Abstract
Background In the absence of a specific treatment for COVID-19, preventive measures have been implemented to control this pandemic and vaccination is one of them. However, it is crucial to verify the safety and efficiency of every vaccine. The aim was to determinate the predictive factors of side effects and reinfection after COVID-19 vaccine. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2022 among Tunisians infected with COVID-19 between March 2020 and February 2022, using an online self-administered questionnaire. We conducted univariate and multivariate analyses using binary stepwise logistic regression. Results A total of 1541 was selected from 1911 individuals. Comorbidities affected a quarter of the population (22.3%). Before the initial infection, 39.3% had received full vaccination, and 8.7% had received partial vaccination. By February 2022, the majority (82.9%) had received at least two vaccine doses. The reinfection rate was 30.6%. All vaccines prior to the first infection was identified as a protective factor against reinfection. Inactivated virus vaccinations were less likely to induce adverse effects. Conclusion ach vaccine has its own set of advantages and disadvantages: mRNA-based vaccines had a higher incidence of side effects but all vaccines provided better protection against reinfection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of coronary artery spasm (CAS) was extended beyond variant angina to ischemic heart disease in general, including effort angina, unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction (MI) and sudden death. It is difficult and cumbersome to examine CAS during coronary angiography. Risk factors for CAS include smoking and genetic polymorphisms. AIM We aimed to investigate the association of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) polymorphism with catheter-induced CAS in Egyptian patients who undergo coronary angiography. METHODS This is a case-control study. Two hundred patients with chronic coronary artery disease who underwent elective coronary angiography were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups: the non-CAS group (100 patients) and the CAS group (100 patients). The subjects were genotyped to the -572 C>G (rs 1800796) polymorphism of the IL-6 gene by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS We found that patients with CAS have more risk factors for atherosclerosis compared to those without CAS. Smoking, the IL-6 GG genotype, and the G allele were independent risk factors for CAS. CONCLUSION We concluded that the GG genotype and G allele of the IL-6 gene are associated with CAS. Smoking, the GG genotype, and the G allele of the IL-6 gene are independent predictors of catheter-induced CAS.

Abstract
The clinical presentation of COVID-19 shows high variability among individuals, which is partly due to genetic factors. The OAS1/2/3 cluster has been found to be strongly associated with COVID-19 severity. We examined this locus in the Moroccan population for the occurrence of the critical variant rs10774671 and its respective haplotype blocks. The frequency of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the cluster of OAS immunity genes in 157 unrelated individuals of Moroccan origin was determined using an in-house exome database. OAS1 exon 6 of 71 SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals with asymptomatic/mild disease and 74 with moderate/severe disease was sequenced by the Sanger method. The genotypic, allelic, and haplotype frequencies of three SNPs were compared between these two groups. Finally, males in our COVID-19 series were genotyped for the Berber-specific marker E-M81. The prevalence of the OAS1 rs10774671-G allele in present-day Moroccans was found to be 40.4%, which is similar to that found in Europeans. However, it was found equally in both the Neanderthal GGG haplotype and the African GAC haplotype, with a frequency of 20% each. These two haplotypes, and hence the rs10774671-G allele, were significantly associated with protection against severe COVID-19 (p = 0.034, p = 0.041, and p = 0.008, respectively). Surprisingly, in men with the Berber-specific uniparental markers, the African haplotype was absent, while the prevalence of the Neanderthal haplotype was similar to that in Europeans. The protective rs10774671-G allele of OAS1 was found only in the Neanderthal haplotype in Berbers, the indigenous people of North Africa, suggesting that this region may have served as a stepping-stone for the passage of hominids to other continents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thymus algeriensis Boiss. et Reut. is one of the most widespread North African species of the genus Thymus L. The species is subshrub growing primarily in subtropical biome of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. In Tunisia, the plant species is under high pressure of anthropogenic activities including over-collecting. The assessment of genetic diversity and population structure of T. algeriensis is a pioneer step to retrace its evolutionary history and to perform appropriate conservation strategies of the plant species. METHODS AND RESULTS Seven wild populations growing, widely, in different bioclimatic zones were selected and analysed using two molecular markers systems. Fifteen Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) and fifteen Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSRs) were used to characterize genetically 140 different genotypes. The results showed a high molecular variation within populations and among the studied genotypes. The intra-populations genetic diversity revealed by SSRs was higher (P = 80.95%, Na = 2.143 and He = 0.364) than that based on ISSRs (P = 78.12%, Na = 1.632, He = 0.265 and I = 0.398). As demonstrated by inbreeding coefficients, a significant level of differentiation and a low level of gene flow were detected among studied populations (FST = 0.161 for SSRs and ΦST = 0.197 for ISSRs). Furthermore, the results of ISSRs marker suggest