Suppression of photoreactivation of E. coli by excimer far-UV light (222 nm) via damage to multiple targets

Low-pressure mercury lamps emitting at 254 nm (UV254) are used widely for disinfection. However, subsequent exposure to visible light results in photoreactivation of treated bacteria. This study employed a krypton chloride excimer lamp emitting at 222 nm (UV222) to inactivate E. coli. UV222 and UV254 treatment had similar E. coli-inactivation kinetics. Upon subsequent irradiation with visible light, E. coli inactivated by UV254 was reactivated from 2.71-log to 4.75-log, whereas E. coli inactivated by UV222 showed negligible photoreactivation. UV222 treatment irreversibly broke DNA strands in the bacterium, whereas UV254 treatment primarily formed nucleobase dimers. Additionally, UV222 treatment caused cell membrane damage, resulting in wizened, pitted cells and permeability changes. The damage to the cell membrane was mainly due to the photolysis of proteins and lipids by UV222. Furthermore, the photolysis of proteins by UV222 destroyed enzymes, which blocked photoreactivation and dark repair. The multiple damages can be further evidenced by 4.0-61.1 times higher quantum yield in the photolysis of nucleobases and amino acids for UV222 than UV254. This study demonstrates that UV222 treatment damages multiple sites in bacteria, leading to their inactivation. Employing UV222 treatment as an alternative to UV254 could be viable for inhibiting microorganism photoreactivation in water and wastewater.

Single-atom Ag-loaded carbon nitride photocatalysts for efficient degradation of acetaminophen: The role of Ag-atom and O2

Carbon nitride has been extensively used as a visible-light photocatalyst, but it has the disadvantages of a low specific surface area, rapid electron-hole recombination, and relatively low light absorbance. In this study, single-atom Ag was successfully anchored on ultrathin carbon nitride (UTCN) via thermal polymerization, the catalyst obtained is called AgUTCN. The Ag hardly changed the carbon nitride's layered and porous physical structure. AgUTCN exhibited efficient visible-light photocatalytic performances in the degradation of various recalcitrant pollutants, eliminations of 85% were achieved by visible-light irradiation for 1 hr. Doping with Ag improved the photocatalytic performance of UTCN by narrowing the forbidden band gap from 2.49 to 2.36 eV and suppressing electron-hole pair recombination. In addition, Ag doping facilitated O2 adsorption on UTCN by decreasing the adsorption energy from -0.2 to -2.22 eV and favored the formation of O2·-. Electron spin resonance and radical-quenching experiments showed that O2·- was the major reactive species in the degradation of Acetaminophen (paracetamol, APAP).

Assessing the Chemical-Free Oxidation of Trace Organic Chemicals by VUV/UV as an Alternative to Conventional UV/H2O2

Low-pressure mercury lamps with high-purity quartz can emit both vacuum-UV (VUV, 185 nm) and UV (254 nm) and are commercially available and promising for eliminating recalcitrant organic pollutants. The feasibility of VUV/UV as a chemical-free oxidation process was verified and quantitatively assessed by the concept of H2O2 equivalence (EQH2O2), at which UV/H2O2 showed the same performance as VUV/UV for the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TOrCs). Although VUV showed superior H2O activation and oxidation performance, its performance highly varied as a function of light path length (Lp) in water, while that of UV/H2O2 proportionally decreased with decreasing H2O2 dose regardless of Lp. On increasing Lp from 1.0 to 3.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.81 to 0.22 mM H2O2. Chloride and nitrate hardly influenced UV/H2O2, but they dramatically inhibited VUV/UV. The competitive absorbance of VUV by chloride and nitrate was verified as the main reason. The inhibitory effect was partially compensated by •OH formation from the propagation reactions of chloride or nitrate VUV photolysis, which was verified by kinetic modeling in Kintecus. In water with an Lp of 2.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.43 to 0.17 mM (60.8% decrease) on increasing the chloride concentration from 0 to 15 mM and to 0.20 mM (53.5% decrease) at 4 mM nitrate. The results of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of VUV/UV oxidation in comparison to UV/H2O2, which underscores the suitability and efficiency of chemical-free oxidation with VUV/UV.

Ferrate(VI) assists in reducing cytotoxicity and genotoxicity to mammalian cells and organic bromine formation in ozonated wastewater

Ozonation of wastewater containing bromide (Br-) forms highly toxic organic bromine. The effectiveness of ozonation in mitigating wastewater toxicity is minimal. Simultaneous application of ozone (O3) (5 mg/L) and ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) (10 mg-Fe/L) reduced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity towards mammalian cells by 39.8% and 71.1% (pH 7.0), respectively, when the wastewater has low levels of Br-. This enhanced reduction in toxicity can be attributed to increased production of reactive iron species Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and reactive oxygen species (•OH) that possess higher oxidizing ability. When wastewater contains 2 mg/L Br-, ozonation increased cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 168%-180% and 150%-155%, respectively, primarily due to the formation of organic bromine. However, O3/Fe(VI) significantly (p < 0.05) suppressed both total organic bromine (TOBr), BrO3-, as well as their associated toxicity. Electron donating capacity (EDC) measurement and precursor inference using Orbitrap ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry found that Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and •OH enhanced EDC removal from precursors present in wastewater, inhibiting electrophilic substitution and electrophilic addition reactions that lead to organic bromine formation. Additionally, HOBr quenched by self-decomposition-produced H2O2 from Fe(VI) also inhibits TOBr formation along with its associated toxicity. The adsorption of Fe(III) flocs resulting from Fe(VI) decomposition contributes only minimally to reducing toxicity. Compared to ozonation alone, integration of Fe(VI) with O3 offers improved safety for treating wastewater with varying concentrations of Br-.

[Research progress on neurotoxicity induced by metal pollutants through astrocytes]

Metal pollutants in the natural environment and industrial environment can enter organisms through the respiratory tract and digestive tract causing adverse health effects. Many kinds of literatures confirm that metal pollutants have neurotoxicity. Recent studies have showed that astrocytes play an important role in neurotoxicity induced by metal pollutants. In this review, the latest progress of neurotoxicity induced by lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony and copper through astrocytes in recent years is summarized, which provides a new clue for the neurotoxicity research of metal pollutants.

Ozone, hydrogen peroxide, and peroxymonosulfate disinfection of MS2 coliphage in water

The control of viruses in water is critical to preventing the spread of infectious viral diseases. Many oxidants can inactivate viruses, and this study aims to systematically compare the disinfection effects of ozone (O3), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on MS2 coliphage. The effects of oxidant dose and contact time on disinfection were explored, as were the disinfection effects of three oxidizing agents in secondary effluent. The 4-log inactivation of MS2 coliphage required 0.05 mM O3, 0.5 mM PMS, or 25 mM H2O2 with a contact time of 30 min. All three oxidants achieved at least 4-log disinfection within 30 min, and O3 required only 0.5 min. In secondary effluent, all three oxidants also achieved 4-log inactivation of MS2 coliphage. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) results indicate that all three oxidants removed dissolved organic matter synchronously and O3 oxidized dissolved organic matter more thoroughly while maintaining disinfection efficacy. Considering the criteria of oxidant dose, contact time, and disinfection efficacy in secondary effluent, O3 is the best choice for MS2 coliphage disinfection among the three oxidants.

Molecular insight of dissolved organic matter and chlorinated disinfection by-products in reclaimed water during chlorination with permanganate preoxidation

Permanganate is a common preoxidant applied in water treatment to remove organic pollutants and to reduce the formation of disinfection by-products. However, the effect of permanganate preoxidation on the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) and on the formation of unknown chlorinated disinfection by-products (Cl-DBPs) during chlorination remains unknown at molecular level. In this work, the molecular changes of dEfOM during permanganate preoxidation and subsequent chlorination were characterized using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Permanganate preoxidation was found to decrease the DBE (double bond equivalent) and AImod (modified aromaticity index) of the dEfOM. The identity and fate of over 400 unknown Cl-DBPs during KMnO4-chlorine treatment were investigated. Most Cl-DBPs and the precursors were found to be highly unsaturated aliphatic and phenolic compounds. The Cl-DBPs precursors with lower H/C and lower O/C were preferentially removed by permanganate preoxidation. Additionally, permanganate preoxidation decreased the number of unknown Cl-DBPs by 30% and intensity of unknown Cl-DBPs by 25%. One-chlorine-containing DBPs were the major Cl-DBPs and had more CH2 groups and higher DBEw than Cl-DBPs containing two and three chlorine atoms. 60% of the Cl-DBPs formation was attributed to substitution reactions (i.e., +Cl-H, +2Cl-2H, +3Cl-3H, +ClO-H, +Cl2O3-2H). This work provides detailed molecular level information on the efficacy of permanganate preoxidation on the control of overall Cl-DBPs formation during chlorination.

