Association of Intrinsic Functional Brain Network and Longitudinal Development of Cognitive Behavioral Symptoms in Young Girls With Fragile X Syndrome

BACKGROUND

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X chromosome-linked genetic disorder characterized by increased risk for behavioral, social, and neurocognitive deficits. Because males express a more severe phenotype than females, research has focused largely on identifying neural abnormalities in all-male or both-sex populations with FXS. Therefore, very little is known about the neural alterations that contribute to cognitive behavioral symptoms in females with FXS. This cross-sectional study aimed to elucidate the large-scale resting-state brain networks associated with the multidomain cognitive behavioral phenotype in girls with FXS.

METHODS

We recruited 38 girls with full-mutation FXS (11.58 ± 3.15 years) and 32 girls without FXS (11.66 ± 2.27 years). Both groups were matched on age, verbal IQ, and multidomain cognitive behavioral symptoms. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected.

RESULTS

Compared with the control group, girls with FXS showed significantly greater resting-state functional connectivity of the default mode network, lower nodal strength at the right middle temporal gyrus, stronger nodal strength at the left caudate, and higher global efficiency of the default mode network. These aberrant brain network characteristics map directly onto the cognitive behavioral symptoms commonly observed in girls with FXS. An exploratory analysis suggested that brain network patterns at a prior time point (time 1) were predictive of the longitudinal development of participants' multidomain cognitive behavioral symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings represent the first examination of large-scale brain network alterations in a large sample of girls with FXS, expanding our knowledge of potential neural mechanisms underlying the development of cognitive behavioral symptoms in girls with FXS.

The development of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) during adolescence: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Despite a surge in research on self-injury in the last decade, a summary of research findings about the development of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) over time in community youth samples is not yet present in the scientific literature. This study aims to summarize the empirical literature on this topic, examining both the occurrence (Study 1) and frequency (Study 2) of NSSI over time, and for this reason, a Systematic Review and Bayesian Meta-Analysis were conducted.

METHODS

Following the PRISMA guidelines, the longitudinal studies included in the systematic review consisted of 41 papers (Study 1 = 16; Study 2 = 25). Only studies with available data were included in the meta-analysis (Study 1 = 12; Study 2 = 11).

RESULTS

First, the findings highlight limits related to methodological aspects, the design of the studies, and the availability of data. Meta-analytic results shows that across development, the frequency (i.e., not the occurrence) of NSSI increases for the group of younger adolescents, remains stable in the group of middle adolescents, and it decreases for older adolescents.

LIMITATIONS

This study highlights some limitations that can be summarized in three different macro categories: the first refers to methodological aspects (e.g., the lifetime prevalence of NSSI), the second to the design of the studies (e.g., not homogeneous cohort; short-term covered), and the third to the availability of data.

CONCLUSIONS

The current meta-analysis tries to shed light on the longitudinal research on NSSI behavior and how this behavior develops in terms of both occurrence and frequency, providing practical and methodological indications for future research.

Association of maternal hypertension during pregnancy with brain structure and behavioral problems in early adolescence

Emerging evidence suggests an association between maternal hypertension during pregnancy and mental health in the offspring. However, less is known about the role of hypertensive pregnancy in behavioral symptoms and brain structures of the offspring as well as in their developmental changes. Here, we utilized neuroimaging and behavioral data from 11,878 participants aged 9-10 years and their 2-year follow-up from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study to investigate the long-term effects of maternal hypertension during pregnancy on early adolescent behavior and brain anatomy. Specifically, adolescents born of mothers with maternal hypertension are at risk of long-lasting behavioral problems, as manifested by higher externalizing and internalizing behavior scores at both 9-10 years and 11-12 years. These participants additionally presented with a higher cortical thickness, particularly in the fronto-parieto-temporal areas at 9-10 years. Four regions, including the left parahippocampus, left lateral orbitofrontal lobe, right superior temporal lobe and right temporal pole, remained thicker 2 years later. These findings were partially validated in rats modeled with Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) preeclampsia. Therefore, clinicians and women who experience hypertension during pregnancy should be warned of this risk, and healthcare providers should recommend appropriate clinical interventions for pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Longitudinal Structural and Diffusion-Weighted Neuroimaging of Young Children Born Preterm

BACKGROUND

Children born preterm are at risk for diffuse injury to subcortical gray and white matter.

