Abstract
Microvascular invasion (MVI) diagnosis relies on postoperative pathological examinations, underscoring the urgent need for a novel diagnostic method. C-Reactive Protein (CRP), has shown significant relevance to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis. This study aims to explore the relationship between preoperative serum CRP levels and microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma and develop a nomogram model for predicting MVI. Patients were categorized into MVI-positive and MVI-negative groups for analysis. Serum CRP levels were compared between the two groups. And then use LASSO regression to screen variables and build a nomogram. CRP levels showed significant differences between the MVI-positive and MVI-negative groups. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified CRP (OR = 4.85, P < 0.001), lnAFP (OR = 3.11, P < 0.001), WBC count (OR = 2.73, P = 0.003), and tumor diameter (OR = 2.38, P = 0.01) as independent predictors of MVI. A nomogram based on these variables showed good predictive performance in both the training and validation cohorts with dual validation. The clinical prediction nomogram model, which includes serum CRP levels, WBC count, tumor diameter, and serum AFP levels, showed good performance in predicting MVI in both the training and validation cohorts.

Abstract
Pulmonary cancer is often associated with systemic inflammation and poor nutritional status and these two aspects are strongly correlated and related to the scarce infiltration of a tumor by immune cells. We reviewed all English literature reviews from 2000 to 2024 from PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar, including original articles, review articles, and metanalyses. We excluded non-English language articles and case reports/case series. Generally speaking, nutritional and inflammatory status largely affect medium and long-term prognosis in lung cancer patients. A correct stratification of patients could improve their preoperative general functional nutritional and inflammatory status, minimizing, therefore, possible treatment complications and improving long-term prognosis.

Abstract
Background: The present meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the prognosis of patients with endometrial cancer (EC). Methods: The effect of CRP level on predicting overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with EC was evaluated according to pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% CIs. Results: High CRP levels were not significantly correlated with OS (HR: 1.32 [95% CI: 0.99-1.77]; p = 0.060) or DFS (HR: 1.05 [95% CI: 0.88-1.25]; p = 0.597) in patients with EC. Conclusion: CRP levels did not significantly predict OS or DFS in patients with EC. However, according to subgroup analyses, higher CRP levels were significantly associated with poor OS in Asian patients with EC.

Abstract
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a common malignancy and is associated with poor survival outcomes. Biomarkers of systemic inflammation derived from blood tests collected as part of routine clinical care offer prognostic information for patients with NSCLC that may assist clinical decision making. They are an attractive tool, as they are inexpensive, easily measured, and reproducible in a variety of healthcare settings. Despite the wealth of evidence available to support them, these inflammatory biomarkers are not yet routinely used in clinical practice. In this narrative review, the key inflammatory indices reported in the literature and their prognostic significance in NSCLC are described. Key challenges limiting their clinical application are highlighted, including the need to define the optimal biomarker of systemic inflammation, a lack of understanding of the systemic inflammatory landscape of NSCLC as a heterogenous disease, and the lack of clinical relevance in reported outcomes. These challenges may be overcome with standardised recording and reporting of inflammatory biomarkers, clinicopathological factors, and survival outcomes. This will require a collaborative approach, to which this field of research lends itself. This work may be aided by the rise of data-driven research, including the potential to utilise modern electronic patient records and advanced data-analysis techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a multipotent cytokine involved in inflammation and anti-tumor activity. TNF-α exerts its function upon binding to TNF-receptor 1 (TNF-R1) and TNF-receptor 2 (TNF-R2). This study investigates the relationship of soluble (s) TNF-R1 levels in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with treatment and overall survival. METHODS In total, 134 NSCLC patients treated at the Medical Faculty of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg between 2017 and 2019 were included in this study. Serum levels of sTNF-R1 were measured via ELISA at baseline and during and after treatment. A linear mixed-effects model was used to assess sTNF-R1 changes over time. Linear regression was applied to investigate the association between clinical characteristics and changes in sTNF-R1. Cox regression models were used to estimate associations with overall mortality. RESULTS The estimated average sTNFR-1 at baseline was 2091.71 pg/mL, with a change of 6.19 pg/mL per day. Cox models revealed that the individual change in sTNF-R1 was more strongly associated with mortality than its baseline value, especially after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence that the individual change in sTNF-R1 levels during and after treatment were associated with the risk of mortality, suggesting the use of the sTNF-R1 trajectory as a prognostic marker.

Abstract
The proportion of patients diagnosed with cancer has been shown to rise with the increasing aging global population. Advanced age is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality in older adults. As individuals experience varying health statuses, particularly with age, it poses a challenge for medical professionals in the cancer field to obtain standardized treatment outcomes. Hence, relying solely on chronological age and disease-related parameters is inadequate for clinical decision-making for elderly patients. With functional, multimorbidity-related, and psychosocial changes that occur with aging, oncologic diseases may develop and be treated differently from younger patients, leading to unique challenges in treatment efficacy and tolerance. To overcome this challenge, personalized therapy using biomarkers has emerged as a promising solution. Various categories of biomarkers, including inflammatory, hematological, metabolic, endocrine, and DNA modification-related indicators, may display features related to both cancer and aging, aiding in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for patients with cancer in old age. Furthermore, physical functional measurements as non-molecular phenotypic biomarkers are being investigated for their potential complementary role in structured multidomain strategies to combat age-related diseases such as cancer. This review provides insight into the current developments, recent discoveries, and significant challenges in cancer and aging biomarkers, with a specific focus on their application in advanced age.

