Abstract
This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst) pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:102301. Abstract
ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector. Abstract
Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140 fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Synthesis of amorphous-MnO 2/Clinoptilolite and its utilization for NH 4+-N oxidation in an anoxic environment. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2024; 241:117574. Abstract
Mediating the anoxic ammonia oxidation with manganese oxide (MnOx) can reduce the requirements of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in constructed wetlands (CWs) and improve the removal of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N). Recent studies that employed natural manganese ore and/or mine waste as substrates in CWs may develop potentially negative environmental effects due to leachates. However, removing NH4+-N by anoxic ammonia oxidation is influenced by the crystal form of MnOx. In this study, a novel clinoptilolite-based amorphous-MnO2 (amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite) was synthesized by the sol-gel method as an alternative substrate to improve the efficiency of anoxic ammonia oxidation and reduce the impact of Mn ion leaching. According to the anoxic ammonia oxidation experiment of clinoptilolite, amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite, and manganese ore on NH4+-N, the amounts of NH4+-N removed were 24.55 mg/L/d, 44.55 mg/L/d, and 11.04 mg/L/d, respectively, and the initial NH4+-N concentration was 49.53 mg/L. These results indicated that the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite had both the adsorption and the anoxic ammonia oxidation performance. The recycling experiment demonstrated that the effect of anoxic ammonia oxygen mediated by amorphous-MnO2 would not diminish with the gradual saturation of clinoptilolite for NH4+-N. Furthermore, the anoxic ammonia oxidation consumed NH4+-N in the clinoptilolite, which restored the adsorption capacity of the clinoptilolite and simultaneously decreased the leakage of manganese ions in the process, making it environmentally friendly. Therefore, the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite provided an excellent substrate material for the constructed wetland under an anoxic environment, which greatly improved the nitrogen removal capacity compared to existing substrate materials.

Abstract
This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst) fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06 fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Evaluation of impact of land use and landscape metrics on surface water quality in the northeastern part along Lake Tanganyika, Africa. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2024; 31:8134-8149. Abstract
As the second deepest lake in Africa, Lake Tanganyika plays an important role in supplying fish protein for the catchment's residents and is irreplaceable in global biodiversity. However, the lake's water environment is threatened by socioeconomic development and rapid population growth along the lake. This study analyzed the spatial scale effects and seasonal dependence of land use types and landscape metrics on water quality in 16 sub-basins along northeastern Lake Tanganyika at different levels of urbanization. The results revealed that land use types had a higher influence on water quality in urban areas than that in rural areas; the explanatory variance in the urban area was 0.78-0.96, while it was 0.21-0.70 in the rural area. The explanatory ability of land use types on water quality was better at the buffer scale than at the sub-watershed scale, and the 500 m buffer scale had the highest explanatory ability in the urban area and rural area both in the rainy season and dry season, and artificial surface and arable land were the main contributing factors. And this phenomenon was more obvious in dry season than in rainy season. We identified that CONTAG was the key landscape metric in urban area and was positively correlated with nutrient variables, indicating that water quality degraded in less fragmented landscapes. The sub-watershed scale had the highest explained ability, while in rural area, the 1500 m buffer scale had the highest explained ability and IJI had the highest explanatory variance, which had a negative effect on water quality. Research on the relationship between land use and water quality would help assess the water quality in the unmonitored watershed as monitoring is expensive and time-consuming in low-income area. This knowledge would provide guideline to watershed managers and policymakers to prioritize the future land use development within Lake Tanganyika basin.

Abstract
A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Abstract
A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139 fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Abstract
The phyllosphere pH helps shape the plant microbiome and strongly influences aboveground interactions in plant canopies. Yet little is known about the distribution of pH at a microscale within the macrophyte phyllosphere and the factors promoting them because achieving high-resolution quantitative imaging of phyllosphere pH is a great challenge. Here, new ratiometric pH nano-optodes were prepared by firstly encapsulating the self-synthesized lipophilic dyes (8-acetoxypyrene-N1, N3, N6-trioctadecyl-1, 3, 6-tri-trisulfonamide) to poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-styrene) nanoparticles, and then immobilizing the resulting nanoparticles in polyurethane hydrogel on transparent foils. The nano-optodes presented reversible and fast response (t95 < 80 s) to the pH range from 7.0 to 11.0, with merits of good spatial resolution, photobleaching/leaching resistance and negligible cross-sensitives toward temperature, O2 and ionic strength (< 100 mM). The nano-optodes together with a self-designed phyllosphere chamber were further applied to directly measure the pH distributions at a microscale around single leaves of V. spiralis grown in natural sediment. The pronounced pH microheterogeneity and leaf basification within the V. spiralis phyllosphere were quantitatively visualized. We also provided direct empirical evidence that the dynamic of the phyllosphere pH at high resolution was significantly controlled by the shifting light intensity and temperature. Implementation of the nano-optodes holds great potential for various laboratory applications, which will provide an in-depth insight into phyllosphere activities on the microscale.

Abstract
A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8 pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Abstract
A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Abstract
This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for a_{τ} is -0.057

