Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Arachnoid granulations (AGs) of the posterior wall of the temporal bone are a rare cause of spontaneous CSF leakage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and appearance of presumed AGs, evidenced by the posterior wall defects of the temporal bone with lobulated or scalloped margins on CT scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed CT scans of the temporal bone obtained in 1255 patients (573 men and 682 women; mean age, 42 years). We evaluated the prevalence, multiplicity, size, and location of presumed AGs in the posterior wall of the temporal bone. Preservation of the posterior wall of the mastoid air cells was also investigated and correlated with clinical features. RESULTS Thirty patients (2.4%), including 13 men and 17 women, aged 27-88 years (mean, 55 years), showed a total of 40 presumed AGs on CT scans. Their prevalence tended to increase with age. They were most commonly located at the lateral third of the temporal bone at a level of or above the common crus. Although 15 lesions in 11 patients also caused focal loss of the posterior wall of the mastoid air cells, symptomatic CSF leakage was found in only 2 patients, in both of whom the adjacent mastoid air cells were also opacified on CT scans. CONCLUSION Although rare, radiologists need to be familiar with the posterior wall defects of the temporal bone caused by presumed AGs on CT scans, because they might cause CSF leakage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melasma is an acquired, chronic hypermelanosis for which therapy remains a challenge. OBJECTIVES To compare the efficacy and safety of a triple combination [TC: fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%, hydroquinone (HQ) 4%, tretinoin 0.05%] vs. HQ 4% after 8 weeks of treatment of moderate to severe facial melasma in Asian patients. METHODS This was a multicentre, randomized, controlled, investigator-blinded, parallel comparison study. East and South-East Asian patients aged 18 years or older, with a clinical diagnosis of moderate to severe melasma, were enrolled in this study. Patients were enrolled at baseline and treated daily for 8 weeks with TC cream (one application at bedtime) or HQ cream (twice daily). There were four study visits: at baseline and weeks 2, 4 and 8. The primary efficacy variable was the melasma global severity score (GSS). Other outcome measures included Melasma Area and Severity Index, global improvement and patient satisfaction. Safety was assessed through the reporting of adverse events. RESULTS TC had superior efficacy to HQ for the primary variable: 77/120 patients (64.2%) on TC had GSS 'none' or 'mild' at week 8 vs. 48/122 patients (39.4%) on HQ (P < 0.001). The secondary efficacy variables confirmed these results. Patient satisfaction was in favour of TC (90/127, 70.8%, vs. 64/129, 49.6%; P = 0.005). More patients had related adverse events on TC (63/129, 48.8%) than on HQ (18/131, 13.7%) but most were mild and none was severe. CONCLUSIONS Efficacy in Asians and patient satisfaction were superior with the fixed TC than with HQ 4%.

Abstract
We developed wearable EDA sensor gloves using conducting fabric and embedded system. EDA(Electro-dermal Activity) signal is an electric response on the skin of the human body. There are SCL(Skin Conductance Level) and SCR(Skin Conductance Response) in EDA. Mostly, SCL consists of DC elements. On the other hand, SCR consists of AC elements. We use the relationship between the drowsiness condition and EDA signal We made EDA sensors using conducting fabric instead of Agcl electrode for a more suitable wearable device. And we used an embedded system for EDA signal acquisition and processing instead of a personal computer, which is connected to the EDA sensor gloves through conducting fabric lines. Also, the embedded system is linked to a Notebook PC that shows the results of EDA signal processing analysis and gives proper feedback to the user. This system, for example, can be used in detecting and preventing drowsiness driving accidents for automobile drivers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the short- and long-term efficacy and safety of abciximab and cilostazol in patients with acute MI and unstable angina undergoing intracoronary stenting. METHODS Acute-phase (7 and 30 days), 6-month and long-term composite outcomes involving death, myocardial infarction or urgent target vessel revascularization (TVR) together with other outcomes (composite outcomes involving death, MI and elective TVR with restenosis and stroke) were evaluated retrospectively in a total of 175 patients. Safety outcomes were assessed using data on the incidence of bleeding and thrombocytopenia at Day 7 and Day 30. RESULTS Of 175 patients, 83 (47.4%) patients received abciximab. At 7 and 30 days, the composite outcome for the group treated with cilostazol alone and that treated with abciximab in combination with cilostazol did not differ significantly. The composite outcomes at 6 months and 1 year were significantly lower in the abciximab plus cilostazol group (relative risk 0.35, 95% Cl 0.13 - 0.90, relative risk 0.28, 95% CI 0.10 -0.78, respectively). The incidence of major bleeding at the access-site and in the gastrointestinal tract and minor bleeding were significantly higher in the group receiving abciximab plus cilostazol group at 7 days (relative risk 3.33, 95% CI 1.66 - 6.65, relative risk 9.98, 95% CI 1.29 - 77.07, relative risk 1.96, 95% CI 1.06 - 3.62, respectively) and at 30 days (relative risk 3.33, 95% CI 1.66 - 6.65, relative risk 5.54, 95% CI 1.25 - 24.56, relative risk 1.96, 95% CI 1.06 - 3.62, respectively). CONCLUSION The combination of abciximab and cilostazol showed an improvement in major cardiac incidents at 6 months and 1 year of the treatment when compared to the group receiving cilostazol alone. However, abciximab did not improve the incidence of death but increased the risk of bleeding complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces chronic skin diseases, such as skin cancer and photoageing, and the mechanisms of this skin damage are associated with the upregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and decreased collagen synthesis. Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) radiation is a relatively new treatment modality for vitiligo and psoriasis. However, the mechanism of NB-UVB action on photoageing is not completely understood. Aims. We investigated the effects of NB-UVB on the expression of MMP-1, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and type I collagen in cultured human skin fibroblasts. METHODS Cultured human fibroblasts were irradiated with either NB-UVB (50-800 mJ/cm(2)) or broadband UVB (BB-UVB; 25 mJ/cm(2)). The expression of MMP-1, TGF-beta1 and type I collagen mRNA was determined by reverse-transcription PCR. Expression of MMP-1 and TGF-beta1 protein was determined by ELISA and that of type I collagen by Western blotting. RESULTS NB-UVB induced the expression of MMP-1 and reduced the expression of TGF-beta1 and type I collagen at the mRNA and protein levels in a dose-dependent manner. The expression of type I collagen protein decreased more after irradiation with 25 mJ/cm(2) of BB-UVB than 400 mJ/cm(2) of NB-UVB. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that NB-UVB irradiation reduces type I collagen synthesis in human skin fibroblasts by inhibiting TGF-beta1 expression and stimulating the release of MMP-1. It also suggested that the photoageing-related effects of NB-UVB are weaker than those of BB-UVB in vitro.

