Abstract
In visual environments, selective attention must be employed to focus on task-relevant stimuli. A key question here concerns the extent to which other stimuli within the visual field influence target processing. In this study, we ask whether face identity matching is subject to similar effects from irrelevant stimuli in the visual field, specifically task-irrelevant people. Although most previous studies rely on highly controlled face and body stimuli presented in isolation, here we use a more realistic environment. Participants take the role of passport officers and must match a person's face to their photo-ID, while other people appear in the background, waiting to be processed. Presenting an interactive virtual environment on screen (Experiments 1 and 2) or in immersive VR (Experiment 3), we generally found no evidence for distraction from background people on face-matching accuracy. However, when immersed in VR, an angry crowd in the background delayed matching speed while not affecting accuracy. We discuss the theoretical implications of these results and their potential importance in practical settings.

Abstract
Subtropical oceans contribute significantly to global primary production, but the fate of the picophytoplankton that dominate in these low-nutrient regions is poorly understood. Working in the subtropical Mediterranean, we demonstrate that subduction of water at ocean fronts generates 3D intrusions with uncharacteristically high carbon, chlorophyll, and oxygen that extend below the sunlit photic zone into the dark ocean. These contain fresh picophytoplankton assemblages that resemble the photic-zone regions where the water originated. Intrusions propagate depth-dependent seasonal variations in microbial assemblages into the ocean interior. Strikingly, the intrusions included dominant biomass contributions from nonphotosynthetic bacteria and enrichment of enigmatic heterotrophic bacterial lineages. Thus, the intrusions not only deliver material that differs in composition and nutritional character from sinking detrital particles, but also drive shifts in bacterial community composition, organic matter processing, and interactions between surface and deep communities. Modeling efforts paired with global observations demonstrate that subduction can flux similar magnitudes of particulate organic carbon as sinking export, but is not accounted for in current export estimates and carbon cycle models. Intrusions formed by subduction are a particularly important mechanism for enhancing connectivity between surface and upper mesopelagic ecosystems in stratified subtropical ocean environments that are expanding due to the warming climate.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Activation of muscles during standing is recommended to activate the skeletal muscle pump, increasing venous return and increasing blood pressure (BP) in people with orthostatic hypotension (OH). AIM The aim of this study is to determine if increasing the strength of the lower limb muscles can improve the effectiveness of the venous pump and postural BP in older people with OH. METHODS Ten older people with OH underwent an 8-week lower limb strengthening intervention. Repeated measurements of orthostatic BP, calf venous ejection fraction (EF) and muscle strength took place before, during and after intervention. RESULTS The intervention increased calf muscle strength by 21% (interquartile range: 18-28), p = 0.018, from a median baseline of 38 (34-45) kg. Participants had normal levels of venous EF 64% (51-75) at baseline, with little to no venous reflux. The median ejection volume at baseline was 44 (36-58) mL per calf. Despite increasing muscle strength, venous EF did not increase (percentage change -10% (-16 to 24), p = 0.8) and systolic BP drop did not improve (percentage change 0% (-17 to 16), p = 1.0). Similarly, visual analysis of individual case-series trends revealed increasing muscle strength with no clinically meaningful change in EF or orthostatic BP. CONCLUSIONS Muscle strengthening exercise does not increase the effectiveness of the skeletal muscle pump and is not an efficacious intervention for OH. As there is little to no venous pooling in the calf during standing in older people with OH, below knee compression is unlikely to be clinically effective.

Abstract
The dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) has fundamental roles in voluntary movement and memory and is a validated drug target for neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. However, previously developed D1R selective agonists possess a catechol moiety which displays poor pharmacokinetic properties. The first selective non-catechol D1R agonists were recently discovered and unexpectedly many of these ligands showed G protein biased signaling. Here, we investigate both catechol and non-catechol D1R agonists to validate potential biased signaling and examine if this impacts agonist-induced D1R endocytosis. We determined that most, but not all, non-catechol agonists display G protein biased signaling at the D1R and have reduced or absent Beta-arrestin recruitment. A notable exception was compound (Cmpd) 19, a non-catechol agonist with full efficacy at both D1R-G protein or D1R Beta-arrestin pathways. In addition, the catechol ligand A-77636 was a highly potent, super agonist for D1R Beta-arrestin activity. When examined for agonist-induced D1R endocytosis, balanced agonists SKF-81297 and Cmpd 19 induced robust D1R endocytosis while the G protein biased agonists did not. The Beta-arrestin super agonist, A-77636, showed significantly increased D1R endocytosis. Moreover, Beta-arrestin recruitment efficacy of tested agonists strongly correlated with total D1R endocytosis. Taken together, these results indicate the degree of D1R signaling functional selectivity profoundly impacts D1R endocytosis regardless of pharmacophore. The range of functional selectivity of these D1R agonists will provide valuable tools to further investigate D1R signaling, trafficking and therapeutic potential.

Abstract
In our previous publication, we reported a framework to develop an undergraduate cancer research training program at Florida A&M University (FAMU) under the umbrella of the Florida-California Cancer Research, Education, and Engagement (CaRE2) Health Equity Center activity by harnessing the resources available at FAMU, the University of Florida (UF), and the University of Southern California (USC) Cancer Centers. The implementation of the CaRE2 face-to-face training platform was dramatically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic during the summer of 2020 and 2021 training periods. However, a concerted effort was made to restructure the face-to-face training model into virtual and hybrid training methods to maintain the continuity of the program during the pandemic. This article compared the three methods to identify the best platform for training URM students in cancer disparity research. The program's effectiveness was measured through motivation, experiences, and knowledge gained by trainees during and one year after the completion of the program. The results showed that the participants were highly positive in their feedback about the professional and academic values of the program. Although the virtual and hybrid methods experienced significant challenges during the pandemic, the hybrid training module offered an "above average" effectiveness in performance, like the face-to-face mentoring platform in mentoring URM students in cancer disparity research.

