Abstract
Assessing the scope and severity of threats is necessary for evaluating impacts on populations to inform conservation planning. Quantitative threat assessment often requires monitoring programs that provide reliable data over relevant spatial and temporal scales, yet such programs can be difficult to justify until there is an apparent stressor. Leveraging efforts of wildlife management agencies to record winter counts of hibernating bats, we collated data for 5 species from over 200 sites across 27 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces from 1995 to 2018 to determine the impact of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a deadly disease of hibernating bats. We estimated declines of winter counts of bat colonies at sites where the invasive fungus that causes WNS (Pseudogymnoascus destructans) had been detected to assess the threat impact of WNS. Three species undergoing species status assessment by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Myotis septentrionalis, Myotis lucifugus, and Perimyotis subflavus) declined by more than 90%, which warrants classifying the severity of the WNS threat as extreme based on criteria used by NatureServe. The scope of the WNS threat as defined by NatureServe criteria was large (36% of Myotis lucifugus range) to pervasive (79% of Myotis septentrionalis range) for these species. Declines for 2 other species (Myotis sodalis and Eptesicus fuscus) were less severe but still qualified as moderate to serious based on NatureServe criteria. Data-sharing across jurisdictions provided a comprehensive evaluation of scope and severity of the threat of WNS and indicated regional differences that can inform response efforts at international, national, and state or provincial jurisdictions. We assessed the threat impact of an emerging infectious disease by uniting monitoring efforts across jurisdictional boundaries and demonstrated the importance of coordinated monitoring programs, such as the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), for data-driven conservation assessments and planning.

Abstract
Although oxidative stress is known to impede the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, the nutritionally-versatile microbe, Pseudomonas fluorescens has been shown to proliferate in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitrosative stress. In this study we demonstrate the phospho-transfer system that enables this organism to generate ATP was similar irrespective of the carbon source utilized. Despite the diminished activities of enzymes involved in the TCA cycle and in the electron transport chain (ETC), the ATP levels did not appear to be significantly affected in the stressed cells. Phospho-transfer networks mediated by acetate kinase (ACK), adenylate kinase (AK), and nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) are involved in maintaining ATP homeostasis in the oxidatively-challenged cells. This phospho-relay machinery orchestrated by substrate-level phosphorylation is aided by the up-regulation in the activities of such enzymes like phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK), and phosphoenolpyruvate synthase (PEPS). The enhanced production of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and pyruvate further fuel the synthesis of ATP. Taken together, this metabolic reconfiguration enables the organism to fulfill its ATP need in an O2-independent manner by utilizing an intricate phospho-wire module aimed at maximizing the energy potential of PEP with the participation of AMP.

Abstract
The brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in the body. It has evolved intricate metabolic networks to fulfill this need and utilizes a variety of substrates to generate ATP, the universal energy currency. Any disruption in the supply of energy results in various abnormalities including Alzheimer's disease (AD), a condition with markedly diminished cognitive ability. Astrocytes are an important participant in maintaining the cerebral ATP budget. However, under oxidative stress induced by numerous factors including aluminum toxicity, the ability of astroctyes to generate ATP is impaired due to dysfunctional mitochondria. This leads to globular, glycolytic, lipogenic and ATP-deficient astrocytes, cerebral characteristics common in AD patients. The reversal of these perturbations by such natural metabolites as pyruvate, α-ketoglutarate, acetoacetate and L-carnitine provides valuable therapeutic cues against AD.

Abstract
To reduce the negative effect of climate change on Biodiversity, the use of geological CO2 sequestration has been proposed; however leakage from underwater storages may represent a risk to marine life. As extracellular homeostasis is important in determining species' ability to cope with elevated CO2, we investigated the acid-base and ion regulatory responses, as well as the density, of sea urchins living around CO2 vents at Vulcano, Italy. We conducted in situ transplantation and field-based laboratory exposures to different pCO2/pH regimes. Our results confirm that sea urchins have some ability to regulate their extracellular fluid under elevated pCO2. Furthermore, we show that even in closely-related taxa divergent physiological capabilities underlie differences in taxa distribution around the CO2 vent. It is concluded that species distribution under the sort of elevated CO2 conditions occurring with leakages from geological storages and future ocean acidification scenarios, may partly be determined by quite subtle physiological differentiation.

