Abstract
Digestive system cancers are prevalent diseases with a high mortality rate, posing a significant threat to public health and economic burden. The diagnosis and treatment of digestive system cancer confront conventional cancer problems, such as tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance. Single-cell sequencing (SCS) emerged at times required and has developed from single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) to the single-cell multi-omics era represented by single-cell spatial transcriptomics (ST). This article comprehensively reviews the advances of single-cell omics technology in the study of digestive system tumors. While analyzing and summarizing the research cases, vital details on the sequencing platform, sample information, sampling method, and key findings are provided. Meanwhile, we summarize the commonly used SCS platforms and their features, as well as the advantages of multi-omics technologies in combination. Finally, the development trends and prospects of the application of single-cell multi-omics technology in digestive system cancer research are prospected.

Abstract
Myopia, the most prevalent eye condition, has sparked notable interest regarding its origin and prevention. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNA strands typically consisting of 18-24 nucleotides. They play a central role in post-transcriptional gene regulation and are closely associated with both normal and pathological processes in organisms. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics have provided novel insights into miRNA expression and its regulatory role in myopia. This review discusses the distinct expression patterns, regulatory functions, and potential pathways of miRNAs involved in the onset and progression of myopia. The primary objective of this review was to provide valuable insights into molecular mechanisms underlying myopia and the contribution of miRNAs. These insights are expected to pave the way for further exploration of the molecular mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical applications of myopia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous reports have suggested that coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-based radiomics analysis is a potentially helpful tool for assessing vulnerable plaques. We aimed to investigate whether coronary radiomic analysis of CCTA images could identify vulnerable plaques in patients with stable angina pectoris. METHODS This retrospective study included patients initially diagnosed with stable angina pectoris. Patients were randomly divided into either the training or test dataset at an 8 : 2 ratio. Radiomics features were extracted from CCTA images. Radiomics models for predicting vulnerable plaques were developed using the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. The model performance was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC); the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to compare the diagnostic performance using the two cohorts. RESULTS A total of 158 patients were included in the analysis. The SVM radiomics model performed well in predicting vulnerable plaques, with AUC values of 0.977 and 0.875 for the training and test cohorts, respectively. With optimal cutoff values, the radiomics model showed accuracies of 0.91 and 0.882 in the training and test cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSION Although further larger population studies are necessary, this novel CCTA radiomics model may identify vulnerable plaques in patients with stable angina pectoris.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Avascular necrosis of the humeral head (AVN) is characterized by osteonecrosis secondary to disrupted blood flow to the glenohumeral joint. Following collapse of the humeral head, arthroplasty, namely total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) or humeral head arthroplasty (hemiarthroplasty) is recommended standard of care. The literature is limited to underpowered and small sample sizes in comparing arthroplasty modalities. Therefore, the aims of this study were (1) to compare the 10-year survivorship of TSA and hemiarthroplasty in the treatment of AVN of the humeral head and (2) to identify differences in their revision etiologies. METHODS Patients who underwent primary TSA and hemiarthroplasty for AVN were identified using the PearlDiver database. TSA patients were matched by age, gender, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to the hemiarthroplasty cohort in a 4:1 ratio since TSA patients were generally older, sicker, and more often female. The 10-year cumulative incidence rate of all-cause revision was determined using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Multivariable analysis was conducted using Cox Proportional Hazard modeling. Chi-squared analysis was conducted to compare the indications for revisions between matched cohorts including periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), dislocation, mechanical loosening, broken implants, periprosthetic fracture, and stiffness. RESULTS In total, 4,825 patients undergoing TSA and 1,969 patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty for AVN were included in this study. The unmatched 10-year cumulative incidence of revision for patients who underwent TSA and hemiarthroplasty was 7.0% and 7.7%, respectively. The matched 10-year cumulative incidence of revision for patients who underwent TSA and hemiarthroplasty was 6.7% and 8.0%, respectively. When comparing the unmatched cohorts, TSA patients were at significantly higher risk of 10-year all-cause revision (HR: 1.39; P = 0.017) when compared to hemiarthroplasty patients. After matching, there was no significant difference in risk of 10-year all-cause revision (HR: 1.29; P = 0.148) and no difference in the observed etiologies for revision (P > 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION After controlling for confounders, only 6.7% of TSA and 8.0% hemiarthroplasties for humeral head AVN were revised within 10-years of index surgery. The demonstrated high and comparable long-term survivorship for both modalities supports the utilization of either for the AVN induced humeral head collapse.

Abstract
Neurocognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and postoperative cognitive dysfunction, are non-psychiatric brain syndromes in which a significant decline in cognitive function causes great trauma to the mental status of the patient. The lack of effective treatments for neurocognitive disorders imposes a considerable burden on society, including a substantial economic impact. Over the past few decades, the identification of resveratrol, a natural plant compound, has provided researchers with an opportunity to formulate novel strategies for the treatment of neurocognitive disorders. This is because resveratrol effectively protects the brain of those with neurocognitive disorders by targeting some mechanisms such as inflammation and oxidative stress. This article reviews the status of recent research investigating the use of resveratrol for the treatment of different neurocognitive disorders. By examining the possible mechanisms of action of resveratrol and the shared mechanisms of different neurocognitive disorders, treatments for neurocognitive disorders may be further clarified.

This editorial explores the composite drawing of a "typical" brachial plexus portrayed by Abram T. Kerr in 1918. This composite drawing of the typical brachial plexus stands as a critical contribution to the field of anatomy and surgery, and encapsulates the most prevalent patterns of formation, branching, and origins within the brachial plexus, offering a statistical map of its common variants. Kerr portrays the typical brachial plexus as a foundational resource for anatomists and medical professionals seeking to navigate the intricate landscape of this neural structure. It serves as a hypothetical model, reflecting the common arrangement of trunks, cords, and branches, shedding light on the typical composition of the plexus observed in most individuals. Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in adolescent athletes based on sex, sport, and sport affiliation. METHODS A literature search was performed using three online databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE) from database inception to November 2023 per the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Included studies consisted of level I or II studies reporting on ACL injury exposures in time (hours) or injuries per 1000 athlete-exposures (AE) (1 game or practice) in adolescent athletes. Exclusion criteria consisted of non-English studies, case reports, animal/cadaveric studies, and review articles. Methodological quality and bias assessment of the included studies was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. ACL injuries were analyzed and pooled to calculate incidence rates (IRs), per-season risk, and relative risk (RR) based on sex, sport, and sport affiliation (club sport participation vs school sport participation). RESULTS A total of 1,389 ACL injuries over 19,134,167 AE's were identified (IR, 0.075 [95% CI, 0.071-0.079]). Of these, 670 ACL injuries were reported in female athletes over 7,549,892 AEs (IR, 0.089 [95% CI, 0.087-0.091]) with 719 in males over 11,584,275 AEs (IR, 0.062 [95% CI, 0.058-0.067]). The greatest RR for ACL injury in females was in soccer (RR, 3.12 [95% CI, 2.58-3.77]) for AEs. The greatest per-season risk of ACL injuries reported in female athletes occurred in soccer (1.08%), basketball (1.03%), and gymnastics (1.01%). The greatest per-season risk of ACL injuries reported in male athletes occurred in football (0.82%), lacrosse (0.64%), and soccer (0.35%). Club sport participation, in both AE (RR, 3.94 [95% CI, 3.19-4.87]) and hours of exposure (RR, 1.57 [95% CI, 1.07-2.28]), demonstrated an increased risk of ACL injury. CONCLUSION The risk of ACL injuries was 1.56-fold greater in adolescent female athletes compared to male athletes. The highest-risk sport for females was soccer. Participation in club sports possessed higher rates of injury compared to school sports.

