Novel MoS2/montmorillonite hybrid aerogel encapsulated PEG as composite phase change materials with superior solar-thermal energy harvesting and storage

Phase change materials (PCMs) offer significant advantages in energy conversion and storage by facilitating the storage and release of thermal energy during phase transition processes. However, challenges such as leakage during PCM phase transitions and poor light absorption properties have constrained their application in the field of photothermal energy storage. In this study, Montmorillonite (Mt) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been used to design and synthesize hybrid aerogels (MoS2/Mt) boasting high mechanical strength and excellent photothermal conversion performance. These aerogels are then used to encapsulate polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prepare composite PCMs with outstanding solar-thermal conversion and storage performances. The results show that the synthesized MoS2/Mt-PEG composite PCMs exhibit high enthalpies of melting and solidification of 169.16 J/g and 170.78 J/g, respectively, while the aerogel supporting material has a high compressive modulus of 1.96 MPa. Moreover, the composite material displayed excellent thermal stability and leakage resistance after undergoing 30 melting-cooling cycles. Furthermore, the incorporation of MoS2 imparted outstanding light absorption properties to the MoS2/Mt-PEG composite, resulting in a high light absorption and photothermal conversion-storage efficiency of 93.4 % and 96.47 %, respectively. Synthesized composite PCMs also demonstrate outstanding performance in solar-thermal-electricity conversion, achieving a voltage output of 458 mV under illumination conditions and maintaining a sustainable voltage output even after removing the light source. Thus, the composite PCMs prepared in this work can meet the requirements of high enthalpy, effective leakage prevention, efficient solar-thermal conversion and solar-thermal-electricity conversion performance, thereby presenting potential applications in practical solar energy collection, conversion, and storage.

Enhancing the Cycling and Rate Performance of Ni-Rich Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries by Bulk-Phase Engineering and Surface Reconstruction

The structural and interfacial instability of Ni-rich layered cathodes LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 (NCM9055) severely hinders their commercial application. In this work, straightforward high-temperature solid-state methods are utilized to successfully synthesize Nb-doped and Li3PO4-coated LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 by combining two niobium sources, NbOPO4·3H2O and Nb2O5, for the first time. Studies indicate that Nb doping enhanced the integrity of the layered structure, and the Li3PO4 coating reduced water absorption on the surface and considerably boosted the durability of the interface. The dual-modified cathode Li(Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05)0.985Nb0.015O2@Li3PO4 (NCM-2) exhibits remarkable cycling and rate performance. The initial discharge specific capacity of NCM-2 is 203.33 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 196.04 mAh g-1 at 1 C, while the capacity retention after 200 cycles is 91.38% at 1 C, which is much higher than that of pristine NCM9055 (49.96%). In addition, it also provides a superior discharge specific capacity of about 175.63 mAh g-1 even at 5 C. This study emphasizes a feasible approach to enhancing the stability of Ni-rich cathodes at the interfaces and bulk structures.

Identification of SOCS3 and PTGS2 as new biomarkers for the diagnosis of gout by cross-species comprehensive analysis

Background

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in adults. Gout is an arthritic disease caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystal (MSU) in the joints, which can lead to acute inflammation and damage adjacent tissue. Hyperuricemia is the main risk factor for MSU crystal deposition and gout. With the increasing burden of gout disease, the identification of potential biomarkers and novel targets for diagnosis is urgently needed.

Methods

For the analysis of this subject paper, we downloaded the human gout data set GSE160170 and the gout mouse model data set GSE190138 from the GEO database. To obtain the differentially expressed genes (DEGs), we intersected the two data sets. Using the cytohubba algorithm, we identified the key genes and enriched them through GO and KEGG. The gene expression trends of three subgroups (normal control group, intermittent gout group and acute gout attack group) were analyzed by Series Test of Cluster (STC) analysis, and the key genes were screened out, and the diagnostic effect was verified by ROC curve. The expression of key genes in dorsal root nerve and spinal cord of gout mice was analyzed. Finally, the clinical samples of normal control group, hyperuricemia group, intermittent gout group and acute gout attack group were collected, and the expression of key genes at protein level was verified by ELISA.

Result

We obtained 59 co-upregulated and 28 co-downregulated genes by comparing the DEGs between gout mouse model data set and human gout data set. 7 hub DEGs(IL1B, IL10, NLRP3, SOCS3, PTGS2) were screened out via Cytohubba algorithm. The results of both GO and KEGG enrichment analyses indicate that 7 hub genes play a significant role in regulating the inflammatory response, cytokine production in immune response, and the TNF signaling pathway. The most representative hub genes SOCS3 and PTGS2 were screened out by Series Test of Cluster, and ROC analysis results showed the AUC values were both up to 1.000. In addition, we found that PTGS2 expression was significantly elevated in the dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord in monosodium urate(MSU)-induced gout mouse model. The ELISA results revealed that the expression of SOCS3 and PTGS2 was notably higher in the acute gout attack and intermittent gout groups compared to the normal control group. This difference was statistically significant, indicating a clear distinction between the groups.

Conclusion

Through cross-species comprehensive analysis and experimental verification, SOCS3 and PTGS2 were proved to be new biomarkers for diagnosing gout and predicting disease progression.

A Metagenomic Investigation of Potential Health Risks and Element Cycling Functions of Bacteria and Viruses in Wastewater Treatment Plants

The concentration of viruses in sewage sludge is significantly higher (10-1000-fold) than that found in natural environments, posing a potential risk for human and animal health. However, the composition of these viruses and their role in the transfer of pathogenic factors, as well as their role in the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed a shotgun metagenomic approach to investigate the pathogenic bacteria and viral composition and function in two wastewater treatment plants located on a campus. Our analysis revealed the presence of 1334 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) across six sludge samples, with 242 ASVs (41.22% of total reads) identified as pathogenic bacteria. Arcobacter was found to be the most dominant pathogen accounting for 6.79% of total reads. The virome analysis identified 613 viral genera with Aorunvirus being the most abundant genus at 41.85%. Approximately 0.66% of these viruses were associated with human and animal diseases. More than 60% of the virome consisted of lytic phages. Host prediction analysis revealed that the phages primarily infected Lactobacillus (37.11%), Streptococcus (21.11%), and Staphylococcus (7.11%). Furthermore, our investigation revealed an abundance of auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) involved in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling within the virome. We also detected a total of 113 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), covering major classes of antibiotics across all samples analyzed. Additionally, our findings indicated the presence of virulence factors including the clpP gene accounting for approximately 4.78%, along with toxin genes such as the RecT gene representing approximately 73.48% of all detected virulence factors and toxin genes among all samples analyzed. This study expands our understanding regarding both pathogenic bacteria and viruses present within sewage sludge while providing valuable insights into their ecological functions.