Abstract
Extensive use of torpor is a common winter survival strategy among bats; however, data comparing various torpor behaviors among species are scarce. Winter torpor behaviors are likely to vary among species with different physiologies and species inhabiting different regional climates. Understanding these differences may be important in identifying differing susceptibilities of species to white-nose syndrome (WNS) in North America. We fitted 24 Rafinesque’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) with temperature-sensitive radio-transmitters, and monitored 128 PIT-tagged big-eared bats, during the winter months of 2010 to 2012. We tested the hypothesis that Rafinesque’s big-eared bats use torpor less often than values reported for other North American cave-hibernators. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis that Rafinesque’s big-eared bats arouse on winter nights more suitable for nocturnal foraging. Radio-tagged bats used short (2.4 d ± 0.3 (SE)), shallow (13.9°C ± 0.6) torpor bouts and switched roosts every 4.1 d ± 0.6. Probability of arousal from torpor increased linearly with ambient temperature at sunset (P<0.0001), and 83% (n = 86) of arousals occurred within 1 hr of sunset. Activity of PIT-tagged bats at an artificial maternity/hibernaculum roost between November and March was positively correlated with ambient temperature at sunset (P<0.0001), with males more active at the roost than females. These data show Rafinesque’s big-eared bat is a shallow hibernator and is relatively active during winter. We hypothesize that winter activity patterns provide Corynorhinus species with an ecological and physiological defense against the fungus causing WNS, and that these bats may be better suited to withstand fungal infection than other cave-hibernating bat species in eastern North America.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has a broad role in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism making it a promising target in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. We therefore sought to characterise for the first time the effects of chronic AMPK activation on skeletal muscle carbohydrate metabolism in carriers of the rare gain-of-function mutation of the gene encoding AMPKgamma(3) subunit, PRKAG3 R225W. METHODS Aspects of fuel metabolism were studied in vitro in myocytes isolated from vastus lateralis of PRKAG3 R225W carriers and matched control participants. In vivo, muscular strength and fatigue were evaluated by isokinetic dynamometer and surface electromyography, respectively. Glucose uptake in exercising quadriceps was determined using [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography. RESULTS Myotubes from PRKAG3 R225W carriers had threefold higher mitochondrial content (p < 0.01) and oxidative capacity, higher leak-dependent respiration (1.6-fold, p < 0.05), higher basal glucose uptake (twofold, p < 0.01) and higher glycogen synthesis rates (twofold, p < 0.05) than control myotubes. They also had higher levels of intracellular glycogen (p < 0.01) and a trend for lower intramuscular triacylglycerol stores. R225W carriers showed remarkable resistance to muscular fatigue and a trend for increased glucose uptake in exercising muscle in vivo. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Through the enhancement of skeletal muscle glucose uptake and increased mitochondrial content, the R225W mutation may significantly enhance exercise performance. These findings are also consistent with the hypothesis that the gamma(3) subunit of AMPK is a promising tissue-specific target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition in which glucose uptake and mitochondrial function are impaired.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The cytological examination of pleural effusions is an important investigation in the diagnosis of malignancy. Maximizing the chances of identifying malignant effusions is therefore desirable. Recent Royal College of Pathologists guidelines, based on the British Society for Clinical Cytology codes of practice, have suggested that a minimum of 20 ml of pleural fluid is required for diagnostic purposes. METHODS & RESULTS We examined 2155 pleural fluids received over a 6-year period in order to define a minimum required volume for adequacy. By examining the plateau phase of a graph of threshold volumes for initial samples received for each patient (n =1584) we determine that a minimum fluid volume of 25 ml is required and that more than 50 ml does not improve sensitivity. CONCLUSION Between 25 and 50 ml of fluid are required for the adequate assessment of pleural effusions for malignancy.

Abstract
Population-based data from the Cardiff Births Survey has been used to examine the trends in obstetric intervention with increasing maternal age. As maternal age increases, spontaneous vaginal delivery rates fall, instrumental delivery rates, elective and emergency caesarean section, induction of labour and epidural rates rise. Induction of labour and epidural in labour are both associated with decreased spontaneous vaginal delivery rates and an increase in instrumental delivery rates and emergency caesarean section.

