Deep Learning-Based Feature Extraction of Acoustic Emission Signals for Monitoring Wear of Grinding Wheels

Tool wear monitoring is a critical issue in advanced manufacturing systems. In the search for sensing devices that can provide information about the grinding process, Acoustic Emission (AE) appears to be a promising technology. The present paper presents a novel deep learning-based proposal for grinding wheel wear status monitoring using an AE sensor. The most relevant finding is the possibility of efficient feature extraction form frequency plots using CNNs. Feature extraction from FFT plots requires sound domain-expert knowledge, and thus we present a new approach to automated feature extraction using a pre-trained CNN. Using the features extracted for different industrial grinding conditions, t-SNE and PCA clustering algorithms were tested for wheel wear state identification. Results are compared for different industrial grinding conditions. The initial state of the wheel, resulting from the dressing operation, is clearly identified for all the experiments carried out. This is a very important finding, since dressing strongly affects operation performance. When grinding parameters produce acute wear of the wheel, the algorithms show very good clustering performance using the features extracted by the CNN. Performance of both t-SNE and PCA was very much the same, thus confirming the excellent efficiency of the pre-trained CNN for automated feature extraction from FFT plots.

The impact of water vapor on the OH reactivity toward CH3CHO at ultra-low temperatures (21.7-135.0 K): Experiments and theory

The role of water vapor (H2O) and its hydrogen-bonded complexes in the gas-phase reactivity of organic compounds with hydroxyl (OH) radicals has been the subject of many recent studies. Contradictory effects have been reported at temperatures between 200 and 400 K. For the OH + acetaldehyde reaction, a slight catalytic effect of H2O was previously reported at temperatures between 60 and 118 K. In this work, we used Laval nozzle expansions to reinvestigate the impact of H2O on the OH-reactivity with acetaldehyde between 21.7 and 135.0 K. The results of this comprehensive study demonstrate that water, instead, slows down the reaction by factors of ∼3 (21.7 K) and ∼2 (36.2-89.5 K), and almost no effect of added H2O was observed at 135.0 K.

Biomass fuel production from cellulosic sludge through biodrying: Aeration strategies, quality of end-products, gaseous emissions and techno-economic assessment

This study assesses the technological, environmental and economic feasibility of biodrying to valorise cellulosic sludge as a renewable energy source. Specifically, three different aeration strategies were compared in terms of biodrying performance, energetic consumption, gaseous emissions, quality of end-products and techno-economic analysis. These strategies were based on different combinations of convective drying with biogenic heat produced. Two innovative biodrying performance indicators (Energetic Biodrying Index and Biodrying Performance Index) were proposed to better assess the initial and operational conditions that favour the maximum energy process efficiency and the highest end-product quality. The end-products obtained consistently presented moisture contents below 40% and lower heating values above 9.4 MJ·kg-1. However, the best values achieved were 32.6% and 10.4 MJ·kg-1 for moisture content and lower heating value, respectively. Low N₂O and CH₄ emissions confirmed the effective aeration of all three strategies carried out, while NH₄ and tVOCs were related either to temperature or biological phenomena. A techno-economic analysis proved the economic viability and attractiveness of the biodrying technology for cellulosic sludge in all the strategies applied.

Characteristics of dual carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains from an outbreak in Venezuela: a retrospective study

Objective.

To characterize carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from patients treated at a hospital in Cumaná, Sucre, Venezuela.

Methods.

This was a retrospective study conducted at the general hospital in Cumaná where 58 K. pneumoniae strains were analyzed for resistance to antimicrobials, specifically carbapenems, in January – June 2015. Production of metallo-β-lactamases and serine carbapenemases was determined by the double-disc synergy test, using EDTA-sodium mercaptoacetic acid and 3-aminophenyl boronic acid discs, respectively. Multiplex-PCR was used to detect genes coding for carbapenemases. Molecular typing using ERIC-PCR determined the presence of clones.

Results.

Four strains of K. pneumoniae resistant to carbapenems were identified. Phenotypic methods for detection of metallo-β-lactamases and serine carbapenemases were positive, and PCR demonstrated the co-presence of bla_NDM and bla_KPC genes in all four strains. ERIC-PCR identified two clones circulating in the hospital.

Conclusions.

Infection control strategies are needed at the central hospital in Cumaná and its surrounding areas to prevent the spread of these pathogens, especially given the high levels of migration from Venezuela to other countries in South America.

Seroprevalence of HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 and correlates of exposure in unvaccinated women aged 16-64 years in Puerto Rico

Background

To understand risk factors for HPV exposure in Puerto Rican women, we evaluated HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 serology in women aged living in the San Juan metropolitan area.