Abstract
Background The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effects of oral omega-3 fatty acids in lowering the risk of malnutrition and improving the inflammatory response in patients with stage II-III lung cancer receiving postoperative chemotherapy. Methods One hundred and three lung cancer patients identified as being at risk for malnutrition according to the 2002 nutritional risk screening criteria were randomized into either the omega-3 fatty acid supplementation group or the placebo group during postoperative chemotherapy. Data on anthropometric parameters, laboratory nutritional indicators, and inflammatory markers were collected, and changes and differences between the two groups were compared and analyzed. Results Sixty three patients were included in the final analysis. The baseline information of the two groups of patients was comparable (p > 0.05). After 12 weeks, patients in the treatment group exhibited significantly higher levels of hemoglobin (11.26 ± 1.25 vs.10.60 ± 0.94, p = 0.021) and serum albumin (45.38 ± 5.06 vs.42.66 ± 5.06, p = 0.036) compared with those in the placebo group. Meanwhile, the levels of inflammatory factors C-reactive protein (2.16 ± 1.06 vs. 4.11 ± 1.72, p < 0.001), interleukin-1 (6.61 ± 2.19 vs.10.85 ± 3.61, p < 0.001), interleukin-6 (2.48 ± 1.20 vs. 4.53 ± 0.98, p < 0.001), interleukin-8 (9.26 ± 2.69 vs. 39.01 ± 6.53, p < 0.001), and tumor necrosis factor-α (1.88 ± 0.60 vs. 4.07 ± 0.97, p < 0.001) were significantly decreased in the treatment group. In contrast, differences in weight, BMI, upper arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, triglycerides, cholesterol, and IFN-γ between the two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Finally, in the treatment group, the levels of hemoglobin (10.89 ± 1.15 vs. 11.82 ± 1.21, p = 0.042), triglyceride (0.92 ± 0.29 vs. 1.03 ± 0.22, p = 0.043), and cholesterol (3.56 ± 0.82 vs. 4.23 ± 0.88, p = 0.045) were higher in stage II patients after the intervention compared with stage III patients. Conclusion Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids improved nutritional status and reduced chronic inflammatory responses in patients with stage II-III non-small cell lung cancer undergoing postoperative chemotherapy. Abstract
There is growing evidence that inflammatory, immunologic, and metabolic status is associated with cancer patients survival. Here, we built a simple algorithm to predict lung cancer outcome. Perioperative routine blood tests (RBT) of a cohort of patients with resectable primary lung cancer (LC) were analysed. Inflammatory, immunologic, and metabolic profiles were used to create a single algorithm (RBT index) predicting LC survival. A concurrent cohort of patients with resectable lung metastases (LM) was used to validate the RBT index. Charts of 2088 consecutive LC and 1129 LM patients undergoing lung resection were evaluated. Among RBT parameters, C-reactive protein (CRP), lymphocytes, neutrophils, hemoglobin, albumin and glycemia independently correlated with survival, and were used to build the RBT index. Patients with a high RBT index had a higher 5-year mortality than low RBT patients (adjusted HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.62-2.31). High RBT patients also showed a fourfold higher risk of 30-day postoperative mortality (2.3% vs. 0.5%, p 0.0019). The LM analysis validated the results of the LC cohort. We developed a simple and easily available multifunctional tool predicting short-term and long-term survival of curatively resected LC and LM. Prospective external validation of RBT index is warranted.

