Abstract
Brain states such as sleep, anesthesia, wakefulness, or coma are characterized by specific patterns of cortical activity dynamics, from local circuits to full-brain emergent properties. We previously demonstrated that full-spectrum signals, including the infraslow component (DC, direct current-coupled), can be recorded acutely in multiple sites using flexible arrays of graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (gSGFETs). Here, we performed chronic implantation of 16-channel gSGFET arrays over the rat cerebral cortex and recorded full-band neuronal activity with two objectives: (1) to test the long-term stability of implanted devices; and (2) to investigate full-band activity during the transition across different levels of anesthesia. First, we demonstrate it is possible to record full-band signals with stability, fidelity, and spatiotemporal resolution for up to 5.5 months using chronic epicortical gSGFET implants. Second, brain states generated by progressive variation of levels of anesthesia could be identified as traditionally using the high-pass filtered (AC, alternating current-coupled) spectrogram: from synchronous slow oscillations in deep anesthesia through to asynchronous activity in the awake state. However, the DC signal introduced a highly significant improvement for brain-state discrimination: the DC band provided an almost linear information prediction of the depth of anesthesia, with about 85% precision, using a trained algorithm. This prediction rose to about 95% precision when the full-band (AC + DC) spectrogram was taken into account. We conclude that recording infraslow activity using gSGFET interfaces is superior for the identification of brain states, and further supports the preclinical and clinical use of graphene neural interfaces for long-term recordings of cortical activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study, conducted by a working group of the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM), was to define typical z-resolution values for different digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) models to be used as a reference for quality control (QC). Currently, there are no typical values published in internationally agreed QC protocols. METHODS To characterize the z-resolution of the DBT models, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the artifact spread function (ASF), a technical parameter that quantifies the signal intensity of a detail along reconstructed planes, was analyzed. Five different commercial phantoms, CIRS Model 011, CIRS Model 015, Modular DBT phantom, Pixmam 3-D, and Tomophan, were evaluated on reconstructed DBT images and 82 DBT systems (6 vendors, 9 models) in use at 39 centers in Italy were involved. RESULTS The ASF was found to be dependent on the detail size, the DBT angular acquisition range, the reconstruction algorithm and applied image processing. In particular, a progressively greater signal spread was observed as the detail size increased and the acquisition angle decreased. However, a clear correlation between signal spread and angular range width was not observed due to the different signal reconstruction and image processing strategies implemented in the algorithms developed by the vendors studied. CONCLUSIONS The analysis led to the identification of typical z-resolution values for different DBT model-phantom configurations that could be used as a reference during a QC program.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The inclusion of dexmedetomidine (DEX) within a balanced general anaesthesia protocol is effective in improving the clinical outcome and recovery quality of anaesthesia in horses. This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetic profile of DEX following repeated subcutaneous (SC) administration at 2 µg/kg every 60 min till the end of the procedure in comparison to intravenous constant rate infusion (CRI) at 1 µg/kg/h in anaesthetized horses undergoing diagnostic procedures up to the end of the diagnostic procedure. RESULTS In the CRI and SC groups DEX maximum concentrations (Cmax) were 0.83 ± 0.27 ng/mL and 1.14 ± 0.71 ng/mL, respectively, reached at a time (Tmax) of 57.0 ± 13.4 min and 105.5 ± 29.9 min. Mean residence time to the last measurable concentration (MRTlast) was 11.7 ± 6.2 and 55.8 ± 19.7 min for the CRI group and SC groups, respectively. The apparent elimination half-life was 18.0 ± 10.0 min in the CRI group and 94.8 ± 69.8 min for the SC group, whereas the area under the curve (AUC0-last) resulted 67.7 ± 29.3 and 83.2 ± 60.5 min*ng/mL for CRI and SC group, respectively. Clearance was 16.26 ± 8.07 mL/min/kg for the CRI group. No signs of adverse effects were recorded in both groups. CONCLUSIONS The pharmacokinetic profile of DEX following repeated SC administration in anaesthetized horses was comparable to intravenous CRI administration during the intranaesthetic period and beneficial during the recovery phase from general anaesthesia. The SC route could be considered as an alternative to CRI for improving the recovery quality of equine patients undergoing general anaesthesia.

Abstract
There is an increasing demand on alternatives methods to animal testing. Numerous health parameters have been already studied using in vitro devices able to mimic the essential functions of the organs, being the real-time monitoring and response to stimuli their main limitations. Regarding the health of the gut, the short chain fatty acids, and particularly acetate, have emerged as key biomarkers to evaluate gut healthiness and disease development, although the number of acetate biosensors is still very low. This article presents a microbial biosensor based on fully biocompatible materials which is able to detect acetate in aerobic conditions in the range between 11 and 50 mM, and without compromising the viability and function of either bacteria (>90% viability) or mammalian cells (>80% viability). The detection mechanism is based on the metabolism of acetate by Escherichia coli bacteria immobilized on the transducer surface. Ferricyanide is used as a redox mediator to transfer electrons from the acetate metabolism in the bacterial cells to the transducer. High bacterial concentrations are immobilized in the transducer surface (109 cfu mL-1) by electrodeposition of conductive alginate hydrogels doped with reduced graphene oxide. The results show successful outcomes to exploit bacteria as a biosensing tool, based on the use of inkjet printed transducers, biocompatible materials and cell entrapment technologies.

Abstract
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug, which presents an established clinical efficacy in human patients for the management of refractory partial seizures, secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and for the control of chronic neuropathic pain. Gabapentin was synthesized as a structural analogue of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, with GABA-mimetic effects, able to cross the blood-brain barrier. In veterinary medicine, is extra-label used in combination with other treatments to control seizures when other drugs are no longer effective or become toxic or for neuropathic pain treatment and anxiety. This review aimed to clarify gabapentin use and pharmacokinetic aspects to promote conscious use in dogs, cats, and horses. In dogs, gabapentin was beneficial in the treatment of epilepsy, as well as chronic, neuropathic, and post-operative pain, as well as anxiety. In cats, it showed efficacy in post-ovariohysterectomy-related pain and in anxiety management. In horses, gabapentin has been administered as an analgesic for chronic pain management. In conclusion, when used in combination with other drugs, gabapentin can be considered an interesting therapeutic option for the treatment of neuropathic diseases and analgesia in postoperative and chronic pain. However, despite its beneficial use in different clinical settings, further trials and pharmacokinetic studies are needed for the definition of an effective dosage regimen through proper pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic correlation in dogs, cats, and horses.