Impact of adenomyosis on pregnancy outcomes: a retrospective consecutive cohort study

OBJECTIVE

This retrospective study explored the potential connection between adenomyosis and pregnancy outcomes.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A study included data from a total of 1,208 pregnancies. The adenomyosis group included 334 pregnant women with adenomyosis, and women in the control group (n=874) had uncomplicated pregnancies. Data on pregnancy complications and maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared.

RESULTS

The incidence of gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and placenta previa was higher in the adenomyosis group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Adenomyosis was linked to a higher risk of postpartum hemorrhage (1,000-1,500 ml) but a lower risk of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) (p<0.05). Diagnosis of adenomyosis correlated with increased incidence of low fetal weight (20.3% vs. 21.3%, p<0.05) and a low APGAR score at 1 min (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Adenomyosis correlated with a higher incidence of gestational hypertension, placenta previa, and gestational diabetes. At the same time, adenomyosis correlated with a significantly lower incidence of PROM compared to uncomplicated pregnancy. There was a significant increase in the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage and a higher risk of low fetal weight and lower APGAR score at 1 min in pregnancies with adenomyosis.

Tracing the attenuation of fipronil and its transformation products from a rice paddy field to receiving rivers using polar organic chemical integrative samplers

Irrational use of fipronil for rice pest control often occurred, resulting in high concentrations of fipronil and its transformation products (TPs) (collectively termed fiproles) in aquatic sediment, calling for a better understanding of the migration and transformation of fipronil in surface water as well as efficient methods for source identification. Herein, the fate and transport of fiproles from a paddy field to receiving rivers were assessed in Poyang Lake basin, Jiangxi, China using polar organic chemical integrative samplers with mixed-mode adsorbents (POCIS-MMA). Average concentrations of fiproles in water were 6.16 ± 6.32 ng/L, with median, minimum, and maximum values being 2.99 ± 0.67, 0.40 ± 0.08, and 18.6 ± 3.1 ng/L, respectively. In all samples, over half of fiproles (55.9 %-90.8 %) presented in the form of TPs and fipronil desulfinyl was the dominant TP. Two approaches were applied for source identification, including the change of molar concentration ratios of fipronil to its TPs and the relative attenuation values of fiproles normalized to a reference compound (acetamiprid) that was stable in aquatic environment. While the paddy field upstream was the main source of waterborne fiproles, additional input sources in the downstream region were identified. The present study indicated that the combination of attenuation of molar concentration ratios of micro-pollutants to their respective TPs and relative attenuation values of micro-pollutants' concentrations normalized to a reference compound measured by POCIS is an effective means to study the migration and transformation of micro-pollutants in field.

Prediction of Xe/Kr Separation in Metal-Organic Frameworks by a Precursor-Based Neural Network Synergistic with a Polarizable Adsorbate Model

Adsorption and separation of Xe/Kr are significant for making high-density nuclear energy environmentally friendly and for meeting the requirements of the gas industry. Enhancing the accuracy of the adsorbate model for describing the adsorption behaviors of Xe and Kr in MOFs and the efficiency of the model for predicting the separation potential (SP) value of Xe/Kr separation in MOFs helps in searching for promising MOFs for Xe/Kr adsorption and separation within a short time and at a low cost. In this work, polarizable and transferable models for mimic Xe and Kr adsorption behaviors in MOFs were constructed. Using these models, SP values of 38 MOFs at various temperatures and pressures were calculated. An optimal neural network model called BPNN-SP was designed to predict SP value based on physical parameters of metal center (electronegativity and radius) and organic linker (three-dimensional size and polarizability) combined with temperature and pressure. The regression coefficient value of the BPNN-SP model for each data set is higher than 0.995. MAE, MBE, and RMSE of BPNN-SP are only 0.331, -0.002, and 0.505 mmol/g, respectively. Finally, BPNN-SP was validated by experiment data from six MOFs. The transferable adsorbate model combined with the BPNN-SP model would highly improve the efficiency for designing MOFs with high performance for Xe/Kr adsorption and separation.

Temporal Structures in Positron Spectra and Charge-Sign Effects in Galactic Cosmic Rays

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic positron fluxes in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 3.4×10^{6} positrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The positron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the electron fluxes at short and long timescales. A hysteresis between the electron fluxes and the positron fluxes is observed with a significance greater than 5σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. On the contrary, the positron fluxes and the proton fluxes show similar time variation. Remarkably, we found that positron fluxes are modulated more than proton fluxes with a significance greater than 5σ for rigidities below 7 GV. These continuous daily positron fluxes, together with AMS daily electron, proton, and helium fluxes over an 11-year solar cycle, provide unique input to the understanding of both the charge-sign and mass dependencies of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

Occurrence and water-sediment exchange of systemic insecticides and their transformation products in an agriculture-dominated basin

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronil (FIP) are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, yet the transformation and water-sediment exchange are largely unknown for these systemic insecticides and their transformation products (TPs). Herein, occurrence, field-based partitioning coefficients, and fugacity fractions (ff) of NEOs, FIP, and their TPs were analyzed in the drainage and receiving rivers near a rice paddy field. NEOs and FIPs were frequently detected in the sediments with concentrations of TPs being often higher than the parent compounds. Average ff values of NEOs (0.944-1.00) were larger than those of FIPs (0.399-0.716), indicating NEOs had a greater tendency to diffuse from sediment into water. Similar as well-studied hydrophobic compounds, hydrophobicity was the main factor impacting the water-sediment exchange of moderately hydrophobic FIPs. Alternatively, electrostatic interactions governed the fate of hydrophilic NEOs in water-sediment system. The log Kd values of NEOs were positively correlated with their N/C ratios (p < 0.05), possibly because the negatively charged sediments (zeta potential were from -19.1 ± 0.6 to -5.84 ± 0.57 mV) generated electrostatic attraction with amino functional group. Our study highlighted the ubiquitousness of TPs and distinct water-sediment interaction for moderately hydrophobic and hydrophilic insecticides in an agriculture-dominated watershed.

