Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the associations between cord serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG)levels and perinatal factors and determine the reference levels of cord blood TC and TG in Japanese neonates. This was a prospective birth cohort study using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, which included data on births from 2011 to 2014 in Japan. TC and TG levels were determined in cord blood samples. A total of 70,535 pairs of neonates (male: 36,001, female: 34,524) and mothers were included. The mean cord blood TC and TG levels were 72.2 mg/dL and 24.4 mg/dL, respectively. Multiple regression analyses revealed that gestational age and birth weight were significantly associated with cord blood TC (coefficient -2.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] -2.40 - -2.22 and coefficient 0.002, 95% CI 0.002-0.003, respectively) and TG (coefficient 3.09, 95% CI 3.01-3.17 and coefficient - 0.009, 95% CI - 0.009-0.008, respectively) levels. Mean cord blood TG and TC levels decreased over the preterm period; however, these parameters increased during the term. Furthermore, the mean cord blood TC and TG levels decreased over the entire range of birth weight categories. Conclusion: Mean cord blood TG and TC levels decreased over the preterm period; however, these parameters increased during the term. Furthermore, the mean cord blood TC and TG levels decreased over the entire range of birth weight categories in Japanese newborns. Maternal complications such as maternal parity, HDP, PROM, maternal obesity and income level were associated with cord TC and TG levels. What is Known: • No studies have ascertained the reference levels of cord blood lipid levels in Japan. What is New: • Mean cord blood TG and TC levels decreased over the preterm period; however, these parameters increased during the term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although maternal triglyceride (TG) is important for fetal growth, there are few large cohort studies investigating the relationships between maternal TG during pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between maternal TG during the second and third trimesters and neonatal outcomes including preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA). METHODS This was a prospective birth cohort study using data of the Japan Environment and Children's Study included data of births from 2011-2014 in Japan including 79,519 pairs. Participants were divided into tertiles according to maternal TG in the second or third trimesters. Multiple logistic regression modeling was used to examine the risks of LBW, SGA, LGA and PTB in association with maternal TG levels in the second or third trimesters RESULTS: In the second trimester, compared with reference TG group (T2), women in higher TG group (T3) and lower TG group (T1) were also at increased risk of LGA (aOR 1.20, 95% CI 1.11-1.29) and SGA (aOR 1.25, 95% CI 1.10-1.41), respectively. In the third trimester, women in T3 and T1 were at increased risk of LGA (aOR 1.27, 95% CI 1.17-1.38) and SGA (aOR 1.17, 95% CI 1.02-1.34), respectively. CONCLUSION In this study, higher maternal TG levels in the second or third trimesters were associated with risks of LGA, however, lower maternal TG levels in the second or third trimesters were conversely associated with risks of SGA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Zinc and copper are trace elements, but their reference values during the neonatal and infant periods are not clear. We aimed to determine the trend of serum zinc levels in infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and compare serum zinc and serum copper levels at admission between small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and non-SGA infants. METHODS From 406 patients admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit from January 2009 to September 2012, 339 patients were included in this retrospective study. Blood samples were collected on admission, and serum zinc and serum copper levels were measured. Serum zinc was tested every month until discharge. RESULTS Serum zinc levels of infants born at <30 wk of gestation decreased by 46% in the first month of life. All infants born at ≤34 wk of age became zinc deficient at 2 mo of age. The relationship between gestational age and serum zinc level at admission had a negative correlation (Spearman's rank correlation cofficients) = -0.66; P < 0.001). There was a negative correlation between serum zinc and serum copper at admission (rs = -0.49; P < 0.001). Serum copper levels of SGA infants at admission were significantly higher than those of non-SGA infants (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS All of the infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at ≤34 wk of gestation were zinc deficient by 2 mo of age, suggesting the need for enteral zinc administration. Serum copper was higher in SGA infants than in non-SGA infants on admission, but further studies are needed to determine whether excess copper affects development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast milk, nature's optimum source of nutrition for infants, can contain undesirable microorganisms that cause severe morbidity. After an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli among neonates receiving breast milk donated by another mother in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), we were motivated to develop a high-grade breast milk pasteurizer (BMP) designed to thaw and pasteurize breast milk at 63°C for 30 min in a sealed bag without having to open the bag or immerse it in water. METHODS Pre-existing bacteria and spiked cytomegalovirus (CMV) were measured pre- and post-pasteurization in frozen breast milk donated by mothers of children admitted to the NICU. RESULTS Among 48 breast milk samples (mean ± standard deviation [SD]), pre-existing bacterial counts of 5.1±1.1 × 104 colony forming units (cfu)/mL decreased to less than 10 cfu/mL (below detection level) in 45 samples after pasteurization for 30 min. In three samples, 10-110 cfu/mL persisted. As no CMV was detected in any of the 48 samples, CMV at ≥5 × 104 pfu/mL was spiked into 11 breast milk samples. After just 10 min of pasteurization, infectious CMV was not detected (threshold <50 pfu/mL) in any sample. CONCLUSION A new BMP was shown to pasteurize milk effectively with more than a 3-log reduction of microorganisms. Compared to conventional pasteurizers, this device reduces the effort involved in pasteurizing breast milk, avoids various contamination risks, and may reduce the risk of infectious disease transmission via breast milk.

