Simultaneous Urea and Phosphate Recovery from Synthetic Urine by Electrochemical Stabilization

Urine is a widely available renewable source of nitrogen and phosphorous. The nitrogen in urine is present in the form of urea, which is rapidly hydrolyzed to ammonia and carbonic acid by the urease enzymes occurring in nature. In order to efficiently recover urea, the inhibition of urease must be done, usually by increasing the pH value above 11. This method, however, usually is based on external chemical dosing, limiting the sustainability of the process. In this work, the simultaneous recovery of urea and phosphorous from synthetic urine was aimed at by means of electrochemical pH modulation. Electrochemical cells were constructed and used for urea stabilization from synthetic urine by the in situ formation of OH- ions at the cathode. In addition, phosphorous precipitation with divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) in the course of pH elevation was studied. Electrochemical cells equipped with commercial (Fumasep FKE) and developmental (PSEBS SU) cation exchange membranes (CEM) were used in this study to carry out urea stabilization and simultaneous P-recovery at an applied current density of 60 A m-2. The urea was successfully stabilized for a long time (more than 1 month at room temperature and nearly two months at 4 °C) at a pH of 11.5. In addition, >82% P-recovery could be achieved in the form of precipitate, which was identified as amorphous calcium magnesium phosphate (CMP) by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Utilization of Agro-Wastes in Biohydrogen Fermentation by Various Microorganisms

Biohydrogen production based on agro-industrial wastes might be an attractive and effective technology for providing an energy source in the future. Dark fermentation is considered to be one of the most suitable biohydrogen formation processes. In this paper, various agro-industrial wastes as well as microorganisms applied for biohydrogen formation are reviewed.

Separation of Dissolved Gases from Aqueous Anaerobic Effluents Using Gas-Liquid Membrane Contactors

This study aimed to evaluate a gas-liquid membrane contactor for recovering the dissolved gases of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from model aqueous anaerobic effluents. For this purpose, synthetic effluents were prepared by using the gas mixtures of SE-1: 100/0, SE-2: 0/100 and SE-3: 50/50 CH4/CO2 vol.% as well as DI water. The units in which the synthetic effluent was prepared were coupled with a dense hollow fiber membrane module by employing argon gas at atmospheric pressure. The desorption of the gases CH4 and CO2 dissolved in the effluents was investigated with a countercurrent flow of the liquid on the lumen side. The effect of the sweep gas flow rate on the removal rate was also investigated. The results showed that the recovery rate of CH4 was slightly affected by increasing the sweep gas flow rate, while the recovery rate of CO2 was enhanced considerably. By applying a sweep gas flow rate of 20 mL/min, the recovery rate of both gases from SE-3 exceeded 50%.

Integration of gas-liquid membrane contactors into anaerobic digestion as a promising route to reduce uncontrolled greenhouse gas (CH4/CO2) emissions

In this research, the recovery of dissolved biogas (CO2/CH4) from synthetic anaerobic effluents was studied using non-porous, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), hollow-fibre gas-liquid membrane contactors towards the design of a reduced carbon-footprint integrated bioprocess. As a key parameter, the gas-to-liquid (G/L) ratio (employing argon as sweep gas) was systematically varied in the range of 0.5-2.0. The results showed on a 1 m2 PDMS module that increasing the liquid (effluent) flow rate favours the CH4 transport, while a higher sweep gas flow rate is preferable for the CO2 transport over CH4. Depending on the actual biogas composition and the CO2 content of the effluent, the methane recovery could be improved up to 63 % under steady-state conditions. In general, similar tendencies were observed when another PDMS membrane module with a smaller surface area (2 500 cm2) was applied hence, in this sense, the separation behaviour seems to be independent of the membrane size.

