Abstract
INTRODUCTION Existing risk-scoring systems for cardiac surgery include only standard preoperative factors without considering nutritional and inflammatory status or intraoperative factors. The objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive prediction model for mortality incorporating nutritional, inflammatory, and perioperative factors in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective review of 2046 patients who underwent valvular heart surgery, Cox and LASSO regression analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic factors for 1-year postoperative mortality among various perioperative factors known to affect prognosis, including objective nutritional and inflammatory indices. A novel nomogram model incorporating selected prognostic factors was developed, and its discrimination ability was evaluated using the C-index. The model was validated in internal and external cohorts. RESULTS The 1-year mortality rate after valvular heart surgery was 5.1% (105 of 2046 patients) and was significantly associated with several preoperative objective inflammatory and nutritional indices. Cox and LASSO analyses identified the following five independent prognostic factors for mortality: monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (an objective inflammatory index), EuroSCORE II, Controlling Nutritional Status score, cardiopulmonary bypass time, and number of erythrocyte units transfused intraoperatively. The nomogram model incorporating these five factors had a C-index of 0.834 (95% CI: 0.791-0.877), which was higher than that of EuroSCORE II alone (0.744, 95% CI: 0.697-0.791) ( P <0.001). The nomogram achieved good discrimination ability, with C-indices of 0.836 (95% CI: 0.790-0.878) and 0.727 (95% CI: 0.651-0.803) in the internal and external validation cohorts, respectively, and showed well-fitted calibration curves. CONCLUSIONS A nomogram model incorporating five inflammatory, nutritional, and perioperative factors, as well as EuroSCORE II, was a better predictor of 1-year mortality after valvular heart surgery than EuroSCORE II alone, with good discrimination and calibration power for predicting mortality in both internal and external validation cohorts.

Abstract
Histone acetylation is a pivotal epigenetic modification that controls chromatin structure and regulates gene expression. It plays an essential role in modulating zygotic transcription and cell lineage specification of developing embryos. While the outcomes of many inductive signals have been described to require enzymatic activities of histone acetyltransferases and deacetylases (HDACs), the mechanisms by which HDACs confine the utilization of the zygotic genome remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that histone deacetylase 1 (Hdac1) progressively binds to the zygotic genome from mid blastula and onward. The recruitment of Hdac1 to the genome at blastula is instructed maternally. Cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) bound by Hdac1 possess epigenetic signatures underlying distinct functions. We highlight a dual function model of Hdac1 where Hdac1 not only represses gene expression by sustaining a histone hypoacetylation state on inactive chromatin, but also maintains gene expression through participating in dynamic histone acetylation-deacetylation cycles on active chromatin. As a result, Hdac1 maintains differential histone acetylation states of bound CRMs between different germ layers and reinforces the transcriptional program underlying cell lineage identities, both in time and space. Taken together, our study reveals a comprehensive role for Hdac1 during early vertebrate embryogenesis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 6 months after donation (eGFR6m) is strongly associated with the risk of end-stage renal disease in living kidney donors. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of eGFR6m <60 mL/min/1.73 m² (eGFR6m <60) and identify the risk factors that can predict the occurrence of eGFR6m <60 in living kidney donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Living kidney donors who underwent nephrectomy at Severance Hospital between January 2009 and December 2019 were identified. We excluded 94 of 1233 donors whose creatinine values at 6 months after donation were missing. The risk factors for eGFR6m <60 were assessed using multivariate regression analysis. The optimal cutoff points for candidate risk factors for predicting eGFR6m <60 occurrence were determined using the Youden index. RESULTS The eGFR6m <60 occurred in 17.3% of the participants. Older age (≥44 years), history of hypertension, lower preoperative eGFR (<101 mL/min/1.73 m²), and degree of increase in creatinine levels on postoperative day 2 compared to those before surgery (ΔCr2_pre) (≥0.39 mg/dL) increased the risk of eGFR6m <60. The addition of ΔCr2_pre to preoperative eGFR yielded a higher predictive accuracy for predicting eGFR6m <60 than that with preoperative eGFR alone {area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.886 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.863-0.908] vs. 0.862 (95% CI, 0.838-0.887), p<0.001}. CONCLUSION The incidence of eGFR6m <60 was 17.3%. Older age, lower preoperative eGFR, history of hypertension, and greater ΔCr2_pre were associated with the occurrence of eGFR6m <60 after living donor nephrectomy. The combination of preoperative eGFR and ΔCr2_pre showed the highest predictive power for eGFR6m <60.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is thought to increase cardiac contractility by increasing cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+ ]cyt ) during excitation. Alternatively, NO could increase the sensitivity of the contractile response to [Ca2+ ]cyt (Ca2+ sensitivity). Arginase regulates NO production by competing with NO synthase (NOS), and thus, arginase inhibition should increase cardiac contractility by increasing NO production. We hypothesized that arginase inhibition increases cardiac contractility by increasing both [Ca2+ ]cyt and Ca2+ sensitivity. [Ca2+ ]cyt and contractile (sarcomere length [SL] shortening) responses to electrical stimulation were measured simultaneously in isolated rat cardiomyocytes using an IonOptix system. In the same cardiomyocytes, measurements were obtained at baseline, following 3-min exposure to an arginase inhibitor (S-[2-boronoethyl]-l-cysteine; BEC) and following 3-min exposure to BEC plus a NOS inhibitor (NG -nitro-l-arginine-methyl ester; l-NAME). These responses were compared to time-matched control cardiomyocytes that were untreated. Compared to baseline, BEC increased the amplitude and the total amount of evoked [Ca2+ ]cyt , and the extent and velocity of SL shortening in cardiomyocytes, whereas addition of l-NAME mitigated these effects. The [Ca2+ ]cyt at 50% contraction and relaxation were not different across treatment groups indicating no effect of BEC on Ca2+ sensitivity. The [Ca2+ ]cyt and SL shortening responses in time-matched controls did not vary with time. Arginase inhibition by BEC significantly increased the amplitude and the total amount of evoked [Ca2+ ]cyt , and the extent and velocity of SL shortening in cardiomyocytes, but did not affect Ca2+ sensitivity. These effects of BEC were mitigated by l-NAME. Together, these results indicate an effect of NO on [Ca2+ ]cyt responses that then increase the contractile response of cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
Mesendodermal specification is one of the earliest events in embryogenesis, where cells first acquire distinct identities. Cell differentiation is a highly regulated process that involves the function of numerous transcription factors (TFs) and signaling molecules, which can be described with gene regulatory networks (GRNs). Cell differentiation GRNs are difficult to build because existing mechanistic methods are low throughput, and high-throughput methods tend to be non-mechanistic. Additionally, integrating highly dimensional data composed of more than two data types is challenging. Here, we use linked self-organizing maps to combine chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq)/ATAC-seq with temporal, spatial, and perturbation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data from Xenopus tropicalis mesendoderm development to build a high-resolution genome scale mechanistic GRN. We recover both known and previously unsuspected TF-DNA/TF-TF interactions validated through reporter assays. Our analysis provides insights into transcriptional regulation of early cell fate decisions and provides a general approach to building GRNs using highly dimensional multi-omic datasets.

