Abstract
AIMS Given the high prevalence of oral health problems among prisoners, the goal of this systematic review is to provide a better knowledge of the scope of this problem. METHODS Electronic searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar were performed. Studies that investigated inmates aged 18 or older with oral health problems were eligible. Variables reported in four or less studies were described narratively. Conversely, for variables reported in more than four studies, a meta-analysis was performed using random effect model. Furthermore, meta-regression and sensitivity analysis is also performed to evaluate moderator effect on outcome. Doi and LFT index is applied to assess publication bias. RESULTS Out of 494 results, 12 studies were included. The pooled prevalence of caries among prisoners is 78.42% (59.48%-92.58%). On meta-regression, the prevalence of caries appears to be lower in studies with a higher male percentage; however, non-significant (p = .079) due to small sample size. Community periodontal index (CPI) scores revealed periodontal disease, with scores of 3 and 4. Moreover, a significant need for oral hygiene instruction, prosthesis, extraction, and tooth ache, periodontal disease, oral mucosal lesions, leucoplakia, attrition, abrasion, bruxism, and smoking behaviors were also reported. CONCLUSION Poor oral health status in the incarcerated population highlights the urgent need for comprehensive oral health intervention in prisons.

Abstract
The Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is characterized by pathognomonic histomorphological features and rarely exhibits significant deviations. We present a case of OKC of mandibular posterior region in a 25-year-old female patient. In addition to the classical histopathological characteristics of OKC, the connective tissue near the juxta-epithelial area displayed numerous small round basophilic calcifications resembling psammomatoid ossicles. These calcifications displayed a focal distribution pattern, with round calcifications evenly spaced from each other. Some of these round calcified bodies bore a resemblance to Liesegang ring calcifications. The presence of psammomatoid ossicles in this specific OKC challenges established knowledge, emphasizing the necessity for more comprehensive investigations into these cystic variants especially related to their biological behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is arguably the most ubiquitous and hazardous, even at very low levels, starting in early life. The objective of this study was to describe the state of research and future trends on ETS exposure and Children's Health (CH) topics with bibliometrics and altmetrics. METHODS An electronic search was performed in Scopus database on January 31, 2023. Consensus was arrived on 100 most-cited articles by two reviewers. These papers were then cross matched with citations harvested from Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) and Dimension counts were also collected. Analysis and network visualization of authors, countries, and keywords were generated using VOSviewer software. RESULTS Among a total of 1107 articles published on ETS and CH, the 100 top-cited articles appeared in 54 journals, with Pediatrics (n = 12) contributing a maximum number of articles. The time period between 2000 and 2009 accounted for 44% of all publications. With respect to the research design employed across these studies, cross-sectional design took precedence over others accounting for approximately 40%. Predominantly, articles focused on childhood asthma; however, current research trends have shifted towards emerging fields such as children's oral health and DNA methylation. Twitter, policy documents, and news outlets were the main platforms where outputs were discussed. The AAS was not associated with journal impact factor or access type. Weak correlations were observed between AAS and citation count in Scopus, WoS, and Google Scholar (r = 0.17 to 0.27) while a positive association existed between dimension count and the number of citations across all three databases (r = 0.84 to 0.98). CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the evolution, digital dissemination and research hotspots in the field of ETS and CH, predicting the possible future research directions. High-quality studies with more specific exposure classification are warranted to better understand the relationship between ETS and CH.

Abstract
Background One of the most common clinical manifestations of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is restricted tongue movements. However, the characterization of involvement is needed to better understand the impairment of its functioning. In the present study, force, alternate movements, snap, suction, and vibration functions of the tongue were investigated in OSMF patients. Methods A total of 53 OSMF and 40 healthy individuals were recruited in the present study. Clinical parameters were used for the diagnosis and grading of OSMF. Alternate movements, snap, suction, vibration of the tongue and tongue force were assessed using standard methodology. Results Out of 53 OSMF subjects, 22 (42%) were in early stages and 31 (58%) in late stages. There were statistically significant differences between the OSMF and healthy individuals for tongue functions such as protrusion, retraction, lateral movements, altered snap, suction, and tongue vibration (p < 0.00001). All of the aforementioned tongue functions were more affected in advanced stage OSMF than in early stage OSMF (p < 0.00001). Conclusion Force, alternate movements, snap, suction and vibration functions of tongue are significantly altered in OSMF patients. The performance of the tongue movements by the OSMF subjects worsened with the disease progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic disease with significantly increasing malignant transformation rate. To date the pathogenesis of OSMF has been considered to be associated with areca nut constituents and their action on fibroblasts. However, fibrosis is also associated with immunological factors such as chemokines. In-depth analysis of such factors is the need of the hour in OSMF to better understand the pathogenesis so that effective therapeutic strategies can be developed in the future. MATERIALS AND METHOD Clinically diagnosed cases of OSMF (n=21) and healthy individuals (n=10) were enrolled in the present study. Chemokines such as CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CCL5, CCL11, CCL17, CCL28, CXCL1, CXCL5, CXCL8, CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL11 were assessed using the chemokine bead array in conjunction with the flow cytometry, along with real-time PCR (RT-PCR). The transcription factors CREB, NF-κB and NFAT5 were also studied for their expressions. The analysis of pg/ml (picogram/milliliter) values was done by using LEGENDplex™ Data Analysis Software. RESULTS The results obtained demonstrated early phase transient increase in CXCL-11, CCL20, CXCL9, CCL3, CCL2, CXCL10 and CXCL8. However, the expression of CCL3, CXCL10 and CXCL8 was higher in the late stage as compared to the early stage. The relative gene expression of CREB, NF-κB, NFAT5 were upregulated in the late stage of OSMF when compared to normal. CONCLUSION Distinctive sets of chemokine expression during the early and late stages of OSMF suggest a unique pattern of disease progression playing an important role in the pathogenesis.

