Abstract
The aim of this work was to test the efficacy of winter-spring control strategies against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in an area highly favourable for its development in Argentina. Control schemes using three or four annual applications of synthetic acaricides were evaluated. Furthermore, the dynamics of the non-parasitic phases of R. microplus were analysed to provide a framework for the application of pasture spelling as a tool for tick control. The treatment schemes provided appropriate levels of efficacy against R. microplus and also prevented the occurrence of the major peak in abundance of this tick in autumn. A significant overall effect against R. microplus can be achieved when the control strategies tested in this study are applied within the area most ecologically favourable for this tick in Argentina. Analysis of the dynamics of the non-parasitic phase of R. microplus indicates that the spelling period required to achieve a significant reduction of larvae in pastures fluctuates between 12 and 17 weeks if spelling is initiated in spring or early summer, but between 20 and 28 weeks if spelling is started in late summer, autumn or winter.

Abstract
This work was performed to test the efficacy of winter-spring control strategies against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) infestations on cattle in the area ecologically most favourable for the development of this tick in Argentina. Two control schemes using three and four annual applications of acaricides, respectively, were evaluated. Animals in Group 1 were treated with ivermectin 3.15% on day 0, fluazuron on day 34, and fipronil on day 85. Animals in Group 2 were treated with ivermectin 3.15% on day 0, fluazuron on day 34, flumethrin on day 85, and fipronil on day 114. Animals in Group 3 represented the control group. Both treatment schemes provided appropriate levels of efficacy against R. microplus and also prevented the occurrence of the major peak in the frequency of this tick in autumn. The two treatment schemes were similar in terms of efficacy and thus the addition of a fourth treatment does not seem to confer any further advantage. The results of this work indicate that these strategic control methods provide appropriate levels of control against R. microplus.

Abstract
The population dynamics of Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in northwest Argentina was analysed to support the design of strategic methods for its control. Both parasitic and non-parasitic phases were studied. The seasonal activity of R. microplus in its parasitic phase was characterized by three peaks in abundance: the first in mid-late spring; the second in summer, and the third in autumn. The non-parasitic phase of R. microplus was characterized by a long total non-parasitic period observed after exposures of females from mid-summer to early autumn, a short total non-parasitic period observed after exposures of females from late winter to late spring, a short period of larval longevity in early and mid-summer, and no hatch of the eggs produced by females exposed in mid- and late autumn and winter. Treatments of cattle administered during the period from late winter to late spring will act on small cohorts of R. microplus, preventing the emergence of larger generations in summer and autumn. A 17-week spelling period starting in late spring and early summer will be necessary to achieve optimal control of R. microplus free-living larvae. If spelling begins in mid- or late summer or in autumn, the required period will be 26-27 weeks.

Abstract
The ecology of Amblyomma tonelliae (Ixodida: Ixodidae), including its seasonal distribution and the development periods of each stage, was investigated during a study carried out over two consecutive years in northwestern Argentina. In addition, the genetic variation of this tick was studied through analyses of 16S rDNA sequences. Amblyomma tonelliae has a 1-year lifecycle characterized by a long pre-moult period in larvae with no development of morphogenetic diapause. Larvae peak in abundance during late autumn and early winter; nymphs peak in abundance in spring, and adults do so from late spring to early summer. Amblyomma tonelliae shows a marked ecological preference for the driest areas of the Chaco ecoregion. In analyses of 16S rDNA sequences in genes from different populations of A. tonelliae, values for nucleotide diversity and the average number of nucleotide differences showed genetic diversity within this species to be low. No significant differences were found in comparisons among populations.

Abstract
Larvae and nymphs of Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 ticks (confirmed by morphological characters and by comparison of 16S mitochondrial rDNA sequences) were collected from Sigmodontinae Wagner, rodents in central and northern Argentina and Uruguay. A total of 100 larvae and 38 nymphs of I. loricatus were collected on the genera Akodon Meyen (n = 36 individuals), Calomys Waterhouse (n = 2), Oligoryzomys Bang in = 12), Oxymycterus Waterhouse (n = 9), and Scapteromys Waterhouse (n = 13). 72 larvae and 18 nymphs were collected on Akodon. Adults of I. loricatus were found in central Argentina and Uruguay on Didelphimorphia of the genera Didelphis Linnaeus and Lutreolina Thomas. Ixodes loricatus has been considered a species with strict total specificity to Didelphimorphia. Our results show that this statement may not be justified. Sigmodontinae rodents are sympatric and share habitats with the phylogenetically distant Didelphimorphia; infestation with I. loricatus seems to be its consequence. We tentatively consider I. loricatus moderately specific to Didelphimorphia.

Abstract
One ear of each of five cows on a property close to Dean Funes, province of Córdoba, Argentina, was inspected monthly from December 2004 to November 2006 to determine the presence of Otobius megnini (Dugès) and to ascertain its seasonality. Ticks were collected to study the biological parameters of larvae, nymphs and adult ticks. Groups of nymphs were also maintained at three different photoperiods at 25 degrees C. The abundance of immature stages was greatest during January-April and August-October in the first and second years of the study, respectively. No larvae successfully moulted. Nymphs weighing < 17 mg also failed to moult, but 89% of heavier nymphs moulted into adults. Nymphs moulting to males weighed less (49.5 +/- 16.09 mg) than nymphs moulting to females (98.1 +/- 34.08 mg). The pre-moult period was similar for nymphs moulting to either sex and significantly longer (P < 0.01) for female nymphs maintained at 25 degrees C compared with nymphs kept at 27 degrees C. No effect of photoperiod on the pre-moult periods of nymphs was detected. Female ticks produced a mean of 7.0 +/- 1.94 egg batches after a preoviposition period of 16.4 +/- 8.41 days for the first batch. The mean oviposition period was 61 +/- 20.8 days and the duration of oviposition for each batch varied from 1 to 6 days. The mean number of eggs per batch was 93.1 +/- 87.53. The minimum incubation period for the first egg batch was 13.6 +/- 2.77 days. The total number of eggs laid by each female was 651.6 +/- 288.90. Parthenogenesis was not observed. The reproductive efficiency index (REI) (number of eggs laid/weight of female in mg) was 5.5 +/- 1.26. Pearson's correlations showed a significant direct relationship between the weight of the female and number of eggs laid (P < 0.01) and REI (P < 0.05). Several of the biological values presented above for the tick population from the Neotropical zoogeographic region showed marked differences to equivalent values for O. megnini populations from the U.S.A. (Nearctic) and India (Oriental). Nevertheless, the only two sequences of 16S rDNA deposited in GenBank from ticks originating in Argentina and allegedly in the U.S.A. indicate that they are conspecific (99.8% agreement). We tentatively consider the biological differences among populations of this tick species to represent adaptations for survival at different conditions.

