Photo-Deactivation Strategy for Switchable ATRP with the Assistance of Molecular Switches

Light irradiation is an external stimulus, rapidly developed in switchable atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via photo-activation methods in recent years. Herein, a photo-deactivation strategy is introduced to regulate ATRP with the assistance of photoswitchable hexaarylbiimidozole (HABI). Under visible light irradiation and in the presence of HABI, ATRP is greatly decelerated or quenched depending on the concentration of HABI. Interestingly, with visible light off, ATRP can proceed smoothly and follow a first-order kinetics. Moreover, photo-switchable ATRP alternatively with light off and on is demonstrated. Besides, the mechanism of photo-deactivation ATRP involving radical quenching is proposed in the presence of HABI.

An electrochemical biosensor for the amplification of thrombin activity by perylene-mediated photoinitiated polymerization

BACKGROUND

Thrombin, a coagulation system protease, is a key enzyme involved in the coagulation cascade and has been developed as a marker for coagulation disorders. However, the methods developed in recent years have the disadvantages of complex operation, long reaction time, low specificity and sensitivity. Meanwhile, thrombin is at a lower level in the pre-disease period. Therefore, to accurately diagnose the disease, it is necessary to develop a fast, simple, highly sensitive and specific method using signal amplification technology.

RESULTS

We designed an electrochemical biosensor based on photocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) signal amplification for the detection of thrombin. Sulfhydryl substrate peptides (without carboxyl groups) are self-assembled to the gold electrode surface via Au-S bond and serve as thrombin recognition probes. The substrate peptide is cleaved in the presence of thrombin to generate -COOH, which can form a carboxylate-Zr(IV)-carboxylate complex via Zr(IV) and initiator (α-bromophenylacetic acid, BPAA). Subsequently, an electrochemical biosensor was prepared by introducing polymer chains with electrochemical signaling molecules (ferrocene, Fc) onto the electrode surface by photocatalytic (perylene, Py) mediated ATRP using ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate (FMMA) as a monomer. The concentration of thrombin was evaluated by the voltammetric signal generated by square wave voltammetry (SWV), and the result showed that the biosensor was linear between 1.0 ng/mL ∼ 10 fg/mL, with a lower detection limit of 4.0 fg/mL (∼0.1 fM). Moreover, it was shown to be highly selective for thrombin activity in complex serum samples and for thrombin inhibition screening.

SIGNIFICANCE

The biosensor is an environmentally friendly and economically efficient strategy while maintaining the advantages of high sensitivity, anti-interference, good stability and simplicity of operation, which has great potential for application in the analysis of complex samples.

Antimony-Based Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles as Lead-Free Photocatalysts for Controlled Radical Polymerization

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as versatile photocatalysts to convert solar energy for chemical processes. Perovskite photocatalyzed polymerization draws special attention due to its straightforward synthesis process and the ability to create advanced perovskite-polymer nanocomposites. Herein, this work employs Cs3Sb2Br9 perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) as a lead-free photocatalyst for light-controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs exhibit high reduction potential and interact with electronegative bromide initiator with Lewis acid Sb sites, enabling efficient photoinduced reduction of initiators and controlled polymerization under blue light irradiation. Methacrylate monomers with various functional groups are successfully polymerized, and the resulting polymer showcased a dispersity (Đ) as small as 1.27. The living nature of polymerization is confirmed by high chain end fidelity and kinetic studies. Moreover, Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs serve as heterogeneous photocatalysts, demonstrating recyclability and reusability for up to four cycles. This work presents a promising approach to overcome the limitations of lead-based perovskites in photoinduced controlled radical polymerization, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative for the synthesis of well-defined polymeric materials.

Selective and Controlled Grafting from PVDF-Based Materials by Oxygen-Tolerant Green-Light-Mediated ATRP

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) shows excellent chemical and thermal resistance and displays high dielectric strength and unique piezoelectricity, which are enabling for applications in membranes, electric insulators, sensors, or power generators. However, its low polarity and lack of functional groups limit wider applications. While inert, PVDF has been modified by grafting polymer chains by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), albeit via an unclear mechanism, given the strong C-F bonds. Herein, we applied eosin Y and green-light-mediated ATRP to modify PVDF-based materials. The method gave nearly quantitative (meth)acrylate monomer conversions within 2 h without deoxygenation and without the formation of unattached homopolymers, as confirmed by control experiments and DOSY NMR measurements. The gamma distribution model that accounts for broadly dispersed polymers in DOSY experiments was essential and serves as a powerful tool for the analysis of PVDF. The NMR analysis of poly(methyl acrylate) graft chain-ends on PVDF-CTFE (statistical copolymer with chlorotrifluoroethylene) was carried out successfully for the first time and showed up to 23 grafts per PVDF-CTFE chain. The grafting density was tunable depending on the solvent composition and light intensity during the grafting. The initiation proceeded either from the C-Cl sites of PVDF-CTFE or via unsaturations in the PVDF backbones. The dehydrofluorinated PVDF was 20 times more active than saturated PVDF during the grafting. The method was successfully applied to modify PVDF, PVDF-HFP, and Viton A401C. The obtained PVDF-CTFE-g-PnBMA materials were investigated in more detail. They featured slightly lower crystallinity than PVDF-CTFE (12-18 vs 24.3%) and had greatly improved mechanical performance: Young's moduli of up to 488 MPa, ductility of 316%, and toughness of 46 × 106 J/m3.

Electrochemically Mediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Driven by Alternating Current

Alternating current (AC) and pulsed electrolysis are gaining traction in electro(organic) synthesis due to their advantageous characteristics. We employed AC electrolysis in electrochemically mediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (eATRP) to facilitate the regeneration of the activator CuI complex on Cu0 electrodes. Additionally, Cu0 served as a slow supplemental activator and reducing agent (SARA ATRP), enabling the activation of alkyl halides and the regeneration of the CuI activator through a comproportionation reaction. We harnessed the distinct properties of Cu0 dual regeneration, both chemical and electrochemical, by employing sinusoidal, triangular, and square-wave AC electrolysis alongside some of the most active ATRP catalysts available. Compared to linear waveform (DC electrolysis) or SARA ATRP (without electrolysis), pulsed and AC electrolysis facilitated slightly faster and more controlled polymerizations of acrylates. The same AC electrolysis conditions could successfully polymerize eleven different monomers across different mediums, from water to bulk. Moreover, it proved effective across a spectrum of catalyst activity, from low-activity Cu/2,2-bipyridine to highly active Cu complexes with substituted tripodal amine ligands. Chain extension experiments confirmed the high chain-end fidelity of the produced polymers, yielding functional and high molecular-weight block copolymers. SEM analysis indicated the robustness of the Cu0 electrodes, sustaining at least 15 consecutive polymerizations.

Targeted Depletion of Individual Pathogen by Bacteria-Templated Polymer

Selective and targeted removal of individual species or strains of bacteria from complex communities can be desirable over traditional and broadly acting antibiotics in several conditions. However, strategies that can detect and ablate bacteria with high specificity are emerging in recent years. Herein, a platform is reported that uses bacteria as a template to synthesize polymers containing guanidinium groups for self-selective depletion of specific pathogenic bacteria without disturbing microbial communities. Different from conventional antibiotics, repeated treatment of bacteria with the templated polymers does not evolve drug resistance mutants after 20 days of serial passaging. Especially, high in vivo therapeutic effectiveness of the templated polymers is achieved in E. coli- and P. aeruginosa-induced microbial peritonitis. The templated polymers have shown high selectivity in in vivo antimicrobial activity, which has excellent potential as systemic antimicrobials against bacterial infections.