Abstract
Background The study determines the pharmacokinetic profiles of dexmedetomidine (DEX), ketamine (KET) and its active metabolite, norketamine (NORKET), after simultaneous administration. Moreover, the study evaluates the sedative effects of this protocol, its influence on the main physiological variables and the occurrence of adverse effects. Methods Eighteen captive tigers were initially administered with a mixture of DEX (10 µg/kg) and KET (2 mg/kg) by remote intramuscular injection. In case of individual and specific needs, the protocol was modified and tigers could receive general anaesthesia, propofol or additional doses of DEX and KET. Results Based on the immobilisation protocol, nine animals were assigned to the standard protocol group and the other nine to the non-standard protocol group. Higher area under the first moment curve (AUMC0-last) and longer mean residence time (MRT0-last) (P<0.05) were observed in the non-standard protocol group for DEX, KET and NORKET, and higher area under the concentration-time curve from administration to the last measurable concentration (AUC0-last) only for KET. The KET metabolisation rate was similar (P=0.296) between groups. No differences between groups were detected in terms of stages of sedation and recoveries. All physiological variables remained within normality ranges during the whole observation period. During the hospitalisation period, no severe adverse reactions and signs of resedation were observed. Conclusion The simultaneous administration of 10 µg/kg of DEX and 2 mg/kg of KET can be considered an effective protocol for chemical immobilisation of captive tigers, along with dosage adjusments or when other drugs are needed.

Abstract
Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of Bonvital® for laying hens. Bonvital® is an additive containing viable cells of Enterococcus faecium DSM 7134 marketed in two forms, a granular and a powder form, both with a guaranteed minimum concentration of E. faecium DSM 7134 of 1.0 × 1010 colony forming units (CFU)/g additive. Bonvital® in either form is intended for use in feed for laying hens at the minimum concentration of 1.0 × 109 CFU/kg complete feed and at the maximum concentration of 1.0 × 1010 CFU/kg feedingstuffs. Bonvital powder® is also proposed for use in water for drinking at the minimum concentration of 5.0 × 108 CFU/L. The use of Bonvital® in animal nutrition is considered safe for the target animals. The results of a tolerance trial in which hens were fed the additive at 10-fold the maximum recommended dose support this conclusion. Delivery of comparable doses of the additive via water for drinking is considered as safe for laying hens. Bonvital® at the proposed conditions of use is safe for consumers of products derived from animals fed the additive and for the environment. Bonvital® is not a dermal or ocular irritant but a potential dermal and respiratory sensitiser. Bonvital® has the potential to be efficacious in improving the hen's performance when supplemented at 1.0 × 109 CFU/kg feed or 5.0 × 108 CFU/L water for drinking.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cri-du-Chat Syndrome (CdCS) is a genetic condition due to deletions showing different breakpoints encompassing a critical region on the short arm of chromosome 5, located between p15.2 and p15.3, first defined by Niebuhr in 1978. The classic phenotype includes a characteristic cry, peculiar facies, microcephaly, growth retardation, hypotonia, speech and psychomotor delay and intellectual disability. A wide spectrum of clinical manifestations can be attributed to differences in size and localization of the 5p deletion. Several critical regions related to some of the main features (such as cry, peculiar facies, developmental delay) have been identified. The aim of this study is to further define the genotype-phenotype correlations in CdCS with particular regards to the specific neuroradiological findings. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fourteen patients with 5p deletions have been included in the present study. Neuroimaging studies were conducted using brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Genetic testing was performed by means of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) array at 130 kb resolution. RESULTS MRI analyses showed that isolated pontine hypoplasia is the most common finding, followed by vermian hypoplasia, ventricular anomalies, abnormal basal angle, widening of cavum sellae, increased signal of white matter, corpus callosum anomalies, and anomalies of cortical development. Chromosomal microarray analysis identified deletions ranging in size from 11,6 to 33,8 Mb on the short arm of chromosome 5. Then, we took into consideration the overlapping and non-overlapping deleted regions. The goal was to establish a correlation between the deleted segments and the neuroradiological features of our patients. CONCLUSIONS Performing MRI on all the patients in our cohort, allowed us to expand the neuroradiological phenotype in CdCS. Moreover, possible critical regions associated to characteristic MRI findings have been identified.

Abstract
Commercial kitchen wastewaters are typically strong organic and fat-rich effluents, often identified as major contributors to fatberg formation and associated blockages in sewers. Experimental trials were done using synthetic kitchen wastewater to understand the complex reactions involved in microbial remediation in grease traps/separators prior discharge in sewers. The principle organic components (FOG, carbohydrate and protein nitrogen), were varied using ranges observed in a previous study on real kitchen wastewater characterisation. A model bacterium, Bacillus licheniformis NCIMB 9375, was used to evaluate microbial utilisation of the different organic fractions in relation to fat, oil and grease (FOG) degradation. Novel results in the treatment of these effluents showed that, the presence and concentration of alternative carbon sources and the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (COD:N) had great influence on FOG-degradation response. For example, FOG removal decreased from 24 to 10 mg/l/h when glucose was substitute for starch at equivalent concentrations (500 mg/l); and from 26 to 5 mg/l/h when initial COD:N increased from 45:1 to 147:1. The dominant influence of COD:N was validated using a commercial bioadditive and real kitchen wastewater adjusted to different COD:N ratios, confirming the strong influence of kitchen wastewater composition on bioremediation outcomes. These results can therefore have major implications for biological management of FOG in kitchens and sewers as they provide a scientific explanation for bioremediation success or failure.

Abstract
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of Levucell®SC when used in feed for calves and minor ruminant species and camelids at the same developmental stage. The additive consists of viable cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This species is considered by EFSA to be suitable for the Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) approach to safety assessment. This approach requires the identity of the strain to be conclusively established. The strain was found to meet the criteria for the QPS approach in the context of previous opinions and since concerns are not expected from other components of the additive, Levucell®SC is presumed safe for all target species, consumers of products derived from animals fed the additive and for the environment. The Panel considers these conclusions to apply also in the current assessment. In a previous opinion, the Panel also concluded that the additive is considered an eye irritant but not a dermal irritant or sensitiser and that inhalation exposure is unlikely. Since the use of the additive in calves and minor ruminant species and camelids at the same developmental stage is considered unlikely to introduce hazards for users of the product not already considered as part of the first assessment, these conclusions are still considered valid. Levucell SC® has the potential to be efficacious in calves at the minimum inclusion level of 1 × 109CFU/kg complete feed. The conclusion on efficacy for calves can be extrapolated to minor ruminant species and camelids at the same developmental stage.

