Abstract
As a reactive species, the red deer is sensitive to both negative exogenous and endogenous stimuli. An intensive hunting period may have a particularly negative impact on game animals. The aim of this study was to determine the plasma cortisol level and biochemical parameters in 25 wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) harvested during stalking hunts in correlation with the sex and age of the animals. The mean cortisol concentrations in the stags and hinds analyzed in this study were similar (20.2 and 21.5 ng/mL, respectively). Higher HDL cholesterol values were found in the blood of the hinds than in stags (p < 0.05). Similarly, the mean levels of LDL cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase, and alanine aminotransferase were higher by 21%, 16%, and 42%, respectively, in the blood of the hinds. In contrast, the levels of alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and aspartate aminotransferase were higher in the stags (by 30%, 49%, and 36%, respectively). There was a negative correlation of the cortisol concentration with urea and bilirubin and a positive correlation between cortisol and aspartate aminotransferase in the stags (p < 0.05). In turn, a negative correlation was found between the cortisol and urea levels in the hinds (p < 0.05). In summary, the stress caused by stalking hunts and the characteristic behavior of red deer during the mating season had an impact on chosen biochemical parameters. The increased concentration of cortisol resulted in a decrease in the carcass mass, which may lead to the deterioration of the physical condition of animals on hunting grounds.

Abstract
(1) Background: The number of horses suffering from chronic respiratory diseases, resembling human asthma, is increasing but there is still a lack of reliable and accurate methods to detect these disorders. Numerous studies have found elevated plasma concentrations of one of the myokines, namely, myostatin (MSTN), in people suffering from severe asthma. MSTN normally inhibits myoblast proliferation and differentiation through autocrine or paracrine signals. Therefore, given the pathogenesis of asthma, we hypothesize that MSTN could be a useful biomarker of equine asthma. Thus, this study aimed to compare the concentration of MSTN in the blood plasma of fully healthy and asthmatic horses. (2) Methods: A total of 61 horses were clinically examined to confirm or exclude the occurrence of equine asthma, including bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid cytology performed on 49 horses. This study included three groups of horses, two of which were clinically healthy, and one of which was asthmatic. (3) Results: The mean circulatory MSTN concentration determined using the ELISA method in asthmatic horses was significantly higher than that in clinically healthy young Thoroughbred racehorses (p < 0.05), but it did not differ as compared to the group of healthy, adult leisure horses. (4) Conclusions: The obtained results did not unambiguously support our original hypothesis that MSTM may be a reliable marker for the early diagnosis of equine asthma. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the plasma MSTN concentration in equine asthma patients, and therefore further studies are needed to confirm our novel findings.

Abstract
Monitoring estrogens, progestogens, and relaxin plasma concentration can be important for determining pregnancies at risk of failure in mares. However, significant breed-related differences in values of reproductive hormones are known, and data concerning coldblooded (CB) mares are missing. The aim of the study was to determine and compare serum relaxin, estrone sulphate (E1S), estradiol-17β (E2), and progestogens concentration in pregnant CB and hot-blood (HB) mares during the second half of gestation. Blood samples obtained from 94 healthy mares in the second half of gestation with known mating dates were analyzed. Samples were collected from 36 CB mares aged from 3 to 16 years and 58 HB mares aged from 4 to 17 years. The hormone concentrations were measured using immunoenzymatic equine species-specific commercial kits. The serum relaxin concentration was almost three times lower in CB, whereas E1S and E2 almost twice as low, as compared to HB mares (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the extremely low concentration of relaxin in CB mares could be one reason for the increased amounts of difficult parturition requiring veterinary intervention noted in these breeds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a species particularly reactive to all kinds of negative stimuli. Hunting activity is one of the most potent stressors that disturbs the welfare of wild animals. During stress, various endocrine responses are elicited to improve the physical performance of the affected individual. A commonly assessed hormone for overcoming stressful situations is cortisol (CORT). In this study, plasma CORT levels in roe deer were assessed during the season of the most intense stalking hunts in Poland (summer vs. late autumn), the sex of the harvested animals (males vs. females), and age of harvest animal. In addition, the health status of the roe doe was evaluated on the basis of selected indices of blood chemistry, which could be associated with circulating cortisol levels. RESULTS The mean cortisol levels were 58.066 ng/ml in the male group (summer) and 27.694 ng/ml in the female group (late autumn). Higher CORT levels were associated with a significantly lower of total cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase, and uric acid (p < 0.05). Moreover, the mean concentration of uric acid was negatively correlated with the level of CORT in the male and female groups (p < 0.05). Together with the increase in mean CORT level, the HDL cholesterol of all the tested animals increased significantly (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Higher CORT in males during the summer than in females during the late autumn were most likely due to the arousal with the mating season. The level of CORT increased with the animals' age. Uric acid and age are both predictors of roe deer's serum CORT level.

