Abstract
V-C horizontal diffusion cell and HPLC determination have been used to study the effect of 1,2-propanediol and azone on the percutaneous absorption Venenum Bufonis. The contents of resibufogenin have been determined through mouse skin in vitro by HPLC. The results indicate that the contents get increased when 1,2-propanediol is added and that azone can shorten the lag time of percutaneous absorption of resibufogenin through mouse skin in vitro.

Genotypic and phenotypic characterization of Borrelia burgdorferi isolated from ticks and small animals in Illinois. J Clin Microbiol 1995; 33:2304-15. Abstract
We have characterized 33 isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi from northern Illinois (32 isolates) and Wisconsin (1 isolate) representing the largest series of midwestern isolates investigated to date. The techniques used for molecular analysis of strains included (i) genospecies typing with species-specific PCR primers, (ii) plasmid profiling by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of total genomic DNA, (iii) large-restriction-fragment pattern (LRFP) analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of MluI-digested genomic DNA (J. Belfaiza, D. Postic, E. Bellenger, G. Baranton, and I. Saint Girons, J. Clin. Microbiol. 31:2873-2877, 1993), (iv) sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of total proteins, (v) microsequencing of high-performance liquid chromatography-purified peptides derived from proteins showing high levels of expression, (vi) amino acid composition analysis of proteins, and (vii) immunological analysis of proteins with a polyclonal antiserum of human origin. Five reference strains as well as two atypical tick isolates from California (DN127) and New York (25015) were included for comparison. All of the Illinois and Wisconsin isolates were typed as B. burgdorferi sensu stricto with genospecies-specific PCR primers. The isolates were found to be heterogeneous with regard to their plasmid and protein profiles. One isolate from Illinois possessed two large-molecular-size plasmids instead of the usual 49-kb plasmid. Fragment patterns resulting from MluI digestion of genomic DNA from the 33 isolates and strains DN127 and 25015 were separable into six distinct LRFPs, five of which have not previously been described. Strain 25015 and an isolate from Illinois (CT39) shared an unusual LRFP that is not typical of other B. burgdorferi sensu stricto strains, suggesting that they may represent a fifth species of B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Five of the 33 isolates and strains DN127 and 25015 showed high-level expression of proteins with molecular masses of approximately 22 kDa. Investigation of these proteins by microsequencing of individual peptides and total amino acid composition analysis indicated that the 22-kDa proteins expressed by the seven strains were polymorphic OspC proteins. By using a polyclonal serum of human origin, expression of OspC could be detected in all 33 Illinois and Wisconsin isolates.

Abstract
Erythema migrans skin lesions resulting from a tick bite and infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato eventually resolve, even without antibiotic therapy. The aim of the present study was to gauge the frequency of persistence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in such lesions. Thus, the site of a previous lesion was biopsied and cultured in 48 patients: 39 with systemic or localized symptoms/signs and nine with no symptoms. B. burgdorferi sensu lato was isolated from biopsied skin from three symptomatic patients. Cultures of other tissues and fluids were negative. By genospecies-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and pulsed-field gel electrophoretic (PFGE) analysis, two isolates were classified as Borrelia afzelii. The remaining isolate was a member of an unusual group of strains that type as B. burgdorferi sensu stricto by genospecies PCR but possess an atypical PFGE profile. All three patients had a dramatic clinical response to antibiotic treatment. These findings demonstrate the capacity of viable B. burgdorferi sensu lato organisms to persist in clinically normal-appearing skin at the site of a resolved erythema migrans rash for periods ranging from 2 months to 3.5 years. This observation may provide new insight into the organisms' ability to evade the host's immune response.