Phototransformation of Brominated Disinfection Byproducts and Toxicity Elimination in Sunlit-Ozonated Reclaimed Water

Ozonation is universally used during water treatment but can form hazardous brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs). While sunlight exposure is advised to reduce the risk of Br-DBPs, their phototransformation pathways remain insufficiently understood. Here, sunlight irradiation was found to reduce adsorbable organic bromine by 63%. Applying high-resolution mass spectrometry, the study investigated transformations of dissolved organic matter in sunlit-ozonated reclaimed water, revealing the number and abundance of assigned formulas decreased after irradiation. The Br-DBPs with O/C < 0.6 and MW > 400 Da were decreased or removed after irradiation, with the majority being CHOBr compounds. The peak intensity reduction ratio of CHOBr compounds correlated positively with double bound equivalent minus oxygen ratios but negatively with O/C, suggesting that photo-susceptible CHOBr compounds were highly unsaturated. Mass difference analysis revealed that the photodegradation pathways were mainly oxidation aligned with debromination. Three typical CHOBr molecular structures were resolved, and their photoproducts were proposed. Toxicity estimates indicated decreased toxicity in these photoproducts compared to their parent compounds, in line with experimentally determined values. Our proposed phototransformation pathways for Br-DBPs enhance our comprehension of their degradation and irradiation-induced toxicity reduction in reclaimed water, further illuminating their transformation under sunlight in widespread environmental scenarios.

Multi-endpoint assays reveal more severe toxicity induced by chloraminated effluent organic matter than chloraminated natural organic matter

Disinfection by chloramination produces toxic byproducts and the difference in toxicity of reclaimed and drinking water treated by chloramination remains unclear. This study investigated cytotoxic effects at the same concentrations of dissolved organic matter and showed that chloraminated effluent organic matter (EfOM) induced 1.7 times higher cytotoxicity than chloraminated natural organic matter (NOM) applied to simulate drinking water. Chloraminated EfOM induced more reactive nitrogen species than chloraminated NOM, and chloraminated EfOM and NOM induced similar and higher levels of reactive oxygen species than the negative control, respectively. Consequently, intracellular macromolecule damage indicated by DNA/RNA damage marker 8‑hydroxy-(deoxy)guanosine and the intracellular protein carbonyl concentration induced by chloraminated EfOM was higher and slightly more than that induced by chloraminated NOM, respectively. These data were consistent with the effects on cell physiological processes. Cell cycle arrest mainly occurred in G2 phase by chloraminated EfOM and NOM. Early apoptotic cells, which could return to normal, increased upon exposure to high concentrations of chloraminated EfOM and NOM. Moreover, necrotic cells were significantly increased from 0.5% to 2.5% when the concentration increased from 20- to 60-fold chloraminated EfOM, but were not obviously changed by chloraminated NOM. These results indicated that the comprehensive intracellular changes induced by toxic substances in chloraminated EfOM were more irreversible and induced more cell death than chloraminated NOM.

[Efficacy of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for pseudomyxoma peritonei]

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the treatment of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Methods: In this descriptive case series study, we retrospective analyzed the records of PMP patients treated with CRS and HIPEC between January 2013 and June 2023 at Affiliated Cancer Hospital and Institute of Guangzhou Medical University. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) Aged 18 to 75 years and nonpregnant women. (2) Histologically confirmed diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei. (3) Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS)>70. (4) The functions of major organs such as the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys can tolerate major surgery for long periods of time. (5) No evidence of extra-abdominal metastasis. Patients with extensive intra-abdominal adhesions or severe infectious diseases were excluded. The main outcomes were overall survival (OS) and postoperative major complications. The postoperative major complications were graded according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (version 5.0). We used the peritoneal cancer index (PCI) score to quantitatively assess the peritoneal metastases and the completeness of cytoreduction (CCR) score at the end of surgery (CCR-0 and CCR-1 considered to be complete CRS). Results: A total of the 186 PMP patients with a median age of 56 (interquartile range extremes (IQRE), 48-64) years were included, 65 (34.9%) males and 121 (65.1%) females. The median peritoneal cancer index (PCI) score was 28 (20-34). Appendiceal origin accounted for 91.4%. Histological types were low grade in 99 patients (53.2%), high grade in 57 patients (30.6%), and 55 patients (29.6%) received complete cytoreduction (CCR-0/1). The median operative duration was 300 (211-430) minutes for all patients. Treatment-related 30-day mortality was 2.7%; 90-day mortality 4.3%; reoperation 1.6%; and severe morbidity 43.0%. Within the entire series, anemia(27.4%), electrolyte disturbance(11.6%), and hypoalbuminemia(7.5%) were the most frequent major complications (grade 3-4). The incidences of gastrointestinal anastomotic leakage, abdominal bleeding, and abdominal infection were 2.2%, 2.2%, and 4.3%, respectively. After a median follow-up of 38.1 (95%CI:31.2-45.1) months, the 5-year OS was 50.3% (95%CI: 40.7%-59.9%) with a median survival time of 66.1 (95%CI: 43.1-89.1) months. The survival analysis showed that patients with pathological low grade, low PCI, and low CCR score had better survival with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). Further stratified into complete and incomplete CRS subgroups, the 5-year OS of the CCR-0 and CCR-1 subgroups was 88.9% (95%CI: 68.3%-100.0%) and 77.6% (95%CI: 62.7%-92.5%), respectively; and 42.0% (95%CI: 29.5%-54.5%) in the CCR-2/3 subgroup. Conclusions: CRS and HIPEC may result in a long-term survival benefit for PMP patients with acceptable perioperative morbidity and mortality. This strategy, when complete CRS is possible, could significantly prolong survival for strictly selected patients at experienced centers.

Vacuum ultraviolet irradiation for reduction of the toxicity of wastewater towards mammalian cells: Removal mechanism, changes in organic compounds, and toxicity alternatives

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 + 254 nm) irradiation performs well for oxidation of model pollutants. However, oxidation of pollutants does not necessarily lead to a reduction in toxicity. Currently, a comprehensive understanding of the effect of VUV irradiation on the toxicity of real wastewater is still lacking. In this study, the influence of VUV irradiation on the toxicity of secondary effluents to Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was investigated. The induction units of endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in cells continuously decreased with prolonged irradiation time. After 36 min of irradiation, the cytotoxicity and the genotoxicity of the secondary effluents were reduced by 57%-63% and 56%-61%, respectively. The UV (254 nm), •OH, and other substances generated during the VUV irradiation directly drive toxicity changes of wastewater. The contribution of •OH generated during VUV irradiation to the reductions in cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the secondary effluents reached 72%-78% and 77%-84%, respectively. Hydroxyl radicals generated during VUV irradiation played an important role in the detoxification. The relative signal intensity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) > 500 Da was partially removed, whereas that of DOC < 500 Da was small changed. Since the content of DOC > 500 Da in the samples was much lower than that of DOC < 500 Da, the removal of total DOC was only 15.8%-20.0% after 36 min of irradiation. The UV254 values and the fluorescence intensity values for different molecular weights (MWs) were all reduced effectively by VUV irradiation. Electron-rich organic compounds of all MWs were all sensitive to VUV irradiation. There were mono-linear relationships between changes in chemical indexes and changes in cytotoxicity or genotoxicity. The total fluorescence intensity (Ex: 220-420 nm, Em: 280-560 nm) was identified as the best indicator of the reduction in toxicity.

Efficient removal of electroneutral carbonyls by combined vacuum-UV oxidation and anion-exchange resin adsorption: mechanism, model simulation, and optimization

Electroneutral carbonyls (ENCs) with low molecular weights (e.g., aldehydes and ketones) are recalcitrant to single water treatment process to achieve ultralow concentration. Residual ENCs are present in reverse osmosis permeate and pose risks to human health during potable use or industrial application in manufacturing processes. Herein, a combined vacuum-UV (VUV) oxidation and anion-exchange resin (AER) adsorption method was developed to treat the ENCs and reduce total organic carbon (TOC) to an ultralow concentration (< 5 μg/L) with high efficiency and at low cost. VUV-AER was 2.1-2.4 times more efficient than VUV alone for the removal of TOC. VUV oxidized the ENCs to electronegative carboxylic acids, which were adsorbed by the AER through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. When the VUV fluence was lower than 643 mJ cm-2, the AER could not achieve ultralow TOC removal of ENCs. The treat capacity of 1500-2900 valid bed volume (BVs) was achieved after increasing the VUV fluence to 1929 mJ cm-2. The AER could more efficiently adsorb carboxylic acids that contained more carboxylic groups or shorter carbon chain. Acetate was identified as the primary breakthrough product at relatively low VUV fluence, and oxalate was the main byproduct at relatively high VUV fluence. A mathematical model to predict TOC breakthrough was developed considering the VUV-oxidation kinetics and the AER breakthrough curve. The model was used to optimize the method to maximize TOC removal and minimize energy consumption. These results imply that VUV-AER is technically feasible and economically applicable to eliminate recalcitrant ENCs to ultralow concentration for the production of water requires high quality (e.g., potable water or electronic-grade ultrapure water).

The flavonoids induce the transcription of mRNA encoding erythropoietin in cultured embryonic stem cells via the accumulation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α

Flavonoids are the most common phytochemicals in vegetables and herbal products. The beneficial functions of flavonoids in the brain and erythropoietic system have been proposed. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a potent protective agent in the brain; but which has difficulty to cross the blood brain barrier (BBB). Here, about 60 flavonoids were screened for their potential activation on the transcription of EPO mRNA in the neuronal embryonic stem cell lines, NT2/D1 and PC12. Amongst the screened flavonoids, formononetin, calycosin, ononin, chrysin, baicalein and apigenin showed robust up regulation of EPO production via enhancement of hypoxia response element (HRE) activity in cultured embryonic stem cells. In addition, the flavonoids showed activation of HRE activity by having increased accumulation of HIF-1α, but not on level of HIF-1β, in the cultures. The accumulation of HIF-1α was attributed to up regulation of HIF-1α mRNA and blockade of HIF-1α degradation upon treatment of the flavonoids. These results suggested a promising trend of developing commercial products of flavonoids as food supplements tailored for brain health.