Abstract
Tryptophan (Trp) is an essential amino acid which metabolises via the kynurenine pathway to generate a number of bioactive substances referred to as kynurenines. Among those are 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HKyn) and quinolinic acid, which are neurotoxic, as well as kynurenic acid (Kyna) and xanthurenic acid (XA), which, similarly to nicotinamide (NAm), show neuroprotective and anti-depressive effects. Routine exercise is known to modulate Trp metabolism in skeletal muscle and is thus believed to reduce the risk of depressive states in humans and laboratory animals. Analogously, it was hypothesised that exercise can influence Trp metabolism in horses as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two different types of exercise on Trp metabolism in horses of the same breed. A total of 32 purebred Arabian horses were involved in the study. The 22 three-year-old racehorses were subjected to short-time intense exercise. Ten other horses were made to perform endurance competitions at a distance of 80 km. Blood samples were collected at rest and following the end of the exercise period. Plasma concentrations of Trp, kynurenine (Kyn), Kyna, 3-HKyn, XA and NAm were determined using Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionisation-Tandem Mass Spectrometry. Short-time intense exercise led to an increase in plasma concentrations of Kyn, Kyna and XA. The endurance effort induced an increase in Kyna and a decrease in Trp and NAm levels. Both types of exercise, short-time intensive exercise and endurance exercise induced an increase in Trp metabolites, especially Kyna, and did not induce an increase in Trp level. Thus, from a pathophysiological perspective of the kynurenine pathway's influence on mental state, both types of exercise induced beneficial effects in horses.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the relationship between the plasma cortisol level and bodyweight and antler size in farmed male fallow deer (Dama dama) of various ages. The study involved 33 animals divided into three age groups: one year old, three years old, and older. Their bodyweight was measured and blood samples were taken twice a year during antler growth (May) and before the rut (September). Whole antlers were collected in September to measure their length and weight. The plasma cortisol concentration was determined with an immunoenzymatic method. The correlations between cortisol level and bodyweight were significant and positive in both May and September (P ≤0.05). There was a negative correlation between weight gain and change in cortisol levels (P ≤0.05). Thus, fallow deer with large seasonal changes in cortisol gained less weight from May to September. The results of the present study indicated that calmer animals with lower cortisol fluctuations should be selected for breeding, which would contribute to greater stability of weight gain.

Abstract
Development of the musculoskeletal system occurs, in part, through an impact on regulatory proteins, such as activin A and decorin. Activin A induces atrophic effects on skeletal muscle, and decorin regulates the formation of connective tissue proteins like collagen and elastin in tendons and ligaments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different intensities of exercise on blood plasma activin A and decorin concentrations in horses. Ten young purebred Arabian horses were subjected to routine training sessions on a racetrack, and another 11 adult horses of the same breed participated in endurance rides. Race horses were examined during gallop tests over a distance of 1200 m and endurance horses at distances from 20 to 80 km. Blood samples were collected at rest and after exercise to determine plasma concentrations of activin A, decorin and cortisol. Despite differences in the intensity of exercise, the plasma decorin concentration remained unchanged, and activin A tended to decrease in endurance horses only. The exercise-induced changes in plasma activin A concentrations correlated with the covered distance (r = -0.43; P < .05), but not with the changes in cortisol values. Further studies are needed to confirm the usefulness of plasma activin A as a potential indicator of a horse's endurance performance.

Abstract
Simple Summary Irisin and myostatin are regulatory proteins produced by muscle cells. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of exercise on plasma irisin and myostatin concentrations in horses in different types of training (speed versus endurance). To find out, we tested 20 Arabian horses, submitted to the two different equestrian disciplines, and consequently different training regimes. The first group of horses realized a short-term, high-speed bout of exercise whereas the second group of horses were submitted to long-lasting, endurance effort. The obtained results showed that the single bout of exercise induced an increase in plasma myostatin concentration. Plasma irisin level decreased during the race season in racehorses. This means that irisin and myostatin may play a regulatory role in the maintenance of the energy balance processes. Abstract Skeletal muscle is considered to be the largest endocrine organ determining the maintenance of energy homeostasis. Adaptive changes in skeletal muscles in response to physical exercise influence the production as well as secretion of myokines, which are bioactive factors that play a crucial role in energy expenditure processes. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of two different types of exercise on the circulating level of two of these, myostatin and irisin, in trained horses. Twenty purebred Arabian horses were involved in the study: 10 three-year-old horses trained on the racetrack and 10 endurance horses aged 7.4 ± 1.9 years. The horses from both groups were regularly trained throughout the entire season, during which they also participated in Polish National competitions. To assess the influence of the training sessions on plasma myostatin and irisin concentrations, blood samples taken at rest and 30 min after the end of exercise were analyzed. In the studied horses, the single bout of exercise did not influence plasma irisin but induced an increase in plasma myostatin concentration. In racehorses, plasma irisin concentration decreased with the length of the training season. Plasma myostatin was higher in endurance horses than in three-year-old racehorses. Lack of exercise-induced fluctuation in circulating irisin in studied horses suggests that myostatin released in response to exercise provides a negative feedback signal to irisin release.