Genomic Characterization of a Halovirus Representing a Novel Siphoviral Cluster

Salt mines are a special type of hypersaline environment. Current research mainly focuses on prokaryotes, and the understanding of viruses in salt mines remains limited. Understanding viruses in hypersaline environments is of great significance for revealing the formation and maintenance of microbial communities, energy flow and element cycling, and host ecological functions. A phage infecting Halomonas titanicae was isolated from Yipinglang Salt Mine in China, designated Halomonas titanicae phage vB_HtiS_YPHTV-1 (YPHTV-1). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that YPHTV-1 had an icosahedral head with a diameter of 49.12 ± 0.15 nm (n = 5) and a long noncontractile tail with a length of 141.7 ± 0.58 nm (n = 5), indicating that it was a siphovirus. The one-step growth curve showed that the burst size of YPHTV-1 was 69 plaque forming units (PFUs) cell^-1. The genome of YPHTV-1 was 37,980 bp with a GC content of 36.2%. The phylogenetic analysis of the six conserved proteins indicated that YPHTV-1 formed a cluster with Bacillus phages and was separated from phages infecting Halomonas. The average nucleotide identity (ANI), phylogenetic, and network analyses indicated that the phage YPHTV-1 represented a new genus under Caudoviricetes. In total, 57 open reading frames (ORFs) were predicted in the YPHTV-1 genome, 30 of which could be annotated in the database. Notably, several auxiliary metabolic genes were encoded by YPHTV-1, such as ImmA/IrrE family metalloendopeptidase, mannose-binding lectin (MBL) folding metallohydrolase, M15 family of metal peptidases, MazG-like family protein, O antigen ligase, and acyltransferase. These genes potentially enabled the host bacterium to resist ionizing radiation, ultraviolet light (UV), mitomycin C, β-lactam antibiotic, high osmotic pressure, and nutritional deficiencies. These findings highlight the role of haloviruses in the life cycle of halobacteria.

MRI manifestations of central nervous system leukaemia and cytological analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid

AIM

To investigate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and explore the value of MRI in the diagnosis of central nervous system leukaemia (CNSL).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective study was performed in 68 patients with leukaemia who underwent cranial MRI between January 2020 and June 2022 at Institute of Hematology and Blood Diseases Hospital.

RESULTS

A total of 33 patients fulfilled the requirements for inclusion. The findings showed that 87.9% patients exhibited neurological symptoms, and 23 patients showed abnormal MRI findings. No differences were observed between the MRI+ and MRI- groups in terms of age, sex, neurological symptoms, glucose in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), chloride in the CSF, abnormal cells detected using conventional cytology (CC), bone marrow status at the diagnosis of CNSL, signal intensity ratio, and mortality, except for protein concentration and the number of leukaemic cells detected using flow cytometry (FCM) in the CSF. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis in patients with leukaemia revealed no statistical differences in the median survival times between the MRI+ group and MRI- group. Cox regression analysis and multivariate analysis showed no significant difference in survival rate between the MRI+ and MRI- groups. Kappa consistency test shows weak diagnostic consistency between MRI and CC, and weak diagnostic inconsistency between MRI and FCM.

CONCLUSION

MRI could serve as an important complementary tool to CC and FCM in the diagnosis of CNSL, especially in patients without leptomeningeal involvement.

Properties of Cosmic-Ray Sulfur and Determination of the Composition of Primary Cosmic-Ray Carbon, Neon, Magnesium, and Sulfur: Ten-Year Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38×10^{6} sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

[Hotspots and prospects of esophageal cancer research in China]

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor with a high incidence in China. At pesent, advanced esophageal cancer patients are still frequently encountered. The primary treatment for resectable advanced esophageal cancer is surgery-based multimodality therapy, including preoperative neoadjuvant therapy, such as chemotherapy, chemoradiotherapy or chemotherapy plus immunotherapy, followed by radical esophagectomy with thoraco-abdominal two-field or cervico-thoraco-abdominal three-field lymphadenectomy via minimally invasive approach or thoracotomy. In addition, adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or chemoradiotherapy, or immunotherapy may also be administered if suggested by postoperative pathological results. Although the treatment outcome of esophageal cancer has improved significantly in China, many clinical issues remain controversial. In this article, we summarize the current hotspots and important issues of esophageal cancer in China, including prevention and early diagnosis, treatment selection for early esophageal cancer, surgical approach selection, lymphadenectomy method, preoperative neoadjuvant therapy, postoperative adjuvant therapy, and nutritional support treatment.

Temporal Structures in Electron Spectra and Charge Sign Effects in Galactic Cosmic Rays

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic electron fluxes in the rigidity interval from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 2.0×10^{8} electrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The electron fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. Recurrent electron flux variations with periods of 27 days, 13.5 days, and 9 days are observed. We find that the electron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the proton fluxes. Remarkably, a hysteresis between the electron flux and the proton flux is observed with a significance of greater than 6σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. Furthermore, significant structures in the electron-proton hysteresis are observed corresponding to sharp structures in both fluxes. This continuous daily electron data provide unique input to the understanding of the charge sign dependence of cosmic rays over an 11-year solar cycle.

Global survival trends for brain tumors, by histology: analysis of individual records for 556,237 adults diagnosed in 59 countries during 2000-2014 (CONCORD-3)

BACKGROUND

Survival is a key metric of the effectiveness of a health system in managing cancer. We set out to provide a comprehensive examination of worldwide variation and trends in survival from brain tumors in adults, by histology.

