Abstract
Significant advances in bionic prosthetics have occurred in the past two decades. The field's rapid expansion has yielded many exciting technologies that can enhance the physical, functional, and cognitive integration of a prosthetic limb with a human. We review advances in the engineering of prosthetic devices and their interfaces with the human nervous system, as well as various surgical techniques for altering human neuromusculoskeletal systems for seamless human-prosthesis integration. We discuss significant advancements in research and clinical translation, focusing on upper limbprosthetics since they heavily rely on user intent for daily operation, although many discussed technologies have been extended to lower limb prostheses as well. In addition, our review emphasizes the roles of advanced prosthetics technologies in complex interactions with humans and the technology readiness levels (TRLs) of individual research advances. Finally, we discuss current gaps and controversies in the field and point out future research directions, guided by TRLs.

Abstract
Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has shown promise as both a clinical therapeutic tool and research aid in the study of nervous system function. However, available clinical paddles are limited to using a small number of contacts due to the burden of wires necessary to connect each contact to the therapeutic device. Here, we introduce for the first time the integration of a hermetic active electronic multiplexer onto the electrode paddle array itself, removing this interconnect limitation. We evaluated the chronic implantation of an active electronic 60-contact paddle (the HD64) on the lumbosacral spinal cord of two sheep. The HD64 was implanted for 13 months and 15 months, with no device-related malfunctions or adverse events. We identified increased selectivity in EES-evoked motor responses using dense stimulating bipoles. Further, we found that dense recording bipoles decreased the spatial correlation between channels during recordings. Finally, spatial electrode encoding enabled a neural network to accurately perform EES parameter inference for unseen stimulation electrodes, reducing training data requirements. A high-density EES paddle, containing active electronics safely integrated into neural interfaces, opens new avenues for the study of nervous system function and new therapies to treat neural injury and dysfunction.

Abstract
Bioelectricity plays a crucial role in organisms, being closely connected to neural activity and physiological processes. Disruptions in the nervous system can lead to chaotic ionic currents at the injured site, causing disturbances in the local cellular microenvironment, impairing biological pathways, and resulting in a loss of neural functions. Electromagnetic stimulation has the ability to generate internal currents, which can be utilized to counter tissue damage and aid in the restoration of movement in paralyzed limbs. By incorporating implanted materials, electromagnetic stimulation can be targeted more accurately, thereby significantly improving the effectiveness and safety of such interventions. Currently, there have been significant advancements in the development of numerous promising electromagnetic stimulation strategies with diverse materials. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental theories, neural stimulation modulating materials, material application strategies, and pre-clinical therapeutic effects associated with electromagnetic stimulation for neural repair. It offers a thorough analysis of current techniques that employ materials to enhance electromagnetic stimulation, as well as potential therapeutic strategies for future applications.

Abstract
A long-standing engineering ambition has been to design anthropomorphic bionic limbs: devices that look like and are controlled in the same way as the biological body (biomimetic). The untested assumption is that biomimetic motor control enhances device embodiment, learning, generalization and automaticity. To test this, we compared biomimetic and non-biomimetic control strategies for non-disabled participants when learning to control a wearable myoelectric bionic hand operated by an eight-channel electromyography pattern-recognition system. We compared motor learning across days and behavioural tasks for two training groups: biomimetic (mimicking the desired bionic hand gesture with biological hand) and arbitrary control (mapping an unrelated biological hand gesture with the desired bionic gesture). For both trained groups, training improved bionic limb control, reduced cognitive reliance and increased embodiment over the bionic hand. Biomimetic users had more intuitive and faster control early in training. Arbitrary users matched biomimetic performance later in training. Furthermore, arbitrary users showed increased generalization to a new control strategy. Collectively, our findings suggest that biomimetic and arbitrary control strategies provide different benefits. The optimal strategy is probably not strictly biomimetic, but rather a flexible strategy within the biomimetic-to-arbitrary spectrum, depending on the user, available training opportunities and user requirements.

Abstract
In the field of sensory neuroprostheses, one ultimate goal is for individuals to perceive artificial somatosensory information and use the prosthesis with high complexity that resembles an intact system. To this end, research has shown that stimulation-elicited somatosensory information improves prosthesis perception and task performance. While studies strive to achieve sensory integration, a crucial phenomenon that entails naturalistic interaction with the environment, this topic has not been commensurately reviewed. Therefore, here we present a perspective for understanding sensory integration in neuroprostheses. First, we review the engineering aspects and functional outcomes in sensory neuroprosthesis studies. In this context, we summarize studies that have suggested sensory integration. We focus on how they have used stimulation-elicited percepts to maximize and improve the reliability of somatosensory information. Next, we review studies that have suggested multisensory integration. These works have demonstrated that congruent and simultaneous multisensory inputs provided cognitive benefits such that an individual experiences a greater sense of authority over prosthesis movements (i.e., agency) and perceives the prosthesis as part of their own (i.e., ownership). Thereafter, we present the theoretical and neuroscience framework of sensory integration. We investigate how behavioral models and neural recordings have been applied in the context of sensory integration. Sensory integration models developed from intact-limb individuals have led the way to sensory neuroprosthesis studies to demonstrate multisensory integration. Neural recordings have been used to show how multisensory inputs are processed across cortical areas. Lastly, we discuss some ongoing research and challenges in achieving and understanding sensory integration in sensory neuroprostheses. Resolving these challenges would help to develop future strategies to improve the sensory feedback of a neuroprosthetic system.

Abstract
Objective.Sensory feedback is critical for effectively controlling brain-machine interfaces and neuroprosthetic devices. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is proposed as a technique to induce artificial sensory perceptions in rodents, monkeys, and humans. However, to realize the full potential of SCS as a sensory neuroprosthetic technology, a better understanding of the effect of SCS pulse train parameter changes on sensory detection and discrimination thresholds is necessary.Approach.Here we investigated whether stimulation periodicity impacts rats' ability to detect and discriminate SCS-induced perceptions at different frequencies.Main results.By varying the coefficient of variation (CV) of interstimulus pulse interval, we showed that at lower frequencies, rats could detect highly aperiodic SCS pulse trains at lower amplitudes (i.e. decreased detection thresholds). Furthermore, rats learned to discriminate stimuli with subtle differences in periodicity, and the just-noticeable differences from a highly aperiodic stimulus were smaller than those from a periodic stimulus.Significance.These results demonstrate that the temporal structure of an SCS pulse train is an integral parameter for modulating sensory feedback in neuroprosthetic applications.

Abstract
Artificial communication with the brain through peripheral nerve stimulation shows promising results in individuals with sensorimotor deficits. However, these efforts lack an intuitive and natural sensory experience. In this study, we design and test a biomimetic neurostimulation framework inspired by nature, capable of "writing" physiologically plausible information back into the peripheral nervous system. Starting from an in-silico model of mechanoreceptors, we develop biomimetic stimulation policies. We then experimentally assess them alongside mechanical touch and common linear neuromodulations. Neural responses resulting from biomimetic neuromodulation are consistently transmitted towards dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord of cats, and their spatio-temporal neural dynamics resemble those naturally induced. We implement these paradigms within the bionic device and test it with patients (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03350061). He we report that biomimetic neurostimulation improves mobility (primary outcome) and reduces mental effort (secondary outcome) compared to traditional approaches. The outcomes of this neuroscience-driven technology, inspired by the human body, may serve as a model for advancing assistive neurotechnologies.