Abstract
This study focused on analyzing the effects of inclusion of modern hybrid rye to corn-wheat diet on mechanical properties of bones and tendons. A total of 224 broiler chickens were fed a diet without rye inclusion or a diet containing 15% of hybrid rye cv. Brasetto. The diets were either unsupplemented or supplemented with xylanase (minimum activity 1000 FXU/g, dose 200 mg/kg of feed). Each dietary group consisted of 56 birds. On day 42, selected chickens (n = 7 from each group) were slaughtered. Tibia were analyzed for mineralization, geometry, and biomechanical characteristics of bone mid-diaphysis. The mechanical properties of digital flexor III tendon were also assessed. Bone mineral density and bone ash percentage did not differ when both diets were given without xylanase. Enzyme supplementation increased bone mineral density (P < 0.01) in both dietary groups, whereas bone ash percentage (P < 0.01) increased only for corn-wheat diet. Rye inclusion had no effect on bone mid-shaft geometrical traits related to tibia weight-bearing capacity (cross-sectional area, cortical index, and mean relative wall thickness). Performed bending test showed no effect of hybrid rye inclusion on bone mechanical endurance. When xylanase was supplemented, bone length (P < 0.01) and weight (P < 0.05) decreased, whereas yield load (P < 0.01), stiffness (P < 0.05), Young modulus (P < 0.05), elastics stress (P < 0.01), and ultimate stress (P < 0.01) increased, irrespective of rye presence. The tendon tensile strain test showed that in corn-wheat diet enzyme supplementation positively influenced rupture force (P < 0.05) and tendon stiffness (P < 0.01). Xylanase supplementation increased the value of energy required to tendon rupture, irrespective of rye inclusion (P < 0.05). Study showed that modern hybrid rye varieties can be introduced to corn-wheat diets of broiler chickens in the aspect of animal welfare related to the development and homeostasis of musculoskeletal system, irrespective of xylanase supplementation. The enzyme addition positively affected biomechanical properties of bones and tendons.

Abstract
Physical effort is one of the key aspects of keeping horses in good condition. The condition of the animal is reflected by multiple blood parameters. The newly discovered cytokine-apelin can pose one of them, however, so far, has not been studied in the horse population. Apelin is produced by adipocytes and myocytes and plays an important role in the energy metabolism of the body through the influence, for example, on the process of adipogenesis and lipolysis. The aim of this study was to investigate if physical effort of various intensity affects the plasma concentration of apelin in horses. The study involved 20 purebred Arabian horses divided into two groups. The first group included 10 race horses, aged 3 years, and second group included 10 horses aged from 6 to 12 years, used in endurance rides. Blood samples were collected from each horse at rest and after exercise. The concentrations of apelin, lactic acid, cortisol, uric acid (UA), triacylglycerols, total plasma protein, and glucose were determined in plasma samples. Race training sessions induced significant decreases in plasma apelin concentrations (P < .05). In endurance horses, significant correlations were found only between exercise-induced changes of apelin and cortisol (r = 0.55) and apelin and UA (r = 0.67) concentrations. In conclusion, the concentration of apelin in equine plasma decreases in response to short-time exercise unlike endurance exercise. Blood plasma apelin concentration determined at rest is lower in long-time regularly trained horses than in the ones at the beginning of their training process.