Abstract
The possibility of the preoperative level of 42 indicators characterizing the cellular composition and metabolism in blood of patients with stage III lung adenocarcinoma (AC) to predict their relapse-free survival was studied. Blood samples of 451 patients with newly diagnosed AK stage III after their surgical treatment (resection volume - R0) have been investigated. The duration of the relapse-free period (period of observation - 1 year), cellular composition of the blood, concentration of C-RP, albumin, Cyfra 21-1 antigens, SCC, TPA, chemokines CXCL5, CXCL8, pyruvate kinase TuM2 PK isoenzyme, HIF-1α and hyaluronic acid in blood serum so as the proportion of blood cells with CXCR1 and CXCR2, CD44V6 receptors in blood serum were measured. To determine the dependence of the duration of the relapse-free period after the treatment on the observation time, Kaplan-Meier graphs were built. The relationship between the determined parameters and survival was judged using single- and multi-factor Cox proportional hazard models. Comparison of groups with different risk of AK recurrence was performed using the Log Rank test and χ2. The assessment of the predictive information content of laboratory tests was carried out using ROC analysis. It was shown that the concentration of monocytes, eosinophilic leukocytes, the relative quantity of lymphocytes with CXCR1 receptor, the level of Cyfra 21-1 before surgical treatment were associated with the duration of the relapse-free period. A regression equation was compiled, which included the level of Cyfra 21-1, relative content of lymphocytes with CXCR1, and the eosinophilic leukocytes / monocytes ratio. Based on the threshold value Y=0,597, a Kaplan-Meier plot of patient survival was built and the results of it correspond to the TNM stratification. The prognostic sensitivity of the results of the equation - 85,7%, the specificity - 94,7%.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between adherence to a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in Italian heavy smokers undergoing an LDCT screening program (bioMILD trial), using scores calculated by simple questionnaires. Simple formats of food frequency questionnaires were administered to a sample of 2438 volunteers, and the adherence to a healthy diet was measured by the validated 14-point MEDAS and by two adaptations proposed by us: 17-item revised-MEDAS and 18-item revised-MEDAS. The OR of CRP ≥ 2 mg/L for 1-point increase in 14-point MEDAS score was 0.95 (95% CI 0.91–0.99), for 17-point score was 0.94 (95% CI 0.91–0.98), and for 18-point score was 0.92 (95% CI 0.88–0.97). These inverse associations remained statistically significant also after further adjustment for body mass index. These results showed the efficacy of simplified scores and their relationship with lower levels of CRP in a population of heavy smokers. This suggests that a targeted nutritional intervention might achieve a substantial reduction in CRP levels. The findings will be prospectively tested in a new randomized study on primary prevention during lung cancer screening.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of 2-Deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) uptake in the bone marrow (BM) and primary tumors on dual-time-point (DTP) PET/CT for predicting progression-free survival (PFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We retrospectively analyzed DTP [18F]FDG PET/CT images from 211 patients with NSCLC. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) of primary lung cancer and mean [18F]FDG uptake of the BM (BM SUV) were measured from early and delayed PET/CT images, and the percent changes in these parameters (∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV) were calculated. On multivariate survival analysis, the maximum SUV and BM SUV on both early and delayed PET/CT scans were significantly associated with PFS, while the ∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV failed to show statistical significance. For DMFS, the ∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV were independent predictors along with the TNM stage. Distant progression was observed only in 1.3% of patients with low ∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV, whereas 28.2% of patients with high ∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV experienced distant progression. The ∆maximum SUV and ∆BM SUV on DTP [18F]FDG PET/CT were significant independent predictors for DMFS in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer can lead to a series of problems such as malnutrition and inflammatory reaction. Some studies have shown that ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) could improve malnutrition and regulate inflammatory reaction in these patients, but no relevant meta-analysis exists. METHODS We systematically searched randomized controlled trials of ω-3 PUFAs in the adjuvant treatment of lung cancer in the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases. Relevant outcomes were extracted, and we pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) using a random or fixed-effects model. The risk of bias was evaluated according to the Cochrane Handbook (version 15.1). The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS A total of 7 studies were included. The SMDs (95% CI) of body weight change, albumin change, energy intake, and protein intake at the end of intervention were 1.15 (0.50, 1.80), 0.60 (0.11, 1.09), 0.39 (-0.10, 0.89), and 0.27 (-0.04, 0.58), respectively. The SMDs (95% CI) of CRP change and TNF-α change were -3.44 (-6.15, -0.73) and -1.63 (-2.53, -0.73), respectively. CONCLUSIONS ω-3 PUFAs can improve nutritional status and regulate indicators of inflammation in patients with lung cancer undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Abstract
Purpose This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of the combination of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, lymphocyte, and albumin in patients with resectable colorectal cancer. Patients and Methods Seven-hundred-and-nineteen patients who underwent colorectal cancer resection in Hubei Cancer Hospital were included. Inflammation-Immunity-Nutrition score (0–6) was constructed based on preoperative high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, lymphocyte, and albumin. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve, decision curve, Kaplan-Meier survival curve, Cox regression, and C-index were conducted to detect the prognostic values of inflammation-immunity-nutrition score. The prognostic values of inflammation-immunity-nutrition score in different subgroups by sex, location of tumor, pathologic stage, and KRAS mutation were also explored. The prognostic performance of inflammation-immunity-nutrition score was further compared with that of other traditional prognostic indicators. Results The median follow-up time was 40 months. High inflammation-immunity-nutrition score (>2 scores) presented worse survival, with the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 3.106 (2.202–4.380) for overall survival and 2.105 (1.604–2.764) for disease-free survival. Besides, the associations of high inflammation-immunity-nutrition score with overall survival were even stronger in cases with wild type KRAS, with the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 4.018 (2.355–6.854). Considering the AUCs, C-indices, and hazard ratios estimates, inflammation-immunity-nutrition score presented better prognostic performance than high-sensitivity modified Glasgow prognostic score, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein to albumin ratio, prognostic nutrition index, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 for overall survival. Conclusion Inflammation-immunity-nutrition score might serve as a powerful prognostic score in patients with colorectal cancer for overall survival, particularly in patients with wild type KRAS.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pretreatment C-reactive protein (CRP) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) on outcomes after stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for T1N0M0 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as a supplementary analysis of JCOG0403. Patients were divided into high and low CRP groups with a threshold value of 0.3 mg/dL. The paraspinous musculature area at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra was measured on simulation computed tomography (CT). When the area was lower than the sex-specific median, the patient was classified into the low SMM group. Toxicities, overall survival (OS) and cumulative incidence of cause-specific death were compared between the groups. Sixty operable and 92 inoperable patients were included. In the operable cohort, OS significantly differed between the CRP groups (log-rank test p = 0.009; 58.8% and 83.6% at three years for high and low CRP, respectively). This difference in OS was mainly attributed to the difference in lung cancer deaths (Gray's test p = 0.070; 29.4% and 7.1% at three years, respectively). No impact of SMM on OS was observed. The incidence of Grade 3-4 toxicities tended to be higher in the low SMM group (16.7% vs 0%, Fisher's exact test p = 0.052). In the inoperable cohort, no significant impact on OS was observed for either CRP or SMM. The toxicity incidence was also not different between the CRP and SMM groups. The present study suggests that pretreatment CRP level may provide prognostic information in operable patients receiving SBRT for early-stage NSCLC.