Abstract
A fission track analysis and alpha track analysis were developed to detect fissile particles such as uranium and plutonium isotopes as well as to identify particle-bound plutonium in contaminated soil or sediment. To record a reference point, a locator SEM grid electroplated with boron was used to obtain a recorded grid image on the Lexan or CR-39 detector. With the fission track technique, the track images of the grid coated with boron and the fissile nuclides on the CR-39 detector were clearly recorded so that the location of the fissile particles could be easily identified in the radio-contaminated soil matrix. With the alpha track technique, many of the hot particles in the BOMARC soil turned out to be contaminated with plutonium isotopes rather than uranium isotopes.

Abstract
We describe an unusual case of tumour lysis syndrome in a child with a high-grade lymphoma undergoing a staging laparotomy. The patient presented with a refractory ventricular arrhythmia, which required continuous resuscitation in the operating room and continuous venous-venous haemodialysis in the intensive care unit. This case report suggests that surgery is a possible trigger for developing tumour lysis syndrome, so anaesthetists should be alert to this possibility during surgery in patients with pre-existing high tumour burdens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thoracoscopy has been shown to reduce the inflammatory and immunologic response to surgical stress, as compared with corresponding open procedures in humans. The influence on the hemostatic system, however, has not been thoroughly evaluated. The current study aimed to compare the perioperative and immediate postoperative changes in cellular, hemostatic, and inflammatory parameters after a partial pericardectomy performed by either thoracoscopy or thoracotomy. METHODS For this study, 16 pigs were randomly assigned to have a partial pericardectomy performed thoracoscopically or by thoracotomy. Blood was collected intraoperatively, then 10 min, 3 h, and 6 h after surgery. Whole ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-stabilized blood and plasma were examined for cellular, hemostatic, and inflammatory parameters, respectively, and thromboelastography (TEG) was performed on citrated whole blood. RESULTS No significant difference in any of the parameters measured was found between the two groups except for the TEG parameter R-time, which was significantly shorter in the thoracoscopic group 3 h postoperatively. In both groups, a significant postoperative state of hypercoagulability and increase in inflammatory parameters was found. Additionally, pig blood showed a high degree of hypercoagulability in preoperative measurements, as compared with other species. CONCLUSIONS Partial pericardectomy performed by thoracotomy or thoracoscopy in pigs produces a surgical stress response of equal magnitude, as measured by cellular, hemostatic, and inflammatory changes.

Abstract
The involvement of blood microvessels, representing the anatomic site of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), in brain damage induced by prenatal exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and/or valproic acid (VPA) was studied in four-week-old rats. The immunogold procedure was applied for localization at the ultrastructural level of endogenous albumin and glucose transporter (GLUT-1) in three brain regions: cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus. Four groups of rats were used: (1) untreated control, (2) prenatally VPA-treated, (3) prenatally LPS-treated, and (4) prenatally LPS- and VPA-treated. The functional state of the BBB was evaluated as follows: (a) by its tightness, i.e., permeability to blood-borne albumin, and (b) by the expression of GLUT-1 in the endothelial cells (ECs). Using morphometry, the labelling density for GLUT-1 was recorded over luminal and abluminal plasma membranes of the ECs, also providing information on their functional polarity. No extensive increase of vascular permeability and/or any considerable dysfunction of the BBB in experimental groups nos. 2 and 3 were observed, although in solitary vascular profiles, increased endocytosis or even transcytosis of albumin by ECs was noted. In experimental group no. 4, some vascular profiles showed scanty leakage (microleakage), manifested by the presence of immunosignals for albumin in the perivascular area. Although some fluctuations in the expression of GLUT-1 occurred in all experimental groups, especially in group no. 3, a most pronounced and significant diminution of the labelling density, in all three regions of the brain, was observed in group no. 4. This finding suggests the synergistic action of prenatally applied LPS and VPA that affects specific transport functions of glucose in the microvascular endothelium. The diminished or disturbed supply of glucose to selected brain regions can be one of the factors leading to previously observed behavioral disturbances in similarly treated rats.

Abstract
Administration of spironolactone provides a beneficial effect in various animal models of renal injury. In this study, we investigated whether spironolactone prevents the progression of diabetic nephropathy through reduction of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) synthesis in type II diabetic rats. In addition, we evaluated the effect of aldosterone and spironolactone on CTGF and collagen production in cultured cells. Renal functional and morphologic changes were examined in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty rats with or without spironolactone treatment (20 mg/kg/day) for 8 months, as well as in non-diabetic age-matched Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka rats. Spironolactone treatment did not induce any significant differences in body weight, kidney/body weight ratio, serum creatinine concentration, blood glucose levels, or systolic blood pressure. However, urinary protein and albumin excretion were significantly decreased in the spironolactone treatment group, which was associated with amelioration of glomerulosclerosis. In addition, renal CTGF, collagen synthesis demonstrated marked decreases in the spironolactone treatment group. In cultured MC and PTC, aldosterone induced significant increases in CTGF gene expression and protein synthesis associated with increased collagen synthesis, which was abolished by prior treatment with spironolactone. However, aldosterone treatment did not induce transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 overproduction, and inhibition of TGF-beta1 by neutralization of TGF-beta1 protein did not significantly prevent aldosterone-induced CTGF production. These results suggest that the antifibrotic effects of spironolactone may be mediated by CTGF through a TGF-beta1-independent pathway in this animal model of diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
The occurrence of dental caries is mainly associated with oral pathogens, especially cariogenic Streptococcus mutans. Preliminary antibacterial screening revealed that the extract of Myristica fragrans, widely cultivated for the spice and flavor of foods, possessed strong inhibitory activity against S. mutans. The anticariogenic compound was successfully isolated from the methanol extract of M. fragrans by repeated silica gel chromatography, and its structure was identified as macelignan by instrumental analysis using 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR and EI-MS. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of macelignan against S. mutans was 3.9 microg/ml, which was much lower than those of other natural anticariogenic agents such as 15.6 microg/ml of sanguinarine, 250 microg/ml of eucalyptol, 500 microg/ml of menthol and thymol, and 1000 microg/ml of methyl salicylate. Macelignan also possessed preferential activity against other oral microorganisms such as Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguis, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei in the MIC range of 2-31.3 microg/ml. In particular, the bactericidal test showed that macelignan, at a concentration of 20 microg/ml, completely inactivated S. mutans in 1 min. The specific activity and fast-effectiveness of macelignan against oral bacteria strongly suggest that it could be employed as a natural antibacterial agent in functional foods or oral care products.

