Abstract
Objective: To investigate hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) diagnosis and treatment plan. Methods: 24 cases diagnosed with PEComa clinical manifestations, serum alpha fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199), imaging findings, surgical methods, postoperative hospital stay, pathological results and prognosis were analyzed retrospectively from September 2015 to September 2020. Results: Majority of patients were females (79.2%), aged 41.5±11.4 years. Tumors were predominantly located in the right liver (50.0%). 76.7% of the cases were mostly clinically asymptomatic. AFP, CEA and CA199 indices were all negative. CT mostly showed low density tumor in the plain scan phase, enhanced in the enhancement phase, and enhanced and weakened in portal venous and equilibrium phase (66.7%). MRI manifestations of most tumors were hypointense on T1WI and hyperintense on T2WI (72.7%). B-ultrasound mostly showed hyperechoic mass in the tumor area with punctate vascular shadow (52.9%). Postoperative hospital stay was 9.0±2.4 days for laparoscopic surgery patients (n=13), 13.4±6.3 days for traditional laparotomy (hereinafter referred to as laparotomy, n=10), and 3 days for 1 patient with microwave ablation. All postoperative pathological results were positive for HMB45 and Melan-A. Follow-up results: 21 cases survived normally, with no tumor recurrence in the recent physical examination; two cases had tumor recurrence and they died two and three years after surgery, and one case was lost to follow-up. Conclusion: Hepatic PEComa more commonly occurs in middle-aged women, with no specific features for tumor markers and clinical manifestations. Some imaging findings are specific, so its features can be combined as a basis for diagnosis. Postoperative pathological examination results can confirm the diagnosis. Therefore, surgery remains the initial treatment plan. Microwave ablation and laparoscopic surgery are recommended as the preferred option because of shorter hospital stays and less trauma than open surgery.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic surgery for perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa). Methods: The clinical data of 42 patients with hepatic PEComa diagnosed by pathology in Hunan Provincial People's Hospital from September 2012 to September 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into the endoscopic group and the open group according to surgical methods. Statistical software was used to compare the differences in operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative pathological data and incidence of complications between the two groups. Results: There were 27 cases in the endoscopic group and 15 cases in the open group. In the endoscopic group, there were 5 males and 22 females, aged (40.0±10.4) years. In the open group, there were 5 males and 10 females, aged (44.5±12.6) years. The operative time of the endoscopic group and the open group was (239±156.2) min and (348±103.0) min, and the postoperative hospital stay was (8.2±2.4) d and (13.7±4.9) d, respectively, the endoscopic group was significantly better than the open group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in intraoperative blood loss, tumor benign and malignant, tumor site, tumor diameter, Ki67 index, postoperative complications such as biliary leakage, incision infection and pleural effusion (P>0.05). During the follow-up period of 2-103 months, one case was lost to follow-up, two cases died in the endoscopic group,one case died in the open group. The 5-year overall survival rate (OS) and disease-free survival rate (DFS) were 80.8% and 83.0%, respectively. Meanwhile,. The 5-year OS and DFS were both 92.3%, the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: Laparoscopic treatment of hepatic PEComa has the advantages of short operation time and short postoperative hospital stay, and the incidence of complications, 5-year OS and DFS are not significantly different from that of the open group.

Abstract
The clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging results, diagnosis and treatment and prognosis of 5 patients with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder were analyzed. It was found that the clinical characteristics of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder were very similar to that of gallbladder malignant tumor, and it was difficult to differentiate. Ultrasound guided gallbladder needle biopsy can confirm the diagnosis before surgery. Surgery is still the first choice of treatment. Since laparoscopic surgery has obvious advantages over open surgery, it is recommended to be preferentially used. If the tumor is under T2 stage and has no aggressive metastasis, the prognosis is generally good.

Abstract
School-based first aid interventions can contribute to the number of adults trained in first aid in the community over time but few studies have examined the effectiveness of teaching non-resuscitative first aid on knowledge, attitudes and skills. Currently, there is no consensus on the optimal content and duration of first aid training for junior secondary students. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effectiveness of a 2.5 hour introductory non-resuscitative first aid course for junior secondary students.This prospective, single-centre, pre-post study included 140 students (11-13 years old). Students completed a questionnaire on first aid knowledge, attitude towards first aid and self-confidence to perform first aid before and after a training session. Six emergency medicine physicians taught practical first aid skills training. A game-based formative assessment was undertaken where the instructors assessed small teams of students' role-playing injured classmates and first aid responders (and vice-versa) treating abrasions, ankle sprain, choking and a scald injury.Few students had prior first aid training (14%). After adjusting for student's age, sex, prior first aid training and format delivery, the course was associated with increased mean knowledge score (pre-training 53%, post-training 88%; mean difference [MD] 35%, 95% CI: 32% to 38%), positive attitudes and more confidence in performing first aid after training (all P < .001). All teams showed a good level of competency in treating simulated injuries with first aid kits.This brief non-resuscitative first aid course was associated with noticeable and valuable changes in knowledge score and self-confidence level in performing first aid. The game-based formative assessment facilitated a positive learning environment for skill competency evaluation.