Abstract
Objectives Our study will investigate the effect of ultrasound-guided thoracic paravertebral block (UG-TPVB) on postoperative pain, quality of life, and enhanced recovery in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing lobectomy surgery. Methods Our study included 100 patients aged 52 to 75 years who underwent lobectomy surgery with pathological diagnosis of NSCLC. Patients received ultrasound-guided thoracic paravertebral block or general anesthesia with tracheal intubation. Patients' pain score was recorded on a numeric rating scale (NRS) 24 hours post operation. The total postoperative dosage of tramadol hydrochloride, length of hospitalization, quality of life (QoL), and inflammation levels were recorded. Results Compared with patients who received general anesthesia with tracheal intubation, patients in the UG-TPVB group had lower postoperative NRS scores at 24 h (1.8 vs. 3.5, P = 0.035); the average 24 h postoperative NRS score of the UG-TPVB group is lower than that of the general anesthesia with tracheal intubation (4.6 vs. 5.3, P = 0.012), thus receiving less dosage of tramadol hydrochloride (221 ± 45 vs. 250 ± 38 mg, P < 0.01). Patients in the UG-TPVB group had better EORTC QLQ-C30 scores compared with patients in the general anesthesia with tracheal intubation group. The difference of length of hospitalization, hs-CRP, and IL-6 between two groups did not reach statistical difference (length of hospitalization 6.2 vs. 6.9 days, P = 0.055; hs-CRP: 7.1 ± 1.9 vs. 10.4 ± 6.6, P = 0.095; and IL-6: 71.3 ± 7.2 vs. 68.9 ± 8.7, P = 0.529). Discussion. NSCLC patients undergoing lobectomy surgery who received UG-TPVB had less postoperative pain, used less dosage of tramadol hydrochloride, and had better QoL.

Abstract
C-reactive protein (CRP) has been studied extensively for association with a large number of non-infectious diseases and outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the breadth and validity of associations between CRP and non-infectious, chronic health outcomes and biomarkers. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses and a systematic review of Mendelian randomization (MR) studies. PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were systematically searched from inception up to March 2019. Meta-analyses of observational studies and MR studies examining associations between CRP and health outcomes were identified, excluding studies on the diagnostic value of CRP for infections. We found 113 meta-analytic comparisons of observational studies and 196 MR analyses, covering a wide range of outcomes. The overwhelming majority of the meta-analyses of observational studies reported a nominally statistically significant result (95/113, 84.1%); however, the majority of the meta-analyses displayed substantial heterogeneity (47.8%), small study effects (39.8%) or excess significance (41.6%). Only two outcomes, cardiovascular mortality and venous thromboembolism, showed convincing evidence of association with CRP levels. When examining the MR literature, we found MR studies for 53/113 outcomes examined in the observational study meta-analyses but substantial support for a causal association with CRP was not observed for any phenotype. Despite the striking amount of research on CRP, convincing evidence for associations and causal effects is remarkably limited.

Abstract
Skin cutaneous melanoma is characterized by significant heterogeneity in its molecular, genomic and immunologic features. Whole transcriptome RNA sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas of skin cutaneous melanoma (n = 328) was utilized. CIBERSORT was used to identify immune cell type composition, on which unsupervised hierarchical clustering was performed. Analysis of overall survival was performed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Membership in the lymphocyte:monocytelow, monocytehi gh and M0high cluster was an independently poor prognostic factor for survival (HR: 3.03; 95% CI: 1.12-8.20; p = 0.029) and correlated with decreased predicted response to immune checkpoint blockade. In conclusion, an M0-macrophage-enriched, lymphocyte-to-monocyte-ratio-low phenotype in the primary melanoma tumor site independently characterizes an aggressive phenotype that may differentially respond to treatment.

Abstract
The acute phase reaction is a systemic response to acute or chronic inflammation. The serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP) is the only acute phase biomarker widely used in routine clinical practice, including its uses for prognostics and therapy monitoring in cancer patients. Although Interleukin 6 (IL6) is a main trigger of the acute phase reactions, a series of acute phase reactants can contribute (e.g., other members in IL6 family or IL1 subfamily, and tumor necrosis factor α). However, the experience from patients receiving intensive chemotherapy for hematological malignancies has shown that, besides CRP, other biomarkers (e.g., cytokines, soluble cytokine receptors, soluble adhesion molecules) also have altered systemic levels as a part of the acute phase reaction in these immunocompromised patients. Furthermore, CRP and white blood cell counts can serve as a dual prognostic predictor in solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Recent studies also suggest that biomarker profiles as well as alternative inflammatory mediators should be further developed to optimize the predictive utility in cancer patients. Finally, the experience from allogeneic stem cell transplantation suggests that selected acute phase reactants together with specific markers of organ damages are useful for predicting or diagnosing graft versus host disease. Acute phase proteins may also be useful to identify patients (at risk of) developing severe immune-mediated toxicity after anticancer immunotherapy. To conclude, future studies of acute phase predictors in human malignancies should not only investigate the conventional inflammatory mediators (e.g., CRP, white blood cell counts) but also combinations of novel inflammatory parameters with specific markers of organ damages.

Abstract
Inflammation is reportedly associated with the development and progression of various malignancies. However, the clinical significance of preoperative and postoperative inflammation in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery is unknown. The relationship between preoperative and postoperative C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of inflammation, and survival was retrospectively analyzed in 356 patients who underwent complete resection of pathologic Stage I and II non-small cell lung cancers. Cutoffs for preoperative CRP (CRPpre), postoperative maximum levels of CRP (CRPmax), and postoperative CRP levels 30 days after surgery (CRP30) were determined as 0.2 mg/dL, 6.4 mg/dL, and 0.2 mg/dL, respectively. Patients with CRPprehigh, CRPmaxhigh, or CRP30high status had significantly poorer overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) than those with CRPprelow, CRPmaxlow, or CRP30low. Patients were stratified into 4 groups according to perioperative CRP grades, combining CRPprehigh, CRPmaxhigh, and CRP30high statuses, yielding groups with grades 0, 1, 2, and 3. OS and RFS significantly worsened with increasing grade. After controlling for potential confounders, the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model revealed perioperative CRP grade as an independent poor prognostic factor for OS (grade 3 vs grade 0): adjusted hazard ratio, 5.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.59-19.6; P = 0.005), and RFS (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.62; 95% confidence interval, 1.50-9.33; P = 0.004). Perioperative inflammation was associated with a long-term negative prognostic impact after lobectomy for lung cancer. Further prospective analysis is required to identify whether control of perioperative inflammation may improve prognosis after lung cancer surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Independent validation of risk prediction models in prospective cohorts is required for risk-stratified cancer prevention. Such studies often have a two-phase design, where information on expensive biomarkers are ascertained in a nested substudy of the original cohort. METHODS We propose a simple approach for evaluating model discrimination that accounts for incomplete follow-up and gains efficiency by using data from all individuals in the cohort irrespective of whether they were sampled in the substudy. For evaluating the AUC, we estimated probabilities of risk-scores for cases being larger than those in controls conditional on partial risk-scores, computed using partial covariate information. The proposed method was compared with an inverse probability weighted (IPW) approach that used information only from the subjects in the substudy. We evaluated age-stratified AUC of a model including questionnaire-based risk factors and inflammation biomarkers to predict 10-year risk of lung cancer using data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer (1993-2009) trial (30,297 ever-smokers, 1,253 patients with lung cancer). RESULTS For estimating age-stratified AUC of the combined lung cancer risk model, the proposed method was 3.8 to 5.3 times more efficient compared with the IPW approach across the different age groups. Extensive simulation studies also demonstrated substantial efficiency gain compared with the IPW approach. CONCLUSIONS Incorporating information from all individuals in a two-phase cohort study can substantially improve precision of discrimination measures of lung cancer risk models. IMPACT Novel, simple, and practically useful methods are proposed for evaluating risk models, a critical step toward risk-stratified cancer prevention.