Eco-Conscious Approach to Thermoresponsive Star-Comb and Mikto-Arm Polymers via Enzymatically Assisted Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Followed by Ring-Opening Polymerization

This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and application of a heterofunctional initiator derived from 2-hydroxypropyl cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), having eight bromoester groups and thirteen hydroxyl groups allowing the synthesis of mikto-arm star-shaped polymers. The bromoesterification of HP-β-CD was achieved using α-bromoisobutyryl bromide as the acylation reagent, modifying the cyclodextrin (CD) molecule as confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms. The initiator's effectiveness was further demonstrated by obtaining star-comb and mikto-arm polymers via an enzymatically assisted atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method and subsequent ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The ATR polymerization quality and control depended on the type of monomer and was optimized by the way of introducing the initiator into the reaction mixture. In the case of ATRP, high conversion rates for poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate (OEOMA), with molecular weights (Mn) of 500 g/mol and 300 g/mol, were achieved. The molecular weight distribution of the obtained polymers remained in the range of 1.23-1.75. The obtained star-comb polymers were characterized by different arm lengths. Unreacted hydroxyl groups in the core of exemplary star-comb polymers were utilized in the ROP of ε-caprolactone (CL) to obtain a hydrophilic mikto-arm polymer. Cloud point temperature (TCP) values of the synthesized polymers increased with arm length, indicating the polymers' reduced hydrophobicity and enhanced solvation by water. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed the ability of the star-comb polymers to create fractals. The study elucidates advancements in the synthesis and utilization of hydrophilic sugar-based initiators for enzymatically assisted ATRP in an aqueous solution for obtaining complex star-comb polymers in a controlled manner.

Construction of molecular enrichment accelerators via assembly of enzyme surface grafted polymer and cyclodextrin achieving rapid and stable ester catalysis for biodiesel synthesis

Efficient and stable catalysis has always been the core concept of enzyme catalysis in industrial processes for manufacturing. Here, we constructed molecular enrichment accelerators to synergistically enhance enzyme activity and stability by assembling enzyme surface grafted polymer and cyclodextrin. At 40 °C, the enzyme activity of CalB-PNIPAM212/β-CD was 2.9 times that of CalB-PNIPAM212. The enzyme activity of CalB-PNIPAM428/γ-CD had reached 1.61 times that of CalB. At the same time, the stability of CalB-PNIPAM212/β-CD and CalB-PNIPAM428/γ-CD are slightly better than that of CalB under high temperature, organic solution and extreme pH conditions. The synergistic increase in activity and stability of the lipase-polymer assembly was achieved due to the structure of assembly, in which the role of cyclodextrin could enrich substrate affecting molecular diffusion. In addition, the lipase-polymer assembly proved to be an efficient catalyst for biodiesel synthesis, with a biodiesel conversion 1.4 times that of CalB at 60 °C. Therefore, this simple and low-cost lipase-polymer assembly provides new possibilities for the construction of high-efficiency industrial biocatalytic catalysts.

Biomass RNA for the Controlled Synthesis of Degradable Networks by Radical Polymerization

Nucleic acids extracted from biomass have emerged as sustainable and environmentally friendly building blocks for the fabrication of multifunctional materials. Until recently, the fabrication of biomass nucleic acid-based structures has been facilitated through simple crosslinking of biomass nucleic acids, which limits the possibility of material properties engineering. This study presents an approach to convert biomass RNA into an acrylic crosslinker through acyl imidazole chemistry. The number of acrylic moieties on RNA was engineered by varying the acylation conditions. The resulting RNA crosslinker can undergo radical copolymerization with various acrylic monomers, thereby offering a versatile route for creating materials with tunable properties (e.g., stiffness and hydrophobic characteristics). Further, reversible-deactivation radical polymerization methods, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT), were also explored as additional approaches to engineer the hydrogel properties. The study also demonstrated the metallization of the biomass RNA-based material, thereby offering potential applications in enhancing electrical conductivity. Overall, this research expands the opportunities in biomass-based biomaterial fabrication, which allows tailored properties for diverse applications.

Ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21 by click chemistry and fluorescein-mediated photo-ATRP signal amplification

The development of a convenient and efficient assay using miRNA-21 as a lung cancer marker is of great importance for the early prevention of cancer. Herein, an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of miRNA-21 was successfully fabricated under blue light excitation using click chemistry and photocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP). By using hairpin DNA as a recognition probe, the electrochemical sensor deposits numerous electroactive monomers (ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate) on the electrode surface under the reaction of photocatalyst (fluorescein) and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, thereby achieving signal amplification. This biosensor is sensitive, precise and selective for miRNA-21, and is highly specific for RNAs with different base mismatches. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor showed a linear relationship in the range of 10 fM ∼1 nM (R2 = 0.995), with a detection limit of 1.35 fM. Furthermore, the biosensor exhibits anti-interference performance when analyzing RNAs in serum samples. The biosensor is based on green chemistry and has the advantages of low cost, specificity and anti-interference ability, providing economic benefits while achieving detection objectives, which makes it highly promising for the analysis of complex samples.

Water-Soluble Squaramide-Functionalized Copolymers for Anion Recognition

A series of ethylene glycol-based squaramide-containing copolymers are synthesized via a post-polymerization functionalization strategy. Conversion of polymeric amines to squaramides is found to proceed in good yields, representing a versatile method of incorporating squaramides into polymers for anion recognition. Analysis of the polymers by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that anion binding takes place similarly to that of small-molecule squaramides. The presence of a fluorescent sensing group on polymer-bound squaramides allowed for a fluorescent sensing mechanism for anions that followed a similar trend in selectivity in aqueous DMSO solution, with selectivity observed for H2 PO4 - , AcO- and SO4 2- over other common anions tested. The anion response and selectivity towards anions is similar to that of analogous small-molecule squaramides, however polymeric squaramides exhibited a greater resistance to deprotonation by more basic anions, which is attributed to the closer proximity of individual squaramides on a macromolecule. The squaramide-containing polymers exhibited good water solubility, overcoming a common problem for anion sensors which are typically not sufficiently soluble in water to function in many required applications. Despite no anion binding being observed in water, this study represents a simple and effective method of creating fully water-soluble anion receptors which may be adapted to give improved binding affinity and selectivity depending on the anion binding moiety.

Solvent-Free Chemical Recycling of Polymethacrylates made by ATRP and RAFT polymerization: High-Yielding Depolymerization at Low Temperatures

Although controlled radical polymerization is an excellent tool to make precision polymeric materials, reversal of the process to retrieve the starting monomer is far less explored despite the significance of chemical recycling. Here, we investigate the bulk depolymerization of RAFT and ATRP-synthesized polymers under identical conditions. RAFT-synthesized polymers undergo a relatively low-temperature solvent-free depolymerization back to monomer thanks to the partial in situ transformation of the RAFT end-group to macromonomer. Instead, ATRP-synthesized polymers can only depolymerize at significantly higher temperatures (>350 °C) through random backbone scission. To aid a more complete depolymerization at even lower temperatures, we performed a facile and quantitative end-group modification strategy in which both ATRP and RAFT end-groups were successfully converted to macromonomers. The macromonomers triggered a lower temperature bulk depolymerization with an onset at 150 °C yielding up to 90 % of monomer regeneration. The versatility of the methodology was demonstrated by a scalable depolymerization (≈10 g of starting polymer) retrieving 84 % of the starting monomer intact which could be subsequently used for further polymerization. This work presents a new low-energy approach for depolymerizing controlled radical polymers and creates many future opportunities as high-yielding, solvent-free and scalable depolymerization methods are sought.