Abstract
Background Association with variety of etiological agents is one of the characteristic features of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We hypothesized the existence of tobacco consumption habit-based heterogeneity in the immunohistochemical expression of carcinogenesis relevant molecular markers in OSCC. Hence, the present study was conducted to investigate the carcinogenesis relevant three commonly expressed markers (Ki-67, CD105, and α-smooth muscle acting [SMA]) in various forms of tobacco consumption habits in OSCC patients. Materials and Methods A total of 217 patients of OSCC were included in the study, and based on the habit, they were broadly categorized into tobacco lime (TL), TL and areca nut (TLAN), and areca nut (AN). Further, categorization was done on the basis of absence or presence of additional habit of smoking. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed using Ki-67, CD105, and α-SMA markers on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. Results TLAN (62.21%) was the most common habit noted in OSCC patient followed by TL (20.73%) and AN (15.20%). The additional habit of smoking was observed in 31.11% and 25.92% of TL and TLAN habits of OSCC patients, respectively. All the three markers (Ki-67, CD105, and α-SMA) showed statistically significant differences in the habit group such as TL, TLAN, and AN (P < 0.001). Although the expression of all the three markers was increased in TL as compared with TLAN, differences were not statistically significant. When these markers were compared in with and without smoking category, only TLAN with smoking and TLAN without smoking showed statistically significant differences in the expression of all three markers. Conclusions Ki-67 CD105 and α-SMA immunohistochemical expression in OSCC corresponds with different forms of tobacco consumption habits. Habit-related unique carcinogenesis events are reflected at IHC level thus providing proof of concept for future studies.

Abstract
Background There is a scarcity of literature on the presence of additional unexpected pathologies at the surgical margins of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). It is quite possible that such pathologies might get overlooked because of primary focus on the malignancy at the surgical margins. With this view in mind, a retrospective observational study has been designed to re-visit the surgical margins of OSCC for the possible presence of unexpected pathologies. Methods Haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of 96 cases (four surgical margins in each case) of OSCC were carefully examined under a compound microscope by two oral pathologists for the presence of any additional pathology. Results Out of 96 specimens of OSCC, 76 (79.2%) cases showed the presence of accidental pathologies. The surgical margins of 20 (20.8%) cases showed no evidence of any pathology, whereas the margins of 23 (23.95%) cases were associated with more than one pathology. The most commonly observed accidental pathology was oral submucous fibrosis (40.625%), followed by leukoedema (16.675%), retention cysts (10.42%), and calcifications (7.3%). The mucous extravasation phenomenon (6.25%), minor salivary gland (MSG) inflammation (6.25%), and lichen planus (5.21%) were also observed in the surgical margins of OSCC. Conclusion A significant number of accidental pathologies exist at the surgical margins of OSCC. This effect could be because of over-emphasis on the tumour status at the surgical margins, which leads to over-looking of minor pathologies.

Abstract
The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has marked the beginning of a new pandemic named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The World Health Organization has announced it as a health emergency that is of international concern. The disease has been reported to cause respiratory illness, pneumonia and even hinder the immunity of an individual. Individuals with disturbed immune responses have been found to be quite susceptible to this viral infection. Oral cancer patients are also at high risk in this pandemic situation and might encounter severe detrimental outcomes. Angiotensin receptors, documented in studies as the path of entry of this virus, are highly expressed in the epithelial cells of oral mucosa, making the group of individuals with oral cancers even more vulnerable. Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer is another potential target for SARS-CoV-2. An exhaustion of angiotensin converting enzyme 2 cell receptors leads to protumoral effects, whereas a downregulation of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer leads to antitumoral effects. Thus, it causes a variation of the biological behavior of the tumor. This article focusses on the molecular mechanisms, effects and patho-physiology of COVID-19 in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. The different molecular changes in oral squamous cell carcinoma in the background of COVID-19 will modify various environmental factors for this pathology and have an effect on the carcinogenesis process. Understanding the behavior of the tumor will help plan advanced treatment strategies for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients in the background of COVID-19.

