Effect of magnetic field coupled magnetic biochar on membrane bioreactor efficiency, membrane fouling mitigation and microbial communities

The excitation by magnetic field was established to mitigate the membrane fouling of magnetic biochar (MB)-supplemented membrane bioreactor (MBR) in this study. The results showed that the transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase rates decreased by about 8 % after introducing the magnetic field compared with the magnetic biochar-MBR (MB-MBR). Membrane characterization suggested that the flocs in the magnetic field-magnetic biochar-MBR (MF-MB-MBR) formed a highly permeable developed cake layer, and a fluffier and more porous deposited layer on membrane surface, which minimized fouling clogging of the membrane pores. Further mechanistic investigation revealed that the decrease in contact angle of fouled membrane surface in MF-MB-MBR, i.e. an enhanced membrane hydrophilicity, is considered important for forming highly permeable layers. Additionally, the magnetic field was demonstrated to have a positive effect on the improvement of the magneto-biological effect, the enhancement of charge neutralization and adsorption bridging between sludge and magnetic biochar, and the reduction of formation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), which all yielded sludge flocs with a large pore structure conducive to form a fluffy and porous deposited layer in the membrane surface. Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the magnetic field also led to a reduction in microbial diversity, and that it promoted the enrichment of specific functional microbial communities (e.g. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes) playing an important role in mitigating membrane fouling. Taken together, this study of magnetic field-enhanced magnetic biochar for MBR membrane fouling mitigation provides insights important new ideas for more effective and sustainable operation strategies.

Space aquatic chemistry: A roadmap for drinking water treatment in microgravity

Rapid advancement in aerospace technology has successfully enabled long-term life and economic activities in space, particularly in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), extending up to 2000 km from the mean sea level. However, the sustainance of the LEO Economy and its Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) still relies on a regular cargo supply of essential commodities (e.g., water, food) from Earth, for which there still is a lack of adequate and sustainable technologies. One key challenge in this context is developing water treatment technologies and standards that can perform effectively under microgravity conditions. Solving this technical challenge will be a milestone in providing a scientific basis and the necessary support mechanisms for establishing permanent bases in outer space and beyond. To identify clues towards solving this challenge, we looked back at relevant scientific research exploring novel technologies and standards for deep space exploration, also considering feedback for enhancing these technologies on land. Synthesizing our findings, we share our outlook for the future of drinking water treatment in microgravity. We also bring up a new concept for space aquatic chemistry, considering the closed environment of engineered systems operating in microgravity.

Integrated In Situ Fabrication of CuO Nanorod-Decorated Polymer Membranes for the Catalytic Flow-Through Reduction of p-Nitrophenol

We developed a novel method to fabricate copper nanorods in situ in a poly(ether sulfone) (15 wt %) casting solution by a sonochemical reduction of Cu2+ ions with NaBH4. The main twist is the addition of ethanol to remove excess NaBH4 through Cu(0) catalyzed ethanolysis. This enabled the direct use of the resulting copper-containing casting dispersions for membrane preparation by liquid nonsolvent-induced phase separation and led to full utilization of the copper source, generating zero metal waste. We characterized the copper nanorods as presented in the membranes via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV/vis spectroscopy. We could demonstrate that the rapid immobilization from reducing conditions led to the membrane incorporation of copper nanorods in a state of high reactivity, which also promoted the complete oxidation to CuO after fabrication. We further observed a large aspect ratio and crystal straining of the nanorods, likely resulting from growth around the matrix polymer. The entanglement with poly(ether sulfone) further facilitated a selective presentation at the pore surface of the final CuO-decorated membranes. The membranes also exhibit high water permeances of up to 2800 L/m2hbar. Our catalytic membranes achieved exceptionally high activities in the aqueous flow-through reduction of p-nitrophenol (p-NP), with turnover frequencies of up to 115 h-1, even surpassing those of other state-of-the-art catalytic membranes that incorporate Pd or Ag. Additionally, we demonstrated that catalytic hydrolysis of the reducing agent in water can lead to hydrogen gas formation and blocking of active sites during continuous catalytic p-NP hydrogenation. We illustrated that the accompanying conversion loss can be mitigated by facilitated gas transport in the water-filled pores, which is dependent on the orientation of the pore size gradient and the flow direction.