Abstract
Objective: To study the expression and clinical significance of calcineurin B homologous protein 2 (CHP2) in gastric cancer (GC) and its effect on malignant phenotype of GC cells. Methods: The protein expression of CHP2 in 297 GC tissue and 198 normal gastric tissue samples were detected by immunohistochemistry. The relationship between the expression of CHP2 and clinicopathologic parameters of GC were analyzed. CHP2-overexpression plasmids and CHP2-interference plasmids were transfected into GC cell lines respectively. Wound healing assay and Transwell experiment was used to detect the invasion and migration ability of GC cells, and cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) method was used to detect the proliferation ability of GC cells. Results: The positive expression rate of CHP2 in GC was 68.7% (204/297), which was higher in benign margin (34.1%) (31/91), chronic gastritis (59.1%) (13/22), intestinal metaplasia (34.2%) (13/38), low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (40.0%) (12/30) and high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (41.2%)(7/17). The positive expression of CHP2 was correlated with tumor, node and metastasis (TNM) stage, lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis (all P<0.05), but not with gender, age, Laurén classification, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) levels, depth of invasion, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level and CEA 19-9 level (all P>0.05). The results of multivariate analysis showed that high expression of CHP2 and TNM stage were both independent parameters for predicting GC patient prognosis (both P<0.05). Interference of CHP2 expression in HGC-27 cells suppressed proliferation and migration significantly (P<0.05). However, over-expression CHP2 in AGS cells promoted proliferation, and migration significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: CHP2 plays an important role in the development of GC, which is expected to be a molecular marker for patient prognosis and a potential target of targeted therapy for GC patients.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the associations between exposure to chlorination disinfection by-products (CDBPs) during gestation and newborns' small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: During April 2010 to July 2012, a total of 3 903 pregnant women who lived in a district with the same water treatment plant in Wuhan, China were recruited to this perspective study. Information about demographic characteristics of pregnant women and their newborns was collected. The tap water samples were monthly collected for 28 months in 3 different sites, with 84 samples, and 4 kinds of trihalomethanes (THMs)(chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM)) and 2 kinds of chlorohaloacetic acids (HAAs) (trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA)) were determined. The pregnant women were divided into 4 groups(Q1 to Q4) by quartile method according to their exposure level of CDBPs. Binary Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between exposure to CDBPs during gestation and newborns' small for gestational age. Results: The average weight of all the newborns was (3 310.19±389.91) g, of which 169 (4.33%) were SGA. The median concentrations of TCM, BDCM, bromo-THMs, total THMs, TCAA, and DCAA during the whole pregnancy were 18.07, 4.93, 8.51, 26.74, 10.65, and 13.77 μg/L, respectively. Binary Logistic regression analysis showed dose-response relationships between elevated TCM and total THMs during the whole gestation and compared with Q1 group, while there was a increased risk of SGA in Q4 group, and OR(95%CI) was 1.87 (1.01-3.49) , 2.30 (1.22-4.35) , respectively (P for trend equaled to 0.044, 0.015). Compare with Q1 group, there also be positive associations between exposure to TCAA (Q4 group) during first-trimester and the whole gestation and SGA, while OR(95%CI) was 2.16 (1.19-3.91) (P for trend equaled to 0.015). Conclusion: Exposure to CDBPs during gestation might increase the risk of newborns' SGA.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the relative biological value (RBV) of 1α-hydroxycholecalciferol (1α-OH-D3) to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) in one- to 21-day-old broiler chickens fed calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient diets. On the d of hatch, 450 male Ross 308 broiler chickens were weighed and randomly allotted to 9 treatments with 5 replicates of 10 birds per replicate. The basal diet contained 0.50% Ca and 0.25% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) but was not supplemented with cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). The levels of Ca and NPP in basal diets were lower than those recommended by NRC (1994). 25-OH-D3 was fed at zero, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 μg/kg, and 1α-OH-D3 was fed at 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 μg/kg. The RBV of 1α-OH-D3 to 25-OH-D3 based on vitamin D intake was determined by the slope ratio method. Results showed that 25-OH-D3 or 1α-OH-D3 improved the growth performance and decreased the mortality in one- to 21-day-old broilers. A linear relationship was observed between the level of 25-OH-D3 or 1α-OH-D3 and mineralization of the femur, tibia, or metatarsus. The RBV of 1α-OH-D3 to 25-OH-D3 were 234, 253, and 202% when the weight, ash weight, and Ca percentage of femur were used as criteria. The corresponding RBV of 1α-OH-D3 to 25-OH-D3 were 232 to 263% and 245 to 267%, respectively, when tibia and metatarsus mineralization were used as criteria. These data indicate that when directly feeding a hormonally active form of vitamin D as 1α-OH-D3 proportionally less is needed than when using the precursor (25-OH-D3) in diets deficient in Ca and P.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the expression of succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit protein in succinate dehydrogenase-deficient gastrointestinal stromal tumors (SDH-deficient GISTs). Methods: Three hundred fifty-two cases of GISTs were collected from January 2003 to January 2017 at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University and West China Hospital of Sichuan University.The expression of succinate dehydrogenase subunit protein was detected by immunohistochemical EnVision technique in 352 cases of GISTs, and the negative cases were analyzed for clinicopathologic features and outcome. The gene segments of CKIT exons 9, 11, 13 and 17 and PDGFRA exons 12 and 18 were amplified and detected in SDH-deficient (negative) cases. Results: A total of 15 SDHB-deficient (negative) GISTs (4.3%, 15/352) were found among 352 cases of GISTs. Six patients were male and nine were female. The age of initial diagnosis ranged from 15 to 84 years (median=53 years, mean=47 years). The tumor involved stomach (14 cases) and mesentery (1 case). The tumor sizes varied from 0.5 cm to 15.0 cm (mean=6.9 cm). There were six, six and three cases of epithelioid, mixed and spindle cell types respectively. Eight cases showed multi-nodularity in the wall of stomach. Metastasis to lymph node was noted in four cases, one case showed intraperitoneal implantation metastasis. Metastases to liver, pancreas and lymph node were found in one case, and one case showed vascular invasion. Among SDHB-deficient GISTs, two SDHA-deficient (negative) cases were found (0.6%, 2/352), but there were no SDHC and SDHD deficient (negative) cases. Five of the fifteen SDH-deficient GISTs had follow-up data: one patient died 8 months after surgery from unknown cause, four had no recurrences or metastases, and there was no history of paraganglioma and pulmonary chondroma found in patients and their families. No mutation in CKIT and PDGFRA gene was identified in 15 cases of SDH-deficient GISTs. Conclusion: SDH-deficient GISTs have unique clinicopathologic features and a favorable prognosis, and a small proportion of cases are SDHA-deficient.

Abstract
Cell cultures derived from the brain tissues of Aequidens rivulatus (Günther) have been characterized previously. In this study, a continuous cell line ARB8 was further established, and its growth characteristics, transcription and susceptibility to fish viruses-including chum salmon reovirus (CSV), marbled eel infectious pancreative necrosis virus (MEIPNV), grouper nervous necrosis virus (GNNV), giant seaperch iridovirus (GSIV), red seabream iridovirus (RSIV), koi herpesvirus (KHV), herpesvirus anguilla (HVA) and marbled eel polyoma-like virus (MEPyV)-were examined. ARB8 cells that showed epithelioid morphology and were passaged >80 times grew well at temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C in L-15 medium containing 5%-15% foetal bovine serum. The cells constitutively transcribed connexion 43, glutamine synthetase, nestin and nkx6-2, which are markers for neural progenitor cells. The cells were highly susceptible to CSV, MEIPNV, GSIV and RSIV and showed the typical cytopathic effect (CPE). However, the cells were resistant to GNNV, KHV, HVA and MEPyV because no significant CPE was noted after infection. Optimal temperatures for virus production ranged from 25°C to 30°C. The results revealed that the neural progenitor cell line ARB8 can potentially serve as a useful tool for investigating fish viruses and isolating new viruses in ornamental cichlid fishes.