METHODS

We used a longitudinal cohort study to examine the development of subcortical gray matter and white matter volumes, and diffusivity measures of white matter tracts following preterm birth. Our participants were 47 children born preterm (24 to 32 weeks gestational age) and 28 children born at term. None of the children born preterm had significant neonatal brain injury. Children received structural and diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans at ages five, six, and seven years. We examined volumes of amygdala, hippocampus, caudate nucleus, putamen, thalamus, brainstem, cerebellar white matter, intracranial space, and ventricles, and volumes, fractional anisotropy, and mean diffusivity of anterior thalamic radiation, cingulum, corticospinal tract, corpus callosum, inferior frontal occipital fasciculus, inferior longitudinal fasciculus, temporal and parietal superior longitudinal fasciculus, and uncinate fasciculus.

RESULTS

Children born preterm had smaller volumes of thalamus, brainstem, cerebellar white matter, cingulum, corticospinal tract, inferior frontal occipital fasciculus, uncinate fasciculus, and temporal superior longitudinal fasciculus, whereas their ventricles were larger compared with term-born controls. We found no significant effect of preterm birth on diffusivity measures. Despite developmental changes and growth, group differences were present and similarly strong at all three ages.

CONCLUSION

Even in the absence of significant neonatal brain injury, preterm birth has a persistent impact on early brain development. The lack of a significant term status by age interaction suggests a delayed developmental trajectory.

Dynamic changes of inulin utilization associated with longitudinal development of gut microbiota

Inulin is a typical kind of fermentable polysaccharide and has emerged as a promising dietary supplement due to its multiple health-promoting effects. This study aimed to unveil the dynamic change pattern of inulin utilizability as a fermentation substrate during gut microbiota development and illuminate its potential association with gut microbiota in Chinese Jinhua native pig models via longitudinal analyses. Herein, fresh feces were collected at one week pre- and post-weaning as well as 3rd month post-weaning, respectively. Targeted metabolomics and in vitro simulated fermentation revealed increasing concentrations of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and elevating utilizability of inulin as a fermentation substrate. Microbiomic analyses demonstrated the conspicuous longitudinal alteration in gut microbial composition and a significant rise in microbial community diversity during gut microbiota development. Furthermore, gut microbial functional analyses showed a remarkable increase in the relative abundances of carbohydrate metabolism pathways, including pentose phosphate pathway, galactose metabolism pathway, butanoate metabolism pathway as well as fructose and mannose metabolism pathway. Notably, relative abundances of bacterial genera Bifidobacterium, Roseburia, Faecalibacterium and Enterococcus displayed significantly positive correlations with the production of microbial fermentation-derived SCFAs. Collectively, these findings offer novel insights into understanding inulin utilizability variations from the perspective of gut microbiota development.

Lower gestational age is associated with lower cortical volume and cognitive and educational performance in adolescence

BACKGROUND

Gestational age (GA) is associated with later cognition and behavior. However, it is unclear how specific cognitive domains and brain structural development varies with the stepwise change of gestational duration.

METHODS

This large-scale longitudinal cohort study analyzed 11,878 early adolescents' brain volume maps at 9-10 years (baseline) and 5685 at 11-12 years (a 2-year follow-up) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. According to gestational age, adolescents were divided into five categorical groups: ≤ 33 weeks, 34-35 weeks, 36 weeks, 37-39 weeks, and ≥ 40 weeks. The NIH Toolbox was used to estimate neurocognitive performance, including crystallized and fluid intelligence, which was measured for 11,878 adolescents at baseline with crystallized intelligence and relevant subscales obtained at 2-year follow-up (with participant numbers ranging from 6185 to 6310 depending on the cognitive domain). An additional large population-based cohort of 618,070 middle adolescents at ninth-grade (15-16 years) from the Danish national register was utilized to validate the association between gestational age and academic achievements. A linear mixed model was used to examine the group differences between gestational age and neurocognitive performance, school achievements, and grey matter volume. A mediation analysis was performed to examine whether brain structural volumes mediated the association between GA and neurocognition, followed with a longitudinal analysis to track the changes.

RESULTS

Significant group differences were found in all neurocognitive scores, school achievements, and twenty-five cortical regional volumes (P < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected). Specifically, lower gestational ages were associated with graded lower cognition and school achievements and with smaller brain volumes of the fronto-parieto-temporal, fusiform, cingulate, insula, postcentral, hippocampal, thalamic, and pallidal regions. These lower brain volumes mediated the association between gestational age and cognitive function (P = 1 × 10^-8, β = 0.017, 95% CI: 0.007-0.028). Longitudinal analysis showed that compared to full term adolescents, preterm adolescents still had smaller brain volumes and crystallized intelligence scores at 11-12 years.