Mixed scaling patterns and mechanisms of high-pressure nanofiltration in hypersaline wastewater desalination

Nanofiltration (NF) will play a crucial role in salt fractionation and recovery, but the complicated and severe mixed scaling is not yet fully understood. In this work, the mixed scaling patterns and mechanisms of high-pressure NF in zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) scenarios were investigated by disclosing the role of key foulants. The bulk crystallization of CaSO4 and Mg-Si complexes and the resultant pore blocking and cake formation under high pressure were the main scaling mechanisms in hypersaline desalination. The incipient scalants were Mg-Si hydrates, CaF2, CaCO3, and CaMg(CO3)2. Si deposited by adsorption and polymerization prior to and impeded Ca scaling when Mg was not added, thus pore blocking was the main mechanism. The amorphous Mg-Si hydrates contribute to dense cake formation under high hydraulic pressure and permeate drag force, causing rapid flux decline as Mg was added. Humic acid has a high affinity to Ca2+by complexation, which enhances incipient scaling by adsorption or lowers the energy barrier of nucleation but improves the interconnectivity of the foulants layer and inhibits bulk crystallization due to the chelation and directional adsorption. Bovine serum albumin promotes cake formation due to the low electrostatic repulsion and acts as a cement to particles by adsorption and bridging in bulk. This work fills the research gaps in mixed scaling of NF, which is believed to support the application of ZLD and shed light on scaling in hypersaline/ultra-hypersaline wastewater desalination applications.

Making waves: Magneto-responsive membranes with special and switchable wettability: new opportunities for membrane distillation

Membrane distillation (MD) has promising potential in the water purification and wastewater treatment industries; however, fouling and wetting are the main obstacles to its commercialization, and higher fluxes and energy efficiencies are essential. Magneto-responsive membranes (MagMem) with integrated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) enable in situ fouling mitigation and switchable separation by nano-mixing or nano-heating, triggered by external magnetic fields, in a range of membrane processes, but not yet been demonstrated in MD. This perspective discussed the potential paths of MagMem utilization in MD based on the research status and dilemmas of MD. It can be envisioned that MagMem will lead to a paradigm shift in MD, especially by in situ fouling/wetting mitigation and enhancing energy efficiency via in-place actuation and localized heating by MNPs. Moreover, remotely controllable pore tuning and specific or switchable wettability can also be anticipated. Overall, MagMem provides attractive opportunities for advanced robust and efficient MD.

New insights into the influence of pre-oxidation on membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water considering inorganic-organic complexation and oxidant reduction byproducts

Even though pre-oxidation is usually considered as a promising method to alleviate membrane fouling, information on performance and inner mechanisms of pre-oxidation-influenced membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water is still limited. This study is the first work in which oxidant reduction byproducts and interaction between different pollutants were particularly considered to address these problems. Herein, nanofiltration experiments with different pre-oxidized synthesis brackish water containing inorganic salts and organic pollutants were conducted. Membrane flux results showed that both NaClO and K2FeO4 aggravated membrane fouling, but 0.45 mg/mg TOC KMnO4 mitigated it when simulation results of NICA-Donnan model showed that the complexation between calcium ions and humic acid (HA) was weakened. However, membrane fouling was enhanced by higher dosage of KMnO4. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer using attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum showed that the aggravated membrane fouling was mainly caused by the generation of amorphous manganese oxide, which was oxidant reduction byproduct and had strong capacity for adsorption of HA. Particle size distribution and zeta potential variation indicated that the accumulation of HA could enhance the crystallization process and then the electrostatic attraction between membrane and bulk crystallization was induced. According to SEM images and fitting results of Hermia's models, the already-formed bulk crystallization by 1.90 mg/mg TOC KMnO4 could deposit on membranes more easily, followed by the formation of a denser fouling layer. Overall, the present study provided new insights into the design of reliable pre-oxidation strategies for alleviating membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor for hygiene wastewater treatment in controlled ecological life support systems: Degradation of surfactants and microbial community succession

