Revisiting the isolation and characterisation of Entamoeba histolytica lipopeptidophosphoglycan

The parasite Entamoeba histolytica is the cause of amoebic dysentery and liver abscess in humans. On the protozoan cell surface, a variety of glycosylated molecules are involved in the interaction with the environment, such as attachment to the colonic mucus. One of these molecules is the lipopeptidophosphoglycan (LPPG), a complex surface component with antigenic properties. Its structure is only partly known, it is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked glycoprotein with a large amount of O-glycosylation. To date, the sequence of a core protein has not been identified. In this study, we further investigated this complex surface molecule aided by the availability of the monoclonal antibody EH5, which had been raised in our laboratory. We studied the extraction of LPPG in various solvent mixtures and discovered that 2-butanol saturated water was simple and superior to other solvents used in the past. The isolated LPPG was subjected to treatment with several proteases and the Ser/Thr specific cleavage agent scandium (III) trifluoromethanesulfonate (scandium triflate). The products were probed with antibody EH5 and the blots showed that the LPPG preparation was largely resistant to standard proteases, but could be cleaved by the scandium compound. These observations could point to the existence of a Ser- or Thr-rich core protein structure.

New insights on scandium separation from scandium concentrate with titanium dioxide wastewater

In this study, a scandium concentrate with Sc2O3 content of 66.24 g/t was obtained from V-Ti magnetite tailings by physical concentration, and the main Sc-bearing minerals were augite and hornblende. A novel process of roasting and leaching was proposed to extract scandium from scandium concentrate with titanium dioxide wastewater. Scandium concentrate was pretreated by roasting, and titanium dioxide wastewater was used to directly leach scandium from the roasted ore. The effects of roasting and leaching parameters such as roasting temperature, roasting time, roasting agents, leaching temperature, leaching time, liquid-to-solid ratio, and leaching agents on scandium separation were thoroughly researched in the experimental procedure. The results show that a scandium leaching efficiency of 85.89% was obtained, and the scandium content of leaching residue decreased to 9.31 g/t under the optimal conditions: a roasting temperature of 1123 K, a roasting time of 120 min, a leaching temperature of 343 K, a leaching time of 120 min, and a m (titanium dioxide wastewater)∶m (roasted ore)∶m (ammonium fluoride) ratio of 8∶1∶0.09. The main findings of the scandium separation mechanism show that Sc-bearing minerals can effectively decompose and release scandium element after roasting, and created favorable conditions for scandium leaching with titanium dioxide wastewater to achieve the purpose of scandium recovery.

Photo-induced scandium-catalyzed biomimetic skeleton conversion of lathyrane to naturally rare eupholathone Euphorbia diterpenes

The naturally scarce eupholathone-type euphornin E (1) was efficiently prepared from abundant lathyrane-type Euphorbia factor L1via a visible-light-induced Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed tandem process. Eupholathones 2 and 3 were also smoothly obtained by changing the reaction solvent. This route provides a convenient method for easily constructing scarce eupholathone- from lathyrane-type Euphorbia diterpenes, and confirms the biogenetic relationship between them from a chemical standpoint. Notably, compound 1 exhibited good anti-HIV activity.

Accelerator-Based Production of Scandium Radioisotopes for Applications in Prostate Cancer: Toward Building a Pipeline for Rapid Development of Novel Theranostics

In the field of nuclear medicine, the β+ -emitting 43Sc and β- -emitting 47Sc are promising candidates in cancer diagnosis and targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) due to their favorable decay schema and shared pharmacokinetics as a true theranostic pair. Additionally, scandium is a group-3 transition metal (like 177Lu) and exhibits affinity for DOTA-based chelators, which have been studied in depth, making the barrier to implementation lower for 43/47Sc than for other proposed true theranostics. Before 43/47Sc can see widespread pre-clinical evaluation, however, an accessible production methodology must be established and each isotope's radiolabeling and animal imaging capabilities studied with a widely utilized tracer. As such, a simple means of converting an 18 MeV biomedical cyclotron to support solid targets and produce 43Sc via the 42Ca(d,n)43Sc reaction has been devised, exhibiting reasonable yields. The NatTi(γ,p)47Sc reaction is also investigated along with the successful implementation of chemical separation and purification methods for 43/47Sc. The conjugation of 43/47Sc with PSMA-617 at specific activities of up to 8.94 MBq/nmol and the subsequent imaging of LNCaP-ENZaR tumor xenografts in mouse models with both 43/47Sc-PSMA-617 are also presented.

Comparison of micromorphological changes in enamel using SEM analysis after conventional and erbium, chromium:yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet hard-tissue laser fissurotomy: An in vitro study

Background

Well articulated by John Knowles - "Everything has to evolve or else it perishes." With the paradigm shift of emphasis toward the prevention of dental caries, it has been proven that laser irradiation protects against both caries initiation and caries progression.

Aim

The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the micromorphology of caries-free extracted premolars using a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) after fissurotomy by conventional fissurotomy bur and erbium, chromium: yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (ER, CR: YSGG) hard-tissue laser.

Methodology

Sixty caries-free premolars extracted atraumatically for orthodontic treatment were included in the study. The samples were divided into two groups randomly (Group 1: fissurotomy by bur, n = 30, and Group 2: fissurotomy by hard-tissue laser, n = 30). Each sample was further divided into halves from the occlusal surface wherein one-half of the occlusal surface received fissurotomy procedure and the other half was control. Samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for micromorphological changes.

Results

Profile image of control samples revealed the disorganization of enamel surface at the junction of fissures forming a heterogeneous tissue and agglomeration of enamel with deep pit and fissure. On the contrary, the image of experimented samples (with laser fissurotomy) showed smooth enamel surface and homogeneous enamel subsurface with wider pit and fissure owing to self-cleansing ability.

Conclusion

On the grounds of the present study results, it could be concluded that the intervention of ER, CR: YSGG hard-tissue laser possesses self-cleansable pit and fissures for caries prevention and has the potential to irradicate the smear layer entirely for superior attachment of remineralizing agents.

Erbium, chromium:Yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er, Cr:YSGG) laser versus diode laser in the treatment of pericoronitis

Background

There are limited number of studies about the lasers used for the treatment of pericoronitis infection.

Aim

To compare the Er, Cr:YSGG laser and diode laser applications clinically in the treatment of pericoronitis infection.

Patients and Methods

Sixty patients with pericoronitis infection were divided into three groups using block randomization: Er, Cr:YSGG + antibiotic group, n = 20 (mean age: 24.20 ± 6.13; 14 females, 6 males); diode group + antibiotic, n = 20 (mean age: 23.45 ± 2.96; 14 females, 6 males); and antibiotic, n = 20 (mean age: 22.45 ± 3.02; 11 females, 9 males). In addition, laser application was performed for patients in the Er, Cr:YSGG and diode laser groups on the 1st and 2nd days until the extraction day. Tooth extractions were performed on the 3rd day for all patients. Patients' pain (with visual analog scale [VAS]), lymphadenopathy, and local edema were clinically evaluated in the first 3 days and on the 7th day of treatment.