Abstract
The hosts, distribution, intraspecific genetic variation and phylogenetic position of Amblyomma parvum (Acari: Ixodidae) have recently been re-assessed. Data on this tick's hosts and distribution were obtained not only from existing literature but also from unpublished records. Sequences of the ticks' mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were used to evaluate genetic variation among specimens of A. parvum from different localities in Argentina and Brazil, and to explore the phylogenetic relationships between this tick and other Amblyomma species. Although several species of domestic and wild mammal act as hosts for adult A. parvum, most collected adults of this species have come from cattle and goats. Caviid rodents of the subfamily Caviinae appear to be the hosts for the immature stages. So far, A. parvum has been detected in 12 Neotropical biogeographical provinces (Chaco, Cerrado, Eastern Central America, Venezuelan Coast, Pantanal, Parana Forest, Caatinga, Chiapas, Venezuelan Llanos, Monte, Western Panamanian Isthmus, and Roraima) but the Chaco province has provided significantly more specimens than any other (P<0.0001). The 16S rDNA sequences showed just 0.0%-1.1% divergence among the Argentinean A. parvum investigated and no more than 0.2% divergence among the Brazilian specimens. The observed divergence between the Argentinean and Brazilian specimens was, however, greater (3.0%-3.7%). Although there is now molecular and morphological evidence to indicate that A. parvum, A. pseudoparvum, A. auricularium and A. pseudoconcolor are members of a natural group, previous subgeneric classifications do not reflect this grouping. The subgeneric status of these tick species therefore needs to be re-evaluated. The 16S-rDNA-based evaluation of divergence indicates that the gene flow between Argentinean and Brazilian 'A. parvum' is very limited and that the Argentinean 'A. parvum' may be a different species to the Brazilian.

Abstract
A new species of argasid tick, Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) rioplatensis Venzal, Estrada-Peña, & Mangold, is described from larval and adult specimens collected in Uruguay. Further specimens from Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile are ascribed to the new species. Key distinguishing characters of larvae of the species are the number of pairs of dorsal setae (19-20 but typically 20 in O. rioplatensis, compared with 16-17 but typically 17 in O. puertoricensis and O. talaje), and the length of the hypostome, which is clearly longer in O. rioplatensis than in O. talaje. Morphological details of the adults of these species are inadequate for taxonomic purposes. The genetic distance between O. puertoricensis and O. rioplatensis, based on 16S rDNA sequencing, is approximately 12.7%. Variability in some morphological features, using multivariate morphometric discrimination to assess congruence between populations, was examined among larval specimens of O. talaje and O. puertoricensis collected from the United States, and Central and South America. Larval specimens of O. talaje from Guatemala (near the type locality of the species) were morphologically different from Mexican and southern U.S. populations originally described as O. talaje. In the absence of DNA data for these populations, and because of inadequate statistical discrimination among body characters, we prefer to refer to the Mexican and U.S. material as O. nr. talaje until further analysis of population variability is conducted using an adequate sample size.

The ticks reported in Paraguay, which are here reviewed, can be categorized as 'endemic or established' (Argas persicus or a sibling species, Ornithodoros hasei, O. rostratus, O. rudis, O. talaje/O. puertoricensis, Amblyomma aureolatum, Am. auricularium, Am. brasiliense, Am. cajennense, Am. calcaratum, Am. coelebs, Am. dissimile, Am. dubitatum, Am. incisum, Am. longirostre, Am. nodosum, Am. ovale, Am. pacae, Am. parvum, Am. pseudoconcolor, Am. rotundatum, Am. scutatum, Am. tigrinum, Am. triste, Dermacentor nitens, Haemaphysalis juxtakochi, H. leporispalustris, Ixodes loricatus, Rhipicephalus microplus, and Rh. sanguineus), 'probably endemic or established' (Ar. miniatus, Ar. monachus, Am. argentinae, Am. humerale, Am. naponense, Am. oblongoguttatum, Am. pseudoparvum, I. aragaoi/I. pararicinus, I. auritulus, I. luciae), or 'erroneously reported from Paraguay' (O. coriaceus, Am. americanum and Am. maculatum). Most Paraguayan tick collections have been made in the Chaco phyto-geographical domain, in the central part of the country. Argas persicus or a related species, Am. cajennense, D. nitens, Rh. microplus and Rh. sanguineus are important parasites of domestic animals. Ornithodoros rudis, Am. aureolatum, Am. brasiliense, Am. cajennense, Am. coelebs, Am. incisum, Am. ovale and Am. tigrinum have all been collected from humans. In terms of public health, the collections of Am. cajennense and Am. triste from humans may be particularly significant, as these species are potential vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii and Ri. parkeri, respectively.