Abstract
Entanglements in energized equipment, including augers found in agricultural workplaces, have historically been a significant cause of traumatic injury. Incidents involving augers located inside agricultural confined spaces (primarily grain storage structures and forage silos), although relatively rare events, are a widely recognized problem due to the relative severity of the resulting injuries and the complexities of victim extrication. However, this problem is neither well documented nor elucidated in the research literature, other than anecdotal observations relating to medical treatment of auger-related injuries and citations for non-compliance with federal and state workplace safety regulations. A review of nearly 1,650 cases documented in the Purdue Agricultural Confined Spaces Incident Database from 1964 to 2013 identified 167 incidents involving entanglement in an energized auger that occurred while the victim was working inside an agricultural confined space. These incidents primarily included in-floor unloading augers, sweep augers, stirring augers, and auger components found on silo unloaders. Cases involving portable tube augers used to handle grain outside grain storage structures were not included. Based on analysis of the data, approximately 98% of known victims were male, with the 21-45 age group reporting the largest number of incidents. Nearly one-third (32.3%) of incidents were fatal, and lower limb amputation was the most frequently reported injury type. (It is believed that non-fatal incidents are grossly under-reported in the data set due to a lack of comprehensive reporting requirements, especially for most farms, feedlots, and seed processing operations, which are generally exempt from compliance with OSHA machine guarding, confined-space, and grain-handling standards.) The type of auger identified most frequently as the agent of injury was the exposed in-floor auger (48), which frequently resulted in amputation of one or more lower limbs when the victim stepped into an unguarded opening or well in the floor of the confined space. The primary reason identified as to why workers were exposed to energized augers in the cases documented was to assist in the removal of residual or out-of-condition grain. The large number of cases involving augers on top-unloading silo unloaders (36) was not anticipated. Silo unloaders also accounted for the largest number of documented fatalities (15). This analysis is the first known attempt to provide a better understanding of the frequency, severity, and causative factors of these incidents. Those key causative factors were found to be: (1) lack of or inadequate guarding, (2) unintentional energizing of components due to a lack of lockout/tagout training and provisions, and (3) exposure of untrained or inexperienced workers to energized and unguarded components during procedures to remove residual grain or other agricultural crops from storage structures. It is hoped that the results and recommendations presented will raise awareness of the hazards related to using energized equipment in confined spaces as well as contribute to development of new evidenced-based educational resources, engineering safety standards, and workplace safety regulations.

Abstract
Extraordinary absorption decrease in graphene superlattices in the visible range is presented. Due to competition between loss and resonant reflection at resonance, the absorption displays non-monotonic behavior. As the period number increases above a certain critical value, absorption decreases with the increase in the period number. This is in contrast to ordinary absorption for a non-resonant condition, which monotonically increases with the period number. Moreover, this extraordinary property can also be controlled by applying a gate voltage to graphene sheets. The results provide not only a new understanding of graphene physics but also an application in nanophotonics and optoelectronics.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the relative bioavailability (RBV) of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) to cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in 1- to 21-d-old broiler chickens fed with calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient diets. On the day of hatch, 450 female Ross 308 broiler chickens were assigned to nine treatments, with five replicates of ten birds each. The basal diet contained 0.50% Ca and 0.25% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) and was not supplemented with vitamin D. Vitamin D3 was fed at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 μg/kg, and 25-OH-D3 was fed at 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 μg/kg. The RBV of 25-OH-D3 was determined using vitamin D3 as the standard source by the slope ratio method. Vitamin D3 and 25-OH-D3 intake was used as the independent variable for regression analysis. The linear relationships between the level of vitamin D3 or 25-OH-D3 and body weight gain (BWG) and the weight, length, ash weight, and the percentage of ash, Ca, and P in femur, tibia, and metatarsus of broiler chickens were observed. Using BWG as the criterion, the RBV value of 25-OH-D3 to vitamin D3 was 1.85. Using the mineralization of the femur, tibia, and metatarsus as criteria, the RBV of 25-OH-D3 to vitamin D3 ranged from 1.82 to 2.45, 1.86 to 2.52, and 1.65 to 2.05, respectively. These data indicate that 25-OH-D3 is approximately 2.03 times as active as vitamin D3 in promoting growth performance and bone mineralization in broiler chicken diets.

Abstract
A symmetrical Fibonacci micro-ring resonator (SFMR) has been presented to avoid the coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) bottle, which is a bottle-shaped distribution for high orders in transmission spectra. The SFMR features three advantages that improve filtering quality compared to that provided by traditional periodic micro-ring resonators. First, sharper resonances are obtained by eliminating the CROW bottle from the mini gaps that appear in the major-band region. Second, peaks with perfect transmission are always obtained without a radius and coupling modulation in the mini-band regions and major-band regions. Third, the full width at half-maximum of the band-edge peak decreases with the increasing generation order.

Abstract
We present sharp resonances with complete transmission in the Thue-Morse microring resonator. The quasi-periodic structure attains a better quality of filtering than the traditional periodic structure. This includes the following: (i) the high-Q resonances with complete transmission are obtained in the transmission spectra, (ii) the maximum value of transmittance always remains 1 for an arbitrary proportion of two different radiuses in the major-band regions, and (iii) the complete transmission occurs for arbitrary coupling in the mini-band regions. Moreover, we propose an analytical method to predict the occurrences of resonance peaks in the mini-band regions based on the gap map.

Abstract
Twin extra high photoluminescence (PL) in resonant quasi-periodic double-period quantum wells (DPQWs) for higher-generation orders is demonstrated. In the DPQW, the number of maxima in the maximum values of the PL intensity is two, which is different from other quasi-periodic quantum wells (QWs) and traditional periodic QWs. The maximum PL intensity in a DPQW is also stronger than that in a periodic QW under the anti-Bragg condition and that in a Fibonacci QW. Although the peaks of the squared electric field for the twin PL are both located near the QWs, their field profiles are distinct.

Abstract
Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis × Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) 'Tainung No. 1' is the main variety cultivated in Taiwan, which is a hybrid and propagated only by grafting. In the spring of 2011, plants with systemic mottle and malformation on leaves were found in some orchards located in Puli and Nantou in central Taiwan. Interestingly, after 3 months of growth, most of these diseased plants became symptomless when the weather became warmer. Nevertheless, some striped concaves were observed on immature fruit surfaces of diseased plants. In March of 2011, two leaf samples exhibiting mosaic and three samples showing malformation were collected and tested by DAS-ELISA; none positively reacted with antibodies against the Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), East Asian passiflora virus (EAPV), Passion fruit mottle virus (PaMV), or Passion fruit crinkle virus (PCV) that have previously occurred in Taiwan. Rolling-circle amplification (RCA) with hexamer primers were adopted to analyze potential begomoviruses that were prevalent on the other crops in Taiwan (3). The RCA amplified products were digested with BamHI and separated on 1.2% agarose by gel electrophoresis. A fragment, about 3 kb, was purified from each gel and cloned into the respective site of pBluescript SK(-) individually. Clones were screened by EcoRI digestion and two types of restriction fragment length patterns were found among them. One type of a clone containing 2,745 nucleotides (Accession No. KC161185) with 98.5% identity to Euphorbia leaf curl virus (EuLCV) (1) and the other type of a clone containing 2,732 nucleotides (KC161184) with 91.7% identity to Papaya leaf curl Guangdong virus (PaLCuGDV) (2) were revealed by nucleotide comparisons of their DNA-A in GenBank. Accordingly, we confirmed the existence of passiflora isolates of EuLCV and PaLCuGDV. PCR primers CPup/Edw/Pdw (5'TGTGAAGG(A/C/G/T)CC(A/G/T)TGTAA(A/G)GT3'/5'CGCAGTTT CTGGAGGATATTAAG3'/5'TCGCATGCCACTTCCTCAGT3') were designed to differentiate these viruses by amplifying a 235 bp DNA fragment for EuLCV and 345 bp for PaLCuGDV. In a brief survey, all 26 passion fruit leaf samples collected from seven orchards were double infected with EuLCV and PaLCuGDV; only six samples collected from a specific orchard were found to harbor the PaLCuGDV infection. Thirty-seven seedlings from passion fruit (P. edulis f. flavicarpa) seeds were indexed and all were free from both viruses. Five virus-free plantlets of P. edulis f. flavicarpa, one EuLCV and PalCuGDV double infected P. edulis × P. edulis f. flavicarpa, and 20 whiteflies were put into one net tent for 2 months, and then the five plantlets were tested by PCR. The two EuLCV and PalCuGDV specific fragments were amplified from all five plantlets. The two begomoviruses cause mild symptoms on passion fruit plant but the appearance of the fruit was affected. Abstract
We present occurrence of the strongly localized modes with high transmission in one dimensional symmetric Thue-Morse quasicrystals. This quasicrystal has some interesting properties, including (i) there are strongly localized modes in separated regions which are around odd semi-quarter-wave thickness of the system, (ii) both the frequency of localized mode and the thicknesses of the space layer to appear localized modes are variant for different generation orders of the system, and (iii) the sharpness of the resonant peaks in the transmission spectra increases as the generation order of the system increases.

