Bibliometric analysis of scientific outputs on psychobiotics: Strengthening the food and mood connection

The role of human microbiota in mental health and the underlying mechanisms of psychobiotics, which can modulate mood and behavior through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, has been a focus of scientific scrutiny. This work presents a bibliometric analysis to uncover research trends and insights in psychobiotics literature. The Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database served as the source for articles and reviews on psychobiotics spanning the years 2012 to 2023. Bibliometric network visualization and graphing were conducted using VOSviewer, Microsoft Excel for Windows 10, and Datawrapper software. A total of 348 publications were included, and it has been determined that the number of publications and citations shows an increasing trend from 2012 to 2023. The most active authors on psychobiotics, in order, were Dinan TG, Cryan JF, and Tsai YC. The most active organizations have been identified as University College Cork, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Bened Biomedical Co. Ltd. The most active countries in psychobiotic research were China, Ireland, and United States of America, while the most active journals were Nutrients, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, and Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins. The most commonly used keywords were "psychobiotics," "probiotics," and "gut-brain axis." This bibliometric analysis has revealed the growing academic interest in psychobiotics, indicating that the relationship between gut microbiota and mental health will increasingly be supported by scientific evidence in the years ahead.

Nanomedicines via the pulmonary route: a promising strategy to reach the target?

Over the past decades, research on nanomedicines as innovative tools in combating complex pathologies has increased tenfold, spanning fields from infectiology and ophthalmology to oncology. This process has further accelerated since the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. When it comes to human health, nano-objects are designed to protect, transport, and improve the solubility of compounds to allow the delivery of active ingredients on their targets. Nanomedicines can be administered by different routes, such as intravenous, oral, intramuscular, or pulmonary routes. In the latter route, nanomedicines can be aerosolized or nebulized to reach the deep lung. This review summarizes existing nanomedicines proposed for inhalation administration, from their synthesis to their potential clinical use. It also outlines the respiratory organs, their structure, and particularities, with a specific emphasis on how these factors impact the administration of nanomedicines. Furthermore, the review addresses the organs accessible through pulmonary administration, along with various pathologies such as infections, genetic diseases, or cancer that can be addressed through inhaled nanotherapeutics. Finally, it examines the existing devices suitable for the aerosolization of nanomedicines and the range of nanomedicines in clinical development.

Research Hotspots and Development Trends on Apolipoprotein B in the Field of Atherosclerosis: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases caused by atherosclerosis (AS) are the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), the core protein of low-density lipoproteins, is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality, with apolipoprotein B (ApoB) playing a critical role in its pathogenesis. However, no bibliometric studies on the involvement of ApoB in AS have been published. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to explore the current and future trends regarding the role of ApoB in AS.

METHODS

Utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection, a thorough search was conducted for ApoB in AS-related papers related to research on ApoB in the field of AS during 1991-2023. The analysis focused on annual publication trends, leading countries/regions and institutions, influential authors, journal and key journals. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were employed to visualize reference co-citations, and keyword co-occurrences, offering insights into the research landscape and emerging trends.

RESULTS

This bibliometric analysis employed network diagrams for cluster analysis of a total of 2105 articles and reviews, evidencing a discernible upward trend in annual publication volume. This corpus of research emanates from 76 countries/regions and 2343 organizations, illustrating the widespread international engagement in ApoB-related AS studies. Notably, the United States and the University of California emerge as the most prolific contributors, which underscores their pivotal roles in advancing this research domain. The thematic investigation has increasingly focused on elucidating the mechanistic involvement of ApoB in atherosclerosis, its potential as a diagnostic biomarker, and its implications for therapeutic strategies.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides the first comprehensive perspective on the evolving promise of ApoB in AS-related research, emphasizing the importance of this molecule in opening up new diagnostic and therapeutic avenues. This study emphasizes the need for continued research and interdisciplinary efforts to strengthen the fight against AS. Furthermore, it emphasizes the critical role of international collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration in leveraging new insights to achieve clinical breakthroughs, thereby addressing the complexities of AS by focusing on ApoB.

An examination of global research trends for exploring the associations between the gut microbiota and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through bibliometric and visualization analysis

BACKGROUND

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognized as a significant health issue. Emerging research has focused on the role of the gut microbiota in NAFLD, emphasizing the gut-liver axis. This study aimed to identify key research trends and guide future investigations in this evolving area.

METHODS

This bibliometric study utilized Scopus to analyze global research on the link between the gut microbiota and NAFLD. The method involved a search strategy focusing on relevant keywords in article titles, refined by including only peer-reviewed journal articles. The data analysis included bibliometric indicators such as publication counts and trends, which were visualized using VOSviewer software version 1.6.20 for network and co-occurrence analysis, highlighting key research clusters and emerging topics.

RESULTS

Among the 479 publications on the gut microbiota and NAFLD, the majority were original articles (n = 338; 70.56%), followed by reviews (n = 119; 24.84%). The annual publication count increased from 1 in 2010 to 118 in 2022, with a significant growth phase starting in 2017 (R2 = 0.9025, p < 0.001). The research was globally distributed and dominated by China (n = 231; 48.23%) and the United States (n = 90; 18.79%). The University of California, San Diego, led institutional contributions (n = 18; 3.76%). Funding was prominent, with 62.8% of the articles supported, especially by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (n = 118; 24.63%). The average citation count was 43.23, with an h-index of 70 and a citation range of 0 to 1058 per article. Research hotspots shifted their focus post-2020 toward the impact of high-fat diets on NAFLD incidence.

CONCLUSIONS

This study has effectively mapped the growing body of research on the gut microbiota-NAFLD relationship, revealing a significant increase in publications since 2017. There is significant interest in gut microbiota and NAFLD research, mainly led by China and the United States, with diverse areas of focus. Recently, the field has moved toward exploring the interconnections among diet, lifestyle, and the gut-liver axis. We hypothesize that with advanced technologies, new opportunities for personalized medicine and a holistic understanding of NAFLD will emerge.

Research trends in lipid-lowering therapies for coronary heart disease combined with hyperlipidemia: a bibliometric study and visual analysis

Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a significant global health and economic challenge, with atherosclerosis being a primary cause. Over the past 40 years, substantial research has been conducted into the prevention and reversal of atherosclerosis, resulting in the development of lipid-lowering agents such as statins and fibrates. Despite the extensive literature and formulation of numerous therapeutic guidelines in this domain, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the current research landscape and trends has not been performed. This study aimed to elucidate the evolution and milestones of research into lipid-lowering treatments for coronary heart disease (CHD) in conjunction with hyperlipidemia through bibliometric analysis, offering insights into future directions for treatment strategies.

Methods

This study examined publications from 1986 to 2023 retrieved from the Web of Science database (Core Collection). Utilizing tools such as VOSviewer, Pajek, and CiteSpace, we analyzed publication and citation numbers, H-indexes, contributions by countries and institutions, authorship, journal sources, and keyword usage to uncover research trajectories and areas of focus.

Results

Our analysis of 587 publications revealed a recent surge in research output, particularly post-2003. The American Journal of Cardiology published the highest number of studies, with 40 articles, whereas Circulation received the highest number of citations (6,266). Key contributors included the United States, Japan, and China, with the United States leading in citation numbers and the H-index. Harvard University and Leiden University emerged as pivotal institutions, and Professors J. Wouter Jukema and Robert P. Giugliano were identified as leading experts. Keyword analysis disclosed five thematic clusters, indicating a shift in research towards new drug combinations and strategies, signaling future research directions.

Conclusion

The last 4 decades have seen a notable rise in publications on lipid-lowering therapies for CHD and hyperlipidemia, with the United States retaining world-leading status. The increase in international collaboration aids the shift towards research into innovative lipid-lowering agents and therapeutic approaches. PCSK9 inhibitors and innovative combination therapies, including antisense oligonucleotides and angiopoietin-like protein 3 inhibitors, provide avenues for future research, intending to maximize the safety and efficacy of treatment approaches.

Hotspots and frontiers in Helicobacter pylori biofilm research: A bibliometric and visualization analysis from 1998 to 2023

Background

Helicobacterpylori (H. pylori) biofilm formation is a key factor in refractory H. pylori infection. The aim of this study was to understand research trends in H. pylori biofilms.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database was used to retrieve publications published from 1998 to 2023. Different kinds of software, EXCEL, an online bibliometric analysis platform, and the VOS viewer were used to evaluate and visualize the bibliometric data.

Results

In total, 184 publications were identified, and the number of publications increased annually. The USA made the greatest contributions to this research field, while Helicobacter was the most productive journal. Grande rossella published the most papers, and the most productive institution was Gabriele D'Annunzio university. Co-occurrence network maps revealed that the keyword "Helicobacter pylori" ranked first in research field, and the keyword of "biofilm formation" and "in vitro" began to appear in the past three to five years. The majority of the five most-cited articles (60%) were published in USA and focused on the mechanism of H. pylori biofilm formation.