Abstract
Regaining sensory feedback is pivotal for people living with limb amputation. Electrical stimulation of sensory fibers in peripheral nerves has been shown to restore focal percepts in the missing limb. However, conventional rectangular current pulses induce sensations often described as unnatural. This is likely due to the synchronous and periodic nature of activity evoked by these pulses. Here we introduce a fast-oscillating amplitude-modulated sinusoidal (FAMS) stimulation waveform that desynchronizes evoked neural activity. We used a computational model to show that sinusoidal waveforms evoke asynchronous and irregular firing and that firing patterns are frequency dependent. We designed the FAMS waveform to leverage both low- and high-frequency effects and found that membrane non-linearities enhance neuron-specific differences when exposed to FAMS. We implemented this waveform in a feline model of peripheral nerve stimulation and demonstrated that FAMS-evoked activity is more asynchronous than activity evoked by rectangular pulses, while being easily controllable with simple stimulation parameters. These results represent an important step towards biomimetic stimulation strategies useful for clinical applications to restore sensory feedback.

Abstract
In individuals with sensory-motor impairments, missing limb functions can be restored using neuroprosthetic devices that directly interface with the nervous system. However, restoring the natural tactile experience through electrical neural stimulation requires complex encoding strategies. Indeed, they are presently limited in effectively conveying or restoring tactile sensations by bandwidth constraints. Neuromorphic technology, which mimics the natural behavior of neurons and synapses, holds promise for replicating the encoding of natural touch, potentially informing neurostimulation design. In this perspective, we propose that incorporating neuromorphic technologies into neuroprostheses could be an effective approach for developing more natural human-machine interfaces, potentially leading to advancements in device performance, acceptability, and embeddability. Abstract
Individuals with upper limb loss lack sensation of the missing hand, which can negatively impact their daily function. Several groups have attempted to restore this sensation through electrical stimulation of residual nerves. The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNIs) in eliciting referred sensation. In four participants with upper limb loss, we characterized the quality and location of sensation elicited through electrical stimulation of RPNIs over time. We also measured functional stimulation ranges (sensory perception and discomfort thresholds), sensitivity to changes in stimulation amplitude, and ability to differentiate objects of different stiffness and sizes. Over a period of up to 54 months, stimulation of RPNIs elicited sensations that were consistent in quality (e.g. tingling, kinesthesia) and were perceived in the missing hand and forearm. The location of elicited sensation was partially-stable to stable in 13 of 14 RPNIs. For 5 of 7 RPNIs tested, participants demonstrated a sensitivity to changes in stimulation amplitude, with an average just noticeable difference of 45 nC. In a case study, one participant was provided RPNI stimulation proportional to prosthetic grip force. She identified four objects of different sizes and stiffness with 56% accuracy with stimulation alone and 100% accuracy when stimulation was combined with visual feedback of hand position. Collectively, these experiments suggest that RPNIs have the potential to be used in future bi-directional prosthetic systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Information transmission into the human nervous system is the basis for a variety of prosthetic applications. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) systems are widely available, have a well documented safety record, can be implanted minimally invasively, and are known to stimulate afferent pathways. Nonetheless, SCS devices are not yet used for computer-brain-interfacing applications. OBJECTIVE Here we aimed to establish computer-to-brain communication via medical SCS implants in a group of 20 individuals who had been operated for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. METHODS In the initial phase, we conducted interface calibration with the aim of determining personalized stimulation settings that yielded distinct and reproducible sensations. These settings were subsequently utilized to generate inputs for a range of behavioral tasks. We evaluated the required calibration time, task training duration, and the subsequent performance in each task. RESULTS We could establish a stable spinal computer-brain interface in 18 of the 20 participants. Each of the 18 then performed one or more of the following tasks: A rhythm-discrimination task (n = 13), a Morse-decoding task (n = 3), and/or two different balance/body-posture tasks (n = 18; n = 5). The median calibration time was 79 min. The median training time for learning to use the interface in a subsequent task was 1:40 min. In each task, every participant demonstrated successful performance, surpassing chance levels. CONCLUSION The results constitute the first proof-of-concept of a general purpose computer-brain interface paradigm that could be deployed on present-day medical SCS platforms.

Abstract
Restoring somatosensory feedback in individuals with lower-limb amputations would reduce the risk of falls and alleviate phantom limb pain. Here we show, in three individuals with transtibial amputation (one traumatic and two owing to diabetic peripheral neuropathy), that sensations from the missing foot, with control over their location and intensity, can be evoked via lateral lumbosacral spinal cord stimulation with commercially available electrodes and by modulating the intensity of stimulation in real time on the basis of signals from a wireless pressure-sensitive shoe insole. The restored somatosensation via closed-loop stimulation improved balance control (with a 19-point improvement in the composite score of the Sensory Organization Test in one individual) and gait stability (with a 5-point improvement in the Functional Gait Assessment in one individual). And over the implantation period of the stimulation leads, the three individuals experienced a clinically meaningful decrease in phantom limb pain (with an average reduction of nearly 70% on a visual analogue scale). Our findings support the further clinical assessment of lower-limb neuroprostheses providing somatosensory feedback.

Abstract
Somatosensory neuroprostheses are devices with the potential to restore the senses of touch and movement from prosthetic limbs for people with limb amputation or paralysis. By electrically stimulating the peripheral or central nervous system, these devices evoke sensations that appear to emanate from the missing or insensate limb, and when paired with sensors on the prosthesis, they can improve the functionality and embodiment of the prosthesis. There have been major advances in the design of these systems over the past decade, although several important steps remain before they can achieve widespread clinical adoption outside the lab setting. Here, we provide a brief overview of somatosensory neuroprostheses and explores these hurdles and potential next steps towards clinical translation.

