Abstract
The amphibian skin microbiome is important in maintaining host health, but is vulnerable to perturbation from changes in biotic and abiotic conditions. Anthropogenic habitat disturbance and emerging infectious diseases are both potential disrupters of the skin microbiome, in addition to being major drivers of amphibian decline globally. We investigated how host environment (hydrology, habitat disturbance), pathogen presence, and host biology (life stage) impact the skin microbiome of wild Dhofar toads (Duttaphrynus dhufarensis) in Oman. We detected ranavirus (but not Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) across all sampling sites, constituting the first report of this pathogen in Oman, with reduced prevalence in disturbed sites. We show that skin microbiome beta diversity is driven by host life stage, water source, and habitat disturbance, but not ranavirus infection. Finally, although trends in bacterial diversity and differential abundance were evident in disturbed versus undisturbed sites, bacterial co-occurrence patterns determined through network analyses revealed high site specificity. Our results therefore provide support for amphibian skin microbiome diversity and taxa abundance being associated with habitat disturbance, with bacterial co-occurrence (and likely broader aspects of microbial community ecology) being largely site specific.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic automated red cell exchange (RCE) is increasingly employed for sickle cell disease (SCD). There is a paucity of data on the incidence of RCE adverse events (AEs) and potential patient and procedural risk factors for AEs. METHODS A retrospective review of pediatric SCD patients receiving chronic RCE over 3 years was performed to determine the frequency of AEs and identify procedural and patient AE risk factors. AE incidence, AE rate, incidence rate ratios (IRRs), and relative risks (RRs) were calculated based on various procedural and patient characteristics by univariable (UV) and multivariable (MV) analyses. RESULTS In 38 patients receiving 760 procedures, there were 150 (19.7%) AEs, 36 (4.7%) were symptomatic AEs. AE rates were 20.2 [95% CI 17.2, 23.6] and 4.8 [95% CI 3.49, 6.70] per 100 person months for AEs and symptomatic AEs, respectively. AE incidences were: hypocalcemia (117; 15.4%), dizziness (22; 3.0%), hypotension (15; 2.0%), and nausea (14; 1.8%). Patients with baseline Hct ≥30% experienced more total AEs and symptomatic AEs. Patients with pre-procedure systolic BP <50th percentile, severe CNS vasculopathy, and non-SCA genotype (HbSC or Sβ+ thalassemia) exhibited more total AEs. IHD depletion was not associated with an increased incidence of AEs or symptomatic AEs. CONCLUSION SCD patients with Hct ≥30%, systolic BP <50th percentile, severe CNS vasculopathy, and possibly non-SCA genotype may be at higher risk for RCE-related AEs. The effect of IHD on AE risk is likely minimal. Individualized AE risk assessment should be performed in all SCD patients undergoing chronic automated RCE.

