Abstract
Purpose: To characterise thermoregulatory and performance responses of elite road-race athletes, while competing in hot, humid, night-time conditions during the 2019 IAAF World Athletic Championships. Method: Male and female athletes, competing in the 20 km racewalk (n=20 males, 24 females), 50 km racewalk (n=19 males, 8 females) and marathon (n=15 males, 22 females) participated. Exposed mean skin (Tsk) and continuous core body (Tc) temperature were recorded with infrared thermography and ingestible telemetry pill, respectively. Results: The range of ambient conditions (recorded roadside) were 29.3-32.7°C air temperature, 46-81 % relative humidity, 0.1-1.7 m∙s-1 air velocity and 23.5-30.6°C wet bulb globe temperature. Tc increased by 1.5 ± 0.1°C but mean Tsk decreased by 1.5 ± 0.4°C over the duration of the races. Tsk and Tc changed most rapidly at the start of the races and then plateaued, with Tc showing a rapid increase again at the end, in a pattern mirroring pacing. Performance times were between 3 to 20 % (mean = 113 ± 6%) longer during the championships compared to the personal best (PB) of athletes. Overall mean performance relative to PB was correlated with the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) of each race (R2 = 0.89), but not with thermophysiological variables (R2 ≤ 0.3). Conclusion: As previously reported in exercise heat stress, in this field study Tc rose with exercise duration, whereas Tsk showed a decline. The latter contradicts the commonly recorded rise and plateau in laboratory studies at similar ambient temperatures, but without realistic air movement.

Abstract
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) originated from South America; therefore, it is vulnerable to low temperature. Here, the evolutionary analysis of 22 cold-responsive genes in 35 plant species revealed that the identified MYC-type basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors exhibit diverse structures. We found that the number of bHLH gene family members was significantly lower than that of cold-tolerant species. We further systematically evaluated the gene structure, promoter analysis, synteny analysis, and expression pattern of 28 bHLH gene family members in sweet potato. The basic helix-loop-helix protein 116 (IbbHLH116) has the closest phylogeny to the AtICE1 protein of A. thaliana. However, the IbbHLH116 protein from cold-tolerant variety FS18 showed a 37.90% of sequence homology with AtICE1 protein. Subcellular localization analysis showed that IbbHLH116 is localized in the nucleus. The transcripts of IbbHLH116 were highly accumulated in cold-tolerant genotype FS18, particularly in new leaves and stems, compared to the cold-sensitive genotype NC1 under cold stress. Overexpression of IbbHLH116 in the wild type (Col-0) A. thaliana significantly enhanced cold tolerance in transgenic plants by regulating activities of oxidative protective enzymes, such as peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), proline and soluble proteins. Moreover, overexpression of IbbHLH116 in ice1 mutant A. thaliana fully rescued the cold-sensitive phenotype by promoting the expression of C-repeat binding factors 3 (CBF3). Overexpression of IbbHLH116 in the sweet potato callus also induced the expression of CBF3 under low temperature. These results imply that IbbHLH116 can perform the function of the ICE1 gene in conferring cold tolerance in sweet potato.

Abstract
Drought stress is a common environmental stress, which adversely affects the yield and quality of crops. Due to its excellent drought tolerance, wild barley from the Middle East region is considered a valuable source for barley improvement. Here, we compared the growth rate, stomatal regulation and capacity to metabolize reactive oxygen species (ROS) of two barley cultivars and one wild barley accession. The results indicated the wild barley EC_S1 showed a more significant decline in stomatal aperture and less ROS production. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that EC_S1 has slower transcriptional regulation (5,050 DEGs) in the early stage of drought stress (14 days) than Baudin (7,022 DEGs) and Tadmor (6,090 DEGs). In addition, 30 hub genes, including nine known drought-related genes were identified by WGCNA analysis. Then, we cloned a novel bZIP transcription factor, HvbZIP21, from EC_S1. HvbZIP21 was subcellularly targeted to the nucleus. Overexpression of HvbZIP21 in Arabidopsis enhanced drought tolerance due to increasing activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities as well as glutathione content. Silencing of HvbZIP21 in EC_S1 suppressed drought tolerance in BSMV:HvbZIP21-inoculated plants. Taken together, our findings suggest that HvbZIP21 play a critical role in drought tolerance by manipulating ROS scavenging.