Abstract
Background: The Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), which consists of albumin and C-reactive protein (CRP), may predict overall survival (OS) in cancer patients. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the clinical impact of the preoperative GPS on patients with resected early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: 300 patients with curatively resected stage I NSCLC were followed-up for OS, recurrence-free survival (RFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and death from other causes. Results: 229 patients (76%) had a preoperative GPS of 0, and 71 (24%) a GPS ≥ 1. The three-year probabilities of RFS, OS, CSS, and death from other causes were 81%, 84%, 88%, and 96% in patients with GPS = 0, and 79%, 74%, 91%, and 82% in patients with a GPS ≥ 1, respectively. GPS ≥ 1 was significantly associated with a higher risk of death from other causes (p = 0.022), serving as an independent predictor of death from other causes (p = 0.034). Pathologically elevated CRP levels (CRP > 5 mg/L) were found in 91 patients (30%). The mean CRP level was 7.88 ± 15.80 mg/L (0.5–135.6 mg/L). Pre-treatment CRP level was significantly associated with coronary heart disease (p < 0.0001), histology (p = 0.013), tumor size (p = 0.018), tumor stage (p = 0.002), and vascular invasion (p = 0.017). Conclusion: The preoperative GPS predicts adverse survival outcomes in patients with resected stage I NSCLC.

Abstract
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are key components of the tumor microenvironment that can be polarized into different phenotypes, including tumor-inhibiting M1 macrophages and tumor-promoting M2 macrophages. To elucidate the biological and clinical significance of M2 TAMs in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a comprehensive clinical assessment of the tissue distribution of M2 TAMs was performed. The tissue distribution of M2 TAMs was retrospectively analyzed using CD163 immunohistochemistry in 160 consecutive patients who underwent NSCLC resection. Tumor proliferation was evaluated via the Ki-67 proliferation index. The results revealed that the stromal density of M2 TAMs was significantly associated with the C-reactive protein (CRP) level (P=0.0250), the Ki-67 proliferation index (P=0.0090) and invasive size (P=0.0285). Furthermore, the stromal M2 TAM density was significantly associated with tumor differentiation (P=0.0018), lymph node metastasis (P=0.0347) and pathological stage (P=0.0412). The alveolar M2 TAM density was also significantly associated with the CRP level (P=0.0309), invasive size (P<0.0001), tumor differentiation (P=0.0192), tumor status (P=0.0108) and pathological stage (P=0.0110). By contrast, no association was observed between islet M2 TAM density and the aforementioned biological and clinical factors. In regards to prognosis, disease-free survival rate was significantly lower in patients with stromal M2 TAM-high tumors (P=0.0270) and in those with alveolar M2 TAM-high tumors (P=0.0283). Furthermore, the overall survival rate was also significantly lower in patients with stromal M2 TAM-high tumors (P=0.0162) and in those with alveolar M2 TAM-high tumors (P=0.0225). Therefore, during NSCLC progression, M2 TAMs may induce tumor cell aggressiveness and proliferation and increase metastatic potential, resulting in a poor prognosis in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
Background Several previous researchers have investigated the prognostic value of the combinations of systemic inflammatory markers. However, the prognostic power of these systemic inflammatory markers is not identical. We aimed to establish a novel prognostic score based on systemic inflammatory markers. Methods Four hundred non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who underwent surgery and were followed more than 5 years were included. Univariate and multivariate analyses were calculated by the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results Among systemic inflammatory markers which were used for the previously reported indexes, preoperative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and body mass index (BMI) were independent prognostic markers in multivariate analysis, while serum albumin level, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio were not. Based on this result, a novel score was established. Patients with both normal CRP (< 0.13 ng/dL) and high BMI (> 20.6 kg/m2) were allocated a score of 0. Patients in whom only one of these abnormalities was present were allocated a score of 1, whilst those with both high CRP and low BMI were given a score of 2. Patients with score 0 had 84.44% of 5-year cancer-specific survival, while patients with score 1 - 2 had a 61.88%. On multivariate analysis, this novel score was an independent prognostic factor. Conclusion This novel score based on CRP and BMI might serve as an efficient prognostic indicator in resected NSCLC.