Conclusion

The annual number of publications on H. pylori biofilms has increased steadily over the past two decades and will continue to increase. Future studies should focus on evaluate the pharmacological effects, efficacy and safety of these anti-biofilm treatments in animal models and clinical trials.

A bibliometric analysis of research on pediatric preoperative anxiety (2007-2022)

Objective

This study aimed to analyze the current state of research on preoperative anxiety in children through CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the identification of hot spots and frontiers.

Method

Relevant data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using the search terms children and preoperative anxiety. Data were analyzed using VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace (5.7. R5) software, and Scimago Graphica.

Results

A total of 622 articles were published between 2007 and 2022, with an increasing trend over time. Kain, Zeev N. (13; 2.09%) and Dalhousie University (15; 2.41%) were the most influential authors and most prolific institutions, respectively. The United States (121; 19.45%) was the country with the most publications. Pediatric anesthesia (55; 8.84%) had the most publications. High-frequency keywords were categorized into three themes, including nonpharmacologic interventions for preoperative anxiety in children, preoperative medications, and risk factors for anxiety; of these, "predictor" (38; 2016) and "sedative premedication" (20; 2016) were the most studied keywords over the past 6 years. "Distraction" (67; 2019) and "dexmedetomidine" (65; 2019) have been the main areas of interest in recent years.

Conclusion

Research on preoperative anxiety in children has been the focus of increasing attention over the past fifteen years, with the majority of publications from high-income countries. This review provides a useful perspective for understanding research trends, hot topics, and research gaps in this expanding field.

Extracellular vesicles as a new frontier of diagnostic biomarkers in osteosarcoma diseases: a bibliometric and visualized study

The use of liquid biopsy in cancer research has grown exponentially, offering potential for early detection, treatment stratification, and monitoring residual disease and recurrence. Exosomes, released by cancer cells, contain tumor-derived materials and are stable in biofluids, making them valuable biomarkers for clinical evaluation. Bibliometric research on osteosarcoma (OS) and exosome-derived diagnostic biomarkers is scarce. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a bibliometric evaluation of studies on OS and exosome-derived biomarkers. Using the Web of Science Core Collection database, Microsoft Excel, the R "Bibliometrix" package, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software, quantitative analyses of the country, author, annual publications, journals, institutions, and keywords of studies on exosome-derived biomarkers for OS from 1995 to 2023 were performed. High-quality records (average citation rate ≥ 10/year) were filtered. The corresponding authors were mainly from China, the USA, Australia, and Canada. The University of Kansas Medical Center, National Cancer Center, Japan, and University of Kansas were major institutions, with limited cooperation reported by the University of Kansas Medical Center. Keyword analysis revealed a shift from cancer progression to mesenchymal stem cells, exosome expression, biogenesis, and prognostic biomarkers. Qualitative analysis highlighted exosome cargo, including miRNAs, circRNAs, lncRNAs, and proteins, as potential diagnostic OS biomarkers. This research emphasizes the rapid enhancement of exosomes as a diagnostic frontier, offering guidance for the clinical application of exosome-based liquid biopsy in OS, contributing to the evolving landscape of cancer diagnosis.

Exploring the Perspective of Oral Microbiome Studies in PubMed Database: A Bibliometric Appraisal

This research aims to postulate an exhaustive sketch of the current research background on the oral microbiome to emphasize prevailing research trends. On November 25, 2023, a digital exploration was conducted on the PubMed platform. The search strategy employed was- '(Microbiome, Microbiota, Microorganisms, Bacteria, Virus, Fungi) AND (Oral, Dental, Saliva, Plaque, Gingival Crevicular Fluid)'. Inclusive criteria comprised review articles, clinical trials, and meta-analyses. The Biblioshiny app and VOSviewer software were used to create and visualize bibliometric maps for network, thematic, and factorial analyses. The PubMed database search unveiled 215,068 published research studies on the oral microbiome, indicating a fluctuating publication pattern with an all-embracing mounting trajectory. Notably, there was a substantial increase in publications in 2020 and 2021, succeeded by a marked decline in 2022 and 2023. Sichuan University and the International Journal of Molecular Sciences emerged as the most prolific contributors among organizations and relevant sources. Keyword analysis revealed a research emphasis on the COVID-19 pandemic and the SARS-CoV-2 virus since 2019. Thematic mapping categorized key terms into motor, primary, niche, and emerging themes. The emerging terms identified are viral immunogenicity, antibodies, and vaccines, which support the revelation that COVID-19 and related terms will be the most pertinent subjects in oral microbiome studies in the future. Factorial analysis delineated the relationships between topics and subtopics in this domain.

Bibliometric Analysis of Microtia-Related Publications From 2006 to 2020

OBJECTIVE

Microtia is a congenital auricular malformation with a hypoplastic external ear that ranges in severity from a slightly smaller auricle to complete the absence of the auricle. The present study was conducted to identify and analyze the characteristics of microtia-related articles published from 2006 to 2020 by using bibliometric analyses.

METHOD

Microtia-related studies published from 2006 to 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Keywords, first author, citations, date of publication, and publication journal were extracted and quantitatively analyzed using Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder software and the Bibliometric (https://bibliometric.com/app). VOSviewer was used to visualize research and form a network map on keywords and citations.

RESULTS

A total of 1031 articles from 2006 to 2020 were included. The number of articles showed an overall trend of growth over time. The United States and China are the top 2 countries in terms of the number of microtia-related articles. From the analysis of keyword clustering, keywords could be mainly divided into 4 clusters in the field of microtia research: surgery, tissue engineering, epidemiology, and rehabilitation including hearing-related treatments, evaluation of effects, and quality of life after surgery. The top 10 most frequently cited papers from 2006 to 2020 were also extracted and analyzed.

CONCLUSION

A bibliometric research of microtia-related articles from 2006 to 2020 was conducted. This study may be helpful to understand the current research status of microtia and find the research trends in this field, thus proposing future directions for microtia research.

Thyroid Nodules: Emerging Trends in Detection and Visualization based on Citespace

BACKGROUND

Thyroid nodule (TN) is a highly prevalent clinical endocrine disease. Many countries have formed guidelines on the prevention and treatment of TN based on extensive research. However, there is a scarcity of TN-related literature based on bibliometrics.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the scientific achievements and progress of TN research from a global perspective by investigating the literature for 20 years through bibliometrics.

METHODS

We searched the literature on TN in the core collection of the Web of Science database from 2002 to 2021 and used the Citespace software to analyze the co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence of countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and co-cited literature.

RESULTS

We retrieved 12319 documents related to TN. The literature on TN has been growing since 2002. The United States has contributed the largest proportion of TN papers (20.64%), followed by China, Italy, and South Korea. The United States ranked first in terms of centrality (0.38). Haugen BR, Gharib H, and Cibas ES are the top three most cited authors. The papers published in Thyroid were cited most frequently (7952 times). The most prominent keywords were management, cancer, fine needle aspiration, diagnosis, malignant tumor, thyroid cancer, ultrasound, biopsy, benign, surgery, ablation, and cytology. All keywords could be divided into three categories: diagnosis stratification, treatment, and cancer. As far as potential hot spots are concerned, the keywords that have recently burst strongly and are still continuing are: "Association Guideline" (2018-2021), "Radiofrequency Ablation" (2017-2021), "Classification" (2019-2021), and "Data System" (2017-2021).

CONCLUSION

Based on the current trends, the number of publications on TN will continue to increase. The United States is the most active contributor to research in this field. Previous literature focused on stratification, cancer, surgery, and ablation, and there were different opinions on the stratification of diagnosis. There were relatively few studies on pathogenesis and treatment using medicine. More focus will be placed on association guidelines, radiofrequency ablation, classification, and data system, which may be the next popular topics in TN research.

Effects of curcumin on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A scientific metrogy study

BACKGROUND

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases encountered in clinical practice. Curcumin can alleviate insulin resistance, inhibit oxidative stress response, reduce inflammation, reduce liver fat deposition, and effectively improve NAFLD through various modalities, inhibiting the progression into cirrhosis and fibrosis.

PURPOSE

To explore the current status, hot spots, and developing trends of curcumin in NAFLD treatment through quantitative scientific analysis to serve as a reference for subsequent studies.

STUDY DESIGN

A comprehensive analysis of the mechanism of action of curcumin in the treatment of NAFLD and methods to increase curcumin bioavailability using bibliometric analysis and literature review.

METHODS

This study used VOSviewer software to analyze the literature related to curcumin treatment of NAFLD in the Web of Science (WOS) core set database. A comprehensive and in-depth review was conducted based on the results of scientific econometric research and literature review.

RESULTS

The review observed that curcumin can activate various signaling pathways such as AMPK and NF-κB to inhibit oxidative stress and apoptosis, thereby reflecting its pharmacological effects: lowering lipid, anti-inflammatory, reducing insulin resistance, and anti-fibrosis. These mechanisms improve or even reverse the complex pathological features of lipid metabolism disorders associated with NAFLD. Curcumin also can potentially serve as a primary regulatory target for treating hepatic steatosis using gut microbiota. However, these pharmacological effects of curcumin were limited owing to its low bioavailability.