Studying microbial fuel cells equipped with heterogeneous ion exchange membranes: Electrochemical performance and microbial community assessment of anodic and membrane-surface biofilms

In this study, microbial fuel cells deploying heterogeneous ion exchange membranes were assessed. The behavior of the cells as a function of the membrane applied was evaluated in terms of maximal current density, electron recovery efficiency and energy production rate (up to 427.5 mA, 47.7 % and 660 J m^-2h^-1, respectively) at different substrate (acetate) feedings (2.15 - 8.6 mM). System performance was characterized in the light of oxygen and acetate crossovers. The effect of membranes (in relation to the oxygen mass transfer coefficient, k_O) on the microbial diversity of anodic and membrane-surface biofilms was investigated. Based on the relative abundance of bacterial orders, the two populations could be distinguished and membranes with larger k_O tended to promote more the air-tolerant microbes in the biofouling layer. This indicates that membrane k_O has a direct effect on membrane foulant microbial composition, and thus, on the expected time-stability of the membrane.

Study on the Compression Effect of Clothing on the Physiological Response of the Athlete

The study aimed to analyze whether the high compression of unique, tight-fitting sportswear influences the clothing physiology comfort of the athlete. Three specific sportswear with different compression were tested on four subjects while they were running on a treadmill with increasing intensity. The compression effect of the sportswear on the body of the test persons, the temperature distribution of the subjects, and the intensity of their perspiration during running were determined. The results indicate that the compression effect exerted by the garments significantly influences the clothing physiology comfort of the athlete; a higher compression load leads to more intense sweating and higher skin temperature.

Comparative Study on Anaerobic Degradation Processes of Pressed Liquid Fraction of Organic Solid Waste

Anaerobic degradation processes: anaerobic digestion (biogasification), biohydrogen fermentation (dark) and microbial fuel cells were applied to treat the organic fraction of a municipal solid waste. The processes were compared based on their ability of energy recovery and Chemical Oxygen Demand reduction.

Efficiency, operational stability and biofouling of novel sulfomethylated polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene cation exchange membrane in microbial fuel cells

In this work, a novel cation exchange membrane, PSEBS SU22 was deployed in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to examine system efficacy in line with membrane characteristics and inoculum source. It turned out that compared to a reference membrane (Nafion), employing PSEBS SU22 resulted in higher current density and electricity generation kinetics, while the electron recoveries were similar (19-28%). These outcomes indicated more beneficial ion transfer features and lower mass transfer-related losses in the PSEBS SU22-MFCs, supported by membrane water uptake, ion exchange capacity, ionic conductivity and permselectivity. By re-activating the membranes after (bio)foulant removal, PSEBS SU22 regained nearly its initial conductivity, highlighting a salient functional stability. Although the particular inoculum showed a clear effect on the microbial composition of the membrane biofouling layers, the dominance of aerobic species was revealed in all cases. Considering all the findings, the PSEBS SU22 seems to be promising for application in MFCs.

Investigating the Proton and Ion Transfer Properties of Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes Prepared for Bioelectrochemical Applications Using Hydrophobic Imidazolium-Type Ionic Liquids

Hydrophobic ionic liquids (IL) may offer a special electrolyte in the form of supported ionic liquid membranes (SILM) for microbial fuel cells (MFC) due to their advantageous mass transfer characteristics. In this work, the proton and ion transfer properties of SILMs made with IL containing imidazolium cation and [PF₆]⁻ and [NTf₂]⁻ anions were studied and compared to Nafion. It resulted that both ILs show better proton mass transfer and diffusion coefficient than Nafion. The data implied the presence of water microclusters permeating through [hmim][PF₆]-SILM to assist the proton transfer. This mechanism could not be assumed in the case of [NTf₂]⁻ containing IL. Ion transport numbers of K⁺, Na⁺, and H⁺ showed that the IL with [PF₆]⁻ anion could be beneficial in terms of reducing ion transfer losses in MFCs. Moreover, the conductivity of [bmim][PF₆]-SILM at low electrolyte concentration (such as in MFCs) was comparable to Nafion.