Abstract
A role for metalloproteinases in the pathological destruction in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and the irreversible nature of the ensuing cartilage and bone damage, have been the focus of much investigation for several decades. This has led to the development of broad spectrum metalloproteinase inhibitors as potential therapeutics. More recently it has been appreciated that several families of zinc dependent proteinases play significant and varied roles in the biology of the resident cells in these tissues, orchestrating development, remodelling, and subsequent pathological processes. They also play key roles in the activity of inflammatory cells. The task of elucidating the precise role of individual metalloproteinases is therefore a burgeoning necessity for the final design of metalloproteinase inhibitors if they are to be employed as therapeutic agents.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Eugenol is a topical analgesic agent widely used in the dental clinic. To elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying its analgesic action, we investigated the effect of eugenol on high-voltage-activated calcium channel (HVACC) currents in dental primary afferent neurons, and with a heterologous expression system. Dental primary afferent neurons were identified by retrograde labeling with a fluorescent dye, DiI. Eugenol inhibited HVACC currents in both capsaicin-sensitive and capsaicin-insensitive dental primary afferent neurons. The HVACC inhibition by eugenol was not blocked by capsazepine, a competitive transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) antagonist. Eugenol inhibited N-type calcium currents in the cell line C2D7, stably expressing the human N-type calcium channels, where TRPV1 was not endogenously expressed. Our results suggest that the HVACC inhibition by eugenol in dental primary afferent neurons, which is not mediated by TRPV1 activation, might contribute to eugenol's analgesic effect. Abstract
An accident and fire at the former McGuire Air Force Base and Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (BOMARC) site in New Jersey resulted in dispersion of weapons-grade plutonium in particulate form to the local environment. Soil samples collected at the BOMARC site were measured for their activities and isotopic ratios of Pu and Am isotopes by radioanalytical techniques. The activities of the Pu and Am isotopes in the BOMARC soil were markedly higher than fallout levels, and they decreased nearly exponentially with increasing particle size of the soil. The measured (241)Am activity was compared to calculated values based on decay of (241)Pu. The activity ratios of (238)Pu/(239,240)Pu, (241)Pu/(239,240)Pu, and (241)Am/(239,240)Pu observed in the BOMARC soil were much lower than those attributed to nuclear reprocessing plants and Chernobyl fallout. From the activity ratios of (241)Pu/(239,240)Pu and (241)Am/(239,240)Pu, the origin of the Pu isotopes was identified as weapons-grade and the time since production of the material was estimated. Furthermore, the atomic ratio of (240)Pu/(239)Pu in the BOMARC soil was remarkably lower than the fallout value influenced by nuclear weapons testing and the Chernobyl accident. The atomic ratio of (240)Pu/(239)Pu was very close to the value of the weapons-grade Pu detected from the Thule accident in Greenland. This work demonstrates the utility of radioanalytical measurements and decay calculations for defining characteristics of the source term and discriminating multiple processes that contribute to a source. Such an approach would also be needed to respond to a terrorist event involving an improvised nuclear device or radiological dispersal device.

Abstract
Few studies have addressed the incidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) or survival after ABO-incompatible allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). We analyzed the clinical outcome of ABO incompatibility after allogeneic PBSCT. A total of 89 consecutive adult patients with hematological diseases including 49 ABO-identical, 20 major, 15 minor, and five bidirectional ABO-incompatible transplants were enrolled from four medical centers in Korea. No significant difference in engraftment times, graft failure, or transfusion requirements between groups was noted. A clinical diagnosis of severe immune hemolysis or pure red cell aplasia was not made for any patient after transplantation. The incidence of acute or chronic GVHD did not statistically differ between groups. With a median follow-up duration of 13 months (range, 0.5-61 months), the 3-year overall survival estimates for the ABO-identical, major/bidirectional, and minor group were 44.6.0+/-9.0, 43.1+/-11.6, and 43.8+/-13.5%, respectively (P=0.8652), while the 3-year disease-free survival estimates were 33.8+/-7.6, 39.9+/-11.4, and 45.7+/-13.1%, respectively (P=0.8546). We observed that time to neutrophil, platelet, and red blood cell engraftment, transfusion requirements, incidence of acute or chronic GVHD, relapse, and survival were not influenced by ABO incompatibility after allogeneic PBSCT from HLA-matched sibling donors.

Abstract
AIM Peripheral nerve injuries are commonly encountered clinical problems and often result in severe functional deficits. In the present study, the effects of treadmill running on the recovery rate of locomotor function and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA following sciatic crushed nerve injury in rats were investigated. METHODS EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Comparative investigation was performed over 14 days. SETTING Experimental animal laboratory. PARTICIPANTS 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200+/-10 g. Animals were randomly assigned into 3 groups: the sham-operation group, the sciatic nerve injury group, and the sciatic nerve injury and running group. INTERVENTIONS The right sciatic nerve was crushed for 30 s using a surgical clip. Rats of the running group were made to run on a treadmill for 30 min once a day for 12 consecutive days. MEASURES Functional recovery was analyzed using a walking track analysis which can be quantified with the sciatic function index (SFI) and BDNF mRNA expression was analyzed using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS Sciatic crushed nerve injury showed characteristic gait changes showing decrease of SFI value and treadmill running significantly enhanced the SFI value. The level of BDNF mRNA expression was increased following sciatic crushed nerve injury and treadmill running significantly suppressed the sciatic nerve injury-induced increment of BDNF mRNA expression. CONCLUSIONS It can be suggested that treadmill running after peripheral nerve injury is effective in the functional recovery by inhibition on the over-expression of BDNF mRNA.

Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in vitro immortalizes primary B cells and generates B lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). These EBV-LCLs have been used for several purposes in immunological and genetic studies, but some trials involving these transformations fail for unknown reasons, and several EBV-LCLs do not grow in normal culture. In this study, we improved the immortalization method by CD19 and B-cell receptor (BCR) co-ligation. This method shortens the time required for the immortalization and generation of EBV-LCLs but does not alter the cell phenotype of the LCLs nor the expression of the EBV genes. In particular, the CD19 and BCR co-ligation method was found to be the most effective method examined. EBV-infected B cells induced by CD19 and/or BCR ligation expressed the intracellular latent membrane protein LMP-1 earlier than EBV-infected B cells, and the expression of intracellular LMP-1 was found to be closely related to the time of immortalization. These results suggest that the modified method, using CD19 and/or BCR ligation, may efficiently generate EBV-LCLs, by expressing intracellular LMP-1 at an early stage.