Methods

As part of a cross-sectional study, a population-based sample of 524 HPV unvaccinated Hispanic women ages 16–64 years completed face-to-face and computer assisted interviews and provided blood and self-collected anal and cervical specimens. Serology used multiplex virus-like particle based-IgG ELISA and HPV DNA was detected with L1-consensus PCR.

Results

32% and 47% were seropositive to HPV types included in the bivalent (16/18) and quadrivalent (6/11/16/18) vaccines, respectively. Type-specific seroprevalence was HPV6 − 29%, HPV11 − 18%, HPV16 − 23%, and HPV18 − 17%; seroprevalence was high in the youngest age-group (16–19: 26–37%). HPV seropositivity was associated with having ≥ 3 lifetime sexual partners (OR=2.5, 95% CI=1.7–3.9) and detection of anogenital HPV DNA (OR=1.8, 95% CI=1.2–2.6).

Conclusions

The high cumulative exposure of HPV vaccine types 6/11/16/18 in this Hispanic population was influenced by factors related to HPV exposure through sexual behavior. High seroprevalence in the youngest age-group indicates early age of exposure to HPV in Puerto Rico, highlighting the need for HPV vaccination starting prior to age 16.

Haptic simulation of tissue tearing during surgery

We present a method for the real-time, interactive simulation of tissue tearing during laparoscopic surgery. The method is designed to work at haptic feedback rates (ie, around 1 kHz). Tissue tearing is simulated under the general framework of continuum damage mechanics. The problem is stated as a general, multidimensional parametric problem, which is solved by means of proper generalized decomposition methods. One of the main novelties is the reduction of history-dependent problems, such as damage mechanics, by resorting to an approach in which a reduced-order field of initial damage values is considered as a parameter of the formulation. We focus on the laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure as a general example of the performance of the method.

Uso de cascarilla de arroz durante el periodo de pre-montanera para dietas de bienestar. Resultados preliminares

En los sistemas de producción extensivos del cerdo Ibérico, la alimentación de los animales está restringida durante la premontanera. Con el propósito de incrementar el bienestar durante este periodo, tres dietas diferentes con niveles crecientes de fibra (5,0 %; 8,5 %; 12,0 %) procedentes de cascarilla de arroz, que es un subproducto infrautilizado, fueron evaluados en cerdo Ibérico durante la premontanera (desde los 9 a los 13 meses de edad). El bienestar animal fue evaluado mediante el test Welfare Quality©. Ninguno de los grupos de tratamientos tuvo problemas de diarrea, a pesar del contenido relativamente elevado en fibra de las dietas enriquecidas. El peso corporal al final de la premontanera no varió significativamente entre tratamientos. Sin embargo, la ganancia de peso desde el segundo mes del experimento hasta su conclusión fue significativamente superior en el grupo con el nivel de fibra más alto que en los otros 2 grupos. Por tanto, los resultados preliminares muestran que el uso de altos niveles de fibra (12 %) en dietas de cerdo Ibérico durante la premontanera podría ser usado para mejorar el bienestar animal en este periodo, lo que adicionalmente supondría un uso alternativo para este importante subproducto agrícola.

Sb and N Incorporation Interplay in GaAsSbN/GaAs Epilayers near Lattice-Matching Condition for 1.0-1.16-eV Photonic Applications

As promising candidates for solar cell and photodetection applications in the range 1.0-1.16 eV, the growth of dilute nitride GaAsSbN alloys lattice matched to GaAs is studied. With this aim, we have taken advantage of the temperature gradient in the molecular beam epitaxy reactor to analyse the impact of temperature on the incorporation of Sb and N species according to the wafer radial composition gradients. The results from the combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopies (EDS) show an opposite rate of incorporation between N and Sb as we move away from the centre of the wafer. A competitive behaviour between Sb and N in order to occupy the group-V position is observed that depends on the growth rate and the substrate temperature. The optical properties obtained by photoluminescence are discussed in the frame of the double-band anticrossing model. The growth conditions define two sets of different parameters for the energy level and the coupling interaction potential of N, which must be taken into account in the search for the optimum compositions 1-1.15-eV photonic applications.