CONCLUSIONS

These results emphasize the relationships between gestational age at birth and adolescents' lower brain volume, and lower cognitive and educational performance, measured many years later when 9-10 and 11-12 years old. The study indicates the importance of early screening and close follow-up for neurocognitive and behavioral development for children and adolescents born with gestational ages that are even a little lower than full term.

The Development of Gender Role Attitudes During Adolescence: Effects of Sex, Socioeconomic Background, and Cognitive Abilities

How gender role attitudes develop during adolescence, and how biological, social, and cognitive factors predict this development, remains a matter of debate. This study examines the development of gender role attitudes from early adolescence to emerging adulthood and investigates how the developmental trajectory is affected by sex, socioeconomic status, and cognitive abilities (intelligence). Four waves of the large-scale longitudinal German dataset BIJU between 1991 (grade 7; N = 3828, M_age = 13, SD = 0.61, 53.1% female, 96.4% German nationality), 1995 (grade 10, M_age = 17), 1997 (grade 12, M_age = 19) and 2001/2002 (university/career entry, M_age = 24) were used. Measurement invariance was examined across waves and gender. Latent growth curve models showed that adolescents developed more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Differences between the sexes decreased over time but remained significant. Socioeconomic status seemed less relevant, while adolescents, especially those with lower intelligence scores, developed more egalitarian gender role attitudes during adolescence. The results showed that teenagers developed more open and egalitarian attitudes during adolescence, and that the development trajectories of female and male adolescents converge.

A 16-year study of longitudinal volumetric brain development in males with autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with unknown brain etiology. Our knowledge to date about structural brain development across the lifespan in ASD comes mainly from cross-sectional studies, thereby limiting our understanding of true age effects within individuals with the disorder that can only be gained through longitudinal research. The present study describes FreeSurfer-derived volumetric findings from a longitudinal dataset consisting of 607 T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans collected from 105 male individuals with ASD (349 MRIs) and 125 typically developing male controls (258 MRIs). Participants were six to forty-five years of age at their first scan, and were scanned up to 5 times over a period of 16 years (average inter-scan interval of 3.7 years). Atypical age-related volumetric trajectories in ASD included enlarged gray matter volume in early childhood that approached levels of the control group by late childhood, an age-related increase in ventricle volume resulting in enlarged ventricles by early adulthood and reduced corpus callosum age-related volumetric increase resulting in smaller corpus callosum volume in adulthood. Larger corpus callosum volume was related to a lower (better) ADOS score at the most recent study visit for the participants with ASD. These longitudinal findings expand our knowledge of volumetric brain-based abnormalities in males with ASD, and highlight the need to continue to examine brain structure across the lifespan and well into adulthood.

The dynamics of metabolic syndrome development from its isolated components among Iranian adults: findings from 17 years of the Tehran lipid and glucose study (TLGS)

Background

Evaluating the process of changes in the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) components over time is one of the ways to study of the MetS natural history. This study aimed to determine the trend of changes in the progression of MetS from its isolated components.

Methods

This longitudinal study was performed on four follow-up periods of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) between 1999 and 2015. The research population consisted of 3905 adults over the age of 18 years. MetS was diagnosed based on the Joint Interim Statement (JIS). The considered components were abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia.

Results

The highest incidence of MetS from its components was related to hypertension in the short term (3.6-year intervals). In the long run, however, the highest increase in the MetS incidence occurred due to abdominal obesity. Overall, the incidence of MetS increased due to obesity and dyslipidemia, but decreased due to the other factors. Nonetheless, the trend of MetS incidence from all components increased in total. The most common components were dyslipidemia with a decreasing trend and obesity with an increasing trend during the study.

Conclusion

The results indicated that obesity and hypertension components played a more important role in the further development of MetS compared to other components in the Iranian adult population. This necessitates careful and serious attention in preventive and control planning.

The dynamics of metabolic syndrome development from its isolated components among iranian children and adolescents: Findings from 17 Years of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS)

BACKGROUND

Careful evaluation of the progression trend of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children and adolescents (C&A) is one of the important methods of studying the natural history of MetS in them. This study was performed to determine the trend of changes in the progression of MetS from its components.