Abstract
The KANNO blood group system (International Society of Blood Transfusion [ISBT] 037) includes one high-prevalence antigen, KANNO1, across ethnic groups. Sporadic KANNO1- cases among East and South Asians are theoretically estimated by the DNA database library. Anti-KANNO1 has been found most often among Japanese women with current or prior pregnancy. Thus far, there are no reported cases of hemolytic transfusion reaction or hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn due to anti-KANNO1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common morbidity complicating preterm birth and affects long-term respiratory outcomes. The objectives of this study were to establish whether serum periostin at birth, day of life (DOL) 28, and corrected 36 weeks' gestational age could be potential biomarkers for BPD. METHODS A total of 98 preterm Japanese infants born at <32 weeks and comparing 41 healthy controls born at term, were divided into BPD (n = 44) and non-BPD (n = 54) cohorts. Serum periostin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Among 98 preterm infants, the median serum periostin levels at birth were higher with BPD (338.0 ng/mL) than without (275.0 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that serum periostin levels at birth were significantly associated with BPD (P = 0.013). Serum periostin levels at birth with moderate/severe BPD (345.0 ng/mL) were significantly higher than those with non-BPD/mild BPD (283.0 ng/mL, P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Serum periostin levels were significantly correlated with birth weight and gestational age, and serum periostin levels at birth in BPD infants were significantly higher than that in non-BPD infants. IMPACT This study found higher serum periostin levels at birth in preterm infants subsequently diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. It also emerged that serum periostin levels at birth significantly correlated with gestational age and birth weight. The mechanism by which serum periostin is upregulated in BPD infants needs further investigation.

Abstract
Neuroeconomics studies how decision-making is guided by the value of rewards and punishments. But to date, little is known about how noxious experiences impact decisions. A challenge is the lack of an aversive stimulus that is dynamically adjustable in intensity and location, readily usable over many trials in a single experimental session, and compatible with multiple ways to measure neuronal activity. We show that skin laser stimulation used in human studies of aversion can be used for this purpose in several key animal models. We then use laser stimulation to study how neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), an area whose many roles include guiding decisions among different rewards, encode the value of rewards and punishments. We show that some OFC neurons integrated the positive value of rewards with the negative value of aversive laser stimulation, suggesting that the OFC can play a role in more complex choices than previously appreciated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patients with cerebral aneurysms often undergo MR imaging after microsurgical clipping. Ultra-high-field MR imaging at 7T may provide high diagnostic capability in such clinical situations. However, titanium alloy clips have safety issues such as adverse interactions with static magnetic fields and radiofrequency-induced heating during 7T MR imaging. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess temperature increases on various types of titanium alloy aneurysm clips during 7T MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five types of titanium alloy aneurysm clips were tested, including combinations of short, long, straight, angled, and fenestrated types. Each clip was set in a phantom filled with gelled saline mixed with polyacrylic acid and underwent 7T MR imaging with 3D T1WI with a spoiled gradient recalled acquisition in the steady-state technique. Temperature was chronologically measured at the tips of the clip blade and head, angled part of the clip, and 5 mm from the tip of the clip head using MR imaging-compatible fiber-optic thermometers. RESULTS Temperature increases at all locations for right-angled and short straight clips were <1°C. Temperature increases at the angled part for the 45° angled clip and the tip of the clip head for the straight fenestrated clip were >1°C. Temperature increases at all locations for the long straight clip were >2°C. CONCLUSIONS Temperature increases on the right-angled and short straight clips remained below the regulatory limit during 7T MR imaging, but temperature increases on the 45° angled, straight fenestrated, and long straight clips exceeded this limit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Cold stress in rice (Oryza sativa) plants at the reproductive stage prevents normal anther development and causes pollen sterility. Tapetum hypertrophy in anthers has been associated with pollen sterility in response to cold at the booting stage. Here, we re-examined whether the relationships between anther abnormality and pollen sterility caused by cold stress at the booting stage in rice can be explained by a monovalent factor such as tapetum hypertrophy. METHODS After exposing plants to a 4-d cold treatment at the booting stage, we collected and processed anthers for transverse sectioning immediately and at the flowering stage. We anatomically evaluated the effect of cold treatment on anther internal morphologies, pollen fertilities and pollen numbers in the 13 cultivars with various cold sensitivities. KEY RESULTS We observed four types of morphological anther abnormalities at each stage. Pollen sterility was positively correlated with the frequency of undeveloped locules, but not with tapetum hypertrophy as commonly believed. In cold-sensitive cultivars grown at low temperatures, pollen sterility was more frequent than anther morphological abnormalities, and some lines showed remarkably high pollen sterility without any anther morphological alterations. Most morphological anomalies occurred only in specific areas within large and small locules. Anther length tended to shorten in response to cold treatment and was positively correlated with pollen number. One cultivar showed a considerably reduced pollen number, but fertile pollen grains under cold stress. We propose three possible relationships to explain anther structure and pollen sterility and reduction due to cold stress. CONCLUSIONS The pollen sterility caused by cold stress at the booting stage was correlated with the frequency of entire locule-related abnormalities, which might represent a phenotypic consequence, but not a direct cause of pollen abortion. Multivalent factors might underlie the complicated relationships between anther abnormality and pollen sterility in rice.

