consumed feed, some body indices and carcass traits of the Egyptian Awassi sheep. Forty Egyptian Awassi male lambs were selected for their growing indices (post-weaning daily gain, marketing weight, and weaning weight), feed efficiency (consumed feed and of consumed feed), body conformational indicators (skeletal muscle index, relative body index, body mass index, and body index), and carcass features (dressing %, hot carcass weight, fore-legs %, neck %, loin %, ribs %, abdominal fat %, Tail % and hind-legs %). The polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) tool was applied to detect the genotypic and allelic GH gene polymorphisms properties. The PCR-RFLP analysis identified three main genotypes (AA, AB and BB) and two main alleles (A and B). The GH genotype (AA or AB) exhibited moderate significant influence (P < 0.05) on marketing weight, Loin% and Tail%. Also, genotype (AB or BB) of expressed GH gene significantly (P < 0.01) influence on consumed feed, post-weaning daily gain, neck% and body mass index, whereas, it had no influence on the phenotypic values of the other characteristics investigated. The presence of the A allele in the genotype was markedly associated (P < 0.01) with consumed feed, body mass index and post-weaning daily growth; conversely, the presence of the B allele in the genotype was significantly related (P < 0.05) with marketing weight, loin %, and tail %. While, GH gene expression was revealed to be highly significant (P < 0.01) in relation to post-weaning daily growth, feed intake, and neck %. According to the findings, determining the associations between GH gene variation and growth, efficiency of consumed feed, body measurements, and carcass features of Egyptian Awassi sheep and applying marker assisted selection with the GH gene to improve these traits is warranted and will be of significant economic value to sheep production.

Abstract
The interindividual heterogeneity in response to the antihypertensive effect of irbesartan has received considerable attention because of gene polymorphism. In this study, we investigated the new combinational influences of AGTR1 and ABCB1 gene polymorphism on the therapeutic effect of irbesartan among Chinese hypertensive patients. A total of 353 samples including 168 normal people and 185 hypertensive patients were adopted, and genotypes comprise ABCB1 (CC, CT, and TT) and AGTR1 (AA and AC) in this study. The results of multiple linear regression models showed that no statistically significant differences were observed in blood pressure change following irbesartan administration in each genotype from either ABCB1 (CC, CT, and TT) or AGTR1 (AA and AC). However, spline smoothing analysis demonstrated that the blood pressure therapeutic responses of irbesartan presented a noticeable difference among different ABCB1 genotypes when irbesartan doses reached over 300 ng/mL. Eventually, we assumed that the different drug responses of irbesartan among various AGTR1 genotypes were due to the diversity of the irbesartan-conjugated protein, which is responsible for crossing-coupled intracellular G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).

The Influence of Bacteria Causing Subclinical Mastitis on the Structure of the Cow’s Milk Microbiome. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27061829. Abstract
Mastitis is the most expensive disease of dairy cattle across the world and is the main reason for the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry. The aim of this study was to analyze the microbiome of raw milk obtained from a semi-subsistence farm located in the Kuyavian–Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. Milk from healthy cows and from cows with subclinical mastitis was analyzed. The following pathogenic bacteria were found in milk from individuals with subclinical mastitis: Escherichia coli or Streptococcus agalactiae. The composition of drinking milk was assessed on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing using the Ion Torrent platform. Based on the conducted research, significant changes in the composition of the milk microbiome were found depending on the physiological state of the cows. The microbiome of milk from healthy cows differed significantly from the milk from cows with subclinical mastitis. Two phyla dominated in the milk from healthy cows: Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, in equal amounts. On the contrary, in the milk from cows with diagnosed subclinical mastitis, one of the types dominated: either Firmicutes or Proteobacteria, and was largely predominant. Moreover, the milk microflora from the ill animals were characterized by lower values of the determined biodiversity indicators than the milk from healthy cows. The presence of pathogenic bacteria in the milk resulted in a significant reduction in the share of lactic acid bacteria in the structure of the population of microorganisms, which are of great importance in the production technology of regional products.