Abstract
In a series of experiments with rats, using evoked field potentials, the influence of massed trial training in 2-way shuttle box avoidance and step-through passive avoidance tasks was studied on the synaptic excitability of the lateral septum (LS) neurons and on the induction of long-term potentiation in the lateral septum in vivo. The majority of rats that attained a high performance level in the shuttle box task exhibited, after the shuttle box training, a long-lasting enhancement of synaptic excitability of lateral septum neurons, whereas most of the rats with low performance in the shuttle box showed a long-lasting depression in the LS synaptic excitability. Both types of excitability changes disappeared within 24 h. Neither the first habituation session in the passive avoidance apparatus nor the subsequent one-trial learning in passive avoidance task had a marked influence on lateral septum synaptic excitability. Both high-performance and low-performance rats exhibited a long-term potentiation (LTP)-like potentiation of synaptic excitability of the lateral septum neurons after high frequency stimulation of the fimbria fibers although the amount of LTP in high performance rats was slightly higher than that in low performance animals.

Abstract
We demonstrate stable single-frequency and polarization operation of a traveling-wave, Er(3+)-doped fiber loop laser by incorporating an unpumped Er(+3)-doped fiber section butted against a narrow-band feedback reflector. The saturable absorber acts as a narrow bandpass filter that automatically tracks the lasing wavelength, thus ensuring single-frequency operation. Output powers up to 6.2 mW at 1535 nm were obtained for launched pump powers of 175 mW at 1064 nm. At this output, the relative intensity noise was less than -112 dBy/Hz at frequencies above 200 kHz and a laser linewidth of less than 0.95 kHz, whereas the lasing frequency was observed to drift slowly (~170 MHz/h) because of environmental effects.

Abstract
Twelve cases of abnormal abdominal walls in fetuses are reported in this paper. Among them, there were 4 cases of umbilical hernia, 4 cases of a defective abdominal wall, 3 cases of diaphragmatic hernia and 1 case of a defective thoracic and abdominal wall. From the features of the sonographic picture, the reasons for misdiagnosis are discussed. From our analysis, the main points of differential diagnosis and the earliest time for making diagnosis are proposed. The diagnostic rate could be improved obviously by systemic and careful examination which is important for deciding the model and time of deliveries.

Abstract
This article reports sonographic characteristics of a ruptured corpus luteum with hemoperitoneum in 44 cases. Sonographic findings were classified and compared with laparotomy and pathology. From sonographic imaging, it was found that the ruptured corpus luteum cyst was pathognomonic. There was a good correlation between ultrasound findings and surgical results when bleeding was over 100 ml. The sonographic value in diagnosis of ruptured corpus luteum with hemoperitoneum is discussed in detail.

Abstract
Transport of RNAs within nuclei and through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are essential, but poorly understood, steps in gene expression. In experiments with mammalian cells, RCC1, the abundant nuclear guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the guanosine triphosphatase Ran/TC4, was shown to be required for nucleocytoplasmic transport of precursors of spliceosomal small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), intranuclear transport of U3 snRNA, and processing of ribosomal RNAs, but not for export of transfer RNAs. It is proposed that guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-bound Ran/TC4 associates with ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs) during intranuclear movement, and that GTP hydrolysis promotes deposition of RNPs at targeted sites such as NPCs or nucleoli.

Abstract
Resistance to ceftazidime, detected in isolates of Escherichia coli 5518 and Enterobacter gergoviae 3773 from our hospital, was transferred, together with resistance to aminoglycosides, trimethoprim, sulfonamide, and other beta-lactam antibiotics, by conjugation to E. coli JP559. Both E. coli transconjugants were resistant to ampicillin, all cephalosporins, and aztreonam but remained susceptible to cefoxitin and imipenem. The enzymes of the two transconjugant strains readily hydrolyzed cephalosporins in a spectrophotometric assay. Hybridization results suggested that the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase produced by E. coli 5518 was a non-TEM, non-SHV enzyme, the origin of which is currently unknown. The beta-lactamase produced by E. gergoviae 3773 was of the SHV type and was further proved to be SHV-2 by DNA sequencing. Thus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases are occurring in China as well as in other parts of the world.