Abstract
Inside the magnetosheath, the IBEX-Hi energetic neutral atom (ENA) imager measures a distinct background count rate that is more than 10 times the typical heliospheric ENA emissions observed when IBEX is outside the magnetosheath. The source of this enhancement is magnetosheath ions of solar wind (SW) origin that deflect around the Earth's magnetopause (MP), scatter and neutralize from the anti-sunward part of the IBEX-Hi sunshade, and continue into the instrument as neutral atoms, behaving indistinguishably from ENAs emitted from distant plasma sources. While this background pollutes observations of outer heliospheric ENAs, it provides a clear signature of IBEX crossings over the magnetospheric boundaries. In this study, we investigate IBEX encounters with the magnetosheath boundaries using ∼8 yr of orbital data, and we determine the MP and bow shock (BS) locations derived from this background signal. We find 280 BS crossings from X GSE ∼ 11 Re to X GSE ∼ -36 Re and 241 MP crossings from X GSE ∼ 6 Re to X GSE ∼ -48 Re. We compare IBEX BS and MP crossing locations to those from IMP-8, Geotail, Cluster, Magion-4, ISEE, and Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, and we find that IBEX crossing locations overlap with the BS and MP locations inferred from these other data sets. In this paper, we demonstrate how IBEX can be used to identify magnetosheath crossings, and extend boundary observations well past the terminator, thus further constraining future models of magnetosheath boundaries. Abstract
Background:Inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is caused by multiple cell types, including infiltrating inflammatory cells, such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, macrophages, and spindle-shaped fibroblasts. Especially, we are focusing on fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs). In our previous study, we have reported that FLSs were positive for multiple markers including CD14, CD68 and HLA-DR, and were dendritic-shaped cells constituting nursing phenomenon between lymph or plasma cells. In addition, in our recent study, we found that CD14+FLSs were positive for vimentin (VIM), which is a marker for mesenchymal cells. There are still many issues to be discussed regarding CD14+VIM+ cells.Objectives:To investigate the relationship between CD14+VIM+ cells and the degree of synovitis in rheumatoid arthritis.Methods:Synovial tissues collected from RA patients who underwent joint surgeries were prepared for this study. First, the proportions of CD14+ cells in RA synovial tissue and control were analyzed using flow cytometry and the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines released by CD14+ cells in RA synovial tissue and control were examined by ELISA. Next, the proportions of CD14+VIM+ cells in RA synovial tissue and control were examined immunohistologically and then we analyzed the results using image analysis software. Also, we statistically analyzed the relationship between the proportion of CD14+VIM+ cells, the degree of synovitis, and clinical data.Results:Results of flow cytometry showed that CD14+ cells were frequently observed in RA synovial tissue than control. Cultured CD14+ cells released more inflammatory cytokines than cultured CD14- cells. Also, results of immunohistological staining showed that many CD14+VIM+ cells were observed in RA synovial tissue than in control. The proportion of CD14+VIM+ cells was correlated with Krenn synovitis score. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease are advised to undergo selective revascularization surgery based on cerebral hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays for the detection of reduced CBF in such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-seven patients underwent brain perfusion SPECT and pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using standard postlabeling delay (1525 ms) and Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays. For Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays, based on data obtained from the 7 sub-boluses with combinations of different labeling durations and postlabeling delays, CBF corrected by the arterial transit time was calculated on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Using a 3D stereotaxic template, we automatically placed ROIs in the ipsilateral cerebellar hemisphere and 5 MCA territories in the symptomatic cerebral hemisphere; then, the ratio of the MCA to cerebellar ROI was calculated. RESULTS The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting reduced SPECT-CBF ratios (<0.686) was significantly greater for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios (0.885) than for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratios (0.786) (P = .001). The sensitivity and negative predictive value for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios were 100% (95% confidence interval, 100%-100%) and significantly higher than the sensitivity (95% CI, 44%-80%) and negative predictive value (95% CI, 88%-97%) for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratio, respectively. CONCLUSIONS ASL MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays may be applicable as a screening tool because it can detect reduced CBF on brain perfusion SPECT with 100% sensitivity and a 100% negative predictive value in adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease.

Abstract
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common morbidity complicating preterm birth. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW), a measure of the variation of red blood cell size, could reflect oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in many diseases such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, and other diseases. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate perinatal factors affecting RDW and to validate whether RDW could be a potential biomarker for BPD. A total of 176 preterm infants born at < 30 weeks were included in this study. They were categorized into BPD (n = 85) and non-BPD (n = 91) infants. RDW at birth and 14 days and 28 days of life (DOL 14, DOL 28) were measured. Clinical data were obtained from all subjects at Fukushima Medical University (Fukushima, Japan). The mean RDW at birth, DOL 14 and DOL 28 were 16.1%, 18.6%, 20.1%, respectively. Small for gestational age (SGA), chorioamnionitis (CAM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), gestational age and birth weight were significantly associated with RDW at birth. SGA, BPD and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion before DOL 14 were associated with RDW at DOL 14. BPD and RBC transfusion before DOL 14 were associated with RDW at DOL 28. Compared with non-BPD infants, mean RDW at DOL 14 (21.1% vs. 17.6%, P < 0.001) and DOL 28 (22.2% vs. 18.2%, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in BPD infants. Multivariate analysis revealed that RDW at DOL 28 was significantly higher in BPD infants (P = 0.001, odds ratio 1.63; 95% CI 1.22–2.19). Receiver operating characteristic analysis for RDW at DOL 28 in infants with and without BPD yielded an area under the curve of 0.87 (95% CI 0.78–0.91, P < 0.001). RDW at DOL 28 with mild BPD (18.1% vs. 21.3%, P < 0.001), moderate BPD (18.1% vs. 21.2%, P < 0.001), and severe BPD (18.1% vs. 24.0%, P < 0.001) were significantly higher than those with non-BPD, respectively. Furthermore, there are significant differences of RDW at DOL 28 among mild, moderate, and severe BPD. In summary, we conclude that RDW at DOL 28 could serve as a biomarker for predicting BPD and its severity. The mechanism by which RDW at DOL 28 is associated with the pathogenesis of BPD needs further elucidation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fetal brain is vulnerable to severe and sustained hypoxia during and after birth, which can lead to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). HIE is characterized by clinical and laboratory evidence of acute or subacute brain injury. The role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of brain injury and their relation to neurological outcomes of asphyxiated neonates are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated cytokine profile related to cerebral palsy (CP) with neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and HIE severity. METHODS Eligible subjects were HIE newborns with a gestational age between 36 and 42 weeks. We included newborns who was born at our NICU and did not admit to NICU as healthy controls. The study comprised 52 newborns, including 13 with mild to severe HIE and 39 healthy control. Serum cytokine profiles were performed using a LUMINEX cytokine kit (R&D Systems). RESULTS VEGF, MCP-1, IL-15, IL-12p70, IL-12p40, IL-1Ra, IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IFN-γ, G-CSF and eotaxin in the HIE patients were significantly increased compared with the healthy neonates. In the subgroup analysis, IL-6 and G-CSF were significantly increased in CP infants (n = 5) compared with non-CP infants (n = 8). Five and eight HIE patients were classified into the mild HIE and moderate-severe HIE groups, respectively. IL-6, 10, 1Ra, and G-CSF in the moderate-severe HIE group were significantly higher than those in the mild HIE group. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that higher serum IL-6 and G-CSF at birth in HIE patients were associated with CP and moderate-severe HIE.