Abstract
Pesticide losses from agricultural land to water can result in the environmental deterioration of receiving systems. Mathematical models can make important contributions to risk assessments and catchment management. However, some mechanistic models have high parameter requirements which can make them difficult to apply in data poor areas. In addition, uncertainties in pesticide properties and applications are difficult to account for using models with long run-times. Alternative, simpler, conceptual models are easier to apply and can still be used as a framework for process interpretation. Here, we present a new conceptual model of pesticide behaviour in surface water catchments, based on continuous water balance calculations. Pesticide losses to surface waters are calculated based on the displacement of a limited fraction of the soil pore water during storm events occurring after application. The model was used to describe the behaviour of metaldehyde in a small (2.2 km2) under-drained catchment in Eastern England. Metaldehyde is a molluscicide which has been regularly detected at high concentrations in many drinking water supply catchments. Measured peak concentrations in stream water (to about 9 μg L-1) occurred in the first few storm events after application in mid-August. In each event, there was a quasi-exponential decrease in concentration during hydrograph recession. Peak concentrations decreased in successive events - responding to rainfall but reflecting an effective exhaustion in soil supply due to degradation and dissipation. Uncertain pesticide applications to the catchment were estimated using land cover analysis of satellite data, combined with a Poisson distribution to describe the timing of application. Model performance for both the hydrograph (after calibration of the water balance) and the chemograph was good and could be improved via some minor adjustments in assumptions which yield general insights into the drivers for pesticide transport. The use of remote sensing offers some promising opportunities for estimating catchment-scale pesticide applications and associated losses.

Abstract
Essential for the selection of a reliable treatment system is the characterisation of the effluent to treat. Kitchen wastewater (KWW) from food service establishments (FSEs) is a strong organic and fat-rich effluent whose characterisation has not been sufficiently addressed. KWW composition is highly variable and linked to the FSE's size, the type of meals prepared and the amount of water used during the cleaning. COD, TSS and fat content (FOG) are the most common parameters found in literature. However, other physical and chemical parameters (e.g. temperature, pH, oil droplets characteristics and trace elements), correlated to commercial kitchen cleaning practices rather than the specific effluent, but equally influential on the treatment efficiencies of both physical and biological methods, have hardly been investigated. A comprehensive characterisation of wastewaters from three food service establishments was used to generate data to support the selection of appropriate FOG mitigation methods. Two novel analytical methods were used to quantify the proportion of emulsified FOG and associated droplet size from different kitchen washing effluents. The results showed that more than 90% of the FOG from the dishwasher effluent and around 35% of sink one was emulsified, with droplet sizes less than 100 μm, well below the removal capabilities of conventional grease interceptors, but easily removed using biological means. From the WW composition results, a formula for predictive modelling was derived to represent average organic matter composition for kitchen wastewater as C20H38O10N, applicable in remediation processes. These results offer a good starting point for the design, operation, and optimisation of wastewater treatment systems of oil-rich KWW.

Abstract
ECONASE®XT is an enzyme based on endo‐1,4‐β‐xylanase produced by a genetically modified strain of Trichoderma reesei ■■■■■. The additive is currently authorised for use in chickens for fattening or reared for laying, turkeys for fattening or reared for breeding, laying hens, weaned piglets, pigs for fattening and minor poultry species. This scientific opinion concerns the renewal of the authorisation of the additive when used in weaned piglets, chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying, turkeys for fattening and turkeys reared for breeding. ECONASE®XT is currently authorised in two forms, a solid and a liquid form with activities of 4,000,000 and 400,000 BXU/g, respectively. The current application also comprises three new less concentrated formulations. The applicant has provided evidence that the additive currently in the market complies with the existing conditions of authorisation. The Panel could not exclude the potential presence of recombinant DNA derived from the production organism in recent batches. However, since no sequences of concern have been introduced in the production strain, the potential presence of recombinant DNA in the final product does not raise any safety concern. No new evidence has been produced that would lead the Panel to reconsider its previous conclusions on the safety of the product for target species, consumers, users and the environment under the authorised conditions of use. Therefore, the FEEDAP Panel confirms that ECONASE®XT is safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. ECONASE®XT is non‐irritant to the skin, the liquid form is non‐irritant to the eyes and is not a dermal sensitiser, but the additive in all forms should be considered a potential respiratory sensitiser. There is no need for assessing the efficacy of the additive in the context of the renewal of the authorisation.

Abstract
Food safety becomes imperative when it aims to protect infants. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of emerging contaminants of which some act as endocrine-disruptors in baby food. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), parabens and antibiotics were analysed in 112 baby food of different categories (meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, cheese). As regard POPs, PFASs and antibiotics, no residues were detected, while one sample showed methyl-paraben (4.14 ng g-1), whereas another three contained propyl-paraben (median 1.70 ng g-1). Special attention must be paid on parabens metabolites, as 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, the principal parabens metabolite, was detected in all samples (median 176.7 ng g-1). It may be present as a degradation product, but also, it can be released from vegetables and fruits during food processing. It is recommended to collect more data on natural vs non-natural occurrence of parabens and metabolites to evaluate the exposure of sensitive population vs ADI published by the European Food Safety Authority and European Medicines Agency.

Abstract
This study aimed to define the pharmacokinetic profiles of dexmedetomidine and methadone administered simultaneously in dogs by either an oral transmucosal route or intramuscular route and to determine the bioavailability of the oral transmucosal administration relative to the intramuscular one of both drugs, so as the applicability of this administration route in dogs. Twelve client-owned dogs, scheduled for diagnostic procedures, were treated with a combination of dexmedetomidine hydrochloride (10 μg/kg) and methadone hydrochloride (0.4 mg/kg) through an oral transmucosal route or intramuscularly. Oral transmucosal administration caused ptyalism in most subjects, and intramuscular administration caused transient peripheral vasoconstriction. The results showed reduced and delayed absorption of both dexmedetomidine and methadone when administered through an oral transmucosal route, with median (range) Cmax values of 0.82 (0.42-1.49) ng/ml and 13.22 (2.80-52.30) ng/ml, respectively. The relative bioavailability was low: 16.34% (dexmedetomidine) and 15.5% (methadone). Intramuscular administration resulted in a more efficient absorption profile, with AUC and Cmax values for both drugs approximately 10 times higher. Dexmedetomidine and methadone administered simultaneously by an oral transmucosal route using injectable formulations were not well absorbed through the oral mucosa. Nevertheless, additional studies on these drugs combination using alternative administration routes are recommended.

