Abstract
Bone damage is a complex orthopedic problem primarily caused by trauma, cancer, or bacterial infection of bone tissue. Clinical care management for bone damage remains a significant clinical challenge and there is a growing need for more advanced bone therapy options. Nanotechnology has been widely explored in the field of orthopedic therapy for the treatment of a severe bone disease. Among nanomaterials, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) along with other biomaterials are emerging as a new paradigm for treatment with excellent potential for bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. In recent years, a great deal of research has focused on demonstrating the potential for GNPs to provide for enhancement of osteogenesis, reduction of osteoclastogenesis/osteomyelitis, and treatment of bone cancer. This review details the latest understandings in regards to GNPs based therapeutic systems, mechanisms, and the applications of GNPs against various bone disorders. The present review aims to summarize i) the mechanisms of GNPs in bone tissue remodeling, ii) preparation methods of GNPs, and iii) functionalization of GNPs and its decoration on biomaterials as a delivery vehicle in a specific bone tissue engineering for future clinical application.

Abstract
Eucalyptol (EU) is monoterpene oxide that is the main component of the essential oil extracted from aromatic plants such as Eucalyptus globules. EU has therapeutic effects such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in chronic diseases including inflammation disorder, respiratory disease, and diabetic disease. However, the effects of EU on osteoblast differentiation and bone diseases such as osteoporosis have not been studied. The present study investigated the effects of EU on osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. EU induces mRNA and protein expression of osteogenic genes in osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1 and primary calvarial osteoblasts. EU also promoted alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralization. Here, the osteoblast differentiation effect of EU is completely reversed by ERK inhibitor. These results demonstrate that osteoblast differentiation effect of EU is mediated by ERK phosphorylation. The efficacy of EU on bone formation was investigated using surgical bone loss-induced animal models. EU dose-dependently promoted bone regeneration in zebrafish caudal fin rays. In the case of ovariectomized mice, EU increased ERK phosphorylation and ameliorated bone loss of femurs. These results indicate that EU ameliorates bone loss by promoting osteoblast differentiation through ERK phosphorylation. We suggest that EU, plant-derived monoterpenoid, may be useful for preventing bone loss. KEY MESSAGES: Eucalyptol (EU) increases osteoblast differentiation in pre-osteoblasts. EU up-regulates the osteogenic genes expression via ERK phosphorylation. EU promotes bone regeneration in partially amputated zebrafish fin rays. Oral administration of EU improves ovariectomy-induced bone loss and increases ERK phosphorylation.

Abstract
Until recent, there are no ideal small diameter vascular grafts available on the market. Most of the commercialized vascular grafts are used for medium to large-sized blood vessels. As a solution, vascular tissue engineering has been introduced and shown promising outcomes. Despite these optimistic results, there are limitations to commercialization. This review will cover the need for extrusion-based 3D cell-printing technique capable of mimicking the natural structure of the blood vessel. First, we will highlight the physiological structure of the blood vessel as well as the requirements for an ideal vascular graft. Then, the essential factors of 3D cell-printing including bioink, and cell-printing system will be discussed. Afterwards, we will mention their applications in the fabrication of tissue engineered vascular grafts. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives will be discussed.

Abstract
199Three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds composed of various biomaterials, including metals, ceramics, and synthetic polymers, have been widely used to regenerate bone defects. However, these materials possess clear downsides, which prevent bone regeneration. Therefore, composite scaffolds have been developed to compensate these disadvantages and achieve synergetic effects. In this study, a naturally occurring biomineral, FeS2, was incorporated in PCL scaffolds to enhance the mechanical properties, which would in turn influence the biological characteristics. The composite scaffolds consisting of different weight fractions of FeS2 were 3D printed and compared to pure PCL scaffold. The surface roughness (5.77-fold) and the compressive strength (3.38-fold) of the PCL scaffold was remarkably enhanced in a dose-dependent manner. The in vivo results showed that the group with PCL/ FeS2 scaffold implanted had increased neovascularization and bone formation (2.9-fold). These results demonstrated that the FeS2 incorporated PCL scaffold might be an effective bioimplant for bone tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Despite advances in the bio-tissue engineering area, the technical basis to directly load hydrophobic drugs on chitosan (CTS) electrospun nanofibers (ENs) has not yet been fully established. In this study, we fabricated CTS ENs by using an electrospinning (ELSP) system, followed by surface modification using succinyl-beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) under mild conditions. The β-CD-modified CTS (βCTS) ENs had slightly increased hydrophobicity compared to pristine CTS ENs as well as decreased residual amine content on the surface. Through FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we characterized the surface treatment physiochemically. In the drug release test, we demonstrated the stable and sustained release of a hydrophobic drug (e.g., dexamethasone) loaded on β-CD ENs. During in vitro biocompatibility assessments, the grafting of β-CD was shown to not reduce cell viability compared to pristine CTS ENs. Additionally, cells proliferated well on β-CD ENs, and this was confirmed by F-actin fluorescence staining. Overall, the material and strategies developed in this study have the potential to load a wide array of hydrophobic drugs. This could be applied as a drug carrier for a broad range of tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Most cells, highly sensitive to oxygen levels, undergo apoptosis under hypoxia. Therefore, the involvement of hypoxia in rotator cuff tendon degeneration has been proposed. While previous studies have reported that hypoxia induces apoptosis in rotator cuff fibroblasts (RCFs), little research has investigated whether antioxidants have cytoprotective effects against RCF apoptosis. The present study aimed at determining whether the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) exerted cytoprotective effects against hypoxia-induced RCF apoptosis. Third-passage rat RCFs were divided into normoxia, NAC, hypoxia and NAC-hypoxia groups. The hypoxia inducer was 1,000 µmol/L cobalt chloride (CoCl2); the antioxidant was 20 mmol/L NAC. Expressions of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), cell viability, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, apoptosis rates as well as expressions of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved poly ADP-ribose polymerase-1 (PARP-1), vascular endothelial growth factors-β (VEGF-β) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) were evaluated. Expression of HIF-1α and HO-1 was significantly higher in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). Cell viability was significantly lower in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). Intracellular ROS production, apoptosis rate and expressions of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved PARP-1, VEGF-β and MMP-2 were significantly higher in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). All these responses were significantly attenuated by pre-treatment with NAC (p ≤ 0.001). ROS were involved in hypoxic RCF apoptosis induced by CoCl2; NAC, an ROS scavenger, inhibited hypoxia-induced RCF apoptosis by inhibiting ROS production.