Abstract
Purpose To determine associations between thermal responses, medical events, performance, heat acclimation and health status during a World Athletics Championships in hot-humid conditions. Methods From 305 marathon and race-walk starters, 83 completed a preparticipation questionnaire on health and acclimation. Core (Tcore; ingestible pill) and skin (Tskin; thermal camera) temperatures were measured in-competition in 56 and 107 athletes, respectively. 70 in-race medical events were analysed retrospectively. Performance (% personal best) and did not finish (DNF) were extracted from official results. Results Peak Tcore during competition reached 39.6°C±0.6°C (maximum 41.1°C). Tskin decreased from 32.2°C±1.3°C to 31.0°C±1.4°C during the races (p<0.001). Tcore was not related to DNF (25% of starters) or medical events (p≥0.150), whereas Tskin, Tskin rate of decrease and Tcore-to-Tskin gradient were (p≤0.029). A third of the athletes reported symptoms in the 10 days preceding the event, mainly insomnia, diarrhoea and stomach pain, with diarrhoea (9% of athletes) increasing the risk of in-race medical events (71% vs 17%, p<0.001). Athletes (63%) who performed 5–30 days heat acclimation before the competition: ranked better (18±13 vs 28±13, p=0.009), displayed a lower peak Tcore (39.4°C±0.4°C vs 39.8°C±0.7°C, p=0.044) and larger in-race decrease in Tskin (−1.4°C±1.0°C vs −0.9°C±1.2°C, p=0.060), than non-acclimated athletes. Although not significant, they also showed lower DNF (19% vs 30%, p=0.273) and medical events (19% vs 32%, p=0.179). Conclusion Tskin, Tskin rate of decrease and Tcore-to-Tskin gradient were important indicators of heat tolerance. While heat-acclimated athletes ranked better, recent diarrhoea represented a significant risk factor for DNF and in-race medical events.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Salinity is one of the most important problems that adversely affect crops growth, productivity and quality worldwide. Salt Overly Sensitive 1 (SOS1) gene family plays vital roles in plant response to salt stress. Herein, we report the identification of the SOS family in wheat and the exploration of the expression profiles of SOSs under salt stress. Complete genome sequences of T. aestivum were downloaded from Ensembl plant database. Conservation and divergence of TaSOS1 family were conducted by using phylogenetic tree, gene structure and synteny distribution analysis. Expression profiles of TaSOS1s were obtained based on transcriptome and qRT-PCR analysis. Totally, 119 TaSOS1 proteins in wheat were identified at the genome-wide level and classified into three groups. Six motifs were conserved in TaSOS1 gene family. Moreover, 25 TaSOS1 genes had three copies distributing in three sub-genomes (A, B and D). A total of 32, 28 and 29 TaSOS1 genes were located on the sub-genomes A, B and D, respectively. Moreover, there were 19, 12, 6, 7, 28, 5 and 12 genes located on the three homologous of chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, respectively. Two genes were mapped to unattributed scaffolds. The duplication events analysis indicated that tandem repeats contributed to the expansion of the SOS1 family in wheat. Collinearity analysis demonstrated that segmental duplications play an important role in the expansion of SOS1 members. Chromosome 7, 5, 3, and 2 showed collinear relationship. Tissue specific expression pattern analysis revealed that 41 TaSOS1 genes expressed in various tissues, such as root, shoot, leaf, spike and grain. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that 28 and 26 genes were up- and down-regulated under salinity stress, respectively, of which 18 genes were further confirmed by RT-qPCR. The plants with high expression level of these genes displayed higher tolerance to salinity stress, stronger root system, higher Fv/Fm value and water potential. The results could be helpful for further elucidating the molecular mechanism of TaSOS1 related to salt tolerance in wheat and provide a toolkit for improving the salinity tolerance of wheat. Abstract
