Abstract
Herein, biobased composite materials based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as matrices, sodium hexametaphosphate microparticles (E452i, food additive microparticles, 1 and 5 wt%) as antimicrobial filler and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC, 15 wt%) as plasticizer, were developed for potential food packaging applications. Two set of composite films were obtained by melt-extrusion and compression molding, i) based on PLA matrix and ii) based on Ecovio® matrix (PLA/PBAT blend). Thermal characterization by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that the incorporation of E452i particles improved thermal stability and crystallinity, while the mechanical test showed an increase in the Young's modulus. E452i particles also provide antimicrobial properties to the films against food-borne bacteria Listeria innocua and Staphylococcus aureus, with bacterial reduction percentages higher than 50 % in films with 5 wt% of particles. The films also preserved their disintegradability as demonstrated by an exhaustive characterization of the films under industrial composting conditions. Therefore, the results obtained in this work reveal the potential of these biocomposites as appropriated materials for antibacterial and compostable food packaging films.

Abstract
The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment as well as their presence in foods and humans highlight the urgent need for studies on the effects of these particles on humans. Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most widely used bioplastic in the food industry and medical field. Despite its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) status, recent animal model studies have shown that PLA MPs can alter the intestinal microbiota; however, to date, no studies have been reported on the possible gut and health consequences of its intake by humans. This work simulates the ingestion of a realistic daily amount of PLA MPs and their pass through the gastrointestinal tract by combining the INFOGEST method and the gastrointestinal simgi® model to evaluate possible effects on the human colonic microbiota composition (16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis) and metabolic functionality (lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production). Although PLA MPs did not clearly alter the microbial community homeostasis, increased Bifidobacterium levels tended to increase in presence of millimetric PLA particles. Furthermore, shifts detected at the functional level suggest an alteration of microbial metabolism, and a possible biotransformation of PLA by the human microbial colonic community. Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) characterization revealed morphological changes on the PLA MPs after the gastric phase of the digestion, and the adhesion of organic matter as well as a microbial biofilm, with surface biodegradation, after the intestinal and colonic phases. With this evidence and the emerging use of bioplastics, understanding their impact on humans and potential biodegradation through gastrointestinal digestion and the human microbiota merits critical investigation.

Abstract
The significant impact of COVID-19 worldwide has made it necessary to develop tools to identify patients at high risk of severe disease and death. This work aims to validate the RIM Score-COVID in the SEMI-COVID-19 Registry. The RIM Score-COVID is a simple nomogram with high predictive capacity for in-hospital death due to COVID-19 designed using clinical and analytical parameters of patients diagnosed in the first wave of the pandemic. The nomogram uses five variables measured on arrival to the emergency department (ED): age, sex, oxygen saturation, C-reactive protein level, and neutrophil-to-platelet ratio. Validation was performed in the Spanish SEMI-COVID-19 Registry, which included consecutive patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 in Spain. The cohort was divided into three time periods: T1 from February 1 to June 10, 2020 (first wave), T2 from June 11 to December 31, 2020 (second wave, pre-vaccination period), and T3 from January 1 to December 5, 2021 (vaccination period). The model's accuracy in predicting in-hospital COVID-19 mortality was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC). Clinical and laboratory data from 22,566 patients were analyzed: 15,976 (70.7%) from T1, 4,233 (18.7%) from T2, and 2,357 from T3 (10.4%). AUROC of the RIM Score-COVID in the entire SEMI-COVID-19 Registry was 0.823 (95%CI 0.819-0.827) and was 0.834 (95%CI 0.830-0.839) in T1, 0.792 (95%CI 0.781-0.803) in T2, and 0.799 (95%CI 0.785-0.813) in T3. The RIM Score-COVID is a simple, easy-to-use method for predicting in-hospital COVID-19 mortality that uses parameters measured in most EDs. This tool showed good predictive ability in successive disease waves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The inflammatory cascade is the main cause of death in COVID-19 patients. Corticosteroids (CS) and tocilizumab (TCZ) are available to treat this escalation but which patients to administer it remains undefined. OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of immunosuppressive/anti-inflammatory therapy in COVID-19, based on the degree of inflammation. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study with data on patients collected and followed up from March 1st, 2020, to May 1st, 2021, from the nationwide Spanish SEMI-COVID-19 Registry. Patients under treatment with CS vs. those under CS plus TCZ were compared. Effectiveness was explored in 3 risk categories (low, intermediate, high) based on lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin, and D-dimer values. PATIENTS A total of 21,962 patients were included in the Registry by May 2021. Of these, 5940 met the inclusion criteria for the present study (5332 were treated with CS and 608 with CS plus TCZ). MAIN MEASURES The primary outcome of the study was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes were the composite variable of in-hospital mortality, requirement for high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV), invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), or intensive care unit (ICU) admission. KEY RESULTS A total of 5940 met the inclusion criteria for the present study (5332 were treated with CS and 608 with CS plus TCZ). No significant differences were observed in either the low/intermediate-risk category (1.5% vs. 7.4%, p=0.175) or the high-risk category (23.1% vs. 20%, p=0.223) after propensity score matching. A statistically significant lower mortality was observed in the very high-risk category (31.9% vs. 23.9%, p=0.049). CONCLUSIONS The prescription of CS alone or in combination with TCZ should be based on the degrees of inflammation and reserve the CS plus TCZ combination for patients at high and especially very high risk.

