Abstract
The diiron active sites of the purple acid phosphatases from porcine uterus (also called uteroferrin, Uf) and bovine spleen (BSPAP) and their complexes with tungstate are compared by 1H NMR and NOE techniques. The paramagnetically shifted features of the 1H NMR spectrum of reduced BSPAP are similar to those of reduced Uf, while the spectra of the tungstate complexes are almost identical. These observations suggest that the two active sites are quite similar, in agreement with the greater than 90% sequence homology found in the two enzymes. Nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) experiments on the His N-H resonances show that the Fe(III)-His residue is N epsilon-coordinated, while the Fe(II)-His is H delta-coordinated in both enzymes. On the basis of the above NMR and NOE results, our previously proposed model for the dinuclear iron active site of Uf [Scarrow, R. C., Pyrz, J. W., & Que, L., Jr. (1990) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 112, 657-665] is corroborated, refined, and found to represent the diiron center of BSPAP as well.

Abstract
Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (1,4,5-InsP3) was perfused into rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons by whole-cell patch-clamp electrodes, while measuring the membrane potential. This operation evoked a transient (2-3 min) membrane hyperpolarization of about -15 mV (from -42 mV) followed by a depolarization. The membrane hyperpolarization was abolished when 30 mM EGTA was perfused together with 1,4,5-InsP3 or when 0.2 mM quinine was added to the bath solution. The hyperpolarizing response was enhanced when a low-Ca2+ EGTA-free intracellular solution was used. Two InsP2 isomers induced a different response. Our results suggest that the hyperpolarization is due to 1,4,5-InsP3-induced Ca2+ release which may trigger Ca-sensitive K+ channels to open. Present results show that cultured DRG neurons are able to respond to 1,4,5-InsP3 perfusion in the whole-cell configuration.

Abstract
In 55 cases presenting with enlarged peripheral nerves without any skin lesions, a rice grain-sized biopsy of the nerve lesion was taken for histopathological examination. As a result definitive diagnoses could be established: leprosy was diagnosed in 32 cases. In 23 cases the cause of nerve enlargement was not leprosy: post-traumatic neuritis 9, cysts 5, hypertrophic neuritis 3, nonspecific 4, neurofibroma 1, and amyloidosis 1. In all of these cases there was a deficit of the nerve function and postoperatively there were no complications. The authors, as a result of this experience, believe that surgical exploration and biopsy is a harmless diagnostic tool for establishing a definitive diagnosis of leprosy in cases presenting with enlarged peripheral nerves without any skin lesions. In 23 out of 55 such cases the nerve enlargement was proved to be other causes than leprosy.

Abstract
Clinical measures of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 activity in vivo are limited and hinder the assessment of antiretroviral therapies. Reported here is a method for quantitating HIV-1 RNA in human plasma using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This method uses an internal cRNA standard generated from a cloned 113-bp deletion mutation of a highly conserved HIV-1 gag region sequence. The mutant cRNA (K4) was shown to amplify with efficiency equivalent to that of wild-type HIV-1. Known quantities of K4 cRNA added to wild-type HIV-1 in a competitive PCR strategy using a radiolabeled primer permitted quantitation of wild-type HIV-1 RNA over four orders of magnitude (10(3)-10(6) RNA copies). RNA isolated from plasma from AIDS patients yielded 10(3) to 8 x 10(4) HIV-1 RNA copies/ml of plasma with an average intrasample coefficient of variation of .26. This method offers a sensitive assay with a broad dynamic range for monitoring HIV-1 activity in the plasma of AIDS patients. It may provide a useful tool for assessing the effects of antiretroviral therapy.