Abstract

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening trials have based their risk selection algorithm on age and tobacco exposure, but never on pulmonary risk-related biomarkers. In the present study, the baseline inflammatory status, measured by C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and lung function, measured by forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), were tested as independent predictors of all-cause mortality in LDCT-screening participants. Between 2000 and 2010, 4413 volunteers were enrolled in two LDCT-screening trials, with evaluable baseline CRP and FEV1 values: 2037 were included in the discovery set and 2376 were included in the validation set. The effect of low FEV1 or high CRP alone or combined was evaluated by Kaplan–Meier mortality curves and hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) by fitting Cox proportional hazards models. The overall mortality risk was significantly higher in participants with FEV1 of up to 90% (HR: 2.13, CI: 1.43–3.17) or CRP more than 2 mg/l (HR: 3.38, CI: 1.60–3.54) and was still significant in the fully adjusted model. The cumulative 10-year probability of death was 0.03 for participants with FEV1 of more than 90% and CRP up to 2 mg/l, 0.05 with only FEV1 of up to 90% or CRP above 2 mg/l, and 0.12 with FEV1 of up to 90% and CRP above 2 mg/l. This predictive performance was confirmed in the two external validation cohorts with 10-year mortality rates of 0.06, 0.12, and 0.14, and 0.03, 0.07, and 0.14, respectively. Baseline inflammatory status and lung function reduction are independent predictors of all-cause long-term mortality in LDCT-screening participants. CRP and FEV1 could be used to select higher-risk individuals for future LDCT screening and preventive programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To conduct a comprehensive analysis of prospectively measured circulating high sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) concentration and risk of lung cancer overall, by smoking status (never, former, and current smokers), and histological sub-type. DESIGN Nested case-control study. SETTING 20 population based cohort studies in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. PARTICIPANTS 5299 patients with incident lung cancer, with individually incidence density matched controls. EXPOSURE Circulating hsCRP concentrations in prediagnostic serum or plasma samples. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Incident lung cancer diagnosis. RESULTS A positive association between circulating hsCRP concentration and the risk of lung cancer for current (odds ratio associated with a doubling in hsCRP concentration 1.09, 95% confidence interval 1.05 to 1.13) and former smokers (1.09, 1.04 to 1.14) was observed, but not for never smokers (P<0.01 for interaction). This association was strong and consistent across all histological subtypes, except for adenocarcinoma, which was not strongly associated with hsCRP concentration regardless of smoking status (odds ratio for adenocarcinoma overall 0.97, 95% confidence interval 0.94 to 1.01). The association between circulating hsCRP concentration and the risk of lung cancer was strongest in the first two years of follow-up for former and current smokers. Including hsCRP concentration in a risk model, in addition to smoking based variables, did not improve risk discrimination overall, but slightly improved discrimination for cancers diagnosed in the first two years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Former and current smokers with higher circulating hsCRP concentrations had a higher risk of lung cancer overall. Circulating hsCRP concentration was not associated with the risk of lung adenocarcinoma. Circulating hsCRP concentration could be a prediagnostic marker of lung cancer rather than a causal risk factor.

Abstract
Background Systemic inflammation appears to play a role in the progression of numerous solid tumors by promoting tumor proliferation. Our current study aimed to evaluate the role of inflammatory markers in limited disease (LD) small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients undergoing thoracic chemoradiotherapy (TCR). Patients and methods We retrospectively analyzed a total number of 350 SCLC patients diagnosed with LD SCLC who received TCR between 1999 and 2017 and had available blood tests within 2 weeks prior to the start of TCR. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), hemoglobin (Hb) levels, and platelet count (Pc) were evaluated as potential inflammatory markers. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was performed for overall survival (OS). For comparison of survival curves, the log-rank (Mantel–Cox) test was used. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional HRs were used to assess the influence of cofactors on OS. Results Univariate analysis for OS revealed a statistically significant effect for LDH >400 U/L (HR 2.05 U/L; 95% CI 1.29–3.26 U/L; P=0.002), prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI; HR 0.58; 95% CI 0.40–0.85; P=0.005), CRP >50 mg/L (HR 1.49 mg/L; 95% CI 1.05–2.10 mg/L; P=0.026), and Karnofsky performance scale (KPS) <70% (HR 1.35%; 95% CI 1.02–1.80%; P=0.035). NLR, age (>70 years), Hb levels, and Pc did not influence survival. In multivariate analysis, OS was significantly affected by PCI (HR 0.64; 95% CI 0.43–0.94; P=0.026), LDH >400 U/L (HR 1.91 U/L; 95% CI 1.21–3.05 U/L; P=0.006), and CRP >50 mg/L (HR 1.43 mg/L; 95% CI 1.01–2.04 mg/L; P=0.045). KPS (≤70%) did not influence survival in multivariate analysis. Conclusion Elevated CRP and LDH seem to be the independent prognostic factors for OS in LD SCLC patients undergoing TCR. However, elevated NLR was not found to be an independent prognostic factor for OS if taken prior to TCR. LDH and CRP are easily available blood tests and do not require additional resources for routine use and could be useful for clinical decision making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is reported to be associated with clinical outcomes and has been proven to be a promising prognostic indicator in several solid tumor types. To the best of our knowledge, however, no studies regarding SII in patients with resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are available. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred forty-one patients with NSCLC who underwent surgery at our Institution between 2008 and 2012 were included. The SII was calculated using the formula: platelet count × neutrophil/lymphocyte count. The optimal cut-off value was calculated using the Cutoff Finder (http://molpath.charite.de/cutoff). Univariate and multivariate analyses were calculated by the Cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS The optimal cut-off value was 471.2×109/l for SII. A low SII was associated with female gender, never smoking status, adenocarcinoma histology, higher pathological TNM stage and low level of serum C-reactive protein, but not age, serum carcinoembryonic antigen or cytokeratin 19 fragment level. Patients of the low SII group had a significantly better 5-year overall survival than those with high SII (83.61% vs. 60.39%, p<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that the SII was a significant independent predictive indicator for cancer-specific survival (p=0.007). CONCLUSION This is the first study to demonstrate that the SII could represent an independent prognostic factor for patients with resectable NSCLC.