Abstract
Objective Dexmedetomidine has sympatholytic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects and may exert anti-tumor effect by acting on α2A adrenoreceptor. We investigated whether perioperative dexmedetomidine preserves immune function in patients undergoing uterine cancer surgery. Methods One hundred patients were randomly assigned to the control or dexmedetomidine groups (50 patients each). Dexmedetomidine was infused at rates of 0.4 μg/kg/h intraoperatively and 0.15 μg/kg/h during the first 24 h postoperatively. The primary outcome was natural killer (NK) cell activity, which was measured preoperatively and 1, 3, and 5 days postoperatively. The inflammatory response was measured by interleukin-6, interferon-γ, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and pain scores and opioid consumption were assessed. Cancer recurrence or metastasis and death were evaluated 2 years postoperatively. Results NK cell activity decreased postoperatively in both groups and changes over time were not different between groups (P=0.496). Interferon-γ increased postoperatively in the dexmedetomidine group, whereas it maintained at the baseline value in the control group. Change in interferon-γ differed significantly between groups (P=0.003). Changes in interleukin-6 and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio were comparable between groups. Both pain score with activity during the first 1 h and opioid consumption during the first 1–24 h postoperatively were lower in the dexmedetomidine group. Rates of cancer recurrence/metastasis (16.3% vs. 8.7%, P=0.227) and death within 2 years postoperatively (6.7% vs. 2.2%, P=0.318) were not different between groups. Conclusions Perioperative dexmedetomidine had no favorable impacts on NK cell activity, inflammatory responses, or prognosis, whereas it increased interferon-γ and reduced early postoperative pain severity and opioid consumption in uterine cancer surgery patients.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine-disrupting chemical related to the carcinogenesis of estrogen-responsive organs. Although human exposure to BPA mainly occurs via the oral route, its association with colon cancer has not been fully elucidated. We investigated the effects of BPA on the proliferation, migration, and tumor growth of colon cancer cells. BPA significantly promoted the proliferation of HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. BPA also increased HT-29 cells migration. BPA increased the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and inhibition of the ERK pathway attenuated BPA-induced proliferation and migration. In addition, BPA reduced E-cadherin expression, a key factor impeding epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and increased 5-HT3 receptors expression, a major mitogenic factor. In xenograft models, tumor volume of the BPA-treated nude mice was 4.6 times that of the saline-treated group. Our findings provide primary evidence regarding the link between BPA and human colon cancer by demonstrating that BPA promotes the proliferation, migration, and tumor growth of colon cancer cells in both in vitro and in vivo models. In addition, we provided the mechanism of action of BPA, involved in the activation of the ERK pathway, the decrease in E-cadherin, and the increase in 5-HT3 receptors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ketamine's inhibitory action on the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor and anti-inflammatory effects may provide beneficial immunomodulation in cancer surgery. We investigated the effect of subanesthetic-dose ketamine as an adjunct to desflurane anesthesia on natural killer (NK) cell activity and inflammation in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS A total of 100 patients were randomly assigned to a control or ketamine group. The ketamine group received a bolus of 0.25 mg·kg-1 ketamine five minutes before the start of surgery, followed by an infusion 0.05 mg·kg-1·hr-1 until the end of surgery; the control group received a similar amount of normal saline. We measured NK cell activity and proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 [IL-6] and tumour necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) before surgery and one, 24, and 48 hr after surgery. C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured before surgery and one, three, and five days after surgery. Carcinoembryonic antigen and cancer recurrence/metastasis were assessed two years after surgery. RESULTS The NK cell activity was significantly decreased after surgery in both groups, but the change was not different between groups in the linear mixed model analysis (P = 0.47). Changes in IL-6, TNF-α, CRP, and carcinoembryonic antigen levels were not different between groups (P = 0.27, 0.69, 0.99, and 0.97, respectively). Cancer recurrence within 2 years after surgery was similar between groups (10% vs 8%, P = 0.62). CONCLUSIONS Intraoperative low-dose ketamine administration did not convey any favourable impacts on overall postoperative NK cell activity, inflammatory responses, and prognosis in colorectal cancer surgery patients. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Malnutrition is a well-recognized risk factor for poor prognosis and mortality. We investigated whether preoperative malnutrition diagnosed with objective nutritional scores affects 1-year mortality in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery. METHODS In this retrospective cohort observational study, we evaluated the association among the Controlling Nutritional Status score, Prognostic Nutritional Index, and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index with 1-year mortality in 1927 patients undergoing valvular heart surgery. We identified factors for mortality using multivariable Cox proportional hazard analysis and investigated the utility of nutritional scores for risk stratification. RESULTS Malnutrition, as identified by a high Controlling Nutritional Status score and low Prognostic Nutritional Index and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index, was significantly associated with higher 1-year mortality. Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed that mortality significantly increased as the severity of malnutrition increased (log-rank test, P < .001). The predicted discrimination (C-index) was 0.79 with the Controlling Nutritional Status score, 0.77 with the Prognostic Nutritional Index, and 0.73 with the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index. Each nutritional index (Controlling Nutritional Status; hazard ratio, 1.31, 95% confidence interval, 1.21-1.42, P < .001), the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (hazard ratio, 1.07, 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.09, P < .001), and chronic kidney disease (hazard ratio, 2.26, 95% confidence interval, 1.31-3.90, P = .003) were independent risk factors for mortality. The Controlling Nutritional Status score added to the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II significantly increased the predictive discrimination ability for mortality (C-index 0.82, 95% confidence interval, 0.78-0.87, P = .014) compared with the Controlling Nutritional Status or European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II alone. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative malnutrition as assessed by objective nutritional scores was associated with 1-year mortality after valvular heart surgery. The Controlling Nutritional Status score had the highest predictive ability and, when added to the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II, provided more accurate risk stratification.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neighborhood walkability has been found to be positively related to physical activity and negatively associated with risks of noncommunicable diseases. However, limited studies have examined its association with sarcopenia in older adults. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between neighborhood walk score and risks of sarcopenia in a sample of older Taiwanese adults. DESIGN AND SETTING This study was a cross-sectional investigation using telephone-based survey. PARTICIPANTS A nationwide telephone-based survey targeting older adults (≥ 65 years) was conducted in Taiwan. MEASUREMENTS Data on neighborhood walkability (determined by walk score of residential neighborhood), sarcopenia scores (measured by SARC-F), and personal characteristics were obtained. The relationships between walk score and risks of sarcopenia were examined using generalized additive models. RESULTS A total of 1,056 older adults participated in the survey. In model 1 (sex and age) and model 2 (full-adjusted model), a nonlinear association between neighborhood walk score and risks of sarcopenia was observed. Results showed that risks of sarcopenia appear to be lower in neighborhoods with a 40-walk score (Car-Dependent; most errands require a car) and an 80-walk score (Very Walkable) and highest in the neighborhood with a 60-walk score (Somewhat Walkable). CONCLUSIONS The study revealed a nonlinear relationship between neighborhood walkability and risks of sarcopenia in older adults in Asian context. Results provided information to urban designers and public health practitioners that more walkable neighborhood may not necessarily protect older adults from risks of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Information on the optimal conditions to promote the germination of Lamprocapnos spectabilis (L.) Fukuhara seeds is limited; consequently, this study was conducted to establish the requirements to break seed dormancy and promote germination. The selected seeds had morphophysiological dormancy and had not begun embryo development. To study the dormancy breaking and embryo development processes, seeds were subjected to constant or changing temperature treatments during moist stratification. High temperature and humidity resulted in vigorous embryo growth, with the longest embryos occurring after 1 month of incubation at 20 °C. At 4 °C, the seeds required incubation period of at least 3 months to germinate. Embryo growth and germination were higher with changing high and low temperatures than under a constant temperature, and changing temperatures also considerably changed the endogenous hormone levels, embryo development and germination. Bioactive gibberellin (GA) content was higher in seeds incubated at 20 °C for 1 month, then at 4 °C for 2 months. The content of endogenous abscisic acid in seeds subjected to the same treatment decreased by 97.6% compared with that of the untreated seeds. Embryo growth and seed germination require changing high and low temperatures; however, exogenous GA3 could substitute for high temperatures, as it also causes accelerated germination. In this study, the seeds of L. spectabilis were identified as an intermediate simple type, a sub-level of morphophysiologically dormant seeds.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Previous studies revealed that interventricular septal thickness is related to right ventricular dysfunction after anterior myocardial infarction. This finding suggest that interventricular septal function can affect right ventricular function in myocardial infarction patients. We assumed that right ventricular free wall strain values measured using dedicated software can be affected in the setting of ischemic insult on interventricular septum in long-term follow up.
Methods
The patients diagnosed as acute myocardial infarction due to left anterior descending artery disease who underwent successful revascularization were enrolled. Echocardiographic exams were performed at least 2 times, within 72 hours and 1 year after the revascularization. Strain values of interventricular septum and right ventricular free wall were derived from the raw-dicom images. The analysis was performed using the dedicated software for the measurement of right ventricular strain.
Results
Total 65 patients were enrolled. The values of global left ventricular strain were increased after the follow up. There were no changes in global longitudinal strain of the right ventricle. But longitudinal stain values acquired from right ventricular free walls were decreased even the strain values measured at left ventricle and interventricular septum were improved.
Conclusion
Interventricular septal dysfunction due to ischemic injury can affect long term right ventricular dysfunction. This finding suggests the interventricular dependence between cardiac chambers and can provide the development of heart failure in myocardial infarction patient even after the successful revascularization.