Reduction of byproduct formation and cytotoxicity to mammalian cells during post-chlorination by the combined pretreatment of ferrate(VI) and biochar

Ferrate [Fe(VI)] can efficiently degrade various pollutants in wastewater. Biochar application can reduce resource use and waste emission. This study investigated the performance of Fe(VI)/biochar pretreatment to reduce disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and cytotoxicity to mammalian cells of wastewater during post-chlorination. Fe(VI)/biochar was more effective at inhibiting the cytotoxicity formation than Fe(VI) alone, reducing the cytotoxicity from 12.7 to 7.6 mg-phenol/L. The concentrations of total organic chlorine and total organic bromine decreased from 277 to 130 μg/L and from 51 to 39 μg/L, compared to the samples without pretreatment. Orbitrap ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry revealed that the number of molecules of DBPs decreased substantially from 517 to 229 by Fe(VI)/biochar, with the greatest reduction for phenols and highly unsaturated aliphatic compounds. In combination with the substantial reduction of 1Cl-DBPs and 2Cl-DBPs, 1Br-DBPs and 2Br-DBPs were also reduced. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis suggested that fulvic acid-like substances and aromatic amino acid was obviously reduce likely due to the enhanced oxidation of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) produced by Fe(VI)/biochar and adsorption of biochar. Furthermore, the DBPs generated by electrophilic addition and electrophilic substitution of precursors were reduced. This study shows that Fe(VI)/biochar pretreatment can effectively reduce cytotoxicity formation during post-chlorination by transforming DBPs and their precursors.

Ozone micro-bubble aeration using the ceramic ultrafiltration membrane with superior oxidation performance for 2, 4-D elimination

Micro-bubble aeration is an efficient way to promote ozonation performance, but the technology is challenged by extensive energy cost. Here, a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane was used to achieve ozone micro-bubble (0-80 µm) aeration in a simple way at gaseous pressures of 0.14-0.19 MPa. Compared with milli-bubble aeration, micro-bubble aeration increased the equilibrium aquatic O3 concentrations by 1.53-3.25 times and apparent O3 transfer rates by 3.12-3.35 times at pH 5.0-8.0. Consequently, the •OH yield was 2.67-3.54 times via faster O3 transfer to the aquatic solution followed by decomposition rather than interfacial reaction. Ozone micro-bubble aeration outperformed milli-bubble aeration, with the degradation kinetics of 2,4-D being 3.08-4.36 times higher. Both O3-oxidation and •OH oxidation were important to the promotion with the contributions being 35.8%-45.9% and 54.1%-64.2%, respectively. The operational and water matric conditions influenced the oxidation performance via both O3 oxidation and •OH oxidation, which is reported for the first time. In general, the ceramic membrane offered a low-energy approach of ozone micro-bubble aeration for efficient pollutant degradation. The O3 oxidation and •OH oxidation were proportionally promoted by ozone micro-bubble due to O3 transfer enhancement. Thus, the promotive mechanism can be interpreted as the synchronous enchantment on ozone exposure and •OH exposure for the first time.

PPCP degradation by ammonia/chlorine: Efficiency, radical species, and byproducts formation

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are frequently detected in water bodies and have potential risks to human health and the ecosystem. The degradation of eight structurally diverse PPCPs by ammonia/chlorine was systematically investigated in this study. Compared with chlorination, ammonia/chlorine markedly enhanced PPCP degradation, and the degradation efficiencies of most PPCPs were greater than 70%. Tert-butanol strongly suppressed PPCP degradation, while bicarbonate suppressed it moderately, suggesting the importance of ClO⋅and ⋅CO₃^- in PPCP degradation. In neutral conditions, PPCP degradation was mainly attributed to ⋅OH, with its contribution ranging from 74% to 100% at a Cl₂/N molar ratio of 1.6. Regarding the effect of natural organic matter, atrazine and primidone were inhibited the most, while carbamazepine (CBZ), metoprolol (MTP), and atenolol (ATN) were affected the least. PPCP degradation was suppressed in reclaimed water; the degradation of CBZ, MTP, and ATN was suppressed the least, with degradation efficiencies of 77.1%-85.4%, 75.1%-77.1%, and 64.6%-68.8%, respectively. Furthermore, compared with chlorination, fewer volatile halogenated byproducts were formed in reclaimed water when using the ammonia/chlorine process, and the concentration of each byproduct formed by ammonia/chlorine was less than 10 µg/L. This study suggests the feasibility of using ammonia/chlorine oxidation to degrade PPCPs in reclaimed water.

Oxygen doping of cobalt-single-atom coordination enhances peroxymonosulfate activation and high-valent cobalt-oxo species formation

The high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)=O) is being increasingly investigated for water purification because of its high redox potential, long half-life, and antiinterference properties. However, generation of Co(IV)=O is inefficient and unsustainable. Here, a cobalt-single-atom catalyst with N/O dual coordination was synthesized by O-doping engineering. The O-doped catalyst (Co-OCN) greatly activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and achieved a pollutant degradation kinetic constant of 73.12 min-1 g-2, which was 4.9 times higher than that of Co-CN (catalyst without O-doping) and higher than those of most reported single-atom catalytic PMS systems. Co-OCN/PMS realized Co(IV)=O dominant oxidation of pollutants by increasing the steady-state concentration of Co(IV)=O (1.03 × 10-10 M) by 5.9 times compared with Co-CN/PMS. A competitive kinetics calculation showed that the oxidation contribution of Co(IV)=O to micropollutant degradation was 97.5% during the Co-OCN/PMS process. Density functional theory calculations showed that O-doping influenced the charge density (increased the Bader charge transfer from 0.68 to 0.85 e), optimized the electron distribution of the Co center (increased the d-band center from -1.14 to -1.06 eV), enhanced the PMS adsorption energy from -2.46 to -3.03 eV, and lowered the energy barrier for generation of the key reaction intermediate (*O*H2O) during Co(IV)=O formation from 1.12 to 0.98 eV. The Co-OCN catalyst was fabricated on carbon felt for a flow-through device, which achieved continuous and efficient removal of micropollutants (degradation efficiency of >85% after 36 h operation). This study provides a new protocol for PMS activation and pollutant elimination through single-atom catalyst heteroatom-doping and high-valent metal-oxo formation during water purification.

Roles of radical species in vacuum-UV/UV/peroxydisulfate advanced oxidation processes and contributions of the species to contaminant degradation at different water depths

Vacuum-UV (VUV) (wavelength 185 nm)/ UV (wavelength 254 nm) are applied to improve performances of UV-based advanced oxidation processes. However, the improvements were strongly affected by water depth because of poor VUV transmittance in water. In this study, VUV/UV and peroxydisulfate (PDS) were used to degrade carbamazepine. More SO₄^•- oxidation occurred in VUV/UV/PDS than VUV/UV with similar ^•OH oxidation occurring. The additional SO₄^•- oxidation could be caused by VUV/PDS in superficial water or UV/PDS in deeper water. The synergistic factor for VUV/UV/PDS processes relative to VUV/UV and UV/PDS processes was 1.32. VUV/UV/PDS performances were affected by competition for photon absorption by dissolved organic matter (32-58 % inhibition), radical quenching by CO₃^2-/HCO₃^- and NO₃^-, and conversion of ^•OH and SO₄^•- into reactive chlorine species by Cl^-. Radical probe experiments and steady-state kinetic modeling simulations indicated that 34 %, 25 %, and 40 % of carbamazepine degradation occurring in 2-cm-deep bulk solution was due to ^•OH oxidation through VUV/H₂O, SO₄^•- oxidation through VUV/PDS, and SO₄^•- oxidation through UV/PDS, respectively. Contribution of VUV-driven processes decreased with increasing water depth and became equivalent to contribution of 3.5-cm-deep UV-driven processes, which indicated the importance of optimizing water depth in VUV/UV-advanced oxidation process reactors.

Overlooked Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity to Mammalian Cells Caused by the Oxidant Peroxymonosulfate during Wastewater Treatment Compared with the Sulfate Radical-Based Ultraviolet/Peroxymonosulfate Process

Byproduct formation (chlorate, bromate, organic halogen, etc.) during sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based processes like ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) has aroused widespread concern. However, hypohalous acid (HOCl and HOBr) can form via two-electron transfer directly from PMS, thus leading to the formation of organic halogenated byproducts as well. This study found both PMS alone and UV/PMS can increase the toxicity to mammalian cells of wastewater, while the UV/H₂O₂ decreased the toxicity. Cytotoxicity of two wastewater samples increased from 5.6-8.3 to 15.7-29.9 mg-phenol/L, and genotoxicity increased from 2.8-3.1 to 5.8-12.8 μg 4-NQO/L after PMS treatment because of organic halogen formation. Organic halogen formation from bromide rather than chloride was found to dominate the toxicity increase. The SO₄^•--based process UV/PMS led to the formation of both organic halogen and inorganic bromate and chlorate. However, because of the very low concentration (<20 μg/L) and relatively low toxicity of bromate and chlorate, contributions of inorganic byproducts to toxicity increase were negligible. PMS would not form chlorate and bromate, but it generated a higher concentration of total organic halogen, thus leading to a more toxic treated wastewater than UV/PMS. UV/PMS formed less organic halogen and toxicity because of the destruction of byproducts by UV irradiation and the removal of byproduct precursors. Currently, many studies focused on the byproducts bromate and chlorate during SO₄^•--based oxidation processes. This work revealed that the oxidant PMS even needs more attention because it caused higher toxicity due to more organic halogen formation.