Quantitative analysis of the interplay between InAs quantum dots and wetting layer during the GaAs capping process

A procedure to quantitatively analyse the relationship between the wetting layer (WL) and the quantum dots (QDs) as a whole in a statistical way is proposed. As we will show in the manuscript, it allows determining, not only the proportion of deposited InAs held in the WL, but also the average In content inside the QDs. First, the amount of InAs deposited is measured for calibration in three different WL structures without QDs by two methodologies: strain mappings in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images and compositional mappings with ChemiSTEM x-ray energy spectrometry. The area under the average profiles obtained by both methodologies emerges as the best parameter to quantify the amount of InAs in the WL, in agreement with high-resolution x-ray diffraction results. Second, the effect of three different GaAs capping layer (CL) growth rates on the decomposition of the QDs is evaluated. The CL growth rate has a strong influence on the QD volume as well as the WL characteristics. Slower CL growth rates produce an In enrichment of the WL if compared to faster ones, together with a diminution of the QD height. In addition, assuming that the QD density does not change with the different CL growth rates, an estimation of the average In content inside the QDs is given. The high Ga/In intermixing during the decomposition of buried QDs does not only trigger a reduction of the QD height, but above all, a higher impoverishment of the In content inside the QDs, therefore modifying the two most important parameters that determine the optical properties of these structures.

Oxidative stress prediction: A preliminary approach using a response surface based technique

A response surface was built to predict the lipid peroxidation level, generated in an iron-ascorbate in vitro model, of any organ, which is correlated with the oxidative stress injury in biological membranes. Oxidative stress studies are numerous, usually performed on laboratory animals. However, ethical concerns require validated methods to reduce the use of laboratory animals. The response surface described here is a validated method to replace animals. Tissue samples of rabbit liver, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle and brain were oxidized with different concentrations of FeCl₃ (0.1 to 8mM) and ascorbate (0.1mM), during different periods of time (0 to 90min) at 37°C. Experimental data obtained, with lipid content and antioxidant activity of each organ, allowed constructing a multidimensional surface capable of predicting, by interpolation, the lipid peroxidation level of any organ defined by its antioxidant activity and fat content, when exposed to different oxidant conditions. To check the predictive potential of the technique, two more experiments were carried out. First, in vitro oxidation data from lung tissue were collected. Second, the antioxidant capacity of kidney homogenates was modified by adding melatonin. Then, the response surface generated could predict lipid peroxidation levels produced in these new situations. The potential of this technique could be reinforced using collaborative databases to reduce the number of animals in experimental procedures.

In vitro osteoclastogenesis from Gaucher patients' cells correlates with bone mineral density but not with Chitotriosidase

Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by mutations on the gene encoding for the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Type I GD (GD1) patients present anemia, hepatosplenomegaly and bone alterations. In spite of treatment, bone alterations in GD patients persist, including poor bone mineral density (BMD). Mechanisms leading to bone damage are not completely understood, but previous reports suggest that osteoclasts are involved. Chitotriosidase (CHIT) is the most reliable biomarker used in the follow up of patients, although its correlation with bone status is unknown. The aim of this work was to study the pro-osteoclastogenic potential in patients and to evaluate its correlation with CHIT activity levels and clinical parameters. PBMCs from treated patients and healthy controls were cultured in the presence of M-CSF, and mature osteoclasts were counted. BMD, blood CHIT activity and serum levels of CTX, BAP, and cytokines were evaluated in patients. We found that blood CHIT activity and osteoclast differentiation were significantly increased in patients, but no correlation between them was observed. Interestingly, osteoclast numbers but not CHIT, presented a negative correlation with BMD expressed as Z-score. CTX, BAP and serum cytokines involved in bone remodeling were found altered in GD1 patients. These results show for the first time a correlation between osteoclast differentiation and BMD in GD1 patients, supporting the involvement of osteoclasts in the bone pathology of GD1. Our results also suggest that an altered immune response may play an important role in bone damage.

Evaluation of high-quality image reconstruction techniques applied to high-resolution Z-contrast imaging

High-quality image reconstruction techniques allow the generation of high pixel density images from a set of low-resolution micrographs. In general, these techniques consist of two main steps, namely, accurate registration, and formulation of an appropriate forward image model via some restoration method. There exist a wide variety of algorithms to cope with both stages and depending on their practical applications, some methods can outperform others, since they can be sensitive to the assumed data model, noise, drift, etc. When dealing with images generated by Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopes, a current trend is based on non-rigid approximations in the registration stage. In our work we aimed at reaching similar accuracy but addressing the most complex calculations in the reconstruction stage, instead of in the registration stage (as the non-rigid approaches do), but using a much smaller number of images. We review some of the most significant methods and address their shortcomings when they are applied to the field of microscopy. Simulated images with known targets will be used to evaluate and compare the main approaches in terms of quality enhancement and computing time. In addition, a procedure to determine the reference image will be proposed to minimise the global drift on the series. The best registration and restoration strategies will be applied to experimental images in order to point up the enhanced capability of this high quality image reconstruction methodology in this field.