Abstract
In our previous experiments, evidence of free radical formation has been demonstrated in gerbil brain after kainic acid (KA) administration. In the present study, the mechanisms involved in KA-induced free radical formation and subsequent cell degeneration were investigated using high density cortical neuron cultures. A free radical trapping agent, alpha-phenyl-N-tert- butyl-nitrone (PBN), as well as the combined action of superoxide dismutase and catalase attenuated KA neurotoxic effect. Calpain-induced xanthine oxidase (XO) activation may play an important role in KA excitotoxicity since calpain inhibitor I as well as allopurinol, a selective XO inhibitor, significantly protected the cortical neurons from KA-induced cell death. However, XO activation may not be the only source producing free radicals, other free radical generating systems such as nitric oxide synthase may also play a role in KA insult.

Abstract
125I-labeled bovine serum albumin microspheres loaded cisplatinum (CDDP-125I-BSA-MS) with the size range of 7-25 microns were prepared and injected into the tail vein of mice. The results showed that the microspheres were accumulated almost entirely in the lung after i.v. injection (about 97.52% injected dose at the highest concentration). While in blood and other organs almost no accumulation was found. Photomicrographs showed that microspheres reached the lung and lodged in precapillary arteriols and capillaries of lung. The microspheres in lung were eliminated gradually. The pharmacokinetics of microspheres in lung of mice was also studied with "practical pharmacokinetic program-version 87", and was fitted by two-compartment model with i.v. injection or one-compartment model with 1st order absorption, but the meaning of some parameters changed. Based on the analysis of the models and parameters, it was concluded that the pharmacokinetics of microspheres in lungs can be described by the model of "one-compartment of first-order intake and first-order elimination".

Abstract
A novel extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESbla) encoded on a plasmid of approximately 7.5kb, conferring resistance to beta-lactams tested except cefoxitin and imipenem, was found in a ceftazidime-resistant isolate of E. coli form our hospital. The resistance to beta-lactams was transferred by conjugation to E. coli JP559 together with the aminoglycosides and sulfonamide resistance. Clavulanate, one of beta-lactamase inhibitors, inhibited its activity. This ESbla gene hybridized neither with an intra-genic fragment of SHV-1 nor with that of TEM-1. The molecular origin of that novel ESbla needed to be further studied.

Abstract
A physical map of the 9.2-Mbp Myxococcus xanthus DK1622 chromosome at a resolution of 25 kbp was constructed by using a strategy that is applicable to virtually all microorganisms. Segments of the chromosome were used as hybridization probes to subdivide a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) library into groups of linked clones. The clones were aligned by comparing their EcoRI restriction patterns. The groups of YAC clones ("contigs") were oriented and aligned with the genomic restriction map by means of common genetic and physical markers such as rare restriction sites and transposon insertions. Over 95% of the genome is represented by cloned DNA. Sixty genetic loci including > 100 genes, many of which play a role in fruiting body development, have been mapped in this way. Additional genes can now be located on the chromosome map by hybridization of their sequences to the ordered set of YAC chromosomes. The mapped genetic loci account for approximately 2% of the genome.

Abstract
An experimental study is designed for the evaluation of the effect of fluid resuscitation with addition of 1-6FDP on myocardiac function in severely burned rabbits. 60 rabbits were divided into four groups. Group A (n = 15) served as control without treatment. The animals in group B (n = 15) were treated with 1-6-FDP immediately after burning. The animals in group C (n = 15) were treated with balanced saline solution (BSS). The animals in group D(n = 15) were treated with BSS plus 1-6-FDP. All rabbits sustained 25% TBSA full thickness burn. LVSP, LV +/- dp/dt max and PV were measured before burn, immediately after burn, and 1, 3, 5, 7 h, after burn, except that PV was not measured immediately after burn. The results showed that depression in myocardial contractility and relaxation were noted immediately after severe burn. Fluid resuscitation alone did not significantly improve myocardial function (P > 0.05 compared with control). The administration of 1-6-FDP showed a beneficial effect in improving myocardial contractility and relaxation within 3 hours postburn. With fluid resuscitation plus 1-6-FDP, myocardial contractility and relaxation were improved statistically significantly as compared with the control group (P < 0.01).