land strips as barriers in population genetic structure. While SSRs marker reflects a relatively structured bioclimatic patterns of studied populations. The Bayesian analysis showed a specific adaptation of populations to local environments. CONCLUSIONS The used molecular markers (ISSRs and SSRs) seem to be effective in deciphering genetic polymorphism of Tunisian genotypes of T. algeriensis. Therefore, the genetic structure of the studied genotypes could constitute a starting point for further conservation, characterization and breeding programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease with chronic inflammation. Its pathogenesis involves immunological, genetic, and environmental factors. We investigate the association between Tumor Necrosis Factor α Protein 3 (TNFAIP3), Interleukin 10 (IL10), Tumor Necrosis Factor α (TNF α), and Interleukin 17 F (IL17F) polymorphisms with susceptibility to RA. METHODS AND RESULTS 191 patients with RA diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/ European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) classification and 190 healthy subjects were recruited. Rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPA), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Genotyping of the polymorphisms was performed by real-time PCR. Analysis of the allelic frequencies of TNFAIP3 showed a positive association OR (95% CI) = 1.46 (1.01-2.09); p = 0.04, but failed to meet the criteria of significance after Bonferroni Correction. The genotypic and allelic distribution of the IL10, IL17F, and TNFα showed no significant difference when comparing the RA group with controls. Furthermore, the genotype codominant model shows a moderate positive association in the presence of ACPA (OR (95% CI) = 2.82 (1.22-6.24); p = 0.01. None of the polymorphisms studied was associated with RF and CRP production. CONCLUSION Our results show that there is a tendency for the AG genotype of IL10-1082 to be associated with the production of ACPA in patients with RA. None of the variants studied were associated with RA susceptibility in Algerians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Cannabis Abuse Screening Test (CAST) is a widely used screening tool for identifying patterns of cannabis use that have negative health or social consequences for both the user and others involved. This brief screening instrument has been translated into multiple languages, and several studies examining its psychometric properties have been published. However, studies on the factorial validity and psychometric properties of a Moroccan version of the CAST are not yet available. The objective of this study is to validate the CAST, translated, and adapted to the Moroccan Arabic dialect among persons with cannabis use. METHODS A total of 370 participants from an addictology center in Fez City, were selected over two phases to form the study sample. First, in phase I, exploratory factor analysis was employed to evaluate the factor structure in the pilot sample (n1 = 150). Subsequently, in the second phase (Phase II), confirmatory factor analysis was utilized to confirm this structure in the validation sample (n2 = 220). All statistical analyses were carried out using the R program. RESULTS The CFA unveiled a three-factor structure that showed a good overall fit (χ2/df = 2.23, RMSEA = 0.07, SRMR = 0.02, CFI = 0.99, NFI = 0.98) and satisfactory local parameters (standardized factor loadings between 0.72 and 0.88). The model demonstrates satisfactory reliability and convergent validity, as evidenced by the acceptable values of composite reliability (CR) (0.76-0.88) and average variance extracted (AVE) (0.62-0.78), respectively. The square roots of the AVE exceeded the correlations of the factor pairs, and the heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) ratio of the correlation values was below 0.85, indicating acceptable discriminant validity. CONCLUSION The reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity tests all demonstrated that the Moroccan version of the CAST performed well and can be considered a valid tool for screening of problematic cannabis use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Few studies have evaluated the health of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) women and children in the United States. Objectives were to determine the odds of well-visits, preventive behaviors during pregnancy, and low birthweight among foreign-born non-Hispanic MENA women and children compared to their US- and foreign-born non-Hispanic White counterparts after adjusting for covariates (hereafter, reported as MENA and White). METHODS We analyzed 2000-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (411,709 women, 311,961 children). Outcomes included well-woman visits (past 12 months); dentist visits (past 6 months) and current smoking among pregnant women; and low, moderately low, and very low birthweight among children. Covariates included age, family income, and health insurance for children. Education and marital status were also evaluated among women. RESULTS Over half (53.4%) of foreign-born MENA women were of childbearing age (ages 18-45) compared to 47.7% US-born and 43.2% foreign-born White women. The odds of completing a well-women visit were 0.73 times lower (95% CI = 0.38-0.89) among foreign-born MENA women compared to US-born White women after adjusting for age, education, and marital status. There was no statistically significant difference in dental visits between groups. No foreign-born MENA pregnant women reported current smoking. Foreign-born MENA children had higher odds of low (OR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.16-2.35) and moderately low birthweight (OR = 1.78; 95% CI = 1.19-2.66) compared to US-born White children in adjusted models. DISCUSSION MENA women and children are classified as White by the federal government. Our results highlight that the health of foreign-born MENA women and children differ from their White counterparts.