Predicting muscle fatigue: a response surface approximation based on proper generalized decomposition technique

A novel technique is proposed to predict force reduction in skeletal muscle due to fatigue under the influence of electrical stimulus parameters and muscle physiological characteristics. Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were divided in four groups ([Formula: see text]) to obtain the active force evolution of in vitro Extensor Digitorum Longus muscles for an hour of repeated contractions under different electrical stimulation patterns. Left and right muscles were tested, and a total of 24 samples were used to construct a response surface based in the proper generalized decomposition. After the response surface development, one additional rabbit was used to check the predictive potential of the technique. This multidimensional surface takes into account not only the decay of the maximum repeated peak force, but also the shape evolution of each contraction, muscle weight, electrical input signal and stimulation protocol. This new approach of the fatigue simulation challenge allows to predict, inside the multispace surface generated, the muscle response considering other stimulation patterns, different tissue weight, etc.

Prevalence, genotyping, and correlates of anogenital HPV infection in a population-based sample of women in Puerto Rico

Background

Oncogenic HPV infection is associated to anogenital cancer. We estimate the prevalence and correlates of anogenital HPV infection among a population-based sample of women aged 16–64 years living in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico.

Methods

564 women completed face-to-face and computer assisted interviews and self-collected anal and cervical specimens. HPV DNA testing used MY09/MY11 consensus HPV L1 primers and beta-globin as an internal control for sample amplification. Positive specimens were typed by dot-blot hybridization.

Results

Weighted prevalence of cervical, anal, and cervical/anal co-infection was 29.4%, 38.6%, and 17.1%, respectively. The commonest oncogenic HPV types detected in the cervix and anus were: 68 (8% vs. 7%) and 16 (5.5% vs. 5.1%), correspondingly. Having ≥3 lifetime sexual partners (OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.5–3.5) and last year anal intercourse (OR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.1–2.5) increased the odds of anogenital HPV infection. Cervical infection was independently associated to anal infection (OR: 3.0; 95% CI: 2.0–4.6).

Conclusions

Similar to others, our results confirm the burden of anogenital HPV infection in women and its relationship with sexual behavior. As vaccination increases, future studies should monitor changing trends in HPV infection in this population, and the relationship between anal and cervical HPV-related disease.

General route for the decomposition of InAs quantum dots during the capping process

The effect of the capping process on the morphology of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) by using different GaAs-based capping layers (CLs), ranging from strain reduction layers to strain compensating layers, has been studied by transmission microscopic techniques. For this, we have measured simultaneously the height and diameter in buried and uncapped QDs covering populations of hundreds of QDs that are statistically reliable. First, the uncapped QD population evolves in all cases from a pyramidal shape into a more homogenous distribution of buried QDs with a spherical-dome shape, despite the different mechanisms implicated in the QD capping. Second, the shape of the buried QDs depends only on the final QD size, where the radius of curvature is function of the base diameter independently of the CL composition and growth conditions. An asymmetric evolution of the QDs' morphology takes place, in which the QD height and base diameter are modified in the amount required to adopt a similar stable shape characterized by a averaged aspect ratio of 0.21. Our results contradict the traditional model of QD material redistribution from the apex to the base and point to a different universal behavior of the overgrowth processes in self-organized InAs QDs.

[The patents game. Generic and biosimilar drugs]

The protection provided by patents on medicines has a limited duration. The expiry of patents expiration allows copies of the drugs to be released, competing with original. At first, they were identical to the original, known as generic drugs, but in recent years, due to the marketing of biological therapies and the expiry of many of their patents, biosimilar drugs have also emerged. These are not exact copies of the original, but, like generic drugs, biosimilar drugs have to demonstrate equivalence to the reference drugs in quality, safety and efficacy. Nevertheless, despite their importance and contribution to sustainability of health system, doctors are sometimes unaware of differences between them, and their impact in terms of clinical and economic effects. An attempt is made to review and clarify certain aspects often unknown by physicians, despite their involvement in their use.