Abstract
Aging-induced aortic stiffness has been associated with altered fatty acid metabolism. We studied aortic stiffness using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-assessed ventriculo-arterial coupling (VAC) and novel aortic (AO) global longitudinal strain (GLS) combined with targeted metabolomic profiling. Among community older adults without cardiovascular disease, VAC was calculated as aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), a marker of arterial stiffness, divided by left ventricular (LV) GLS. AOGLS was the maximum absolute strain measured by tracking the phasic distance between brachiocephalic artery origin and aortic annulus. In 194 subjects (71 ± 8.6 years; 88 women), AOGLS (mean 5.6 ± 2.1%) was associated with PWV (R = -0.3644, p < 0.0001), LVGLS (R = 0.2756, p = 0.0001) and VAC (R = -0.3742, p <0.0001). Stiff aorta denoted by low AOGLS <4.26% (25th percentile) was associated with age (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.04-1.24, p = 0.007), body mass index (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01-1.25, p = 0.03), heart rate (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.06, p = 0.011) and metabolites of medium-chain fatty acid oxidation: C8 (OR 1.005, p = 0.026), C10 (OR 1.003, p = 0.036), C12 (OR 1.013, p = 0.028), C12:2-OH/C10:2-DC (OR 1.084, p = 0.032) and C16-OH (OR 0.82, p = 0.006). VAC was associated with changes in long-chain hydroxyl and dicarboxyl carnitines. Multivariable models that included acyl-carnitine metabolites, but not amino acids, significantly increased the discrimination over clinical risk factors for prediction of AOGLS (AUC [area-under-curve] 0.73 to 0.81, p = 0.037) and VAC (AUC 0.78 to 0.87, p = 0.0044). Low AO GLS and high VAC were associated with altered medium-chain and long-chain fatty acid oxidation, respectively, which may identify early metabolic perturbations in aging-associated aortic stiffening. Abstract
BACKGROUND Infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in children with Severe Neurological Impairment (SNI). Alterations in immune cell numbers and function in children with neurodisability have been reported. We aimed to characterise neutrophil, monocyte and lymphocyte proportions and activation, at baseline and in response to stimulation with lipopolysaccharide, in children with SNI compared to healthy controls. METHODS Whole blood samples of children with SNI and controls were incubated in the presence or absence of lipopolysaccharide (10 ng/ml). Monocyte and neutrophil function (Cluster of Differentiation (CD)11b, (TLR)-4 and CD66b expression) and lymphocytes were assessed by flow cytometry. Expression of genes involved in the inflammasome (NLR Family Pyrin Domain Containing(NLRP)-3, Apoptosis-Associated Speck-like protein (ASC) and Interleukin(IL)1β) were assessed by PCR. RESULTS Monocytes and CD8+ T cells were lower in children with SNI (n = 14). CD66b, was hyporesponsive and monocyte TLR4 was hyperresponsive to lipopolysaccharide in children with SNI compared to controls (n = 14). NLRP3 expression was higher at baseline and IL1β expression was not upregulated in response to lipopolysaccharide in children with SNI in contrast to controls. CONCLUSION We have found significant differences in immune regulation in children with SNI compared to controls which may provide a useful therapeutic target in the future. IMPACT Children with SNI have reduced monocyte and CD8+ T cells. Neutrophils and monocytes in children with SNI show altered markers of activation in response to lipopolysaccharide. Expression of NLRP3 at the RNA level was higher at baseline in children with SNI. This study adds to the existing literature that children with neurological impairment have altered inflammatory and immune cell responses. This may provide a useful therapeutic target to reduce infection-related morbidity and mortality, and tertiary neurological injury in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-pressure injection injuries to the hand have been reported in both the community and industrial setting with varying levels of severity. However, there are little epidemiologic data regarding the prevalence of pressure-injection injuries. The purpose of this study is thus to describe trends in emergency department (ED) encounters associated with pressure injection injuries, thereby informing potential investments in research and education for these injuries. METHODS The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a nationally representative database of all ED encounters, was queried for all high-pressure injection injuries from 2012 to 2021. Patient demographic and injury data were collected and analyzed to describe trends in incidence, patient demographics, and sequelae of hand injury associated with an ED encounter for a pressure injection-related injury. RESULTS There were an estimated 15 307 (95% confidence interval: 15 051-15 562) high-pressure injection hand injuries from 2012 to 2021. Injuries were more frequent on weekends with the highest incidence on Sundays (18.9%) and Saturdays (18.0%) and during late spring and summer months (58.6%), with peak incidence occurring in May (16.8%). High-pressure paint injuries demonstrated a significantly higher rate of infection (23.7% of injuries) than pressure washer injuries (3.7%); however, pressure washer injuries were much more common overall (90% vs 10%). CONCLUSION High-pressure injection injuries to the hand and upper extremity represent a particularly concerning injury mechanism. Prompt recognition and proper management are crucial for improving outcomes. People that utilize pressure washers for household projects should be aware of the risks associated with these machines and utilize proper safety techniques.

Abstract
Photoplethysmography is a key sensing technology which is used in wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. Currently, photoplethysmography sensors are used to monitor physiological parameters including heart rate and heart rhythm, and to track activities like sleep and exercise. Yet, wearable photoplethysmography has potential to provide much more information on health and wellbeing, which could inform clinical decision making. This Roadmap outlines directions for research and development to realise the full potential of wearable photoplethysmography. Experts discuss key topics within the areas of sensor design, signal processing, clinical applications, and research directions. Their perspectives provide valuable guidance to researchers developing wearable photoplethysmography technology.

Abstract
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with cerebral and coronary artery disease. Symptomatic PAD affects about 5% of people over 55 years; many more have asymptomatic PAD. Early detection enables modification of arterial disease risk factors. Diagnostically, assessment of symptoms or signs can be unreliable; ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) testing is time-consuming and few healthcare professionals are properly trained. This study assessed the diagnostic accuracy of multi-site photoplethysmography (MPPG), an alternative non-invasive test for PAD, in primary care. PAD patients identified from general practice registers were age- and sex-matched with controls. Participants were assessed using MPPG, ABPI and duplex ultrasound (DUS). Outcome measures were sensitivity and specificity of MPPG and ABPI (relative to DUS) and concordance. MPPG test results were available in 249 of 298 eligible participants from 16 practices between May 2015 and November 2016. DUS detected PAD in 101/249 (40.6%). MPPG sensitivity was 79.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] 69.9-87.6%), with specificity 71.9% (95% CI 63.7-79.2%). ABPI sensitivity was 80.2% (95% CI 70.8-87.6%), with specificity 88.6% (95% CI 82-93.5%). With comparable sensitivity to ABPI, MPPG is quick, automated and simpler to do than ABPI; it offers the potential for rapid and accessible PAD assessments in primary care.

