Abstract
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a synthetic anionic surfactant that is found in certain amounts in wastewaters and even in water bodies, despite its known biodegradability. This study aimed to assess the influence of nitrate, sulphate, and iron (III) on LAS anaerobic degradation and biomass microbial diversity. Batch reactors were inoculated with anaerobic biomass, nutrients, LAS (20 mg L-1), one of the three electron acceptors, and ethanol (40 mg L-1) as a co-substrate. The control treatments, with and without co-substrate, showed limited LAS biodegradation efficiencies of 10 ± 2% and 0%, respectively. However, when nitrate and iron (III) were present without co-substrate, biodegradation efficiencies of 53 ± 4% and 75 ± 3% were achieved, respectively, which were the highest levels observed. Clostridium spp. was prominent in all treatments, while Alkaliphilus spp. and Bacillus spp. thrived in the presence of iron, which had the most significant effect on LAS biodegradation. Those microorganisms were identified as crucial in affecting the LAS anaerobic degradation. The experiments revealed that the presence of electron acceptors fostered the development of a more specialised microbiota, especially those involved in the LAS biodegradation. A mutual interaction between the processes of degradation and adsorption was also shown.

Abstract
Microalgal biomass (MB) is a promising feedstock for bioenergy production. Nonetheless, the cell recalcitrance and the low C/N ratio limit the methane yield during anaerobic digestion. As an alternative to overcome these challenges, MB co-digestion with different feedstocks has been proposed. Thus, this study evaluated the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of MB cultivated in wastewater with sugarcane vinasse (VIN) and residual glycerol from biodiesel production (GLY). Batch tests were conducted using augmented simplex-centroid mixture design to investigate the impact of AcoD on methane production (SMP), synergistic effects, and the influence on microbial community. When compared to MB digestion, 150 NmL CH4.g-1VS, binary and ternary AcoD achieved SMP increases from 120 to 337%. The combination of 16.7:16.7:66.7 (MB:VIN:GLY) showed the highest SMP for a ternary mixture (631 NmL CH4.g-1VS). Optimal synergies ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 and were primarily found for the MB:GLY AcoD. Acetoclastic Methanosaeta genus was predominant, regardless the combination between substrates. Despite the largest SMP obtained from the MB:GLY AcoD, other ternary mixtures were also highly synergetic and therefore had strong potential as a strategic renewable energy source.

Abstract
ABSTRACTNonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that has bioaccumulative, persistent and toxic characteristics in different environmental matrices and is difficult to remove in sewage treatment plants. In this study, the effects of the initial concentration of NPE (0.2 ± 0.03 - 3.0 ± 0.02 mg. L-1) and ethanol (73.9 ± 5.0-218.6 ± 10.6 mg. L-1) were investigated using factorial design. Assays were carried out in anaerobic batch reactors, using the Zinder basal medium, yeast extract (200 mg. L-1), vitamin solution and sodium bicarbonate (10% v/v). The optimal conditions were 218.56 mg.L-1 of ethanol and 1596.51 µg.L-1 of NPE, with 92% and 88% of NPE and organic matter removal, respectively, and methane yield (1689.8 ± 59.6 mmol) after 450 h of operation. In this condition, bacteria potentially involved in the degradation of this surfactant were identified in greater relative abundance, such as Acetoanaerobium (1.68%), Smithella (1.52%), Aminivibrio (0.91%), Petrimonas (0.57%) and Enterobacter (0.47%), as well as archaea Methanobacterium and Methanoregula, mainly involved in hydrogenotrophic pathway.