Abstract
kDNA sequence homology of Leishmania donovani isolates from three types of kala-azar foci in China were analyzed by using dot and Southern hybridization with biotin- and 32P-labelled probes. The results revealed kDNA sequence heterogeneity among Leishmania donovani isolates from the three kala-azar foci: sequence homology between isolates of hill and desert foci was higher than that between hill and plain foci isolates. The kDNA hybridization technique was also found to be specific and sensitive for direct identification of Leishmania in animal tissues. In a preliminary survey, kDNA hybridization of cutaneous tissue blots of 71 dogs from endemic regions showed a positive rate of 40.8%, and the rate of double positive cases (touch blot hybridization and bone marrow smear) reached 91.3%. The direct identification of Leishmania in tissues by kDNA hybridization seems to be a useful and convenient method for epidemiological study and clinical diagnosis, especially for species/strain characterization.

Abstract
The object of this paper is to clarity the surface flattening mechanism in the cup ironing process based on the lubricating mechanism. A new experimental apparatus for the ironing process was made and experiments on ironing were carried out with aluminum cups using various lubricants and reductions in thickness. The experiments revealed that on the die surface the friction coefficient becomes minimum under the appropriate conditions of viscosity of lubricant and reduction in thickness. It was also confirmed that the cup surface is best flattened under conditions where the minimum friction coefficient appears.

Abstract
Elevated numbers of B cells--plasma cells secreting antibodies to measles and mumps virus, and to myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG), one of several putative myelin autoantigens--have previously been reported in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), while it is unknown if corresponding T cell reactivities occur. We have defined the T cell reactivities to measles and mumps virus and to MAG in an immunospot assay which is based on the detection of secretion of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by single cells upon stimulation with specific antigen in short term cultures. Patients with MS had higher numbers of MAG-reactive T cells in blood compared to controls, while no differences were observed for measles or mumps virus-reactive T cells. In CSF, elevated numbers of MAG-reactive T cells and also of measles- and mumps-reactive T cells were found in patients with MS compared to other neurological diseases. A strong accumulation of antigen-reactive T cells was observed in the MS patients' CSF compared to blood. The magnitude of these T cell reactivities did not correlate with clinical MS variables. The T cell repertoire in MS thus includes, besides myelin basic protein, proteolipid protein and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, also MAG and, in addition, measles and mumps virus. It is not clear whether these T cell reactivities accumulated in the CSF have importance for the pathogenesis of MS or reflect phenomena secondary to myelin damage, or result from both these alternatives.

Abstract
We describe two families with conjugal multiple sclerosis. Onset of symptoms in the husbands occurred 11 and 17 years after onset of relapsing/remitting symptoms in their wives. There were no similarities regarding clinical manifestations of MS within each family. Evaluation of T-cell repertoire by enumeration of cells secreting interferon-gamma in response to proteolipid protein (PLP), myelin basic protein (MBP), and to various synthetic MBP peptides revealed similar patterns of T-cell reactivity within the families both in MS-affected parents and unaffected children. Genomic HLA-DR-DQ typing showed that T-cell reactivity was independent of HLA class II phenotype. Analysis of B-cell responses in blood showed low numbers of cells secreting IgG, IgA, or IgM antibodies against MBP, PLP, myelin-associated glycoprotein, and myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein both in MS-affected and unaffected family members. In conclusion, our study of two families with conjugal MS has shown a dominant T-cell response against the same MBP peptide within the family both in MS-affected parents and unaffected children, and this T-cell response seems to be independent of the HLA class II phenotypes of the family members.

Abstract
Excision repair of DNA is an important cellular response to DNA damage caused by a broad spectrum of physical and chemical agents. We have established a cell-free system in which damage-specific DNA repair synthesis can be demonstrated in vitro with nuclear extracts from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Repair synthesis of UV-irradiated plasmid DNA was observed in a radiation dose-dependent manner and was unaffected by mutations in the RAD1, RAD2, RAD3, RAD4, RAD10, or APN1 genes. DNA damaged with cis-platin was not recognized as a substrate for repair synthesis. Further examination of the repair synthesis observed with UV-irradiated DNA revealed that it is dependent on the presence of endonuclease III-sensitive lesions in DNA, but not pyrimidine dimers. These observations suggest that the repair synthesis observed in yeast nuclear extracts reflects base excision repair of DNA. Our data indicate that the patch size of this repair synthesis is at least seven nucleotides. This system is expected to facilitate the identification of specific gene products which participate in base excision repair in yeast.