Abstract
Adverse drug reactions (ADR) represent a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality, imposing a substantial financial burden. Genetic ancestry plays a crucial role in drug response. The aim of this study is to characterize the genetic variability of selected pharmacogenes involved with ADR in Tunisians and Italians, with a comparative analysis against global populations. A cohort of 135 healthy Tunisians and 737 Italians were genotyped using a SNP array. Variants located in 25 Very Important Pharmacogenes implicated in ADR were extracted from the genotyping data. Distribution analysis of common variants in Tunisian and Italian populations in comparison to 24 publicly available worldwide populations was performed using PLINK and R software. Results from Principle Component and ADMIXTURE analyses showed a high genetic similarity among Mediterranean populations, distinguishing them from Sub-Saharan African and Asian populations. The Fst comparative analysis identified 27 variants exhibiting significant differentiation between the studied populations. Among these variants, four SNPs rs622342, rs3846662, rs7294, rs5215 located in SLC22A1, HMGCR, VKORC1 and KCNJ11 genes respectively, are reported to be associated with ethnic variability in drug responses. In conclusion, correlating the frequencies of genotype risk variants with their associated ADRs would enhance drug outcomes and the implementation of personalized medicine in the studied populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Estimation of HLA (Human leukocyte Antigen) alleles' frequencies in populations is essential to explore their ethnic origin. Anthropologic studies of central Tunisian population were rarely reported. Then, in this work, we aimed to explore the origin of central Tunisian population using HLA alleles and haplotypes frequencies. METHODS HLA class I (A, B, C) and HLA class II (DRB1, DQA1, DQB1) loci genotyping of 272 healthy unrelated organ donors was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Sequence Specific Oligonucleotide (PCR-SSO). We compared central Tunisians with other populations (Arabs, Berbers, Mediterraneans, Europeans, Africans, etc.) using alleles and haplotypes frequencies, genetic distances, Neighbour-Joining dendrogram and correspondence analysis. RESULTS Among the 19 HLA A alleles, the 26 HLA B alleles, the 13 HLA C alleles, the 15 HLA DRB1 alleles, the 6 HLA DQA1 alleles and the 5 HLA DQB1 alleles identified in the studied population, HLA A*02 (22.8%), HLA B*50 (13.1%), HLA C*06 (21.8%), HLA DRB1*07 (17.8%), HLA DQA1*01 (32.1%) and HLA DQB1*03 (31.6%) were the most frequent alleles. The extended haplotypes HLA A*02-B*50-C*06-DRB1*07-DQA1*02-DQB1*02 (1.97%) was the most frequent HLA six-loci haplotype. CONCLUSION Central Tunisians were very close to other Tunisian populations, to Iberians and North Africans. They were rather distant from sub-Saharan populations and eastern Mediterraneans especially Arabs although the strong cultural and religious impact of Arabs in this population.

Abstract
Liver cancer, which ranks sixth globally and third in cancer-related deaths, is caused by chronic liver disorders and a variety of risk factors. Despite therapeutic improvements, the prognosis for Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate for advanced cases of less than 12%. Although there is a noticeable decrease in the frequency of cases, liver cancer remains a significant worldwide health concern, with estimates surpassing one million cases by 2025. The prevalence of HCC has increased in Egypt, and it includes several neoplasms with distinctive messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles. In HCC patients, certain miRNAs, such as miRNA-483-5P and miRNA-21, are upregulated, whereas miRNA-155 is elevated in HCV-infected people, encouraging hepatocyte proliferation. Short noncoding RNAs called miRNAs in circulation have the potential as HCC diagnostic and prognostic markers. This paper proposed a model for examining circulating miRNAs as diagnostic and predictive markers for HCC in Egyptian patients and their clinical and pathological characteristics. The proposed HCC detection model consists of three main phases: data preprocessing phase, feature selection based on the proposed Binary African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (BAVO) phase, and finally, classification as well as cross-validation phase. The first phase namely the data preprocessing phase tackle the main problems associated with the adopted datasets. In the feature selection based on the proposed BAVO algorithm phase, a new binary version of the BAVO swarm-based algorithm is introduced to select the relevant markers for HCC. Finally, in the last phase, namely the classification and cross-validation phase, the support vector machine and k-folds cross-validation method are utilized. The proposed model is evaluated on three studies on Egyptians who had HCC. A comparison between the proposed model and traditional statistical studies is reported to demonstrate the superiority of using the machine learning model for evaluating circulating miRNAs as diagnostic markers of HCC. The specificity and sensitivity for differentiation of HCC cases in comparison with the statistical-based method for the first study were 98% against 88% and 99% versus 92%, respectively. The second study revealed the sensitivity and specificity were 97.78% against 90% and 98.89% versus 92.5%, respectively. The third study reported 83.2% against 88.8% and 95.80% versus 92.4%, respectively. Additionally, the results show that circulating miRNA-483-5p, 21, and 155 may be potential new prognostic and early diagnostic biomarkers for HCC.

Abstract
Admixture mapping has been useful in identifying genetic variations linked to phenotypes, adaptation and diseases. Copy number variations (CNVs) represents genomic structural variants spanning large regions of chromosomes reaching several megabases. In this investigation, the "Canary" algorithm was applied to 102 Tunisian samples and 991 individuals from eleven HapMap III populations to genotype 1279 copy number polymorphisms (CNPs). In this present work, we investigate the Tunisian population structure using the CNP makers previously identified among Tunisian. The study revealed that Sub-Saharan African populations exhibited the highest diversity with the highest proportions of allelic CNPs. Among all the African populations, Tunisia showed the least diversity. Individual ancestry proportions computed using STRUCTURE analysis revealed a major European component among Tunisians with lesser contribution from Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Population structure analysis indicated the genetic proximity with Europeans and noticeable distance from the Sub-Saharan African and East Asian clusters. Seven genes harbouring Tunisian high-frequent CNPs were identified known to be associated with 9 Mendelian diseases and/or phenotypes. Functional annotation of genes under selection highlighted a noteworthy enrichment of biological processes to receptor pathway and activity as well as glutathione metabolism. Additionally, pathways of potential concern for health such as drug metabolism, infectious diseases and cancers exhibited significant enrichment. The distinctive genetic makeup of the Tunisians might have been influenced by various factors including natural selection and genetic drift, resulting in the development of distinct genetic variations playing roles in specific biological processes. Our research provides a justification for focusing on the exclusive genome organization of this population and uncovers previously overlooked elements of the genome.

