Abstract
Background: Exposure to the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been identified as one of the most critical risk factors for Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Interferons and direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have been used to treat HCV infection with high rates (95%) of prolonged virological response, a suitable safety profile, and good compliance rates. Methods: We obtained information from Taiwan's Health and Welfare Data Science Center. (HWDSC). In this observational cohort research, patients with HCV who received a diagnosis in Taiwan between 2011 and 2018 were included. Results: 78,300 untreated HCV patients were paired for age, sex, and index date with 39,150 HCV patients who received interferon or DAAs treatment. Compared to the control group, the Interferon or DAAs treatment sample has fewer low-income individuals and more hospitalization requirements. The percentage of kidney illness was reduced in the therapy group compared to the control group, but the treatment group had a greater comorbidity rate of gastric ulcers. Interferon or DAA therapy for HCV-infected patients can substantially lower mortality. All cancer diagnoses after HCV infection with interferon treatment aHR 95% CI = 0.809 (0.774-0.846), Sofosbuvir-based DAA aHR 95% CI = 1.009 (0.737-1.381) and Sofosbuvir free DAA aHR 95% CI = 0.944 (0.584-1.526) showing cancer-protective effects in the INF-treated cohort but not DAA. Conclusion: Following antiviral therapy, women appear to have a more substantial preventive impact than men against pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancer. Interferon or DAAs treatment effect was more significant in the cirrhotic group.

Abstract
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly referred to as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a common liver disease characterized by an abnormal buildup of fat in liver. This study aimed to investigate whether bioactive dipeptides mitigate high-fat and high-fructose corn syrup diet (HFFD)-induced MAFLD in C57BL/6J mice. Sixty male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into six groups. The naïve group (untreated) was fed a standard chow diet and other groups were fed with HFFD along with vehicle and bioactive dipeptides treatment throughout experiment period. The control group received vehicle, YF10 and YF50 groups received Tyr-Phe, 10 and 50 mg/kg/day, FY10 and FY50 groups received Phe-Tyr, 10 and 50 mg/kg/day. At the end of experiment, body weight was recorded, and glucose homeostasis was assessed. Mice were sacrificed and blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters. Further, liver, visceral fat pads, and other organs were acutely dissected, weighed, and processed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical changes were analyzed. Long-term HFFD feeding resulted in elevated body weight gain, liver weight, visceral adiposity, liver injury, fasting hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperlipidemia. It also increased severe hepatic steatosis, chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and lipid peroxidation. However, bioactive dipeptides dose-dependently alleviated these complications which are associated with MAFLD by modulating adipokines secretion and antioxidant defense system via upregulation of Nrf2/HO-1 expressions. This study highlights potential of bioactive dipeptides as a promising approach for prevention and/or treatment of MAFLD induced by HFFD, providing novel insights into alternative therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Major anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-sophoroside (318.1 mg/mL), and other minor copigments were identified in the ethanol extract of Hibiscus rosa sinensis. The extracts can be coelectrospun with polycaprolactone and polyethylene oxide into fiber mats and were sensitive to pH changes from 1 to 13 with a unique color code (ΔE > 5). The pH sensor was used to monitor shrimp quality under isothermal conditions to obtain the respective activation energy (Ea in kJ/mol) of the sensors' color-change response (20.2), measured pH (20.6), and trimethylamine nitrogen (24.6), indole (27.1), and total microbial counts (30.8). Together with the Pearson correlation coefficient, the results showed high correlations between the sensors' color change and other quality parameters (p < 0.001). The regression equation developed by conducting the kinetic analysis was also suitable for predicting shrimp quality at refrigeration temperatures (4-10 °C) and can be used as a marker to monitor shrimp quality by visually inspecting the item condition.

Abstract
Nafamostat mesylate (NM) causes apoptosis and suppresses metastasis of endocrine-resistant ER-positive breast cancer (ERPBC). Epigenetic downregulation of CDK4/CDK6 by NM in endocrine-resistant ERPBC via disruption of binding of H3K27Ac on promoter region. Combination of nafamostat mesylate and CDK4/6 inhibitor synergistically overcomes endocrine resistance of breast cancer. Nafamostat mesylate would be a well-efficient drug for endocrine-resistant ERPBC.
Breast cancer is common worldwide, and the estrogen receptor-positive subtype accounts for approximately 70% of breast cancer in women. Tamoxifen and fulvestrant are drugs currently used for endocrinal therapy. Breast cancer exhibiting endocrine resistance can undergo metastasis and lead to the death of breast cancer patients. Drug repurposing is an active area of research in clinical medicine. We found that nafamostat mesylate, clinically used for patients with pancreatitis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, acts as an anti-cancer drug for endocrine-resistant estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (ERPBC). Epigenetic repression of CDK4 and CDK6 by nafamostat mesylate induced apoptosis and suppressed the metastasis of ERPBC through the deacetylation of Histone 3 Lysine 27. A combination of nafamostat mesylate and CDK4/6 inhibitor synergistically overcame endocrine resistance in ERPBC. Nafamostat mesylate might be an essential adjuvant or alternative drug for the treatment of endocrine-resistant ERPBC due to the low cost-efficiency of the CDK4/6 inhibitor.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most severe chronic kidney diseases in diabetes and is the main cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) is a natural product with a variety of effects on pulmonary fibrosis. In this study, we examined the effects of PCA in C57BL/KS db/db male mice. Kidney morphology, renal function indicators, and Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining data were analyzed. The results revealed that treatment with PCA could reduce diabetic-induced renal dysfunction, as indicated by the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (db/m: 120.1 ± 46.1μg/mg, db/db: 453.8 ± 78.7 µg/mg, db/db + 30 mg/kg PCA: 196.6 ± 52.9 µg/mg, db/db + 60 mg/kg PCA: 163.3 ± 24.6 μg/mg, p < 0.001). However, PCA did not decrease body weight, fasting plasma glucose, or food and water intake in db/db mice. H&E staining data revealed that PCA reduced glomerular size in db/db mice (db/m: 3506.3 ± 789.3 μm2, db/db: 6538.5 ± 1818.6 μm2, db/db + 30 mg/kg PCA: 4916.9 ± 1149.6 μm2, db/db + 60 mg/kg PCA: 4160.4 ± 1186.5 μm2p < 0.001). Western blot and immunohistochemistry staining indicated that PCA restored the normal levels of diabetes-induced fibrosis markers, such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and type IV collagen. Similar results were observed for epithelial–mesenchymal transition-related markers, including fibronectin, E-cadherin, and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). PCA also decreased oxidative stress and inflammation in the kidney of db/db mice. This research provides a foundation for using PCA as an alternative therapy for DN in the future.