Abstract
1. The aim of study was to investigate whether the impact of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the histological structure of the intestine, innervation of the small intestine wall, and basal biochemical serum parameters in Japanese quail was sex dependent. 2. One-day-old healthy male and female Japanese quail were fed either a basal diet containing no yeast (control group) or the basal diet plus 1.5% (15 g/kg of diet) of yeast (S. cerevisiae inactivated by drying). Samples from the duodenum and jejunum were taken from each bird at the age of 42 days. Blood samples were collected at this age and the concentrations of glucose, total protein, creatinine, uric acid, lipid profile (total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL) and triacylglycerols (TG)), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), amylase (AMY), calcium, phosphorus and iron were determined. 3. Female quail fed diets supplemented with yeast had significantly lower total cholesterol and amylase activity than the control females. The concentration of HDL was higher in the male quail than in the females, irrespective of the treatment. An opposite effect was observed in LDL. The diet treatments influenced the activity of AspAT, which was significantly less in the male quail fed diets with 1.5% yeast. 4. Supplementation with S. cerevisiae increased the myenteron, submucosa and mucosa thickness, villus length and thickness and size of absorptive surface, while the number of villi and enterocytes were decreased in the duodenum in males. Female quail showed an increased absorptive surface in the jejunum. The Meissner (submucosal) plexuses were influenced by the feeding and sex to a greater extent than the Auerbach plexus (in the muscularis propria). 5. The results demonstrated that S. cerevisiae (1.5%) in the diet caused significant positive effects in Japanese quail, exerting an effect on the morphology of the small intestine in a sex-dependent manner.

Abstract
It seems that faba bean (FB) seeds could be a good protein-energy component in animal feed, but the presence of anti-nutritional substances limits their use as a substitute of soybean meal. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of different concentrations of raw, low-tannin, FB seeds on the gut-bone axis in Ross 308 broilers. One-day old chickens were randomly subjected to one of the 3 dietary treatments: the control group was fed standard diet based on soybean meal and without FB seeds, and two groups were fed 8%/15% and 16%/22% of raw low-tannin FB seeds in the starter and grower, respectively. On the 35th day, hematological and serum biochemical analyses as well histomorphometry of the small intestine and liver tissue and bone mechanical tests were performed. The diet type had no effect on the body weight gain and feed conversion ratio. However, the basal intestinal structures were significantly reduced in birds fed the lower concentration of FB. The enlargement of nerve plexuses was dependent on the concentration used in the diet and, additionally, on the kind of plexus and location in the intestinal tract. The liver was characterized by an increase in non-hepatocytes. There was no influence of the low-tannin FB seeds on most of the analyzed serum parameters in the 35-day-old broiler chickens, except the decreased concentration of total cholesterol and Ca in both experimental groups, triglycerides in group I, and P and uric acid in group II. Furthermore, the increasing concentration of the dietary low-tannin FB did not influence the activities of AspAT (except the group fed the higher amount of FB), ALAT, and LDH. The broiler chickens had no visible leg lesions and no problem in the locomotor function, but the tibiae were lighter mainly in birds fed the higher concentration of FB seeds. Geometric analysis revealed reduction of the cross section area and wall thickness, indicating a decline in the bone midshaft, which influenced the densitometric parameters and the results of mechanical tests. In conclusion, the dietary inclusion of raw low-tannin FB seeds had no negative effects on broiler growth, but disturbed the intestine structure and tibia characteristics. Therefore, all these negative effects necessitate additional examinations before inclusion of raw low-tannin FB seed into poultry diet.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of relaxing massage on the heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in young racehorses during their first racing season. In the study, 72 Purebred Arabian racehorses were included. The study was implemented during the full race season. The horses from control and experimental groups were included in regular race training 6 days a week. The horses from the experimental group were additionally subject to the relaxing massage 3 days a week during the whole study. HR and HRV were assumed as indicators of the emotional state of the horses. The measurements were taken six times, every 4-5 weeks. The HRV parameters were measured at rest, during grooming and saddling the horse and during warm-up walking under a rider. The changes of the parameters throughout the season suggest that the relaxing massage may be effectively used to make the racehorses more relaxed and calm. Moreover, the horses from the experimental group had better race performance records.

