Non-tobacco nicotine E-cigarette use and flavored E-cigarette use among young adults in the United States

BACKGROUND

E-cigarette flavors can create sensations of sweetness and coolness while masking the aversiveness of nicotine. Recently, non-tobacco nicotine (NTN) products were introduced to the market, but little is known about flavors in NTN e-cigarette use. We examined associations between flavors (i.e., sweet, mint/menthol) and susceptibility to and use of NTN e-cigarettes.

METHODS

1239 US young adults (18-25 years) completed an anonymous, online survey in Fall 2021. The analytic sample included 520 participants who had used e-cigarettes and heard of NTN. Multinomial logistic regression models analyzed associations of flavored e-cigarette use (sweet and mint/menthol) with NTN e-cigarette use status (i.e., current [past-month] use, past [ever but not current] use, susceptible to use, and non-susceptible to use [reference]).

RESULTS

Overall, 46.2% of participants reported current NTN use, 14.8% reported past use, 16.7% were susceptible to use, and 22.3% reported no susceptibility. Participants reported dual-use of sweet and mint/menthol NTN e-cigarette flavors (56.5%), sweet flavors use (24.8%), and mint/menthol flavor use (1.7%). Ever dual use of sweet and mint/menthol flavors was associated with current (OR = 9.64, 95%CI: 3.21-28.98) and past NTN e-cigarette use (8.30, [2.10-32.80]). Ever sweet flavor use was associated with current NTN use (3.80, 95%CI: 1.44-10.03) and susceptibility to future use (4.25, [1.53-11.81]). Similar findings were observed for mint/menthol flavors (current: 5.03, [1.41-17.99]; susceptible: 5.65, [1.64-19.51]).

CONCLUSION

The use of sweet and mint/menthol flavors was significantly associated with NTN e-cigarette use among US young adults, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance of flavored NTN e-cigarettes and appropriate regulations to discourage use.

E-cigarette dependence and cooling flavor use are linked among youth

BACKGROUND

E-cigarette flavors that produce cooling sensations may reduce nicotine harshness and enhance appeal among youth. While previous research has shown that use of cooling flavors is associated with more frequent vaping among youth, it is unknown whether the same holds true for e-cigarette dependence. This study examines the relationship between cooling flavor use and e-cigarette dependence among youth accounting for vaping frequency.

METHODS

In Fall 2022, a survey was conducted among Connecticut high school students to assess past-month nicotine e-cigarette use, ever use of cooling flavors, cooling flavor types (e.g., fruit-cooling), and e-cigarette dependence. Analyses were restricted to those with past-month nicotine and nicotine-free e-cigarette use and complete data (n=204). Multivariable linear regressions were run to examine the association between cooling flavor use and e-cigarette dependence, adjusting for demographics, e-cigarette use characteristics, and other tobacco product use.

RESULTS

78.4% of the sample used cooling e-cigarette flavors, with 55.0% using mint-cooling flavors and 52.5% using fruit-cooling flavors. Regression results observed that cooling flavor use was associated with higher e-cigarette dependence (ꞵ=1.53, SE=0.63, p=0.017), with those who used cooling flavors having higher e-cigarette dependence than those who did not (M=5.78 [SD=5.33] vs. 2.84 [3.19]).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that cooling flavor use is significantly associated with e-cigarette dependence among youth. While regulations often target menthol flavor, tobacco control agencies should consider restricting any flavor that can produce cooling sensations, even if they are not traditional menthol products, as cooling flavors is associated with youth e-cigarette dependence.

Sources of exposure to non-tobacco nicotine electronic nicotine delivery systems and associations with susceptibility to use and use behaviors among young adults in the United States

INTRODUCTION

The Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) industry recently introduced non-tobacco nicotine (NTN), which is not tobacco-derived and is often marketed as "tobacco-free nicotine." Given its novelty, it is important to understand where young adults learn about NTN ENDS. This study examined sources of exposure to NTN ENDS and relationships with NTN ENDS use and susceptibility.

METHODS

We analyzed online survey data collected in Fall 2021 from 642 young adults (18-25 years) who had heard of NTN ENDS. We assessed 9 sources of NTN ENDS exposure (e.g., retail stores, social media) and examined associations between sources of exposure and NTN current (past-month) use, lifetime (non-current) use, and susceptibility to use, adjusting for demographics and other tobacco product use.

RESULTS

Participants reported current NTN ENDS use (37.4%), lifetime use (12.0%), susceptibility (18.5%), or no susceptibility to use (32.1%). The most common sources of NTN ENDS exposure were retail stores (87.7%) and social media (81.0%). Exposure to NTN ENDS via social media was associated with greater odds of current NTN ENDS use (vs. no susceptibility) (aOR = 1.83, 95%CI: 1.02-3.28). Exposure via online streaming platforms was associated with greater odds of current (aOR = 1.75, 95%CI: 1.08-2.82) and lifetime NTN ENDS use (aOR = 2.42, 95%CI: 1.25-4.68).

CONCLUSIONS

Young adults were exposed to and learned about NTN ENDS from diverse sources, primarily retail shops and social media. Further, exposure via social media and streaming platforms were associated with NTN ENDS use. Future studies should explore the content of NTN information from various sources to inform prevention efforts.

Cardiovascular Health Effects and Synthetic Cooling Agents in E-cigarettes Labeled as 'clear' Marketed in Massachusetts After the Tobacco Product Flavoring Ban

Introduction

Massachusetts (MA) enacted statewide regulation on all flavored tobacco products in June 2020. Thereafter, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) labeled 'clear' emerged on the market. We aimed to combine cardiovascular health effects with chemical analysis of 'clear' e-cigarettes.

Methods

We measured acute changes in blood pressure and heart rate following a 10-minute structured use of participants' own e-cigarette, comparing 'clear' e-cigarette users with other flavored e-cigarette users and non-users. Chemical characterization and quantification of relevant flavorings and cooling agents (WS-3, WS-23) of 19 'clear'-labeled disposable e-cigarette liquids was carried out by GC/MS.

Results

After the ban, participants that used 'clear' labeled e-cigarettes increased from 0% to 21%. Increase in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate was significantly greater in 'clear' e-cigarettes users (n=22) compared to both non-'clear' flavored e-cigarette users (n=114) and non-users (n=72). We saw similar results in heart rate when comparing Juul e-cigarette and 'clear' users; Juul was used as a reference as synthetic coolants WS-3 or WS-23 were not detected in these.All (19/19) 'clear' e-liquids were found to contain synthetic cooling agents WS-23 and/or WS-3, menthol (18/19), as well as other flavorings (12/19).

Discussion

The detected presence of menthol alongside other flavorings in tested 'clear' products is a direct violation of the MA flavored tobacco product regulation, warranting stricter monitoring for new products and constituents. 'clear' e-cigarette use led to greater hemodynamic effects compared to other flavored e-cigarettes and Juul, which raises questions about the effect of cooling agents on users.

