Does the Menstrual Cycle Influence Aerobic Capacity in Endurance-Trained Women?

Purpose: The aim was to study if aerobic capacity varies during different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC) in endurance-trained female athletes. Methods: Ten endurance-trained eumenorrheic women performed a submaximal test followed by an incremental test until exhaustion three times during one MC, early follicular phase (EFP), late follicular phase (LFP), and midluteal phase (MLP). During the submaximal test, the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and utilization of fat and carbohydrates were analyzed; and, during the incremental test, VO2 peak, maximal heart rate, utilization of fat and carbohydrates, and RER were analyzed. Lactate levels were analyzed at rest, during the submaximal test, and after the incremental test. The anaerobic threshold was determined at RER = 1. Results: No significant differences (p < .05) between the MC phases were seen in a maximal heart rate or VO2peak. Similarly, VO2, heart rate, RER, fatty acid oxidation, and carbohydrate oxidation at 70, 80, 90, and 100% of VO2peak did not differ significantly between MC phases. There were no significant differences between these phases in resting lactate before the test or during the submaximal tests, though there was a significant difference in lactate concentration 3 minutes after the incremental test between the EFP and the LFP (p = .043). Conclusion: This study did not display variations in physiological parameters between EFP, LFP, and MLP, indicating similar aerobic capacity despite hormonal variations. This knowledge may be useful when planning for competition in aerobic events.

The role ovariectomies and/or the administration of artificial female sex hormones play in orthodontic tooth movement: A systematic review

The objective was to assess how ovariectomy or the administration of artificial female sex hormones affects orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) with fixed appliances. An electronic search of indexed databases was completed without language or time restrictions up to June 2022. The following eligibility criteria were utilized: (i) prospective original controlled clinical studies; (ii) experimental studies on animal models; (iii) subjects undergoing orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances; (iv) clearly defined control groups not undergoing ovariectomy or administration of artificial female sex hormone; and (v) studies with experimental groups receiving the intervention of interest (ovariectomy or artificial female sex hormone administration). Review articles, letters to the editor, case reports, case series, commentaries, cross-sectional studies, retrospective studies, and studies with no well-defined control group were excluded. The quality of the available evidence and the risk of bias within the studies were assessed. All disagreements were resolved via discussion. Seven animal studies were included in the systematic review. Five studies reported that ovariectomy increased the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. Two studies reported that the administration of artificial female sex hormones decreased the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. There is an association between ovariectomies and OTM and between the administration of artificial female sex hormones and OTM. The full extent of the association remains unclear due to the biases that are present and the length of time of orthodontic therapy.

Effect of time-restricted eating on sex hormone levels in premenopausal and postmenopausal females

OBJECTIVE

Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of time-restricted eating (TRE) on sex hormones in females. This study examined how TRE affects sex steroids in premenopausal and postmenopausal females.

METHODS

This is a secondary analysis of an 8-week TRE study (4- to 6-hour eating window) conducted in adults with obesity. Men and perimenopausal females were excluded. Females were classified into two groups based on menstrual status: premenopausal (n = 12) or postmenopausal (n = 11).

RESULTS

After 8 weeks, body weight decreased in premenopausal females (-3% ± 2%) and postmenopausal females (-4% ± 2%) (main effect of time, p < 0.001), with no difference between groups (no group × time interaction). Circulating levels of testosterone, androstenedione, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) did not change in either group (no group × time interaction). Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) concentrations decreased (p < 0.05) in premenopausal (-14% ± 32%) and postmenopausal females (-13% ± 34%; main effect of time, p = 0.03), with no difference between groups. Estradiol, estrone, and progesterone were measured only in postmenopausal females, and they remained unchanged.

CONCLUSIONS

In premenopausal females, androgens and SHBG remained unchanged during TRE, whereas DHEA decreased. In postmenopausal females, estrogens, progesterone, androgens, and SHBG did not change, but DHEA was reduced.