CONCLUSION

This review discusses NAFLD treatment with curcumin, analyzes the reasons for its low bioavailability, and introduces models for studying and methods for improving curcumin bioavailability. As research on NAFLD grows, future research should capture the trend of basic research, pay attention to clinical research, and continuously explore the therapeutic potential of curcumin.

Bibliometric analysis and visualization of research trends on HIV-1 capsid inhibitors (2000-2022)

Background: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has seriously endangered human life and health, the main pathogenic agent is human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has shown serious drug resistance and side effects, and the discovery of HIV-1 capsid inhibitors is an effective way to solve the problem. Recent studies have shown significant progress in the research of HIV-1 capsid inhibitors. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive overview of bibliometric analysis in this field. This study aimed to provide the research trends and hotspots of HIV-1 capsid inhibitors. Method: Publications related to HIV-1 capsid inhibitors from 2000 to 2022 were searched on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database and screened according to inclusion criteria. VOSviewer was conducted to evaluate the results. Results: 96 publications from 25 countries were finally included, and the number of annual publications related to HIV-1 capsid inhibitors showed an increasing trend. The United States was the most productive country with the most publication number, H-index, and total citation number, as well as the widest international cooperation. The most popular journal in this field was Journal of Virology. Drexel University was the most productive institution, and Simon Cocklin participated in the most publications. Keywords co-occurrence analysis exhibited that studying the molecular mechanism of capsid protein, discovering drug candidates, and improving antiretroviral therapy are the main and hot topics in this field. Conclusion: This is the first bibliometric study in the field of HIV-1 capsid inhibitors, which comprehensively analyzed the research trends and hotspots in this direction. This work is expected to provide the scientific community with new insights to promote the research of HIV-1 capsid inhibitors.

Research trends on nanomaterials in gastric cancer: a bibliometric analysis from 2004 to 2023

BACKGROUND

Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In recent years, an increasing number of studies aimed at designing and developing nanomaterials for use in diagnosing and treating gastric cancer have been conducted. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively assess the current status and trends of the research on the application of nanomaterials in gastric cancer through a bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Studies focusing on nanomaterials and gastric cancer were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and relevant articles were selected for inclusion in the study according to the inclusion criteria. Bibliometric and visual analysis of the included publications was performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace.

RESULTS

A total of 793 studies were included. An increase in annual publications was observed from 2004 to 2023. China, Iran and the USA were the dominant countries in this field, accounting for 66.1%, 11.5% and 7.2% of publications, respectively. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Cui DX were the most influential institution and author, respectively. The International Journal of Nanomedicine was the most prolific journal; Biomaterials was the most cited and most cocited journal. Nanomaterial-related drug delivery and anticancer mechanisms were found to be the most widely researched aspects, and green synthesis and anticancer mechanisms are recent research hotspots.

CONCLUSION

In this study, we summarized the characteristics of publications and identified the most influential countries, institutions, authors, journals, hot topics and trends regarding the application of nanomaterials in gastric cancer.

A bibliometric analysis of research on R-loop: Landscapes, highlights and trending topics

R-loop is a necessary intermediate in specific cellular processes. To profile the landscapes, highlights, and trending topics of R-loop, publications related to R-loop from 1976 to 2022 were downloaded and bibliometric analyses were performed by Bibliometrix in R and VOSviewer. 1428 documents (including 1092 articles and 336 reviews) were included. USA, United Kingdom, and China contributed more than one-third of the publications. The annual publication increased rapidly since 2010. The research trend of R-loop has evolved from the discovery of phenomena to the exploration of molecular mechanisms, from the elucidation of biological functions to the analysis of disease correlations. Ongoing roles of R-loop in DNA repair process was highlighted and further analyzed. This study may accelerate R-loop research by highlighting important researches, understanding the trending topic, and integrating with other areas.

Emerging trends and focus on the link between gut microbiota and type 1 diabetes: A bibliometric and visualization analysis

Objective

To conduct the first thorough bibliometric analysis to evaluate and quantify global research regarding to the gut microbiota and type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Methods

A literature search for research studies on gut microbiota and T1D was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database on 24 September 2022. VOSviewer software and the packages Bibliometrix R and ggplot used in RStudio were applied to perform the bibliometric and visualization analysis.

Results

A total of 639 publications was extracted using the terms "gut microbiota" and "type 1 diabetes" (and their synonyms in MeSH). Ultimately, 324 articles were included in the bibliometric analysis. The United States and European countries are the main contributors to this field, and the top 10 most influential institutions are all based in the United States, Finland and Denmark. The three most influential researchers in this field are Li Wen, Jorma Ilonen and Mikael Knip. Historical direct citation analysis showed the evolution of the most cited papers in the field of T1D and gut microbiota. Clustering analysis defined seven clusters, covering the current main topics in both basic and clinical research on T1D and gut microbiota. The most commonly found high-frequency keywords in the period from 2018 to 2021 were "metagenomics," "neutrophils" and "machine learning."

Conclusion

The application of multi-omics and machine learning approaches will be a necessary future step for better understanding gut microbiota in T1D. Finally, the future outlook for customized therapy toward reshaping gut microbiota of T1D patients remains promising.

A retrospective analysis of schistosomiasis related literature from 2011-2020: Focusing on the next decade

BACKGROUND

Schistosomiasis, an ancient and neglected tropical disease, which poses a huge threat to over 200 million people globally. It is necessary to have a general summary of schistosomiasis research after the new roadmap 2021-2030 issued by WHO. This study analyzes the current status of schistosomiasis research from the perspective of the One Health concept by analyzing important research literature published from 2011 to 2020, while further highlighting research priorities, difficulties, and research directions in order to propose suggestions for tropical disease studies research.

METHODS

Published literature related to schistosomiasis was searched from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Focusing on a visual analysis of the main research literature in the field of schistosomiasis, CiteSpace software was used to conduct co-occurrence analysis with keywords, countries, institutions, and authors. Moreover, clustering and burst analyses of keywords and co-citation analysis of authors, publications, and journals were performed.

RESULTS

A total of 6638 schistosomiasis-related articles were published from 2011 to 2020, all of which can be sourced from the WoSCC database. The publication of schistosomiasis research has remained stable over the past 10 years, and contains studies in the area of human epidemiology, animal surveillance and the environment. The top five high-frequency keywords included Schistosoma mansoni, schistosomiasis, infection, praziquantel, and Schistosoma japonicum. The keywords formed nine clusters, including praziquantel, epidemiology, Schistosoma japonicum, helminths, protein, diagnosis, schistosomiasis, response, and haematobium. In recent years, most research studies focused on the mechanism of liver fibrosis, eliminating schistosomiasis, controlling risk factors, and the relationship between schistosomiasis infection and host immunity. The most productive countries include the United States, China, and Brazil, and the most productive institutions are the University of Basel, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and the University of São Paulo. Highly productive authors include Jürg Utzinger and Donald P. McManus. At the time of writing, the author with the highest co-citation frequency (993 times) was Peter Hotez, and the journal with the highest co-citation frequency (3,720 times) was PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Human schistosomiasis, published by Colley et al. (2014), was the most frequently co-cited publication (494 times).

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides a preliminary description of the current status of schistosomiasis research and an initial exploration of future research directions. The One Health concept was applied in the field of schistosomiasis control, as confirmed by this bibliometric analysis. Our study provides guidance for the development of research on schistosomiasis and other neglected tropical diseases.

Research trends on the relationship between gut microbiota and colorectal cancer: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Colorectal cancer (CRC)is the third most common cancer in the world and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and over the past two decades, many of these researchers have provided a substantial amount of important information on the role of gut microbes in the development and progression of CRC. A causal relationship between the presence of specific microorganisms and CRC development has also been validated. Although a large number of papers related to this area have been published, no bibliometric study has been conducted to review the current state of research in this area and to highlight the research trends and hotspots in this area. This study aims to analyze the current status and future research trends of gut microbiota and CRC through bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Publications from 2001 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and screened according to inclusion criteria. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to visualize the research trends in this field, including the analysis of title, country, institution, author, number of publications, year of publication, number of citations, journal, and H-index.

Results

A total of 863 studies were eventually identified, and the articles retrieved were cited an average of 44.85 times each. The number of publications on this topic has been increased steadily since 2011. China and the USA have made the largest contribution in the field. FRONTIERS IN MICROBIOLOGY is the top productive journal with 26 papers, and Gut journal has the highest average citation (167.23). Shanghai Jiao Tong University is the most contributive institution. Professor Yu J, Sung, Joseph J. Y and Fang JY are the most productive authors in this field. Keyword co-occurrence analysis showed that the terms of "Gut Microbiota", "Colorectal Cancer", "Inflammation", "Probiotic" and "Fusobacterium Nucleatum" were the most frequent, which revealed the research hotpots and trends in this field.