Results

Pain score on the 2nd day of treatment was determined to be significantly lower in the Er, Cr:YSGG + antibiotic laser group as compared with the other two groups (P = 0.019). Although regression of lymphadenopathy on the 3rd day was highest (P = 0.025) in the Er, Cr:YSGG group, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding local edema.

Conclusion

Er, Cr:YSGG laser improved the healing process in the treatment of pericoronitis and made an important contribution to the treatment.

Scandium, yttrium, and lanthanide occurrence in Cantharellus cibarius and C. minor mushrooms

There is a dearth of data on rare earth elements (REE), yttrium and scandium in foods which extends also to baseline datasets for edible wild mushrooms, though this has started to change in the last decade. Concentrations and shale normalized patterns of REE and Y (REY) were studied by using inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometer in 22 pools (2235 specimens) of Cantharellus cibarius (Golden Chanterelle) collected in Poland and also a pool of C. minor (Small Chanterelle) (153 specimens) from Yunnan (Chinese Province). The total REY plus Sc varied in C. cibarius from 10 to 593 µg kg^-1 dw whereas that for the Yunnan's C. minor was 2072 µg kg^-1 dw. C. minor from Yunnan has higher REY and Sc compared to the C. cibarius. Sc concentrations in twenty C. cibarius pools were below 1 µg kg^-1 dw, but 17 and 27 µg kg^-1 dw were detected at the other two sites and 66 µg kg^-1 dw was detected in C. minor. The median Y content of C. cibarius and C. minor was 22 µg kg^-1 dw and 200 µg kg^-1 dw. The difference in REY and Sc concentrations and shale normalized patterns between mushrooms from Poland and Yunnan seems to reflect the regional difference in concentration and composition of these elements in the soil bedrock.

Current State of 44Ti/44Sc Radionuclide Generator Systems and Separation Chemistry

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in 44Ti/44Sc generators as an onsite source of 44Sc for medical applications without needing a proximal cyclotron. The relatively short half-life (3.97 hours) and high positron branching ratio (94.3%) of 44Sc make it a viable candidate for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. This review discusses current 44Ti/44Sc generator designs, focusing on their chemistry, drawbacks, post-elution processing, and relevant preclinical studies of the 44Sc for potential PET radiopharmaceuticals.

Design and 3D FEM Analysis of a Flexible Piezoelectric Micromechanical Ultrasonic Transducer Based on Sc-Doped AlN Film

In this paper, a flexible piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT) based on Scandium (Sc)-doped Aluminum Nitride (AlN) film was designed and modeled by the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM). The resonant frequency of 218.1 kHz was reported. It was noticeable that a high effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (k²_eff) of 1.45% was obtained when a combination of a flexible PI and a thin Si layer was used as the PMUT supporting structure layer. Compared with a pure Si supporting layer counterpart, the coupling coefficient had been improved by 110.68%. Additionally, the increase of Sc doping concentration in AlN film further enhanced the device electromechanical coupling coefficient and resulted in an improvement for transmitting/receiving sensitivity of the proposed flexible PMUT. When the doping concentration of Sc reached 30%, the emission sensitivity was as large as 1.721 μm/V, which was 2.86 times greater than that of conventional AlN film-based PMUT. The receiving sensitivity was found to be 2.11 V/KPa, which was as high as 1.23 times the performance of an undoped device. Furthermore, the bending simulation result showed that the proposed flexible PMUT device can maintain a good mechanical stability when the bending radius is greater than 1.5 mm. The simulation of sound field characteristics demonstrated that the flexible PMUT based on AlScN could receive stable sound pressure signals under the bending radius of 1.5 cm.

Highly Efficient Luminescence from Charge-Transfer Gold Nanoclusters Enabled by Lewis Acid

Understanding the complicated intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behaviors of nanomaterials is crucial to the development of high-quality nanoluminophores for various applications. However, the ICT process in molecule-like metal nanoclusters has been rarely explored. Herein, a proton binding-induced enhanced ICT state is discovered in 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected gold nanoclusters (ATT-AuNCs). Such an excited-state electron transfer process gives rise to the weakened and red-shifted photoluminescence of these nanoclusters. By the joint use of this newfound ICT mechanism and a restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) strategy, a red shift in the emission maxima of 30 nm with 27.5-fold higher fluorescence quantum efficiency is achieved after introducing rare-earth scandium ion (Sc³⁺) into ATT-AuNCs. Furthermore, it is found that upon the addition of Sc³⁺, the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) rate from ATT-AuNCs to minocycline is largely accelerated by forming a donor-bridge-acceptor structure. This paper offers a simple method to modulate the luminescent properties of metal nanoclusters for the rational design of next-generation sensing platforms.

Effect of erbium family laser etching on shear bond strength of enamel surfaces: A meta-analysis-PRISMA

BACKGROUND

Recently, laser etching has appealed to people's attention. It is meaningful to compare the effect of erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium-chromium; yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSSG) laser etching parameters with acid etching on bond strength of enamel surfaces. As far as we know, there still remains no related meta-analysis. To evaluate the efficacy of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSSG lasers etching on shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to enamel. The meta-analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, conducted with literature search.

METHODS

Twelve relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included.

RESULTS

The pooled analysis of SBS showed that there were no significant differences between erbium family lasers and acid etching. In the mass, we noticed they did not achieve statistical significance in the lasers etching and acid etching. However, pooled analysis of 5 studies showed the SBS bonding to enamel was lower in Er,Cr:YAG laser group compared with acid group. As a whole, there were statistical significance between erbium lasers groups and acid etching group in adhesive remnant index (ARI) aspects, which less adhesives remained can reduce damage to enamel. With regard to the rate of teeth with ARI score ≤2, the results in Er:YAG laser etching group were obviously higher than acid etching group.

CONCLUSION

Our data indicated that erbium lasers may be considered bonding of brackets to enamel instead of acid etching bonding to enamel.

Trace and rare earth element bioaccumulation in the spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus stellaris)

Metals (trace elements and rare earth elements, REEs) were analysed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in blood, the liver, the kidney and muscle of ex situ spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus stellaris). The controlled environment in which these elasmobranchs were hosted allowed to assess a baseline level of metals in the different organs since exposure via water and food can be easily monitored. The highest arsenic, chromium, copper, and iron values were found in the liver, cobalt in the kidney, and cadmium and rubidium in muscle. The highest total trace elements content was found in the trend liver (75 mg kg^-1) > blood (33 mg kg^-1) > muscle (31 mg kg^-1) > kidney (10 mg kg^-1), while the ΣREEs was the liver (30 μg kg^-1) > muscle (15 μg kg^-1) > kidney (13 μg kg^-1) > blood (4.1 μg kg^-1). Between REEs, the most represented element was scandium. Significant differences in the concentration of metals among organs were observed for almost all elements. Nonessential elements were generally lower and essential elements higher in the examined specimens compared to wild elasmobranchs, suggesting a close relationship between a balanced diet and animal welfare.