Abstract
PURPOSE Contrast-enhanced spectral imaging (CEM) is a new mammography technique, but its diagnostic value in dense breasts is still inconclusive. We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating the diagnostic performance of CEM for suspicious findings in dense breasts. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched systematically until August 6, 2023. Prospective and retrospective studies were included to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CEM for suspicious findings in dense breasts. The QUADAS-2 tool was used to evaluate the quality and risk of bias of the included studies. STATA V.16.0 and Review Manager V.5.3 were used to meta-analyze the included studies. RESULTS A total of 10 studies (827 patients, 958 lesions) were included. These 10 studies reported the diagnostic performance of CEM for the workup of suspicious lesions in patients with dense breasts. The summary sensitivity and summary specificity were 0.95 (95% CI, 0.92-0.97) and 0.81 (95% CI, 0.70-0.89), respectively. Enhanced lesions, circumscribed margins, and malignancy were statistically correlated. The relative malignancy OR value of the enhanced lesions was 28.11 (95% CI, 6.84-115.48). The relative malignancy OR value of circumscribed margins was 0.17 (95% CI, 0.07-0.45). CONCLUSION CEM has high diagnostic performance in the workup of suspicious findings in dense breasts, and when lesions are enhanced and have irregular margins, they are often malignant.

Abstract
Accurate quantification of dissolved oxygen (DO) is critically important for the protection and management of aquatic ecosystems. Successful applications have utilized mechanistic and data-driven models to simulate DO content in aquatic ecosystems. However, mechanistic models present challenges due to their complex and difficult-to-solve conditions, making them less portable. Additionally, data-driven model predictions are hindered by the challenge of numerous input variables, impacting both the running speed and prediction performance of the model. To address these challenges, water quality data and meteorological data of the Tanjiang River were obtained. The maximum information coefficient (MIC) input variable selection technique was employed to identify primary environmental factors influencing DO changes. Furthermore, coupled with support vector regression (SVR), two models (SVR and MIC-SVR) were employed to estimate the DO concentration of the Tanjiang River, and the optimal model was established. The results indicated a shift in the primary pollution factor from ammonia nitrogen to total phosphorus after recent treatment in the Tanjiang River. In comparison with the SVR model, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the MIC-SVR model was reduced by 4.46%, and the Nash-efficiency coefficient (NSE) was improved by 45.85%. In addition, study of kernel function selection revealed that considering as many kernel functions as possible is necessary for improving the performance of the SVR model. Conclusively, the proposed MIC-SVR model serves as an effective tool to analyze the relationship between DO and environmental factors, identifying the primary causes of low DO, and accurately predict the DO concentration in the Tanjiang River (especially in its middle and lower reaches), thus providing a reference for governmental decision-making on water environmental protection and water resource management.

Abstract
Lianhua Qingwen capsule is a famous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription that is widely used for the treatment of respiratory diseases in China. To facilitate in-depth and global characterization of the chemical constituents of Lianhua Qingwen capsule, a profiling method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (UHPLC-FT-ICR-MS) was applied in both positive and negative ion modes for the comprehensive characterization of the chemical profiles of Lianhua Qingwen capsule. A total of 596 compounds were identified or tentatively characterized, including 137 flavonoids, 46 phenylpropanoids, 43 phenylethanoid glycosides, 145 terpenoids, 83 organic acids and their derivatives, 15 quinones, 39 alkaloids, 32 alcohol glycosides and 56 other compounds. Thus, this results widely extended and enriched the chemical constituents of Lianhua Qingwen capsule, which will provide comprehensive and valuable information for its quality control and further pharmacological study, facilitate understanding the effective substance and pharmacodynamic material basis, thereby providing a solid foundation for further development of the Lianhuaqingwen capsule.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mortality is a quality indicator that may affect expenditures. Revisions for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are, on average, more expensive and exhibit higher morbidity than aseptic revisions, although reimbursement is similar. Therefore, we sought to determine (1) impact on mortality rates of revision total hip and/or knee arthroplasty performed for PJI diagnosis (septic) versus aseptic revisions, at any point in time, and (2) mortality predictors among PJI patients. METHODS Retrospective chart review of 978 consecutive patients who underwent revision at a single institution (January 2015 to November 2020). All revisions were evaluated, and it was determined whether patients had a revision for PJI at any point in time or not. Two groups were compared: (1) patients with septic revision(s) (n = 350) and (2) patients who only underwent aseptic revision(s) (n = 628). Demographics and mortality status at latest follow-up (mean 3 years, range: 0 to 18 years, from first revision ever) were assessed. Mortality status was also separately assessed among patients who exclusively had hip revision(s), or solely knee revision(s), or both. Multivariate regression analysis (Cox) was used to determine whether PJI diagnosis was an independent mortality predictor. Among PJI patients, potential mortality predictors were evaluated. RESULTS Overall, 65 patients died (6.6%). The septic cohort had significantly more men and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class-IV patients. Mortality rates were 10.9% and 4.3% (P < .0001) for septic and aseptic revision groups, respectively. After controlling for sex, ASA, and number of revisions, PJI diagnosis was a significant mortality predictor (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.69, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.5 to 4.7, P = .001). Among PJI patients, age (HR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.08, P = .009) and ASA (HR: 4.02, 95% CI: 1.67 to 9.67, P = .002) were independent predictors. CONCLUSIONS Having a revision due to PJI diagnosis was associated with 2.5 times increased mortality. Therefore, more accurate coding capturing the complexity and morbidity of revisions for PJI diagnosis is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study on predicting the differentiation grade of colorectal cancer (CRC) based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not been reported yet. Developing a non-invasive model to predict the differentiation grade of CRC is of great value. AIM To develop and validate machine learning-based models for predicting the differentiation grade of CRC based on T2-weighted images (T2WI). METHODS We retrospectively collected the preoperative imaging and clinical data of 315 patients with CRC who underwent surgery from March 2018 to July 2023. Patients were randomly assigned to a training cohort (n = 220) or a validation cohort (n = 95) at a 7:3 ratio. Lesions were delineated layer by layer on high-resolution T2WI. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was applied to screen for radiomic features. Radiomics and clinical models were constructed using the multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm. These radiomic features and clinically relevant variables (selected based on a significance level of P < 0.05 in the training set) were used to construct radiomics-clinical models. The performance of the three models (clinical, radiomic, and radiomic-clinical model) were evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS After feature selection, eight radiomic features were retained from the initial 1781 features to construct the radiomic model. Eight different classifiers, including logistic regression, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours, random forest, extreme trees, extreme gradient boosting, light gradient boosting machine, and MLP, were used to construct the model, with MLP demonstrating the best diagnostic performance. The AUC of the radiomic-clinical model was 0.862 (95%CI: 0.796-0.927) in the training cohort and 0.761 (95%CI: 0.635-0.887) in the validation cohort. The AUC for the radiomic model was 0.796 (95%CI: 0.723-0.869) in the training cohort and 0.735 (95%CI: 0.604-0.866) in the validation cohort. The clinical model achieved an AUC of 0.751 (95%CI: 0.661-0.842) in the training cohort and 0.676 (95%CI: 0.525-0.827) in the validation cohort. All three models demonstrated good accuracy. In the training cohort, the AUC of the radiomic-clinical model was significantly greater than that of the clinical model (P = 0.005) and the radiomic model (P = 0.016). DCA confirmed the clinical practicality of incorporating radiomic features into the diagnostic process. CONCLUSION In this study, we successfully developed and validated a T2WI-based machine learning model as an auxiliary tool for the preoperative differentiation between well/moderately and poorly differentiated CRC. This novel approach may assist clinicians in personalizing treatment strategies for patients and improving treatment efficacy.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics of diarrheagenic Escherichia (E. ) coli infection in infectious diarrhea outpatients aged 15 years and older in Shanghai and provide evidence for the development of disease control strategies. Methods: Based on multistage systematic sampling, diarrhea surveillance was conducted in 22 sentinel hospitals in Shanghai, the information about cases' demographic, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics were collected. Stool samples were collected for the detection and typing of diarrheagenic E. coli by local centers for disease control and prevention. The positive rate of diarrheagenic E. coli in different populations and seasons from 2014 to 2021 were analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted by using χ2 test. Results: In 15 185 diarrhea cases, 8.05% (1 222/15 185) were positive for diarrheagenic E. coli. The positive rate was higher in men (8.74%, 684/7 824) than in women (7.31%, 538/7 361). The positive rate was highest in age group 15-29 years (9.14%, 335/3 665) and the annual positive rate was highest in 2021 (10.21%, 83/813), the differences were all significant (P<0.05). In the 1 264 strains of diarrheagenic E. coli analyzed through PCR, enterotoxingenic E. coli was the most frequently identified pathogen (50.24%, 635/1 264), followed by enteroadhesive E. coli (27.93%, 353/1 264), and enteropathogenic E. coli (21.36%, 270/1 264). The positive rate of diarrheagenic E. coli showed obvious seasonality with peak in summer (13.92%, 774/5 562) (χ2=495.73, P<0.001). Conclusions: Diarrheagenic E. coli has become a prominent pathogen in infectious diarrhea cases in Shanghai, the disease can occur all the year round with incidence peak during summer and autumn. Predominant subtypes included enterotoxingenic E. coli, enteroadhesive E. coli and enteropathogenic E. coli. Targeted prevention and control strategies are needed for diarrheagenic E. coli-induced infectious diarrhea in different age groups, seasons and for different types of infections.