METHODS

We analyzed individual data for adults (15-99 years) diagnosed with a brain tumor (ICD-O-3 topography code C71) during 2000-2014, regardless of tumor behavior. Data underwent a 3-phase quality control as part of CONCORD-3. We estimated net survival for 11 histology groups, using the unbiased nonparametric Pohar Perme estimator.

RESULTS

The study included 556,237 adults. In 2010-2014, the global range in age-standardized 5-year net survival for the most common sub-types was broad: in the range 20%-38% for diffuse and anaplastic astrocytoma, from 4% to 17% for glioblastoma, and between 32% and 69% for oligodendroglioma. For patients with glioblastoma, the largest gains in survival occurred between 2000-2004 and 2005-2009. These improvements were more noticeable among adults diagnosed aged 40-70 years than among younger adults.

CONCLUSIONS

To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the largest account to date of global trends in population-based survival for brain tumors by histology in adults. We have highlighted remarkable gains in 5-year survival from glioblastoma since 2005, providing large-scale empirical evidence on the uptake of chemoradiation at population level. Worldwide, survival improvements have been extensive, but some countries still lag behind. Our findings may help clinicians involved in national and international tumor pathway boards to promote initiatives aimed at more extensive implementation of clinical guidelines.

Conservative versus liberal oxygen therapy in relation to all-cause mortality among patients in the intensive care unit: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the benefits and harmful effects of conservative versus liberal oxygen therapy in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

DESIGN

A systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out.

SETTING

ICU.

PARTICIPANTS

Adult patients (aged 18 years or older) were randomized to either a lower oxygenation target strategy (conservative oxygen therapy) or a higher oxygenation target strategy (liberal oxygen therapy) in the ICU.

INTERVENTIONS

Patients received different oxygenation target strategies.

RESULTS

Ten studies involving 5429 adult patients admitted to the ICU were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled results showed no decreased all-cause mortality at 28 days (RR 0.90; 95%CI 0.75-1.09; p = 0.28), 90 days (RR 1.02; 95%CI 0.92-1.13; p = 0.71) or longest follow-up (RR 0.97; 95%CI 0.88-1.08; p = 0.63) among patients administered conservative oxygen therapy. Secondary outcomes were comparable between the two groups. The results of sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses were consistent with the main analyses.

CONCLUSION

No beneficial or harmful effects of conservative oxygen therapy were found compared to liberal oxygen therapy in relation to all-cause mortality among adult patients in the ICU. Conservative oxygen therapy did not reduce all-cause mortality at 28 days, 90 days or longest follow-up. Other important clinical outcomes were also comparable between the two groups.

Characterization and genomic analysis of a novel halovirus infecting Chromohalobacter beijerinckii

Bacteriophages function as a regulator of host communities and metabolism. Many phages have been isolated and sequenced in environments such as the ocean, but very little is known about hypersaline environments. Phages infecting members of the genus Chromohalobacter remain poorly understood, and no Chromohalobacter phage genome has been reported. In this study, a halovirus infecting Chromohalobacter sp. F3, YPCBV-1, was isolated from Yipinglang salt mine. YPCBV-1 could only infect host strain F3 with burst size of 6.3 PFU/cell. It could produce progeny in 5%-20% (w/v) NaCl with an optimal concentration of 10% (w/v), but the optimal adsorption NaCl concentration was 5%-8% (w/v). YPCBV-1 is sensitive to pure water and depends on NaCl or KCl solutions to survive. YPCBV-1 stability increased with increasing salinity but decreased in NaCl saturated solutions, and it has a broader salinity adaptation than the host. YPCBV-1 has a double-stranded DNA of 36,002 bp with a G + C content of 67.09% and contains a total of 55 predicted ORFs and no tRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis and genomic network analysis suggested that YPCBV-1 is a novel Mu-like phage under the class Caudoviricetes. Auxiliary metabolic gene, SUMF1/EgtB/PvdO family non-heme iron enzyme, with possible roles in antioxidant was found in YPCBV-1. Moreover, DGR-associated genes were predicted in YPCBV-1 genome, which potentially produce hypervariable phage tail fiber. These findings shed light on the halovirus-host interaction in hypersaline environments.

Hollow Nanowire Constructed by NiCo Doped RuO2 Nanoparticles for Robust Hydrogen Evolution at High-Current-Density

Large-current-density electrocatalytic water splitting is essential for industrial hydrogen production, but it is currently hindered by lacking active and robust hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein, a novel electrode of hollow nanowire arrays constructed by NiCo modified RuO₂ nanoparticles on Ni foam (NiCo@RuO₂ HNAs/NF) for high-performance HER was reported. Such efficient electrode was fabricated by ion exchange with NF-supported Ni modified cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanowire arrays template (Ni@CoCH NAs/NF). The formed NiCo@RuO₂ HNAs/NF only needed overpotentials of 148.5 and 236.1 mV to deliver 500 and 1000 mA cm^-2 , respectively, along with excellent stability at the high-current-density for 300 h. Such remarkable HER performance was mainly attributed to the hollow structure with high surface area, hydrophilic feature, and NiCo@RuO₂ with optimized hydrogen evolution kinetics. After coupling with anodic Ni@CoCH NAs/NF, our electrolyzer outperformed Pt/C-IrO₂ and most other Ru-based electrolyzers. This work provides a promising Pt alternative catalyst for profitable H₂ production.

Photoluminescence Mechanism of Carbon Dots: Triggering Multiple Color Emissions through Controlling the Degree of Protonation

Carbon dots (CDs) have excellent optical properties, low toxicity and easy preparation, which have led to them being widely used in biomedicine, sensing and optical devices. However, although great progress has been made in the preparation of CDs, the detailed exploration of their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism is still under debate due to their complex structures and surface functionalities. Here, we proposed a single change in the pH of the synthesis condition, which had no effect on the CDs intrinsic core states and avoided the mutual influence of multiple PL origins. The m-phenylenediamine (m–PD) served as a carbon source, whose protonation degree determined the surface state of the resulting CDs and the accompanying fluorescence characteristics. The as-obtained CDs materials can be applied in the chemical sensor and anti-counterfeiting fields in a targeted manner. Therefore, our work not only contributes to the explanation of the CDs PL mechanism, but also obtains a series of CDs materials with controllable PL properties.