Purpose To characterise hydration, cooling, body mass loss, and core (Tcore) and skin (Tsk) temperatures during World Athletics Championships in hot-humid conditions. Methods Marathon and race-walk (20 km and 50 km) athletes (n=83, 36 women) completed a pre-race questionnaire. Pre-race and post-race body weight (n=74), Tcore (n=56) and Tsk (n=49; thermography) were measured. Results Most athletes (93%) had a pre-planned drinking strategy (electrolytes (83%), carbohydrates (81%)) while ice slurry was less common (11%; p<0.001). More men than women relied on electrolytes and carbohydrates (91%–93% vs 67%–72%, p≤0.029). Drinking strategies were based on personal experience (91%) rather than external sources (p<0.001). Most athletes (80%) planned pre-cooling (ice vests (53%), cold towels (45%), neck collars (21%) and ice slurry (21%)) and/or mid-cooling (93%; head/face dousing (65%) and cold water ingestion (52%)). Menthol usage was negligible (1%–2%). Pre-race Tcore was lower in athletes using ice vests (37.5°C±0.4°C vs 37.8°C±0.3°C, p=0.024). Tcore (pre-race 37.7°C±0.3°C, post-race 39.6°C±0.6°C) was independent of event, ranking or performance (p≥0.225). Pre-race Tsk was correlated with faster race completion (r=0.32, p=0.046) and was higher in non-finishers (did not finish (DNF); 33.8°C±0.9°C vs 32.6°C±1.4°C, p=0.017). Body mass loss was higher in men than women (−2.8±1.5% vs −1.3±1.6%, p<0.001), although not associated with performance. Conclusion Most athletes’ hydration strategies were pre-planned based on personal experience. Ice vests were the most adopted pre-cooling strategy and the only one minimising Tcore, suggesting that event organisers should be cognisant of logistics (ie, freezers). Dehydration was moderate and unrelated to performance. Pre-race Tsk was related to performance and DNF, suggesting that Tsk modulation should be incorporated into pre-race strategies.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Freezing stress is a serious environmental factor that obstructs plant development. The root endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica has proved to be effective to confer abiotic stress tolerance to host plants. To investigate how P. indica improves freezing tolerance, we compared the expression profiles of P. indica-colonized and uncolonized Arabidopsis seedlings either exposed to freezing stress or not. Nearly 24 million (93.5%) reads were aligned on the Arabidopsis genome. 634 genes were differentially expressed between colonized and uncolonized Arabidopsis exposed to freezing stress. Interestingly, 193 Arabidopsis genes did not respond to freezing stress but were up-regulated by P. indica under freezing stress. Freezing stress-responsive genes encoded various members of the WRKY, ERF, bHLH, HSF, MYB and NAC transcription factor families. The qRT-PCR analyses confirmed the high-throughput sequencing results for 28 genes. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that the fungus mainly controls genes for freezing-stress related proteins involved in lipid and ion transport, metabolism pathways and phytohormone signaling. Our findings identified novel target genes of P. indica in freezing-stress exposed plants and highlight the benefits of the endophyte for plants exposed to a less investigated environmental threat. Abstract
Leaf-vegetable sweetpotato is an important cash crop that is of high nutritional value. Cuttage is the most convenient method for large-scale propagation. However, the rate and number of adventitious roots (ARs) formation vary significantly among different cultivar cuttings. In this study, two varieties, NC1 and FC13-14, were used to compare the rate of ARs formation. The cumulative results of root morphology showed that in NC1 total root length, total root surface area, total root volume, and root tips were 3.7, 3.5, 3.2, and 2.4 times greater, respectively, than those of FC13-14 at 7 d, indicating that the ARs formation and growth were faster in NC1. In addition, the biomass of aboveground and underground parts in NC1 was 3.6 and 1.3 times more, respectively, than that of FC13-14 at 7 d after cutting, suggesting that the rapid ARs formation rate contributed to the growth and yield of stems and leaves. The analysis of plant water potential showed that NC1 exhibiting higher water potential prevented leaf wilting. Gene expression levels of 22 root-related genes revealed differential expression during different developmental periods. Interestingly, YUCCA family genes had elevated transcript abundance at 0, 12, 24, and 36 h. Moreover, analysis of hormones including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), ethylene (ETH), abscisic acid (ABA), brassinolide (BR), jasmonic acid (JA), gibberellin (GA), and cytokinin (CTK) revealed varied contents during different developmental stages. Cumulative evidence demonstrated that gene expression profiles and hormone content of IAA, ETH, and BR were significantly higher in NC1 roots than in FC13-14 roots following all time periods, while the amount of JA