Visible Light-ATRP Driven by Tris(2-Pyridylmethyl)Amine (TPMA) Impurities in the Open Air

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of oligo(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether methacrylate (OEOMA500 ) in water is enabled using CuBr2 with tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) as a ligand under blue or green-light irradiation without requiring any additional reagent, such as a photo-reductant, or the need for prior deoxygenation. Polymers with low dispersity (Đ = 1.18-1.25) are synthesized at high conversion (>95%) using TPMA from three different suppliers, while no polymerization occurred with TPMA is synthesized and purified in the laboratory. Based on spectroscopic studies, it is proposed that TPMA impurities (i.e., imine and nitrone dipyridine), which absorb blue and green light, can act as photosensitive co-catalyst(s) in a light region where neither pure TPMA nor [(TPMA)CuBr]+ absorbs light.

Mn-MOF catalyzed multi-site atom transfer radical polymerization electrochemical sensing of miRNA-21

A green electrochemical biosensor was developed based on metal-organic framework (MOF)-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for quantifying miRNA-21, used as the proof-of-concept analyte. Unlike conventional ATRP, Mn-PCN-222 (PCN, porous coordination network) could be used as an alternative for green catalyst to substitute traditional catalysts. First, poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) was fixed on the surface of the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode, and then the Mn-PCN-222 was linked to ITO electrode via electrostatic binding with PDDA. Next, aminated ssDNA (NH₂-DNA) was used to modify the electrode further by amide reaction with Mn-PCN-222. Then, the recognition and hybridization of NH₂-DNA with miRNA-21 prompt the generation of DNA-RNA complexes, which further hybridize with Fc-DNA@β-CD-Br₁₅ and permit the initiator to be immobilized on the electrode surface. Accordingly, β-CD-Br₁₅ could initiate the polymerization of ferrocenylmethyl methacrylates (FcMMA) under the catalysis of MOF to complete the ATRP reaction. FcMMA presented a distinct electrochemical signal at ~ 0.33 V. Taking advantage of the unique multi-site properties of β-CD-Br₁₅ and the efficient catalytic reaction induced by Mn-PCN-222, ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21 was achieved with a detection limit of 0.4 fM. The proposed electrochemical biosensor has been applied to the detection of miRNA-21 in serum samples. Therefore, the proposed strategy exhibited potential in early clinical biomedicine.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Bacteria by Binder-Coupled Multifunctional Polymeric Dyes

Infectious diseases caused by pathogens are a health burden, but traditional pathogen identification methods are complex and time-consuming. In this work, we have developed well-defined, multifunctional copolymers with rhodamine B dye synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using fully oxygen-tolerant photoredox/copper dual catalysis. ATRP enabled the efficient synthesis of copolymers with multiple fluorescent dyes from a biotin-functionalized initiator. Biotinylated dye copolymers were conjugated to antibody (Ab) or cell-wall binding domain (CBD), resulting in a highly fluorescent polymeric dye-binder complex. We showed that the unique combination of multifunctional polymeric dyes and strain-specific Ab or CBD exhibited both enhanced fluorescence and target selectivity for bioimaging of Staphylococcus aureus by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The ATRP-derived polymeric dyes have the potential as biosensors for the detection of target DNA, protein, or bacteria, as well as bioimaging.

Comparative Study of Polymer-Grafted BaTiO3 Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Normal ATRP as Well as ATRP and ARGET-ATRP with Sacrificial Initiator with a Focus on Controlling the Polymer Graft Density and Molecular Weight

Structurally well-defined polymer-grafted nanoparticle hybrids are highly sought after for a variety of applications, such as antifouling, mechanical reinforcement, separations, and sensing. Herein, we report the synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) grafted- and poly(styrene) grafted-BaTiO₃ nanoparticles using activator regeneration via electron transfer (ARGET ATRP) with a sacrificial initiator, atom transfer radical polymerization (normal ATRP), and ATRP with sacrificial initiator, to understand the role of the polymerization procedure in influencing the structure of nanoparticle hybrids. Irrespective of the polymerization procedure adopted for the synthesis of nanoparticle hybrids, we noticed PS grafted on the nanoparticles showed moderation in molecular weight and graft density (ranging from 30,400 to 83,900 g/mol and 0.122 to 0.067 chain/nm²) compared to PMMA-grafted nanoparticles (ranging from 44,620 to 230,000 g/mol and 0.071 to 0.015 chain/nm²). Reducing the polymerization time during ATRP has a significant impact on the molecular weight of polymer brushes grafted on the nanoparticles. PMMA-grafted nanoparticles synthesized using ATRP had lower graft density and considerably higher molecular weight compared to PS-grafted nanoparticles. However, the addition of a sacrificial initiator during ATRP resulted in moderation of the molecular weight and graft density of PMMA-grafted nanoparticles. The use of a sacrificial initiator along with ARGET offered the best control in achieving lower molecular weight and narrow dispersity for both PS (37,870 g/mol and PDI of 1.259) and PMMA (44,620 g/mol and PDI of 1.263) nanoparticle hybrid systems.

Poly(styrene sulfonic acid)-Grafted Carbon Black Synthesized by Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Owing to their excellent electrical conductivity and robust mechanical properties, carbon-based nanocomposites are being used in a wide range of applications and devices, such as electromagnetic wave interference shielding, electronic devices, and fuel cells. While several approaches have been developed for synthesizing carbon nanotubes and carbon-black-based polymer nanocomposites, most studies have focused on the simple blending of the carbon material with a polymer matrix. However, this results in uncontrolled interactions between the carbon filler and the polymer chains, leading to the agglomeration of the carbon filler. Herein, we report a new strategy for synthesizing sulfonated polystyrene (PSS)-grafted carbon black nanoparticles (NPs) via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization. Treatments with O₂ plasma and H₂O₂ result in the effective attachment of the appropriate initiator to the carbon black NPs, thus allowing for the controlled formation of the PSS brushes. The high polymeric processability and desirable mechanical properties of the PSS-grafted carbon black NPs enable them suitable for use in nonfluorinated-hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells, which must exhibit high proton conductivity without interrupting the network of channels consisting of ionic clusters (i.e., sulfonic acid moieties).

Bioinspired N-Oxide-Based Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes for Robust Fouling-Resistant Surfaces

Fouling-resistant surfaces are needed for various environmental applications. Inspired by superhydrophilic N-oxide-based osmolytes in saltwater fish, we demonstrate the use of a trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) analogue for constructing fouling-resistant surfaces. The readily synthesized N-oxide monomer of methacrylamide is grafted to filtration membrane surfaces by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Successful grafting of the amine N-oxide brush layer as confirmed by material characterization endows the surface with increased hydrophilicity, reduced charge, and decreased roughness. Notably, the introduction of the N-oxide layer does not compromise transport properties, i.e., water permeability and water-salt selectivity. Moreover, the modified membrane exhibits improved antifouling properties with a lower flux decline (32.1%) and greater fouling reversibility (18.55%) than the control sample (45.4% flux decline and 3.26% fouling reversibility). We further evaluate foulant-membrane interaction using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to relate the reduced fouling tendency to the synergic effects of surface characteristic changes after amine N-oxide modification. Our results demonstrate the promise and potential of the N-oxide-based polymer brushes for the design of fouling resistance surfaces for a variety of emerging environmental applications.

