Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Tripterygium hypoglaucum (Kunmingshanhaitang in Chinese) is a plant of the genus Tripterygium which have been used as anti-tumor folk medicines in Yi and Bai ethnic groups in Yunnan province, China for hundreds of years. Terpenoids from T. hypoglaucum presented therapeutic effects on multiple tumors. But there were few studies about pancreatic cancer treatment of these terpenoids. Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignancy and lacked of specific drugs. Currently, anti-tumor drugs have poor therapeutic effect and prognosis for pancreatic cancer. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to elucidate the terpenoids from T. hypoglaucum and illuminate their anti-pancreatic cancer bioactivities. MATERIAL AND METHODS Terpenoids were obtained through sequential chromatographic methods including silica gel, MCI gel, Sephadex LH-20, and preparative HPLC. Their structures were determined by HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of some new diterpenoids were assigned through comparison of experimental and calculated circular dichroism spectra. The cytotoxicity of isolates was measured using the MTT method on human pancreatic cancer cells SW1990. The effects on expressions of AKT, Erk1/2, p-AKT, p-Erk1/2, and Bax proteins in human pancreatic cancer cells SW1990 of these compounds were determined by western blotting assays. RESULTS Eleven new (compounds 1∼11) and fourteen known terpenoids (compounds 12∼25) were isolated from the underground parts of T. hypoglaucum. These compounds were belonged to abietane diterpenoids, isoprimara diterpenoids, ent-kaurane diterpenoids, oleanane triterpenoids, and friedelane triterpenoids. Compounds 5, 7, 8, 9, 16, 18, 22, 24, and 25 possessed significant cytotoxicity against SW1990 cells with IC50 values of 19.28 ± 4.39, 9.91 ± 2.23, 27.32 ± 5.89, 56.43 ± 6.92, 0.16 ± 0.05, 0.58 ± 0.15, 0.81 ± 0.04, 0.48 ± 0.11, and 10.01 ± 1.39 μM respectively. After compounds 16, 22, and 24 been treated with the pancreatic cancer cells in medium and high doses, the protein expressions of AKT, p-AKT, Erk, and p-Erk were not remarkably reduced and the expressions of Bax protein were significantly increased. CONCLUSION This study indicated that terpenoids from T. hypoglaucum could inhibit human pancreatic cancer cells SW1990. Especially, compounds 16, 22, and 24 possessed significant cytotoxicity against SW1990 cells with low IC50 values and could increase the expressions of Bax protein. These compounds shared a wide variety of structural characteristics which provided us more candidate molecules for the development of anti-pancreatic cancer drugs and further prompted us to investigate their anti-pancreatic mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infections in neonates with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) following circumcision due to Metzitzah Be'Peh (MBP) performed by a Mohel occur each year in small numbers. One solution to this problem is the use of a mucus extractor device instead of MBP, which has been authorized by some rabbis. Yet, using a mucus extractor remains controversial among ultra-Orthodox Jews; thus, creating a need for additional solutions. OBJECTIVES To seek to reduce HSV-1 infection of neonates due to MBP. METHODS We tested several oral rinse solutions for their ability to destroy virus infectivity following incubation for 30 seconds and using plaque reduction assays. RESULTS Corsodyl, Decapinol, and Listerine® all destroyed plaques formation of spiked virus, while Gengigel and Tantum Verde were found to be less effective. We focused specifically on Listerine® due to its efficacy in eliminating contagious HSV-1 from saliva after a 30-second oral rinse. Five different products of Listerine® reduced the infectivity of a spiked virus by more than 4 orders of magnitude in 30 seconds. We also showed that Listerine (up to 7% v/v) can stay in the mouth but did not harm living cells and therefore will not cause any damage to the injured tissue. CONCLUSIONS Significant reduction in cases of infection with HSV-1 due to MBP can be achieved if Mohalim consistently adopt the practice of careful mouth washing with Listerine® just before performing MBP.

Abstract
The current research aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of wood vinegar on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and meat quality of grower-finisher pigs. In total, 132 crossbred ({Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc}) grower-finisher pigs with an initial average body weight 30.48±4.23 kg (11 replications/treatment; 4 pigs/pen) were used in a 16-week trial. Based on the body weight and sex the pigs were randomly assigned to three treatments. Dietary treatments consisted of the basal diet (CON) or the basal diet supplemented with 0.05% and 0.1% wood vinegar. The inclusion of dietary wood vinegar supplementation significantly improved the body weight gain (BWG) and average daily gain (ADG) (P=0.0521; 0.043) of pigs at week 16. The total track nutrient digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen was linearly increased in pigs fed with an increased amount of wood vinegar. In addition, dietary supplementation of wood vinegar linearly improved longissimus muscle area, yellowness (b*) of the meat color, and carcass weight (P<0.05) and a tendency in linear reduction was observed for water holding capacity (P=0.068), and drip loss at d5 and d7 (P=0.091, 0.069). However, there was no significant difference found for lean meat percentage and backfat thickness in this experiment. In summary, dietary inclusion of wood vinegar supplementation enhanced growth performance and total track digestibility of nutrients and had no effects on lean meat percentage and backfat thickness of grower-finisher pigs.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial and heterogeneous autoimmune disease involving multiple organ systems and tissues. Lupus nephritis occurs in approximately 60% of patients with SLE and is the leading cause of morbidity. Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare but very serious complication of SLE with a greater than 50% associated mortality. The etiology of SLE is unclear but has proposed genetic, hormonal, and environmental aspects. Pristane is a saturated terpenoid alkane and has become the most popular laboratory model for inducing lupus in mice. The pristane model of SLE has the capacity to reproduce many components of the human presentation of the disease. Previous studies have demonstrated that virus-derived immune-modulating proteins have the potential to control inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Serp-1, a 55 kDa secreted and highly glycosylated immune modulator derived from myxoma virus (MYXV), has potent immunomodulatory activity in models of vasculitis, viral sepsis, collagen-induced arthritis, and transplant rejection. This chapter describes the mouse preclinical pristane lupus model as a method to examine virus-derived protein efficacy for treating autoimmune diseases and specifically lupus nephritis and DAH.

Abstract
Terpenes are a group of phytocompounds that have been used in medicine for decades owing to their significant role in human health. So far, they have been examined for therapeutic purposes as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral agents, and the clinical potential of this class of compounds has been increasing continuously as a source of pharmacologically interesting agents also in relation to topical administration. Major difficulties in achieving sustained delivery of terpenes to the skin are connected with their low solubility and stability, as well as poor cell penetration. In order to overcome these disadvantages, new delivery technologies based on nanostructures are proposed to improve bioavailability and allow controlled release. This review highlights the potential properties of terpenes loaded in several types of lipid-based nanocarriers (liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers) used to overcome free terpenes' form limitations and potentiate their therapeutic properties for topical administration.