The existence of quasi-Bragg conditions (QBCs) in Thue-Morse dielectric multilayers (TMDMs), based on high reflectance and large forbidden gap regions in its transmission spectra, is presented. In contrast to a single traditional Bragg condition (TBC) in periodic bilayers, there are three QBCs in TMDMs. The formula for each of these QBCs is derived. The results show that one of these QBCs just overlaps the TBC. However, a singular point with perfect transmission exists in this QBC at the quarter-wave stack, at which high reflection exists in the periodic bilayers.

Abstract
A multiple narrow bandpass filter with both high Q factor and complete transmission using quasi-periodic Thue-Morse dielectric multilayers is proposed. The Q factor of the system increases exponentially with the generation order. Even though the Q factor of resonances increases as the generation order of the multilayers increases, these resonances are still complete resonances. The number of resonance peaks for the bandpass filter of the system also increases as the generation order increases. These resonance peaks have a multifractal distribution throughout the frequency range, which is different from that in traditional periodical multilayers.

Abstract
In 2009, more than 50% of vine type French beans were found bearing severe viral symptoms in a vegetable garden in Nantou County, Taiwan. Infected plants were stunted and exhibited pronounced mottling symptoms on their leaves. The symptomatic plants were mechanically inoculated on Chenopodium quinoa and local lesions developed 7 to 10 days after inoculation. The virus source established by back isolation the single lesion from C. quinoa on French beans developed symptoms similar to those found in the field. Host range test showed that this isolate could only infect leguminous plants, including soybean, mung bean, pea, peanut, asparagus bean, cowpea, adzuki bean, and lima bean, but not cucurbitaceous and solanaceous plants. Since only Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been reported in Taiwan to induce similar symptoms in French beans, we tested both the field collected and inoculated French beans by CMV antiserum in ELISA but obtained a negative result. Due to subsequent electron microscopy studies that found potyvirus and carlavirus like particles in the leaf dips of infected French beans, we conducted reverse transcription (RT)-PCR using generic degenerate primers for potyviruses (Hrp5/Pot1 (2) and PotZ/Pot1 (3)) and carlaviruses (Decarla-u2 (5'-TGCACTGARTCMGAYTATGARGCYTT-3' and Decarla-d1 (5'-GCACATRTCRTCVCCDGCAAA-3') previously designed in our lab. No amplification was found from the potyvirus primers, while the carlavirus one gave an expected amplicon of 285 bp, which was found sharing 81% nucleotide sequence identity with the replicase gene of Cowpea mild mottle virus (CpMMV) (GenBank Accession No. FJ560903). A primer pair (CpMMV-CPu: 5'-TTTACTCTTAggTWATggAgTC-3' and CpMMV-CPd: 5'-CCTATTAAAACACACAAHTCAAA-3') was thus designed to amplify the complete coat protein (CP) gene based on the reported CP sequences and obtained an expected 867-bp product from our French bean isolate. This 867-bp sequence (JX020701) was confirmed to have 97.6% amino acid sequence identities with the CP gene of a Puerto Rican CpMMV isolate (GU191840). In a separate survey, another isolate from asparagus bean (CpMMV-V) causing mild mottling symptom was obtained. Analyses of the CP gene of CpMMV-V (JX070669) confirmed that it shared 88.8% and 97.8% of nucleotide and amino acid sequence identities with the French bean isolate, respectively. Different from most carlaviruses with aphid transmissibility, CpMMV has been shown to be transmitted non-persistently by whiteflies (1). Both CpMMV isolates from Taiwan were confirmed to be transmitted by silver leaf whiteflies (Bemicia argentifolii Bellows and Perring). This is the first record of whitefly transmissible legume virus in Taiwan. Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of one alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol (1α-OH D3) on growth performance, tibia quality, and skin and meat color in broilers fed calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient corn-soybean meal diets. A total of 288 male Ross broilers, at 21 days of age, were randomly assigned to three treatments with eight cages per treatment. Three levels of 1α-OH D3 (0, 5, and 10 μg/kg) were added to a basal diet (0.50% Ca, 0.13% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP), and 0.35% total phosphorus (tP)) without vitamin D3. As a result of this study, the addition of 1α-OH D3 increased body weight gain (p<0.001), feed intake (p = 0.007), feed efficiency (p<0.001), tibia weight (p = 0.002), length (p<0.001), breaking-strength (p = 0.012), ash (p<0.001), Ca (p<0.001), and P content (p = 0.004). Dietary 1α-OH D3 enhanced breast meat yellowness (p = 0.015) and the length and weight of the small intestine of the broilers. Moreover, 1α-OH D3 decreased serum Ca concentration (p = 0.074) and breast meat redness (p = 0.010). These results indicate that the 1α-OH D3 improves growth, tibia quality, and meat color in broilers fed Ca- and P-deficient corn-soybean meal diets.