Menstrual phase influences cerebrovascular responsiveness in females but may not affect sex differences

Background and aims: Sex differences in the rate and occurrence of cerebrovascular diseases (e.g., stroke) indicate a role for female sex hormones (i.e., oestrogen and progesterone) in cerebrovascular function and regulation. However, it remains unclear how cerebrovascular function differs between the sexes, and between distinct phases of the menstrual cycle. This study aimed to compare cerebrovascular-CO₂ responsiveness in 1) females during the early follicular (EF), ovulatory (O) and mid-luteal (ML) phases of their menstrual cycle; and 2) males compared to females during phases of lower oestrogen (EF) and higher oestrogen (O). Methods: Eleven females (25 ± 5 years) complete experimental sessions in the EF (n = 11), O (n = 9) and ML (n = 11) phases of the menstrual cycle. Nine males (22 ± 3 years) completed two experimental sessions, approximately 2 weeks apart for comparison to females. Middle and posterior cerebral artery velocity (MCAv, PCAv) was measured at rest, during two stages of hypercapnia (2% and 5% CO₂ inhalation) and hypocapnia (voluntary hyperventilation to an end-tidal CO₂ of 30 and 24 mmHg). The linear slope of the cerebral blood velocity response to changes in end-tidal CO₂ was calculated to measure cerebrovascular-CO₂ responsiveness.. Results: In females, MCAv-CO₂ responsiveness to hypocapnia was lower during EF (-.78 ± .45 cm/s/mmHg) when compared to the O phase (-1.17 ± .52 cm/s/mmHg; p < .05) and the ML phase (-1.30 ± .82; p < .05). MCAv-CO₂ responsiveness to hypercapnia and hypo-to-hypercapnia, and PCAv-CO₂ responsiveness across the CO₂ range were similar between menstrual phases (p ≥ .20). MCAv-CO₂ responsiveness to hypo-to hypercapnia was greater in females compared to males (3.12 ± .91 cm/s/mmHg vs. 2.31 ± .46 cm/s/mmHg; p = .03), irrespective of menstrual phase (EF or O). Conclusion: Females during O and ML phases have an enhanced vasoconstrictive capacity of the MCA compared to the EF phase. Additionally, biological sex differences can influence cerebrovascular-CO₂ responsiveness, dependent on the insonated vessel.

Physiological interindividual variability in endogenous estradiol concentration does not influence adipose tissue and hepatic lipid kinetics in women

Objective

Increased triglyceride (TG) and apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB-100) concentrations in plasma are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women. Administration of some estrogen preparations raises plasma TG and apoB-100 concentrations by increasing hepatic very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) TG and apoB-100 secretion rates. However, the influence of physiological variation in endogenous estradiol on VLDL-TG and VLDL-apoB-100 metabolism and on free fatty acid (FFA) release into plasma (the major source of fatty acids for VLDL-TG production) is not known.

Design and methods

We measured basal VLDL-TG, VLDL-apoB-100, and plasma FFA kinetics by using stable isotopically labeled tracers in 36 eumenorrheic, premenopausal women (age: 33 ± 2 years, BMI: 31 ± 1 kg/m2; mean ± s.e.m.) during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle; participants were divided into two groups based on low (n = 18) or high (n = 18) plasma estradiol concentrations (defined as below or above the median value of 140 pmol/L in the whole group).

Results

Mean plasma estradiol concentration was >3-fold higher in the high-estradiol than in the low-estradiol group (299 ± 37 and 96 ± 7 pmol/L, P < 0.001); there was no difference in plasma progesterone concentrations between the two groups (P = 0.976). There were no significant differences in plasma FFA concentration, FFA rate of appearance in plasma, VLDL-TG and VLDL-apoB-100 concentrations, hepatic VLDL-TG and VLDL-apoB-100 secretion rates, VLDL-TG and VLDL-apoB-100 plasma clearance rates, and mean residence times (all P ≥ 0.45). No significant associations were found between plasma estradiol concentration and FFA, VLDL-TG, and VLDL-apoB-100 concentrations and kinetics (all P > 0.19).

Conclusions

Plasma estradiol concentration is not an important correlate of basal plasma FFA, VLDL-TG, and VLDL-apoB-100 kinetics in premenopausal women.