Among many biomaterials, gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), a photocurable protein, has been widely used in 3D bioprinting process owing to its excellent cellular responses, biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, GelMA still shows a low processability due to the severe temperature dependence of viscosity. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a two-stage temperature control system to effectively control the viscosity of GelMA. To optimize the process conditions, we evaluated the temperature of the cooling system (jacket and stage). Using the established system, three GelMA scaffolds were fabricated in which different concentrations (0, 3 and 10 wt%) of silanated silica particles were embedded. To evaluate the performances of the prepared scaffolds suitable for hard tissue regeneration, we analyzed the physical (viscoelasticity, surface roughness, compressive modulus and wettability) and biological (human mesenchymal stem cells growth, western blotting and osteogenic differentiation) properties. Consequently, the composite scaffold with greater silica contents (10 wt%) showed enhanced physical and biological performances including mechanical strength, cell initial attachment, cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation compared with those of the controls. Our results indicate that the GelMA/silanated silica composite scaffold can be potentially used for hard tissue regeneration.

Abstract
MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) combined with microbubbles (MBs) is a promising technology that can facilitate drug delivery through a temporarily disrupted blood-brain barrier (BBB) and induce the down-regulation of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression on the blood vessels. Despite the increasing evidence regarding the down-regulation of P-gp expression after MRgFUS BBB disruption (BBBD), its underlying molecular events remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the underlying mechanism of FUS BBBD-mediated P-gp down-regulation. While our results showed down-regulation of P-gp at 24 h post-BBBD in transcriptional and translational levels, restoration to the normal expression appeared at different time points for transcriptional (72 h) and translational (120 h) levels. In addition, the signaling molecule, JNK, was significantly activated in the cerebral blood vessels at 24 h post-BBBD. Although P-gp levels were significantly decreased, the expression levels of proteins involved in the integrity of blood vessels, such as Glut1, ZO-1 and occludin, were not decreased at 24 h post-BBBD. Our study suggests that the JNK signaling pathway is involved in the regulation of FUS-induced P-gp expression, without affecting vessel integrity, and a detailed regulatory mechanism can provide the basis for clinical application of FUS to the treatment of neurological disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin grafts are required in numerous clinical procedures, such as reconstruction after skin removal and correction of contracture or scarring after severe skin loss caused by burns, accidents, and trauma. The current standard for skin defect replacement procedures is the use of autologous skin grafts. However, donor-site tissue availability remains a major obstacle for the successful replacement of skin defects and often limits this option. The aim of this study is to effectively expand full thickness skin to clinically useful size using an automated skin reactor and evaluate auto grafting efficiency of the expanded skin using Yucatan female pigs. METHODS We developed an automated bioreactor system with the functions of real-time monitoring and remote-control, optimization of grip, and induction of skin porosity for effective tissue expansion. We evaluated the morphological, ultra-structural, and mechanical properties of the expanded skin before and after expansion using histology, immunohistochemistry, and tensile testing. We further carried out in vivo grafting study using Yucatan pigs to investigate the feasibility of this method in clinical application. RESULTS The results showed an average expansion rate of 180%. The histological findings indicated that external expansion stimulated cellular activity in the isolated skin and resulted in successful grafting to the transplanted site. Specifically, hyperplasia did not appear at the auto-grafted site, and grafted skin appeared similar to normal skin. Furthermore, mechanical stimuli resulted in an increase in COL1A2 expression in a suitable environment. CONCLUSIONS These findings provided insight on the potential of this expansion system in promoting dermal extracellular matrix synthesis in vitro. Conclusively, this newly developed smart skin bioreactor enabled effective skin expansion ex vivo and successful grafting in vivo in a pig model.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Hypothermia is the current standard therapy for asphyxiated neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). Gentamicin is used for the empirical treatment of early-onset neonatal sepsis. We investigated the influence of hypothermia treatment on gentamicin pharmacokinetics and suggested the appropriate dosing recommendations for gentamicin in neonates with HIE receiving hypothermia treatment. METHODS We searched studies published until February 2017 in MEDLINE using PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library. Three independent reviewers screened the literature and extracted data from each study. All of the studies that reported the blood concentrations or pharmacokinetic parameters of gentamicin in hypothermic neonates with HIE were included in this review. Articles were excluded if they were not original research. RESULT AND DISCUSSION A total of 8 observational studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses were performed in which the mean difference of gentamicin for the trough concentration and clearance between hypothermic and normothermic neonates were 0.81 mg/L (95% confidence interval [-0.07, 1.69]) and -0.21 mL/kg/min (95% confidence interval [-0.31, -0.12]), respectively. The factors affecting gentamicin clearance in hypothermic neonates with HIE were gestational age, birthweight and serum creatinine. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION Gentamicin clearance is decreased in neonates with HIE receiving hypothermia treatment compared to those not receiving hypothermia treatment. Modified gentamicin dosing regimens are required to avoid potential toxicity related to higher concentrations during hypothermia treatment.