Abstract
MIS-C is a systemic inflammation disorder with poorly characterised immunopathological mechanisms. We compared changes in the systemic immune response in children with MIS-C (n = 12, 5-13 years) to healthy controls (n = 14, 5-15 years). Analysis was done in whole blood treated with LPS. Expression of CD11b and Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) in neutrophils and monocytes were analysed by flow cytometry. Serum cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-Ira, TNF-α, TNF-β, IFN-Υ, VEGF, EPO and GM-CSF) and mRNA levels of inflammasome molecules (NLRP3, ASC and IL-1β) were evaluated. Subpopulations of lymphocytes (CD3+, CD19+, CD56+, CD4+, CD8+, TCR Vδ1+, TCR Vδ2+) were assessed at basal levels. Absolute counts of neutrophils and NLR were high in children with MIS-C while absolute counts of lymphocytes were low. Children with MIS-C had increased levels of IL-6, IL-10, TNF-β and VEGF serum cytokines at the basal level, and significantly increased TNF-β post-LPS, compared to controls. IL-1RA and EPO decreased at baseline and post-LPS in MIS-C patients compared to controls. The percentage of CD3+ cells, NK cells and Vδ1 was lower while B cells were higher in children with MIS-C than in controls. Dysregulated immune response in children with MIS-C was evident and may be amenable to immunomodulation.

Abstract
Introduction: A pilot study assessing a novel approach to identify patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) using deep learning analysis of multi-site photoplethysmography (PPG) waveforms ("DL-PPG"). Methods: PPG recordings having baseline, unilateral arm pressure cuff occlusion and reactive hyperaemia flush phases from 6 body sites were studied in 51 Controls and 20 SSc patients. RGB scalogram images were obtained from the PPG, using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). 2 different pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs, namely, GoogLeNet and EfficientNetB0) were trained to classify the SSc and Control groups, evaluating their performance using 10-fold stratified cross validation (CV). Their classification performance (i.e., accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, with 95% confidence intervals) was also compared to traditional machine learning (ML), i.e., Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN). Results: On a participant basis DL-PPG accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for GoogLeNet were 83.1 (72.3-90.9), 75.0 (50.9-91.3) and 86.3 (73.7-94.3)% respectively, and for EfficientNetB0 were 87.3 (77.2-94.0), 80.0 (56.3-94.3) and 90.1 (78.6-96.7)%. The corresponding results for ML classification using LDA were 66.2 (53.9-77.0), 65.0 (40.8-84.6) and 66.7 (52.1-79.2)% respectively, and for KNN were 76.1 (64.5-85.4), 40.0 (19.1-63.9), and 90.2 (78.6-96.7)% respectively. Discussion: This study shows the potential of DL-PPG classification using CNNs to detect SSc. EfficientNetB0 gave an overall improved performance compared to GoogLeNet, with both CNNs performing better than the traditional ML methods tested. Our automatic AI approach, using transfer learning, could offer significant benefits for SSc diagnostics in a variety of clinical settings where low-cost portable and easy-to-use diagnostics can be beneficial.

Abstract
Youth suicide is increasing in the United States, with deaths among younger people of color driving this upward trend. For more than four decades, American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities have suffered disproportionate rates of youth suicide and years of productive life lost compared to other U.S. Races. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recently funded three regional Collaborative Hubs to carry out suicide prevention research, practice, and policy development with AIAN communities in Alaska and rural and urban areas of the Southwestern United States. The Hub partnerships are supporting a diverse array of tribally-driven studies, approaches, and policies with immediate value for increasing empirically driven public health strategies to address youth suicide. We discuss unique features of the cross-Hub work, including: (a) long-standing Community-Based Participatory Research processes that led to the Hubs' innovative designs and novel approaches to suicide prevention and evaluation, (b) comprehensive ecological theoretical approaches that contextualize individual risk and protective factors in multilevel social contexts; (c) unique task-shifting and systems of care approaches to increase reach and impact on youth suicide in low-resource settings; and (d) prioritization of strengths-based approaches. The work of the Collaborative Hubs for AIAN youth suicide prevention is generating specific and substantive implications for practice, policy, and research presented in this article at a time when youth suicide prevention is a dire national priority. Approaches also have relevance for historically marginalized communities worldwide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A Spanish language computerized tool would facilitate cancer pain assessment and management for the underserved population of native Spanish speakers who do not speak or lack command of the English language. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to identify Spanish-speaking adults' understanding and interpretation of the PAIN Report It-Spanish items and instructions as well as translation and technical issues. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, 20 mostly monolingual Spanish-speaking adults engaged in 1.5- to 2-hour, audio-recorded cognitive interviews as they completed the multidimensional PAIN Report It-Spanish. Three bilingual researchers conducted content data analysis. RESULTS Sixteen women and 4 men generally understood the translated text, but some had interpretation issues regarding the 0 to 10 number scale and understanding of the pain quality descriptors. Many participants found the program easy to complete, even when they had problems in some areas. Most participants welcomed the opportunity to report pain in their native language and appreciated research to help Hispanics with the management of their pain. CONCLUSION PAIN Report It-Spanish is a valid tool to assess pain in a Spanish-speaking population. Improved orientation to the pain reporting tasks and alternate translations for several problematic/confusing Spanish words require additional study, especially among underrepresented black Hispanics and males. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE Findings indicate that Spanish-speaking adults (1) easily use a body outline to report their pain location, (2) may use a 0 to 10 scale differently than other individuals, and (3) may have a limited repertoire of pain quality and pattern descriptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition plays an important role in diabetes self-management. Web-based diabetes care, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), enables more personalized care. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the usability and preliminary efficacy of a web-based AI-driven nutrition platform to support people with diabetes and their carers in identifying healthy recipes, meal planning, and web-based shopping. METHODS Diabetes UK signposted people with diabetes and their carers to the platform's study-specific portal through its website, social media, and newsletters. A total of 73 adult participants with prediabetes or diabetes or their carers completed the baseline web-based survey. Of these 73 participants, 23 (32%) completed a web-based survey after 8 weeks of platform use. Web-based semistructured interviews were conducted with platform users (7/23, 30%) who agreed to be followed up and diabetes experts (n=3) who had nutrition and platform knowledge. The intervention consists of a web-based platform that incorporates AI to personalize recipes, meal planning, and shopping list experiences and was made available for 8 weeks. Baseline characteristics, satisfaction, system usability, and diabetes-related and general health indicators were assessed before and after using the platform for 8 weeks. RESULTS Reductions in weight (mean difference 4.5 kg/m2, 95% CI 1.0-12.0; P=.009; Cliff δ=0.33) and waist size (mean difference 3.9 cm, 95% CI 2.0-6.5; P=.008; Cliff δ=0.48) were found. Most of the participants (151/217, 69.6%) did not regularly use the platform and had low or very low engagement scores. However, the platform was perceived as accessible with no need for additional assistance (11/21, 52%), user-friendly (8/21, 38%), and easy to use (8/21, 38%), regardless of some usability issues. Saving recipes was the most popular feature, with 663 saved recipes. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the usability of the nutrition platform was well perceived by users and their carers. As participants managed their diabetes well, adding an education component would be specifically relevant for people less familiar with the role of diet in diabetes management. To assess the platform's effectiveness in improving diabetes-related health indicators, controlled studies with a larger and more diverse participant sample are recommended.