Abstract
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil from the seeds of Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton when used as a sensory additive for all animal species. Characterisation of the essential oil identified 37 components accounting for > 99% of its composition, with terpineol acetate (> 35%) and 1,8-cineole (> 20%) being the most prevalent compounds. In the absence of toxicological data of the feed additive itself, a component-based approach was applied to assess the safety of the essential oil as a mixture. Based on structural and metabolic similarity, the components of cardamom oil were allocated to seven assessment groups. Assuming the absence of toxicologically relevant interactions among components, dose addition was applied within each assessment group by calculating the combined margin of exposure as a basis for risk characterisation. The FEEDAP Panel concluded that the additive under assessment is safe at the proposed use level of 5 mg/kg in feed for all animal species. A concentration of 5 mg/L water for drinking is considered safe for all animal species. The use of cardamom essential oil in animal feed is considered safe for the consumer. In the absence of studies, the Panel cannot conclude on the safety for the users when handling the additive. The use of the essential oil under assessment in animal production is not expected to pose a risk for the environment. Since the seeds of E. cardamomum and their preparations are recognised to flavour food and their function in feed would be essentially the same, no further demonstration of efficacy is considered necessary. The Panel made a recommendation to limit the content of methyleugenol in the oil.

Abstract
Natuphos® is a feed additive that contains 3-phytase which is produced ■■■■■ The product is currently authorised for use as a feed additive in chickens for fattening, piglets (weaned) and pigs for fattening, laying hens and turkeys for fattening, ducks, sows, all minor avian species other than ducks and ornamental birds. This scientific opinion concerns the renewal of the authorisation of this additive for those species. The application also included chickens reared for laying/breeding, turkeys reared for breeding and breeding hens. The applicant provided evidence that the additive in the market complies with the conditions of authorisation. According to the information provided by the applicant, no new evidence has been identified that would make the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) reconsider the previous conclusions regarding the safety for the target species, consumer and environment under the authorised conditions of use. The additive is a respiratory sensitiser and a potential skin sensitiser. The present application for renewal of the authorisation does not include a proposal for amending or supplementing the conditions of the original authorisation that would have an impact on the efficacy of the additive. Therefore, there was no need for assessing the efficacy of the additive in for those species for which an authorisation exists. The Panel also considered that the additive is safe and has a potential to be efficacious in chickens reared for laying/breeding, turkeys reared for breeding, breeding hens and suckling piglets at the corresponding recommended doses.

Abstract
The additive contains viable spores of two strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and a single strain of Bacillus subtilis and is intended to be used with pigs for fattening and minor porcine species at a minimum inclusion level of 1.5 × 108 colony forming units (CFU)/kg complete feedingstuffs. The two bacterial species are considered suitable for the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach to safety assessment, which requires the identity of the strains to be established and evidence that they lack toxigenic potential and acquired antimicrobial resistance determinants for antibiotics of human and veterinary importance. The identity of the three active agents is established and the lack of toxigenic potential confirmed. The two B. amyloliquefaciens strains do not show resistance to relevant antibiotics, and are presumed safe for the target species, consumers and the environment. The B. subtilis strain showed a low level of resistance to streptomycin, for which acquired resistance genes were not identified. Therefore, it also complies with the QPS qualifications and is presumed safe for the target species, consumer and the environment. Since no other component give rise to concerns, Cinergy® Life B3 HiCon is also considered safe for the target species, consumers and the environment. In the absence of data, no conclusions can be made on the skin or eye irritancy or the potential for dermal sensitisation of the additive. Owing to the proteinaceous nature of the active agents, the additive is considered a potential respiratory sensitiser. However, the low dusting potential makes it unlikely that additive poses a risk for the respiratory system. Cinergy® Life B3 HiCon showed a potential to improve the feed to gain ratio in pigs for fattening given the additive at a minimum inclusion level of 1.5 × 108 CFU/kg complete feed. This conclusion is extrapolated to minor porcine species at the same application rate and for an equivalent growth phase.

Abstract
Bonvital® is the trade name for a feed additive based on Enterococcus faecium DSM 7134 currently authorised for use in piglets, pigs for fattening, sows, chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying and minor poultry species. This opinion concerns the renewal of the authorisation of Bonvital® as a zootechnical additive for weaned piglets and pigs for fattening. The applicant is proposing to increase the minimum and maximum inclusion level of the additive in feed for weaned piglets and the maximum for pigs for fattening. The applicant has provided data demonstrating that the additive currently in the market complies with the conditions of authorisation. E. faecium DSM 7134 does not belong to the hospital‐associated clade and does not express resistance to the antibiotics tested; therefore, its use in animal nutrition is considered safe for the target animals and consumers of animal products. Bonvital® is also considered safe for the target animals and consumers. In previous opinions, Bonvital® was found to be non‐irritant to skin and eyes, but a potential skin/respiratory sensitiser and safe for the environment. No new evidence has been identified that would make the Panel reconsider the previous conclusions on the safety of the additive. The conclusions reached before are considered to cover the higher maximum application rates proposed by the applicant. Therefore, the Panel concludes that Bonvital® used under the proposed conditions of use is safe for weaned piglets and pigs for fattening, consumers of products derived from animals fed Bonvital® and the environment. Bonvital® is considered a potential skin/respiratory sensitiser. The additional studies provided confirm that Bonvital® has the potential to be efficacious in weaned piglets at 1 × 109 colony forming unit (CFU)/kg feed and in pigs for fattening at 2 × 108 CFU/kg feed.

Abstract
A mixture of methylated conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers (t10,c12 and c9,t11) in equal proportions is the subject of this assessment. The active substance is considered to be CLA (t10,c12) methyl ester (ME). The Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) of EFSA previously issued an opinion on the safety and efficacy of the product, in which it could not conclude on the efficacy of this additive for sows for reproduction and for cows for reproduction. The European Commission asked EFSA to deliver an opinion on the efficacy of this additive for sows and cows for reproduction, based on additional data submitted by the applicant. The FEEDAP Panel has performed the assessment of the new data following an approach in line with the principles laid down in Regulation (EC) No 429/2008 and the relevant guidance documents. In relation to the data on efficacy in sows for reproduction, owing to methodological shortcomings of the study submitted, including the duration of the study and the limited biological relevance of the effect observed, the FEEDAP Panel cannot conclude on the efficacy of CLA (t10,c12)-ME for sows for reproduction. The data related to dairy cows indicate that dietary CLA (t10,c12)-ME supplementation in the late dry period and/or lactation period showed an increase of the probability of pregnancy and a reduction of time to conception in the same reproductive cycle. However, considering that the minimum duration of efficacy studies for reproductive parameters is of at least two reproductive cycles, the FEEDAP Panel is not in a position to conclude on the efficacy of the additive for cows for reproduction.