Abstract
Drug-eluting stents (DESs) are generally used in percutaneous coronary intervention. Paclitaxel (PTX) is widely used in DESs to suppress neointima, which causes restenosis. However, the PTX release profile is slow owing to its hydrophobic properties, resulting in negative effects on re-endothelialization in vessels. In this study, we assessed the effects of the controlled release of PTX particles of specific sizes on in-stent restenosis (ISR). PTX particle sizes were controlled by adjusting the evaporating temperature of the solvent from 25 to 80°C during ultrasonic coating, and DESs were prepared. The properties of prepared films and DESs were analyzed, and cell viability was assessed in vitro and in vivo. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/PTX500-loaded stents showed the most rapid release for 58 days, and smaller drug particles exhibited lower PTX release rates. In vivo, PLGA/PTX50-, PLGA/PTX250-, and PLGA/PTX500-loaded stents showed good efficacy for alleviating ISR as compared with bare metal stents and PLGA/PTX5-loaded stents. However, PLGA/PTX250- and PLGA/PTX500-loaded stents exhibited strut exposure and reduced recovery of the vascular compared with PLGA/PTX50-loaded stents. PTX drug particles of approximately 50 nm were most effective in vivo, and the control of particle size is a promising strategy for improving the performance of PTX-eluting stents. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Objective: To explore the method of extracting chaperone antigen peptide complexes from gastric cancer stem cells and its immune function. Methods: Gastric cancer stem cells and gastric cancer cells were screened by low temperature ultrasonic lysis. After salting out and dialysis, the lysate supernatant was processed with SDS-PAGE to analyze the expression of chaperone antigen peptide complexes, and then was separated and purified with CNBr-activated SepharoseTM 4B. Reverse high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), SDS-PAGE and Western blotting were used to analyze the purity and nature of the acquired albumen. Lymphocyte proliferation assay and lymphocytotoxicity assay were used to ditermine the immunological activity of the chaperone-antigen peptide complexes. Results: The chaperone antigen peptide complexes of gastric cancer stem cells were prepared and identified successfully, of which the main components were the antigen peptides of HSP60, HSP70, HSP90 and HSP110. 0.75 μg and 1.00 μg HSP70-antigen peptide and 1.00 μg HSP90-antigen peptide activated lymphocytes significantly. Their A(490) values were 0.26±0.03, 0.45±0.05 and 0.32±0.04, respectively, while the corresponding doses of HSP60-antigen peptide and HSP110-antigen peptide did not activate lymphocytes. The killing rates of 1.00 μg HSP70-antigen peptide and 1.00 μg HSP70 were (45.0±2.0)% and (16.0±2.0)%, respectively, showing a significant difference (P=0.012). Similarly, the killing rates of 1.00 μg HSP90-antigen peptide and 1.00 μg HSP90 were (36.0±5.0)% and (13.0±4.0)%, respectively, also showing a significant difference (P=0.048). Conclusions: The amount of chaperone antigen peptide complexes in gastric cancer cells is extremely low, but it is obviously increased in gastric cancer stem cells. After purification, the chaperone antigen peptide complexes with high purity can be prepared. The extracted chaperone antigen peptide complexes have stronger immunogenicity, and can be used to make tumor vaccine in vitro, which may have a good application value in the targeted therapy of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestations of surfactant protein C gene (SFTPC) exon-2 c. 115G>G/T (p.V39L). Method: Patients were screened for the entire coding sequence of SFTPC. Three cases from three children's hospital with mutation in p. V39L were reported. Result: All the three cases were females. The age of onset ranged from 2 months to 7 years. Two cases had recurrent lower respiratory tract infection and failed to thrive. One had chronic anoxia and clubbing fingers. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed diffused ground glass pattern, localized emphysema and intralobular septal thickening. In one case, early sign of cyst formation was also shown on CT. Two were lost to follow-up after alleviation of acute respiratory infection. One was treated with oral low-dose azithromycin and nebulized budesonide and terbutaline. She had recurrent lower respiratory tract infection in more than one year of follow-up. Conclusion: Mutations in SFTPC p. V39L cause interstitial lung diseases. Clinical manifestations included recurrent respiratory tract infections, chronic lung disease. Chest CT showing diffused ground glass pattern, localized emphysema, intralobular septal thickening and early sign of cyst formation. The treatment and prognosis need further study.