Abstract
Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with an antipathogenic activity. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that are ubiquitously expressed in cells. Endogenous miRNA may function as an innate response to block pathogen invasion. The miRNA expression profiles of both mice and humans after the ingestion of honeysuckle were obtained. Fifteen overexpressed miRNAs overlapped and were predicted to be capable of targeting three viruses: dengue virus (DENV), enterovirus 71 (EV71) and SARS-CoV-2. Among them, let-7a was examined to be capable of targeting the EV71 RNA genome by reporter assay and Western blotting. Moreover, honeysuckle-induced let-7a suppression of EV71 RNA and protein expression as well as viral replication were investigated both in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated that let-7a targeted EV71 at the predicted sequences using luciferase reporter plasmids as well as two infectious replicons (pMP4-y-5 and pTOPO-4643). The suppression of EV71 replication and viral load was demonstrated in two cell lines by luciferase activity, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, Western blotting and plaque assay. Furthermore, EV71-infected suckling mice fed honeysuckle extract or inoculated with let-7a showed decreased clinical scores and a prolonged survival time accompanied with decreased viral RNA, protein expression and virus titer. The ingestion of honeysuckle attenuates EV71 replication and related pathogenesis partially through the upregulation of let-7a expression both in vitro and in vivo. Our previous report and the current findings imply that both honeysuckle and upregulated let-7a can execute a suppressive function against the replication of DENV and EV71. Taken together, this evidence indicates that honeysuckle can induce the expression of let-7a and that this miRNA as well as 11 other miRNAs have great potential to prevent and suppress EV71 replication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents up to 20% of all breast cancers. This cancer lacks the expression of the estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. The current therapeutic strategy for patients with this subtype is the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy and surgery. Luteolin is a natural herbal flavonoid and a potential therapeutic candidate for multiple diseases. The use of a treatment that combines Chinese herbal medicine and western medicine is rising in Asia. PURPOSE The present study evaluates the effects and molecular mechanisms involved with luteolin treatment and evaluates whether this herb affects androgen receptor-positive breast cancer cell proliferation or metastasis. STUDY DESIGN In vitro evaluation of the effect of luteolin on androgen receptor-positive TNBC cell proliferation and metastasis METHODS: Cell viability analysis was used for the cytotoxicity test. Colony formation and Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) staining-based proliferation experiments were used for cell proliferation. Wound healing and transwell assays were used for in vitro migration/invasion. The RT-qPCR analysis was used for gene expression. Furthermore, ChIP-qPCR analysis was used for epigenetic modification of gene promoters. RESULTS Luteolin significantly inhibited the proliferation and metastasis of androgen receptor-positive TNBC. Furthermore, luteolin inactivated the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and reversed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The combination of luteolin and inhibitors of AKT/mTOR synergistically repressed an androgen receptor-positive TNBC cell proliferation and metastasis. Luteolin also downregulated MMP9 expression by decreasing the levels of the AKT/mTOR promoting H3K27Ac and H3K56A on the MMP9 promoter region. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that luteolin inhibited the proliferation and metastasis of androgen receptor-positive TNBC by regulating MMP9 expression through a reduction in the levels of AKT/mTOR-inducing H3K27Ac and H3K56Ac.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a severe, rapidly progressing disease which typically requires patients to undergo emergency surgical intervention. Despite advancements in surgical procedures, still, ATAAD remains a surgical emergency associated with high mortality. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare whether either ascending aorta replacement (AR) or total aortic arch replacement (TR) leads to improved short- and long-term clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search of PubMed, Embase, Science Direct, Web of Science, SciELO, BIOSIS, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were supplemented by searching through bibliographies of key articles. Thereafter, data on early and late prognostic factors were extracted. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 studies were performed to compare whether either AR or TR leads to a reduction in the risk of in-hospital and short-term mortality, postoperative complications, re-operation rate, and long-term mortality. RESULTS A total of 15 cohort studies (n = 2822 patients with ATAAD; AR with HA, partial arch = 1911, TR = 911) were deemed eligible and included in the meta-analysis. Compared with TR, AR led to a significantly lower risk of in-hospital mortality (RR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.61-0.96), shorter cardiopulmonary bypass time (CPB, mean difference = -53.09; 95% CI: -56.68--49.50), circulatory arrest time (CA, mean difference = -8.09; 95% CI: -9.04-7.15), and antegrade cerebral perfusion (ACP, mean difference = -28.62; 95% CI: -30.23--27.00). Differences in the incidence rates of neurological dysfunctions and renal dialysis were not significant. The pooled rate of aortic re-operation was lower in TR group (AR 7.6% vs. TR 5.3%), albeit not significantly (risk ratio = 1.39; 95% CI: 0.94-2.07; p = 0.10). CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate that AR is associated with a lower early mortality rate and shorter operative times overall. Nevertheless, the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing AR is comparable to that of patients undergoing TR. Further prospective follow-up data needs to be collected and analyzed to discern whether there are statistically significant differences in the risks of re-operation and long-term mortality between AR and TR procedures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics could be beneficial to health and some of them have shown to modulate immune responses. AIM The aim of this study is to investigate if the probiotic strains including Lactobacillus and Pediococcus strains are able to alleviate allergic reactions in an ovalbumin-induced airway allergy model. METHODS Lactobacillus multi-species preparation (LMP) was gavaged to BALB/c for total six weeks and BALB/c was challenged with ovalbumin in the last two weeks. A barometric whole-body plethysmography was used to assess enhanced pause (Penh) of airway hyperreactivity (AHR). Immunoglobulins (Ig) such as IgE, IgG1, IgG2a and cytokines such as IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-5, TNF-α and IL-13 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were assayed using ELISA kits. RESULTS The results showed this LMP significantly reduced Th2 cytokines and enhanced Th1 cytokines production. OVA-specific IgE and IgG1 was lower in the probiotics-treated mice whereas IgG2a was increased. Most importantly, this murine model showed LMP supplementation significantly reduced AHR. CONCLUSIONS Overall, this Lactobacillus multi-species preparation seemed to suppress OVA-sensitized airway hyperreactivity, thus serving as a possible candidate for therapeutic uses for allergic airway symptoms.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.), a traditional Chinese herb, has widely been used to treat pathogen infection. However, the underlying-mechanism remains elusive. AIMS OF THE STUDY To reveal the host microRNA (miRNA) profile with the anti-viral activity after honeysuckle treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Here we reveal the differentially expressed miRNAs by Solexa® deep sequencing from the blood of human and mice after the aqueous extract treatment. Among these overexpressed innate miRNAs both in human and mice, let-7a is able to target the NS1 region (nt 3313-3330) of dengue virus (DENV) serotypes 1, 2 and 4 predicated by the target predication software. RESULTS We confirmed that let-7a could target DENV2 at the predicated NS1 sequence and suppress DENV2 replication demonstrated by luciferase-reporter activity, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, Western blotting and plaque assay. ICR-suckling mice consumed honeysuckle aqueous extract either before or after intracranial injection with DENV2 showed decreased levels of NS1 RNA and protein expression accompanied with alleviated disease symptoms, decreased virus load, and prolonged survival time. Similar results were observed when DENV2-infected mice were intracranially injected with let-7a. CONCLUSION We reveal that honeysuckle attenuates DENV replication and related pathogenesis in vivo through induction of let-7a expression. This study opens a new direction for prevention and treatment of DENV infection through induction of the innate miRNA let-7a by honeysuckle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our previous clinical indicated that urinary cyclophilin A was a good marker for diabetic nephropathy. METHODS We used animal and cell models of diabetic nephropathy to examine the role of cyclophilin A in disease progression. RESULTS Significantly increased urinary cyclophilin A could be detected in db/db at the 8th week. Linagliptin (3mg/kg/day and 15mg/kg/day) could suppress urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine at the 8th and 16th week but only the high dose Linagliption could suppress cyclophilin A at the 8th week. Compared to 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, cyclophilin A was a stronger, earlier, and more sensitive marker. Immunohistochemical staining for cyclophilin A was also positive for db/db. In cell studies, oxidative stress and hyperglycemia could stimulate MES-13 and HK-2 cells to secrete cyclophilin A. Hyperglycemia stimulated HK-2 cells to secrete TGFβ1, which caused secretion of cyclophilin A. The secreted cyclophilin A further stimulated CD 147 to move outward from cytosol onto cell membrane in confocal microscopy, which was associated with the p38 MAPK pathway in the downstream. CONCLUSIONS Secreted cyclophilin A may play an important role in diabetic nephropathy in the mouse model and is associated with TGFβ1, CD 147, and the p38 MAPK pathway.