Abstract
We demonstrate an integrated optical pressure sensing platform for multiplexed optofluidics applications. The sensing platform consists in an array of elastomeric on-side nanostructured membranes -effectively 2D photonic crystal- which present colour shifts in response to mechanical stress that alter their nanostructure characteristical dimensions, pitch or orientation. The photonic membranes are prepared by a simple and cost-effective method based on the infiltration of a 2D colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) with PDMS and their integration with a microfluidic system. We explore the changes in the white light diffraction produced by the nanostructured membranes when varying the pneumatic pressure in the microfluidics channels as a way to achieve a power-free array of pressure sensors that change their reflective colour depending on the bending produced on each sensor. The structural characterization of these membranes was performed by SEM, while the optical properties and the pressure-colour relation were evaluated via UV-Vis reflection spectrometry. Maximum sensitivities of 0.17 kPa-1 is obtained when measuring at Littrow configuration (θin = -θout), and close to the border of the membranes. The reflected colour change with pressure is as well monitorized by using a smartphone camera.

Levucell®SB is the trade name for a feed additive based on viable cells of a strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae currently authorised as a zootechnical additive for weaned piglets, sows, chickens for fattening and minor poultry species for fattening. The applicant is now seeking authorisation as a zootechnical additive for use with all pigs. In the context of a previous opinion, the identity of the strain was confirmed, and according to the Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) approach to safety assessment, it was presumed safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. Since no concerns are expected from other components of the additive, Levucell® SB is also considered safe for the target species, including all pigs, consumers and the environment. Levucell® is not a skin or eye irritant or a skin sensitiser. Inhalation exposure is unlikely. Encapsulation used in the existing coated forms is not expected to introduce hazards for users. In previous opinions, Levucell®SB was found to have the potential to be efficacious in sows and weaned piglets at the dose of 1 × 109 colony forming units (CFU)/kg complete feedingstuffs. Since the dose proposed for use with all pigs is the same as that demonstrated to be effective in weaned piglets and sows, and it can be reasonably assumed that the mode of action is the same, the conclusion on efficacy for weaned piglets and sows can be extrapolated to all pigs. Therefore, the FEEDAP Panel concludes that Levucell® SB has the potential to be efficacious in all pigs at 1 × 109 CFU/kg feedingstuffs.

Abstract
The coccidiostat Monimax® (monensin sodium and nicarbazin) is considered safe for chickens for fattening and chickens reared for laying at the highest use level of 50 mg monensin and 50 mg nicarbazin/kg complete feed. This conclusion is extended to chickens reared for laying. For both active substances, the metabolic pathways in the chicken are similar to those in the turkey and rat. Nicarbazin, when ingested, is rapidly split in its two components dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine (HDP) which behave independently. Monimax® does not represent a genotoxic risk. No safety concerns would arise from the nicarbazin impurities p-nitroaniline and methyl(4-nitrophenyl) carbamate. The lowest no observed effect level (NOEL) identified for monensin sodium in a developmental study in rabbits is 0.3 mg monensin sodium/kg body weight (bw) per day for maternal toxicity in rabbits. The lowest no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) identified in a 52-week study in rat using DNC + HDP was 20 mg DNC + 8 mg HDP/kg bw per day based on the absence of microcrystals in urine and related microscopic renal observations. No significant interaction between monensin sodium and nicarbazin is expected from toxicological studies. The use of Monimax® at the highest proposed dose will not pose a risk to persons consuming animal products from treated chickens for fattening. This conclusion is extended to chickens reared for laying. No withdrawal time is required for Monimax® in chickens for fattening. Residue data comply with the established maximum residue limits (MRLs) for monensin and DNC. Based on the available data, the FEEDAP Panel cannot conclude on the safety of Monimax® for the environment. Monimax® has the potential to control coccidiosis in chickens for fattening at a minimum concentration of 40 mg monensin and 40 mg nicarbazin/kg complete feed.

