Abstract
PURPOSE Pain management for patients who have undergone a craniotomy remains challenging. This study aimed to determine whether intraoperative dexmedetomidine could reduce postoperative pain, analgesic consumption, and possible adverse events in patients after craniotomy. METHODS Eighty patients scheduled for elective supratentorial craniotomy under sevoflurane-fentanyl anesthesia were randomly allocated into two equal groups, to receive a continuous dexmedetomidine infusion of 0.5 µg/kg/h or placebo, beginning after induction and continuing until the start of skin closure. Intravenous tramadol (0.5 mg/kg) was administered to achieve an 11-point verbal rating scale (a discrete 0-10 scale) score of 4 or less in the postanesthesia care unit and, thereafter, on the ward. Pain scores, tramadol consumption, sedation scores, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) scores, and other adverse events were recorded in the first 24 hours postoperatively. FINDINGS Seventy-six patients were included in the analyses. Demographic data, surgical characteristics, and sedation levels were similar between the groups. Dexmedetomidine reduced pain scores (30 minutes, P = 0.041; 2 hours, P = 0.021) and tramadol consumption (0-2 hours, P = 0.043; 0-6 hours, P = 0.006; 0-12 hours, P = 0.023; 0-24 hours, P = 0.040) postoperatively. Dexmedetomidine also reduced PONV scores at 20, 60, 90, 120, and 240 minutes (P = 0.038, 0.022, 0.018, 0.037, 0.016, respectively). The dexmedetomidine group exhibited fewer PONV events that required treatment (P = 0.005). IMPLICATIONS Intraoperative dexmedetomidine infusion was effective for reducing pain and analgesic consumption after craniotomy. In addition, dexmedetomidine may help to reduce PONV in patients after craniotomy treated with tramadol postoperatively. Chinese Clinical Trial Register identifier: ChiCTR-TRC-13003598.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Helicobacter pylori infection appears to be a protective factor for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, H. pylori is associated with the subtype of esophageal carcinoma, and long-term proton-pump inhibition usage would cause gastric atrophy in patients with persistent H. pylori infection, which is a precancerous lesion. The relationship between H. pylori infection and GERD is still unclear. We aimed to confirm whether the eradication of H. pylori would worsen or improve symptomatic or endoscopic GERD. METHODS A systematic review of the published data was undertaken, and a meta-analysis was performed to determine the effect of H. pylori eradication on the occurrence of symptomatic (heartburn, acid regurgitation) and endoscopically proven erosive (esophagitis) GERD in patients with or without pre-existing GERD. RESULTS A total of 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and thus were included in the meta-analysis. There was no significant difference in the frequency of symptomatic or endoscopically proven erosive GERD after the eradication between patients with H. pylori eradicated and those with persistent infection, regardless of follow-up period, location, or the baseline disease. CONCLUSION H. pylori eradication does not aggravate the clinical outcomes in terms of short-term and long-term posteradication occurrence of GERD. There is no association between H. pylori eradication and the development of GERD in the patients with different diseases, even those with GERD.

Abstract
Gene expression is regulated at the transcription and translation levels; thus, both transcription factors (TFs) and microRNAs (miRNA) play roles in regulation of gene expression. This study profiled differentially expressed mRNAs and miRNAs in gastric cancer tissues to construct a TF and miRNA co-regulatory network in order to identify altered genes in gastric cancer progression. A total of 70 cases gastric cancer and paired adjacent normal tissues were subjected to cDNA and miRNA microarray analyses. We obtained 887 up-regulated and 93 down-regulated genes and 41 down-regulated and 4 up-regulated miRNAs in gastric cancer tissues. Using the Transcriptional Regulatory Element Database, we obtained 105 genes that are regulated by the E2F family of genes and using Targetscan, miRanda, miRDB and miRWalk tools, we predicted potential targeting genes of these 45 miRNAs. We then built up the E2F-related TF and miRNA co-regulatory gene network and identified 9 hub-genes. Furthermore, we found that levels of E2F1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 mRNAs associated with gastric cancer cell invasion capacity, and has associated with tumor differentiation. These data showed Overexpression of E2F mRNAs associated with gastric cancer progression.