Conclusions

There has been a growing number of publications over the past two decades according to the global trends. China and the USA still maintained the leading position in this field. However, collaboration between institutions needs to be strengthened. It's commended to pay attention to the latest hotspots, such as "F. nucleatum" and "probiotics". This bibliometric analysis evaluates the scope and trends of gut microbiota and CRC, providing a useful perspective on current research and future directions for studying the link between the gut microbiota and CRC.

Research trends in endoscopic applications in early gastric cancer: A bibliometric analysis of studies published from 2012 to 2022

Background

Endoscopy is the optimal method of diagnosing and treating early gastric cancer (EGC), and it is therefore important to keep up with the rapid development of endoscopic applications in EGC. This study utilized bibliometric analysis to describe the development, current research progress, hotspots, and emerging trends in this field.

Methods

We retrieved publications about endoscopic applications in EGC from 2012 to 2022 from Web of Science™ (Clarivate™, Philadelphia, PA, USA) Core Collection (WoSCC). We mainly used CiteSpace (version 6.1.R3) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) to perform the collaboration network analysis, co-cited analysis, co-occurrence analysis, cluster analysis, and burst detection.

Results

A total of 1,333 publications were included. Overall, both the number of publications and the average number of citations per document per year increased annually. Among the 52 countries/regions that were included, Japan contributed the most in terms of publications, citations, and H-index, followed by the Republic of Korea and China. The National Cancer Center, based in both Japan and the Republic of Korea, ranked first among institutions in terms of number of publications, citation impact, and the average number of citations. Yong Chan Lee was the most productive author, and Ichiro Oda had the highest citation impact. In terms of cited authors, Gotoda Takuji had both the highest citation impact and the highest centrality. Among journals, Surgical Endoscopy and Other Interventional Techniques had the most publications, and Gastric Cancer had the highest citation impact and H-index. Among all publications and cited references, a paper by Smyth E C et al., followed by one by Gotoda T et al., had the highest citation impact. Using keywords co-occurrence and cluster analysis, 1,652 author keywords were categorized into 26 clusters, and we then divided the clusters into six groups. The largest and newest clusters were endoscopic submucosal dissection and artificial intelligence (AI), respectively.

Conclusions

Over the last decade, research into endoscopic applications in EGC has gradually increased. Japan and the Republic of Korea have contributed the most, but research in this field in China, from an initially low base, is developing at a striking speed. However, a lack of collaboration among countries, institutions, and authors, is common, and this should be addressed in future. The main focus of research in this field (i.e., the largest cluster) is endoscopic submucosal dissection, and the topic at the frontier (i.e., the newest cluster) is AI. Future research should focus on the application of AI in endoscopy, and its implications for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of EGC.

Studies related to osteosarcoma and metabolism from 1990 to 2022: A visual analysis and bibliometric study

BACKGROUND

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor, its high incidence of metastasis and poor prognosis have led to a great deal of concern for osteosarcoma. In many cancer types, metabolic processes are important for tumor growth progression, so interfering with the metabolic processes of osteosarcoma may be a therapeutic option to stall osteosarcoma progression. A key mechanism of how metabolic processes contribute to the growth and survival of various cancers, including osteosarcoma, is their ability to support tumor cell metabolism. Research related to this field is a direction of great importance and potential. However, to our knowledge, no bibliometric studies related to this field have been published, and we will fill this research gap.

METHODS

Publications were retrieved on January 1, 2023 from the 1990-2022 Science Citation Index of the Web of Science Core Collection. The Bibliometrix package in R software, VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to analyze our research directions and to visualize global trends and hotspots in osteosarcoma and metabolism related research.

RESULTS

Based on the search strategy, 833 articles were finally filtered. In this area of research related to osteosarcoma metabolism, we found that China, the United States and Japan are the top 3 countries in terms of number of articles published, and the journals and institutions that have published the most research in this area are Journal of bone and mineral research, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In addition, Baldini, Nicola, Reddy, Gs and Avnet, Sofia are the top three authors in terms of number of articles published in studies related to this field. The most popular keywords related to the field in the last 30 years are "metabolism" and "expression", which will guide the possible future directions of the field.

CONCLUSION

We used Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and Citespace to visualize and bibliometrically analyze the current status and possible future hotspots of research in the field of osteosarcoma metabolism. Possible future hotspots in this field may focus on the related terms "metabolism", "expression", and "migraation".

The status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research: A global bibliometric and visualized analysis

BACKGROUND

Mitochondria are remarkably dynamic organelles encapsulated by bilayer membranes. The dynamic properties of mitochondria are critical for energy production.

AIMS

The aim of our study is to investigate the global status and trends of mitochondrial dynamics research and predict popular topics and directions in the field.

METHODS

Publications related to the studies of mitochondrial dynamics from 2002 to 2021 were retrieved from Web of Science database. A total of 4,576 publications were included. Bibliometric analysis was conducted by visualization of similarities viewer and GraphPadPrism 5 software.

RESULTS

There is an increasing trend of mitochondrial dynamics research during the last 20 years. The cumulative number of publications about mitochondrial dynamics research followed the logistic growth model [Formula: see text]. The USA made the highest contributions to the global research. The journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA)-Molecular Cell Research had the largest publication numbers. Case Western Reserve University is the most contributive institution. The main research orientation and funding agency were cell biology and HHS. All keywords related studies could be divided into three clusters: "Related disease research", "Mechanism research" and "Cell metabolism research".

CONCLUSIONS

Attention should be drawn to the latest popular research and more efforts will be put into mechanistic research, which may inspire new clinical treatments for the associated diseases.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment: A bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis

BACKGROUND

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has a negative effect on activities of daily living.

OBJECTIVE

Although a number of studies have been published on PSCI, no quantitative studies have yet been conducted.

METHOD

CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to quantitatively analyze PSCI to illustrate the research hotspots and trends in PSCI. All relevant publications were extracted from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) of the Web of Science (WoS).

RESULTS

A total of 6536 articles were included in this study. From 349 in 2010 to 942 in 2020, the number of publications increased dramatically. The USA maintained the top position worldwide and provided a vital influence. Harvard University was considered the leader in research collaboration among all institutions. Stroke was the most popular journal in this sector and Vincent Mok published the most articles in this area. We analyzed the keywords and identified five research hotspot clusters. By summarizing the literature on PSCI, we considered the publication information regarding different countries, institutions, authors and journals.

CONCLUSION

The mechanism of PSCI is an active hotspot. Cerebral vascular disease, especially white matter lesions, also received more attention.

A bibliometric analysis of autophagy in lung diseases from 2012 to 2021

Background

Autophagy refers to the process in which cells wrap their damaged organelles or unwanted proteins into a double-membrane structure and direct them to lysosomes for degradation. Autophagy can regulate many lung diseases such as pulmonary hypertension, acute lung injury, and lung cancer. However, few bibliometric studies on autophagy are available. The aim of the present study was to clarify the role of autophagy in lung diseases by bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Publications were retrieved from the 2012-2021 Science Citation Index Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection on 20 September 2022. Bibliometrix package in R software was used for data retrieval. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to visualize the research focus and trend regarding the effect of autophagy on lung disease.

Results

A total of 4,522 original articles and reviews on autophagy in lung diseases published between 2012 and 2021 were identified. China had the largest number of published papers and citations, whereas the United States (US) ranked first in the H-index and G-index. Moreover, cooperation network analysis showed close cooperation between the US, China, and some European countries, and the top 10 affiliates were all from these countries and regions. Bibliometric analysis showed that "autophagy" and "apoptosis" were the keywords with the highest frequency. During the past decade, most studies were concerned with basic research on pathways related to the regulatory role of autophagy in the inhibition and attenuation of lung diseases.

Conclusion

The study of autophagy in lung diseases is still in the development stage. The information published in these articles has helped researchers understand further the hot spots and development trends in the field more and learn about the collaboration network information regarding authors, countries, and institutions, as well as the paper citation correlation. More studies have been performed to gain deeper insights into the pathogenesis of autophagy by focusing on the links and effects between various diseases. More recently, research in this field has paid increasing attention to the function of autophagy in COVID-19-related lung diseases.

The top 100 cited articles on spontaneous coronary artery dissection: a bibliometric analysis

Aim: This study identifies the most cited papers on spontaneous coronary artery dissection and evaluates their focus and the characteristics of the current literature. Methods: The Web of Science database was queried for publications between 1971 and 2021. The articles were ranked from the most to the least citations, and each was reviewed by two authors. Results: The total citations ranged from 44 to 457, with a median (interquartile range) citation of 78.5 (60-140). Females were 28% of the first authors, about half the papers (52/100) were published in the last decade, most were observational studies (78/100) and the rest were nonoriginal studies. The impact factor of the journal weakly correlated with the number of citations (r [98] = 0.24; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Efforts are needed to encourage female authorship and increase the quality of articles in this subject area.

Brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders: A perspective from bibliometric and visual analysis

BACKGROUND

The Brain-Gut Axis, a bidirectional signaling pathway that connects the intestinal and central nervous systems, plays an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders. However, the overall research trends in this field are unclear. This study explored the patterns of research on the brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders from a bibliometric perspective.