Abstract
Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT) arises from fetomaternal platelet incompatibility that results in transplacental passage of maternal antibodies mostly against fetal human platelet antigens (HPA), whereas NAIT due to anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of Down syndrome (DS) with NAIT that was attributed to HLA antibodies. A boy with DS was delivered at 36 weeks' gestation. His platelet count declined to 13.0 × 109/L, suggestive of NAIT rather than other conditions, including transient abnormal myelopoiesis. Random platelet concentrates and intravenous immunoglobulin administration resolved the thrombocytopenia without clinical complications. Immunoserological investigations detected anti-HLA, but no anti-HPA antibodies in samples from the patient and the mother. HLA typing and cross-matching indicated that anti-HLA antibodies to paternal HLA A31 and B61, which had probably been induced during a prior pregnancy, led to NAIT in this case. Although it is a rare condition, healthcare providers should consider NAIT due to HLA antibodies and be vigilant for subsequent cases in DS.

Abstract
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common cause of pulmonary disease in preterm infants. The soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) is implicated in the development of various pulmonary diseases. The objectives of the current study were to investigate perinatal factors associated with serum sRAGE levels at birth and to establish whether serum sRAGE could be a biomarker for BPD. This retrospective single-center study was conducted at Fukushima Medical University Hospital's Department of Pediatrics Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from April 2014 to September 2020. Mechanically ventilated or oxygenated neonates born at <32 weeks gestational age and healthy control neonates were included in this study. Serum sRAGE levels in cord blood were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Eighty-four preterm infants born at <32 weeks and 40 healthy infants were identified. The 84 born at <32 weeks were categorized as BPD (n = 34) or non-BPD (n = 50) neonates. The median gestational age (GA) and birthweight (BW) were significantly lower in BPD vs. non-BPD neonates (24.4 vs. 27.6 weeks, P < 0.001, 634 vs. 952 g, P < 0.001, respectively). Serum sRAGE at birth in all 124 preterm and term infants significantly correlated with BW (r = 0.417, P < 0.0001) and GA (r = 0.415, P < 0.0001). Among those born at <32 weeks, median serum sRAGE levels at birth were significantly lower in infants with BPD than without (1,726 vs. 2,797 pg/mL, P = 0.0005). Receiver operating characteristic analysis for sRAGE levels at birth in infants with and without BPD revealed that the area under the curve was 0.724 (95% confidence interval 0.714-0.834, P = 0.001). However, serum RAGE levels were not associated with severity of BPD. Serum sRAGE levels at birth were significantly correlated with BW and GA. Furthermore, serum sRAGE levels at birth could serve as a biomarker for predicting BPD, but not its severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During storage, the potassium level of red blood cell (RBC) components increases, especially after irradiation. Neonates are prone to hyperkalemia, for example, non-oliguric hyperkalemia, so using potassium adsorption filters during transfusion may be helpful. To overcome dilution of RBC components caused by saline priming of existing potassium adsorption filters, a downsized potassium adsorption filter for neonates (PAF-n, Kawasumi Laboratories Inc., Tokyo, Japan) was developed. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS To assess the performance of PAF-n, its adsorption efficiency and RBC recovery rate were evaluated by testing pre-filtration and serial post-filtration (0-30 mL, 30-60 mL, 60-90 mL, and 90-120 mL) samples from 8 RBC components. RESULTS The average potassium adsorption rate of the PAF-n was 90.5% ± 0.78%, and never less than 89.0% in any of 8 RBC components. RBC recovery rates were 99.3% ± 1.12%. CONCLUSION The PAF-n showed an effective potassium ability with negligible RBC dilution.

Abstract
Platelets parameters including platelet count (PLT), plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are associated with various physiological and pathological functions in various disease. However, few studies have addressed whether perinatal factors may be associated with platelet parameters at birth in a large cohort of late preterm and term neonates. The aim of this study to investigate perinatal factors affecting platelet parameters in late preterm and term neonates. We retrospectively investigated platelet parameters including PLT, PCT, MPV, and PDW on the first day of life in 142 late preterm and 258 term neonates admitted to our NICU from 2006 through 2020. PLT, MPV, PCT, PDW on Day 0 did not significantly differ between the two groups. In term neonates, multivariate analysis revealed that PCT correlated with being small for gestational age (SGA) (β = -0.168, P = 0.006), pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) (β = -0.135, P = 0.026) and male sex (β = -0.185, P = 0.002). PLT was associated with SGA (β = -0.186, P = 0.002), PIH (β = -0.137, P = 0.024) and male sex (β = -0.166, P = 0.006). In late preterm neonates, multivariate analysis revealed that PLT were associated with PIH, whereas no factors associated with PDW and MPV were found. In all patients studied, chorioamnionitis (CAM) was significantly associated with MPV (CAM = 10.3 fL vs. no CAM = 9.7 fL, P<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that SGA, male sex and PIH were associated with PCT and PLT. This study demonstrates that different maternal and neonatal complications affect platelet parameters in late preterm and term neonates.