Abstract
Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phosphorus (P) are widespread pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, presenting potential ecological risks. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of their relationships in sediments. In this study, we investigated the co-occurrence and behaviors of the OPEs and P in urban river sediments. The results indicated serious OPE and P pollution in the study area, with substantial spatial variations in the contents and compositions. The OPE congeners and P fractions exhibited different correlations, particularly more significant linear relationships (R = 0.455 - 0.816, p < 0.05) were observed between the aryl-OPEs and P fractions, potentially due to the influence from sources, physicochemical properties, and total organic carbon. About 56 to 71% of variability in predicting the concentrations of aryl-OPE can be explained by the multiple linear regression model using the Fe/Al- and Ca-bound P contents. The study regions exhibited greater aryl-OPEs ecological risks were consistent with the regions with more serious Total P pollution levels. This study represents the first report demonstrating the potential of Fe/Al-P and Ca-P contents in predicting aryl-OPE contents in heavily polluted sediments, providing a useful reference to comprehensively assess the occurrence and environmental behaviors of aryl-OPEs in anthropogenic polluted sediments.

Abstract
The association between gut microbiota and the development of heart failure has become a research hotspot in recent years and the impact of gut microbiota on heart failure has attracted growing interest. From 2006 to 2021, the global research on gut microbiota and heart failure has gradually expanded, indicating a developed and promising research field. There were 40 countries, 196 institutions, and 257 authors involved in the publication on the relationship between gut microbiota and heart failure, respectively. In patients with heart failure, inadequate visceral perfusion leads to ischemia and intestinal edema, which compromise the gut barrier. This subsequently results in the translocation of bacteria and bacterial metabolites into the circulatory system and causes local and systemic inflammatory responses. The gastrointestinal tract contains the largest number of immune cells in the human body and gut microbiota play important roles in the immune system by promoting immune tolerance to symbiotic bacteria. Studies have shown that probiotics can act on gut microorganisms, thereby increasing choline metabolism and reducing plasma TMA and TMAO concentrations, thus inhibiting the development of heart failure. Meanwhile, probiotics induce the production of inflammatory suppressors to maintain gut immune stability and inhibit the progression of heart failure by reducing ventricular remodeling. Here, we review the current understanding of gut microbiota-driven immune dysfunction in experimental and clinical heart failure, as well as the therapeutic interventions that could be used to address these issues.

Abstract
Tidal river networks are affected by the tide and influenced by complex factors related to sediment oxygen demand (SOD). In this study, we used chemical inhibition to measure the oxygen consumption of different types of SOD to explore the specific oxygen consumption mechanism of sediments. Then, we evaluated the diffusion fluxes of the sediment-water interface and factors affecting SOD using diffusive gradients in thin films. Total SOD in the tidal river network area of the Pearl River basin was ∼0.5928 g/m2/day, which was 8.47% higher than that in the non-tidal river network area but lower than that in black and odorous water reported previously. In the tidal river network area, biological SOD was 15.6% higher in summer than in winter, and the difference in total SOD was greatly influenced by human activity. We observed a significant effect of sediment on SOD in winter, whereas there were no significant correlations between sediment and SOD in summer. Different particle-size distributions lead to different organic matter contents, resulting in different biological SOD ratios between seasons. Our study found that seasonal tidal changes can affect ion exchange at the sediment water interface, leading to changes in SOD.These findings will be of great significance for the study of phenomena associated with low dissolved oxygen in tidal river networks and provide directions for future sediment pollution control.

Abstract
Myopia, a common ophthalmic disorder, places a high economic burden on individuals and society. Genetic and environmental factors influence myopia progression; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unelucidated. This paper reviews recent advances in circadian rhythm, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), and dopamine (DA) signalling in myopia and proposes the hypothesis of a circadian rhythm brain retinal circuit in myopia progression. The search of relevant English articles was conducted in the PubMed databases until June 2023. Based on the search, emerging evidence indicated that circadian rhythm was associated with myopia, including circadian genes Bmal1, Cycle, and Per. In both humans and animals, the ocular morphology and physiology show rhythmic oscillations. Theoretically, such ocular rhythms are regulated locally and indirectly via the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which receives signal from the ipRGCs. Compared with the conventional retinal ganglion cells, ipRGCs can sense the presence of light because of specific expression of melanopsin. Light, together with ipRGCs and DA signalling, plays a crucial role in both circadian rhythm and myopia. In summary, regarding myopia progression, a circadian rhythm brain retinal circuit involving ipRGCs and DA signalling has not been well established. However, based on the relationship between circadian rhythm, ipRGCs, and DA signalling in myopia, we hypothesised a circadian rhythm brain retinal circuit.

Abstract
Background Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is one of the most ubiquitous complications of sepsis and is characterized by cognitive impairment, poor prognosis, and a lack of uniform clinical diagnostic criteria. Therefore, this study investigated the early diagnostic and prognostic value of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in SAE. Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis systematically searched for clinical trials with serum NSE information in patients with sepsis in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases from their inception to April 10, 2023. Included studies were assessed for quality and risk of bias using The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy-2 tool. The meta-analysis of the included studies was performed using Stata 17.0 and Review Manager version 5.4. Findings Eleven studies were included in this meta-analysis involving 1259 serum samples from 947 patients with sepsis. Our results showed that the serum NSE levels of patients with SAE were higher than those of the non-encephalopathy sepsis group (mean deviation, MD,12.39[95% CI 8.27-16.50, Z = 5.9, p < 0.00001]), and the serum NSE levels of patients with sepsis who died were higher than those of survivors (MD,4.17[95% CI 2.66-5.68, Z = 5.41, p < 0.00001]). Conclusion Elevated serum NSE levels in patients with sepsis are associated with the early diagnosis of SAE and mortality; therefore, serum NSE probably is a valid biomarker for the early diagnosis and prognosis of patients with SAE. Abstract
Plant intracellular nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs) analyzed to date oligomerize and form resistosomes upon activation to initiate immune responses. Some NLRs are encoded in tightly linked co-regulated head-to-head genes whose products function together as pairs. We uncover the oligomerization requirements for different Arabidopsis paired CHS3-CSA1 alleles. These pairs form resting-state heterodimers that oligomerize into complexes distinct from NLRs analyzed previously. Oligomerization requires both conserved and allele-specific features of the respective CHS3 and CSA1 Toll-like interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domains. The receptor kinases BAK1 and BIRs inhibit CHS3-CSA1 pair oligomerization to maintain the CHS3-CSA1 heterodimer in an inactive state. Our study reveals that paired NLRs hetero-oligomerize and likely form a distinctive "dimer of heterodimers" and that structural heterogeneity is expected even among alleles of closely related paired NLRs.