Changes in toxicity and adsorbable organic bromine concentrations in ozonated reclaimed water irradiated with sunlight

Disinfecting reclaimed water for safe reuse can produce toxic disinfection by-products such as adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr). Irradiating stored reclaimed water with sunlight is a "green" and free method for eliminating some toxic disinfection by-products, but the effects of irradiation with sunlight on ozonated reclaimed water containing bromide are not well understood. In this study, AOBr was found at concentrations of 171-180 (µg Br)/L in ozonated reclaimed water containing bromide at a concentration of 2 (mg Br)/L and dissolved organic carbon at a concentration of ∼5 (mg C)/L. Irradiation with sunlight degraded 53-74% of the AOBr in two reclaimed water samples in 8 h, and the pseudo-first-order rate constants (k) were 0.09-0.17 h^-1. The concentration of tribromomethane, a typical Br-containing disinfection by-product, was decreased by >96% by irradiation for 8 h (k = 0.42-0.47 h^-1). Irradiation with sunlight decreased the toxicity of ozonated reclaimed water to Chinese hamster ovary cells. Irradiation with sunlight decreased the degree of intracellular oxidative stress and oxidative damage caused by ozonated reclaimed water. Irradiation with sunlight for 8 h decreased cytotoxicity of the ozonated reclaimed water samples by 79% and 65%. The change in AOBr concentration correlated with the change in toxicity (R²=0.69, p<0.05). The relationships between sunlight wavelength and decreases in the AOBr concentration and toxicity were assessed, and it was found that UV in sunlight was predominantly responsible for decreasing the AOBr concentration and toxicity by reclaimed water. During irradiation for 8 h, UV was responsible for 65%-66% of the decrease in the AOBr concentration and 65-79% of the decrease in reclaimed water induced cytotoxicity. Irradiation with sunlight is a promising method for degrading AOBr and detoxifying ozonated reclaimed water during storage to allow the water to be reused.

VUV/UV oxidation performance for the elimination of recalcitrant aldehydes in water and its variation along the light-path

Vacuum ultraviolet/ultraviolet (VUV/UV) oxidation using a low-pressure mercury lamp emitting dual wavelengths (185 nm (VUV) and 254 nm (UV)) significantly varies in performance along the light-path (l_P), which has not been fully characterized. Therefore, VUV/UV oxidation in solution was investigated at various l_P in terms of the degradation kinetics and mineralization pathway of representative aldehydes with various alkyl-chain lengths. Oxidative degradation of parent aldehydes with shorter alkyl chains was less efficient, specifically the pseudo-zero-order rate constant (k_obs) of formaldehyde was only 51% of that of propionaldehyde (k_obs = 0.078 μM s^-1). In contrast, the mineralization of aldehydes with longer alkyl chains was less efficient because these aldehydes underwent mineralization into more refractory carboxylic byproducts, e.g., oxalic acid. VUV was mainly absorbed by superficial water (l_P < 0.55 cm), which resulted in highly heterogeneous oxidation in homogeneous water. Thus, k_obs of acetaldehyde dramatically decreased from 0.13 to 0.033 μM s^-1 as the total l_P of solution increased from 1.0 to 3.0 cm. On the basis of mineralization pathways proposed above, an iterative kinetic model was developed to characterize the degradation of parent aldehydes and the formation of carboxylic acids along l_P. This model predicted the VUV/UV oxidaton for the first time by considering the fast diffusion of pollutants by limited diffusion of transient radical species. Thus, it realized the prediction of ^•OH concentration at specific water solution and byproduct evolution within specific water solution in turbulent flow regime, wherein ^•OH was predominantly formed in superficial water-layers wherein ^•OH in water-layers of l_P <0.16 cm and <0.81 cm contributed to 50% and 90% of the total oxidation performance, respectively. This result would help to improve the VUV-UV-reactor design in terms of optimizing the thickness of water-layer and turbulence of water-flow.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide Catalyzed by Carbon Nanotubes with Surface Co-NX Sites and Encapsulated Co Nanoparticles

The exploitation of M-N_X sites, where M is a transition metal atom, is widely regarded as an effective catalytic strategy to promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, some studies have shown that transition metal nanoparticles (M-NPs) coated with carbon layers can improve the reactivity of ORR and ameliorate the overpotential of the reaction. In this study, we synthesized carbon nanotubes with single-atom Co-N_X active sites, Co-NPs outside the tube, and Co-NPs wrapped in the tube by the complexation-pyrolysis synthesis method and explored the role of the particles and Co-N_X sites through different pickling steps. The catalyst synthesized with the new stratagem in this study shows outstanding selectivity and also ORR activity. Furthermore, a natural air diffusion electrode fabricated using this material can produce H₂O₂ at 323 mg L^-1 h^-1 under neutral conditions without oxygen aeration.

Chlorination of isothiazolinone biocides: kinetics, reactive species, pathway, and toxicity evolution

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the worldwide biocides application has been increased, which will eventually result in enhanced residuals in treated wastewater. At the same time, chlorine disinfection of secondary effluents and hospital wastewaters has been intensified. With respect to predicted elevated exposure in wastewater, the chlorination kinetics, transformation pathways and toxicity evolution were investigated in this study for two typical isothiazolinone biocides, methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT). Second-order rate constants of 0.13 M^-1·s^-1, 1.95 × 10⁵ M^-1·s^-1 and 5.14 × 10⁵ M^-1·s^-1 were determined for the reaction of MIT with HOCl, Cl₂O and Cl₂, respectively, while reactivity of CMIT was around 1-2 orders of magnitude lower. While chlorination of isothiazolinone biocides at pH 7.1 was dominated by Cl₂O-oxidation, acidic pH and elevated Cl^- concentration favored free active chlorine (FAC) speciation into Cl₂ and increased overall isothiazolinone removal. Regardless of the dominant FAC species, the elimination of MIT and CMIT resulted in an immediate loss of acute toxicity under all experimental conditions, which was attributed to a preferential attack at the S-atom resulting in subsequent formation of sulfoxides and sulfones and eventually an S-elimination. However, chlorination of isothiazolinone biocides in secondary effluent only achieved <10% elimination at typical disinfection chlorine exposure 200 mg·L^-1·min, but was predicted to be remarkably increased by acidizing solution to pH 5.5. Alternative measures might be needed to minimize the discharge of these toxic chemicals into the aquatic environment.

Degradation of chloromethylisothiazolinone antimicrobial by Vacuum-Ultraviolet/Ultraviolet irradiation: Reactive species, degradation pathway and toxicity evaluation

Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) has been extensively used as antimicrobial in cosmetics, detergents, wall paints, and anti-fouling products. To prevent the potential ecological and health risks, the degradation mechanisms and toxicity changes of CMIT by Vacuum-Ultraviolet/Ultraviolet (VUV/UV) irradiation were investigated in this study. VUV/UV irradiation showed better performance on CMIT degradation compared to sole UV photolysis. The removal efficiency of CMIT with photon fluence of 0.6 μEinstein/cm² was 8% and 100% by UV or VUV/UV irradiation, respectively. Radical quenching experiments indicated that 254 nm photolysis, 185 nm photolysis, and •OH oxidation contributed to CMIT degradation during VUV/UV process, with fluence-based apparent rate constants of 0.16, 0.13, and 4.9 μEinstein^-1cm², respectively. The formation of H₂O₂ during VUV/UV process increased to 0.7 mg/L at 4.5 min, and the concentration of •OH ranged within 1.0-3.8 × 10^-12 M. The degradation of CMIT by VUV/UV irradiation in neutral condition was slightly higher than that in acidic and basic conditions. The removal efficiency of CMIT with reaction time of 2 min decreased from 92.2% to 34.3% when the concentration of HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- increased to 1 mM. The degradation of CMIT by VUV/UV irradiation in secondary effluents was lower than that in ultrapure water because of the •OH scavenging effects, but still 2.9 times higher than that by UV photolysis. Four main degradation mechanisms of CMIT were observed during VUV/UV process, including the oxidation of sulfur, addition of hydroxyl groups on the double-carbon-bond, demethylation on the nitrogen, and substitution of organochlorine atom by hydroxyl group. Based on the quantitative structure activity relationship analysis, most products of CMIT underwent complete detoxification to fish and daphnia. 40% of products still showed acute toxicity to algae, but most of them were less toxic than CMIT.

Removal of methylisothiazolinone biocide from wastewater by VUV/UV advanced oxidation process: Kinetics, mechanisms and toxicity

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is frequently used as antimicrobial in household and industrial products, and poses ecological and health risks to aquatic organisms and humans. In this study, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was found highly efficient for removal of MIT. The rate constant of MIT degradation (k_obs) under VUV/UV irradiation was 3.75 μEinstein^-1 cm², which was around 12.5 times higher than that under UV irradiation. The •OH concentration during the VUV/UV process was 1.0 × 10^-12 M. The contributions of UV photolysis and •OH oxidation to MIT degradation under VUV/UV irradiation were 7.3% and 92.7%, respectively. The optimum solution pH (6.0-7.1) gave k_obs 33%-39% higher than those at pH 3.9 and 9.3. CO₃^2-/HCO₃^- inhibited MIT degradation and the k_obs decreased by 74% when the concentration of CO₃^2-/HCO₃^- was increased to 1 mM. The order of MIT removal efficiency under VUV/UV irradiation was ultrapure water > secondary effluent > reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate, because of the light screening and •OH quenching effect of actual wastewater. In RO concentrate, the rate constant of MIT degradation under VUV/UV irradiation was 22% higher than that obtained under UV irradiation. The reduction of TOC, UV₂₅₄, and total fluorescence regional integration of the RO concentrate during VUV/UV process were 7.2%, 34.9%, and 52.3%, respectively. Twelve main transformation products of MIT were identified after VUV/UV degradation. The main degradation mechanisms of MIT were sulfur atom oxidation and hydroxyl addition. Quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis showed that VUV/UV degradation was an efficient method to remove the toxicity of MIT.