The treatment and reuse of hygiene wastewater is crucial to "close the loop" in the controlled ecological life support system (CELSS), and to guarantee longer space missions or planetary habitation. In this work, anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was applied for hygiene wastewater treatment, focused on surfactant degradation and microbial community succession. The removal efficiency of COD and surfactants was 90%∼97% and 80% with a urine source-separation strategy. The microbial community gradually shifted from methanogens to sulfur-metabolizing and surfactant-degradation bacteria, such as Aeromonas. Sulfate was a surfactant degradation product, which triggered sulfate reduction and methane inhibition. The activated carbohydrate and sulfur metabolism were the key mechanism of the microbial process for the excellent performance of AnMBR. This study analyzed the degradation mechanism from the perspective of microbial mechanism, offers a solution for CELSS hygiene wastewater treatment, and supports the future improvement and refinement of AnMBR technology.

Effect of TiO2 on Thermal, Mechanical, and Gas Separation Performances of Polyetherimide-Polyvinyl Acetate Blend Membranes

Blend membranes consisting of two polymer pairs improve gas separation, but compromise mechanical and thermal properties. To address this, incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles has been suggested, to enhance interactions between polymer phases. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the impact of TiO2 as a filler on the thermal, surface mechanical, as well as gas separation properties of blend membranes. Blend polymeric membranes consisting of polyetherimide (PEI) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) with blend ratios of (99:1) and (98:2) were developed via a wet-phase inversion technique. In the latter, TiO2 was incorporated in ratios of 1 and 2 wt.% while maintaining a blend ratio of (98:2). TGA and DSC analyses were used to examine thermal properties, and nano-indentation tests were carried out to ascertain surface mechanical characteristics. On the other hand, a gas permeation set-up was used to determine gas separation performance. TGA tests showed that blend membranes containing TiO2 had better thermal characteristics. Indentation tests showed that TiO2-containing membranes exhibited greater surface hardness compared to other membranes. The results of gas permeation experiments showed that TiO2-containing membranes had better separation characteristics. PEI-PVAc blend membranes with 2 wt.% TiO2 as filler displayed superior separation performance for both gas pairs (CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2). The compatibility between the rubbery and glassy phases of blend membranes was improved as a result of the inclusion of TiO2, which further benefited their thermal, surface mechanical, and gas separation performances.

Influence of water quality factors on cake layer 3D structures and water channels during ultrafiltration process

The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the cake layer, which could be influenced by water quality factors, plays a significant role in the ultrafiltration (UF) efficiency of water purification. However, it remains challenging to precisely reveal the variation of cake layer 3D structures and water channel characteristics. Herein, we systematically report the variation in the cake layer 3D structure at the nanoscale induced by key water quality factors and reveal its influence on water transport, in particular the abundance of water channels within the cake layer. In comparison with pH and Na+, Ca2+ played more significant role in determining cake layer structures. The sandwich-like cake layer, which was induced by the asynchronous deposition of humic acids and sodium alginate (SA), shifted to an isotropic structure when Ca2+ was present due to the Ca2+ bridging. In comparison with the sandwich-like structure, the isotropic cake layer has higher fractions of free volume (voids) and more water channels, leading to a 147% improvement in the water transport coefficient, 60% reduction in the cake layer resistance, and 21% increase in the final membrane specific flux. Our work elucidates a structure-property relationship where improving the isotropy of the cake layer 3D structure is conducive to the optimization of water channels and water transport within cake layers. This could inspire tailored regulation strategies for cake layers to enhance the UF efficiency of water purification.

N-Doped porous carbons obtained from chitosan and spent coffee as electrocatalysts with tuneable oxygen reduction reaction selectivity for H2O2 generation

Nitrogen-containing porous carbons prepared by the pyrolysis of adequate biopolymer-based precursors have shown potential in several electrochemical energy-related applications. However, it is still of crucial interest to find the optimal precursors and process conditions which would allow the preparation of carbons with adequate porous structure as well as suitable nitrogen content and distribution of functional groups. In the present work we suggested a straightforward approach to prepare N-doped porous carbons by direct pyrolysis under nitrogen of chitosan : coffee blends of different compositions and using KOH for simultaneous surface activation. The synthetized carbon materials were tested for the electrochemical oxygen reduction to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). A higher fraction of chitosan in the precursor led to a decrease in meso- and nano-porosity of the formed porous carbons, while their activity towards H₂O₂ generation increased. The nitrogen species derived from chitosan seem to play a very important role. Out of the synthesized catalysts the one with the largest content of pyridinic nitrogen sites exhibited the highest faradaic efficiency. The faradaic efficiencies and current densities of the synthesized materials were comparable with the ones of other commercially available carbons obtained from less renewable precursors.