Abstract
Full skin auto-grafts are required for reconstruction of skin burns and trauma scars. However, currently available clinical approaches such as sheet skin graft, mesh skin grafts, artificial skin graft, and in vivo skin expansion have limitations due to their potential danger for secondary damage and scar formation at the donor site, and discomfort during skin expansion. We developed an advanced bioreactor system and evaluated its function in skin expansion using porcine full skin. The reactor was designed as a pneumatic cylinder type, was programmed to adjust the pressure and the operating time. The system was composed of culture chamber unit, environmental control unit, and monitoring unit. Skins were expanded at 200 kPa pneumatic force and the expanded skins were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and histology. Furthermore we carried out auto-grafting experiment of the expanded skins in vivo using Yucatan pigs and skins were harvested and histologically analyzed after 8 weeks. The results showed that the bioreactor expanded skins to 160% in 4 hours. Histological analysis of the expanded skins revealed that epidermal cells and dermal fibroblasts were viable and remained integrity. The results of auto-grafting experiment indicated that fibrosis and scars were not detected in the grafted skins. This study demonstrates that the newly developed skin bioreactor enabled to obtain large sized full skin rapidly and successful grating.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of diets with varying levels of calcium on egg production, shell quality and overall calcium status in aged laying hens. A total of five hundred 70-wk-old Hy-Line Brown layers were divided five groups and fed one of the five experimental diets with 3.5%, 3.8%, 4.1%, 4.4%, or 4.7% Ca, for 10 weeks. There were no significant differences in feed intake, egg production and egg weight among groups. The cracked eggs were linearly reduced as dietary Ca levels increased to 4.7% (p<0.01). A significant linear improvement for eggshell strength and thickness were determined with increasing dietary Ca levels (p<0.01). The contents of serum Ca and phosphorus were not affected by dietary Ca levels. With increase in dietary Ca levels, the tibial breaking strength slightly increased. There were no significant differences in the tibial contents of ash, Ca and phosphorus among groups. In conclusion, eggshell quality, as measured by appearance, strength and thickness of eggshell, were influenced by dietary Ca content as expected (p<0.05). These results suggested that aged laying hens require relatively higher level of Ca than required levels from current Korean feeding standards for poultry.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Pharmacogenetic studies of the genetic regulation of warfarin dose requirement have been reported, but few have been on the bleeding complications at therapeutic international normalized ratio (INR). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gene polymorphisms of CYP2C9, VKORC1, thrombomodulin (THBD) and C-reactive protein (CRP) on the risk of bleeding complications of warfarin at therapeutic INR in Korean patients with mechanical cardiac valves. METHODS A retrospective warfarin pharmacogenetic association study was performed. One hundred and forty-two patients with mechanical cardiac valves who were on warfarin anticoagulation therapy and maintained INR levels of 2·0-3·0 for 3 consecutive time intervals were followed up. CYP2C9 rs1057910, VKORC1 rs9934438, CRP rs1205, THBD rs1042580 and THBD rs3176123 were genotyped. The association between genotypes and warfarin bleeding complications was evaluated using logistic regression analysis, adjusted for demographic and clinical factors. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Of 142 eligible patients, 21 patients (14·8%) had bleeding complications at therapeutic INR. Patients with the G allele in THBD rs1042580 (AG or GG) had a lower risk of bleeding than patients with the AA genotype (adjusted OR: 0·210, 95% CI: 0·050-0·875, P = 0·032). The THBD rs3176123 polymorphism did not show any association with bleeding. For CRP rs1205, patients with the A allele (GA or AA genotype) had a higher risk of bleeding than patients with the GG genotype (adjusted OR: 5·575, 95% CI: 1·409-22·058, P = 0·014). Variant VKORC1 and CYP2C9 genotypes did not confer a significant increase in the risk for bleeding complications. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSIONS As expected, no association could be found between bleeding complications and two dose-related genes (CYP2C9*3 and VKORC1 rs9934438). In contrast, our results suggest that two genetic markers (THBD rs1042580 and CRP rs1205) could be predictors of bleeding complications of warfarin at normal INR. Given the retrospective study design and the relatively small sample size, our hypothesis requires further independent validation using more robust prospective designs. However, additional retrospective studies similar to ours but in populations with different genetic backgrounds should also be useful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Highly porous apatite-based bioceramic scaffolds have been widely investigated as three-dimensional (3D) templates for cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation promoting the bone regeneration. Their fragility, however, limits their clinical application especially for a large bone defect. METHODS To address the hypothesis that using a ZrO(2)/hydroxyapatite (HAp) composite might improve both the mechanical properties and cellular compatibility of the porous material, we fabricated ZrO(2)/HAp composite scaffolds with different ZrO(2)/HAp ratios, and evaluated their characteristics. In addition, porous ZrO(2)/HAp scaffolds containing bone marrow derived stromal cells (BMSCs) were implanted into critical-size bone defects for 6 weeks in order to evaluate the bone tissue reconstruction with this material. RESULTS The porosity of a ZrO(2)/HAp scaffold can be adjusted from 72% to 91%, and the compressive strength of the scaffold increased from 2.5 to 13.8MPa when the ZrO(2) content increased from 50 to 100wt%. The cell adhesion and proliferation in the ZrO(2)/HAp scaffold was greatly improved when compared to the scaffold made with ZrO(2) alone. Moreover, in vivo study showed that a BMSCs-loaded ZrO(2)/HAp scaffold provided a suitable 3D environment for BMSC survival and enhanced bone regeneration around the implanted material. SIGNIFICANCE We thus showed that a porous ZrO(2)/HAp composite scaffold has excellent mechanical properties, and cellular/tissue compatibility, and would be a promising substrate to achieve both bone reconstruction and regeneration needed in the treatment of large bone defects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Titanium plates and apatite blocks are commonly used for restoring large osseous defects in dental and orthopedic surgery. However, several cases of allergies against titanium have been recently reported. Also, sintered apatite block does not possess sufficient mechanical strength. In this study, we attempted to fabricate a composite material that has mechanical properties similar to biocortical bone and high bioaffinity by compounding hydroxyapatite (HAp) with the base material zirconia (ZrO(2)), which possesses high mechanical properties and low toxicity toward living organisms. METHODS After mixing the raw material powders at several different ZrO(2)/HAp mixing ratios, the material was compressed in a metal mold (8 mm in diameter) at 5 MPa. Subsequently, it was sintered for 5 h at 1500°C to obtain the ZrO(2)/HAp composite. The mechanical property and biocompatibility of materials were investigated. Furthermore, osteoconductivity of materials was investigated by animal studies. RESULTS A composite material with a minute porous structure was successfully created using ZrO(2)/HAp powders, having different particle sizes, as the starting material. The material also showed high protein adsorption and a favorable cellular affinity. When the mixing ratio was ZrO(2)/HAp=70/30, the strength was equal to cortical bone. Furthermore, in vivo experiments confirmed its high osteoconductivity. SIGNIFICANCE The composite material had strength similar to biocortical bones with high cell and tissue affinities by compounding ZrO(2) and HAp. The ZrO(2)/HAp composite material having micro porous structure would be a promising bone restorative material.

Abstract
Chitosan, which is derived from chitin, has drawn much attention due to its low toxicity and potential use in medical and pharmaceutical applications. The biological activities of chitosan have been shown to depend on its molecular weight (MW) and degree of deacetylation. In this study, we investigated whether oral chitooligosaccharides, which are easily absorbed into the body, can reduce the plasma level of lipid in smokers and non-smokers because smoking is a high-risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. All healthy men (11 smokers and 8 non-smokers) consumed 500 mg of chitooligosaccharides in water twice daily before a meal (breakfast and dinner) over a 6-week period. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly decreased in both the smoker group and non-smoker group when compared with baseline. These results suggest that low MW chitooligosaccharides would be an effective dietary supplement for lowering cholesterol level.

Abstract
Anodic TiO2 nanotubes were produced on titanium at 20 V using 1 M Na2SO4 and 0.5 wt% NaF. Oxidation for 3 hours produced amorphous tubes of diameter 100 nm and thicknesses 2 microm. Heat-treatments were done for 3 hours at different temperatures. 300 degrees C treatment converted the amorphous coatings to anatase. 550 and 700 degrees C treatments formed dual anatase and rutile; 850 degrees C treatment crystallized to rutile. The treatment at 700 degrees C produced an oxide surface with higher roughness, lower wetting angle and higher coating adhesion. Bioactivity of the as-oxidized and heated coatings were evaluated by treating them in a simulated body fluid (SBF) to form hydroxyapatite (HA) and the rates of HA formation were compared. Deposits of HA could be seen on the dual oxide structure within 3 days. HA was detected after 7 days in the anatase structure and only after 21 days in the amorphous and rutile structures. In vitro cell culture tests done using mouse osteoblasts indicated that, the 700 degrees C-heated surface showed higher levels of cell activity than the other surfaces. It is concluded that the dual rutile and anatase structure formed by heating the oxide at 700 degrees C is the best of the five surfaces tested.