Effects of chlorine dose on the composition and characteristics of chlorinated disinfection byproducts in reclaimed water

During chlorination of reclaimed water, the dose of chlorine used can influence the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (Cl-DBPs). We used non-targeted screening by Orbitrap mass spectrometry to identify Cl-DBPs in samples of chlorinated reclaimed water, and found that chlorination was likely to form slightly oxidized unsaturated aliphatic compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds. Increasing the chlorine dose increased the proportion of polycyclic aromatic Cl-DBPs containing one chlorine atom (Cl₁-DBPs) and highly oxidized unsaturated aliphatic Cl-DBPs containing two chlorine atoms (Cl₂-DBPs). In addition, increasing the chlorine dose first decreased and then increased the proportion of Cl₁-DBPs with aromatic index values >0.5 and increased the proportion of Cl₂-DBPs with aromatic index values <0.5. Increasing the chlorine dose increased double bond equivalent minus oxygen values of Cl₁-DBPs and decreased the double bond equivalent minus oxygen values of Cl₂-DBPs, while the nominal oxidant state of carbon decreased for Cl₁-DBPs and increased for Cl₂-DBPs. In considering the possible precursors of Cl-DBPs and their reaction pathways, substitution reactions occurred more readily with aliphatic compounds and addition reactions occurred more readily with aromatic precursors. When the chlorine dose is increased, more Cl₂-DBPs may be formed by substitution. Overall, the chlorine dose influences Cl-DBP formation and composition and should be taken into account during water treatment.

Characteristics of the formation and toxicity index of nine newly identified brominated disinfection byproducts during wastewater ozonation

Ozonation plays an important role in wastewater treatment for reuse. However, the toxicity of wastewater treated with ozone considerably increases with bromide (Br^-) concentration >100 μg/L. Nine newly identified brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) that are highly toxic in ozonated Br^--containing wastewater were found in our recent work, including 2-bromostyrene, 1-bromo-1-phenylethylene, 2-bromobenzaldehyde, 3-bromobenzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, 2-bromophenylacetonitrile, 3-bromophenylacetonitrile, 4-bromophenylacetonitrile, and 2,4,6-tribromophenol. In the present study, the formation and calculated toxicity index of the nine newly identified Br-DBPs were evaluated. The correlations between the water quality index and the formation of nine Br-DBPs were also analyzed. With the increase of ozone dosage, the concentrations of bromostyrenes, 3-bromobenzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, 2-bromophenylacetonitrile, and 2,4,6-tribromophenyl in the ozonated samples gradually increased. With the increase of Br^- concentration, the concentrations of bromostyrene, 2-bromobenzaldehyde, and 2,4,6-tribromophenol gradually increased. With the increase of NH₄⁺ concentration, the concentrations of bromophenylacetonitriles gradually increased. Among the nine Br-DBPs, the bromophenylacetonitriles and 2,4,6-tribromophenol contributed the most to the cytotoxicity index, 2,4,6-tribromophenol and bromostyrenes contributed the most to the genotoxicity index, and bromophenylacetonitriles and bromostyrenes contributed the most to the oxidative damage index. The dissolved organic carbon levels strongly correlated with the formation of 3-bromophenylacetonitrile and 4-bromophenylacetonitrile, and the fluorescence I-V region intensity integral was correlated with the formation of 4-bromobenzaldehyde and 2,4,6-tribromophenol. The results of the present study clarified the formation potential of the nine widely existing newly identified Br-DBPs, confirmed the high calculated toxicity indices, and are of great value for future research on Br-DBPs.

Promotive effects of vacuum-UV/UV (185/254 nm) light on elimination of recalcitrant trace organic contaminants by UV-AOPs during wastewater treatment and reclamation: A review

The use of vacuum-UV/UV (185/254 nm) for trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) elimination during wastewater treatments has attracted much attention. Advanced oxidation processes which combine VUV/UV and additional oxidants (vacuum-UV/UV-based advanced oxidation processes, VUV/UV-AOPs) provide a promising method for eliminating recalcitrant and toxic TOrCs for wastewater reclamation. Researches in this area are increasing but the promoting effects, mechanisms, and influencing factors have not been well summarized. A comprehensive discussion of the limitations of this technique and future research directions is needed. VUV/UV-AOPs have considerable synergistic effects by increasing usage of VUV/UV photons and the oxidant, which increases radical generation. In terms of elimination kinetics, VUV/UV-AOPs outperform conventional UV-AOPs and VUV/UV processes in most cases; a 1.2-87.7-fold increase of the fluence-based kinetic constant is achieved. In terms of energy efficiency per order (EE/O) of TOrCs elimination, the EE/O of VUV/UV-AOPs only accounts for 4% of UV-AOPs and 63% of VUV/UV. However, VUV/UV-AOPs still need to be further investigated. Firstly, although VUV and UV processes have similar radical formation pathways, limited information is available on the quantum yields of photolysis and radical formation of oxidants under VUV irradiation. Secondly, optimization of VUV/UV-AOPs operating conditions, especially oxidant dosage and water-flow patterns, is needed. Thirdly, VUV/UV-AOPs are significantly inhibited by organic and inorganic matters, but the mechanisms of inhibition on VUV/UV scattering, radical quenching, and radical conversion are not well understood. Such inhibition suggests that the use of VUV/UV-AOPs would be limited to relatively clear water treatment, e.g., reverse osmosis effluent for potable water reuse and ultrapure water production. Related research is needed to establish a clearer scheme for VUV/UV-AOPs in terms of the spatial distribution of radical species in the VUV/UV irradiation system and the relevant optimization method for promoting oxidation performance.

Novel chlorinated disinfection byproducts from tannic acid: nontargeted identification, formation pathways, and computationally predicted toxicity

Tannic acid is ubiquitously present in various simulated and real water sources and in wastewater. Various chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs) are generated via reactions with tannic acid during disinfection with chlorine. We used high-resolution mass spectrometry in combination with our self-developed halogen extraction code to selectively identify Cl-DBPs. Our strategy enabled successful detection of 35 Cl-DBP formulas formed by chlorination of tannic acid, and we identified 26 of these structures. The structures of 17 novel Cl-DBPs are firstly reported here. The reaction pathways of these Cl-DBPs were tentatively proposed. These Cl-DBPs are likely to be generated during chlorination at various chlorine doses, from 0.0 to 10.0 mg-Cl₂/L, and 14 of the 26 Cl-DBPs were detected in simulated drinking water, which implies a relatively high probability of incidence. Quantitative structure-activity relationship toxicity analyses predicted that most of these Cl-DBPs would exhibit much higher acute toxicity than the common DBPs trichloromethane and monochloroacetic acid and that some of these compounds would induce developmental toxicity and be mutagenic, which further emphasizes that these Cl-DBPs should raise concerns. This study broadens our understanding of the Cl-DBPs formed from tannic acid and should prompt wider application of our analytical strategy in environmental matrices.

Elimination of amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) antiscalant in reverse osmosis concentrate using ozone: Anti-precipitation property changes and phosphorus removal

Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) was widely used as an antiscalant in reverse osmosis (RO) systems to prevent membrane scaling, and entered RO concentrate at elevated levels. However, phosphonate antiscalants in RO concentrate might aggravate phosphorus pollution, remobilize heavy metals, and adversely affect the sedimentation treatment of RO concentrate. Ozonation was found an efficient method for ATMP treatment. The ATMP removal efficiencies with 8 mg/L ozone were 100% and 86.5% for ultrapure water and RO concentrate, respectively. The ATMP mineralization efficiency reached 46.5% with 8 mg/L ozone. The rate constant for the reaction between ATMP and ozone was 1.92 × 10⁶ M^-1 s^-1. Increasing the pH from 3 to 9 decreased the ATMP removal efficiency from 90% to 30.9% but increased the orthophosphate formation to ATMP removal ratio from 0.11 to 0.48. The ATMP intermediates generated with low ozone dosages exhibited moderate chelation and anti-precipitation capacity, and their chelation and anti-precipitation capacity could be further attenuated by increasing the ozone dosage. Ozonation alone enhanced the growth potential for microalgae in RO concentrate because orthophosphate formed. Combining ozonation and coagulation effectively removed 83.0% of the total phosphorus from RO concentrate. The maximum algal density of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 decreased by 78.7% by ozonation and coagulation.