Abstract
Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants exhibiting systemic mild mosaic, vein yellowing, and leaf malformation were collected from Puli City in 2006. Double-antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA was used to test these samples for Chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV) infection using polyclonal antibodies. In addition, Chenopodium quinoa, C. amaranticolor, and Nicotiana benthamiana plants were mechanically inoculated with sap extracted from collected samples. Ten days postinoculation, chlorotic local lesions were observed on inoculated leaves of C. quinoa and C. amaranticolor plants, whereas, systemic mosaic and foliar distortion symptoms were developed on upper leaves of N. benthamiana plants. The DAS-ELISA test showed that field-collected pepper samples and inoculated leaves of C. quinoa and C. amaranticolor were infected with ChiVMV, while N. benthamiana with mosaic symptoms did not react with ChiVMV antibodies. To confirm ChiVMV, field-collected samples as well as mechanically inoculated plants were tested by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR using the potyvirus degenerate primers Hrp5/Pot1 (2). Amplified RT-PCR products were cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis of amplified fragments (1.4 kb) revealed that field-collected pepper samples were infected with ChiVMV and Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV). The DNA fragment amplified from C. quinoa and C. amaranticolor showed high (99.2%) sequence identities with the CP gene of ChiVMV (3) (GenBank Accession No. AM909717). However, amplicons obtained from N. benthamiana plants (GenBank Accession No. HQ329082) that showed mosaic symptoms showed 83.6% to 98.7% nucleotide identities with PepMoV (GenBank Accession Nos. AB126033, AF227728, AF440801, AF501591, EU586133, and M96425). Next, a pure isolate of PepMoV was established on N. benthamiana by mechanical inoculation of diluted plant sap obtained from a PepMoV-infected N. benthamiana plant. Bell pepper plants inoculated with the Taiwan isolate of PepMoV developed mosaic and leaf distortion symptoms. Antiserum against the PepMoV Taiwan isolate was subsequently prepared by immunizing rabbits with purified virus particles. Using the prepared antiserum and specific primers (1) to detect PepMoV, ChiVMV, and Pepper veinal mottle virus (PVMV), three viruses could be readily detected and differentiated from diseased bell peppers in the field. In a survey done in 2007, 18 of 33 pepper samples from southern Taiwan were found with mixed infections of PepMoV and ChiVMV, seven samples were infected with PepMoV and PVMV, five samples were infected with PVMV, and another three samples were infected with ChiVMV. Abstract
Incarcerated inguinal hernia is a common surgical indication in the emergency room. Delayed diagnosis can result in ischemic bowel or bowel perforation. The reported incarcerated contents include bowel loop, mesentery, omentum and, rarely, malignant lesions, such as lymphoma, metastatic tumors etc. We report a new case of primary spermatic cord liposarcoma presenting as emergent incarcerated inguinal hernia and review the related literature.

Abstract
Ferromagnetism is found in nanocrystalline Zn/ZnO core-shell structures prepared by sputtering pure Zn with subsequent oxidation. The saturation magnetization (M(S)) of the passivated ZnO shells increases with decrease in average particle size (d). The Curie temperature of the samples is above 400 degrees C. It is found that the ferromagnetism has a close relationship with point defects in ZnO shells. The maximum magnetization is estimated to be 28 emu cm(-3) (i.e. 0.14 mu(B) per unit cell) at 300 K, which is over three orders of magnitude larger than that of undoped ZnO nanoparticles or nanorods (10(-3)-10(-2) emu cm(-3)). More importantly, there is a scaling relation of M(s) alpha 1/d(n) (n = 5.20 +/- 0.20) for samples with d <or= 76 nm despite substantial differences in the particle size and shape. The results suggest that defects at the interface of the Zn/ZnO heterostructure make the main magnetic contributions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of ferulic acid (FA), an antioxidant from the Chinese herb Dong-Gui [Chinese angelica, Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels], on the regulation of various genes in hydrogen peroxide-stimulated porcine chondrocytes at the mRNA level. METHODS The effect of FA and the effective concentration of FA on porcine chondrocytes was evaluated by the lactate dehydrogenase, WST-1, crystal violet assay, and a chemical luminescence assay. Gene expression in hydrogen peroxide-stimulated chondrocytes either pre- or post-treated with FA was evaluated by real-time PCR. RESULTS Chondrocytes pre-treated with 40 microM FA decreased the hydrogen peroxide-induced interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and MMP-1 and partially restored SOX9 gene expression. Post-treatment with 40 microM FA also decreased the expression of MMP-1 and MMP-13. CONCLUSION FA decreased the hydrogen peroxide-induced IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, MMP-1 and MMP-13 and increased SOX9 gene expression. These findings suggest that FA may prove to be important in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Further research is needed.

Abstract
Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV), a thrips-transmitted, tentative species in the genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae, was first identified in solanaceous crops, but also infects several ornamental crops such as orchid (4), gloxinia (3), and calla lily (1). From 2005 to 2007, virus-like yellow ringspots were observed on the leaves of amaryllis (Hippeastrum hybridum Hort.) and blood lily (Haemanthus multiflorus Martyn.) plants cultured in screenhouses and a private garden, respectively. Three of several hundred amaryllis plants in screenhouses from two places were observed as showing yellow ringspot symptoms and one of six blood lily plants was observed as showing similar yellow ringspot symptoms. Sap extracts from symptomatic leaves were inoculated to Chenopodium quinoa Willd. and the resulting local lesions were passaged three successive times to C. quinoa for virus isolation. Using the tospovirus genus-specific primers gL3637 and gL4435c designed from the conserved region in the L RNA (2), DNA fragments of the expected size of 800 bp were amplified by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR from field samples and local lesions from C. quinoa. Extracts from the diseased plants and local lesions of C. quinoa reacted strongly with antiserum against the nucleocapsid (N) protein of CaCV in ELISA and western blotting. To confirm the identity of this virus, we amplified the N gene from three amaryllis and one blood lily source using primer pair WN2328 and WN3534 designed from the S RNA of Watermelon silver mottle virus (1), and these products were cloned and sequenced. The sequence from each virus isolate was determined from three independent clones. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of N genes for the blood lily isolate (GenBank Accession No. EF101344) and three amaryllis isolates (GenBank Accession Nos. EF101343, EF137177, and FJ185170) had identities greater than 97% with that of a CaCV isolate infecting Capsicum spp. found in Australia (GenBank Accession No. AY036057). Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony showed that these sequences clustered with CaCV. These results show that the virus identified from amaryllis and blood lily that were expressing yellow ringspot symptoms are isolates of CaCV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CaCV naturally infecting amaryllis and blood lily and it could become an important threat to ornamental production in Taiwan. References: (1) C. C. Abstract
In May of 2006, samples from tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Known-you 301) exhibiting necrotic symptoms on stems, petioles, and leaves were collected from Chiayi County, Taiwan. Double-antibody sandwich-ELISAs were performed using Cucumber mosaic virus, Tomato mosaic virus, Potato virus Y, Watermelon silver mottle virus, and Chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV) polyclonal antibodies. Three of eight samples reacted with antibodies against ChiVMV but not with the others. Using the potyvirus degenerate primers (Hrp 5/Pot 1) (2), an expected 1.5-kb DNA fragment including the 3'-end of the NIb gene, the complete coat protein (CP) gene, and the 3'-nontranslatable region of the virus was amplified from total RNA isolated from these three samples by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. A homology search in GenBank indicated that the new tomato-infecting virus in Taiwan belongs to Pepper veinal mottle virus (PVMV) since they shared >90% amino acid identity in the CP gene. A virus culture (Tom1) isolated from one of the diseased tomatoes was then established in Chenopodium quinoa and Nicotiana benthamiana and the CP gene was amplified and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. EU719647). Comparisons of the 807-nt CP gene with those of five PVMV isolates available in GenBank showed 81.5 to 93.1% nucleotide and 90.0 to 97.8% amino acid identity. Tom1 induced irregular necrotic lesions on stems, petioles, and leaves of tomato while inducing only mild mottle symptoms on pepper. Serological cross reaction between ChiVMV and PVMV has been observed previously (1,3) and also found in this study. To differentiate these two potyviruses by RT-PCR, primer pair CPVMVup/dw (5'-TATTC(T/C)TCAGTGTGG(A/T/C)T(T/C)CCACCAT and 5'-(T/C)C(A/T)C(A/T)(A/T/G)(A/T)AA(A/G)CCATAA(A/C)(A/C)ATA(A/G)T(T/C)T) was designed on the basis of the comparison of the CP gene and the 3'-nontranslatable region of the PVMV and ChiVMV. DNA fragments of 171 and 259 bp are expected to be amplified from ChiVMV and PVMV, respectively, by RT-PCR with primers CPVMVup/dw. In a field survey done in 2006, samples from diseased peppers (Capsicum annuum) that reacted with the polyclonal antibodies against ChiVMV were further identified by RT-PCR with primers CPVMVup/dw, indicating that both ChiVMV and PVMV infected pepper crops (Capsicum spp.) in Taiwan. A pepper isolate (Pep1) of PVMV was obtained from Nantou County through three times of single lesion passages on C. quinoa and then propagated on N. benthamiana. The CP gene of Pep1 was amplified and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. EU719646) and found to share 99.1% nucleotide and 100% amino acid identity with that of Tom1. Pep1 caused mild mottle symptoms on leaves of both tomato and pepper. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the presence of PVMV in Taiwan as well as in East Asia. References: (1) B. Abstract
Two new cell lines have been established from the muscle and swim bladder tissues of barramundi, Lates calcarifer, and designated as BM (barramundi muscle) and BSB (barramundi swimbladder), respectively. The cells multiplied well at 28 degrees C in Leibovitz's L-15 medium supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum, and have been continuously subcultured more than 100 times to date. Morphologically, BM cells were mostly fibroblastic, whereas BSB were mostly epithelial. Both cell lines were susceptible to grouper iridovirus (GIV) and displayed characteristics of apoptosis after viral infection. The induction of apoptosis was further assayed in GIV-infected BM and BSB cells by various methods. The inhibition of cell growth by GIV was demonstrated by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay. Morphological observations revealed typical apoptotic features in the infected cells, including cell shrinkage and rounding, chromosome condensation and formation of apoptotic body-like vesicles. Chromosome fragmentation was detected by DNA laddering and TUNEL assays. Finally, the appearance of phosphotidylserine on the outer leaflet of apoptotic cell membranes was confirmed by annexin V staining. This is the first report of apoptosis induced by GIV in fish cells.