Abstract
Background Copy number variation (CNV) has become an essential part of genetic structural variation. Coiled‐coil domain containing 39 (CCDC39) is a gene that related to the growth and development of organs and tissues. It is identified that it has a CNV region by animal genome resequencing. Objective In this study, we detected the phenotypic traits and different distributions of CCDC39 gene copy numbers in five Chinese cattle breeds (Qinchuan (QC) cattle, Yunling (YL) cattle, Xianan (XN) cattle, Pinan (PN) cattle and Jiaxian (JX) cattle). Methods Five hundred and six cattle were randomly selected for CNV distribution detection. Blood samples were taken and genomic DNA was extracted. Different tissues were obtained from adult (n = 3) XN cattle, including heart, liver, kidney, skeletal muscle and lung. The genome qPCR experiment was performed with SYBR Green in triplicate. CDNA qPCR was used to detect the expression level of CCDC39 in different tissues and varieties. Using SPSS v20.0 software, the relationship between CCDC39 CNV and the growth traits of PN, XN, QC, NY and YL cattle breeds was analyzed by one‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results The results showed that the expression of CCDC39 in lung was higher than that in other tissues. The expression in liver and kidney was similar, but the expression in heart and muscle was less. It can be seen that the duplication type of QC cattle CCDC39 CNV is higher than the deletion or normal in the height at hip cross. The normal type of PN cattle in body length and hip width was better than duplication and deletion (p < 0.05). In XN cattle, the deletion type of CNV had superior growth characteristics in heart girth and cannon bone circumference compared with the duplication type and the normal type (p < 0.05). Conclusion The study revealed a significant association between CNV of CCDC39 gene and growth traits in different Chinese cattle breeds.

Abstract
The swine mulefoot (SM) is a rare condition characterized by a non-cloven hoof due to the partial or total fusion of the phalanges. No comprehensive study has been conducted to identify associated markers with this phenotype until now. We aimed to characterize the association between SNP and the mulefoot phenotype using a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS). An experimental population was produced using a half-sib mating where the male had the mulefoot phenotype and the females (n = 6) had cloven hoofs. The cross resulted in 27 (47%) animals with the mulefoot characteristic and 30 (53%) normal animals, indicating the possible dominant gene action. Animals were further genotyped using the Illumina PorcineSNP50k BeadChip, and SNPs were tested for associations. Twenty-nine SNPs located on the SSC15, SSC4, and SSCX were associated with the mulefoot phenotype (p-value <5 × 10-5). Six markers were found in the intronic regions of VWC2L, CATIP, PDK3, PCYT1B, and POLA1 genes. The marker rs81277626, on SSC15:116,886,110 bp, is located in the Von Willebrand Factor C Domain (VWC2L), a possible functional candidate gene. The VWC2L is part of a biological process involved with the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway, previously associated with syndactyly in other species. In conclusion, the identified markers suggest the involvement of the VWC2L gene in the SM phenotype in this population.

Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to find single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the myostatin (MSTN) and the beta-3 adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) genes associated with growth and ultrasound carcass traits in Kajli sheep. The five growth traits were birth weight (BWT-EBV), 120-day weight (120DWT-EBV), 180-day weight (180DWT-EBV), 270-day weight (270DWT-EBV), and 365-day weight (365DWT-EBV). The three ultrasound carcass traits were width (WLD) and depth of longissimus dorsi (DLD) and back fat thickness (BFT). The analysis of the MSTN sequence revealed one non-synonymous substitution (c.197T > A) in exon 1, one single nucleotide substitution (c.373 + 18G > T) in intron 1, and one synonymous substitution (c.861T > A) in exon 3. However, there were four single nucleotide synonymous substitutions (c.130C > T, c.294C > G, c.579G > T, and c.654C > G) in exon 1 of the ADRB3 gene. All the SNPs in the MSTN gene, except for c.373 + 18G > T, were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE). Conversely, none of the SNPs found in ADRB3 were in HWE. Two of the MSTN SNPs (c.197T > A and c.373 + 18G > T) had significant associations with all evaluated growth and ultrasound carcass traits. The SNPs c.130C > T and c.294C > G in ADRB3 were significantly associated with 180DWT-EBV. Collectively, these findings indicate that several SNPs in the studied genes were significantly related to growth and carcass traits in Kajli sheep.