Are there sex differences in risk for exertional heat stroke? A translational approach

ABSTRACT

Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is a potentially fatal condition brought about by a combination of physical activity and heat stress and resulting in central nervous system dysfunction and organ damage. EHS impacts several hundred individuals each year ranging from military personnel, athletes, to occupational workers. Understanding the pathophysiology and risk factors can aid in reducing EHS across the globe. While we know there are differences between sexes in mechanisms of thermoregulation, there is currently not a clear understanding if/how those differences impact EHS risk. The purpose of this review is to assess the current status of the literature surrounding EHS from risk factors to treatment using both animal and human models. We use a translational approach, considering both animal and human research to elucidate the possible influence of female sex hormones on temperature regulation and performance in the heat and highlight the specific areas with limited research. While more work is necessary to comprehensively understand these differences, the current research presented provides a good framework for future investigations. Estrogen to Progesterone Ratio and Fluid Regulatory Responses to Varying Degrees and Methods of Dehydration

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between volume regulatory biomarkers and the estrogen to progesterone ratio (E:P) prior to and following varying methods and degrees of dehydration. Ten women (20 ± 1 year, 56.98 ± 7.25 kg, 164 ± 6 cm, 39.59 ± 2.96 mL•kg•min⁻¹) completed four intermittent exercise trials (1.5 h, 33.8 ± 1.3°C, 49.5 ± 4.3% relative humidity). Testing took place in two hydration conditions, dehydrated via 24-h fluid restriction (Dehy, USG > 1.020) and euhydrated (Euhy, USG ≤ 1.020), and in two phases of the menstrual cycle, the late follicular phase (days 10–13) and midluteal phase (days 18–22). Change in body mass (%BMΔ), serum copeptin concentration, and plasma osmolality (P_osm) were assessed before and after both dehydration stimuli (24-h fluid restriction and exercise heat stress). Serum estrogen and progesterone were analyzed pre-exercise only. Estrogen concentration did not differ between phases or hydration conditions. Progesterone was significantly elevated in luteal compared to follicular in both hydration conditions (Dehy—follicular: 1.156 ± 0.31, luteal: 5.190 ± 1.56 ng•mL⁻¹, P < 0.05; Euhy—follicular: 0.915 ± 0.18, luteal: 4.498 ± 1.38 ng·mL⁻¹, P < 0.05). As expected, E:P was significantly greater in the follicular phase compared to luteal in both hydration conditions (Dehy—F:138.94 ± 89.59, L: 64.22 ± 84.55, P < 0.01; Euhy—F:158.13 ± 70.15, L: 50.98 ± 39.69, P < 0.01, [all •10³]). Copeptin concentration was increased following 24-h fluid restriction and exercise heat stress (mean change: 18 ± 9.4, P < 0.01). We observed a possible relationship of lower E:P and higher copeptin concentration following 24-h fluid restriction (r = −0.35, P = 0.054). While these results did not reach the level of statistical significance, these data suggest that the differing E:P ratio may alter fluid volume regulation during low levels of dehydration but have no apparent impact after dehydrating exercise in the heat.

[Treatment strategy for pregnancy epulis]

Pregnancy epulis is a tumor-like lesion with high prevalence in China. The local lesion, the general condition of the pregnant patient, and the complications during treatment should be taken into consideration when making a treatment plan for pregnancy epulis. In this study, three representative pregnancy epulis cases were presented, and related studies at home and aboard were reviewed to summarize the etiology, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pregnancy epulis and share the clinical experience in the treatment of pregnancy epulis.

Female Sex Hormone Effects on the Vasculature: Considering the Validity of Restricting Study Inclusion to Low-Hormone Phases

Many studies of vascular function limit the testing of premenopausal female participants to periods when female sex hormones, either endogenous or exogenous, are at their lowest concentration. This practice, when not part of the specific research question, may limit data surrounding the predominant physiological state of premenopausal females and pose a threat to external validity. In this Perspective, we briefly review the literature on the effect of female sex hormones on vascular function and discuss when limiting experimental testing to a certain phase of the menstrual cycle (MC) or oral contraceptive (OC) use may be appropriate. The goal of this Perspective is to open a dialog that may enhance data validity and the overall understanding of vascular function in premenopausal females.