Abstract
Green tea is a widely consumed beverage known for its beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, and cardioprotective properties. Here, we administered epigallocatechin gallate fraction of green tea extract (EGTE) to mice for 6 weeks and examined the effects on the innate and adaptive immune responses by measuring phagocytic and natural killer (NK) cell activity, as well as antigen-specific proliferation, cytolysis, cytokine secretion, and antibody production. Our data show that EGTE administration increased NK cell cytolysis and peritoneal cell phagocytosis, as well as splenocyte proliferation and secretion of IL-2 and IFN-γ. Of note, EGTE treatment decreased the production antigen-specific IgE via increased the proportion of CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T lymphocytes in the spleen, suggesting that EGTE may play a role in regulating the allergic response.

Abstract
In the exposure process of photolithography, a free-form lens is designed and fabricated for UV-LED (Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diode). Thin film metallic glasses (TFMG) are adopted as UV reflection layers to enhance the irradiance and uniformity. The Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with high transmittance is used as the lens material. The 3-D fast printing is attempted to make the mold of the lens. The results show that the average irradiance can be enhanced by 6.5~6.7%, and high uniformity of 85~86% can be obtained. Exposure on commercial thick photoresist using this UV-LED system shows 3~5% dimensional deviation, lower than the 6~8% deviation for commercial mercury lamp system. This current system shows promising potential to replace the conventional mercury exposure systems.

Abstract
Hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome are related obesity, type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Here we investigated how the anti-inflammatory properties of lactoferrin can protect against the onset of hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome by using a murine model administered with high-fructose corn syrup. Our results show that a high-fructose diet stimulates intestinal bacterial overgrowth and increases intestinal permeability, leading to the introduction of endotoxin into blood circulation and liver. Immunohistochemical staining of Toll-like receptor-4 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin indicated that lactoferrin can modulate lipopolysaccharide-mediated inflammatory cascade. The important regulatory roles are played by adipokines including interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and adiponectin, ultimately reducing hepatitis and decreasing serum alanine aminotransferase release. These beneficial effects of lactoferrin related to the downregulation of the lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory cascade in the liver. Furthermore, lactoferrin reduced serum and hepatic triglycerides to prevent lipid accumulation in the liver, and reduced lipid peroxidation, resulting in 4-hydroxynonenal accumulation. Lactoferrin reduced oral glucose tolerance test and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance. Lactoferrin administration thus significantly lowered liver weight, resulting from a decrease in the triglyceride and cholesterol synthesis that activates hepatic steatosis. Taken together, these results suggest that lactoferrin protected against high-fructose corn syrup induced hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
In this study, the innate immuno-modulatory effects and anti-cancer action of arabinogalactan (AG), a derivative of a well-known orchid, Anoectochilus formosanus, were investigated. The innate immuno-modulatory effects of AG were determined in vitro using RAW 264.7 cells for microarray analysis, and in vivo using BALB/c mice administrated with AG at 5 and 15 mg/kg intra-peritoneally for 3 weeks. The anti-cancer activity of AG was evaluated by CT26 colon cancer-bearing BALB/c mice. The microarray analysis was performed to evaluate the innate immunity and demonstrated that AG significantly induced the expression of cytokines, chemokines, and co-stimulatory receptors, such as IL-1α, CXCL2, and CD69. An intraperitoneal injection of AG in mice increased the spleen weight, but not the body weight. The treatment of mitogen, LPS significantly stimulated splenocyte proliferation in AG treated groups. The AG treatment also promoted splenocyte cytotoxicity against YAC-1 cells and increased the percentage of CD3(+)CD8(+) cytotoxic T cells in innate immunity test. Our experiments revealed that AG significantly decreased both tumour size and tumour weight. Besides, AG increased the percentage of DC, CD3(+)CD8(+) T cells, CD49b(+)CD3(-) NK cells among splenocytes, and cytotoxicity activity in tumour-bearing mice. In addition, the immunohistochemistry of the tumour demonstrated that the AG treatments increased the tumour-filtrating NK and cytotoxic T-cell. These results demonstrated that AG, a polysaccharide derived from a plant source, has potent innate immuno-modulatory and anti-cancer activity. AG may therefore be used for cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract
Cancer has become one the most common causes of death in developed countries and has been defined as the medical challenge of our times. Accumulating evidence support the notion that prevention can be a major component of cancer control. Chemoprevention, a relatively new and promising strategy to prevent cancer, is defined as the use of natural and/or synthetic substances to block, reverse, or retard the process of carcinogenesis. Plant-based foods, containing significant amounts of bioactive phytochemicals, may provide desiderable health benefits beyond basic nutrition to reduce the process of cancer. In the last few years, proteins and peptides have become one group of nutraceuticals that show potential results in preventing the different stages of cancer including initiation, promotion, and progression. Lunasin is a 43- amino acid peptide identified in soybean and other plants whose anti-carcinogenic activity has been demonstrated both in in vitro and in vivo assays. Moreover, this peptide has been found to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that could contribute to its chemopreventive effects. Lunasin's bioactivity and its molecular mechanism(s) of actions are summarized in this review.