METHODS

This was a longitudinal study which was performed on data from 4 follow-up periods of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) between 1999 and 2015. The research population consisted of 6-18-year-old children and adolescents creating 3895-person population. The criteria for the diagnosis of MetS was joint interim statement (JIS). The considered components were central adiposity, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia.

RESULTS

In this study, in the long term, the highest increase in the MetS' incidence in boys occurred in obesity and in girls in dyslipidemia and in total mode, in obesity. But in the short term (3.6 year follow-up periods) in the first to fourth periods, in total mode, the highest incidence occurred in dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity. In terms of trend, in total mode, the highest increase in MetS incidence was related to the obesity component. Also, the incidence of MetS from all components was declining in overall mode. Also, the most common components at the beginning and end of the study in all groups were dyslipidemia with a decreasing and obesity with an increasing trend, respectively.

CONCLUSION

It seems that in Iranian C&As, obesity and dyslipidemia components play a more important role in the further development of the MetS than other components. This matter requires careful and serious attention in preventive and control planning.

Visual form perception predicts 3-year longitudinal development of mathematical achievement

Numerous studies have demonstrated an association between approximate number system (ANS) acuity and mathematical performance. Studies have also shown that ANS acuity can predict the longitudinal development of mathematical achievement. Visual form perception in the current investigation was proposed to account for the predictive role of ANS acuity in the development of mathematical achievement. One hundred and eighty-eight school children (100 males, 88 females; mean age = 12.2 ± 0.3 years) participated in the study by completing five tests: numerosity comparison, figure matching, mental rotation, nonverbal matrix reasoning, and choice reaction time. Three years later, they took a mathematical achievement test. We assessed whether the early tests predicted mathematical achievement at the later date. Analysis showed that the ANS acuity measured via numerosity comparison significantly predicted mathematical achievement 3 years later, even when controlling for individual differences in mental rotation, nonverbal matrix reasoning, and choice reaction time, as well as age and gender differences. Hierarchical regression and mediation analyses further showed that the longitudinal predictive role of ANS acuity in mathematical achievement was interpreted by visual form perception measured with a figure-matching test. Together, these results indicate that visual form perception may be the underlying cognitive mechanism that links ANS acuity to mathematical achievement in terms of longitudinal development.

Fat and fat-free mass of healthy Swedish children show tracking during early life, but there are differences

AIM

Obesity may start early in life. We investigated relationships between size and body composition variables in infancy and at 4 years of age using valid estimates of body composition. The results were compared to those obtained when body mass index (BMI) was used to estimate body fatness at 4 years.

METHODS

Using air displacement plethysmography, size, fat mass and fat-free mass were studied, between 2007 and 2015, in 253 full-term healthy Swedish children at 1 week, 12 weeks and 4 years of age.

RESULTS

Positive associations between variables in infancy and at 4 years were found at 1 and 12 weeks for weight, height, BMI, fat-free mass and fat-free mass index (p ≤ 0.002) and for fat mass, per cent body fat and fat mass index (p ≤ 0.04) at 12 weeks. Fat mass gained during infancy correlated positively (p ≤ 0.031) with per cent fat mass, fat mass index and BMI, all at 4 years. In girls, gains in fat-free mass during infancy correlated with BMI (p = 0.0005) at 4 years.

CONCLUSION

The results provide information regarding body composition trajectories during early life and demonstrate limitations of BMI as a proxy for body fatness when relating early weight gain to variables, relevant for later obesity risk.

Development of executive functions from childhood to adolescence in very preterm-born individuals - A longitudinal study

Preterm-born individuals are at risk for poorer executive functions. Longitudinal studies investigating whether preterm-born individuals present persistent cognitive deficits, or a transient delay of development are scarce. We assessed developmental trajectories of executive functions (inhibition, working memory, cognitive flexibility) in 29 very preterm-born individuals (<32 weeks' gestation) and 25 term-born controls longitudinally over two time points, namely in childhood (7-12 years of age, TP1) and adolescence (13-16 years of age, TP2). Individual changes in executive functions were examined using relative difference scores (TP2 - TP1) / TP1). There was a significantly stronger improvement of inhibition (U = 477, p = .024) and cognitive flexibility (U = 312, p = .029) between childhood and adolescence in very preterm-born individuals than in term-born controls. Preterm-born individuals improved their performance in the domain of cognitive flexibility significantly more often (76%) between childhood and adolescence than controls (31%, χ² = 8.6, p = .003). Controls worsened significantly more often (36%) in the domain of inhibition than the preterm group (14%, χ² = 4.8, p = .028). Results indicate that healthy preterm-born individuals show prolonged development of executive functions throughout childhood up into adolescence.