Abstract
Cleanliness of eggs is critical in successful hatching egg operations. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of trans-cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion (TCNE) wash treatments, as a sanitation strategy, on embryonic development in fertilized eggs. Trans-cinnamaldehyde is a generally recognized as safe status phytochemical obtained from cinnamon bark. TCNE were prepared with emulsifiers Tween 80 (Tw.80) or gum Arabic and lecithin (GAL) by sonication. Day-old fertilized eggs were subjected to TCNE wash treatments at 34°C for 5 min, followed by 18 d of incubation at 37.7°C. Washing of fertilized eggs with TCNE-Tw.80 or GAL at 0.48% concentration did not significantly alter the egg weight at d 18 of incubation, as compared to baseline and control (P > 0.05). The egg weight loss (calculated as percentage) did not differ significantly between eggs subjected to nanoemulsion wash treatments and control eggs (P > 0.05). In case of embryo fertility and mortality, for baseline and control, ∼ 95% fertility rate was achieved, with combined early and midterm mortality at 16%. Likewise, TCNE-Tw.80 or TCNE-GAL resulted in 95% fertility (P > 0.05), with 11% and 17% combined early and midterm mortality, respectively. Furthermore, TCNE wash treatments did not differ significantly in yolk sac and embryo weight (as compared to control) and did not affect the length of the d 18 embryo (P > 0.05). Moreover, TCNE wash treatments did not alter tibia weight and length (P > 0.05). Results suggest that TCNE could potentially be used as a natural antimicrobial for fertilized egg sanitation. Further studies in industry settings are warranted.

Abstract
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions prevent and control disease in humanitarian response. To inform future funding and policy priorities, WASH 'gaps' were identified via 220 focus-group discussions with people affected by crises and WASH practitioners, 246 global survey respondents, and 614 documents. After extraction, 2,888 (48 per cent) gaps from direct feedback and 3,151 (52 per cent) from literature were categorised. People affected by crises primarily listed 'services gaps', including a need for water, sanitation, solid waste disposal, and hygiene items. Global survey respondents principally cited 'mechanism gaps' in providing services, including collaboration, WASH staffing expertise, and community engagement. Literature highlighted gaps in health (but not other) WASH intervention impacts. Overall, people affected by crises wanted the 'what' (services), responders wanted the 'how' (to supply), and researchers wanted the 'why' (health consequences). This study suggests a need for a renewed focus on basic WASH services, collaboration across stakeholders, and research on WASH outcomes beyond health.

Abstract
The rate of the final step in the astrophysical αp process, the ^{34}Ar(α,p)^{37}K reaction, suffers from large uncertainties due to a lack of experimental data, despite having a considerable impact on the observable light curves of x-ray bursts and the composition of the ashes of hydrogen and helium burning on accreting neutron stars. We present the first direct measurement constraining the ^{34}Ar(α,p)^{37}K reaction cross section, using the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics gas jet target. The combined cross section for the ^{34}Ar,Cl(α,p)^{37}K,Ar reaction is found to agree well with Hauser-Feshbach predictions. The ^{34}Ar(α,2p)^{36}Ar cross section, which can be exclusively attributed to the ^{34}Ar beam component, also agrees to within the typical uncertainties quoted for statistical models. This indicates the applicability of the statistical model for predicting astrophysical (α,p) reaction rates in this part of the αp process, in contrast to earlier findings from indirect reaction studies indicating orders-of-magnitude discrepancies. This removes a significant uncertainty in models of hydrogen and helium burning on accreting neutron stars.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 4th most common cancer type in the US. Following CRC treatment, about 37% of CRC survivors experience symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. Additionally, psychosocial distress is especially prevalent among CRC survivors with a stoma, and those reporting CRC-induced sexual dysfunction. Pharmacotherapy is one of the mainstay treatment options for psychological distress among patients with CRC. Research has shown that racial disparities are present with the use of supportive care medications in other cancer types. However, this has not been explored with the use of psychotropic medication for patients with CRC. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the presence of racial disparities in psychotropic medication use among patients with CRC.
Methods: Utilizing the National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (NCI SEER)- Medicare linked database, our analysis included all patients with a CRC diagnosis and an active outpatient prescription claims for psychotropic medications from 2009-2018. Prescription claims were specific to patients diagnosed with CRC and stratified by self-identified race and ethnicity. Patients who were on psychotropic medications before CRC diagnosis, or unspecified race or ethnicity were excluded from the analysis. Psychotropic medications consisted of anxiolytics, antidepressants, and antipsychotic medications.
Results: 136,014 participants were included in the analysis. The racial and ethnic breakdown comprised of 81.56% White, 11.22% African American (AA), 2.66% Hispanic, 4.27% Asian/Pacific Islander (API), and 0.25% Native American (NA). Results are presented as unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Compared to White patients, AA (OR 0.53; 95% CI 0.50-0.56), API (OR 0.50; 95% CI 0.46-0.54), Hispanic (OR 0.64; 95% CI 0.58-0.71), and NA (OR 0.59; 95% CI 0.43-0.81) patients had lower utilization of anxiolytic medications. Regarding antidepressant use, AA (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.53-0.57), API (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.43-0.49), Hispanic (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.68-0.79), and NA (OR 0.78; 95% CI 0.63-0.96) had lower utilization compared to White patients. Differences in antipsychotic medication use was observed with Asian/Pacific Islanders (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.64-0.78) and Native Americans (OR 0.49; 95% CI 0.31-0.76) compared to White patients. No other racial differences in antipsychotic medications were identified.
Conclusion: The study showed that racial and ethnic disparities are present with the use of psychotropic medications among patients with CRC. Racial and ethnic minority patients had lower use for most of the drug classes evaluated. Further research is warranted to assess the potential barriers and facilitators of psychotropic medication use among patients belonging to historically minoritized racial and ethnic groups.

Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is currently the third leading cause of cancer mortality and the incidence is projected to increase by 2030. Despite recent advances in its treatment, African Americans have a 50-60% higher incidence and 30% higher mortality rate when compared to European Americans possibly resulting from differences in socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, and genetics. Genetics plays a role in cancer predisposition, response to cancer therapeutics (pharmacogenetics), and in tumor behavior, making some genes targets for oncologic therapeutics. We hypothesize that the germline genetic differences in predisposition, drug response, and targeted therapies also impact PDAC disparities. To demonstrate the impact of genetics and pharmacogenetics on PDAC disparities, a review of the literature was performed using PubMed with variations of the following keywords: pharmacogenetics, pancreatic cancer, race, ethnicity, African, Black, toxicity, and the FDA-approved drug names: Fluoropyrimidines, Topoisomerase inhibitors, Gemcitabine, Nab-Paclitaxel, Platinum agents, Pembrolizumab, PARP-inhibitors, and NTRK fusion inhibitors. Our findings suggest that the genetic profiles of African Americans may contribute to disparities related to FDA approved chemotherapeutic response for patients with PDAC. We recommend a strong focus on improving genetic testing and participation in biobank sample donations for African Americans. In this way, we can improve our current understanding of genes that influence drug response for patients with PDAC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study differences in cytokine expression profiles between women with ongoing pregnancy and those experiencing spontaneous miscarriage, among women who presented with threatened miscarriage before week 16 of gestation. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Academic hospital. PATIENT(S) In this prospective cohort study, 155 pregnant women, comprising normal pregnant women recruited from antenatal clinics (n = 97) and women with threatened miscarriage recruited from an emergency walk-in clinic (n = 58). INTERVENTION(S) None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Sixty-five serum cytokines quantified using multiplex immunoassay correlated with miscarriage outcomes. RESULT(S) Among women presenting with threatened miscarriage, those who eventually miscarried had significantly lower levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12p70, IL-17A, B-cell-activating factor, B lymphocyte chemoattractant, basic nerve growth factor, interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, and tumor necrosis factor-α and higher levels of vascular endothelial growth factor A, IL-21, and stromal cell-derived factor 1α than those with ongoing pregnancy. Comparisons between normal pregnancies and women with threatened miscarriage who eventually miscarried revealed significant differences across 7 cytokines: B-cell-activating factor; B lymphocyte chemoattractant; basic nerve growth factor; IL-17A; fractalkine/CX3CL1; vascular endothelial growth factor A; and CCL22. Vascular endothelial growth factor A exhibited a negative correlation with the progesterone level (r = -0.270). The cluster of significant cytokines alludes to T cell proliferation, B-cell proliferation, natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity, and apoptosis as important pathways that determine pregnancy outcomes. Bioinformatic analysis further revealed alteration of the suppressor of cytokine signaling proteins family of Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling axis by cytokines as a plausible key molecular mechanism in spontaneous miscarriage. CONCLUSION(S) This study demonstrates that the regulated balance between the proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways is crucial to maintaining pregnancy. A better understanding of the cytokines associated with immunomodulatory effects may lead to novel targets for the prediction and treatment of spontaneous miscarriage.