Abstract
Multispecies probiotics have been reported to be more effective than monostrain probiotics in health promoting for the host. In this study, 12 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were selected based on the level of induction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Their adherence to Caco-2 cells and inhibitory effects on Salmonella invasion of Caco-2 cells were compared. Strains with different probiotic properties were then combined and BALB/c mice were fed with LAB strains for 63 days; then the mice were challenged with Salmonella on day 64. For Salmonella-unchallenged mice that received a multistrain combination of LAB strains that have greater TNF-α production in macrophages, greater adherence and inhibit Salmonella invasion of Caco-2 cells to a greater extent, their peritoneal macrophages had greater phagocytic activity. For Salmonella-challenged mice, a significant reduction of Salmonella cells in the livers and spleens of the mice was observed 8 days post challenge. The addition of 12% skim milk powder together with LAB strain combinations significantly enhanced the reduction of Salmonella cells in the mice livers and spleens. In conclusion, we have shown that LAB strain combinations with particular probiotic properties when fed to mice can inhibit Salmonella invasion of the liver and spleen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is a rare skin disorder that occurs during pregnancy. It was previously associated with high maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity, but now has a better prognosis. CASE REPORT We report a case of a pregnant woman with IH who presented with generalized erythematous pustular eruptions in the 32nd week of gestation. The IH progressed rapidly, and gestational hypertension was observed in the 36th week. The lesions did not subside, despite treatment with corticosteroids and phototherapy. She delivered a healthy male baby via cesarean section in the 37th week. One month after her delivery, her skin returned to normal, except for residual pigmentation, with complete recovery 3 months postpartum. CONCLUSION An experienced medical team comprising obstetricians, dermatologists, perinatologists and neonatologists is critical to aggressively treat this life-threatening specific dermatosis of pregnancy and to prevent ensuing complications, such as fluid and electrolyte imbalance, secondary infection and placental insufficiency.

Abstract
Effect of dopants on the soft magnetic properties and high frequency characteristics of FeCoBM thin films (M = Ti, Nb, Hf, and Ta) have been studied. For (Fe0.55Co0.45)(100-x)B(x) (x = 5-15) thin films, with the increase of B content, the resistivity was increased because B could decrease the crystallinity of the films. The (Fe0.55Co0.45)90B10 thin film showed the optimum properties, where 4piM(s) = 16.1 kG, H(ce) = 64.2 Oe, H(ch) = 13.5 Oe, H(k) = 310 Oe and p = 338 microomega-cm. To reduce the coercivity of the film, the elements M, including Ti, Nb, Hf, and Ta, were selected to substitute for B in the FeCoB films. It was found that (Fe0.55Co0.45)90B6Ti2Nb2 thin film after annealing at a temperature of 200 degrees C for 30 min showed the optimal properties, where 4piM(s) = 15.8 kG, H(ce) = 4.8 Oe, H(ch) = 3.6 Oe, H(k) = 224 Oe and p = 290 microomega-cm. The theoretically calculated ferromagnetic resonance frequency of the developed films can be higher than 5 GHz.

Abstract
Magnetic properties and phase evolution of melt spun R9.5Fe(bal.)Ti2B10 (R = MM(A), MM(B), MM(C), Pr, Nd, Ce, and La) nanocomposites have been investigated. Based on the results for the X-ray diffraction and thermal magnetic analysis, only 2:14:1 and alpha-Fe phases appear for R = MM(A) and Pr, and an additional Fe3B phase is present for R = MM(B), MM(C), Nd, and Ce. Besides, the uniform fine grain size of 20-40 nm is almost unchanged for the ribbons with various rare earth elements. Accordingly, magnetic properties of MM9.5Fe(bal.)Ti2B10 nanocomposites are mainly dominated by the composition of Mischmetals or the rare earth elements adopted, and are consistent with the outcome for the combinations of magnetic properties of their corresponding R9.5Fe(bal.)Ti2B10 nanocomposites. In this study, the optimum magnetic properties of B(r) = 9.3 kG, (i)H(c) = 12.1 kOe and (BH)(max) = 18.0 MGOe can be achieved for MM(B)9.5Fe(bal.)Ti2B10 nanocomposites. They not only exhibit comparable magnetic properties to the commercial available powders but also reduce the original material cost effectively.

Abstract
Magnetic properties, phase evolution, and microstructure of melt spun Hf-substituted Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)(x)Cy (x = 5-9; y = 0-0.1) ribbons quenched at the wheel speed of 40 m/s are investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the main phases existed in Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)(x) ribbons are 1:5 phase for x = 5-5.5; 1:5 and 1:7 phases for x = 6; 1:7 phase for x = 6.5-7.5; 1:7 and 2:17 phases for x = 8; and only 2:17 phase for x = 8.5-9, respectively. For Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)(x) (x = 5-9) ribbons, the optimum magnetic properties of B(r) = 5.6 kG, (i)H(c)= 15.6 kOe and (BH)(max) = 7.1 MGOe are obtained for Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)6.5 ribbons. Furthermore, a slight amount of C addition in Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)(x) ribbons slightly modify phase constitution and effectively refine the grain size from 200-700 nm for C free ribbons to 10-70 nm, strengthening the exchange coupling effect between magnetic grains of the ribbons. As a result, magnetic properties are further improved. The magnetic properties of B(r) = 6.9 kG, (i)H(c) = 9.2 kOe and (BH)(max) = 10.0 MGOe can be achieved for Sm(Co0.97Hf0.03)7.5C0.1 nanocomposites.