Abstract
Recently, non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation has been widely investigated to restore tactile sensations. It has been demonstrated that tactile sensations in the hand could be elicited by nerve stimulation on the upper arm. However, it is still unknown whether tactile sensations could be elicited by stimulation at a proximal location close to the neck. In this study, non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation tests were performed to elicit tactile sensations in the hand of subjects. Six Ag/AgCl gel electrodes (2 × 3) were placed on the supraclavicular fossa where the proximal parts of the brachial plexus nerves were located. Then, fifteen potential electrode pairs were tested to explore whether tactile sensations could be elicited by non-invasive proximal nerve stimulation. Eight able-bodied subjects (male) were recruited to participate in the test. The stimulated sensation regions in the hand and the sensory intensity were reported and recorded during the experiment. The results demonstrated that the tactile sensations in various regions in the hand could be elicited through non-invasive nerve stimulation at the proximal location close to the neck.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The identification of the electrical stimulation parameters for neuromodulation is a subject-specific and time-consuming procedure that presently mostly relies on the expertise of the user (e.g., clinician, experimenter, bioengineer). Since the parameters of stimulation change over time (due to displacement of electrodes, skin status, etc.), patients undergo recurrent, long calibration sessions, along with visits to the clinics, which are inefficient and expensive. To address this issue, we developed an automatized calibration system based on reinforcement learning (RL) allowing for accurate and efficient identification of the peripheral nerve stimulation parameters for somatosensory neuroprostheses. METHODS We developed an RL algorithm to automatically select neurostimulation parameters for restoring sensory feedback with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). First, the algorithm was trained offline on a dataset comprising 49 subjects. Then, the neurostimulation was then integrated with a graphical user interface (GUI) to create an intuitive AI-based mapping platform enabling the user to autonomously perform the sensation characterization procedure. We assessed the algorithm against the performance of both experienced and naïve and of a brute force algorithm (BFA), on 15 nerves from five subjects. Then, we validated the AI-based platform on six neuropathic nerves affected by distal sensory loss. RESULTS Our automatized approach demonstrated the ability to find the optimal values of neurostimulation achieving reliable and comfortable elicited sensations. When compared to alternatives, RL outperformed the naïve and BFA, significantly decreasing the time for mapping and the number of delivered stimulation trains, while improving the overall quality. Furthermore, the RL algorithm showed performance comparable to trained experimenters. Finally, we exploited it successfully for eliciting sensory feedback in neuropathic patients. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrated that the AI-based platform based on a RL algorithm can automatically and efficiently calibrate parameters for somatosensory nerve stimulation. This holds promise to avoid experts' employment in similar scenarios, thanks to the merging between AI and neurotech. Our RL algorithm has the potential to be used in other neuromodulation fields requiring a mapping process of the stimulation parameters. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is one approach to the potential improvement of patients with post-stroke or post-traumatic spasticity. However, little is known about whether and how such interventions alter supraspinal neural systems involved in the pathogenesis of spasticity. This pilot study investigated whether epidural spinal cord stimulation at the level of the C3-C5 cervical segments, aimed at reducing spasticity, alters the patterns of functional connectivity of the brain. METHODS Eight patients with spasticity in the right limbs as a result of left cerebral hemisphere damage (due to hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke or traumatic and anoxic brain injury) were assessed with fMRI immediately before and immediately after short-term (1 to 6 days) test cervical epidural SCS therapy. Eight demographically and clinically comparable patients with spasticity in the right extremities due to a left hemisphere ischemic stroke and brain injury who received conventional therapy were examined as a control group. All patients also had paresis of one or two limbs and hyperreflexia. RESULTS After the SCS therapy, there were three main findings: (1) higher functional connectivity of the brainstem to the right premotor cortex and changes in functional connectivity between cortical motor areas, (2) increased functional connectivity between the right and left lateral nodes of the sensorimotor network, and (3) a positive correlation between decreased spasticity in the right leg and increased functional connectivity within the right hemisphere sensorimotor cortex. All these changes in functional connectivity occurred with a statistically significant decrease in spasticity, as assessed using the modified Ashworth scale. The control group showed no decrease in spasticity or increase in functional connectivity in any of the seeds of interest. On the contrary, a decrease in functional connectivity of the brainstem and right postcentral gyrus was observed in this group during the observation period. CONCLUSIONS We were thus able to detect intrinsic brain connectivity rearrangements that occurred during spasticity mitigation following short epidural SCS therapy. SIGNIFICANCE The clinical results obtained confirmed the efficacy of short-term anti-spastic SCS therapy. The obtained data on functional rearrangements of the central motor system may shed light on the mechanism of antispastic action of this procedure.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injury can lead to chronic pain, paralysis, and loss of sensation, severely affecting quality of life. Spinal cord stimulation has been used in the clinic to provide pain relief arising from peripheral nerve injuries, however, its ability to restore function after peripheral nerve injury have not been explored. Neuromodulation of the spinal cord through transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS), when paired with activity-based training, has shown promising results towards restoring volitional limb control in people with spinal cord injury. We show, for the first time, the effectiveness of targeted tSCS in restoring strength (407% increase from 1.79 ± 1.24 N to up to 7.3 ± 0.93 N) and significantly increasing hand dexterity in an individual with paralysis due to a peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Furthermore, this is the first study to document a persisting 3-point improvement during clinical assessment of tactile sensation in peripheral injury after receiving 6 weeks of tSCS. Lastly, the motor and sensory gains persisted for several months after stimulation was received, suggesting tSCS may lead to long-lasting benefits, even in PNI. Non-invasive spinal cord stimulation shows tremendous promise as a safe and effective therapeutic approach with broad applications in functional recovery after debilitating injuries.

Abstract
Long-term recovery of limb function is a significant unmet need in people with paralysis. Neuromodulation of the spinal cord through epidural stimulation, when paired with intense activity-based training, has shown promising results toward restoring volitional limb control in people with spinal cord injury. Non-invasive neuromodulation of the cervical spinal cord using transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has shown similar improvements in upper-limb motor control rehabilitation. However, the motor and sensory rehabilitative effects of activating specific cervical spinal segments using tSCS have largely remained unexplored. We show in two individuals with motor-complete SCI that targeted stimulation of the cervical spinal cord resulted in up to a 1,136% increase in exerted force, with weekly activity-based training. Furthermore, this is the first study to document up to a 2-point improvement in clinical assessment of tactile sensation in SCI after receiving tSCS. Lastly, participant gains persisted after a one-month period void of stimulation, suggesting that targeted tSCS may lead to persistent recovery of motor and sensory function.

Abstract
To simultaneously treat phantom limb pain (PLP) and restore somatic sensations using peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), two bilateral transradial amputees were implanted with stimulating electrodes in the proximity of the medial, ulnar and radial nerves. Application of PNS evoked tactile and proprioceptive sensations in the phantom hand. Both patients learned to determine the shape of invisible objects by scanning a computer tablet with a stylus while receiving feedback based on PNS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Оne patient learned to use PNS as feedback from the prosthetic hand that grasped objects of different sizes. PNS abolished PLP completely in one patient and reduced it by 40-70% in the other. We suggest incorporating PNS and/or TENS in active tasks to reduce PLP and restore sensations in amputees.

Abstract
Neural stimulation can alleviate paralysis and sensory deficits. Novel high-density neural interfaces can enable refined and multipronged neurostimulation interventions. To achieve this, it is essential to develop algorithmic frameworks capable of handling optimization in large parameter spaces. Here, we leveraged an algorithmic class, Gaussian-process (GP)-based Bayesian optimization (BO), to solve this problem. We show that GP-BO efficiently explores the neurostimulation space, outperforming other search strategies after testing only a fraction of the possible combinations. Through a series of real-time multi-dimensional neurostimulation experiments, we demonstrate optimization across diverse biological targets (brain, spinal cord), animal models (rats, non-human primates), in healthy subjects, and in neuroprosthetic intervention after injury, for both immediate and continual learning over multiple sessions. GP-BO can embed and improve "prior" expert/clinical knowledge to dramatically enhance its performance. These results advocate for broader establishment of learning agents as structural elements of neuroprosthetic design, enabling personalization and maximization of therapeutic effectiveness.