Environmental fate of naproxen, carbamazepine and triclosan in wastewater, surface water and wastewater irrigated soil - Results of laboratory scale experiments

Lab-scale photolysis, biodegradation and transport experiments were carried out for naproxen, carbamazepine and triclosan in soil, wastewater and surface water from a region where untreated wastewater is used for agricultural irrigation. Results showed that both photolysis and biodegradation occurred for the three emerging pollutants in the tested matrices as follows: triclosan>naproxen>carbamazepine. The highest photolysis rate for the three pollutants was obtained in experiments using surface water, while biodegradation rates were higher in wastewater and soil than in surface water. Carbamazepine showed to be recalcitrant to biodegradation both in soil and water; although photolysis occurred at a higher level than biodegradation, this compound was poorly degraded by natural processes. Transport experiments showed that naproxen was the most mobile compound through the first 30cm of the soil profile; conversely, the mobility of carbamazepine and triclosan through the soil was delayed. Biodegradation of target pollutants occurred within soil columns during transport experiments. Triclosan was not detected either in leachates or the soil in columns, suggesting its complete biodegradation. Data of these experiments can be used to develop more reliable fate-on-the-field and environmental risk assessment studies.

Strain mapping accuracy improvement using super-resolution techniques

Super-resolution (SR) software-based techniques aim at generating a final image by combining several noisy frames with lower resolution from the same scene. A comparative study on high-resolution high-angle annular dark field images of InAs/GaAs QDs has been carried out in order to evaluate the performance of the SR technique. The obtained SR images present enhanced resolution and higher signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio and sharpness regarding the experimental images. In addition, SR is also applied in the field of strain analysis using digital image processing applications such as geometrical phase analysis and peak pairs analysis. The precision of the strain mappings can be improved when SR methodologies are applied to experimental images.

Postoperative surgical complications after lung transplantation

This is a review article on the main postoperative complications after lung transplantation: airways complications, vascular complications, pleural complications, surgical wound complications, and abdominal complications. Incidence data, severity, and major management regimens are reported. Postoperative complications after lung transplantation result in a significantly increased morbidity and mortality, with early diagnosis and therapy being extremely important.

Maternal administration of flutamide during late gestation affects the brain and reproductive organs development in the rat male offspring

We have previously demonstrated that male rats exposed to stress during the last week of gestation present age-specific impairments of brain development. Since the organization of the fetal developing brain is subject to androgen exposure and prenatal stress was reported to disrupt perinatal testosterone surges, the aim of this research was to explore whether abnormal androgen concentrations during late gestation affects the morphology of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus (HPC) and ventral tegmental area (VTA), three major areas that were shown to be affected by prenatal stress in our previous studies. We administered 10-mg/kg/day of the androgen receptor antagonist flutamide (4'nitro-3'-trifluoromethylsobutyranilide) or vehicle injections to pregnant rats from days 15-21 of gestation. The antiandrogenic effects of flutamide were confirmed by the analysis of androgen-dependent developmental markers: flutamide-exposed rats showed reduced anogenital distance, delay in the completion of testis descent, hypospadias, cryptorchidism and atrophied seminal vesicles. Brain morphological studies revealed that prenatal flutamide decreased the number of MAP2 (a microtubule-associated protein type 2, present almost exclusively in dendrites) immunoreactive neuronal processes in all evaluated brain areas, both in prepubertal and adult offspring, suggesting that prenatal androgen disruption induces long-term reductions of the dendritic arborization of several brain structures, affecting the normal connectivity between areas. Moreover, the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunopositive neurons in the VTA of prepubertal offspring was reduced in flutamide rats but reach normal values at adulthood. Our results demonstrate that the effects of prenatal flutamide on the offspring brain morphology resemble several prenatal stress effects suggesting that the mechanism of action of prenatal stress might be related to the impairment of the organizational role of androgens on brain development.

Pharmacogenomics in colorectal cancer: a genome-wide association study to predict toxicity after 5-fluorouracil or FOLFOX administration

The development of genotyping technologies has allowed for wider screening for inherited causes of variable outcomes following drug administration. We have performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 221 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients that had been treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), either alone or in combination with oxaliplatin (FOLFOX). A validation set of 791 patients was also studied. Seven SNPs (rs16857540, rs2465403, rs10876844, rs10784749, rs17626122, rs7325568 and rs4243761) showed evidence of association (pooled P-values 0.020, 9.426E-03, 0.010, 0.017, 0.042, 2.302E-04, 2.803E-03) with adverse drug reactions (ADRs). This is the first study to explore the genetic basis of inter-individual variation in toxicity responses to the administration of 5-FU or FOLFOX in CRC patients on a genome-wide scale.

Real-time simulation of biological soft tissues: a PGD approach

We introduce here a novel approach for the numerical simulation of nonlinear, hyperelastic soft tissues at kilohertz feedback rates necessary for haptic rendering. This approach is based upon the use of proper generalized decomposition techniques, a generalization of PODs. Proper generalized decomposition techniques can be considered as a means of a priori model order reduction and provides a physics-based meta-model without the need for prior computer experiments. The suggested strategy is thus composed of an offline phase, in which a general meta-model is computed, and an online evaluation phase in which the results are obtained at real time. Results are provided that show the potential of the proposed technique, together with some benchmark test that shows the accuracy of the method.