In situ Surface-Initiated ATRP Mediated by Gallium-Based Liquid Metal Nanodroplets

Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) is one of the most popular methods for surface modifications with functional polymer films, which has attracted significant attention in recent years. Here, we report a facile method of gallium-based liquid metal nanodroplets (GLM) mediated SI-ATRP to prepare polymer brushes on GLM surfaces. The ATRP initiator modified GLM nanodroplets (GLM-Br) act as a substrate for the in situ SI-ATRP and participate as a reducing agent to reduce Cu(II) deactivators to Cu(I) activators. UV-vis spectra confirm the feasibility of the in situ SI-ATRP and indicate that the thickness and density of polymer brushes play an important role in performing a successful ATRP on GLMs surfaces. Homo- and block copolymers, poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) (PSPMA) and poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-b-(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt)) P(DMAEMA-b-SPMA) are successfully grafted to the GLM nanodroplets. Polymer brushes modified GLM nanodroplets show potential applications such as friction reduction and oil-water emulsion separation. Water-soluble PEG segmented mannose-based macromolecules: Synthesis and their biocompatibility

The macromolecular architectures, namely mannose-based methacrylate acetyl-mannopyranoside and PEG block copolymers (AB type copolymer [PEG-b-PMAM], poly(ethyleneglycol)-b-poly(methacryl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-mannopyranoside and ABA type copolymer [PMAM-b-PEG-b-PMAM], poly(methacryl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-mannopyranoside-b-poly(ethyleneglycol)-b-poly(methacryl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-mannopyranoside) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method that were deacetylated to generate the corresponding water-soluble and biocompatible glycopolymer macromolecules. The molecular weight of acetyl and deacetylate macromolecules was in the range of 7083-9499 and 4659-6026, as determined by GPC and proton NMR spectra. The 5 % decomposition temperatures for acetylated methacrylate macromolecules (218-299 °C) were higher than the corresponding water-soluble macromolecules (204-248 °C). The conjugation of poly(methacryl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-mannopyranoside (PMAM) segment with the PEG block decreased the glass transition (Tg) value, and the water-soluble macromolecules displayed Tg in the range of 92-95 °C. The biocompatibility of the synthesized water-soluble mannose-based macromolecules was determined using Human Bone Derived Cells (HBDC) culture with the TCP (Tissue culture plastic) template as control. Using three different concentrations of the synthesized glycopolymers, HBDC's were cultured for 1, 3, and 7 days. The effect of mannomethacrylate macromolecules on mitochondrial activity of HBDC's was estimated using colorimetry that showed the conversion of MTS [3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium-bromide] to formazan (MTS assay). ABA type diblock copolymer architecture exhibited increased absorbance values of 3 and 7 day cultures at 1-100 M concentrations, with the highest values observed at a concentration of 1 M for day 3 cultures. The design of these novel mannose-based macromolecules is important for improving cell proliferation, cell adhesion, and osteointegration efficiency.

Use of a Photocleavable Initiator to Characterize Polymer Chains Grafted onto a Metal Plate with the Grafting-from Method

The thorough characterization of polymer chains grafted through a "grafting-from" process onto substrates based on the determination of number (Mn) and weight (Mw) average molar masses, as well as dispersity (Ɖ), is quite challenging. It requires the cleavage of grafted chains selectively at the polymer-substrate bond without polymer degradation to allow their analysis in solution with steric exclusion chromatography, in particular. The study herein describes a technique for the selective cleavage of PMMA grafted onto titanium substrate (Ti-PMMA) using an anchoring molecule that combines an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator and a UV-cleavable moiety. This technique allows the demonstration of the efficiency of the ATRP of PMMA on titanium substrates and verification that the chains were grown homogeneously.

Visible-Light-Mediated Controlled Radical Branching Polymerization in Water

Hyperbranched polymethacrylates were synthesized by green-light-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under biologically relevant conditions in the open air. Sodium 2-bromoacrylate (SBA) was prepared in situ from commercially available 2-bromoacrylic acid and used as a water-soluble inibramer to induce branching during the copolymerization of methacrylate monomers. As a result, well-defined branched polymethacrylates were obtained in less than 30 min with predetermined molecular weights (36 000<M_n <170 000), tunable degree of branching, and low dispersity values (1.14≤Đ≤1.33). Moreover, the use of SBA inibramer enabled the synthesis of bioconjugates with a well-controlled branched architecture.

Recent Advances in the Application of ATRP in the Synthesis of Drug Delivery Systems

Advances in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) have enabled the precise design and preparation of nanostructured polymeric materials for a variety of biomedical applications. This paper briefly summarizes recent developments in the synthesis of bio-therapeutics for drug delivery based on linear and branched block copolymers and bioconjugates using ATRP, which have been tested in drug delivery systems (DDSs) over the past decade. An important trend is the rapid development of a number of smart DDSs that can release bioactive materials in response to certain external stimuli, either physical (e.g., light, ultrasound, or temperature) or chemical factors (e.g., changes in pH values and/or environmental redox potential). The use of ATRPs in the synthesis of polymeric bioconjugates containing drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids, as well as systems applied in combination therapies, has also received considerable attention.

ATRP Enhances Structural Correlations In Polymerization-Induced Phase Separation

Synthetic methods to control the structure of materials at sub-micron scales are typically based on the self-assembly of structural building blocks with precise size and morphology. On the other hand, many living systems can generate structure across a broad range of length scales in one step directly from macromolecules, using phase separation. Here, we introduce and control structure at the nano- and microscales through polymerization in the solid state, which has the unusual capability of both triggering and arresting phase separation. In particular, we show that atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) enables control of nucleation, growth, and stabilization of phase-separated poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) domains in a solid polystyrene (PS) matrix. ATRP yields durable nanostructures with low size dispersity and high degrees of structural correlations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the length scale of these materials is controlled by the synthesis parameters.

Adsorption removal of styrene on C-Cl grafted silica gel adsorbents

The heat desorption of styrene from adsorbents is impracticable owing to its spontaneous polymerization under heating conditions. However, the feature also brings a potential promoting effect on styrene adsorption. Therefore, it is expected to develop the non-regenerative adsorbents with large adsorption capacity by strengthening the polymerization effect. In this work, C-Cl grafted silica gel adsorbents were prepared by introducing (Chloromethyl)dimethylchlorosilane (CMDMCS) and FeCl₂ into silica gel. The C-Cl grafted silica gel exhibited excellent styrene adsorption performance, its adsorption amounts for styrene were 4.67 times and 9 times of unmodified silica gel under dry air condition and high humidity condition (RH = 80%), respectively. In addition, the adsorption of styrene on C-Cl grafted silica gel was almost unaffected by the presence of toluene. The characterization of adsorbents after styrene adsorption indicated that the improvement of adsorption capacity of C-Cl grafted silica gel for styrene can be attributed to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene molecules on modified silica gel during adsorption process.