Abstract
Bank filtration (BF) has been employed for more than a century for the production of water with a better quality, and it has been showing satisfactory results in diclofenac attenuation. Considered the most administered analgesic in the world, diclofenac has been frequently detected in water bodies. Besides being persistent in the environment, this compound is not completely removed by the conventional water treatments, drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and wastewater treatment plant (WWTPs). BF has a high complexity, whose efficiency depends on the characteristics of the observed pollutant and on the environment where the system in installed, which is why this is a topic that has been constantly studied. Nevertheless, studies present the behavior of diclofenac during the BF process. In this context, this research performed the evaluation of the factors and the biogeochemical processes that influence the efficiency of the BF technique in diclofenac removal. The aerobic conditions, higher temperatures, microbial biomass density, hydrogen potential close to neutrality and sediments with heterogeneous fractions are considered the ideal conditions in the aquifer for diclofenac removal. Nonetheless, there is no consensus on which of these factors has the greatest contribution on the mechanism of attenuation during BF. Studies with columns in laboratory and modeling affirm that the highest degradation rates occur in the first centimeters (5-50 cm) of the passage of water through the porous medium, in the environment known as hyporheic zone, where intense biogeochemical activities occur. Research has shown 100% removal efficiency for diclofenac persistent to compounds not removed during the BF process. However, half of the studies had removal efficiency that ranged between 80 and 100%. Therefore, the performance of more in-depth studies on the degradation and mobility of this compound becomes necessary for a better understanding of the conditions and biogeochemical processes which act in its attenuation.

Abstract
The indiscriminate use of glyphosate is one of the main agricultural practices to combat weeds and grasses; however, its incorrect application increases soil and water contamination caused by the product. This situation is even more critical due to its great versatility for use in different cultivars and at lower prices, making it the most used pesticide in the world. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of in-depth studies regarding the damage that its use may cause. Therefore, this review focused on the analysis of environmental impacts at the soil-water interface caused by the use of glyphosate. In this sense, studies have shown that the intensive use of glyphosate has the potential to cause harmful effects on soil microorganisms, leading to changes in soil fertility and ecological imbalance, as well as impacts on aquatic environments derived from changes in the food chain. This situation is similar in Brazil, with the harmful effects of glyphosate in nontarget species and the contamination of the atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to change this scenario by modifying the type of pest control in agriculture, and actions such as crop rotation and biological control.

Abstract
Sensitive biomes, such as coastal ecosystems, have become increasingly susceptible to environmental impacts caused by oil logistics and storing, which, although more efficient nowadays, still cause spills. Thus, bioremediation techniques attract attention owing to their low impact on the environment. Among petroleum-based compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known for their potential impact and persistence in the environment. Therefore, PAH bioremediation is notably a technique capable of reducing these polluting compounds in the environment. However, there is a lack of understanding of microbial growth process conditions, leading to a less efficient choice of bioremediation methods. This article provides a review of the bioremediation processes in mangroves contaminated with oils and PAHs and an overview of some physicochemical and biological factors. Special attention was given to the lack of approach regarding experiments that have been conducted in situ and that considered the predominance of the anaerobic condition of mangroves.

Abstract
Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPe) is a nonionic surfactant widely applied in domestic and industrial uses and its degradation generates the endocrine disruptor 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP). The effects of this compound in biological sewage treatment are uncertain, especially in anaerobic systems. The aim of this study was to assess the 4-NP removal and degradation in scale-up (20 L) Anaerobic Fluidized Bed Reactor (AFBR) filled with sand as support material, operated with Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 18 h, fed with synthetic sewage plus 4-NP, performed in four phases named Phase I (894 mg COD L-1), Phase II (878 mg COD L-1, 127 μg 4-NP L-1), Phase III (940 mg COD L-1, 270 μg 4-NP L-1) and Phase IV (568 mg COD L-1, 376 μg 4-NP L-1). 4-NP did not affect reactor stability and organic matter removal remained stable at 94%. Highest 4-NP removal (78%) occurred for highest 4-NP influent (Phase IV), which resulted from biomass adaptation in the presence of ethanol. Through the 4-NP total mass balance, about 70% was biodegraded and 1% adsorbed on the sand bed. 4-NP addition promoted selection of microbial consortium strongly linked to aromatic compounds and surfactants degradation such as Geothrix, Holophaga, Aeromonas, Pelobacter, Pseudomonas, Delftia.