Abstract
Overexpression of the Ha-ras(val12) oncogene has frequently been detected in primary and metastatic carcinomas. NM23 is a metastasis inhibition factor and plays a suppressive role in metastasis in many types of cancer. In this study, a stable NIH/3T3 cell line harboring an inducible Ha-ras(val12) oncogene (designated as 7-4) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) were used to clarify the inverse correlation between nm23 and Ha-ras expression both in vitro and in vivo. A derivative 7-4/Z-3 cell line harboring a β-galactosidase reporter gene was used to trace cell metastasis in a murine tumor model. The data presented here reveal that Ha-ras(val12) is able to cause cell morphological changes, induce tumor formation, and promote metastasis of tumor cells to the lungs. In mice with metastases, the immune surveillance against tumor formation was suppressed by Ha-ras(val12) overexpression through an increase in T-reg cells and a decrease of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cell populations. Our results suggest that the Ha-ras oncogene regulates morphogenesis, tumorigenesis, and metastasis through suppressing nm23 expression and modulation of immune cell function.

Abstract
Longitudinal study of 16,936 Harvard alumni, followed for life-style experiences as related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and longevity, identified 572 first coronary heart disease (CHD) attacks, 1962-1972, and 1,413 all-cause deaths, 1962-1978. Men expending 8.4+ MJ (2,000+ kcal) per week in walking, stair-climbing, and sports play were at 39% lower risk of developing CHD than less active classmates. Attributable risk estimates suggested: there might have been 16% fewer CVD deaths in the alumni population if every man had exercised 8.4+ MJ per week; 25% fewer from total cigarette abstinence; 9% fewer from abolition of hypertension; 6% fewer with less obesity; and 11% fewer CVD deaths in the absence of parental CHD. Discounting the influence of blood pressure status, cigarette habit, net weight gain since college, and parental history of early death, the more active alumni (39% of the population) are estimated to have lived on average one and one-quarter years longer than less active men.

Abstract
We investigated the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of c-axis oriented orthorhombic phase HoMnO(3) (o-HMO in Pbnm symmetry setting) thin films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO(3)(001) substrates. The o-HMO films exhibit an antiferromagnetic ordering near 42 K, irrespective of the orientation of the applied field. However, an additional magnetic ordering occurring around 35 K was observed when the field was applied along the c-axis of o-HMO, which was absent when the field was applied in the ab-plane. The magnetocapacitance measured along the c-axis showed that although there is evidence of dielectric constant enhancement when the temperature is below 35 K the expected abrupt change in dielectric constant appears at a much lower temperature and reaches maximum around 13.5 K, indicating that the low-temperature c-axis polarization might be related to the ordering of the Ho(3+) moment. The lattice constant analyses using x-ray diffraction and the observation of a slight magnetization hysteresis suggest that the weak second magnetic transition along the c-axis at 35 K might be more relevant to the strain-induced effect on antiferromagnetism.

Abstract
We report on the formation of organized sub-micron YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) (YBCO) dots induced by irradiating femtosecond laser pulses on YBCO films prepared by pulse laser deposition with fluence in the range of 0.21 approximately 0.53 J/cm(2). The morphology of the YBCO film surface depends strongly on the laser fluences irradiated. At lower laser fluence (approximately 0.21 J/cm(2)) the morphology was pattern of periodic ripples with sub-micrometer spacing. Slightly increasing the laser fluence to 0.26 J/cm(2) changes the pattern into organized sub-micron dots with diameters ranging from 100 nm to 800 nm and height of 150 nm. Further increase of the laser fluence to over 0.32 J/cm(2), however, appeared to result in massive melting and led to irregular morphology. The mechanism and the implications of the current findings will be discussed. Arrays of YBCO sub-micron dots with T(c) = 89.7 K were obtained.

Abstract
AIM Solanum nigrum (Solanaceae) has been used in traditional folk medicine for its hepatoprotective agent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Solanum nigrum extract (SNE) on thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hepatic fibrosis was produced by TAA (0.2 g/kg, i.p.) three times a week for 12 weeks. Mice in the three TAA groups were treated daily with distilled water and SNE (0.2 or 1.0 g/kg) via gastrogavage throughout the experimental period. RESULTS SNE reduced the hepatic hydroxyproline and alpha-smooth muscle actin protein levels of TAA-treated mice. SNE inhibited TAA-induced collagene (alpha1)(I) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) mRNA levels in the liver. Histological examination also confirmed that SNE reduced the degree of fibrosis caused by TAA treatment. CONCLUSION Oral administration of SNE significantly reduces TAA-induced hepatic fibrosis in mice, probably through the reduction of TGF-beta1 secretion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Rhabdomyoma, the most common primary fetal cardiac tumor, is often associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). We aimed to evaluate outcome in cases diagnosed with fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma. METHODS This study presents 11 cases with fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma. In addition, all relevant published cases of antenatally diagnosed cardiac rhabdomyoma since 1982 were identified from MEDLINE. We evaluated the following risk factors associated with clinical impact and perinatal outcome: family history of TS, gestational age at diagnosis, tumor size, site and number of tumors, tumor progression, and associated intracardiac and extracardiac anomalies. RESULTS In this meta-analysis, 138 cases, including nine newly added by us, were categorized into Group A (107 live babies) and Group B (16 neonatal deaths and 15 intrauterine fetal deaths). Univariate analysis showed that large cardiac tumors (P < 0.0001), fetal dysrhythmia (P < 0.0001) and hydrops (P < 0.0001) were strong predictors of neonatal outcome. Tumor size >or= 20 mm (relative risk (RR), 20.6; 95% CI, 2.2-195.9; P = 0.009) and fetal dysrhythmia (RR, 13.6; 95% CI, 2.9-62.3; P = 0.001) were significantly associated with neonatal morbidity. TS, present in 85/133 (63.9%) cases, was significantly associated with multiple cardiac tumors (P < 0.0001) and family history of TS (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS Large tumor size and hydrops are significantly associated with poor neonatal outcome, whereas family history of TS and multiple fetal cardiac tumors are associated with TS. Any sonographic detection of a fetal cardiac tumor should warrant further investigation for the possible presence of associated disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer survivors experience muscular weakness and reduced mobility, thereby compromising quality of life. This investigation utilized moderate prescriptive exercise to improve upper- and lower-body muscular fitness, flexibility, depression and quality of life in cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and thirty-five breast and prostate cancer survivors received cancer and medical history screening and a medical examination, as well as assessments of muscular strength (handgrip dynamometer) and endurance (bench press, lateral pull-down, leg press, shoulder press and curl-up crunch test), flexibility (Modified Sit and Reach), depression (Beck Depression Inventory) and quality of life (Quality of Life Index). Following the exercise assessments, cancer survivors trained in resistance exercise for 6 months during treatment or following treatment based on their results from the assessments and health status. RESULTS Cancer survivors following treatment showed significant (P = 0.006) improvements in upper-body muscular endurance (+46.8%), lower-body muscular endurance (+67.1%), core muscular endurance (+32.5%) and flexibility (+6.2%), with concomitant improvements (P = 0.013) in depression (-25.6%) and total quality of life (+7.2%). Cancer survivors during treatment showed significant (P = 0.012) improvements in upper-body muscular endurance (+79.1%) and lower-body muscular endurance (+49.7%) while maintaining core endurance and flexibility in conjunction with improvements (P = 0.022) in depression (-43.0%) and quality of life (+11.5%). CONCLUSIONS Moderate-intensity individualized prescriptive exercise is a safe and efficacious means to augment muscular function and improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.