Abstract
Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of a strain of Lactobacillus hilgardii and of Lactobacillus buchneri when used as a technological additive intended to improve ensiling at a proposed application rate of 3.0 x 108 colony forming units (CFU)/kg fresh material. The two bacterial species are considered by EFSA to be suitable for the qualified presumption of safety approach to safety assessment. In previous opinions the identity of the strains has been clearly established and no antibiotic resistance of concern was detected. Therefore, the use of the strains as a silage additive is considered safe for livestock species, for consumers of products from animals fed the treated silage and for the environment. In the absence of data, no conclusion can be drawn on the skin and eye irritancy or skin sensitisation of the additive. The additive should be considered a potential respiratory sensitiser. In a previous application, three studies involving both strains used in combination at the same concentration were made with samples of whole crop maize with varied dry matter content. The same studies have been submitted in this application. The Panel reiterates its previous conclusions that Lactobacillus hilgardii CNCM I-4785 and Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788/CNCM I-4323 at 1.5 × 108 CFU of each active agent per kg of fresh forage, equivalent to 3 x 108 CFU total lactobacilli/kg of forage significantly improve the aerobic stability of the silage.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the population pharmacokinetic (Pop PK) parameters of cefazolin administered prophylactically at 25 mg/kg intravenously (IV) 30 min before surgery in a canine population of 78 dogs and assess whether covariates, such as sex, age, body weight (BW), breed, health status, creatinine level, and surgery time, have an influence on cefazolin disposition. The ultimate goal was to compute PK/PD cut off values and subsequently establish a specific clinical breakpoint (CBP) for the development of an antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) of cefazolin in dogs according to the VetCAST approach. Two to 11 blood samples were collected from each dog from 5 to 480 min after cefazolin administration. A two-compartment model was selected, and parameterization was in terms of serum clearance (CL), intercompartmental CL(s) (Q) and volume(s) of distribution (V). The percentage of cefazolin binding to serum protein was 36.2 ± 5.3%. Population primary parameter estimates V1, V2, CL, and Q were (typical value ± SE) 0.116 ± 0.013 L/kg, 0.177 ± 0.011 L/kg, 0.0037 ± 0.0002 L/kg/min, and 0.0103 ± 0.0013 L/kg/min, respectively. Cefazolin presented rapid distribution and elimination half-lives (mean ± SE) 4.17 ± 0.77 min and 57.93 ± 3.11 min, respectively. The overall between-subject variability (BSV) for estimated primary parameters ranged from 36 to 42%, and none of the seven explored covariates were able to reduce this variability by an amplitude clinically relevant. By Monte Carlo simulation, the probability of a PK/PD target attainment (here to achieve a free serum concentration exceeding the MIC for 50% of the dosing interval in 90% of dogs) was computed with a dosage of 25 mg/kg administered IV every 6 h for 4 administrations in 24 h. The computed PK/PD cut off value was 2 mg/L. In conclusion, cefazolin administered prophylactically in surgical dogs at 25 mg/kg IV every 6 h was deemed effective against pathogens with a MIC value ≤ 2 mg/L and from a PK/PD perspective, can be recommended in a wide range of canine patient populations with no necessary dose adjustment for special dog subpopulations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to document the performance of a novel technique (OnlyOne), involving immediate restoration of postextraction implants supporting a partial or full-arch restoration. A retrospective analysis of patients with at least 3 years of follow-up was performed. Implants were tilted mesiodistally and vestibulopalatally according to the available bone. Prosthetically guided definitive abutments were connected at surgery and never disconnected. Anorganic bovine bone grafting was done to preserve the buccal bone and the ridge contour. Patients received a screw-retained provisional prosthesis within 24 hours of surgery and a final screw-retained prosthesis within 1 year. Prostheses emerged from natural soft tissue. Clinical and radiographic evaluation was routinely performed. A total of 70 patients received 153 implants in fresh extraction sockets. The mean follow-up was 38.0 ± 3.0 months (range 36 to 51 months). One implant failed at the 3-year follow-up. Implant survival was 99.3%. Marginal bone level change averaged -0.68 ± 1.2 mm at the last radiographic control. Immediate placement and restoration of implants designed for high primary stability with a definitive abutment placed at surgery and final screw-retained prosthesis with no artificial gingiva is a viable procedure with excellent medium-term outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Few examples of the involvement of a single gene in idiopathic short stature have been described until now. Our aim was to identify the causative gene of proportionate short stature in a large family showing co-segregation of the phenotype with the reciprocal translocation t(10;15)(q22;q24). METHODS FISH mapping was carried out with BACs and long-range PCR probes to identify the smallest genomic regions harboring the translocation breakpoints. Real-Time RT-PCR was performed in blood after pre-amplification of target genes cDNA. RESULT The affected family members presented with a final height of between - 2.41 and - 4.18 SDS and very mild skeletal dysmorphisms. Growth rates of the proband and of her cousin, whose childhood and pre-pubertal bone age corresponded to the chronological age, showed a poor growth spurt during treatment with rhGH. However, their adult height was greater than that of their untreated mothers, suggesting efficacy of GH therapy. Breakpoint mapping revealed that the translocation t(10;15)(q22.3;q26.1) disrupts, on 15q, the ACAN gene at intron 1, decreasing its transcriptional expression. CONCLUSIONS This is the first description of a chromosome rearrangement disrupting ACAN and leading to its haploinsufficiency. ACAN loss of function should be considered a potential underpinning of short patients who display a poor growth spurt and belong to families with autosomal dominant segregation of proportionate short stature. Besides this core phenotype, literature review suggests that advanced bone age, early onset osteochondritis dissecans, osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc disease as well as craniofacial dysmorphisms can be important suggestive phenotypes in affected families.

Abstract
Levucell®SC is the trade name for a feed additive based on viable cells of a strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The product is currently authorised for use in feed for horses, lambs, dairy sheep, dairy goats, dairy cows and cattle for fattening. This opinion concerns the renewal of the authorisation of Levucell®SC as a zootechnical additive for dairy ewes and dairy goats. S. cerevisiae is considered by EFSA to be suitable for the Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) approach to establishing safety for the target species, consumers and the environment. The identity of the strain present in the additive was established. Accordingly, this strain is presumed safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. Since no concerns are expected from other components of the additive, Levucell® SC is considered safe for the target species, consumers of products from animals fed the additive and the environment. The applicant has provided data demonstrating that the additive currently in the market complies with the conditions of authorisation. Furthermore, according to the information provided in the technical dossier, no new evidence has been identified that would make the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) reconsider the previous conclusions on the safety of the product for target species, consumers and the environment under the authorised conditions of use.

Abstract
The demand for real-time monitoring of cell functions and cell conditions has dramatically increased with the emergence of organ-on-a-chip (OOC) systems. However, the incorporation of co-cultures and microfluidic channels in OOC systems increases their biological complexity and therefore makes the analysis and monitoring of analytical parameters inside the device more difficult. In this work, we present an approach to integrate multiple sensors in an extremely thin, porous and delicate membrane inside a liver-on-a-chip device. Specifically, three electrochemical dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors were inkjet-printed along the microfluidic channel allowing local online monitoring of oxygen concentrations. This approach demonstrates the existence of an oxygen gradient up to 17.5% for rat hepatocytes and 32.5% for human hepatocytes along the bottom channel. Such gradients are considered crucial for the appearance of zonation of the liver. Inkjet printing (IJP) was the selected technology as it allows drop on demand material deposition compatible with delicate substrates, as used in this study, which cannot withstand temperatures higher than 130 °C. For the deposition of uniform gold and silver conductive inks on the porous membrane, a primer layer using SU-8 dielectric material was used to seal the porosity of the membrane at defined areas, with the aim of building a uniform sensor device. As a proof-of-concept, experiments with cell cultures of primary human and rat hepatocytes were performed, and oxygen consumption rate was stimulated with carbonyl-cyanide-4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone (FCCP), accelerating the basal respiration of 0.23 ± 0.07 nmol s-1/106 cells up to 5.95 ± 0.67 nmol s-1/106 cells s for rat cells and the basal respiration of 0.17 ± 0.10 nmol s-1/106 cells by up to 10.62 ± 1.15 nmol s-1/106 cells for human cells, with higher oxygen consumption of the cells seeded at the outflow zone. These results demonstrate that the approach of printing sensors inside an OOC has tremendous potential because IJP is a feasible technique for the integration of different sensors for evaluating metabolic activity of cells, and overcomes one of the major challenges still remaining on how to tap the full potential of OOC systems.