Abstract
Patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery and receiving postoperative analgesia with opioids have a high risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). We compared the antiemetic efficacy of three doses of ramosetron in this high-risk population. In this prospective, double-blind trial, 174 patients randomly received ramosetron 0.3 mg (R0.3 group; n = 58), 0.45 mg (R0.45 group; n = 58), or 0.6 mg (R0.6 group; n = 58) at the end of surgery. The primary outcome was the incidence of PONV during the first postoperative 48 h. Nausea severity, pain scores, adverse events, and patient satisfaction (1-4; 4, excellent) were assessed. The incidence of PONV was not different between groups (35%, 38%, and 35% in R0.3, R0.45, and R0.6 groups; p = 0.905). Nausea severity, pain scores, and incidence of adverse events (dizziness, headache, or sedation) were similar between groups. Compared to the R0.3 group, the R0.45 and R0.6 groups had lower incidence of premature discontinuation of fentanyl-based patient-controlled analgesia primarily because of intractable PONV (9% and 5% vs. 24%; p = 0.038), and higher satisfaction scores (3.4 ± 0.8 and 3.3 ± 0.7 vs. 2.4 ± 0.9; p = 0.005). Compared to ramosetron 0.3 mg, ramosetron 0.45 and 0.6 mg did not reduce PONV, but reduced premature discontinuation of patient-controlled analgesia and increased patient satisfaction, without increasing adverse events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains elusive in cardiac surgery. We investigated the association between postoperative AKI and CKD development, emphasizing the intermediary role of acute kidney disease (AKD), in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery. METHODS We assessed the occurrence of postoperative AKI (7 days postsurgery), AKD (3 months postsurgery), and CKD (12 months postsurgery) in 1386 patients. The primary outcome was the development of AKD and CKD according to AKI occurrence. Relevant risk factors of AKI, AKD, and CKD were identified through multivariable regression analysis. RESULTS AKI occurred in 23.9% of patients with normal preoperative renal function. Even with early recovery of renal function within 3 days, AKI increased the risk of AKD (odds ratio [OR], 3.21; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98-5.20, P < .001) and CKD (OR, 2.86; 95% CI, 1.68-4.86, P < .001), whereas persistent AKI further increased the risk of AKD (OR, 12.07; 95% CI, 5.56-26.21, P < .001) and CKD (OR, 10.54; 95% CI, 4.01-27.76, P < .001). We also found these relationships in patients with pre-existing renal dysfunction. Multivariable analysis identified 3-month postoperative heart failure and high right ventricular systolic pressure as independent risk factors for CKD. CONCLUSIONS Even after early recovery, postvalvular heart surgery AKI was associated with increased risk of CKD via AKD in a graded manner related to AKI severity and persistence. Postoperative cardiac dysfunction assessed 3 months postsurgery also significantly influenced CKD development, indicating a need for close follow-up of cardiac and renal function to improve patient outcomes.