Reconfigurable Compute-In-Memory on Field-Programmable Ferroelectric Diodes

The deluge of sensors and data generating devices has driven a paradigm shift in modern computing from arithmetic-logic centric to data-centric processing. Data-centric processing require innovations at the device level to enable novel compute-in-memory (CIM) operations. A key challenge in the construction of CIM architectures is the conflicting trade-off between the performance and their flexibility for various essential data operations. Here, we present a transistor-free CIM architecture that permits storage, search, and neural network operations on sub-50 nm thick Aluminum Scandium Nitride ferroelectric diodes (FeDs). Our circuit designs and devices can be directly integrated on top of Silicon microprocessors in a scalable process. By leveraging the field-programmability, nonvolatility, and nonlinearity of FeDs, search operations are demonstrated with a cell footprint <0.12 μm² when projected onto 45 nm node technology. We further demonstrate neural network operations with 4-bit operation using FeDs. Our results highlight FeDs as candidates for efficient and multifunctional CIM platforms.

Scandium Recovery from Aqueous Solution by Adsorption Processes in Low-Temperature-Activated Alumina Products

In this paper, we studied the scandium adsorption from aqueous solutions on the surface of low-temperature-activated alumina products (GDAH). The GDAH samples are industrially manufactured, coming from the Bayer production cycle of the Sierra Leone bauxite as aluminium hydroxide, and further, by drying, milling, classifying and thermally treating up to dehydroxilated alumina products at low temperature. All experiments related to hydroxide aluminium activation were conducted at temperature values of 260, 300 and 400 °C on samples having the following particle sizes: <10 µm, 20 µm, <45 µm and <150 µm, respectively. The low-temperature-activated alumina products were characterised, and the results were published in our previous papers. In this paper, we studied the scandium adsorption process on the above materials and related thermodynamic and kinetic studies.

A selective hydrometallurgical method for scandium recovery from a real red mud leachate: A comparative study

The aim of this study was to recover Sc as the main product and Fe as a by-product from Hungarian bauxite residue/red mud (RM) waste material by solvent extraction (SX). Moreover, a new technique was developed for the selective separation of Sc and Fe from real RM leachates. The presence of high Fe content (∼38%) in RM makes it difficult to recover Sc because of the similarity of their physicochemical properties. Pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods were applied to remove the Fe prior to SX. Two protocols based on organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) were proposed, and the main extractants were evaluated: bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA/P204) and tributyl phosphate (TBP). The results showed that SX using diethyl ether and tri-n-octylamine (N₂₃₅) was efficient in extracting Fe(III) from the HCl leachate as HFeC1₄. Over 97% of Sc was extracted by D2EHPA extractant under the following conditions; 0.05 mol/L of D2EHPA concentration, A/O phase ratio of 3:1, pH 0-1, 10 min of shaking time, and a temperature of 25 °C. Sc(OH)₃ as a precipitate was efficiently obtained by stripping from the D2EHPA organic phase by 2.5 mol/L of NaOH with a stripping efficiency of 95%. In the TBP system, 99% of Sc was extracted under the following conditions: 12.5% vol of TBP, an A/O phase ratio of 3:1, 10 min of shaking time, and a temperature of 25 °C. The Sc contained in the TBP organic phase could be efficiently stripped by 1 mol/L of HCl with a stripping efficiency of 92.85%.

Accumulation of scandium, cerium, europium, hafnium, and tantalum in oats and barley grown in soils that differ in their characteristics and level of contamination

Up to now, information about biogeochemistry of many trace elements is scarce. Meanwhile, all the elements are always present in soil and plants. It may be suggested that the trace elements also play certain role in the biogeochemical processes. The aim of the research was to study bioaccumulation of poorly investigated trace elements (scandium, cerium, europium, hafnium, and tantalum) and well-known elements (chromium, iron, cobalt, zinc, and arsenic) in two crops, oats and barley, and examine how these elements interact with each other as they absorbed by plants. The plants were grown in the soils that differed in their parameters and in level of contamination. Although oats and barley are botanically similar and were grown under the same conditions, the plants differed in the ability to accumulate many elements. The uptake of the elements by the plants also depended on type of soil. For example, concentrations of Cr, Fe, Co, As, Sc, Ce, Eu, Hf, and Ta in roots of the oats grown in slightly contaminated soil were much higher as compared to the concentrations of the elements in roots of the barley grown in the same soil. In leaves of the oats grown in moderately contaminated soil, the concentrations of Cr, As, Ce, Eu, and Ta were statistically significantly higher than those in leaves of the barley grown in the soil. In soils and in plants, relationships between elements were both similar and different. A statistically significant correlation was found between the poorly investigated trace elements and well-studied elements.

A holistic approach for the recovery of rare earth elements and scandium from secondary sources under a circular economy framework - A review

Limited natural resources and a continuous increase in the demand for modern technological products, is creating a demand and supply gap for rare earth elements (REEs) and Sc. There is therefore a need to adopt the sustainable approach of the circular economy system (CE). In this review, we defined six steps required to close the loop and recover REEs, using a holistic approach. Recent statistics on REEs and Sc demand and the number of waste generations are reported and studies on more environmentally friendly, economic, and/or efficient recovery processes are summarized. Pilot-scale recovery facilities are described for several types of secondary sources. Finally, we identify obstacles to closing the REE loop in a circular economy and the reasons why secondary sources are not preferred over primary sources. Briefly, recovery from secondary sources should be environmentally and economically friendly and of an acceptable standard concerning final product quality. However, current technologies for recovery from for secondary sources are limiting and technology needs will vary depending on the source type. The quality/purity of the recovered metals should be proven so that they do not result in any adverse effects on the product quality, when they are being used as secondary raw material. In addition, for industrial-scale facilities, process improvements are required that consider environmental conditions.

Scandium-microorganism interactions in new biotechnologies

Scandium (Sc) plays a special role in high-tech industries because of its wide application in green, space, and defense technologies. However, Sc mining and purification are problematic due to political, technological, and environmental difficulties. The deficit of this element limits global technological development. One sustainable solution to this problem is to use microorganisms to extract Sc from ore and waste, as well as to concentrate and separate it from other elements. Sc also demonstrates attractive metabolic effects on microbes that is of great interest in white biotechnology. Sc increases the production of proteins and secondary metabolites and activates poorly expressed genes. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of current knowledge on the application of Sc-microorganism interactions in promising biotechnologies, its perspectives, and future challenges.