Abstract
Ninety-eight strains having extracellular penicillin acylase activity were derived from soil samples by colour-developing method. 10 strains of them possess higher activity of penicillin acylase. All of those are found to be Bacillus megaterium. The optimum condition of enzyme production was investigated with the strain No. 46 which is from No. 247 by single colony isolation. The productivity of penicillin acylase in the optimum condition have been enhanced 2.5 times more than that in the screening condition. The mutant strain, Bacillus megaterium UL-81, which penicillin acylase activity reached the level of 723u/100ml of broth was obtained from No. 46 by treatment with physical and chemical factors. The penicillin acylase activity of UL-81 can reach 820u/100 ml in 500L fermentor. The mutant strain differed from parent strain in the morphology of colony, the size of cells, the effect of concentration and the addition time of phenylacetic acid on the production of penicillin acylase.

Abstract
The cytochrome b subunit of the bc1 complexes contains two cytochrome components (bL and bH) and is the locus of both a quinol-oxidizing site (Qo or Qz) and a quinone-reducing site (Qi or Qc). Sequence alignments of this subunit from over 20 eukaryotic and prokaryotic species have revealed a remarkable degree of conservation, including approximately 20 totally conserved residues. In this paper, site-directed mutagenesis has been used to examine the structural or functional roles of 5 of these highly conserved residues, Gly48, Gln58, Ser102, Phe104, and Pro202, all predicted to be within transmembrane alpha-helical segments. The mutants were made in the bc1 complex of Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a photosynthetic bacterium. The ability to use spectroscopic, electrochemical, and flash-induced kinetic methods allows the mutants to be analyzed for influences both on cytochrome spectra and thermodynamic properties and on the kinetics of specific electron transfer reactions. The results show that none of the 5 residues is absolutely essential. Substitution of aspartate or valine for Gly48 results in the loss of photosynthetic growth. The G48V mutant assembles a bc1 complex, but with modified cytochromes bH and bL, and a dysfunctional quinone reductase (Qc) site; an alanine is tolerated at this position. Possibly, a small residue is important here for heme packing. Gln58 and Ser102 are the only highly conserved polar residues predicted to be within the transmembrane spans, apart from the histidines which are heme axial ligands. Neither Gln58 nor Ser102 is essential for assembly or function of the bc1 complex, although substitution of other amino acids in these positions does cause subtle, but measurable changes. Phe104 lies midway between the axial ligands to cytochromes bL and bH and can be modeled to project in the space separating the two hemes. Replacement of this highly conserved aromatic residue by isoleucine has no measurable influence on the rate of electron transfer through the cytochrome b chain containing the two hemes. Finally, Pro202 is a totally conserved proline which is in the middle of transmembrane helix D, in between the 2 histidines which provide ligands to the hemes. No major inhibition of electron transfer resulted from replacing this proline by a leucine, although subtle changes in spectra of the b cytochromes and their electrochemical properties were noted.

Abstract
One hundred and eighty-two patients with an ultrasonographic and/or pathological diagnosis of polypoid lesions of the gallbladder (PLG) were reviewed to determine the reliability of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of PLG and the indications for operation in this disease. Of the 182 patients operated on, PLG were demonstrated by the gross appearance of the resected gallbladder in 172. Histologically benign lesions were present in 159 gallbladders and malignant lesions in 13. Cholesterol polyps accounted for most benign PLG. The sensitivity of ultrasonography in detecting PLG was 90.1 per cent, significantly higher than that of oral cholecystography, computed tomography or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (P less than 0.01). The specificity of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of PLG was 93.9 per cent. Therefore, ultrasonography is a highly sensitive method for investigating PLG, and the preoperative diagnosis of PLG in this unit has now become entirely dependent on this technique. The size and number of PLG, the presence of gallstones and the patient's age all correlate with the nature of PLG, and these features are helpful in differentiating malignant from benign lesions before operation. Surgical treatment is indicated when PLG exceed 1.0 cm in diameter, when PLG are single in number, when PLG are associated with gallstones, when patients with PLG are over the age of 50 years, or when clinical symptoms of PLG are apparent.