Cake layer 3D structure regulation to optimize water channels during Al-based coagulation-ultrafiltration process

The variation in cake layer three-dimensional (3D) structures and related water channel characteristics induced by coagulation pretreatment remains unclear; however, gaining such knowledge will aid in improving ultrafiltration (UF) efficiency for water purification. Herein, the regulation of cake layer 3D structures (3D distribution of organic foulants within cake layers) by Al-based coagulation pretreatment was analyzed at the micro/nanoscale. The sandwich-like cake layer of humic acids and sodium alginate induced without coagulation was ruptured, and foulants were gradually uniformly distributed within the floc layer (toward an isotropic structure) with increasing coagulant dosage (a critical dosage was observed). Furthermore, the structure of the foulant-floc layer was more isotropic when coagulants with high Al₁₃ concentrations were used (either AlCl₃ at pH 6 or polyaluminum chloride, in comparison with AlCl₃ at pH 8 where small-molecular-weight humic acids were enriched near the membrane). These high Al₁₃ concentrations lead to a 48.4% higher specific membrane flux than that seen for UF without coagulation. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that with increasing Al₁₃ concentration (Al₁₃: 6.2% to 22.6%), the water channels within the cake layer were enlarged and more connected, and the water transport coefficient was improved by up to 54.1%, indicating faster water transport. These findings demonstrate that facilitating an isotropic foulant-floc layer with highly connected water channels by coagulation pretreatment with high-Al₁₃-concentration coagulants (having a strong ability to complex organic foulants) is the key issue in optimizing the UF efficiency for water purification. The results should provide further understanding of the underlying mechanisms of coagulation-enhancing UF behavior and inspire precise design of coagulation pretreatment to achieve efficient UF.

Blend membranes comprising polyetherimide and polyvinyl acetate with improved methane enrichment performance

A clean and sustainable energy source, biogas is widely accessible worldwide. The caloric value of biogas is related to its methane content, and therefore removal of other gases is essential for reaping the benefits of this cleaner resource. In contrast to other classical techniques, membrane technology is relatively new yet extremely promising for methane enrichment. The methane enrichment performance of polymeric membranes is constrained, hence newer material combinations have been investigated to enhance membrane performance. In this study, blend membranes comprised of polyetherimide (PEI) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) in varying proportions were prepared by adopting the wet-phase inversion technique. The generated pure, and blend membranes were characterized for the morphological, thermal, and structural study. The interactions of PEI and PVAc in blend samples were verified by FTIR analysis. On the other hand, SEM investigation indicated that the membranes have an anisotropic porous structure with a dense skin layer at the top. Subsequently, a single glass transition temperature (T_g), as validated by DSC analysis, indicates that the blended polymers are miscible. Furthermore, membranes' performance for gas separation was assessed regarding selectivity and permeance at feed pressures ranging from 2 to 6 bar. The permeation results showed that the CO₂ permeance has increased by 40.47% with the addition of 4 wt % PVAc at 2 bar pressure. Furthermore, ideal selectivity improves as the blend ratio increases; nonetheless, the highest value for CO₂/CH₄ ideal selectivity was attained with a 2 wt % PVAc addition and at 2 bar pressure, which is approximately 26% greater than the pure PEI membrane. At 4 bar pressure, optimum CO₂/N₂ selectivity value of 22.50 was achieved. The findings indicate that PVAc is an excellent option for expanding the separation performance of blended polymeric membranes for biogas enrichment.