The influential role of external electrical load in microbial fuel cells and related improvement strategies: A review

The scope of the currentreviewis to discuss and evaluate the role of the external electrical load/resistor (EEL) on the overall behavior and functional properties of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, a comprehensive analysis is made by considering various levels of MFC architecture, such as electric and energy harvesting efficiency, anode electrode potential shifts, electro-active biofilm formation, cell metabolism and extracellular electron transfer mechanisms, as a function of the EEL and its control strategies. It is outlined that taking the regulation of EEL into account at MFC optimization is highly beneficial, and in order to support this step, in this review, a variety of guidelines are collected and analyzed.

Evaluation and ranking of polymeric ion exchange membranes used in microbial electrolysis cells for biohydrogen production

This work characterizes and comparatively assess two cation exchange membranes (PSEBS SU22 and CF22 R14) and one bipolar membrane (FBM) in microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), fed either by acetate or the mixture of volatile fatty acids as substrates. The PSEBS SU22 is a new, patent-pending material, while the CF22 R14 and FBM are developmental and commercialized products. Based on the various MEC performance measures, membranes were ranked by the EXPROM-2 method to reveal which of the polymeric membranes could be more beneficial from a complex, H₂ production efficiency viewpoint. It turned out that the substrate-type influenced the application potential of the membranes. Still, in total, the PSEBS SU22 was found competitive with the other alternative materials. The evaluation of MEC was also supported by analyzing anodic biofilms following electroactive bacteria's development over time.

Separation of Volatile Fatty Acids from Model Anaerobic Effluents Using Various Membrane Technologies

Effluents of anaerobic processes still contain valuable components, among which volatile fatty acids (VFAs) can be regarded and should be recovered and/or used further in applications such as microbial electrochemical technology to generate energy/energy carriers. To accomplish the separation of VFAs from waste liquors, various membrane-based solutions applying different transport mechanisms and traits are available, including pressure-driven nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) which are capable to clarify, fractionate and concentrate salts and organics. Besides, emerging techniques using a membrane such as forward osmosis (FO) and supported liquid membrane (SILM) technology can be taken into consideration for VFA separation. In this work, we evaluate these four various downstream methods (NF, RO, FO and SILM) to determine the best one, comparatively, for enriching VFAs from pH-varied model solutions composed of acetic, butyric and propionic acids in different concentrations. The assessment of the separation experiments was supported by statistical examination to draw more solid conclusions. Accordingly, it turned out that all methods can separate VFAs from the model solution. The highest average retention was achieved by RO (84% at the applied transmembrane pressure of 6 bar), while NF provided the highest permeance (6.5 L/m2hbar) and a high selectivity between different VFAs.

Investigating the specific role of external load on the performance versus stability trade-off in microbial fuel cells

The performance and behavior of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are influenced by among others the external load (R_ext). In this study, the anode-surface biofilm formation in MFCs operated under different R_ext selection/tracking-strategies was assessed. MFCs were characterized by electrochemical (voltage/current generation, polarization tests, EIS), molecular biological (microbial consortium analysis) and bioinformatics (principal component analysis) tools. The results indicated that the MFC with dynamic R_ext adjustment (as a function of the actual MFC internal resistance) achieved notably higher performance but relatively lower operational stability, mainly due to the acidification of the biofilm. The opposite (lower performance, increased stability) could be observed with the static (low or high) R_ext application (or OCV) strategies, where adaptive microbial processes were assumed. These possible adaptation phenomena were outlined by a theoretical framework and the significant impact of R_ext on the anode colonization process and energy recovery with MFCs was concluded.

Effect of shear velocity on dark fermentation for biohydrogen production using dynamic membrane

This study examined the effect of shear velocity on biohydrogen producing dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR) containing 50 µm polyester mesh as supporting material. Increase of shear velocity up to 6.75 m/h enhanced hydrogen production performance as well as biomass retention in both suspended and attached forms, while wash-out was found at a shear velocity of 11.69 m/h. The highest average HPR, HY, suspended biomass, and attached biomass were 26.56 ± 1.49 L/L-d, 1.78 ± 0.10 mol H₂/mol glucose_added, 9.99 ± 0.11 g VSS/L, and 8.82 g VSS/L, respectively, at a shear velocity of 6.75 m/h. Flux balance analysis showed homoacetogenic pathway decreased at the shear velocity of 4.70 m/h with the increase of hydrogen yield based on consumed substrate. The highest copy numbers of Clostridium butyricum was found at the optimum shear velocity. Shear velocity would be a critical operational criteria for continuous biohydrogen production using DMBR.