A computational method for longitudinal mapping of orientation-specific expansion of cortical surface in infants

The cortical surface of the human brain expands dynamically and regionally heterogeneously during the first postnatal year. As all primary and secondary cortical folds as well as many tertiary cortical folds are well established at term birth, the cortical surface area expansion during this stage is largely driven by the increase of surface area in two orthogonal orientations in the tangent plane: 1) the expansion parallel to the folding orientation (i.e., increasing the lengths of folds) and 2) the expansion perpendicular to the folding orientation (i.e., increasing the depths of folds). This information would help us better understand the mechanisms of cortical development and provide important insights into neurodevelopmental disorders, but still remains largely unknown due to lack of dedicated computational methods. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for longitudinal mapping of orientation-specific expansion of cortical surface area in these two orthogonal orientations during early infancy. First, to derive the two orientation fields perpendicular and parallel to cortical folds, we propose to adaptively and smoothly fuse the gradient field of sulcal depth and also the maximum principal direction field, by leveraging their region-specific reliability. Specifically, we formulate this task as a discrete labeling problem, in which each vertex is assigned to an orientation label, and solve it by graph cuts. Then, based on the computed longitudinal deformation of the cortical surface, we estimate the Jacobian matrix at each vertex by solving a least-squares problem and derive its corresponding stretch tensor. Finally, to obtain the orientation-specific cortical surface expansion, we project the stretch tensor into the two orthogonal orientations separately. We have applied the proposed method to 30 healthy infants, and for the first time we revealed the orientation-specific longitudinal cortical surface expansion maps during the first postnatal year.

The neural correlates of mental arithmetic in adolescents: a longitudinal fNIRS study

BACKGROUND

Arithmetic processing in adults is known to rely on a frontal-parietal network. However, neurocognitive research focusing on the neural and behavioral correlates of arithmetic development has been scarce, even though the acquisition of arithmetic skills is accompanied by changes within the fronto-parietal network of the developing brain. Furthermore, experimental procedures are typically adjusted to constraints of functional magnetic resonance imaging, which may not reflect natural settings in which children and adolescents actually perform arithmetic. Therefore, we investigated the longitudinal neurocognitive development of processes involved in performing the four basic arithmetic operations in 19 adolescents. By using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, we were able to use an ecologically valid task, i.e., a written production paradigm.

RESULTS

A common pattern of activation in the bilateral fronto-parietal network for arithmetic processing was found for all basic arithmetic operations. Moreover, evidence was obtained for decreasing activation during subtraction over the course of 1 year in middle and inferior frontal gyri, and increased activation during addition and multiplication in angular and middle temporal gyri. In the self-paced block design, parietal activation in multiplication and left angular and temporal activation in addition were observed to be higher for simple than for complex blocks, reflecting an inverse effect of arithmetic complexity.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, the findings suggest that the brain network for arithmetic processing is already established in 12-14 year-old adolescents, but still undergoes developmental changes.

Factors contributing to the longitudinal development of social participation in individuals with cerebral palsy

AIMS

We aimed to determine factors associated with the longitudinal development of social participation in a Dutch population of individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) aged 1-24 years.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

For this multicentre prospective longitudinal study, 424 individuals with CP aged 1-24 years were recruited from various rehabilitation centers in The Netherlands. Social participation was measured with the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. We assessed associations with age, intellectual impairment, level of gross motor function, gender, type of CP, manual ability, epilepsy, hearing-, visual-, speech impairment and pain, internalizing- and externalizing behavioral problems, type of education and parental level of education. Each individual was measured 3 or 4 times. The time between measurements was 1 or 2 years.

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

Epilepsy and speech impairment were each independently associated with the longitudinal development of social participation. The effects were rather small and did not change with age. Also, a trend was found that children attending special education develop less favorably in social participation.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Our results might provide parents and caregivers with starting points to further develop tailored support for individuals with epilepsy, with speech impairment and/or attending special education at risk for suboptimal social participation.