Abstract
Paradoxically, cigarette smoking is associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). This led us to hypothesize that carbon monoxide (CO) levels, which are constitutively but modestly elevated in smokers, might contribute to neuroprotection. Using rodent models of PD based on α-synuclein (αSyn) accumulation and oxidative stress, we show that low-dose CO mitigates neurodegeneration and reduces αSyn pathology. Oral CO administration activated signaling cascades mediated by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), which have been implicated in limiting oxidative stress, and in promoting αSyn degradation, thereby conferring neuroprotection. Consistent with a neuroprotective effect of smoking, HO-1 levels in cerebrospinal fluid were higher in human smokers compared to nonsmokers. Moreover, in PD brain samples, HO-1 levels were higher in neurons without αSyn pathology. Thus, CO in rodent PD models reduces pathology and increases oxidative stress responses, phenocopying possible protective effects of smoking evident in PD patients. These data highlight the potential for low-dose CO modulated pathways to slow symptom onset and limit pathology in PD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption is an infrequent but devastating complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Our knowledge of specific risk factors for this complication is limited by the current literature. Thus, this study aimed to identify potential risk factors for quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption following TKA. METHODS A retrospective cohort analysis was performed using the PearlDiver Administrative Claims Database. Patients undergoing TKA without a prior history of quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption were identified. Quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption included rupture of the quadriceps tendon, patellar tendon, or fracture of the patella. Patients who had a minimum of 5 years of follow-up after TKA were included. A total of 126,819 patients were included. Among them, 517 cases of quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption occurred (incidence 0.41%). Hypothesized risk factors were compared between those who had postoperative quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption and those who did not. RESULTS On multivariate analysis, increased Charlson Comorbidity Index (odds ratio (OR): 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.07 to 1.13]; P < .001), obesity (OR: 1.49, 95% CI [1.24 to 1.79]; P < .001), and fluoroquinolone use any time after TKA (OR: 1.24, 95% CI [1.01 to 1.52]; P = .036) were significantly associated with quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption. CONCLUSIONS Our study identified the incidence of quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption following TKA as 0.41%. Identified risk factors for quadriceps tendon extensor mechanism disruption after TKA include an increased Charlson Comorbidity Index, obesity, and use of fluoroquinolones postoperatively.

Abstract
Objective Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made significant inroads into various domains, including medicine, raising concerns about algorithmic bias. This study investigates the presence of biases in generative AI programs, with a specific focus on gender and racial representations across 19 medical residency specialties. Methodology This comparative study utilized DALL-E2 to generate faces representing 19 distinct residency training specialties, as identified by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which were then compared to the AAMC's residency specialty breakdown with respect to race and gender. Results Our findings reveal an alignment between OpenAI's DALL-E2's predictions and the current demographic landscape of medical residents, suggesting an absence of algorithmic bias in this AI model. Conclusion This revelation gives rise to important ethical considerations. While AI excels at pattern recognition, it inherits and mirrors the biases present in its training data. To combat AI bias, addressing real-world disparities is imperative. Initiatives to promote inclusivity and diversity within medicine are commendable and contribute to reshaping medical education. This study underscores the need for ongoing efforts to dismantle barriers and foster inclusivity in historically male-dominated medical fields, particularly for underrepresented populations. Ultimately, our findings underscore the crucial role of real-world data quality in mitigating AI bias. As AI continues to shape healthcare and education, the pursuit of equitable, unbiased AI applications should remain at the forefront of these transformative endeavors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Esketamine, the S(+) enantiomer of ketamine, exhibits good anesthetic efficacy and controllability; however, its potential clinical applications, particularly in sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE), remain underexplored. SAE involves the development of diffuse brain dysfunction after sepsis, leading to markedly increased sepsis-related disability and mortality. In this study, we investigated the effects of esketamine pretreatment on acute SAE. METHODS Mice were randomly divided into four groups: control (C, n = 22), acute SAE (L, n = 22), esketamine pretreatment + acute SAE (EL, n = 22), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) inhibitor (ML385) + esketamine pretreatment + acute SAE (N + EL, n = 22). Acute SAE was established using intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 mg/kg), while controls received equal amounts of saline. The EL group received daily i.p. injections of esketamine (10 mg/kg) for 5 consecutive days, followed by LPS on day 6. The N + EL group received i.p. injections of ML385 (30 mg/kg) 1 h before esketamine pretreatment. The remainder of treatment followed the same protocol as the EL group. Behavioral tests were performed 24 h post-LPS injection, and whole blood and brain tissues were collected for further analysis. RESULTS Esketamine improved sepsis symptoms, 7-day survival, and spatial cognitive impairment, without altering locomotor activity. Moreover, esketamine reversed the LPS-induced increase in serum S100 calcium-binding protein β and neuron-specific enolase levels and reduced hippocampal neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal apoptosis in the EL group. However, these neuroprotective effects of esketamine were reversed by ML385. CONCLUSION The results of our study suggest that esketamine pretreatment mitigates acute SAE, highlighting the involvement of the Nrf2/heme oxygenase-1 pathway in mediating its neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a complex and multifactorial process arising from a variety of factors, including recent surgical procedures, traumatic events, and periods of prolonged immobility. The extended period of stasis post-orthopedic surgery places patients at a notably high risk of developing DVT, and DVT-related pulmonary embolism (PE) ranks as the third most common cause of death in orthopedic surgery patients. This review examines the multifaceted risk factors contributing to the development of DVT in orthopedic patients. Additionally, it addresses the importance of DVT prophylaxis in orthopedic settings, the efficacy and safety of various prophylactic methods encompassing both mechanical and pharmacological approaches, and the economic dimensions of DVT prophylaxis, including scrutiny of cost-effectiveness and the exploration of strategies for optimization.