Abstract
MicroRNA (miRNA) expression is deregulated in many types of human cancers, including thyroid cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate miRNA deregulation in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), particularly with lymph node (LN) metastasis. To identify the miRNA signature in PTC with LN metastasis, miRNAs isolated from PTC patients with LN metastasis (n = 3) and without LN (NLN) metastasis (n = 3) were used for microarray analysis. Four differentially expressed miRNAs including miR-2861, miR-451, miR-193b, and miR-1202 were selected for further validation between the LN group (n = 51) and the NLN group (n = 36) using real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The miRNA microarray results showed that compared to the NLN group, upregulation of four miRNAs including miR-2861, miR-451, miR-193b, and miR-1202 was associated with LN metastasis, whereas four other miRNAs including miR-let-7i, miR-542-5p, miR-664*, and miR-564 were downregulated in the LN group. In the validation cohort, the expression of either miR-2861 or miR-451 in the LN group was significantly greater than that in the NLN group (P = 0.004 and 0.026, respectively). Furthermore, the expression levels of miR-2861 and miR-451 in lateral lymph node (LLN) metastasis were significantly greater than those in central lymph node (CLN) metastasis (P = 0.007 and 0.001, respectively). Upregulated expression of miR-2861 and miR-451 in PTC with LN metastasis represents a unique miRNA signature associated with the prognosis and progression of PTC.

Abstract
Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is associated with the development of Th2 responses. This study examined the potential role of IL-33 in the pathogenic process of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in Chinese patients. The levels of serum IL-33 and sST2 in 154 patients with CHC, 24 with spontaneously resolved HCV (SR-HCV) infection and 20 healthy controls (HC), were analyzed by ELISA. The concentrations of serum IL-2, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10, HCV loads, ALT, AST, and HCV-Ab were measured. We found that the levels of serum IL-33 in CHC patients were significantly higher than those of SR-HCV and HC but decreased after treatment with interferon for 12 weeks. More importantly, the levels of serum IL-33 were correlated with the concentrations of ALT and AST in CHC patients. The levels of serum sST2, as a decoy receptor of IL-33, were significantly higher in CHC and SR-CHC patients than those in HC, and there was no correlation between the levels of serum sST2 and IL-33. The concentrations of serum IFN-γ and IL-6 in CHC patients were significantly lower than those of SR-HCV. These data suggest that IL-33 may be a pathogenic factor contributing to CHC-related liver injury.