Abstract
Background and purpose A transient ischemic attack (TIA) can occur without self‐awareness of symptoms. We aimed to investigate characteristics of patients with a tissue‐based diagnosis of TIA but having no self‐awareness of their symptoms and whose symptoms were witnessed by bystanders. Methods We used data from the multicenter registry of 1414 patients with a clinical diagnosis of TIA. For patients without evidence of ischemic lesions on imaging, clinical characteristics were compared between patients with and without self‐awareness of their TIA symptoms. Results Among 896 patients (559 men, median age of 70 years), 59 (6.6%) were unaware of their TIA symptoms, but had those symptoms witnessed by bystanders. Patients without self‐awareness of symptoms were older and more frequently female, and more likely to have previous history of stroke, premorbid disability, and atrial fibrillation, but less likely to have dyslipidemia than those with self‐awareness. Patients without self‐awareness of symptoms arrive at hospitals earlier than those with self‐awareness (P < 0.001). ABCD2 score was higher in patients without self‐awareness of symptoms than those with self‐awareness (median 5 vs. 4, P = 0.002). Having no self‐awareness of symptoms was a significant predictor of ischemic stroke within 1 year after adjustment for sex, ABCD2 score, and onset to arrival time (hazard ratio = 2.44, 95% confidential interval: 1.10–4.83), but was not significant after further adjustment for arterial stenosis or occlusion. Conclusions Patients with a TIA but having no self‐awareness of their symptoms might have higher risk of subsequent ischemic stroke rather than those with self‐awareness, suggesting urgent management is needed even if patients have no self‐awareness of symptoms.

Abstract
The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission provides global energetic neutral atom (ENA) observations from the heliosphere and the Earth's magnetosphere, including spatial, temporal, and energy information. IBEX views the magnetosphere from the sides and almost always perpendicular to noon-midnight plane. We report the first ENA images of the energization process in the Earth's ion foreshock and magnetosheath regions. We show ENA flux and spectral images of the dayside magnetosphere with significant energization of ENA plasma sources (above ~2.7 keV) in the region magnetically connected to the Earth's bow shock (BS) in its quasi-parallel configuration of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). We also show that the ion energization increases gradually with decreasing IMF-BS angle, suggesting more efficient suprathermal ion acceleration deeper in the quasi-parallel foreshock.

Abstract
Background Although disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a critical disease, there is few gold standard interventions in neonatal medicine. The aim of this study is to reveal factors affecting neonatal DIC at birth and to assess the effectiveness of rTM and FFP for DIC in neonates at birth. Methods We retrospectively evaluated DIC score on the first day of life in neonates with underlying conditions associated with DIC. DIC in neonates was diagnosed according to Japan Society of Obstetrical, Gynecological & Neonatal Hematology 2016 neonatal DIC criteria. Results Comparing neonates with DIC scores of ≥3 (n = 103) to those < 3 (n = 263), SGA, birth asphyxia, low Apgar score, hemangioma, hydrops, PIH, and PA were statistically increased. Among 55 neonates underwent DIC treatment, 53 had birth asphyxia and 12 had intraventricular hemorrhage. Forty-one neonates received FFP or a combination of FFP and antithrombin (FFP group), while 14 neonates received rTM or a combination of rTM, FFP, and antithrombin (rTM group). DIC score before treatment in the rTM group was significantly higher than in the FFP group (4.7 vs 3.6, P < 0.05). After treatment, DIC scores in both groups were significantly reduced on Day 1 and Day 2 (P < 0.05). Conclusions Among various factors associated with DIC in neonates at birth, birth asphyxia is particularly significant. Furthermore, rTM in combination with FFP therapy was effective for neonatal DIC at birth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dynamic changes in cerebrovascular reactivity after acetazolamide administration vary markedly among patients with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. MR quantitative susceptibility mapping can dynamically quantify the cerebral magnetic susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dynamic changes in susceptibility after administration of acetazolamide on 7T quantitative susceptibility mapping are associated with pre-existing states of CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in the cerebral hemispheres with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-five patients underwent 7T MR imaging at baseline and at 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration. Differences between the susceptibility of venous structures and surrounding brain tissue were calculated in the quantitative susceptibility mapping images. Susceptibility differences at 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration relative to baseline were calculated in 97 cerebral hemispheres with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen were also calculated using 15O-gas PET in the resting state. RESULTS Dynamic changes of susceptibility after acetazolamide administration were classified into 3 patterns: abnormally increasing 5 or 10 minutes after acetazolamide administration; abnormally decreasing within 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration; and remaining unchanged after acetazolamide administration. CBV was significantly greater in the first pattern than in the latter 2. The cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen differed significantly in descending order from the first to middle to last pattern. CONCLUSIONS Dynamic changes of susceptibility after acetazolamide administration on 7T MR quantitative susceptibility mapping are associated with pre-existing states of CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease.