METHODS

Relevant data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, with search terms on psychiatric disorders and the brain-gut axis. R (version 4.2.0), VOSviewer (version 1.6.17), CiteSpace software, and the online bibliometric platform were used in the data analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 2,298 articles published between 1993 and 2022 were identified, showing an increasing trend over time. China (1,859; 20.70%) was the country that contributed the most publications. The journal Nutrients (95; 4.13%) published the most publications. Cryan JF (153; H-index=73) and University College Cork (559; 22.54%) were the most influential author and the most productive institution, respectively. The high-frequency keywords were clustered into six themes, including neurodegenerative diseases, stress-related diseases, immune, brain behavior, depression, and probiotic-related topics; of which, depression (880; 2019), anxiety (207; 2018) and autism (191; 2019) were the most studied psychiatric disorders in the past 5 years. "Depressive symptom" (2019-2020) and "probiotic treatment" (2019-2020) were the main areas addressed in recent years.

CONCLUSION

Research on the brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders has attracted increasing attention in the past decade, with most publications originating from high-income level countries. This study provides a useful perspective on understanding the research trends, key hot topics, and research gaps in this expanding field.

Knowledge mapping of the links between the microbiota and allergic diseases: A bibliometric analysis (2002-2021)

BACKGROUND

In recent decades, dramatic changes in modern environmental exposures and lifestyles have resulted in a steep rise in the prevalence of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and food allergies. Evidence is mounting that the microbiota plays a crucial role in allergic disorder development and evolution. Therefore, a better understanding of allergic diseases within the context of the microbiota is urgently needed. This work aimed to comprehensively outline general characteristics, research hotspots, evolution routes, and emerging trends in this area.

METHODS

Relevant publications from January 2002 to December 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on 5 August 2022. Bibliometric and visual analyses were performed using CiteSpace; VOSviewer; an online bibliometric platform; and Microsoft Excel 2019.

RESULTS

In total, 2535 documents met the requirements. The annual number of publications has shown rapid growth in the last two decades. The USA, University of California System, and Isolauri E of the University of Turku were the most productive and influential country, institution, and author, respectively. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology was the most prolific and most cocited journal. High-frequency keywords included "gut microbiota", "asthma", "atopic dermatitis", "children", and "probiotics". Recent studies have focused on "atopic dermatitis", "skin", "asthma", and "probiotics", according to the cocitation analysis of references. Burst detection analysis of keywords showed that "community", "skin microbiome", "microbiome", "Staphylococcus aureus", and "chain fatty acid" were emerging research frontiers, which currently have ongoing bursts.

CONCLUSION

In the last 20 years, studies of the microbiota in allergic diseases have been flourishing, and the themes have been increasing in depth. These findings provide valuable references on the current research hotspots and gaps and development trends in the link between the microbiota and allergic diseases.

Research progress on the relationship between mitochondrial function and heart failure: A bibliometric study from 2002 to 2021

Heart failure is one of the major public health problems in the world. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the relationship between heart failure and mitochondrial function. In the past 2 decades, a growing number of research papers in this field have been published. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of the published literature on the relationship between MF and HF in the past 20 years by utilizing Microsoft Excel 2019, Biblio metric analysis platform, WoSCC database, VosViewer and Citespace. The results show that the papers have increased year by year and China and the United States are the leading countries in this field, as well as the countries with the most cooperation and exchanges. University of california system is the research institution with the greatest impacts on research results, and Yip H.K. is the author with more papers. The American Journal of Physiology-heart and Circulatory Physiology is probably the most popular magazine. At present, most of the published articles on mitochondria and HF are cited from internationally influential journals. The research focus includes oxidative stress, metabolic dysfunction, mitochondrial Ca²⁺ homeostasis imbalance, mitochondrial quality control and mitochondrial dysfunction mediated by inflammation in the pathogenesis of HF. Targeted regulating of mitochondria will be the keynote of future research on prevention and treatment of HF.

Research on major depression in China: A perspective from bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major psychiatric disorder with increasing research intensity. However, papers written in languages other than English are less accessible to international readers. This study examined the bibliometric features of English and Chinese language research papers about major depressive disorder in China.

METHODS

The Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were searched for eligible studies. Authorship collaboration networks and keyword co-occurrences were estimated and visualized.

RESULTS

There were 2,220 and 63,306 publications on MDD in the WoS and CNKI between 1990 and 2021, respectively. The number of papers increased annually during the period. For papers written in English, the Journal of Affective Disorders (201; 9.05 %) had the highest activity and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University had the most publications (232; 10.45 %). For papers in Chinese, the highest activity was with the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (1,025; 1.62 %) and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (1,098; 1.73 %). Xiang YT (68; 3.06 %) and Yuan YG (179; 0.28 %) were the most productive authors in the English and Chinese languages, respectively. Keyword analysis showed that English and Chinese publications differed in emphasis (English: related psychiatric conditions, study design, clinical aspects, and assessment instruments; Chinese: somatic comorbidities, antidepressants, related psychiatric conditions, treatment of depression, and electrophysiological).

CONCLUSIONS

The number of scientific papers on MDD increased yearly, and Chinese authors writing in English have an increasing influence. Except for a few authors, productivity and influence were dominated by national universities and specialized medical universities.

Bibliometric analysis: Research trends of acupuncture treatment to cognitive impairment in recent 15 years

Objectives

Acupuncture therapy has been used for cognitive impairment-related diseases, however, there are still few studies on the overall trend of acupuncture therapy on cognitive impairment based on bibliometric analysis. The purpose of this study was to explore the research trend of the impact of acupuncture on cognitive impairment in the past 15 years, analyze the research trends and hotspots, and provide new ideas and theoretical basis for future research directions.

Methods

From the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), the relevant literature on the treatment of cognitive impairment with acupuncture from 2007 to 2022 was retrieved. Then, based on the CiteSpace and VOSviewer software of the Java platform, the cooperation between countries and institutions in this field, the co-citation of journals and documents, and the cooperation between authors and authors, etc. were analyzed. In addition, the co-occurrence and burst analysis of keywords are also carried out, and a visual knowledge map is drawn.

Results

As of August 08, 2022, a total of 394 records related to the treatment of cognitive impairment with acupuncture were identified. The analysis results show: The number and rate of annual publications have steadily increased, with some fluctuations from year to year. The countries that contribute the most to this field are China and the USA. Among them, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Capital Medical University are tied for first place in terms of the number of published papers. Tao Jing is the most prolific author and the number one cited author.

Conclusions

The number of publications on acupuncture for cognitive impairment is expected to increase rapidly in future research, suggesting a bright future for the field. Future research hotspots will focus on pain, injury, protocol, diagnosis, guidelines, etc. It is also necessary to strengthen cross-regional and cross-country cooperation among various academic groups.

Research trends and hotspot analysis of age-related hearing loss from a bibliographic perspective

Background

Up-to-date information about the trends of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and how this varies between countries is essential to plan for an adequate health-system response. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the research hotpots and trends in ARHL and to provide the basis and direction for future research.

Materials and methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched and screened according to the inclusion criteria during 2002–2021. Bibliometric analyses were conducted by CiteSpace (Chaomei Chen, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, United States) software and VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands) software.

Results

The query identified 1,496 publications, which showed a growth trend of this filed. These publications were from 62 countries, the United States of America (United States) showed its tremendous impact on this field in publication outputs, total citations, and international collaborations, China following in second. The Journal of Hearing Research was the most productive journal. Weijia Kong published the most papers, and the most productive institution was Washington University. The keyword “presbycusis” ranked first in research frontiers and appeared earlier, and the keywords “age-related hearing loss,” “risk,” “dementia,” “auditory cortex,” “association,” and “decline” began to appear in recent years.

Conclusion

The annual number of publications has grown rapidly in the past two decades and will continue to grow. Epidemiological investigation and laboratory research are lasting hot spots, besides future research will focus on the association between ARHL and cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A bibliometric analysis of autophagy in atherosclerosis from 2012 to 2021

Background: Regulation of autophagy affects the progression of atherosclerosis. In recent years, research on autophagy in atherosclerosis has been widely concerned. However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this field.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the general situation, hot spots, and trends of the research in this field through bibliometric analysis.

Methods: Articles related to autophagy in atherosclerosis from 2012 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for data analysis and visualization of countries, institutions, authors, keywords, journals, and citations.

Results: A total of 988 articles were obtained in the last 10 years. The number of publications and citations increased rapidly from 2012 to 2021, especially after 2019. The most productive countries, institutions, journals, and authors were the People’s Republic of China, Shandong University, Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and Wim Martinet, respectively. The primary keywords were “oxidative stress,” “apoptosis,” “activated protein kinase,” and “inflammation.” The burst detection analysis of keywords found that “SIRT1” and “long non-coding RNA” might be regarded as the focus of future research.

Conclusion: This is the first bibliometric analysis of autophagy in atherosclerosis, which reports the hot spots and emerging trends. The interaction between oxidative stress and autophagy, programmed cell death, and activated protein kinases are considered to be the current research priorities. Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic target for the intervention of atherosclerosis by regulating autophagy will become an emerging research direction.