Abstract
Oestrus expression between progesterone (P4) withdrawal and fixed-time AI (FTAI) has been shown to improve pregnancies per AI (P/AI) by 27% in beef cattle. As a result, cattle that do not express oestrus after P4 withdrawal present a challenge to the efficiency of FTAI. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that administration of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at the time of AI in heifers that do not express oestrus can improve fertility. Two-year-old Angus heifers (n=1032) with a condition score of 2.75 to 3.5 at two locations in Argentina were used. On Day 0, heifers received an intravaginal device containing 0.5g of P4 (Cronipres, Biogenesis) and 2mg of oestradiol benzoate intramuscularly (Bioestrogen, Biogenesis). On Day 8, devices were removed and heifers received 150µg of d-cloprostenol intramuscularly (Enzaprost, Biogenesis), 0.5mg of oestradiol cipionate intramuscularly (Croni-Cip, Biogenesis), and an oestrus detection patch (Estrotect, Rockway Inc.). On Day 10, AI was performed in all heifers 50 to 54h after device removal. Heifers were categorised based on oestrus expression, and those that did not express oestrus were randomised to receive 100µg of gonadorelin acetate intramuscularly (Gonasyn, Syntex; n=158) concurrent with AI or remain as untreated controls (n=151). Pregnancy was determined using ultrasonography at Days 38 and 111 after AI. Differences in fertility were evaluated using generalised linear mixed models, and the results are shown in Table 1. Oestrus expression between device removal and FTAI was 70.1% (723/1032). Pregnancies per AI at Days 38 and 111 were different between groups (P<0.01). Heifers that expressed oestrus had greater P/AI than those that did not regardless of treatment (P<0.01). However, in heifers that did not express oestrus, treatment with GnRH at the time of AI resulted in greater P/AI than in control heifers (P=0.004). Similarly, P/AI at Day 111 were greater in heifers that expressed oestrus than in those that did not regardless of treatment (P<0.01). Heifers that did not express oestrus and were treated with GnRH had greater P/AI than those that did not express oestrus and remained as controls (P=0.02). Pregnancy loss between Days 38 and 111 was not different between groups; however, there was a tendency (P=0.06) for greater pregnancy loss in heifers that did not express oestrus and were treated with GnRH compared with heifers that expressed oestrus. In summary, treatment with GnRH at the time of AI is a suitable strategy to improve P/AI in heifers that fail to exhibit oestrus after an oestradiol-based synchronisation protocol. However, this strategy appears to increase pregnancy loss, and thus further research is needed to confirm this observation and the mechanisms underlying it.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of children with tic disorders (e.g. Tourette syndrome) experience multiple challenges and stresses, which can impact on family functioning, children's well-being and could indirectly affect tic severity. Parenting interventions have been recommended for tic disorder populations; however, little is known about parents' views. METHOD The views of parents of children with tic disorders were sought. Using Q-methodology, 23 parents provided their opinions regarding the acceptability, effectiveness, feasibility and utility of parenting interventions. RESULTS Four factors emerged, representing four groups of parents with similar opinions. Although all factors evidenced support for parenting interventions, subtle differences emerged between factors regarding the endorsed content, barriers and delivery of interventions. CONCLUSION Results indicate a perceived clinical need for parenting interventions and provide guidance to further develop and implement such interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the short-term course of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in a genetically and clinically well-defined cohort of patients with SMA. DESIGN A comprehensive multicenter, longitudinal, observational study. SETTING The Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinical Research Network for SMA, a consortium of clinical investigators at 3 clinical sites. PARTICIPANTS Sixty-five participants with SMA types 2 and 3, aged 20 months to 45 years, were prospectively evaluated. INTERVENTION We collected demographic and medical history information and determined the SMN 2 copy number. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Clinical outcomes included measures of motor function (Gross Motor Function Measure and expanded Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale), pulmonary function (forced vital capacity), and muscle strength (myometry). Participants were evaluated every 2 months for the initial 6 months and every 3 months for the subsequent 6 months. We evaluated change over 12 months for all clinical outcomes and examined potential correlates of change over time including age, sex, SMA type, ambulatory status, SMN2 copy number, medication use, and baseline function. RESULTS There were no significant changes over 12 months in motor function, pulmonary function, and muscle strength measures. There was evidence of motor function gain in ambulatory patients, especially in those children younger than 5 years. Scoliosis surgery during the observation period led to a subsequent decline in motor function. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm previous clinical reports suggesting that SMA types 2 and 3 represent chronic phenotypes that have relatively stable clinical courses. We did not detect any measurable clinical disease progression in SMA types 2 and 3 over 12 months, suggesting that clinical trials will have to be designed to measure improvement rather than stabilization of disease progression.

Abstract
Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a non-invasive, painless technique for the evaluation of neuromuscular disease, and here we evaluate its potential application in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Twenty-one SMA patients and 18 healthy children underwent EIM of biceps brachii and tibialis anterior using a commercially available impedance device. Hand-held dynamometry and ultrasound assessment of subcutaneous fat thickness were also performed. All EIM parameters differed significantly between both SMA patients and normal subjects and between type 2 and type 3 SMA patients. In addition, EIM had an accuracy level as high as 93% for correctly categorizing patients as type 2 or type 3. Multiple regression analyses confirmed a strong association between EIM and dynamometry. These results confirm that EIM can accurately categorize patients with SMA. Because EIM requires no patient effort and is rapid to apply, it may serve a useful role in future SMA clinical trials.