Abstract
To date, few studies have investigated whether perinatal factors affect coagulation parameters at birth in preterm and term neonates. We retrospectively investigated coagulation factors on day 1 in 609 consecutive neonates admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit between January 2010 and December 2017. We measured coagulation factors on day 1 using peripheral blood samples. Multivariate analysis revealed that prothrombin time-international normalized ratio correlated with intraventricular hemorrhage (p = 0.000; β = 0.180) and placental abruption (PA; p = 0.000; β = 0.142). Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) correlated with birth weight (BW; p = 0.000; β = - 0.217), gestational age (GA; p = 0.000; β = - 0.282), and PA (p = 0.000; β = 0.181). Fibrinogen concentration was associated with respiratory distress syndrome (p = 0.007; β = - 0.114), pregnancy-induced hypertension (p = 0.000; β = - 0.141), and Apgar score at 1 minute (p = 0.043; β = 0.147). Furthermore, the level of d-dimer inversely correlated with Apgar score at 5 minutes (p = 0.049). Finally, antithrombin III levels positively correlated with GA (p = 0.000) and BW (p = 0.000). Thus, maternal and neonatal complications affect coagulation parameters in preterm and term neonates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glucocorticoids play an important role in endocrine control. The association of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene polymorphisms with altered sensitivity to glucocorticoid therapy has been reported in adults. However, there are few such reports in infants. The present study analyzed the prevalence of four GR polymorphisms in preterm infants born before 30 weeks of gestation and determined the associations between these polymorphisms and clinical outcomes in the infants. METHODS Totally, 41 preterm infants born at two hospitals in Fukushima were retrospectively screened for the presence of four GR gene polymorphisms, using a TaqMan single-nucleotide polymorphism genotyping assay. The effect of GR gene polymorphisms on clinical outcomes during hospitalization was evaluated. The following primary clinical outcomes were assessed: refractory hypotension in the acute phase and/or severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, maximum dopamine and dobutamine doses administered, and total hydrocortisone dose administered in the first 48 h of life. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression was used to assess the association between clinical factors and refractory hypotension. RESULTS Of the four GR polymorphisms, only the BclI polymorphism was detected. The genotype distribution was as follows: C/C, 33; C/G, 8; and G/G, 0 infants. Significant differences were observed between the C/C and C/G genotypes with respect to the following variables: refractory hypotension (6% vs. 50%), dopamine dose [3.0 (2.0-4.0) vs. 4.8 (4.0-7.5) μg/kg/min], dobutamine dose [2.4 (0.0-3.6) vs. 4.0 (0-10.0) μg/kg/min], and total hydrocortisone dose administered in the first 48 h of life [2.0 (0-10.0) vs. 6.0 (0-12.0) mg/kg]. Multivariate analysis showed that the BclI genotype (C/C) was significantly less associated with refractory hypotension in the acute phase (odds ratio, 0.008; 95% confidence interval, 0.000-0.371; p = 0.013). CONCLUSION The incidence of refractory hypotension in infants with the C/C genotype was initially expected to be higher than that in infants with the C/G genotype. However, the results of this study were rather different from what we originally expected. The suppressive effect of antenatal steroid use on the HPA axis of the preterm infants with the BclI variant may be associated with refractory hypotension in the acute phase.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationships between serum cytokine concentrations and chorioamnionitis (CAM) and CAM-related bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants. METHODS Serum was collected at 0 and 7 days after birth from 36 premature infants born at <32 weeks of gestation. We examined the relationships between 30 cytokine concentrations and CAM, BPD, and other perinatal factors. RESULTS On day 0, GM-CSF, IL-15, IL-17, IL-2, IL-2R, VEGF, and MIG concentrations were significantly higher in the CAM group (n = 17) than in the non-CAM group (n = 19). These concentrations had decreased by day 7 and were similar in both groups. The IL-12p70 concentration on day 0 was significantly lower in the BPD group (n = 16) than in the non-BPD group (n = 15). BPD incidence was similar between the CAM and non-CAM groups. CONCLUSIONS These data support the hypothesis that intrauterine inflammation is not a primary risk factor for BPD. The immunological environment at birth or soon after, rather than intrauterine fetal inflammation (e.g., CAM), is a primary risk factor for BPD onset in preterm infants. Decreased inflammatory responses are particularly relevant, as indicated by the relationship between BPD and low serum IL-12p70 concentrations on day 0.

Abstract
Bm and A1 Bm phenotypes are the most frequent ABO variants in the Japanese population. The B antigen on Bm red blood cells is only detectable by adsorption and elution tests, and plasma B-transferase activity is usually detected at half or less levels compared with that of common B. Recently, a B allele lacking an erythroid cell-specific transcription enhancer in intron 1 of the ABO gene was identified from individuals with Bm and A1 Bm phenotypes, which could explain the unique serologic properties of Bm . In the Japanese Red Cross Society, eight Blood Centers tested blood samples from donors throughout Japan and collected blood samples from 888 Bm and 415 A1 Bm individuals. DNA analysis revealed that 1300 of 1303 (99·77%) individuals had the B allele with a 5·8 kb deletion (c.28 + 5110_10889del), which included the enhancer element.

Abstract
Summary
Objectives:
The objectives of this research are to examine the current situation of computer-based information support of clinical research in hospitals and to determine the expectations of clinicians toward clinical research support functions of hospital information systems (HISs) in both China and Japan.
Methods:
172 clinicians from 42 major hospitals in China (2 groups), and 568 clinicians from 79 university hospitals in Japan (2 groups), were surveyed by postal questionnaire during July and August, 1999. The Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to analyze the differences among the groups.
Results:
The total response rate was 66.9%. The result shows that 94.8% of the Japanese clinicians, 3.5 times more than those in China, use computers almost every day. High significance was shown for the frequency of non-HIS based information resources used by clinicians between China and Japan (p <0.001), whereas no significance for the frequency of HIS use by clinicians between the China I and Japan I groups (p = 0.725) was found. 33.3% clinicians in China thought they could obtain 30-50% of the necessary patient data for clinical research from the HIS, about 2 times more than in Japan (p = 0.009).
Conclusions:
Although the degree of computer involvement among clinicians in Japan is much higher than in China, the computer-based hospital information systems have not been developed well for supporting clinical research in both countries. The clinicians expect comprehensive computerized patient records (CPRs) and full use of patient related information in the existing HISs to support their clinical research.