Abstract
The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is the most endangered felid in the world. Only about 160 individuals remain in 2 separate metapopulations in Southern Spain (Sierra Morena and Doñana). We obtained blood samples of 20 lynxes captured from 2004 to 2006, and determined the prevalence of infection and genetic diversity of Cytauxzoon spp. using 18S rRNA PCR and sequence analysis. Prevalence of infection was 15% (3 of 20). Cytauxzoon sp. was only detected in Sierra Morena. For phylogenetic analysis, we used the sequences reported in the present study and those characterized in different domestic and wild felids and ticks from North and South America, Asia and Europe. Three different Cytauxzoon sp. sequences were obtained. They were closely related to that obtained from a Spanish cat, but diverged in up to 1.0% with respect to the only previously reported sequence from an Iberian lynx. Conversely, the latter sequence clustered together with C. manul sequences obtained from Pallas cats (Otocolobus manul) in Mongolia. Our analysis yields a separate cluster of C. felis sequences from cats, wild felids and ticks in the United States and Brazil. These results suggest that at least 2 different Cytauxzoon spp. may be present in Iberian lynx. The apparent absence in one of the areas, together with the possibility of fatal cytauxzoonosis in lynxes makes necessary disease risks to be taken into account in management conservation strategies, such as translocations and re-introductions.

Abstract
The female of Argas (Persicargas) keiransi Estrada-Peña, Venzal & González-Acuña (Acari: Argasidae) is described from specimens collected in the type locality in Chile. The female has a unique combination of characters in the dorsal cuticle and in the number and pattern of ventrolateral setae in the basis capituli. Additional features on tarsus I chaetotaxy and dorsal plate are provided for the larva of the species, as observed on flat specimens derived from engorged females collected in the type locality. Keys for the larvae of the New World Persicargas are provided as well as illustrations for prominent characters in hypostome and posterolateral setae. The mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequence of A. keiransi has been obtained, and an analysis of the phylogenetic relationships with other ticks is included. Phylogenetic analysis provides support for a Persicargas grouping of species, separated from species in Argas.

Abstract
The hosts of larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma tigrinum, a tick whose adults feed on wild and domestic Canidae in South America, are uncertain. A 17 months survey was carried out trapping wild vertebrates in north-western Córdoba, Argentina, to evaluate their parasitism with A. tigrinum subadults. Larvae and nymphs of this tick species were identified conventionally and by comparison of 16S rDNA sequences with GenBank deposited sequences. A total of 207 small and medium-sized rodents and 182 birds were captured and examined for ticks. Most ticks on birds were from ground forest feeding birds (BB) with a minimal contribution of birds feeding in open pastures. All ticks from rodents were obtained from representatives of the families Cricetidae (SR) and Caviidae (MR). Percent of larvae infestation was higher (P<0.01, Chi-square distribution) in BB (55.2%) and SR (46.4%) than in MR (17.4%) and the same trend was found for number of larvae on these hosts (test of Kruskal-Wallis). Caviidae (only representative Galea musteloides) rodents were extremely prone to be infested with nymphs of A. tigrinum (94.2%) followed by BB (50.6%) and SR (3.6%) (P<0.01) and the same tendency was found for number of nymphs (P<0.01). The index of aggregation for nymphs on MR was the lowest (0.409) followed by nymphs on BB (0.706) which may be a consequence of higher and homogenous exposure of G. musteloides to host-seeking nymphs. Several BB are food source for both larvae and nymphs of A. tigrinum while for rodents larvae were common only on SR (mainly on the Sigmodontinae Akodon dolores and Graomys sp.) and nymphs feed almost exclusively on MR. Therefore, both birds and rodents are of importance for the survival strategy of A. tigrinum subadults. The plasticity of A. tigrinum to colonize areas with different climates plus the capacity of their subadults to feed on hosts widely distributed indicates that this tick has the potential to become a widespread parasite but this does not seem to be the actual situation. Several proposals are presented to further understand its ecology.

Abstract
We addressed the possible effects of several climate scenarios on habitat suitability (HS) for the cattle tick Boophilus microplus and the probability of producing permanent populations from introduced females of that tick in central parts of Argentina, using both a correlative model (derived from climate predictors) and a mechanistic (life cycle) model. There was high correlation (R2 = 0.866) between HS-derived and life cycle outputs for HS values higher than 0.52, suggesting that HS is a good estimator of the life cycle of the tick above a critical threshold of HS values. Scenarios with increased temperatures increased suitable habitats for the tick in southern parts of the study region, extending below parallel 34 degrees S, but suitable habitats remained limited in the west. A concurrent increase in rainfall produced a further increase of HS in these areas. Results from the life cycle model suggest that in areas of suitable habitat, permanent cattle tick populations are most probable if engorged females are introduced during mid-summer.

Abstract
Twenty eight species of Ixodidae have been found on man in South America (21 Amblyomma, 1 Boophilus, 2 Dermacentor, 2 Haemaphysalis, 1 Ixodes and 1 Rhipicephalus species). Most of them are rarely found on man. However, three species frequently parasitize humans in restricted areas of Argentina (A. neumanni reported from 46 localities), Uruguay (A. triste from 21 sites) and Argentina-Brazil (A. parvum from 27 localities). The most widespread ticks are A. cajennense (134 localities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela), A. ovale (37 localities in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela) and A. oblongoguttatum (28 sites in Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela). Amblyomma aureolatum (18 localities in Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana and Paraguay), A. cajennense, and A. triste are vectors of rickettsioses to man in South America. A better understanding of the respective roles of these and other tick species in transmitting pathogens to humans will require further local investigations. Amblyomma ticks should be the main subjects of these studies followed by species of Boophilus, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis and Rhipicephalus species. In contrast with North America, Europe and Asia, ticks of the genus Ixodes do not appear to be major players in transmitting diseases to human. Indeed, there is only one record of an Ixodes collected while feeding on man for all South America.