Enhancement of dark fermentative H2 production by gas separation membranes: A review

Biohydrogen production via dark fermentation is currently the most developed method considering its practical readiness for scale-up. However, technological issues to be resolved are still identifiable and should be of concern, particularly in terms of internal mass transfer. If sufficient liquid-to-gas H₂ mass transfer rates are not ensured, serious problems associated with the recovery of biohydrogen and consequent inhibition of the process can occur. Therefore, the continuous and effective removal of H₂ gas is required, which can be performed using gas separation membranes. In this review, we aim to analyze the literature experiences and knowledge regarding mass transfer enhancement approaches and show how membranes may contribute to this task by simultaneously processing the internal (headspace) gas, consisting mainly of H₂ and CO₂. Promising strategies related to biogas recirculation and integrated schemes using membranes will be presented and discussed to detect potential future research directions for improving biohydrogen technology.

Development and Application of Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes in Microbial Fuel Cell Technology: A Concise Overview

Membrane separators are key elements of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), especially of those constructed in a dual-chamber configuration. Until now, membranes made of Nafion have been applied the most widely to set-up MFCs. However, there is a broader agreement in the literature that Nafion is expensive and in many cases, does not meet the actual (mainly mass transfer-specific) requirements demanded by the process and users. Driven by these issues, there has been notable progress in the development of alternative materials for membrane fabrication, among which those relying on the deployment of ionic liquids are emerging. In this review, the background of and recent advances in ionic liquid-containing separators, particularly supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), designed for MFC applications are addressed and evaluated. After an assessment of the basic criteria to be fulfilled by membranes in MFCs, experiences with SILMs will be outlined, along with important aspects of transport processes. Finally, a comparison with the literature is presented to elaborate on how MFCs installed with SILM perform relative to similar systems assembled with other, e.g., Nafion, membranes.

Electro-conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to low-carbon methane by bioelectromethanogenesis process in microbial electrolysis cells: The current status and future perspective

Given the aggravated greenhouse effect caused by CO₂ and the current energy shortage, CO₂ capture and reuse has been gaining ever-increasing concerns. Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs) has been considered to be a promising alternative to recycle CO₂ bioelectrochemically to low-carbon electrofuels such as CH₄ by combining electroactive microorganisms with electrochemical stimulation, enabling both CO₂ fixation and energy recovery. In spite of the numerous efforts dedicated in this field in recent years, there are still many problems that hinder CO₂ bioelectroconversion technique from the scaling-up and potential industrialization. This review comprehensively summarized the working principles, extracellular electron transfers behaviors, and the critical factors limiting the wide-spread utilization of CO₂ electromethanogenesis. Various characterization and electrochemical testing methods for helping to uncover the underlying mechanisms in CO₂ electromethanogenesis have been introduced. In addition, future research needs for pushing forward the development of MECs technology in real-world CO₂ fixation and recycling were elaborated.

Biofouling of membranes in microbial electrochemical technologies: Causes, characterization methods and mitigation strategies

The scope of the review is to discuss the current state of knowledge and lessons learned on biofouling of membrane separators being used for microbial electrochemical technologies (MET). It is illustrated what crucial membrane features have to be considered and how these affect the MET performance, paying particular attention to membrane biofouling. The complexity of the phenomena was demonstrated and thereby, it is shown that membrane qualities related to its surface and inherent material features significantly influence (and can be influenced by) the biofouling process. Applicable methods for assessment of membrane biofouling are highlighted, followed by the detailed literature evaluation. Finally, an outlook on e.g. possible mitigation strategies for membrane biofouling in MET is provided.