Abstract
Although the risk of the eventual development of tardive dyskinesia and other persistent adverse effects of neuroleptics is high, among adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, neuroleptics may ameliorate dyskinesias, aggression, and inattention. The effects of traditional neuroleptics on a comparable population of children and adolescents with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities are unknown. The objective of this study was to develop an assessment battery to describe the effects of traditional neuroleptics on the behavior and movements of a small sample of children and adolescents with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. 13 children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years attending a developmental disabilities clinic were evaluated utilizing a Movement Assessment Battery to measure behavior and motions. Five subjects took traditional neuroleptic medications. Trained raters can reliably assess the movements and behaviors of children and adolescents with multiple handicaps. Children and adolescents with developmental disabilities may be vulnerable to experience functional impairment and akathisia, tics, and other dyskinesias when administered traditional neuroleptic medications.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between plasma leptin and lipid levels in breeding mares and their newborn foals. The study was conducted on 17 Polish cold-blood mares and their newborn foals. The mares were divided into two groups, according to the course of delivery. These groups were seven mares which had a normal delivery and 10 mares which had required veterinary intervention during their delivery. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of both the mares and their foals. The blood samples were taken within 30 min after delivery, as well as on four successive mornings directly afterwards. In obtained plasma samples, the leptin, triacylglycerols (TG) and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations were measured. The leptin and TG levels in the plasma sampled on the day of delivery and the two following days were significantly higher in mares which received veterinary intervention during the delivery, when compared to the results obtained from the plasma of mares which had normal delivery. The results obtained from foals did not show any statistical differences. In conclusion, the conducted tests have shown that post-parturient hyperlipidemia and hyperleptinemia in mares did not influence the lipid status and plasma leptin level in newborn foals.

Abstract
For over forty years, Bellevue Hospital's Therapeutic Nursery Program has been addressing the emotional problems of New York City preschoolers, aged two to five years, with the help of their families and other caregivers. Typical psychiatric disorders treated in the Therapeutic Nursery Program include anxiety disorders (separation anxiety, generalized anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder), disruptive behavior disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder), mood disorders, adjustment disorders and attachment disorders.We have found that group psychotherapy provides a safe and secure place where, through psychodynamic intervention, children can repair dysfunctional relationships, identify and express a full range of emotions, resolve cultural differences and develop age appropriate skills.Our Therapeutic Nursery Program employs a wide range of additional treatment modalities in order to reach the treatment goals. Individual or family sessions, as well as meetings with teachers and social service workers, are scheduled to address issues.We have also found that dyadic or sibling work is often needed to stop or reverse the development of inappropriate family relationships.One of our indications of a successful intervention is that either during or after their participation in the Therapeutic Nursery, children return to community-based daycare centers and preschools. We have also found that via participation in the Therapeutic Nursery program, families have opportunities to strengthen their ability to nurture their children, share successful parenting with other families and build pleasurable experiences with their children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Surgical treatment of oral cavity neoplasms consists of the resection of tumor surrounded by a healthy tissue margin. This study is aimed at an objective, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of breathing disturbances and dyspnoea after the resection of oral cavity structures, throat structures and muscles of the neck. For the purpose of evaluating the above-mentioned disturbances an attempt was made to carry out pulse oximetry examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS We have examined 50 persons after the resection of oral cavity structures, throat structures and muscles of the neck in Maxillofacial Clinic of Pomeranian Medical Academy in Szczecin. The examinations were performed by pulse oximetry set during sleep before and after operations. The patients were divided into three groups according to the type of removed structures which included: lateral part of the mandible; mental part of the mandible; part of the tongue. RESULTS The results of examinations obtained gave rise results as: pulse oximetry examination revealed an increased incidence of blood desaturation episodes and a decrease in minimum saturation level. CONCLUSIONS Surgical treatment of oral cavity neoplasms leads to breathing disturbances. Apnoea episodes cause a drop in the arterial blood saturation with oxygen.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The focus of this paper is the evaluation of usability of various nose skin reconstruction methods applied after removal of a skin cancer in the Teaching Hospital of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Pomeranian Academy of Medicine in Szczecin in 1975-2004. MATERIAL AND METHODS The research material consisted of 285 patients who underwent a surgical treatment of nose skin cancers located in various skin areas. In 67 cases, the tumour was situated on a nostril flare, in 42--on the nose tip, in 98--on the bridge and in 68--on one of its sides, most frequently, near the corner of the eye. Said tumours often covered more than one of the above-mentioned areas or even all of them. Reconstruction planning and performance was an integral part of the surgical treatment. The tumour amputation was preceded by an assessment of the quantity and quality of tissues necessary for filling in the lesions. Lesions located on the nose surface were covered by free skin grafts. In the case of nostril flare tumours, they were filled in with grafts composed of skin and cartilaginous tissue from the ear. Lesions including all nose layers were most frequently (in 136 cases) covered with various types of axially vascularised frontal skin flaps i.e. by the middle or temporal part of the frontal flap. In the case of elderly people the nasolabial flaps were used. RESULTS In most cases, both the aesthetic and functional effects were very good. What appeared to be the most difficult reconstruction case was the restoration of the nasal bone structures after their complete amputation. CONCLUSION Due to the thickness, colour and easiness of preparation of the middle frontal flap, it is considered to be the best material for reconstruction of the nose.