Abstract
E proteins, a subset of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins, are transcription activators and their functions are inhibited by DNA-binding inhibitor (Id) 1-4. Studies have shown that Treg levels are decreased in Id3 knockout mice. Mice over-expressing Id1 in CD4 T cells possessed a greater number of regulatory T cells (Treg) and exhibited attenuated experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). The significance of Id proteins in human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remains unclear. In this study, we systematically analyzed Id transcription in naïve, memory CD4 cells and regulatory T cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in patients with active or inactive SLE. In parallel, Treg subsets in PBMCs were analyzed using different strategies. Id expression levels were correlated with Treg numbers as well as clinical indicators. We found that Id genes expressed in human peripheral CD4 cells were mainly Id2 and Id3. Id3 levels were significantly elevated in CD4+CD25hi T cells of patients with active SLE. Likewise, Id3 levels were positively correlated with increased CD4+FoxP3+ and CD4+Helios+FoxP3+ Treg cells in these patients. Id3 levels were found to be positively correlated with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), lupus anticoagulant (LAC), ribosomal antibody and SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) in patients with active SLE. Mice overexpressing Id1 in CD4+ T cells possessed significantly higher Treg levels in spleen and lower autoantibody concentrations in serum. Our results suggest that during the pathogenesis of SLE, up-regulation of Id3 can promote Treg differentiation to play an inhibitory effect on autoimmune responses.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the penetration activity of O-acylterpineol derivatives both in vitro and in vivo, and to investigate the enhancing mechanism of O-acylterpineol derivatives which were synthesized by α-terpineol and fatty acid. The promoting activities on the isosorbide dinitrate patch were tested across full thickness rabbit skin both in vitro and in vivo. In order to elucidate the permeation mechanism, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, molecular modeling, and confocal laser scanning microscopy were introduced to investigate the regulation of enhancers in the skin permeability and biophysical properties. With in vitro cytotoxicity test and in vivo erythema model, the skin irritation of enhancers was also evaluated. Permeation studies showed 2-(4-methylcyclohex-3-en-l-yl) propan-2-yl tetradecanoate produced the obvious enhancement activity for ISDN both in vitro and in vivo from patches. These results were supported by ATR-FTIR, molecular modeling, and CLSM studies which revealed that O-acylterpineol could decrease the order of the alkyl chains in the skin lipids. Additionally, it was found that TER-C14 produced a relatively low skin irritation, compared with the TER which was assumed to be a safe compound. The present research suggested that some newly designed acylterpineol derivatives are shown to be suitable permeation enhancers for transdermal drug delivery, and the chain length of C14 seem to be safe and more favorable for the penetration of ISDN from DIA patches.

Abstract
Background Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the female sand flea (Tunga penetrans), which burrows into the skin causing intense pain, itching and debilitation. People in endemic countries do not have access to an effective and safe home treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of a traditionally used and readily available mixture of neem and coconut oil for treatment of tungiasis in coastal Kenya. Methodology Ninety-six children aged 6–14 years with at least one embedded viable flea were randomized to be treated with either a mixture of 20% neem (Azadirachta indica) seed oil in coconut oil (NC), or with a 0.05% potassium permanganate (KMnO4) foot bath. Up to two viable fleas were selected for each participant and monitored for 6 days after first treatment using a digital microscope for signs of viability and abnormal development. Acute pathology was assessed on all areas of the feet using a previously established score. Children reported pain levels and itching on a visual scale. Results The NC was not more effective in killing embedded sand fleas within 7 days than the current standard with KMnO4, killing on average 40% of the embedded sand fleas six days after the initial treatment. However, the NC was superior with respect to the secondary outcomes of abnormal development and reduced pathology. There was a higher odds that fleas rapidly aged in response to NC compared to KMnO4 (OR 3.4, 95% CI: 1.22–9.49, p = 0.019). NC also reduced acute pathology (p<0.005), and there was a higher odds of children being pain free (OR 3.5, p = 0.001) when treated with NC. Conclusions Whilst NC did not kill more fleas than KMnO4 within 7 days, secondary outcomes were better and suggest that a higher impact might have been observed at a longer observation period. Further trials are warranted to assess optimal mixtures and dosages. Trial registration The study was approved by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Scientific and Ethical Review Unit (SERU), Nairobi (Non-SSC Protocol No. 514, 1st April 2016) and approved by and registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board’s Expert Committee on Clinical Trials PPB/ECCT/16/05/03/2016(94), the authority mandated, by Cap 244 Laws of Kenya, to regulate clinical trials in the country. The trial was also registered with the Pan African Clinical Trial Registry (PACTR201901905832601). Tungiasis is a disease caused by the female sand flea which burrows into the skin of the feet and causes intense pain and itching. People in endemic tropical areas do not have access to a simple, effective and safe method for treatment at home. The most common treatment used during clinical outreach activities is a foot bath in a disinfectant. Here we report on a clinical trial testing the effectiveness of a mixture of neem and coconut oils to kill the embedded fleas and reduce inflammation, pain and itching. We found the oil mixture reduced the proportion of fleas alive in the foot after 6 days in a similar way as the footbath in disinfectant, which is unavailable to households. However, unlike the footbath, the neem oil treatment caused most of the fleas to rapidly age in the foot and decreased the inflammation, leaving more children pain-free after one week. We conclude the neem and coconut oil mixture could be a promising approach for the treatment of tungiasis but its activity on the fleas might be slower. We need to follow up with longer observation time and test different dosages and application times.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is associated with learning and memory deficit. Murine model of lupus induced by pristane in BALB/c mice is an experimental model that resembles some clinical and immunological SLE pathogenesis. Nevertheless, there is no experimental evidence that relates this model to cognitive dysfunction associated with NR2A/2B relative expression. To evaluate cognitive impairment related to memory deficits in a murine model of lupus induced by pristane in BALB/c mice related to mRNA relative expression levels of NR2A/2B hippocampal subunits in short and long-term memory task at 7 and 12 weeks after LPS exposition in a behavioral test with the use of Barnes maze. A total of 54 female BALB/c mice 8–12 weeks old were included into 3 groups: 7 and 12 weeks using pristane alone (0.5 mL of pristane) by a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection. A control group (single i.p. injection of 0.5 mL NaCl 0.9%) and pristane plus LPS exposure using single i.p. pristane injection and LPS of E. coli O55:B5, in a dose of 3mg/kg diluted in NaCl 0.9% 16 weeks post-pristane administration. To determine cognitive dysfunction, mice were tested in a Barnes maze. Serum anti-Sm antibodies and relative expression of hippocampal NR2A/2B subunits (GAPDH as housekeeping gene) with SYBR green quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and 2-ΔΔCT method were determined in the groups. Downregulation of hippocampal NR2A subunit was more evident than NR2B in pristane and pristane+LPS at 7 and 12 weeks of treatment and it is related to learning and memory disturbance assayed by Barnes maze. This is the first report using the murine model of lupus induced by pristane that analyzes the NMDA subunit receptors, finding a downregulation of NR2A subunit related to learning and memory disturbance being more evident when they were exposed to LPS.

Abstract
Essential oils are natural products with a complex composition. Terpenes are the most common class of chemical compounds present in essential oils. Terpenes and the essential oils containing them are widely used and investigated by their pharmacological properties and permeation-enhancing ability. However, many terpenes and essential oils are sensitive to environmental conditions, undergoing volatilization and chemical degradation. In order to overcome the chemical instability of some isolated terpenes and essential oils, the encapsulation of these compounds in nanostructured systems (polymeric, lipidic, or molecular complexes) has been employed. In addition, nanoencapsulation can be of interest for pharmaceutical applications due to its capacity to improve the bioavailability and allow the controlled release of drugs. Topical drug administration is a convenient and non-invasive administration route for both local and systemic drug delivery. The present review focuses on describing the current status of research concerning nanostructured delivery systems containing isolated terpenes and/or essential oils designed for topical administration and on discussing the use of terpenes and essential oils either for their biological activities or as permeation enhancers in pharmaceutic formulations.