Distributional learning has immediate and long-lasting effects

Evidence of distributional learning, a statistical learning mechanism centered on relative frequency of exposure to different tokens, has mainly come from short-term learning and therefore does not ostensibly address the development of important learning processes. The present longitudinal study examines both short- and long-term effects of distributional learning of phonetic categories on non-native sound discrimination over a 12-month period. Two groups of listeners were exposed to a two-minute distribution of auditory stimuli in which the most frequently presented tokens either approximated or exaggerated the natural production of the speech sounds, whereas a control group listened to a piece of classical music for the same length of time. Discrimination by listeners in the two distribution groups improved immediately after the short exposure, replicating previous results. Crucially, this improvement was maintained after six and 12 months, demonstrating that distributional learning has long-lasting effects.

Spatial distribution and longitudinal development of deep cortical sulcal landmarks in infants

Sulcal pits, the locally deepest points in sulci of the highly convoluted and variable cerebral cortex, are found to be spatially consistent across human adult individuals. It is suggested that sulcal pits are genetically controlled and have close relationships with functional areas. To date, the existing imaging studies of sulcal pits are mainly focused on adult brains, yet little is known about the spatial distribution and temporal development of sulcal pits in the first 2 years of life, which is the most dynamic and critical period of postnatal brain development. Studying sulcal pits during this period would greatly enrich our limited understandings of the origins and developmental trajectories of sulcal pits, and would also provide important insights into many neurodevelopmental disorders associated with abnormal cortical foldings. In this paper, by using surface-based morphometry, for the first time, we systemically investigated the spatial distribution and temporal development of sulcal pits in major cortical sulci from 73 healthy infants, each with three longitudinal 3T MR scans at term birth, 1 year, and 2 years of age. Our results suggest that the spatially consistent distributions of sulcal pits in major sulci across individuals have already existed at term birth and this spatial distribution pattern keeps relatively stable in the first 2 years of life, despite that the cerebral cortex expands dramatically and the sulcal depth increases considerably during this period. Specially, the depth of sulcal pits increases regionally heterogeneously, with more rapid growth in the high-order association cortex, including the prefrontal and temporal cortices, than the sensorimotor cortex in the first 2 years of life. Meanwhile, our results also suggest that there exist hemispheric asymmetries of the spatial distributions of sulcal pits in several cortical regions, such as the central, superior temporal and postcentral sulci, consistently from birth to 2 years of age, which likely has close relationships with the lateralization of brain functions of these regions. Measuring the dynamic longitudinal cortex development in infants by reconstruction of temporally consistent cortical surfaces

Quantitative measurement of the dynamic longitudinal cortex development during early postnatal stages is of great importance to understand the early cortical structural and functional development. Conventional methods usually reconstruct the cortical surfaces of longitudinal images from the same subject independently, which often generate longitudinally-inconsistent cortical surfaces and thus lead to inaccurate measurement of cortical changes, especially for vertex-wise mapping of cortical development. This paper aims to address this problem by presenting a method to reconstruct temporally-consistent cortical surfaces from longitudinal infant brain MR images, for accurate and consistent measurement of the dynamic cortex development in infants. Specifically, the longitudinal development of the inner cortical surface is first modeled by a deformable growth sheet with elasto-plasticity property to establish longitudinally smooth correspondences of the inner cortical surfaces. Then, the modeled longitudinal inner cortical surfaces are jointly deformed to locate both inner and outer cortical surfaces with a spatial-temporal deformable surface method. The method has been applied to 13 healthy infants, each with 6 serial MR scans acquired at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months and 18 months of age. Experimental results showed that our method with the incorporated longitudinal constraints can reconstruct the longitudinally-dynamic cortical surfaces from serial infant MR images more consistently and accurately than the previously published methods. By using our method, for the first time, we can characterize the vertex-wise longitudinal cortical thickness development trajectory at multiple time points in the first 18 months of life. Specifically, we found the highly age-related and regionally-heterogeneous developmental trajectories of the cortical thickness during this period, with the cortical thickness increased most from 3 to 6 months (16.2%) and least from 9 to 12 months (less than 0.1%). Specifically, the central sulcus only underwent significant increase of cortical thickness from 6 to 9 months and the occipital cortex underwent significant increase from 0 to 9 months, while the frontal, temporal and parietal cortices grew continuously in this first 18 months of life. The adult-like spatial patterns of cortical thickness were generally present at 18 months of age. These results provided detailed insights into the dynamic trajectory of the cortical thickness development in infants.