Abstract
Morphological and imaging methods of diagnosis and therapy of salivary gland tumors were presented. They have changed in period of thirty years. The accuracy of pretreatment diagnostic methods increased from 40 to 90%. Wrong diagnoses repeated in cases: adenoid cystic carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma and metastases from other organs. Their frequency in our material was 21.2%. Changes in treatment of pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were described. Percentage of 5-years survival was 64% in irradiated after tumor excision all treated. The patient's active participation in functional rehabilitation after facial nerve reconstruction was accentuated.

Abstract
Several bovine, human and porcine endothelial cell lines, bovine fetal gastrointestinal cells (BFGC), Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) and African green monkey kidney (VERO) cells were exposed in vitro to sporozoites of Eimeria bovis. Parasites invaded all cells used and changed their shape to more stumpy forms within 12 h. Sporozoites left their host cells and invaded new ones frequently within the first 12 h post-infection. Further development took place only in bovine cells, although parasites survived in the other cells for at least 3 weeks. Within the non-bovine cells, conspicuously enlarged parasitophorous vacuoles developed in VERO cells and reached a diameter of 15-20 microm. The best development to first generation schizonts with regard both to time required to mature, to schizont size and to merozoite yields was observed in BFGC, followed by bovine umbilical vein and bovine spleen lymphatic endothelial cells. MDBK cells were less suitable. The life cycle was completed (development of oocysts) only occasionally in BFGC. Results are considered under several aspects. Thus, infected VERO cells may represent a suitable tool for studying the parasitophorous vacuole, while infected endothelial cells represent a system quite narrow to the in vivo situation and should allow basic studies on parasite/host cell interactions and BFGC can be used for the mass production of E. bovis first generation merozoites.

Abstract
The study reports the performance of four indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for antibody (AB) detection using microtitre plates which were precoated with native or heat/detergent denatured antigens (AGs) from Trypanosoma congolense (T.c.) and T. vivax (T.v.), and stored for between 1 to 206 days at +37 degrees C. Bovine serum samples were obtained by sequential bleeding of 3-months old T.c.-infected bulls and their uninfected cohorts, as well as by a single bleeding of uninfected adult cattle. The first day of AB detection, and observations on samples after this (defined as estimated ELISA sensitivity), depended on the cut-off value in the specific ELISAs. Cut-off values from pre- and early post-infection samples of individual animals demonstrated a seroconversion in all ELISAs on average after 10-15 days post-infection (dpi). The AB detection was delayed in the T.c. native and denatured AG-based ELISAs using cut-off points from uninfected cohort cattle (16.5 dpi, 19.3 dpi) and the adult cattle population (22.1 dpi, 25.0 dpi). The T.v. AG-based ELISAs however lacked crossreactiviy to T.c. ABs. The estimated sensitivity of each T.c. AG-based ELISA was above 96% throughout, but significantly lower for the T.c. native AG-based ELISA (91.1%) when the adult cattle derived cut-off point was used (p<0.01). The sensitivity of the phase contrast buffy coat technique was similar to the T.c. AG-based ELISAs, but significantly lower when the T.c. denatured AG-based ELISA was used at the adult cattle derived cut-off point (p<0.05). The implications of the results and future research aspects on ELISAs to detect trypanosomal ABs and AGs are discussed.

Abstract
Loading of Eimeria bovis-infected Vero cells with membrane-permeant acetoxymethyl esters (AM-esters) of ion-sensitive dyes provided us with a noninvasive method for investigation of the permeability of the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) and simultaneous measurement of Ca2+ and H+ concentrations in different compartments of the infected cells. The distribution patterns of the cleaved membrane-impermeant dyes argue against the existence of nonselective pores in the PVM. There is also no indication of a parasitophorous duct connecting the vacuolar space with extracellular media. The pH inside the parasitophorous vacuole (PV) was lower than that in the cytoplasm of the host cell or the parasite, whereas the [Ca2+] in these compartments did not differ significantly. In HT29 cells infected with E. separata for 24 h the Ca2+ response to extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was significantly reduced, indicating influences on the host cell's intracellular signaling.

Abstract
Compensatory treatment for oropharyngeal dysphagia includes postural changes and reducing the risk of aspiration. Some of compensatory maneuvers are introduced spontaneously by the ill at first weeks after oral cavity tumour resection. On the basis of roentgenotelevision examination of deglutition in 82 patients we detected mechanisms with intention to minimize swallowing disturbances. Variability of their occurrence and differences in their efficiency should be emphasized, as well as essential synchronization of laryngeal closure with emptying of pharynx and opening upper oesophageal sphincter for swallowing efficiency. The valuation of compensatory maneuvers introduced spontaneously by the ill was defined as an important part of swallowing rehabilitation.