Abstract
The relationship between body composition and function in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is poorly understood. 53 subjects with SMA were stratified by type and Hammersmith functional motor scale, expanded score into three cohorts: low-functioning non-ambulatory (type 2 with Hammersmith score < 12, n=19), high-functioning non-ambulatory (type 2 with Hammersmith score > or = 12 or non-ambulatory type 3, n=17), and Ambulatory (n=17). Lean and fat mass was estimated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Anthropometric data was incorporated to measure fat-free (lean mass in kg/stature in m(2)) and fat (fat mass in kg/stature in m(2)) mass indices, the latter compared to published age and sex norms. Feeding dysfunction among type 2 subjects was assessed by questionnaire. Fat mass index was increased in the high-functioning non-ambulatory cohort (10.4+/-4.5) compared with both the ambulatory (7.2+/-2.1, P=0.013) and low-functioning non-ambulatory (7.6+/-3.1, P=0.040) cohorts. 12 of 17 subjects (71%) in the high-functioning non-ambulatory cohort had fat mass index > 85th percentile for age and gender (connoting "at risk of overweight") versus 9 of 19 subjects (47%) in the low-functioning non-ambulatory cohort and 8 of 17 ambulatory subjects (47%). Despite differences in clinical function, a similar proportion of low functioning (7/18, 39%) and high functioning (2/7, 29%) type 2 subjects reported swallowing or feeding dysfunction. Non-ambulatory patients with relatively high clinical function may be at particular risk of excess adiposity, perhaps reflecting access to excess calories despite relative immobility, emphasizing the importance of individualized nutritional management in SMA.

Abstract
With improvements in technology and surgical technique, pediatric cardiologists are challenging surgeons to close symptomatic ventricular septal defects (VSDs) in ever smaller patients. Although delaying surgery may facilitate operative repair, early intervention decreases the period of time these patients require therapy to prevent heart failure, maintains growth, and minimizes exposure to increased pulmonary pressures. To evaluate early intervention, we compare the outcomes of VSD closure in different-sized children. From December 2002 to July 2005, 225 patients underwent closure of a VSD. These patients were divided into four weight-based groups: <4 kg (group 1, n = 28), 4 to 6 kg (group 2, n = 93), 6 to 10 kg (group 3, n = 47), and >10 kg (group 4, n = 57). We reviewed operative and postoperative data, and comparisons were made between the groups. Median weights and ages at the time of surgery were 3.5 kg and 77 days (group 1), 4.9 kg and 128 days (group 2), 7.1 kg and 309 days (group 3), and 18.2 kg and 190 days (group 4). Operative data included cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), aortic cross-clamp, and procedure times. CPB (p = 0.064), cross-clamp (p = 0.665), and procedure (p = 0.187) times were not significantly affected by decreasing weight. Postoperative continuous data included duration of ventilation and length of intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stay. Ventilation (p = 0.667) and ICU (p = 0.976) times and length of hospital stay (p = 0.905) were also unaffected by decreasing weight. Postoperative catagoric data included complications and presence of a residual VSD. There was no significant difference in complications (p = 0.763) or residual VSD (p = 0.696) between groups. There was no mortality and no persistent heart block requiring placement of a permanent pacemaker. With improvements in technology and surgical technique, safe and effective VSD closure can be performed in increasingly smaller children. Earlier repair decreases the period of time these patients require aggressive medical therapy to prevent heart failure and maintain growth. It also decreases the period of time for which they are exposed to increased pulmonary pressures and are at risk for infectious respiratory complications. It does not appear to affect operative or postoperative outcomes.