Abstract
Biological data of immature stages of Amblyomma tigrinum were obtained from larvae and nymphs both fed on rats and rabbits. Data from nymphs recovered from a wild rodent (Galea musteloides) are also reported. Additional results in DNA composition of males moulted from nymphs fed on laboratory and wild hosts are presented. The ticks were maintained in darkness at 27 +/- 1 degrees C and 83-86% RH. The mean recovery rates were 49.1% and 43.6% with a moulting success of 96.2% and 90.8% in larvae fed on rats and rabbits, respectively. The engorgement weights were almost identical in larvae recovered from both hosts. The mean recovery rates of nymphs were 37.3% and 69.9% in specimens fed on rats and rabbits, respectively. The moulting success was 94.5%, 100% and 98.1% in nymphs fed on rats, rabbits and G. musteloides, respectively. Nymphs from all hosts moulting to females were significantly heavier (P < 0.01) than those moulting to males despite their range of engorgement weight showed overlap. A higher proportion (>or=61.5%) of nymphs from all hosts moulted to females. Present results suggest that members of Rodentia and Lagomorpha are suitable hosts for the immature stages of A. tigrinum, contrasting with previous results from Brazilian colonies of this tick. The DNA sequence from ticks fed on G. musteloides showed 99.7% identity with that from ticks fed on rabbits and also with the DNA sequence already available (GenBank AY498562 ) for A. tigrinum.

Abstract
Bovine anaplasmosis, caused by the tick-borne rickettsia Anaplasma marginale, is endemic in Sicily and results in economic loss to the cattle industry. This study was designed to characterize strains of A. marginale at the molecular level from cattle in the Province of Palermo, Sicily. Seropositivity of cattle >or=1 year old for A. marginale in the study area ranged from 62% to 100%. The observed prevalence of A. marginale infections in cattle herds ranged from 25% to 100%. Two predominant A. marginale msp4 genotypes were found. A positive correlation was found between the prevalence of infection and the presence of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus. Phylogenetic analysis of msp4 sequences of European strains of A. marginale did not provide phylogeographical information. These results suggest that development of farm husbandry systems and vaccines for genetically heterogeneous populations of A. marginale are needed for control of anaplasmosis in this region of Sicily.

Abstract
The efficacy of a commercial pour-on formulation of eprinomectin, a macrocyclic lactone, against experimental infestations of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) ticks was evaluated in two trials involving 27 Bos taurus calves. The first trial was designed to evaluate the effects of a single treatment at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg of body weight against standard size B. microplus females (4.5-8.0 mm long). A significant reduction in tick numbers (P<0.05, Wilcoxon test) was observed between treated calves as compared to untreated ones from Day 3 (44% efficacy) after treatment to the end of the trial on Day 28 (96.9%), with a peak efficacy of 97.1% on Day 21. In the second trial the effect of eprinomectin on standard size tick numbers, engorgement weight and fertility of female ticks from calves with a single treatment dose of 1 mg/kg on Day 0 and calves treated twice at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg on Days 0 and 4 was evaluated. An efficacy >93% was obtained from Day 2 to Day 28 after treatment in calves treated twice at 0.5 mg/kg, and to the end of the trial (Day 35) in calves treated once with 1 mg/kg. The 1mg/kg treatment provided >98% residual efficacy for at least 7 days. During the first part of the second trial the efficacy of eprinomectin resulted from a dramatic adverse effect on engorgement weight and fertility of female ticks, with 100% control on Day 5 (dosage of 1 mg/kg) and on Days 6 and 7 (two doses of 0.5 mg/kg). Following Day 7, most of the effect was due to reduction in the number of standard size female ticks.

Abstract
Thirty nine wild birds from seven families (Alcedinidae, Emberizidae, Furnariidae, Parulidae, Trochilidae, Turdidae and Tyrannidae) were caught from 4 to 7 of February, 2004 at Rincón da Vassoura (31 degrees 15' S 56 degrees 03' W) Department of Tacuarembó, Uruguay. Ninety one nymphs and forty one larvae of Ixodidae were recovered from them. The majority of ticks were conventionally identified but 16S mitochondrial rDNA sequences were obtained for larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma with uncertain specific status to be compared with sequences of species from this genus. The 16S rDNA of Haemaphysalis juxtakochi Cooley was also obtained. Most ticks, 1 nymph of Amblyomma longirostre (Koch), 5 larvae of Amblyomma aureolatum (Pallas) and 3 nymphs of Amblyomma spp., 10 nymphs and 71 larvae of H. juxtakochi, 23 nymphs and 12 larvae of Ixodes pararicinus Keirans and Clifford, were found on the 5 Turdus albicollis Vieillot and 6 Turdus rufiventris Vieillot (Turdidae) caught. One nymph of A. longirostre and 2 nymphs of I. pararicinus were collected from the only Syndactyla rufosuperciliata (Lafresnaye) (Furnariidae) captured; 1 larva of I. pararicinus was collected on one of two Basileuterus leucoblepharus (Vieillot) (Parulidae) trapped and 1 nymph of A. longirostre was found on one of nine Elaenia parvirostris Pelzeln (Tyrannidae) captured. All these findings constitute new host records with the exception of I. pararicinus on S. rufosuperciliata, and stress the importance of Turdus as hosts for I. pararicinus, H. juxtakochi and A. aureolatum. Nymphs of H. juxtakochi and Amblyomma spp. were also found on man and vegetation.

Abstract
The distribution and ecological 'preferences', in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, of the prominent, pathogen-carrying tick Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) were reviewed, on the basis of the published literature, satellite imagery, and the examination of several tick collections. The tick has been collected from the southern U.S.A. (Texas and Florida) to northern Argentina, but is probably absent from Uruguay and southern Brazil (the few records of the species in these areas probably represent mis-identifications). The ecological conditions prevailing in the areas where the tick has been reported were characterized using remotely sensed data on temperature and vegetation stress (as indicated by the normalized derived vegetation index, or NVDI). In Mexico and the U.S.A., the species is found in areas where the mean temperature is around 13-16 degrees C and the NVDI is high. South of Venezuela, however, the tick is only common in zones where the mean temperature is 18-20 degrees C and the NVDI is again high. It is relatively low mean temperatures and differences in the seasonal patterns of rainfall that seem to limit the tick's colonization of areas to the north of its current distribution. Low temperatures also seem to be keeping the tick out of mountainous areas, such as the Sierra Madre in Mexico and the pre-Andean hills in Argentina. The southern distribution of A. cajennense is mainly restricted by relatively low temperatures and not by low humidity.