Abstract
Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were studied in 93 patients with vertebrobasilar blood supply insufficient. The result showed that the abnormal rate of BAEP was 76.3%, and the rate of abnormality in acute period was much higher than that in recovery period. The BAEP types were classified as inner, brainstem and mixed. The vertigo could be caused by the inner ear ischemia, brainstem or both of them. If there is no improvement of BAEP in long-term follow-up, it suggested that there should be the tiny infarction affecting auditory passage or subclinical blood supply insufficient in brainstem. We believe that BAEP is valuable for the diagnosis of vertebrobasilar blood supply insufficient.

A method of making rainbow holograms by using a full object beam is described. In this technique we simultaneously use a moving object and a moving imaging lens, instead of using a slit during the exposure process. The position of the synthetic slit is independent of the position of the imaging lens and its focal length. Using this method, a one-step rainbow holographic image with a large visual field and high resolution can be obtained. A theoretical analysis and some experimental results are presented.

Abstract
Localized proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), obtained with stimulated echo and spin echo sequences, MR imaging (MRI) and MR angiography (MRA) were used to study the brain in 13 children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. Regions of interest (ROI) studied by MRS included regions appearing normal on MRI as well as regions showing complications of sickle cell disease, including focal deep white matter areas of high signal intensity (deep white matter ischemia, DWMI) seen on long TR images, focal atrophic brain areas, and infarcts. The findings in these studies are summarized as follows: Normal-appearing regions on MRI have normal MRS. In ROI including small areas of DWMI, lactate elevation was not detected, but the levels of N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) appeared slightly elevated. In areas of DWMI 1-2 cm in size, reduced blood flow could be seen on MRA and lactate elevation could be detected with MRS. When blood flow to a DWMI region was normal, NAA was reduced and there was little lactate elevation, as cell death had already occurred. ROI consisting of atrophic tissue had reduced NAA levels but total creatine levels were not changed. Sometimes lipids, presumably from broken cell membrane, could be detected. In regions of past massive stroke, all metabolites were absent except for small amounts of lactate or lipids.

Abstract
Circadian and circaseptan adjustment of blood pressure and heart rate after a transmeridian flight by a family of four was relatively fast, but it was not abrupt; it was not completed during the first week in the new setting. Gradual changes continued for the ensuing three weeks. The circadian and circaseptan rhythm characteristics and their adjustment in particular differed among variables in the husband: the circadian component of heart rate adjusted more rapidly than that of blood pressure. The adjustment also differed among two members of the family. A new phenomenon, namely a difference in circadian rhythm adjustment between husband and wife, is also described herein: the wife's circadian rhythm in blood pressure advanced by 9 hours within the 4-week span of recording following a 9-hour advance in living routine (after a 9-zone transmeridian flight); since both schedule and rhythm moved in the same direction (albeit not at the same rate), the behavior may be dubbed concursive. By contrast, the husband delayed to achieve the same adjustment: his behavior was anticursive. The phenomenon of a difference in direction of adjustment for different variables in the same subject has been described earlier as polarity, now qualified as intra-individual polarity, to separate it from the precedent of an intrafamilial or more broadly inter-individual polarity or partitioning, reported apparently for the first time and dubbed 'cursion'.