Abstract
With a steep increase in the incidence of type 1 and 2 diabetes globally, diabetic nephropathy (DN) has now become the leading cause of renal failure in the world. There are no suitable biomarkers for the diagnosis of early stages of DN. In recent years, tremendous efforts are being made worldwide to delineate the role of micro RNAs in the pathogenesis of DN. Circulating miRNAs in serum, plasma, urine and other body fluids, which reflect a response to various pathophysiological stresses, are being investigated in the context of diabetic nephropathy. Delineation of the changes in miRNA levels in patients with DN may lead to a better understanding of the progression of the disease. We present here an exhaustive survey of the miRNA literature, highlighting various studies performed over the last decade. The aim is to assess if changes in various miRNAs could correlate with the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Based on the survey, we found that miRNA-377, miRNA-192, miRNA-216/217 and miRNA-144 are increased in body fluids of patients with DN, while miRNA-21 and miRNA-375 are decreased. Overall, there are a very few miRNAs that are kidney specific, and although significant differences were observed in the urinary excretion of certain miRNAs, they were not correlative to their levels in the blood or plasma. Thus, it is completely plausible that urine-specific miRNAs could serve as novel biomarkers for the diagnosis of early stages of diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many studies have indicated the prognostic and clinicopathological value of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients still remains controversial. Thus we performed this study to clarify the relationship between high ALDH1 expression in CRC and its impact on survival and clinicopathological features. METHODS Publications for relevant studies in Pubmed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) through April 2015 were identified. Only articles describing ALDH1 antigen with immunohistochemistry in CRC were included. The software RevMan 5.1 was used to analyze the outcomes, including 5-year overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and clinicopathological features. RESULTS 9 studies with 1203 patients satisfying the criteria were included. The overall rate of high ALDH1 expression was 46.5% by immunohistochemical staining. High ALDH1 expression as an independent prognostic factor was significantly associated with the 5-year OS and DFS (OR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.26-0.68, P = 0.0004; OR = 0.38, 95%CI: 0.24-0.59, P < 0.0001, respectively). High ALDH1 expression was highly correlated with the tumor (T) stage (T3 + T4 vs. T1 + T2; OR = 2.16, 95%CI: 1.09-4.28, P = 0.03), lymph node (N) stage (N1 + N2 vs. N0; OR = 1.8; 95%CI: 1.17-2.79, P = 0.008), and tumor differentiation (G3 vs. G1 + G2; OR = 1.88; 95%CI: 1.07-3.30, P = 0.03). However, high ALDH1 expression was not significantly correlated with the patient age (>60 years old vs. <60 years old; OR = 1.11, 95%CI: 0.63-1.94, P = 0.72). CONCLUSIONS High ALDH1 expression indicates a poor prognosis in CRC patients. Moreover, high ALDH1 expression correlates with the T stage, N stage, and tumor differentiation, but not with age.

Abstract
Changes in filamin A (FLNa) expression contribute to the development and progression of numerous malignancies. However, in vitro studies of breast cancer have shown conflicting results. Thus, the present study aimed to detect the expression of FLNa in breast cancer tissue samples and the association with clinicopathological data, in order to provide insightful ex vivo data. A total of 96 breast cancer and distant normal breast tissues and 20 benign tumor tissue specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry or reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of FLNa expression. Clinicopathological data were collected to analyze the association with FLNa expression. The FLNa protein was overexpressed in breast cancer tissues compared with distant normal mammary gland and benign breast tissues. The FLNa protein was expressed in 63.5% of breast cancer, with positive rates of 36, 66.7 and 84.6%, respectively, in stage I, II and III breast cancer patients (P<0.05). Overexpression of the FLNa protein was associated with advanced stage, lymph node metastasis, vascular or neural invasion, menstruation state and other risk stratifications for breast cancer. The overexpression of FLNa in breast cancer was validated by RT-PCR, indicating transcriptional regulation of FLNa overexpression in breast cancer. FLNa mRNA and protein were overexpressed in breast cancer tissues, which was associated with advanced stage, lymph node metastasis and vascular or neural invasion of breast cancer, suggesting that FLNa contributes to breast cancer development and progression.

Abstract
Tissue hypoxia induces reprogramming of cell metabolism and may result in normal cell transformation and cancer progression. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), the key transcription factor, plays an important role in gastric cancer development and progression. This study aimed to investigate the underlying regulatory signaling pathway in gastric cancer using gastric cancer tissue specimens. The integration of gene expression profile and transcriptional regulatory element database (TRED) was pursued to identify HIF-1α ↔ NFκB1 → BRCA1 → STAT3 ← STAT1 gene pathways and their regulated genes. The data showed that there were 82 differentially expressed genes that could be regulated by these five transcription factors in gastric cancer tissues and these genes formed 95 regulation modes, among which seven genes (MMP1, TIMP1, TLR2, FCGR3A, IRF1, FAS, and TFF3) were hub molecules that are regulated at least by two of these five transcription factors simultaneously and were associated with hypoxia, inflammation, and immune disorder. Real-Time PCR and western blot showed increasing of HIF-1α in mRNA and protein levels as well as TIMP1, TFF3 in mRNA levels in gastric cancer tissues. The data are the first study to demonstrate HIF-1α-regulated transcription factors and their corresponding network genes in gastric cancer. Further study with a larger sample size and more functional experiments is needed to confirm these data and then translate into clinical biomarker discovery and treatment strategy for gastric cancer.