Changes in weight among individuals with psychiatric conditions or socioeconomic disadvantage assigned to smoke very low nicotine content cigarettes

Nicotine abstinence leads to weight gain, which could be an unintended consequence of a nicotine reduction policy. This secondary analysis used weekly assessments of weight and ratings of "increased appetite/hunger/weight gain" collected in three 12-week, randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of cigarettes differing in nicotine dose (15.8, 2.4, or 0.4 mg/g) among individuals with affective disorders, opioid use disorder (OUD), and socioeconomically disadvantaged women. Linear mixed models tested differences by dose and time. Analyses first collapsed across populations and then separated out individuals with OUD because biomarkers suggested they used substantially more noncombusted nicotine. Across populations, weight increased significantly over time, averaging 1.03 kg (p < .001), but did not vary by dose nor was there any interaction of dose/time. "Increased appetite/hunger/weight gain" ratings increased significantly as a function of dose, with differences between low and high doses (1.95 and 1.73, respectively, p = .01), but not by time nor any interaction. In the combined group of individuals with affective disorders and socioeconomically disadvantaged women, weight and "increased appetite/hunger/weight gain" ratings increased significantly by dose, with differences between low and high doses (1.43 vs. 0.73 kg, p = .003 and 2.00 vs. 1.76, p = .02, respectively). Among individuals with OUD, there were no significant effects of any kind on either outcome. Individuals with affective disorders and socioeconomically disadvantaged women gained weight and reported more subjective appetite/weight gain when given 0.4, but not 2.4 mg/g cigarettes, despite comparable decreases in nicotine exposure. Why young adults use tobacco-free nicotine E-cigarettes: An analysis of qualitative data

BACKGROUND

Tobacco-free nicotine (TFN) is often marketed as being better tasting and healthier than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN). Studies have yet to systematically characterize subjective experiences using TFN e-cigarettes. This qualitative study explored young adults' reasons for using TFN e-cigarettes and perceptions of differences between using TFN and TDN e-cigarettes.

METHOD

We conducted a national online Qualtrics survey of U.S. young adults aged 18-25 years in October 2021. Respondents who reported lifetime TFN e-cigarette use (n = 317, mean age: 20.8 (SD:2.2), 53.9 % female) provided write-in responses to open-ended questions assessing reasons for using TFN e-cigarettes and perceptions of differences between TFN and TDN e-cigarettes. Responses from participants were thematically analyzed by independent raters.

RESULTS

Reasons for using TFN e-cigarettes included product taste/flavor, health reasons (e.g. believing TFN was healthy), and product accessibility. Perceptions of differences between TFN and TDN e-cigarettes included differences in taste/ flavor and acute psychoactive and physical effects (e.g., nicotine buzz, throat hit), with TFN e-cigarettes being described as generally stronger and superior relative to TDN e-cigarettes.

CONCLUSION

These qualitative data suggest that taste and perceived health benefits are primary reasons that young adults try TFN e-cigarettes. Compared to TDN, young adults perceive TFN as better tasting with different psychoactive and less aversive effects. Determining if these perceived reasons for use and differences occur in blinded human experimental studies is a necessary next step to understanding TFN e-cigarette use. Additionally, understanding why young adults use TFN e-cigarettes is important in the development of prevention communication about these products.

Psychometric evaluation of the sensory e-cigarette expectancies scale for use with adolescents

BACKGROUND

The Sensory E-cigarette Expectancies Scale (SEES) has demonstrated solid psychometric properties for use with adults. It assesses expectancies for enjoying the taste and smell of vaping, experiencing pleasurable physical sensations, and enjoying creating vapor clouds. We evaluated psychometric properties of the SEES for use with adolescents.

METHODS

In Fall 2022, 4,855 students from eight Connecticut high schools completed an anonymous, cross-sectional, online survey. Our analytic sample (n = 724) endorsed lifetime e-cigarette use and completed the SEES. Psychometric analyses included factor analyses, internal reliability, measurement invariance, between-groups differences, and relationships with vaping outcomes.

RESULTS

The three-factor SEES structure was confirmed. Internal reliability of each subscale was excellent (range: 0.88-0.95). The SEES was invariant by sex (male/female), race (Black/White/Other), Hispanic ethnicity (no/yes), nicotine e-cigarette use (no/yes), any past-month vaping (no/yes), daily vaping (no/yes), and vaping status (a variable created based on the distribution of past-month vaping frequency [0; 1-4; 5-20; 21+ days]). Those who reported using nicotine e-cigarettes, past-month vaping, daily vaping, and vaping on 21+ days in the past month reported stronger scores on each subscale compared to their respective counterparts. In adjusted models, expecting Pleasurable Physical Sensations was associated with total flavors used, past-month vaping frequency, and e-cigarette dependence. Enjoyment of Taste and Smell was positively associated with total flavors used and e-cigarette dependence. Enjoyment of Vapor Clouds was positively associated with total flavors used and past-month vaping frequency.

CONCLUSIONS

Given its strong psychometric properties, the SEES can be used in future research to assess sensory-related vaping expectancies in youth.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the N with the left-handed neutrino states for the N mass range 3  GeV Collapse

Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Reactions to using other nicotine and tobacco products instead of menthol cigarettes: A qualitative study of people who smoke menthol cigarettes in the United States

The US Food and Drug Administration is considering banning menthol cigarettes, which could result in some people who smoke menthol cigarettes switching to other tobacco products (OTPs). This qualitative study explored reactions to using OTPs instead of menthol cigarettes. People who smoke menthol cigarettes (N=40) completed a behavioral economic assessment of the effects of menthol cigarette price increases on OTP purchasing. At the highest price, most participants could not afford menthol cigarettes. Instead, they could purchase non-menthol cigarettes, little cigars/cigarillos (LCCs), e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, or medicinal nicotine, or they could abstain from tobacco use. Participants used the OTPs they purchased for three days. During follow-up sessions, participants (n=35) completed semi-structured interviews discussing their purchasing-decisions and experiences using OTPs instead of menthol cigarettes. Interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis methods. Factors influencing purchasing decisions included flavor, price, prior use of OTPs, interest in trying new OTPs, and perceived ability to satisfy nicotine cravings. Participants described positive experiences using e-cigarettes including the "refreshing" menthol flavor, ability to use in places where cigarettes are prohibited, and convenience of use relative to smoking. Among those using non-menthol cigarettes, many reported they were acceptable but less satisfying products compared to menthol cigarettes while others reported negative reactions to them such as tasting like "cardboard". Reactions to smoking LCCs were mostly unfavorable but participants said it gave them "something to light". Multiple considerations may affect switching to OTPs in light of pending menthol cigarette regulation including the availability of menthol-flavored alternatives and (dis)satisfaction with OTPs.

Accurately classifying cannabis blunt use as tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use

BACKGROUND

Historically, blunt use constituted tobacco-cannabis co-use based on the products available for creating blunts (e.g., hollowed-out cigars filled with cannabis). With the introduction of tobacco-free blunt wraps (e.g., hemp wraps), blunt use now may constitute tobacco-cannabis co-use or exclusive cannabis use. We examined adolescents' use of tobacco and tobacco-free blunt products and highlighted how misclassification of tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use may occur if products used to make blunts are not assessed.

METHODS

4855 students from eight Connecticut high schools completed an online survey in 2022. Use of tobacco products for making blunts (e.g., cigarillos, tobacco blunt wraps) and tobacco-free blunt wraps were assessed as was the use of other tobacco products (e.g., e-cigarettes, cigarettes, hookah). The analytic sample comprised 475 students who endorsed lifetime blunt use.

RESULTS

Tobacco-free blunt wraps (72.6%) were the most popular product for making blunts, followed by cigarillos (56.5%), tobacco blunt wraps (49.2%), and large cigars (13.0%). When classified into mutually exclusive groups, students reported exclusive tobacco-free blunt use (32.3%), exclusive tobacco product blunt use (27.4%), or use of both tobacco product and tobacco-free blunts (40.3%). Among those exclusively using tobacco-free blunts, 13.4% endorsed no tobacco product use.

CONCLUSIONS

Tobacco-free blunt wraps were very popular among high school adolescents, highlighting the importance of assessing products used for making blunts. Assuming that blunts contain tobacco without considering tobacco-free blunts can lead to misclassification of blunt use as tobacco-cannabis co-use when it actually reflects exclusive cannabis use, potentially leading to inflated estimates of tobacco use.