Abstract
Extracellular ATP is known to cause a variety of changes, including the alteration of ion fluxes, cell growth, and other physiological activities. Recently, it has been suggested that ATP acts as an excitatory synaptic transmitter, which may produce a Ca2+ influx via the activation of a P2y purinoceptor. Rat pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells are known to resemble rat sensory neurons and to possess a P2y purinoceptor. In this study, we demonstrated that extracellular ATP dose-dependently increased PC-12 cell death in the presence of ferrous ions. Voltage-sensitive calcium channel blockers and calpain and xanthine oxidase inhibitors were found to be effective at protecting PC-12 cells from Fe2+/ATP-induced lipid peroxidation and cell death. These results suggest that xanthine oxidase activation induced by calpains and subsequent free radical formation may be responsible for Fe2+/ATP-induced neuronal cell death.

Abstract
The rat Schwannoma cell line D6P2T constitutively expresses the mRNA encoding the major myelin protein, P0, but only expresses the mRNA encoding myelin basic protein (MBP) after exposure to forskolin or other substances that raise the levels of intracellular cyclic AMP. In this study we have investigated the molecular basis for forskolin induction of MBP transcription in D6P2T cells. We have found that a 9-bp sequence element, CACTTGATC, located between nucleotides -85 and -77 in the MBP promoter, is necessary for forskolin induction of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) expression after transient transfection of MBP promoter-CAT fusion constructs into D6P2T cells. Although similar DNase I footprints, one of which is located within the above 9-bp sequence element, are produced by nuclear extracts prepared from both forskolin-treated and untreated cells, this same sequence can be shown to interact with a forskolin-inducible protein complex using an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. In addition, mutation of this 9-bp sequence abolishes both formation of this new protein--DNA complex and forskolin-inducible CAT expression from the heterologous SV40 promoter. Finally, we have shown that the appearance of this forskolin-inducible protein--DNA complex precedes that of MBP mRNA. Taken together, these data strongly support the notion that the induction of MBP transcription by forskolin in D6P2T cells is mediated by the binding of a forskolin-inducible protein complex to the MBP promoter sequence CACTTGATC.

Abstract
The extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESbla) gene on R-plasmid harbored in E. coli C3773, a transconjugant of the clinical isolate of Ent. gergoviae 3773 from our hospital, was cloned and two fragments were subcloned into M13. The nucleotide sequences of two fragments were determined. The primary structure of this ESbla deduced from nucleotide sequence had only a Gly-->Ser change at position 234 in comparison with SHV-1, which was supposed to be responsible for extended-spectrum activity and resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporins. The result suggested that the ESbla appearing in our hospital was SHV-2.

Abstract
Color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) was performed in 24 patients with Graves' disease and the results were compared with those from 8 patients with Hashimoto's disease, 6 patients with simple diffuse goiter, and 15 normal volunteers. All cases were confirmed by clinical, laboratory tests or pathology. CDFI of Graves' disease showed diffuse or localized hypoechoes within the thyroid glands, rich flow signals in the hypoechoes, accelerated flow velocity, and decreased resistance in the superior thyroid arteries (STA) and arteries within the glands. These appearances were characteristic as compared with the controls. The rate of flow in STA of Graves' disease patients was 8 to 10 times higher than that in the normal volunteers. Abstract
We have mapped and sequenced the GP42/Basigin gene isolated from a Balb/C mouse genomic library. The genomic organization and upstream, putative regulatory, regions of this gene have not been previously reported. Our data show that exon 5 of the GP42/Basigin gene encodes the carboxy proximal half of the second Ig-like domain, the highly conserved transmembrane region and a portion of the cytoplasmic tail. This inclusion of Ig-like and other functional domains in a single exon is unusual. Splice junction analysis indicates that two reported alternate GP42/Basigin cDNA isoforms are likely due to cloning artifacts. In addition, we find that GP42/Basigin is polymorphic in mice. Our data also support the proposal that the transmembrane domain and portions of the cytoplasmic region of GP42/Basigin have been evolutionarily conserved.

Abstract
By conjugation experiment, an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESb1a) encoded on a transferable plasmid of approximately 60 Kilobases was found in a clinical strain of Enterobacter gergoviae isolated from Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Its E. coli transconjugant was resistant to all beta-lactams tested except cefoxitin and imipenem. Clavulanic acid, a classical beta-lactamase inhibitor, inhibited its activity. Hybridization with an intragenic probe for SHV-1 revealed that this ESb1a may be related to, or derived from SHV enzyme.