Abstract
Salmonella Enteritidis is a major foodborne pathogen that causes enteric illnesses in humans, primarily through the consumption of contaminated poultry meat and eggs. Despite implementation of traditional disinfection approaches to reduce S. Enteritidis contamination, egg-borne outbreaks continue to occur, raising public health concerns and adversely affecting the popularity and profitability for the poultry industry. Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status phytochemicals such as Trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC) have previously shown to exhibit anti-Salmonella efficacy, however, the low solubility of TC is a major hurdle in its adoption as an egg wash treatment. Therefore, the present study investigated the efficacy of Trans-cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsions (TCNE) prepared with emulsifiers Tween 80 (Tw.80) or Gum Arabic and lecithin (GAL) as dip treatments, at 34°C, for reducing S. Enteritidis on shelled eggs in presence or absence of 5% chicken litter. In addition, the efficacy of TCNE dip treatments in reducing trans-shell migration of S. Enteritidis across shell barrier was investigated. The effect of wash treatments on shell color were evaluated on d 0, 1, 7, and 14 of refrigerated storage. TCNE-Tw.80 or GAL treatments (0.06, 0.12, 0.24, 0.48%) were effective in inactivating S. Enteritidis by at least 2 to 2.5 log cfu/egg as early as 1 min of washing time (P < 0.05). In presence of organic matter, nanoemulsions (0.48%) reduced S. Enteritidis counts by ∼ 2 to 2.5 log cfu/egg as early as 1 min, (P < 0.05). Nanoemulsion wash also inhibited trans-shell migration of S. Enteritidis, as compared to control (P < 0.05). The nanoemulsion wash treatments did not affect shell color (P > 0.05). Results suggest that TCNE could potentially be used as an antimicrobial wash to reduce S. Enteritidis on shelled eggs, although further studies investigating the effect of TCNE wash treatments on organoleptic properties of eggs are necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, experiential education became challenging as sites began to cancel scheduled rotations, and the University of Florida College of Pharmacy had to cancel the first advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) block. This was allowable given the excess number of experiential hours built into the curriculum. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING To meet total program credit hour requirements, a six-credit virtual course was created to mimic an experiential rotation. This course was designed to bridge didactic learning with experiential learning. The course included presentation of patient cases, topic discussions, pharmaceutical calculations, self-care cases, disease state management cases, and career development. FINDINGS Students provided feedback via a survey containing 23 Likert type questions and four open-ended questions. Most students agreed or strongly agreed that participation in self-care scenarios, small group discussions (calculations and topic discussion), and disease state management cases (preceptor dialogue and verbal defense activities) were valuable learning experiences. The verbal defense portion of the disease management case and the self-care scenarios were the most highly rated learning activities. Peer review activities in the career development assignments were seen as the least beneficial component of the course. SUMMARY This course allowed students an opportunity to further prepare for APPEs in a unique learning environment. The college was able to identify students requiring additional support during APPEs and provide earlier intervention. Additionally, data supported exploring incorporation of new learning activities into the current curriculum.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in young women is rare and not well studied. Since they do not qualify for mammographic screening, they are more likely to present with symptoms. Young women have also been associated with poorer outcomes, but it is unknown whether presentation mode affects outcome. We aimed to compare characteristics of DCIS patients <40 years of age presenting with symptoms versus those without, and determine whether presentation mode affects recurrence. METHODS Pure DCIS patients aged <40 years were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical presentation, pathology and recurrence data were collected. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate the correlation of presentation mode with outcomes. RESULTS 40 patients with 41 cases were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 32.3 years (range 17-39). 73.2% and 26.8% presented with symptoms or abnormal imaging respectively. Of the cases who presented with symptoms, 86.7%, 10.0% and 3.3% had palpable lump, nipple discharge or breast pain, respectively. The average tumor size was 22.0 mm (range 2.0-86.9) and 12.2 mm (range 3-25) for patients who presented with symptoms and non-symptomatic group, respectively. Cases presenting with symptoms were statistically associated with higher grade (p = 0.0090). On median follow-up of 85 months, there were 3 (7.3%) recurrences, which were not statistically associated with presentation mode. CONCLUSION Young women with DCIS tend to present with symptoms, with breast lump as the commonest symptom. Symptomatic patients tend to be associated with grade III tumours, compared to non-symptomatic patients. On long-term follow-up, mode of presentation was not statistically associated with recurrence.

Abstract
Background In 2020, the study “Corona-Monitoring Lokal” (CoMoLo) assessed seroprevalences of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in four study locations that were particularly affected by outbreaks in the early stages of the pandemic in Germany. One of the objectives of the 2021 follow-up was to examine the development of immunological parameters over time, including the extent of IgG antibody waning after vaccination. Methods Venous blood specimens were collected from a sample of initial study participants over a 2-week period between May and October 2021, with an oversampling of seropositive or previously infected individuals. Levels of IgG antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured from serum using Anti-SARS-CoV-2-QuantiVac-ELISA (IgG) tests by Euroimmun. Information on SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations or known infections was collected via online questionnaires or telephone interviews. Results A total of 3328 participants (74% response) gave blood specimens for this follow-up study, with questionnaire information available for 2843 (85%) of these. Preliminary analyses suggest that in participants who had received two doses of a vaccine more than 3 weeks before giving blood (n = 1583), IgG levels decreased exponentially by about 9.8% (95%CI 9.1% - 10.4%) with each additional week since the last dose, when controlling for age, sex, and type of vaccine. There was evidence of this waning effect differing by vaccine type. Antibody levels also appear to decline with increasing age, according to preliminary results. Final results of the linear model used to assess the dynamics and predictive factors of antibody levels will be reported. Conclusions This follow-up study will add evidence to an improved understanding of antibody waning after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Preliminary results are in line with international studies and may be helpful for discussions on potential benefits of further vaccinations in Germany. Key messages • Antibodies induced by COVID-19 vaccination wane over time. The magnitude of this effect differs by vaccine type. Antibodies also decreased with increasing age. • Our results may be helpful for discussions on potential benefits of further COVID-19 vaccinations in Germany.

Abstract
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges for populations, health systems and governments worldwide, which have resulted in lasting economic, social and health impacts. The results of such have been felt disproportionately throughout society and existing vulnerabilities have been highlighted and heightened. A clear understanding of the extent of these vulnerabilities is needed in order to fully address the problem. The World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Investment for Health and Well-being (WHOCC), Public Health Wales has developed a summary report focusing on the existing and emerging inequalities resulting from the pandemic, as identified through international evidence and learning from the International Horizon Scanning Reports. These reports, undertaken between May 2020 - August 2021, are based upon rapid evidence synthesis reviews of international literature. The summary report focuses on global learning and best practices in order to better understand and address the unequal impacts of the pandemic. The information has been categorised according to the five essential conditions required to enable a healthy life as presented within the WHO health equity conditions framework. The report provides evidence on groups most vulnerable to both direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic as well as promising practice to address the resulting inequity. Inequalities and related factors explored within the report include but are not limited to, level of deprivation and education. Taking a global perspective, this report summarises international evidence to support inclusive, sustainable, and equitable solutions, such as protecting economic well-being and taking an intergenerational lens in both response and recovery. To address and mitigate the impact of the pandemic upon vulnerable groups, collating and sharing international evidence and best practice has proven to support equitable long-term socio-economic and environmental recovery.

Abstract
Left atrial appendage (LAA) is believed to be a common site of thrombus formation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the commonly-applied stroke risk stratification model (such as. CHA2DS2-VASc score) does not include any structural or hemodynamic features of LAA. Recent studies have suggested that it is important to incorporate LAA geometrical and hemodynamic features to evaluate the risk of thrombus formation in LAA, which may better delineate the AF patients for anticoagulant administration and prevent strokes. This review focuses on the LAA-related factors that may be associated with thrombus formation and cardioembolic events.