Abstract
Stunting remains a significant public health issue among North African children, even though significant progress has been made in reducing hunger and poverty. This study aimed to identify factors associated with stunting among children in four North African countries (Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, and Tunisia). A logistic regression model adjusted for clustering and sampling weights was used to identify factors associated with childhood stunting. It was found that the prevalence of stunting in Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, and Tunisia was 9.7%(95% CI: 9.1, 10.3), 21.1% (95% CI: 19.8, 22.5), 33.8% (95% CI: 32.7, 34.9), and 8.2% (95% CI: 7.3, 9.2), respectively. Stunting was more common among children from Sudan and Egypt. Our analysis showed that a low wealth index, being a boy, low BMI, dietary diversity <5 foods, and low birth weight were associated with stunting from 0 to 23 months; however, rural residency, a low-educated mother, low BMI, family size, and diarrhea were associated with stunting from 24 to 59 months. A collaborative approach that prioritizes maternal health and nutrition, invests in struggling families, and customizes interventions to meet the specific needs of each North African country is essential for eradicating undernutrition by 2030.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The strength of the association between obesity and oral health is still indecisive. OBJECTIVE The objectives of the study were to compare some oral-health data between two groups involving obese (OG) and normal weight (NWG) participants and determine the influencing factors of the periodontal probing depth (PPD). METHODS This was a cross-sectional study including 67 Tunisian adults [OG (n = 33, body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2 ), NWG (n = 34, BMI: 18.5-25.0 kg/m2 )]. The plaque level was recorded using the plaque index (PI). Gingival index (GI) was used to evaluate gingival inflammation. The depths of the sulci/pockets were probed using a periodontal probe. Stimulated saliva was collected for 5 min, and salivary flow rate (SFR) was determined. Salivary baseline pH (SBpH) was measured. A multivariable regression analysis was performed between PPD and some independent variables [i.e. obesity status, age, sex, socioeconomic status, systemic diseases and PI data]. RESULTS The OG and NWG were age- and sex-matched and included comparable percentages of participants with systemic diseases (27.3 vs. 29.4%, respectively). The OG included a higher percentage of participants having a low socioeconomic status (87.9 vs. 64.7%, respectively). Compared with the NWG, the OG: (i) had comparable values of daily toothbrushing frequency, PI, GI and tooth mobility, (ii) included comparable percentages of irregular brushers, of participants with periodontitis, PI classes [0-1]and [1-2]; and GI classes [0-1], [1-2] and [2, 3]; (iii) had a higher PPD (2.02 ± 0.41 vs. 2.35 ± 0.22 mm, respectively), (iv) had lower SBpH (7.59 ± 0.21 vs. 7.45 ± 0.22, respectively) and SFR (1.98 ± 0.28 vs. 1.60 ± 0.32 mL/mn, respectively) and (v) included a higher percentage of participants having a PI class [2, 3] (67.6 vs. 87.9%, respectively). The multivariable regression analysis revealed that only obesity status, age and PI classes influenced the PPD, altogether explained 29.62% of the PPD variance. CONCLUSION Obesity poses a risk for oral health, and obese adults had altered PPD and lower BSpH and SFR. Dentists should make obese patients aware of the health risks of obesity in an attempt to reduce the potential oral complications associated with this epidemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ethnic minorities living in high-income countries have been disproportionately affected by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in terms of infection rates, hospitalisations, and deaths; however, less is known about long COVID in these populations. Our aim was to examine the risk of long COVID and associated symptoms among ethnic minorities. METHODS AND FINDINGS We used nationwide register-based cohort data on individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 aged ≥18 years (n = 2,287,175) between January 2020 and August 2022 in Denmark. We calculated the risk of long COVID diagnosis and long COVID symptoms among ethnic minorities compared with native Danes using multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression and logistic regression, respectively. Among individuals who were first time diagnosed with COVID-19 during the study period, 39,876 (1.7%) were hospitalised and 2,247,299 (98.3%) were nonhospitalised individuals. Of the diagnosed COVID-19 cases, 1,952,021 (85.3%) were native Danes and 335,154 (14.7%) were ethnic minorities. After adjustment for age, sex, civil status, education, family income, and Charlson comorbidity index, ethnic minorities from North Africa (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.12,1.79], p = 0.003), Middle East (aHR 1.38, 95% CI [1.24,1.55], p < 0.001), Eastern Europe (aHR 1.35, 95% CI [1.22,1.49], p < 0.001), and Asia (aHR 1.23, 95% CI [1.09,1.40], p = 0.001) had significantly greater risk of long COVID diagnosis than native Danes. In the analysis by largest countries of origin, the greater risks of long COVID diagnosis were found in people of Iraqi origin (aHR 1.56, 95% CI [1.30,1.88], p < 0.001), people of Turkish origin (aHR 1.42, 95% CI [1.24,1.63], p < 0.001), and people of Somali origin (aHR 1.42, 95% CI [1.07,1.91], p = 0.016). A significant factor associated with an increased risk of long COVID diagnosis was COVID-19 hospitalisation. The risk of long COVID diagnosis among ethnic minorities was more pronounced between January 2020 and June 2021. Furthermore, the odds of reporting cardiopulmonary symptoms (including dyspnoea, cough, and chest pain) and any long COVID symptoms were higher among people of North African, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Asian origins than among native Danes in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Despite including the nationwide sample of individuals diagnosed with COVID-19, the precision of our estimates on long COVID was limited to the sample of patients with symptoms who had contacted the hospital. CONCLUSIONS Belonging to an ethnic minority group was significantly associated with an increased risk of long COVID, indicating the need to better understand long COVID drivers and address care and treatment strategies in these populations.