[Impact of different diagnostic criteria for assessing mild micro-hepatic encephalopathy in liver cirrhosis: an analysis based on a prospective, multicenter, real-world study]. ZHONGHUA GAN ZANG BING ZA ZHI = ZHONGHUA GANZANGBING ZAZHI = CHINESE JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY 2023; 31:961-968. Abstract
Objective: To compare the differences in the prevalence of mild micro-hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) among patients with cirrhosis by using the psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES) and the Stroop smartphone application (Encephal App) test. Methods: This prospective, multi-center, real-world study was initiated by the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Infectious Diseases and the Portal Hypertension Alliance and registered with International ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05140837). 354 cases of cirrhosis were enrolled in 19 hospitals across the country. PHES (including digital connection tests A and B, digital symbol tests, trajectory drawing tests, and serial management tests) and the Stroop test were conducted in all of them. PHES was differentiated using standard diagnostic criteria established by the two studies in China and South Korea. The Stroop test was evaluated based on the criteria of the research and development team. The impact of different diagnostic standards or methods on the incidence of MHE in patients with cirrhosis was analyzed. Data between groups were differentiated using the t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and χ (2) test. A kappa test was used to compare the consistency between groups. Results: After PHES, the prevalence of MHE among 354 cases of cirrhosis was 78.53% and 15.25%, respectively, based on Chinese research standards and Korean research normal value standards. However, the prevalence of MHE was 56.78% based on the Stroop test, and the differences in pairwise comparisons among the three groups were statistically significant (kappa = -0.064, P < 0.001). Stratified analysis revealed that the MHE prevalence in three groups of patients with Child-Pugh classes A, B, and C was 74.14%, 83.33%, and 88.24%, respectively, according to the normal value standards of Chinese researchers, while the MHE prevalence rates in three groups of patients with Child-Pugh classes A, B, and C were 8.29%, 23.53%, and 38.24%, respectively, according to the normal value standards of Korean researchers. Furthermore, the prevalence rates of MHE in the three groups of patients with Child-Pugh grades A, B, and C were 52.68%, 58.82%, and 73.53%, respectively, according to the Stroop test standard. However, among the results of each diagnostic standard, the prevalence of MHE showed an increasing trend with an increasing Child-Pugh grade. Further comparison demonstrated that the scores obtained by the number connection test A and the number symbol test were consistent according to the normal value standards of the two studies in China and South Korea (Z = -0.982, -1.702; P = 0.326, 0.089), while the other three sub-tests had significant differences (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence rate of MHE in the cirrhotic population is high, but the prevalence of MHE obtained by using different diagnostic criteria or methods varies greatly. Therefore, in line with the current changes in demographics and disease spectrum, it is necessary to enroll a larger sample size of a healthy population as a control. Moreover, the establishment of more reliable diagnostic scoring criteria will serve as a basis for obtaining accurate MHE incidence and formulating diagnosis and treatment strategies in cirrhotic populations.

Burial or mineralization: Origins and fates of organic matter in the water-suspended particulate matter-sediment of macrophyte- and algae-dominated areas in Lake Taihu. WATER RESEARCH 2023; 243:120414. Abstract
Increased algal blooms and loss of aquatic vegetation are critical environmental issues associated with shallow lakes worldwide. The increase in organic matter (OM) in both macrophyte-dominated areas (MDAs) and algae-dominated areas (ADAs) has exacerbated these problems. Most OM in water is concentrated as suspended particulate matter (SPM), which eventually migrates to the sediment. However, the detailed origins and fates of OM in water-SPM-sediment systems with coexisting MDAs and ADAs remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we conducted monthly field investigations in Lake Taihu, focusing on OM-migration patterns in an MDA and an ADA. The C/N mass ratios, δ13C contents, and OM compositions of the water, SPM, and sediment were analyzed. Our findings revealed that autochthonous sources of OM prevailed in water, whereas terrestrial sources prevailed in SPM and sediment. Rapid decomposition processes of microbial- and algae-derived dissolved OM were discovered along the water-SPM-sediment pathways in both areas. A trend towards a shift from macrophytes to algae in the MDA was also discovered. Overall, the entire lake underwent a burial process of OM in both types of areas, with mineralization mostly occurring during the algal-bloom seasons and more strongly in the ADA. Furthermore, we deduced that a decrease in the OM-burial rate, but an increase in the mineralization rate, might occur after a complete shift from a macrophyte- to an algae-dominated status. Such a shift might change the carbon-cycle process in eutrophic shallow lakes and should be given more attention in future research.

Abstract
Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36 nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6 pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5 GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4 GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Abstract
A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Scenario analysis of phosphorus flow in food production and consumption system in the Mwanza region, Tanzania. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 879:162991. Abstract
Since the mineral, phosphorus (P), has dual properties of being limited resources for use, and being a pollutant for studying sustainable management of anthropogenic P flows in wetlands and soils, currently P receives the highest interests among researchers around the world. This study has successfully mapped P flows for a reference year (2017) and a future year (2030) using different scenarios of food production and consumption system (hereafter 'system') in the Mwanza region (Tanzania). The results showed that the total P input and output for 2017 alone were 9770 t and 7989 t, respectively. However, as high as 1781 tP accumulated in the system and the potentially recyclable P found, is yet to be recovered due to economic reasons and the lack of market. The main anthropogenic P input to the system occurred via imported feed, fertilizer, and crop food, accounting for about 99.72 % of the total input flow. The output was comprised of animal products exported with 3428 tP, and various P-contained wastes which were lost to water bodies with 4561tP. Analysis of the 2030 scenario showed that setting P management objectives from different perspectives such as the total P budget balance, potential recyclable P, and P emission, can help develop differentially preferred management strategies and measures in the Mwanza region. The combination of diet change, precision feeding, and integrated waste management practices presents the best prospects for decreasing P budget and losses, and the amount of P that can be potentially recovered from the system. We propose a package of integrated P management measures for the Mwanza region. Given the similarity of regional socio-economic development background around the Lake Victoria basin, the model can be used to guide the study of anthropogenic P flow analysis in other areas along the shore of Lake Victoria (Africa).