Abstract
Probiotics are efficacious in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. However, the precise mechanisms remain unknown. To determine whether probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) ameliorates colonic epithelial barrier dysfunction present in interleukin-10 knockout (IL-10⁻(/)⁻) mice, IL-10⁻(/)⁻ and wild-type mice received LP or the vehicle for 4 wk. Colitis was assessed by histological scores and clinical manifestation, and gut paracellular permeability was measured by Ussing chamber. Oligopeptide transporter 1 (PepT1)-mediated transepithelial transport was evaluated by measuring the plasma cephalexin concentration. The expression and distribution of apical junctional complex (AJC) proteins and PepT1 were determined by Western blotting and immunofluorescence and their mRNA by reverse transcriptase-PCR. Spontaneous colitis was observed in all IL-10⁻(/)⁻ mice in which paracellular permeability was increased, in conjunction with decreased expression and redistribution of zonula occludens-1, occludin, claudin-1, and β-catenin. PepT1 expression was increased, accompanied with an enhanced cephalexin transport. Colonic epithelial barrier dysfunction was further confirmed by increased bacterial translocation and proinflammatory cytokine production. Treatment with LP decreased colonic paracellular permeability with restoration of expression and distribution of AJC proteins and partially prevented PepT1 expression and cephalexin transport in IL-10⁻(/)⁻ mice. Moreover, treatment with LP also prevented bacterial translocation and proinflammatory cytokine production in IL-10⁻(/)⁻ mice. Results from this study indicated that treatment with LP may ameliorate colonic epithelial barrier dysfunction in IL-10⁻(/)⁻ mice, by modulating the AJC- and PepT1-mediated transepithelial transport.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to estimate the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in men with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) by conducting a meta-analysis. METHODS Relevant publications were searched using PubMed, Embase, CBM, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP and Wanfang databases up to August 2015. Studies that reported the prevalence of erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and total sexual dysfunction in men with CP/CPPS were included. RESULTS A total of 24 studies involving 11,189 men were included. Overall prevalence of sexual dysfunction in men with CP/CPPS was 0.62 (95 % CI 0.48-0.75), while the prevalence of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation was 0.29 (95 % CI 0.24-0.33) and 0.40 (95 % CI 0.30-0.50), respectively. From 1999 to 2010, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation was 0.65 (95 % CI 0.45-0.83), 0.27 (95 % CI 0.22-0.33) and 0.41 (95 % CI 0.27-0.55), respectively. From 2011 to 2014, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation was 0.50 (95 % CI 0.22-0.75), 0.35 (95 % CI 0.29- 0.40) and 0.39 (95 % CI 0.37-0.41), respectively. CONCLUSION The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in men with CP/CPPS was high, even though overall sexual dysfunction demonstrated a slightly decreasing trend. Furthermore, erectile dysfunction prevalence rate had an increasing trend in recent years. More prospective studies are needed to evaluate sexual dysfunction improvement with better management of CP/CPPS.