Abstract
Individuals who have lost the use of their hands because of amputation or spinal cord injury can use prosthetic hands to restore their independence. A dexterous prosthesis requires the acquisition of control signals that drive the movements of the robotic hand, and the transmission of sensory signals to convey information to the user about the consequences of these movements. In this Review, we describe non-invasive and invasive technologies for conveying artificial sensory feedback through bionic hands, and evaluate the technologies' long-term prospects.

Abstract
Most prosthetic limbs can autonomously move with dexterity, yet they are not perceived by the user as belonging to their own body. Robotic limbs can convey information about the environment with higher precision than biological limbs, but their actual performance is substantially limited by current technologies for the interfacing of the robotic devices with the body and for transferring motor and sensory information bidirectionally between the prosthesis and the user. In this Perspective, we argue that direct skeletal attachment of bionic devices via osseointegration, the amplification of neural signals by targeted muscle innervation, improved prosthesis control via implanted muscle sensors and advanced algorithms, and the provision of sensory feedback by means of electrodes implanted in peripheral nerves, should all be leveraged towards the creation of a new generation of high-performance bionic limbs. These technologies have been clinically tested in humans, and alongside mechanical redesigns and adequate rehabilitation training should facilitate the wider clinical use of bionic limbs.

Abstract
Cerebral strokes can disrupt descending commands from motor cortical areas to the spinal cord, which can result in permanent motor deficits of the arm and hand. However, below the lesion, the spinal circuits that control movement remain intact and could be targeted by neurotechnologies to restore movement. Here we report results from two participants in a first-in-human study using electrical stimulation of cervical spinal circuits to facilitate arm and hand motor control in chronic post-stroke hemiparesis ( NCT04512690 ). Participants were implanted for 29 d with two linear leads in the dorsolateral epidural space targeting spinal roots C3 to T1 to increase excitation of arm and hand motoneurons. We found that continuous stimulation through selected contacts improved strength (for example, grip force +40% SCS01; +108% SCS02), kinematics (for example, +30% to +40% speed) and functional movements, thereby enabling participants to perform movements that they could not perform without spinal cord stimulation. Both participants retained some of these improvements even without stimulation and no serious adverse events were reported. While we cannot conclusively evaluate safety and efficacy from two participants, our data provide promising, albeit preliminary, evidence that spinal cord stimulation could be an assistive as well as a restorative approach for upper-limb recovery after stroke.

Abstract
A longstanding engineering ambition has been to design anthropomorphic bionic limbs: devices that look like and are controlled in the same way as the biological body (biomimetic). The untested assumption is that biomimetic motor control enhances device embodiment, learning, generalization, and automaticity. To test this, we compared biomimetic and non-biomimetic control strategies for able-bodied participants when learning to operate a wearable myoelectric bionic hand. We compared motor learning across days and behavioural tasks for two training groups: Biomimetic (mimicking the desired bionic hand gesture with biological hand) and Arbitrary control (mapping an unrelated biological hand gesture with the desired bionic gesture). For both trained groups, training improved bionic limb control, reduced cognitive reliance, and increased embodiment over the bionic hand. Biomimetic users had more intuitive and faster control early in training. Arbitrary users matched biomimetic performance later in training. Further, arbitrary users showed increased generalization to a novel control strategy. Collectively, our findings suggest that biomimetic and arbitrary control strategies provide different benefits. The optimal strategy is likely not strictly biomimetic, but rather a flexible strategy within the biomimetic to arbitrary spectrum, depending on the user, available training opportunities and user requirements.

Abstract
Besides barrier functions, skin possesses multiple sentiences to external stimuli (e.g., temperature, force, and humidity) for human-outside interaction. Thus, skincare should be taken very seriously, especially by patients with sensory disorders. However, currently available skin-mimicking devices are always limited by so much insufficient response functions and nontunable interface behaviors so as not to realize precise health monitoring and self-defense against injury. Herein, a bioinspired cutaneous receptor-perceptual system (CRPS) patch is presented, integrating hybrid pH indicators and triboelectric nanogenerators into biointerface film-adhesives that are fabricated through facile layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly of amide and Schiff-base linkages between alginate grafted with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (AN), tannic acid (TA), and polyethylenimine (PEI). This CRPS patch is adhered robustly to the soft-curved skin surface without failure via "molecular suturing," and amino acid enables its benign peel-on-demand from tissue interfaces. Postdamage self-healing brings it without surgical reoperation, avoiding extra cost, pain, as well as infection risks. Significantly, CRPS patches as artificial chemo/mechanoreceptors can remotely visualize skin physiological status by pH-induced chromism using smartphones and prevent skin contact injury by tactility-driven self-powered electrical signals. Overall, the LBL-based strategy to create controllably biointerface-adhesive CRPS patches will usher in a new era of the mobihealth care platform supporting smart diagnosis and self-protection.

Abstract
Electrical stimulation of the nerves is known to elicit distinct sensations perceived in distal parts of the body. The stimulation is typically modulated in current with charge-balanced rectangular shapes that, although easily generated by stimulators available on the market, are not able to cover the entire range of somatosensory experiences from daily life. In this regard, we have investigated the effect of electrical neurostimulation with four non-rectangular waveforms in an experiment involving 11 healthy able-bodied subjects. Weiss curves were estimated and rheobase and chronaxie values were obtained showing increases in stimulation time required to elicit sensations for some waveforms. The localization of the sensations reported in the hand also appeared to differ between waveforms, although the total area did not vary significantly. Finally, the possibility of distinguishing different charge- and amplitude-matched stimuli was demonstrated through a two-alternative-forced-choice (2AFC) match-to-sample task, showing the ability of participants to successfully distinguish between waveforms with similar electrical characteristics but different shapes and charge transfer rates. This study provides evidence that, by using different waveforms to stimulate nerves, it is possible to affect not only the required charge to elicit sensations but also the sensation quality and its localization.