Abstract
We carried out anatomical research of the second metacarpal dorsal artery on 30 cadaver specimens. We find that the second metacarpal dorsal artery is a branch of the radial artery, and it is a nutrient artery for an axial or retrograde skin flap, similar to the first metacarpal dorsal artery island flap. This island flap is used in 7 patients, and all flaps survived well.

Abstract
The thermal stability of sputter-deposited Mo/Si multilayers was investigated by annealing studies at relatively low temperatures (˜ 250-350 °C) for various times (0.5-3000 h). Two distinct stages of thermally activated Mo/Si interlayer growth were found: a primary surge, followed by a (slower) secondary steady-state growth in which the interdiffusion coefficient is constant. The interdiffusion coefficients for the interlayer formed by deposition of Mo-on-Si are higher than those of the interlayer formed by deposition of Si-on-Mo. Assuming that the activation energy is constant, an extrapolation of our results to ambient temperature finds that interlayer growth is negligible, suggesting long-term thermal stability in soft-x-ray projection lithography applications.

Abstract
Enterostatin is a peptide which has been found to decrease food intake with a specificity for the fat contained in the food. In this work we have investigated the effect of enterostatin (Val-Pro-Asp-Pro-Arg) and its proteolytic fragments, des-arg-enterostatin (Val-Pro-Asp-Pro) and the tripeptide Asp-Pro-Arg, on insulin secretion. It was found that enterostatin and desarg-enterostatin inhibited insulin secretion from isolated rat islets by 55.3% (P < 0.05) and 53.6% (P < 0.05) at 1.6 x 10(-4) M concentration, while the tripeptide Asp-Pro-Arg at 1.6 x 10(-4) M concentration had no significant effect and increased insulin secretion by 33.0%. Enterostatin at 200 ng after intraventricular administration was found to inhibit the intake of a high-fat diet by 45.0%, while des-arg-enterostatin (200 ng) had no effect, in agreement with previous findings. The tripeptide Asp-Pro-Arg (200 ng) had no effect on the intake of a high-fat diet compared to saline injection. The ability of enterostatin to inhibit high-fat food intake and decrease insulin secretion may be important for the prevention of obesity and type II diabetes, conditions linked through hyperinsulinemia.

Abstract
Previous studies of the sources of sex education are reviewed and critically analyzed. Most previous studies have examined the limited issue of which source of sex education is most important, examined the sources of only a few sexual topics, or used inadequate methodology. In the present study, more adequate data regarding the relative contributions of parents, schools, reading, and peers to information about each of 35 different sexual topics were obtained from a sample of 232 male and female, coitally experienced or inexperienced, midwestern college students. Individual reading and peers were the highest rated sources overall and on most of the subcategories of items. Schools were highly rated sources for topics related to the anatomy and physiology of sex and venereal disease. Coitally experienced (CE) individuals reported receiving more information overall than coitally inexperienced (CIE) individuals. However, contrary to previous speculations, CE and CIE individuals did not differ in the amount of information received from parents. Instead, CE individuals received more information through reading and from peers than did CIE individuals. Consistent with previous findings, amount of information received from parents correlated negatively with performance on a sexual knowledge test. Comparison of the present results with previous research suggested a developmental hypothesis, namely, that as individuals develop from early adolescence to young adulthood and become more sexually active, individual reading becomes a more important source of sexual information.