Abstract
It has been shown that Ha127 in the genome of Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaNPV) has homologs in some other baculoviruses and encodes a putative protein of 192 aa. In this study, a sequence analysis showed the transcription initiation site in Ha127 gene at nts 188 upstream of the translation initiation codon ATG and a potential leucine zipper motif at aa 34-55 in the corresponding protein. Ha127 transcripts were detected in HaNPV-infected HzAM1 cells at 18-72 hrs post infection ( p.i.) by RT-PCR, while the corresponding protein was found at 24-72 hrs p.i. by Western blot analysis suggesting that Ha127 is a late gene product. The size of detected Ha127 protein was about 28 K, a larger value than the predicted 22.6 K indicating a post-translational modification. Immunofluorescence assay of HzAM1 cells infected with HaNPV and Ha127-EGFP expression showed that Ha127 protein was localized in the nucleus. In summary, these data suggested that Ha127 was a functional ORF that might play a role in the nucleus during the late or very late gene expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) but not quiescent HSCs express cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), suggesting that the COX-2/prostanoid pathway has an active role in hepatic fibrogenesis. However, the role of COX-2 inhibitors in hepatic fibrogenesis remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the antifibrotic effects of celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor. METHODS The effects of various COX inhibitors-that is, ibuprofen, celecoxib, NS-398 and DFU, were investigated in activated human HSCs. Then, the antifibrotic effect of celecoxib was evaluated in hepatic fibrosis developed by bile duct ligation (BDL) or peritoneal thioacetamide (TAA) injection in rats. RESULTS Celecoxib, NS-398 and DFU inhibited platelet-derived growth facor (PDGF)-induced HSC proliferation; however, only celecoxib (> or =50 microM) induced HSC apoptosis. All COX inhibitors completely inhibited prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and PGI(2) production in HSCs. Separately, PGE(2) and PGI(2) induced cell proliferation and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation in HSCs. All COX inhibitors attenuated ERK activation, but only celecoxib significantly inhibited Akt activation in HSCs. Celecoxib-induced apoptosis was significantly attenuated in HSCs infected with adenovirus containing a constitutive active form of Akt (Ad5myrAkt). Celecoxib had no significant effect on PPARgamma (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma) expression in HSCs. Celecoxib inhibited type I collagen mRNA and protein production in HSCs. Oral administration of celecoxib (20 mg/kg/day) significantly decreased hepatic collagen deposition and alpha-SMA (alpha-smooth muscle actin) expression in BDL- and TAA-treated rats. Celecoxib treatment significantly decreased mRNA expression of COX-2, alpha-SMA, transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1) and collagen alpha1(I) in both models. CONCLUSIONS Celecoxib shows a proapoptotic effect on HSCs through Akt inactivation and shows antifibrogenic effects in BDL- and TAA-treated rats, suggesting celecoxib as a novel antifibrotic agent of hepatic fibrosis.

Abstract
In 2006 and 2007, a new bacterial disease was observed in field-cultivated soybeans in Boeun District and Munkyung City of Korea. The disease caused severe blighting of soybean (Glycine max) leaves. Soybean leaves in fields showed yellowish spots with brown centers. Brown and dead areas of variable size and shape were surrounded by wide, yellow haloes with distinct margins. Spots might coalesce and affected leaves fell readily. Seven bacterial strains were isolated from chlorotic areas of soybean leaves and all produced white colonies on trypticase soy agar. With the Biolog Microbial Identification System, version 4.2, (Biolog Inc., Hayward, CA) all strains and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci CFBP2106T were identified as P. syringae pv. tabaci with a Biolog similarity index of 0.28 to 0.52 and 0.48 after 24 h. Pathogenicity of the strains (three plants per strain) on soybean leaves at the V5 stage (cv. Hwanggeum) was confirmed by rub inoculation with bacterial suspensions (1 × 108 CFU/ml) in sterile distilled water on the lesions cut 1 cm long on the upper side of the leaves with razor blades and by pinprick on 3-week-old leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun) in the greenhouse. Wildfire symptoms on the soybean leaves and faint halos on tobacco leaves were observed 4 days after inoculation. The identification of reisolated bacterial strains was confirmed with the metabolic fingerprintings on Biolog. LOPAT tests (1) and phenotypic characteristics (3) of the strains were similar to those of the CFBP2106T. Colonies were levan positive, oxidase negative, potato soft rot negative, arginine dihydrase negative, and tobacco hypersensitivity negative. All strains were gram-negative, aerobic rods with a polar flagellum. Strains were negative for esculin hydrolysis, gelatin liquefaction, urea production, accumulation of poly-β-hydroxy butyrate, starch hydrolysis, ornithine dihydrolase, lysine dihydrolase, growth at 37°C, utilization of geraniol, benzoate, cellobiose, sorbitol, trehalose, l-rhamnose, and adonitol. Positive reactions were catalase and arbutin hydrolysis, utilization of sorbitol, d-arabinose, and dl-serine. The strains were variable in utilization of mannitol, sucrose, and d-arabinose. The 1,472-bp PCR fragments of strains, BC2366 (GenBank Accession No. FJ755788) and BC2367 (No. FJ755789) was sequenced using 16S rDNA universal primers (2). The sequences shared 100% identity with the analogous sequences of P. syringae pv. glycenea (GenBank Accession No. AB001443) available in NCBI databases. Based on the phenotypic, genetic, and pathological characteristics, all strains were identified as P. syringae pv. tabaci. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of regular treadmill exercise on nerve growth factor (NGF) expression, the improvement of cognitive function in the hippocampus of diabetic rats, and to understand the molecular mechanisms through which the relevant signaling factors act. We investigated the effects of regular treadmill exercise for 6 weeks on NGF, tyrosine kinase receptor A (TrkA), p75 receptor, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2), cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB), and caspase-3 protein levels; we also assessed cell survival and cognitive function. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: (1) normal control group (NCG: n=10); (2) normal exercise group (NEG: n=10); (3) diabetes control group (DCG: n=10), and (4) diabetes exercise group (DEG: n=10). Diabetes was induced by injecting streptozotocin (STZ; 55 mg/kg dissolved in 0.05 M citrate buffer, pH 4.5, i.p.) into rats. Rats were subjected to treadmill exercise for 5 days a week over 6 weeks, and the speed of the treadmill was gradually increased. In a passive avoidance test, the retention latency in the DCG was significantly shorter than that in the DEG (P<0.05). Increased 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-5'-mono-phosphate (BrdU)-labeled cells (P<0.001) and significant increases in NGF and TrkA protein levels were observed in the hippocampal dentate gyrus in the NEG and DEG (P<0.001 and P<0.01, respectively). The p75 receptor protein level significantly increased in the NEG but decreased in the DCG (P<0.001). The p-PI3-K and t-CREB protein levels significantly increased in the NEG (P<0.001 and P<0.05, respectively), whereas t-Erk1/2 significantly decreased in the DCG (P<0.01, P<0.01, respectively). p-Erk1/2 and p-CREB protein levels significantly increased in the NEG and DEG (P<0.001, P<0.001, and P<0.01, respectively). Caspase-3 protein levels significantly increased in the DCG (P<0.001). These results show that treadmill exercise improves cognitive function, increases the number of BrdU-labeled cells, and increases NGF levels, by the activation of the MAPK/Erk1/2 signaling pathway in the hippocampus of diabetic rats.