Abstract
This study provides in vitro and in vivo evaluation of rat serum metabolites of the Pueraria lobata (SMP) on peripheral nerve regeneration. In the in vitro study, we found that the SMP caused a marked enhancement of the nerve growth factor (NGF)-mediated neurite outgrowth and the expression of synapsin I from PC12 cells. In the in vivo study, silicone rubber chambers filled with the SMP were used to bridge a 10-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. At the conclusion of 8 weeks, animals from the groups treated with the SMP had a relatively more mature structure with larger mean values of myelinated axon number, endoneurial area, and total nerve area when compared with those in the controls receiving the saline only. These results suggest that the serum metabolites of Pueraria lobata can be a potential nerve growth-promoting factor.

Abstract
Previous work has considered the effect of exposure misclassification on the bias of population attributable risk (AR) estimates, but little is known about the corresponding effects on their precision or mean squared error (MSE). This paper considers AR estimation in typical scenarios for case-control and cohort studies. The analogous index used when exposure reduces the risk--the prevented fraction (PF)--is also investigated. It is shown, through both theoretical and simulation results, that even with quite modest levels of exposure misclassification, the MSE can increase substantially, relative to the variance of AR estimated without measurement error. When exposure assessment is perfectly sensitive, there is no bias in AR but lack of measurement specificity can still cause a substantial loss of precision. In a few cases, the AR or PF with misclassified exposure can actually have smaller MSE; these exceptional cases arise when sensitivity is poor and the bias in AR or PF is relatively large. We conclude that while bias can be reduced by defining exposure on a highly sensitive basis, one must also consider the deleterious effect on precision by doing so. Loss of precision in the AR and PF estimates can be safely ignored only when the exposure measure is very accurate.

Abstract
The 3C-like protease (3CLpro) of SARS-coronavirus mediates the proteolytic processing of replicase polypeptides 1a and 1ab into functional proteins, becoming an important target for the drug development. In this study, Isatis indigotica root extract, five major compounds of I. indigotica root, and seven plant-derived phenolic compounds were tested for anti-SARS-CoV 3CLpro effects using cell-free and cell-based cleavage assays. Cleavage assays with the 3CLpro demonstrated that IC50 values were in micromolar ranges for I. indigotica root extract, indigo, sinigrin, aloe emodin and hesperetin. Sinigrin (IC50: 217 microM) was more efficient in blocking the cleavage processing of the 3CLpro than indigo (IC50: 752 microM) and beta-sitosterol (IC50: 1210 microM) in the cell-based assay. Only two phenolic compounds aloe emodin and hesperetin dose-dependently inhibited cleavage activity of the 3CLpro, in which the IC50 was 366 microM for aloe emodin and 8.3 microM for hesperetin in the cell-based assay.

Abstract
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) causes chronic hepatitis, featuring an increase in hepatic hydroxyproline, spleen weight and serum GPT levels and a decrease in plasma albumin levels. Crude extracts of fresh whole plants of Anoectochilus formosanus showed inhibition of chronic hepatitis induced by CCl(4) in mice. Bioactivity-guided fractionation and spectroscopic analysis revealed that kinsenoside was the most active compound. In an in vitro study, the LD(50) values for H(2)O(2)-induced cytotoxicity in BALB/c normal liver cells were significantly higher after kinsenoside pretreatment than after vehicle alone, further confirming that kinsenoside shows significant antihepatotoxic activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated the outcome of fetuses diagnosed with having congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) on ultrasonographic examination and managed conservatively. METHODS A retrospective study of 19 cases of CCAM diagnosed antenatally in our hospital was conducted between 1990 and 2001. Complete clinical information was available for all patients, with a mean follow-up of 62 months. RESULTS The median gestational age at which CCAM was diagnosed was 23 weeks and there were eight live births. With conservative postnatal management, seven neonates had no major complications and one developed bronchopneumonia. CONCLUSION Taken together, the findings of the present study and a review of the literature strongly support the conservative management of selected neonates with CCAM.

Abstract
1. The present study examined the effects of an aqueous extract of Anoectochilus formosanus (AFE) on both hepatic fibrosis and regeneration in rats. 2. Fibrosis was induced by intraperitoneal injection of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) for 3 consecutive days per week for 4 weeks. 3. In DMN-treated rats, liver cirrhosis-associated complications, such as liver atrophy, low concentrations of serum albumin and the accumulation of hepatic collagen, were observed. The AFE protected the liver against DMN-induced fibrosis, as determined by morphological and biochemical observations. 4. In addition, AFE was administered to two-thirds hepatectomized normal and DMN-injured rats. Three and 5 days after hepatectomy, AFE increased the extent of liver weight regeneration and the number of S-phase cells in DMN-injured rats, but not in normal rats. 5. These results show that AFE seems to be useful in the repair of liver injury, improvement of fibrotic changes and promotion of liver regeneration.