Abstract
The effect of single and repeated maternal marijuana smoke exposure on fetal breathing movements (FBMs) was investigated in 13 fetal lambs in the third trimester. These animals were surgically instrumented for long-term intrauterine recording of diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG). Maternal inhalation of marijuana smoke [1.84% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)] increased FBMs and resulted in a more continuous and regular breathing pattern. There was a significant increase in the number of breaths/h (p < 0.01) and the incidence of FBMs (p < 0.001) in the second hour. Breathing activity returned to presmoke level by the third hour. Duration of the longest breathing epoch was significantly increased from 16.8 +/- 3.3 min to 31.9 +/- 5.2 min (p < 0.005). Instantaneous breathing rate was much more stable in the second hour after marijuana exposure (p < 0.01). Inhalation of placebo smoke did not result in any significant change in either overall breathing activity or continuity and stability of the breathing rate. The effects of marijuana smoke on fetal breathing were not observed after repeated smoke exposure. These results suggest that tolerance develops rapidly to the respiratory stimulating effect of marijuana smoke in the fetus.

Abstract
The effects of emeriamine, a new anti-diabetic drug, on exocrine and endocrine pancreatic function in normal and diabetic rats have been studied both in vivo and in vitro. It was found that emeriamine dose-dependently normalized the symptoms of hyperingestion and hyperposia in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, with fasting glucose levels significantly decreased and insulin levels not changed. In STZ-induced diabetic rats, there was a significant increase in pancreatic lipase and trypsin contents and a sharp decrease in amylase content. These changes in lipase and trypsin, but not in amylase were normalized by administration of emeriamine. In the normal rat, emeriamine had no effect on either serum glucose or insulin levels, but significantly decreased the pancreatic amylase, lipase as well as trypsin contents by 68%, 58% and 51%, respectively. In vitro, emeriamine (10(-8) - 10(-4) mol l-1) had no effect on enzyme release from pancreatic acini either under basal or carbachol-stimulated conditions. Emeriamine inhibited glucose-induced insulin release from isolated pancreatic islets. In conclusion, emeriamine has an inhibitory effect on synthesis of pancreatic enzymes and on glucose-stimulated insulin release.

Abstract
The effect of ketanserin on arterial baroreflex-blood pressure control (ABR-BP) were studied in conscious freely-moving spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and renovascular hypertensive rats (RVHR). The ABR-BP was measured by using a new method comparing with the pressor responses (in area) to angiotensin II before and after blocking the baroreflex efferent pathway by guanethidine and methyl atropine. It was found that ketanserin enhanced markedly the ABR-BP in both groups of hypertensive rats (SHR: 51% to 74%; RVHR: 59% to 77%). This suggests that the enhancement of ABR-BP may be involved in the anti-hypertensive effects of ketanserin.

Abstract
The effects of opiates on fetal breathing movements (FBM) have been shown to be complicated, with stimulation at low doses and suppression at higher doses. Recent studies have shown that morphine-induced stimulation of FBM can be blocked by naloxonazine (NALZ), suggesting action at the mu 1 opioid receptor. To examine the role of delta receptors in modulating FBM, the effects of [D-Pen2,D-Pen5]-enkephalin (DPDPE) on breathing dynamics were studied in fetal lambs with chronically implanted diaphragmatic electromyographic electrodes. DPDPE given i.c.v. (4.6-465 nmol/hr) caused significant time and dose-related increases in the number of breaths/hr and the incidence of fetal breathing movements, without significant changes in blood pH, PCO2 or PO2. Higher doses resulted in an attenuation of the responses, with a significant decrease in breaths/hr at 465 nmol/hr. DPDPE also induced a much more continuous and regular breathing pattern. All DPDPE effects were completely abolished by pretreatment with i.v. naloxone, but were unaffected by naloxonazine pretreatment. Naltrindole did not alter the effects of DPDPE on breath number or incidence of FBM, but blocked the effects on continuity and regularity of the breathing pattern. These results demonstrate that DPDPE stimulates breathing activity as well as alters breathing dynamics in the fetal lamb. The differential sensitivity of these two actions to naltrindole suggest that they may be mediated by different delta receptor subtypes, and that the mu 1 receptor is not involved.

Abstract
Kainic acid (KA) is a known potent neuroexcitotoxin, although the biochemical mechanism producing its underlying neurotoxic effect is not quite clear. Histopathological examination of gerbil brains 24 h after systemic injection of KA revealed severe neuronal lesions in different regions of the brain, especially the cerebellar and hippocampal areas. We have detected free radical formation in the brain 1 h after KA administration by using an in vivo spin trapping technique. We have also observed increased lipid peroxidation in the brain after KA-treatment by analyzing thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and conjugated diene formation. Diminished brain specific (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity was also found 2 h after KA injection and persisted to 24 h. It is possible that the free radical reaction is a primary cause of neuronal degeneration after KA administration.