Abstract
Smokers have higher levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) compared to never smokers. The role of smoking cessation on CRP is still under debate. Using data from two screening studies conducted in Italy in 2000–2010 on 3050 heavy smokers (including 777 ex-smokers), we estimated multivariate odds ratios (OR) for high CRP (i.e. ≥2 mg/L) according to smoking status. Moreover, in a longitudinal analysis based on 975 current smokers, with a second measurement of CRP after an average study period of 3.4 years, we estimated the changes in CRP according to smoking cessation. Prevalence of high CRP at baseline was 35.8% among ex-smokers and 41.1% among current smokers (significant OR for ex- vs. current smokers: 0.79). After four years since smoking cessation, CRP levels significantly decreased with increasing years of cessation (significant OR for ex-smokers since more than 8 years: 0.55). In the longitudinal analysis, no significant reduction in CRP was found for time since smoking cessation (ORs: 1.21, 1.04, and 0.91 for ex-smokers since 1 year, 2–3 years, and ≥4 years, respectively). In the largest prospective study available so far, we found that smoking cessation has a favourable effect on CRP, but this benefit is not evident in the short-term.

Abstract
Background The development of both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer (LC) is influenced by smoking related chronic pulmonary inflammation caused by an excessive innate immune response to smoke exposure. In addition, the smoking induced formation of covalent bonds between the carcinogens and DNA and the accumulation of permanent somatic mutations in critical genes are important in the carcinogenic processes, and can also induce inflammatory responses. How chronic inflammation is mirrored by serum markers in COPD and LC and if these markers reflect prognosis in patients with LC is, however, largely unknown. Methods Serum levels of 18 markers reflecting inflammation, endothelial activation and extracellular matrix remodelling were analysed in 207 patients with non-small lung carcinoma (NSCLC) before surgery and 42 COPD patients. 56% of the LC patients also suffered from COPD. The serum samples were analysed by enzyme immunoassays. Results Serum levels of OPG, PTX3, AXL, ALCAM, sCD163, CD147, CatS and DLL1 were significantly higher in patients with COPD as compared to patients with LC. High sTNFR1 levels were associated with improved progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in LC patients with (PFS hazard ratio (HR) 0.49, OS HR 0.33) and without COPD (OS HR 0.30). High levels of OPG were associated with improved PFS (HR 0.17) and OS (HR 0.14) for LC with COPD. CRP was significantly associated with overall survival regardless of COPD status. Conclusion Several markers reflecting inflammation, endothelial activation and extracellular matrix remodelling are elevated in serum from patients with COPD compared to LC patients. Presence of COPD might influence the levels of circulating biomarkers. Some of these markers are also associated with prognosis. Abstract
BACKGROUND A number of studies have investigated the prognostic impact of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with melanoma but the results were controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to explore the prognostic value of NLR in melanoma. METHODS The databases of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were thoroughly searched. Associations between NLR and overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were investigated by pooling hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A total of 12 studies comprising 3207 patients were finally included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that a high NLR was associated with poor OS (HR = 2.23, 95% CI = 1.64-3.04, P < .001, random-effects model) and PFS (HR = 2.19, 95% CI = 1.78-2.69, P < .001, fixed-effects model). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that NLR was still associated with poor OS and PFS for patients in Western countries who were treated with ipilimumab. No significant publication bias was found in this meta-analysis. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis demonstrated that a high NLR was predictive of poor OS and PFS in patients with melanoma.

Abstract
Background Previous study of ours showed that advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are independent significant prognostic factors in operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Since both ALI and CRP are markers of inflammation, the aim of this study was to examine whether the combination of ALI and CRP is a prognostic indicator of resected NSCLC or not. Methods Three hundred forty-one NSCLC patients who underwent surgery at our institution between 2008 and 2012 were included. ALI score was calculated as BMI × ALB/NLR with BMI indicating body mass index, ALB indicating serum albumin and NLR indicating neutrophil lymphocyte ratio. The prognostic significance of the combination of ALI and CRP was evaluated. Results Compared to patients with high ALI (> 37.67) group, low ALI group had significantly poorer cancer-specific survival. Similarly, patients with high CRP (> 0.15 mg/dL) had poorer survival. Based on the combination of ALI and CRP, patients with high ALI and low CRP were assigned an ALI_CRP score of 0, those with both high or both low were assigned an ALI_CRP score of 1, and those with low ALI and high CRP were assigned an ALI_CRP score of 2. The patients’ cancer-specific survival was significantly related to this ALI_CRP score. On multivariate analysis, gender, histology, pN status, serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level and the ALI_CRP score were associated independently with cancer-specific survival. Conclusions The combination of ALI and CRP is a useful predictor of overall survival and could be a simple prognostic tool to help identify operable NSCLC patients.

Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and has very poor treatment outcome. Biomarkers useful for screening and assessing early therapeutic response may significantly improve the therapeutic outcome but are still lacking. In this study, serum samples from 218 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, 34 small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients and 171 matched healthy controls from China were analyzed for 11 proteins using the Luminex multiplex assay. Eight of the 11 proteins (OPN, SAA, CRP, CYFRA21.1, CEA, NSE, AGP and HGF) are significantly elevated in NSCLC and SCLC (p = 10−5−10−59). At the individual protein level, OPN has the best diagnostic value for NSCLC (AUC = 0.92), two acute phase proteins (SAA and CRP) have AUC near 0.83, while CEA and CYFRA21.1 also possess good AUC (0.81 and 0.77, respectively). More importantly, several three-protein combinations that contain OPN and CEA plus one of four proteins (CRP, SAA, CYFRA21.1 or NSE) have excellent diagnostic potential for NSCLC (AUC = 0.96). Four proteins (CYFRA21.1, CRP, SAA and NSE) are severely reduced and three proteins (OPN, MIF and NSE) are moderately decreased after platinum-based chemotherapy. Therapeutic response index (TRI) computed with 3–5 proteins suggests that approximately 25% of the NSCLC patients respond well to the therapy and TRI is significantly correlated with pre-treatment protein levels. Our data suggest that therapeutic response in NSCLC patients can be effectively measured but personalized biomarkers may be needed to monitor different subsets of patients.

Abstract
Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a major subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). Due to its low incidence, the characteristics of AITL are still not well understood. The prognostic evaluation of this disease has not been established.We retrospectively analyzed 52 patients with newly diagnosed AITL in China between January 2008 and September 2016.Among these patients, the median age at diagnosis was 62 (40-83) and 58% (30/52) of the patients were older than 60 years. Thirty-five patients were male, accounting for 67.3% of the whole. Among these, 90% (47/52) of the diagnoses were estimated at advanced stage. A total of 25 (48%) patients were scored >1 by the ECOG performance status. Systemic B symptoms were described in 34 (65%) patients. When evaluated by International Prognostic Index (IPI), 81% were scored >2, and 77% got >1 score according to the prognostic index for PTCL (PIT) upon diagnosis. The 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 44% and the 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was 52%. IPI and PIT scores could not be effectively applied to stratify those AITL patients into subgroups. Our multivariate analysis results found that the elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level was an independent adverse factor to the OS of the AITL patients.Patients with AITL had a poor outcome. The serum level of CRP may be applied as an independent prognostic factor for AITL.

Abstract
PURPOSE C-reactive protein (CRP) is a useful biomarker for prediction of long-term outcomes in patients undergoing chronic dialysis. This observational cohort study evaluated whether the time-averaged serum high-sensitivity CRP (HS-CRP) level was a better predictor of clinical outcomes than a single HS-CRP level in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). PATIENTS AND METHODS We classified 335 patients into three tertiles according to the time-averaged serum HS-CRP level and followed up regularly from January 2010 to December 2014. Clinical outcomes such as cardiovascular events, infection episodes, newly developed malignancy, encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), dropout (death plus conversion to hemodialysis), and mortality were assessed. RESULTS During a 5-year follow-up, 164 patients (49.0%) ceased PD; this included 52 patient deaths (15.5%), 100 patients (29.9%) who converted to hemodialysis, and 12 patients (3.6%) who received a kidney transplantation. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test revealed a significantly worse survival accumulation in patients with high time-average HS-CRP levels. A multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a higher time-averaged serum HS-CRP level, older age, and the occurrence of cardiovascular events were independent mortality predictors. A higher time-averaged serum HS-CRP level, the occurrence of cardiovascular events, infection episodes, and EPS were important predictors of dropout. The receiver operating characteristic analysis verified that the value of the time-average HS-CRP level in predicting the 5-year mortality and dropout was superior to a single serum baseline HS-CRP level. CONCLUSION This study shows that the time-averaged serum HS-CRP level is a better marker than a single baseline measurement in predicting the 5-year mortality and dropout in PD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) have been associated with shorter survival in patients with cardiovascular, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer. We investigated the impact of baseline and postoperative CRP levels on survival of patients with operable lung cancer (LC). PATIENTS AND METHODS CRP values at baseline (CRP0) and 3 days after surgery (CRP3) were measured in a consecutive series of 1750 LC patients who underwent complete resection between 2003 and 2015. Patients were classified as having 0 (N = 593), 1 (N = 658) or 2 (N = 553) risk factors: CRP0 and/or CRP3 values above the respective median value. The effect of higher CRP was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier mortality curves and adjusted hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI), by fitting Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Cumulative proportions of 5-year survival were 67% for 0 risk factors, 58% for 1 risk factor and 41% for 2 risk factors (P < 0.0001). The overall 5-year mortality risk was significantly higher in patients with 1 risk factor (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.43 [95% CI 1.14-1.79]), or 2 risk factors (aHR 2.49 [95% CI 1.99-3.11]). A significant impact on survival was observed in each tumour-node-metastasis stage group, and in the subset of non-smokers. Postoperative 30-day mortality was significantly higher in patients with 2 risk factors only (aHR 2.2% versus 0.6%, p < 0.0475). CONCLUSIONS Baseline and postoperative CRP levels predict immediate and long-term mortality in all stages of operable lung cancer. Abstract
The prognostic role of baseline C-reactive protein (CRP) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is controversial. In order to clarify this issue, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the predictive effect of baseline CRP level in COPD patients. 15 eligible articles focusing on late mortality in COPD were included in our study. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis, and assessed heterogeneity and publication bias. We pooled hazard ratio (HR) estimates and their 95% confidence intervals on mortality for the comparison between the study-specific highest category of CRP level versus the lowest category. In overall analysis, elevated baseline CRP levels were significantly associated with higher mortality (HR 1.53, 95% CI 1.32-1.77, I2=68.7%, p<0.001). Similar results were observed across subgroups. However, higher mortality risk was reported in studies using a cut-off value of 3 mg·L-1 (HR 1.61, 95% CI 1.12-2.30) and in those enrolling an Asiatic population (HR 3.51, 95% CI 1.69-7.31). Our analysis indicates that baseline high CRP level is significantly associated with higher late mortality in patients with COPD. Further prospective controlled studies are needed to confirm these data.