Ear tags containing 40% organophosphate insecticides (diazinon or diazinon plus chlorpyrifos-ethyl) were applied to control Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) in treated (TG01 and TG02) and untreated (UG01 and UG02) groups of Holstein heifers born in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Control and treated groups were assessed for the abundance of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) from August 2001 to April 2002 and again from August 2002 to April 2003. The treatment had a high efficacy for control of horn flies (maximum median number per heifer of TG01 and TG02 = 5) but a low effect on the abundance of stable flies. The total numbers of S. calcitrans were 1251 (42.9% of the total) and 1668 (57.1%) for TG01 and UG01, and 1423 (48.8%) and 1494 (51.2%) in TG02 and UG02, respectively. No significant difference in stable fly burden was found in 55 of the 76 weeks evaluated. A unimodal peak of abundance in the spring was found during the first fly season, and a bimodal abundance, with peaks in the spring and autumn, during the second season. No strong associations between horn fly and stable fly burdens was found in individuals of the CG01 (correlation coefficient = 0.13, P > 0.05) or CG02 (correlation coefficient = 0.538, P < 0.05, determination coefficient = 0.289).

Abstract
DNA sequences of Amblyomma aureolatum (Pallas, 1772) and Amblyomma ovale Koch, 1844 were obtained to determine genetic differences between these tick species. Collections of these species are discussed in relation to distribution and hosts. Seven ticks collections (four from Brazil, one from Argentina, one from Uruguay and one from USA) house a total of 1272 A. aureolatum (224 males, 251 females, 223 nymphs and 574 larvae) and 1164 A. ovale (535 males, 556 females, 66 nymphs and 7 larvae). The length of the sequenced mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragment for A. aureolatum was 370bp and for A. ovale was 373bp. The DNA sequence analysis showed a 13.1% difference between the two species. Apart from one male A. ovale found on a toad, all adult ticks were found on mammals. The majority of adult specimens of both tick species were removed from Carnivora (96.1 and 84.3% of A. aureolatum and A. ovale, respectively), especially from dogs (53.1% of A. aureolatum, and 46.4% of A. ovale). Collections on wild Canidae were higher for A. aureolatum (23.3%) than for A. ovale (7.1%). On the other hand, collections of A. ovale adults on wild Felidae were higher (18.3%) than findings of A. aureolatum (9.2%). The contribution of other mammalian orders as hosts for adults of A. aureolatum and A. ovale was irrelevant, with the exception of Perissodactyla because Tapiridae contributed with 13.0% of the total number of A. ovale adults. Adults of both tick species have been found occasionally on domestic hosts (apart of the dog) and humans. Most immature stages of A. aureolatum were found on Passeriformes birds, while rodents and carnivores were the most common hosts for nymphs and larvae of A. ovale. A. aureolatum has been found restricted to the Neotropical region, covering the eastern area of South America from Uruguay to Surinam, including northeastern Argentina, eastern Paraguay, southeastern Brazil and French Guiana. A. ovale showed a distribution that covers the Neotropical region from central-northern Argentina throughout the Neotropics into the Nearctic region of Mexico with a few records from the USA, also with collection sites in Paraguay, Bolivia, most Brazilian states, Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala and several states of Mexico.

Abstract
Collections of Amblyomma auricularium (Conil 1878) and A. pseudoconcolor Aragão, 1908 are discussed in relation to distribution and hosts. Three tick collections (two from Argentina and a third from the USA) house a total of 574 A. auricularium (307 males, 162 females, 73 nymphs and 32 larvae) and 179 A. pseudoconcolor (96 males, 74 females, 4 nymphs and 5 larvae). Apart from an adult A. pseudoconcolor found on a bird, Nothura maculosa Temminck, 1815, all ticks were found on mammals. The great majority of specimens of both ticks species were removed from the family Dasypodidae Gray, 1821 (84.9% and 93.8% of A. auricularium and A. pseudoconcolor, respectively). Amblyomma auricularium has also been found on wild hosts of the families Myrmecophagidae and occasionally Didelphidae, Caviidae, Chinchillidae, Hydrochaeridae, Muridae, Canidae, Mustelidae, Procyonidae and domestic animals (cattle, dogs, horses), while A. pseudoconcolor has also been found occasionally on wild hosts of the family Didelphidae and on domestic animals (cattle, dogs). Amblyomma pseudoconcolor appears to be restricted to the Neotropical region, covering northern Argentina and the eastern region of South America from Uruguay to Surinam, including south-eastern Paraguay, eastern Brazil and French Guiana. Amblyomma auricularium is distributed from northern Patagonia in Argentina throughout the Neotropics into the Nearctic region up to the southern USA (Texas, Florida), with collection localities also in Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela. It is not known whether A. auricularium is an established resident of the USA.

Abstract
A study was performed to determine if the number of horn fly (Haematobia irritans) adults differ significantly on Holstein (black and white coat color), Holstein x Holstein Friesian (black and white coat color) and Holstein x Jersey (black coat color) steers, 10-12 months old at the onset of the study. All steers were run together on lucerne paddocks and the number of flies counted at 30-day intervals from September 2000 to August 2001. No significant differences (P > 0.05, test of Kruskal-Wallis) were found in fly numbers, even in the period April-May 2001 when the infestation reached its peak. We were unable to demonstrate that coat color influenced horn fly abundance in the present study. It appears that none of the biotypes evaluated had any advantage for natural control of H. irritans.