Abstract
lncRNA Prader Willi/Angelman Region RNA 6 (PWAR6) is considered to play a protective lncRNA in glioma, but, the role of PWAR6 in the occurrence and cisplatin resistance of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is elusive. In the study, we aimed to assess the role of PWAR6 in the cisplatin resistance of NSCLC. Based on the oebiotech and TargetScanHuman database, we predicted the interaction between PWAR6, miR-577 and PHACTR1. We then used small interfering RNA (siRNA), miRNA mimics and dual-luciferase reporter assay to explore the regulatory role of PWAR6/miR-577PHACTR1. Based on the online database, miR-577 can interact with PWAR6 and PHACTR1. Soon afterwards, we observed that the expression of PWAR6 and PHACTR1 was increased, while miR-577 expression was decreased in A549/DDP cells. And the cell viability was decreased, while cell apoptosis was increased in A549/DDP cells. What's more, PWAR6 knockdown can promote the expression of miR-577 and inhibit the expression of PHACTR1. PWAR6 knockdown elevated cell proliferation and reduced cell apoptosis of A549/DDP cells. Interestingly, we found that miR-577 can interact with PHACTR1 to regulate the proliferation and apoptosis of A549/DDP cells. To conclude, we speculated that PWAR6 knockdown elevated cell proliferation and reduced cell apoptosis of A549/DDP cells via miR-577/PHACTR1, providing the theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of NSCLC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer remains a major global health concern due to its high incidence and mortality rates. With advancements in medical treatments, an increasing number of early-stage lung cancer cases are being detected, making surgical treatment the primary option for such cases. However, this presents challenges to the physical and mental recovery of patients. Peplau known as the "mother of psychiatric associations" has formulated a theory of interpersonal relationships in nursing. Through effective communication between nurses and patients over four periods, she has established a good therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of perioperative multimodal nursing based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory on the rehabilitation of patients with surgical lung cancer. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 106 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who underwent thoracoscopic lobectomy at our department between June 2021 and April 2022. Patients were categorized into two groups according to the different nursing intervention techniques. The Peplau's group comprised 53 patients who received targeted nursing interventions, and the control group comprised 53 patients who received conventional nursing care. We observed the patients' illness uncertainty, quality of life, and clinical symptoms in both groups. RESULTS Patients in the Peplau's group had significantly lower illness uncertainty scores and a significantly higher quality of recovery than those in the control group. However, there were no significant differences in length of post-anesthesia care unit stay, complication rates, and visual analog scores between both groups. CONCLUSION The multimodal perioperative nursing based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory not only reduces the illness uncertainty of patients with lung cancer surgery and improves their QoR but also expands the application of this theory in clinical practice, guiding perioperative nursing of patients with lung cancer. IMPLICATIONS These findings provide practical information for standardized care in a hectic anesthetic care setting. IMPACT The assessed anesthesia nursing model helps reduce uncertainty and promote early recovery in patients with cancer at various stages of their disease, which expands the scope of therapeutic practice and existing theories. It also serves as a guide for care in the anesthesia recovery room. REPORTING METHOD We adhered to the relevant Equator guidelines and the checklist of items in the case-control study report. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Patients cooperated with medical staff to complete relevant scales.

Abstract
PURPOSE To systematically review the patient-reported outcomes and postoperative complications following tuberoplasty for the treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. METHODS A literature search was conducted using PubMed and EMBASE computerized databases from database inception to June 2023 in accordance with the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Included studies evaluated clinical outcomes, postoperative complications, and reoperation rates following tuberoplasty for the treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Exclusion criteria consisted of non-English language, cadaveric studies, case reports, animal studies, studies with overlapping cohorts, letters to editors, and review articles. Study quality was assessed using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies criteria. Clinical outcome scores included the visual analog scale for pain, University of California Los Angeles score, and Constant score. RESULTS Seven studies from 2002 to 2023 consisting of 123 patients with a mean age of 66.5 years (mean range, 63-70.4 years) were included. The mean follow-up time ranged from 18 to 98 months. The mean Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies score was 13.5 (range, 13-15). At final follow-up, the mean postoperative visual analog scale pain scores ranged from 2.3 to 2.5, University of California-Los Angeles shoulder score from 27.2 to 27.7, and Constant scores from 59.2 to 90.6. Postoperative active forward flexion and abduction ranged from 131° to 165°, and 123° to 160°, respectively. The change in acromiohumeral distance postoperatively ranged from -1 mm to -0.6 mm. The rate of postoperative complications ranged from 0% to 19% of patients, while 0% to 19% of patients underwent revision surgery to reverse shoulder arthroplasty. CONCLUSIONS Tuberoplasty for the treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears results in good clinical outcomes with significant pain relief in select populations. However, the variable reoperation rates should be considered when counseling patients. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV, systematic review of Level IV studies.

Abstract
4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is considered a priority organic pollutant with high toxicity. Many authors have been committed to developing efficient, green, and environmentally friendly technological processes to treat wastewater containing 4-NP. Here, we investigated how the addition of Ca2+ affects the catalytic degradation of 4-NP with AgInS2 when exposed to light. We synthesized AgInS2 (AIS) and Ca2+-doped AgInS2 (Ca-AIS) with varying amounts of Ca2+ using a low-temperature liquid phase method. The SEM, XRD, XPS, HRTEM, BET, PL, and UV-Vis DRS characteristics were employed to analyze the structure, morphology, and optical properties of the materials. The effects of different amounts of Ca2+ on the photocatalytic degradation of 4-NP were investigated. Under visible light illumination for a duration of 120 min, a degradation rate of 63.2% for 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) was achieved. The results showed that doping with an appropriate amount of Ca2+ could improve the visible light catalytic activity of AIS. This work provides an idea for finding suitable cheap alkaline earth metal doping agents to replace precious metals for the improvement of photocatalytic activities.

Abstract
In this study, a simple, rapid and sensitive method was developed for the simultaneous determination of chlormequat, fosetyl-aluminium and phosphonic acid residues in maize and soybean using liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Analytes were extracted with acetic acid solution, purified on an HLB column, and then filtered through a 0.2 μm hydrophilic microporous filter membrane. They were then separated on an IC column using a separation phase consisting of polyvinyl alcohol particles with quaternary ammonium groups. The mobile phase optimised with water was denoted as mobile phase A and that optimised with 200 mmol L-1 ammonium bicarbonate solution containing 0.05% ammonium hydroxide was denoted as mobile phase B. The residues were detected by tandem mass spectrometry with negative electrospray ionization in a multi-reaction monitoring mode. The correlation coefficient (R ≥ 0.997) showed good linear regressions for all analytes in water as well as in maize and soybean matrices with a wide dynamic range of 0.001 to 0.5 mg L-1 for calibration. The mean recoveries (RSDs) of the analytes were in the range 85.0-106.4% (5.5-14.9%), 81.7-109.5% (2.7-11.0%) and 74.7-104.4% (2.9-6.1%) at three concentration levels (0.05, 0.1 and 1 mg kg-1) for the interday test (n = 15). The limit of quantification (LOQ) and detection (LOD) of the method for different matrices were 0.01 and 0.003 mg kg-1, respectively. In conclusion, the established analytical approach has high sensitivity and good accuracy and precision and is suitable for monitoring chlormequat, fosetyl-aluminium and phosphonic acid residues in maize and soybean.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus is a prevalent metabolic disease that can impact the normal course of pregnancy and delivery, leading to adverse outcomes for both mother and child. Its pathogenesis is complex and involves various factors, such as insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Metabolic reprogramming, which involves mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis, is crucial for maintaining human metabolic balance and is involved in the pathogenesis and progression of gestational diabetes mellitus. However, research on the link and metabolic pathways between metabolic reprogramming and gestational diabetes mellitus is limited. Therefore, we reviewed the relationship between metabolic reprogramming and gestational diabetes mellitus to provide new therapeutic strategies for maternal health during pregnancy and reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Purpose To elucidate the influence of dopamine receptor 1 (DRD1) on the proliferation of mouse corneal epithelial cells (MCECs) under inflammatory conditions. Methods In vitro, immortalized MCECs (iMCECs) were treated with IL-1β, with and without pcDNA3.1_DRD1. Primary MCECs (pMCECs) were exposed to IL-1β, with and without DRD1 agonist (A68930). Cell proliferation was quantified using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and immunofluorescence staining for Ki-67 and p63. Expression levels of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), IL-1β, and IL-6 were assessed. To establish a corneal injury model in mice, a 2-mm superficial keratectomy was performed. Either 0.1% A68930 or PBS was topically administered three times daily to the injured eyes for up to 5 days post-injury. Immunofluorescence analysis was employed to evaluate the expression of Ki-67, p63, and CD45 in mouse corneas. Western blotting and real-time quantitative PCR were utilized for quantitative analysis of DRD1, NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-6 in mouse corneas. Corneal epithelial regeneration was monitored through fluorescein sodium staining for a duration of up to 5 days following the injury. Results Overexpression of DRD1 and A68930 promoted MCEC proliferation and suppressed the expression of NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-6 in vitro. Topical application of the 0.1% A68930 following mechanical corneal injury in mice led to increased Ki-67 and p63 expression compared to PBS treatment. Furthermore, topical administration of the 0.1% A68930 reduced the expression of CD45, NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-6. Analysis with fluorescein sodium indicated accelerated corneal epithelial regeneration in the 0.1% A68930 treatment group. Conclusions DRD1 treatment counteracts NLRP3-associated inflammation and facilitates epithelial repair of corneal injury.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Meta-analysis. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to summarize the clinical efficacy and safety of the various annular defect repair methods that have emerged in recent years. METHODS A meta-analysis of randomized and non-randomized controlled trials was conducted. Articles from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) on Lumbar disc herniation treatment with annular repair published from inception to April 2, 2022 were included. We summarized the clinical efficacy and safety of annular repair techniques based on a random-effects model meta-analysis. RESULTS 7 randomized controlled studies and 8 observational studies with a total of 2161 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled data analysis showed that adding the annular repair technique reduced postoperative recurrence rate, reoperation rate, and loss of intervertebral height compared with lumbar discectomy alone. Subgroup analysis based on different annular repair techniques showed that the Barricaid Annular Closure Device (ACD) was effective in preventing re-protrusion and reducing reoperation rates, while there was no significant difference between the other subgroups. The annulus fibrosus suture (AFS) did not improve the postoperative Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). No statistically significant difference was observed in the incidence of adverse events between the annular repair and control groups. CONCLUSIONS Lumbar discectomy combined with ACD can effectively reduce postoperative recurrence and reoperation rates in patients with LDH. AFS alone was less effective in reducing recurrence and reoperation rates and did not improve postoperative pain and function.