Abstract
During the past decade, we encountered an increasing number of young patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma. It is not clear whether young patients have more aggressive course and worse prognosis. Our aim was to compare clinicopathological characteristics/treatment results of patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma who were < or = 50 and > 50 years of age. We studied 263 consecutive patients with resectable esophageal adenocarcinoma: 32 (12.1%) were < or = 50 years old. Dysphagia was present in 69 per cent of patients < or = 50 years old and in 48 per cent of older patients (P = 0.019). The median duration of dysphagia was 3.5 months in younger patients compared to 2 months in patients > 50 years (P < 0.0001). Seven of 22 (31.8%) young and three of 108 (2.8%) older patients with dysphagia reported dysphagia for > or = 6 months (P < 0.0001). Fifty per cent of younger patients were stage III/IV and > 70 per cent were node positive (P = 0.04 and P = 0.02 vs patients > 50 years, respectively). Five-year survival was 32.6 per cent for < or = 50 years and 45.5 per cent for > 50 years. More than 10 per cent of esophageal adenocarcinoma patients undergoing surgery are now < or = 50 years of age. They usually present with dysphagia, are symptomatic for a longer time before diagnosis, and have more advanced disease compared to older patients. With appropriate aggressive treatment, survival is similar. Liberal use of endoscopy and aggressive diagnostic approach are paramount in young patients with dysphagia/symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the impact of image magnification in the measurements of crown-rump length (CRL) and nuchal translucency (NT) thickness for first-trimester Down syndrome screening in Asians. METHODS Ultrasound measurements of NT and CRL were performed in 561 consecutive Taiwanese unaffected fetuses and 11 cases of Down syndrome fetuses between 12 and 14 weeks of gestation. All sonographic images were measured by one qualified examiner to prospectively undergo first-trimester NT screening for Down syndrome. Fetal CRL and NT thickness were measured on three separated images including the original image, regular image, and the magnified image. RESULTS A significant mean difference (0.59 +/- 4.24 mm) of CRL was found between measurements on the original and regular image (p < 0.001). There was a significant mean difference of NT thickness measurements between the regular and magnified image (0.12 +/- 0.25 mm, p < 0.001). Seven out of the 11 cases (63.6%) of Down syndrome with NT thickness > or =2.5 mm was measured on three separated images. A significantly reduced incidence of NT thickness > or =2.5 mm on the magnified image was noted than those of the original and regular image measurements in unaffected cases (p < 0.001). Either using the assessing method by the 95th centile cutoff value of NT thickness or combined risk, our results could achieve observed detection rate of 63.6% measured on three separated images. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that the image magnification could reduce the false-positive rate by using a fixed cutoff value of NT thickness, but would have no influence on the results when using the assessing method either by the 95th centile cutoff value of NT thickness or the combined risk. In order to place the caliper more accurately, a magnified image should be recommended as a standard image in the measurements of the NT thickness.

Abstract
AIM The 20-year period long-term results of porcine bioprosthetic valve use are limited. In addition, the majority of these reports come from Western countries. Given the scanty information reported in Oriental countries, this study was therefore designed to examine 20-year long-term results in patients who received a Carpentier-Edwards porcine bioprosthetic valve in an effort to contribute further information on the long-term clinical performance of porcine prosthetic valves from a viewpoint of results in the Oriental population. METHODS From July 1979 to April 2001, 82 patients received valve replacement with a standard Carpentier-Edwards porcine valve. There were 40 men and 42 women with a mean age of 42.3+/-15.1 years (range 16 to 73 years). Follow-up time extended more than 20 years (mean 10.9+/-3.2 years, range 0.5 to 21.5 years ) for a total of 719.5 patient-years. RESULTS The overall operative mortality was 16.9% (14 of 83 procedures). At 5, 10, 15, and 20 years, the actuarial survival rate of patients was 71.7%, 66.9%, 55.5%, and 44.4%, respectively. Actuarial estimates of freedom from structural valvular deterioration (SVD) at 5, 10, 15, and 17 years were 96.3%, 64.0%, 24.3%, and 24.3%, respectively; from reoperation 96.3%, 64.5%, 24.5%, and 24.5%; from operated valvular endocarditis 96.8%, 92.6%, 92.6%, and 92.6%; and from overall thromboembolism 96.3%, 88.5%, 67.2%, and 52.2%. In normal sinus rhythm, actuarial estimates of freedom from thromboembolism at 5, 10, 15, and 17 years were 100.0%, 100.0%, 81.8%, and 81.8%, respectively. Whereas for those in patients with atrial fibrillation, the estimates of freedom from thromboembolism were 94.5%, 82.4%, 57.7%, and 38.5%. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the very satisfactory 20-year period long-term performance of freedom from bleeding events, thromboembolism (except in patients with atrial fibrillation), and valvular endocarditis in Oriental patients undergoing replacement with a porcine valve. However, the remarkable rate of SVD and reoperation ensued at 6 years after bioprosthesis implanted which does not differ from the series reported from Western countries.

Abstract
Dang-Gui-Bu-Xai-Tang (DGBXT), which includes Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Radix Astragali Membranaceus, is a traditional Chinese medicine used to modulate the lymphocyte activity of cancer patients after chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the present study, we examined the cytotoxicity of DGBXT on transformed cells and the immunomodulating effects of DGBXT in a tumor-bearing murine model. DGBXT markedly inhibited the growth of the EJ-Ha-ras transformed LZEJ and LZEJ-C2 cells lines. Oral administration of DGBXT for three weeks significantly prevented the tumor development in mice that injected with LZEJ-C2 cells subcutaneously. Moreover, DGBXT effectively increased the population of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and NK cells, and down-regulated activated T helper cells (CD4+/CD25+) in spleen and tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLN). Furthermore, DGBXT stimulated the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in in vitro cultured splenocytes. These results might explain the antitumor effects of DGBXT.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although a number of tools have been developed to measure 'quality of life' in patients with malignant glioma, there remains no completely satisfactory technique that incorporates a quality of life measure into survival analysis. We propose that a patient's ability to maintain independent activity offers a way to accomplish this goal. PATIENTS AND METHODS An independent living score (ILS) is generated by awarding points on a monthly basis based on Karnofsky score and weighing the score based on the particular month of the clinical course. The ILS has a large range for any given survival, and can discriminate important treatment effects to which standard survival analyses are completely insensitive. Using this score and several variations, we were able to retrospectively analyze a patient cohort to assess what correlated with ILS. RESULTS We found a strong correlation with survival of all the measures tested. Interestingly, we found that patients for whom a total resection was performed and those who were most intensively treated had significantly higher ILS values, suggesting that not only did more aggressive treatment improve survival but that it did not simply increase survival at the expense of the time a patient remained independent. CONCLUSION Since the general course for patients with malignant glioma is one of increasing disability and loss of independence, we feel that these measures can serve as a way to distinguish between those therapies that increase survival at the expense of quality of life versus those that do not. Consideration should be given to incorporating these measures into prospective trials.