The Synthesis and Structure of a Scandium Nitrate Hydroxy-Bridged Dimeric Complex Supported by Bipyridyl Ligands

The current discussion on whether scandium, yttrium and lanthanum should represent Group 3 in the Periodic Table or whether lutetium should replace lanthanum in the group has prompted us to further explore the structural chemistry of the Group 3 elements and compare the coordination numbers and coordination geometries adopted. The steric and electronic properties of the coordinated ligands have a major influence on the structures adopted. We report the synthesis and crystal structure determination of an unusual dinuclear scandium complex [(bipy)(NO₃)₂Sc(µ-OH)₂Sc(NO₃)₂(bipy)] obtained by the reaction of hydrated scandium nitrate with 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) in either ethanol or nitromethane. The crystal structure of the complex shows that the scandium centers are eight coordinate, and the structure obtained contrasts with related complexes found in the lanthanide series [Ln(bipy)₂(NO₃)₃] and [Ln(phen)₂(NO₃)₃] (phen = phenanthroline) and in [M(terpy)(NO₃)₃] (M = Sc, Er-Lu), where these complexes are all mononuclear.

Impact of scandium on mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, friction and wear performance, and cytotoxicity of a β-type Ti-24Nb-38Zr-2Mo alloy for orthopedic applications

β-type titanium (Ti) alloys have been extensively investigated as orthopedic implant materials due to their unique combination of low elastic modulus, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, friction and wear performance, and cytotoxicity of β-type Ti-24Nb-38Zr-2Mo (TNZM) and Ti-24Nb-38Zr-2Mo-0.1Sc (TNZMS) have been comparatively investigated for orthopedic applications. Cold-rolling (CR) and cold-rolling plus solution-treatment (CR+ST) were performed on the as-cast (AC) alloys and their microstructures and material properties were characterized. The impact of Sc addition on the mechanical and corrosion properties, friction and wear behavior, and in vitro cytocompatibility of the TNZMS alloy was assessed. The CR+ST TNZMS alloy exhibited the best combination of properties among all the alloy samples, with a yield strength of 780 MPa, ultimate strength of 809 MPa, elongation of 19%, Young's modulus of 65.4 GPa, and hardness of 265 HV. Electrochemical testing in Hanks' Solution indicated that the CR+ST TNZMS sample also showed the highest corrosion resistance with a corrosion potential of -0.234 V, corrosion current density of 0.07 µA/cm², and corrosion rate of 1.2 µm/y. Friction and wear testing revealed that the TNZMS alloy showed higher wear resistance compared to the TNZM alloy and the wear resistance of the different samples was ranked CR > CR+ST > AC. Finally, both the CR+ST TNZM and TNZMS showed no-cytotoxicity towards MG-63 cells and the TNZMS exhibited slightly higher cytocompatibility than the TNZM alloy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work reports the β-type Ti-24Nb-38Zr-2Mo (TNZM) and Ti-24Nb-38Zr-2Mo-0.1Sc (TNZMS) alloys fabricated by as-cast (AC), cold-rolling (CR), and cold-rolling plus solution-treatment (CR+ST) for potential orthopedic applications. The experimental results showed that the TNZMS alloy exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical, wear, and corrosion properties than those of TNZM alloy; and the CR+ST TNZMS possess a unique combination of the best mechanical and corrosion properties including a yield strength of 780 MPa, ultimate strength of 809 MPa, elongation of 19%, Young's modulus of 65.4 GPa, and corrosion rate of 1.2 µm/y in Hanks' Solution. Both the CR+ST TNZM and TNZMS alloys exhibited non-cytotoxicity towards MG-63 cells and TNZMS showed a higher cytocompatibility than that of TNZM.

Erbium, chromium-doped: yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet and diode lasers in the treatment of peri-implantitis: clinical and biochemical outcomes in a randomized-controlled clinical trial

This study aims to evaluate the effects of 940 nm diode laser and 2780 nm erbium, chromium-doped: yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser used in addition to mechanical therapy in the non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis on clinical parameters and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) levels in the peri-implant crevicular fluid. A total of 50 patients with peri-implantitis were randomized into three groups to receive peri-implant treatment. The control group (n = 17) only received conventional non-surgical mechanical therapy. The trial groups [(diode group (n = 16) and Er,Cr:YSGG group (n = 17)] received dental laser in addition to mechanical therapy. Gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing, probing depth (PD), MMP-9, and TIMP-1 levels were assessed at baseline (T0) and at 6 months after treatment (T1). The GI, PI, and PD significantly decreased in all groups at T1, compared to T0 (p < 0.05). The decrease in the PD was similar between the control and diode groups with Er,Cr:YSGG providing more reduction (1.16 ± 0.64 mm) than either method (p = 0.032). A significant intra-group decrease in MMP-9 level was only observed in the Er,Cr:YSGG group (p = 0.009). The decrease in TIMP-1 level from T0 to T1 was similar between the control and the diode groups (p > 0.05) and it was significantly lower than the decrease in the Er,Cr:YSGG group (p < 0.05). Addition of diode laser to non-surgical mechanical therapy does not provide any additional benefit for treatment outcomes. Synthesis and surface modification of magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles and its application in uptake of scandium (III) ions from aqueous media

The main objective of this work is to produce an eco-friendly and economically nano-adsorbent which can separate scandium metal ions Sc from a model aqueous phase prior to applying these adsorbents in industrial filed. The magnetic core-shell structure Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by modified Stöber method and functionalized with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane APTES as a coupling agent and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a ligand. Magnetic nano support adsorbents exhibit many attractive opportunities due to their easy removal and possibility of reusing. The ligand grafting was chemically robust and does not appreciably influence the morphology or the structure of the substrate. To evaluate the potential, the prepared hybrid nanoparticles were used as nano-adsorbent for Sc ions from model aqueous solutions due to the fact that rare earth elements (REEs) have a strong affinity for oxygen and nitrogen donors. The iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method at pH 10 and pH 11 to get the best morphology and nanoscale dimensions of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles. The particle size, morphology, specific surface area, and surface modification were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with average particle size of 15 ± 3 nm were successfully synthesized at pH 11, and 25 °C. Moreover, the prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles were coated with amorphous SiO2 and functionalized with amino and carboxyl groups. The adsorption study conditions of Sc are as follows: the initial concentrations of the Sc model solution varied 10-50 mg/L, 20 mL volume, 20-80 mg of the Fe3O4@SiO2-COO adsorbent, pH range of 1-5, and 5 h contact time at 25 °C temperature. The adsorption equilibrium was represented with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. Langmuir model was found to have the correlation coefficient value in good agreement with experimental results. However, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics.

Microbe-Encapsulated Silica Gel Biosorbents for Selective Extraction of Scandium from Coal Byproducts

Scandium (Sc) has great potential for use in aerospace and clean energy applications, but its supply is currently limited by a lack of commercially viable deposits and the environmental burden of its production. In this work, a biosorption-based flow-through process was developed for extraction of Sc from low-grade feedstocks. A microbe-encapsulated silica gel (MESG) biosorbent was synthesized through sol-gel encapsulation of Arthrobacter nicotianae, a bacterium that selectively adsorbs Sc. Microscopic imaging revealed a high cell loading and macroporous structure, which enabled rapid mass transport and adsorption/desorption of metal ions. The biosorbent displayed high Sc selectivity against lanthanides and major base metals, with the exception of Fe(III). Following pH adjustment to remove Fe(III) from an acid leachate prepared from lignite coal, a packed-bed column loaded with the MESG biosorbent exhibited near-complete Sc separation from lanthanides; the column eluate had a Sc enrichment factor of 10.9, with Sc constituting 96.4% of the total rare earth elements. The MESG biosorbent exhibited no significant degradation with regard to both adsorption capacity and physical structure after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles. Overall, our results suggest that the MESG biosorbent offers an effective and green alternative to conventional liquid-liquid extraction for Sc recovery.

Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy Analysis of Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet-treated Enamel Surfaces: An In Vitro Study

AIM AND OBJECTIVE

The present study evaluated the effects of erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser on the weight percentage of mineral content of enamel when etched at three different power settings.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Total 20 extracted molar teeth were taken as samples. Enamel slabs were prepared by sectioning the crown from the buccal and lingual aspect with a double-sided diamond disk at slow speed. The 40 specimens were divided into four groups, i.e., control, 1 W, 2 W, and 3 W of 10 specimens each and then irradiation by Er,Cr:YSGG was done. The elements evaluated were calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and phosphorus (P). The mean weights of these minerals and the Ca:P ratio in each slab were measured by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDAX). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Turkey's test was performed with the help of critical difference (CD) or least significant difference (LSD) at 5 and 1% level of significance.

RESULTS

There was no significant differences among the four groups for the five minerals and for the calcium:phosphorous ratio (p > 0.05). Photomicrographs by scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the surfaces exposed to a 3 watt irradiation showed more roughness than those of the 1 watt and 2 watt groups.

CONCLUSION

The Er,Cr:YSGG irradiation of enamel at 1 W, 2 W, and 3 W had no significant effect on the mean percentage weights of Ca, K, Mg, Na, and P or the Ca/P ratio in any group.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Constriction with conviction is the new motto of restorative dentistry. Er,Cr:YSGG not only fulfills the aim but also is proving to alter the surface properties by recrystallization and change in composition making the prepared surface caries resistant.

[Oncology PET radiopharmaceuticals in clinic and research in 2020]

"PET based" molecular imaging has significant role in personalized medicine. New radiopharmaceuticals are continuously introduced into the daily practice of detecting diseases and assessing the effectiveness of therapy. In recent years theragnostic applications have come to the forefront of radiopharmaceutical development. This article discusses, among others, radiopharmaceuticals labelled with 18F and 68Ga isotopes required for the diagnosis of neuroendocrine and prostate tumours, furthermore the inhibitors of the fibroblast activation protein. The increasing variety of metallic radioisotopes (44Sc, 64Cu, 52Mn, 86Y, 89Zr) will help meet the need for new biomarkers and will greatly facilitate the introduction of the new generation of PET radiopharmaceuticals.

Trend of the research on rare earth elements in environmental science

Rare earth elements (REEs) consist of 17 transition metals which are the 15 lanthanides and yttrium and scandium. These elements have great utility in the production of modern technology, especially electronics. However, these materials may pose a serious threat to the environment if handled or disposed of incorrectly; the effects of which are being studied by the field of environmental toxicology. A multitude of studies have indicated that rare earth elements have harmful impacts on biological life, making a reform to the disposal of rare earth elements increasingly pressing. Scientific interest in REEs is constantly rising due to the increased use of REEs due to their utility. In this paper, we display our meta-analysis of a scientific literature database, PubMed, to quantitatively map the temporal flux of research and interest pertaining to REEs, especially in the field of environmental science. Our findings may prove useful for planning research on REEs or predicting the future of REE usage.

Efficacy of Erbium, Chromium-doped Yttrium, Scandium, Gallium and Garnet Laser-activated Irrigation Compared with Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation, Conventional Irrigation, and Photodynamic Therapy against Enterococcus faecalis

AIM

To compare the antimicrobial effects of two different irrigation solutions activated with erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser or an ultrasonic system and a photodynamic therapy (PDT) on Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The root canals of 72 single-rooted human permanent incisors were prepared with ProTaper Universal rotary instruments and incubated with E. faecalis (ATCC 29212) for 4 weeks. Then the teeth were randomly divided into seven experimental groups with 10 specimens for canal disinfection procedures. Group I, standard needle irrigation (SNI) with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); group II, SNI with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX); group III, laser-activated irrigation (LAI) by Er,Cr:YSGG of NaOCl; group IV, LAI of CHX; and group V, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) of NaOCl; group VI, PUI of CHX; group VII, PDT. The remaining two teeth were used as the control group. After the disinfection procedures were completed, the root canals were filled with phosphate-buffered saline and bacterial samples were taken with sterile paper cones. The cultivation was performed on Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) plates. The live bacteria were calculated by counting the colonies on these plaques. The statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis H test and Miller's multiple comparison technique.

RESULTS

Both LAI and PUI of NaOCl and PUI of CHX were more successful than the PDT on root canal disinfection (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitation of the present study, the activation of NaOCl solution by Er,Cr:YSGG laser or an ultrasonic system can be useful in the elimination of the E. faecalis from the canal. The PUI of CHX also has similar results. Photodynamic therapy showed a lower performance compared to these methods.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The activation of the sodium hypochlorite with Er,Cr:YSGG laser or PUI may be useful for removal of the E. faecalis biofilm layer in the root canal.

Recovery of scandium from Canadian bauxite residue utilizing acid baking followed by water leaching

The current study put the emphasis on developing a novel and environmentally friendly waste valorization process, called "acid-baking water-leaching", to recover scandium from bauxite residue produced by the aluminum industry. In this process, bauxite residue is mixed with concentrated sulfuric acid, baked in a furnace at 200-400 °C, and leached in water at ambient conditions. Compared with direct acid leaching processes, the developed process offers the advantages of less acid consumption, less wastewater generation, and fast kinetics. With fundamental investigation into the reaction mechanism, acid baking temperature was shown to be the controlling factor that dictates the final phases of the process. Baking at 200 °C results in the formation of (H₃O)Fe(SO₄)₂ that leaches in water rapidly (<5 min), but extraction efficiency is low (58% scandium). In contrast, baking at 400 °C results in the formation of Fe₂(SO₄)₃ that leaches at slower kinetics (>45 min), but results in higher extraction efficiency (80% scandium). The acid baking water leaching process proves to be a promising technique as the first step of a potential near-zero-waste integrated process for the sustainable valorization of bauxite residue to help build the circular economy.

Efficacy of calcium hypoclorite with and without Er,Cr: Yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet laser activation on Enterococcus faecalis in experimentally infected root canals

AIM

The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)₂) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) associated with or without erbium, chromium: yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet (Er,Cr: YSGG) laser irradiation in root canals experimentally infected with Enterococcus faecalis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The root canals of 105 single-rooted premolars were enlarged up to file 40, autoclaved, inoculated with E. faecalis, and incubated for 21 days. The teeth were randomly divided into seven experimental (n = 15) groups according to the protocol for decontamination: syringe irrigation (SI) with distilled water (DW), SI with 2.5% NaOCl, SI with 2.5% Ca (OCl)₂, laser-activated irrigation (LAI) with DW, LAI with 2.5% NaOCl and LAI with 2.5% Ca (OCl)₂ and LAI with no solution. Microbiological samples were collected and the colony-forming units were counted before and after irrigation procedures and the percentages of reduction were calculated.