Mn(VII) enhanced by CaSO 3 to remove trace organic pollutants in high salt organic wastewater: Further enhancement of salinity. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 334:138964. Abstract
The high concentration of salt in organic wastewater has a strong inhibitory effect on the removal of pollutants. A method for the efficient removal of trace pollutants in high-salinity organic wastewater was developed. This study investigated the effect of the combination of permanganate [Mn(VII)] and calcium sulfite [S(IV)] on pollutant removal in hypersaline wastewater. The Mn(VII)-CaSO3 system removed more pollutants from high-salinity organic wastewater than from normal-salinity wastewater. Chloride (increasing from 1 M to 5 M) and low concentration of sulfate (increasing from 0.05 M to 0.5 M) significantly enhanced the system's resistance to pollutants under neutral conditions. Despite the fact that Cl- can combine with the free radicals in the system and reduce their efficiency in removing pollutants, the presence of chloride ions greatly enhances the electron transfer rate in the system, promoting the conversion of Mn(VII) to Mn(III) and significantly increasing the reaction rate of Mn(III) as the primary active species. Therefore, chloride salts can greatly enhance the removal of organic pollutants by Mn(VII)-CaSO3. Although sulfate does not react with free radicals, a high concentration of sulfate (1 M) will affect the formation of Mn(III), which greatly weakens the removal effect of the entire system on pollutants. The system can still have a good pollutant removal effect with mixed salt. Altogether, this study demonstrates that the Mn(VII)-CaSO3 system offers new possibilities for the treatment of organic pollutants in hypersaline wastewater.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate and summarize the clinicopathological features, immunophenotype, differential diagnosis and prognosis analysis of mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC). METHODS The data of thirteen cases of MTSCC were retrospectively analyzed, the clinical and pathological characteristics and immunohistochemical expression were summarized, and fluorescence in situ hybridization was detected. RESULTS Among the thirteen patients, four were males and nine females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1 ∶2.25. The average age was 57.1 years, ranging from 39 to 78 years. The maximum diameter of the tumor was 2-12 cm. All cases had no symptoms, and were accidentally discovered, 3 cases underwent partial renal resection, 10 cases underwent radical renal resection, 9 cases were located in the left kidney, and 4 cases were located in the right kidney. Most of the cases showed the classical morphological changes, with 11 cases of nuclear grading [World Health Organization (WHO)/International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grading system] being G2 and 2 cases being G3. There were 6 cases of stage PT1a, 3 cases of PT1b, 2 cases of PT2a, and 1 case of PT2b and 1 case of PT3a. The positive rates of immunohistochemical staining were: vimentin, AE1/AE3, α-methylacyl-CoA racemase (αMACR) and cytokeratin (CK) 8/18, 100% (13/13); CK7, 92.3% (12/13); epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), 92.3% (12/13); CK20, 46.2% (6/13); CD10, 30.8% (4/13); synaptophysin (Syn), 7.7% (1/13); chromogranin A (CgA), CD57, WT1 and Ki-67, 0 (0/13), and fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that no trisomy of chromosomes 7 and 17 were observed in any of the cases. The follow-up period was 6 months to 7 years and 6 months, 2 cases died after lung metastasis (one with ISUP/WHO grade G3, one with necrosis), and the remaining 11 cases had no recurrence and metastasis. CONCLUSION MTSCC is a unique type of low-grade malignancy kidney tumor, occurs predominantly in females, widely distributed in age, the current treatment method is surgical resection, and cases with necrosis and high-grade morphology are prone to recurrence and metastasis, although most cases have a good prognosis, but they still need close follow-up after surgery.

Evaluation of the distribution and mobility of labile phosphorus in sediment profiles of Lake Nansi, the largest eutrophic freshwater lake in northern China. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 315:137756. [PMID: 36610514 DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.137756] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/24/2022] [Revised: 12/24/2022] [Accepted: 12/27/2022] [Indexed: 06/17/2023]
Abstract
Understanding various biogeochemical processes, especially in eutrophic sediments, necessitates fine-scale phosphorus (P) measurements in pore waters. To the best of our knowledge, the fine-scale distributions of P across the sediment profiles of Lake Nansi have rarely been investigated. Herein we evaluated the dynamic distributions of labile P and Fe across the sediment-water interface (SWI) of Lake Nansi at two-dimensional (2D) and sub-millimeter resolution, using well-established colorimetric diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) methodology. The concentrations of labile P in all investigated sediment profiles exhibited strong spatial variations, ranging from 0 to 1.50 mg/L with a considerable number of hotspots. Lake Nanyang (0.55 ± 0.21 mg/L) had the highest mean concentration of labile P, followed by Lake Dushan (0.38 ± 0.19 mg/L), Lake Weishan (0.28 ± 0.21 mg/L), and Lake Zhaoyang (0.18 ± 0.09 mg/L). The highest concentrations of labile P were always detected in Lake Dushan, which had been subjected to excessive exogenous P pollution. The co-distributions of labile P and Fe in the majority of the sediment of Lake Nansi confirmed highly positive correlations (P < 0.01), suggesting that the mobility of labile P throughout the SWI was likely governed by iron redox processes. The apparent diffusion fluxes of P across the SWI ranged from -7.7 to 33.6 μg/m2·d, with a mean value of 5.26 ± 7.80 μg/m2·d. Positive apparent fluxes for labile P were recorded in most sediment cores, demonstrating the strong upward mobility of P from the sediment to the overlying water. Our results provided accurate and extensive information regarding the micro-distribution and dynamic exchange of labile P across the SWI. This allows for a better understanding of eutrophication processes and the implementation of P management strategies in Lake Nansi.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution in sediments is a common environmental issue in small- and medium-sized reservoirs not only in China but also worldwide; however, few interpretations of the pollution pattern exist. Based on the analyses of accumulation characteristics, ecological risks, and source apportionments of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in sediments, we derived a paradigm to describe the pollution pattern of heavy metals in sediments of a typical small- and medium-sized Tongjiqiao Reservoir. The results showed high levels of Cd, Hg, and As pollutants in the surface and upper sediment layers of the pre-dam area. Additionally, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb pollutants peaked in the middle layers of the inflow area, indicating a high ecological risk in these areas. The positive matrix factorization results implied that industrial, agricultural, and transportation activities were the main sources of heavy metals. The heavy metal pollution pattern exhibited three distinct stages: low contamination, rapid pollution, and pollution control. This pattern explains the heavy metal pollution process in the sediments and will provide scientific guidance for realizing the green and sustainable operation and development of the reservoir.