A New Interpretation of Gas Viscosity for Flow through Micro-Capillaries and Pores

The Hagen-Poiseuille equation for gas flow had never been derived theoretically; it is rather a simple analogy of the same for liquid flow, and "gas viscosity" is a measure for overall resistance to flow. In this work, experimental flow data for different gases through capillaries and porous media, reported in literature by different groups, including those measured and treated by Knudsen are treated with Hagen-Poiseuille equation, but taking "gas viscosity" as an adjustable parameter. It is found that, at constant temperature, there exists an unambiguous relation between the viscosity (µ) of a given gas, and the product of average pressure (P_av ) and capillary diameter (D). In addition, for P_{av *} D < 0.01, a universal linear relation exists between µ/M^0.5 (where M is molecular mass) for different gases and the parameter P_{av *} D. The new interpretation of gas viscosity avoids the differentiation of regimes into "Knudsen" and "viscous" flow as it is frequently done in literature. The concept can be applied to obtain a reliable data base for gas viscosities in different fields of applications, for example in microfluidic systems or the analysis of pore size distributions of filters and membranes by gas flow porometry.

How and why does time matter - A comparison of fouling caused by organic substances on membranes over adsorption durations

This study investigated the effect of time on the severity of adsorptive fouling on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface. Sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and humic acid (HA) were selected as representative membrane foulants. We examined the fouling behavior of these three selected model foulants over different adsorption durations (i.e., ~2300 and ~20,000 s). The fouling experiments were performed under conditions with and without the presence of Ca²⁺. For the SA-Ca²⁺ system, a longer adsorption duration slightly increased adsorption amount of SA but sharply reduced the reversibility (from 86.8 % to 12.9 %). For BSA-Ca²⁺, extended time did not change the deposition amount of BSA on the membrane surface, but led to more residual BSA after cleaning (reversibility decreased from 11.3 % to 4.5 %). Similarly, in the HA-Ca²⁺ system, adsorption duration barely influenced the adsorption amount of HA, while reduced its reversibility from 39.4 to 32.2 %. Therefore, time duration significantly influenced the amount and reversibility of membrane fouling depending on their chemical property. Corresponding results can be well reflected by a selected mathematical model. Further investigation on relevant mechanisms was conducted, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements indicated that longer adsorption duration resulted in more compacted fouling layer and stronger foulant-membrane interaction force. Our results suggest that time (adsorption duration) plays an important role in determining the reversibility of membrane fouling, while the severity is related to the inherent characteristics of foulants.

Membrane Life Cycle Management: An Exciting Opportunity for Advancing the Sustainability Features of Membrane Separations

Membrane science and technology is growing rapidly worldwide and continues to play an increasingly important role in diverse fields by offering high separation efficiency with low energy consumption. Membranes have also shown great promise for "green" separation. A majority of the investigations in the field are devoted to the membrane fabrication and modification with the ultimate goals of enhancing the properties and separation performance of membranes. However, less attention has been paid to membrane life cycle management, particularly at the end of service. This is becoming very important, especially taking into account the trends toward sustainable development and carbon neutrality. On the contrary, this can be a great opportunity considering the large variety of membrane processes, especially in terms of the size and capacity of plants in operation. This work aims to highlight the prominent aspects that govern membrane life cycle management with special attention to life cycle assessment (LCA). While fabrication, application, and recycling are the three key aspects of LCA, we focus here on membrane (module) recycling at the end of life by elucidating the relevant aspects, potential criteria, and strategies that effectively contribute to the achievement of green development and sustainability goals.

Maintaining Antibacterial Activity against Biofouling Using a Quaternary Ammonium Membrane Coupling with Electrorepulsion

Antibacterial modification is a chemical-free method to mitigate biofouling, but surface accumulation of bacteria shields antibacterial groups and presents a significant challenge in persistently preventing membrane biofouling. Herein, a great synergistic effect of electrorepulsion and quaternary ammonium (QA) inactivation on maintaining antibacterial activity against biofouling has been investigated using an electrically conductive QA membrane (eQAM), which was fabricated by polymerization of pyrrole with QA compounds. The electrokinetic force between negatively charged Escherichia coli and cathodic eQAM prevented E. coli cells from reaching the membrane surface. More importantly, cathodic eQAM accelerated the detachment of cells from the eQAM surface, particularly for dead cells whose adhesion capacity was impaired by inactivation. The number of dead cells on the eQAM surface was declined by 81.2% while the number of live cells only decreased by 49.9%. Characterization of bacteria accumulation onto the membrane surface using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance revealed that the electrorepulsion accounted for the cell detachment rather than inactivation. In addition, QA inactivation mainly contributed to minimizing the cell adhesion capacity. Consequently, the membrane fouling was significantly declined, and the final normalized water flux was promoted higher than 20% with the synergistic effect of electrorepulsion and QA inactivation. This work provides a unique long-lasting strategy to mitigate membrane biofouling.