Behavior of two-chamber microbial electrochemical systems started-up with different ion-exchange membrane separators

In this study, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) - operated with novel cation- and anion-exchange membranes, in particular AN-VPA 60 (CEM) and PSEBS DABCO (AEM) - were assessed comparatively with Nafion proton exchange membrane (PEM). The process characterization involved versatile electrochemical (polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy - EIS, cyclic voltammetry - CV) and biological (microbial structure analysis) methods in order to reveal the influence of membrane-type during start-up. In fact, the use of AEM led to 2-5 times higher energy yields than CEM and PEM and the lowest MFC internal resistance (148 ± 17 Ω) by the end of start-up. Regardless of the membrane-type, Geobacter was dominantly enriched on all anodes. Besides, CV and EIS measurements implied higher anode surface coverage of redox compounds for MFCs and lower membrane resistance with AEM, respectively. As a result, AEM based on PSEBS DABCO could be found as a promising material to substitute Nafion.

Effects of light intensity on biomass, carbohydrate and fatty acid compositions of three different mixed consortia from natural ecological water bodies

This study investigated the effect of light intensity on three various microalga consortia collected from natural ecological water bodies (named A, B and C) towards their fatty acid profiling and fractions, carbohydrate and protein production at different light intensities of 100, 200 and 300 μmol m^-2 s^-1. The results indicating that increasing light intensity positively correlated with the lipid production than carbohydrate and protein. Irrespective to the solids (Total and Volatile Solid) content, lipids and carbohydrate has varied significantly. Consortia C showed higher productivity toward lipids, whereas consortia A and B accumulated more carbohydrate and protein, respectively. The microscopic images revealed the breakdown of cells during the increase in light intensity, in spite, the similar algal species were observed in all consortia experimented. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that low light intensity aid relatively in high protein, Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus, meanwhile high intensity attributed carbohydrates and unsaturated fatty acids (USFA) contents.

A review of the innovative gas separation membrane bioreactor with mechanisms for integrated production and purification of biohydrogen

This review article focuses on an assessment of the innovative Gas Separation Membrane Bioreactor (GS-MBR), which is an emerging technology because of its potential for in-situ biohydrogen production and separation. The GS-MBR, as a special membrane bioreactor, enriches CO₂ directly from the headspace of the anaerobic H₂ fermentation process. CO₂ can be fed as a substrate to auxiliary photo-bioreactors to grow microalgae as a promising raw material for biocatalyzed, dark fermentative H₂-evolution. Overall, these features make the GS-MBR worthy of study. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the GS-MBR has not been studied in detail to date; hence, a comprehensive review of this topic will be useful to the scientific community.

Evaluation of gradual adaptation of mixed microalgae consortia cultivation using textile wastewater via fed batch operation

This study investigated mixed microalgae consortia cultivation in a fed batch reactor using textile wastewater. The results showed 95% of total phosphorus (TP) and 70% of total nitrogen (TN) depletion during the operational period. Algal biomass growth, pollutant removal, and biomass constituents were examined for five cycles of the fed batch operation. The length of the cycles decreased from 30 days to 10 days as the cycle repeated, which implied gradual adaptation of microalgae to textile wastewater. Color of textile wastewater was removed in the range of 68-72% in all the cycles experimented. Microbial algal cultivation with textile wastewater would be a feasible approach for remediation and resource recovery purpose.

Microbial electrohydrogenesis linked to dark fermentation as integrated application for enhanced biohydrogen production: A review on process characteristics, experiences and lessons

Microbial electrohydrogenesis cells (MECs) are devices that have attracted significant attention from the scientific community to generate hydrogen gas electrochemically with the aid of exoelectrogen microorganisms. It has been demonstrated that MECs are capable to deal with the residual organic materials present in effluents generated along with dark fermentative hydrogen bioproduction (DF). Consequently, MECs stand as attractive post-treatment units to enhance the global H₂ yield as a part of a two-stage, integrated application (DF-MEC). In this review article, it is aimed (i) to assess results communicated in the relevant literature on cascade DF-MEC systems, (ii) describe the characteristics of each steps involved and (iii) discuss the experiences as well as the lessons in order to facilitate knowledge transfer and help the interested readers with the construction of more efficient coupled set-ups, leading eventually to the improvement of overall biohydrogen evolution performances.