New insights into the growth response of the macrophyte Vallisneria natans exposed to phosphite. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 851:158189. Abstract
Renewed interest in phosphite, an analog of phosphate, has increased due to its widespread distribution and increasing abundance in many waterbodies. However, up until recently very little is known about their ecological effects on aquatic organisms. Herein we studied the effects of phosphite via root and foliar exposure on the growth responses of the dominant pioneer macrophyte V. natans. Overall, both exposures of phosphite to V. natans resulted in significant reductions in the leaf length, root length, relative growth rate (RGR) and photosynthetic pigments, suggesting phosphite had an inhibitory effect on the plant growth. Our results further confirmed phosphite could induce the oxidative stresses in the V. natans cells, as indicated by the significantly increased intracellular enzyme activities i.e. superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Microscopic evidence also showed phosphite penetrated the cell membrane and destroyed membrane integrity under high phosphite stress. Besides, V. natans leaves exhibited intuitive deterioration symptoms, which seemed to be more sensitive to phosphite toxicity than roots. It is concluded that the increased abundance of phosphite in waterbodies cannot be utilized as a bioavailable P source but impose adverse physiological and metabolic limitations to plant growth, which should be receive more attention in the ecological risk assessment. Our result is necessary to build a comprehensive understanding of phosphite biogeochemical behaviors in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Objective: To explore metabolic biomarkers associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes. Methods: Cluster random sampling method was used to select 10 867 local residents aged ≥ 20 years in Liangxi district of Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province in 2007. The baseline survey and physical examination were conducted to collect participants' information, including demographic characteristics, behavior and lifestyles, disease history, family history of diabetes, height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure, etc. Blood samples were collected and biochemical indexes (high density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, etc.) were tested. By June 30, 2020, 220 newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes during the follow-up were selected as cases, and 220 healthy individuals were matched as controls with age (±5 years) and the same sex. High performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometer was used to detect and identify metabolites in serum samples of two groups at baseline. Lasso regression and multivariate conditional logistic regression were used to explore the metabolites associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes. Results: The age of participants at baseline was (53±7) years, and 41.82% were male. 25 out of 1 579 metabolites were selected to be potentially associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes in the lasso regression model. The multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis showed that only 7-Methylxanthine had an independent effect on type 2 diabetes (P=0.019). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) (95%CI) of the prediction model of type 2 diabetes based on traditional risk factors was 0.80 (0.76-0.85). After the 7-methylxanthine in the model, the AUC (95%CI) increased to 0.92 (0.89-0.95) (P<0.001). From the second year, 7-methylxanthine could improve the prediction performance (P=0.007). Conclusion: The level of 7-methylxanthine is related to the onset of type 2 diabetes, and can be used as a biomarker to predict its incidence risk.

Denitrification performance and characteristics of untreated corncob for enhanced nitrogen removal of municipal sewage with low C/N ratio. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2022; 213:113673. Abstract
Unpretreated corncob was applied in denitrification bio-filter (DNBF) and anoxic tank of AAO system, respectively, to treat sewage with low C/N ratio, and both two approaches achieved good denitrification performance. Although shorter HRT could effectively decrease effluent chroma and COD of corncob-DNBF, nitrogen removal efficiency declined unexpectedly. Higher internal reflux ratio was beneficial for corncob-AAO without damage to anoxic environment for denitrification, while there was no risk of effluent chroma and excessive COD. Different supplement modes could realize same denitrification effect with distinct advantages, which were higher specific denitrification rate and biomass amount, respectively. The latter mode, applying corncob at secondary treatment, was preferable for its operational stability and convenience. Stoichiometry analysis indicated the unit COD demand of AAO decreased from 5.70 to 5.04 g COD/g N after adding corncob, and the oxygen demand (or energy consumption of aeration) decreased as well. The dominant substrates decomposer in corncob-AAO altered to Kouleothrix (affiliated to phylum Chloroflexi), and the main denitrifying bacteria were unclassified_f__Methylophilaceae and Azospira. Accordingly, functional enzymes for degrading glucan, xylan and lignin and processing denitrification showed satisfying abundance in the integrated system, especially in the newly formed biofilm.

Effects of iron-based substrate on coupling of nitrification, aerobic denitrification and Fe(II) autotrophic denitrification in tidal flow constructed wetlands. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2022; 361:127657. Abstract
The aerobic properties of nitrification and the anaerobic properties of denitrification in constructed wetlands are difficult to reconcile. In this study, two constructed wetlands were constructed with pyrite and steel slag in combination with zeolite, and their respective nitrification and denitrification capacities were evaluated under different tidal strategies. The steel slag wetland achieved 70.89 % and 46.04 % removal rates of NH4+-N and total nitrogen (TN), and the carbon consumption of denitrification was 1.51 mg BOD/mgN, which was better than pyrite wetland. Microbial analysis showed that Fe(II) autotrophic denitrification and aerobic denitrification occurred in both wetlands, and they were coupled with nitrification to achieve simultaneous removal of NH4+-N and TN. Microbial co-occurrence network and k-core decomposition analysis indicated that the core genus of steel slag wetlands was nitrifying bacteria. This study provides new insights into the application of tidal flow wetlands to treat rural sewage.