Polystyrene Sulfonate Particles as Building Blocks for Nanofiltration Membranes

Today the standard treatment for wastewater is secondary treatment. This procedure cannot remove salinity or some organic micropollutants from water. In the future, a tertiary cleaning step may be required. An attractive solution is membrane processes, especially nanofiltration (NF). However, currently available NF membranes strongly reject multivalent ions, mainly due to the dielectric effect. In this work, we present a new method for preparing NF membranes, which contain negatively and positively charged domains, obtained by the combination of two polyelectrolytes with opposite charge. The negatively charged polyelectrolyte is provided in the form of particles (polystyrene sulfonate (PSSA), d ~300 nm). As a positively charged polyelectrolyte, polyethyleneimine (PEI) is used. Both buildings blocks and glycerol diglycidyl ether as crosslinker for PEI are applied to an UF membrane support in a simple one-step coating process. The membrane charge (zeta potential) and salt rejection can be adjusted using the particle concentration in the coating solution/dispersion that determine the selective layer composition. The approach reported here leads to NF membranes with a selectivity that may be controlled by a different mechanism compared to state-of-the-art membranes.

Progress in alumina ceramic membranes for water purification: Status and prospects

Ceramic membranes have gained increasing attention in recent years for the removal of various contaminants from water. Alumina membrane is considered as one of the most important ceramic membranes, which plays important roles not only in separation processes such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration, but also in catalysis- and adsorption- enhanced separation applications in water purification and wastewater treatment. However, there is currently still lack of a comprehensive critical review about alumina membranes for water purification. In this review, we first discuss recent developments of alumina membranes, and then critically introduce the state-of-the-art strategies for lowering fabrication cost, improving membrane performances and mitigating membrane fouling. Especially, aiming to improve membrane performance, some emerging methods are summarized such as tailoring membrane structure, developing flexible membranes, designing nano-pores for precise separation, and enhancing multi-functionalities. In addition, engineering applications of alumina membranes for water purification are also briefly introduced. Finally, the prospects for future research on alumina membranes are proposed, such as economic preparation/application, challenging precise separation, enriching multi-functionalities, and clarifying separation mechanisms.

A Reverse Osmosis Process to Recover and Recycle Trivalent Chromium from Electroplating Wastewater

Electroplating generates high volumes of rinse water that is contaminated with heavy metals. This study presents an approach for direct metal recovery and recycling from simulated rinse water, made up of an electroplating electrolyte used in industry, using reverse osmosis (RO). To simulate the real industrial application, the process was examined at various permeate fluxes, ranging from 3.75 to 30 L·m−2·h−1 and hydraulic pressures up to 80 bar. Although permeance decreased significantly with increasing water recovery, rejections of up to 93.8% for boric acid, >99.9% for chromium and 99.6% for sulfate were observed. The final RO retentate contained 8.40 g/L chromium and was directly used in Hull cell electroplating tests. It was possible to deposit cold-hued chromium layers under a wide range of relevant current densities, demonstrating the reusability of the concentrate of the rinsing water obtained by RO.