Abstract
Endogenous nucleic acids and their receptors may be involved in the initiation of systemic autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). As the role of the DNA sensing Toll-like receptor (TLR) 9 in RA is unclear, we aimed to investigate its involvement in the pathogenesis of autoimmune arthritis using three different experimental models of RA. The data obtained revealed involvement of TLR9 in the T cell-dependent phase of inflammatory arthritis. In rats with pristane-induced arthritis (PIA), TLR9 inhibition before disease onset reduced arthritis significantly and almost completely abolished bone erosion. Accordingly, serum levels of IL-6, α-1-acid-glycoprotein and rheumatoid factor were reduced. Moreover, in TLR9-/- mice, streptococcal cell wall (SCW)-induced arthritis was reduced in the T cell-dependent phase, whereas T cell-independent serum-transfer arthritis was not affected. Remarkably, while TLR7 expression did not change during in vitro osteoclastogenesis, TLR9 expression was higher in precursor cells than in mature osteoclasts and partial inhibition of osteoclastogenesis was achieved only by the TLR9 antagonist. These results demonstrate a pivotal role for TLR9 in the T cell-dependent phases of inflammatory arthritis and additionally suggest some role during osteoclastogenesis. Hence, endogenous DNA seems to be crucially involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory autoimmune arthritis.

Abstract
Exposure to various types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun has been linked to skin cancer. Use of sunscreen can reduce the damaging and carcinogenic effects of UV radiation. However, multiple chemicals in sunscreen can trigger allergic responses, making people less inclined to use sunscreen. Thus, finding natural, plant-based alternatives to sunscreen with similar efficacy has become an important area of research. Myrrh oil, extracted from the shrub Commiphora myrrha, has been used in the treatment of topical wounds and studies have shown that it may provide protection against solar radiation. This study sought to further investigate if C. myrrha oil can confer protection against UV radiation. A UV-sensitive strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was grown in petri dishes with one half covered by aluminum foil and the other half covered by clear polyethylene food wrap. The polyethylene half was treated with either SPF 15 or SPF 30 sunscreen, C. myrrha oil or a combination of C. myrrha oil and either sunscreen. The plates were exposed to sunlight. Colony death was quantified using visual estimation. While UV blocking by C. myrrha oil alone was not as effective as that by the synthetic sunscreen, the 1:1 combination of C. myrrha oil and SPF 15 sunblock was significantly more effective than SPF 15 sunblock alone to prevent S. cerevisiae death. These data suggest that naturally-based sunscreens supplemented with synthetic UV deterrents may provide a more holistic approach to prevent UV-induced skin damage. Abstract
The nanoencapsulation of botanical compounds (such as geraniol) is an important strategy that can be used to increase the stability and efficiency of these substances in integrated pest management. In this study, chitosan/gum arabic nanoparticles containing geraniol were prepared and characterized. In addition, evaluation was made of the biological activity of geraniol encapsulated in chitosan/gum arabic nanoparticles toward whitefly ( Bemisia tabaci). The optimized formulation showed a high encapsulation efficiency (>90%) and remained stable for about 120 days. The formulation protected the geraniol against degradation by UV radiation, and the in vitro release was according to a diffusion mechanism that was influenced by temperature. An attraction effect was observed for Bemisia tabaci, indicating the potential of this type of system for use in pest management, especially in trap devices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal disease is associated with cardiovascular diseases because of its role in host immune-inflammatory response. Serum lipids are the commonest risk factors between periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases. MATERIALS AND METHOD A double blinded randomised clinical trial was carried out among 45 subjects with generalised severe periodontitis. They were divided into 3-groups of 15 subjects each. Group A: 0.25% lemongrass oil mouthwash, Group B: 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash and Group C: Oral prophylaxis only Group. Oral examinations like assessment of Probing Pocket Depth and Clinical Attachment Loss and Bio-chemical tests like assessment of C-Reactive Protein, Total Cholesterol, High Density Lipid, Low Density Lipid and triglycerides were conducted at baseline followed by oral prophylaxis at the same visit. Reassessment of the above mentioned parameters were done after 3 months of intervention. Data so collected were subjected for statistical analysis using SPSS ver. 20.0. RESULTS A statistically significant reduction in C-Reactive Protein, Probing Pocket Depth, Clinical Attachment Loss, Total Cholesterol and Low Density Lipid level in 0.25% lemongrass oil mouthwash group was found. On comparing a statistically significant difference was observed for the post intervention scores of Probing Pocket Depth and Clinical Attachment Loss only; for Group A v/s C and Group B v/s C. CONCLUSION 0.25% Lemongrass oil mouthwash was found to be a good herbal alternative; both in the treatment of chronic periodontitis and reduction in the level of serum markers of Cardio Vascular Diseasess.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type I hypersensitivity is an allergic reaction characterized by the overactivity of the immune system provoked by normally harmless substances. Glucocorticoids, anti-histamines, or mast cell stabilizers are the choices of treatment for type I hypersensitivity. Even though these drugs have the anti-allergic effect, they can have several side effects in prolong use. Cedrol is the main bioactive compound of Cedrus atlantica with anti-tumor, anti-oxidative, and platelet-activating factor inhibiting properties. METHODS In this study, the preparation and anti-anaphylactic effect of cedrol-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were evaluated. NLCs were prepared using Compritol® 888 ATO and triolein as lipid phase and vitamin E d-α-tocopherylpolyethyleneglycol 1000 succinate, soya lecithin, and sodium deoxycholate as nanoparticle stabilizers. RESULTS The average diameter of cedrol-NLCs (CR-NLCs) was 71.2 nm (NLC-C1) and 91.93 nm (NLC-C2). The particle had negative zeta potential values of -31.9 mV (NLC-C1) and -44.5 mV (NLC-C2). Type I anaphylactoid reaction in the animal model is significantly reduced by cedrol and cedrol-NLC. This in vivo activity of cedrol resulted that cedrol suppressed compound 48/80-induced peritoneal mast cell degranulation and histamine release from mast cells. Furthermore, compound 48/80-evoked Ca2+ uptake into mast cells was reduced in a dose-dependent manner by cedrol and cedrol-NLC. Studies confirmed that the inhibition of type I anaphylactoid response in vivo in mice and compound 48/80-induced mast cell activation in vitro are greatly enhanced by the loading of cedrol into the NLCs. The safety of cedrol and CR-NLC was evaluated as selectivity index (SI) with prednisolone and cromolyn sodium as positive control. SI of CR-NLC-C2 was found to be 11.5-fold greater than both prednisolone and cromolyn sodium. CONCLUSION Administration of CR-NLC 24 hours before the onset of anaphylaxis can prevent an anaphylactoid reaction. NLCs could be a promising vehicle for the oral delivery of cedrol to protect anaphylactic reactions.

Abstract
Nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the predominant type of lung cancer. Patients with NSCLC show high mortality rates because of failure to clean up cancer stem cells (CSCs). The anticancer activity of phytochemical garcinol has been identified in various cancer cell models. However, the effect of garcinol on NSCLC cell lines is still lacking. Of the NSCLC cell lines we tested, A549 cells were the most sensitive to garcinol. Interestingly, Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 Family Member A1 (ALDH1A1) was preferentially expressed in A549 cells and downregulated by the addition of garcinol. We also found that garcinol enriched DNA damage-inducible transcript 3 (DDIT3) and then altered DDIT3-CCAAT-enhancer-binding proteins beta (C/EBPβ) interaction resulting in a decreased binding of C/EBPβ to the endogenous ALDH1A1 promoter. Furthermore, garcinol's inhibition of ALDH1A1 was identified in a xenograft mice model. Garcinol repressed ALDH1A1 transcription in A549 cells through alterations in the interaction between DDIT3 and C/EBPβ. Garcinol could be a potential dietary phytochemical candidate for NSCLCs patients whose tumors harbored high ALDH1A1 expression.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet has been proven to be highly effective in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer and in decreasing overall mortality. Nowadays, transcriptomics is gaining particular relevance due to the existence of non-coding RNAs capable of regulating many biological processes. The present work describes a systematic review of current evidence supporting the influence of the Mediterranean diet on transcriptomes of different tissues in various experimental models. While information on regulatory RNA is very limited, they seem to contribute to the effect. Special attention has been given to the oily matrix of virgin olive oil. In this regard, monounsaturated fatty acid-rich diets prevented the expression of inflammatory genes in different tissues, an action also observed after the administration of olive oil phenolic compounds. Among these, tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, and secoiridoids have been found to be particularly effective in cell cycle expression. Less explored terpenes, such as oleanolic acid, are important modulators of circadian clock genes. The wide range of studied tissues and organisms indicate that response to these compounds is universal and poses an important level of complexity considering the different genes expressed in each tissue and the number of different tissues in an organism.