Abstract
Adding dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) to vascular endothelial cell-formed vessel-like structures can increase the longevity of these vessel networks. DPSCs display pericyte-like cell functions and closely assemble endothelial cells (ECs). However, the mechanisms of DPSC-derived pericyte-like cells in stabilizing the vessel networks are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the functions of E-DPSCs, which were DPSCs isolated from the direct coculture of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and DPSCs, and T-DPSCs, which were DPSCs treated by transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), in stabilizing blood vessels in vitro and in vivo. A 3-dimensional coculture spheroid sprouting assay was conducted to compare the functions of E-DPSCs and T-DPSCs in vitro. Dental pulp angiogenesis in the severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mouse model was used to explore the roles of E-DPSCs and T-DPSCs in vascularization in vivo. The results demonstrated that both E-DPSCs and T-DPSCs possess smooth muscle cell-like cell properties, exhibiting higher expression of the mural cell-specific markers and the suppression of HUVEC sprouting. E-DPSCs and T-DPSCs inhibited HUVEC sprouting by activating TEK tyrosine kinase (Tie2) signaling, upregulating vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin, and downregulating vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2). In vivo study revealed more perfused and total blood vessels in the HUVEC + E-DPSC group, HUVEC + T-DPSC group, angiopoietin 1 (Ang1) pretreated group, and vascular endothelial protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP) inhibitor pretreated group, compared to HUVEC + DPSC group. In conclusion, these data indicated that E-DPSCs and T-DPSCs could stabilize the newly formed blood vessels and accelerate their perfusion. The critical regulating pathways are Ang1/Tie2/VE-cadherin and VEGF/VEGFR2 signaling.

Abstract
Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a serious condition that manifests as low back pain, intervertebral disc protrusion, and spinal canal stenosis. At present, the main treatment methods for IVDD are surgical interventions such as discectomy, total disc replacement, and spinal fusion. However, these interventions have shown limitations, such as recurrent lumbar disc herniation after discectomy, lesions in adjacent segments, and failure of fixation. To overcome these shortcomings, researchers have been exploring stem cell transplantation therapy, such as mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation, but the treatment results are still controversial. Therefore, researchers are in search of new methods that are more efficient and have better outcomes. The exosomes from stem cells contain a variety of bioactive molecules that mediate cell interactions, and these components have been investigated for their potential therapeutic role in the repair of various tissue injuries. Recent studies have shown that MSC-derived miRNAs in exosomes and vesicles have therapeutic effects on nucleus pulposus cells, annulus fibrosus, and cartilage endplate. miRNAs play a role in many cell activities, such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cytokine release, by acting on mRNA translation, and they may have immense therapeutic potential, especially when combined with stem cell therapy. This article reviews the current status of research on intervertebral disc repair, especially with regard to the latest research findings on the molecular biological mechanisms of miRNAs in MSC-derived exosomes in intervertebral disc repair.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a multifactorial heterogeneous disease and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women; its diagnosis and treatment require clinical sensitivity and a comprehensive disciplinary research approach. The expression of different receptors on tumor cells not only provides the basis for molecular typing of breast cancer but also has a decisive role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of breast cancer. To date, immunohistochemistry (IHC), which uses invasive histological sampling, has been extensively used in clinical practice to analyze the status of receptors and to make an accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. As an invasive assay, IHC can provide important biological information on tumors at a single point in time, but cannot predict future changes (due to treatment or tumor mutations) without additional invasive procedures. These issues highlight the need to develop a non-invasive method for predicting receptor status. The emerging field of radiomics may offer a non-invasive approach to identification of receptor status without requiring biopsy. In this paper, we present a review of the latest research results in radiomics for predicting the status of breast cancer receptors, with potential important clinical applications.

Abstract
AIMS Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) may be associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications; however, the findings remain controversial. We aimed to synthesize the available data to assess the diagnostic utility of lncRNAs for identification of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its consequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for articles published from September 11, 2015 to December 27, 2022. We evaluated human case-control or cohort studies on differential lncRNA expression in type 2 diabetes mellitus or its associated comorbidities. We excluded studies if they were non-peer reviewed or published in languages other than English. From 2387 identified studies, we included 17 (4685 participants). RESULTS Analysis of the pooled data showed that lncRNAs had a diagnostic area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.80-0.87), with a sensitivity of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.74-0.83) and a specificity of 0.75 (95% CI: 0.69-0.80). LncRNAs had an AUC of 0.65 for the diagnosis of prediabetes, with 82% sensitivity and 65% specificity. CONCLUSIONS LncRNAs may be promising diagnostic markers for type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications.

Abstract
Background and objective Predicting mortality from traumatic brain injury facilitates early data-driven treatment decisions. Machine learning has predicted mortality from traumatic brain injury in a growing number of studies, and the aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of machine learning models in predicting mortality from traumatic brain injury. Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis included searches of PubMed, Web of Science and Embase from inception to June 2023, supplemented by manual searches of study references and review articles. Data were analyzed using Stata 16.0 software. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD2023440875). Results A total of 14 studies were included. The studies showed significant differences in the overall sample, model type and model validation. Predictive models performed well with a pooled AUC of 0.90 (95% CI: 0.87 to 0.92). Conclusion Overall, this study highlights the excellent predictive capabilities of machine learning models in determining mortality following traumatic brain injury. However, it is important to note that the optimal machine learning modeling approach has not yet been identified. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure the burden of hepatitis C-associated diseases in China from 1990 to 2019, and to predict its changes from 2020 to 2044, so as to provide insights into formulation of the targeted hepatitis C control strategy. METHODS The total burden due to hepatitis C-associated diseases in China from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019) data resources, and the trends in age-standardized prevalence, incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate of hepatitis C-associated acute hepatitis C (AHC), chronic liver diseases (CLD) and liver cancer in China from 1990 to 2019 were evaluated in China from 1990 to 2019 using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). In addition, the changes in the burden of hepatitis C-associated diseases were predicted in China from 2020 to 2044 using a Bayesian model. RESULTS The prevalence, incidence, mortality and DALY rate of hepatitis C-associated diseases all appeared an overall tendency towards a decline in China from 1990 to 2019 (EAPC = -2.64%, -2.24%, -3.81% and -3.90%, respectively); however, there was a minor rise in the incidence and prevalence of hepatitis C-associated diseases from 2015 to 2019. The overall prevalence of hepatitis C-associated diseases reduced from 2 152.7/105 in 1990 to 1 254.1/105 in 2019 in China, with a reduction of 41.7%. The overall incidence reduced from 87.9/105 in 1990 to 55.0/105 in 2019 in China, with a reduction of 37.4%, and the highest incidence was seen for AHC, followed by CLD and liver cancer. The overall mortality and DALY rate of hepatitis C-associated diseases was 4.0/105 and 100.8/105 in China from 1990 to 2019, with CLD showing the largest contributions to the gross mortality and DALY. The mortality and DALY rate of hepatitis C-associated diseases were 5.5/105 and 142.4/105 among men in China in 2019, which were both much higher than among women (2.8/105 and 60.3/105, respectively), and the overall prevalence (1 604.9/105), mortality (30.2/105) and DALYs (437.1/105) of hepatitis C-associated diseases were all highest among patients at ages of 70 years and older, and the highest incidence was seen among patients at ages of 0 to 9 years (167.3/105). The incidence of hepatitis C-associated diseases was predicted to rise in China from 2020 to 2044; however, the DALY rate was projected to appear a tendency towards a decline. CONCLUSIONS Although the burden of hepatitis C-associated diseases showed a tendency towards a decline in China from 1990 to 2019, the burden remained high, and was predicted to slightly rise from 2020 to 2044. High attention should be paid to screening of hepatitis C among infants and treatment among adults.