Abstract
The strategic location of North Africa has made the region the core of a wide range of human demographic events, including migrations, bottlenecks, and admixture processes. This has led to a complex and heterogeneous genetic and cultural landscape, which remains poorly studied compared to other world regions. Whole-exome sequencing is particularly relevant to determine the effects of these demographic events on current-day North Africans' genomes, since it allows to focus on those parts of the genome that are more likely to have direct biomedical consequences. Whole-exome sequencing can also be used to assess the effect of recent demography in functional genetic variation and the efficacy of natural selection, a long-lasting debate. In the present work, we use newly generated whole-exome sequencing and genome-wide array genotypes to investigate the effect of demography in functional variation in 7 North African populations, considering both cultural and demographic differences and with a special focus on Amazigh (plur. Imazighen) groups. We detect genetic differences among populations related to their degree of isolation and the presence of bottlenecks in their recent history. We find differences in the functional part of the genome that suggest a relaxation of purifying selection in the more isolated groups, allowing for an increase of putatively damaging variation. Our results also show a shift in mutational load coinciding with major demographic events in the region and reveal differences within and between cultural and geographic groups.

Abstract
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonotic disease with a widespread occurrence, particularly in developing countries. Known as a neglected disease, it is highly prevalent in Algeria with a significant public health concern and substantial financial losses. The objectives of this study was to explore knowledge and awareness and practice of the Algerian population regarding this disease. A cross-sectional online-based survey was conducted between July 15 and September 25, 2022 using a self-administered questionnaire targeting all Algerian people of more than 18 years of age. Out of the total respondents, 87.7% have ever heard of CE with livestock rearing connection (OR:2.550, CI 95% OR: 1.108-5.870) and educational level (OR:3.826, CI 95% OR: 1.599-9.156) as the main factors associated with the level of awareness. Regarding their knowledge, results showed dispersing notions about the disease. The majority (84.8%) were aware of the zonnotic nature of the disease while only 49.6% knew that CE is caused by parasitic disease. Also, 83.3% were knowledgeable of the role of contaminated offal in the contamination of dogs which are considered as the main source of contamination of humans (65.19%). Regarding their practices, even home slaughtering was common (92.96%), some positive attitudes were prevalent where most of the participants declared washing vegetable before consumption (97.41%) and washing their hands after touching a dog (91.11%). Also, 68.29% among the dog owners declared that deworming their pets. This study has revealed that despite the high level of awareness and some positive attitudes, the level of knowledge about CE among the Algerian public has shown some gaps related to the epidemiology of the disease. These results could be helpful for the awareness campaigns programmers in their missions through focusing their efforts on raising the level of knowledge for the items that have shown a lack of understand which will be of great importance in the strategy of CE elimination.

Abstract
Selenium is efficient in reducing the progression of active Graves' orbitopathy and improving life quality. The impact of mending relative deficiency of selenium on improving Graves' orbitopathy is not known, due to the lack of previous measurement of baseline levels of selenium. The study object was to determine whether serum selenium levels are lower in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) disease in comparison with those without ophthalmopathy. This prospective case control study was conducted between 2019 and 2021 at the endocrine and ophthalmology clinics, Ain Shams University, Cairo. The study included a total of 75 subjects, 50 patients with Graves' disease (GD) and 25 subjects as a control group. Of the GD patients, 25 had Graves' orbitopathy. Serum selenium concentrations were measured in each group. The mean level of serum selenium was significantly lower in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (16.6 ± 7.5 ng/ml) than in patients with Graves' disease (42.9 ± 8.2 ng/ml) (p < 0.001). Mean selenium levels were reduced with increasing severity of GO, as selenium level was 30-55 ng/ml in GD, 21-28 ng/ml in mild GO, 18-22 ng/ml in moderate GO and 5-16 ng/ml in severe GO (p < 0.001). In conclusion, serum selenium levels were lower in GO patients compared with GD patients in an Egyptian population. Low selenium levels may be a risk factor for ophthalmopathy in Graves' disease patients.