Abstract
Recently developed structural retention harvesting strategies aim to improve habitat and ecological services provided by managed forest stands by better emulating natural disturbances. The potential for elevated mortality of residual trees following such harvests remains a critical concern for forest managers, and may present a barrier to more widespread implementation of the approach. We used a harvest chronosequence combined with dendrochronological techniques and an individual-based neighborhood analysis to examine the rate and time course of residual-tree mortality in the first decade following operational partial "structural retention" harvests in the boreal forest of Ontario, Canada. In the first year after harvest, residual-tree mortality peaked at 12.6 times the preharvest rate. Subsequently, mortality declined rapidly and approached preharvest levels within 10 years. Proximity to skid trails was the most important predictor both of windthrow and standing death, which contributed roughly equally to total postharvest mortality. Local exposure further increased windthrow risk, while crowding enhanced the risk of standing mortality. Ten years after harvest, an average of 10.5% of residual trees had died as a result of elevated postharvest mortality. Predicted cumulative elevated mortality in the first decade after harvest ranged from 2.4% to 37% of residual trees across the observed gradient of skid trail proximity, indicating that postharvest mortality will remain at or below acceptable rates only if skidding impacts are minimized. These results represent an important step toward understanding how elevated mortality may influence stand dynamics and habitat supply following moderate-severity disturbances such as partial harvests, insect outbreaks, and windstorms.

Abstract
Although the native forests of China are exceptionally diverse, only a small number of tree species have been widely utilized in forest plantations and reforestation efforts. We used dendrochronological sampling methods to assess the potential growth and carbon sequestration of native tree species in Jilin Province, Northeast China. Trees were sampled in and near the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve, with samples encompassing old-growth, disturbed forest, and plantations. To approximate conditions for planted trees, sampling focused on trees with exposed crowns (dominant and co-dominant individuals). A log-linear relationship was found between diameter increment and tree diameter, with a linear decrease in increment with increasing local basal area; no significant differences in these patterns between plantations and natural stands were detected for two commonly planted species (Pinus koraiensis and Larix olgensis). A growth model that incorporates observed feedbacks with individual tree size and local basal area (in conjunction with allometric models for tree biomass), was used to project stand-level biomass increment. Predicted growth trajectories were then linked to the carbon process model InTEC to provide estimates of carbon sequestration potential. Results indicate substantial differences among species, and suggest that certain native hardwoods (in particular Fraxinus mandshurica and Phellodendron amurense), have high potential for use in carbon forestry applications. Increased use of native hardwoods in carbon forestry in China is likely to have additional benefits in terms of economic diversification and enhanced provision of "ecosystem services", including biodiversity protection.

Abstract
Data on the mass density and carbon content of tree organs, and in particular stem wood, are essential for accurate assessments of forest carbon sequestration. However most available data, including that for East Asia, has neglected the volatile C fraction. Wood samples were collected and assayed for C content from 14 native tree species in Jilin Province, NE China. C content showed statistically significant variation among species, ranging from 48.4% to 51.0%. The volatile C fraction was non-negligible, averaging 2.2%, and showed high variation among species. As found in prior studies, wood C content was appreciably higher in conifer than hardwood (angiosperm) species (50.8+/-0.1% vs. 49.5+/-0.2%, respectively). Wood carbon density (gC/cm(3)) showed very high inter-specific variation, due mainly to differences in wood specific gravity. Our analyses, in conjunction with recently published data from North America, indicate a global mean value of 47.5+/-0.5% wood C content exclusive of volatile C; the widely used 50% figure corresponds more closely to total wood C inclusive of the volatile fraction. Failure to include volatile C or to use species- or higher-taxon-specific C content values in forest C assessments is likely to introduce biases on the order approximately 4-6%. In addition, the stocks and flows of the volatile C fraction in wood are in themselves an important and sorely neglected aspect of forest C processes likely to be strongly impacted by harvests and other management practices.

Abstract
This article serves as an introduction to this special issue, "China's Forest Carbon Sequestration", representing major results of a project sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. China occupies a pivotal position globally as a principle emitter of carbon dioxide, as host to some of the world's largest reforestation efforts, and as a key player in international negotiations aimed at reducing global greenhouse gas emission. The goals of this project are to develop remote sensing approaches for quantifying forest carbon balance in China in a transparent manner, and information and tools to support land-use decisions for enhanced carbon sequestration (CS) that are science based and economically and socially viable. The project consists of three components: (i) remote sensing and carbon modeling, (ii) forest and soil assessment, and (iii) integrated assessment of the socio-economic implications of CS via forest management. Articles included in this special issue are highlights of the results of each of these components.