Abstract
In this study, the removal of anionic surfactant Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) from laundry wastewater was evaluated in co-digestion with domestic sewage, using a pilot-scale Expanded Granular Sludge Bed reactor. Surfactant influent concentration was enhanced from 5 ± 3 mg LAS L-1 (stage I) to 19 ± 10 mg LAS L-1 (stage II) and 36 ± 19 mg LAS L-1 (stage III) throughout reactor operation. Sulfide levels higher than 20 mg L-1 influenced LAS removal efficiency, which decreased from 71% to 55% and 32% in stage I, II and III, respectively. Acclimation of microbial population was verified and higher relative abundance of the genera similar to Cytophaga, Bacteroides, Syntrophus and Syntrophobacter in the early stages (adaptation and stage I) was replaced by higher relative abundance of the genera Anaerophaga, Nitrosovibrio, Sulfurovum and Desulfovibrio in the last stages (stage II and III).

Abstract
In this study, simultaneous degradation of organic matter and color removal from food processing industries wastewater using an integrated anaerobic baffled reactor granular activated carbon (IABRGAC) was investigated. Theretofore, effective parameters such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and granular activated carbon (GAC) filling ratio were studied. The bioreactor was operated at 3, 4 and 5 d of HRT and GAC filling ratio of 20%, 35% and 50%. To analyze and optimize the independent operating variables, response surface methodology was applied. Operating condition was optimized for HRT (4 d) and GAC filling ratio (50%). Better COD (94.6%) and BOD (93.7%) removal efficiency occurred with loading COD of 15,000 mg/L, with diminished wastewater color around 54% and turbidity to 54 NTU. In addition, methane production, methane yielding rate (Ym) and specific methanogenic activity (SMA) test in an integrated system were investigated. The system IABRGAC was able to generate a volumetric rate about 0.31 and 0.44 L/g CODremoved d at the experimental condition. The Ym was between 0.31 and 0.44 L/g CODremoved.d and SMA was between 0.13 and 0.38 g COD/g volatile suspended solid. Based on results it can be concluded that the IABRGAC to be a successful pretreatment for highstrength wastewater before discharging the final effluent to sewerage and aerobic treating processes.

Abstract
Hydrogen production from hydrothermally pretreated (200 °C for 10 min at 16 bar) sugarcane bagasse was analyzed using response surface methodology. The yeast extract concentration and the temperature had a significant influence for hydrogen production (p-value 0.027 and 0.009, respectively). Maximum hydrogen production (17.7 mmol/L) was observed with 3 g/L yeast extract at 60 °C (C10). In this conditions were produced acetic acid (50.44 mg/L), butyric acid (209.71 mg/L), ethanol (38.4 mg/L), and methane (6.27 mmol/L). Lower hydrogen productions (3.5 mmol/L and 3.9 mmol/L) were observed under the conditions C7 (2 g/L of yeast extract, 35.8 °C) and C9 (1 g/L of yeast extract, 40 °C), respectively. The low yeast extract concentration and low temperature caused a negative effect on the hydrogen production. By means of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis 20% of similarity was observed between the archaeal population of mesophilic (35 and 40 °C) and thermophilic (50, 60 and 64 °C) reactors. Likewise, similarity of 22% was noted between the bacterial population for the reactors with the lowest hydrogen production (3.5 mmol/L), at 35.8 °C and with the highest hydrogen production (17.7 mmol/L) at 60 °C demonstrating that microbial population modification was a function of incubation temperature variation.