Abstract
AIMS Non-diabetic renal diseases (NDRDs) are associated with better renal outcomes than diabetic nephropathy (DN). This study was conducted to determine the common clinical markers predicting NDRDs in type 2 diabetes patients. METHODS Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent a renal biopsy were screened. Eligible patients were categorized into two groups: DN group and NDRD group. Patient's clinical characteristics and laboratory data were collected. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for NDRD development, and the diagnostic performance of these variables was evaluated. RESULTS The study included 248 patients, 96 (38.71%) in the DN group and 152 (61.29%) in the NDRD group. Patients in the NDRD group had a shorter duration of DM and higher hemoglobin, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and urine osmotic pressure values as well as a higher incidence of glomerular hematuria than patients in the DN group. In the NDRD patients, the most common pathological type was membranous nephropathy (55, 36.18%). Absence of retinopathy (OR, 44.696, 95% CI, 15.91-125.566), glomerular hematuria (OR, 9.587, 95% CI, 2.027-45.333), and DM history ⩽5years (OR, 4.636, 95% CI, 1.721-12.486) were significant and independent risk factors for the development of NDRD (P<0.01). Absence of retinopathy achieved the overall highest diagnostic efficiency with a sensitivity of 92.11% and specificity of 82.29%. Glomerular hematuria had the highest specificity (93.75%). CONCLUSION Shorter duration of diabetes (⩽5years), absence of retinopathy, and presence of glomerular hematuria were independent indicators associated with NDRDs, indicating the need for renal biopsy.

Abstract
Objectives: Good maternal health and fetal development require sufficient and good quality of sleep during pregnancy. This study investigated sleep duration and quality in pregnant women, assessing factors with possibly influence on sleep. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on pregnant women between June and August in 2015 in 16 hospitals in five provinces in China. A total of 2345 pregnant women aged 18 years and older were surveyed. Insufficient sleeping duration was defined as sleeping of less than 7 h per day. Excessive sleep duration was defined as sleeping of more than 9 h per day. Results: A total of 561 (23.9%) participants reported insufficient sleeping duration, whereas 485 (20.9%) claimed excessive sleep duration. A total of 358 (15.2%) of pregnant women reported problems regarding sleep quality. Compared to pregnant women with sufficient sleeping duration, those with insufficient sleeping duration were prone to have poor sleep quality, whereas those with excessive sleeping duration featured low possibility of poor sleep quality. High-risk groups of insufficient sleep duration include women of Han nationality, with siblings, in their first trimester of pregnancy, receiving care in low-capacity/quality hospital settings, and with daily or 1-3 days of secondhand smoke exposure. High-risk groups of excessive sleep duration include women living in rural areas, unemployed, in their third trimester of pregnancy, and receiving care in medium-capacity/quality hospital settings. High-risk groups of poor sleep quality include women of non-Han nationality, low income level, in their third trimester of pregnancy, and with insufficient sleep duration. Conclusions: Insufficient/excessive sleep duration and poor sleep quality commonly occur during pregnancy in China. Findings provide a better understanding of the influencing factors of insufficient/excessive sleep duration and poor quality of sleep. These findings have some implications for future interventions on sleep among pregnant women.

Abstract
PURPOSE Programmed death 1 (PD-1) receptor and its ligand, programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1), play critical roles in the immune invasion of various tumors. This study aimed to explore the clinical significance of PD-L1/PD-1 expression in the progression of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). METHODS The expression of PD-L1 and PD-1 in 80 patients diagnosed with PNETs were investigated. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 80 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from PNETs and 20 corresponding cancer-adjacent tissue specimens. RESULTS Tissues from PNETs had higher levels of PD-L1 (58.8%) and PD-1 (51.3%) compared to the cancer-adjacent tissues (25% and 20%, respectively). Meanwhile, PD-L1 expression was associated with PD-1 expression (P=0.007). PD-L1 expression was significantly associated with histological type (P=0.014) and tumor stage (P=0.014). Univariate analyses showed that the overall survival time of PNETs patients was significantly associated with PD-L1 expression in cancer cells (P=0.003), PD-1 expression in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (P=0.001), tumor node metastasis stage (P<0.05), and distant metastasis (P<0.001). Additionally, multivariate analysis revealed that PD-L1 expression, PD1 expression, and distant metastasis of PNETs were independently associated with survival time. Moreover, Kaplan-Meier survival curves analysis revealed that patients with negative PD-L1 and PD-1 expression had better prognoses. CONCLUSION Data suggested that PD-L1 and PD-1 can be useful prognostic biomarkers for survival and can pave the way toward new immunotherapy regimens against PNETs through targeting the PD-L1/PD-1 pathway.