Abstract
A range of traits, including metabolic costs, biomass allocation and seed reserves, may contribute to interspecific variation in the shade tolerance of tree seedlings. In addition, shade tolerance may be affected by differential responses of species to soil resource availability at low light. We used a custom-built whole-plant gas-exchange chamber to quantify instantaneous whole-plant light compensation point (WPLCP) and to parameterize whole-plant daily C gain models for seedlings of eight temperate deciduous tree species. We examined the relationship of WPLCP to growth, biomass allocation and gas-exchange under high and low light and nutrient availabilities and compared it to WPCLP of naturally recruited saplings. For species showing a response, both increased light and nutrient availability resulted in increased WPLCP. However, species' responses to resource availability did not correspond closely with shade tolerance as has generally been predicted. Variation in WPLCP within species was best predicted by whole-plant dark respiration rates, leaf-level light compensation point and leaf mass per area. Among species, seed size was a strong negative correlate of WPLCP, explaining 66% of the variation. Species with the lowest WPLCP maintained lower growth rates across treatments but greater biomass in the low-light treatment compared with more light-demanding species. These data suggest that a number of traits, in particular metabolic costs and seed size, contribute to WPLCP. However, gas-exchange-based WPLCP was 1.5-3.5 times lower than corresponding growth-based field estimates of WPLCP, suggesting that other factors such as biotic interactions or ontogenetic shifts in whole-plant light requirements may substantially increase species' WPLCP under natural conditions.

Abstract
Leaf-level morphological and physiological responses of mature, winter-deciduous, shade-tolerant Acer saccharum Marsh. trees to gap formation caused by selection harvest were studied experimentally over a 2-year period. We found no evidence for either physiological stress or positive acclimation following gap creation during the 1-2-week post-harvest period. Rather, lower-canopy leaves showed gradual increases in area-based maximum photosynthetic rates (Amax-area), stomatal conductance (gs), and leaf nitrogen concentration (Narea) over the entire 2-year study. These acclimation responses were directly related to changes in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) in the subsequent two leaf flushes. No change in Amax-area, gs, Narea, or photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency was observed that could not be accounted for by changes in LMA. The gradual acclimation responses in the lower canopy may account, in whole or in part, for the approximately 2-year lag in post-harvest growth response observed in Acer saccharum.

Abstract
Leaf optical parameters influence light availability at the cellular, leaf, and canopy scale of integration. While recent studies have focused on leaf optical responses to acute plant stress, the effects of changes in plant resources on leaf optics remain poorly characterized. We examined leaf optical and anatomical responses of five temperate deciduous tree species to moderate changes in nutrient and light availability. Spectral reflectance in the visible waveband generally increased at high light, but decreased with increased nutrient availability. Patterns of both spectral reflectance and absorptance were primarily determined by chlorophyll concentration although carotenoid concentration was also influential. While most anatomical features did not explain residual variation in reflectance, cuticle thickness was significantly related to reflectance at complementary angles compared to the angle of incidence. Absorptance did not change with light environment; however, absorption efficiency per unit biomass increased by approximately 40% under low light, due to reduced leaf mass per area. We conclude that changes in resource availability differentially influence leaf optical properties and that such changes are driven primarily by changes in pigment concentrations. The magnitude of leaf optical responses to moderate changes in resource availability was comparable to those of acute stress responses and varied among species.

Abstract
Previous techniques for estimating quantitative genetic parameters, such as heritability in populations where exact relationships are unknown but are instead inferred from marker genotypes, have used data from individuals on a pairwise level only. At this level, families are weighted according to the number of pairs within which each family appears, hence by size rather than information content, and information from multiple relationships is lost. Estimates of parameters are therefore not the most efficient achievable. Here, Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques have been used to partition the population into complete sibships, including, if known, prior knowledge of the distribution of family sizes. These pedigrees have then been used with restricted maximum likelihood under an animal model to estimate quantitative genetic parameters. Simulations to compare the properties of parameter estimates with those of existing techniques indicate that the use of sibship reconstruction is superior to earlier methods, having lower mean square errors and showing nonsignificant downward bias. In addition, sibship reconstruction allows the estimation of population allele frequencies that account for the relationships within the sample, so prior knowledge of allele frequencies need not be assumed. Extensions to these techniques allow reconstruction of half sibships when some or all of the maternal genotypes are known.