Global research trend of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma from 2012 to 2022: a bibliometric analysis

Background

Esophageal cancer is currently a worldwide health problem. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most common pathological type of esophageal cancer, and its treatment methods and therapeutic effects are relatively limited, so it also requires the unremitting efforts of basic and clinical researchers to overcome difficulties. Bibliometric analysis can help sort out global research trends and hotspots, but no bibliometric analysis of ESCC has been reported. Therefore, we performed this study to analyze the global trends and potential hotspots of ESCC to indicate future research directions.

Methods

The articles related to ESCC research were collected from the WoS Core Collection SCI-EXPANDED database from 2012 to 2022. The article information was analyzed by BiblioShiny and VOSviewer. Results were presented as bar and network visualization to describe the current trend of ESCC research. This was a retrospective study evaluating data that is publicly available online and at libraries and institutional review board approval, as such, was not demanded.

Results

The global publication trend illustrated a strong growth in the ESCC research field (annual growth rate of 11.4%) and the citation trend increased from an average of 2.98 citations per article per year in 2012 to an average of 3.84 citations per article per year in 2019. With the corresponding author’s country, China contributed the largest number (5,063 articles). The scholars from China and USA had the most collaboration (427 times). China had the largest number of institutions conducting ESCC research. Oncotarget, Oncology Letters, and Annals of Surgical Oncology published the most articles, while Cancer Research, International Journal of Cancer, and Journal of Clinical Oncology had the most local citations. Furthermore, the clinical research hotspots involved in the treatment of ESCC and the basic research hotspots involved in tumor malignant phenotype have received the most attention in recent years.

Conclusion

Our study demonstrated that the research of ESCC has developed rapidly in recent years, and the academic institutions in China have played a decisive role in this field. The global research purpose is to find effective therapies against ESCC, so some emerging hotspots related to ESCC treatment, such as endoscopic therapy, chemoradiotherapy, immunotherapy, tumor microenvironment, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition will receive more attention and develop rapidly in the future.

Cardiovascular and cancer risk factors analysis for 2001–2020 from the global research output and European newspapers

Cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are now two of the leading components of the global burden of disease, especially in high- and upper-middle-income countries. Causes of the diseases that are amenable to intervention are multiple: tobacco control closely followed by obesity treatment, including promotion of a healthy diet and physical exercise, remain the global priorities. We interrogated the Web of Science (WoS) from 2001 to 2020 to determine the numbers of papers describing research into 14 different possible risk factors causing the two diseases. These ranged in relative importance from tobacco and being overweight to the consumption of excessively hot drinks (linked to oesophageal cancer), pollution (linked to lung cancer particularly) and also non-interventional genetic risks. The risks varied between different continental regions, and obesity has increased as a risk factor for CVD in some of these regions. Because many of these factors are subject to human behavioural choices, we also investigated how such research was being presented to the European public through newspaper reportage. About 40% of the factors that influence the cancer burden can be attributed to particular causes, and more than 85% of those factors influencing CVD can also be so attributed. They are led by tobacco use as a risk factor for cancer, but this is slowly declining in most high-income settings. For CVD, the major risks are metabolic, such as high systolic blood pressure and high body-mass index, but also from tobacco use. Research outputs on some of these different factors in the continental regions correlated positively with their influence on the disease burdens. The selection of European newspaper stories was biased towards those risk factors that could be considered as being under the control of their readers. Reports of research in the mass media have an important role in the control of both cancer and CVD, and should be regarded by public health authorities as a useful means to promulgate health education. This paper is based on one presented at the ISSI conference in Leuven in July 2021 (Pallari and Lewison, in: Glänzel et al (eds) Proceedings of the 18th international conference on scientometrics and informetrics, 2021), but has been extended to cover CVD as well as cancer. The geographical analysis of risk factors and research publications has also been modified.

Research trends of the neuroimaging in aphasia: A bibliometric analysis and visualization analysis from 2004 to 2021

Objectives

To review the current research status of the neuroimaging of aphasia, and reveal the hotspots and frontiers of research in this field.

Methods

We searched articles related to the neuroimaging research on aphasia since Web of Science (WOS) database construction and extracted the data. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for the country/institution analysis, journal analysis, discipline analysis, burst keyword analysis and cited-reference cluster analysis.

Results

Of the studies retrieved from WOS, 2922 studies that related to the neuroimaging of aphasia were screened and finally included 2799 articles for research. The United States of America and University of California San Francisco were the main countries and institutions in this field. Brain had the highest impact factor in both published and cited journals. Through the discipline and topic analysis of this field, the most common category was Neurosciences and Neurology. The keyword with the strongest citation strength was “functional connectivity,” and the recent burst keywords were “functional connectivity” and “network.” The co-citation network showed seven clusters greater than 100. Among the top 5 clusters, the most recently formed cluster, Cluster #2 (progressive supranuclear palsy), had an average year of 2017. The literature in the top 5 clusters mainly focused on 3 aspects, specifically, the discovery of language processing models, injury and recovery mechanisms of post-stroke aphasia (PSA), and diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) variants.

Conclusion

The results of this bibliometric study revealed the following three research hotspots in the neuroimaging of aphasia: clarifying the connotation of the most recognized language processing model, the dual-stream model, exploring the injury mechanism based on the dual-stream model and the recovery mechanism involving the left and right hemispheres of PSA, and determining the diagnostic criteria for PPA variants. A major research trend is to combine new neuroimaging technology, such as PET tracer technology, to realize the visual presentation of disease-specific proteins to improve the pathological diagnostic criteria of PPA variants. Accordingly, a visualized analysis of literature that uses CiteSpace provides a more rapid, repeatable and flexible method, which is more conducive to capturing research hotspots and emerging trends.

A VOSviewer-Based Bibliometric Analysis of Prescription Refills

Purpose

Prescription refills are long-term prescriptions for chronic patients in stable status, which varies from country to country. A well-established prescription refill system is beneficial for chronic patients’ medication management and facilitates the efficacy of clinical care. Therefore, we carried out a bibliometric analysis to examine the development of this field.

Summary

Publications on prescription refills from 1970 to 2021 were collected in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Search strategy TS = “prescri* refill*” OR “medi* refill*” OR “repeat prescri*” OR “repeat dispens*” OR TI = refill* was used for search. VOSviewer was applied to visualize the bibliometric analysis. A total of 319 publications were found in WoSCC. Study attention on prescription refills has shown a steady rise but is still low in recent years. The United States was the most productive country, which had the highest total citations, average citations per publication, and the highest H-index, and participated in international collaboration most frequently. The University of California system was the most productive institution. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was the institution with the most citations, most average citation, and highest H-index. Sundell was the most productive author, and Steiner J. F. was the most influential author. “Adherence,” “medication,” and “therapy” were the most prominent keywords.

Conclusion

Publications on prescription refills have increased rapidly and continue to grow. The United States had the leading position in the area. It is recommended to pay closer attention to the latest hotspots, such as “Opioids,” “Surgery,” “Differentiated care,” and “HIV.”

The global scientific publications on gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes; a bibliometric, Scientometric, and descriptive analysis

Background

Modifying gut dysbiosis has achieved great success in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and also T2DM affected the gut microbial composition.

Objectives

To determine the research trend of scientific publications on the relationship between gut microbiota and T2DM through a bibliometric and descriptive approach.

Method

We included originals and reviews related to both topics of gut microbiota and T2DM through searching in Scopus up to 31 December 2019 and then characterized their bibliometric profiles including the number of publications, citations, institutions, journals, countries, and the collaboration network of authors, countries, terms and keywords. Moreover, we performed a descriptive evaluation of the clinical trials based on their intervention type and its influence on gut dysbiosis.

Results

We achieved 877 articles (436 originals and 441 reviews) according to our inclusion criteria. The annual publications were constantly increased over time and reached 220 publications in 2019. Out of 436 original articles, 231 animal studies and 174 human studies were found. The majority of human studies were clinical trials (n = 77) investigating the influence of drugs (n = 21), regimens (n = 21), pre/pro/symbiotic (n = 19), surgeries (n = 15), or both drug and regimen (n = 1) on gut dysbiosis. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and metformin were assessed the most in these trials. Obesity side by side T2DM has been assessed in this area of literature based on term and keyword analyses showing their possible similar pathways mediated by gut microbiota.

Conclusion

The exponentially growing documents on gut microbiota and T2DM had been published during the last decade and revealed gut microbiota alteration mediated antidiabetic effect of many interventions. Thus, we suggest other researchers to consider this pathway in efficacy assessment of therapeutic modalities and to find the optimal composition of gut microbiota that guarantees healthy insulin sensitivity.

Trends and Developments in the Detection of Pathogens in Central Nervous System Infections: A Bibliometric Study

Introduction

Rapid, sensitive, and specific laboratory assays are critical for the diagnosis and management of central nervous system (CNS) infections. The purpose of this study is to explore the intellectual landscape of research investigating methods for the detection of pathogens in patients with CNS infections and to identify the development trends and research frontier in this field.