Understanding nutritive need in Harmonia axyridis larvae: Insights from nutritional geometry

The multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is an important natural enemy in agricultural ecosystems. In spite of being a carnivore consuming protein-rich preys, the lady beetles often consume carbohydrate-rich food like nectar or honeydew. However, most studies on nutrition regulation of carnivores mainly focus on protein and lipid, two major macronutrients in preys. In this study, nutrition regulation of protein and carbohydrate has been investigated in the 4th instar larvae of H. axyridis using Geometric Framework. We provided the insects two pairs of foods, one a protein-biased one and the second carbohydrate-biased, to determine the intake target. We then confined them to nutritionally imbalanced foods to examine how they regulated food intake to achieve maximal performance. The larvae performed well on the 2 foods that containing the closest P : C ratios to the intake target, but, surprisingly, the lipid content was much lower than that in the choice experiment. The lady beetles seemed to maintain the optimal lipid content by consuming carbohydrate-rich food. Moreover, consuming the carbohydrate-rich food was less metabolically expensive than the protein-rich food. Therefore, switching behavior between plant and animal foods actually reflects their nutritive needs. These findings extended our understanding of predator forage behavior and its influence on food web in ecosystems, and shed light on the role of agri-environment schemes in meeting the nutritional need of predators in field.

In Situ Reconstructed Zn doped Fex Ni(1- x ) OOH Catalyst for Efficient and Ultrastable Oxygen Evolution Reaction at High Current Densities

Developing FeOOH as a robust electrocatalyst for high output oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenging due to its low conductivity and dissolvability in alkaline conditions. Herein, it is demonstrated that the robust and high output Zn doped NiOOH-FeOOH (Zn-Fe_x Ni_(1-x) )OOH catalyst can be derived by electro-oxidation-induced reconstruction from the pre-electrocatalyst of Zn modified Ni metal/FeOOH film supported by nickel foam (NF). In situ Raman and ex situ characterizations elucidate that the pre-electrocatalyst undergoes dynamic reconstruction occurring on both the catalyst surface and underneath metal support during the OER process. That involves the Fe dissolution-redeposition and the merge of Zn doped FeOOH with in situ generated NiOOH from NF support and NiZn alloy nanoparticles. Benefiting from the Zn doping and the covalence interaction of FeOOH-NiOOH, the reconstructed electrode shows superior corrosion resistance, and enhanced catalytic activity as well as bonding force at the catalyst-support interface. Together with the feature of superaerophobic surface, the reconstructed electrode only requires an overpotential of 330 mV at a high-current-density of 1000 mA cm^-2 and maintains 97% of its initial activity after 1000 h. This work provides an in-depth understanding of electrocatalyst reconstruction during the OER process, which facilitates the design of high-performance OER catalysts.

Advancement on target ranging and tracking by single-point photon counting lidar

Laser tracking with a cooperative target has been widely used in many fields and becomes increasingly important while the non-cooperative target tracking is still a challenge. In this article, a pure laser scanning, ranging and tracking system based on a single-point single photon detector (SP-SPD) is proposed, which can achieve a non-cooperative target real-time tracking without any other passive detection sensor. Through laboratory tracking experiment, we realized the real-time angular measurement, ranging and tracking of a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at a distance of about 38 m. The results show that the system and its tracking strategy have the ability to achieve a non-cooperative target real-time ranging and tracking in conditions of weak echo signals (a few tenths of a photoelectron), which means that the pure lidar tracking of the non-cooperative target in far distance become reality. It has important guiding significance and application value for a non-cooperative long-distance target ranging and tracking in the airspace.

Utilisation of village clinics in Southwest China: evidence from Yunnan Province

INTRODUCTION

Primary healthcare in rural China is underutilised, especially in village clinics in Southwest China. The aim of this study was to explore any relationships among the ethnicity of the healthcare provider, the clinical competence of the healthcare provider, and the utilisation of village clinics in Southwest China.

METHODS

This cross-sectional survey study involved 330 village healthcare providers from three prefectures in Yunnan Province in 2017. Multiple logistic regressions were adopted to investigate the utilisation of primary healthcare among different ethnic healthcare providers.

RESULTS

Primary healthcare utilisation was higher in village clinics where healthcare providers were Han Chinese than those where healthcare providers were ethnic minority (151 vs 101, P=0.008). The logistic regression analysis showed that clinical competence was positively associated with the utilisation of primary healthcare (odds ratio [OR]=1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.12-2.00; P=0.007) and that inadequate clinical competence of ethnic minority health workers may lead to a lag in the utilisation of primary healthcare (OR=0.45, 95% CI=0.23-0.89; P=0.022).

CONCLUSION

Our results confirm differences in the utilisation of primary healthcare in rural Yunnan Province among healthcare providers of different ethnicities. Appropriate enhancements of clinical competence could be conducive to improving the utilisation of primary healthcare, especially among ethnic minority healthcare providers.

Properties of Daily Helium Fluxes

We present the precision measurement of 2824 daily helium fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 in the rigidity interval from 1.71 to 100 GV based on 7.6×10^{8} helium nuclei collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The helium flux and the helium to proton flux ratio exhibit variations on multiple timescales. In nearly all the time intervals from 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent helium flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. In the entire time period, we found that below ∼7  GV the helium flux exhibits larger time variations than the proton flux, and above ∼7  GV the helium to proton flux ratio is time independent. Remarkably, below 2.4 GV a hysteresis between the helium to proton flux ratio and the helium flux was observed at greater than the 7σ level. This shows that at low rigidity the modulation of the helium to proton flux ratio is different before and after the solar maximum in 2014.