Physicochemical characteristics of lignin-g-PMMA/PLA blend via atom transfer radical polymerization depending on the structural difference of organosolv lignin

Lignin has different structural characteristics depending on the extraction conditions. In this study, three types of ethanol organosolv lignin (EOL) were produced under different extraction conditions involving the reaction temperature (140, 160, 180 °C), sulfuric acid concentration (0.5, 1, 1.5 %), and ethanol concentration (40, 60, 80 %) to compare the difference in properties when mixed with polylactic acid (PLA) matrix after atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP of EOL was conducted to improve its compatibility with PLA using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a monomer. The molecular weight of each EOL increased significantly, and the glass transition temperature (T_g) decreased from approximately 150 to 110 °C. The EOL-g-PMMA copolymer exhibited a melting point (T_m), whereas EOL did not, implying that the thermoplasticity increased. The EOL-g-PMMA/PLA blend and film were prepared with 10 % of the copolymer in the PLA matrix. The tensile strength and strain of the blend were higher than those of unmodified organosolv lignin as the compatibility increased, and the UV transmittance was lower than that of neat PLA because of the UV protecting properties of EOL moiety.

Phase Diagrams of Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly Are Largely Determined by Polymer Recombination

In the current work, atom transfer radical polymerization-induced self-assembly (ATRP PISA) phase diagrams were obtained by the means of dissipative particle dynamics simulations. A fast algorithm for determining the equilibrium morphology of block copolymer aggregates was developed. Our goal was to assess how the chemical nature of ATRP affects the self-assembly of diblock copolymers in the course of PISA. We discovered that the chain growth termination via recombination played a key role in determining the ATRP PISA phase diagrams. In particular, ATRP with turned off recombination yielded a PISA phase diagram very similar to that obtained for a simple ideal living polymerization process. However, an increase in the recombination probability led to a significant change of the phase diagram: the transition between cylindrical micelles and vesicles was strongly shifted, and a dependence of the aggregate morphology on the concentration was observed. We speculate that this effect occurred due to the simultaneous action of two factors: the triblock copolymer architecture of the terminated chains and the dispersity of the solvophobic blocks. We showed that these two factors affected the phase diagram weakly if they acted separately; however, their combination, which naturally occurs during ATRP, affected the ATRP PISA phase diagram strongly. We suggest that the recombination reaction is a key factor leading to the complexity of experimental PISA phase diagrams.

Well-Defined pH-Sensitive Self-Assembled Triblock Copolymer-Based Crosslinked Micelles for Efficient Cancer Chemotherapy

Delivery of chemotherapeutics to cancer cells using polymeric micelles is a promising strategy for cancer treatment. However, limited stability of micelles, premature drug release and off-target effect are the major obstacles that restrict the utilization of polymeric micelles as effective drug delivery systems. In this work, we addressed these issues through the innovative design of targeted pH-sensitive crosslinked polymeric micelles for chemotherapeutic delivery. A well-defined triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(butyl acrylate) (PEG-b-PHEMA-b-PBA), was synthesized by living radical polymerization, and then modified by using 4-pentenoic anhydride to incorporate pendant crosslinkable alkene groups in the middle block. The resulting copolymer underwent self-assembly in aqueous solution to form non-crosslinked micelles (NCMs). Subsequently, intramicellar thiol-ene crosslinking was performed by using 1,4-butanediol bis(3-mercaptopropionate) to give crosslinked micelles (CMs) with pH-sensitive crosslinks. The targeted CM (cRGD-DOX₁₀-CM5) was readily prepared by using tumor-targeting ligand cyclo(Arg-Gly-Asp-D-Phe-Cys) (cRGD) together with the 1,4-butanediol bis(3-mercaptopropionate) during the crosslinking step. The study of cumulative DOX release revealed the pH-sensitive feature of drug release from these CMs. An in vitro MTT assay revealed that NCMs and CMs are biocompatible with MCF 10A cells, and the samples exhibited significant therapeutic efficiency as compared to free DOX. Cellular uptake studies confirmed higher uptake of cRGD-DOX₁₀-CM5 by MCF 10A cancer cells via cRGD-receptor-mediated endocytosis as compared to the corresponding analogues without cRGD. These results indicate that such pH-responsive crosslinked PEG-b-PHEMA-b-PBA-based micelles are therapeutically effective against cancer cells and hold remarkable promise to act as smart drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.

Syndiotactic Poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-Based Stereoregular Diblock Copolymers: Synthesis and Self-Assembly Studies

Syndiotactic poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (sP4M1P)-based stereoregular diblock copolymers, namely sP4M1P-b-polystyrene and sP4M1P-b-polymethylmethacrylate, were prepared from an α-bromoester-capped sP4M1P macroinitiator, which was chain extended with styrene and methyl methacrylate, respectively, via the atom transfer radical polymerization reaction. The α-bromoester-capped sP4M1P was generated by the esterification of hydroxyl-capped sP4M1P with α-bromoisobutyryl bromide. The hydroxyl-capped sP4M1P was synthesized by inducing a selective chain transfer reaction to aluminum during the syndiospecific polymerization of 4-methyl-1-pentene in the presence of a syndiospecific metallocene catalyst. As stereoregular diblock copolymers are difficult to prepare using existing methods, the current study offers an effective process for the preparation of sP4M1P-based stereoregular diblock copolymers. These copolymers were found to have well-defined architectures and they can undergo molecular self-assembly into ordered nanostructures, as evidenced by small-angle X-ray scattering analyses.

Well-Defined pH-Responsive Self-Assembled Block Copolymers for the Effective Codelivery of Doxorubicin and Antisense Oligonucleotide to Breast Cancer Cells

The worldwide steady increase in the number of cancer patients motivates the development of innovative drug delivery systems for combination therapy as an effective clinical modality for cancer treatment. Here, we explored a design concept based on poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-formylbenzoic acid) [PEG-b-PDMAEMA-b-P(HEMA-FBA)] for the dual delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and GTI2040 (an antisense oligonucleotide for ribonucleotide reductase inhibition) to MCF-7 breast cancer cells. PEG-b-PDMAEMA-b-PHEMA, the precursor copolymer, was prepared through chain extensions from a PEG-based macroinitiator via two consecutive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) steps. Then, it was modified at the PHEMA block with 4-formylbenzoic acid (FBA) to install reactive aldehyde moieties. A pH-responsive polymer-drug conjugate (PDC) was obtained by conjugating DOX to the polymer structure via acid-labile imine linkages, and subsequently self-assembled in an aqueous solution to form DOX-loaded self-assembled nanoparticles (DOX-SAN) with a positively charged shell. DOX-SAN condensed readily with negatively charged GTI2040 to form GTI2040/DOX-SAN nanocomplexes. Gel-retardation assay confirmed the affinity between GTI2040 and DOX-SAN. The GTI2040/DOX-SAN nanocomplex at N/P ratio of 30 exhibited a volume-average hydrodynamic size of 136.4 nm and a zeta potential of 21.0 mV. The pH-sensitivity of DOX-SAN was confirmed by the DOX release study based on the significant cumulative DOX release at pH 5.5 relative to pH 7.4. Cellular uptake study demonstrated favorable accumulation of GTI2040/DOX-SAN inside MCF-7 cells compared with free GTI2040/DOX. In vitro cytotoxicity study indicated higher therapeutic efficacy of GTI2040/DOX-SAN relative to DOX-SAN alone because of the downregulation of the R2 protein of ribonucleotide reductase. These outcomes suggest that the self-assembled pH-responsive triblock copolymer is a promising platform for combination therapy, which may be more effective in combating cancer than individual therapies.