RESULTS

Mean numbers of recovered bacteria in the SI with DW group were significantly higher than those in the other experimental groups (P < 0.05). The high bactericidal reduction was observed in any of the other treatment groups: SI using NaOCl or Ca (OCl)₂ and LAI with DW, NaOCl, Ca (OCl)₂ or no solution, with no statistically significant difference.

CONCLUSION

Er,Cr: YSGG laser with or without an irrirgation solution has antimicrobial effects on dentinal tubules infected with E. faecalis. The antimicrobial property of 2.5% Ca (OCl)₂ was effective as 2.5% NaOCl on E. faecalis with conventional or laser activated irrigation in root canals.

Interdisciplinary Tasks in the Cyclotron Production of Radiometals for Medical Applications. The Case of 47Sc as Example

The growing number of cyclotrons of different sizes installed in the territory has given a strong impulse to the production of conventional and emerging radionuclides for medical applications. In particular, the great advantage of using medical cyclotrons is the possibility to produce on-site, when needed (on-demand), with medical radionuclides of interest encouraging the personalized medicine approach. Radiometals satisfy the ideal characteristics that radionuclides should have for routine employment in nuclear medicine, especially since they have a robust chemistry suitable to synthetize stable in vivo radiopharmaceuticals with high radiochemical yields. In this letter several interdisciplinary aspects involved in the radiometals cyclotron production cycle are summarized focusing the attention on cyclotron production facilities, target material, and chemical processing available for medical applications. As an example, the current status and recent development in the production of the theranostic radionuclide scandium-47 have been reported.

A high performance Sc-based nanoprobe for through-skull fluorescence imaging of brain vessels beyond 1500 nm

Optical bioimaging that works in the second near infrared region (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) has emerged as a next generation imaging technique with superior imaging sensitivity and spatial resolution compared to traditional optical imaging utilizing visible and near-infrared lights (below 900 nm). Herein, a new Sc-based NIR-II probe was explored for high performance NIR-II in vivo bioimaging and optical imaging-guided non-invasive brain blood vessel visualization. The lanthanide doped Sc-based probes (KSc2F7:Yb3+/Er3+) possess a pure orthorhombic phase structure with size control by adjusting the F- ion content. These probes present a dominant red upconversion (UC) emission, which is significantly different from the traditional NaYF4:Yb/Er host, which usually has a green UC emission. More importantly, apart from the dominant red UC emission, these probes also possess a strong NIR-II downconversion (DC) emission centered at 1525 nm, which is usually ignored for bioimaging applications. In vivo NIR-II imaging reveals that our explored Sc-based nanorods are promising probes for highly sensitive optical imaging. Moreover, non-invasive through-skull fluorescence bioimaging of brain vessels with high spatial resolution was demonstrated. Therefore, it is expected that Sc-based nanomaterials with unique dominant red UC and DC NIR-II emissions beyond 1500 nm are ideal probes for bio-applications.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Furfural Derivative 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran into Pentanediol Acetate and Pentanol Acetate over Pd/C and Sc(OTf)3 Cocatalytic System

It is of great significance to convert platform molecules and their derivatives into high value-added alcohols, which have multitudinous applications. This study concerns systematic conversion of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), which is obtained from furfural, into 1-pentanol acetate (PA) and 1,4-pentanediol acetate (PDA). Reaction parameters, such as the Lewis acid species, reaction temperature, and hydrogen pressure, were investigated in detail. ¹ H NMR spectroscopy and reaction dynamics study were also conducted to help clarify the reaction mechanism. Results suggested that cleavage of the primary alcohol acetate was less facile than that of the secondary alcohol acetate, with the main product being PA. A PA yield of 91.8 % (150 °C, 3 MPa H₂ , 30 min) was achieved by using Pd/C and Sc(OTf)₃ as a cocatalytic system and an 82 % yield of PDA was achieved (150 °C, 30 min) by using Sc(OTf)₃ catalyst. Simultaneously, the efficient conversion of acetic esters into alcohols by simple saponification was carried out and led to a good yield.

[PET radiopharmaceuticals: novelties and new possibilities]

18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) can be considered as the "work-horse" of PET/CT and PET/MR imaging modalities. FDG provides insight in the pathophysiology of tumors and metastases from the point of view of sugar consumption. On the other hand, amino acid metabolism, expression of various receptors in the cells or on the surface of the cells, angiogenesis, appearance of hypoxic cells/tissues and apoptosis also participate in the pathophysiological processes and may have importance in determining the treatment strategy for patients or in monitoring the chosen therapy. Many molecules involved can be labeled by (18)F radionuclide but certain metabolisms require (11)C-labelled agents. Molecular imaging is of key importance in cancer research and various metal complexes containing (44)Sc, (64)Cu, (68)Ga, (86)Y, (89)Zr positron emitters can be very useful in this activity.

Faraday isolator based on TSAG crystal for high power lasers

A Faraday isolator based on a new magneto-optical medium, TSAG (terbium scandium aluminum garnet) crystal, has been constructed and investigated experimentally. The device provides an isolation ratio of more than 30 dB at 500 W laser power. It is shown that this medium can be used in Faraday isolators for kilowatt-level laser powers.

Macrocyclic complexes of scandium radionuclides as precursors for diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals

The aim of this study was to evaluate new ligands which can be applied for labeling biomolecules with scandium radionuclides. Two radionuclides of scandium, (47)Sc and (44)Sc, are perspective radioisotopes for radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging. (47)Sc decays with a half-life of 3.35 days and a maximum β(-) energy of 600 keV and could be an alternative to carrier added (177)Lu radionuclide for targeted radionuclide therapy. Another scandium radionuclide (44)Sc (t(1/2) = 3.92 h) is an ideal β(+) emitter for PET diagnosis. It can be obtained as a daughter of the long-lived (44)Ti (t(1/2) = 60.4 y) from (44)Ti/(44)Sc generator. For complexation of scandium radionuclides macrocyclic ligands having a cavity size similar to Sc(3+) ionic radius were selected: 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA), 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7 triacetic acid (NOTA), 1,4,7-triazacyclodecane-1,4,7 triacetic acid and 1,4,7-triazacycloundecane triacetic acid, and analogs of NOTA with 10, 11 and 12 atoms of the carbon in the ring. Our results have shown that from the studied macrocyclic ligands studied DOTA is most efficient for binding scandium radionuclides (44)Sc and (47)Sc to biomolecules. The determined stability constant of Sc-DOTA complex logK = 27.0 is comparable with stability constants for Y(3+) and heaviest lanthanides but is higher than those for In(3+) and Ga(3+). Also (46)Sc-DOTATATE conjugate exhibits high stability in-vitro studies. The (13)C NMR studies have shown that Sc-DOTA like Lu-DOTA forms in solution complexes with eight-coordination geometry. The lipophilicity of Sc-DOTATATE is nearly identical to that of Lu-DOTATATE, which suggests similar receptor affinity of both radioconjugates.