Abstract
The distribution of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn and their fraction characteristics (except Hg) were investigated in surface sediments of the Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria. The ecological risks, bioavailability, and mobility of the metals were also evaluated by using enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (Cf), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (RI), risk assessment code (RAC), individual contamination factor (ICF), and global contamination factor (GCF). Results showed that there were moderate accumulations of heavy metals in sediments from the southern part of the gulf. The mean Cf of heavy metals ranged from 1.19 (Ni) to 2.85 (Hg) suggesting moderate contamination of heavy metals in the sediments while Igeo results showed that the sediments are mainly contaminated by As, Cr, and Hg. The average potential ecological risk of heavy metals in sediments of the Mwanza Gulf is at moderate level (RI 205.49). Hg and Cd posed considerable or moderated risks with mean ecological risk of 114.18 and 44.16, which accounted for 51.08% and 21.54% of the total RI, respectively. High bioavailability and mobility of heavy metals were found in sediments near Mwanza city, particularly Zn and Cd, of which the bioavailability risks were at medium to high levels. Given the biological and environmental importance of the Mwanza Gulf and Lake Victoria, emission paths and bioaccumulation of heavy metals through food webs should be studied carefully to ensure the safety of food and the health and well-being of humans.

Abstract
PURPOSE In order to explore whether partial breast irradiation can replace hypofractionated whole breast irradiation and whether the former two are superior to conventional fractionated whole breast irradiation, we conducted a network meta-analysis based on the data from the latest randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of these radiotherapy modalities. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from eligible studies were analyzed to determine the published events for ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence, distant metastasis, total deaths, and non-breast cancer-related deaths. In the case of low or high heterogeneity, the fixed-effect or random-effect model was used for statistical analysis respectively. NMA was performed by using the node-splitting model for two-category data among three radiotherapies based on a Bayesian method. RESULTS A total of 23,418 patients were included in 16 studies. For ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence, both pairwise (OR=1.9; CI95%: 1.2 -2.8; p<0.05) and indirect (OR=1.7; CI95%: 1.2 -2.4; p<0.05) comparison of three radiotherapies by network meta-analysis showed that conventional fractionated whole breast irradiation was significantly better than partial breast irradiation. Indirect comparison of three radiotherapies by network meta-analysis showed that hypofractionated whole breast irradiation was significantly better than partial breast irradiation (OR=1.6; CI95%: 1.0 -2.5; p<0.05). Network and paired meta-analyses found no significant differences in other endpoints among the three radiotherapies. CONCLUSION Overall, this network meta-analysis showed that partial breast irradiation was related to the increase of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence compared with hypofractionated or conventional fractionated whole breast irradiation in patients with early-stage breast cancer.

Abstract
A recent study found that the nitrogen cycle in marine sediments can occur under oxygen-limited conditions, and this is associated with a reduction of Mn (IV). However, the effect of MnO2 mediated anoxic ammonia oxidation in different sediments field test results are controversial. In this study, based on the fact that the crystal form and morphology of MnO2 in marine sediments are affected by geochemistry, α-, β-, γ-MnO2 and amorphous MnO2 were prepared to explore the effect of the different MnO2 crystals on nitrogen removal under oxygen-limited conditions. The experimental results showed that the anoxic ammonia oxidation process was mediated by microorganisms, and the reaction was affected by pH and temperature. The optimal pH was 7 in the range of pH 4-9 and the optimal temperature was 25 °C in the range of 10 °C-40 °C. When the initial concentration of NH4+-N was 50 mg/L, the removal amounts of NH4+-N under an anoxic condition by α-, β-, γ-MnO2 and amorphous MnO2 were 18.97 mg/L/d, 6.12 mg/L/d, 10.68 mg/L/d and 24.89 mg/L/d, respectively. During the anoxic oxidation between MnO2 and NH4+-N, the adsorption process occurred. In addition, the oxidation process produced both NOx--N (nitrification reaction) and gaseous nitrogen (ammonia oxidation reaction). The kinetic study showed that the NH4+-N removal process conformed to the pseudo-second-order rate model, and the removal rates were ranked as amorphous MnO2 > α- > γ- > β-MnO2. Together, these results showed that the amorphous MnO2 crystal structure was conducive to improve anoxic ammonia oxidation and nitrogen removal under oxygen-limited conditions.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery. Nature 2022; 607:52-59. Abstract
The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

Assessment of urban river water pollution with urbanization in East Africa. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2022; 29:40812-40825. Abstract
Anthropogenic pollution plays an important part in deteriorating the water quality of rivers all over the world, especially in urban areas of Africa where water quality monitoring is still seriously constrained by the limited test facility and capability. In this study, for evaluating the impact of urbanization on the river water quality, we investigated four typical urban rivers of Tanzania through the upper-urban-down gradient assessment approach and analyzed by water quality index (WQI) and statistical methods. The physicochemical indices monitored in these rivers revealed that the contents of those indicators of TN, TP, PO43-, NH4+, CODMn, and NO3- were accumulated significantly in the lower reaches of the cities, which indicated the life-type pollution characteristics in such urban rivers of Africa. The following main conclusions are achieved from this study. The water quality of 30% of the investigated river sections is in the medium to good status based on the subjective WQI with sensory factors included. Moreover, the sections with obvious water quality decline are mainly limited to the river segments within the urban central area, and severe pollution of water bodies is closely related to large cities, indicating an increasing pollution tendency with the quickly growing population. Therefore, to help formulate water pollution control policies in response to the rapid urban expansion in African countries, it is necessary to adopt an economical and feasible method to carry out early monitoring of surface water quality timely.

Abstract
Tanzania is the only country bordering all three transboundary East African Great Lakes, i.e., Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi). This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of basic physicochemical parameters of nearshore surface waters in Mwanza Gulf (Lake Victoria), Kigoma Bay (Lake Tanganyika), and Wissmann Bay (Lake Nyasa). Water quality was evaluated using the water quality index (WQI) method. Results showed that N and P nutrient pollution was relatively severe in central and southern parts of Mwanza Gulf owing to external agricultural emissions and internal release associated with physically disturbed sediment resuspension. External inputs from inflowing surface runoffs from the city of Mwanza typically enhanced N loading in northern parts of the gulf during the rainy season. Poor water quality was found in central and southern parts of Mwanza Gulf, especially in the rainy season. Algal blooms and NH4+-N (total P and total N) were the main factors driving water quality degradation in the rainy (dry) season. Kigoma Bay and Wissmann Bay both had good water quality, except in river mouth areas in Lake Nyasa during the rainy season. The degradation in water quality was caused primarily by increased land-based nutrient and turbidity inputs. To respond to challenges associated with climate change and local socioeconomic development, long-term monitoring of the lacustrine environment and systematic limnological studies will be required, not only in the three bays but also more widely throughout the three lakes and their basins.