Methods

A bibliometric study is conducted by analyzing literature retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection Database for the years 2000 to 2021. CiteSpace software is used for bibliometric analysis and network visualization, including co-citation analysis of references, co-occurrence analysis of keywords, and cooperation network analysis of authors, institutions, and countries/regions.

Results

A total of 2,282 publications are eventually screened, with an upward trend in the number of publications per year. The majority of papers are attributed to the disciplines of MICROBIOLOGY, INFECTIOUS DISEASES, IMMUNOLOGY, NEUROSCIENCES & NEUROLOGY, and VIROLOGY. The co-citation analysis of references shows that recent research has focused on the largest cluster “metagenomic next-generation sequencing”; the results of the analysis of the highest-cited publications and the citation burst of publications reveal that there is a strong interest stimulated in metagenomic next-generation sequencing. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords indicates that “infection”, “pathogen”, “diagnosis”, “gene”, “virus”, “polymerase chain reaction”, “cerebrospinal fluid”, “epidemiology”, and “metagenomic next-generation sequencing” are the main research priorities in the field of pathogen detection for CNS infections, and the keyword with the highest strength of burst is “metagenomic next-generation sequencing”. Collaborative network analysis reveals that the USA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of USA, and XIN WANG and JENNIFER DIEN BARD are the most influential country, institution, and researchers, respectively.

Conclusions

Exploring more advanced laboratory assays to improve the diagnostic accuracy of pathogens is essential for CNS infection research. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing is emerging as a novel useful unbiased approach for diagnosing infectious diseases of the CNS.

Bibliometric analysis of N6-methyladenosine in cancer: landscapes, highlights and trending topics

Background: N6-methyladenosine (m⁶A) is crucial in cancer and is being intensively studied. Aim: This bibliometric analysis seeks a broad picture of the role of m⁶A in cancer to guide and broaden future research. Methods: Publications were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed from 2000 to 2021, with keywords 'm⁶A' and 'cancer', and analyzed in biblioshiny and VOSviewer. Results: A total of 1013 documents were included, and China and the USA were the top countries with close collaboration. Mechanisms and predictive biomarkers of m⁶A regulator genes were highlighted. Cross-integration of m⁶A and other research hot spots, including 'immunotherapy', 'hypoxia' and 'polymorphism', were frontiers of m⁶A in cancer. Conclusion: This bibliometric study offered an updated perspective on m⁶A in cancer.

Global Research Trends in Pediatric COVID-19: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in 2019 and has since caused a global pandemic. Since its emergence, COVID-19 has hugely impacted healthcare, including pediatrics. This study aimed to explore the current status and hotspots of pediatric COVID-19 research using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

The Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science core collection database was searched for articles on pediatric COVID-19 to identify original articles that met the criteria. The retrieval period ranged from the creation of the database to September 20, 2021. A total of 3,561 original articles written in English were selected to obtain data, such as author names, titles, source publications, number of citations, author affiliations, and countries where the studies were conducted. Microsoft Excel (Microsoft, Redmond, WA) was used to create charts related to countries, authors, and institutions. VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, The Netherlands) was used to create visual network diagrams of keyword, author, and country co-occurrence.

Results

We screened 3,561 publications with a total citation frequency of 30,528. The United States had the most published articles (1188 articles) and contributed the most with author co-occurrences. The author with the most published articles was Villani from the University of Padua, Italy. He also contributed the most co-authored articles. The most productive institution was Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. The institution with the most frequently cited published articles was Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The United States cooperated most with other countries. Research hotspots were divided into two clusters: social research and clinical research. Besides COVID-19 and children, the most frequent keywords were pandemic (251 times), mental health (187 times), health (172 times), impact (148 times), and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) (144 times).

Conclusion

Pediatric COVID-19 has attracted considerable attention worldwide, leading to a considerable number of articles published over the past 2 years. The United States, China, and Italy have leading roles in pediatric COVID-19 research. The new research hotspot is gradually shifting from COVID-19 and its related clinical studies to studies of its psychological and social impacts on children.

Global research trends on the links between the gut microbiome and cancer: a visualization analysis

BACKGROUND

Significant links between the microbiota and human health have emerged in the last 20 years. A correlation has recently been demonstrated between changes in the gut microbiota and the development of cancer. This study aimed to use bibliometric analysis of the published gut microbiome and cancer literature to present the research status and summarize the hotspots for frontier studies.

METHODS

A literature search for research on the gut microbiome and cancer research from 2001 to 2020 was conducted using the Scopus database on 20 March 2021. VOSviewer software (version 1.6.16) was used to perform the visualization analysis.

RESULTS

From 2001 to 2020, a total of 2061 publications were retrieved. Annual publication output grew from 10 in 2001 to 486 in 2020. The USA had the largest number of publications, making the largest contribution to the field (n  = 566, 27.46%). Before 2016, most studies focused on the 'effect of probiotics on cancer'. The latest trends showed that 'microbiota composition and gene expression' and 'host-microbiome interaction in cancer immunotherapy' would be more concerned more widely in the future.

CONCLUSIONS

Research on 'microbiota composition and gene expression' and 'host-microbiome interaction in cancer immunotherapy' will continue to be the hotspot. Therefore, this study provides the trend and characteristics of the literature on the gut microbiota and cancer literature, which provided a useful bibliometric analysis for researchers to conduct further research.

Global trends of indocyanine green fluorescence navigation in laparoscopic cholecystectomy: bibliometrics and knowledge atlas analysis

BACKGROUND

Indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography is a new type of cholangiography that has emerged in recent years. It has many advantages, such as simplicity, safety, and efficiency, and is expected to become a routine procedure for intraoperative cholangiography in the future. However, there is no bibliometric analysis of horizontal generalization in this field. Therefore, this study aims to assess the current research status and developmental trends in this field from a global perspective and to help guide the focus of future research.

METHODS

This study was conducted by retrieving the literature related to ICG fluorescence cholangiography published in English from 2000 to 2021 from Web of Science. The Histcite. Pro tool was used to analyze the bibliometric indicators, and VOSviewer was used to visualize the research trends and hotspots in this field.

RESULTS

192 related studies were finally included. For the past 20 years, the number of related publications in this field have increased yearly, with 2010 being a breakthrough point for research in this field. Research has developed rapidly since 2013 and may continue to expand in the next several years. The USA and Japan play leading roles in this field. "SURG ENDOSC", "SURG INNOV", and "J LAPAROENDOSC ADV S" are core journals that publish high-quality literature and the latest developments in this field. Some authors who have a large number of high-quality publications include Ishizawa T and Kokudo N. The current research hotspots in this field are focused on exploring the factors that affect ICG cholangiography and optimization measures.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, the number of documents related to ICG fluorescence cholangiography is growing rapidly, with the USA and Japan being influential countries and China being one of the major producers of these documents. The optimization of this new technology will affect key developments in future research.

Research Hotspots and Trends in Music Therapy Intervention for Patients With Dementia: A Bibliometrics and Visual Analysis of Papers Published From 2010 to 2021

BACKGROUND

As a serious public health problem, dementia has placed a heavy burden on society and families. Evidence suggests that the use of music therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention has certain advantages with respect to reducing the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and improving the cognition and mental status of dementia patients. However, research trends and hotspots regarding music therapy intervention for dementia analysis have not been systematically studied via bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for texts published between January 1, 2010, and October 31, 2021, and visualized country, institution, journal, keyword co-occurrence, keyword emergence and keyword clustering.

RESULTS

A total of 217 articles from the WoSCC database were analyzed. In this research field, the annual number of publications has generally shown a slowly increasing trend, and the United States has the most publications and the most frequent cooperation among countries. University College London (UCL) has the most extensive influence among research institutions. Among articles, those published in the JOURNAL OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE were the most numerous, with 20 such articles being published, accounting for 9.22% (20/217) of the total. Comprehensive analysis of five clusters via biclustering shows that the research hotspots in this field during the past 11 years have mainly focused on the autobiographical memory, cognitive function, mental state and BPSD of dementia patients.

CONCLUSION

This study conducted a bibliometric and visual analysis of relevant studies concerning music therapy intervention for dementia patients. Psychological problems faced by dementia patients and the topics of quality of life, individualized music therapy, the mental state of caregivers and other related topics may be important research directions in the future. Therefore, the question of how to develop standardized research protocols and identify unified efficacy evaluation indicators should be a focus of and difficulty for future research.

Berberine Alleviates Gastroesophageal Reflux-Induced Airway Hyperresponsiveness in a Transient Receptor Potential A1-Dependent Manner

BACKGROUND

To investigate the beneficial effect of berberine on gastroesophageal reflux-induced airway hyperresponsiveness (GERAHR) and explore the underlying mechanism.