Abstract
In 2007, a new bacterial disease was observed in greenhouse-cultivated cherry tomatoes in Cheorwon and Iksan provinces, Korea. The disease caused severe wilt of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Koko). Infected young petioles were curled downward. Margins of the leaves rolled upward and whole leaves were distorted. Stem cankers had reddish or dark brown cavities. Vascular tissues in stems cut longitudinally were brown to deep brown, but no bird's eye lesions were observed. Eight bacterial strains recovered from the stems of wilted tomatoes produced yellow colonies on nutrient broth-yeast extract agar and pink colonies on triphenyl tetrazolium chloride. Pathogenicity of the strains (three plants per strain) on 18-day-old tomatoes (cv. Koko) was confirmed by clip inoculation of petioles of second leaves and spray inoculation with bacterial suspensions (1 × 108 CFU/ml) in sterile distilled water. Wilt and canker symptoms were observed 2 weeks after inoculation. Symptoms produced by both inoculation methods were systemic and localized. Clip inoculation of tomatoes resulted in wilt, defoliation, and open stem cankers, whereas small, white spots (2 to 3 mm in diameter) and sometimes water-soaked, dark brown-to-black lesions on the leaf margins were observed with spray inoculation. Bacteria were reisolated from stems and leaves of the inoculated plants and their identities confirmed by direct PCR using specific primer set CMM5/CMM6 (1). No symptoms were observed on negative control plants inoculated with sterile water. All strains were gram-positive aerobic rods with no polar flagella. Strains were positive for esculin hydrolysis, gelatin liquefaction, H2S production from peptone, utilization of citrate and succinate, and acid from d(+)mannose and negative for starch hydrolysis, casein hydrolysis, methyl red reaction, acid from inulin, mannitol, d(+)-melezitose and d(-)sobitol, and utilization of acetate, formate, lactate, propionate, and ribose. Identification as C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis was confirmed using 16S rDNA universal primers fD1 and rP2 (4) and internal primers (3). The 1,439-bp PCR fragment of strain BC2643 was sequenced (GenBank Accession No. EU685335) and compared with reference C. michiganensis subspecies strains in GenBank: AM410696 (C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis), AM410693 (C. michiganensis subsp. tessellarius), AM410697 (C. michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis), AM410694 (C. michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus), and AM410695 (C. michiganensis subsp. insidiosus). The sequence had a similarity index of 0.999 calculated by Juke-Cantor model (2) with the 16S rRNA sequence of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (AM410696). The fragment size of eight strains amplified by PCR using CMM5/CMM6 (1) was identical to that of the C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis reference strain KACC20122. On the basis of the physiological, genetic, and pathological characteristics, all strains were identified as C. michiganensis subsp. michiganenesis. Abstract
In Japan, the need to improve countermeasures against biological weapons was recognised after the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use biological weapons in 1995. This paper describes how the two relevant ministries in Japan worked together to cope with recent disease outbreaks, including cases of classical swine fever (CSF) and avian influenza, which evidence suggests might have been the result of the deliberate misuse of unauthorised vaccines that had been illegally imported. By implementing successful control measures the two ministries were able to eradicate all the diseases within very short periods. In the past few years, the Republic of Korea has also experienced outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, highly pathogenic avian influenza, and CSF, all of which had previously been absent (or had been eradicated) in Korea. A review of the historical background, major events of the outbreaks and the control measures which were implemented are presented here.

Abstract
Traceback systems in most countries of Asia are not well developed, as indicated by responses to a questionnaire by veterinary officials in thirteen countries. Marking of animals for traceback is practised only in a limited number of countries in specific areas or zones and for specific purposes only. In Malaysia, traceback has been undertaken by marking farm code tattoos on pigs. This enables the identification of the farm of origin of pigs found to be infected by Nipah virus in sero-surveillance programmes. The origin of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus that surfaced in the Republic of Korea in March 2000 was investigated through several epidemiological studies of suspected sources of contamination such as imported hay, yellow sand, milk collection trucks and feed delivery trucks. None of these studies gave results that indicated the origin of the FMD virus. The origin of the FMD virus that was recorded in Japan in March 2000 was also investigated in epidemiological studies; in this case, imported wheat straw was incriminated as the most likely source of infection. Comparative studies of the pathogenicities of FMD (type O) viruses isolated in Taipei China, the Republic of Korea and Japan, suggest that these viruses might have originated as vaccine strains used in a third country.

Abstract
To explore the swinepox virus (SPV) as a potential live vector for immunization, a vector was developed for the construction of a recombinant SPV carrying foreign genes. In this system, a foreign gene placed under the strong vaccinia virus promoter P(11) can be inserted into the viral thymidine kinase (TK) gene, and the recombinant virus can be isolated in a non-selective medium by the co-expression of E. coli lacZ gene. Compared with the wild type virus, the TK(-)recombinant SPV showed a modest level of attenuation in porcine cells while more attenuation was observed in monkey or human cells. Using this system, a recombinant virus expressing the E2 glycoprotein of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) was produced. Engineered with the gX signal sequence of the pseudorabies virus, and transmembrane domain of E2, the E2 protein was expressed as a dimeric form in the cytoplasm of the infected cells.

Abstract
For the potential use as recombinant vaccine, canine parvovirus (CPV) major capsid protein VP2 was expressed using Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) vector. CPV VP2 gene was introduced into polyhedrin-based BmNPV transfer vector pBmKSK3, and recombinant virus BmK1-Parvo was prepared. When anti-CPV.VP2 monoclonal antibody was employed in immunofluorescence staining, an intense signal was observed within BmK1-Parvo-infected Bm5 cells but not within uninfected cells or cells infected with a wild-type BmNPV-K1. In hemagglutination assay, the expression level of VP2 were 3.2 x 10(3) HA units/ml from infected Bm5 cells, 2.1x 10(5) HA units/larvae from infected larval fat body, and 1.6x 10(6) HA units/ml from infected larval hemolymph. These results suggested that BmNPV vector system using B. mori larva as host could be applied to efficient mass-production of recombinant vaccines.