Abstract
This study explored the effects of supplemental dietary extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), gallic acid (GA), or lemongrass essential oil (LGEO) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits, lipid peroxidation, hematological, and antioxidative status in growing rabbits under heat stress conditions. A total of 48 male growing New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into four equal groups, which received a basal diet without any supplementation or supplemented with 15 g EVOO, 500 mg GA, or 400 mg LGEO/kg of diet, for eight consecutive weeks. Results revealed that the overall mean of temperature humidity index was 84.67 ± 0.35, reflecting a state of severe heat stress. Moreover, dietary supplementation with EVOO, GA, or LGEO significantly increased live body weight and daily body weight gain but decreased both feed conversion ratio and daily water consumption. Additionally, a significant increase in both organic matter and crude protein digestibility besides a remarkable elevation in the nutritive values of digestible crude protein, total digestible nutrients, and digestible energy, as well as an increase in the numbers of WBCs, lymphocytes, and heterophils was significant in EVOO-supplemented rabbits. Supplementation with EVOO, GA, or LGEO in the heat-stressed growing rabbit's diet enhanced catalase activity and reduced glutathione content, whereas EVOO-treated rabbits had the highest values. Also, malondialdehyde activity was reduced in response to all tested additives. In conclusion, these findings suggested that addition of EVOO, GA, or LGEO in growing rabbit's diet could be used effectively to alleviate negative impacts of heat stress load on performance, nutrient digestibility, oxidative status, and hemato-biochemical features. Furthermore, among these additives, EVOO achieved the best effects.

Abstract
Although numerous hypotheses have been proposed to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA), effective pharmaceuticals have yet to be developed. In our study, the back hairs of C57BL/6 mice were factitiously removed. These mice were then treated with cedrol or minoxidil daily. Mice with early-stage anagen VI hair follicles were treated with cyclophosphamide (CYP, 125mg/kg) to induce alopecia. The CYP-damaged hair follicles were observed and quantified by using a digital photomicrograph. The results demonstrated that the minoxidil-treated mice suffered from complete alopecia similar to the model 6days after CYP administration. Simultaneously, the cedrol-treated (200mg/kg) mice manifested mild alopecia with 40% suppression. Histological observation revealed that anagen hair follicles of the cedrol-pretreated mice (82.5%) likely provided from damage compared with the sparse and dystrophic hair follicles of the model mice (37.0%). Therefore, the use of topical cedrol can prevent hair follicle dystrophy and provide local protection against CIA.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Numerous metabolic abnormalities intrinsic to urolithiasis require drug therapy. At the same time, despite the constant expansion of synthetic drugs, plant-derived medications play a large role in the treatment and prevention of the disease. AIM To evaluate the effect of a plant-derived preparation Rowatinex in patients with urolithiasis after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and analyze the changes in blood and urine parameters in patients receiving the preparation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Depending on the type of post-ESWL treatment, patients were divided into two groups. After ESWL, patients of group A (n=107) and group B (n=50) were administered Rowatinex and antispasmodic drugs, respectively. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Clearance of stone fragments after ESWL within 1-5 days was achieved in 76 (71.1%) patients of group A and in 20 (40.4%) of group B. Analysis of the effect of the therapy on blood count, biochemistry tests and 24h excretion (magnesium, uric acid, calcium, etc.) did not reveal significant differences between group A group B and reference values. Increased diuresis caused by antispasmodic effects of Rowatinex resulted in the complete clearance of stone fragments. Urinalysis in patients of the two groups showed decreased leukocyturia. Furthermore, stabilization of urine pH within the 6.2-6.8 was noted in group A, which is important and necessary in metaphylaxis of recurrent stone formation. CONCLUSIONS Administration of Rowatinex increases the percentage of stone fragment clearance after ESWL and reduces pain intensity. Rowatinex reduces leukocyturia, increases 24h diuresis and stabilizes the pH of urine. Increasing and stabilizing urine pH in patients with calcium oxalate and urate stones reduces the risk of recurrence after ESWL. No complications associated with Rowatinex were reported, allowing long-term administration of the preparation in the complex lithokinetic therapy and for metaphylaxis of recurrent stone formation.

Abstract
Garcinol, which is isolated from fruit rinds of Garcinia indica, is a polyisoprenylated benzophenone. It has been studied for its antitumor activity by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting autophagy in human prostate cancer cells. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increased when garcinol was applied to PC-3 cells indicating a presence of apoptosis. Meanwhile, procaspases-9 and -3 were suppressed with attenuating PARP and DFF-45. Autophagy was inhibited through activating p-mTOR and p-PI3 Kinase/AKT by garcinol, which as a result induced the cells to apoptosis directly. In addition, the apoptosis effect of garcinol in a xenograft mouse model was also tested, suggesting a consistent result with PC-3 cell model. The tumor size was reduced more than 80 percent after the mouse accepted the garcinol treatment. Garcinol was demonstrated to have a strong antitumor activity through inhibiting autophagy and inducing apoptosis, which was discovered for the first time. Based on these findings, our data suggests that garcinol deserves further investigation as a potent chemopreventive agent.

Abstract
Purposeful attraction and aggregation of adult Coccinellidae at target sites would be useful for sampling purposes and pest suppression. We field-tested 1) lures in yellow and black pyramidal traps and 2) pyramidal traps that had been painted one or two colors (without lures) to determine if lures or trap color affected capture of adult Coccinellidae. In only one experiment with lures did a single rate of limonene increase trap capture, whereas no other lure ever did. Yellow traps, regardless of using a lure, always captured significantly more lady beetles than black traps. When single-color red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and white traps (without lures) were tested, yellow traps captured significantly more lady beetles. Of all species of Coccinellidae captured in these single-color traps, 95% were the exotic species Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) and Coccinella septempunctata L. H. axyridis alone dominated trap capture comprising 74.1% of all lady beetles. Two-color traps (yellow-green, yellow-orange, yellow-white, and yellow-black) never captured more than single-color yellow traps. These results demonstrate that yellow pyramidal traps can be used to purposefully attract, and when used without a collection device, possibly aggregate adult Coccinellidae at targeted field sites.

Abstract
Isogarcinol is a new immunosuppressant that we extracted from Garcinia mangostana L. In the present study, we elucidate its beneficial effect in chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) in mice -- a model for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in human. The oral administration of 60 mg/kg isogarcinol significantly reduced proteinuria, corrected the abnormal serum biochemical indicator, and decreased the amount of serum antibodies and lowered the renal histopathology score. In addition, isogarcinol alleviated the abnormal activation of CD4 T cells and decreased the expression of inflammatory genes and cytokines in the kidneys and peritoneal macrophages. The mechanism of action of isogarcinol is associated with downregulation of CD4 T cells and inflammatory effects. Therefore, we believe that isogarcinol may be a potential therapeutic drug candidate for future treatment of SLE.