Abstract
The reaction mechanisms of two inhibitor TFK(+) and TFK(0) binding to H447I mutant mouse acetylcholinesterase (mAChE) have been investigated by using a combined ab initio quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) approach and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. TFK(+) binding to the H447I mutant may proceed with a different reaction mechanism from the wild-type. A water molecule takes over the role of His447 and participates in the bond breaking and forming as a "charge relayer". Unlike in the wild-type mAChE case, Glu334, a conserved residue from the catalytic triad, acts as a catalytic base in the reaction. The calculated energy barrier for this reaction is about 8kcal/mol. These predictions await experimental verification. In the case of the neutral ligand TFK(0), however, multiple MD simulations on the TFK(0)/H447I complex reveal that none of the water molecules can be retained in the active site as a "catalytic" water. Taken together our computational studies confirm that TFK(0) is almost inactive in the H447I mutant, and also provide detailed mechanistic insights into the experimental observations.

Abstract
Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV) are two recognized species of the Tospovirus genus in the family Bunyaviridae infecting calla lily (Zantedeschia spp.). During 2005, 15 virus isolates were collected from different calla lily plants exhibiting yellow stripes on their leaves in Ho-Li, a major calla lily-production township in Taiwan. After three successive local lesion passages on Chenopodium quinoa Willd., diseased leaf tissues individually infected by these isolates were preserved in liquid nitrogen and used for subsequent identification studies. Using the tospovirus genus-specific primers gL3637 and gL4435c designed from the L RNA, an 800-bp DNA fragment was amplified in reverse transcription-PCR from all 15 isolates. Moreover, leaf extracts of the diseased calla lilies and the C. quinoa plants inoculated with the 15 virus isolates reacted with antisera against the nucleocapsid proteins (NP) of Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV)-gloxinia and Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV), but not to monoclonal antibodies against the NP of TSWV, CCSV, Peanut chlorotic fan-spot virus (PCFV), or Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) in indirect ELISA. These results indicate that the 15 virus isolates are tospoviruses belonging to the WSMoV serogroup. Additionally, we amplified and sequenced the full-length N gene from these tospovirus isolates using primers WN2328 (5'-CCATTGGTTTGCCTCCG-3') and WN3534 (5'-CGTCGACAGAGCAATCGAGGC-3') designed from the S RNA of WSMoV. The deduced amino acid sequences of the N protein from these 15 tospovirus isolates showed a greater than 92% identity to that of CaCV (GenBank Accession No. NC-008301). Furthermore, results of phylogenetic analysis of the 15 isolates on the basis of amino acids sequences, both genetic distance and parsimony trees indicated that they were all genetically clustered within CaCV using INSV, TSWV, and WSMoV as outgroups. The results indicate that the virus causing yellow stripes in calla lilies is a strain of CaCV. Abstract
It is important to establish valid field measures of lower body strength in the elderly, and to provide representative normative values that are culturally specific in order to help health professionals in the risk assessment of this group. A sample of 1,038 elderly Hong Kong Chinese undertook a 30-sec chair stand test (30CST), with a subsample of 143 completing isometric measures of maximal hip flexion and knee extension, plus a habitual physical activity questionnaire. The 30CST was significantly, yet only weakly, correlated with the isometric strength measures (r approximately 0.3-0.4), but accurately discriminated between levels of habitual physical activity and across ages in decades. The normative values generated provide useful data for health screening in this elderly Hong Kong population, but do not compare well with their healthier US counterparts.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to study the chemical and physical characterization of eggshell and eggshell membrane particles prepared from the hen eggshell waste. Under the characterization measurements investigated, it was found that the pore structures of the two biomaterials belong to a typical Type II, indicating that they should be basically characteristic of nonporous materials or materials with macropores or open voids. Further, the chemical composition of the resulting eggshell particle was strongly associated with the presence of carbonate minerals from the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. In contrast to the resulting eggshell membrane particle, the presence of functional groups of amines and amides was observable because of its chemical composition of fibrous proteins. From the isotherm data of methylene blue at 25 degrees C, the Freundlich model yielded a somewhat better fit than the Langmuir model. The adsorption isotherms revealed the eggshell biosorbents could only uptake the basic dye of less than 1.0mg/g in aqueous medium, which was attributed to their poor pore properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine teachers' views of the first batch of graduates of a revised medical curriculum in Asia. METHODS A cross-sectional study using a structured questionnaire was carried out to obtain the views of all the clinical teachers involved in teaching final year students of the old curriculum in 2000-01 and the new curriculum in 2001-02 at the University of Hong Kong, which commenced curricular reform in 1997. RESULTS Nearly 62% of respondents felt that better graduates were being produced with the new curriculum. The majority of them rated the new curriculum students better in nearly all the major goals of the new curriculum, such as self-directed learning initiative, problem solving skills, interpersonal skills and clinical performance in patient care. However, the core knowledge of the new curriculum students was of concern to some teachers. CONCLUSION This study focused on the first complete cycle of a revised medical curriculum in Asia. Teachers' views of the new curriculum students were highly positive and they felt that better graduates were being produced.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to determine if Solanum glaucophyllum (SG), a plant containing a glycoside of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, could be used as a feed additive to improve P utilization of broilers. SG leaves (1, 2.5, or 5 g/kg), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (15 microg/kg), or Ca and P (to achieve a 0.92% Ca:0.65% P:0.41% nonphytate P control diet) were added to a 0.56% Ca/0.45% P/0.28% nonphytate P basal diet and fed to broilers from 7 to 28 d of age. Birds fed basal ration alone exhibited reduced weight gain, bone density, and bone mineral content when compared with birds fed the 0.92% Ca:0.65% P diet. Adding 5 g SG leaves or 15 microg of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D/kg to the basal diet increased body weight gain, plasma Ca and P, bone ash, and bone density above basal diet levels. Plasma P and weight gain of birds fed 5 g SG or 15 microg of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D/kg basal diet were equivalent to those observed in birds fed the 0.92% Ca:0.65% P diet. In experiment 2, the effect of higher doses of SG, as well as the additive effect of SG with 1,200 phytase units/kg diet, were examined in chicks fed a 0.59% Ca and 0.42% P basal diet. Two levels of SG leaves (7.5 g and 10 g), phytase, or both SG (7.5 g) and phytase were added per kilogram of basal diet. Adding SG or phytase to the basal diet increased weight gain, plasma Ca, plasma P, and bone mineral content over that observed in birds fed basal diet alone. Combining SG with phytase provided no significant gains in growth or bone parameters over treatment with phytase alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low literacy is common in Hong Kong and China, especially among the females and the elderly. These are often the patients with the greatest health care needs. However little is known about how low literacy affects the ability of patients to obtain adequate medical care and comply with the recommendations of health professionals. METHODS Qualitative study of subjects' opinions using semi-structured group and individual interviews. Thirty-six participants took part in 6 group and 9 individual interviews. RESULTS Participants' opinions towards low literacy were explored in the interviews. They expressed diverse views on how they perceived low literacy. Some thought they were handicapped by it but others felt it was not a problem. Age, gender, chronic illnesses and their attitudes towards self were found to be major factors affecting their perception. Despite their low literacy, some had their specific ways to overcome the difficulties, for example, drawing symbols to help with the timing of taking the medications. Most of them felt better explanation by the health care workers was most important. CONCLUSIONS It is highly relevant for health care workers to be aware of the low literacy status of their patients and to explain information so that patients understand it.

Abstract
This study evaluated fermentation characteristics and fungal numbers of napiergrass silages prepared with and without added raw or heated corn meal (10%, fresh-weight basis) at ensiling. Corn was added to napiergrass so that the silage would contain concentrate similar to that of corn silage with minimum grain content. The silages treated with raw or heated corn were fed to dairy does to compare voluntary silage consumption. After 8 wk of fermentation, pH for silage treated with heated corn was lowest, and that for napiergrass ensiled alone was highest among the treatments. The addition of corn increased lactic acid, but propionic and butyric acids were also elevated. Acetic acid decreased in response to the supplementation of corn but remained the dominant acid for all silages. Numbers of fungi (yeasts plus molds) in silages did not differ significantly at silo opening or after 24 h of exposure to air. However, the numbers of fungi at 48 h in aerated silages containing corn were lower than were the fungi counts in the control silage. When the silages were offered free choice along with concentrate at a fixed rate, dairy does tended to consume more silage treated with heated corn than raw corn. Whole-tract nutrient digestibility and serum glucose and urea N were not altered. These results indicate that the addition of either raw or heated corn meal to napiergrass at ensiling was beneficial to silage fermentation quality because it decreased pH, increased lactic acid, and apparently suppressed fungal populations via elevated antifungal acids. A further advantage of heated corn vs. raw corn was increased silage intake.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the students' views on a transitional course for Asian freshers in a revised medical curriculum. Data were collected through the year-end questionnaire distributed to all first-year students over three academic years from 1997 to 2000. The students considered the transitional course had encouraged them to become more active and self-directed although there were different views about its overall effectiveness. Students appeared uncertain as to the depth in which they were expected to master the subjects, thus leading them to call for more clearly stated learning objectives to help relieve the anxiety they had towards the examinations. Lectures and self-assessment exercises were seen to be providing the general guides for that.

Abstract
Studies have documented that health and income are important variables affecting the quality of life in old age. However, there is little knowledge about whether perceived financial sufficiency affects the health of elderly persons. Recent research has documented that in addition to material and behavioural determinants, psychosocial pathways also have an influence on health inequalities. This is the first paper to examine the relation between self-rated economic condition (measured with a single item question) and reported health conditions (i.e., somatic complaints, diagnosed physical diseases, functional health (Activities of Daily Living), self-rated health, and mental health status (General Health Questionnaire-30 [GHQ-30]) among elderly persons in Hong Kong. The respondents of the study were persons aged 65 and over residing in public housing estates in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. Four hundred and fifty respondents were interviewed in 1995 by means of a structured questionnaire. The study found that although it did not record the actual income levels of the respondents, the subjective measure vividly demonstrated the health differentials among the elderly respondents. Multiple regression analyses suggested that self-rated economic condition was a significant predictor of the number of somatic complaints and physical illnesses reported, as well as of functional health, self-rated health, and mental health status (controlling for socio-demographic variables). However, the measure explained a higher proportion of variance in models related to psychological health than those related to physical health. The findings substantiated the role of psychosocial processes in understanding perceived health and illness and health inequalities in particular.