Abstract
Summary
Objectives:
The objectives of this study were to investigate the transitional probability distribution of medical term boundaries between characters and to develop a parsing algorithm specifically for medical texts.
Methods:
Medical terms in Japanese computed tomography (CT) reports were identified using the ChaSen morphological analysis system. MeSH-based medical terms (51,385 entries), obtained from the metathesaurus in the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS, 2005AA), were added as a medical dictionary for ChaSen. A radiographer corrected the set of results containing 300 parsed CT reports. In addition, two radiologists checked the medical term parsing of 200 CT sentences.
Results:
We obtained modified inter-annotator agreement scores for the text corrected by the radiologists. We retrieved the transitional probability as the conditional probability of a uni-gram, bi-gram, and tri-gram. The highest transitional probability P(Ci | Ci - 2*Ci - 1) was 1.00. For an example of anatomical location, the term “pulmonary hilum” was parsed as a tri-gram.
Conclusions:
Retrieval of transitional probability will improve the accuracy of parsing compound medical terms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The rare Ko phenotype lacks all 36 antigens in the Kell blood system. The molecular basis of the Ko phenotype has been investigated, and more than 40 silent KEL alleles are reported by many investigators. The majority of silent alleles are the KEL*02 background. Here, we report molecular genetic analysis of the KEL gene in Japanese individuals with the Ko phenotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Ko phenotype was screened from Japanese blood donors for several years using monoclonal anti-Ku or anti-K14 by an automated blood grouping system PK7300. Kell-related antigens were typed by standard tube tests. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples, and KEL gene was analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing. RESULTS We collected 35 Ko blood samples with K-k-, Kp(a-b-), Js(a-b-) and K14-. PCR and sequence analysis revealed that 11 individuals were homozygous for a mutant KEL allele with a c.299G>C (p.Cys100Ser) mutation (rs. 200268316). Three individuals were homozygous for the KEL*02N.24 allele that is c.715G>T (p.Glu239*), and one individual was homozygous for the KEL*02N.40 allele that is c.1474C>T (p.Arg492*). Five individuals were homozygous for novel KEL alleles with single-nucleotide mutations, four individuals had a c.2175delC (p.Pro725 fs*43), and one individual had a c.328delA (p.Arg110 fs*79). The remaining 15 individuals were compound heterozygous, and eight new alleles were identified from them. CONCLUSIONS We identified three known and ten new silent KEL alleles from Japanese individuals with the Ko phenotype. The KEL allele with the c.299G>C (p.Cys100Ser) mutation was the most frequent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Preoperative hemodynamic impairment in the affected cerebral hemisphere is associated with the development of cerebral hyperperfusion following carotid endarterectomy. Cerebral oxygen extraction fraction images generated from 7T MR quantitative susceptibility mapping correlate with oxygen extraction fraction images on positron-emission tomography. The present study aimed to determine whether preoperative oxygen extraction fraction imaging generated from 7T MR quantitative susceptibility mapping could identify patients at risk for cerebral hyperperfusion following carotid endarterectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-seven patients with unilateral internal carotid artery stenosis (≥70%) underwent preoperative 3D T2*-weighted imaging using a multiple dipole-inversion algorithm with a 7T MR imager. Quantitative susceptibility mapping images were then obtained, and oxygen extraction fraction maps were generated. Quantitative brain perfusion single-photon emission CT was also performed before and immediately after carotid endarterectomy. ROIs were automatically placed in the bilateral middle cerebral artery territories in all images using a 3D stereotactic ROI template, and affected-to-contralateral ratios in the ROIs were calculated on quantitative susceptibility mapping-oxygen extraction fraction images. RESULTS Ten patients (13%) showed post-carotid endarterectomy hyperperfusion (cerebral blood flow increases of ≥100% compared with preoperative values in the ROIs on brain perfusion SPECT). Multivariate analysis showed that a high quantitative susceptibility mapping-oxygen extraction fraction ratio was significantly associated with the development of post-carotid endarterectomy hyperperfusion (95% confidence interval, 33.5-249.7; P = .002). Sensitivity, specificity, and positive- and negative-predictive values of the quantitative susceptibility mapping-oxygen extraction fraction ratio for the prediction of the development of post-carotid endarterectomy hyperperfusion were 90%, 84%, 45%, and 98%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative oxygen extraction fraction imaging generated from 7T MR quantitative susceptibility mapping identifies patients at risk for cerebral hyperperfusion following carotid endarterectomy.

Abstract
Background: We hypothesized that gallbladder (GB) volume is affected by serial changes during the early infancy period in extremely premature infants. Methods: We conducted a prospective study of extremely premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Fukushima Medical University Hospital, Fukushima City, Japan between January 2014 and December 2015. GB volume was measured by an abdominal ultrasound ellipsoid method between Day 0 and Day 56 after birth within 60 minutes before enteral feeding. We calculated GB volume (mL)/weight (kg), which was evaluated as GV/W. Results: Intotal, 30 infants were included. Themediangestationalageoftheinfantswas 26 weeks 5 days (range, 23 weeks 1 day–28 weeks 6 days), and the median birth weight was 731 g (range, 398–1220 g). The detection rate of GB decreased in the infants over time; the rates were > 93% between Day 0 and Day 7 and < 77% between Day 10 and Day 56 after birth. GV/W decreased in the infants over time. The median GV/W values were 0.18 (range, 0.05 –0.59) in infants on admission and constantly < 0.05 in those between Day 10 and Day 56 after birth. There was no correlation of GV/W with clinical variables after birth. Conclusion: It is considered that GB volume is not affected by serial changes without nonfavor-able course of enteral nutrition.

Abstract
Bronchiolitis obliterans after lung transplantation is a major cause of postoperative mortality in which T cell-mediated immunity is known to play an important role. However, the exact contribution of natural killer (NK) cells, which have functions similar to CD8+ T cells, has not been defined. Here, we assessed the role of NK cells in murine bronchiolitis obliterans through heterotopic tracheal transplantations and found a greater percentage of NK cells in allografts than in isografts. Depletion of NK cells using an anti-NK1.1 antibody attenuated bronchiolitis obliterans in transplant recipients compared with controls. In terms of NK cell effector functions, an improvement in bronchiolitis obliterans was observed in perforin-KO recipient mice compared to wild type (WT). Furthermore, we found upregulation of NKG2D-ligand in allografts and demonstrated the significance of this using grafts expressing Rae-1, a murine NKG2D-ligand, which induced severe bronchiolitis obliterans in WT and Rag-1 KO recipients. This effect was ameliorated by injection of anti-NKG2D blocking antibody. Together, these results suggest that cytotoxicity resulting from activation of NK cells through NKG2D leads to the development of murine bronchiolitis obliterans.