Quantitative analysis of pheromone-binding protein specificity

Many pheromones have very low water solubility, posing experimental difficulties for quantitative binding measurements. A new method is presented for determining thermodynamically valid dissociation constants for ligands binding to pheromone-binding proteins, using β-cyclodextrin as a solubilizer and transfer agent. The method is applied to LUSH, a Drosophila odorant-binding protein that binds the pheromone 11-cis vaccenyl acetate (cVA). Refolding of LUSH expressed in Escherichia coli was assessed by measuring N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine (NPN) binding and Förster resonance energy transfer between LUSH tryptophan 123 (W123) and NPN. Binding of cVA was measured from quenching of W123 fluorescence as a function of cVA concentration. The equilibrium constant for transfer of cVA between β-cyclodextrin and LUSH was determined from a linked equilibria model. This constant, multiplied by the β-cyclodextrin-cVA dissociation constant, gives the LUSH-cVA dissociation constant: ∼100 nM. It was also found that other ligands quench W123 fluorescence. The LUSH-ligand dissociation constants were determined to be ∼200 nM for the silk moth pheromone bombykol and ∼90 nM for methyl oleate. The results indicate that the ligand-binding cavity of LUSH can accommodate a variety ligands with strong binding interactions. Implications of this for the Laughlin, Ha, Jones and Smith model of pheromone reception are discussed.

Regulation of the tumor suppressor PTEN by SUMO

The crucial function of the PTEN tumor suppressor in multiple cellular processes suggests that its activity must be tightly controlled. Both, membrane association and a variety of post-translational modifications, such as acetylation, phosphorylation, and mono- and polyubiquitination, have been reported to regulate PTEN activity. Here, we demonstrated that PTEN is also post-translationally modified by the small ubiquitin-like proteins, small ubiquitin-related modifier 1 (SUMO1) and SUMO2. We identified lysine residue 266 and the major monoubiquitination site 289, both located within the C2 domain required for PTEN membrane association, as SUMO acceptors in PTEN. We demonstrated the existence of a crosstalk between PTEN SUMOylation and ubiquitination, with PTEN-SUMO1 showing a reduced capacity to form covalent interactions with monoubiquitin and accumulation of PTEN-SUMO2 conjugates after inhibition of the proteasome. Moreover, we found that virus infection induces PTEN SUMOylation and favors PTEN localization at the cell membrane. Finally, we demonstrated that SUMOylation contributes to the control of virus infection by PTEN.

Neuroma under the fifth metatarsal head. A retrospective study

This retrospective study was carried out over 83 surgical cases at the distal portion of the fifth metatarsal, compromising the treatment of tailor's bunion, fifth metatarsal overload and the concomitant presence of both pathologies in some cases. Neuromas were founded under the fifth metatarsal head in 18 of the cases studied (21.7%). The results look at whether if there is an association between different fifth metatarsal pathologies and the presence of neuromas and found a significant association between the appearance of neuromas in patients with the same metatarsal overload, especially if it is accompanied by a tailor's bunion pathology.

Real-time simulation of surgery by reduced-order modeling and X-FEM techniques

This paper describes a novel approach for the simulation of surgery by a combined technique of model order reduction and extended finite element method (X-FEM) methods. Whereas model order reduction techniques employ globally supported (Ritz) shape functions, a combination with X-FEM methods on a locally superimposed patch is developed for cutting simulation without remeshing. This enables to obtain models with very few degrees of freedom that run under real-time constrains even for highly non-linear tissue constitutive equations. To show the performance of the technique, we studied an application to refractive surgery in the cornea.

Impact on patient care time and tumor stage of a program for fast diagnostic and treatment of colorectal cancer

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effectiveness of a fast track diagnosis and treatment program for colorectal cancer (CRC) in reducing the diagnosis to treatment interval (DTI) and tumor stage. To analyze the association between DTI and tumor stage.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental study with a control group was conducted, and 156 incident cases of CRC referred through a preferential pathway between July 2005 and December 2008 in a tertiary hospital were included, after excluding those treated urgently, treated by endoscopic polypectomy only or having periodic colonoscopies. A control group of 156 patients was randomly selected from all the patients referred through habitual pathways, frequency matched by tumor location, age and year of entry. Data was analyzed with multivariate linear and logistic regression.