Selective heteronuclear Hartmann-Hahn: a multiple-pulse sequence for selective magnetization transfer in the structural elucidation of "isotagged" oligosaccharides

A new selective heteronuclear Hartmann-Hahn (SHEHAHA) multiple-pulse mixing sequence is proposed for the solution structure elucidation of milligram amounts of peracetylated oligosaccharides in which the acetyl groups are enriched in carbon-13, so-called "isotags". SHEHAHA accomplishes exclusive in-phase magnetization transfer between the isotag carbonyl (13)C and the proximal proton on the sugar ring. Relayed transfer around the sugar rings by proton-proton TOCSY is suppressed, while the heteronuclear transfer from the labeled carbonyl carbon to the proximal ring proton is maintained. The sequence is broadband in the sense that all acetyl groups simultaneously give good signal transfer to their respective nearest proton neighbors. The (1)H-detected spectra have decent sensitivity and excellent resolution, giving patterns that unambiguously identify common structural subunits in human glycans. Peracetylated maltitol is shown as a test case of the method. Lineshapes are pure absorption, allowing facile measurement of vicinal proton-proton couplings. Linkage points can be deduced, and the 2D correlation spectra may be useful for more ambitious prediction algorithms and machine identification by a spectral database.

Tissue distribution of radioactivity following intranasal administration of radioactive microspheres

The aim of this study was to increase understanding of the kinetics of microparticle distribution and elimination following intranasal application. To do this we investigated the in-vivo distribution of radioactivity following intranasal instillation of scandium-46 labelled styrene-divinyl benzene 7-μm-diameter microspheres. Groups of BALB/c mice received 0.250 mg (47.5 kBq) particles suspended in either 50-μl or 10-μl volumes of phosphate buffered saline. The in-vivo distribution of radioactivity was influenced by the volume of liquid that was used to instil the microsphere suspension. Comparatively large (50 μl) administration vehicle volumes resulted in substantial bronchopulmonary deposition (∼ 50% of administered dose). Intranasal instillation of microspheres suspended in 10-μl volumes tended to restrict particle deposition initially to the nasal cavity. For both administration vehicle volumes tested, the radioactivity per unit mass of excised nasal-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) was found to be consistently elevated relative to other tissues. This corroborates the findings of other workers who have previously identified NALT as an active site of microparticle accumulation following intranasal application. Elimination via the alimentary canal was the principal fate of intranasally applied radiolabeled material. No significant concentration of radioactivity within excised gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) (Peyer's patches) was noted. At latter time points we observed, in mice that received the 50-μl volume particle suspension nasally, accumulation of potentially relevant quantities of radioactivity in the liver (0.3% after 576 h) and spleen (0.04% after 576 h). Thus, our data corroborate the notion that epithelial membranes in the lung are probably less exclusive to the entry of microparticulates into systemic compartments than are those mucosae in the gastrointestinal tract or nasopharynx. This effect may contribute to the effectiveness of pulmonary delivered antigen-loaded microparticles as humoral immunogens.

Q-shear transformation for MQMAS and STMAS NMR spectra

The multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MQMAS) and satellite-transition magic-angle spinning (STMAS) experiments refocus second-order quadrupolar broadening of half-integer quadrupolar spins in the form of two-dimensional experiments. Isotropic shearing is usually applied along the indirect dimension of the 2D spectra such that an isotropic projection free of anisotropic quadrupolar broadening can be obtained. An alternative shear transformation by a factor equal to the coherence level (quantum number) selected during the evolution period is proposed. Such a transformation eliminates chemical shift along the indirect dimension leaving only the second-order quadrupolar-induced shift and anisotropic broadening, and is expected to be particularly useful for disordered systems. This transformation, dubbed Q-shearing, can help avoid aliasing problems due to large chemical shift ranges and spinning sidebands. It can also be used as an intermediate step to the isotropic representation for expanding the spectral window of rotor-synchronized experiments.

Reducing hazardous material and environmental impact through recycling of scandium nanomaterial waste

The emerging use of scandium and the environmental impact from scandium-containing waste is a rising environmental and health concern. With the development of new materials in the last decade, toxicological studies on those new materials have also been increasing. An example of a process which employs scandium is the generation of metallic nitride fullerene nanomaterials. This process typically generates 99+% scandium waste, as only small amounts of scandium are actually incorporated into the target fullerene molecules. We demonstrate a safe method to recover the scandium content in the waste, reuse the recovered material and successfully demonstrate a comparable product distribution without detectable health and environmental concerns.

A mild and environmentally friendly scandium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate-catalyzed synthesis of bis(3'-indolyl)alkanes and bis(3'-indolyl)-1-deoxyalditols

Bis(3'-indolyl)alkanes and bis(3'-indolyl) derivatives containing a 1-deoxyalditol moiety were synthesized in the presence of 5 mol% of scandium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Sc(OTf)3] in CH3CN or EtOH-H2O mixture as a solvent from room temperature to 70 degrees C in good yields (78-97%).

Atmospheric deposition of V, Cr, and Ni since the late glacial: effects of climatic cycles, human impacts, and comparison with crustal abundances

Vanadium, Cr, and Ni accumulating in a Swiss peat bog since 12 370 14C yr B.P. have been measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after acid dissolution in a microwave autoclave. Strict quality control schemes were applied to guarantee the accuracy of the applied analytical methodology. The concentration gradients in the peat column and comparison with Pb indicate that V, Cr, and Ni are effectively immobile in the ombrotrophic section of the peat profile but that Ni is added to the minerotrophic peat layers by chemical weathering of the underlying sediments. The lowest metal concentrations were found during the Holocene climate optimum (5320-8230 14C yr B.P.) when "natural background" values averaged 0.55 +/- 0.13 microg g(-1) V, 0.76 +/- 0.17 microg g(-1) Cr, and 0.46 +/- 0.09 microg g(-1) Ni (n = 18); given the average bulk density (0.05 g/cm3) and accumulation rate (0.05 cm/ yr) of peat in this zone, the corresponding atmospheric fluxes are approximately 14, 19, and 12 microg m(-2) yr(-1) for V, Cr, and Ni, respectively. The highest concentrations of V, Cr, and Ni were found during the Younger Dryas cold climate event (centered at 10 590 14C yr B.P.) when background values were exceeded by about 40 times. Elevated concentrations and accumulation rates were also found at 8230 and 5320 14C yr B.P., which are consistent with the elevated dust fluxes recorded by Greenland ice cores. By far the greatest contribution of the three elements to the peat inventory is atmospheric soil dust, and the metal fluxes vary not only with climate change but also land-use history (especially the beginning of forest clearing for agriculture ca. 6 millennia ago). The V/Sc, Cr/Sc, and Ni/ Sc ratios were remarkably similar to their corresponding ratios in the earth's crust until the onset of the Industrial Revolution (240 14C yr B.P.), which largely validates the use of crustal concentrations for calculating enrichment factors (EF) for these elements. In modern samples, the EFs of V, Cr, and Ni reach maximum values between 2.4 and 4.1, relative to background; anthropogenic emissions are a more likely explanation of the elevated EFs than either plant uptake or chemical diagenesis. This study demonstrates the usefulness of peat bogs as archives of atmospheric metal deposition and underpins the potential of peat cores to help distinguish between lithogenic and anthropogenic metal sources.