Abstract
Until recently, the estimation of the heritability of a trait has required knowledge of the pedigree within a population. In natural populations such knowledge is often unknown. Two techniques have been developed which use marker information to estimate heritabilities without reference to the exact nature of the relationships: a regression-based estimator that regresses phenotypic similarity for a pair of individuals against an estimate of their relationship and a likelihood-based estimator that maximizes the probability of the genotypic and phenotypic data given a known population structure. Computer simulation was used to compare the behaviour of these estimators. Bias in estimates of heritability decreased with increasing marker information, decreasing simulated heritability, increasing relatedness and increasing sample size. The techniques displayed reasonable tolerance to the percentage of missing data. The regression-based technique shows least average bias, but largest variance over simulations. Likelihood-based techniques show larger average bias, but smaller variances over estimates. A modified form of the likelihood technique, requiring fewer initial assumptions about population parameters, is presented. The modified form shows less bias in its estimates of heritability than the likelihood technique originally proposed.

Abstract
I-kappaBalpha is an intracellular protein that functions as a primary inhibitor of the proinflammatory transcription factor NF-kappaB. Induction of the stress response with heat shock was previously demonstrated to induce I-kappaBalpha gene expression. Because the stress response can also be induced by nonthermal stimuli, we determined whether induction of the stress response with prostaglandin A1 (PGA1) would induce I-kappaBalpha gene expression. Treatment of human bronchial epithelium (BEAS-2B cells) with PGA1 induced nuclear translocation of heat shock factor 1, thus confirming that PGA1 induces the stress response in BEAS-2B cells. Induction of the stress response with PGA1 increased I-kappaBalpha mRNA expression in a time-dependent manner and increased I-kappaBalpha peptide expression. Transient transfection assays involving a human I-kappaBalpha promoter-luciferase reporter construct demonstrated that induction of the stress response with PGA1 activated the I-kappaBalpha promoter. Induction of the stress response with PGA1 and concomitant induction of I-kappaBalpha were associated with inhibition of TNF-alpha-mediated secretion of interleukin 8 and with inhibition of TNF-alpha-mediated nuclear translocation and activation of NF-kappaB. These data demonstrate that induction of the stress response, by a nonthermal stimulus, increases I-kappaBalpha gene expression by a mechanism involving activation of the I-kappaBalpha promoter. Coupled with previous data demonstrating heat shock-mediated induction of I-kappaBalpha gene expression, these data suggest that I-kappaBalpha may be considered to be one of the stress proteins. The functional consequences of stress response-mediated I-kappaBalpha gene expression may involve attenuation of cellular proinflammatory responses.

Abstract
Adequate sexual expression is an essential part of human relationships, enhancing quality of life and providing a sense of physical, psychological and social well-being. Unfortunately, depression is associated with impairments of sexual function and satisfaction. These problems can worsen a quality of life that is already reduced by the effects of depressive illness. The existing antidepressant drugs are far from ideal, most having adverse effects on sexual function. Unfortunately, the exact incidence of sexual dysfunction during treatment with many antidepressants is not known. Disturbances of sexual interest and performance will only be detected in a reliable fashion when systematic enquiries are made during the course of the standard clinical interview. Growing awareness of the adverse effects of many antidepressants on sexual function has led to some re-evaluation of the earlier claims for the good tolerability of many of the newer drugs. There is a clear need for further well-designed controlled studies of the effects of antidepressants on sexual function, so that this aspect of the tolerability of differing drugs can be assessed more reliably. Abstract
The binding of heparin or heparan sulphate to a variety of cell types results in specific changes in cell function. Endothelial cells treated with heparin alter their synthesis of heparan sulphate proteoglycans and extracellular matrix proteins. In order to identify a putative endothelial cell heparin receptor that could be involved in heparin signalling, anti-(endothelial cell) monoclonal antibodies that significantly inhibit heparin binding to endothelial cells were prepared. Four of these antibodies were employed in affinity-chromatographic isolation of a heparin-binding protein from detergent-solubilized endothelial cells. The heparin-binding protein isolated from porcine aortic endothelial cells using four different monoclonal antibodies has an M(r) of 45,000 assessed by SDS/PAGE. The 45,000-M(r) heparin-binding polypeptide is isolated as a multimer. The antibody-isolated protein binds to heparin-affinity columns as does the pure 45,000-M(r) polypeptide, consistent with its identification as a putative endothelial heparin receptor.