Abstract
The dynamic pattern of fetal breathing was studied in 17 fetal lambs with chronically implanted electromyographic electrodes in the diaphragm. The instantaneous breathing rate time series appeared similar on different time scales, with clusters of faster breathing rates interspersed with periods of relative quiescience, suggesting self-similarity. Distribution histograms of the interbreath intervals (IBIs) showed log-normal distribution for IBIs less than 1 s and inverse power-law distribution for IBIs greater than 1 s. The ratio of log-normal distribution to power-law distribution varied from approximately 2 at 102 days to approximately 30 by 130 days of gestation. Fast Fourier transform of the breathing rate time series revealed 1/f beta power spectra for all animals, with beta increasing linearly from 0.43 to 0.88 between 102 and 139 days. Studies in the newborn lamb showed further maturation in both the distribution characteristics of the IBIs, as well as in the 1/f power spectra, with beta approaching 1.0 at 2 days after birth. The inverse power-law relationship in the distribution of the IBIs, together with the 1/f beta power spectra, indicate scale invariance and suggest that fractal mechanisms are involved in the regulation of fetal breathing.

Abstract
Computerized analysis of blood pressure (BP) was used to study for the effects of ketanserin (Ket) on BP and blood pressure variability (BPV). Rats were instrumented chronically and BP was sampled every 4 ms by a computer from 2:00 to 14:00. Then a single dose of Ket (3 mg.kg-1) was given iv. BP and heart period (HP) were recorded for the next 30 min. The results showed that Ket lowered systolic BP (26.7 kPa to 21.1 kPa), diastolic BP (20.5 kPa to 15.8 kPa), and systolic BPV (1.3 kPa to 0.94 kPa). Otherwise, a positive relationship was found between antihypertensive effects of Ket and BPV. These findings may be of importance in antihypertensive treatment.

Abstract
Developmental changes in the continuity and stability of fetal breathing patterns were studied in 27 fetal lambs with chronically implanted electromyographic electrodes in the diaphragm throughout the third trimester (102-140 days). The results showed that there was a progressive decrease in the incidence of fetal breathing movements throughout the third trimester (P less than 0.001). This reduction in incidence of fetal breathing movements was due, in part, to a 20% decrease in the total number of breathing bursts at approximately 125 days (P = 0.05). The breathing patterns in both immature (less than 120 days) and mature fetal lambs were fragmented by a large number of pauses (interburst interval 6-10 s) and apneas (interburst interval greater than 10 s). Increase in gestational age was associated with a decrease in the number of pauses and apneas but longer apnea durations. The breathing pattern in fetuses less than 120 days old was more continuous than that in those greater than 120 days old, as demonstrated by significantly longer epoch durations (P = 0.013). There was no significant change in the continuity of the breathing pattern after 120 days. However, there was a significant increase in the stability of the instantaneous breathing rates throughout the third trimester. This was indicated by a significant increase in the percent of breathing bursts that occurred in stable clusters (P = 0.046), the number of bursts per cluster (P = 0.013), and cluster duration (P = 0.018). Thus an increase in stability appears to be the major developmental change in breathing control in late gestation.

Abstract
The effect of single and repeated marijuana smoke exposure on fetal EEG was investigated in the chronic fetal lamb model using power spectral analysis. Maternal inhalation of marijuana smoke (n = 9) resulted in a significant reduction in total power and power distribution in the delta (1-4 Hz) band, and an increase in power distribution in the faster frequencies in the first h after smoke inhalation. These EEG changes were not observed following maternal inhalation of placebo smoke (n = 5), nor in animals with 3-5 prior exposures to marijuana smoke (n = 5). These results suggest that the effects of marijuana smoke exposure on fetal EEG is short-lived and tolerance develops rapidly with repeated exposure.