Removal of micro organic pollutants in high salinity wastewater by comproportionation system of Fe(VI)/Fe(III): Enhancement of chloride and bicarbonate. WATER RESEARCH 2022; 214:118182. Abstract
The high concentration of salt in industrial wastewater has a strong inhibitory effect on the removal of pollutants by free radicals. A method has been developed to effectively remove micro organic pollutants in industrial high-salinity wastewater. This study investigated the combination of ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) and Fe(III) on the reduction of the pollutants in synthetic high-salinity wastewater, while focusing on the effects of major inorganic substances. Whether in synthetic wastewater with or without salinity, Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process exhibited higher pollutants removal rates than Fe(VI). Both chloride (increasing from (2.2 ± 0.1) × 10-2 min-1 to (1.1 ± 0.03) × 10-1 min-1) and bicarbonate (increasing from (2.2 ± 0.1) × 10-2 min-1 to (1.1 ± 0.02) × 10-1 min-1) significantly enhanced the removal of pollutants by the Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process. Chloride changed the ionic strength of Fe(VI), but Fe(III) strengthened the formation of Fe(V)/Fe(IV) from FeO42-, which offset the effect of the decrease of HFeO4-. Bicarbonate complexed Fe(V)/Fe(IV), these complexes enhanced the oxidizing ability of Fe(V)/Fe(IV). Based on the Program Kintecus, Fe(IV) was proposed as the main iron species in Fe(VI)-Fe(III) system, and its concentration was 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than Fe(V) at pH 9.0. The enhancement of Fe(VI)-Fe(III) system was observed in the oxidation of pollutant in real wastewater. Overall, the Fe(VI)-Fe(III) process is a new option for treating organic pollutants in industrial high salinity wastewater.

Abstract
This study researched denitrification performance and mechanism of denitrification biofilm reactor with different HRTs and carbon sources dosages. Experimental group (EG) had better nitrate and COD removal performance than control group (CG) with different HRTs or carbon doses, and the maximum nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) of them reached 7.91 ± 1.60% and 17.50 ± 1.92%, respectively. Because organic carbon sources were added to the carrier's interior in EG, forming high local concentrations in biofilms and counter-diffusional with nitrate. By contrast, carbon sources and nitrate were provided from the aqueous phase in CG. Thus, the EG system has more active regions of the biofilm than CG. In addition, EG had higher proportions of microorganisms and enzymes related to denitrification and carbon metabolism. The most dominant phylum, genus, and species were Proteobacteria, Thaurea, and Thauera_sp._27, respectively. The transcript of acetyl-CoA synthetase (K01895) and denitrification (M00529) was mainly originated from unclassified_g__Pseudomonas and unclassified_g__Thauera, respectively.

Glycine- and Alanine-Intercalated Layered Double Hydroxides as Highly Efficient Adsorbents for Phosphate with Kinetic Advantages. NANOMATERIALS 2022; 12:nano12040586. Abstract
Phosphate is the main cause of eutrophication. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are considered to be promising phosphate adsorbents due to their high affinity and large capacity. In this study, we partially intercalated zwitterionic glycine and alanine into Cl-LDH (corresponding to MgAl-LDH with interlayer anion Cl−) and synthesized efficient inorganic–organic nanohybrids for phosphate removal with kinetic advantages. Gly-Cl-LDH, Ala-Cl-LDH and Cl-LDH were characterized, and their phosphate adsorption performances under the influence of environment factors (e.g., solution pH, coexisting anions, contact time and phosphate concentration) were investigated. The results show that Gly-Cl-LDH and Ala-Cl-LDH had larger specific surface areas and larger interlayer spaces than Cl-LDH, and exhibited better adsorption performance at a lower pH and better adsorption selectivity against SO42−. Kinetic experiments indicated that Gly-Cl-LDH and Ala-Cl-LDH can reduce phosphate concentrations to a lower level in a shorter time. The pseudo-second-order kinetic constants of Gly-Cl-LDH and Ala-Cl-LDH were 1.27 times and 3.17 times of Cl-LDH, respectively (R2 > 0.996). The maximum adsorption capacities derived from a Langmuir model of Cl-LDH, Gly-Cl-LDH and Ala-Cl-LDH are 63.2 mg-P/L, 55.8 mg-P/L and 58.2 mg-P/L, respectively, which showed superiority over the prevailing phosphate adsorbents. This research provides highly efficient adsorbents for removing phosphate from aqueous solutions.