A novel electrochemical platform for assay of alkaline phosphatase based on amifostine and ATRP signal amplification

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), an important hydrolase involved in dephosphorylation, is a common clinical indicator of many diseases. In the present study, we constructed a novel electrochemical sensor using amifostine as the substrate of ALP and activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) as a signal amplification strategy for sensitive determination of ALP activity. In particular, in the presence of ALP, the phosphate group of amifostine was hydrolyzed to form a sulfhydryl group, which could attach to a gold electrode via a sulfur-gold bond. Then, the initiator α-bromophenylacetic acid (BPAA) was linked to the hydrolysis product of amifostine through an amide bond, resulting in the production of electroactive polymer chains on the gold electrode by the monomer ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate (FMMA) via ARGET ATRP. Under optimal parameters, the electrochemical sensor demonstrated a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.71 mU mL^-1 with a linear range of 5-100 mU mL^-1. In addition to satisfactory selectivity, the potential application of this approach for ALP activity detection in human serum samples was demonstrated. Due to its efficiency, simplicity of operation, and cost-effectiveness, the proposed electrochemical sensor has great promise as a universal method for ALP assays and inhibitor screening.

Compositionally Anisotropic Colloidal Surfactant Decorated with Dual Metallic Nanoparticles as a Pickering Emulsion Stabilizer and Their Application in Catalysis

We aim to introduce compositionally anisotropic Janus particles, hemispheres of which was modified by hydrophilic poly(2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) [poly(DMAEMA)] brushes to display amphiphilic surfactant-type characteristics. Acquired by the electrohydrodynamic co-jetting technique, these colloidal surfactants were employed to stabilize octanol/water-based Pickering emulsion, which shows prolonged stability for more than 4 months. To explore their potential as the interfacial catalyst, iron(0) nanoparticles were incorporated in one hemisphere during electrojetting, whereas gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were patched onto the surface of the other hemisphere, which was previously modified by the poly(DMAEMA) brush. Ultimately, simultaneous rapid reduction (100% conversion in 1 min) of p-nitrophenol or methyl orange (MO) by GNPs in the aqueous phase and dechlorination of trichloroethylene (a hazardous chlorinated solvent waste) present in the octanol phase were accomplished at the organic-water interface stabilized by the Janus particles decorated by dual metallic nanoparticles. In addition, facile recovery and recyclability of the catalyst were also achieved. The novel colloidal surfactant demonstrated in this study may open up a new avenue to accomplish catalysis of several organic reactions occurring at the water-oil interface.

Effect of Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Reaction Time on PCB Binding Capacities of Styrene-CMA/QMA Core-Shell Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Water pollution continues to be one of the greatest challenges humankind faces worldwide. Increasing population growth, fast industrialization and modernization risk the worsening of water accessibility and quality in the coming years. Nanoadsorbents have steadily gained attention as remediation technologies that can meet stringent water quality demands. In this work, core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) comprised of an iron oxide magnetic core and a styrene based polymer shell were synthesized via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and characterized them for their binding of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as model organic contaminants. Acrylated plant derived polyphenols, curcumin multiacrylate (CMA) and quercetin multiacrylate (QMA), and divinylbenzene (DVB) were incorporated into the polymeric shell to create high affinity binding sites for PCBs. The affinity of these novel materials for PCB 126 was evaluated and fitted to the nonlinear Langmuir model to determine binding affinities (K_D). The K_D values obtained for all the MNP systems showed higher binding affinities for PCB 126 that carbonaceous materials, like activated carbon and graphene oxide, the most widely used adsorption materials for water remediation today. The effect of increasing ATRP reaction time on the binding affinity of MNPs demonstrated the ability to tune polymer shell thickness by modifying the reaction extent and initial crosslinker concentrations in order to maximize pollutant binding. The enhancement in binding affinity and capacity for PCB 126 was demonstrated by the use of hydrophobic, aromatic rich molecules like styrene, CMA, QMA and DVB, within the polymeric shell provides more sites for π-π interactions to occur between the MNP surface and the PCB molecules. Overall, the high affinities for PCBs, as model organic pollutants, and magnetic capabilities of the core-shell MNPs synthesized provide a strong rationale for their application as nanoadsorbents in the environmental remediation of specific harmful contaminants.

Chemical grafting fluoropolymer on cellulose nanocrystals and its rheological modification to perfluoropolyether oil

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is the sustainable nanoparticle derived from natural cellulose, widely used as the functional additive to tailor the properties and performances of diverse matters. This study attempted the application of CNC as the rheological modifier in fluorocarbon lubricating oil (perfluoropolyether, PFPE). To solve the incompatibility between cellulose and base oil, fluoropolymer was covalently grafted onto the surface of nanocrystals by living radical polymerization. The introduction of modified cellulose nanocrystals exhibited significant thickening effect to PFPE-based hybrid oils, with the increase on viscosity, improved thixotropy performance and enhanced storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G″). In particular, when adding 10-15 wt% modified nanocrystals, a transition of G' > G″ from the flowable state to grease-like state appeared in hybrid oils, attributed to the formation of stable subnetwork based on the chain entanglement of the grafted fluoropolymer and PFPE oil.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of miRNA based on polymerization signal amplification

The detection of trace tumor-related serum miRNA biomarkers is in great demand for the early diagnosis of cancer. Herein, for the first time, an electrochemical sensing platform based on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) signal amplification strategy for ultrasensitive determination of the breast and prostate cancer marker miRNA-141 has been developed. The hairpin DNAs were immobilized on the benzoic acid modified electrode to capture the target miRNA-141, the recognition of miRNA-141 released thiol groups on the end of probes, followed by the association of ATRP initiators modified gold nanoparticles with thiol groups, and then triggered the polymerization on electrode surface, causing a great number of ferrocene (Fc) signal molecules grafted on the sensor interface. As a result, the electrochemical signal intensity of signal molecule has been greatly increased. The proposed biosensor has a linear range from 10 pM to 10 aM with a detection limit of 3.23 aM for miRNA-141, opening a new and promising path for ultrasensitive analysis of tumor-related miRNAs.

Synthesis of pH-Sensitive and Self-Fluorescent Polymeric Micelles Derived From Rosin and Vegetable Oils via ATRP

Preparation and application of sustainable polymers derived from renewable resources are of great significance. The aim of this study is to synthesize a kind of sustainable polymeric micelles from rosin and vegetable oils via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and to investigate the doxorubicin delivery properties of these micelles. Dehydroabietic acid-based poly lauryl methacrylate (DA-PLMA) with narrow PDI of 1.13 was prepared in a well-controlled process using rosin as an ATRP initiator. Thereafter, carboxylic groups were introduced to form poly methacrylic acid (PMAA) moieties in DA-PLMA polymer via acid hydrolysis. The resulted DA-PLMA-PMAA could self-assemble in water to form pH-dependent polymeric micelles with a diameter of ∼65 nm and PDI as low as 0.105. Owing to the existence of rosin, DA-PLMA-PMAA micelles also showed self-fluorescence properties. In addition, Dox-loaded micelles were prepared in aqueous solution with the drug-loading capacity as high as 16.0% and showed sustained-release characteristics. These results demonstrate great promise for designing polymeric micellar from rosin and vegetable oils.