Abstract
Background Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) results from serious complications of intrauterine surgery or infection and mostly remains incurable. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a potential new approach for the treatment of IUA; however, their impact is not fully understood. Here, we performed a meta-analysis summarizing the effects of sEVs on IUA in preclinical rodent models. Methods This meta-analysis included searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and the Web of Science databases from January 1, 1997, to April 1, 2022, to identify studies reporting the therapeutic effect of sEVs on rodent preclinical animal models of IUA. We compared improvements in endometrial thickness, endometrial gland number, fibrosis area, embryo number, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1), and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) levels after treatment. Results Our search included 100 citations, of which 7 met the inclusion criteria, representing 231 animals. Compared with that in the control group, the fibrosis area in the sEV-treated group was significantly reduced (standardized mean difference (SMD) = -6.87,95 % confidence interval (CI) = -9.67 to -4.07). The number of glands increased after the intervention (95 % CI, 3.72-7.68; P = 0.000). Endometrial thickness was significantly improved in the sEV-treated group (SMD = 2.57, 95 % CI, 1.62-3.52). Conclusions This meta-analysis is highlighting that sEV treatment can improve the area of endometrial fibrosis, as well as VEGF, and LIF level, in a mouse IUA model. This knowledge of these findings will provide new insights into future preclinical research.

Abstract
Surgical resection is the main treatment for proximal gastric cancer, but there is no consensus on its reconstruction. We carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of double-tract reconstruction (DTR) and double-flap technique (DFT) on postoperative quality of life in patients with proximal gastric cancer. Systematic searches of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and the Cochrane Library were performed. Literature for the last 5 years was searched without language restrictions. The cutoff date for the search was 12 April 2023. Literature and research searches were conducted independently by two researchers and data were extracted. Statistical analyses were performed using Review Manager (Revman) 5.4 software. Fixed models were used when heterogeneity was small and random-effects models were used for meta-analysis when heterogeneity was large. The study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD 42023418520. Surgical time was significantly shorter in the DTR group than in the DFT group (P = 0.03). There were no significant differences between DFT and DTR in terms of age, gender, pathological stage, preoperative body mass index, surgical bleeding, and perioperative complications. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of reflux esophagitis and PPI intake, but DFT was superior to DTR in weight improvement at 1 year after surgery (P < 0.0001). Compared with DTR, DFT reconstruction is more demanding and time-consuming, but its postoperative nutritional status is better, so it should be the first choice for GI reconstruction in most patients with early proximal gastric cancer. However, DTR should be the best choice for patients who have difficulty operating.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure the burden of hepatitis B-associated diseases in China from 1990 to 2019, and to predict its changes from 2020 to 2030. METHODS The age-standardized prevalence, incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rate of hepatitis B-associated diseases in China from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019) data resources, and the trends in burdens of hepatitis B-associated diseases were evaluated from 1990 to 2019 using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) and annual percent change (APC). In addition, the changes in the burden of hepatitis B-associated diseases were predicted in China from 2020 to 2023 using the Bayesian model. RESULTS The overall incidence of hepatitis B-associated diseases reduced from 2 725.98/105 in 1990 to 1 397.31/105 in 2019 in China [estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) = -2.35%, 95% confidential interval (CI): (-2.58%, -2.13%)], with a reduction in the prevalence from 12 239.53/105 in 1990 to 6 566.12/105 in 2019 [EAPC = -2.34%, 95% CI: (-2.54%, -2.14%)], a reduction in the mortality from 24.67/105 in 1990 to 8.07/105 in 2019 [EAPC = -4.92%, 95% CI: (-5.37%, -4.47%)], and a reduction in the DALY rate from 793.38/105 in 1990 to 247.71/105 in 2019 [(EAPC = -5.15%, 95% CI: (-5.64%, -4.66%)]. The DALY rate of hepatitis B-associated diseases were mainly attributed to liver cancer, and the DALY rate of hepatitis B-associated diseases appeared a tendency towards a rise in China from 2012 to 2019 [APC = 1.30%, 95% CI: (0.16%, 2.45%)]. The overall burden of hepatitis Bassociated diseases was higher in males than in females, and the DALY rate of hepatitis B-associated diseases increased with age, with the greatest DALY rate seen among patients at ages of 50 to 69 years. The overall incidence of hepatitis B-associated diseases was projected to be 866.79/105 in China in 2030, with the greatest incidence seen in acute hepatitis B (854.87/105), and the burden of hepatitis B-associated diseases was predicted to decline in China from 2020 to 2030; however, the burden of liver disease was projected to appear a tendency towards a rise. CONCLUSIONS The burden of hepatitis B-associated diseases appears an overall tendency towards a decline in China from 1990 to 2030; however, the burden of liver cancer appears a tendency towards aggravation. Early diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer should be given a high priority.

Abstract
Stem cells have self-renewal, replication, and multidirectional differentiation potential, while progenitor cells are undifferentiated, pluripotent or specialized stem cells. Stem/progenitor cells secrete various factors, such as cytokines, exosomes, non-coding RNAs, and proteins, and have a wide range of applications in regenerative medicine. However, therapies based on stem cells and their secreted exosomes present limitations, such as insufficient source materials, mature differentiation, and low transplantation success rates, and methods addressing these problems are urgently required. Ultrasound is gaining increasing attention as an emerging technology. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has mechanical, thermal, and cavitation effects and produces vibrational stimuli that can lead to a series of biochemical changes in organs, tissues, and cells, such as the release of extracellular bodies, cytokines, and other signals. These changes can alter the cellular microenvironment and affect biological behaviors, such as cell differentiation and proliferation. Here, we discuss the effects of LIPUS on the biological functions of stem/progenitor cells, exosomes, and non-coding RNAs, alterations involved in related pathways, various emerging applications, and future perspectives. We review the roles and mechanisms of LIPUS in stem/progenitor cells and exosomes with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of LIPUS and promoting research and development in this field.