Abstract
PURPOSE Preferential amplification of low dose-rate irradiation toxicity in tumor cells is one way of improving presently applied brachytherapy. Low temperature hyperthermia applied to a tumor volume during irradiation is one candidate for reaching this goal. The ranges of relevant temperatures and dose-rate have been determined in a tissue culture system. In addition, the role of inhibition of sublethal damage repair in inhibition of dose-rate sparing has been investigated. METHODS AND MATERIALS Dose-rate modification by long duration, mild hyperthermia was investigated in rat 9L gliosarcoma cells at dose-rates between 0.0833 and 132 Gy/hr. Enhancement of toxicity was measured using the colony formation technique. RESULTS A biphasic dose-rate effect curve was observed when cells were irradiated at 37 degrees C. The dose required to kill 99% of cells irradiated at 37 degrees C increased sharply between 20 and 5 Gy/hr and also below 1 Gy/hr. When cells were irradiated at 41 degrees C, dose-rate sparing disappeared from 132 to 0.0833 Gy/hr. Elimination of dose-rate sparing appeared to be caused by both inhibition of sublethal damage repair and blockage of cell proliferation. The temperature threshold for sensitizing low dose-rate irradiation was determined at temperatures between 24 degrees C and 41 degrees C during 0.5 Gy/hr irradiation. Temperature dependent sensitization occurred above 39 degrees C. The mechanisms by which low temperature hyperthermia sensitizes low dose-rate irradiation was investigated using split dose experiments. Survival curve shoulder recovery was inhibited when cells were incubated at 41 degrees C between acute irradiations. This effect appeared to be caused by both inhibition of recovery from sublethal damage from the first radiation and preheating sensitization of the second irradiation. In single acute dose experiments, sensitization from preheating at 41 degrees C increased gradually over a 6 hr period. CONCLUSIONS The mechanism by which 41 degrees C hyperthermia sensitizes low dose-rate irradiation is inhibition of radiation repair at medium dose rates and inhibition of repair and proliferation at very low dose rates. If low temperature hyperthermia is able to sensitize human tumor cells to brachytherapy similar to what has been described with 9L gliosarcoma cells, the addition of this modality could potentially greatly improve presently applied therapy.

Abstract
A gene expression screen identifies mRNAs that differ in abundance between two mRNA mixtures by a subtractive hybridization method. The two mRNA populations are converted to double-stranded cDNAs, fragmented, and ligated to linkers for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. The multiple cDNA fragments isolated from any given gene can be treated as alleles in a genetic screen. Probability analysis of the frequency with which multiple alleles are found provides an estimation of the total number of up- and down-regulated genes. We have applied this method to genes that are differentially expressed in amphibian tadpole tail tissue in the first 24 hr after thyroid hormone treatment, which ultimately induces tail resorption. We estimate that there are about 30 up-regulated genes; 16 have been isolated.

Abstract
An analysis of subtypes of 9 respiratory syncytial (RS) viruses isolated from Guangzhou and Nanjing areas of china was carried out with eight Sweden RS-subtype specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and 7 internal anti-RS MAbs. All these MAbs directed against respectively the large Glycoprotein (G), fusion protein (F), nucleoprotein (NP), and phosphoprotein (P) components of the prototype Long strain of RS virus. The patterns of the reactions of these MAbs to the nine isolated strains of RS virus were compared with indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), alkaline phosphoesterase-anti alkaline phosphoesterase (APAAP) enzyme-linked assay and Western blotting. The antigenic variations were founded among the strains of RS virus, and two subtypes allocated to the subtype A and B of RS virus by using the eight RS-subtype specific MAbs. Seven out of the 9 isolated strains of RS virus belonged to the subtype A, and two were being to the subtype B. The antigenic diversities were also founded within the same subtype, and the main pronounced difference were observed on the G glycoprotein by using the internal anti-RS MAbs. These findings are potentially important both for vaccine development and for the understanding of clinical and epidemiological characteristics of RS virus.

Abstract
Expression plasmids (pKCPS-CAT) containing carbamyl phosphate synthetase (CPS I) upstream sequences of different lengths were constructed, and the function and characteristics of the sequences were studied with the CAT assay. Results showed that the CPS I upstream sequences exerted highly tissue-specific control on CPS I gene expression, and the -113 approximately -38 bp region relative to the cap site was found to be indispensable for CPS I gene transcription. The -1700 approximately -161 bp region contains sequences which confer an enhancing effect on CPS I gene transcription. Dexamethasone and thioproline (a differentiation inducer) showed enhancing effects on CPS I gene transcription in hepatoma cells. These results would have significance in studies on the gene regulation of CPS I associated with the mechanism of hepatocyte differentiation and carcinogenesis.