Abstract
The toxicity of cypermethrin to the horn fly Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) was determined for samples collected from untreated herds at a farm in central Argentina from October 1997 to May 2001. Field tests of the efficacy of cypermethrin against horn flies were first carried out at this farm in 1993, when the fly was shown to be susceptible to pyrethroids. Subsequently the horn fly populations on this farm were shown to have become resistant and, since 1997, the use of cypermethrin has been restricted to experimental purposes. In this study, fly samples collected in 1999, 2000 and 2001 were subjected to a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the presence of a specific nucleotide substitution in the sodium channel gene sequence, which has been associated with target site insensitivity to pyrethroids. This analysis showed that the level of cypermethrin resistance had diminished between 1997 and 2001. However, this was not sufficient to restore the efficacy of this pyrethroid to the level found prior to the onset of resistance. Heterozygous and homozygous resistant flies were detected in all samples of flies subjected to PCR diagnosis of alleles conferring target site resistance.

Abstract
The seasonal distribution of Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus, 1758) was evaluated at 31 degrees 12' S-61 degrees 29' W, Santa Fe, Argentina from November 1992 to August 2000 by weekly fly counts on 20 Holstein cows not treated against ectoparasites. The analysis was mainly focused on winter fly abundance. Two peaks of abundance were found from spring to autumn. Adults of H. irritans were consistently found on cattle during winter, with increasing numbers from the end of July to late August. The only climatic parameter soundly correlated with the four week period, before each winter fly count, was the mean air temperature with the exception of year 1998. No significant relationship was found between level of cow infestation and relative humidity, saturation deficit and rainfall. Horn fly infestation on cows was lower than 20% from end of June to end of August only in 1995, when mean air temperature was consistently lower than 11 degrees C during the four week period previous to most fly counts. Conversely, the mean temperature was higher than 12 degrees C previous to fly counts in 1998, when most cows remained infested. The results indicate that a proportion (unknown) of immature stages of H. irritans were insensitive to diapause inducing factors and developed through winter.

Abstract
Synthetic pyrethroids are considered currently less effective than organophosphate insecticides for controlling Haematobia irritans on cattle in its American southern range. To test the validity of this hypothesis, horn fly populations from 95 cattle herds in central-northern Argentina and southern Brazil were evaluated to determine 50% lethal concentrations (LC(50)) to cypermethrin and diazinon, respectively. Horn flies were exposed to filter papers and glass vials treated with cypermethrin and diazinon, respectively, and LC(50) values were determined using probit analysis. Two and 78 fly populations showed LC(50) values indicating susceptibility and resistance to cypermethrin, respectively, in comparison to historical LC(50) values obtained when the horn fly populations were susceptible to cypermethrin. Five fly populations had an undetermined resistance status to cypermethrin. The diazinon tests showed no obvious indications of H. irritans resistance. Thirty nine percent of farmers still rely on pyrethroids to control horn fly populations on cattle which represents a decreasing proportion from a few years ago when horn fly control was carried out using pyrethroids almost exclusively. Organophosphates could provide control for horn flies resistant to pyrethroids; however, the reliance on chemicals alone to control H. irritans is not considered a proper approach for the future.

Abstract
The efficacy of ear tags containing 30% chlorfenapyr (total tag weight=13g) to control natural Haematobia irritans (L.) infestations was evaluated for Holstein heifers in Rafaela, province of Santa Fe, Argentina. A group of heifers (TG) was treated with two ear tags (one tag per ear). A control group (ACG) was maintained in a paddock adjacent to the TG paddock and, a distant control group (DCG) was maintained 700m apart from the other groups. From day 4 to day 98 after treatment, H. irritans infestations of ACG were significantly higher (P<0.05, test of Kruskal-Wallis) than the corresponding infestation of TG, but significantly lower than infestation in DCG, probably due to the proximity of TG. The chlorfenapyr control period, with an efficacy higher than 90% to reduce horn fly populations, lasted for 9 weeks when TG infestation was compared to fly numbers in ACG, but increased to 12 weeks in comparison to DCG. The results of this study show that ear tags impregnated with chlorfenapyr are a useful alternative to pyrethroids and organo-phosphate compounds for horn fly control.

Abstract
A study was carried out to assess the resistance of pure and cross-bred groups of cattle to the horn fly Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) in northern Argentina. Pure-bred cattle were Criolla, Iberian Bos taurus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) and Nellore, Bos indicus Linnaeus (Artiodactyla: Bovidae). Cross-bred cattle were Hereford, British B. taurus (34%) X Nellore (66%) and Hereford (66%) X Nellore (34%). All were heifers and animals were maintained in two groups, each containing a mixture of pure and cross-breeds. The lowest fly numbers were found on Criolla heifers and the highest on Hereford X Nellore cross-breeds. However, it could not be determined from this study whether this was a consequence of breed and/or size, as Criolla heifers were lighter than the corresponding Hereford X Nellore heifers. Fly numbers on the heifers followed an approximately negative binomial distribution. However, the ranking of individual animals in their level of infestation within subgroups was not consistent. Hence, culling the most infested heifers on any given date would at best give only a small improvement in H. irritans control.

Abstract
Cattle are treated 6-12 times yearly to control Boophilus microplus ticks in the east zone of the Argentinean infested region, while 1-4 treatments are applied for tick control in the west zone. In the 1970s resistance to organo-phosphate acaricides was found in the east zone, but not in the west zone. However, a shift to synthetic pyrethroids (SP) was made through all infested regions. Currently, indications of resistance to SP in the east zone, but not in the west zone, are provoking to a switch to formamidine acaricides. During 1998 a total of 147 B. microplus engorged females were collected from 20 beef cattle ranches from the west zone of the Argentinean infested region. Individual progenies of these ticks were tested ('larval packet test') with cypermethrin and deltamethrin, and their LC 50 and LC 90 were compared to those estimated for the Milagro susceptible strain. No evidence of resistance to these SP was found. Due to sampling restraints the results are presented as preliminary. Nevertheless, a shift away from use of SP for control of B. microplus in the west zone appears to be unjustified and should be independent of the resistance circumstances observed in the east zone of the Argentinean tick infested region.