Abstract
Background: Improving rates of advance care planning (ACP) and advance directive completion is a recognized goal of health care in the United States. No prior study has examined the efficacy of standardized patient (SP)-based student interprofessional ACP trainings. Objectives: The present study aims to evaluate an interprofessional approach to ACP education using SP encounters. Design: We designed a pre–post evaluation of an innovative interprofessional ACP training curriculum using multimodal adult learning techniques to test the effects of completing ACP discussions with SPs. Three surveys (pre-training T1, post-training T2, and post-clinical encounter T3) evaluated student knowledge, Communication Self-Efficacy (CSES), ACP self-efficacy, and interprofessional teamwork (using SPICE-R2). Setting/Subjects: Students from the schools of medicine, nursing, and social work attended three training modules and two SP encounters focused on ACP. Measurements/Results: During academic year 2018–2019, 36 students participated in the training at University of Maryland. Results demonstrated statistically significant improvements in ACP self-efficacy, MT1 = 2.9 (standard deviation [SD]T1 = 0.61) compared with MT3 = 3.9 (SDT3 = 0.51), p < 0.001, and CSES, MT1 = 4.6 (SDT1 = 1.35) versus MT3 = 7.3 (SDT3 = 0.51), p < 0.001, from T1 to T3. There was a medium-to-large improvement in knowledge from an average score of 4.3 (SD = 1.0) at T1 to an average score of 5.5 (SD = 1.4) at T2, p = 0.005, d = 0.67. Conclusions: Our interprofessional training module and SP encounter was successful in improving medical, social work, and nursing students' self-reported communication skills and knowledge regarding ACP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Duplex ultrasound (DUS), a non-invasive means of arterial mapping, allows for reliable diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). One of our authors (CPO), developed a standardised DUS-based scoring system, devised for rapid detection and reporting of PAD. The purpose of this study is to validate this system, determining diagnostic performance both overall, and per disease severity. METHODS 250 participants were recruited, based on diagnosis (N = 125), or absence of PAD (N = 125) from GP registers. Right and left legs per subject were handled as independent readings, determining actual PAD status via ABPI <0.9, and then further grading disease severity using suggested ABPI ranges. Data were excluded if no corresponding ABPI value was obtained per DUS-determination, or if the ABPI reading was >1.4, owing to risk of false negatives due to incompressible vessels. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were obtained overall, and per severity classification. Furthermore, interrater agreement between ABPI- and DUS-determined PAD severity was determined by linear weighted Cohen's Kappa. RESULTS The sensitivity and specificity in the detection of disease overall was 81.0% (95% CI 73.4 - 87.2%) and 86.3% (95% CI 82.3 - 89.8%), respectively. From mild to severe PAD, sensitivity increased from 71.1% (95% CI 55.7 - 83.6%) to 89.3% (95% CI 71.8 - 97.7%). Furthermore, a Cohen Kappa value of 0.63 (95% CI 0.57 - 0.69) was obtained, indicating moderate agreement between the two diagnostic methods. CONCLUSIONS Findings in this study validate the diagnostic performance of the standardised DUS scoring system, as well as its capacity to grade severity of disease, offering a potential tool for the identification of PAD in the community / research settings following initial screening methods. Confirmatory work could include a comparison of DUS-determined disease with gold-standard methods of non-invasive angiography, and novel tools such as toe-flex NIRS and multi-site photoplethysmography.

Abstract
Cellular recycling via autophagy-associated proteins is a key catabolic pathway critical to invasive fungal pathogen growth and virulence in the nutrient-limited host environment. Protein kinase A (PKA) is vital for the growth and virulence of numerous fungal pathogens. However, the underlying basis for its regulation of pathogenesis remains poorly understood in any species. Our Aspergillus fumigatus PKA-dependent whole proteome and phosphoproteome studies employing advanced mass spectroscopic approaches identified numerous previously undefined PKA-regulated proteins in catabolic pathways. Here, we demonstrate reciprocal inhibition of autophagy and PKA activity, and identify 16 autophagy-associated proteins as likely novel PKA-regulated effectors. We characterize the novel PKA-phosphoregulated sorting nexin Atg20, and demonstrate its importance for growth, cell wall stress response, and virulence of A. fumigatus in a murine infection model. Additionally, we identify physical and functional interaction of Atg20 with previously characterized sorting nexin Atg24. Furthermore, we demonstrate the importance of additional uncharacterized PKA-regulated putative autophagy-associated proteins to hyphal growth. Our data presented here indicate that PKA regulates the autophagy pathway much more extensively than previously known, including targeting of novel effector proteins with fungal-specific functions important for invasive disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to compare student and faculty perceptions of strength of residency candidacy and to identify student preferences and perceptions that influence the process of being selected by a residency program beyond standard application materials. METHODS A 31-item questionnaire was administered to third-year and fourth-year pharmacy students to collect information regarding factors deemed important for successful residency program candidacy. Global assessment of strength of residency candidacy was self-rated by students and a group of clinical faculty blinded to student responses. Interrater reliability for student-to-faculty and faculty-to-faculty perceptions of strength of residency candidacy was determined. RESULTS Students generally reported good academic metrics and participation in a wide variety of scholarly activities deemed important in attaining a residency position. Students rated overall strength of residency candidacy as "above average" (n = 54, 37.2%), "average" (n = 60, 41.4%), and "below average" (n = 31, 21.3%), and self-perception increased with matriculation. Student self-assessment of strength of residency candidacy compared to faculty assessment showed poor agreement (mean [SD] kappa = 0.27 [0.08]). Faculty concordance in assessment of strength of residency candidacy was moderate (α = 0.55). CONCLUSIONS Concordance in self-assessment of strength of residency candidacy of students compared to faculty was poor. In contrast, agreement among faculty was moderate with generally lower ratings compared to student self-rating, suggesting that students are overconfident in this regard. These findings support residency preparedness training in pharmacy curricula which should include formal assessment of strength of residency candidacy to identify gaps.