Abstract
Tetrahydrohyperforin (IDN-5706) is a semisynthetic derivative of hyperforin, one of the main active components of Hypericum perforatum extracts. It showed remarkable positive effects on memory and cognitive performances in wild-type mice and in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, but little was known about the concentrations it can reach in the brain. The investigations reported herein show that repeated treatment of mice with tetrahydrohyperforin (20 mg/kg intraperitoneally, twice daily for 4 days and once on the fifth day) results in measurable concentrations in the brain, up to 367 ng/g brain (∼700 nM) 6 h after the last dose; these concentrations have significant effects on synaptic function in hippocampal slices. The other main finding was the identification and semiquantitative analysis of tetrahydrohyperforin metabolites. In plasma, three hydroxylated/dehydrogenated metabolites were the largest (M1-3) and were also formed in vitro on incubation of tetrahydrohyperforin with mouse liver microsomes; the fourth metabolite in abundance was a hydroxylated/deisopropylated derivative (M13), which was not predicted in vitro. These metabolites were all detected in the brain, with peak areas from 10% (M1) to ∼1.5% (M2, M3, and M13) of the parent compound. In summary, repeated treatment of mice with tetrahydrohyperforin gave brain concentrations that might well underlie its central pharmacological effects. We also provide the first metabolic profile of this compound.

Abstract
UNLABELLED CONTEXT : Terpenes and terpenoids are a diverse class of organic compounds produced by a variety of plants, particularly conifers. Chemically sensitive patients can be targeted by terpenes and terpenoids, resulting in a triggering of symptoms and pathology. Often patients cannot clear their symptoms from exposure to chemicals unless terpenes and terpenoids are avoided and neutralized along with chemical avoidance and treatment. OBJECTIVE This article evaluates the presence, diagnosis, and treatment of terpenes exposure in chemically sensitive patients. DESIGN A double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-part study was designed to establish the chemically sensitive state of the patients in part 1, followed by a second set of challenges to determine each patient's concurrent sensitivity to terpenes and terpenoids in part 2. In all of the challenges, normal saline was used as a control. A case report illustrates the history of 1 patient and describes the authors' treatment methods. SETTING The study was developed and conducted at the Environmental Health Center of Dallas (EHC-D) because the environment within the center is 5 times less polluted than the surrounding environments, as determined by quantitative air analysis and particulate counts. PARTICIPANTS A total of 45 chemically sensitive patients at EHC-D with odor sensitivity to terpenes. The cohort included 18 males and 27 females, aged 24-62 y.Intervention • Patients were deadapted (4 d) and evaluated in a 5-times-less-polluted environment, which was evaluated using air analysis and particulate counts. After deadaptation, the patients were challenged by inhalation in a controlled, less-polluted glass steel booth inside an environmentally controlled room with an ambient air dose of the toxics in the order of parts per billion (PPB) and parts per million (PPM). These toxics included formaldehyde, pesticide, cigarette smoke, ethanol, phenol, chlorine, new sprint, perfume, and placebo. They were also challenged intradermally with extracts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, orris root, ethanol, phenol, cigarette smoke, chlorine, newsprint, perfume, terpenes, terpenoids, and placebo. OUTCOME MEASURES Inhaled challenges recorded pulse, blood pressure, peak bronchial flow, and other signs and symptoms 30 min before and at 15-min intervals for 2 h postchallenge. Intradermal challenges recorded wheal size and the provocation of signs and symptoms. RESULTS : Different numbers of patients were tested for each terpenes source because of time-related factors or the cumulative effect of testing, which made patients unable to continue. Of 45 chemically sensitive patients in the study, 43 demonstrated sensitivity to terpenes. CONCLUSIONS This particular patient group was positive for a number of toxic and nontoxic chemicals provoking their symptoms. This study shows there was a connection between VOCs, other chemicals, and terpenes in chemically sensitive patients in a prospective cohort study. It has also shown the potential for terpenes to exacerbate symptoms of chemical sensitivity. Further research on this topic is recommended.

Abstract
Danshu capsule (DSC) is a medicinal compound in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is commonly used for the treatment of acute & chronic cholecystitis as well as choleithiasis. To study its choleretic effect, healthy rats were randomly divided into DSC high (DSCH, 900mg/kg), medium (DSCM, 450mg/kg), and low (DSCL, 225mg/kg) group, Xiaoyan Lidan tablet (XYLDT, 750mg/kg), and saline group. The bile was collected for 1h after 20-minute stabilization as the base level, and at 1h, 2h, 3h, and 4h after drug administration, respectively. Bile volume, total cholesterol, and total bile acid were measured at each time point. The results revealed that DSC significantly stimulated bile secretion, decreased total cholesterol level and increased total bile acid level. Therefore, it had choleretic effects. To identify the active components contributing to its choleretic effects, five major constituents which are menthol (39.33mg/kg), menthone (18.02mg/kg), isomenthone (8.18mg/kg), pluegone (3.31mg/kg), and limonene (4.39mg/kg) were tested on our rat model. The results showed that menthol and limonene could promote bile secretion when compared to DSC treatment (p > 0.05); Menthol, menthol and limonene could significantly decrease total cholesterol level (p<0.05 or p<0.01) as well as increase total bile acid level (p<0.05 or p<0.01); Isomenthone, as a isomer of menthone, existed slightly choleretic effects; Pluegone had no obvious role in bile acid efflux. These findings indicated that the choleretic effects of DSC may be attributed mainly to its three major constituents: menthol, menthone and limonene.

Abstract
Atranol and chloroatranol are strong contact allergens in oak moss absolute, a lichen extract used in perfumery. Fifteen subjects with contact allergy to oak moss absolute underwent a repeated open application test (ROAT) using solutions of an untreated oak moss absolute (sample A) and an oak moss absolute with reduced content of atranol and chloroatranol (sample B). All subjects were in addition patch-tested with serial dilutions of samples A and B. Statistically significantly more subjects reacted to sample A than to sample B in the patch tests. No corresponding difference was observed in the ROAT, though there was a significant difference in the time required to elicit a positive reaction. Still, the ROAT indicates that the use of a cosmetic product containing oak moss absolute with reduced levels of atranol and chloroatranol is capable of eliciting an allergic reaction in previously sensitised individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to verify the influence of prebrushing mouthwashes on dental plaque removal in children. METHODS This study had a double-blind, randomized, controlled, crossover, 25-day experimental design, including 38 12- to 14-year-olds. Four solutions were used as prebrushing mouthwashes (Colgate Plax Magic, Listerine Cool Blue Agent, water and dye, and water) by each participant with seven days' washout. The plaque index was evaluated before and after tooth-brushing during the experimental period. RESULTS Intergroup comparisons showed no significant differences in plaque reduction among evaluated solutions (Friedman test, P>.78). Significantly more plaque was present before vs. after tooth-brushing (Wilcoxon rank test, P<.001), independent of the surface (buccal or lingual/palatal). CONCLUSION Use of prebrushing mouthwashes by children does not influence plaque removal by tooth-brushing.

Abstract
CONTEXT The combination of antibiotics with natural products has demonstrated promising synergistic effects in several therapeutic studies. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a combination of an ethanol extract of Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All. (Anacardiaceae) (aroeira plant) and its essential oil with six antimicrobial drugs against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from clinical isolates. MATERIALS AND METHODS After identification of the chemical components by GC-MS, the antibacterial activity of the natural products and antibiotics was assessed by determining the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the microdilution method and concentrations ranging 8-512 μg/mL and 0.0012-2.5 mg/mL, respectively. Assays were performed to test for a possible synergistic action between the plant products and the antimicrobials, using the extract and the oil at a sub-inhibitory concentration (128 μg/mL) and antibiotic at concentrations varying between 8 and 512 μg/mL. RESULTS The GC-MS analysis identified the main compound as δ-carene (80.41%). The MIC of the natural products was >1024 μg/mL, except against S. aureus ATCC25923. Only the combinations of the natural products with gentamicin, amikacin and clindamycin were effective against S. aureus 358, enhancing the antibiotic activity by reducing the MIC. CONCLUSIONS The extract from aroeira showed a higher antibacterial activity and the oil was more effective in potentiating the activity of conventional antibiotics.