Abstract
Previous studies from our laboratory demonstrated that AP-2alpha induces the expression of the hPL and hCG genes in cultured trophoblast cells. In the current study, we have shown by transient transfection studies that AP-2gamma, which is the product of a separate gene from AP-2alpha, also stimulates hPL and hCGbeta promoter activities. However, AP-2gamma mRNA levels during in vitro differentiation of human cytotrophoblast cells were strikingly different than those of AP-2alpha mRNA levels, with AP-2alpha increasing and AP-2gamma markedly decreasing during the differentiation process. The amount of AP-2gamma protein binding to AP-2 elements on the hPL promoter, as determined by supershift assays, also markedly decreased during the differentiation process. These findings strongly suggest that AP-2gamma action in cytotrophoblast cells is repressed by a co-factor(s) that inhibits AP-2gamma action or is prevented by the absence of a co-factor(s) that is essential for AP-2gamma action.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate if carotenoids could alleviate the adverse effects caused by aflatoxin with respect to growth performance and immune response. In two experiments, a total of 320 mule ducklings were assigned to 5 treatments, i.e. control, aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) 200 ppb, AFB(1) +beta-carotene (BC) 200 ppm, AFB(1)+BC 400 ppm, and AFB(1)+astaxanthin (AS) 200 ppm. In experiment 1, the addition of beta-carotene or astaxanthin in the diet containing AFB(1) 200 ppb resulted in a significant decrease in average daily gain as compared with the control. AFB(1) 200 ppb alone and the addition of BC or AS on top of AFB(1) resulted in a significantly lower daily feed intake than for the control group. There were no significant differences in relative organ weights among treatment groups. Both treatments of BC 400 ppm and AS 200 ppm had significantly more macrophages harvested per duck than the control and AFB(1) 200 ppb treatments. However, there were no significant differences among treatments in percentages of phagocytotic macrophages and number of Candida albican phagocytized by phagocytotic macrophages. In experiment 2, blood biochemical parameters and antibody titers were evaluated. There were no significant differences among treatments in total bilirubin content and alkaline phosphatase activity in the serum or in antibody titers against fowl cholera. However, AFB(1) treatment had the highest activities of AST and ALT in the serum. The addition of BC 400 ppm on top of AFB(1) significantly reduced ALT activity as compared with the AFB(1) 200 ppb treatment. These results suggest that carotenoids could provide a slightly toxic alleviating effect on growth performance, enhance the chemotaxis ability of macrophages, and reduce ALT activity elevated by AFB(1).

Abstract
An animal model of chronic fluorosis was produced by subjecting Wistar rats to high doses of fluoride in drinking water for a prolonged period. Phospholipid and neutral lipid contents in rat kidney were then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and fatty acid compositions from individual phospholipids were measured by gas chromatography. Lipid peroxidation was detected by the thiobarbituric-acid-reactive substance assay. Results showed that the total phospholipid content significantly decreased in the kidney of the rats treated with high doses of fluoride and the main species influenced were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC). Decreased proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids were observed in PE and PC in kidney of fluoride-treated animals compared to controls. No changes could be detected in the amounts of cholesterol and dolichol in kidneys between the rats treated with fluoride and controls. A significant decrease of ubiquinone in rat kidney was observed in the groups treated with excessive fluoride. High levels of lipid peroxidation were detected in kidney of the rats with fluorosis. It is plausible that the specific modification of lipid composition results from lipid peroxidation. The oxidative stress and modification of cellular membrane lipids may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic fluorosis and provide a possible explanation for the gross system damage observed in the body, especially in soft tissues and organs.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe non-curable illness of the brain with serious consequences if not properly treated and kept under control. Antipsychotic drugs have revolutionised the therapy and management of schizophrenia. However, patient compliance rates are notoriously poor due to the nature of the disease and troublesome side-effects, and are major causes of symptom recurrence. Although some new antipsychotic agents have been marketed to offer broader efficacy with much reduced side-effect profiles, the drug delivery systems for antipsychotics are still in the stage of conventional dosage forms, such as tablets, capsules and solutions, and need to be dosed at the frequency of 2-4 times daily. Doubtless. novel drug delivery systems, such as sustained and controlled release systems, will be useful for antipsychotics. They should reduce the frequency of dosing. enhance drug bioavailability and improve patient compliance. In this article, the specificity and characterisation of schizophrenia and pathophysiology. drug therapy. and the development and future prospects of neuroleptic drug delivery systems are reviewed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of collagen/hydroxyapatite(CHA) instead of autogenous bone transplantation on repairing the mandibular defects. METHODS Ten Chinese experimental minipigs were made 2 cm bone defects in diameter in the mandible. The experimental group was implanted CHA, while the control group was implanted autogenous bone. The basic parameters of bone dynamics were determined by bone metrology. RESULTS There was remarkable difference between the two groups in the mean distance and mineralization apposition rate of double label bands marked by tetracycline(P < 0.05), while the mean osteoid seam width and mineralization lag time had no remarkable difference(P > 0.05). It suggested that CHA had good osteogenesis. The collagen in CHA offered the condition of bone mineralization, and the mineralization peak of experimental group was present at 4 weeks earlier than that of control group (8 weeks). CONCLUSION CHA may be a substitute of autogenous bone transplantation in repairing the mandibular defects, and the second operation for offering the implanting bone is avoidable, therefore, CHA may be an ideal material to repair bone defects.

Abstract
Production of placental CRH, which is identical to the peptide synthesized and secreted in the hypothalamus, has been linked to human parturition. Glucocorticoids stimulate placental CRH secretion and messenger ribonucleic acid expression, in contrast to their inhibition of CRH synthesis in the hypothalamus. A positive feedforward loop involving glucocorticoid-CRH-ACTH-glucocorticoid is thought to drive the exponential increase in placental CRH leading to delivery. Tissue-specific effects of glucocorticoids on CRH expression are therefore of interest. Using human primary placental cells, we investigated the mechanism by which glucocorticoids stimulate placental CRH gene expression. Nuclear run-on transcription shows that in human placental cells glucocorticoids up-regulate transcription of human CRH (hCRH). Using transient transfection assays we demonstrate that dexamethasone up-regulates both basal and cAMP-stimulated hCRH promoter activity, correlating well with the increase in endogenous CRH peptide levels. Through mutagenesis and deletion analyses we show that dexamethasone stimulation of hCRH gene transcription requires a functional cAMP regulatory element (CRE); this CRE is adequate to confer dexamethasone stimulation upon a heterologous promoter, and electrophoretic mobility shift assay studies show that a placental nuclear protein specifically binds to the hCRH CRE.

Abstract
CRH, the principal neuropeptide regulator of pituitary ACTH secretion, is also expressed in placenta. Placental CRH has been linked to the process of human parturition. However, the mechanisms regulating transcription of the CRH gene in placenta remain unclear. cAMP signaling pathways play important roles in regulating the expression of a diverse range of endocrine genes in the placenta. Therefore, we have explored the effect of cAMP on CRH promoter activity in primary cultures of human placental cells. Both forskolin and 8-bromo-cAMP, activators of protein kinase A, can increase CRH promoter activity 5-fold in transiently transfected human primary placental cells, in a manner that parallels the increase in endogenous CRH peptide. Maximal stimulation of CRH promoter activity occurs at 500 micromol/L 8-bromo-cAMP and 10 micromol/L forskolin. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay and mutation analysis combined with transient transfection demonstrate that in placental cells cAMP stimulates CRH gene expression through a cAMP regulatory element in the proximal CRH promoter region and involves a placental nuclear protein interacting specifically with the cAMP regulatory element.