A host guest interaction enhanced polymerization amplification for electrochemical detection of cocaine

Cocaine (Coc) is one of the illegal drugs and is harmful to digestive, immune, cardiovascular and urogenital systems. To achieve drug abuse control and legal action, it is essential to develop an effective method for cocaine analysis. In this work, an aptasensor has been developed using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) based on host-guest chemistry for electrochemical analysis of cocaine. The NH₂-DNA (Apt1) was immobilized on the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode via addition reaction, and Fc-DNA (Apt2) was introduced to ITO relying on the specific recognition of cocaine. The Apt2 can initiate host-guest chemistry between Apt2 and ATRP initiators (β-CD-Br₁₅), then the β-CD-Br₁₅ further triggers ATRP. Moreover, ATRP avoids the sluggish kinetics and poor coupling capability sustained. The result shows a sensitive and selective analysis of cocaine within a linear range from 0.1 ng/mL to 10 μg/mL (R² = 0.9985), with the detection limit down to 0.0335 ng/mL. Thus, this strategy provides a universal method for the analysis of illegal drugs.

Molecular Brushes with a Polyimide Backbone and Poly(ε-Caprolactone) Side Chains by the Combination of ATRP, ROP, and CuAAC

An approach to the synthesis of the novel molecular brushes with a polyimide (PI) backbone and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) side chains was developed. To obtain such copolymers, a combination of various synthesis methods was used, including polycondensation, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring opening polymerization (ROP), and Cu (I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition (CuAAC). ATRP of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on PI macroinitiator followed by ROP of ε-caprolactone (CL) provided a “brush on brush” structure PI-g-(PHEMA-g-PCL). For the synthesis of PI-g-PCL two synthetic routes combining ROP and CuAAC were compared: (1) polymer-analogous transformations of a multicenter PI macroinitiator with an initiating hydroxyl group separated from the main chain by a triazole ring followed by ROP of CL, or (2) a separate synthesis of macromonomers with the desirable functional groups (polyimide with azide groups and PCL with terminal alkyne groups), followed by a click reaction. Results showed that the first approach allows to obtain graft copolymers with a PI backbone and relatively short PCL side chains. While the implementation of the second approach leads to a more significant increase in the molecular weight, but unreacted linear PCL remains in the system. Obtained macroinitiators and copolymers were characterized using ¹H NMR and IR spectroscopy, their molecular weight characteristics were determined by SEC with triple detection. TGA and DSC were used to determine their thermal properties. X-ray scattering data showed that the introduction of a polyimide block into the polycaprolactone matrix did not change the degree of crystallinity of PCL.

Active in Sleep: Iron Guanidine Catalyst Performs ROP on Dormant Side of ATRP

Copolymers are the answer to property limitations of homopolymers. In order to use the full variety of monomers available, catalysts active in more than one polymerization mechanism are currently investigated. Iron guanidine catalysts have shown to be extraordinarily active in ROP of lactide and herein prove their versatility by also promoting ATRP of styrene. The presented iron complex is the first polymerizing lactide and styrene simultaneously to a defined block copolymer in a convenient one-pot synthesis. Both mechanisms work hand in hand with ROP using the dominantly present FeII species on the dormant side of the ATRP equilibrium. This orthogonal copolymerization by a benign iron catalyst opens up new pathways to biocompatible polymerization procedures broadening the scope of ATRP applications.

Assemblies of Polyacrylonitrile-Derived Photoactive Polymers as Blue and Green Light Photo-Cocatalysts for Cu-Catalyzed ATRP in Water and Organic Solvents

Photoluminescent nanosized quasi-spherical polymeric assemblies prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), ht-PLPPAN, were demonstrated to have the ability to photo-induce atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) catalyzed by low, parts per million concentrations of CuII complex with tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA). Such photo induced ATRP reactions of acrylate and methacrylate monomers were performed in water or organic solvents, using ht-PLPPAN as the photo-cocatalyst under blue or green light irradiation. Mechanistic studies indicate that ht-PLPPAN helps to sustain the polymerization by facilitating the activation of alkyl bromide species by two modes: 1) green or blue light-driven photoreduction of the CuII catalyst to the activating CuI form, and 2) direct activation of dormant alkyl bromide species which occurs only under blue light. The photoreduction of the CuII complex by ht-PLPPAN was confirmed by linear sweep voltammetry performed under illumination. Analysis of the polymerization kinetics in aqueous media indicated even though CuI complexes comprised only 1-1.4% of all Cu species at equilibrium, they exhibited high activation rate constant and activated the alkyl bromide initiators five to six orders of magnitude faster than ht-PLPPAN.

Poly(methacrylic Acid)-Cellulose Brushes as Anticancer Porphyrazine Carrier

The prospective strategy for treatment of cancer is based on the application of nano-sized macromolecular carriers, which are able penetrate inside and can be accumulated within tumor tissue. In this work graft copolymers of cellulose and poly(methacrylic acid) has been prepared and tested as a nanocontainers for the delivery of drug to tumor. For this purpose, two derivatives of porphyrazine suitable for photodynamic cancer therapy were loaded into prepared polymer brush. Fluorescence imaging was applied for monitoring of accumulation of porphyrazine in the CT26 murine colon carcinoma. The selective accumulation of cellulose brush loaded with porphyrazine in tumor was demonstrated by fluorescence intensity contrast between the tumor area and normal tissues. The tumor growth rate after photodynamic therapy were assessed and inhibition of its growth was revealed.

Preparation, Properties and Cell Biocompatibility of Room Temperature LCST-Hydrogels Based on Thermoresponsive PEO Stars

A series of star and linear polymers based on a poly(ethylene oxide) core and poly(diethylene glycol ethyl ether acrylate) outer arms were synthesised by atom-transfer radical polymerization. The polydispersity of the polymers were low, showing good control of initiation and growth. They all showed lower critical solution (LCST) behaviour, and at 30% concentration most gelled at or below room temperature. The behaviour depended on the number and length of the arms, with the polymers with longer arms gelling at a lower temperature and producing stiffer gels. The shear modulus of the gels varied between 1 and 48 kPa, with the gelling temperature varying between 16 and 23 °C. Attempted cell cultures with the polymers proved unsuccessful, which was determined to be due to the high concentration of polymers needed for gelling.

Application of peptide nucleic acid in electrochemical nucleic acid biosensors

The early diagnosis of major diseases, such as malignant tumors, has always been an important field of research. Through screening, early detection of such diseases, and timely and effective treatment can significantly improve the survival rate of patients and reduce medical costs. Therefore, the development of a simple detection method with high sensitivity and strong specificity, and that is low cost is of great significance for the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Electrochemical DNA biosensing analysis is a technology based on Watson Crick base complementary pairing, which uses the capture probe of a known sequence to specifically recognize the target DNA and detect its concentration. Because of its advantages of low cost, simple operation, portability, and easy miniaturization, it has been widely researched and has become a cutting-edge topic in the field of biochemical analysis and precision medicine. However, the existing methods for electrochemical DNA biosensing analysis have some shortcomings, such as poor stability and specificity of capture probes, insufficient detection sensitivity, and long detection cycles. In this review, we focus on improving the sensitivity and practicability of electrochemical DNA biosensing analysis methods and summarize a series of research work carried out by using electrically neutral peptide nucleic acid as an immobilized capture probe.