Development of Antifouling Polysulfone Membranes by Synergistic Modification with Two Different Additives in Casting Solution and Coagulation Bath: Synperonic F108 and Polyacrylic Acid

This study deals with the development of antifouling ultrafiltration membranes based on polysulfone (PSF) for wastewater treatment and the concentration and purification of hemicellulose and lignin in the pulp and paper industry. The efficient simple and reproducible technique of PSF membrane modification to increase antifouling performance by simultaneous addition of triblock copolymer polyethylene glycol-polypropylene glycol-polyethylene glycol (Synperonic F108, Mn =14 × 103 g mol-1) to the casting solution and addition of polyacrylic acid (PAA, Mn = 250 × 103 g mol-1) to the coagulation bath is proposed for the first time. The effect of the PAA concentration in the aqueous solution on the PSF/Synperonic F108 membrane structure, surface characteristics, performance, and antifouling stability was investigated. PAA concentrations were varied from 0.35 to 2.0 wt.%. Membrane composition, structure, and topology were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of PAA into the coagulation bath was revealed to cause the formation of a thicker and denser selective layer with decreasing its pore size and porosity; according to the structural characterization, an interpolymer complex of the two additives was formed on the surface of the PSF membrane. Hydrophilicity of the membrane selective layer surface was shown to increase significantly. The selective layer surface charge was found to become more negative in comparison to the reference membrane. It was shown that PSF/Synperonic F108/PAA membranes are characterized by better antifouling performance in ultrafiltration of humic acid solution and thermomechanical pulp mill (ThMP) process water. Membrane modification with PAA results in higher ThMP process water flux, fouling recovery ratio, and hemicellulose and total lignin rejection compared to the reference PSF/Synperonic F108 membrane. This suggests the possibility of applying the developed membranes for hemicellulose concentration and purification.

Soft synthetic microgels as mimics of mycoplasma

Artificial model colloids are of special interest in the development of advanced sterile filters, as they are able to efficiently separate pleomorphic, highly deformable and infectious bacteria such as mycoplasma, which, until now, has been considered rather challenging and laborious. This study presents a full range of different soft to super soft synthetic polymeric microgels, including two types with similar hydrodynamic mean diameter, i.e., 180 nm, and zeta potential, i.e., -25 ± 10 mV, but different deformability, synthesized by inverse miniemulsion terpolymerization of acrylamide, sodium acrylate and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. These microgels were characterized by means of dynamic, electrophoretic and static light scattering techniques. In addition, the deformability of the colloids was investigated by filter cake compressibility studies during ultrafiltration in dead-end mode, analogously to a study of real mycoplasma, i.e., Acholeplasma laidlawii, to allow for a direct comparison. The results indicate that the variation of the synthesis parameters, i.e., crosslinker content, polymeric solid content and content of sodium acrylate, has a significant impact on the swelling behavior of the microgels in aqueous solution as well as on their deformability under filtration conditions. A higher density of chemical crosslinking points results in less swollen and more rigid microgels. Furthermore, these parameters determine electrokinetic properties of the more or less permeable colloids. Overall, it is shown that these soft synthetic microgels can be obtained with tailor-made properties, covering the size of smallest species of and otherwise similar to real mycoplasma. This is a relevant first step towards the future use of synthetic microgels as mimics for mycoplasma.

Three-Dimensional Analysis of the Natural-Organic-Matter Distribution in the Cake Layer to Precisely Reveal Ultrafiltration Fouling Mechanisms

Cake layer formation is the dominant ultrafiltration membrane fouling mechanism after long-term operation. However, precisely analyzing the cake-layer structure still remains a challenge due to its thinness (micro/nano scale). Herein, based on the excellent depth-resolution and foulant-discrimination of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, a three-dimensional analysis of the cake-layer structure caused by natural organic matter was achieved at lower nanoscale for the first time. When humic substances or polysaccharides coexisted with proteins separately, a homogeneous cake layer was formed due to their interactions. Consequently, membrane fouling resistances induced by proteins were reduced by humic substances or polysaccharides, leading to a high flux. However, when humic substances and polysaccharides coexisted, a sandwich-like cake layer was formed owing to the asynchronous deposition based on molecular dynamics simulations. As a result, membrane fouling resistances were superimposed, and the flux was low. Furthermore, it is interesting that cake-layer structures were relatively stable under common UF operating conditions (i.e., concentration and stirring). These findings better elucidate membrane fouling mechanisms of different natural-organic-matter mixtures. Moreover, it is demonstrated that membrane fouling seems lower with a more homogeneous cake layer, and humic substances or polysaccharides play a critical role. Therefore, regulating the cake-layer structure by feed pretreatment scientifically based on proven mechanisms should be an efficient membrane-fouling-control strategy.