This study was conducted to establish the optimal application conditions of barley straw biochar (BC) for rice cultivation and to determine the effects of combined application of BC and inorganic fertilizer (IF) on rice cultivation in a paddy field. Based on the characteristics of rice growth in pot-based experiments, the selected optimal application conditions of BC were application of 20 ton ha-1 at 14 days before rice transplanting. The effects of BC application on rice cultivation in a paddy field when using those conditions were then evaluated. Each treatment was separated by a control (Cn), IF, BC, and combined BC + IF treatments, respectively. The rice yields in the BC + IF treatment were 38.6, 21.7, and 24.5% greater than those in the Cn, IF, and BC treatments, respectively. In addition, yield components of rice were significantly improved in the BC + IF treatment relative to the other treatments. Following rice harvest, soil status was improved, showing greater soil aggregation stability, decreased bulk density, and increased porosity in the BC-treated areas compared to those in the Cn- and IF-treated areas. At the time of rice harvesting, soil chemical properties such as pH, EC, SOC, TN, Avail. P2O5, and CEC in the BC-treated areas were improved over those in other areas. The results of this study indicate that using BC as a soil amendment is effective at improving rice cultivation and can benefit the soil environment.

Abstract
Transcriptional regulatory elements are typically found in relatively nucleosome-free genomic regions, often referred to as "open chromatin." Deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) can digest nucleosome-depleted DNA (presumably bound by transcription factors), but DNA in nucleosomes or higher-order chromatin fibers is less accessible to the nuclease. The DNase-seq method uses high-throughput sequencing to permit the interrogation of DNase hypersensitive sites (DHSs) across the entire genome and does not require prior knowledge of histone modifications, transcription factor binding sites, or high quality antibodies to identify potentially active regions of chromatin. Here, discontinuous iodixanol gradients are used as a gentle preparation of the nuclei from Xenopus embryos. Short DNase I digestion times are followed by size selection of digested genomic DNA, yielding DHS fragments. These DNA fragments are subjected to real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and sequencing library construction. A library generation method and pipeline for analyzing DNase-seq data are also described.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although laparoscopic surgery significantly reduces surgical trauma compared to open surgery, postoperative ileus is a frequent and significant complication after abdominal surgery. Unlike laparoscopic colorectal surgery, the effects of epidural analgesia on postoperative recovery after laparoscopic gastrectomy are not well established. We compared the effects of epidural analgesia to those of conventional intravenous (IV) analgesia on the recovery of bowel function after laparoscopic gastrectomy. METHOD Eighty-six patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy randomly received either patient-controlled epidural analgesia with ropivacaine and fentanyl (Epi PCA group) or patient-controlled IV analgesia with fentanyl (IV PCA group), beginning immediately before incision and continuing for 48 h thereafter. The primary endpoint was recovery of bowel function, evaluated by the time to first flatus. The balance of the autonomic nervous system, pain scores, duration of postoperative hospital stay, and complications were assessed. RESULTS The time to first flatus was shorter in the epidural PCA group compared with the IV PCA group (61.3 ± 11.1 vs. 70.0 ± 12.3 h, P = 0.001). Low-frequency/high-frequency power ratios during surgery were significantly higher in the IV PCA group, compared with baseline and those in the epidural PCA group. The epidural PCA group had lower pain scores during the first 1 h postoperatively and required less analgesics during the first 6 h postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS Compared with IV PCA, epidural PCA facilitated postoperative recovery of bowel function after laparoscopic gastrectomy without increasing the length of hospital stay or PCA-related complications. This beneficial effect of epidural analgesia might be attributed to attenuation of sympathetic hyperactivation, improved analgesia, and reduced opioid use.

Abstract
The interplay between transcription factors and chromatin dictates gene regulatory network activity. Germ layer specification is tightly coupled with zygotic gene activation and, in most metazoans, is dependent upon maternal factors. We explore the dynamic genome-wide interactions of Foxh1, a maternal transcription factor that mediates Nodal/TGF-β signaling, with cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) during mesendodermal specification. Foxh1 marks CRMs during cleavage stages and recruits the co-repressor Tle/Groucho in the early blastula. We highlight a population of CRMs that are continuously occupied by Foxh1 and show that they are marked by H3K4me1, Ep300, and Fox/Sox/Smad motifs, suggesting interplay between these factors in gene regulation. We also propose a molecular "hand-off" between maternal Foxh1 and zygotic Foxa at these CRMs to maintain enhancer activation. Our findings suggest that Foxh1 functions at the top of a hierarchy of interactions by marking developmental genes for activation, beginning with the onset of zygotic gene expression.