Abstract
The messages for LF-B1, which interacts with the cis-acting element of PKL-I to play an essential role in expression of L-type pyruvate kinase (PK) in the liver, and L-type PK were found to be present in RIN-m5F insulinoma cells as well as the liver, kidney and small intestine, although the levels of the two mRNAs in these tissues were not correlated. Gel retardation assay suggested that similar nuclear proteins bound to two other cis-acting elements, PKL-II and PKL-III, were expressed in both liver and insulinoma cells, and that additional PKL-III-binding proteins were present only in RIN-m5F cells. Thus, we suggest that the mechanism of L-type PK expression in pancreatic B cells is similar to that in the liver.

Abstract
1. The actions of serotonin (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA) in the cat perigeniculate nucleus (PGN) and the guinea-pig nucleus reticularis thalami (NRT) were investigated with extracellular and intracellular recordings obtained from neurones in thalamic slices maintained in vitro. 2. Single, local application of either 5-HT or NA resulted in pronounced (5-50 Hz) and prolonged (2-10 min) excitation associated with the occurrence of single-spike activity. Serotoninergic excitation was specifically blocked by the 5-HT2/5-HT1C antagonists ketanserin and ritanserin, but not by the 5-HT1A antagonist pindolol or the 5-HT3 antagonist ICS 205-930. Furthermore, the 5-HT response was mimicked by alpha-methyl-5-HT, but not by the 5-HT1A agonist 8-hydroxydipropylaminotetralin (8-OHDPAT) or the 5-HT3 agonist 2-methyl-5-HT. Together, these results indicate that this excitatory response is mediated through 5-HT2 receptors with the possible involvement of 5-HT1C receptors. 3. Noradrenergic excitation was specifically blocked by the alpha 1-antagonist prazosin, but not by the beta-antagonist propranolol or the alpha 2-antagonist yohimbine. Similarly, the response was mimicked by the alpha-agonist phenylephrine, but not by the beta-agonist isoprenaline. These results indicate that the noradrenergic excitation is mediated by alpha 1-adrenoceptors. 4. Block of synaptic transmission either by lowering external calcium concentration ([Ca2+]o) to 0.5 mM and raising external magnesium concentration ([Mg2+]o) to 10 mM or by local application of tetrodotoxin failed to block the excitatory or depolarizing response to 5-HT or NA indicating that these responses are direct and not mediated through the release of other neurotransmitters. 5. Intracellular recordings revealed that the 5-HT- and NA-induced excitations are mediated by a pronounced slow depolarization associated with an apparent decrease in input conductance and an increase in the membrane time constant. Current versus voltage plots obtained under voltage clamp before and during the presence of 5-HT and NA revealed that these neurotransmitters induced an inward current which reversed to an outward current at -107 and -110 mV, respectively, in 2.5 mM external potassium concentration ([K+]o). This reversal potential was identical to that associated with an increase in potassium conductance activated by acetylcholine (-110 mV) in the same neurones. Plots of the amplitude of the 5-HT- or NA-induced current versus membrane potential revealed a linear relationship in the voltage range from -140 to -60 mV.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
The preparation of lyophilized human urine certified reference material (CRM) was established on the basis of literature in other countries and domestic conditions. The homogeneity and stability of the CRM accord with the stipulations. The certified values were determined by 14 high level laboratories in China using nine methods with different principles and have been examined by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) using Inductively Coupled Plasma--Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). This CRM has been approved as first grade national reference material. It can be used in quality control of routine analysis, test of new methods, and as standard material for calibration of analytical instruments and as certified reference material for quantity transmission and analysis arbitration.

Abstract
A polarization pinhole interferometer is based on the principles of pinhole diffraction, a common light path, and the polarization technique in its design. It has many advantages, such as adjustable contrast of the fringes, nondestructive testing, and less sensitivity to environmental factors. The instrument can be used extensively in optical element testing and glue-layer testing. The accuracy of the fringe pattern analysis is controlled by the number of sampled points in the fringes. The analysis results of the closed fringe pattern are given.