Abstract
We here present a simple model of a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The system allows recording magnetization curves at room temperature with a resolution of the order of 0.01 emu and is appropriated for macroscopic samples. The setup can be mounted with different configurations depending on the requirements of the sample to be measured (mass, saturation magnetization, saturation field, etc.). We also include here examples of curves obtained with our setup and comparison curves measured with a standard commercial VSM that confirms the reliability of our device.

Abstract
High aspect-ratio Fe nanostrips are known to reversibly switch from a single-domain magnetic state to a multidomain diamond pattern as a function of temperature (T) and width. This magnetic bistability can be understood by the temperature-dependent balance between magnetocrystalline, shape and magnetoelastic anisotropies and has potential applications in magnetic logic devices. However, as Fe nanostructures easily oxidize, protecting the surface with capping layers may be required, which could largely affect the anisotropy balance. Here, we employ x-ray magnetic circular dichroism-photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) to study these thin Fe nanostrips before and after exposure to air.

Abstract
Effects of ultrasonic irradiation on magnesium hydride (MgH(2)) suspended in decane were investigated with the purpose of improving its hydrogen desorption process. Firstly, we have found that the presence of MgH(2) improves the sonolysis of decane enhancing the amount of hydrogen evolved during the sonication process. The sonicated-MgH(2) maintains its microstructural properties practically unaltered but a drastic reduction of the particle size of MgH(2) (down to approximately 20mum) as well as a high pressure MgH(2) phase are observed. However, no substantial modifications of H-kinetic properties of hydride occur as is determined by thermal desorption measurements. This could be attributed to decomposition of decane during sonication which leads to the formation of carbon compounds that hinder the thermal decomposition of MgH(2).

Abstract
In this Letter, we experimentally show that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Mn-Zn-O system recently observed is associated with the coexistence of Mn(3+) and Mn(4+) via a double-exchange mechanism. The presence of the ZnO around MnO(2) modifies the kinetics of MnO(2)-->Mn(2)O(3) reduction and favors the coexistence of both Mn oxidation states. The ferromagnetic phase is associated with the interface formed at the Zn diffusion front into Mn oxide, corroborated by preparing thin film multilayers that exhibit saturation magnetization 2 orders of magnitude higher than bulk samples.

Abstract
The magnetic properties of the system MnZnO prepared by conventional ceramic procedures using ZnO and MnO(2) starting powders are studied and related to the nanostructure. Thermal treatment at 500 °C produces a ferromagnetic phase, although this temperature is not high enough to promote proper sintering; thus the thermally treated compact shows brittle characteristics of unreacted and poorly densified ceramic samples. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray analysis reveal the appearance of a new phase, most probably related to the diffusion of Zn into MnO(2) oxide nanocrystals. The magnetic properties deviate considerably from what would be expected of an unreacted mixture of ZnO (diamagnetic) and MnO(2) particles (paramagnetic above 100 K and anti-ferromagnetic below that temperature), exhibiting a ferromagnetic like behaviour from 5 to 300 K and beyond mixed with a paramagnetic component. The ferromagnetic phase seems to be originated by diffusion at the nanoscale of Zn into MnO(2) grains. The Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic phase, once the paramagnetic component has been subtracted from the hysteresis loops, is measured to be 450 K. EPR resonance experiments from 100 to 600 K confirm a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic like transition above room temperature for these materials.

Abstract
We report the first example of a transition to long-range magnetic order in a purely dipolarly interacting molecular magnet. For the magnetic cluster compound Mn6O4Br4(Et2dbm)6, the anisotropy experienced by the total spin S = 12 of each cluster is so small that spin-lattice relaxation remains fast down to the lowest temperatures, thus enabling dipolar order to occur within experimental times at T(c) = 0.16 K. In high magnetic fields, the relaxation rate becomes drastically reduced and the interplay between nuclear- and electron-spin lattice relaxation is revealed.