Abstract
Extended: The hypothesis was proposed that woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in North America had declined due to wolf predation and over-hunting rather than from a shortage of winter lichens (Bergerud, 1974). In 1974, two study areas were selected for testing: for the lichen hypothesis, we selected the Slate Islands in Lake Superior (36 km2), a closed canopy forest without terrestrial lichens, wolves, bears, or moose; for the predation hypothesis, we selected the nearby Pukaskwa National Park (PNP) where terrestrial lichens, wolves, bears, and moose were present. Both areas were monitored from 1974 to 2003 (30 years). The living and dead caribou on the Slates were estimated by the ‘King census’ strip transect (mean length 108±9.3 km, extremes 22-190, total 3026 km) and the Lincoln Index (mean tagged 45±3.6, extremes 15-78). The mean annual population on the Slate Islands based on the strip transects was 262±22 animals (extremes 104-606), or 7.3/km2 (29 years) and from the Lincoln Index 303±64 (extremes 181-482), or 8.4/km2 (23 years). These are the highest densities in North America and have persisted at least since 1949 (56 years). Mountain maple (Acer spicatum) interacted with caribou density creating a record in its age structure which corroborates persistence at relatively high density from c. 1930. The mean percentage of calves was 14.8±0.34% (20 years) in the fall and 14.1±1.95% (19 years) in late winter. The Slate Islands herd was regulated by the density dependent abundance of summer green foods and fall physical condition rather than density independent arboreal lichen availability and snow depths. Two wolves (1 wolf/150 caribou) crossed to the islands in 1993-94 and reduced two calf cohorts (3 and 4.9 per cent calves) while female adult survival declined from a mean of 82% to 71% and the population declined ≈100 animals. In PNP, caribou/moose/wolf populations were estimated by aerial surveys (in some years assisted by telemetry). The caribou population estimates ranged from 31 in 1979 to 9 in 2003 (Y=1267 - 0.628X, r=-0.783, n=21, P<0.01) and extirpation is forecast in 2018. Animals lived within 3 km of Lake Superior (Bergerud, 1985) with an original density of 0.06/km2, similar to many other woodland herds coexisting with wolves (Bergerud, 1992), and 100 times less than the density found on the Slate Islands. The mean moose population was 0.25±0.016/km2 and the wolf population averaged 8.5±0.65/1000 km2. Late winter calf percentages in PNP averaged 16.2±1.89 (25 years); the population was gradually reduced by winter wolf predation (Bergerud, 1989; 1996). The refuge habitat available is apparently insufficient for persistence in an area where the continuous distribution of woodland caribou is fragmented due to moose exceeding 0.10/km2 and thereby supporting wolf densities ≥6.5/1000 km2. A second experimental study was to introduce Slate Island caribou to areas with and without wolves. A release to Bowman Island, where wolves and moose were present, failed due to predation. Bowman Island is adjacent to St. Ignace Island where caribou had persisted into the late 1940s. A second release in 1989 to the mainland in Lake Superior Provincial Park of 39 animals has persisted (<10 animals) because the animals utilize off-shore islands but numbers are also declining. A third release to Montréal Island in 1984 doubled in numbers (up to 20 animals) until Lake Superior froze in 1994 and wolves reached the island. A fourth release was to Michipicoten Island (188 km2) in 1982 where wolves were absent and few lichens were available. This herd increased at λ= 1.18 (8 to ±200, 160 seen 2001) in 19 years. This was the island envisioned for the crucial test of the lichen/predation hypotheses (Bergerud, 1974: p.769). These studies strongly support the idea that ecosystems without predators are limited bottom–up by food and those with wolves top-down by predation; however the proposed crucial test which has been initiated on Michipicoten Island remains to be completed and there is a limited window of opportunity for unequivocal results.

Abstract
Postmortem examinations of 49 red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) found dead on the Isle of Wight revealed the presence of a Hepatozoon species in 18 of them (37 per cent). The prevalence of infection was highest in subadult animals and no juveniles were infected. The prevalence was higher in the squirrels dying from natural causes (nine of 12) than in squirrels killed in road accidents (seven of 27). The weight of infection varied, and there were heavy infections in squirrels dying from toxoplasmosis and bacterial pneumonia. A PCR-based assay was used to identify the presence of Hepatozoon species DNA in the lungs, and immunoperoxidase staining was used to confirm the identity of schizonts observed in histological sections. The nucleotide base sequence of the PCR products indicated that the organism was a novel species closely related to, but distinct from, Hepatozoon erhardovae of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus).

Abstract
In many suburban parts of Australia the removal of snakes from private property by licenced snake catchers is employed to mitigate perceived risks to humans and their pets. The number of snakes translocated around greater Melbourne, Victoria, each year can be very high (at least many hundreds). However, the effects of translocation on the behaviour and welfare of individual snakes, and the impact on existing snake populations at release sites are unknown. We used radio-telemetry of ‘resident’ and translocated snakes to investigate the consequences of translocation on the spatial ecology of tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus) in a suburban parkland near Melbourne. Fourteen snakes (two female and four male residents, and four female and four male translocated snakes) implanted with radio-transmitters were tracked between spring 2002 and autumn 2003. Translocated snakes exhibited home ranges ~6 times larger than those of residents, although each group maintained core ranges of similar size. Translocated snakes travelled longer distances and were often located in residential areas adjacent to the park, whereas resident snakes were never located outside of the park.