Abstract
Despite efforts to diagnose diabetic nephropathy (DN) using biochemical data or ultrasound imaging separately, a significant gap exists regarding the development of integrated models combining both modalities for enhanced early DN diagnosis. Therefore, we aimed to assess the ability of machine learning models containing two-dimensional ultrasound imaging and biochemical data to diagnose early DN in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This retrospective study included 219 patients, divided into a training or test group at an 8:2 ratio. Features were selected using minimum redundancy maximum relevance and random forest-recursive feature elimination. The predictive performance of the models was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for sensitivity, specificity, Matthews Correlation Coefficient, F1 score, and accuracy. K-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, and logistic regression models could diagnose early DN, with AUC values of 0.94, 0.85, and 0.85 in the training cohort and 0.91, 0.84, and 0.84 in the test cohort, respectively. Early DN diagnosing using two-dimensional ultrasound-based radiomics models can potentially revolutionize T2DM patient care by enabling proactive interventions, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Our integrated approach showcases the power of artificial intelligence in medical imaging, enhancing early disease detection strategies with far-reaching applications across medical disciplines.

Abstract
Due to the unique anatomical structure and physiological barriers of the eye, drug delivery for ocular diseases presents a formidable challenge. Conventional methods of ocular drug administration often suffer from limitations such as low drug bioavailability and a lack of tissue targeting, necessitating multiple administrations to achieve the desired therapeutic drug concentrations. In recent years, microneedles, known for their attributes of safety, minimally invasive application, and high efficiency, have found widespread application in ocular drug delivery research. Among the various types of microneedles, dissolving polymer microneedles have emerged as a prominent focus in the field of ocular drug delivery due to their distinct advantages over other microneedle types. This article provides a comprehensive summary and outlook on the progress in the application of dissolving polymer microneedles for drug delivery in ocular diseases.

Abstract
The latest clinical trials have reported conflicting outcomes regarding the effectiveness of xenon anesthesia in preventing postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction; thus, this study assessed the existing evidence. We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from inception to April 9, 2023, for randomized controlled trials of xenon anesthesia in postoperative patients. We included English-language randomized controlled studies of adult patients undergoing surgery with xenon anesthesia that compared its effects to those of other anesthetics. Duplicate studies, pediatric studies, and ongoing clinical trials were excluded. Nine studies with 754 participants were identified. A forest plot revealed that the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction did not differ between the xenon anesthesia and control groups (P = 0.43). Additionally, xenon anesthesia significantly shortened the emergence time for time to opening eyes (P < 0.001), time to extubation (P < 0.001), time to react on demand (P = 0.01), and time to time and spatial orientation (P = 0.04). However, the Aldrete score significantly increased with xenon anesthesia (P = 0.005). Postoperative complications did not differ between the anesthesia groups. Egger's test for bias showed no small-study effect, and a trim-and-fill analysis showed no apparent publication bias. In conclusion, xenon anesthesia probably did not affect the occurrence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction. However, xenon anesthesia may effectively shorten the emergence time of certain parameters without adverse effects.

Abstract
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative parkinsonian disorder characterized by cell-type-specific tau lesions in neurons and glia. Prior work uncovered transcriptome changes in human PSP brains, although their cell-specificity is unknown. Further, systematic data integration and experimental validation platforms to prioritize brain transcriptional perturbations as therapeutic targets in PSP are currently lacking. In this study, we combine bulk tissue (n = 408) and single nucleus RNAseq (n = 34) data from PSP and control brains with transcriptome data from a mouse tauopathy and experimental validations in Drosophila tau models for systematic discovery of high-confidence expression changes in PSP with therapeutic potential. We discover, replicate, and annotate thousands of differentially expressed genes in PSP, many of which reside in glia-enriched co-expression modules and cells. We prioritize DDR2, STOM, and KANK2 as promising therapeutic targets in PSP with striking cross-species validations. We share our findings and data via our interactive application tool PSP RNAseq Atlas ( https://rtools.mayo.edu/PSP_RNAseq_Atlas/ ). Our findings reveal robust glial transcriptome changes in PSP, provide a cross-species systems biology approach, and a tool for therapeutic target discoveries in PSP with potential application in other neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Methionine is indispensable for growth and meat formation in pigs. However, it is still unclear that increasing dietary sulphur-containing amino acid (SAA) levels using different methionine sources affects the growth performance and meat quality of barrows and gilts. To investigate this, 144 pigs (half barrows and half gilts) were fed the control (100% SAA, CON), DL-Methionine (125% SAA, DL-Met)-supplemented, or OH-Methionine (125% SAA, OH-Met)-supplemented diets during the 11-110 kg period. The results showed that plasma methionine levels varied among treatments during the experimental phase, with increased plasma methionine levels observed following increased SAA consumption during the 25-45 kg period. In contrast, pigs fed the DL-Met diet had lower plasma methionine levels than those fed the CON diet (95-110 kg). Additionally, gilts fed the DL-Met or OH-Met diets showed decreased drip loss in longissimus lumborum muscle (LM) compared to CON-fed gilts. OH-Met-fed gilts had higher pH45min values than those fed the CON or DL-Met diets, whereas OH-Met-fed barrows had higher L45min values than those fed the CON or DL-Met diets. Moreover, increased consumption of SAA, regardless of the methionine source, tended to decrease the shear force of the LM in pigs. In conclusion, this study indicates that increasing dietary levels of SAA (+25%) appeared to improve the meat quality of gilts by decreasing drip loss and increasing meat tenderness.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most widespread neurodegenerative diseases. PD is associated with progressive loss of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons, including various motor symptoms (e.g., bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., cognitive impairment, constipation, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression). PD involves multiple biological processes, including mitochondrial or lysosomal dysfunction, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and neuroinflammation. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a collection of numerous connected cerebral cardiovascular conditions, is a common and growing public health problem associated with many chronic diseases worldwide. MetS components include central/abdominal obesity, systemic hypertension, diabetes, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. MetS and PD share multiple pathophysiological processes, including insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. In recent years, MetS has been linked to an increased risk of PD, according to studies; however, the specific mechanism remains unclear. Researchers also found that some related metabolic therapies are potential therapeutic strategies to prevent and improve PD. This article reviews the epidemiological relationship between components of MetS and the risk of PD and discusses the potentially relevant mechanisms and recent progress of MetS as a risk factor for PD. Furthermore, we conclude that MetS-related therapies are beneficial for the prevention and treatment of PD.

Abstract
The functional restoration of Brown class III maxillary defects is a challenging endeavour in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Conventional reconstruction techniques with osseous free flaps have certain limitations, such as the need for multiple operations and greater patient morbidity. This study introduces a single-stage computer-assisted approach for tumour resection and functional restoration of these defects using titanium mesh, zygomatic implants, and a vascularized anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF). Virtual surgical planning was used to simulate tumour resection, titanium mesh placement, and zygomatic implant insertion. Surgery was performed under the guidance of mixed reality and surgical navigation. The tumour was resected by total hemimaxillectomy, and the reconstruction was performed using a pre-bent patient-specific titanium mesh for the orbital floor and two zygomatic implants placed and exposed through tunnels in an ALTF. The ALTF survived without any perioperative complications. A fixed prosthesis with built-in titanium frame was delivered 4 months postoperatively. At the 1-year follow-up, there was no tumour recurrence, the implants were osseointegrated, and aesthetics and masticatory function were satisfactory. An occlusal force of 155 N was attained on the reconstructed side, compared to 127 N on the non-surgical side.

Abstract
A rapid and sensitive method that combined ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (UHPLC-FT-ICR-MS) was used to identify the chemical constituents in Lanqin oral liquid. On the basis of UHPLC-FT-ICR-MS analysis, systematic characterization of the chemical profile of Lanqin oral liquid was carried out, and a total of 441 compounds were identified or tentatively characterized including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, organic acids, phenylpropanoids, and other types. The results provide a reference for improving quality control, contribute to establishing higher quality standards, provide a scientific basis for further research on the pharmacodynamic material basis, and help illustrate the relationship between the complicated constituents and therapeutic effects of Lanqin oral liquid.