Abstract
A method is described for the excystation and collection of infective sporozoites of Eimeria separata. The procedure uses conditions that resemble the in vivo environment. The first treatment of the oocysts in a 0.4% pepsin/HCl solution alters the oocyst wall, which becomes thinner. The second treatment in a 0.4% trypsin/0.75% taurocholate solution breaks the oocyst wall and sporocysts are released. A third incubation of the oocyst-sporocyst mixture in trypsin-free medium with 0.75% taurocholate and an additive of MgCl2 followed by a final incubation in RPMI medium supplemented with 1% fetal calf serum yields a sporozoite excystation rate of up to 90%.

Abstract
Between years 1996 and 1997, pedunculated parietal bone graft for facial reconstruction after tumor excision was used in 8 patients. The defects comprised one side of maxilla with the orbit bottom, zygomatic bone and the orbit bottom, mandibular ramus, and the whole mandible: in 4, 1, 2, and 1 patient respectively. The reconstruction was done directly after tumor excision in 6 patients and later on in the other 2. The grafts were of full thickness in 6 and of outer table in 2. Functional and cosmetic effects were considered satisfactory in 6 patients. The whole mandible reconstruction ended up with a failure due to infection and tumor recurrence.

Abstract
We present the case of a young man with a diagnosis of a childhood-onset pervasive developmental disorder who developed a progressive neurologic deterioration with persistent catatonia and right hemiparesis. On his initial evaluation approximately three years after the onset of mutism, he manifested right hemiparesis and catalepsy. Two years later, although catalepsy had subsided, motor function had deteriorated so that he could not use his hands to feed or dress himself. Oral-facialbuccal dyskinesia manifested by blepharospasm and grimacing were present constantly during waking hours. Quantitative electroencephalography demonstrated markedly decreased amplitude, a finding associated with catatonia. Left sural nerve biopsy indicated large axon cylinder degeneration. Left deltoid biopsy demonstrated perimysial fibrosis and type II fiber predominance. Although magnetic resonance imaging of the head without contrast was normal, positron emission tomography indicated hypometabolism of the right cerebral and the right cerebellar hemispheres. The patient continues to deteriorate despite a course of 25 electroconvulsive treatments. He continues to manifest criteria for catatonia including motoric immobility, mutism, and peculiarities of voluntary movement such as prominent grimacing. We suspect an inherited neurodegenerative disorder. Since catatonia is a treatable condition frequently associated with medical and neurological diseases, examination for the features of catatonia must be included in the assessment of patients with progressive brain degeneration. This report is an attempt to clarify the traits of a serious variant of progressive brain degeneration.

Abstract
The major objective of this study was to examine the persistence of abnormal quantitative EEG (qEEG) measures over a six month time interval in subjects in strictly supervised drug free residential treatment for crack cocaine dependence. Seventeen subjects were assessed with qEEG at five to 10 days, one month and six months following their last use of cocaine. No significant changes were noted over time in abnormal qEEG measures, which included deficits of absolute and relative power in the delta band and increased relative alpha power. The persistence of qEEG abnormality in crack cocaine withdrawal suggests a persistent neurobiologic alteration resulting from chronic cocaine exposure. The specificity of the qEEG findings is discussed, and an interpretation is suggested with reference to the hypothesis of neural sensitization in cocaine dependence.

Abstract
This study replicates preliminary findings reporting a quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) profile of crack cocaine dependence in abstinence. All subjects (n = 52) met criteria for DMS-III-R cocaine dependence (in the form of crack), and were residing in a drug-free therapeutic community. Baseline QEEG evaluations were conducted at intake (5-10 days after last use of crack, and at follow-up (1 month after last reported use). Previous findings of significant excess of relative alpha power and deficit of absolute and relative delta and theta power were replicated in this expanded group. Abnormalities were greater in anterior than posterior regions, and disturbances in interhemispheric relationships were also observed. Further, QEEG showed little change in the interval between the first and second evaluations. This QEEG profile may reflect persistent alterations in neurotransmission as a possible consequence of chronic cocaine exposure.