Abstract
Translocation of snakes is a common practice for managing human–snake conflict in many parts of Australia. The impact of this management on individual snakes is not known. Differences between translocated and non-translocated snakes in terms of their activity patterns and habitat use are likely to indicate an impact on individual snakes from this procedure. We investigated these issues in a suburban parkland close to Melbourne for one of the most familiar of these snakes, the tiger snake (Notechis scutatus). This parkland is frequently used by licenced snake controllers to release snakes that have been removed from nearby private properties at the owner’s request. We used two techniques to assess activity patterns and habitat preferences of resident and translocated snakes: direct observations of tiger snakes that were resident in the park, and radiotelemetry to compare a subset of resident snakes with translocated conspecifics. The size of our transmitters dictated that we only use telemetry for large snakes (≥750 mm snout–vent length), even though the resident population consisted mainly of intermediate-sized females (560–760 mm snout–vent length). Non-telemetred resident snakes were readily observed during spring, but rarely observed in summer and early autumn. Translocated snakes travelled greater distances than resident telemetred snakes, although there was no difference in the frequency of movements. For both groups the degree of cloud cover and maximum daily temperature had a significant influence on daily activity, with snakes being more likely to be active on relatively cool, sunny days. Relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall did not exert a significant influence on activity. Snakes exhibited bimodal peaks in daily activity, avoiding the hottest part of the day. Both resident and translocated snakes showed a preference for grassy woodlands associated with hills, but avoided escarpment woodlands and open plains. Floodplain riparian woodland was avoided by resident snakes, but used in proportion to its availability by translocated snakes. Because translocated snakes released at the study site moved larger distances and showed different habitat preferences to resident snakes we conclude that this practice influences individual snakes. Until the implications of translocation for both snakes and humans are fully understood, we recommend caution in the use of this management practice.

Abstract
A study involving eight children with moderate persistent asthma was undertaken to determine whether standard swimming lessons improved symptoms and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) in asthmatic children. Five children ages 7-12 years old with moderate persistent asthma were randomized to a swimming lesson group (5- to 6-week session) and three to a control group. Both groups completed pre- and poststudy period PFTs and symptom questionnaires. Swimming lessons did not produce a significant change in asthma symptoms or PFTs. Review of previous literature found that swimming has been shown to have definite benefits in improving cardiorespiratory fitness in asthmatic children. Swimming has been shown to be less asthmogenic than other forms of exercise. Some studies have also shown improvement in asthma symptoms in children participating in exercise programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic acidaemia stimulates protein catabolism in skeletal muscle cells, leading to muscle wasting. As this occurs without decreasing cytosolic pH, the initial signal is unclear. A possible explanation is that extracellular pH acts on solute transporters at the cell surface, inhibiting nutrient influx. DESIGN Influx through glucose and Pi transporters and System A amino acid transporters into L6 skeletal muscle cells was assessed using 3H-2-deoxyglucose (2-DG), 33Pi and 14C-methylaminoisobutyrate (MeAIB), respectively. Protein degradation (PD) was assessed from 14C efflux from cells prelabelled with 14C-Phe. Branched-chain amino acids and Phe were assayed by selective fluorimetric assays. RESULTS While acid (pH 7.1) had little immediate effect on 2-DG or 33Pi influx, exposure to pH 7.1 rapidly inhibited MeAIB influx. To determine whether System A inhibition was sufficient to trigger PD, it was blocked at pH 7.5 by a saturating dose (10 mmol L(-1)) of nonmetabolisable substrate (MeAIB). Like acid, this increased PD and decreased total protein. It also mimicked the decreases in protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, glucose transport and glycolysis, and depletion of branched-chain amino acids and Phe, which are induced in L6 by acid. The onset of inhibition of PD by an extracellular Gln load was retarded at pH 7.1, and stimulation of PD by acid was negligible if PD had already been stimulated by Gln depletion. The stimulatory effect of MeAIB on PD was selectively blunted by an excess of Gln, whereas the inhibitory effect of Gln on PD was blocked by excess MeAIB. CONCLUSIONS The similarity of changes in response to MeAIB and acid implies that these share a common intracellular signalling pathway triggered by inhibition of System A. Even though System A is only a minor contributor to total Gln influx in L6 cells, it is suggested that blockade of System A with acid or MeAIB induces a catabolic state by denying Gln access to a key intracellular regulatory site.