Abstract
This study presents a new method developed for the simultaneous determination of anionic surfactant (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate - LAS, 4 homologs) and nonionic surfactant (linear alcohol ethoxylate - LAE) in commercial laundry wastewater. The surfactants were identified and quantified using online column-switching solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Ten and three transitions (m/z) were identified for LAS and LAE, respectively. The detection and quantification limits were 75 and 200μg/L for LAS, respectively, and 75μg/L for LAE. This method was applied to the determination of the surfactants in the influent and effluent of an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor that was used for the treatment of commercial laundry wastewater. After 480days of operation with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 18h, the removal of 45.9±5.6% LAS and 99.2±4.3% LAE from an influent with surfactant concentrations of 26.1±12.9mg/L and 23.8±6.8mg/L, respectively, was obtained. Under these conditions, the breakage of longer-chain LAS homologs with the release of carbon units was observed with an increase in the number of shorter homolog chains. This SPE online sample treatment method is simple, fast and effective for the analysis of both surfactants. This technique is pioneering in its simultaneous measurement of two surfactant categories in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors.

Abstract
This study evaluates the kinetics of methane production and degradation of standard linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) (50 ± 3.5 mg/L) and LAS from laundry wastewater (85 ± 2.1 mg/L) in anaerobic batch reactors at 30°C with different sources of inoculum. The inocula were obtained by auto-fermentation (AFM) and UASB reactors from wastewater treatment of poultry slaughterhouse (SGH), swine production (SWT) and wastewater treatment thermophilic of sugarcane industry (THR). The study was divided into three phases: synthetic substrate (Phase I), standard LAS (Phase II) and LAS from laundry wastewater (Phase III). For SGH, the highest values for cumulative methane productions (1,844.8 ± 149 µmol-Phase II), methane production rate (70.8 ± 88 µmol/h-Phase II and 4.01 ± 07 µmol/h-Phase III) were observed. The use of thermophilic biomass (THR) incubated at 30°C was not favorable for methane production and LAS biodegradation, but the highest kinetic coefficient degradation (k1app) was obtained for LAS (0.33 ± 0.3 h) compared with mesophilic biomass (SGH and SWT) (0.13 ± 0.02 h). Therefore, both LAS sources influenced the kinetics of methane production and organic matter degradation. For SGH, inoculum obtained the highest LAS degradation. In the SGH inoculum sequenced by MiSeq-Illumina was identified genera (VadinCA02, Candidatus Cloacamonas, VadinHB04, PD-UASB-13) related to degrade toxic compounds. Therefore, it recommended the reactor mesophilic inoculum UASB (SGH) for the LAS degradation.

Abstract
The biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) from commercial laundry wastewater was evaluated in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (FBR) fed with synthetic substrate (598 mg L(-1) to 723 mg L(-1) of organic matter) supplemented with 9.5±3.1 mg L(-1) to 27.9±9.6 mg L(-1) of LAS. The average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 89% and the biodegradation of LAS was 57% during the 489 days of anaerobic FBR. Higher levels of volatile fatty acids (VFA) were observed in the effluent at the stage with the best LAS removal performance. Increasing the surfactant concentration did not increase the VFA production in the effluent. The predominant VFAs after the addition of LAS were as follows: isovaleric acid and valeric acid, followed by propionic acid, caproic acid and formic acid. The similarities of 64% and 45% to Archaea and Bacteria domains were observed in the samples taken in the operating period of anaerobic FBR fed with 23.6±10 mg L(-1) and 27.9±10 mg L(-1) of LAS. During the operation stages in the reactor, Gemmatimonas, Desulfobulbus and Zoogloea were determined as the most abundant genera related to surfactant degradation using 454-Pyrosequencing.

Abstract
The removal and degradation of the nonionic surfactant linear alcohol ethoxylate (LAE)Genapol® C-100 in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor were evaluated with 4.7 mg LAE/L to 107.4 mg LAE/L added to the synthetic substrate (535 ± 121 mg/L to 882 ± 126 mg/L of organic matter). High removal efficiencies of the COD (chemical oxygen demand) (88%) and LAE (98%) were observed even at high surfactant concentrations during the 492 days of operation. The absence of sucrose in the synthetic substrate modified the microbial community. Similarity coefficients between the phases with sucrose and without sucrose were 74% and 59% for the Archaea and Bacteria domains, respectively. The higher LAE removal (98%) was obtained for the 97.9 mg LAE/L influent in the absence of the co-substrate, as well as the greater diversity of volatile fatty acid. At the end of the reactor operation 2.05 mg of LAE was adsorbed in the biomass and 98.5% was biodegraded.