Abstract
The findings of Amblyomma tigrinum in continental Argentina north of 40 degrees S are presented according to phytogeographic domains (Andean-Patagonic, Amazonian and Chaco) and the seasonal distribution is depicted on a monthly basis. A total of 718 adult ticks and four nymphs were found. A. tigrinum ticks were present in all domains. Adult ticks were found all year round but they were more abundant during the summer. Most ticks were found on domestic dogs but the survey has a bias to domestic hosts. It is speculated that the cycle of immature is bound to shelters that mitigate extreme climatic conditions, thus explaining the finding of this tick species in contrasting ecological areas.

Abstract
Fifty Bos taurus x Bos indicus heifers naturally infested with Boophilus microplus ticks were divided into two groups of 25 heifers each. Individuals of one group were treated with moxidectin 0.5% pour-on at a dosage of 500 microg of moxidectin/kg body weight and heifers from the other group remained as untreated controls. An efficacy higher than 95% was found on days 7-21 after treatment by using female ticks 4.5-8.0 mm long as the main infestation parameter. A lower, but significant efficacy (p < 0.05) was also found on days 1 (32.3% efficacy) and 27 (73.4% efficacy) post-treatment. Significantly (p < 0.05) lower numbers of immature ticks were also observed on heifers of the treated group from days 7 through 27 after treatment. A lower engorgement weight of female ticks from treated heifers was found on days 1 and 21 after treatment. Treatment also affected reproductive performance (oviposition, egg hatch and number of eggs laid) of female ticks collected on Day 1.

Abstract
The mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences of the following eight European Metastriata tick species were obtained by direct polymerase-chain-reaction cycle sequencing and silver-staining methods: Rhipicephalus bursa, R. pusillus, R. sanguineus, R. turanicus, Boophilus annulatus, Dermacentor marginatus, Haemaphysalis punctata, and Hyalomma lusitanicum. This mitochondrial gene seems to be a good marker for the establishment of genetic relationships among closely related tick species, but it does not seem to be useful for comparisons of distantly related taxa. The molecular data provide very strong support for the monophyly of the Rhipicephalinae, including Hyalomma spp. However, the genus Rhipicephalus may not be considered a monophyletic group; in all analyses carried out in this study, R. bursa clustered with Boophilus spp. The high percentage of similarity (98.7%) observed between R. sanguineus and R. turanicus sequences would suggest that these species recently diverged within the Rhipicephalus genus. Phylogenetic analyses showed a monophyletic relationship among Amblyomminae taxa. The relationships between Haemaphysalis species and the true placement of this genus within Metastriata could not be resolved.

Abstract
The complete 18S rRNA gene sequences of the following six European hard-tick species were obtained by direct PCR cycle sequencing and silver-staining methods: Rhipicephalus pusillus, Boophilus annulatus, Dermacentor marginatus, Hyalomma lusitanicum, Haemaphysalis punctata, and Ixodes ricinus. Differences observed in the sequence alignment of these six species together with the 18S rRNA gene sequences of 13 other hard-tick species demonstrate that this gene is a good marker for supraspecific differentiation as well as genus grouping among hard ticks. Phylogenetic analyses strongly support that Hyalomma species share a common ancestor with Rhipicephalinae and, consequently, Hyalomminae should no longer be considered an independent subfamily. However, no definitive conclusion could be reached to support or oppose the separation of the subfamilies Haemaphysalinae and Amblyomminae.

Abstract
The small subunit (18S) rRNA gene sequences of the lymnaeid morphs I and II (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Basommatophora: Lymnaeidae) transmitting human fascioliasis in the high endemic zone of the northern Bolivian Altiplano and of Lymnaea cubensis from Mexico and Guadeloupe island (Caribbean) have been obtained by direct polymerase chain reaction PCR cycle sequencing and silver staining methods and compared to that of the 6 most common European Lymnaeidae species. Results allow us to establish definitively the distinction between the lymnaeids from the northern Bolivian Altiplano and L. cubensis. Lymnaea cubensis is a valid species distributed in North and Central America but absent in the northern Bolivian Altiplano. Lymnaeid morphs I and II from the northern Bolivian Altiplano both present the same 18S rDNA sequence, which is moreover identical to that of the European species Lymnaea truncatula. Significant nucleotide substitutions in helix E10-1 of the variable region V2 of the secondary structure suggest the need for distinguishing L. cubensis in the subgenus Lymnaea (Bakerilymnaea) with L. (B.) cubensis as type species. The subgenus Lymnaea (Fossaria) is retained, with L. (F.) truncatula as type species. The larger number of nucleotides in the 18S rDNA sequence of L. cubensis (1,860 bp) with regard to the other Lymnaea species (1,843-1,852 bp) is tentatively related to the more ancient paleogeographic origin of L. cubensis. The grouping of L. cubensis with L. truncatula and the relationship of Lymnaea auricularia with Lymnaea peregra in the phylogenetic trees obtained show an evolutionary parallelism with the digenean parasite species they transmit, namely Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, respectively.

Abstract
The seasonal occurrence of anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale) outbreaks in dairy and beef cattle was analysed for a region of Argentina (29 degrees to 31 degrees S and 58 degrees to 62 degrees W) that is free of Boophilus microplus ticks, using data collected from December 1978 to November 1995. The outbreaks were confirmed by inspection of blood smears obtained from sick or dead cattle. A total of 94 outbreaks were confirmed by inspection of blood smears obtained from sick or dead cattle. A total of 94 outbreaks were identified: 48 in beef cattle and 46 in dairy herds. The proportional seasonal distribution of outbreaks was different in beef and dairy cattle (chi-square = 15.08, P < 0.01). While no seasonal pattern of anaplasmosis outbreaks was found in dairy cattle, there was a concentration of outbreaks during the summer months (54% of the total) in beef cattle. Rural practices that are carried out more frequently on dairy than on beef cattle may have favoured iatrogenic transmission of A. marginale in the milk production system.