Abstract
The gene encoding the envelope glycoprotein (E2) of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) was expressed in a baculovirus. The expressed protein was detected on the surface of infected cells by immunofluorescence. Western blotting analysis showed the presence of the expressed protein of a similar molecular size to the E2 protein. The antigenicity of expressed protein were tested in guinea pigs and cattle. The immunized animals developed neutralizing antibodies against BVDV.

Abstract
Four 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine conjugates (ara-C) (1a, b and 2a, b) of sn-1 and sn-3 isomers of 1-O-octadecyl-2-O-palmitoylglycerol and its 1-S-alkyl analogue have been synthesized, and their antitumor activity against L1210 lymphoid leukemia in mice were compared with those of the previous conjugates (3a, b) of racemates in order to determine the significance of chirality of the glycerol moieties for activity. Administration (i.p.) of a single dose (300 mg/kg) of conjugates of sn-1 (1a), sn-3 (2a) and rac (3a) isomers of the ether lipid increased lifespan of i.p. implanted L1210 lymphoid leukemic DBA/2J mice by 169, 175 and 236%, respectively. The sn-1 (1b), sn-3 (2b), and rac (3b) isomers of the thioether lipid with a single dose of 300 mg/kg produced an increase in lifespan values of 238, 263 and 250%, respectively. The results indicate that chirality of the glycerol moieties appears not to be critical for the activity, and racemates 3a and 3b are promising prodrugs of ara-C for further clinical investigations.

Abstract
Among the 33 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against pseudorabies virus (PRV) examined, three MAbs (24-17, 74-26, and 8) were found to react with cells infected with Marek's disease virus (MDV)-related viruses by immunofluorescence test. Two of the MAbs (24-17 and 74-26) reacted with the nuclei of cells infected with MDV serotype 1 (MDV1), MDV serotype 2 (MDV2), and herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT), whereas MAb 8 reacted with the cytoplasm of MDV2- and HVT-infected cells. However, none of the MAbs against MDV1, MDV2, and HVT that were examined reacted with PRV-infected cells. None of these three MAbs against PRV reactive with MDV-related viruses cross-reacted with the cells infected with other herpesviruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, or human herpesvirus 6. Southern-blot hybridization under stringent or less-stringent conditions showed that no significant DNA homology was detected between PRV DNA and MDV DNA.

Abstract
New reactions of methyl 2,2-difluoro glycosides are described that were utilized for synthesis of some novel nucleoside derivatives. Thus, treatment of methyl 2-deoxy-2,2-difluoro-3,4-O-isopropylidene-alpha (beta)-D-erythro-pyranoside (2) with anhydrous HCl resulted in selective displacement of one fluorine atom with chlorine to give a 2-deoxy-2-chloro-2-fluoro glycoside 3. Reaction of 3 with silylated uracil in the presence of SnCl4 provided a 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-2-uracil-substituted glycoside 4. 2-Fluoro-2-deoxy glycosides substituted with other pyrimidines at C-2 were prepared similarly by the reaction of acylated 2,2-difluoro or 2-fluoro-2-bromo derivatives (5 and 6, respectively) with silylated pyrimidines. The resulting 2'-fluorinated isonucleosides were evaluated for their antitumor and antiviral activities. Compounds 7a,b, 8a,b, and 10a,b demonstrated 50% tumor cell growth inhibition in vitro (IC50) at 10(-4)-10(-5) M. At similar concentrations no antiviral activity was observed in vitro. Therapeutic activity was obtained with 7a,b and 8a,b in DBA/2 mice with L1210 leukemia. Administration of 7a,b at 500 mg/kg, ip daily, for 5 consecutive days, resulted in a 55% increase in life span (% ILS) while administration of 8a,b in the same manner at 200 mg/kg caused a 29% ILS. Treatment with 7a,b to mice with drug-resistant L1210 sublines (5-FU and araC) resulted in 22 and 57% increases in life span, respectively. Lewis lung carcinoma and M5076 sarcoma in mice also responded to the administration of 7a,b with reductions in tumor growth for both tumors and significant increases in life span in mice with Lewis lung carcinoma. Although the mechanism of action of 7a,b is not known, it has been found to be a relatively fast-acting, cell-cycle nonspecific cytotoxic agent that decreases [3H]deoxyuridine incorporation, blocks L1210 cells at the G2 phase of the cell cycle, and is not reversed by exogenous thymidine. These 2'-fluorinated isonucleosides have demonstrated biological activity and may have potential as antitumor drugs.

Abstract
Three 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-diphosphate-1,2-dipalmitins from L-, D-, and DL-alpha-dipalmitoylphosphatidic acids have been synthesized and their antitumor activity against two ara-C2 resistant L1210 lymphoid leukemia sublines in mice were evaluated. These new prodrugs of ara-C include ara-CDP-L-dipalmitin, ara-CDP-D-dipalmitin, and ara-CDP-DL-dipalmitin. The L and DL isomers produced significant increase in life span (greater than 400%) and four to five long-term survivors (greater than 45 days) out of six animals bearing ip implanted partially ara-C resistant L1210 subline [L1210/ara-C (I)], while the D isomer displayed a marginal activity (ILS 100-121%). In contrast, the L isomer was completely ineffective against deoxycytidine kinase deficient ara-C resistant L1210 subline [L1210/ara-C (II)]. However, the results demonstrate that the L and DL isomers of ara-CDP-dipalmitin are promising new prodrugs of ara-C with improved efficacy.

Abstract
Three new 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine conjugates of ether lipids (alkyl glycerols) linked by a pyrophosphate diester bond have been prepared and evaluated against mouse leukemia L1210 and P388. These include ara-CDP-rac-1-O-hexadecyl-2-O-palmitoylglycerol (9a) (ara-CDP = 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-diphosphate), ara-CDP-rac-1-O-octadecyl-2-O-palmitoylglycerol (9b), and ara-CDP-rac-1-O-octadecyl-2-O-methylglycerol (9c). Among them, conjugate 9a produced significant increase in life span (200-293%) in mice bearing ip and ic implanted L1210 lymphoic leukemia at a total dose of 400-500 mg (406-508 mumol/kg). Significant schedule dependence was not observed when the conjugate was given ip once daily on day 1, days 1, 5, and 9, and days 1-5. The new conjugates are water soluble by sonication.