Abstract
Despite the high efficacy and safety of ESWL used to disintegrate stones in pyelocaliceal system and upper ureter, the issue of further reduction of the risk of complications of this procedure remains unresolved. The inclusion ofphytopreparations with anti-inflammatory and lithokinetic properties in the scheme of perioperative treatment is one of the ways for prevent complications of ESWL. The effect of the drug Rowatinex on the process of discharge of calculi fragments after ESWL is evaluated. The frequency and intensity of qualitative changes of urine after appointment this drug were assessed. It is concluded that Rowatinex has positive impact on the final result of ESWL in the case of its inclusion in the complex medical treatment, which manifests in terms of reducing the time of discharge of fragments, mitigation of subjective symptoms, as well as reducing the frequency of subclinical bacteriuria and severe complications.

Abstract
Among the natural compounds, terpenoids play an important role in the drug discovery process for tropical diseases. The aim of the present work was to isolate antiprotozoal compounds from Ambrosia elatior and A. scabra. The sesquiterpene lactone (STL) cumanin was isolated from A. elatior whereas two other STLs, psilostachyin and cordilin, and one sterol glycoside, daucosterol, were isolated from A. scabra. Cumanin and cordilin were active against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes showing 50% inhibition concentrations (IC50) values of 12 µM and 26 µM, respectively. Moreover, these compounds are active against bloodstream trypomastigotes, regardless of the T. cruzi strain tested. Psilostachyin and cumanin were also active against amastigote forms with IC50 values of 21 µM and 8 µM, respectively. By contrast, daucosterol showed moderate activity on epimastigotes and trypomastigotes and was inactive against amastigote forms. We also found that cumanin and psilostachyin exhibited an additive effect in their trypanocidal activity when these two drugs were tested together. Cumanin has leishmanicidal activity with growth inhibition values greater than 80% at a concentration of 5 µg/ml (19 µM), against both L. braziliensis and L. amazonensis promastigotes. In an in vivo model of T. cruzi infection, cumanin was more active than benznidazole, producing an 8-fold reduction in parasitemia levels during the acute phase of the infection compared with the control group, and more importantly, a reduction in mortality with 66% of the animals surviving, in comparison with 100% mortality in the control group. Cumanin also showed nontoxic effects at the doses assayed in vivo, as determined using markers of hepatic damage.

Abstract
Monoterpenes, which are among the major components of plant essential oils, are known for their ecological roles as well for pharmaceutical properties. Geraniol, an acyclic monoterpene induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis/senescence in various cancer cells and plants; however, the genes involved in the process and the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we demonstrate that treatment of tomato plants with geraniol results in induction of senescence due to a substantial alteration in transcriptome. We have identified several geraniol-responsive protein encoding genes in tomato using suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) approach. These genes comprise of various components of signal transduction, cellular metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS), ethylene signalling, apoptosis and DNA damage response. Upregulation of NADPH oxidase and antioxidant genes, and increase in ROS level after geraniol treatment point towards the involvement of ROS in geraniol-mediated senescence. The delayed onset of seedling death and induced expression of geraniol-responsive genes in geraniol-treated ethylene receptor mutant (Nr) suggest that geraniol-mediated senescence involves both ethylene dependent and independent pathways. Moreover, expression analysis during tomato ripening revealed that geraniol-responsive genes are also associated with the natural organ senescence process.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading cancer-related causes of death in the western world with an urgent need for new treatment strategies. Recently, hyperforin and nemorosone have been described as promising anti-cancer lead compounds. While hyperforin has been thoroughly investigated in vitro and in vivo, in vivo data for nemorosone are still missing. Thus, we investigated the growth-inhibitory potential of nemorosone on pancreatic cancer xenografts in NMRI nu/nu mice and determined basic pharmacokinetic parameters. Xenograft tumors were treated with nemorosone and gemcitabine, the current standard of care. Tumor sections were subjected to H&E as well as caspase 3 and Ki-67 staining. Nemorosone plasma kinetics were determined by HPLC and mass spectrometry. Induction of CYP3A4 and other metabolizing enzymes by nemorosone and hyperforin was tested on primary hepatocytes using qRT-PCR. At a dose of 50 mg/kg nemorosone per day, a significant growth-inhibitory effect was observed in pancreatic cancer xenografts. The compound was well tolerated and rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream with a half-life of approximately 30 min. Different metabolites were detected, possibly resembling CYP3A4-independent oxidation products. It is concluded that nemorosone is a potential anti-cancer lead compound with good bioavailability, little side-effects and promising growth-inhibitory effects, thus representing a valuable compound for a combination therapy approach.

Abstract
Coping strategies including smoke screens are used against nuisance bites of Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera:Simuliidae) in onchocerciasis endemic communities. To find more effective alternatives, the efficacy of commercially available N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) products with active concentrations of 9.5, 13, 25, 50 and 98.1-100% and 'NO MAS,' (active component: para-menthane-3,8-diol and lemon grass oil) were tested at Bui-Agblekame, Ghana. A Latin square study design was implemented using eight groups of two vector collectors each, who used repellents (treatment), mineral oil or nothing each day until the end of the study. Flies were caught and their numbers each hour recorded using the standard methods for onchocerciasis transmission studies. T-tests were used to compare the mean duration of protection and a one-way analysis of variance controlling for catchers and repellents was performed. Tukey's test was used to compare protection by repellents and mineral oil. The highest percentage protection was 80.8% by NO MAS and the least 42.5% by the 13% DEET product. The period of absolute protection was 5 h by NO MAS and 1 h by 50% DEET product. No significant increase in protection was offered beyond 25% active DEET products and no significance was observed in terms of catcher × repellent effect (F = 1.731, d.f. = 48, P = 0.209).

Abstract
When herbivores come in contact with volatile plant secondary compounds (PSC) that enter the nasal passages the only barrier between the nasal cavity and the brain is the nasal epithelium and the biotransformation enzymes present there. The expression of two biotransformation enzymes Cytochrome P450 2B (CYP2B) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was investigated in the nasal epithelia and livers of three populations of woodrats. One population of Neotoma albigula was fed juniper that contains volatile terpenes. Juniper caused upregulation of CYP2B and GST in the nasal epithelium and the expression of CYP2B and GST in the nasal epithelium was correlated to liver expression, showing that the nasal epithelia responds to PSC and the response is similar to the liver. Two populations of Neotoma bryanti were fed creosote that contains less volatile phenolics. The creosote naive animals upregulated CYP2B in their nasal epithelia while the creosote experienced animals upregulated GST. There was no correlation between CYP2B and GST expression in the nasal epithelia and livers of either population. The response of the nasal epithelium to PSC seems to be an evolved response that is PSC and experience dependent.