Synergistic effects of ozone/peroxymonosulfate for isothiazolinone biocides degradation: Kinetics, synergistic performance and influencing factors

Synergistic effects of ozone (O₃) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO₅^-) for isothiazolinone biocides degradation was studied. The synergistic ozonation process (O₃/PMS) increased the efficiency of methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT) degradation to 91.0% and 81.8%, respectively, within 90 s at pH 7.0. This is 30.6% and 62.5% higher than the corresponding ozonation efficiency, respectively. Total radical formation value (R_ct,R) for the O₃/PMS process was 24.6 times that of ozonation alone. Calculated second-order rate constants for the reactions between isothiazolinone biocides and (k_SO4-,MIT and k_SO4-,CMIT) were 8.15 × 10⁹ and 4.49 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. Relative contributions of O₃, hydroxyl radical (OH) and oxidation to MIT and CMIT removal were estimated, which were 15%, 45%, and 40% for O₃, OH and oxidation to MIT, and 1%, 67%, and 32% for O₃, OH and oxidation to CMIT at pH 7.0, respectively. Factors influencing the O₃/PMS process, namely the solution pH, chloride ions (Cl^-), and bicarbonate (HCO₃^-), were evaluated. Increasing the solution pH markedly accelerated O₃ decay and OH and formation, thus weakening the relative contribution of O₃ oxidation while enhancing that of OH and . Cl^- had a negligible effect on MIT and CMIT degradation. Under the dual effect of bicarbonate (HCO₃^-) as inhibitor and promoter, low concentrations (1-2 mM) of bicarbonate weakly promoted MIT and CMIT degradation, while high concentrations (10-20 mM) induced strong inhibition. Lastly, oxidation performance of O₃ and O₃/PMS processes for MIT and CMIT degradation in different water matrices was compared.

Photolysis of free chlorine and production of reactive radicals in the UV/chlorine system using polychromatic spectrum LEDs as UV sources

Recently, ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) and chlorine combined system has been employed as an emerging advanced oxidation process. However, UV-LEDs were commonly considered as monochromatic UV sources. In this study, the obvious quantum yields of chlorine photolysis under 265 nm and 280 nm LEDs irradiations were investigated with treating LEDs as polychromatic UV sources. Particularly, Φ_obs-poly of HOCl and OCl⁻ for 265 nm LED were found to be 1.50 and 0.70 mol E^-1, respectively, whereas Φ_obs-poly of HOCl and OCl⁻ for 280 nm LED were 1.28 and 0.64 mol E^-1, respectively. It was identified that Φ_obs-poly were 5.66-14.63 % lower than Φ_obs-mono. This suggests that obvious quantum yield using peak emission wavelength would overestimate the true quantum yield. The production of radical species in LED UV/chlorine systems were determined by the degradation of BA, and illustrated by a mathematical model. Different trends were observed for 265 nm and 280 nm LED UV/chlorine systems as pH increased from 5.0 to 10.0. As pH increased, the formation of OH continuously decreased in both 265 nm and 280 nm LED systems. The formation of Cl increased at neutral pH and more Cl and OH were formed due to the higher molar absorbance coefficient at 280 nm. The chlorine dose-dependent effects on radical productions at pH of 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 were also assessed. At pH of 5.0, OH was the main radical product and had linear correlation with chlorine dose. At pH of 7.5, the productions of OH and Cl showed similar profiles that increased rapidly at low chlorine dosage and then slowed down.

Understanding the influence of pre-ozonation on the formation of disinfection byproducts and cytotoxicity during post-chlorination of natural organic matter: UV absorbance and electron-donating-moiety of molecular weight fractions

Pre-ozonation can reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and related adverse effects during subsequent chlorination, but the change of each molecular weight (MW) fraction during each step of combined pre-ozonation and post-chlorination has not been well illustrated. In this study, it was investigated in terms of electron-donating-moieties (EDMs) and UVA₂₅₄ for a representative natural organic matter from Suwanee river (SRNOM). Pre-ozonation suppressed the post-chlorination of SRNOM through oxidation of almost all EDMs (>85%) and UVA₂₅₄ (>90%) in high MW fractions (HMW, >3.2 kDa) and moderate EDMs (43%) and UVA₂₅₄ (72%) in medium MW fractions (MMW, 1.0-3.2 kDa). Furthermore, pre-ozonation led to comparable abatements of EDMs and UVA₂₅₄ for HMW fractions, but lower abatement of EDMs than UVA₂₅₄ for MMW fractions. However, when t-BuOH was used as an ^•OH-quencher, pre-ozonation led to a few instances in which there were higher abatements of EDMs than UVA₂₅₄ for the MMW fraction. These findings suggested that the HMW fraction dominantly underwent ring-cleavage of phenols via O₃- or ^•OH-oxidation. Differently, the MMW fraction underwent ring-cleavage of phenols and quinones-formation via O₃-oxidation, but occasionally underwent hydroxylation and hydro-phenol formation via ^•OH-oxidation. Because of forehand elimination of reactive moieties (e.g. EDMs), pre-ozonation obviously inhibited the formation of representative DBPs (67%-84% inhibition), total organic chloride (51% inhibition) and cytotoxicity (31% inhibition), but may have promoted the formation of carbonyl-DBPs (trichloroacetone and chloral hydrate). When compared with UVA₂₅₄, EDMs would better for surrogate of DBPs formation. EDM abatement surrogated the formation of total organic chlorine (TOCl) and cytotoxicity following a two-stage phase, possibly because the speciation of DBPs and transformation products varied with the abatement of EDMs.

Combining high resolution mass spectrometry with a halogen extraction code to characterize and identify brominated disinfection byproducts formed during ozonation

Ozonation is widely used during water treatment but can generate a variety of toxic disinfection byproducts, especially in the presence of bromide. In the present study, our halogen extraction code was extended and modified to identify bromine isotopic patterns and combined with the R package MFAssignR in selectively identifying brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) from high resolution mass spectra. In total, 127 Br-DBPs formed from a Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) solution were successfully detected from tens of thousands of mass spectrometry peaks. Kendrick mass defect analysis and structural characterization identified 17 structures, 15 of which were identified as brominated carboxylic acids and firstly reported here. Computational model predictions indicated that these brominated carboxylic acids may possess high toxic potencies and raise valid concerns. The adapted halogen extraction code described in this study is a powerful tool for a wider application of analyzing Br-DBPs in complex water matrices and provides an effective technique to characterize and identify these compounds in future studies.

Reduction of cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break effects of wastewater by ferrate(VI): Roles of oxidation and coagulation

Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) can oxidize individual pollutants, but the pollutant oxidation does not necessarily result in toxicity reduction. Besides, Fe(VI) resultant Fe(III) particles has previously been used to remove heavy metals, but its influence on organic matter and toxicity of wastewater is unknown. This study investigated influence of Fe(VI) on the cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break (DSB) effects of secondary effluents from wastewater treatment plants to Chinese hamster ovary cells. Adding 5.0 mg/L Fe(VI) as Fe reduced the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of secondary effluents by 44%-71% and 40%-59%, respectively. The toxicity reduction could be explained by the alleviation of oxidative stress in cells when they were exposed to the Fe(VI)-treated organic matter. Oxidation and coagulation accounted for 60 and 40% of the reductions in cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, demonstrating that both oxidation and coagulation processes can play important roles in reducing toxicity. Molecular weight (MW)-distribution analysis showed that the oxidation process was favored for removing ultraviolet absorbance and fluorescence intensity of organic matter, while the coagulation process removed more dissolved organic carbon (DOC), especially the DOC of fractions with MW < 500 Da. Compared with ferric chloride, the Fe(VI) resultant Fe(III) showed better coagulation performance on organic matter, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity removal, because of the different particle sizes and crystalline structures. This study highlights the benefit of using Fe(VI) in advanced treatment as Fe(VI) reduced the overall toxicity of secondary effluents.

The promotions on radical formation and micropollutant degradation by the synergies between ozone and chemical reagents (synergistic ozonation): A review

The combination of ozone (O₃) and chemical reagents (such as H₂O₂) shows synergies on the radical formation and micropollutant degradation. The promoting performance was associated with various parameters including chemical reagents, micropollutants, solution pH, and the water matrix. In this review, we summarized existing knowledge on radical formation pathways, radical yields, and radical oxidation for different synergistic ozonation processes in various water matrices (such as groundwater, surface water, and wastewater). The increase of radical yields by synergistic ozonation processes was positively related to the increase of O₃-decay, with the increase being 1.1-4.4 folds than ozonation alone (0.2). Thus, synergistic ozonation can promote the degradation rate and efficiency of O₃-resistant micropollutants (second order rate constant, k_P,O3 < 200 M^-1 s^-1), but only slightly affects or even minorly inhibits the degradation of O₃-reactive micropollutants (k_P,O3 > 200 M^-1 s^-1). The water matrices^, such as the dissolved organic matters, negatively suppressed the degradation of micropollutant by quenching O₃-oxidation and radical oxidation (i.e. maximum promoting was decreased by 1.3 times), but may positively extend the promoting effects of synergistic ozonation to micropollutants that are more reactive to O₃ (i.e. k_P,O3 was extended from <200 to <2000 M^-1 s^-1). The formation of bromate would be increased through increasing radical oxidation by synergistic ozonation, but can be depressed by relative higher H₂O₂ as the reducing agent of HOBr/OBr^- intermediate. The increase in bromate formation by O₃/permononsulfate is a considerable concern due to permononsulfate cannot reduce the HOBr/OBr^- intermediate.