Considerations of Sex and Gender in FDA Tobacco Regulation

The first nicotine product tried is associated with current multiple nicotine product use and nicotine dependence among a nationally representative sample of U.S. youths

This study examines the demographic factors associated with youths' first product tried (i.e., cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, or smokeless tobacco). This study also evaluates whether the first product tried is associated with future nicotine product use (i.e., no use, single product use, and multiple product use) and nicotine dependence. Participants were 1999 youths (ages 12-17 years) who had ever tried a nicotine product and completed the Population Assessment of Tobacco Health study's Wave 1 (2013-2014) and Wave 4 (2016-2018) assessments. Two separate multinomial logistic regression models examined the association between 1) demographic factors and the first product tried at Wave 1 and 2) the first product tried at Wave 1 and past-30-day product use status at Wave 4. A two-part multivariable model examined the association between the first product tried and nicotine dependence, with part 1 modeling the presence (or absence) of any symptom of dependence and part 2 modeling the degree of dependence among those with any symptom of dependence. The first product tried was associated with sex, race, urbanicity, and parent education. First trying smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) was associated with a greater likelihood of multiple product use (vs. no use and vs. single product use). Regarding the degree of nicotine dependence (n = 713), first trying smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) was associated with higher nicotine dependence scores among those with any symptom of dependence. Youths who first try smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) may be at higher risk for future multiple product use and more symptoms nicotine dependence. Research should explore tailored interventions for smokeless tobacco users.

Use and Product Characteristics of "Tobacco Free Nicotine" E-Cigarettes Among Young Adults

INTRODUCTION

E-cigarettes are increasingly being marketed as containing tobacco-free nicotine (TFN). There is no data examining use of TFN e-cigarettes by young adults and how use may differ from non-TFN e-cigarettes. The current study aims to characterize young adult TFN e-cigarette use and examine differences between those who report using TFN and non-TFN e-cigarettes.

METHOD

U.S. young adults (18-25) with lifetime e-cigarette use (n = 927) were recruited via online panels in Fall 2021 and answered questions about TFN and non-TFN e-cigarettes. Participants were categorized by lifetime TFN e-cigarette use status (yes vs. no; 34% yes). Bivariate comparisons examined differences in e-cigarette characteristics (device type, flavors, nicotine concentration) between the TFN and non-TFN groups. Binary logistic regression models examined associations between lifetime frequency of vaping (<100 vs. ≥100 times), and other tobacco product, cannabis, and/or alcohol use and lifetime TFN e-cigarette use (yes vs. no). Adjusted models include age, race/ethnicity, vaping onset age, and sex.

RESULTS

In multivariable adjusted models, lifetime TFN e-cigarette use was associated with younger age, greater lifetime vaping, and nicotine pouch use. Young adults who used TFN e-cigarettes were more likely to report fruit, mint, menthol, and beverage flavors and know their e-liquid nicotine concentration compared with those who used non-TFN e-cigarettes.

CONCLUSION

Among young adults who have used e-cigarettes, more frequent e-cigarette use and use of nicotine pouches, which can also contain TFN, were associated with TFN e-cigarette use. Understanding behaviors and characteristics of those using TFN e-cigarettes is critical to regulation of TFN containing products.

IMPLICATIONS

This study characterizes young adults who report experience with tobacco free nicotine (TFN) e-cigarettes and compares them to those who have not used TFN e-cigarettes. Young adults with more frequent e-cigarette use and use of nicotine pouches are more likely to report TFN e-cigarette use.

"Tobacco-free" Nicotine Pouches: Risk Perceptions, Awareness, Susceptibility, and Use Among Young Adults in the United States

BACKGROUND

Nicotine pouches containing synthetic nicotine or tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) are available in the United States. Synthetic nicotine pouches are often marketed as "tobacco-free nicotine" (TFN), which may alter risk perceptions and product appeal. This study examined young adults' perceptions of TFN versus TDN pouches and the associations between product perceptions and TFN pouch awareness, susceptibility, and use, respectively.

AIMS AND METHODS

In total 630 young adults (18-25 years) completed an online Qualtrics panels survey in 2021. Participants were informed that TFN pouches contain synthetic nicotine as opposed to TDN. Participants reported on comparative risk perceptions for TFN versus TDN pouches and on TFN pouch awareness, susceptibility, and use. Unadjusted between-group comparisons and adjusted binary logistic regressions were run to examine relationships between product perceptions and TFN pouch awareness, susceptibility, and use.

RESULTS

Participants were aware of (37.3%), susceptible to (29.2%), or had used TFN pouches (3.8%). In unadjusted comparisons, TFN pouch awareness, susceptibility, and use were associated with disproportionately perceiving TFN pouches as less harmful or otherwise better than TDN pouches. In adjusted models, relationships between favorable perceptions and both TFN pouch awareness and susceptibility remained significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The descriptor "tobacco-free" may impact risk perceptions and the appeal of nicotine pouches among young adults. While no direct relationship was observed between TFN perceptions and TFN pouch use in the adjusted model, perceptions remained related to product awareness and susceptibility, which may be linked to future use. Continued surveillance is needed to fully determine how the term "tobacco-free" on product packaging and advertising impacts longitudinal public health outcomes.

IMPLICATIONS

Nicotine pouches originally contained TDN. Today, numerous brands of synthetic nicotine pouches, which are often marketed as "tobacco-free," are available on the market. We informed participants that "tobacco-free nicotine" pouches contain synthetic nicotine and examined comparative risk perceptions (i.e. tobacco-free vs. TDN pouches) and TFN pouch awareness, susceptibility, and use. Perceiving tobacco-free nicotine pouches as less harmful than tobacco-derived pouches was associated with product awareness, susceptibility, and use in unadjusted models and with awareness and susceptibility in adjusted models. Restricting the term "tobacco-free" may become necessary if the term inaccurately reduces product risk perceptions or increases product appeal.

Awareness, susceptibility, and use of oral nicotine pouches and comparative risk perceptions with smokeless tobacco among young adults in the United States

BACKGROUND

Oral nicotine pouches (NPs) that contain nicotine but no tobacco leaves are rapidly gaining popularity. However, there is limited research on NPs, including within priority populations. In the current study, we examined awareness of, susceptibility to, and use of NPs in young adults as well as comparative risk perceptions with smokeless tobacco.

METHODS

In 2021, 609 young adults (18-25 years) completed an online survey. Participants reported on NP awareness, susceptibility, and use as well as on comparative product perceptions for NPs versus smokeless tobacco. We ran unadjusted between-groups comparisons and an adjusted multinomial logistic regression to identify relationships between product perceptions and NP susceptibility and use.

RESULTS

41.5% of participants had heard of NPs before. Participants were non-susceptible (66.2%), susceptible (23.5%), or had used NPs (10.3%). Comparative product perceptions between NPs and smokeless tobacco suggested that young adults, as a whole, expressed uncertainty about the relative risk/benefit of using NPs versus smokeless tobacco. However, as expected, unadjusted and adjusted findings indicated that favorable perceptions of NPs versus smokeless tobacco were disproportionately observed among susceptible participants and NP users compared to non-susceptible individuals. Demographic differences were also observed (e.g., NP users were more likely than non-susceptible and susceptible individuals to have used smokeless tobacco).

CONCLUSIONS

Young adults reported awareness of, susceptibility to, and use of NPs, with findings indicating that favorable perceptions of NPs versus smokeless tobacco may contribute to NP susceptibility and use beyond known correlates like smokeless tobacco use. However, further research is needed to understand the full range of factors that are associated with NP susceptibility and use. It will be important to disentangle factors that are associated with potential positive public health impacts (e.g., switching from smokeless tobacco to exclusive NP use) from those associated with negative public health impacts (e.g., initiation among nicotine naïve individuals).