Abstract
A live, frozen experimental vaccine containing Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina multiplied in vitro was stored in liquid nitrogen after simultaneous cryopreservation using glycerol as cryoprotectant. The viability of the vaccine was tested by inoculating (subcutaneously) three groups of seven steers each, 2, 12 and 24 h after thawing at 40 degrees C and dilution to obtain a dose of 2 x 10(7) of each organism. All vaccinated cattle developed detectable parasitaemia in thin and/or thick blood smears. No statistically significant differences in the prepatent period were detected amongst the cattle groups (analysis of variance). This prepatent period was 12.3 days for B. bovis and 8.4 days for B. bigemina. Vaccinal organisms derived from in vitro culture systems may replace antigens obtained from in vivo culture to produce vaccine against cattle babesiosis.

Abstract
The length, width and position of the nucleus of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina kinetes from the haemolymph of Boophilus microplus engorged female ticks were recorded. Additionally, the shape of Babesia bovis kinetes were registered as curved, semi-curved or straight. To this aim Boophilus microplus tick larvae from a colony free of Babesia were fed on splenectomised calves artificially infected with either Babesia bovis or Babesia bigemina pathogenic strains. Six engorged female ticks showing an infection of at least ten mature kinetes of Babesia bovis in a sample of haemolymph 5 days after detachment were also monitored 7, 9 and 10 days after collection. The same procedure was followed with six engorged female ticks infected with Babesia bigemina. One hundred and twenty kinetes of each species of Babesia were evaluated. The mean length +/- standard deviation and ranges for Babesia bovis kinetes were 14.30 +/- 0.922 microns and 11.9-16.3 microns, while the corresponding measures for the kinetes of Babesia bigemina were 11.27 +/- 0.900 microns and 9.0-13.1 microns (P < 0.001, t-test). The width was 3.33 +/- 0.315 microns, 2.6-4.0 microns for Babesia bovis and 2.24 +/- 0.287 microns, 1.5-2.8 microns for Babesia bigemina kinetes (P < 0.001). The most common position of the nucleus was central for both species of Babesia. A total of 58% of Babesia bovis kinetes showed the typical curved tail. No effect of time post-collection and individual host ticks in the kinete of Babesia bigemina was found while an unexpected influence of individual host tick in the width of Babesia bovis kinetes was detected (P < 0.01, analysis of variance). The overlap in the sizes of kinetes from both species of Babesia makes it difficult to apply the results to ticks of unknown babesial infection status. This finding is further complicated by the intra-specific size variations of Babesia kinetes from different geographical origins.

Abstract
Babasia bovis infection in the eggs of Boophilus microplus was investigated by examining the total output of eggs by 10 engorged female ticks with a level of haemolymph infection with B bovis ranging from 0.2 to 20.6 kinetics per microscope field. The ticks were fed on infected calves, with a parasitaemia ranging from 0.01 per cent to 0.02 per cent, inoculated with a stabilate of B microplus larvae containing the protozoa. Infected eggs, 9.5 per cent of the total eggs laid, were detected from the fourth day of oviposition onwards. No relationship was found between the level of haemolymph infection and the percentage or total number of infected eggs laid.

Abstract
The seasonal occurrence of ticks infesting cattle was monitored in a Bos taurus x Bos indicus commercial herd fed on a combination of native grasses and annual pastures in northwestern Argentina. The number of female ticks (Boophilus and Amblyomma) and the proportion of cattle infested with larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma ticks were recorded from a sample of 15 cows in 24 visits at intervals of 21-50 days from 5 December 1986 to 24 November 1988. The cattle were maintained on native grasses in forested habitats for 341 days, on native grasses in deforested habitats for 116 days and finally for 264 days on annual pastures. On 15 visits Boophilus microplus females were found, Amblyomma cajennense were detected on 11 counts, seven counts were positive for Amblyomma neumanni and two counts for Amblyomma parvum females. The peak of abundance of Boophilus microplus was found to be at the end of March 1987 with a mean of 36 females per side of cow. The peak numbers of A. cajennense (20 ticks), A. neumanni (12 ticks) and A. parvum (nine ticks) were found in December 1987, July 1987 and November 1988, respectively. The peak of Boophilus microplus was detected while cattle were on natural grasses in deforested habitats, peaks of other tick species were found when cattle were on natural grasses in forested habitats. The maximum cattle infestations with Amblyomma larvae (34% of cattle, May 1987) and nymphs (100%, August 1987) were detected while cattle were on natural grasses in forested habitats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Three trials were performed to test the infectivity of a vaccinal and a pathogenic strain of Babesia bovis for the tick Boophilus microplus. The progeny of engorged female ticks fed on calves inoculated with the pathogenic strain were able to transmit the infection to splenectomised calves (measured by the presence of the parasite in their blood and seroconversion), whereas the progeny of engorged females fed on calves inoculated with the vaccinal strain did not transmit the organisms. These results appear to show that this strain of Babesia bovis would not be transmitted by ticks under natural conditions. This is a considerable advantage since the organisms used in the vaccine would not be able to establish foci in the field although they would be able to confer a long-lasting immunity.

Abstract
Gas chromatography has been used to analyze the variation in cuticular hydrocarbon patterns between several populations of Amblyomma cajennense. 88 compounds were detected and these could be divided into 17 groups of hydrocarbons. Heterozygosis in the populations ranges from 0% to 25.84%. Isomers for pentacosane, heptacosane and nonatriacontane are the most variable, with 13, 10 and 11 variants, respectively. Nei's genetic identity and genetic distance show that populations may be considered as regional variants of only one species: the results do not indicate the presence of sibling species. However, a relatively high genetic distance has been observed between several Cuban and continental populations, suggesting a long reproductive isolation. Gas chromatography of cuticular hydrocarbons is a good alternative to isozyme analysis for population studies, when collecting conditions do not allow the use of live ticks and only alcohol-preserved collections are available. The high number of compounds available for genetic studies will provide excellent markers for evaluating the extent of gene flow and migration of tick species.