Neutral Processes Provide an Insight Into the Structure and Function of Gut Microbiota in the Cotton Bollworm

Gut-associated microbes can influence insect health and fitness. Understanding the structure of bacterial communities provides valuable insights on how different species may be selected and their functional characteristics in their hosts. The neutral model is powerful in predicting the structure of microbial communities, but its application in insects remains rare. Here, we examined the contribution of neutral processes to the gut-associated bacterial communities in Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars collected from different maize varieties at four locations. The gut-associated bacteria can be assigned to 37 Phyla, 119 orders, and 515 genera, with each individual gut containing 17–75% of the OTUs and 19–79% of the genera in the pooled samples of each population. The distribution patterns of most (75.59–83.74%) bacterial taxa were in good agreement with the neutral expectations. Of the remaining OTUs, some were detected in more individual hosts than would be predicted by the neutral model (i.e., above-partition), and others were detected in fewer individual hosts than predicted by the neutral model (i.e., below-partition). The bacterial taxa in the above-partitions were potentially selected by the caterpillar hosts, while the bacteria in the below-partitions may be preferentially eliminated by the hosts. Moreover, the gut-associated microbiota seemed to vary between maize varieties and locations, so ecological parameters outside hosts can affect the bacterial communities. Therefore, the structure of gut microbiota in the H. armigera caterpillar was mainly determined by stochastic processes, and the bacteria in the above-partition warrant further investigation for their potential roles in the caterpillar host.

Directly Printed Embedded Metal Mesh for Flexible Transparent Electrode via Liquid Substrate Electric-Field-Driven Jet

Flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) with embedded metal meshes play an indispensable role in many optoelectronic devices due to their excellent mechanical stability and environmental adaptability. However, low-cost, simple, efficient, and environmental friendly integrated manufacturing of high-performance embedded metal meshes remains a huge challenge. Here, a facile and novel fabrication method is proposed for FTEs with an embedded metal mesh via liquid substrateelectric-field-driven microscale 3D printing process. This direct printing strategy avoids tedious processes and offers low-cost and high-volume production, enabling the fabrication of high-resolution, high-aspect ratio embedded metal meshes without sacrificing transparency. The final manufactured FTEs with 80 mm × 80 mm embedded metal mesh offers excellent optoelectronic performance with a sheet resistance (R_s ) of 6 Ω sq^-1 and a transmittance (T) of 85.79%. The embedded metal structure still has excellent mechanical stability and good environmental suitability under different harsh working conditions. The practical feasibility of the FTEs is successfully demonstrated with a thermally driven 4D printing structure and a resistive transparent strain sensor. This method can be used to manufacture large areas with facile, high-efficiency, low-cost, and high-performance FTEs.

3D Printed High Performance Silver Mesh for Transparent Glass Heaters through Liquid Sacrificial Substrate Electric-Field-Driven Jet

Transparent glass with metal mesh is considered a promising strategy for high performance transparent glass heaters (TGHs). However, the realization of simple, low-cost manufacture of high performance TGHs still faces great challenges. Here, a technique for the fabrication of high performance TGHs is proposed using liquid sacrificial substrate electric-field-driven (LS-EFD) microscale 3D printing of thick film silver paste. The liquid sacrificial substrate not only significantly improves the aspect ratio (AR) of silver mesh, but also plays a positive role in printing stability. The fabricated TGHs with a line width of 35 µm, thickness of 12.3 µm, and pitch of 1000 µm exhibit a desirable optoelectronic performance with sheet resistance (R_s ) of 0.195 Ω sq^-1 and transmittance (T) of 88.97%. A successful deicing test showcases the feasibility and practicality of the manufactured TGHs. Moreover, an interface evaporator is developed for the coordination of photothermal and electrothermal systems based on the high performance TGHs. The vapor generation rate of the device reaches 10.69 kg m^-2 h^-1 with a voltage of 2 V. The proposed technique is a promising strategy for the cost-effective and simple fabrication of high performance TGHs.

Effect of different dosage of sodium butyrate and niacin on growth, fecal microbiota and vitamin B metabolism in weaned piglets

AIMS

Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of different dosages of sodium butyrate and niacin on the growth performance, fecal vitamin B and microbiota in weaned piglets.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Seventy-two weaned piglets (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire, age of 21d) were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatments (12 pigs / treatment): the control (CT) group was administered a basal diet. The groups which concentration ratio of sodium butyrate to niacin were 100: 1, 100: 2, 100: 4, 100: 8 and 100: 16 (BN1, BN2, BN4, BN8, BN16) were administered a basal diet supplemented with 2000 mg·kg^-1 sodium butyrate and 20 mg·kg^-1 , 40 mg·kg^-1 , 80 mg·kg^-1 , 160 mg·kg^-1 or 320 mg·kg^-1 niacin. After 14-d treatment, the samples were collected. The results showed that feed conversion rate (FCR) was reduced and average daily gain (ADG) was increased in BN2 (P < 0.05). The diarrhea index of pigs decreased with the low supplement. Additionally, compared with CT group, other groups significantly increased (P < 0.05) the abundance of Firmicutes (BN4, phylum), Lactobacillaceae (BN8, family), Megasphaera (BN8, genus), and Lactobacillus (BN8, genus). Furthermore, the sodium butyrate and niacin supplementation influence vitamin B1, vitamin B2, pyridoxine, niacin, nicotinamide, and vitamin B12 (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis of the association of microorganisms with vitamin B indicated that changes of vitamin B metabolism have potential correlation with alterations of fecal microbiota in weaned piglets.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicated that adding of sodium butyrate and niacin in the diet could promote the performance and improve the fecal microbiota and vitamin B metabolism in weaned piglets.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

Our study might provide clues to the research of correlations between fecal bacteria and fecal vitamin B, and these findings will contribute to the direction of future research in weaned piglets.

Montmorillonite facilitated Pb(II) biomineralization by Chlorella sorokiniana FK in soil

In this study, Chlorella sorokiniana FK, isolated from lead-zinc tailings, was employed for Pb(II) biomineralization with or without montmorillonite (MMT) addition in soil. Batch experiment results showed that montmorillonite facilitated Pb₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂ formation on the surface of Chlorella-MMT composite, thus increasing algal cells' tolerance to Pb(II) poisoning. Surprisingly, Pb(II) adsorbed and biomineralized by Chlorella-MMT composite was 2.69 times and 3.76 times as much as that by Chlorella alone, respectively. The montmorillonite facilitated Chlorella-induced Pb biomineralization by promoting both photosynthesis and urea hydrolysis, mainly due to more hydroxyl functional groups generated during its binding with Chlorella and its high pH buffering capacity. Moreover, the SEM-EDS analysis indicated that the biomineral particles shifted from algal cell surface to montmorillonite surface in the composite during long-term Pb-detoxification. In-situ soil Pb(II) remediation experiments with Chlorella-MMT composites further showed that Pb was immobilized as carbonate form in the short term and as residue fraction in the long term. This study made the first attempt to explore the facilitating effects of montmorillonite on metal-carbonate precipitation mediated by microalgae and to develop a green, sustainable, and effective strategy for immobilization of heavy metal in soil by combining clay minerals and microalgae.