Abstract
Associative plasticity occurs when two stimuli converge on a common neural target. Previous efforts to promote associative plasticity have targeted cortex, with variable and moderate effects. In addition, the targeted circuits are inferred, rather than tested directly. In contrast, we sought to target the strong convergence between motor and sensory systems in the spinal cord. We developed spinal cord associative plasticity, precisely timed pairing of motor cortex and dorsal spinal cord stimulations, to target this interaction. We tested the hypothesis that properly timed paired stimulation would strengthen the sensorimotor connections in the spinal cord and improve recovery after spinal cord injury. We tested physiological effects of paired stimulation, the pathways that mediate it, and its function in a preclinical trial. Subthreshold spinal cord stimulation strongly augmented motor cortex evoked muscle potentials at the time they were paired, but only when they arrived synchronously in the spinal cord. This paired stimulation effect depended on both cortical descending motor and spinal cord proprioceptive afferents; selective inactivation of either of these pathways fully abrogated the paired stimulation effect. Spinal cord associative plasticity, repetitive pairing of these pathways for 5 or 30 min in awake rats, increased spinal excitability for hours after pairing ended. To apply spinal cord associative plasticity as therapy, we optimized the parameters to promote strong and long-lasting effects. This effect was just as strong in rats with cervical spinal cord injury as in uninjured rats, demonstrating that spared connections after moderate spinal cord injury were sufficient to support plasticity. In a blinded trial, rats received a moderate C4 contusive spinal cord injury. Ten days after injury, they were randomized to 30 min of spinal cord associative plasticity each day for 10 days or sham stimulation. Rats with spinal cord associative plasticity had significantly improved function on the primary outcome measure, a test of dexterity during manipulation of food, at 50 days after spinal cord injury. In addition, rats with spinal cord associative plasticity had persistently stronger responses to cortical and spinal stimulation than sham stimulation rats, indicating a spinal locus of plasticity. After spinal cord associative plasticity, rats had near normalization of H-reflex modulation. The groups had no difference in the rat grimace scale, a measure of pain. We conclude that spinal cord associative plasticity strengthens sensorimotor connections within the spinal cord, resulting in partial recovery of reflex modulation and forelimb function after moderate spinal cord injury. Since both motor cortex and spinal cord stimulation are performed routinely in humans, this approach can be trialled in people with spinal cord injury or other disorders that damage sensorimotor connections and impair dexterity.

Abstract
Objective.Epidural spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a potential intervention to improve limb and autonomic functions, with lumbar stimulation improving locomotion and thoracic stimulation regulating blood pressure. Here, we asked whether sacral SCS could be used to target the lower urinary tract (LUT) and used a high-density epidural electrode array to test whether individual electrodes could selectively recruit LUT nerves.Approach. We placed a high-density epidural SCS array on the dorsal surface of the sacral spinal cord and cauda equina of anesthetized cats and recorded the stimulation-evoked activity from nerve cuffs on the pelvic, pudendal and sciatic nerves.Main results. Here we show that sacral SCS evokes responses in nerves innervating the bladder and urethra and that these nerves can be activated selectively. Sacral SCS always recruited the pelvic and pudendal nerves and selectively recruited both of these nerves in all but one animal. Individual branches of the pudendal nerve were always recruited as well. Electrodes that selectively recruited specific peripheral nerves were spatially clustered on the arrays, suggesting anatomically organized sensory pathways.Significance.This selective recruitment demonstrates a mechanism to directly modulate bladder and urethral function through known reflex pathways, which could be used to restore bladder and urethral function after injury or disease.

Abstract
The direct neural stimulation of peripheral or central nervous systems has been shown as an effective tool to treat neurological conditions. The electrical activation of the nervous sensory pathway can be adopted to restore the artificial sense of touch and proprioception in people suffering from sensory-motor disorders. The modulation of the neural stimulation parameters has a direct effect on the electrically induced sensations, both when targeting the somatosensory cortex and the peripheral somatic nerves. The properties of the artificial sensations perceived, as their location, quality and intensity are strongly dependent on the direct modulation of pulse width, amplitude and frequency of the neural stimulation. Different sensory encoding schemes have been tested in patients showing distinct effects and outcomes according to their impact on the neural activation. Here, I reported the most adopted neural stimulation strategies to artificially encode somatosensation into the peripheral nervous system. The real-time implementation of these strategies in bionic devices is crucial to exploit the artificial sensory feedback in prosthetics. Thus, neural stimulation becomes a tool to directly communicate with the human nervous system. Given the importance of adding artificial sensory information to neuroprosthetic devices to improve their control and functionality, the choice of an optimal neural stimulation paradigm could increase the impact of prosthetic devices on the quality of life of people with sensorimotor disabilities.

Abstract
Modern myoelectric prosthetic hands have multiple independently controllable degrees of freedom, but require constant visual attention to use effectively. Somatosensory feedback provides information not available through vision alone and is essential for fine motor control of our limbs. Similarly, stimulation of the nervous system can potentially provide artificial somatosensory feedback to reduce the reliance on visual cues to efficiently operate prosthetic devices. We have shown previously that epidural stimulation of the lateral cervical spinal cord can evoke tactile sensations perceived as emanating from the missing arm and hand in people with upper-limb amputation. In this case study, two subjects with upper-limb amputation used this somatotopically-matched tactile feedback to discriminate object size and compliance while controlling a prosthetic hand. With less than 30 min of practice each day, both subjects were able to use artificial somatosensory feedback to perform a subset of the discrimination tasks at a success level well above chance. Subject 1 was consistently more adept at determining object size (74% accuracy; chance: 33%) while Subject 2 achieved a higher accuracy level in determining object compliance (60% accuracy; chance 33%). In each subject, discrimination of the other object property was only slightly above or at chance level suggesting that the task design and stimulation encoding scheme are important determinants of which object property could be reliably identified. Our observations suggest that changes in the intensity of artificial somatosensory feedback provided via spinal cord stimulation can be readily used to infer information about object properties with minimal training.

Abstract
Objective.Electrical stimulation can induce sensation in the phantom limb of individuals with amputation. It is difficult to generalize existing findings as there are many approaches to delivering stimulation and to assessing the characteristics and benefits of sensation. Therefore, the goal of this systematic review was to explore the stimulation parameters that effectively elicited referred sensation, the qualities of elicited sensation, and how the utility of referred sensation was assessed.Approach.We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Engineering Village through January of 2022 to identify relevant papers. We included papers which electrically induced referred sensation in individuals with limb loss and excluded papers that did not contain stimulation parameters or outcome measures pertaining to stimulation. We extracted information on participant demographics, stimulation approaches, and participant outcomes.Main results.After applying exclusion criteria, 49 papers were included covering nine stimulation methods. Amplitude was the most commonly adjusted parameter (n= 25), followed by frequency (n= 22), and pulse width (n= 15). Of the 63 reports of sensation quality, most reported feelings of pressure (n= 52), paresthesia (n= 48), or vibration (n= 40) while less than half (n= 29) reported a sense of position or movement. Most papers evaluated the functional benefits of sensation (n= 33) using force matching or object identification tasks, while fewer papers quantified subjective measures (n= 16) such as pain or embodiment. Only 15 studies (36%) observed percept intensity, quality, or location over multiple sessions.Significance.Most studies that measured functional performance demonstrated some benefit to providing participants with sensory feedback. However, few studies could experimentally manipulate sensation location or quality. Direct comparisons between studies were limited by variability in methodologies and outcome measures. As such, we offer recommendations to aid in more standardized reporting for future research.