increased and was higher in FC13-14 than in NC1 from 0 to 72 h. This indicates that IAA, BR, and ETH play positive roles and JA has a negative effect on ARs formation. Moreover, ETH takes effect earlier than BR, while IAA and JA have functions throughout the whole process. The findings above were validated by the application of exogenous hormones and hormone synthesis inhibitors. This study reveals the preliminary regulation of ARs formation in leaf-vegetable sweetpotato cuttings and thus contributes to further clarification of the molecular mechanism of multiple hormone interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While, at its inception in 1993, the health care system in Colombia was publicized as a paradigm to be copied across the developing world, numerous problems in its implementation have led to, what is now, an inefficient and crisis-ridden health system. Furthermore, as a result of inappropriate tools to measure the quality of the health service providers, several corruption scandals have arisen in the country. This study attempts to tackle this situation by proposing a strategy for the quality assessment of the health service providers (Entidades Promotoras de Salud, EPS) in the Colombian health system. In particular, as a case study, the quality of the treatment of stomach cancer is analyzed. METHODS The study uses two complementary techniques to address the problem. These techniques are applied based on data of the treatment of gastric cancer collected on a nation-wide scale by the Colombian Ministry of Health and Welfare. First, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Index (MI) are used to establish the most efficient EPS's within the system, according to indicators such as opportunity indicators. Second, sequential clustering algorithm, related to process mining a field of data mining, is used to determine the medical history of all patients and to construct typical care pathways of the patients belonging to efficient and inefficient EPS's. Lastly, efforts are made to identify traits and differences between efficient and inefficient EPS's. RESULTS Efficient and inefficient EPS were identified for the years 2010 and 2011. Additionally, a Malmquist Index was used to calculate the relative changes in the efficiency of the health providers. Using these efficiency rates, the typical treatment path of patients with gastric cancer was found for two EPSs: one efficient and another inefficient. Finally, the typical traits of the care pathways were established. CONCLUSIONS Combining DEA and process mining proved to be a powerful approach understanding the problem and gaining valuable insight into the inner workings of the Colombian Health System, especially in terms of the treatment process performed by health care providers in critical illnesses such as cancer. However, no sufficiently compelling results were found to establish the contribution of such a combination to evaluate the quality in the delivery of health services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to describe professional soccer players' perceptions towards injuries, physical recovery and the effect of surface related factors on injury resulting from soccer participation on 3rd generation artificial turf (FT) compared to natural grass (NG). METHODS Information was collected through a questionnaire that was completed by 99 professional soccer players from 6 teams competing in Major League Soccer (MLS) during the 2011 season. RESULTS The majority (93% and 95%) of the players reported that playing surface type and quality influenced the risk of sustaining an injury. Players believed that playing and training on FT increased the risk of sustaining a non-contact injury as opposed to a contact injury. The players identified three surface related risk factors on FT, which they related to injuries and greater recovery times: 1) Greater surface stiffness 2) Greater surface friction 3) Larger metabolic cost to playing on artificial grounds. Overall, 94% of the players chose FT as the surface most likely to increase the risk of sustaining an injury. CONCLUSIONS Players believe that the risk of injury differs according to surface type, and that FT is associated with an increased risk of non-contact injury. Future studies should be designed prospectively to systematically track the perceptions of groups of professional players training and competing on FT and NG.