Abstract
This report describes an automated coupled column microbore-high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection for direct determination of verapamil in small volume of rat plasma. We used HPLC system consisting of three columns such as precolumn, intermediate and analytical column and six-port switching valve and injected small volume of rat plasma to the system without sample preparation. An aliquot of sample was directly injected into Capcell Pak MF Ph precolumn for clean-up and enrichment, 35 mm Capcell Pak C18, intermediate column for concentration of compounds and 250 mm Capcell Pak C18 analytical column for separation of compounds and two mobile phases are used as mobile phase A (50mM ammonium phosphate, pH 4.5) and B (50mM ammonium phosphate:acetonitrile=70:30 v/v). Analysis of verapamil and internal standard, propranolol was performed with direct injection of 10 microl of rat plasma to the system and were eluted at 22 and 12 min, respectively, at a mobile phase flow rate of 0.5 (mobile phase A) and 0.15 ml/min (mobile phase B). The peaks of verapamil and internal standard were good shapes and well separated from any interfering endogenous peaks during a total run time of 25 min. The calibration curve for verapamil showed good linearity (r(2)=0.9997) over the concentration range of 0.01-2.50 microg/ml. The mean RSD (%) values of intra-day (n=5) and inter-day (n=5) variability of verapamil ranged from 1.96 to 9.06 and 0.62 to 3.08%, respectively. The LOD and LOQ were 0.01 and 0.025 microg/ml, respectively, for verapamil using 10 microl of rat plasma. An automated coupled column microbore-HPLC method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study after intravenous injection of 3mg/kg of verapamil to the normal and dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced hepatofibrotic rats.

Abstract
Gaegurin 4 (GGN4) is an antimicrobial peptide of 37 amino acids isolated from the skin of a frog, Rana rugosa. GGN4 has a disulfide bond between the residues 31 and 37, which is highly conserved among the antimicrobial peptides isolated from skin of the genus, Rana. However, the role of this C-terminal heptapeptide motif is not well understood. In this work, we compared the membrane effects of the full-length GGN4 (C37) and GGN4 1-30 (C30), which is devoid of the C-terminal seven amino acids to elucidate the function of the C-terminal motif. C37 induced significantly larger membrane conductance (>10x) in the model lipid bilayers formed with acidic and neutral phospholipids and larger K+ efflux from gram-positive (>30x) and gram-negative bacteria. However, the pores induced by C37 and C30 were not different in their permeability to K+ over Cl- (permeability ratio of K+ to Cl- = 4.8-7.1). In addition, the pore-forming effect of C37 or C30 in acidic membranes was not different from that in neutral membranes. Furthermore, C37-induced K+ efflux was not significantly decreased by the reducing agent, dithiothreitol. The results indicate that C-terminal heptapeptide sequence plays an important role in maintaining the high pore-forming activity of GGN4, but does not participate in forming GGN4-induced pore structure. The disulfide bond in this region does not appear critical for such high ionophoric activity of GGN4.

Abstract
Mesenchymal progenitor or stem cells (MPCs) isolated from fetal blood, liver, and bone marrow are a population of multipotential cells that can proliferate and differentiate into multiple mesodermal tissues including bone, cartilage, muscle, ligament, tendon, fat, and stroma. The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize MPCs in the human umbilical cord. The suspensions of endothelial and subendothelial cells in cord vein were collected and cultured in M199 supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). Of 50 umbilical cord samples, 3 had numerous fibroblastoid cells morphologically distinguishable from endothelial cells. Fibroblastic cells displayed lack of expression of vWF, Flk-1, and PECAM-1, indicating the endothelial cell-specific marker. To investigate the differentiation potentials, the cells were cultured in adipogenic or osteogenic medium for 2 weeks. Fibroblast-like cells treated with adipogenic supplementation showed Oil red O-positive staining and expressed adipsin, FABP4, LPL, and PPARgamma2 genes by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In osteogenic differentiation, alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium accumulation were detected. RT-PCR studies determined that Cx43, osteopontin, and Runx2 genes were expressed in the osteogenic cultures. Among three cell lines cultured continuously for passage 10, two had normal karyotypes; however, one retained a karyotype of mos 46,XY[19]/47,XY,+mar[3]. These observations suggest that MPCs are present in human umbilical cord and possess several typical traits of MPCs.

Abstract
Based on single agent activities and the additive or synergistic effects of three individual drugs in gastric cancer, we performed a phase II study of a new regimen combining epirubicin, docetaxel and cisplatin (EDP) for unresectable gastric cancer. The patients with histologically confirmed metastatic or recurrent, unresectable gastric cancer and no history of palliative chemotherapy were eligible for this trial. In total, 40 mg m−2 epirubicin (reduced to 30 mg m−2 due to high incidence of febrile neutropaenia; 75%) intravenously (i.v.) over 30 min, followed by 60 mg m−2 docetaxel i.v. over 1 h, then 75 mg m−2 cisplatin i.v. over 1 h was administered every 3 weeks. Between January 2002 and February 2003, 30 patients (epirubicin 40 mg m−2, eight; 30 mg m−2, 22) were enrolled. The median age was 52 years (range, 33–68). The patients received a median of four cycles (range, 1–8). One patient (3%) achieved a complete response, 13 (43%) showed partial responses, 13 (43%) had stable diseases and three (10%) progressed. The overall response rate was 47% (95% CI, 28–66%), and the median duration of response was 5.0 months (95% CI, 3.0–7.0). The median time to progression was 4.1 months (95% CI, 2.4–5.9), and the median overall survival was 11.0 months (95% CI, 9.5–12.4). Grade 4 neutropaenia were observed in 41%, and febrile neutropaenia in 32%, out of the patients receiving 30 mg m−2 of epirubicin. Grade 3 nonhaematological toxicities included nausea, vomiting, anorexia and peripheral neuropathy. In conclusion, EDP is active in gastric cancer, with a manageable and predictable toxicity profile.