Two-distinct polymer ubiquitin conjugates by photochemical grafting-from

Protein-polymer bioconjugates present a way to make enzymes more efficient and robust for industrial and medicinal applications. While much work has focused on mono-functional conjugates, i.e. conjugates with one type of polymer attached such as poly(ethylene glycol) or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), there is a practical interest in gaining additional functionality by synthesizing well-defined bifunctional conjugates in a hetero-arm star copolymer architecture with protein as the core. Using ubiquitin as a model protein, a synthetic scheme was developed to attach two different polymers (OEOMA and DMAm) directly to the protein surface, using orthogonal conjugation chemistries and grafting-from by photochemical living radical polymerization techniques. The additional complexity arising from attempts to selectively modify multiple sites led to decreased polymerization performance and indicates that ICAR-ATRP and RAFT are not well-suited to bifunctional bioconjugates applications. Nonetheless, the polymerization conditions preserve the native fold of the ubiquitin and enable production of a hetero-arm star protein-polymer bioconjugate.

New Photoresponsive Poly(meth)acrylates Bearing Azobenzene Moieties Obtained via ATRP Polymerization Exhibiting Liquid-Crystalline Behavior

Here, we report our studies on photoresponsive poly(meth)acrylates containing azobenzene groups connected to a polymer backbone via a short methylene linker. A series of side-chain azobenzene polymers was synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique using several catalytic systems. The polymers synthesized under the optimized conditions were characterized by a narrow polydispersity (Đ ≤ 1.35), and they underwent a reversible transformation of their structure under light illumination. The fabricated polymers can store and release energy accumulated during the UV-light illumination by the thermal cis-trans isomerization of the chromophore groups. The enthalpy of the process (determined from DSC) was relatively high and equaled 61.9 J∙g⁻¹ (17 Wh∙kg⁻¹), indicating a high potential of these materials in energy storage applications. The liquid-crystalline behavior of the synthesized poly(meth)acrylates was demonstrated by the birefringent optical textures as observed in thin-films and X-ray scattering studies.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Polymer-Grafted Low-K and High-K Nanoparticles for Dielectric and Electronic Applications

The synthesis of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) or hairy nanoparticles (HNPs) by tethering of polymer chains to the surface of nanoparticles is an important technique to obtain nanostructured hybrid materials that have been widely used in the formulation of advanced polymer nanocomposites. Ceramic-based polymer nanocomposites integrate key attributes of polymer and ceramic nanomaterial to improve the dielectric properties such as breakdown strength, energy density and dielectric loss. This review describes the "grafting from" and "grafting to" approaches commonly adopted to graft polymer chains on NPs pertaining to nano-dielectrics. The article also covers various surface initiated controlled radical polymerization techniques, along with templated approaches for grafting of polymer chains onto SiO2, TiO2, BaTiO3, and Al2O3 nanomaterials. As a look towards applications, an outlook on high-performance polymer nanocomposite capacitors for the design of high energy density pulsed power thin-film capacitors is also presented.

Surface molecular imprinting on polystyrene resin for selective adsorption of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid

Using chloromethylated polystyrene resin, N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as support, functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively, the molecularly imprinted resin (MIR) and non-imprinted resin (NIR) were fabricated by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and surface imprinting technique for the selective adsorption of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HB) from aqueous solutions. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption processes of the 4-HB with MIR and NIR followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms were appreciably described by the Langmuir model. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiencies of MIR and NIR for different compounds in single and binary solutions proved that MIR exhibited high adsorption capacity and favorable selectivity toward 4-HB over other structurally related organic compounds (i.e., benzoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, phenol, and 2-hydroxynaphthalene). In addition, MIR could effectively remove 4-HB from a simulated effluent in a dynamic adsorption experiment. This study illustrates in-depth perspectives on the adsorption mechanisms of 4-HB onto MIR; interactions between the adsorbate and adsorbent were proposed based on the adsorption behaviours and instrumental analyses. The resulting MIR is a promising material for the interference-free adsorbent in the selective adsorption of 4-HB from mixed solutions.

Smart, Naturally-Derived Macromolecules for Controlled Drug Release

A series of troxerutin-based macromolecules with ten poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) homopolymer side chains were synthesized by a supplemental activator and reducing agent atom transfer radical polymerization (SARA ATRP) approach. The prepared precisely-defined structures with low dispersity (M_w/M_n < 1.09 for PAA-based, and M_w/M_n < 1.71 for PDMAEMA-based macromolecules) exhibited pH-responsive behavior depending on the length of the polymer grafts. The properties of the received polyelectrolytes were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement to determine the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential upon pH changes. Additionally, PDMAEMA-based polymers showed thermoresponsive properties and exhibited phase transfer at a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Thanks to polyelectrolyte characteristics, the prepared polymers were investigated as smart materials for controlled release of quercetin. The influence of the length of the polymer grafts for the quercetin release profile was examined by UV–VIS spectroscopy. The results suggest the strong correlation between the length of the polymer chains and the efficiency of active substance release, thus, the adjustment of the composition of the macromolecules characterized by branched architecture can precisely control the properties of smart delivery systems.

Hydrophilic Cross-Linked Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Diblock Copolymer as Proton Exchange Membrane for Fuel Cells

This study proposes a hydrophobic and hydrophilic aliphatic diblock copolymer wherein the hydrophobic block contains glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) units that are distanced by poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) segments to fabricate a proton exchange membrane (PEM). This diblock copolymer also known as ionomer due to the hydrophilic block comprising 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPM) block. The diblock copolymer was synthesized in the one-pot atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) synthesis. Subsequently, the membrane was fabricated by means of solution casting in which an organic diamine, e.g., ethylene diamine (EDA), was introduced to crosslink the diblock copolymer chains via the addition of amine to the epoxide group of GMA. As a result, the PEM attained possesses dual continuous phases, in which the hydrophobic domains are either agglomerated or bridged by the EDA-derived crosslinks, whereas the hydrophilic domains constitute the primary proton conducting channels. The in-situ crosslinking hydrophobic block by using a hydrophilic cross-linker represents the merit aspect since it leads to both improved proton conductivity and dimensional stability in alcohol fuel. To characterize the above properties, Nafion^® 117 and random copolymer of P(AN-co-GMA-co-SPM) were used as control samples. The PEM with the optimized composition demonstrates slightly better fuel cell performance than Nafion 117. Lastly, this diblock ionomer is nonfluorinated and hence favors lowering down both material and environmental costs.

Electrochemistry for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is the most powerful and most employed technology of Controlled Radical Polymerization (CRP) to produce polymers with well-defined architecture, that is, composition, topology, and functionality. Several hundreds of papers are published every year on ATRP processes, mainly based on empiric experimental procedures. Electrochemistry powerfully entered in the field of ATRP about 10 years ago, providing important contributions both to the further development of the process and to a better understanding of its mechanism. Five main issues took advantage of electrochemistry and/or its synergism with ATRP: i) understanding the mechanism of ATRP activation; ii) determination of thermodynamic parameters; iii) determination of activation and deactivation rate constants; iv) the SARA ATRP vs SET-LRP dispute: the role of Cu⁰ ; v) electrochemically-mediated ATRP.