Abstract
Genetically determined variation of killer cell immunoglobulin like receptors (KIR) and their HLA class I ligands affects multiple aspects of human health. Their extreme diversity is generated through complex interplay of natural selection for pathogen resistance and reproductive health, combined with demographic structure and dispersal. Despite significant importance to multiple health conditions of differential effect across populations, the nature and extent of immunogenetic diversity is under-studied for many geographic regions. Here, we describe the first high-resolution analysis of KIR and HLA class I combinatorial diversity in Northern Africa. Analysis of 125 healthy unrelated individuals from Cairo in Egypt yielded 186 KIR alleles arranged in 146 distinct centromeric and 79 distinct telomeric haplotypes. The most frequent haplotypes observed were KIR-A, encoding two inhibitory receptors specific for HLA-C, two that are specific for HLA-A and -B, and no activating receptors. Together with 141 alleles of HLA class I, 75 of which encode a KIR ligand, we identified a mean of six distinct interacting pairs of inhibitory KIR and HLA allotypes per individual. We additionally characterize 16 KIR alleles newly identified in the study population. Our findings place Egyptians as one of the most highly diverse populations worldwide, with important implications for transplant matching and studies of immune-mediated diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The rapidly emerging Coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread around the world yielding in significant changes in almost every aspect of daily life. While primary research of the epidemic COVID-19 has focused on the psychological impact on the general population and health professionals, no survey of the pandemic-resulting containment on parents and their children has been yet addressed in the Tunisian-North African population. This study aimed to assess the psychological profile of parents and youth in Tunisia during a period of COVID 19 lockdown, and to identify associated factors to parental anxiety symptoms. METHODS This is an analytical cross-sectional study composed of a total of 538 adults including 464 mothers and 74 fathers. Parents of children aged less than 18 years completed an online survey (Google Forms) on the Psychological Impact of Confinement which includes the Generalized Anxiety Scale (GAD-7), the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA), and the infantile trait-anxiety scale. The survey was initiated in May 2020 on a population of the Tunisian-North African citizens and lasted for more than 6 weeks. RESULTS The median GAD-7 score was 11 corresponding to a moderate anxiety with 27.8% reporting severe anxiety. The median PBA score was 31 corresponding to a moderate risk of burnout, with 19.5% being affected. The children's anxiety scores were associated with their parents' anxiety ratings with 24% of the children reported signs of moderate anxiety. CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 pandemic affected parental and their children' psychological behavior due to a direct social isolation and distancing. Pediatricians need to be alerted on this issue and future measures are essential to avoid parental emotional burnout and anxiety disorder in similar situations.

Abstract
Despite the growing cultural diversity worldwide, there is scarce research on how socialization processes prepare youth to respond to increasing multicultural demands and the degree to which these socialization opportunities inform youth academic functioning. This study used a person-centered approach to identify profiles or niches based on the degree and consistency of multicultural socialization experiences across school, peer, and family settings and to examine the associations between identified niches and markers of academic functioning (i.e., emotional and behavioral academic engagement, academic aspirations and expectations) in a sample of adolescents (N = 717; Mage = 13.73 years). Participants (49.9% girls) were from the U.S. Southwest and represented multiple ethno-racial backgrounds (31.8% Hispanic/Latinx, 31.5% Multiethnic, 25.7% White, 7.3% Black or African American, 1.4% Asian American or Pacific Islander, 1.4% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 1% Arab, Middle Eastern, or North African). Six distinct multicultural socialization niches were identified. Three niches had similar patterns across school-peer-family but ranged in the degree of socialization. The cross-setting similar higher socialization niche (Niche 6) demonstrated greater socialization than the cross-setting similar moderate (Niche 5) and lower socialization (Niche 4) niches, which had moderate and lower socialization, respectively. Three niches demonstrated cross-setting dissimilarity which ranged in the type of cross-setting contrast and the degree of socialization. The cross-setting dissimilar school contrast socialization niche (Niche 3) had greater dissimilarities between socialization opportunities in the school setting compared to the peer and family settings and demonstrated the lowest levels of socialization of all niches. The other two niches, the cross-setting dissimilar peer contrast (Niche 1) and greater peer contrast socialization (Niche 2) niches had larger dissimilarities between socialization opportunities in the peer setting than the school and family settings. In the former, however, the contrast was lower, and socialization ranged between very low to low. In the latter, the contrast was higher and socialization ranged from very low to moderate. Most adolescents were in the cross-setting similar lower socialization niche or in the cross-setting dissimilar niches. Adolescents in the cross-setting similar higher multicultural socialization demonstrated greater emotional and behavioral academic engagement than adolescents in most of the other niches. Adolescents in the cross-setting dissimilar school contrast niches demonstrated lower emotional and behavioral academic engagement and lower academic expectations than adolescents in some of the other niches. The results emphasize the collective role of school, peer, and family multicultural socialization on emotional and behavioral academic engagement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is a lack of guidance on common neuropsychological measures among Arabic speakers and individuals who identify as Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) in the United States. This study evaluated measurement and structural invariance of a neuropsychological battery across race/ethnicity (MENA, Black, White) and language (Arabic, English). METHOD Six hundred six older adults (128 MENA-English, 74 MENA-Arabic, 207 Black, 197 White) from the Detroit Area Wellness Network were assessed via telephone. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses examined four indicators corresponding to distinct cognitive domains: episodic memory (Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease [CERAD] Word List), language (Animal Fluency), attention (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA] forward digit span), and working memory (MoCA backward digit span). RESULTS Measurement invariance analyses revealed full scalar invariance across language groups and partial scalar invariance across racial/ethnic groups suggesting a White testing advantage on Animal Fluency; yet this noninvariance did not meet a priori criteria for salient impact. Accounting for measurement noninvariance, structural invariance analyses revealed that MENA participants tested in English demonstrated lower cognitive health than Whites and Blacks, and MENA participants tested in Arabic demonstrated lower cognitive health than all other groups. CONCLUSIONS Measurement invariance results support the use of a rigorously translated neuropsychological battery to assess global cognitive health across MENA/Black/White and Arabic/English groups. Structural invariance results reveal underrecognized cognitive disparities. Disaggregating MENA older adults from other non-Latinx Whites will advance research on cognitive health equity. Future research should attend to heterogeneity within the MENA population, as the choice to be tested in Arabic versus English may reflect immigrant, educational, and socioeconomic experiences relevant to cognitive aging. Abstract
Studies of Middle Eastern immigrants using national data, with and without African immigrants, have provided important discoveries on the health of this group. However, they do not directly measure health among Arab immigrants. It is yet to be determined whether using a Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) classification can represent the health needs of Arab immigrants. The objective of this study was to assess if MENA immigrant health reflects the same patterns found in previous research focusing on Arab immigrant health. We used multiple years of data from the National Health Interview Survey in alignment with each former study methodology to compare our findings with four previous research studies. The independent variable was region of birth among non-Hispanic Whites. The dependent variables were chronic diseases, women's preventive health behaviors, men's preventive health behaviors, and cigarette smoking. Logistic regression was conducted to determine the odds of each outcome for MENA immigrants compared to US-born Whites. Then, adjusted 95% confidence intervals representing the more inclusive MENA immigrant categorization were compared to previous studies among Arab immigrants. Chronic conditions, women's and men's preventive health behaviors and cigarette smoking did not differ whether the MENA or Arab definition was used. However, statistically significant differences were observed between MENA and Arab immigrants regarding bachelor's degree or higher, not employed and years in the US. The MENA category reflects the Arab immigrant experience, even though it includes a wider set of origins, some of which are not Arab. Including a MENA identifier on future data collections will both represent Arab Americans, as well as identify this population as distinct from Whites to better represent and track health disparities.

Abstract
Aim The study explores the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic fatigue among well-educated Egyptians measured in terms of their level of adherence toward COVID-19 protective measures along 20 months since the beginning of the pandemic. Setting and Design A cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2021, using an online questionnaire for well-educated Egyptians in different governorates. Results A total of 888 participants completed the questionnaire, their mean age was 39 ± 7.2 years and 60% of them were females. There was a strong association between the presence of either behavioral risk factors or chronic conditions and % of infection. The main sources of COVID-19 information were social media, followed by the Egyptian Ministry of health and population and WHO websites. A pandemic fatigue was observed after nearly 7 to 10 months from the pandemic emergence. The participant's age, previous COVID-19 infection, and occupation status were significant predictors for adherence to COVID-19 protective measures. The participants claimed that difficulty in remaining at home, feeling uncomfortable with face masks, the high cost of protective supplies, absence of governmental enforcement, and forgetfulness are the most perceptive barriers hindering their adherence to COVID-19 protective measures. They suggested some strategies for better adherence and reduced pandemic fatigue that includes: the implementation of governmental enforcement measures, including penalties for nonwearing masks, educational health programs, and availability of free protective supplies at the workplace. Conclusions Pandemic fatigue was observed after 7 to 10 months from the pandemic emergence even though the high education level of the participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The limited studies that focused on suicidality in individuals at Ultra-High Risk (UHR) of psychosis were predominantly cross-sectional, emerging from Western countries. We aimed to examine suicide risk among Tunisian UHR and First Episode Psychosis (FEP) patients at baseline, and to evaluate the evolution and correlates of suicidal ideation over a 12-month period in the UHR group exclusively. METHODS 35 UHR (aged 22.8 ± 4.0 years, 45.7% male) and 33 FEP (aged 27.3 ± 4.8 years, 63.6% male) participants were included. The Comprehensive Assessment of at Risk Mental States, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used. RESULTS No significant differences were found between the UHR and the FEP groups with regard to levels of suicidal ideation at baseline. Suicidal ideation scores showed a significant decrease over time in UHR participants (p=.014; η2=0.242). An increase in total PANSS scores at 1 year (Beta=0.03; p=.048; 95%CI 0.001, 0.060; η2=0.182) significantly increased suicidal ideation scores at 1 year in the UHR group. CONCLUSION Our findings contribute to the limited body of evidence on this topic by providing new prospective data from a population, country and region that has never been researched previously.