Improvement of methane content in a hydrogenotrophic anaerobic digester via the proper operation of membrane module integrated into an external-loop

This work assessed the feasibility of a hydrogenotrophic biogas process integrated with a membrane module in the external-loop design. The major scope was to conduct the investigation from the perspective of the membrane unit and reveal how the operating strategy influences the efficiency of biogas formation. It was observed that the fermenter worked with an improved efficacy, indicated by the higher concentration of methane in the headspace (80-90%) when the gas loading intensity, defined as the ratio of inlet gas permeation rate and the circulation rate of the liquid phase, was adjusted to lower values (3-5.3×10^-3). Such results are implying that the mass transfer of H₂ into the reactor is dependent on this critical parameter. Moreover, attention should be paid to the fouling of the module under longer-term experiments to keep its performance at a sufficient level.

A review on the biomass pretreatment and inhibitor removal methods as key-steps towards efficient macroalgae-based biohydrogen production

(Red, green and brown) macroalgal biomass is a propitious candidate towards covenant alternative energy resources to be converted into biofuels i.e. hydrogen. The application of macroalgae for hydrogen fermentation (promising route in advancing the biohydrogen generation process) could be accomplished by the transformation of carbohydrates, which is a topic receiving broad attention in recent years. This article overviews the variety of marine algal biomass available in the coastal system, followed by the analyses of their pretreatment methods, inhibitor formation and possible detoxification, which are key-aspects to achieve subsequent H₂ fermentation in a proper way.

Continuous micro-current stimulation to upgrade methanolic wastewater biodegradation and biomethane recovery in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor

The dispersion of granules in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor represents a critical technical issue in methanolic wastewater treatment. In this study, the potentials of coupling a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) into an UASB reactor for improving methanolic wastewater biodegradation, long-term process stability and biomethane recovery were evaluated. The results indicated that coupling a MEC system was capable of improving the overall performance of UASB reactor for methanolic wastewater treatment. The combined system maintained the comparatively higher methane yield and COD removal efficiency over the single UASB process through the entire process, with the methane production at the steady-state conditions approaching 1504.7 ± 92.2 mL-CH₄ L^-1-reactor d^-1, around 10.1% higher than the control UASB (i.e. 1366.4 ± 71.0 mL-CH₄ L^-1-reactor d^-1). The further characterizations verified that the input of external power source could stimulate the metabolic activity of microbes and reinforced the EPS secretion. The produced EPS interacted with Fe^2+/3+ liberated during anodic corrosion of iron electrode to create a gel-like three-dimensional [-Fe-EPS-]_n matrix, which promoted cell-cell cohesion and maintained the structural integrity of granules. Further observations via SEM and FISH analysis demonstrated that the use of bioelectrochemical stimulation promoted the growth and proliferation of microorganisms, which diversified the degradation routes of methanol, convert the wasted CO₂ into methane and accordingly increased the process stability and methane productivity.

Bioelectrochemical systems using microalgae - A concise research update

Excess consumption of energy by humans is compounded by environmental pollution, the greenhouse effect and climate change impacts. Current developments in the use of algae for bioenergy production offer several advantages. Algal biomass is hence considered a new bio-material which holds the promise to fulfil the rising demand for energy. Microalgae are used in effluents treatment, bioenergy production, high value added products synthesis and CO₂ capture. This review summarizes the potential applications of algae in bioelectrochemically mediated oxidation reactions in fully biotic microbial fuel cells for power generation and removal of unwanted nutrients. In addition, this review highlights the recent developments directed towards developing different types of microalgae MFCs. The different process factors affecting the performance of microalgae MFC system and some technological bottlenecks are also addressed.