Abstract
Despite the critical role that terrestrial vegetation plays in the Earth's carbon cycle, very little is known about the potential evolutionary responses of plants to anthropogenically induced increases in concentrations of atmospheric CO2. We present experimental evidence that rising CO2 concentration may have a direct impact on the genetic composition and diversity of plant populations but is unlikely to result in selection favoring genotypes that exhibit increased productivity in a CO2-enriched atmosphere. Experimental populations of an annual plant (Abutilon theophrasti, velvetleaf) and a temperate forest tree (Betula alleghaniensis, yellow birch) displayed responses to increased CO2 that were both strongly density-dependent and genotype-specific. In competitive stands, a higher concentration of CO2 resulted in pronounced shifts in genetic composition, even though overall CO2-induced productivity enhancements were small. For the annual species, quantitative estimates of response to selection under competition were 3 times higher at the elevated CO2 level. However, genotypes that displayed the highest growth responses to CO2 when grown in the absence of competition did not have the highest fitness in competitive stands. We suggest that increased CO2 intensified interplant competition and that selection favored genotypes with a greater ability to compete for resources other than CO2. Thus, while increased CO2 may enhance rates of selection in populations of competing plants, it is unlikely to result in the evolution of increased CO2 responsiveness or to operate as an important feedback in the global carbon cycle. However, the increased intensity of selection and drift driven by rising CO2 levels may have an impact on the genetic diversity in plant populations.

Abstract
A recent advance in metallurgical technology has been the application of rapid solidification techniques to Al alloy production. FVS0812 is the designation given to a microcrystalline Al-based alloy consisting of 8 wt% Fe, 1 wt% V and 2 wt% Si. It is a two-phase alloy, consisting of ca. 27 vol percent of approximately spherical Fe-V-Si-rich dispersoids in an essentially pure Al matrix. The high strength, low density properties of this advanced material, and other related alloys, have not yet been realized, however, due, in part, to the inability of the alloy to form a thick, adherent, abrasion-resistant outer surface oxide film, a feature readily achieved at conventional Al alloys by normal anodizing methods. The present research has involved an electro-chemical study of oxide film growth at the 812 alloy, with the specific goals being to seek an understanding of the origin of the oxide film growth problem and ultimately to propose alternative approaches to the formation of a thick, stable oxide film at this material. The techniques used in this research have included electrochemical methodologies such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Crucial information has been obtained through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of ultramicrotomed specimens. Experiments were carried out initially in neutral borate solutions to characterize the compact barrier oxide film formed in this environment and expected to be present beneath the porous oxide film formed in the normal sulfuric acid anodizing medium.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
This study was undertaken to assess the short-term effects of EGF on sodium and glucose uptake, glucose metabolism and Na+/K(+)-ATPase activity in isolated enterocytes of rats. Jejunal cells exposed to EGF had a significantly greater total uptake of sodium compared to controls after 6 min. Kinetic analysis of glucose transport across BBMV's demonstrated similar Km values but a significant increase of the Vmax in vesicles prepared from cells first exposed to EGF as compared to controls. EGF was also associated with a significant increase in glucose metabolism of jejunal enterocytes after 15 min. The activity of Na+/K(+)-ATPase increased in jejunal enterocytes exposed to EGF. The increase in Na+/K(+)-ATPase activity of the cells following EGF exposure was not accompanied by an increase in immunodetectable total or assembled Na+/K(+)-ATPase protein. EGF's effect on enzyme activity was abolished by removing NaCl from the incubation solution, and by preincubating the enterocytes with phlorizin prior to addition of EGF. Preincubation with amiloride did not inhibit the effect of EGF on Na+/K(+)-ATPase. The results confirm that EGF promotes uptake of both sodium and glucose by the jejunal mucosal cells, and suggest the effect of EGF on glucose and sodium is mediated through the brush-border membrane glucose-sodium transporter. The increase in Na+/K(+)-ATPase activity that occurs with EGF appears to be secondary to a rise in intracellular Na+ concentration. The short-term effects of EGF on glucose and sodium transport by the small intestine may have potential therapeutic implications.