Abstract
With the completion of the Drosophila genome sequence, an important next step is to extract its biological information by systematic functional analysis of genes. We have produced a high-resolution genetic map of cytological region 38 of Drosophila using 41 deficiency stocks that provide a total of 54 breakpoints within the region. Of a total of 45 independent P-element lines that mapped by in situ hybridization to the region, 14 targeted 7 complementation groups within the 38 region. Additional EMS, X-ray, and spontaneous mutations define a total of 17 complementation groups. Because these two pools partially overlap, the completed analysis revealed 21 distinct complementation groups defined by point mutations. Seven additional functions were defined by trans-heterozygous combinations of deficiencies, resulting in a total of 28 distinct functions. We further produced a developmental expression profile for the 760 kb from 38B to 38E. Of 135 transcription units predicted by GENSCAN, 22 have at least partial homology to mobile genetic elements such as transposons and retroviruses and 17 correspond to previously characterized genes. We analyzed the developmental expression pattern of the remaining genes using poly(A)(+) RNA from ovaries, early and late embryos, larvae, males, and females. We discuss the correlation between GENSCAN predictions and experimentally confirmed transcription units, the high number of male-specific transcripts, and the alignment of the genetic and physical maps in cytological region 38.

It sets out to promote student engagement and school connectedness as the way to improve emotional well-being and learning outcomes. The key elements of the whole-school intervention are the establishment and support of a school-based adolescent health team; the identification of risk and protective factors in each school's social and leaning environment from student surveys; and, through the use of these data, the identification and implementation of effective strategies to address these issues. The project evaluation used a cluster-randomized controlled trial design involving 26 schools with initial results demonstrating considerable success in reducing smoking rates among Year 8 children. This article describes and accounts for how system-level changes have been made in schools through a process of capacity building. This encourages teachers, parents, and students to view the core business of education differently.

A school social climate profile is derived from a questionnaire survey of students. An adolescent health team uses this information to set priorities for change within the school. Interventions may focus on the promotion of a positive social climate of the whole school or in the classroom. Curriculum-based health education is also used and based on materials that are relevant to the normal developmental experiences of teenagers. These are integrated into the mainstream curriculum and incorporate a strong component of teacher professional development. Lastly, the intervention promotes linkage between the school and broader community with a particular emphasis on the needs of young people at high risk of school drop-out. CONCLUSIONS Educational environments are complex systems undergoing continuous and simultaneous changes. The Gatehouse Project will provide unique information on the relationship between the social environment and the emotional wellbeing of young people. More importantly it outlines a sustainable process for building the capacity of schools to promote the social and emotional development of young people.

Genomic sequencing has made it clear that a large fraction of the genes specifying the core biological functions are shared by all eukaryotes. Knowledge of the biological role of such shared proteins in one organism can often be transferred to other organisms. The goal of the Gene Ontology Consortium is to produce a dynamic, controlled vocabulary that can be applied to all eukaryotes even as knowledge of gene and protein roles in cells is accumulating and changing. To this end, three independent ontologies accessible on the World-Wide Web (http://www.geneontology.org) are being constructed: biological process, molecular function and cellular component.

Abstract
The fly Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most intensively studied organisms in biology and serves as a model system for the investigation of many developmental and cellular processes common to higher eukaryotes, including humans. We have determined the nucleotide sequence of nearly all of the approximately 120-megabase euchromatic portion of the Drosophila genome using a whole-genome shotgun sequencing strategy supported by extensive clone-based sequence and a high-quality bacterial artificial chromosome physical map. Efforts are under way to close the remaining gaps; however, the sequence is of sufficient accuracy and contiguity to be declared substantially complete and to support an initial analysis of genome structure and preliminary gene annotation and interpretation. The genome encodes approximately 13,600 genes, somewhat fewer than the smaller Caenorhabditis elegans genome, but with comparable functional diversity.