Abstract
The additive is a natural mixture mainly composed of illite (~ 53%), montmorillonite (~ 16%) and kaolinite (~ 17%), referred as MIMK. In 2016 and in 2017, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) delivered two opinions on the safety and efficacy of the additive. In these opinions, the Panel concluded that the additive is safe for piglets, pigs for fattening and cattle for fattening and minor growing ruminants at a maximum concentration of 50,000 mg/kg. No conclusions could be drawn on the safety for poultry or any other species/categories. Following these opinions, the European Commission gave the possibility to the applicant to submit complementary information in order to complete the assessment on the safety for all animal species. The applicant submitted a new tolerance study with chickens for fattening showing no adverse effect of the additive MIMK up to 100,000 mg/kg complete feed (twofold the highest recommended use level). The FEEDAP Panel therefore concludes that 50,000 mg MIMK/kg complete feed is safe for chickens for fattening. MIMK was already considered safe, at the same dietary concentration, for cattle for fattening with a margin of safety of two and for piglets but without a margin of safety. Therefore, extrapolation to all animal species is not possible for the concentration of 50,000 mg MIMK/kg complete feed. The Panel notes that the concentration of 20,000 mg MIMK/kg feed was tested in all the tolerance studies assessed and shown to be safe, with a margin of safety of at least 2.5. The Panel concludes that the additive MIMK is safe at 50,000 mg/kg complete feed for chickens for fattening and minor growing poultry species, for cattle for fattening and minor growing ruminant species and growing pigs; and at 20,000 mg/kg complete feed for all other animal species and categories.

In 2006, the FEEDAP Panel delivered an opinion on the safety and efficacy of the additive; subsequently it was authorised in the EU. The evidence provided indicates that the additive currently in the market complies with the conditions of authorisation. No new evidence was found that would make the FEEDAP Panel reconsidering its previous conclusions in the safety for target species, consumers and environment. In particular, the Panel confirms that the use of Sel-Plex® in animal nutrition does not pose a risk to consumers provided that the maximum selenium supplementation of 0.2 mg/kg feed from Sel-Plex® is not exceeded, yet respecting the maximum total selenium in feed of 0.5 mg/kg. In the context of the current application, the Panel reviewed toxicological studies; based on two repeated-dose studies on rats and dogs, it is concluded that the toxic potential of Sel-Plex® is only related to its selenium content. New data on characterisation of the additive and studies on effects on skin and eyes led the Panel reconsider the safety for the user. The Panel concluded that the additive is hazardous upon inhalation and a likely respiratory sensitiser; owing to the high dusting potential, persons handling the additive are at risk by inhalation. It is considered not irritant to the eyes and skin. A recommendation regarding the denomination of the additive under assessment was proposed by the Panel.

Abstract
We report herein a process safety assessment of the iron-catalyzed direct olefin diazidation for the preparation of a broad range of synthetically valuable vicinal primary diamines. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of the corresponding reagents, intermediates, and a list of representative diazide/diaminium salt products revealed that all of them are thermal stable at the reaction temperature. The drop weight test of the diazides suggested that they are moderately impact-sensitive. Guided by this assessment, an optimized olefin diazidation/diamination procedure has been developed which allows for the gram-scale diaminium salt synthesis without purification of the diazide intermediate.

Abstract
The aims of the investigation were to establish for the first time (i) clinical efficacy and (ii) pharmacokinetic profile of meloxicam intravenously (IV) administered in male Mediterranean buffalo calves after surgical orchiectomy. The study was performed on 10 healthy buffalo calves, between 4 and 5 months old and between 127 and 135 kg of body weight (b.w.). An IV injection of 0.5 mg/kg b.w. of meloxicam was administered in six calves (treated group, TG) immediately after surgery; the other four animals were used as untreated control group (CG). The clinical efficacy of meloxicam was evaluated pre- and post-surgery by monitoring respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (T°C), serum cortisol levels (SCL) and pain score (PS). Significant inter-groups differences were detected at sampling times (T): 4 hour (h) for RR (P<0.05), at T1-4-6-8 h for PS (P<0.05) and at T4-6-8 h for SCL (P < 0.0001). Regarding the mean intra-group values observed pre (T0) and post-surgery (from T15 min to T72 h), significant difference between the groups were found for RR (P<0.01), PS and SCL (P<0.05). The pharmacokinetic profile was best fitted by a two-compartmental model and characterized by a fast distribution half-life and slow elimination half-life (0.09 ± 0.06 h and 21.51 ± 6.4 h, respectively) and meloxicam mean concentrations at 96 h was of 0.18 ± 0.14 μg/mL. The volume of distribution and clearance values were quite low, but reasonably homogenous among individuals (Vdss 142.31 ± 55.08 mL/kg and ClB 4.38 ± 0.95 mL/kg/h, respectively). The IV administration of meloxicam in buffalo calves shows encouraging effects represented by significant and prolonged analgesic effects, significant reduction of SCL as well as similar pharmacokinetic profile to bovine calves.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The tumors of the head of the pancreas are one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in Western countries. The current gold standard for these tumors is a Whipple procedure. This procedure did not change in its surgical steps since when it was initially introduced in 1935. More recently, a laparoscopic approach with similar outcomes has been described. The aim of this paper is to describe the laparoscopic surgical technique performed in our unit, reporting single center postoperative outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS From the 1st January 2013 to the 31st December 2015 a database was created. Data about patients who underwent a laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) were collected prospectively. All patients were preoperatively assessed with blood samples, tumor markers, CT chest abdomen and pelvis and/or MRI pancreas. Only patients with specific characteristics were considered eligible for an LPD: performance status 0, body mass index (BMI) less than 30 kg/m2, a small neoplastic lesion (< 3.5 cm) confined to the pancreas, the absence of infiltrated organs and/or blood vessels (T1 or T2). Postoperative data and complications were recorded and described according to the Clavien-Dindo classification and the international study group of pancreatic surgery definitions. RESULTS In a time interval of 36 months, 31 patients with an initially considered resectable pancreatic cancer were referred. 11 patients were found to have metastasis during the preoperative workout. Only 10 patients were considered eligible for a LPD. Six of them were men (60%). The mean BMI was 25.01 kg/m2 (19.6-29.8). 5 patients, who underwent to LPD did not have any comorbidities. An overall 50% of all patients were jaundice at the time of diagnosis with a mean bilirubin level of 181.3 µmol/L (119.7-307.8). All patients with a direct bilirubin greater than 250 µmol/L underwent a preoperative percutaneous biliary drainage. In the majority of the LPD performed (50%), the histology reported a pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Other postoperative histology described were: IPMN (20%), ampullar neoplasia (20%) and neuroendocrine tumor (10%). Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy was never considered indicated. The reported postoperative complications were: 1 anastomotic bleeding, 2 pancreatic fistula, 1 infected intra-abdominal collection and 1 delay gastric emptying. The pancreatic fistulas were considered grade A and grade B. One fatality after LPD occurred because of an uncontrollable, diffuse severe hemorrhagic gastritis associated with a GJ anastomosis bleeding in the POD 25. The mean hospital stay was 12.3 days (8-25). The mean operative time was 224 min (170-310). There were no intraoperative complications. The main intraoperative blood loss was 220 ml (180-400) and intraoperative blood transfusions were not required. The resection margins were negative (R0) in 100% of cases and the mean lymph nodes harvested were 24 (18-40). The LPD is still a not common practice. Our results are comparable with those reported in literature about the open technique. These remarkable surgical outcomes are probably related to the extremely careful preoperative patient selection performed. The indication for a laparoscopic vs. an open pancreaticoduodenectomy was based on a CT scan pancreas performed less than 30 days before the planned date of surgery and a careful preoperative assessment. A low complication rate and a relative short stay in hospital were associated to a good quality of life in the early postoperative period and an early referral for postoperative chemotherapy. Good clinical outcomes were associated with outstanding oncological results. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy is a feasible surgical procedure. Remarkable oncological and surgical outcomes can be achieved with a morbidity and mortality rate in line with the data reported by the large series of open procedures.