A single domain i-body (AD-114) attenuates renal fibrosis through blockade of CXCR4

The G protein–coupled CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is a candidate therapeutic target for tissue fibrosis. A fully human single-domain antibody-like scaffold i-body AD-114-PA600 (AD-114) with specific high binding affinity to CXCR4 has been developed. To define its renoprotective role, AD-114 was administrated in a mouse model of renal fibrosis induced by folic acid (FA). Increased extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, macrophage infiltration, inflammatory response, TGF-β1 expression, and fibroblast activation were observed in kidneys of mice with FA-induced nephropathy. These markers were normalized or partially reversed by AD-114 treatment. In vitro studies demonstrated AD-114 blocked TGF-β1–induced upregulated expression of ECM, matrix metalloproteinase-2, and downstream p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathways in a renal proximal tubular cell line. Additionally, these renoprotective effects were validated in a second model of unilateral ureteral obstruction using a second generation of AD-114 (Fc-fused AD-114, also named AD-214). Collectively, these results suggest a renoprotective role of AD-114 as it inhibited the chemotactic function of CXCR4 as well as blocked CXCR4 downstream p38 MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling, which establish a therapeutic strategy for AD-114 targeting CXCR4 to limit renal fibrosis.

Expression of SATB1 is a prognostic indicator for survival in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients

OBJECTIVE

Special AT-rich Sequence-binding Protein-1 (SATB1) and Matrix Attachment Region-binding Protein were associated with high tumor stage, tumor recurrence, tumor-related death and indicating a poor prognosis. The association between SATB1 and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has been discussed controversially. Thence, this study anticipated probing the expression of SATB1 in DLBCL and the relationships with clinic pathological features and prognosis.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

180 cases of DLBCL tissues and 180 cases of chronic Lymphadenitis tissues in Para-carcinoma of DLBCL patients were collected in Guigang City People's Hospital, Guangxi, China, from August 2010 to December 2018. Here, the expression pattern of SATB1 in patients was examined by the method of streptomycin peroxides biotin (SP) immunohistochemical and analyzed the relationship of SATB1 with clinical pathological features and patient prognosis.

RESULTS

DLBCL carcinoma tissues expression SATB1 was significantly higher than chronic lymphadenitis tissues (p < 0.05), and the expression of SATB1 was not correlated with age, B symptoms and the ECOG status of patients (p> 0.05), but correlated with tumor stage, serum level of LDH, extranodal involvement, and IPI score (p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate analysis showed that SATB1 is an independent factor affecting progression-free survival time and overall survival time.

CONCLUSIONS

SATB1 participates in and affects the occurrence and development of DLBCL and influences their prognosis. It has broad prospects for improving prognosis evaluation, feasibility, molecular treatment intention and allocation of the most appropriate therapy.

Periodicities in the Daily Proton Fluxes from 2011 to 2019 Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station from 1 to 100 GV

We present the precision measurement of the daily proton fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 (a total of 2824 days or 114 Bartels rotations) in the rigidity interval from 1 to 100 GV based on 5.5×10^{9} protons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. The proton fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. From 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the 27-day periodicity is different from the rigidity dependences of 9-day and 13.5-day periods. Unexpectedly, the strength of 9-day and 13.5-day periodicities increases with increasing rigidities up to ∼10  GV and ∼20  GV, respectively. Then the strength of the periodicities decreases with increasing rigidity up to 100 GV.

Experimental Study on Solidification and Stabilization of Heavy-Metal-Contaminated Soil Using Cementitious Materials

In order to solve the shortcomings of the traditional curing agent in the treatment of composite heavy-metal-contaminated soil with the solidification and stabilization method, a new type of cementing material A was used as a curing agent, and the Pb, Cd, Cu composite heavy-metal-contaminated soil was artificially prepared to carry out an experimental study on solidification and stabilization (SS) restoration by the mechanical properties test, leaching performance test, and microscopic test. The results show that in the range of test dosage, with the increase in the curing agent content, the unconfined compressive strength of the solidified body increased, and the resistance to deformation was enhanced. From the perspective of leaching characteristics, the new curing agent A had an excellent curing effect on the composite heavy-metal-contaminated soil. To achieve safe disposal, a curing agent content of 10% applies only for the soil heavily contaminated by heavy metals. The curing agent A could significantly reduce the content of acid-extractable heavy metals after solidifying the heavy metal Pb, Cd, and Cu composite contaminated soil and effectively converted it into a residue state. The solidified phase contained hydrated products such as calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and ettringite (AFt). These hydrated products can inhibit the leaching performance of heavy metal ions through adsorption, encapsulation, and ion exchange. The study provides a feasible method and reference for the solidification, restoration, and resource utilization of heavy-metal-contaminated soil in the subgrade.

Properties of a New Group of Cosmic Nuclei: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on Sodium, Aluminum, and Nitrogen

We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na/Si and Al/Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036±0.003 for Na/Si and 0.103±0.004 for Al/Si, are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation.