Ignored effects of phosphite (P +III) on the growth responses of three typical algae species. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2022; 294:118672. Abstract
Nowadays, the ubiquitous distribution and increasing abundance of P+III in waterbodies have caused serious concerns regarding its bioavailability and potential toxicity. However, our knowledge on these issues is relatively limited. We addressed previously unknown effects of P+III on three dominate algae species i.e. Microcystic aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), Chlorella pyrenoidesa (C. pyrenoidesa) and Cyclotella. sp in eutrophic waterbodies in China. Remarkable declines in biomass, specific growth rate and Chl-a of algae cells treated with 0.01-0.7 mg/L P+III as sole or an alternative P source were observed, indicating P+III had an inhibitory effect on the algal growth. Besides, the intracellular enzyme activities e.g superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly increased with P+III stress. M. aeruginosa and Cyclotella. sp cells seemed to be more sensitive to P+III toxicity than C. pyrenoidesa since cell membrane suffered more serious stress and destruction. These findings combined, it confirmed P+III could not be utilized as bioavailable P, but had certain toxicity to the tested algae. It indicated that the increased P+III abundance in eutrophic waterbodies would accelerate the algal cell death, which could have a positive effect against algal blooms. Our results provide new insights into assessing the ecological risks of P+III in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Sediment is an important source of matter that causes blackening and odor formation in a water body. The restoration of polluted sediment can suppress algae-induced black blooms to a certain degree. In this study, we compared the control effects of sediment dredging and capping with clean soil on algae-induced black blooms in Lake Taihu using indoor simulation experiments. In addition, we explored the driving effect of temperature on algae-induced black blooms using the method of gradual warming (18, 23, and 28 °C) during the experiment. No blackening of the water body was observed in the simulation stages I (18 °C) and II (23 °C), and the blackening and odor formation occurred within 3 d when the temperature increased to 28 °C in stage III, implying that high temperature was an important driving factor for algae-induced black blooms. Dredging and capping inhibited the blackening and odor formation to some extent, and the colorimetric values in the water columns were lower in the treatment groups than in the control group. At the end of the experiment, the colorimetric values of dredging and capping treatments were 56.5% and 96.7% of the colorimetric value of the control group, respectively. The control effect of dredging on the blackening elements, i.e., Fe2+ and S2- and the main odor forming compounds, i.e., dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) was observed in stage II (11-20 d) and stage III (21-27 d), respectively, and the inhibition ability of dredging to suppress algal-induced black blooms was superior than that of capping with clean soil.

Abstract
Constructed wetlands (CWs) offer a promising method to treat domestic wastewater in rural areas, but CWs usually limiting in nitrogen removal and large area. In this study, zeolite and pyrite were used to construct tidal wetlands to address the problems of insufficient oxygen supply and carbon source. The results show that the fully drained wetland achieved the highest ammonia removal load of 34.67 ± 1.72 g/(m2·d) with 8.57 ± 1.13 mg/L of effluent. Pyrite was found to compensate for the lack of carbon source in the denitrification process in half-drained wetland, which achieved a 78.36 ± 5.3% TN removal rate with 7.09 ± 1.85 mg/L effluent concentration. Pyrite released Fe(II) to promote nitrate reduction for denitrification in the subsequent flooded period. Microbial community analysis indicates that the tidal flow constructed wetlands simultaneously achieved nitrification and denitrification by the coupling of in-situ zeolite regeneration and Fe(II) oxidation denitrification.

Abstract
In this study, two denitrification bio-filters adopted polycaprolactone (PCL) and sodium acetate (NaAc) as polymer and water-soluble carbon sources respectively. With the increasing influent nitrate concentrations, NaAc bio-filter always had shorter HRT to achieve complete nitrate removal. Furthermore, the optimal volumetric denitrification rate in NaAc bio-filter was 0.728 g N/(L·d), which was higher than 0.561 g N/(L·d) in PCL bio-filter. For nitrates removal, the costs of bio-filters supported by NaAc and PCL were 24.93 and 120.25 CNY/kg N respectively. Although Proteobacteria in PCL bio-filter was abundant with 83.98%, NaAc bio-filter had better denitrification performance, due to the appropriate ratio of nitrate removal microorganisms and organic matters degradation organisms. The total abundance value of the denitrification genera is NaAc (16.06%) < PCL (41.19%). However, PCL bio-filter had poor denitrification performance, due to the lower adequacy of PCL depolymerization enzymes and the low expression of the key genes for denitrification.

Abstract
The high-density distribution patterns of the nutrients (C, N, P) and heavy metals (Fe, Mg, Zn, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cd) in sediments from Lake Luoma, as well as their pollution status and ecological risks, were characterized, to comprehensively understand potential environmental impacts of inter-basin water transfers. TN, TP, and OM were measured from 162.50 to 4360.00 mg kg-1, 165.00 to 1302.50 mg kg-1, and 1% to 13%, which were primarily accumulated in the eastern, northwest, and western regions, respectively. A total of 8 heavy metals except for Fe generally exhibited a similar distribution pattern, reflected by a gradually decreasing trend from northwest to southeast region. The averaged concentrations of heavy metals decreased as follows: Fe > Mg > Zn > Cr > Pb > Ni > Cu > Cd. Comprehensive pollution risk assessments indicated that the sediments of Lake Luoma were heavily polluted by TN, OM, and Cd. Multivariate statistical analyses demonstrated that the main pollution sources of Zn and Ni were fertilizers and pesticides, Cd and Pb are mainly derived from industrial wastewater, and TN and OM may come from natural and agricultural factors. This research can provide data support for water pollution control and drinking water diversion management in the Lake Luoma basin.