Abstract
Background Patients with infective endocarditis (IE) have an elevated risk of renal dysfunction because of extensive systemic inflammation and use of nephrotoxic antibiotics. In this randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we investigated whether perioperative sodium bicarbonate administration could attenuate postoperative renal dysfunction in patients with IE undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods Seventy patients randomly received sodium chloride (n = 35) or sodium bicarbonate (n = 35). Sodium bicarbonate was administered as a 0.5 mmol/kg loading dose for 1 h commencing with anesthetic induction, followed by a 0.15 mmol/kg/h infusion for 23 h. The primary outcome was peak serum creatinine (SCr) level during the first 48 h postoperatively. The incidence of acute kidney injury, SCr level, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and major morbidity endpoints were assessed postoperatively. Results The peak SCr during the first 48 h postoperatively (bicarbonate vs. control: 1.01 (0.74, 1.37) mg/dl vs. 0.88 (0.76, 1.27) mg/dl, P = 0.474) and the incidence of acute kidney injury (bicarbonate vs. control: 29% vs. 23%, P = 0.584) were similar in both groups. The postoperative increase in SCr above baseline was greater in the bicarbonate group than in the control group on postoperative day 2 (0.21 (0.07, 0.33) mg/dl vs. 0.06 (0.00, 0.23) mg/dl, P = 0.028) and postoperative day 5 (0.23 (0.08, 0.36) mg/dl vs. 0.06 (0.00, 0.23) mg/dl, P = 0.017). Conclusions Perioperative sodium bicarbonate administration had no favorable impact on postoperative renal function and outcomes in patients with IE undergoing cardiac surgery. Instead, it was associated with possibly harmful renal effects, illustrated by a greater increase in SCr postoperatively, compared to control. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01920126. Abstract
Introduction: Perioperative anesthesia and analgesia exacerbate immunosuppression in immunocompromised cancer patients. The natural killer (NK) cell is a critical part of anti-tumor immunity. We compared the effects of two different anesthesia and analgesia methods on the NK cell cytotoxicity (NKCC) in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. Methods: Fifty patients undergoing breast cancer resection were randomly assigned to receive propofol-remifentanil anesthesia with postoperative ketorolac analgesia (Propofol-ketorolac groups) or sevoflurane-remifentanil anesthesia with postoperative fentanyl analgesia (Sevoflurane-fentanyl group). The primary outcome was NKCC, which was measured before and 24 h after surgery. Post-surgical pain scores and inflammatory responses measured by white blood cell, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts were assessed. Cancer recurrence or metastasis was evaluated with ultrasound and whole body bone scan every 6 months for 2 years after surgery. Results: The baseline NKCC (%) was comparable between the two groups (P = 0.082). Compared with the baseline value, NKCC (%) increased in the Propofol-ketorolac group [15.2 (3.2) to 20.1 (3.5), P = 0.048], whereas it decreased in the Sevoflurane-fentanyl group [19.5 (2.8) to 16.4 (1.9), P = 0.032]. The change of NKCC over time was significantly different between the groups (P = 0.048). Pain scores during 48 h after surgery and post-surgical inflammatory responses were comparable between the groups. One patient in the Sevoflurane-fentanyl group had recurrence in the contralateral breast and no metastasis was found in either group. Conclusions: Propofol anesthesia with postoperative ketorolac analgesia demonstrated a favorable impact on immune function by preserving NKCC compared with sevoflurane anesthesia and postoperative fentanyl analgesia in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.

Abstract
Sympathetic hyperactivation during tracheal intubation prolongs the QT interval and increases the risk of arrhythmias. We investigated if dexmedetomidine pretreatment affected autonomic nervous system balance and QT intervals during intubation. Sixty-six patients were randomized to receive 1.0 μg/kg fentanyl (group F, n = 22), 0.5 μg/kg dexmedetomidine (group D0.5, n = 22), or 1.0 μg/kg dexmedetomidine (group D1.0, n = 22) before induction. Autonomic nervous system balance was assessed by the ratio of low-frequency/high-frequency (LF/HF) power for heart rate variability at baseline (T0), before intubation (T1), and after intubation (T2). QT intervals were corrected by the Bazett's formula (QTc) and compared at baseline, before intubation, and 1, 2, and 3 minutes after intubation. The LF/HF ratio was higher after intubation compared with that at T0 in group F (P < 0.001). There were no significant changes in groups D0.5 and D1.0. The LF/HF ratio was significantly higher in group F compared with those in groups D0.5 and D1.0 after intubation (7.9 vs. 2.1 and 2.5; P < 0.001). The heart rate was increased for 3 minutes after intubation in group F, whereas only for 1 minute after intubation in groups D0.5 and D1.0, compared with that at baseline. More patients in group F had QTc greater than 440 ms compared with that in group D0.5 or D1.0 (8 vs. 1 and 2; P = 0.005) at 1 minute after intubation. In contrast to 1.0 μg/kg fentanyl, pretreatment with 0.5 or 1.0 μg/kg dexmedetomidine suppressed sympathetic hyperactivity and attenuated QTc prolongation during intubation.

Abstract
The phosphorus (P) adsorption characteristic of sesame straw biochar prepared with different activation agents and pyrolysis temperatures was evaluated. Between 0.109 and 0.300 mg L(-1) in the form of inorganic phosphate was released from raw sesame straw biochar in the first 1 h. The release of phosphate was significantly enhanced from 62.6 to 168.2 mg g(-1) as the pyrolysis temperature increased. Therefore, sesame straw biochar cannot be used as an adsorbent for P removal without change in the physicochemical characteristics. To increase the P adsorption of biochar in aqueous solution, various activation agents and pyrolysis temperatures were applied. The amount of P adsorbed from aqueous solution by biochar activated using different activation agents appeared in the order ZnCl2 (9.675 mg g(-1)) > MgO (8.669 mg g(-1)) ⋙ 0.1N-HCl > 0.1N-H2SO4 > K2SO4 ≥ KOH ≥ 0.1N-H3PO4, showing ZnCl2 to be the optimum activation agent. Higher P was adsorbed by the biochar activated using ZnCl2 under different pyrolysis temperatures in the order 600 °C > 500 °C > 400 °C > 300 °C. Finally, the amount of adsorbed P by activated biochar at different ratios of biochar to ZnCl2 appeared in the order 1:3 ≒ 1:1 > 3:1. As a result, the optimum ratio of biochar to ZnCl2 and pyrolysis temperature were found to be 1:1 and 600 °C for P adsorption, respectively. The maximum P adsorption capacity by activated biochar using ZnCl2 (15,460 mg kg(-1)) was higher than that of typical biochar, as determined by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Therefore, the ZnCl2 activation of sesame straw biochar was suitable for the preparation of activated biochar for P adsorption.