Abstract
Three 5'-(steroid-21-phosphoryl)-5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridines (VI-VIII) have been prepared and characterized by uv, ir, 1H-nmr, elemental analysis, chemical and enzymatic hydrolyses. These new compounds are 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine conjugates of cortisol (VI), cortico-sterone (VII), and prednisolone (VIII). Besides the physical and analytical data, all of the conjugates were demonstrated to be enzymatically hydrolyzed to the corresponding steroid and 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine 5'-monophosphate (III), and the latter was further shown to be hydrolyzed to 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine (II) by phosphodiesterase I, 5'-nucleotidase, and acid phosphatase. However, they were shown to be resistant to hydrolysis by bacterial alkaline phosphatase.

Abstract
Methyl 6-(ammonium 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl phosphate)-alpha-D-mannopyranoside was synthesized and identified by 1H-n.m.r. and 13C-n.m.r. data, acid hydrolysis, and elemental analysis. It was utilized for the determination of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase in an assay procedure that employed methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside as an acceptor. The assay product was identified and characterized by thin-layer chromatography with the title reference compound. The present technique does not require [32P]UDP-N-acetylglucosamine, but effectively uses commercially available UDP-[14C]GlcNAc.

Abstract
A simple method for obtaining the title compounds was found in the alkaline rearrangement of S-2-aminoethylisothiouronium salts, which were obtained from the condensation of thiourea or substituted thioureas with 2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide. No activity was found for the substituted guanidines against P388 lymphocytic leukemia in mice, or as H2-receptor antagonists.

Abstract
The L-, D-, and D,L-isomers of 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-diphosphate-1,2-dipalmitin, new prodrugs of ara-C5, have been evaluated for antitumor activity in L1210 lymphoid leukemic mice. The L-isomer produced significant increase in life span (ILS), and longterm survivors among mice bearing i.p. and i.c. implanted L1210 leukemia and the maximal ILS values found were greater than 543 and greater than 374% with five and four 45-day survivors out of six mice, respectively, at the optimal single doses of 300 mg/kg and 125 mg/kg. The D- and D,L-isomers also displayed significant in vivo antitumor activity against both i.p. and i.c. implanted L1210 leukemia in mice with ILS range of 144-293% at a total dose of 125-250 mg/kg. Significant schedule dependency was not observed when the conjugates were administered i.p. once daily for 5 days, once every 4 days, or as a single dose, but single doses typically produced the best effects. The L-isomer was found to be a more effective prodrug of ara-C than its isomers and other lipophilic prodrugs, 5'-O-palmitoyl-ara-C and N4-acyl-ara-C. Unlike the latter prodrugs, the new conjugates are water soluble by sonication method.

Abstract
Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from mink with progressive Aleutian disease (AD) were shown to be significantly less responsive to phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, and pokeweed mitogen than were PBL from normal mink and from mink with a nonprogressive form of AD. Response to the virus of AD was significantly greater in PBL cultures from mink with nonprogressive AD than in those from normal mink or mink with progressive AD. After experimental infection with AD virus, mink PBL were responsive to viral antigen only transiently. These findings suggest that lymphocyte responsiveness as indicated by transformation induced by mitogens or viral antigen may be an important aspect of host response to infection with the parvovirus of AD.

Abstract
A method for obtaining N-beta-D-glucopyranosylthioureas was found in the aminolysis of N-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-5-aralkylidenerhodan ines. Aminolysis of the triacetylated or tribenzoylated ribosylrhodanines generally did not give ribosylthioureas but resulted in glycosidic cleavage, although N-(2,3,5-tri-O-benzoyl-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)thioureas were obtained using morpholine and hydroxylamine. Ring closure of N-beta-D-glucopyranosylthiourea with ethyl bromopyruvate gave ethyl 2-(N-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)aminothiazole-4-carboxylate, and ammonolysis led to the corresponding 4-carboxamide. Antimicrobial screening against five microorganisms showed that N-(2,3,5-tri-O-acetyl-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)rhodanine and the glucosylaminothiazole-4-carboxylate had the broadest spectrum of inhibitory activity, although the thioureas usually showed inhibition of some organisms.

Abstract
Inapparent of nonprogressive Aleutian disease virus (ADV) infection is a subclinical but persistent virus infection of mink. Mink with the inapparent type of ADV infection when subjected to stress did not develop the progessive form of the disease. However, when challenged with a large dose of the virus, these mink did develop progressive Aleutian disease indicating that they were not highly resistant to the virus. Sera of mink with either the progressive of the inapparent type of ADV infection did not neutralise the virus. The anti-ADV antibody activity in mink with inapparent type of ADV infection was in the IgG fraction of the serum the same as in mink with progressive Aleutian disease. These data indicate that the resistance of the mink with inapparent infection as compared to mink with progressive Aleutian disease was not due to a difference in the class of immunoglobulin response to the virus. However, mink with progressive Aleutian disease showed a greatly increased immunoglobulin response.

Abstract
In apparent or nonprogressive Aleutian disease virus infection was considered a subclinical but persistent viral infection in which infected mink did not develop tissue lesions, hypergammaglobulinemia, or high antibody titers. Transmission of Aleutian disease virus from mink with this type of infection was measured. Mink with inapparent Aleutian disease appeared healthy and had normal gamma-globulin values, but were capable of transmitting the disease by direct and indirect horizontal contact. The risk of direct or indirect horizontal transmission from mink with inapparent infection was less than from mink with progressive Aleutian disease. Infection also was directly transmitted from the dam to the kits, but again the risk of infection from dams with inapparent infection was less than from dams with progressive Aleutian disease. Mink infected from their dams before weaning developed the disease more slowly than mink which became infected after weaning.

Abstract
The normal serum gamma-globulin centration of mink from the Ontario Veterinary College field station was 13.2 +/- 2.6% of total serum proteins. Mink serum gamma-globulin concentrations above 21%, which represented 3 standard deviations above the normal mean, were considered to be hypergammaglobulinemic. About 39% of pastel mink infected naturally with Aleutin disease virus (ADV) exhibited an inapparent or nonprogressive infection. These nonprogressivley infected mink had serum gamma-globulin values below 21% andhad antibody titers less than 256 if tested by the couterimmunoelectrophoresis technique. Mink maintained inapparent infection for at least 10 months after infection with ADV. Neither gross nor histopathologic changes were present in the mink with inapparent ADV infection. The virus persisted in blood, mesenteric lymph nodes, kidney, liver, and spleen of mink with non-progressive infection, although the amount of virus present probably was small.