Abstract
One hundred and twelve new cases of Graves' disease were treated by tapazole for 6 months and followed up for another 12 months. The initial dose was 30 mg/d. Clinical and biochemical euthyroidism was achieved within 1 to 3 months, then a maintenance was given until cessation of drugs at 6 months. One hundred and eleven cases completed the study. Remission and relapse were defined at the end of follow-up for 1 year according to the presence or absence of clinical manifestation of hyperthyroidism and the levels of T3 and T4. The results of the 12-month follow-up showed that 46 of 111 cases were in remission, and the remaining 65 cases suffered relapse. A logistic regression model with 4 variables was established, which included thyroid suppression rate and goitre size by palpation at the end of drug treatment, the level of T3 before therapy, and the patients' age. The model had 81.5% sensitivity, 84.8% specificity and 82.9% (92/111) accuracy in predicting the outcome of Graves' disease after withdrawal of drug for 1 year. The results were much better than any other univariate analysis in this study.

Abstract
The mechanism of action of low doses of morphine on breathing dynamics in the fetus was studied in 16 fetal lambs with chronically implanted electromyographic electrodes in the diaphragm. Morphine (0.15-2.5 mg/h) caused a significant dose-dependent increase in the number of diaphragmatic bursts per hour, with either an increase or no change in instantaneous breathing rate. There was also a significant dose-related increase in the continuity of the breathing pattern, as indicated by a decrease in the number of apneas per hour, and an increase in epoch duration. Morphine also had a significant effect on the stability of the breathing pattern, with an increase in the percentage of bursts that occurred in stable clusters. All of these effects were completely abolished by concurrent intracerebroventricular administration of either methylnaloxone or methylatropine or by pretreatment with intravenous naloxonazine. These results suggest that stimulation and stabilization of ventilatory activity in the fetal lamb by low doses of morphine are mediated via mu 1-receptors and involve central muscarinic pathways.

Abstract
The effects of naloxone and naloxonazine (an irreversible mu1 antagonist) administration on fetal breathing movement (FBM) patterns under control, physiologic conditions were studied in 10 fetal lambs with chronically implanted electromyogram electrodes in the diaphragm. Neither naloxone (6 mg/h) nor naloxonazine (34 mg) had any effect on the total number of diaphragmatic electromyogram bursts per hour, mean instantaneous breathing rate, or incidence of breathing. However, naloxonazine caused a more fragmented FBM pattern, as indicated by a significant increase in both the number of apneas and pauses per hour, along with decreased epoch duration. In addition, naloxonazine caused a significant reduction in the stability or regularity of the breathing rate. Naloxone had no effects on the dynamic pattern of the FBM. These results suggest that endogenous opiate peptides play a tonic role at the mu1, receptor to maintain both the continuity and stability of the FBM pattern in late gestation.

Abstract
We have determined the effect of H-DNA formation on the distributions of two ultraviolet (UV) light induced photoproducts--cyclobutane dipyrimidines and mean value of 6-4 dipyrimidines. A region of DNA containing the sequence (dT-dC)18.(dA-dG)18 was treated under conditions that specifically yield the triple-stranded H-y3 or H-y5 DNA structure and then irradiated with UV. The positions of cyclobutane dipyrimidines and mean value of 6-4 dipyrimidines were determined by T4 endonuclease V cleavage and by hot piperidine cleavage, respectively. Formation of H-DNA structures greatly decreased the photoproduct yield in the (dT-dC)18.(dA-dG)18 region but not elsewhere in the DNA. Suppression of photoproduct formation is greater in half of the repeat, reflecting whether the DNA is in the H-y3 or H-y5 conformation. Within the repeat, the suppression was less in the middle and toward the ends. Models for the suppression of photoproduct formation in H-DNA and the possible utility of our findings are discussed.

Abstract
An intrauterine probe electrode was inserted into 100 laboring women and 366 bipolar electrode combinations were tested. A noise-cancelling technique was used with the final 28 subjects to remove competing maternal cardiac signals. Twenty-four (86%) had fetal heart rate tracings with sufficient technical quality to allow determination of the baseline fetal heart rate.