Relating individual differences in the reinforcing value of smoking and dependence severity to nicotine exposure levels in vulnerable populations

Cigarette smoking is overrepresented in populations with psychiatric conditions and socioeconomic disadvantage. Greater understanding of the role of reinforcement and nicotine dependence in smoking among vulnerable populations may facilitate development of better targeted interventions to reduce smoking. Prior research demonstrated that individual differences in the reinforcing value of smoking and nicotine-dependence severity predicted total nicotine-exposure in vulnerable populations. The present study uses multivariate regression to address two aims: (1) Quantify the degree to which the reinforcing value of smoking, assessed using the Cigarette Purchase Task (CPT), and dependence severity assessed using the Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence and Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (B-WISDM) each account for individual differences in cotinine-plus-3'-hydroxycotinine (COT+3HC) levels. (2) Explore whether there is overlap in the variance accounted for by the CTP, FTND, and B-WISDM. Participants were 628 adults with co-morbid psychiatric conditions or socioeconomic disadvantage who smoked daily. The CPT, FTND, and B-WISDM models accounted for 23.76%, 32.45%, and 29.61% of the variance in COT+3HC levels, respectively. Adding CPT to the FTND model failed to increase the variance accounted for and adding it to the B-WISDM model did so by only 1.2% demonstrating considerable overlap in the variance in nicotine exposure levels accounted for by these three instruments. These results provide new knowledge on the relationship between individual differences in the reinforcing value of smoking and nicotine-exposure levels and suggest differences in reinforcing value may underpin a considerable portion of the variance in nicotine exposure accounted for by dependence severity.

Curiosity, use, and perceptions of "tobacco-free nicotine" E-cigarettes among U.S. young adults

This study determined whether young adults perceptions of how tobacco free nicotine (TFN) compared to tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) were associated with curiosity to try or use TFN e-cigarettes. U.S. young adults aged 18-25 years (n = 1176) completed an online survey in October 2021. Survey questions assessed TFN awareness, curiosity, use, and perceptions of how flavor, taste, ease of access, cost, and harm compared between TFN and TDN. Participants were categorized into 3 groups: not curious to try TFN (n = 511, 43.5%), curious to try TFN (n = 348, 29.6%), and ever used TFN (n = 317, 27%). Multinomial logistic regression measured associations between perceptions and TFN curiosity and use (vs. not curious to try), with total number tobacco products used and demographics as covariates. Compared to young adults who were not curious to try TFN e-cigarettes, those who were curious perceived TFN as less addictive than TDN (aOR = 2.27; 95% CI =1.34-3.86). Those who had used TFN e-cigarettes perceived TFN as having flavors that tasted better (aOR = 1.80; 95% CI = 1.63-1.99), "smoother" (aOR = 1.88; 95% CI =1.18-2.99), and less like tobacco (aOR 1.94; 95% CI 1.23-3.05). Adjusted models did not show differences in perceptions between those who had tried TFN and those who were curious to try TFN. Young adults who were curious to try or had used TFN had more positive perceptions of TFN. As it is currently unclear whether synthetic nicotine carries the same health risks as TDN, ongoing surveillance of TFN uptake among young adults is warranted.

Association of youth impulsivity and use of e-cigarette devices, flavors, and frequency of use

INTRODUCTION

Given high youth e-cigarette use, it is important to investigate how traits, like impulsivity, may be associated with youth e-cigarette use behaviors. The study aim is to determine if impulsivity is associated with trying more e-cigarette flavors and device types, and greater frequency of e-cigarette use.

METHOD

Cross sectional survey data from CT high schoolers (n = 4875, 6 schools) were collected in 2019. Lifetime (ever) e-cigarette users (n = 2313) completed the Brief Barrett Impulsivity Scale, which contains two subscales; behavioral impulsivity and impaired self-control. Among lifetime users, associations between impulsivity subscales and number of e-cigarette flavors tried, e-cigarette devices tried, and past 30-day frequency of e-cigarette use were examined using regression models. Additionally, associations of impulsivity and use frequency were examined among only current e-cigarette users (≥1 day of use in past 30; n = 1327). School, age, race/ethnicity, vaping initiation age, other tobacco product use, and sex were included as covariates in models.

RESULTS

Higher behavioral impulsivity was associated with greater number of e-cigarette flavors tried (AOR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.11, p <.008) and higher frequency of past 30-day use both among ever and current e-cigarette users (AOR: 1.26, 95%CI:1.10,1.44, p <.001; AOR: 1.12, 95%CI:1.02,1.22, p <.02), but not number of e-cigarette devices tried. Impaired self-control was not associated with any outcomes.

CONCLUSION

Youth with higher behavioral impulsivity may be more at risk for using more e-cigarette flavors and using e-cigarettes more frequently. Regulations aimed at reducing flavor availability among youth and interventions targeting impulsive behavior may be important for this population.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Does it come from tobacco? Young adults' interpretations of the term "tobacco-free nicotine" in a cross-sectional national survey sample

BACKGROUND

"Tobacco-free" nicotine (TFN) e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches containing synthetic nicotine are increasingly available. The term TFN may lead to reduced risk perceptions and increased use intentions relative to tobacco-derived nicotine products. Effectively communicating messages about TFN may depend on the public's ability to differentiate TFN from tobacco-derived nicotine. Our goals were to examine knowledge about the source(s) of nicotine in commonly used products and beliefs about what TFN means.

METHODS

In 2021 we surveyed 2464 young adults (18-25 years) online. Participants reported whether cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, and nicotine pouches contain nicotine that comes from tobacco (always, sometimes, never). Correct responses were "always" for cigarettes/smokeless and "sometimes" for e-cigarettes/pouches. Participants also reported "what [they] think TFN e-cigarettes/vapes contain" (nicotine only; tobacco only; both nicotine and tobacco; neither nicotine nor tobacco). We ran unadjusted and adjusted models examining correct responses for nicotine source and TFN contents by past-month product use status (cigarettes, smokeless, e-cigarettes, pouches).

RESULTS

Rates of correctly identifying nicotine source were modest (23.6% pouches-61.9% cigarettes). Except smokeless tobacco, using a given product was associated with identifying its nicotine source correctly in unadjusted models. Participants reported "TFN" means a product contains nicotine only (57.8%), tobacco only (10.8%), both (14.1%), or neither (17.1%).

CONCLUSIONS

There is confusion about the source of nicotine in products, and many young adults incorrectly interpreted TFN to mean something other than containing nicotine but no tobacco. Regulatory efforts may be needed to restrict using the term "tobacco-free nicotine" on product labeling and advertising.

Cannabis use among youth who vape nicotine E-cigarettes: A qualitative analysis

BACKGROUND

Nicotine vaping and cannabis use are common among youth. Among youth who use e-cigarettes, little is known about how and why they use cannabis and patterns of cannabis and nicotine co-use. Given the popularity of both products among youth, the study aim is to utilize qualitative data to better understand cannabis use among youth who use e-cigarettes.

METHOD

Six focus groups of high schoolers who reported past-month e-cigarette use (N = 50; 52% male) were conducted to inform e-cigarette cessation programming. We conducted secondary data analysis examining report of cannabis use during focus groups. Transcripts were examined for report of cannabis use, reasons for use, and nicotine and cannabis co-use.