Abstract
This work proposes an application of a minimal complexity physiologically based pharmacokinetic model to predict tramadol concentration vs time profiles in horses. Tramadol is an opioid analgesic also used for veterinary treatments. Researchers and medical doctors can profit from the application of mathematical models as supporting tools to optimize the pharmacological treatment of animal species. The proposed model is based on physiology but adopts the minimal compartmental architecture necessary to describe the experimental data. The model features a system of ordinary differential equations, where most of the model parameters are either assigned or individualized for a given horse, using literature data and correlations. Conversely, residual parameters, whose value is unknown, are regressed exploiting experimental data. The model proved capable of simulating pharmacokinetic profiles with accuracy. In addition, it provides further insights on un-observable tramadol data, as for instance tramadol concentration in the liver or hepatic metabolism and renal excretion extent.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of the paper and fines across seven landfill sites (LFS) and assess the relationship between waste physicochemical properties and biogas production. Physicochemical analysis of the waste samples demonstrated that there were no clear trends in the spatial distribution of total solids (TS), moisture content (MC) and waste organic strength (VS) across all LFS. There was however noticeable difference between samples from the same landfill site. The effect of landfill age on waste physicochemical properties showed no clear relationship, thus, providing evidence that waste remains dormant and non-degraded for long periods of time. Landfill age was however directly correlated with the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of waste; with the highest BMP obtained from the most recent LFS. BMP was also correlated with depth as the average methane production decreased linearly with increasing depth. There was also a high degree of correlation between the Enzymatic Hydrolysis Test (EHT) and BMP test results, which motivates its potential use as an alternative to the BMP test method. Further to this, there were also positive correlations between MC and VS, VS and biogas volume and biogas volume and CH4 content. Outcomes of this work can be used to inform waste degradation and methane enhancement strategies for improving recovery of methane from landfills.

Abstract
In arid and semi-arid zones, animal health and production are closely correlated with body conformation traits. These selected traits, in turn, allow livestock to adapt unfavorable soil and environmental conditions. The primary objective of this study was to perform a genome-wide association analysis for a set of sampled and imputed SNPs with 16 conformation traits in a population of Holstein cows from a desert area of Northwestern Mexico. Imputation from 6K to 50K SNPs was performed as a low-cost optimization strategy. Results show eight SNPs associated with two conformation traits. The Udder Depth trait resulted in seven associated SNPs from chromosome 10, that related to Marbling Score, Milk Yield, Fat Yield, Protein Yield, and Protein Percentage Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs). The Body Depth trait resulted in one associated SNP from chromosome 2, although no QTL relation was found. The discovery of genes associated with conformation traits may be indicative of the adaptive selection pressures the Holstein breed has undergone in response to the extreme weather conditions found in the northwestern areas of Mexico. Results of this study indicate that traits such as stature and body depth may be used as indicators of cows' potential genetic merits for milk, fat, and protein production.

Abstract
A method based on headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by GC-MS analysis was developed for the determination of underivatised acetic acid in fresh tuna fish muscle. Parameters such as the fibre selected and the extraction time and temperature were optimised and the linearity, detection limits and precision of the whole analytical procedure were assessed. The method was then applied to determine the acetic acid concentration in fresh yellowfin tuna muscles (Thunnus albacares) in order to evaluate the endogenous level and its variations during the shelf life under different storage conditions. A qualitative comparison was also made with variations in histamine levels to evaluate the possibility of the joint monitoring of acetic acid and histamine to identify fish stored in poor conditions. The caudal area always had a lower content of acetic acid than the ventral area, independent of the storage time and temperature. A difference was found between the 6- and 3-day time points and day 0 at a storage temperature of 8°C and between the 6-day time point and day 0 at a storage temperature of 0°C, independent of the anatomical area of the sampled tissue. The evaluation of acetic acid could represent an important approach in the field of food safety to detect the illicit use of acetic acid as an antibacterial preservative treatment or to eliminate the unpleasant smell of trimethylamine.

Abstract
In the first phases of an infectious outbreak, health authorities have to face the challenge of communicating uncertainty. Just when the attention of the public is at the top, information about what is going on is usually still missing. This is the case of Zika crisis in Latin America, where an association with microcephaly in newborns and neurological complications have been described, but not yet confirmed. Despite this, and even if the risk would be mainly limited to pregnant women, Zika threat is perceived by the general public as greater than others, such as those from dengue or flu. Some peculiarities of this outbreak explain such a gap between real and perceived risk. Nevertheless, in such a situation, WHO and other health authorities have the duty to act out of an abundance of caution, aware of the lose-lose game they are going through: if they raise alarm, and this subsided, they could be accused to fuel people's fears because of economic interests, as it happened in 2009 A(H1N1) pandemic; if they underestimate the threat, they could find themselves in front of a global tragedy.