METHODS

Coword cluster analysis and strategic coordinates were used to identify hotspots for GERAHR research, and an online tool (STRING, https://string-db.org/) was used to predict the potential relationships between proteins. Guinea pigs with chemically induced GERAHR received PBS or different berberine-based treatments to evaluate the therapeutic effect of berberine and characterize the underlying mechanism. Airway responsiveness was assessed using a plethysmography system, and protein expression was evaluated by western blotting, immunohistochemical staining, and quantitative PCR analysis.

RESULTS

Bioinformatics analyses revealed that TRP channels are hotspots of GERAHR research, and TRPA1 is related to the proinflammatory neuropeptide substance P (SP). Berberine, especially at the middle dose tested (MB, 150 mg/kg), significantly improved lung function, suppressed inflammatory cell infiltration, and protected inflammation-driven tissue damage in the lung, trachea, esophagus, and nerve tissues in GERAHR guinea pigs. MB reduced the expression of TRPA1, SP, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in evaluated organs and tissues. Meanwhile, the MB-mediated protective effects were attenuated by simultaneous TRPA1 activation.

CONCLUSIONS

Mechanistically, berberine was found to suppress GERAHR-induced upregulation of TRPA1, SP, and TNF-α in many tissues. Our study has highlighted the potential therapeutic value of berberine for the treatment of GERAHR.

Bibliometric landscape of the researches on protein corona of nanoparticles

Unclear biological fate hampers the clinical translation of nanoparticles for biomedical uses. In recent years, it is documented that the formation of protein corona upon nanoparticles is a critical factor leading to the ambiguous biological fate. Efforts have been made to explore the protein corona forming behaviors on nanoparticles, and rearrangement of the relevant studies will help to understand the current trend of such a topic. In this work, the publications about protein corona of nanoparticles in Science Citation Index Expanded database of Web of Science from 2007 to 2020 (1417 in total) were analyzed in detail, and the bibliometrics landscape of them was showcased. The basic bibliometrics characteristics were summarized to provide an overall understanding. Citation analysis was performed to scrutinize the peer interests of these papers. The research hotspots in the field were evaluated, based on which some feasible topics for future studies were proposed. In general, the results demonstrated that protein corona of nanoparticles was a prospective research area, and had attracted global research interests. It was believed that this work could comprehensively highlight the bibliometrics landscape, inspire further exploitation on protein corona of nanoparticles, and ultimately promote the clinical translation of nanoparticles.

Research Trends on Clinical Helicobacter pylori Eradication: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1983 to 2020

BACKGROUND

Numerous studies related to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication have been published since the discovery of H. pylori. This study aimed to use a quantitative method to assess the development of this field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a search of related articles from Web of Science published in 1983-2020 using a combination of the search terms "H. pylori" and "eradication". Eligible studies were included after a two-stage screening process, and the following data were extracted: title, author, institution, country, study type, sample size, eradication regimen, publication year, number of citations, journal, and H-index.

RESULTS

A total of 1402 studies were finally identified. The results showed that the period from 1994-2003 was the most influential period in this field. Italy and the USA were dominant countries in this field, while China's publication number increased sharply in the last ten years. Baylor College of Medicine was the most influential institution. Alimentary Pharmacology Therapeutics was the most productive journal. The effects of H. pylori eradication on peptic ulcers and gastric cancer and H. pylori eradication therapy were the most cited topics in this field. After the publish of Maastricht/Florence Ⅳ guideline, the research of quadruple therapy was more than triple therapy. Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy became the most focused regimen after Maastricht/Florence Ⅴ guideline.

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, we summarized the characteristics of the publications; identified the most influential countries, institutions, journals; identified the popular research topics and eradication regimen of clinical H. pylori eradication.

Poor oral hygiene behavior is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer: A population-based case-control study in China

BACKGROUND

Poor oral health may be a significant risk factor for gastric cancer (GC); however, previous results are not consistent. Here, we investigated the effect of oral health on GC and effect modification by other factors.

METHODS

We conducted a population-based case-control study in Taixing, China. Participants aged between 40 and 85 years and who had lived in Taixing for at least 5 years were included. The GC cases were confirmed by endoscopy and pathological diagnosis, and the controls were randomly selected using the frequency-matching method. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to derive odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of oral health for GC risk after adjusting for confounders and risk factors.

RESULTS

Overall, 901 GC cases and 1972 controls were included. Tooth loss was not significantly associated with an increased risk of GC (yes vs. no, OR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.88 to 1.33). Compared with toothbrushing at least twice per day, toothbrushing once per day or less was associated with an increased risk of GC (OR = 2.39, 95% CI 1.94 to 2.94), and was more pronounced in esophagogastric junction cancer and intestinal-type GC. There was no significant interaction between the indicators of oral health and age, sex, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, and Helicobacter pylori seropositivity.

CONCLUSION

Poor oral hygiene behavior is associated with an increased risk of GC, and this positive association is consistent across all GC subgroups classified by anatomy and histology. Further studies are needed to explore the possible mechanisms behind this association.

Complication and Sequelae of COVID-19: What Should We Pay Attention to in the Post-Epidemic Era

COVID-19 is widespread worldwide and seriously affects the daily life and health of humans. Countries around the world are taking necessary measures to curb the spread. However, COVID-19 patients often have at least one organ complication and sequelae in addition to respiratory symptoms. Controlling the epidemic is only a phased victory, and the complication and sequelae of COVID-19 will need more attention in the post-epidemic era. We collected general information from over 1000 articles published in 2020 after the COVID-19 outbreak and systematically analyzed the complication and sequelae associated with eight major systems in COVID-19 patients caused by ACE2 intervention in the RAS regulatory axis. The autoimmune response induced by 2019-nCoV attacks and damages the normal tissues and organs of the body. Our research will help medical workers worldwide address COVID-19 complication and sequelae.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Exosomes in Cardiovascular Diseases From 2001 to 2021

Background: Exosomes in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become an active research field with substantial value and potential. Nevertheless, there are few bibliometric studies in this field. We aimed to visualize the research hotspots and trends of exosomes in CVDs using a bibliometric analysis to help understand the future development of basic and clinical research.

Methods: The articles and reviews regarding exosomes in the CVDs were culled from the Web of Science Core Collection, and knowledge maps were generated using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software.

Results: A total of 1,039 articles were included. The number of exosome articles in the CVDs increased yearly. These publications came from 60 countries/regions, led by the US and China. The primary research institutions were Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Nanjing Medical University. Circulation Research was the journal and co-cited journal with the most studies. We identified 473 authors among which Lucio Barile had the most significant number of articles and Thery C was co-cited most often. After analysis, the most common keywords are myocardium infarction, microRNA and mesenchymal stem cells. Ischemic heart disease, pathogenesis, regeneration, stem cells, targeted therapy, biomarkers, cardiac protection, and others are current and developing areas of study.

Conclusion: We identified the research hotspots and trends of exosomes in CVDs using bibliometric and visual methods. Research on exosomes is flourishing in the cardiovascular medicine. Regenerative medicine, exosome engineering, delivery vehicles, and biomarkers will likely become the focus of future research.

Comprehensive Bibliometric Analysis of the Kynurenine Pathway in Mood Disorders: Focus on Gut Microbiota Research

Background: Emerging evidence implicates the dysregulated kynurenine pathway (KP), an immune-inflammatory pathway, in the pathophysiology of mood disorders (MD), including depression and bipolar disorder characterized by a low-grade chronic pro-inflammatory state. The metabolites of the KP, an important part of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, serve as immune system modulators linking the gut microbiota (GM) with the host central nervous system.

Aim: This bibliometric analysis aimed to provide a first glimpse into the KP in MD, with a focus on GM research in this field, to guide future research and promote the development of this field.

Methods: Publications relating to the KP in MD between the years 2000 and 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), and analyzed in CiteSpace (5.7 R5W), biblioshiny (using R-Studio), and VOSviewer (1.6.16).

Results: In total, 1,064 and 948 documents were extracted from the Scopus and WoSCC databases, respectively. The publications have shown rapid growth since 2006, partly owing to the largest research hotspot appearing since then, “quinolinic acid.” All the top five most relevant journals were in the neuropsychiatry field, such as Brain Behavior and Immunity. The United States and Innsbruck Medical University were the most influential country and institute, respectively. Journal co-citation analysis showed a strong tendency toward co-citation of research in the psychiatry field. Reference co-citation analysis revealed that the top four most important research focuses were “kynurenine pathway,” “psychoneuroimmunology,” “indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase,” and “proinflammatory cytokines,” and the most recent focus was “gut-brain axis,” thus indicating the role of the KP in bridging the GM and the host immune system, and together reflecting the field’s research foundations. Overlap analysis between the thematic map of keywords and the keyword burst analysis revealed that the topics “Alzheimer’s disease,” “prefrontal cortex,” and “acid,” were research frontiers.

Conclusion: This comprehensive bibliometric study provides an updated perspective on research associated with the KP in MD, with a focus on the current status of GM research in this field. This perspective may benefit researchers in choosing suitable journals and collaborators, and aid in the further understanding of the field’s hotspots and frontiers, thus facilitating future research.