Nontargeted identification of chlorinated disinfection byproducts formed from natural organic matter using Orbitrap mass spectrometry and a halogen extraction code

Natural organic matter is a major source of precursors of hazardous chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs) formed during water treatment, but the majority of Cl-DBPs are still unidentified. In this study, we used a self-written halogen extraction code to identify halogen isotopic patterns in combination with the R package MFAssignR, to identify Cl-DBPs from Orbitrap mass spectra. One hundred and eighty-nine Cl-DBPs were detected during chlorination of a Suwannee River natural organic matter solution, and the structures of 20 of these compounds are reported for the first time. Kendrick mass defect analysis and structural identification confirmed that chlorinated carboxylic acids are common and likely to form during chlorination. A toxicity prediction using quantitative structure-activity relationship models indicated that most of the chlorinated carboxylic acids may be highly toxic. Our analytical strategy can identify Cl-DBPs accurately from complex mixtures and may also be applicable to the identification of other halogenated disinfection byproducts formed during water treatment.

Toxicity of Ozonated Wastewater to HepG2 Cells: Taking Full Account of Nonvolatile, Volatile, and Inorganic Byproducts

Wastewater ozonation forms various toxic byproducts, such as aldehydes, bromate, and organic bromine. However, there is currently no clear understanding of the overall toxicity changes in ozonated wastewater because pretreatment with solid phase extraction cannot retain inorganic bromate and volatile aldehydes, yet contributions of known ozonation byproducts to toxicity are unknown. Moreover, compared with bromate, organic bromine did not receive widespread attention. This study evaluated the toxicity of ozonated wastewater by taking aldehydes, bromate, and organic bromine into consideration. In the absence of bromide, formaldehyde contributed 96-97% cytotoxicity and 92-95% genotoxicity to HepG2 cells among the detected known byproducts, while acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and glyoxal had little toxicity. Both formaldehyde and dibromoacetonitrile drove toxicity among the known byproducts when bromide was present. Toxicity assays in HepG2 cells showed that when secondary effluents contained no bromide, the cytotoxicity of the nonvolatile organic fraction (NVOF) was reduced by 56-70%, and genotoxicity was completely removed after ozonation. However, the formed aldehydes (volatile organic fraction, VOF) led to increased overall toxicity. In the presence of bromide, compared with the secondary effluent, ozonation increased the cytotoxicity of the NVOF_Br from 3.4-4.0 mg phenol/L to 10.3-13.9 mg phenol/L, possibly due to the formation of organic bromine. In addition, considering the toxicity of VOF_Br (VOF in the presence of bromide, including aldehydes, tribromomethane, etc.), the overall cytotoxicity and genotoxicity became much higher than those of the secondary effluent. Although bromate had a limited impact on cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, it caused an increase in oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. Therefore, when taking full account of nonvolatile, volatile, and inorganic fractions, ozonation generally increases the toxicity of wastewater.

[Key Problems and Novel Strategy of Controlling Emerging Trace Organic Contaminants During Municipal Wastewater Reclamation]

Emerging trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) have been ubiquitously detected in municipal wastewater. TOrCs show low concentrations but are usually harmful to aquatic biota and recalcitrant to treatments. The advanced treatment of TOrCs is challenged by four main aspects. First, it is hard to qualify the chemical structure and concentrations of TOrCs, which are typically very low. Second, risk assessment results vary with the selection of target-species and toxicity-endpoints, which makes it hard to regulate priority lists and concentration limits. Third, TOrCs account for less than 0.01% of the total organics in wastewater. Thus, TOrCs cannot be selectively and efficiently removed by conventional treatments. Fourth, it is hard to optimize and manage the treatment trains of TOrCs. In this manuscript, a new strategy combing non-targeting TOrC screening and TOrC "fingerprinting" are proposed to overcome the difficulties of quantification and treatment optimization. Based on this, the standards and regulations to control the TOrCs in reclaimed water should be developed on the basis of elimination efficiency rather than concentration.

Applications of UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, and UV/persulfate/Cu2+ for the elimination of reverse osmosis concentrate generated from municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plant: Toxicity, transformation products, and disinfection byproducts

Reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) resulting from treatment of municipal wastewater reclamation involves high concentrations of recalcitrant pollutants. This study evaluated the toxicity of an ROC containing harmful biocides during representative UV synergistic oxidation processes (SOPs) (e.g., UV/hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), UV/persulfate (PS), and UV/PS/Cu²⁺). Treated ROC exhibited up to 1.3-2.3 times higher toxicity than the parent compounds such as dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC). Based on the intermediates identification, the major toxic intermediates were screened through silico assessment using the quantitative Ecological Structure-Activity Relationship (ECOSAR) tool. The transformation products (TPs) of hydroxylation and ketonization were the major formed reactions from the UV/PS/Cu²⁺. Also, some cytotoxic TPs were accumulated during the UV/H₂O₂ and UV/PS oxidations, where the carbonaceous-disinfection byproducts were more than the nitrogenous-disinfection byproducts. In the presence of chloride and bromide, chlorate and bromate could be formed during the UV-SOP; they were influenced by the different water matrix in comparison with the different ROC. Also, the formation of the total organic halogen species (TOX) was found to follow this order: UV/PS/Cu²⁺ < UV/H₂O₂ < UV/PS. In this study, the predicted cytotoxicity using the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity was more acceptable than that of the cytotoxicity index method. Further, the R-square of the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity for the UV/H₂O₂ and UV/PS was 0.82 and 0.79, respectively. The predicted cytotoxicity using the TOX correlation method in the ROC could also be used to monitor and prevent the application of different oxidations in municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plants.

[Long-term outcome of 48 unoperated adult patients with Ebstein's anomaly]

Objective: To analyze the long-term outcome of unoperated Ebstein's anomaly (EA) patients aged over 18 years, and to evaluate the related factor of outcomes. Methods: The data of 48 unoperated EA patients from March 2004 to December 2008 in the First Hospital of Tsinghua University, were analyzed. The clinical data of the patients were collected, and patients received regular echocardiography, ECG and chest X-ray examinations. Septal leaflet attachment ratio (SLAr) was calculated based on transthoracic echocardiography imagines. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to SLAr: SLAr<0.45 (n=18), 0.45≤SLAr≤0.60 (n=21) and SLAr>0.60 (n=9). Chest X-ray was used for measurement of cardiothoracic ratio (CTR). Kaplan Meier survival curve was used to calculate the long-term survival rate. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of death. Results: There were 19 males, and the mean age at diagnosis was (21.3±11.1) years. Forty-two patients (87.5%) were complicated with arrhythmia, including W-P-W syndrome (n=4), supraventricular tachycardia (n=16), right bundle branch block (n=37), and atrial fibrillation (n=2). The mean duration of follow-up was (148.8±16.8) months, the follow-up rate was 100% with no loss-to-follow up. Nine cases (18.8%) died during follow-up: 6 cases (12.5%) died of cardiac origin, including 3 cases of heart failure, 1 case of arrhythmia, and 2 cases of sudden death; 1 case died of accident; 2 cases died from unknown causes. During the follow-up period, the survival rates were 17/18, 19/21 (90.5%) and 3/9 in the SLAr<0.45, 0.45≤SLAr≤0.60 and SLAr>0.60 group, respectively. According to Kaplan-Meier survival curve, the 5-year survival rates among the three groups were 100%, 100% and 78%, respectively. The 10-year survival rates among the three groups were 94%, 95% and 44%, respectively. Decreased activity tolerance and heart failure were found in 7 patients (6 patients in SLAr>0.60 group and 1 patient in 0.45≤SLAr≤0.60 group). Two patients had cerebrovascular embolism. There were 3 cases with tachyarrhythmia lasting more than 24 hours. Cox regression analysis showed that the risk of death was higher in patients with SLAr>0.60 than in patients with SLAr<0.45 (HR=12.375, 95%CI 1.692-22.146, P=0.015); the risk of death in patients with CTR≥0.65 was 1.306 times higher than that in patients with CTR<0.65 (HR=1.306, 95%CI 0.417-12.754, P=0.038). Conclusions: EA patients often combines with arrhythmia. For unoperated EA patients, SLAr>0.60 and CTR≥0.65 are risk factors of death. EA patients with arrhythmia should be actively treated with drugs or radiofrequency ablation.

Surrogates for on-line monitoring of the attenuation of trace organic contaminants during advanced oxidation processes for water reuse

The large number of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in wastewater has resulted in severe concerns to human health. Ozonation and UV/H₂O₂ are widely used to remove TrOCs in wastewater treatment process. Owing to the trace concentrations of TrOCs in wastewater, real-time monitoring of the abatement efficiency of TrOCs through ozonation and UV/H₂O₂ is quite challenging. Instead of a direct measurement of all the TrOCs, the research community has begun to use different surrogates to monitor the attenuation of TrOCs during AOPs. Various surrogates have been developed over the past few decades. In this review, the different types of surrogates are summarized, including ultraviolet spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Strong linear correlations have been found for the removal of TrOCs using AOPs, and the abatement of UV absorption spectroscopy at 254 nm or total fluorescence (TF). Moreover, a two-phase linear correlation can better describe the ozone-resistant TrOCs compared with a single linear correlation. Two different kinds of predictive models exist that use surrogates as the input for ozonation: the regression model and kinetic model. The development of the models requires a further understanding of the impacts of water quality, seasonal variations, and storm events on the kinetic parameters. For the in situ monitoring system, the light-emitting diode (LED) is one of the most promising light sources, although the sensitivity and accuracy still need to be improved.