Abstract
The need for diverse representation in clinical trials has recently been reinforced by the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) guidance for industry entitled, "Diversity Plans to Improve Enrollment of Participants from Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Populations in Clinical Trials." By ensuring inclusion of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority populations in clinical trials, results can be more generalizable and the safety and efficacy can be accurately assessed within the diverse U.S. population. Limitations exist in the interpretation and implementation of clinical trial results reported using the current racial and ethnic categories, as these standards do not reflect the true diversity of the U.S. population. This is particularly true for the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) population, which is usually overlooked given the lack of an established category. Although the international MENA region demonstrates the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world at 12.2%, the actual prevalence among MENA individuals living in the U.S. may be "hidden" within the White category. Therefore, data on the MENA population should be disaggregated from data within the White category to not only unmask health disparities, but also to ensure adequate representation in clinical trials. This paper discusses the importance of appropriate representation and inclusion of the MENA population in diabetes clinical trials, which is a critical public health issue domestically and globally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Literature on colorectal cancer outcomes in individuals of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent is limited. To address this gap, we estimated five-year colorectal cancer-specific survival by race and ethnicity, including MENA individuals, in a diverse, population-based sample in California. METHODS We identified adults (ages 18-79 years) diagnosed with a first or only colorectal cancer in 2004 to 2017 using the California Cancer Registry (CCR), including non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian, Hispanic, and MENA individuals. For each racial/ethnic group, we calculated five-year colorectal cancer-specific survival and used Cox proportional hazards regression models to examine the association of race/ethnicity and survival, adjusting for clinical and socio demographic factors. RESULTS Of 110,192 persons diagnosed with colorectal cancer, five-year colorectal cancer-specific survival was lowest in Black (61.0%) and highest in MENA (73.2%) individuals. Asian (72.2%) individuals had higher survival than White (70.0%) and Hispanic (68.2%) individuals. In adjusted analysis, MENA [adjusted HR (aHR), 0.82; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.76-0.89], Asian (aHR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.83-0.90), and Hispanic (aHR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.91-0.97) race/ethnicity were associated with higher, and Black (aHR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.09-1.18) race/ethnicity was associated with lower survival compared with non-Hispanic White race/ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study to report colorectal cancer survival in MENA individuals in the United States. We observed higher survival of MENA individuals compared with other racial/ethnic groups, adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical factors. IMPACT Future studies are needed to identify factors contributing to cancer outcomes in this unique population.

Abstract
This scoping review aimed to identify the scope of the current literature on the prevalence, consequences, and risk factors of domestic violence (DV) against women by their husbands or male partners in North African and Middle Eastern countries. The methodology for this scoping review was based on the framework outlined by Arksey and O'Malley. Studies published on DV against women over the age of 15 by partner or husband and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals between January 1970 and April 2018 were included in the review. The databases MEDLINE, PsychINFO, CINAHL, HealthSTAR, EMBASE, Scopus, African Journals Online, Turkish Journal Database, and gray literature sources were searched. On completion of the review process, 151 full-text articles were identified for charting. This review demonstrated that women's age, women's education level, duration of marriage, history of childhood abuse/witnessing family violence, living in the rural region, and family income level were negatively associated with DV, indicating that younger women, women with lower education, a longer marriage duration, and a lower income level had a higher risk of exposure to DV in this region. Anxiety, depression/insomnia, and physical injury were the most common health problems reported by victims in the region. The highest proportion of women with no response to violence was reported in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. The findings of this scoping review represent the first attempt to summarize the literature from North African and Middle Eastern countries and demonstrate the similarity in DV-related behaviors among women despite the cultural and regional diversity of the studies.

Abstract
AIM We aim to evaluate weight status in mother-child household pairs and patterns specific to over-nutrition households and double burden households. METHODS We used nationally representative data from the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (2001-2014) in the Middle East & North African (MENA) Region (n = 45,104) to examine weight status of mother-child dyads. Under-nutrition households were defined as mothers with underweight and children with wasting; over-nutrition households as mothers with overweight/obesity and children with overweight; and double burden households as mothers with underweight and children with overweight or mothers with overweight/obesity mother and children with wasting. Survey-adjusted multinomial logistic regression were used to quantify predictors of weight patterns. RESULTS Across the MENA region, 8.6% of households were experiencing double burden malnutrition, 11% were experiencing over-nutrition and 0.2% were experiencing under-nutrition. Wealthier households with older mothers, higher birth-order children, more educated parents and private water access were more likely to be over-nutrition or double burden households. Compared to over-nutrition households, double burden households were poorer and more likely to have a child with low birthweight. CONCLUSIONS Over-nutrition is the most common unhealthy weight pattern, followed by double-burden; socioeconomic status and birth weight are consistent predictors of unhealthy mother-child pairs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study sought to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep health among Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) populations, understudied geographic regions including with regards to sleep health. SETTING A systematic literature search of studies published from inception to 27 March 2022 was conducted on multiple databases using developed keywords. PARTICIPANTS Studies were included if they (1) investigated one or more aspects/dimensions of sleep health as an outcome (eg, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep problems); (2) measured the impact of a COVID-19 pandemic-related domain (eg, impact of quarantine, work from home, lifestyle changes); (3) focused on at least one MENA region population; (4) were peer-reviewed; (5) included ≥100 participants; (6) were written in English and (7) had full-text article publicly available. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES MEASURED Primary outcomes were sleep duration, sleep quality and sleep problems. RESULTS In line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 164 studies were included for data extraction. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale for cross-sectional studies was used to assess the quality of the studies. Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted sleep duration, sleep quality and presence and severity of sleep disorders in MENA populations, including adults, children, students, healthcare workers and people with chronic illnesses. The directionality and strength of associations, as well as the determinants of sleep health, varied by subpopulations. CONCLUSIONS Longitudinal studies are needed to understand the longer-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sleep health of MENA populations. Sleep health interventions and policy measures should be tailored to the need of each subpopulation. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022321128.