Abstract
Spray-drying and the nanoscale Kirkendall diffusion process are used to prepare nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite powders with excellent Na-ion storage properties. Metallic Ni nanopowder-decorated rGO powders, formed as intermediate products, are transformed into composite powders of nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/rGO with mixed crystal structures of Ni3S2 and Ni9S8 phases by the sulfidation process under H2S gas. Nickel sulfide/rGO composite powders with the main crystal structure of Ni3S2 are also prepared as comparison samples by the direct sulfidation of nickel acetate-graphene oxide (GO) composite powders obtained by spray-drying. In electrochemical properties, the discharge capacities at the 150(th) cycle of the nickel sulfide/rGO composite powders prepared by sulfidation of the Ni/rGO composite and nickel acetate/GO composite powders at a current density of 0.3 A g(-1) are 449 and 363 mA h g(-1), respectively; their capacity retentions, calculated from the tenth cycle, are 100 and 87%. The nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/rGO composite powders possess structural stability over repeated Na-ion insertion and extraction processes, and also show excellent rate performance for Na-ion storage.

Abstract
Background Pneumoperitoneum-induced oxidative stress and organ injury are known to be associated with nitric oxide (NO) inactivation. Because arginase competes with NO synthase (NOS) for a common substrate, L-arginine, arginase inhibition may increase NO bioavailability. Therefore, we evaluated the ability of the arginase inhibitor, 2 (S)-amino-6-boronohexanoic acid (ABH), to attenuate pneumoperitoneum-induced decrease of NO bioavailability and lung injury. Methods Thirty rats were randomly divided into the following groups: 1) the PP-ABH group received a subcutaneous injection of ABH (5 mg/kg) 1 h before induction of pneumoperitoneum (insufflation to intraperitoneal pressure of 15 mmHg for 60 min); 2) the PP group received saline by subcutaneous injection 1 h before induction of pneumoperitoneum; and 3) the control group received saline by subcutaneous injection before a sham procedure with no gas insufflation. After desufflation, blood was collected to determine levels of plasma nitrite, NOS, inflammatory cytokines, and malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress. Lung tissue was obtained for histological evaluation. Results We found that plasma nitrite levels were lower in the PP group and higher in the PP-ABH group, compared with controls (P <0.01 and P <0.05, respectively). In the PP group, endothelial NOS activity was decreased and inducible NOS activity was increased compared with the PP-ABH and control groups. Malondialdehyde levels increased 3-fold in the PP group and 2-fold in the PP-ABH group compared with controls. Tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1ß levels were elevated in the PP group compared to the control group, but the increase in cytokine production was attenuated or blocked in the PP-ABH group. Lung injury scores were 4.8-fold higher in the PP group and 2-fold higher in the PP-ABH group compared with controls (P <0.001 and P <0.01, respectively). Discussion Pneumoperitoneum decreases NO bioavailability and increases the inflammation cytokines, resulting in organ injuries. Inhibition of arginase activity could maintain NO bioavailability by attenuating pneumoperitoneum-induced changes in NOS activity. In addition, arginase inhibition attenuated the oxidative stress and inflammation and decreased the severity of lung injury caused by pneumoperitoneum. Conclusions By increasing NO bioavailability and suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation, pretreatment with an arginase inhibitor may protect against lung injury caused by pneumoperitoneum.

Abstract
Sympathetic hyperactivation is one of the causes of postoperative ileus, which occurs frequently after abdominal surgery and adversely influences the patient's prognosis. We aimed to investigate whether dexmedetomidine (DEX) could attenuate postoperative ileus in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy. Ninety-two patients were randomized to the control (n = 46) or DEX group (n = 46). DEX was administered at a loading dose of 0.5 μg/kg for 10 minutes, followed by an infusion rate of 0.4 μg/kg/h from insufflation of the pneumoperitoneum to the end of surgery. The primary goal was to compare postoperative bowel movements by evaluating the time to first flatus. The balance of the autonomic nervous system, duration of postoperative hospital stay, and pain scores were assessed. The time to first flatus was shorter in the DEX group compared with the control group (67.2 ± 16.8 hours vs 79.9 ± 15.9 hours, P < 0.001). The low-frequency/high-frequency power ratio during pneumoperitoneum increased in the control group, compared with baseline values and the DEX group. The length of postoperative hospital stay was shorter in the DEX group compared with the control group (5.4 ± 0.7 days vs 5.8 ± 1.1 days, P = 0.04). Patients in the DEX group had lower pain scores and required fewer analgesics at 1 hour postoperatively. DEX facilitated bowel movements and reduced the length of hospital stay in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy. This may be attributed to the sympatholytic and opioid-sparing effects of DEX.

Abstract
Background Contrast medium used for radiologic tests can decrease renal function. However there have been few studies on contrast-associated acute kidney injury in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and outcome of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) patients using the Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, and End-stage kidney disease (RIFLE) criteria in critically ill patients in the ICU. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of adult patients who underwent contrast-enhanced radiologic tests from January 2011 to December 2012 in a 30-bed medical ICU and a 24-bed surgical ICU. Results The study included 335 patients, and the incidence of CA-AKI was 15.5%. The serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate values in the CA-AKI patients did not recover even at discharge from the hospital compared with the values prior to the contrast use. Among 52 CA-AKI patients, 55.8% (n = 29) had pre-existing kidney injury and 44.2% (n = 23) did not. The CA-AKI patients were divided into risk (31%), injury (31%), and failure (38%) by the RIFLE classification. The percentage of patients in whom AKI progressed to a more severe form (failure, loss, end-stage kidney disease) increased from 38% to 45% during the hospital stay, and the recovery rate of AKI was 17% at the time of hospital discharge. Because the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score was the only significant variable inducing CA-AKI, higher APACHE II scores were associated with a higher risk of CA-AKI. The ICU and hospital mortality of patients with CA-AKI was significantly higher than in patients without CA-AKI. Conclusions CA-AKI is associated with increases in hospital mortality, and can be predicted by the APACHE score. Trial registration NCT01807195 on March. 06. 2013.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tendinopathy is a clinical problem for which treatment shows mixed results and treatment options are limited. Gene expression signatures early in the mechanotransduction pathway can accurately predict risk and correlate with different clinical outcomes. Studies aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms of tendinopathy have focused on small cohorts of genes that show an incomplete picture of the degeneration process. This study compared the effect of cyclic strain on gene expression in tendon cells from normal tendon and chronically painful areas of tendinopathy in 3 patients. METHODS We measured a panel of mechanotransduction genes and cytoskeletal tensional balance with and without cyclic strain, which disrupts connective tissue synthetic-degradative equilibrium. Normal and degenerative tendons were obtained from patients undergoing surgery to treat chronic painful tendinopathy. A cyclic strain model was established to measure cytoskeletal tensional homeostasis. RESULTS Prior to cyclic strain, the normal tendon cells exhibited varying patterns of elevated expression of 7 genes compared with degenerative tendon cells. In response to cyclic strain, gene expression of COL1A1, ITGA6, CTNNA1, and CLEC3B was up-regulated in normal tendon cells. Cyclic strain had no effect on degenerative tendon cells. Cyclic strain exacerbated the inhibition of protein synthesis in both cell types, especially in the degenerative tendon cells. CONCLUSION Alterations in the pattern of gene expression are suggestive of a dynamic equilibrium between synthesis and degradation, whereby cell adhesion molecules are predominantly up-regulated to facilitate cellular reorientation in response to their altered functional environment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These data might have future applications, including the identification of markers for early diagnosis, targets for drug design, and indicators for treatment responsiveness and prognosis.