Chromium-scandium multilayer mirrors for the nitrogen K(alpha) line in the water window region

Chromium-scandium (Cr-Sc) is a promising material combination for multilayer mirrors in the water window region. A possible x-ray source for laboratory use in this wavelength range is the nitrogen K(alpha) line at 3.16 nm. High reflectivities at this wavelength can be achieved with Cr-Sc multilayer mirrors if the interfaces between adjacent layers are smooth. The growth parameters of the magnetron sputtering process for these materials have been optimized. It is shown that the reflectivity of such mirrors can be considerably improved by the application of a proper bias voltage during film growth. The high quality of the multilayer films is demonstrated with copper K(alpha) x-ray reflection and transmission electron microscopy. The reflective properties of the multilayers close to the nitrogen K(alpha) line were measured with synchrotron radiation for different angles of incidence. Reflectivities between R = 5.9% for near-normal incidence (theta = 1.5 degrees) and R = 29.6% for theta = 59.9 degrees were measured.

Non-invasive quantification of liver perfusion with dynamic computed tomography and a dual-input one-compartmental model

Various liver diseases lead to significant alterations of the hepatic microcirculation. Therefore, quantification of hepatic perfusion has the potential to improve the assessment and management of liver diseases. Most methods used to quantify liver perfusion are invasive or controversial. This paper describes and validates a non-invasive method for the quantification of liver perfusion using computed tomography (CT). Dynamic single-section CT of the liver was performed after intravenous bolus administration of a low-molecular-mass iodinated contrast agent. Hepatic, aortic and portal-venous time-density curves were fitted with a dual-input one-compartmental model to calculate liver perfusion. Validation studies consisted of simultaneous measurements of hepatic perfusion with CT and with radiolabelled microspheres in rabbits at rest and after adenosine infusion. The feasibility and reproducibility of the CT method in humans was assessed by three observers in 10 patients without liver disease. In rabbits, significant correlations were observed between perfusion measurements obtained with CT and with microspheres (r=0.92 for total liver perfusion, r=0.81 for arterial perfusion and r=0.85 for portal perfusion). In patients, total liver plasma perfusion measured with CT was 112+/-28 ml.min(-1).100 ml(-1), arterial plasma perfusion was 18+/-12 ml.min(-1).100 ml(-1) and portal plasma perfusion was 93+/-31 ml.min(-1).100 ml(-1). The measurements obtained by the three observers were not significantly different from each other (P>0.1). Our results indicate that dynamic CT combined with a dual-input one-compartmental model provides a valid and reliable method for the non-invasive quantification of perfusion in the normal liver.

Temporal patterns of colonic blood flow and tissue damage in an animal model of colitis

This study tested the hypothesis that altered colonic blood flow may contribute to tissue damage during the development of colitis in the rabbit. This was achieved by using radioactive microspheres to measure colonic blood flow at various times after colitis induction with trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. Significant colonic damage occurred 6 hours post colitis induction and persisted throughout the 5 day study. Blood flow to the muscularis propria and mucosa/muscularis mucosae compartments increased significantly from 5 minutes until one hour post induction. At 6 and 12 hours post induction colonic blood flow returned to control levels before increasing again from 24 to 96 hours. This second increase in flow was, however, predominantly in the mucosa/muscularis mucosae compartment. Blood flow in the stomach and non-gastrointestinal tissues did not change significantly at any time. These data demonstrate that increased colonic blood flow may be disrupted in the early stages of colitis and that this coincides with the onset of significant damage. It is concluded that maintenance of elevated colonic blood flow throughout the development of colitis may help to ameliorate subsequent tissue injury.

Pulpal thermal responses to an erbium,chromium: YSGG pulsed laser hydrokinetic system

PROBLEM

Laser systems are known to raise pulpal temperatures when applied to tooth surfaces. Dental biocalcified tissues can be cut with an erbium,chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet laser-powered hydrokinetic system. This device is effective for caries removal and cavity preparation in vitro. Pulpal monitoring of temperature changes during hard tissue cutting by a hydrokinetic system have not been reported.

OBJECTIVES

This study compared the effects of hydrokinetic system, dry bur, and wet bur tooth cutting on pulpal temperature.

STUDY DESIGN

In vivo thermocouple intrapulpal measurements were made on cuspid teeth in anesthetized beagle dogs. In vitro measurements were made on extracted human molar teeth preserved in high-salt solution and later rinsed in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) to simulate in vivo conditions. The hydrokinetic system was compared with conventional air-turbine-powered bur cutting. The hydrokinetic system cuts and bur preparations were randomly made on the buccal surfaces at the cervical one third of the crown and extended until exposure of the pulp was confirmed clinically.

RESULTS

Pulpal temperatures associated with the hydrokinetic system either showed no change or decreased by up to 2 degrees C. Wet bur preparations resulted in a 3 degrees to 4 degrees C rise. With dry bur preparations, a 14 degrees C rise in temperature was recorded.

CONCLUSIONS

Under the conditions of this study, the erbium,chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet laser-powered hydrokinetic system, when used for cavity preparation, had no apparent adverse thermal effect as measured in the pulp space.

Radionuclide development at BNL for nuclear medicine therapy

Radionuclides with medium energy beta emission and a several day half-life have often been viewed as attractive candidates for radioimmunotherapy. Among the most promising in this category are 47Sc, 67Cu, 153Sm, 188Re, and 199Au. The production of 67Cu, 153Sm, 199Au at BNL is summarized and the development of the latest candidate for this application, 47Sc, is described in detail. We also summarize the development of another important therapeutic radionuclide, 117mSn for bone pain palliation.

Pulpal response to cavity preparation by an erbium, chromium:YSGG laser-powered hydrokinetic system

The near red-pulsed erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet laser hydrokinetic system, or Er,Cr:YSGG laser HKS, is effective in cutting dental hard tissues. In this longitudinal study, the authors studied the continuously erupting open-apex incisors of New Zealand albino rabbits and the constricted apex teeth of beagles to determine the effects of HKS-produced lesions at various energy levels and of preparations produced by a tapered fissure bur on dental pulp. No pulpal inflammatory responses could be identified either immediately or 30 days after surgery in HKS preparations that removed enamel and dentin without pulp exposure.