Abstract
Terpenes, especially 3-carene, may irritate the skin and mucous membranes and prolonged exposure may result in allergic contact dermatitis or chronic lung function impairment. The toxicokinetics of 3-carene were studied in human volunteers exposed by inhalation (2 hr 50 W) in an exposure chamber on three occasions. The exposure concentrations were approximately 10, 225, and 450 mg/m3 3-carene. The relative pulmonary uptake was high, approximately 70% for the higher exposure levels. Total uptake increased linearly with increasing exposure. The blood clearance of 3-carene observed in this study, 0.9 liter.kg-1.hr-1, indicates that 3-carene is fairly readily metabolized. About 3% of the total uptake was eliminated unchanged via the lungs while less than 0.001% was eliminated in the urine after the end of exposure. A long half time in blood was observed in the terminal phase which indicates a high affinity to adipose tissues. A statistically significant divergence between ratings of irritation during the high exposure level and during the medium and control levels was observed. The difference in airway resistance after exposure to a high concentration of 3-carene compared to control level was not significant (P = 0.02).

Abstract
Fifteen cases of viral pneumonia in infants were treated with refined interferon-alpha and antibiotics. Clinical symptoms of the cases with IFN-alpha were relieved in 1.40-2.79 days, earlier than those of the control. Clinical recovery time was on the average shorter than that of the control by 1.9 days, and complete recovery by 1.5 days. The difference is statistically significant. It suggested that the clinical effect of IFN-alpha together with antibiotics is better than that of antibiotics alone. There was no significant change between the experimental and control groups in absolute lymphocyte count Ig and T-cell, but OKT3 increased and OKT8 decreased slightly. The study shows that IFN is an effective and safe administration for viral pneumonia.

Abstract
The Microscreen assay was developed as a means of testing very small samples, as in complex mixture fractionation. It is a multi-endpoint assay which utilizes E. coli WP2s(lambda). Exposure takes place to serial dilutions of the test compound in microtitre wells (250 microliters) followed by sampling from wells in which growth has occurred ('non-toxic wells'). Although a number of different endpoints can be measured, only the prophage induction endpoint (the first one developed) has been extensively tested. Results with 133 compounds are presented. These include 111 compounds which have been tested in the S. typhimurium assay and 66 compounds for which both rodent bioassay and S. typhimurium assay data exists. The concordance for the Microscreen assay and the S. typhimurium assay was 71%. For this group of compounds, the sensitivity of the Microscreen assay in detecting carcinogens was 76% compared with 58% for the S. typhimurium assay. However, the S. typhimurium assay was somewhat more specific (69%) compared with the Microscreen (56%). The overall association between carcinogenicity and Microscreen results was statistically significant (p = 0.029), whereas for the S. typhimurium assay the association with carcinogenicity was non-significant (p = 0.086). The Microscreen assay was able to detect halogenated compounds better than the S. typhimurium assay. The Microscreen assay should prove useful in complex mixture fractionation, or in other situations where sample size is limiting.

Abstract
The author employed the radioimmunoimaging technique in localizing osteosarcoma with the use of bone morphogenetic protein monoclonal antibodies (BMP-McAb). BMP-McAb which had been labelled with 125I or 131I by the chloramine T method was given in injection to patients, and imaging was performed on SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) 24 or 48 hrs after the injection of antibodies. There were seven patients with osteosarcoma and one with parosteal osteosarcoma. The result of SPECT imaging confirmed of the tumor areas of osteosarcoma clearly visualized; and the T/NT ratio of radioactivity the highest is 11.5 and average on 5.92. There is no positive imaging in parosteal sarcoma the technique of the radioimmunoimaging presented have those advantages: specificity and sensitivity powerful, easy to operate and harmless to health. The result of our study demonstrated biodistribution that the BMP-McAb retained in osteosarcomas tissues and indicated there are most BMP in tumor areas. It is therefore proposed that BMP are one kind of related antigen with osteosarcomas and has a satisfactory to clinical study.