Background: Metastasis-associated in colon cancer 1 (MACC1) plays a role in cancer invasion and metastasis through the upregulation of hepatocyte growth factor/mesenchymal epithelial transition-pathway, which is a known critical regulator of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades. However, the potential involvement of MACC1 in breast cancer has not been assessed.
Materials and Methods: To investigate whether MACC1 expression is a prognostic marker in breast cancer, we performed immunohistochemical staining for MACC1 expression in tissue microarrays consisting of 198 invasive breast carcinomas. To demonstrate the potential correlation between MACC1 and MAPK cascades, phospho-p44/42 MAPK (ERK1/2) expression was also analyzed.
Results: Expression of MACC1 was detected in 109 (55.1%) of 198 invasive breast carcinomas. MACC1 expression was significantly associated with several clinicopathologic parameters, including ER negativity (P < 0.01), PR negativity (p < 0.01), and HER-2 positivity (p < 0.01). The rate of metastatic relapse was significantly higher in the MACC1-positive group (87.8%, 36/41) than in the MACC1-negative group (46.5%, 73/157) (p < 0.001). MACC1 expression was significantly correlated with phospho-p44/42 MAPK expression (p < 0.05). On univariate survival analysis, a significant association was observed between MACC1 expression and decreased disease-free survival (p < 0.001) and overall survival (p = 0.001). On multivariate analysis, MACC1 expression was one of the statistically significant independent risk factors for disease-free survival (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Our results suggest that MACC1 may serve as a new parameter for the prognostic prediction in patients with invasive breast carcinoma. MACC1 is likely to be involved in the regulation of MAPK cascades in invasive breast carcinoma.

Abstract
Background The accentuated nitric oxide (NO) release that is induced by the systemic inflammatory response associated with infective endocarditis (IE) and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may result in catecholamine refractory hypotension (vasoplegia) and increased transfusion requirement due to platelet inhibition. Methylene blue (MB) is an inhibitory drug of inducible NO. We aimed to evaluate the effect of prophylactic MB administration before CPB on vasopressor and transfusion requirements in patients with IE undergoing valvular heart surgery (VHS). Methods Forty-two adult patients were randomly assigned to receive 2 mg/kg of MB (MB group, n = 21) or saline (control group, n = 21) for 20 min before the initiation of CPB. The primary end points were comparisons of vasopressor requirements serially assessed after weaning from CPB and hemodynamic parameters serially recorded before and after CPB. The secondary endpoint was the comparison of transfusion requirements. Results Two patients in the control group received MB after weaning from CPB due to norepinephrine and vasopressin refractory vasoplegia and were thus excluded. There were no significant differences in vasopressor requirements and hemodynamic parameters between the two groups. The mean number of units of packed erythrocytes transfused per transfused patient was significantly less in the MB group. The numbers of patients transfused with fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrates were less in the MB group. Conclusions In IE patients undergoing VHS, prophylactic MB administration before CPB did not confer significant benefits in terms of vasopressor requirements and hemodynamic parameters, but it was associated with a significant reduction in transfusion requirement.

Abstract
Ohtahara syndrome (OS) is a rare epileptic encephalopathy that is characterized by an abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) and intractable seizures in the neonatal and early infantile period. The patient of this reported case was delivered normally at 39 weeks of gestation without any complication. One week after birth, seizures that were refractory to anticonvulsants started with repetitive clustered tonic spasms. The child had no abnormal findings on the initial laboratory investigations. But he was diagnosed with OS according to the frequent tonic spasms, an abnormal EEG pattern of suppression-burst and magnetic resonance imaging of cortical dysplasia. He was planned to undergo an operation for brain lesion. This report describes our experience with the general anesthetic management when we performed craniotomy and right hemispherotomy for a patient with OS.

Abstract
Several cases of accidental subdural injection have been reported, but only few of them are known to be accidental intradural injection during epidural block. Therefore we would like to report our experience of accidental intradural injection. A 68-year-old female was referred to our pain clinic due to severe metastatic spinal pain. We performed a diagnostic epidural injection at T9/10 interspace under the C-arm guided X-ray view. Unlike the usual process of block, onset was delayed and sensory dermatomes were irregular range. We found out a dense collection of localized radio-opaque contrast media on the reviewed X-ray findings. These are characteristic of intradural injection and clearly different from the narrow wispy bands of contrast in the subdural space.