Abstract
Eukaryotic microorganisms (protists) are a very important component of microbial communities inhabiting groundwater aquifers. This is not unexpected when one considers that many protists feed heterotrophically, by means of either phagotrophy (bacterivory) or osmotrophy. Protistan numbers are usually low (< 10(2) per g dw of aquifer material) in pristine, uncontaminated aquifers but may increase by several orders of magnitude in aquifers subject to organic pollution. Small flagellates (typically 2-3(5) microns in size in situ) are by far the dominant protists in aquifers, although amoebae and occasionally ciliates may also be present in much lower numbers. Although a wealth of new taxonomic information is waiting to be brought to light, interest in the identity of aquifer protists is not exclusively academic. If verified, the following hypotheses may prove to be important towards our understanding of the functioning of microbial communities in aquifers: (1) Differences in swimming behavior between species of flagellates lead to feeding heterogeneity and niche differentiation, implying that bacterivorous flagellates graze on different subsets of the bacterial community, and therefore play different roles in controlling bacterial densities. (2) Bacterivorous flagellates grazing on bacteria capable of degrading organic compounds have an indirect effect on the overall rates of biodegradation.

Abstract
The daily activity pattern of the perentie Varanus giganteus on Barrow Island, was bimodal in summer
with activity concentrated during the morning and late afternoon. Animais were active on most days
in summer. Mean activity temperatures were approximately 36�C, which is similar to those of other
varanid species. The heating rate for one animal was 0.09�C min-1. The activity areas of animals
ranged in size from 2.9-21.5 ha. The diet consisted mainly of turtle eggs or hatchlings and other
vertebrates. Mating and egg-laying appear to take place in the spring.

Abstract
Five patients with a diagnosis of rectal carcinoma were examined by magnetic resonance and computerized tomography (CT) to determine if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) added any information to that obtained by computerized tomography. In each case, the imaging studies agreed with the surgical description of the tumor. The studies agreed on the presence of perirectal fat invasion and tumor position. Both modalities were positive for involved lymph nodes in the patient with metastatic disease to pelvic nodes, but both studies underestimated the number of nodes involved. These five cases were examined using two magnetic resonance scanners. The older one operated at 0.3 tesla (T) while the newer scanner operated at 1 T. Spatial resolution was improved with the newer scanner. In addition, the difference in signal intensity between tumor tissue and normal tissue was greater on the 1 T scanner. Tissue differentiation was useful in one case in which CT suggested extension of tumor into the vagina. The extension was confirmed on the MRI scan.

Abstract
Masses involving the adrenal in the neonate are most commonly due to hemorrhage. The literature involving the neonatal adrenal reflects this propensity. Although there have been reports of newborns with neuroblastoma [1, 2] and other tumors [3], which are more common in older children, ultrasonographic descriptions of masses involving the adrenal secondary to such tumors are rare [1]. Within a 6-month span we have discovered a clinically unsuspected adrenal carcinoma and adrenal neuroblastoma.

Abstract
Isotope turnover rates of perenties, Varanus giganteus, were determined during two consecutive summers
on Barrow I., W.A. The turnover rates were significantly lower in the first summer than those in the
second, and there were considerable differences in turnover rates between individuals in both years.
Estimated rates of prey consumption were 7.3 and 36.4 g kg- day-l , respectively, during the two
summers, and perenties were more active during the second summer. The mean daily energy expenditure
for a 10-kg perentie was much higher in both years than that predicted by allometric equations for reptiles,
which illustrates the need for obtaining data from larger species of reptiles in determining allometric
relationships.

Abstract
A significant percentage of children who are fecally incontinent are so from improper operation or failure to recognize a surgically correctable problem. Over the past five years, we have managed ten children who had operations for anorectal problems and two with anterior anus. Seven were seen after poorly positioned pull-through procedures for imperforate anus and had anal repositioning, four successfully. Gracilis sling was successful in two of the other three. In two children overflow after a Duhamel operation for Hirschsprung's disease was corrected by division of a persistent anorectal septum. The third child with a disrupted Duhamel procedure was cured by anolevatorplasty. In two children an anterior ectopic anus was made continent by posterior anoplasty. Primary and secondary deviations from proper anatomy of the anorectal region will result in incontinence, which may be recognized by physical examination and defecograms. Proper operation usually produces acceptable continence.

Abstract
Twenty-three women with 27 instances of pelvic pathology were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Different pulse sequences were used, which varied the dependence of the images on T1 and T2. Sonography was performed on 22 of the 23 patients. Five patients had CT examinations, including the patient who did not have sonography. MRI was also done in four normal volunteers. The spatial resolution of the MRI scans with short TR and TE intervals approached that of CT. There was overlap of MRI signal characteristics between various pathologic entities and also within the same entity (e.g., cystadenomas and endometriomas).