Evaluation of various cheese whey treatment scenarios in single-chamber microbial electrolysis cells for improved biohydrogen production

In this study single-chamber microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) were applied to treat cheese whey (CW), an industrial by-product, and recover H₂ gas. Firstly, this substrate was fed directly to the MEC to get the initial feedback about its H₂ generation potential. The results indicated that the direct application of CW requires an adequate pH control to realize bioelectrohydrogenesis and avoid operational failure due to the loss of bioanode activity. In the second part of the study, the effluents of anaerobic (methanogenic) digester and hydrogenogenic (dark fermentative H₂-producing) reactor utilizing the CW were tested in the MEC process (representing the concept of a two-stage technology). It turned out that the residue of the methanogenic reactor - with its relatively lower carbohydrate- and higher volatile fatty acid contents - was more suitable to produce hydrogen bioelectrochemically. The MEC operated with the dark fermentation effluent, containing a high portion of carbohydrates and low amount of organic acids, produced significant amount of undesired methane simultaneously with H₂. Overall, the best MEC behavior was attained using the effluent of the methanogenic reactor and therefore, considering a two-stage system, methanogenesis is an advisable pretreatment step for the acidic CW to enhance the H₂ formation in complementary microbial electrohydrogenesis.

Performance evaluation of microbial electrochemical systems operated with Nafion and supported ionic liquid membranes

In this work, the performance of dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) constructed either with commonly used Nafion^® proton exchange membrane or supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) was assessed. The behavior of MFCs was followed and analyzed by taking the polarization curves and besides, their efficiency was characterized by measuring the electricity generation using various substrates such as acetate and glucose. By using the SILMs containing either [C₆mim][PF₆] or [Bmim][NTf₂] ionic liquids, the energy production of these MFCs from glucose was comparable to that obtained with the MFC employing polymeric Nafion^® and the same substrate. Furthermore, the MFC operated with [Bmim][NTf₂]-based SILM demonstrated higher energy yield in case of low acetate loading (80.1 J g^-1 COD_in m^-2 h^-1) than the one with the polymeric Nafion^® N115 (59 J g^-1 COD_in m^-2 h^-1). Significant difference was observed between the two SILM-MFCs, however, the characteristics of the system was similar based on the cell polarization measurements. The results suggest that membrane-engineering applying ionic liquids can be an interesting subject field for bioelectrochemical system research.

Enzyme kinetics approach to assess biocatalyst inhibition and deactivation caused by [bmim][Cl] ionic liquid during cellulose hydrolysis

The aim of this work was to study the inhibition and deactivation of commercial enzyme cocktail (Cellic® Htec2) in the presence of [bmim][Cl] ionic liquid employing model cellulosic substrate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). It turned out from the experiments - relying on enzyme kinetics approach - that [bmim][Cl] could act as a competitive inhibitor. Furthermore, depending on the process conditions i.e. contact of enzyme solution with high concentration [bmim][Cl], severe biocatalyst inactivation should be also taken into account as a potential risk during the enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis even in as short process times as few minutes.

H2 production in membraneless bioelectrochemical cells with optimized architecture: The effect of cathode surface area and electrode distance

In this work we report on the hydrogen production capacity of single-chamber microbial electrohydrogenesis cell (MEC) with optimized design characteristics, in particular cathode surface area and anode-cathode spacing using acetate as substrate. The results showed that the maximal H₂ production rates and best energetic performances could be obtained using the smallest, 71 cm² stainless steel cathode and 4 cm electrode distances, employing a 60 cm² bioanode. Cyclic voltammetric analysis was employed to investigate the dominant electron transfer mechanism of the architecturally optimized system.