RESULTS

Mean DTI was 39.20 days (95% CI: 36.21-42.42) for fast track patients and 63.40 days (95% CI: 57.08-70.41) for controls (p < 0.001), and this difference persisted after multivariate analysis. The odds of having a DTI longer than 30 days was 4.79 (95% CI: 2.19-10.51) higher for controls. There were no significant differences in tumor stage according to the pathway followed. Independently of the track followed, a DTI longer than 30 days was associated with advanced tumor stages for colon cancer, while it was associated with low stages for rectal cancer.

CONCLUSIONS

The PDTR strategy is effective in reducing DTI and may reduce patients' and relatives' anxiety. However, it is far from reaching the DTI recommended. The achieved reduction of the delay has no impact on tumor stage.

Metabolitos nitrogenados en el hámster dorado alimentado a base de harina de lombriz (eisenia spp.)

Se evaluó en el plasma sanguíneo del hámster dorado (Mesocrisetus auratus L.) el contenido total de proteína (PT), albúmina (Alb), globulinas (Glb), urea (U), ácido úrico (AU), creatinina (Ct) y los niveles de transaminasas (glutámico oxal-acética (TGO) y glutámico-pirúvica (TGP)) a partir del consumo de dietas (proteína bruta; PB= 13,5-19,6%) con harina de lombriz roja (HL) (Eisenia spp.) y dos alimentos convencionales (Coneja-rina®; PB= 11,4% y Ratarina®; PB= 21,1%). La concentración de PT, Alb, Glb y Ct osciló entre 5-6; 2-3; 2-3 g/dL y 0,3-0,4 mg/dL, respectivamente, sin observarse diferencias significativas entre las dietas (p>0,05). En todo el experimento los niveles de U y AU fluctuaron entre 23-101 y 3-9 mg/dL, respectivamente, en función del nivel de PB, la inclusión de HL y el momento de muestreo. Los niveles de transaminasas fueron elevados y variables, acorde al valor proteico de las dietas (TGO: 101-699 y TGP: 54-890 UI/L). Se comprobó que los contenidos séricos de PT, Glb, Alb y Ct fueron independientes de la inclusión de HL y los niveles de PB de cada alimento; mientras que la concentración de U (R2= 0,509*), TGO (R2= 0,661**) y TGP (R2= 0,524*) se encontraron relacionados con los valores proteicos de las raciones, y el contenido de U (R2= 0,502*) y AU (R2= 0,531*) con la inclusión de HL. La adición de HL en proporciones de 24, 27 y 30% a dietas formuladas para M. auratus aumenta significativamente los valores normales de U, AU y transaminasas.

Respirometric assays of two different MBR (microfiltration and ultrafiltration) to obtain kinetic and stoichiometric parameters

A comparison of two different medium scale MBRs (ultrafiltration and microfiltration) using respirometric methods has been achieved. The ultrafiltration membrane plant (0.034 microm pore size) maintained recirculation sludge flow at seven times the influent flow, and membranes were backwashed every 5 min and chemically cleaned weekly. The microfiltration membrane plant (0.4 microm pore size) maintained recirculation sludge flow at four times the influent flow, membrane-relax was applied after the production phase and membranes were chemically cleaned in the event of high trans-membrane pressure. Both technologies showed a similar performance with regard to heterotrophic kinetic and stoichiometric parameters and organic matter effluent concentrations. The influent was characterized by means of its COD fractions and the average removal percentages for COD concentrations were around 97% for both plants in spite of influent COD fluctuation, temperature variations and sludge retention time (SRT) evolution. Both SRT evolution and temperature affect the heterotrophic yield (Y(H)) and the decay coefficient (bH) in the same range for both plants. Y(H) values of over 0.8 mg COD/mg COD were obtained during the unsteady periods, while under steady state conditions these values fell to less than 0.4 mg COD/mg COD. bH by contrast reached values of less than 0.05 d(-1).

Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction in a single-lung transplant recipient with natal lung hyperinflation: a case report

After single lung transplantation for emphysema native lung hyperinflation is a common complication that may cause respiratory failure. Herein we have reported satisfactory bronchoscopic lung volume reduction in a left single-lung transplant recipient with native lung hyperinflation, who suffered from Medical Research Council (MRC) class 3 dyspnea and chest pain. Three endobronchial valves (Zephyr; Emphasys Medical, Redwood, Calif, United States) were placed into the segmental bronchi of the right upper lobe, using videobronchoscopy under general anesthesia. Postoperative chest computed tomography revealed subsegmental atelectasis in that lobe. The clinical benefit was an improved MRC dyspnea class from 3 to 2, which was still present at 4 months after the procedure, although there were no remarkable changes in spirometric parameters.