Abstract
UNLABELLED AIMS. Interleukin-37 (IL-37) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine. This study aims to investigate the concentrations of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-37 in patients with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). METHODS The levels of plasma and CSF IL-37, IL-17A, IFN- γ , and TNF- α in 25 GBS patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) were determined by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay and flow cytometric bead array assay, respectively. The values of clinical parameters in the patients were also measured. RESULTS The concentrations of plasma IL-37, IL-17A, IFN- γ , and TNF- α and CSF IL-37 and IL-17A in patients at the acute phase of GBS were significantly higher than those in the HC. The levels of plasma IL-37, IL-17A, IFN- γ , and TNF- α were positively correlated in those patients, and the levels of CSF IL-37 and IL-17A as well as the levels of plasma TNF- α were correlated positively with the GBS disability scale scores (GDSs) in those patients. Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin significantly reduced the levels of plasma IL-37, IL-17A, IFN- γ , and TNF- α in the drug-responding patients. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate higher levels of plasma and CSF IL-37 and IL-17A and other proinflammatory cytokines in patients with GBS.

Abstract
Estradiol (E2) promotes metastatic propensity. However, the detailed mechanism remains largely unknown. E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9 play a dominant role in the metastatic process. We aimed to investigate the effects of E2 on metastatic potential of PTC cell line BCPAP and on E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9 protein expression. PTC cell line BCPAP was evaluated for the presence of estrogen receptor (ER) by western blot analysis. The effects of E2, PPT (a potent ER α -selective agonist), and DPN (a potent ER β -selective agonist) on modulation of metastatic phenotype were determined by using in vitro scratch wound assay and invasion assay. In addition, the effects on E-cadherin, vimentin, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) protein expression were evaluated by Western blot analysis. We found that BCPAP cells expressed ER α and ER β . E2 and PPT enhanced, but DPN inhibited, the migration and invasion of BCPAP cells in an in vitro experimental model system that is modulated by E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9. These findings indicate that E2 induces the metastatic potential of BCPAP cells through ER α and ER β . The two ER subtypes play differential roles in modulation of BCPAP cell metastasis and the related molecule expressions including E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9.

Abstract
Forkhead box D3 (FOXD3), as a transcriptional repressor, is well known to be involved in the regulation of development. Although FoxD3 is associated with several cancers, its role in colon cancer and the underlying mechanism are still unclear. Here, we first showed that FOXD3 knockdown dramatically increased the proliferation of human colon cancer cells, enhanced cell invasive ability and inhibited cell apoptosis. In vivo xenograft studies confirmed that the FOXD3-knockdown cells were more tumorigenic than the controls. Silencing FOXD3 markedly activated EGFR/Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathway in human colon cancer cells. In addition, blocking EGFR effectively decreased the activity of MAPK induced by FOXD3 knockdown. In human cancer tissue, the expression of FOXD3 was reduced, however, the EGFR/Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathway was activated. Our study indicates that FOXD3 may play a protective role in human colon formation by regulating EGFR/Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signal pathway. It is proposed that FOXD3 may have potential as a new therapeutic target in human colon cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection is reportedly associated with extradigestive diseases such as immune thrombocytopenic purpura and coronary heart disease. The risk factors for autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATDs) remain largely unknown, and whether H. pylori infection is associated with ATDs is still controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the association between H. pylori infection and ATDs. METHODS Studies comparing the prevalence rate of H. pylori infection in patients with ATDs and healthy controls, published in English, were identified through a systematic search in MEDLINE and EMBAS up to June 2012. Serological or nonserological tests were used to confirm H. pylori infection and the presence of cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) antigens. The odds ratios (OR) and associated 95% confidence intervals [CI] were obtained. RESULTS Seven studies involving a total of 862 patients met the inclusion criteria and thus were included in our meta-analysis. Overall, H. pylori infection was associated with ATDs (OR 1.92 [CI 1.41-2.61]); the association was significant for Graves' disease (OR 4.35 [CI 2.48-7.64]) but not for Hashimoto's thyroiditis (OR 1.45 [CI 0.92-2.26], p=0.11). No association was observed in the subanalysis of studies using only enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect H. pylori infection (OR 1.38 [CI 0.86-2.19], p=0.18). Five of the seven articles reported the association of CagA seroprevalence and ATDs. CagA seropositivity significantly increased the risk for ATDs by 2.24-fold [CI 1.06-4.75]. CONCLUSIONS Both the prevalence of H. pylori infection and the seroprevalence of CagA-positive strains are associated with ATDs. These findings suggest that H. pylori infection potentially plays a part in the development of ATDs.