Abstract
Transformed hairy roots were efficiently induced from seedlings of Taraxacum platycarpum by infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes 15834. Root explants produced transformed roots at a higher frequency (76.5+/-3.5%) as compared to stem (32.7+/-4.8%) or cotyledon (16.2+/-5.7%). Hairy roots exhibited active elongation with high branching of roots on growth regulator-free medium. The competence of plant regeneration from non-transformed adventitious roots and transformed hairy roots was compared. The frequency of adventitious shoot formation from transformed roots was much higher (88.5+/-9.8%) than that of non-transformed roots (31.7 +/-9.5%) on hormone-free medium. Rooting of hairy root-derived adventitious shoots occurred easily on growth regulator-free medium but no rooting was observed on non-transformed shoots. The stable introduction of rol genes into Taraxacum plants was confirmed by PCR and Southern hybridization. Transgenic plantlets showed considerable differences in their morphology when compared to the corresponding wild-type (non-transgenic) plants. Plantlets formed from transformed roots had numerous fibrous roots with abundant lateral branches instead of the thickened taproots in non-transformed plants. The differences observed may reflect the modification of morphological root characters by introduction of rol genes.

Abstract
Noradrenergic inputs to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) play important roles in the regulation of neuroendocrine and autonomic functions. Previous reports show that noradrenaline increases the frequency of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) in a subpopulation of type II neurones, acting via alpha(1)-adrenoceptors (ARs), but reduces this frequency in most type I and another subpopulation of type II neurones, via alpha(2)-ARs on presynaptic GABA neurones. Here, we identified the subtypes of alpha-ARs mediating noradrenaline-induced increases and decreases in the sIPSC frequency of PVN neurones, by using slice patch recordings from PVN neurones. In both type I and II neurones, the noradrenaline-induced decrease in sIPSC frequency was completely blocked by BRL44408 (alpha(2A)-AR antagonist) at 1-3 micro M, which is approximately 1/100 of its equilibrium dissociation constant (pA(2) = 8.0), but not by prazosin (20-100 micro M, alpha(2B/C)-AR antagonist; pA(2) = 7.5). The effect of noradrenaline was mimicked by guanfacine (alpha(2A)-AR agonist) with an EC(50) of 0.1 micro M. In type II neurones, the noradrenaline-induced increase in sIPSC frequency was not blocked by any of the following antagonists: RS17053 (10 micro M, alpha(1A)-AR antagonist), BMY7378 (2 micro M, alpha(1D)-AR antagonist), prazosin (0.1 micro M, alpha(1)-AR antagonist; pA(2) = 10.5), or chloroethylclonidine (10 micro M, alpha(1B/D)-AR antagonist). However, the effect of noradrenaline was blocked by higher concentrations of prazosin (1 micro M) or RS17053 (100 micro M), suggesting the involvement of alpha(1L)-subtype, a low affinity form of alpha(1A)-ARs. Collectively, our results indicate that the alpha(2A)-, or alpha(1L)-ARs on the GABA neurones mediate the noradrenaline-induced decreases, or increases in the frequencies of the sIPSCs of PVN neurones, respectively.

Abstract
As a non-enzymatic, covalent binding between glucose and protein, glycation is a well-known cause of various forms of diabetic complications. This study was undertaken to determine the effect and mechanism of action of ginseng on the formation of glycated protein. A solution containing hemoglobin and glucose was incubated for 5 days by adding ginseng extract or glutathione. The quantitative measurement of glycated hemoglobin was determined using the ion capture component set. The anti-oxidative effect of ginseng and quercetin was determined through the TBA method. The amount of glycated hemoglobin (%GHb) significantly increased with the addition of glucose (27.8 mM) compared to the non-addition group. Nonetheless, this significantly decreased when ginseng extract (2 g/dl) was added and further dropped when glutathione (50 mM) was added. The amount of hemoglobin A1c (%HbA1c), a sub-fraction of glycated hemoglobin, was lower than that of glycated hemoglobin, but it showed a similar tendency. Compared to a non-addition group, the optical density of the organic layer that was separated through the addition of chloroform in oxidized linoleic acid significantly and dose-dependently decreased when ginseng extract or quercetin was added. These results suggest that the inhibitory effect of ginseng on the formation of glycated hemoglobin could be attributed to the anti-oxidative activity of ginseng.

Abstract
Metaplastic carcinoma of the breast is a rare disease. We describe the MRI findings with the correlative sonographic and pathologic features of two cases. On MRI, T2-weighted images demonstrate a relatively well-defined mass with high signal intensity cystic components. Dynamic enhancement subtraction images showed an early enhancing and delayed washout peripheral rim and non-enhancing internal components. A microlobulated, isoechogenic mass with cystic components was seen sonographically, and was histopathology related to necrosis and cystic degeneration. Although these features are not unique, metaplastic carcinoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for breast masses.

Abstract
The selection of chemotherapeutic regimens is challenging for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients whose diseases have failed to respond to anthracyline and taxane. Capecitabine has advantages of oral administration and favorable toxicity profiles. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of capecitabine and to identify the subgroup of patients who would potentially have benefit from capecitabine monotherapy in patients with anthracycline- and taxane-pretreated MBC. Female patients with MBC who had been previously treated with anthracycline and taxane received oral capecitabine 2500 mg/m(2) divided in two doses daily for 2 wk with 1-wk rest period. Between September, 1999, and December, 2002, a total of 38 patients were enrolled. Among the 36 evaluable patients, one patient achieved a complete response (CR), 9 patients had partial responses (PRs), and 13 patients had stable diseases (SDs). Response rate was 26% [95% confidence interval (CI), 12-40%] and the tumor control rate (TCR, CR+PR+SD) was 61% (95% CI, 45-77%). The median follow-up duration was 27.8 mo. The median duration of response was 8.9 mo, the median time to progression was 4.6 mo, and the median overall survival was 18.1 mo. The major toxicities were hand-foot syndrome, diarrhea, and emesis. There was no treatment-related death. The predictors of better overall survival were positivity of hormone receptor, disease-free survival longer than 1 yr, non-refractoriness to anthracycline, and fewer number (<or= 3) of involved organs. Capecitabine monotherapy is effective and well tolerated for MBC patients who had previously been treated with anthracycline and taxane. The TCR could predict overall survival as well as the objective response in this study, suggesting a possible role of TCR as a surrogate marker for survival in MBC patients on salvage chemotherapy. The patients who have relatively slow growing tumor and less tumor burden could have benefit from capecitabine monotherapy following anthracycline- and taxane-based chemotherapy.