Identification of III-N nanowire growth kinetics via a marker technique

By using a marker technique based on nanowire (NW) heterostructure, we have identified the Ga-limited and N-limited GaN NW growth regimes, which are shifted in comparison to those in two-dimensional GaN layers. The results show that the Ga atoms diffusing along NW sidewalls have a significant contribution to the NW vertical growth. By reducing the substrate temperature, Ga-rich conditions locally activate the lateral growth. In contrast to Ga atoms, the contribution of Al and N adatom diffusion to the NW vertical growth is negligible. Finally, the control of GaN/AlN heterostructures in NWs is demonstrated.

Phase mapping of aging process in InN nanostructures: oxygen incorporation and the role of the zinc blende phase

Uncapped InN nanostructures undergo a deleterious natural aging process at ambient conditions by oxygen incorporation. The phases involved in this process and their localization is mapped by transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-related techniques. The parent wurtzite InN (InN-w) phase disappears from the surface and gradually forms a highly textured cubic layer that completely wraps up a InN-w nucleus which still remains from the original single-crystalline quantum dots. The good reticular relationships between the different crystals generate low misfit strains and explain the apparent easiness for phase transformations at room temperature and pressure conditions, but also disable the classical methods to identify phases and grains from TEM images. The application of the geometrical phase algorithm in order to form numerical moiré mappings and RGB multilayered image reconstructions allows us to discern among the different phases and grains formed inside these nanostructures. Samples aged for shorter times reveal the presence of metastable InN:O zinc blende (zb) volumes, which act as the intermediate phase between the initial InN-w and the most stable cubic In(2)O(3) end phase. These cubic phases are highly twinned with a proportion of 50:50 between both orientations. We suggest that the existence of the intermediate InN:O-zb phase should be seriously considered to understand the reason for the widely scattered reported fundamental properties of thought to be InN-w, as its bandgap or superconductivity.

A clomazone immunoassay to study the environmental fate of the herbicide in rice (Oryza sativa) agriculture

The environmental impact of rice agriculture is poorly studied in developing countries, mainly due to limitations of the analytical capacity. Here, we report the development of a clomazone enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay as a fast and cost-effective tool to monitor the dissipation of this herbicide along the harvest. Antibodies were prepared using different strategies of hapten conjugation, and the best hapten/antibody pair was selected. It proved to be a reliable tool to measure the herbicide in the 2.0-20 ng/mL range in field samples, with excellent correlation with high-performance liquid chromatography results. The assay was used to study the dissipation of the herbicide in the floodwater of experimental rice paddies in Uruguay. Large differences in the residual amounts of herbicide were observed depending on the flooding practices. Because of its robustness and simplicity, the assay may be useful to delineate and monitor management practices that can contribute to minimizing the release of the herbicide in the environment.

Surgical risk factors associated with lung transplantation

BACKGROUND

Despite years of experience with lung transplantation, perioperative morbidity rates remain high. The objective of this study was to analyze our series of lung transplant recipients, seeking to identify possible intra- and postoperative risk factors associated with mortality.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We performed a descriptive, retrospective study of 224 consecutive patients undergoing lung transplantation over a period of 112 months; we excluded retransplant procedures. We gathered details of the surgical procedure and postoperative period in the recovery unit. Univariate analysis using the chi-square test identified variables associated with the incidence of mortality.

RESULTS

From 1999 to 2008, we performed 224 lung transplants, including 66% in men and 34% in women. Their overall mean age was 49.9 +/- 13.5 years. The conditions that led to transplantation were pulmonary fibrosis (38.4%); chronic obstructive pulmonary disease emphysema (29%); cystic fibrosis (10.7%); bronchiectasis (8.9%); pulmonary hypertension (3.1%); and other diseases (9.9%). A total of 124 (55.4%) patients underwent single and 100 (44.6%) received sequential bilateral lung transplantations. Surgical risk factors were identified in 51.3% of the cases, the most frequent being hemorrhage (25.3%), followed by severe pulmonary hypertension (14.7%) and cardiopulmonary bypass (12.1%). Greater perioperative mortality was detected among patients with surgical risk factors, namely, significantly related to cardiopulmonary bypass, pulmonary hypertension, and air leak. A higher frequency of surgical risk factors was observed among patients with bilateral lung transplantations and longer procedures, but they were not associated with greater perioperative mortality. Reoperation was necessary in 16 patients (7.2%), mainly owing to bleeding, it was not significantly related to mortality risk.

CONCLUSIONS

The incidence of surgical risk factors in lung transplantation was high, especially in bilateral lung transplantations and prolonged procedures. Postoperative bleeding requiring reoperation was not frequent and not associated with increased preoperative mortality in our series.