RESULTS

In focus groups, cannabis was commonly discussed. Youth reported vaping cannabis, however other forms of cannabis delivery were common (e.g. blunts, joints). Themes related to reasons for simultaneous use of nicotine and cannabis were to experience stronger psychoactive effects than using either product alone and needing to use less nicotine product overall. Reasons for liking cannabis were positive psychoactive effects and stress relief. Reasons for disliking were related to health concerns. Notably, when youth reported disliking cannabis due to health concerns, a common discussion was strategies to acquire and continue cannabis use in ways that they perceived mitigated health concerns.

CONCLUSION

Qualitative evidence identified associations between e-cigarette use and cannabis use among youth. Research and interventions targeting youth using e-cigarettes should consider how to address dual use of these products.

Effects of Reduced Nicotine Content Cigarettes on Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide and Self-Reported Respiratory Health Outcomes Among Smokers With Psychiatric Conditions or Socioeconomic Disadvantage

INTRODUCTION

This study examined whether exposure to reduced-nicotine-content cigarettes (RNCCs) for 12 weeks alters respiratory health using Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO), a validated biomarker of respiratory epithelial health, and the Respiratory Health Questionnaire (RHQ), a subject-rated questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. Participants were 747 adult daily smokers enrolled in three double-blind, randomized clinical trials evaluating effects of cigarette nicotine content (0.4, 2.4, 15.8 mg nicotine/g tobacco) in people with affective disorders, opioid use disorder (OUD), or socioeconomic disadvantage.

AIMS AND METHODS

FeNO levels and RHQ ratings were collected at baseline and Weeks 6 and 12 following randomization. Multiple regression was used to assess associations of FeNO and RHQ with smoking characteristics. Mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the effects of nicotine content on FeNO and RHQ outcomes over the 12-week study period.

RESULTS

FeNO levels but not RHQ ratings varied inversely with smoking characteristics at baseline (Ps < 0.0001) in smokers with affective disorders and socioeconomic disadvantage but less so in those with OUD. Participants with affective disorders and socioeconomic disadvantage, but not those with OUD, who were assigned to RNCCs had higher FeNO levels at Week 12 than those assigned to the 15.8 mg/g dose [F(2,423) = 4.51, p = .01, Cohen's d = 0.21]. No significant dose-related changes in RHQ scores were identified.

CONCLUSIONS

Use of RNCCs across a 12-week period attenuates smoking-related reductions in FeNO levels in smokers with affective disorders and socioeconomic disadvantage although not those with OUD. FeNO changes were not accompanied by changes in respiratory-health ratings.

TRIAL REGISTRATION

Inclusion and exclusion criteria for the sample and experimental manipulation of the nicotine content of assigned cigarettes are registered: NCT02232737, NCT02250664, NCT02250534. The FeNO measure reported in this manuscript is an exploratory outcome that was not registered.

IMPLICATIONS

Should a reduced nicotine content standard be implemented; these results suggest that reduced nicotine content in cigarettes will not exacerbate and instead may attenuate smoking-related decreases in FeNO. This is significant as NO is an important component in maintaining a healthy respiratory system and necessary to defend against infection. Furthermore, the results of the current study demonstrate that the adoption of the reduced nicotine content standard may result in beneficial impacts on respiratory epithelial health among vulnerable populations that are disproportionally affected by the adverse health outcomes precipitated by combustible tobacco use.

Search for Lepton-Flavor Violation in Z-Boson Decays with τ Leptons with the ATLAS Detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays. The Z→ℓτ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to B(Z→eτ)<7.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<7.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: B(Z→eτ)<5.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<6.5×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level.

Psychometric evaluation of the Short-Form Vaping Consequences Questionnaire for use with high school adolescents who use and do not use e-cigarettes

BACKGROUND

Assessing youth vaping expectancies using a psychometrically sound measure can improve understanding of e-cigarette susceptibility and use.

METHODS

We evaluated the psychometric properties of the Short-Form Vaping Consequences Questionnaire (SF-VCQ), an expectancy measure previously validated with adults, within a sample of 1,753 high school adolescents who completed an online, school-based survey in Fall 2020 (51.6% female; 15.56[1.22] years old; 46.6% non-Hispanic white; 26.9% reported lifetime but no past-30-day vaping; 12.6% reported past-30-day vaping). Analyses included confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, measurement invariance, between-group differences, and test-criterion relationships.

RESULTS

The 4-factor structure was confirmed and was scalar invariant by lifetime and past-month vaping status, sex, and race. All subscales were internally reliable (mean α=0.94). The subscales were sensitive to differences based on sex, race, vaping susceptibility among never users, and lifetime and past-month vaping status. For example, students who vaped in the past-month held weaker expectancies for negative consequences but stronger expectancies for positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and appetite/weight control compared to lifetime vapers. Unadjusted relationships within the subsamples of lifetime and past-month vapers provided evidence of convergent validity. Evidence for concurrent validity was observed for all samples after accounting for covariates. For example, expectancies for positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and appetite/weight control remained significantly associated with past-month vaping frequency.

CONCLUSIONS

The SF-VCQ evidenced excellent internal reliability, scalar measurement invariance, and construct, convergent, and concurrent validity in samples of never, lifetime, and past-month adolescent e-cigarette users. Findings support using the SF-VCQ for assessing youths' vaping-related expectancies.

IMPLICATIONS

The current study established the psychometric properties of the SF-VCQ for use among adolescents with and without vaping experience, including measurement invariance that permits direct comparisons of expectancies across these two groups. When considered in concert with previously published research in adults, the SF-VCQ provides researchers with a measure that can be used with both youth and adult samples. Observed relationships between positive expectancies and vaping susceptibility in vaping naïve youth and indices of vaping frequency in youth with vaping experience suggest that challenging positive expectancies may be a valuable addition to prevention and intervention efforts to reduce youth vaping.

Cumulative vulnerabilities as a potential moderator of response to reduced nicotine content cigarettes

Risk for smoking increases in a summative manner corresponding to the number of co-occurring vulnerabilities present (cumulative vulnerability). We examined whether cumulative vulnerabilities moderate response to reduced nicotine content cigarettes in a secondary analysis of results from 775 participants in three 12-week randomized clinical trials examining research cigarettes varying in nicotine content (0.4, 2.4, 15.8 mg nicotine/g tobacco). Participants were categorized as having 0-1, 2-3, or ≥ 4 cumulative vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities included: rural residence, current substance use disorder, current affective disorder, low educational attainment, poverty, unemployment, physical disability. The primary outcome was total cigarettes per day (CPD) during Week 12; secondary outcomes included CPD across weeks, toxin exposure, dependence severity, craving/withdrawal (17 dependent measures). Results were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of covariance and growth-curve modeling. Total CPD during Week 12 increased as cumulative-vulnerability increased (P = 0.004), and decreased as nicotine content decreased (P < 0.001), with no significant interaction of cumulative vulnerability and dose (P = 0.67). Effects on other outcomes generally followed that same pattern. The only exception across the other outcomes was on Questionnaire-on-Smoking-Urges Factor-2 ratings for usual-brand cigarettes where cumulative vulnerability, dose, and time interacted (P = 0.007), with craving at the 0.4 and 2.4 mg/g doses decreasing over time, but inconsistently across vulnerability categories. Overall, we saw little evidence that cumulative vulnerabilities moderate response to reduced nicotine content cigarettes suggesting that a policy reducing nicotine content in cigarettes to minimally addictive levels could benefit even highly vulnerable smokers including those residing in rural or other regions with overrepresentation of co-occurring vulnerabilities. Demographic and substance use-related differences among high school adolescents who vape cannabis versus use other cannabis modalities

BACKGROUND

Vaping is the second most common modality of using cannabis following smoking. We examined differences in demographics and substance use behaviors between adolescent cannabis vapers and those exclusively using other cannabis modalities.