Abstract
Current prosthetic limbs offer little to no sensory feedback. Developments in peripheral nerve interfaces provide opportunities to restore some level of tactile feedback that is referred to the prosthetic limb. One such method is a Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI), composed of a muscle graft wrapped around a free nerve ending. Here, we characterize perception and discomfort thresholds, as well as sensitivity to stimulation through two-alternative forced choice discrimination tasks. One person with transradial amputation who had one RPNI constructed from the median nerve and two constructed from the ulnar nerve participated. Average perception thresholds across all RPNIs were between 950 and 1120 nC with variance of less than 350 nC over a 36-month period. Discomfort thresholds were from 3880 nC to 9770 nC across all RPNIs. The just noticeable difference for the Median RPNI was 520 nC, larger than either the Ulnar-1 or Ulnar-2 RPNIs (210 nC, 470 nC, respectively). We also calculated Weber fractions to compare sensitivity between different RPNIs and relate our results to previous studies. Weber fractions for each of the Median, Ulnar-1, and Ulnar-2 RPNIs were 0.134, 0.088, 0.087, respectively. This work is the first to quantify the functional stimulation range and sensitivity of RPNIs in a human participant. Future work will focus on characterizing RPNI sensation in additional individuals to determine if these findings are generalizable to the amputee population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE For high-level peripheral nerve injured (PNI) patients with severe sensory dysfunction of upper extremities, identifying the multi-site tactile stimulation is of great importance to provide neurorehabilitation with sensory feedback. In this pilot study, we showed the feasibility of identifying multi-site and multi-intensity tactile stimulation in terms of electroencephalography (EEG). APPROACH Three high-level PNI patients and eight non-PNI participants were recruited in this study. Four different sites over the upper arm, forearm, thumb finger and little finger were randomly stimulated at two intensities (both sensory-level) based on the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Meanwhile, 64-channel EEG signals were recorded during the passive tactile sense stimulation on each side. MAIN RESULTS The spatial-spectral distribution of brain oscillations underlying multi-site sensory stimulation showed dominant power attenuation over the somatosensory and prefrontal cortices in both alpha-band (8-12 Hz) and beta-band (13-30 Hz). But there was no significant difference among different stimulation sites in terms of the averaged power spectral density over the region of interest (ROI). By further identifying different stimulation sites using temporal-spectral features, we found the classification accuracies were all above 89% for the affected arm of PNI patients, comparable to that from their intact side and that from the non-PNI group. When the stimulation site-intensity combinations were treated as eight separate classes, the classification accuracies were ranging from 88.89% to 99.30% for the affected side of PNI subjects, similar to that from their non-affected side and that from the non-PNI group. Other performance metrics, including Specificity, Precision, and F1-Score, also showed a sound identification performance for both PNI patients and non-PNI subjects. SIGNIFICANCE These results suggest that reliable brain oscillations could be evoked and identified well, even though induced tactile sense could not be discerned by the PNI patients. This study have implication for facilitating bidirectional neurorehabilitation systems with sensory feedback.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Validating the ability for advanced prostheses to improve function beyond the laboratory remains a critical step in enabling long-term benefits for prosthetic limb users. APPROACH A nine week take-home case study was completed with a single participant with upper limb amputation and osseointegration (OI) to better understand how an advanced prosthesis is used during daily activities. The participant was already an expert prosthesis user and used the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL) at home during the study. The MPL was controlled using wireless electromyography (EMG) pattern recognition-based movement decoding. Clinical assessments were performed before and after the take-home portion of the study. Data was recorded using an onboard data log in order to measure daily prosthesis usage, sensor data, and EMG data. MAIN RESULT The participant's continuous prosthesis usage steadily increased (p = 0.04, max = 5.5 hr) over time and over 30% of the total time was spent actively controlling the prosthesis. The duration of prosthesis usage after each pattern recognition training session also increased over time (p = 0.04), resulting in up to 5.4 hr of usage before retraining the movement decoding algorithm. Pattern recognition control accuracy improved (1.2% per week, p < 0.001) with a maximum number of 10 classes trained at once and the transitions between different degrees of freedom increased as the study progressed, indicating smooth and efficient control of the advanced prosthesis. Variability of decoding accuracy also decreased with prosthesis usage (p < 0.001) and 30% of the time was spent performing a prosthesis movement. During clinical evaluations, Box and Blocks and the Assessment of the Capacity for Myoelectric Control (ACMC) scores increased by 43% and 6.2%, respectively, demonstrating prosthesis functionality and the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) scores decreased, on average, by 25% across assessments, indicating reduced cognitive workload while using the MPL, over the nine week study. SIGNIFICANCE In this case study, we demonstrate that an onboard system to monitor prosthesis usage enables better understanding of how prostheses are incorporated into daily life. That knowledge can support the long-term goal of completely restoring independence and quality of life to individuals living with upper limb amputation.

Abstract
Augmenting the body with artificial limbs controlled concurrently to one's natural limbs has long appeared in science fiction, but recent technological and neuroscientific advances have begun to make this possible. By allowing individuals to achieve otherwise impossible actions, movement augmentation could revolutionize medical and industrial applications and profoundly change the way humans interact with the environment. Here, we construct a movement augmentation taxonomy through what is augmented and how it is achieved. With this framework, we analyze augmentation that extends the number of degrees-of-freedom, discuss critical features of effective augmentation such as physiological control signals, sensory feedback and learning as well as application scenarios, and propose a vision for the field.

Abstract
Background:
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is traditionally performed by implanting surgical leads along the midline of the spinal cord, over the dorsal columns. Here, we present a patient who successfully underwent lateral cervical SCS to treat chronic refractory neuropathic pain.
Methods:
A 46-year-old female, with a schwannoma involving the right axillary nerve, presented with a chronic refractory right upper extremity pain syndrome. The tumor was located between the fibers of the teres minor and the posterior deltoid, and measured 2.2 cm in diameter. After 8 months of analgesics, opioids, physiotherapy, and acupuncture, the patient underwent surgery; however, the tumor was unresectable (i.e., due to significant adjacent vascular/neural structures). Three months later, she had a midline C6-C7 laminectomy for placement of a right-sided epidural SCS lead (i.e., containing 16 electrode contacts).
Results:
Within 4 days following this SCS procedure, the patient’s pain completely resolved; at 10 postoperative months, she still remains pain free.
Conclusion:
Lateral SCS at the C6-C7 level provided a safe and effective option for the relief of chronic neuropathic pain attributed to an unresectable schwannoma of the right axillary nerve in a 46-year-old female.

Abstract
The Eighth International Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Meeting was held June 7-9th, 2021 in a virtual format. The conference continued the BCI Meeting series' interactive nature with 21 workshops covering topics in BCI (also called brain-machine interface) research. As in the past, workshops covered the breadth of topics in BCI. Some workshops provided detailed examinations of specific methods, hardware, or processes. Others focused on specific BCI applications or user groups. Several workshops continued consensus building efforts designed to create BCI standards and increase the ease of comparisons between studies and the potential for meta-analysis and large multi-site clinical trials. Ethical and translational considerations were both the primary topic for some workshops or an important secondary consideration for others. The range of BCI applications continues to expand, with more workshops focusing on approaches that can extend beyond the needs of those with physical impairments. This paper summarizes each workshop, provides background information and references for further study, presents an overview of the discussion topics, and describes the conclusion, challenges, or initiatives that resulted from the interactions and discussion at the workshop.