Abstract
We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of interacting dipoles that relax through quantum tunneling. We aim to mimic tunneling experiments on crystals of magnetic clusters, such as Fe(8), at very low temperatures. Accordingly, we allow spin flips only if the corresponding energy change is less than some 2 delta h(hf). Time evolutions of the dipolar field distribution P(t)(H) are studied. As in experiments, a "hole" develops in P(t)(H). The half-width W of incipient holes of weakly polarized systems are, under certain conditions, simply related to delta h(hf). For k(B)T less than approximately 0.5 delta h(hf) and delta h(hf) smaller than approximately 1/10 of the half-width of the dipolar field distributions of disordered systems, W approximately equal to 0.75 delta h(hf).

Abstract
Squamous metaplasia in the skin has been reported in the eccrine ducts as eccrine squamous syringometaplasia (ESS). To our knowledge, squamous metaplasia of sebaceous gland (SMSG) has not been described in human skin. Twenty-two biopsy specimens from patients with pressure lesions after cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation were evaluated for the presence of SMSG. Squamous metaplasia of sebaceous gland was identified in five of the eight scalp biopsies and none of the buttock biopsies. The squamous metaplasia began in the germinative outer layer and advanced in a centripetal way. We believe that SMSG is an unspecific change of the sebaceous cells secondary to a chronic injury. Ischemia appears to play a mayor role, but other factors such as chronic trauma or toxicosis can not be ruled out.

Abstract
We propose a simple algorithm for generating normally distributed pseudorandom numbers. The algorithm simulates N molecules that exchange energy among themselves following a simple stochastic rule. We prove that the system is ergodic, and that a Maxwell-like distribution that may be used as a source of normally distributed random deviates follows in the N-->infinity limit. The algorithm passes various performance tests, including Monte Carlo simulation of a finite two-dimensional Ising model using Wolff's algorithm. It only requires four simple lines of computer code, and is approximately ten times faster than the Box-Muller algorithm.

Abstract
Oral hairy leukoplakia (HL) was studied in 32 patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Features most often found were parakeratosis of variable thickness, acanthosis, little or absent submucosal chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate, association with candidiasis in 71.8%, and intranuclear herpetic type inclusions in keratinocytes, associated with ballooned or ground-glass cytoplasm. The last feature was found in all biopsies and was most striking at the top of the stratum spinosum, just beneath the parakeratotic surface. We consider that intranuclear inclusions are the histologic hallmark of HL, which, together with other features described, make it possible to diagnose HL specifically by light microscopic examination. Ultrastructural studies were carried out in 20 cases. Viral particles of the human herpesvirus group were detected in 17 cases. Particles of papillomavirus (HPV) were not found in any of the specimens. Immunohistochemical studies were made in 26 cases using a rabbit antiserum to papillomavirus. Nuclear positivity was observed in 25 cases. Despite such apparently contradictory results, we think that a cross reaction may exist between the antiserum used against HPV and some antigens of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

Abstract
IgE synthesis is controlled not only by antigen-specific mechanism but also by other factors which selectively affect the IgE isotype. Several groups demonstrated that factors released by lymphocytes were involved in this regulation. Our previous investigations were also directed in this field. Immunotherapy improves clinical symptoms in allergic respiratory diseases and produces cellular and humoral changes that affect IgE production. So we decided to investigate if immunotherapy had any influence in the production of soluble factors. Bidirectional mixed cultures were performed with lymphocytes from healthy controls and allergic patients with different time periods of IT, and the supernatants obtained from chromatography were tested to determine their effect on IgE synthesis of normal lymphocytes. IT time periods exerted influence on the production of enhancing factors. Suppressor factors derived from allergic patients had no effect on IgE synthesis of normal lymphocytes.

Abstract
Different selective agar media were compared for the recovery and isolation of five species of Listeria from raw milk and cheese. The selective media examined were Beerens medium, MacBride medium and that described by Dominguez et al. (1984) with 6 mg/l acriflavine, listeria selective agar medium (LSAM), and LSAM with 12 mg/l acriflavine (LSAM X 2A); a non-selective yeast glucose Lemco agar was included for comparison. When the difference between listeria and the natural microflora of raw milk and cheese was 10(2) cfu/ml, listeria could be isolated by direct plating on all media tested. When it was lower than 10(3)-10(4) cfu/ml, listeria were isolated by direct plating only on LSAM and LSAM X 2A. When the difference was greater than 10(4) cfu/ml, a previous enrichment was necessary to isolate them. LSAM and LSAM X 2A media performed better than the other media tested for isolating listeria by direct plating and improved their isolation from dairy products. This superior performance was evaluated by the ability of these media to support colony formation of different species of Listeria tested, the easy recognition of these colonies from those formed by other microorganisms and by their capacity to inhibit the natural microflora of these foods.