Abstract
Monoamine oxidase (MAO) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic amines accompaned by the release of H2O2. Two subtypes, MAO-A and MAO-B, exist on the basis of their specificities to substrates and inhibitors. The regulation of MAO-B activity is important in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Twenty-seven species of plants used in traditional Chinese medicines, selected from an enthnobotanical survey, were used in an investigation of their inhibitory effect on MAO-B in rat brain homogenates. The 50% aqueous methanol extracts of four active extracts, Arisaema amurense, Lilium brownii var. colchesteri, Lycium chinense, and Uncaria rhynchophylla, exhibited the best activity and selectivity towards MAO-B with IC50 values of 0.44, 0.29, 0.40, and 0.03 mg/ml, respectively. A kinetic study of MAO-B inhibition by the four extracts using the Lineweaver-Burk plot for each active extract revealed the IC50 concentrations, and results show that: Ki = 0.59 mg/ml for A. amurense for the mixed-type mode, Ki = 0.58 mg/ml for L. brownii var. colchesteri for the mixed-type mode, Ki = 5.01 mg/ml for L. chinense for the uncompetitive mode, and Ki = 0.02 mg/ml for U. rhynchophylla for the uncompetitive mode. These may therefore be candidates for use in delaying the progressive degeneration caused by neurological diseases.

Abstract
A statistical prediction of terrestrial gamma radiation dose rate has been performed, covering the Kota Tinggi district of Peninsular Malaysia. The prediction has been based on geological features and soil types. The purpose of this study is to provide a methodology to statistically predict the gamma radiation dose rate with minimum surveying in an area. Results of statistical predictions using the hypothesis test were compared with the actual dose rate obtained by measurements.

Abstract
We studied whether the induction of autologous graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) has an antileukemic effect and consequently increases the survival of patients undergoing autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). In all, 22 acute myeloid leukemia patients with favorable and intermediate cytogenetic risk, in their first complete remission, were administered cyclosporine c.i.v. from day 0 to day +28 at a dose of 3.0 mg/kg per day and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) at 0.025 mg/m(2) s.c. every other day from day +14 to day +42 following autologous PBSCT. Natural-killer (NK)-cell activity assays and skin biopsies were performed. Successful engraftment was achieved in all patients at a median of 13 days without significant additional toxicity. Histologically confirmed cutaneous GVHD developed in 12 patients, and NK-cell activity was significantly augmented after autologous PBSCT in those patients (P=0.03). After a median follow-up duration of 37.7 months (range, 7.3-72.8), the 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 64.4 and 73.1%, respectively, without significant correlation with GVHD status or augmentation of NK-cell activity. These data suggest that the administration of cyclosporine and IFN-gamma following autologous PBSCT improves OS and DFS, which may be attributable to the antileukemic effect, although no difference in survival could be demonstrated between cutaneous GVHD-positive and -negative groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report the results of postoperative chemoradiotherapy after curative resection in gastric cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with gastric cancer staged IB to IV(M0) were treated with chemoradiotherapy after curative resection with extensive (D2) lymph node dissection. Nodal metastases were observed in 261 (90%) patients. The chemotherapy consisted of fluorouracil 400 mg/m(2) plus leucovorin 20 mg/m(2) for 5 days, followed by 4500 cGy of radiotherapy for 5 weeks with fluorouracil and leucovorin on the first 4 days and the last 3 days of radiotherapy. Two 5-day cycles of chemotherapy were given 4 weeks after the completion of radiotherapy. RESULTS Of 290 patients accrued, 229 (79%) patients completed chemoradiotherapy as planned. With a median follow-up of 49 months, 114 (34%) patients have relapsed: 33 (29%) locoregional relapses, 76 (67%) peritoneal relapses and 41 (36%) distant metastases. The 5-year overall and relapse-free survivals were 60% and 57%, respectively. Tolerance was acceptable, the main toxicity being neutropenia. CONCLUSIONS This postoperative chemoradiotherapy after curative resection of gastric cancer was feasible, with acceptable toxicities. Whether this adjuvant therapy in gastric cancer patients that have undergone a D2 lymph node dissection impacts on survival or reduces the incidence of relapses remains to be studied.

Abstract
The blood partition of KR-31378 between plasma and blood cells and the factors influencing the binding of the drug to 4% human serum albumin (HSA) using an equilibrium dialysis technique were evaluated. KR-31378 reached an equilibrium rapidly between plasma and blood cells of rabbit blood. The equilibrium plasma/blood cells concentration ratios were independent of initial rabbit blood concentrations of KR-31378, 1, 10 and 50 microg/ml; the values were in the range of 1.42-2.33. It took approximately 12-h incubation to reach an equilibrium between plasma and isotonic Søresen phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 containing 3% dextran ('the buffer'). The binding of KR-31378 to 4% HSA was dependent on HSA concentrations (the binding values were 25.3 and 32.0% for HSA concentrations of 2 and 5%, respectively), incubation temperature (the binding values were 48.8, 29.0 and 25.8% for 4, 22 and 37 degrees C, respectively), pHs of isotonic Sørensen phosphate buffer containing 3% dextran (the binding values were 17.7, 20.6, 22.8, 25.6 and 29.5% for buffer pHs of 5.8, 6.4, 7.0, 7.4 and 8.0, respectively) and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) concentrations (the binding values were 25.6, 29.9, 34.4 and 50.3% for AAG concentrations of 0, 0.08, 0.16 and 0.32%, respectively).

Abstract
The 70% aqueous acetone extracts of ten Taiwanese native plants were evaluated by various antioxidant assays, including 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl (.OH) radicals, and reducing power assay. In the present study, extracts of Acer buerferianum var. formosanum, Cleyera japonica var. morii, Cyclobalanopsis stenophylla var. stenophylloides, and Machilus zuihoensis exhibited stronger activity against DPPH radicals, and their IC50 values ranged from 5.4 to 8.3 microg/ml. The ten selected extracts effectively inhibited the formation of .OH generated in the Fenton reaction system. Among the extracts whose reducing power activities were determined, A. buerferianum var. formosanum, C. japonica var. morii, C. stenophylla var. stenophylloides, Eriobotrya deflex, and M. zuihoensis showed high activity. The results indicate the 70% aqueous acetone extracts of A. buerferianum var. formosanum, C. japonica var. morii, C. stenophylla var. stenophylloides, and M. zuihoensis with great potency in these assay systems and may be candidates for the development of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
This study addresses the clinical problem of long-term discolouration of silicone hand and maxillofacial prostheses. Seven (7) pigment hues, considered essential for achieving a suitable tissue colour-matched prosthesis, were compared for their colourfast property, across three selected proprietary formulations. In all, a series of 21 pigments, were tested for colourfastness. The pigments, presenting as suspensions (PS), pastes (PP) and dry pigments (PD), were exposed, over nine months, to ultraviolet light, elevated temperatures and varying concentrations of salinity. Colour change of the pigments was measured and expressed as Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) (L*, a*, b*) units. Pigment discoloration was significantly attributed to ultraviolet light. Pigmented and clear silicone samples showed a "yellowing" (+delta b*) effect. Lighter pigments became darker (-delta L*) in shade. Pigment samples at the elevated temperature of 50 degrees C showed significant but small colour change (delta E, 0.77 to 3.63). Only the master blue pigment (PS-4) recorded a higher delta E, 6.26 at 50 degrees C. At a moderate temperature of 35 degrees C, both pigmented and clear silicone test samples remained relatively colourfast. Comparison was made to control samples, stored in darkness, at 26 degrees C. The pigments were generally colourfast (deltaE<6 units) to saline solutions of 0.15 M and 5.0 M concentrations. Only the monastral red (PD-3) pigment recorded a delta E of 9.33, in 0.15 M normal saline, simulating the vulnerability of this pigment to the salinity of human sweat. Pigment hues were systematically ranked according to colourfastness. Pigment suspensions were more colourfast than pigment pastes.