Abstract
MHC gene is highly polymorphic and plays central molecule in immune system in recognition of pathogens and parasites. The present study examined the variability of MHC class II DRB exon 2 gene using microsatellite analysis, and its association with Haemonchus contortus infestation in Salem Black goat population. Animals were naturally exposed to mixed infestation of endoparasites, predominantly Haemonchus contortus. Pooled fecal coproculture and larval identification showed predominant presence of haemonchus (L3) larva. Fecal egg count (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV) were used as indicator traits. All the three studied loci, OarCP73, DYA, and ODRB1.2, were polymorphic having three, four, and four alleles and four, eight, and nine genotypes, respectively. The loci showed low to moderate values of polymorphic information content. The mean fecal egg count estimates were 477.12 ± 34.14 eggs per gram of feces and the mean PCV values were within the normal range; however, they showed negative correlation with FEC values. All the three microsatellite loci and the effect of genotypes on indicator traits were found to be statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05). The present study will be helpful in selection and breeding of goats for Haemonchosis resistance.

Abstract
ADP-dependent glucokinase (ADPGK) plays an important role instead of hexokinase in regulating energy metabolism via the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas Pathway. And energy provided via glycolysis promotes testis development and spermatogenesis. In this study, 466 Hu sheep were screened for mutations in the ADPGK gene to examine the association of the ADPGK gene polymorphisms with the testis traits and spermatogenesis. The NC_056060.1: g.31295 C > T SNP was found in the 3'-UTR region, resulting in two genotypes CC and TC type with genotypic frequencies of 0.66 and 0.34, respectively. This mutation was significantly associated with testis weight, testis long circumference, testis short girth, epididymis weight, and sperm concentration (p < 0.05). Moreover, TC genotype individuals had an increased tendency in the expression of the ADPGK gene and had significant reproductive performance advantages compared with CC genotype individuals in the study. And compared with the small testes (<50 g), the ADPGK gene expression of big testes (>160 g) increased significantly. This indicates an association between the ADPGK gene and reproductive organ parameters and sperm count in selected Hu sheep breed, and this SNP may serve as an effective DNA molecular marker for marker-assisted selection in Hu sheep breeding programs.

The aim of the present study was to detect the FOXP3 gene polymorphisms in Barki sheep at a variable region covering exon 13, intron 13 and the coding sequence in exon 14 and to test the association of these polymorphisms with growth traits. 122 Barki lambs were phenotyped for various growth traits, viz., birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), pre-weaning daily gain in weight (ADG1), post-weaning daily gain in weight (ADG2) and marketing bodyweight (MW). The polymerase chain reaction - single-strand conformational polymorphisms (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing methods were used to identify the genetic variants in the FOXP3 gene. The associations between the variation in FOXP3 gene and growth traits were tested using a general linear model. Two variants (F1 and F2 with gene frequencies of 0.64 and 0.36, respectively), and three genotypes (F1F1, F1F2 and F2F2 with frequencies of 0.37, 0.53 and 0.10, respectively) were detected. The association of FOXP3 genotype was significant (p < 0.05) with ADG2 and MW. It is concluded that FOXP3 genotype might be helpful for sheep breeders to produce fast-growing lambs. However, further studies are needed in a large population to confirm the association we found.

Abstract
For revealing molecular markers related to the traits of multiple lumbar vertebrae in sheep, we analyze the relationship between NR6A1 gene polymorphism and lumbar vertebrae number traits in Xinjiang Kazakh sheep. Lumbar muscle tissues were collected from 6-lumbar spine (L6) Kazak sheep and 7-lumbar spine (L7) Kazak sheep and the intron-8 of NR6A1 gene was amplified by PCR. The SNP locus was detected by the PCR-SSCP method. One-Way ANOVA and an Independent Chi-square Test is adopted to analyze the genotype association with lumbar spine number variation. There were two SNP loci in the intron-8 of the NR6A1 gene: IVS8-188 and IVS8-281. One-Way ANOVA and Independent Chi-square Test indicated a significant association between IVS8-281 and lumbar spine number. The SNP locus of NR6A1 gene intron 8 (IVS8-281G > A) could play a certain role in the variation of lumbar spine number in Xinjiang Kazakh sheep and demonstrates potential to accelerate the sheep breeding of selection process.