METHODS

In 2019, 4875 students from six Connecticut high schools completed school-wide, online surveys. Past-month cannabis users (n = 931; 52.8% female, 16.38(1.27) years old, 44.9% non-Hispanic White) reported on cannabis modalities used (e.g., combustible, vaporizable, edible) and were classified as cannabis vapers or non-vapers. Cannabis vapers reported on device type used to vape cannabis: a cannabis-specific device or modified/hacked e-cigarette. Unadjusted and adjusted relationships were examined to identify demographic and substance-related differences between cannabis vapers and non-vapers.

RESULTS

56.3% of past-month cannabis users reported vaping cannabis. Cannabis vapers reported using both cannabis-specific vaporizers (91.9%) and modifying/hacking e-cigarettes (23.7%). Cannabis vapers, relative to other cannabis users, were more likely to be male, White, initiate cannabis use at a younger age; endorse past-month use of all cannabis modalities, alcohol, and e-cigarettes; and report smoking and dabbing cannabis more frequently; consuming more drinks per drinking day; and using e-cigarettes at a younger age and more frequently.

CONCLUSIONS

Relative to other cannabis modalities, vaping was associated with increased use of several cannabis products and other substances. Adolescent past-month cannabis users reported modifying e-cigarettes to vape cannabis. Findings suggest that regulations should be implemented to prevent e-cigarettes from being modifiable for use with cannabis and highlight the importance of assessing different cannabis use modalities, as vaping was associated with distinct substance-related risks.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b-Tagged Jets at sqrt[s]=13 TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no b-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. Inspired by the B-meson decay anomalies, a four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks (b, s) and two leptons (ee or μμ) is used as a benchmark signal model, which is characterized by the energy scale and coupling, Λ and g_{*}, respectively. Contact interactions with Λ/g_{*} lower than 2.0 (2.4) TeV are excluded for electrons (muons) at the 95% confidence level, still far below the value that is favored by the B-meson decay anomalies. Model-independent limits are set as a function of the minimum dilepton invariant mass, which allow the results to be reinterpreted in various signal scenarios.

Search for Displaced Leptons in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for charged leptons with large impact parameters using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented, addressing a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. Results are consistent with the background prediction. This search provides unique sensitivity to long-lived scalar supersymmetric lepton partners (sleptons). For lifetimes of 0.1 ns, selectron, smuon, and stau masses up to 720, 680, and 340  GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, drastically improving on the previous best limits from LEP.

Differences in JUUL Appeal Among Past and Current Youth JUUL Users

INTRODUCTION

JUUL, a closed system e-cigarette with disposable pods, is popular among youth, with positive attributes of this product linked to current use by youth. However, many youth try JUUL and do not continue using; understanding differences in the appeal of this device between current users and those who chose not to continue use can inform regulation and prevention efforts. The aim of the current study is to compare JUUL appeal in youth among past users (ie, used, but not in past month) and current users (ie, used in past month).

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in four Connecticut high schools in Spring 2018. This survey assessed JUUL use and reasons for liking/disliking JUUL, including its' pharmacological effects (eg, nicotine "buzz"), product characteristics (eg, flavors), peer influence, appeal compared to other e-cigarettes, and concealability. Logistic regressions were conducted to examine differences in liking/disliking JUUL by use status (past vs. current).

RESULTS

Among JUUL users (N = 1374; 43% of total sample), 30.4% were past users and 69.6% were current users. Compared to current users, past users were less likely to like JUUL for positive pharmacological effects (eg, nicotine "buzz"), product characteristics (eg, flavors), and peer use and more likely to dislike JUUL for the adverse pharmacological effects (eg, headache), product characteristics (eg, flavors), and for "other" reasons (open-ended response; eg, perceived harm).

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that altering JUUL appeal through regulating nicotine content and flavors may be key in policy aimed at shifting youth to become past JUUL users.

IMPLICATIONS

This study investigates how current and past youth JUUL users differ in their report of the appeal of JUUL. Past users are less likely to report experiencing positive pharmacological effects and product characteristics of JUUL and are less likely to report appeal due to peer use. Understanding how appeal of JUUL may differ among past and current users can aid in our understanding of how to regulate these products so that they are less appealing to current youth users.

Longitudinal Flow Decorrelations in Xe+Xe Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe+Xe collisions is found to be larger for v_{2}, but smaller for v_{3}. Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v_{n} measured in Xe+Xe collisions to those in Pb+Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson Decaying into W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ in Fully Hadronic Final States from sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions Recorded with the ATLAS Detector

Several extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. An uncharted signature of dark matter particles produced in association with VV=W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ pairs from a decay of a dark Higgs boson s is searched for using 139  fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The s→V(qq[over ¯])V(qq[over ¯]) decays are reconstructed with a novel technique aimed at resolving the dense topology from boosted VV pairs using jets in the calorimeter and tracking information. Dark Higgs scenarios with m_{s}>160  GeV are excluded.

Informing the development of adolescent e-cigarette cessation interventions: A qualitative study

INTRODUCTION

Adolescents are using e-cigarettes at high rates and there is limited information on how to help them quit. We aimed to inform e-cigarette cessation interventions by understanding why adolescents use and dislike e-cigarettes and their quit experiences.

METHODS

Six focus groups with current users (i.e., past-month use) and 2 focus groups with past users (i.e., no past-month use) were conducted in Fall 2019 in Connecticut (N = 62). We used a focus group guide and an iterative approach to identify themes.

RESULTS

Adolescents used e-cigarettes because of social reasons and to relieve stress and reported disliking e-cigarettes due to the cost, negative health effects, and addiction. They reported both intentional and unintentional experiences with quitting e-cigarettes. Reasons for unintentional quitting included lack of access to e-cigarettes. Reasons for intentional quitting included short-term "tolerance breaks" and health concerns. Of those who tried to quit, common quitting methods were "cold turkey," giving away their device, and limiting interactions with peer users. The most common withdrawal symptom was negative mood. Notable barriers to quitting included exposure to social influences at school, easy access to e-cigarettes, and lack of motivation to quit.

DISCUSSION

Our qualitative evidence suggests that e-cigarette cessation interventions need to motivate youth to quit, and teach them to manage social influences, stress and other negative mood, and withdrawal symptoms. Interventions that address social norms related to use of e-cigarettes in school and reduce cues related to e-cigarette use may also be beneficial.

Medium-Induced Modification of Z-Tagged Charged Particle Yields in Pb+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p_{T}) is measured in 260  pb^{-1} of pp and 1.7  nb^{-1} of Pb+Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p_{T} in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p_{T}. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p_{T} regime difficult to measure through other channels.

Trends in various e-cigarette devices used by high school adolescents from 2017-2019

BACKGROUND

Adolescent e-cigarette use has increased recently; however, little is known about trends in use of specific devices by youth. This study aims to 1) compare rates of e-cigarette device use over time, 2) examine changes in frequency of device use, and 3) identify predictors of device use.

METHODS

Cross-sectional surveys were distributed school-wide across 4 diverse Connecticut high-schools in 2017, 2018, 2019 and assessed current (i.e., past-30-day) use of various e-cigarette devices: disposables/cig-a-likes, vape pens, mods, JUULs, and other rechargeable pod devices (added in 2018 and 2019). Analyses compared rates of device use and frequency (i.e., number of days used in past 30) over time. Multivariable logistic regression models examined demographic and tobacco use characteristics (e.g., age first trying e-cigarettes) as predictors of current use of each device type in 2019.