Abstract
This retrospective study sought to determine the characteristics of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections in patients younger than 18 years without known risk factors who were treated at a teaching hospital in central Taiwan. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected from medical charts. Possible risk factors included hospitalization within the past 6 months, transfer from other hospitals or nursing homes, and having underlying illness. A total of 173 isolates of community-acquired S. aureus were analyzed. Seventeen (9.8%) of these 173 isolates were methicillin-resistant S. aureus collected from patients without risk factors, 31 (17.9%) were methicillin-resistant S. aureus from patients with risk factors, and the other 125 (72.3%) were methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. Most isolates of community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus collected from patients without risk factors (14/17, 82.4%) were obtained from the infected wounds of skin or soft tissues. Only 4 (23.5%) in 17 patients with isolates resistant to methicillin were prescribed antimicrobial therapy with glycopeptides. Nevertheless, all patients recovered without any long-term sequelae. These results highlight the fact that community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections occur frequently in Taiwan among patients who have no established risk factors for this infection.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of acupuncture on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced acute liver injury in male rats (n=36). The experimental groups were injected with CCl4 before, during, or after acupuncture therapy. Acupoints similar to the human Tsu-San-Li (St-36) and Tai-Chung (Li-3) were needled bilaterally. Rats treated with CCl4 had higher levels of serum glutamate-oxalate-transaminase (sGOT) and serum glutamate-pyruvate-transaminase (sGPT). Comparing the experimental groups, biochemical and pathological parameters of liver injury were significantly reduced when rats were acupunctured after, not before, CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity. Acupuncture at the Tsu-San-Li and Tai-Chung acupoints cannot prevent acute liver injury but may be effective in treating liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats.

Abstract
The stability of styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer (SDB)-supported Pt (Pt/SDB) catalysts for destruction of volatile-organic-compound (VOC) in wastewater was examined. The test reaction was wet oxidation of water-containing aliphatic alcohol and formaldehyde at 140 degrees C and 90 psig for 40 h. The catalytic performance tests indicated that activity of the Pt/SDB catalysts could be maintained for VOC concentration of 3 wt.%, whereas the catalysts deactivated rapidly for 10 wt.% VOC containing wastewater. In order to investigate the nature of catalyst deactivation, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) spectroscopy were used to characterize the fresh and used catalysts. After the reaction, there is no oxidation of Pt clusters observed in EXAFS and XANES spectroscopy suggesting that the oxidation reaction takes places via the adsorbed oxygen. The spectroscopy results further indicated that deactivation of the catalysts were mainly caused by the increase of Pd particle size. After the reaction, the Pt-Pt coordination number has no significant change for the 3 wt.% wastewater whereas increase from 5.6 to 6.2 for 10 wt.% wastewater. Combined with the fact that the catalysts fractured during the reactions, we suggested that Pt agglomeration was mainly caused by thermal migration of the metal clusters.

Abstract
Increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been proposed to cause endothelial injury, and oxidized LDL (oxLDL) actions are associated with an early increase of ROS. Estrogen protects vascular cells partly via its antioxidant effects and by preventing lipid peroxidation. However, whether it can inhibit oxLDL-induced stimulation of ROS generation in endothelial cells is unknown. We utilized the fluorescent dye (DCFH-DA) to measure ROS generation and compared the stimulant effect of tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBH) and oxLDL in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). We found that TBH, H2O2, and oxLDL rapidly stimulated ROS generation, and in a dose-dependent manner with TBH. A concentration of estrogen effective in preventing lipid peroxidation was employed either by pretreatment of cells 18 h prior to or by direct co-incubation (30 min) with HUVEC and oxLDL. Estrogen (54 microM) pretreatment significantly suppressed both TBH- and oxLDL- induced stimulation of ROS generation. Both 1 and 54 microM concentration of estrogen could directly inhibit oxLDL-induced ROS production in HUVECs. Thus, either 18 h pretreatment or 30 min co-incubation with estrogen reduced stimulated ROS generation, suggesting that both cellular and direct actions of estrogen may be involved.

Abstract
Considerable progress has been made in improving the control of chemotherapy-induced emesis. The impact of available antiemetic options for patients receiving stem cell transplants is unclear, as few prospective data have been collected. We prospectively evaluated antiemetic outcome in patients receiving stem cell transplantation over a 7-day period following the initiation of chemotherapy. The primary endpoints were the number of emetic episodes and the extent of nausea measured on a four-point scale. Eighty-two patients were evaluated. Ninety-five percent of patients had nausea during the first week of treatment; 80% had at least one emetic episode. The percentage of patients with emesis was as follows: day 1: 13%, day 2: 21%, day 3: 30%, day 4: 38%, day 5: 44%, day 6: 39%, day 7: 18%. In multivariate analysis, gender, emesis with prior chemotherapy, history of morning or motion sickness, type of transplant (auto vs allo), use of total body irradiation, or use of dexamethasone did not effect emesis control. Most patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy experience incompletely controlled emesis. Control of nausea and emesis progressively worsened with each subsequent day following initiation of chemotherapy, reaching a nadir on day 5. New treatment approaches are needed to improve emesis control in this patient population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xiao-qing-long-tang (XQLT sho-seiru-to), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat patients with bronchial asthma in Oriental countries for several centuries. However, the therapeutic mechanisms of this Chinese medicine remain a matter of considerable debate. Therefore, a series of experiments using ovalbumin-sensitized guinea pigs was performed to elucidate the possible antiasthmatic effect of XQLT. METHODS The effect of XQLT on ovalbumin-induced airway inflammation in a guinea pig model of allergic asthma was examined, and early and late asthmatic responses were measured in terms of airway resistance and extent of eosinophil infiltration. Furthermore, the bronchorelaxing effect of XQLT was measured in isolated guinea pig trachea. RESULTS XQLT significantly inhibited the antigen-induced immediate asthmatic response (IAR) and late asthmatic response (LAR) in actively sensitized guinea pigs. Cumulative administration of XQLT caused concentration-dependent relaxation of the carbachol-precontracted guinea pig trachea. The bronchorelaxing effect of XQLT was reversed by ICI-118551, a selective beta2-adrenoceptor antagonist. Furthermore, examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) revealed that XQLT significantly suppressed the increase in eosinophils (24 h after antigen challenge) in the airway. In addition, XQLT significantly attenuated the increase in eosinophils at 1, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after antigen challenge when it was administered once daily from the day of sensitization to the day of challenge. Histopathologic examination results showed that XQLT suppressed eosinophil infiltration into lung tissue. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that the antiasthmatic effects of XQLT appear to be partly mediated by stimulation of beta2-adrenoceptors, leading to bronchorelaxation, and that XQLT inhibits the infiltration of eosinophils into the airway. Thus, XQLT may be useful for the prevention or treatment of asthma.