Abstract
Candida is a commensal yeast. It can be infective when the host’s defense mechanism is weakened, as in the case of squamous cell carcinoma patients. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical mycological manifestation of candidiasis in 150 cancer cases comprised of preoperative and post-operative (with or without radiotherapy) upper aerodigestive squamous cell carcinoma. A total of 150 patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the Upper Aero-Digestive Tract (UADT) were divided into preoperative (n = 48), post-operative without radiotherapy (n = 29) and post-operative with radiotherapy (n = 73). Samples were collected using cotton swabs and cultured. Candida species were identified according to color pigmentation on Candida Differential Agar (CDA) plate. The clinico-mycological association of patients was evaluated by the chi-square test, and 98 out of 150 patients showed the presence of various Candida species. The major species isolated was Candida albicans (53%), followed by Candida tropicalis (16%). There was a significant statistical difference between patients who showed mycological associations and patients who did not have any such association (p = 0.0008). The prevalence of oral candidiasis was found to be 65.33% among total cases of upper aero-digestive squamous cell carcinoma. Chronic erythematous cases of candidiasis were mainly seen in preoperative squamous cell carcinoma cases, whereas the acute erythematous type of candidiasis was mainly seen in post-operative cases who received radiotherapy. The clinicomycological assessment can help to correlate the signs and symptoms with the presence of candidiasis in upper aerodigestive squamous cell carcinoma patients. Meticulous testing and examination can help in the early detection of candidiasis. Future studies are needed to develop advance scientific preventive strategies for high-risk cases.

Abstract
Viral cytopathic effects (VCE) are a well-known phenomenon associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in the cells associated with the lungs. Because maxillary sinus epithelium expresses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, cells associated with it are more likely to become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and develop VCE. If VCE is seen in with background of a confirmatory COVID-19 diagnosis, then connecting both become quite convincing. However, the diagnostic problem is expected when a similar VCE is seen without any confirmatory diagnosis of CODIV-19. We reported a biopsy sample of maxillary sinusitis in a COVID-19 negative patient. Histopathological examination revealed a pathognomonic VCE in the localized proliferating pseudostratified ciliated epithelium. The only confirmatory aspect linking this VCE with the SARS-CoV-2 was the detection of virus particles at the tissue level. In the present paper, pitfalls and recommendations for future research on this topic are discussed.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity with pathognomonic histopathologic features of invading nests, islands, or chords of malignant epithelial cells. Although the histological features are quite uniform across a majority of the cases, they can drastically change in different variants of OSCC, such as clear cell, spindle cell/sarcomatoid, adenoid/acantholytic/pseudoglandular, basaloid, papillary and adenosquamous, etc.

Abstract
:
The heterogeneous and complex nature of cancer is extensively revealed at molecular,
genetic, and tissue microenvironment levels. Currently, co-occurrence of coronavirus disease 2019
(COVID-19) to lung cancer patients and severity of infections by severe acute respiratory syndrome
coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been understood at preclinical and clinical levels. However,
molecular and cellular insights are not discussed in those papers that support the increased
COVID-19 severity and comorbidities in several cancer types, including lung cancer patients.
Therefore, this perspective highlights the basis of high severity and comorbidities among lung cancer
patients infected by COVID-19 with an emphasis on translational aspects.

Abstract
Publicly available image datasets of pathologies have easy accessibility and thus, are increasingly being used in the field of machine learning and medical diagnosis. As oral cancer is the most common head and neck cancer with an increasing incidence rate, it is of paramount importance to know the status of publicly available datasets. We designed a systematic search (PubMed, Google Scholar, Google Dataset Search, and Google) to identify the publicly available oral cancer image datasets. After carefully screening 332 articles/datasets, only one met the selection criteria and was available publicly. However, it contained images of cancerous lesions of only lips and tongue. This first-of-its-kind analysis made realize a dire need for publicly available datasets in oral cancer. It will help researchers in the development of effective machine learning algorithms for oral cancer.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests the role of cellular components in achieving antitumor to protumor microenvironments. Among the various types of cells within the tumor niche, the state of CD8+ T cells apparently changes from cytotoxic T effector cells and memory T cells to exhausted CD8+ T cells. These changes in the phenotype of CD8+ T cells promote the protumor microenvironment. Recently, comprehensive experimental data delineated the role of thymocyte selection-associated high-mobility group-box protein (TOX), which regulates the transcriptional process and epigenetic remodeling, with implications in tumor and chronic viral infections. This perspective summarizes the molecular mechanisms that link CD8+ T cells, TOX, and transcriptional and epigenetic reprogramming as well as future directions for determining new avenues of cancer therapeutics.