RESULTS

From 2017-2019, rates of using JUUL, disposables/cig-a-likes, and vape pens increased significantly, while use of mods and other pod devices decreased (ps<.001). Over 59 % of youth reported using more than one e-cigarette device in 2019. Over time, more youth were frequent users (using ≥20 out of 30 days) of disposable/cig-a-likes (32 % to >46 %) and JUUL (28 % to >35 %) devices. In multivariable models, first trying e-cigarettes at a younger age was associated with current use of disposable/cig-a-like, vape pens, mods, and other rechargeable pod devices.

CONCLUSIONS

From 2017-2019, JUUL, disposable/cig-a-like, and vape pens increased in popularity and were used frequently. Tobacco regulations designed to reduce youth use should consider various device types.

First tobacco product tried among adolescents based on race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status

In recent years, the tobacco use landscape among youth has changed greatly, underscoring a need to understand current tobacco product initiation patterns. This study aimed to examine if adolescents' first tobacco product tried differs by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES). Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 6 Connecticut high schools in Spring 2019 (N = 4875). The analytic sample comprised ever users of tobacco products who reported on the first tobacco product they tried (N = 2530; 53.6% female). Of ever tobacco product users, 64.6% reported that their first tobacco product tried was an e-cigarette, 24.4% reported blunts, 6.5% reported another tobacco product, and 4.5% reported cigarettes. A multinomial logistic regression model examined race/ethnicity and SES as predictors of the first tobacco product tried with cigarettes as the reference group. Compared to Non-Hispanic (NH) White students, NH Black students (OR = 0.38, 95%CI = 0.17-0.82), Hispanic students (OR = 0.44, 95%CI = 0.27-0.71), and students of other NH races (OR = 0.30, 95%CI = 0.18-0.52) were less likely to report initiating tobacco product use with e-cigarettes. Additionally, compared to NH White students, NH Black students were more likely to report using blunts as their first tobacco product (OR = 3.01, 95%CI = 1.38-6.56). Compared to low SES, middle SES (OR = 1.62, 95%CI = 1.04-2.52) was associated with greater odds of reporting e-cigarettes as the first tobacco product. These findings suggest that youth of different backgrounds initiate tobacco use with different tobacco products and tailored prevention strategies are needed.

Cooling e-cigarette flavors and the association with e-cigarette use among a sample of high school students

INTRODUCTION

E-liquid flavor is typically presented by flavor category (e.g. menthol, mint, fruit, dessert). Cooling sensations produced by flavor additives such as menthol enhance appeal of e-cigarettes among youth, but not all e-liquids that produce cooling sensations are labeled as menthol. Sensory experiences produced by flavors may allow for a new way to capture e-cigarette flavor use. This study aims to examine use of flavors that produce cooling sensations among youth and its association with e-cigarette use behaviors.

METHODS

A 2019 survey of high school students (n = 4875) examined use of e-cigarette flavors that produced cooling sensations (cooling flavors) among past 30-day e-cigarette users. E-cigarette use behaviors (flavor use, nicotine use, frequency of use) were examined between those who did and did not use cooling flavors. A binary logistic regression was used to examine associations between vaping frequency, nicotine (vs. non-nicotine) use, and vaping cooling flavors while controlling for demographics, number of flavors vaped in the past month, and vaping age of onset.

RESULTS

51.6% (n = 473/916) of the analytic sample endorsed vaping cooling flavors. There were no demographic differences by vaping cooling flavors. Vaping cooling flavors was associated with vaping more frequently (AOR:1.04,95% CI:1.03,1.05) and vaping nicotine (AOR:2.37,95% CI:1.53,3.67).

CONCLUSION

Vaping cooling flavors was associated with greater nicotine vaping and frequency of e-cigarette use. Assessing sensory experience, such as cooling, in addition to flavor category may more fully capture e-cigarette flavor use and its impacts on youth e-cigarette use behaviors.

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (e^{+}e^{-}+p or μ^{+}μ^{-}+p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6  fb^{-1}. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee+p (μμ+p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced for cross-section measurements in the fiducial detector acceptance, corresponding to σ_{ee+p}=11.0±2.6(stat)±1.2(syst)±0.3(lumi) and σ_{μμ+p}=7.2±1.6(stat)±0.9(syst)±0.2(lumi)  fb in the dielectron and dimuon channel, respectively.

Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H→bb[over ¯]) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level.

High school students' use of JUUL pod flavors before and after JUUL implemented voluntary sales restrictions on certain flavors in 2018

Objectives

In November 2018, JUUL, Inc. restricted sales of mango, fruit medley, crème brûlée, and cucumber pods to its website. Physical/online sales of tobacco, menthol, and mint pods continued. We examined rates of adolescent JUUL device and flavored pod use before and after restrictions were implemented to examine their potential impact.

Methods

Students from 4 Connecticut high schools completed cross-sectional surveys in 2018 (N = 3170) and 2019 (N = 3074).

Results

Compared to 2018, current (past-month) JUUL use decreased in 2019 (30.2–25.6%). Among current JUUL users, restricted flavor use (mango [62.8–36.9%]; cucumber [27.7–11.9%]; fruit [23.5–11.4%]; crème brûlée [12.3–5.0%]) and the total number of flavors used (2.09[SD = 1.71]-1.51[SD = 1.33]) decreased (p-values < .001), while mint pod use increased (62.0–68.6%, p < .01). Tobacco and menthol pod use remained stable.

Conclusions

Following voluntary sales restrictions implemented by JUUL, Inc., restricted flavor use and the total number of flavors used decreased among JUUL users while mint use increased. Results suggest flavor restrictions may impact adolescents’ e-cigarette use. While 2020 Food and Drug Administration restrictions on mint pods may further limit youth JUUL use, research is needed to determine where youth acquire restricted flavors and if restrictions prompt increased popularity of unrestricted devices/e-liquids.

Investigating tobacco withdrawal in response to reduced nicotine cigarettes among smokers with opioid use disorder and other vulnerabilities

Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) have high prevalence of smoking and poor cessation outcomes. Data suggest that smokers with OUD may experience heightened nicotine reinforcement and more severe tobacco withdrawal compared to smokers without OUD. The Food and Drug Administration is currently considering reducing the nicotine content of cigarettes to reduce smoking prevalence and smoking-related disease. It is critical to understand the effects of reduced nicotine content cigarettes (RNCCs) on tobacco withdrawal in this subgroup. In this secondary analysis, we investigated the ability of RNCCs to attenuate acute tobacco withdrawal and craving severity in smokers with OUD versus those without substance use disorders (SUDs). Smokers maintained on methadone or buprenorphine (opioid-maintained [OM]; n = 65) versus without other SUDs (i.e., non-SUD; n = 135) completed 5 laboratory sessions wherein they smoked their usual brand (UB) or a research cigarette varying in nicotine content (0.4, 2.4, 5.2, 15.8 mg/g of tobacco) under double-blind, acute abstinence conditions. Participants completed the Minnesota Tobacco Withdrawal Scale, including a desire to smoke (craving) item, before and every 15 min for 1 hr following smoking each cigarette. Tobacco withdrawal and craving did not differ significantly by OM status in response to UB or RNCCs. In addition to the Dose × Time interaction, greater depression and cigarette dependence consistently predicted withdrawal and craving (ps < .05). Across all cigarettes, tobacco withdrawal and craving did not significantly differ by OM status, suggesting that smokers receiving opioid agonist treatment may respond favorably to RNCCs. Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector

A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a pp collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1} collected at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17-340 pb (16_{-5}^{+6}-320_{-90}^{+130}  pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb (100_{-30}^{+40} and 100_{-30}^{+40}  pb) for the η_{c} and J/ψ hypotheses, respectively.