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to compare the mechanical impact and the corresponding physiological responses of 4 different and often practically applied resistance training methods (RTMs). Ten healthy male subjects (27.3 ± 3.2 years) experienced in resistance training performed 1 exhausting set of bench press exercise until exhaustion for each of the following RTMs: strength endurance (SE), fast force endurance (FFE), hypertrophy (HYP), and maximum strength (MAX). The RTMs were defined by different lifting masses and different temporal distributions of the contraction modes per repetition. Mean concentric power (P), total concentric work (W), and exercise time (EXTIME) were determined. Oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2) was measured during exercise and for 30 minutes postexercise. Mean V[Combining Dot Above]O2, volume of consumed O2, and excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) were calculated over 30 minutes of recovery. Maximum blood lactate concentration (LAmax) was also determined postexercise. The P was significantly higher (p < 0.01) for FFE and MAX compared with that for SE and HYP. The W was significantly higher for FFE than for all other RTMs (p < 0.01), and it was also lower for SE than for MAX (p < 0.05). EXTIME for SE was significantly higher (p < 0.01) than for all other RTMs, whereas EXTIME for MAX was significantly lower (p < 0.01) than for all other RTMs. Mean V[Combining Dot Above]O2 was significantly higher during FFE than during all other RTMs (p < 0.01). Consumed O2 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) during SE than for HYP and MAX, and it was also significantly higher for FFE and HYP compared with MAX (p < 0.05). The LAmax was significantly higher after FFE than after MAX (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in EPOC between all RTMs. The results indicate that FFE and MAX are adequate to train muscular power despite the discrepancy in the external load. Because FFE performance achieves the highest amount in mechanical work, it may also elicit the highest total energy expenditure. The FFE challenges aerobic metabolism most and SE enables the longest EXTIME, indicating both are appropriate to enhance aerobic muscular capacities. The EPOC and LA values may indicate that energy needs covered by anaerobic metabolism are not higher during HYP and MAX compared with the RTM of lower external load.

Ten resistance-trained healthy male subjects performed 1 set of resistance exercise each at 55%, 70%, and 85% of 1 repetition maximum for as many repetitions as possible and in 4 training modes: 4-1-4-1 (4 s concentric, 1 s isometric, 4 s eccentric, and 1 s isometric successive actions), 2-1-2-1, 1-1-1-1, and explosive (maximum velocity concentric). Mean concentric power and total concentric work were determined. Oxygen uptake (V̇O2) was measured during exercise and for 30 min post exercise. Total volume of consumed oxygen (O2 consumed) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) were calculated. Maximum blood lactate concentration (LAmax) was also determined. V̇O2 exhibited a linear dependency on mean concentric power. Mean concentric power did not have a detectable effect on EPOC and LAmax. An augmentation of total concentric work resulted in significant linear increase of O2 consumed and EPOC. Total concentric work caused a significant increase in LAmax. In general, a higher mechanical load induced a larger physiological response. An increase in mean concentric power elicited higher aerobic energy turnover rates. However, a higher extent of total concentric work augments total energy cost covered by oxidative and (or) glycolytic pathways.

Abstract
<p style="text-align: justify;">Se aplica un programa de economía de fichas para modificar algunos comportamientos disruptivos de un niño. Se pretende decrementar el contestar de manera inadecuada, así como hacer pataletas y propiciar la ocurrencia del seguimiento de instrucciones relacionadas con conductas como arreglar la cama, recoger y organizar los juguetes, recoger y organizar la ropa, hacer sus deberes escolares. Se hace una profunda revisión de la aplicación del programa de Economía de Fichas en diversos campos y problemas de conducta. Siguiendo un diseño ABA, los resultados confirman el cambio de comportamiento y logran un mejor ajuste de la conducta del niño en la escuela y el ambiente familiar. Se hace un análisis desde algunos principios de la economía conductual.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Palabras clave: </strong>economía de fichas, modificación de conducta, reforzamiento, equilibrio económico, conductas deseables, conductas indeseables.</p>