Potential probiotics Lactobacillus casei K11 combined with plant extracts reduce markers of type 2 diabetes mellitus in mice

AIMS

Probiotics and plant extracts have been used to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study aimed to explore the effect of the interaction between potential probiotics and bitter gourd extract (BGE) or mulberry leaf extract (MLE) on T2DM.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Potential probiotics were tested for their gastrointestinal tract viability and growth situation combined with BGE and MLE in vitro. The diabetes model was constructed in C57BL/6 mice, and the potential effect and mechanism of regulating blood glucose were verified. Hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE), gas chromatography (GC), ELISA, and RT-PCR were also used for analysis. The results showed that Lactobacillus casei K11 had outstanding gastrointestinal tract viability and growth situation with plant extracts. Administration of L. casei K11 combined with BGE and MLE significantly reduced blood glucose levels and ameliorated insulin resistance in diabetic mice than the administration of Lactobacillus paracasei J5 combined with BGE and MLE. Moreover, in L. casei K11 combined with BGE and MLE groups, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory cytokine levels were regulated. Furthermore, the results indicated that L. casei K11 combined with BGE and MLE improved free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) upregulation, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings showed that L. casei K11 combined with BGE and MLE modified the SCFA-FFAR2-GLP-1 pathway to improve T2DM.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This study identified a new modality for evaluating interactions between potential probiotics and plant extracts. Our findings revealed that L. casei K11 combined with BGE and MLE significantly promoted the SCFA-FFAR2-GLP-1 pathway to inhibit T2DM.

Properties of Heavy Secondary Fluorine Cosmic Rays: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

Precise knowledge of the charge and rigidity dependence of the secondary cosmic ray fluxes and the secondary-to-primary flux ratios is essential in the understanding of cosmic ray propagation. We report the properties of heavy secondary cosmic ray fluorine F in the rigidity R range 2.15 GV to 2.9 TV based on 0.29 million events collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. The fluorine spectrum deviates from a single power law above 200 GV. The heavier secondary-to-primary F/Si flux ratio rigidity dependence is distinctly different from the lighter B/O (or B/C) rigidity dependence. In particular, above 10 GV, the F/Si/B/O ratio can be described by a power law R^{δ} with δ=0.052±0.007. This shows that the propagation properties of heavy cosmic rays, from F to Si, are different from those of light cosmic rays, from He to O, and that the secondary cosmic rays have two classes.

KCa3.1 Mediates Dysregulation of Mitochondrial Quality Control in Diabetic Kidney Disease

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease. Mitochondrial quality control is primarily mediated by mitochondrial turnover and repair through mitochondrial fission/fusion and mitophagy. We have previously shown that blockade of the calcium-activated potassium channel KCa3.1 ameliorates diabetic renal fibrosis. However, the mechanistic link between KCa3.1 and mitochondrial quality control in diabetic kidney disease is not yet known. Transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) plays a central role in diabetic kidney disease. Recent studies indicate an emerging role of TGF-β1 in the regulation of mitochondrial function. However, the molecular mechanism mediating mitochondrial quality control in response to TGF-β1 remains limited. In this study, mitochondrial function was assessed in TGF-β1-exposed renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK2 cells) transfected with scrambled siRNA or KCa3.1 siRNA. In vivo, diabetes was induced in KCa3.1+/+ and KCa3.1−/− mice by low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) injection. Mitochondrial fission/fusion-related proteins and mitophagy markers, as well as BCL2 interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) (a mitophagy regulator) were examined in HK2 cells and diabetic mice kidneys. The in vitro results showed that TGF-β1 significantly inhibited mitochondrial ATP production rate and increased mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) production when compared to control, which was normalized by KCa3.1 gene silencing. Increased fission and suppressed fusion were found in both TGF-β1-treated HK2 cells and diabetic mice, which were reversed by KCa3.1 deficiency. Furthermore, our results showed that mitophagy was inhibited in both in vitro and in vivo models of diabetic kidney disease. KCa3.1 deficiency restored abnormal mitophagy by inhibiting BNIP3 expression in TGF-β1-induced HK2 cells as well as in the diabetic mice. Collectively, these results indicate that KCa3.1 mediates the dysregulation of mitochondrial quality control in diabetic kidney disease.

Metformin Attenuates Renal Fibrosis in a Mouse Model of Adenine-Induced Renal Injury Through Inhibiting TGF-β1 Signaling Pathways

It is well-known that all progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD) is pathologically characterized by tubulointerstitial fibrosis process. Multiple studies have shown the critical role of inflammation and fibrosis in the development of CKD. Hence strategies that target inflammatory and fibrotic signaling pathways may provide promising opportunities to protect against renal fibrosis. Metformin has been used as the first-line glucose-lowering agent to treat patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) for over 50 years. Accumulating evidence suggests the potential for additional therapeutic applications of metformin, including mitigation of renal fibrosis. In this study, the anti-fibrotic effects of metformin independent of its glucose-lowering mechanism were examined in an adenine -induced mouse model of CKD. Expressions of inflammatory markers MCP-1, F4/80 and ICAM, fibrotic markers type IV collagen and fibronectin, and the cytokine TGF-β1 were increased in adenine-induced CKD when compared to control groups and significantly attenuated by metformin treatment. Moreover, treatment with metformin inhibited the phosphorylation of Smad3, ERK1/2, and P38 and was associated with activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in the kidneys of adenine-treated mice. These results indicate that metformin attenuates adenine-induced renal fibrosis through inhibition of TGF-β1 signaling pathways and activation of AMPK, independent of its glucose-lowering action.

Properties of Iron Primary Cosmic Rays: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62×10^{6} iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. Above 80.5 GV the rigidity dependence of the cosmic ray Fe flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of the primary cosmic ray He, C, and O fluxes, with the Fe/O flux ratio being constant at 0.155±0.006. This shows that unexpectedly Fe and He, C, and O belong to the same class of primary cosmic rays which is different from the primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si class.

Vertically stacked RGB LEDs with optimized distributed Bragg reflectors

The design and fabrication of a vertically stacked red-green-blue (RGB) light-emitting diode (LED) with novel, to the best of our knowledge, wavelength-selective distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) are demonstrated. The two DBRs are optimized to achieve selective reflectance in the RGB spectral region through theoretical calculations and simulation modeling. The insertion of optimal DBRs into the stack structure can effectively reflect downward emission from the upper chip without filtering the emission from the lower chips, thereby increasing the luminous efficiency for white emission with a color temperature range of 3000-8000 K by 1.6-7.4%. The optical performances of stacked devices with and without DBRs are thoroughly studied, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed wavelength-selective DBR structure.