Abstract
Exposure to cigarette smoke is known to increase the risk of the development of allergic disease. The mechanism is not well understood. In this study, we determined the effect of hydroquinone (HQ), a major metabolite of benzene present in large quantities in cigarette tar, on interleukin-4 (IL-4) production by CD4+ T cells. HQ significantly enhanced IL-4 production by keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH)-primed CD4+ T cells in a dose-dependent manner. The enhancing effect of HQ on IL-4 production was maximal at a concentration of 50 micro m. It increased the level of IL-4 production approximately 10-fold. HQ enhanced IL-4 mRNA expression and also IL-4 gene promoter activity, suggesting that the enhancing effect of HQ on IL-4 production may occur at the transcriptional level. Furthermore, the injection of KLH-primed mice with HQ resulted in a significant increase in the levels of IL-4 and immunoglobulin E. These findings provide evidence that HQ, a major component of cigarette tar, may enhance allergic immune responses by inducing the production of IL-4 in CD4+ T cells.

Abstract
90Sr activity was measured with the full spectrum DPM (FS-DPM) counting method after plotting the quench correction curves of 90Sr and 90Y, and the FS-DPM method was applied to determine the 90Sr in liquid waste samples. The optimum regions of 90Sr and 90Y were set for measuring 90Sr with the dual label DPM (DL-DPM) method. The direct measurement of purified 90Sr with spectrum unfolding techniques could overcome the disadvantages of the DL-DPM method. The activities of 90Sr in the 90Sr/90Y standardized solution measured with the FS-DPM protocols were close to the true activity. The concentrations of 90Sr in the liquid waste samples measured with the FS-DPM counting method were compared with those obtained with conventional methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The endoscopic hemostatic method has been introduced as a safe and effective mechanical approach to hemostasis for upper gastrointestinal bleeding related to Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS). However, the indications for when to use endoscopic treatment are debatable because many patients need only medical observation. The study was designed to evaluate the necessity and efficacy of endoscopic hemostasis in upper gastrointestinal bleeding related to MWS. PATIENTS AND METHODS From July 1994 to May 2000, we conducted a clinical trial in 76 patients who were found by endoscopy to have active bleeding (I, spurting; II, oozing), protruding visible vessels (III), and/or adherent clots (IV). Two study periods can be differentiated: in the first 3 years endoscopic treatment (n = 30) was prospectively analyzed and in the final 3 years medical treatment (n = 46) was analyzed in both cases to compare the outcome in MWS bleeding II-IV. In the first study period, in addition, endoscopic treatment was randomised to an injection method, using a mixture of hypertonic saline and epinephrine (HSE) (n = 14) and a hemoclipping or band ligation method (n = 16). RESULTS Rebleeding was observed in four of 14 patients who had received endoscopic hemostasis with HSE injection and one of 46 patients who had been managed with medical treatment. No rebleeding was found following hemoclipping or band ligation. While all rebleeding was in bleeding stigmata of the I (1) and II (4) grades, there was no rebleeding in protruding visible vessels (III) or in adherent clots (IV), regardless of treatment methods. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that endoscopic hemostasis is not necessary in patients without active bleeding stigmata, and the mechanical hemostatic method is more effective than HSE injection in patients with active bleeding stigmata.

Abstract
The 1-year prevalence of neck pain and possible risk factors among university academic staff were investigated. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all the full-time academic staff in one of the universities in Hong Kong. The 1-year prevalence of neck pain was investigated. The relationship between individual factors, job nature, psychosocial factors, and neck pain were also analyzed. The 1-year prevalence of neck pain among after being an academic staff was 46.7%. A significant association was found between gender and neck pain (p = 0.02). The percentage of female academic staff with neck pain (62%) was higher than that in male staff (38%). This matched the results of other studies, which demonstrated that neck pain was more prevalent in women. There was a significant association between head posture during computer processing and neck pain (p = 0.02). Among those with neck pain during computer processing, 60.5% had a forward head posture. However, a low correlation between psychosocial factors and neck pain was demonstrated (r = 0.343). Academic staff in tertiary institutions could be considered as a high-risk group of job-related neck pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Downregulation of TGF-beta receptors is implicated in colon cancer development. Inactivation of either of the two transmembrane serine/threonine kinases, TGF-beta1 types I/II receptors, is now implicated in carcinogenesis, especially gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. METHODS We generated transgenic mice, called pS2-dnRII or ITF-dnRII, of which the dominant negative mutant of the TGF-beta type II receptor was expressed under the control of tissue-specific promoters, the pS2 promoter for stomach and ITF for intestine. They were either infected with H.pylori (ATCC 43504 strain, CagA+ and VacA+) or administered with azoxymethane to determine the significance of loss of TGF-beta signalling in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. RESULTS Gastric adenocarcinoma developed in pS2-dnRII mice, whereas only chronic active gastritis was noted in wild-type littermates after 36 weeks of H.pylori infection. Mice lacking in TGF-beta signalling specifically in the stomach showed a significantly higher proliferation cell nuclear antigen-labelling index when infected with H.pylori than wild-type littermates (P < 0.01). Development of colonic aberrant crypt foci was provoked in mice by intraperitoneal injections of azoxymethane, and ITF-dnRII mice showed significantly higher incidences of ACF and colon cancers than wild-type littermates. CONCLUSIONS Maintaining normal TGF-beta signalling in the gastrointestinal tract seems to be important either for preventing abnormal mucosal proliferation, or for suppressing or retarding carcinogenesis.