Abstract
From february 1980 to december 1985, 115 breast carcinomas were treated with QU.A.RT. with limited surgery and following radiotherapy. Median age was 51 years (range 25 to 75). Surgical approach was quadrantectomy with axillary nodes dissection. Irradiation of residual breast was performed by an anterior high energy electron beam. 50 Gy in 25 fractions was the minimal dose to whole breast. In pN+ patients systemic adjuvant therapy was done. Local control was obtained in 111 cases. Local recurrence appeared in 4: 1 menopausal pT1 pNO and 3 premenopausal (1 pT1 pNO and 2 pT1 pN+) at respectively 31, 19, 22 months from diagnosis. Distant metastases appeared in 10 patients. 7 died for cancer and 3 are still alive. Cosmetic results were scored as good in 52, better than mastectomy in 26, unsatisfactory in 3, and not stated in 34. Our results are comparable to those of other Centers. Youth, axillary metastases and delay between surgery and radiotherapy appears to influence the risk of recurrence also in our series.

A case of splenic artery aneurysm with ultrasonic examination discovered is reported and analyzed. The aneurysm pas asymptomatic and founded as incidental finding during standard x-ray. Arteriography was required to confirm the diagnosis and indicate the correct surgical treatment.

Abstract
On reviewing a consecutive series of 1,200 ultrasonic tomographies of the liver to assess the incidence of liver angiomas, the authors describe their sonographic, tomodensitometric and angiographic characteristics. They emphasise the fact that such lesions, though usually not constituting a serious clinical or diagnostic problem, as a simple sonographic follow-up will suffice to clarify the situation, may nevertheless, in certain particular clinical situations such as in the course of tumour staging of the digestive apparatus, require full diagnostic investigation using all the techniques available (ultrasonic tomography, CAT, liver arteriography, sonographically guided thin-needle biopsy.

Abstract
The authors report on a case of ductal adenoma of the breast, pointing out that routine clinico-instrumental diagnostic signs, though suggesting a picture of malignancy, may actually relate to this rare benign form of tumor. In the presence of cases of this type, we therefore advise a cautions approach to surgery, in that oncological radicality is subordinate to confirmation in the form of a traditional histological preparation, as freezer examinations are unable to provide wholly reliable responses.

Abstract
The authors report on a case of aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvis and perineum in a 46-year-old female patient. After reviewing the cases described in the literature, they examine the clinical characteristics of this rare form of neoplasia, which tends to occur more frequently in patients of female sex and in the young to middle-aged age bracket and is characterized by slow growth, non-infiltration of adjacent organs and a tendency to recur owing to incomplete excision. Metastases have never been reported. Failure to recognize the tumor at first approach may be due to the fact that it is easy to confuse it clinically with other more common diseases of the perineum. The authors conclude by advising systematic anatomicopathological identification of all perineal tumors, even when apparently benign.

Abstract
Splenic wandering is a rare condition of upset position of spleen, due to congenital fault or to excessive looseness of the supporting apparatus of this organ. The literature reports about 180 cases thereof, few of which recognized as such before operation. Ultimate investigations, in this limited number of preoperative diagnoses, resulted angiography and hepato-splenic scintigraphy; only three times the diagnosis was correctly placed through ultra-sounds. The authors show a case, confirmed by the operative report, where the ultrasonic test allowed to place the diagnosis with certainty, and, due to a particular lot of circumstances, proved to be better than TAC.

Abstract
Portal thrombosis is a rare acquired condition with various etiology. Clinical manifestations are portal hypertension or nine. The main technics to diagnostic are: CT, indirect splenoportography and ultrasound examination. The first and the second are reliable but the third only is useful to explore the portal system and to evaluate patients with suspect portal vein thrombosis.