Abstract
AIM Interleukin (IL)-22 regulates the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. The role of IL-22(+) T-cells in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is unclear. This study aimed at examining the levels of plasma IL-22 and the frequency of IL-22(+) CD4(+) T-cells in patients with RA. METHODS A total of 30 RA patients and 18 gender- and age-matched healthy controls were recruited. Their peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin for 6 h. The frequency of IL-22(+) , interferon (IFN)-γ(+) and IL-17A(+) CD4(+) T-cells was characterized by flow cytometry. The levels of plasma IFN-γ, IL-17A and IL-22, serum C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF), anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (CCP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were measured. RESULTS The frequency of IFNγ(-) IL-17A(-)IL-22(+), IFNγ(-)IL-17A(+)IL-22(+), and IFNγ(+) IL-17A(-)IL-22(+) T-cells in CD4(+) T-cells and the levels of plasma IFNγ, IL-17 and IL-22 in RA patients were significant higher than those in healthy controls. The percentages of IL-17A(+)IL-22(+)CD4(+) T-cells were correlated positively with the frequency of Th22 or Th17 cells in the RA patients. The percentages of IL-22(+)CD4(+) T-cells were correlated positively with the values of disease activity score (DAS28) in the RA patients. The percentages of Th22 cells were correlated positively with the levels of plasma IL-22 in the RA patients. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that IL-22(+)CD4(+) T-cells may contribute to the pathogenesis of RA and that therapeutic targeting of IL-22 may be valuable for the intervention of RA.

Abstract
This study is aimed at examining the potential role of regulatory T- (Treg-) Th1-Th17-Th22 cells in the pathogenic process of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). The numbers of Foxp3+Tregs and Th1, Th17, and Th22 cells were measured in 32 AIH patients using flow cytometry. Moreover, a murine model of experimental autoimmune hepatitis (EAH) was also established and used to investigate the function of Treg-Th1-Th17-Th22 cells in disease progression. AIH patients undergoing an active state had significantly decreased numbers of CD3+CD4+CD25+Foxp3+Tregs and increased numbers of CD3+CD4+CD25-Foxp3+T, CD3+CD4+IFN-γ+Th1, CD3+CD4+IL-17+Th17, and CD3+CD4+IL-2+Th22 cells as well as higher levels of Th1/Th17/Th22-type cytokines compared to AIH patients in remission and HC. Additionally, the numbers of CD3+CD4+CD25+Foxp3+Tregs were negatively correlated with the numbers of Th1-Th17-Th22 cells. Also, the serum levels of IL-17A and IL-22 were correlated positively with liver injury (ALT/AST), whereas the serum levels of IL-10 were correlated negatively with hypergammaglobulinaemia (IgG, IgM) in AIH patients. Interestingly, the percentages of spleen Tregs, expression of Foxp3 mRNA, and liver IL-10 levels decreased, whereas the percentages of spleen Th1-Th17-Th22 cells, expression of T-bet/AHR/RORγt mRNA, and liver IFN-γ, IL-17, and IL-22 levels increased in the murine model of EAH. Our findings demonstrated that an imbalance between Tregs and Th1-Th17-Th22 cells might contribute to the pathogenic process of AIH.