Abstract
Between 1976 and 1985, we repaired avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments in sixty-three shoulders (sixty-one patients) that had traumatic anterior glenohumeral instability. We describe the indications for operation, the operative technique, and the findings at the time of operation. We located thirty-seven patients (thirty-nine shoulders) for clinical follow-up (average, 5.49 years). One patient had recurrent anterior dislocation four years postoperatively, but no patient needed reoperation. The average range of motion was 171 degrees of forward elevation and 84 degrees of external rotation in abduction. According to the criteria of Rowe et al., 97 per cent of the results were good or excellent.

Abstract
A newly devised locking loop tendon-ligament suture was evaluated for its clinical application. The suture is relatively simple to use and is particularly suited to flat structures such as the medial collateral ligament, joint capsule, and patellar tendon. It affects tension and resistance to pull out without exerting major purse stringing or bunching. In a laboratory setting, this suture technique has been compared to fixation by individual sutures and several varieties of staple fixation. Simple suture fixation was quite weak, measuring 100 newtons (N). Staple fixation is not only weaker than the ligament suture, but is more highly dependent on bone quality and is generally more variable. When employed with strong suture material, a doubled ligament suture was found to be nearly twice as strong (392 N) as staple fixation into bone (208 N) and demonstrated a mean pullout strength close to the forces observed on human anterior cruciate ligaments. In combination with a well placed ligament staple into good quality bone, fixation was further enhanced (482 N) and statistically significantly improved (P greater than .05).

Abstract
Elastic recoil of the vessel wall is a common cause of failure of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in renal arteries. To oppose such recoil, balloon-expandable metal stents were implanted in artificially stenotic renal arteries in pigs and normal renal arteries in dogs and pigs. The stents were then examined angiographically and histologically at regular intervals. All stents were completely covered with endothelialized neointima in 3 weeks. There was no difference in intimal thickness between the stenotic and nonstenotic renal arteries. A large stent diameter and a large open or nonmetal surface may cause less intimal hyperplasia, but nonturbulent, fast arterial flow is probably the most important factor in ensuring long-term patency of the vessel.

Abstract
The effect of hyaluronic acid in preventing adhesion formation in a surgically prepared rabbit flexor tendon model has been evaluated. Nineteen rabbits had partial tenotomy of the middle digit flexor profundus tendon, eight being treated with hyaluronic acid and eleven with saline. The quality of tendon repair and the quantity of adhesion tissue were graded. Though both the treated and control groups showed significant adhesions, the hyaluronic acid treated tendons showed less adhesion tissue and better sliding properties as compared to the controls. No significant difference was noted in the quality of tendon repair and no adverse effects of hyaluronic acid were seen. It is proposed that additional investigation into the development of a better model of postoperative tendon adhesions and an improved characterization of this model are needed. This preliminary study suggests that hyaluronic acid is effective in reducing the quantity of adhesions after tendon surgery but warrants further evaluation.

Abstract
The electrophoretic variation of the enzymes MDH, GPI, G6PGH, 6PGDH were determined for 68 strains of Leishmania isolated in the Aethiopian zoogeographical region. Other characters determined were the DNA buoyant density of nuclear and kinetoplast DNA and the excreted factor serotype. The strains could be readily identified on the basis of these characters thus assisting in the elucidation of epidemiological problems. On the basis of these characters the strains could be divided into six groups. Three of the groups corresponded to L. donovani s.l., L. major and L. aethiopica. The three other groups identified at present have no specific name associated with them.

Abstract
The effect of metabolic inhibitors upon chloroquine-induced pigment clumping in intraerythrocytic Plasmodium berghei was studied in vitro. Oligomycin and venturicidin competitively inhibit the process with 'Ki' values of 0.18 and 0.41 mumol/l. DCCD, an agent thought to act upon a mitochondrial site close to that affected by oligomycin and venturicidin, causes pigment clumping in the absence of chloroquine ('Km' value 4.7 mumol/l). It is suggested that, after being concentrated in the cytoplasm by Fitch's high-affinity site, chloroquine interacts with a mitochondrial site, and this interaction initiates the pigment clumping process. Comparison of the effects of the ionophores 2,4,-dinitrophenol, monensin, and valinomycin indicates that a H gradient is involved at some stage in chloroquine-induced pigment clumping.