Abstract
The abnormal phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin have been shown to perform a crucial function in the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The primary objective of the current study was to determine the manner in which overexpressed htau23 interacts and regulates the behavior and phosphorylation characteristics of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin. In order to accomplish this, transgenic mice expressing neuron-specific enolase (NSE)-controlled human wild-type tau (NSE/htau23) were created. Transgenic mice evidenced the following: (i) tendency toward memory impairments at later stages, (ii) dramatic overexpression of the tau transgene, coupled with increased tau phosphorylation and paired helical filaments (PHFs), (iii) high levels of GSK3beta phosphorylation with advanced age, resulting in increases in the phosphorylations of tau and beta-catenin, (iv) an inhibitory effect of lithium on the phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin, but not in the non-transgenic littermate group. Therefore, the overexpression of NSE/htau23 in the brains of transgenic mice induces abnormal phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin, which are ultimately linked to neuronal degeneration in cases of AD. These transgenic mice are expected to prove useful for the development of new drugs for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
A human androgen response element (hARE), identified within intron 8 of the human sterol regulatory element-binding protein cleavage-activating protein, interacts with both glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and androgen receptors (AR). The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that human GR (hGR) might modulate the expression of a hARE-linked reporter gene by dexamethasone (Dex). The hypothesis was tested by: a) co-transfecting HepG2 cells with a hGR and a luciferase (Luc)-reporter gene for performing in vitro investigations and b) by their co-injection into the tail vein of mice for in vivo investigation. In vitro co-transfected cells and the in vivo co-injected mice were then treated with Dex. Our results have led us to concluded that both transfection and injection of the hGR leads to a repression in the Dex-mediated induction of hARE-linked Luc activity both in vitro and in vivo settings. These findings suggest that this assay system allows screening of drug candidates affecting to a signal transduction pathway of the GR and AR and may help in the future discovery and analysis of novel and selection of GR and AR agonists.

Abstract
To treat cutting oil wastewater produced in metal surface treatment industry, Ultrasonication (US)-Fenton process, which is one of the advanced oxidation processes, was used. The optimum conditions to treat non-biodegradable pollutants using the US-Fenton process were that the application rates of H2O2 and FeSO4 were 10% and 3 g/L, respectively, the value of pH was 3, and the ultrasonication time was 30 min. It identified non-degradable pollutants such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) in the cutting oil wastewater. TLC analysis of two compounds of treated water by the coagulation process was similar to that of raw water. However, TLC analysis of two compounds of US-Fenton process was different from that of raw water, meaning that US-Fenton process decomposed the EDTA and TEA. To study the possibility of application with the US-Fenton process to pilot plant, the pollutants treatment efficiency of three different methods, such as US-Fenton process, activated sludge process and coagulation process, in continuous experiments were compared. The removal rate of pollutants by the US-Fenton process according to the effluent time was higher than any other processes. The removal rates of COD, SS, T-N and T-P by US-Fenton process were 98, 93, 75 and 95%, respectively.

Abstract
A heavy metal resistant bacterium Bacillus spp. strain CPB4 was isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil in Korea and further characterised. The CPB4 strain showed a high capacity for uptake of heavy metal Pb (Pb > Cd > Cu > Ni > Co > Mn > Cr > Zn) both in single and in mixed heavy metal solution. Optimal conditions for heavy metal uptakes of CPB4 strain were 20-40 degrees C culture temperature, 5-7 pH and 24 h pre-culture times. TEM showed that large amounts of the electron-dense granules (heavy metal complexes) were found mainly on the cell wall and cell membrane. Furthermore, more than 90% of adsorbed heavy metals were distributed both in cell wall and in cell membrane fractions. The amount of heavy metal uptake was remarkably decreased by reducing the crude protein contents when cells were treated by alkali solutions. Therefore, this study showed one of the possible examples for useful bioremediation.

Abstract
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid, and has evidenced anti-cancer activities in experimental animal cancer models and in vitro studies. The two predominant isomers of CLA are cis-9,trans-11 CLA (c9t11) and trans-10,cis-12 CLA (t10c12). The present study was performed to study the effect of the individual CLA isomers on DU145 cell growth. The cells were incubated in serum-free medium with different concentrations of the fatty acids. Treatment of cells with t10c12 (at 2.5-10 micromol/L) resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in the numbers of viable cells, whereas c9t11 CLA at a concentration of 5 micromol/L slightly increased viable cell numbers at 3 days (P < .05). DNA flow cytometric analysis revealed that the treatment of DU145 cells with t10c12 for 24 hours induced a small but significant increase in the number of cells in the G1 phase, accompanied by a complementary decrease in cells in the S phase. c9t, however, had no effect on cell cycle progression. To determine the molecular mechanisms underlying t10c12-induced G1 arrest, the levels of cell cycle regulatory proteins were estimated by western blot analyses. t10c12 induced a marked increase in p21(CIP1/WAF1) protein levels in a dose-dependent manner. p27(KIP1) was not affected by t10c12. t10c12 moderately decreased cyclin A and cyclin D1 protein levels (P > .05). However, t10c12 did not affect the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 2, CDK4, or cyclin E. t10c12 increased p21(CIP1/WAF1) bound to CDK2 and attenuated CDK2 activity. These results indicate that t10c12-induced p21(CIP1/WAF1) binds to CDK, and inhibits the activity of this enzyme, which results in the observed decrease in the G1-S progression in DU145 cells.

Abstract
Time spectra of neutron and sonoluminescence emissions were measured in cavitation experiments with chilled deuterated acetone. Statistically significant neutron and gamma ray emissions were measured with a calibrated liquid-scintillation detector, and sonoluminescence emissions were measured with a photomultiplier tube. The neutron and sonoluminescence emissions were found to be time correlated over the time of significant bubble cluster dynamics. The neutron emission energy was less than 2.5 MeV and the neutron emission rate was up to approximately 4 x 10(5) n/s. Measurements of tritium production were also performed and these data implied a neutron emission rate due to D-D fusion which agreed with what was measured. In contrast, control experiments using normal acetone did not result in statistically significant tritium activity, or neutron or gamma ray emissions.

Abstract
In this paper, we present the first measurement of radon concentrations in drinking groundwater from private and public deep-bored wells located in the south-eastern area of Korea. The measurements were carried out on 439 samples by using a liquid scintillation method. The results show that the radon concentrations of the samples range from 0 to about 300 Bq l(-1). We find that Sasang ward shows the highest median value of radon concentration among 13 different wards, while Jung ward has the lowest. We find that the radon concentrations are highly dependent on the type of geological rock aquifers.