Female Sex Hormones and Cardiac Pressure Overload Independently Contribute to the Cardiogenic Dementia Profile in Yucatan Miniature Swine

Post-menopausal women with heart failure (HF) frequently exhibit cardiogenic dementia. Using a pre-clinical swine model of post-menopausal HF, we recently demonstrated that experimental menopause (ovariectomy; OVX) and HF (6-month cardiac pressure overload/aortic banding; AB) independently altered cerebral vasomotor control and together impaired cognitive function. The purpose of this study was to examine the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus tissues from these animals to assess whether OVX and HF are associated with neurologic alterations that may contribute to cardiogenic dementia. We hypothesized that OVX and HF would independently alter neuronal cell signaling in swine with post-menopausal cardiogenic dementia. Immunoblot analyses revealed OVX was associated with reduced estrogen receptor-α in both brain regions and HF tended to exacerbate OVX-induced deficits in the hippocampus. Further, OVX was associated with a reduction in the ratio of phosphorylated:total Akt and ERK in the hippocampus as well as decreased total Akt and synaptophysin in the prefrontal cortex. In contrast, HF was associated with a trend toward reduced phosphorylated:total ERK in the prefrontal cortex. In addition, HF was associated with decreased β-amyloid (1-38) in the prefrontal cortex and increased β-amyloid (1-38) in the hippocampus. Regional brain lipid analysis revealed OVX tended to increase total, saturated, and monounsaturated fatty acid content in the prefrontal cortex, with the greatest magnitude of change occurring in the AB-OVX group. The data from this study suggest that OVX and HF are independently associated with regional-specific neurologic changes in the brain that contribute to the cardiogenic dementia profile in this model. This pre-clinical swine model may be a useful tool for better understanding post-menopausal cardiogenic dementia pathology and developing novel therapies.

The complexity of interactions between female sex hormones and Chlamydia trachomatis infections

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This review focuses specifically on the mechanisms by which female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, affect Chlamydia trachomatis infections in vivo and in vitro.

RECENT FINDINGS

Recent data support previous work indicating that estrogen enhances chlamydial development via multiple mechanisms. Progesterone negatively impacts Chlamydia infections also through multiple mechanisms, particularly by altering the immune response. Conflicting data exist regarding the effect of synthetic hormones, such as those found in hormonal contraceptives, on chlamydial infections.

SUMMARY

Numerous studies over the years have indicated that female sex hormones affect C. trachomatis infection. However, we still do not have a clear understanding of how these hormones alter Chlamydia disease transmission and progression. The studies reviewed here indicate that there are many variables that determine the outcome of Chlamydia/hormone interactions, including: 1) the specific hormone, 2) hormone concentration, 3) cell type or area of the genital tract, 4) hormone responsiveness of cell lines, and 5) animal models.

Changes in premenstrual symptoms in women starting or discontinuing use of oral contraceptives

It is not clear whether oral contraceptive (OC) treatment affects premenstrual symptoms in women. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in premenstrual symptoms (PMS) in women starting to use or discontinuing the use of OCs. Twenty-four healthy women with no previous diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder were included in this study with a prospective crossover design. Nineteen women completed daily ratings of somatic and mood symptoms during two hormonally different cycles, during a normal menstrual cycle and while using OCs. The menstrual cycle phases were hormonally verified and the low-dose, monophasic OCs were used in a 21/7 regimen. The onset of OC use significantly decreased premenstrual somatic symptoms, but it did not affect mood symptoms. In the women who discontinued OC use, no significant changes in neither somatic nor mood symptoms appeared in the premenstrual phase.

Oral contraceptives augment the exercise pressor reflex during isometric handgrip exercise