Abstract
Background&Aims:Patients with thalassemia have lifelong need for blood transfusion, makes them more risky to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Iron overload and chronic HCV are considered risk factors for patients with thalassemia to develop liver insults. The aim of the present study is to investigate the safety and efficacy of sofosbuvir/ledipasvir in treatment of chronic HCV infection in Egyptian adult patients with β- thalassemia major. METHODS Aretrospective study included 53 patients with β-thalassemia major with chronic HCV treated with sofosbuvir (400 mg) and ledipasvir (90 mg) as a single pill fixed dose combination once daily for 12 weeks. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed by sustained virologic response (SVR) at 12 weeks after the end of treatment. RESULTS SVR was achieved in 96.23% of patients. 47.17% of patients had minor side effects. There was a significant reduction in ALT, AST, and serum ferritin 12 weeks post-therapy. There was insignificant change in hemoglobin level, or blood transfusion requirement 12 weeks post-therapy. There was no change in iron chelators doses throughout the study period. CONCLUSION Sofosbuvir/ledipasvir regimen seems to be safe and highly effective in treatment of chronic HCV in patients with β-thalassemia major.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Sudanese desert sheep encompass different sheep breeds named according to the different Sudanese tribes that rear them such as the Dubasi, Shugor, and Watish sheep. The objectives of this study were to screen for G1 point mutation in the polymorphic growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) gene, investigate its association with litter size, and construct the phylogeny of the different tribal breeds that belong to the Sudanese Desert sheep tribal types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood of three tribal Desert sheep breeds (Dubasi, Watish, and Shugor) using the guanidine chloride method. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism with HhaI restriction enzyme and sequencing techniques was used for genotyping the GDF9 locus for possible mutations associated with litter size in the three desert sheep tribal types. RESULTS G1 mutation in GDF9 caused the replacement of Arginine by Histidine at residue 87. The wild type allele (A) had the highest frequency, whereas the mutant type allele (a) had the lowest in all the sequenced subtypes. The genotype frequencies of the wild type ewes (AA) were higher than the heterozygous (Aa) and the mutant type (aa) frequencies in the three studied desert sheep types. No significant differences were found in the allele frequency between the three tribal types. Litter size was significantly influenced by the genotypes of GDF9 gene, parities, and subtypes (p≤0.01, 0.01, and 0.05, respectively). In the Watish sheep type, heterozygous sheep in their second parity recorded the highest litter size. Sequence alignment of GDF9 gene samples with the database entry indicated that all three tribal types were similar and identical to the reference sequence. The phylogenetic tree revealed that Shugor is the common ancestor of the studied types and Watish is more closely related to Shugor than Dubasi. This result mi ght partly explain the lower reproductive performance of Dubasi compared to Watish and Shugor. CONCLUSION The presence of one copy of GDF9 gene increased litter size in the studied Sudanese Desert sheep. This locus may be used as a biomarker for litter size improvement through genotypic selection and allele or gene introgression.

Abstract
Bovine leukemia is a chronic, progressive, contagious tumor disease characterized by malignant lymphoid cell hyperplasia and systemic lymphadenopathy, and is caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV). The disease affects almost all countries and regions where livestock are raised, and may even be a potential zoonotic disease. Monitoring and early prevention of bovine leukemia is very important. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis, the first of its type in the country, to estimate the prevalence of bovine leukemia in 1983-2019 in China. We included a total of 35 publications reported in 1983-2019 from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Chinese Web of Knowledge (CNKI), VIP Chinese, and Wan Fang databases. In those articles, a total of 34,954 cattle had been tested, of which 4701 were positive for BLV infection. The estimated pooled BLV prevalence was 10.0% (4701/34,954). Subgroup analysis showed that there were significant differences for sampling years, detection methods, and age. BLV prevalence was highest in the following subgroups: sampled before 1985 (38.5%, 437/1134), age 3-5 years (22.5%, 231/1044), and detected by PCR (17.9%, 1228/5100). Regarding geographic factors, there were significant differences in the latitude and elevation subgroups. BLV prevalence was lowest in the subgroups of 20-30° latitude (3.3%, 255/5069) 200-1000 m altitude (2.2%, 560/11,990). We also analyzed other subgroups such as region, variety, breeding method, precipitation, humidity, and temperature, however, the differences were not significant. Our research indicated that the BLV was still prevalent in some of areas in China. We recommend strengthening the testing of cattle aged >1 year and using flexible testing methods such as PCR to control the prevalence of bovine leukemia and to prevent persistent infection.

Abstract
We describe a B-cell lymphoma of a submandibular lymph node with metastasis to the lung and facial subcutaneous tissues in a water deer ( Hydropotes inermis ). Neoplastic cells contained pleomorphic lymphocytes that were positive for CD79a, consistent with B-cell lymphoma. PCR for bovine leukemia virus was negative.