Concentration Polarization Enabled Reactive Coating of Nanofiltration Membranes with Zwitterionic Hydrogel

In this study, the bottleneck challenge of membrane fouling is addressed via establishing a scalable concentration polarization (CP) enabled and surface-selective hydrogel coating using zwitterionic cross-linkable macromolecules as building blocks. First, a novel methacrylate-based copolymer with sulfobetain and methacrylate side groups was prepared in a simple three-step synthesis. Polymer gelation initiated by a redox initiator system (ammonium persulfate and tetramethylethylenediamine) for radical cross-linking was studied in bulk in order to identify minimum ("critical") concentrations to obtain a hydrogel. In situ reactive coating of a polyamide nanofiltration membrane was achieved via filtration of a mixture of the reactive compounds, utilizing CP to meet critical gelation conditions solely within the boundary layer. Because the feasibility was studied and demonstrated in dead-end filtration mode, the variable extent of CP was estimated in the frame of the film model, with an iterative calculation using experimental data as input. This allowed to discuss the influence of parameters such as solution composition or filtration rate on the actual polymer concentration and resulting hydrogel formation at the membrane surface. The zwitterionic hydrogel-coated membranes exhibited lower surface charge and higher flux during protein filtration, both compared to pristine membranes. Salt rejection was found to remain unchanged. Results further reveal that the hydrogel coating thickness and consequently the reduction in membrane permeance due to the coating can be tuned by variation of filtration time and polymer feed concentration, illustrating the novel modification method's promising potential for scale-up to real applications.

Artificial Weathering Mechanisms of Uncoated Structural Polyethylene Terephthalate Fabrics with Focus on Tensile Strength Degradation

In the past five decades, reinforced coated textile membranes have been used increasingly as building materials, which are environmentally exposed. Thus, their weathering degradation over the service life must be taken into account in design, fabrication, and construction. Regarding such structural membranes, PVC (polyvinylchloride)-coated PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fabric is one of the most common commercially available types. This paper focuses on the backbone of it, i.e., the woven PET fabric. Herein, weathering of uncoated PET, as the load-bearing component of the composite PET-PVC, was studied. This study assessed the uniaxial tensile strength degradation mechanisms of uncoated PET fabric during artificial accelerated weathering tests. For this purpose, exploratory data analysis was carried out to analyze the chemical and physical changes which were traced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and molecular weight measurements. Finally, with the help of degradation mechanisms determined from the aforementioned evaluations, a degradation pathway network model was constructed. With that, the relationship between applied stress, mechanistic variables, structural changes, and performance level responses (tensile strength degradation) was assessed.

TETA-anchored graphene oxide enhanced polyamide thin film nanofiltration membrane for water purification; performance and antifouling properties

This work investigates the performance and structure of polyamide thin film nanocomposite (PA-TFN) membrane incorporated with triethylenetetramine-modified graphene oxide (GO-TETA). The embedment of GO-TETA nanosheets within the structure of PA-TFN membrane was evaluated at different concentrations (0.005, 0.01, 0.03 wt%; in aqueous piperazine (PIP)) through interfacial polymerization (IP). The physicochemical properties of the prepared membrane were investigated by SEM, AFM, water contact angle, and zeta potential as well as ATR-IR spectroscopy. The presence of longer chains of amino groups (in comparison with the directly linked amino ones) among the stacked GO nanosheets was assumed to increase interlayer spacing, resulting in remarkable changes in water permeance and separation behavior of modified polyamide (PA) membrane. It is seen that GO-TETA nanosheets were uniformly distributed in the matrix of PA layer. With increasing the concentration of GO-TETA, the flux of TFN membranes under 6 bar was increased from 49.8 l/m² h (no additive) to 73.2 l/m² h (TFN comprising 0.03 wt% GO-TETA. In addition, more loading GO-TETA resulted in a significant decrease in the average thickness of the polyamide layer from ~380 to ~150 nm. Furthermore, addition of GO-TETA improved the hydrophilicity of nanocomposite membranes, resulting in superb water flux recovery (antifouling indicator) as high as 95% after filtration of bovine serum albumin solution. Also, the retention capability of the TFN membranes towards some textile dyes increased as high as 99.6%.