We sought to determine whether oral contraception alters the gender-related differences observed in the exercise pressor reflex during isometric handgrip exercise. Fifteen men, fifteen normally menstruating women (WomenNM), and fifteen women taking monophasic oral contraceptives (WomenOC) completed two trials of a 3-min isometric handgrip exercise protocol performed at 30% of their maximal voluntary contraction: (1) where arterial occlusion was applied to the previously exercising arm during a 3-min recovery period (Occlusion trial); (2) where no arterial occlusion was applied during recovery (Control trial). Handgrip exercise elicited greater increases in mean arterial pressure (MAP) in MEN compared to both female groups (P < 0.05), and in WomenOC compared to WomenNM in both trials (P = 0.01, P = 0.03). After 3 min of recovery, sBP was 12% (P = 0.01) and 9% (P = 0.02) higher in the Occlusion trial when compared to the Control trial for MEN and WomenOC. Conversely, arterial occlusion in recovery from handgrip did not sustain elevated sBP in the Occlusion trial, and sBP returned to recovery levels not different to the Control trial, in WomenNM (P = 0.41). These data indicate that gender-related differences in the metaboreflex during isometric handgrip exercise exist between men and normally menstruating women, but are blunted when men are compared to women taking oral contraceptives. We conclude that the suppression of 17β-estradiol and/or progestogen in women via the administration of oral contraceptives attenuates sex-related differences in the metaboreflex during isometric handgrip exercise.

Loss of Female Sex Hormones Exacerbates Cerebrovascular and Cognitive Dysfunction in Aortic Banded Miniswine Through a Neuropeptide Y-Ca2+-Activated Potassium Channel-Nitric Oxide Mediated Mechanism

Background

Postmenopausal women represent the largest cohort of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and vascular dementia represents the most common form of dementia in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Therefore, we tested the hypotheses that the combination of cardiac pressure overload (aortic banding [AB]) and the loss of female sex hormones (ovariectomy [OVX]) impairs cerebrovascular control and spatial memory.

Methods and Results

Female Yucatan miniswine were separated into 4 groups (n=7 per group): (1) control, (2) AB, (3) OVX, and (4) AB‐OVX. Pigs underwent OVX and AB at 7 and 8 months of age, respectively. At 14 months, cerebral blood flow velocity and spatial memory (spatial hole‐board task) were lower in the OVX groups (P<0.05), with significant impairments in the AB‐OVX group (P<0.05). Resting carotid artery β stiffness and vascular resistance during central hypovolemia were increased in the AB‐OVX group (P<0.05), and blood flow recovery after central hypovolemia was reduced in both OVX groups (P<0.05). Isolated pial artery (pressure myography) vasoconstriction to neuropeptide Y was greatest in the AB‐OVX group (P<0.05), and vasodilation to the Ca²⁺‐activated potassium channel α‐subunit agonist NS‐1619 was impaired in both AB groups (P<0.05). The ratio of phosphorylated endothelial nitric oxide synthase:total endothelial nitric oxide synthase was depressed and Ca²⁺‐activated potassium channel α‐subunit protein was increased in AB groups (P<0.05).

Conclusions

Mechanistically, impaired cerebral blood flow control in experimental heart failure may be the result of heightened neuropeptide Y–induced vasoconstriction along with reduced vasodilation associated with decreased Ca²⁺‐activated potassium channel function and impaired nitric oxide signaling, the effects of which are exacerbated in the absence of female sex hormones.

Effects of Female Sex Hormones on Susceptibility to HSV-2 in Vaginal Cells Grown in Air-Liquid Interface

The lower female reproductive tract (FRT) is comprised of the cervix and vagina, surfaces that are continuously exposed to a variety of commensal and pathogenic organisms. Sexually transmitted viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), have to traverse the mucosal epithelial lining of the FRT to establish infection. The majority of current culture systems that model the host-pathogen interactions in the mucosal epithelium have limitations in simulating physiological conditions as they employ a liquid-liquid interface (LLI), in which both apical and basolateral surfaces are submerged in growth medium. We designed the current study to simulate in vivo conditions by growing an immortalized vaginal epithelial cell line (Vk2/E6E7) in culture with an air-liquid interface (ALI) and examined the effects of female sex hormones on their growth, differentiation, and susceptibility to HSV-2 under these conditions, in comparison to LLI cultures. ALI conditions induced Vk2/E6E7 cells to grow into multi-layered cultures compared to the monolayers present in LLI conditions. Vk2 cells in ALI showed higher production of cytokeratin in the presence of estradiol (E2), compared to cells grown in progesterone (P4). Cells grown under ALI conditions were exposed to HSV-2-green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the highest infection and replication was observed in the presence of P4. Altogether, this study suggests that ALI cultures more closely simulate the in vivo conditions of the FRT compared to the conventional LLI cultures. Furthermore, under these conditions P4 was found to confer higher susceptibility to HSV-2 infection in vaginal cells. The vaginal ALI culture system offers a better alternative to study host-pathogen interactions.

Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Regulates HIV-1 Uptake and Transcytosis but Not Replication in Primary Genital Epithelial Cells, Resulting in Enhanced T-Cell Infection

Although clinical and experimental evidence indicates that female sex hormones and hormonal contraceptives regulate susceptibility to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Genital epithelial cells (GECs) are the first cells to encounter HIV during sexual transmission and their interaction with HIV may determine the outcome of exposure. This is the first report that HIV uptake by GECs increased significantly in the presence of the hormonal contraceptive medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and progesterone and that uptake occurred primarily via endocytosis. No productive infection was detected, but endocytosed virus was released into apical and basolateral compartments. Significantly higher viral transcytosis was observed in the presence of MPA. In GEC and T-cell cocultures, maximum viral replication in T cells was observed in the presence of MPA, which also broadly upregulated chemokine production by GECs. These results suggest that MPA may play a significant role in regulating susceptibility to HIV.

Changes in the diameter and valve closure time of leg veins across the menstrual cycle

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes (if any) in the diameter and valve closure time of the lower limb veins in healthy young nulliparous women at different phases of the menstrual cycle.

METHODS

Fifty-three young nulliparous women were asked to undergo clinical evaluations and duplex ultrasound examinations of both lower limb veins to monitor changes in the vein diameter and valve closure time at different phases of their menstrual cycles. The vein diameter on B-mode imaging and valve closure time on pulsed Doppler tracing were calculated at days 1 to 4, 14 to 16, and 25 to 28 of the menstrual cycle. Freidman and related samples Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to determine time-related changes in venous function.

RESULTS

The volunteers' mean age ± SD was 20.60 ± 1.90 years, and their mean body mass index was 23.90 ± 4.90 kg/m(2). There was a gradual increase in the vein diameter and valve closure time at the specified phases of the menstrual cycle. Friedman and related samples Wilcoxon signed rank tests for venous segment diameter and valve closure time changes between the different phases of the menstrual cycle were performed and showed statistical significance for each venous segment within each limb (P = .003-.025). Also, when adjusted for body mass index, statistical significance existed for the same venous segments in the same limbs (P =.001-.049). There was no statistical significance for the same venous segments at the same phase of the menstrual cycle between limbs (related samples Wilcoxon signed rank test: P =.079-.97).

CONCLUSIONS

During the menstrual cycle, the lower limb veins show an increase in their diameter and valve closure time. These changes are probably mediated by the female sex hormones.

Estradiol and progesterone modulate spontaneous sleep patterns and recovery from sleep deprivation in ovariectomized rats

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Women undergo hormonal changes both naturally during their lives and as a result of sex hormone treatments. The objective of this study was to gain more knowledge about how these hormones affect sleep and responses to sleep loss.

DESIGN

Rats were ovariectomized and implanted subcutaneously with Silastic capsules containing oil vehicle, 17 beta-estradiol and/or progesterone. After 2 weeks, sleep/wake states were recorded during a 24-h baseline period, 6 h of total sleep deprivation induced by gentle handling during the light phase, and an 18-h recovery period.

MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS

At baseline and particularly in the dark phase, ovariectomized rats treated with estradiol or estradiol plus progesterone spent more time awake at the expense of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) and/or REMS, whereas those given progesterone alone spent less time in REMS than ovariectomized rats receiving no hormones. Following sleep deprivation, all rats showed rebound increases in NREMS and REMS, but the relative increase in REMS was larger in females receiving hormones, especially high estradiol. In contrast, the normal increase in NREMS EEG delta power (an index of NREMS intensity) during recovery was attenuated by all hormone treatments.

CONCLUSIONS

Estradiol promotes arousal in the active phase in sleep-satiated rats, but after sleep loss, both estradiol and progesterone selectively facilitate REMS rebound while reducing NREMS intensity. These results indicate that effects of ovarian hormones on recovery sleep differ from those on spontaneous sleep. The hormonal modulation of recovery sleep architecture may affect recovery of sleep related functions after sleep loss.