Combination of high resolution mass spectrometry and a halogen extraction code to identify chlorinated disinfection byproducts formed from aromatic amino acids

Chlorination can lead to the formation of hazardous chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs). We identified tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp) as precursors of toxic Cl-DBPs and developed a halogen extraction code to complement ultra performance liquid chromatography in tandem with high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) in detecting and identifying Cl-DBPs. We detected 20 and 11 Cl-DBPs formed from chlorination of Tyr and Trp, respectively, and identified the structures of 15 Cl-DBPs. Fourteen structures were previously unreported. We also proposed the tentative formation pathways of these newly identified Cl-DBPs. Their incidence in real water sources demonstrated that these Cl-DBPs are likely to form during chlorination of reclaimed water. We computationally predicted the toxicity of these Cl-DBPs, which was relatively high, indicating that these Cl-DBPs could be hazardous and were of valid concern. Combining analytical data with the halogen extraction code can identify Cl-DBPs accurately from complex compounds. This analytical method can be used to identify Cl-DBPs of water treatment procedures in further studies.

Tracing nitrogenous byproducts during ozonation in the presence of bromide and ammonia using stable isotope labeling and high resolution mass spectrometry

Ammonia has been widely used to inhibit bromate formation during ozonation. However, our recent study found that during ozonation in the presence of bromide and ammonia, toxicity increased under certain conditions that might be attributed to the formation of nitrogenous byproducts. Herein, a typical structural moiety of natural organic matter (NOM), hydroquinone, was evaluated for its potential to form nitrogenous byproducts. During ozonation of the hydroquinone solution containing bromide and ammonia, toxicity of organic byproducts increased significantly. As organic bromine was hardly detected, organic nitrogen was responsible for the increased toxicity. An effective method combining ultra-performance liquid chromatography in tandem with high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) with an isotope labeling strategy was used to trace nitrogenous byproducts. Four newly formed nitrogenous byproducts were detected, two of which were also detected in Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) solution treated under the same ozonation condition. Furthermore, the molecular structures and formation pathways of these nitrogenous byproducts were proposed. This study highlights that, despite the widespread use, adding ammonia to inhibit bromate formation during ozonation might increase the toxicity posed by nitrogenous byproducts. During ozonation in the presence of bromide and ammonia, particular attention should be paid to nitrogenous byproducts.

Comprehensive GC×GC-qMS with a mass-to-charge ratio difference extraction method to identify new brominated byproducts during ozonation and their toxicity assessment

Ozonation might increase the risk of wastewater due to byproduct formation, especially in the presence of bromide. In this study, a new analytical method was developed to identify new brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) during ozonation, using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-single quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC×GC-qMS) connected with an electron capture detector in parallel. The obtained data were analyzed using a mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) difference extraction method. Over 1304 DBPs were detected in an ozonated phenylalanine solution. Further screening of 635 DBPs was conducted using the m/z difference extraction method. Finally, the structures for 12 Br-DBPs were confirmed and for 4 Br-DBPs were tentatively proposed by comparison with the NIST library and standard compounds. Eight of the confirmed Br-DBPs are first reported and identified: 2-bromostyrene, 1-bromo-1-phenylethylene, 2-bromobenzaldehyde, 3-bromobenzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, 2-bromophenylacetonitrile, 3-bromophenylacetonitrile and 4-bromophenylacetonitrile. These DBPs and 2,4,6-tribromophenol were detected at nanogram- to microgram-per-liter concentrations during ozonation of authentic water samples like algal bloom waters, wastewater treatment plant effluents, and surface water. The toxicities of these compounds were generally higher than that of bromate. The developed analytical method is a powerful technique for analyzing complex compounds and provides a novel way of identifying byproducts in future studies.

Study on synergistic effect of ozone and monochloramine on the degradation of chloromethylisothiazolinone biocide

In this study, it was found that monochloramine induced the formation of reactive species during ozonation of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT). CMIT was found recalcitrant to chloramine. However, chloramine promoted the degradation of CMIT by ozonation significantly. Hydroxyl radicals contributed most to CMIT degradation (87%) during ozone/chloramine synergistic oxidation process (SOP). The hydroxyl radical exposure during ozone/chloramine SOP was around 7.9 times higher than that of ozonation process. The hydroxyl radical yield of ozone/chloramine SOP was estimated to be 32%. The reaction mechanisms between ozone and chloramine were postulated to include the oxygen transfer reaction to form singlet oxygen, and the formation of hydroxyl radical by the insertion pathway or electron transfer pathway. Chloramine dosage and pH are essential influencing factors. The degradation of CMIT increased from 41% to 74% with increasing chloramine dosage (0-20 μM), and then decreased to 65% when chloramine dosage continually increased to 40 μM. Ozone/chloramine SOP showed better performance at acidic or neutral conditions than basic condition. Based on the intermediates identified, the degradation pathway of CMIT during ozone/chloramine SOP included the oxidation of sulfur atom and the substitution of chlorine group by hydroxyl group. The oxidation of sulfur atom induced lower toxicities of transformation products. The toxicities of hydroxylation products were lower to fish and algae, but higher to daphnia. Based on the GC-ECD results, only trichloromethane (1.94 μg/L) was detected after ozone/chloramine SOP, accounting for 0.17% (μM/μM) of the CMIT removal.

Non-volatile disinfection byproducts are far more toxic to mammalian cells than volatile byproducts

Water is often chlorinated to protect public health, but chlorination causes harmful disinfection byproducts to form. Currently available in vitro assays generally determine non-volatile disinfection byproduct (NVDBP) toxicities because of the limitation of pretreatments used, but chemical analyses and regulations are focused on volatile disinfection byproducts (VDBPs) such as trihalomethanes. The gap of VDBP toxicities have been of concern for some time. In this study, we extracted VDBPs from two chlorinated effluent organic matters and one chlorinated natural organic matter, using a helium aeration-liquid nitrogen condensation system, and systematically assessed the VDBP and NVDBP toxicities to mammalian cells. VDBPs accounted for 10%-20% of the total organic halogen concentrations in three chlorinated water samples. VDBPs were much less cytotoxic, caused fewer DNA double-strand breaks, induced less reactive oxygen species and DNA/RNA oxidative damage marker of 8-hydroxyl(deoxy)guanosine in cells than did NVDBPs. Moreover, by collecting the VDBPs, toxicity measurement of the full range of DBPs was achieved. Cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species and 8-hydroxyl(deoxy)guanosine levels were significantly higher for cells exposed to the mixture of VDBPs and NVDBPs than only NVDBPs, but not by large percentages (20%-30% for cytotoxicity), suggesting NVDBPs mainly contributed to the toxicity of chlorinated water. Our study suggested that future research should focus more on NVDBP toxicity and identifying toxicity drivers from NVDBPs.

[Adsorption of Sb(Ⅴ) in Water by Natural Pyrite: Performance and Mechanism]

The adsorption performance of three iron ores (pyrite, hematite, and magnetite) on Sb(Ⅴ) was compared and pyrite was shown to exhibit the highest adsorption performance. The effects of particle size, concentration, and pH on the adsorption performance were investigated with pyrite as the absorbent. The rejection of Sb(Ⅴ) was the highest (>80%) when pyrite (particle size <0.074 mm) was used as the absorbent with a concentration of 1 g ·L^-1 and pH=7. The ion competition experiment indicated that PO₄^3- can inhibit the adsorption of Sb(Ⅴ), while SO₄^2- and CO₃^2- have no significant effects on the adsorption of Sb(Ⅴ) because PO₄^3- can compete with Sb(Ⅴ) for active adsorption sites on the surface of pyrite. The results also showed that the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model can better simulate the adsorption process, which shows a single-layer adsorption behavior and chemisorption plays a main role in the rejection of Sb(Ⅴ). FTIR analysis suggested that the removal of Sb(Ⅴ) by pyrite was a coordinated ion exchange reaction. EDS and XPS results further confirmed that Sb(Ⅴ) was adsorbed on the surface of pyrite and was not reduced to Sb(Ⅲ), which is more toxic.

Degradation of non-oxidizing biocide benzalkonium chloride and bulk dissolved organic matter in reverse osmosis concentrate by UV/chlorine oxidation

Non-oxidizing biocide that is used to inhibit the microorganism growth on RO membrane, are observed to be high concentration and toxic in RO concentrate. The synergistic oxidation process (SOP) of UV/chlorine was investigated to simultaneously reduced the content (60.2 %) and toxicity (57.0 %) of a representative biocide dodecylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride (DDBAC) in real RO concentrate, with a UV fluence 1080 mJ/cm² and chlorine dose 20 mg/L. Besides eliminating the DDBAC, UV/chlorine reduced the UVA₂₅₄ and fluorescence of the dissolved organic matters (DOM). The oxidation mechanism was verified to be the radical electrophilic addition rather than the chlorine-electrophilic substitution through the decay of electron-donation moiety and UVA₂₅₄. As results, high molecular weight fractions of DOM (>2k Da, 79.2 %) was cleaved into low molecular weight fractions (<0.4k Da, 18.4 %) and organic halide was formed. Parallel-factor analysis of the fluorescence components suggested that decomposition of the protein-like fluorophore is most likely to surrogate the biocide removal and organic halide formation compared to other fluorophore components and UVA₂₅₄. Accordingly, a portable fluorescence probe with 400 nm excitation and 410-600 nm emission wavelengths was developed as an online surrogate for the DDBAC removal and organic halide formation.