Abstract
Objective.Considerable resources are being invested to enhance the control and usability of artificial limbs through the delivery of unnatural forms of somatosensory feedback. Here, we investigated whether intrinsic somatosensory information from the body part(s) remotely controlling an artificial limb can be leveraged by the motor system to support control and skill learning.Approach.We used local anaesthetic to attenuate somatosensory inputs to the big toes while participants learned to operate through pressure sensors a toe-controlled and hand-worn robotic extra finger. Motor learning outcomes were compared against a control group who received sham anaesthetic and quantified in three different task scenarios: while operating in isolation from, in synchronous coordination, and collaboration with, the biological fingers.Main results.Both groups were able to learn to operate the robotic extra finger, presumably due to abundance of visual feedback and other relevant sensory cues. Importantly, the availability of displaced somatosensory cues from the distal bodily controllers facilitated the acquisition of isolated robotic finger movements, the retention and transfer of synchronous hand-robot coordination skills, and performance under cognitive load. Motor performance was not impaired by toes anaesthesia when tasks involved close collaboration with the biological fingers, indicating that the motor system can close the sensory feedback gap by dynamically integrating task-intrinsic somatosensory signals from multiple, and even distal, body-parts.Significance.Together, our findings demonstrate that there are multiple natural avenues to provide intrinsic surrogate somatosensory information to support motor control of an artificial body part, beyond artificial stimulation.

Abstract
Somatosensory neuroprostheses exploit invasive and non-invasive feedback technologies to restore sensorimotor functions lost to disease or trauma. These devices use electrical stimulation to communicate sensory information to the brain. A sensation characterization procedure is thus necessary to determine the appropriate stimulation parameters and to establish a clear personalized map of the sensations that can be restored. Several questionnaires have been described in the literature to collect the quality, type, location, and intensity of the evoked sensations, but there is still no standard psychometric platform. Here, we propose a new psychometric system containing previously validated questionnaires on evoked sensations, which can be applied to any kind of somatosensory neuroprosthesis. The platform collects stimulation parameters used to elicit sensations and records subjects' percepts in terms of sensation location, type, quality, perceptual threshold, and intensity. It further collects data using standardized assessment questionnaires and scales, performs measurements over time, and collects phantom limb pain syndrome data. The psychometric platform is user-friendly and provides clinicians with all the information needed to assess the sensory feedback. The psychometric platform was validated with three trans-radial amputees. The platform was used to assess intraneural sensory feedback provided through implanted peripheral nerve interfaces. The proposed platform could act as a new standardized assessment toolbox to homogenize the reporting of results obtained with different technologies in the field of somatosensory neuroprosthetics.

Abstract
Existing prosthetic technologies for people with upper limb amputation are being adopted at moderate rates. Once fitted for these devices, many upper limb amputees report not using them regularly or at all. The primary aim of this study was to solicit feedback about prosthetic technology and important device design criteria from amputees, clinicians, and device regulators. We compare these perspectives to identify common or divergent priorities. Twenty-one adults with upper limb loss, 35 clinicians, and 3 regulators completed a survey on existing prosthetic technologies and a conceptual sensorimotor prosthesis driven by implanted myoelectric electrodes with sensory feedback via spinal root stimulation. The survey included questions from the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scale, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand, and novel questions about technology acceptance and neuroprosthetic design. User and clinician ratings of satisfaction with existing devices were similar. Amputees were most accepting of the proposed sensorimotor prosthesis (75.5% vs clinicians(68.8%), regulators(67.8%)). Stakeholders valued user-centered outcomes like individualized task goals, improved quality of life, device reliability, and user safety; regulators emphasized these last two. The results of this study provide insight into amputee, clinician, and regulator priorities to inform future upper-limb prosthetic design and clinical trial protocol development.

Abstract
Over half of all spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are cervical, which can lead to paralysis and respiratory compromise, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Effective treatments to restore breathing after severe upper cervical injury are lacking; thus, it is imperative to develop therapies to address this. Epidural stimulation has successfully restored motor function after SCI for stepping, standing, reaching, grasping, and postural control. We hypothesized that closed-loop stimulation triggered via healthy hemidiaphragm EMG activity has the potential to elicit functional neuroplasticity in spinal respiratory pathways after cervical SCI (cSCI). To test this, we delivered closed-loop, electrical, epidural stimulation (CLES) at the level of the phrenic motor nucleus (C4) for 3 d after C2 hemisection (C2HS) in freely behaving rats. A 2 × 2 Latin Square experimental design incorporated two treatments, C2HS injury and CLES therapy resulting in four groups of adult, female Sprague Dawley rats: C2HS + CLES (n = 8), C2HS (n = 6), intact + CLES (n = 6), intact (n = 6). In stimulated groups, CLES was delivered for 12-20 h/d for 3 d. After C2HS, 3 d of CLES robustly facilitated the slope of stimulus-response curves of ipsilesional spinal motor evoked potentials (sMEPs) versus nonstimulated controls. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of CLES eliciting respiratory neuroplasticity after C2HS in freely behaving animals. These findings suggest CLES as a promising future therapy to address respiratory deficiency associated with cSCI.

Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major disability that results in motor and sensory impairment and extensive complications for the affected individuals which not only affect the quality of life of the patients but also result in a heavy burden for their families and the health care system. Although there are few clinically effective treatments for SCI, research over the past few decades has resulted in several novel treatment strategies which are related to neuromodulation. Neuromodulation-the use of neuromodulators, electrical stimulation or optogenetics to modulate neuronal activity-can substantially promote the recovery of sensorimotor function after SCI. Recent studies have shown that neuromodulation, in combination with other technologies, can allow paralyzed patients to carry out intentional, controlled movement, and promote sensory recovery. Although such treatments hold promise for completely overcoming SCI, the mechanisms by which neuromodulation has this effect have been difficult to determine. Here we review recent progress relative to electrical neuromodulation and optogenetics neuromodulation. We also examine potential mechanisms by which these methods may restore sensorimotor function. We then highlight the strengths of these approaches and remaining challenges with respect to its application.