Abstract
AIM Pulmonary haemorrhage (PH) is an acute catastrophic event with low incidence yet high mortality among neonates. We aimed to systematically review the management of PH. METHODS A search was carried out of the PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases according to the PRISMA guidelines. Data were extracted on study design and size, patient demographics, primary and adjunctive treatment methods, and treatment outcomes. RESULTS Sixteen studies with 385 newborn infants were included and were significantly heterogeneous regarding treatment methods. Primary treatments included surfactant, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), epinephrine, coagulopathy management, intermittent positive pressure ventilation, cocaine and tolazoline. Adjunctive treatment methods included blood products, HFOV, increased positive end-expiratory pressure, vitamin K, surfactant, adrenaline, vasopressors and inotropes. All five studies using surfactant as primary treatment were effective in improving oxygenation index measures and preventing recurrence of PH, and three studies found no association between surfactant and death or long-term disability. Ventilatory support, epinephrine, management of coagulopathy and tolazoline were all found to be effective primary treatments for PH. CONCLUSION There are several effective methods of managing PH in neonates. Further understanding of the aetiology of PH and ongoing research will allow future prevention and improvements in management of PH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of invasive candidiasis (IC) relies on insensitive cultures; the relative utility of fungal biomarkers in children is unclear. METHODS This multinational observational cohort study enrolled patients aged >120 days and <18 years with concern for IC from 1 January 2015 to 26 September 2019 at 25 centers. Blood collected at onset of symptoms was tested using T2Candida, Fungitell (1→3)-β-D-glucan, Platelia Candida Antigen (Ag) Plus, and Platelia Candida Antibody (Ab) Plus assays. Operating characteristics were determined for each biomarker, and assays meeting a defined threshold considered in combination. Sterile site cultures were the reference standard. RESULTS Five hundred participants were enrolled at 22 centers in 3 countries, and IC was diagnosed in 13 (2.6%). Thirteen additional blood specimens were collected and successfully spiked with Candida species, to achieve a 5.0% event rate. Valid T2Candida, Fungitell, Platelia Candida Ag Plus, and Platelia Candida Ab Plus assay results were available for 438, 467, 473, and 473 specimens, respectively. Operating characteristics for T2Candida were most optimal for detecting IC due to any Candida species, with results as follows: sensitivity, 80.0% (95% confidence interval, 59.3%-93.2%), specificity 97.1% (95.0%-98.5%), positive predictive value, 62.5% (43.7%-78.9%), and negative predictive value, 98.8% (97.2%-99.6%). Only T2Candida and Platelia Candida Ag Plus assays met the threshold for combination testing. Positive result for either yielded the following results: sensitivity, 86.4% (95% confidence interval, 65.1%- 97.1%); specificity, 94.7% (92.0%-96.7%); positive predictive value, 47.5% (31.5%-63.9%); and negative predictive value, 99.2% (97.7%-99.8%). CONCLUSIONS T2Candida alone or in combination with Platelia Candida Ag Plus may be beneficial for rapid detection of Candida species in children with concern for IC. Abstract
Background: The Research Training Opportunities for Outstanding Leaders (ReTOOL) Program is an NCI/NIH-funded program (R25CA214225) that focuses on increasing the representation of underserved minority (URM) scientists in biomedical research careers to diversify the cancer research workforce. In addition to didactic curriculum and mentoring, each trainee works with a research mentor who provides hands-on research training experiences during the summer. Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ReTOOL Program was modified to be virtual for the 2020 program. Methods: In response to the COVID19 global pandemic, the ReTOOL program leadership and faculty mentors modified the program element: didactic classes, research training, mentorship, seminars and support networks. The introductory week's independent reading sessions and weekly research seminars remained unchanged, as they were already virtual. Results: 20 students participated in the ReTOOL 2020 program, which started on May 4 and ended on August 7. An online program agreement was created to set expectations about participation, weekly reporting form to ensure trainees met program requirements, and evaluations for continuous monitoring. Specific adjustments that were made included: (1) the one-week preparatory didactic classes were conducted online using Zoom; (2) all research training took place virtually. All wet-lab research-training activities were cancelled, with the 2020 faculty mentors primarily dry-lab scientists and scientists with expertise in secondary data analyses. All trainees worked remotely with dedicated computer/laptop with camera for Zoom video communications, internet and dedicated space for learning. There was access to online library resources through University of Florida (UF); (3) Mentorship was provided with increased frequency of meetings with faculty mentors, program staff and peers; (4) Weekly social event to foster relationships and peer networks. Trainees developed fun, lighthearted activities; and (5) Research showcase with oral presentations through Zoom and innovative use of Twitter for poster sessions. A critical missed opportunity for the trainees was visiting different graduate or professional programs at UF. To fill this gap, we provided funding for each trainee to visit UF later. An advantage of moving the program to a virtual platform was co-mentoring by international mentors in Africa, through the Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC). Additionally, the Service Learning experiences took place virtually. Conclusion: The COVID19 pandemic created an unusual circumstance but we were able to overcome the challenges, which included Zoom fatigue, adjustment to different time zones, isolation and information fatigue. While the ReTOOL research-training program was different in 2020, we were still be able to provide a meaningful experience for the trainees. 2020 trainees submitted 7 conference abstracts and 6 publications. This includes a special series focused on the ReTOOL program projects soon to publish in ecancermedicalscience Journal.

Abstract
The photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is widely measured by clinical and consumer devices, and it is emerging as a potential tool for assessing vascular age. The shape and timing of the PPG pulse wave are both influenced by normal vascular aging, changes in arterial stiffness and blood pressure, and atherosclerosis. This review summarizes research into assessing vascular age from the PPG. Three categories of approaches are described: 1) those which use a single PPG signal (based on pulse wave analysis), 2) those which use multiple PPG signals (such as pulse transit time measurement), and 3) those which use PPG and other signals (such as pulse arrival time measurement). Evidence is then presented on the performance, repeatability and reproducibility, and clinical utility of PPG-derived parameters of vascular age. Finally, the review outlines key directions for future research to realize the full potential of photoplethysmography for assessing vascular age.