Abstract
1. Transcription factors such as NF-kappa B provide powerful targets for drugs to use in the treatment of cancer. In this report parthenolide (PT), a sesquiterpene lactone of herbal remedies such as feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) with NF-kappa B inhibitory activity, markedly increased the degree of human leukaemia HL-60 cell differentiation when simultaneously combined with 5 nM 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)). PT by itself did not induce HL-60 cell differentiation. 2. Cytofluorometric analysis indicated that PT stimulated 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced differentiation of HL-60 cells predominantly into monocytes. 3. Pretreatment of HL-60 cells with PT before the 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3) addition also potentiated the 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced HL-60 cell differentiation in both a dose- and a time-dependent manner, in which the enhanced levels of cell differentiation closely correlated with the inhibitory levels of NF-kappa B binding activity by PT. 4. In contrast, santonin, a sesquiterpene lactone without an inhibitory activity of NF-kappa B binding to the kappa B sites, did not enhance the 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced HL-60 cell differentiation. 5. In transfection experiments, PT enhanced 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced VDRE-dependent promoter activity. Furthermore, PT restored 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced VDRE-dependent promoter activity inhibited by TNF-alpha, an activator of NF-kappa B signalling pathway. 6. These results indicate that PT strongly potentiates the 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)-induced HL-60 cell differentiation into monocytes via the inhibition of NF-kappa B activity and provide evidence that inhibition of NF-kappa B activation can be a pre-requisite to the efficient entry of promyelocytic leukaemia cells into a differentiation pathway.

Abstract
We assayed for germline single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TNFB and TNFA genes in patients with breast cancer. SNPs were observed in the first intron of TNFB (G/A) and at -1031 (T/C), -863 (C/A), -857 (C/T) and -308 (G/A) in the promoter region of TNFA from peripheral leucocytes in 95 breast cancer patients and 190 healthy subjects as controls. The TNFB*G/TNFB*G homozygote (23.2% vs. 5.8%, P= 0.001) was predominant in patients, while the TNFB*A/TNFB*A homozygote was less frequent in patients (34.7% vs. 46.3%, P = 0.041) than in the control subjects. Breast cancer was not associated with SNPs in the TNFA promoters. Although the TNFB SNP failed to associate with any clinicopathological parameter of breast cancer, a substantial difference in pathology among tumour stages for the -857 SNP in TNFA was detected. These results indicate that TNFB has both tumorigenic and antitumorigenic capabilities depending on the genotype: the TNFB SNP TNFB*G/TNFB*G genotype gave an increased risk for breast cancer and that of TNFB*A/TNFB*A gave resistance to breast cancer (OR = 5.3395%; CI: 2.33-12.19). The results suggest that the TNFB*G allele plays some role in the tumorigenesis or activation of dormant tumour cells, but the TNFB*A allele induces some function(s) leading to the inhibition of tumorigenesis.

Abstract
We report one case of a familial complex chromosomal rearrangement (CCR) involving four different chromosomes 5, 10, 16 and 18. The CCR was detected prenatally at 20 weeks' gestation because of advanced maternal age and history of recurrent miscarriages. Cytogenetic analysis of cultured amniotic fluid cells with GTG banding showed a 46,XX,t(5;16;10;18)(q13;q22;q11.2;q21) karyotype. Parental cytogenetic study revealed that the mother has the same CCR. RBG banding, high resolution banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to characterize further and confirm the conventional banding data. No physical abnormalities were shown in the targeted fetal ultrasonography examination. The parents decided to continue the pregnancy. The child is now 2 years old and has neither congenital anomalies nor evidence of delayed psychomotor development. The fetal targeted ultrasound and FISH analysis helped us reassure fetal status.

Abstract
Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a common and serious regimen-related toxicity after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). There is no safe and proven therapy for established VOD, and focus has been on its prevention. Previous studies have shown that a continuous infusion of unfractionated heparin or ursodiol may reduce the incidence of VOD. In order to compare the efficacy of heparin plus ursodiol with that of heparin alone, we conducted a prospective, randomized study involving 165 consecutive patients who underwent HSCT for a variety of disorders. Eighty-two patients were assigned to receive heparin plus ursodiol, and 83 were assigned to receive heparin alone. Thirteen and 16 patients were diagnosed as having VOD in the heparin plus ursodiol group and the heparin alone group, respectively (15.9% vs 19.3%; P = 0.348). Eighty-nine percent of the heparin plus ursodiol group and 89.2% of the heparin alone group were surviving at day 100 post-HSCT (P = 0.298). The only independent variable associated with an increased risk of VOD was an allogeneic type of HSCT (P = 0.018). In conclusion, this study shows that there is no difference in efficacy between heparin plus ursodiol and heparin alone for the prevention of hepatic VOD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) according to the Revised European-American Lymphoma (REAL) classification. From 1994 to 1999, 78 patients were diagnosed with PTCLs, excluding cutaneous T-cell lymphomas and T-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. The distribution of the histological subgroups were: PTCL unspecified (PTCL-U), 40%; angiocentric lymphoma, 32%; anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), 17%; angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILD), 6%; intestinal T-cell lymphoma, 3%; and panniculitic T-cell lymphoma, 3%. Patients with angiocentric lymphoma presented with favourable prognostic factors, whereas those with AILD presented with unfavourable prognostic factors. Most patients were treated with doxorubicin-containing combination chemotherapy (with or without radiation therapy). The overall complete remission rate was 61.2% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 48.5-72.8%) and the 5-year probability of failure-free survival was 33.5%. Median survival of all patients was 45 months (range 0-64+ months) and the 5-year probability of survival was 36.2%. In the multivariate analysis, only the International Prognosis Index (IPI) was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (P<0.01). Taken together, the proportion of angiocentric lymphoma in this study was higher than that in the studies of Western countries. PTCL responds poorly to treatment with low survival rates and the IPI is a useful prognostic factor for PTCL.

Abstract
We have developed a multi-channel time scaling method that is suitable for activity measurement of beta emitting nuclides by means of 3-PM Liquid Scintillation Counting, using non-extending dead times and linear amplifiers. Since it enables to obtain the accidental coincidences directly, the true values for both double and triple coincidences are determined by simply taking into account the correction due to dead times. The advantages of the method are demonstrated by studying the activity of 204Tl and 14C. The measured results were compared with those derived by using the mathematical formulae.

Ergodic theory has been approached from the side of the time averages with correlation functions from many-body models. The condition for ergodic behavior is formulated in terms of infinite products of certain numbers associated with time evolution. Physical properties that make a model ergodic are identified.