Abstract
Stimulation by macrophage secretory products of the migration of arterial smooth muscle cells was studied in vitro with a modified system. Round cell colonies were formed by plating subcultured smooth muscle cells into the middle wells of agarose gels. Following irradiation (1500 rads) and refeeding with test medium, cell migration was observed by measuring the increase in surface area of cell colonies at specific time intervals. The cell colonies expanded under the agarose gels with an increment of approximately 10.6 mm2 per day when exposed to macrophage conditioned medium, and the average increase in surface area of the colonies was approximately 5.7 and 8.6 mm2 per day when exposed to platelet-deficient serum and whole blood serum, respectively. The results indicate that macrophages may contribute to atheromatous plaque formation by stimulating smooth muscle cell migration into the intima in the case of arterial damage due to hyperlipemia or other causes.

Abstract
Comparing with foreign ELISA reagent and Western blot, evaluation of the quality of the immunoenzymatic reagent was done by testing four set of sera from residents in the border of Yunnan province and other provinces results suggested that the sensitivity of IE was 100% and its specificity was 99.4%. Other indexes were similar to imported ELISA reagent. So IE reagent can be used in national HIV surveillance. The quality evaluation is credible because of the great number of tested sera.

Abstract
The cellular DNA content was quantitatively and the expression of oncogene ras P 21 qualitatively assessed in paraffin embedded tumor specimens from 62 patients with bladder tumors, using the paraffin-embedded bladder mucosa specimens from 7 patients with non-neoplastic urinary diseases as control. The results were retrospectively analysed in relation to the outcome of patients on follow-up. In 25 cases with superficial bladder tumor the positive rate of P 21 expression and the frequency of aneuploid were 92% and 12%, respectively. But in 37 cases with infiltrative bladder tumor the positive rate of P 21 expression and the frequency of aneuploid were 29.7% and 78.3%, respectively. It was considered that the P 21 expression may imply early bladder tumor whereas the finding of aneuploid was a parameter of advanced bladder tumor. Our results also showed that the expression or non-expression of P 21 was closely related to DNA ploid patterns. The positive rate of P 21 expression was 90% in the diploid bladder tumors and 50% in the tetraploid bladder tumors. The P 21 expression was negative in all the cases with double aneuploid bladder tumors. The results suggest that DNA ploid patterns and P 21 expression, when analyzed simultaneously, would be prognostically more informative than either alone.

Intervarietal F1 hybrids of Fritiliaria thunbergii and interspecific F1 hybrids between F. thunbergii and its kindred species were successfully obtained. The methods of breaking the dormancy of F1 seeds and F1 bulbs were investigated. Moreover, the temperature off-season generational advance was preliminarily grouped.

Abstract
A comparative study of chest roentgenograms and the value of RV/TLC% in determining degree of emphysema of patients with pneumoconiosis and workers exposed to dust was made in 400 cases. Accordance rate of RV/TLC% with roentgenograms in determining emphysema in the same subjects was 61.1% and that in the patients group, 67.7%. Moreover, the accordance rate increased with grade of pneumoconiosis diagnosed. The results showed that RV/TLC% was valuable in determining emphysema of patients with pneumoconiosis. The classes of degree of emphysema were proposed according to the testing value of RV/TLC%.

Abstract
DBA/2J mice were immunized daily for 3 days per os with 10(8)-10(9) colony forming units (c.f.u.) of two different temperature-sensitive (TS) mutants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At varying times after the final immunization the animals were exposed to aerosols of the parental immunotype 1, and the ability of the immunized and control mice to clear their lungs of the wild-type (WT) challenge was measured 4 h later. The number of c.f.u. remaining in the lungs of mice immunized with one mutant, D/1/8, was significantly less (p less than 0.01) than the number remaining in the lungs of control mice and mice immunized with a second TS mutant, E/9/9.