E-cigarette devices used on school grounds

INTRODUCTION

Preliminary evidence suggests adolescents use e-cigarettes in school. However, little is known about the types of devices that are used in schools, where they are used, and who uses them. Knowledge about these issues is critical to inform school regulations.

METHODS

Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 6 Connecticut high schools in 2019. Adolescents reported on current use (past 30-day use) of the following e-cigarette devices inschool: JUUL, any pod system other than JUUL, vape pens, disposables, mods, and on deviceuse in different locations: class, bathroom, hallways, outside on school grounds, and other school locations. Separate binary logistic regressions investigated predictors of use (demographics and past month use frequency of each device) in school for each device.

RESULTS

Overall, 45.0% of current users (N = 1447) used e-cigarettes at school. Among users of each device, prevalence of current use at school varied by device with 45.7% reporting JUUL use, 41.3% other pod use, 34.6% vape pen use, 38.3% disposables use and 27.3% mod use. Current users used devices in bathrooms (75.1%), followed by outside on school grounds (52.2%), classrooms (45.7%), hallways (38.8%) and other school locations (11.7%). Greater e-cigarette past month use frequency for each device was associated with device use in school.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is the first to examine use of specific e-cigarette devices in schools and demonstrates that e-cigarette use frequency predicts school use. Despite rules against vaping, e-cigarette use remains prevalent in many school locations, suggesting alternative strategies such as prevention and e-cigarette education are needed.

Comparing participant estimated demand intensity on the cigarette Purchase Task to consumption when usual-brand cigarettes were provided free

Accumulating evidence suggests that the hypothetical Cigarette Purchase Task (CPT), especially its demand Intensity index (i.e., estimated cigarettes participants would smoke if free), is associated with individual differences in smoking risk. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the extent to which hypothetical CPT demand Intensity may differ from consumption when participants are provided with free cigarettes. That topic is the overarching focus of the present study. Participants were 745 adult smokers with co-morbid psychiatric conditions or socioeconomic disadvantage. CPT was administered for usual-brand cigarettes prior to providing participants with seven days of their usual-brand cigarettes free of cost and consumption was recorded daily via an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System. Demand Intensity was correlated with IVR smoking rate (rs 0.670-0.696, ps < 0.001) but estimates consistently exceeded IVR smoking rates by an average of 4.4 cigarettes per day (ps < 0.001). Importantly, both measures were comparably sensitive to discerning well-established differences in smoking risk, including greater cigarettes per day among men versus women (F(1,732) = 18.74, p < 0.001), those with versus without opioid-dependence (F(1,732) = 168.37, p < 0.001), younger versus older adults (F(2,730) = 32.93, p < 0.001), and those with lower versus greater educational attainment (F(1,732) = 38.26, p < 0.001). Overall, CPT demand Intensity appears to overestimate consumption rates relative to those observed when participants are provided with free cigarettes, but those deviations are systematic (i.e., consistent in magnitude and direction, Fs all <1.63; ps > 0.19 for all interactions with subgroups). This suggests that demand Intensity was sensitive to established group differences in smoking rate, supporting its utility as an important measure of addiction potential.

Changes in Cigarette Consumption With Reduced Nicotine Content Cigarettes Among Smokers With Psychiatric Conditions or Socioeconomic Disadvantage: 3 Randomized Clinical Trials

IMPORTANCE

This study is part of a programmatic effort evaluating the effects of reducing nicotine content of cigarettes to minimally addictive levels.

OBJECTIVE

To examine whether very low-nicotine-content (VLNC) cigarettes decrease smoking rates and dependence severity among smokers with psychiatric disorders or socioeconomic disadvantage.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

These 3 randomized clinical trials were performed at the University of Vermont, Brown University, and Johns Hopkins University between October 2016 and September 2019. Participants received 12 weeks of exposure to study cigarettes with nicotine content ranging from levels representative of commercial cigarettes (15.8 mg nicotine/g tobacco) to less than a hypothesized addiction threshold (2.4 mg/g and 0.4 mg/g). Daily smokers from 3 at-risk populations participated: individuals with affective disorders, exemplifying smokers with mental illness; individuals with opioid use disorder, exemplifying smokers with substance use disorders; and women with high school educations or less, exemplifying smokers with socioeconomic disadvantage. Data were analyzed from September 2019 to July 2020.

INTERVENTIONS

Random assignment to 1 of 3 study cigarettes provided weekly at no cost for 12 weeks.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

The primary outcome was between-group differences in mean total cigarettes smoked daily (CPD) during week 12; secondary outcomes included CPD for study and nonstudy cigarettes and dependence severity across weeks analyzed using analysis of covariance, random coefficients growth modeling, or repeated measures analysis of variance.

RESULTS

A total of 775 participants were included (mean [SD] age, 35.59 [11.05] years; 551 [71.10%] women [owing to 1 population being exclusively women]); participants smoked a mean (SD) of 17.79 (9.18) CPD at study intake. A total of 286 participants were randomized to 0.4 mg/g, 235 participants were randomized to 2.4 mg/g, and 254 participants were randomized to 15.8 mg/g. Participants randomized to VLNC cigarettes had decreased mean [SEM] total CPD during week 12 across populations (Cohen d = 0.61; P < .001). At week 12, mean (SEM) CPD decreased to 17.96 (0.98) CPD in the 0.4 mg/g group and to 19.53 (1.07) CPD in the 2.4 mg/g group, both of which were significantly different from the 15.8 mg/g group (25.08 [1.08] CPD at week 12) but not each other (0.4 mg/g adjusted mean difference: -7.54 [95%CI, -9.51 to -5.57]; 2.4 mg/g adjusted mean difference: -5.34 [95% CI, 7.41 to -3.26]). Several secondary outcomes differed across populations randomized to VLNCs, including mean total CPD across weeks, with linear trends lower in participants receiving 0.4 mg/g (-0.28 [95%CI, -0.39 to -0.18]; P < .001) and 2.4 mg/g (-0.13 [95%CI, -0.25 to -0.01]; P < .001) doses compared with those receiving the 15.8 mg/g dose (0.30 [95% CI, 0.19 to 0.41]). Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence mean total scores were significantly lower in participants who received VLNCs (Cohen d = 0.12; P < .001), with those who received the 0.4 mg/g dose (mean [SD] score, 3.99 [0.06]; P < .001 vs 15.8 mg/g) or 2.4 mg/g dose (mean [SD] score, 4.07 [0.06]; P = .01 vs 15.8 mg/g) differing from those who received the 15.8 mg/g dose (mean [SD] score, 4.31 [0.06]) but not from each other.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

These findings demonstrate that decreasing the nicotine content of cigarettes to very low levels reduced smoking rate and nicotine-dependence severity in these high-risk populations, effects that may facilitate successful cessation.

Dijet Resonance Search with Weak Supervision Using sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions in the ATLAS Detector

This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search A→BC, for m_{A}∼O(TeV), m_{B},m_{C}∼O(100  GeV) and B, C are reconstructed as large-radius jets, without paying a penalty associated with a large trials factor in the scan of the masses of the two jets. The full run 2 sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision dataset of 139  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used for the search. There is no significant evidence of a localized excess in the dijet invariant mass spectrum between 1.8 and 8.2 TeV. Cross-section limits for narrow-width A, B, and C particles vary with m_{A}, m_{B}, and m_{C}. For example, when m_{A}=3  TeV and m_{B}≳200  GeV, a production cross section between 1 and 5 fb is excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on m_{C}. For certain masses, these limits are up to 10 times more sensitive than those obtained by the inclusive dijet search. These results are complementary to the dedicated searches for the case that B and C are standard model bosons.