Municipal waste liquor treatment via bioelectrochemical and fermentation (H2 + CH4) processes: Assessment of various technological sequences

In this paper, the anaerobic treatment of a high organic-strength wastewater-type feedstock, referred as the liquid fraction of pressed municipal solid waste (LPW) was studied for energy recovery and organic matter removal. The processes investigated were (i) dark fermentation to produce biohydrogen, (ii) anaerobic digestion for biogas formation and (iii) microbial fuel cells for electrical energy generation. To find a feasible alternative for LPW treatment (meeting the two-fold aims given above), various one- as well as multi-stage processes were tested. The applications were evaluated based on their (i) COD removal efficiencies and (ii) specific energy gain. As a result, considering the former aspect, the single-stage processes could be ranked as: microbial fuel cell (92.4%)> anaerobic digestion (50.2%)> hydrogen fermentation (8.8%). From the latter standpoint, an order of hydrogen fermentation (2277 J g^-1 COD_removed d^-1)> anaerobic digestion (205 J g^-1 COD_removed d^-1)> microbial fuel cell (0.43 J g^-1 COD_removed d^-1) was attained. The assessment showed that combined, multi-step treatment was necessary to simultaneously achieve efficient organic matter removal and energy recovery from LPW. Therefore, a three-stage system (hydrogen fermentation-biomethanation-bioelectrochemical cell in sequence) was suggested. The different approaches were characterized via the estimation of COD balance, as well.

Effects of anti-foaming agents on biohydrogen production

The effects of antifoaming agents on fermentative hydrogen production using galactose in batch and continuous operations were investigated. Batch hydrogen production assays with LS-303 (dimethylpolysiloxane), LG-109 (polyalkylene), LG-126 (polyoxyethylenealkylene), and LG-299 (polyether) showed that the doses and types of antifoaming agents played a significant role in hydrogen production. During batch tests, LS-303 at 100μL/L resulted in the maximum hydrogen production rate (HPR) and hydrogen yield (HY) of 2.5L/L-d and 1.08mol H2/mol galactoseadded, respectively. The following continuously stirred tank reactor operated at 12h HRT with LS-303 at 100μL/L showed a stable HPR and HY of 4.9L/L-d and 1.17mol H2/mol galactoseadded, respectively, which were higher than those found for the control reactor. Microbial community analysis supported the alterations in H2 generation under different operating conditions and the stimulatory impact of certain antifoaming chemicals on H2 production was demonstrated.

Fermentative hydrogen production in anaerobic membrane bioreactors: A review

Reactor design considerations are crucial aspects of dark fermentative hydrogen production. During the last decades, many types of reactors have been developed and used in order to drive biohydrogen technology towards practicality and economical-feasibility. In general, the ultimate aim is to improve the key features of the process, namely the H2 yields and generation rates. Among the various configurations, the traditional, completely stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) are still the most routinely employed ones. However, due to their limitations, there is a progress to develop more reliable alternatives. One of the research directions points to systems combining membranes, which are called as anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). The aim of this paper is to summarize and highlight the recent biohydrogen related work done on AnMBRs and moreover to evaluate their performances and potentials in comparison with their conventional CSTR counterparts.

Comparative study of various E. coli strains for biohydrogen production applying response surface methodology

The proper strategy to establish efficient hydrogen-producing biosystems is the biochemical, physiological characterization of hydrogen-producing microbes followed by metabolic engineering in order to give extraordinary properties to the strains and, finally, bioprocess optimization to realize enhanced hydrogen fermentation capability. In present paper, it was aimed to show the utility both of strain engineering and process optimization through a comparative study of wild-type and genetically modified E. coli strains, where the effect of two major operational factors (substrate concentration and pH) on bioH₂ production was investigated by experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine the suitable conditions in order to obtain maximum yields. The results revealed that by employing the genetically engineered E. coli (DJT 135) strain under optimized conditions (pH: 6.5; Formate conc.: 1.25 g/L), 0.63 mol H₂/mol formate could be attained, which was 1.5 times higher compared to the wild-type E. coli (XL1-BLUE) that produced 0.42 mol H₂/mol formate (pH: 6.4; Formate conc.: 1.3 g/L).