Abstract
Biofilm-related infections caused by Candida albicans and associated drug resistant micro-organisms are serious problems for immunocompromised populations. Molecules which can prevent or remove biofilms are needed. Twenty-eight terpenoids of plant origin were analysed for their activity against growth, virulence attributes, and biofilms of C. albicans. Eighteen molecules exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations of <2 mg ml(-1) for planktonic growth. Selected molecules inhibited yeast to hyphal dimorphism at low concentrations (0.031-0.5 mg ml(-1)), while adhesion to a solid surface was prevented at 0.5-2 mg ml(-1). Treatment with 14 terpenoids resulted in significant (p < 0.05) inhibition of biofilm formation, and of these, linalool, nerol, isopulegol, menthol, carvone, α-thujone, and farnesol exhibited biofilm-specific activity. Eight terpenoids were identified as inhibitors of mature biofilms. This study demonstrated the antibiofilm potential of terpenoids, which need to be further explored as therapeutic strategy against biofilm associated infections of C. albicans.

Abstract
Alpha 2u-globulin mediated hyaline droplet nephropathy (HDN) is a male rat specific lesion induced when a compound or metabolite binds to alpha 2u-globulin. The objective of this study was to investigate if the newer and more sensitive renal biomarkers would be altered with HDN as well as be able to distinguish between HDN and oxidative stress-induced kidney injury. Rats were dosed orally for 7 days to determine (1) if HDN (induced by 2-propanol or D-limonene) altered the newer renal biomarkers and not BUN or creatinine, (2) if renal biomarkers could distinguish between HDN and oxidative stress-induced kidney injury (induced by potassium bromate), (3) sensitivity of HDN-induced renal biomarker changes relative to D-limonene dose, and (4) reversibility of HDN and renal biomarkers, using vehicle or 300 mg/kg/day D-limonene with 7 days of dosing and necropsies scheduled over the period of Days 8-85. HDN-induced renal biomarker changes in male rats were potentially compound specific: (1) 2-propanol induced mild HDN without increased renal biomarkers, (2) potassium bromate induced moderate HDN with increased clusterin, and (3) D-limonene induced marked HDN with increased αGST, μGST and albumin. Administration of potassium bromate did not result in oxidative stress-induced kidney injury, based on histopathology and renal biomarkers creatinine and BUN. The compound D-limonene induced a dose dependent increase in HDN severity and renal biomarker changes without altering BUN, creatinine or NAG: (1) minimal induction of HDN and no altered biomarkers at 10 mg/kg/day, (2) mild induction of HDN with increased αGST and μGST at 50 mg/kg/day and (3) marked induction of HDN with increased αGST, μGST and albumin at 300 mg/kg/day. HDN induced by D-limonene was reversible, but with a variable renal biomarker pattern over time: Day 8 there was increased αGST, μGST and albumin; on Day 15 increased clusterin, albumin and Kim-1. In summary, HDN altered the newer and more sensitive renal biomarkers in a time and possibly compound dependent manner.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate dermal pharmacokinetics of terpinen-4-ol in rats following topical administration of plai oil derived from the rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. Unbound terpinen-4-ol concentrations in dermal tissue were measured by microdialysis. The dermal pharmacokinetic study of terpinen-4-ol was performed under non-occlusive conditions. The oil was topically applied at a dose of 2, 4, and 8 mg/cm2 plai oil corresponding to the amount of 1.0, 1.9, and 3.8 mg/cm2 terpinen-4-ol, respectively. Following topical application of the oil, terpinen-4-ol rapidly distributed into the dermis and demonstrated linear pharmacokinetics with no changes in the dose-normalized area under the concentration-time curves across the investigated dosage range. The mean percentages of free terpinen-4-ol distributed in the dermis per amount of administered were 0.39 ± 0.06 %, 0.41 ± 0.08 %, and 0.30 ± 0.03 % for 2, 4, and 8 mg/cm2 doses, respectively. The dermal pharmacokinetics of terpinen-4-ol could provide information for its further formulation development and therapy schedules.

Abstract
Learning induced changes in protein acetylation, mediated by histone acetyl transferases (HATs), and the antagonistic histone deacetylases (HDACs) play a critical role in memory formation. The status of histone acetylation affects the interaction between the transcription-complex and DNA and thus regulates transcription-dependent processes required for long-term memory (LTM). While the majority of studies report on the role of elevated acetylation in memory facilitation, we address the impact of both, increased and decreased acetylation on formation of appetitive olfactory memory in honeybees. We show that learning-induced changes in the acetylation of histone H3 at aminoacid-positions H3K9 and H3K18 exhibit distinct and different dynamics depending on the training strength. A strong training that induces LTM leads to an immediate increase in acetylation at H3K18 that stays elevated for hours. A weak training, not sufficient to trigger LTM, causes an initial increase in acetylation at H3K18, followed by a strong reduction in acetylation at H3K18 below the control group level. Acetylation at position H3K9 is not affected by associative conditioning, indicating specific learning-induced actions on the acetylation machinery. Elevating acetylation levels by blocking HDACs after conditioning leads to an improved memory. While memory after strong training is enhanced for at least 2 days, the enhancement after weak training is restricted to 1 day. Reducing acetylation levels by blocking HAT activity after strong training leads to a suppression of transcription-dependent LTM. The memory suppression is also observed in case of weak training, which does not require transcription processes. Thus, our findings demonstrate that acetylation-mediated processes act as bidirectional regulators of memory formation that facilitate or suppress memory independent of its transcription-requirement.

Abstract
Saffron, an extract from Crocus sativus, has been largely used in traditional medicine for its antiapoptotic and anticarcinogenic properties. In this work, we investigate the effects of safranal, a component of saffron stigmas, in attenuating retinal degeneration in the P23H rat model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. We demonstrate that administration of safranal to homozygous P23H line-3 rats preserves both photoreceptor morphology and number. Electroretinographic recordings showed higher a- and b-wave amplitudes under both photopic and scotopic conditions in safranal-treated versus non-treated animals. Furthermore, the capillary network in safranal-treated animals was preserved, unlike that found in untreated animals. Our findings indicate that dietary supplementation with safranal slows photoreceptor cell degeneration and ameliorates the loss of retinal function and vascular network disruption in P23H rats. This work also suggests that safranal could be potentially useful to retard retinal degeneration in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

Abstract
Terpinen-4-ol, an active component of tea tree oil, exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, the high volatilization of terpinen-4-ol and its nonwettability property have limited its application. Our objective was to synthesize novel nanocarriers to deliver and protect terpinen-4-ol. The polyethylene glycol (PEG)-stabilized lipid nanoparticles were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscope, Zetasizer, and differential scanning calorimetry. These nanoparticles had an average diameter of 397 nm and a Ζ-potential of 10 mV after being modified by glycine. Results showed that homogeneous particle size, high drug loading, stability, and targeting were obtained by the nanoparticles. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry showed a sustained release trend from nanoparticles for terpinen-4-ol. Minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum biofilm eradication concentration were tested against Candida albicans ATCC 11231. Studies on isolated mitochondria showed the blockage of biofilm respiration and inhibition of enzyme activity. The effects can be ascribed to localization of terpinen-4-ol on the membrane of mitochondria.

Abstract
PURPOSE To test the hypothesis that using Listerine mouthwash prior to administration of topical nasal lidocaine will result in improved pain and comfort outcomes during flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL). DESIGN Randomized, controlled trial. SUBJECTS A total of 120 patients were randomized to receive a combination of either treatment or placebo mouthwash followed by treatment or placebo nasal spray prior to an FNL examination. OUTCOME MEASURES Pain and discomfort using a 100 mm visual analogue scale. RESULTS The use of lidocaine significantly reduced pain (p = .011) and discomfort (p = .008) compared to placebo nasal spray. Using Listerine prior to administration of lidocaine resulted in the largest reductions. Patients having an extended nasal examination reported more pain (p = .001) and discomfort (p = .03) levels while demonstrating a greater benefit of topical lidocaine compared to those undergoing a primary laryngeal examination (p < .001). DISCUSSION Using Listerine prior to application of lidocaine nasal spray reduces the pain and discomfort of FNL. This effect was most clinically significant in patients undergoing an extended or full bilateral nasal examination.