Abstract
Aim We determined whether the bacteria in the lower respiratory tract (LRT) in extremely premature infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) are different from those with nonsevere BPD. Study Design We conducted a retrospective study of extremely premature infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Fukushima Medical University Hospital, Japan between April 2005 and March 2014. We screened for the bacterial colonization of the LRT using tracheobronchial aspirate fluid. Results A total of 169 extremely premature infants were included. Overall, 102 did not experience severe BPD, whereas the remaining 67 experienced severe BPD. Corynebacterium species (Cs) were more frequently detected in the severe BPD than nonsevere BPD infants (p = 0.03). There were significant differences between infants with and without severe BPD in the duration of endotracheal ventilation (p = 0.00, odds ratio [OR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.06), the duration of supplemental oxygen (p = 0.00, OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.03) before 36 weeks of postmenstrual age, and the frequency of sepsis after 7 postnatal days (p = 0.01, OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.18-2.54). Conclusion Cs are more likely to be present in the severe BPD infants with longer duration of endotracheal ventilation.

Abstract
Background Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS), which is characterized by a typical facial appearance, growth retardation, mental retardation, seizures, and congenital cardiac defects, has an estimated incidence of 1 per 50,000 births. Case We report a case of a low birth weight neonate with WHS and seizures, as well as persistent pulmonary hypertension in the early neonatal period. Apgar scores were 6 (1 minute) and 8 (5 minutes) with evident retraction. After admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, the patient had tonic-clonic seizures with epilepticus 30 minute after birth. Although the seizures were uncontrollable, continuous thiopental administration was effective for seizure mitigation. Conclusion Neonatal seizures with WHS occur rarely. This is the first case report on seizures just after birth in a neonate with WHS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Preoperative identification of plaque vulnerability may allow improved risk stratification for patients considered for carotid endarterectomy. The present study aimed to determine which plaque imaging technique, cardiac-gated black-blood fast spin-echo, magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition of gradient echo, source image of 3D time-of-flight MR angiography, or noncardiac-gated spin-echo, most accurately predicts development of microembolic signals during exposure of carotid arteries in carotid endarterectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty patients with ICA stenosis (≥70%) underwent the 4 sequences of preoperative MR plaque imaging of the affected carotid bifurcation and then carotid endarterectomy under transcranial Doppler monitoring of microembolic signals in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery. The contrast ratio of the carotid plaque was calculated by dividing plaque signal intensity by sternocleidomastoid muscle signal intensity. RESULTS Microembolic signals during exposure of carotid arteries were detected in 23 patients (29%), 3 of whom developed new neurologic deficits postoperatively. Those deficits remained at 24 hours after surgery in only 1 patient. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve to discriminate between the presence and absence of microembolic signals during exposure of the carotid arteries was significantly greater with nongated spin-echo than with black-blood fast spin-echo (difference between areas, 0.258; P < .0001), MPRAGE (difference between areas, 0.106; P = .0023), or source image of 3D time-of-flight MR angiography (difference between areas, 0.128; P = .0010). Negative binomial regression showed that in the 23 patients with microembolic signals, the contrast ratio was associated with the number of microembolic signals only in nongated spin-echo (risk ratio, 1.36; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.97; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Nongated spin-echo may predict the development of microembolic signals during exposure of the carotid arteries in carotid endarterectomy more accurately than other MR plaque imaging techniques.

Abstract
Recently, the involvement of mutation and deletion of transcription regulatory elements in the Bm , Am , A3 and B3 phenotypes has been reported. In the present study, we carried out genetic analysis of individuals with A3 and B3 using peptide nucleic acid-clamping PCR to exclude amplification of O alleles. Two single-point mutations, -76G>C and -68G>T, were found in the ABO promoter on the A-allele in three A3 individuals and on the B allele in a B3 individual, respectively. Transient transfection of luciferase reporter plasmids carrying the same mutations into K562 cells revealed decreased luciferase activity in comparison with that carrying the wild-type promoter. These observations suggest that the mutations downregulate the promoter activity, leading to reduction in A- or B-antigen expression on red blood cells in individuals with the A3 and B3 phenotypes.

Abstract
We have developed a novel concept for a Compact Dual Ion Composition Experiment (CoDICE) that simultaneously provides high quality plasma and energetic ion composition measurements over 6 decades in ion energy in a wide variety of space plasma environments. CoDICE measures the two critical ion populations in space plasmas: (1) mass and ionic charge state composition and 3D velocity and angular distributions of ∼10 eV/q-40 keV/q plasma ions—CoDICE-Lo and (2) mass composition, energy spectra, and angular distributions of ∼30 keV-10 MeV energetic ions—CoDICE-Hi. CoDICE uses a common, integrated Time-of-Flight (TOF) versus residual energy (E) subsystem for measuring the two distinct ion populations. This paper describes the CoDICE design concept, and presents results of the laboratory tests of the TOF portion of the TOF vs. E subsystem, focusing specifically on (1) investigation of spill-over and contamination rates on the start and stop microchannel plate (MCP) anodes vs. secondary electron steering and focusing voltages, scanned around their corresponding model-optimized values, (2) TOF measurements and resolution and angular resolution, and (3) cross-contamination of the start and stop MCPs' singles rates from CoDICE-Lo and -Hi, and (4) energy resolution of avalanche photodiodes near the lower end of the CoDICE-Lo energy range. We also discuss physical effects that could impact the performance of the TOF vs. E subsystem in a flight instrument. Finally, we discuss advantages of the CoDICE design concept by comparing with capabilities and resources of existing flight instruments.