Abstract
In this study, we determined the mechanisms and kinetics of the degradations of ibuprofen (IBP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and identified the active species contributions in ferrous ion (Fe(II))/free chlorine (FC) system. Reactive chlorine species (RCS) were the major contributor to the degradations of IBP (73.0%) and SMX (59.3%), respectively, at pH 3. Due to the low reaction rates between Fe(IV) and target pollutants (kFe(IV), IBP = (1.5 ± 0.03) × 103 M-1 s-1 and kFe(IV), SMX = (4.8 ± 0.2) × 103 M-1 s-1) and the low [Fe(IV)]ss ((5.0 ± 0.6) × 10-8 M), Fe(IV) was not the main contributor and only contributed 0.17% and 0.86% to the degradation of IBP and SMX, respectively, at pH 3. The degradations of pharmaceuticals were facilitated by acidic conditions. Chloride (Cl-) accelerated the degradation of SMX and had a weak effect on the degradation of IBP. Natural organic matter limited the degradation of IBP and SMX. Overall, we demonstrated that multiple active oxidants (Fe(IV) and RCS) are produced by Fe(II)/FC and elucidated the mechanism of active oxidants degradation of pollutants.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical and prognosis of children with kidney retransplantation. Methods: Clinical data of 11 children who underwent kidney retransplantation from January 2011 to December 2020 in Department of Nephrology, Children's Hospital of Fudan University were retrospectilely analyzed. The clinical data including demographic parameters, primary diagnosis, characteristics in the follow-up of renal allograft were analyzed. Results: Totally 11 cases received secondary renal transplantation (male 6, female 5). They were initially diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at the age of 11.9 (7.4, 13.3) years. The median duration of dialysis was 22.1 (3.5, 36.5) months. In the first transplantation, recipient age was 13.9 (11.1, 15.2) years. Ten cases received donation from cardiac death donor (DCD) (9 cases received donors aged less than one year, 5 of them received whole kidney transplantation and one case received donor aged one to three years) and 1 case with living-related donor. Ten graft failures occurred within 1 month after renal transplantation and the other one occurred at the fifth month after transplantation. The causes included vascular factors (9 cases), rejection (1 case) and primary non-function (1 case). In the second transplantation, recipient age was 14.7 (11.7, 16.2) years. All the 11 children received dialysis (7 with PD and 4 with HD) and successfully completed the second transplantation. The median time between the two transplants was 210 (16, 1 041) days. Donors were all DCD donors from 3 years of age or older. The mean follow-up duration was (42±15) months. The estimated glomerular filtration rate was (85±34)ml/(min·1.73 m2) when the last investigation after kidney retransplantation with the kidney and patient all survived. Conclusions: Kidney retransplantation may have better prognosis in children. Dialysis transition during waiting period and DCD donor from 3 years of age or older can effectively ensure the success of kidney retransplantation.

Abstract
Global lakes serve as a key natural source of methane (CH4) and suffer from increasing hypoxia due to unprecedented anthropogenic activities and climate change. A black bloom is a temporary hypoxia triggered by a longstanding algal bloom, which facilitates CH4 production by creating reducing conditions and abundant algae-sourced organic carbon. One-year investigations were conducted to examine temporal CH4 dynamics in the water and sediment pore water in black bloom prone areas (BBPAs) in Lake Taihu, China, where there had been at least two recorded black bloom events. The CH4 in the water changed significantly with time (p < 0.001), with the highest concentrations appearing in warm months when an abnormal lower dissolved oxygen content was observed at different sites, which were one to two orders of magnitude higher than other months. Compared with the control site, there were significantly higher CH4 concentrations in BBPA waters (p < 0.001), which was consistent with the higher CH4 in the sediment pore water. Methane dynamics in the water showed significant positive correlations with temperature, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonia-N, and soluble reactive phosphorus (p < 0.05), but showed a significant inverse correlation with dissolved oxygen (p < 0.01). Redundancy analysis indicated dissolved oxygen made the largest contribution to CH4 dynamics in the BBPAs. A significant increase in the CH4 in water will turn BBPAs into temporary hot spots with substantial CH4 emissions with the appearance of black blooms. The results provide new insights into understanding future CH4 dynamics under globally prevailing algal blooms and climate change.

Abstract
Objective: To propose a method of cervical cytology screening based on deep convolutional neural network and compare it with the diagnosis of cytologists. Method: The deep segmentation network was used to extract 618 333 regions of interest (ROI) from 5, 516 cytological pathological images. Combined with the experience of physicians, the deep classification network with the ability to analyze ROI was trained. The classification results were used to construct features, and the decision model was used to complete the classification of cytopathological images. Results: The sensitivity and specificity were 89.72%, 58.48%, 33.95% and 95.94% respectively. Among the smears derived from four different preparation methods, this algorithm had the best effect on natural fallout with a sensitivity of 91.10%, specificity of 69.32%, positive predictive rate of 41.41%, and negative predictive rate of 97.03%. Conclusion: Deep convolutional neural network image recognition technology can be applied to cervical cytology screening.

A vascularized bone graft harvested from the dorsal base of the third metacarpal bone for the treatment of scaphoid nonunion. HAND SURGERY & REHABILITATION 2021; 40:439-447. [PMID: 33839334 DOI: 10.1016/j.hansur.2021.03.015] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/18/2020] [Revised: 03/10/2021] [Accepted: 03/31/2021] [Indexed: 11/19/2022]
Abstract
The purpose of this retrospective study was to introduce the use of an alternative vascularized bone graft for treating scaphoid non-union. The vascularized bone graft was harvested from the dorsal base of the third metacarpal bone. From May 2014 to September 2017, 29 patients with scaphoid non-union were treated. Grip and pinch strengths were compared to the contralateral side. The patients rated wrist joint pain on a visual analogue scale. Wrist function was assessed on Mayo Wrist Score. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. 18 scaphoids healed at 6 weeks and the other 11 at 16 weeks. Follow-up ranged from 28 to 73 months, for a mean 48 months. At final follow-up, mean wrist flexion had improved from 65° (range, 51°-81°) preoperatively to 72° (range, 61-78°) (p > 0.05), for a contralateral value of 74° (range, 65°-86°). Mean extension had improved from 56° (range, 44°-72°) to 60° (range, 47°-76°) (p > 0.05) for a contralateral value of 66° (range, 52°-80°). Mean wrist pain improved from 4 (range, 3-8) to 2 (range, 0-4) (p < 0.05). Mean pinch strength improved from 6.4 kg (range, 5.2-7.3 kg) to 8.6 kg (6.1-9.9 kg) (p < 0.05). Mayo Wrist Score improved from 49 (range, 10-65) to 92 (range, 70-100) (p < 0.05). Transferring a vascularized bone graft harvested from the base of the third metacarpal bone was an effective alternative for the treatment of scaphoid non-union, achieving bone healing and normal wrist function without significant donor-site morbidity. TYPE OF STUDY/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic IV.