Abstract
CONTEXT Clerodendrum infortunatum Linn. is a widely used plant in the Indian indigenous system of medicine for the treatment of tumors. OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated the anticancer activity of methanol extract of C. infortunatum (MECI) against Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice and isolation of bioactive terpenoids from it. METHODS HPLC analysis of the methanol extract showed the presence of three major components. Out of those, two compounds were isolated and characterized as oleanolic acid and clerodinin A. The anticancer activity of MECI was assessed by measuring the tumor growth response, percentage increase of life span, study of hematological parameters, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity like glutathion and CAT. In vitro cytotoxicity assay was also performed using EAC cell lines. RESULT AND CONCLUSION Treatment with MECI causes significant decrease in the tumor cell volume and increase in the life span. The median survival time (MST) of EAC control group was found as 19.42 ± 0.91 d, whereas the MST was increased to 23.44 ± 2.69 d and 27.57 ± 2.57 d for the groups treated with MECI at 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively. All the hematological parameters, malonaldehyde content and antioxidant enzymes' activity were restored towards the normal level. IC(50) value of MECI was found as 498.33 µg/mL in cytotoxicity study. The experimental results suggested that MECI has significant anticancer activity, which can be attributed to the presence of oleanolic acid and clerodinin A.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanoemulsion composed of neem oil and non-ionic surfactant Tween 20, with a mean droplet size ranging from 31.03 to 251.43 nm, was formulated for various concentrations of the oil and surfactant. The larvicidal effect of the formulated neem oil nanoemulsion was checked against Culex quinquefasciatus. RESULTS O/W emulsion was prepared using neem oil, Tween 20 and water. Nanoemulsion of 31.03 nm size was obtained at a 1:3 ratio of oil and surfactant, and it was found to be stable. The larger droplet size (251.43 nm) shifted to a smaller size of 31.03 nm with increase in the concentration of Tween 20. The viscosity of the nanoemulsion increased with increasing concentration of Tween 20. The lethal concentration (LC50) of the nanoemulsion against Cx. quinquefasciatus was checked for 1:0.30, 1:1.5 and 1:3 ratios of oil and surfactant respectively. The LC50 decreased with droplet size. The LC50 for the ratio 1:3 nanoemulsions was 11.75 mg L(-1). CONCLUSION The formulated nanoemulsion of 31.03 nm size was found to be an effective larvicidal agent. This is the first time that a neem oil nanoemulsion of this droplet size has been reported. It may be a good choice as a potent and selective larvicide for Cx. quinquefasciatus.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of saffron odor on symptoms unique to women, such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain) and irregular menstruation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-five women with a normal sense of smell were exposed to saffron odor for 20 min. Saliva samples were then collected to measure levels of cortisol (C), testosterone (T) and 17-β estradiol (E) by enzyme immunoassay, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was administered as a psychological test. RESULTS Saffron odor significantly decreased C levels after short-term stimulation (20 min) in both follicular and luteal phases. E level after exposure to saffron odor was increased in both the follicular- and luteal-phase groups. STAI score decreased in the follicular and luteal phases in the saffron group. CONCLUSIONS The present findings support the existence of physiological and psychological effects of saffron odor in women. Our results indicate that saffron odor exert some effects in the treatment of PMS, dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation. This is the first report to suggest that saffron odor may be effective in treating menstrual distress.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether natural smoking stain could be removed/inhibited effectively by a toothpaste containing 5% d-limonene. For comparison and contrast, the effects of d-limonene on tea stain were also assessed. METHODS The design was a randomized controlled double-blind trial with parallel groups. Toothpastes were: A: positive control with perlite whitening formulation; B: A+5% d-limonene; C: D + 5% d-limonene; D: negative control. The extrinsic stains were measured using Lobene Stain Index. Following baseline examination, all subjects were randomly assigned to one of the four toothpaste groups and instructed to brush with the assigned products twice daily. Subjects returned to the clinic after 4-week brushing for stain removal assessment, then all extrinsic stains, plaque and supragingival calculus were removed and use of assigned products was continued for another 4 weeks, and the stain scores were repeated for inhibition assessment. RESULTS A total of 408 subjects, 201 with smoking stains and 207 with tea stains, participated in the trial. 5% d-limonene combined with Perlite whitening formulation significantly reduced stain scores both for smoking stain removal and inhibition (P < 0.05). Furthermore, 5% d-limonene alone (in negative formulation) exhibited an additional advantage for smoking stain inhibition (P < 0.05), but the advantage was not found for long-standing smoking stain removal (P > 0.05). The additional advantage of 5% d-limonene was shown neither for removal nor for inhibition in the tea stain study (P > 0.05). All test products were well tolerated over the study period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Both collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and pristane-induced arthritis (PIA) are commonly used rat models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of this study was systematically to compare the differences between CIA and PIA in Dark Agouti (DA) rats. METHODS The CIA was induced by immunising DA rats intradermally with collagen type (C) and PIA was induced by injecting subcutaneously with pristane. The arthritis was evaluated macroscopically and microscopically. Nitric oxide (NO) level of plasma was determined by Griess reaction method. Plasma autoimmune antibodies, including C specific IgG antibody (anti-C IgG), cyclic citrullinated peptide specific IgG antibody (anti-CCP IgG), IgM and IgG rheumatoid factors (IgM RF and IgG RF), were detected by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The onset of PIA rats was earlier than that of CIA rats. The involved sites of PIA rats were mostly wrist/ankle and metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal (MCP/MTP) joints while those of CIA rats were primarily distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints. NO level of plasma was increased in PIA rats, as anti-C IgG, anti-CCP IgG, IgM RF and IgG RF levels of plasma were increased in CIA rats. The kidney hyaline casts were more frequent in CIA rats than in control rats, with 9/12 in PIA group, 8/8 in CIA, and 4/8 in control, respectively. CONCLUSIONS PIA mainly affected wrist/ankle joints and MCP/MTP joints, had more severe inflammation and hardly involved other organs; while CIA mostly influenced DIP joints, had more autoimmune antibodies in plasma, and always showed hyaline casts in kidney. These findings will be useful to select the animal model of RA.

Abstract
Functional foods have been a developing area of food science research for the past decade. Many foods are derived from plants that naturally contain compounds beneficial to human health and can often prevent certain diseases. Plants containing phytochemicals with potent anticancer and antioxidant activities have spurred development of many new functional foods. This has led to the creation of functional foods to target health problems such as obesity and inflammation. More recent research into the use of plant phytoalexins as nutritional components has opened up a new area of food science. Phytoalexins are produced by plants in response to stress, fungal attack, or elicitor treatment and are often antifungal or antibacterial compounds. Although phytoalexins have been investigated for their possible role in plant defense, until recently they have gone unexplored as nutritional components in human foods. These underutilized plant compounds may possess key beneficial properties including antioxidant activity, anti-inflammation activity, cholesterol-lowering ability, and even anticancer activity. For these reasons, phytoalexin-enriched foods would be classified as functional foods. These phytoalexin-enriched functional foods would benefit the consumer by providing "health-enhanced" food choices and would also benefit many underutilized crops that may produce phytoalexins that may not have been considered to be beneficial health-promoting foods.

This includes nasal sprays, especially vasoconstrictors such as pseudo-ephedrine and, in young children, menthol, camphor, and terpene derivatives.