Abstract
On the basis of 442 cases that had been subjected to a resection the neck's lymphatic system, we concluded, that metastases of the planoepithelial cancers into neck lymph nodes occurred in No-15.7%, N1-30.6%, N2-60%, N3-75.4%. The radical neck dissection on the tumor side, as well as on the opposite side helped to achieve the most better treatment results than after resection of the lymph nodous suprahyioidei only. The confirm metastases of the cancer into lymph nodous was observed in 18.3%. The surgery was the best way to treat it; 30% of the patients, who were treated in this way lived for a next 5 years.

Abstract
An effect of radiotherapy, in 442 patient presented with epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavity was studied. No significant prolongation of life-span was observed in patients subjected to radiotherapy both prior and after surgical procedure. Reoccurrence of carcinoma was less likely and appeared later in patients treated with radiotherapy than in patients subjected only to surgery.

Abstract
Thirty cranio-maxillofacial fibrous dysplasia patients were treated. There were 21 patients with monostotic and 9 patients with multiple lesions both jaws and bones of the skull. Most of the patients were under forty years of age. The lesions caused facial asymmetry in all patients, in two of them was visual disturbances and orbital dystopia, in one patient was hearing loss. The lesions were evaluated histologically that enabled appropriate diagnosis. The principles of surgical treatment were based on the zones of involvement. Treatment was aimed at correcting functional problems and achieving facial aesthetics. Conservative facial aesthetics. Conservative shaving was made in two patients. Radical excision of the dysplastic bone was made in lower parts of the face. In cases of the mandible and maxilla has been made reconstruction with free bone transplants. Tumors of the base of the skull were excised less radically and reconstruction has been made with alloplastic implants. No recurrence or invasion of the fibrous dysplasia into the grafted bone was seen.

Abstract
Several prognostic parameters of prostatic carcinoma needed to help guide treatment in individual patients are discussed. Tumour volume, nodal and bone metastases, grading, prostate-specific antigen and DNA ploidy have been correlated with prognosis. Recent studies have analysed tumour volume in detail. However, currently there is no single prognostic factor which can predict tumour aggressiveness on an individual patient basis to rationalize decisions. Multivariate analyses are therefore in progress to determine independent prognostic variables.

In an open, nonblind clinical trial, clomipramine reduced adventitious movements and compulsions in five previously medicated prepubertal boys with autistic disorder and severe mental retardation. Poorly adapted rating scales, interrater variability, subject heterogeneity, different treatment histories, and environmental stresses confounded the assessment of treatment effects.

Abstract
Experiences are presented based on the observation and treatment by surgical methods of 360 patients with facial cutaneous carcinoma in a period of 16 years. The group comprised 57% men and 43% women. Over half the patients had the lesions situated on the nose. In the remaining cases the tumour developed on the cheek (19%), temple (11%), eyelids (6%), forehead (5%) and skin of the lips (3%). Particular therapeutic difficulties were encountered in cases of lesions situated in the medial angle of the palpebral fissure. In 3 cases extensive craniofacial resection with orbitectomy was done for advanced malignant lesions. In 71% of cases basal cell carcinoma was the cause, and in 29% spinocellular carcinoma was diagnosed. Metastases to regional lymph nodes removed during the operation were demonstrated in 16 cases, exclusively caused by spinocellular carcinoma. The problem of surgical safety margin and the main problems of reconstructive procedures in surgical treatment of facial cutaneous carcinoma are discussed.

Abstract
On the basis of a study carried out in three teaching departments of maxillofacial surgery the effect was analysed of Solcoseryl dental adherent paste and Linomag in the treatment of acute radiation-induced stomatitis. Both drugs were effective but Solcoseryl was superior to the other drug since it accelerated healing by about 50% and formed a protecting dressing on the inflamed mucosa.

Abstract
After a study in three maxillofacial surgery teaching hospital departments the authors evaluated the usefulness of Solcoseryl dental adhesive paste as compared to Apernyl in the treatment of postextraction alveolitis. Solcoseryl paste was found to shorten the healing period by about 50% in comparison with Apernyl.

Abstract
The authors present the results of functional state examination of the orbicular muscle of the mouth in 28 patients operated by means of Abbe's and Karapandzicz's method because of vermilion border's carcinoma. It has been found that no features of neurogenic damage of the muscle were present in the group of patients operated by means of Karapandzicz's method and the return to its proper function was more frequent. It points out that Karapandzicz's method is less invasive in comparison with Abbe's method.

Abstract
Using a cross-sectional design, we examined the diurnal and circannual variation in platelet 3H-imipramine binding in 33 patients with bipolar affective disorder, 34 patients with unipolar affective disorder and 58 normal controls. There was no evidence for statistically significant diurnal or circannual variation in the binding parameters in any of the diagnostic categories.