Abstract
The progress of therapeutic neuromodulation greatly depends on improving stimulation parameters to most efficiently induce neuroplasticity effects. Intermittent θ-burst stimulation (iTBS), a form of electrical stimulation that mimics natural brain activity patterns, has proved to efficiently induce such effects in animal studies and rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation studies in humans. However, little is known about the potential neuroplasticity effects of iTBS applied through intracranial electrodes in humans. This study characterizes the physiological effects of intracranial iTBS in humans and compare them with α-frequency stimulation, another frequently used neuromodulatory pattern. We applied these two stimulation patterns to well-defined regions in the sensorimotor cortex, which elicited contralateral hand muscle contractions during clinical mapping, in patients with epilepsy implanted with intracranial electrodes. Treatment effects were evaluated using oscillatory coherence across areas connected to the treatment site, as defined with corticocortical-evoked potentials. Our results show that iTBS increases coherence in the β-frequency band within the sensorimotor network indicating a potential neuroplasticity effect. The effect is specific to the sensorimotor system, the β band, and the stimulation pattern and outlasted the stimulation period by ∼3 min. The effect occurred in four out of seven subjects depending on the buildup of the effect during iTBS treatment and other patterns of oscillatory activity related to ceiling effects within the β band and to preexistent coherence within the α band. By characterizing the neurophysiological effects of iTBS within well-defined cortical networks, we hope to provide an electrophysiological framework that allows clinicians/researchers to optimize brain stimulation protocols which may have translational value.NEW & NOTEWORTHY θ-Burst stimulation (TBS) protocols in transcranial magnetic stimulation studies have shown improved treatment efficacy in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders. The optimal protocol to induce neuroplasticity in invasive direct electrical stimulation approaches is not known. We report that intracranial TBS applied in human sensorimotor cortex increases local coherence of preexistent β rhythms. The effect is specific to the stimulation frequency and the stimulated network and outlasts the stimulation period by ∼3 min.

Abstract
The hand endows us with unparalleled precision and versatility in our interactions with objects, from mundane activities such as grasping to extraordinary ones such as virtuoso pianism. The complex anatomy of the human hand combined with expansive and specialized neuronal control circuits allows a wide range of precise manual behaviours. To support these behaviours, an exquisite sensory apparatus, spanning the modalities of touch and proprioception, conveys detailed and timely information about our interactions with objects and about the objects themselves. The study of manual dexterity provides a unique lens into the sensorimotor mechanisms that endow the nervous system with the ability to flexibly generate complex behaviour.

Abstract
In the past few years, we have gained a better understanding of the information processing mechanism in the human brain, which has led to advances in artificial intelligence and humanoid robots. However, among the various sensory systems, studying the somatosensory system presents the greatest challenge. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the human somatosensory system and its corresponding applications in artificial systems. Due to the uniqueness of the human hand in integrating receptor and actuator functions, we focused on the role of the somatosensory system in object recognition and action guidance. First, the low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the human skin and somatotopic organization principles along the ascending pathway, which are fundamental to artificial skin, were summarized. Second, we discuss high-level brain areas, which interacted with each other in the haptic object recognition. Based on this close-loop route, we used prosthetic upper limbs as an example to highlight the importance of somatosensory information. Finally, we present prospective research directions for human haptic perception, which could guide the development of artificial somatosensory systems.

Abstract
Background Despite important advancements in control and mechatronics of myoelectric prostheses, the communication between the user and his/her bionic limb is still unidirectional, as these systems do not provide somatosensory feedback. Electrotactile stimulation is an attractive technology to close the control loop since it allows flexible modulation of multiple parameters and compact interface design via multi-pad electrodes. However, the stimulation interferes with the recording of myoelectric signals and this can be detrimental to control. Methods We present a novel compact solution for simultaneous recording and stimulation through dynamic blanking of stimulation artefacts. To test the system, a feedback coding scheme communicating wrist rotation and hand aperture was developed specifically to stress the myoelectric control while still providing meaningful information to the subjects. Ten subjects participated in an experiment, where the quality of closed-loop myoelectric control was assessed by controlling a cursor in a two degrees of freedom target-reaching task. The benchmark performance with visual feedback was compared to that achieved by combining visual feedback and electrotactile stimulation as well as by using electrotactile feedback only. Results There was no significant difference in performance between visual and combined feedback condition with regards to successfully reached targets, time to reach a target, path efficiency and the number of overshoots. Therefore, the quality of myoelectric control was preserved in spite of the stimulation. As expected, the tactile condition was significantly poorer in completion rate (100/4% and 78/25% for combined and tactile condition, respectively) and time to reach a target (9/2 s and 13/4 s for combined and tactile condition, respectively). However, the performance in the tactile condition was still good, with no significant difference in path efficiency (38/8%) and the number of overshoots (0.5/0.4 overshoots), indicating that the stimulation was meaningful for the subjects and useful for closed-loop control. Conclusions Overall, the results demonstrated that the developed system can provide robust closed-loop control using electrotactile stimulation. The system supports different encoding schemes and allows placing the recording and stimulation electrodes next to each other. This is an important step towards an integrated solution where the developed unit will be embedded into a prosthetic socket.

Abstract
Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of lumbosacral sensorimotor circuits improves leg motor control in animals and humans with spinal cord injury (SCI). Upper-limb motor control involves similar circuits, located in the cervical spinal cord, suggesting that EES could also improve arm and hand movements after quadriplegia. However, the ability of cervical EES to selectively modulate specific upper-limb motor nuclei remains unclear. Here, we combined a computational model of the cervical spinal cord with experiments in macaque monkeys to explore the mechanisms of upper-limb motoneuron recruitment with EES and characterize the selectivity of cervical interfaces. We show that lateral electrodes produce a segmental recruitment of arm motoneurons mediated by the direct activation of sensory afferents, and that muscle responses to EES are modulated during movement. Intraoperative recordings suggested similar properties in humans at rest. These modelling and experimental results can be applied for the development of neurotechnologies designed for the improvement of arm and hand control in humans with quadriplegia. The efficacy of epidural electrical stimulation (EES) to engage arm muscles and improve movement after spinal cord injury is still unclear. Here, the authors investigated how EES can recruit upper-limb motor neurons by combining computational modelling with experiments in non-human primates.

Abstract
The control and manipulation of various types of end effectors such as powered exoskeletons, prostheses, and ‘neural’ cursors by brain-machine interface (BMI) systems has been the target of many research projects. A seamless “plug and play” interface between any BMI and end effector is desired, wherein similar user's intent cause similar end effectors to behave identically. This report is based on the outcomes of an IEEE Standards Association Industry Connections working group on End Effectors for Brain-Machine Interfacing that convened to identify and address gaps in the existing standards for BMI-based solutions with a focus on the end-effector component. A roadmap towards standardization of end effectors for BMI systems is discussed by identifying current device standards that are applicable for end effectors. While current standards address basic electrical and mechanical safety, and to some extent, performance requirements, several gaps exist pertaining to unified terminologies, data communication protocols, patient safety and risk mitigation.

Abstract
Neural prostheses are designed to counter the effects of neurotrauma and restore the fundamental building blocks of human experience including motor action, sensation, and meaningful communication with other individuals. Here, we present an overview of active avenues, open questions, and debated topics in neuroprosthetics, such as targeting the mechanisms of sensorimotor recovery and designing brain interfaces for scalability. We review leading opinions in this thriving field, aiming to inform translational practice toward clinical adoption.
