Abstract
A crude antigenic metacestode extract from Echinococcus vogeli was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and showed strong binding activity with serum antibodies from patients with polycystic echinococcosis. Major cross-reactions occurred with serum antibodies from patients with cystic and alveolar echinococcosis and from patients infected with other species of helminths. An E. vogeli antigen fraction, Ev2, was subsequently purified by immunosorption. The respective Ev2 ELISA demonstrated improved specificity, allowing discrimination of non-Echinococcus infections from polycystic echinococcosis. Based upon the calculation of a comparative (Ev-crude ELISA versus Ev2 ELISA) reactivity index, it became possible to discriminate all cystic echinococcosis cases, but only some alveolar echinococcosis cases, from polycystic echinococcosis. Immunoblot analyses revealed an antibody banding pattern highly conserved among polycystic, cystic, and alveolar echinococcosis. However, immunoblotting reliably distinguished between echinococcosis and all non-Echinococcus infections.

Abstract
Methanol-powered vehicles are being introduced in the United States as a solution to air pollution. This study assessed whether acute exposure to methanol vapor at the current industrial threshold limit value of 200 ppm for 4 hr has adverse effects on human neurobehavioral performance. Twenty-six healthy subjects (15 men, 11 women; ages 26-51 years) were exposed to methanol or water vapor for 4 hr while seated in a chamber. The subjects served as their own controls in a randomized, double-blind study design. The variables assessed were serum and urine methanol and formate levels; visual performance (color discrimination and contrast sensitivity); and neurophysiological (auditory evoked potentials) and neurobehavioral performances. Exposure to methanol increased serum concentrations and urinary excretions of methanol, but did not affect formate levels. Overall visual, neurophysiological, and neurobehavioral test outcomes were not significantly affected, unless certain between-subject variables are considered. Slight effects on P-300 amplitude and Symbol Digit testing were noted. We conclude that acute exposure of healthy people to low concentrations of methanol had little effect on these measures of neurobehavioral performance.

Abstract
Mature nonlactating Altamurana ewes (n = 168) were synchronized in the seasonal anestrus period with FGA-impregnated intravaginal pessaries for 12 d. In Experiment 1, 48 ewes were divided into a 3 x 4 factorial design for anti-PMSG monoclonal antibody (AP) bioassay test. Concomitant injections of PMSG (1000, 1500, 2000 IU) and AP (0, 1, 2, 3 microl/IU PMSG) were given, and ovarian response was evaluated by laparoscopy. In Experiment 2, 120 ewes were divided into 8 experimental groups (n = 15 per group). The ewes treated with 1000 or 1500 IU PMSG at -24 h from sponge removal were given AP intravenously at 50 h after pessary withdrawal, 12 or 24 h after the onset of estrus, while the controls did not receive AP. Blood samples were collected from ewes (n = 6) treated with 1500 IU PMSG with or without anti-PMSG. Ovarian response and embryo production were evaluated on Day 7 after sponge removal upon laparotomy. It was found that 1 microl AP was effective in neutralizing 1 IU PMSG. No significant differences in serum concentrations of progesterone were observed among the groups of superovulated ewes. Estradiol-17 beta levels were reduced following AP treatment 12 h after the onset of estrus. At a lower dosage of superovulatory treatment (1000 IU PMSG), AP injected at 12 or 24 h after the onset of estrus significantly lowered large follicles (P < 0.01) and increased the rate of ovulation (P < 0.05). Moreover, embryo production showed a more than two-fold increase (P < 0.01) of viable embryos following AP injection at 12 or 24 h after the onset of estrus (3.2 to 3.3 vs 1.3, with vs without anti-PMSG). It is concluded that superovulatory treatment with 1000 IU PMSG plus AP administered at a fixed time after the onset of estrus may improve ovarian response and the yield of viable embryos in ewes.

Abstract
The effects of saccharose and isomalt on the rat's gum carbohydrate metabolism have been studied through evaluation of the activity of hexokinase (HK), phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI), lactatedehydrogenase (LDH), glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD), phosphofructokinase (PFK) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM). The values obtained by administering a drink sweetened with 10% isomalt are significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those obtained in the animals that had the drink sweetened with 10% saccharose. Administration of the same amount of drinks through gastric tube showed an enzymatic activity similar to that of the rats in the control group. Intermediate metabolites of the glycidic metabolism would then be responsible for the lesions of the oral epithelium, as those obtained by administering high levels of vitamin A, through an increased synthesis of acids. The increase of HK, PFK and PK activity with respect to the control group in those rats that had the isomalt on the rat's gum glycolytic cycle enzymes was found to be lower than that detected for other polyalcohols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal fume fever is a flu-like illness caused by zinc oxide fume inhalation and mediated by unknown mechanisms. It is one of a group of work-related febrile inhalational syndromes. We studied bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) obtained from cigarette smoking and nonsmoking human volunteers after controlled exposure to purified zinc oxide fume to explore the possible roles of proinflammatory cytokines in this condition. METHODS We studied 14 volunteers after inhalation exposure to purified zinc oxide fume and after sham exposure to air. The mean cumulative exposure was 537 +/- 232 mg min per cubic meter elemental zinc. Twenty hours after exposure we performed BAL. We analyzed BAL cells and studied BAL supernatant for cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha), interleukin(IL)-8, and IL-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). RESULTS Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) were significantly increased in the BAL fluid obtained post-exposure compared to sham (mean difference = 41.3 +/- 16.8 x 10(3) per mL; p < 0.05). Cumulative zinc exposure positively correlated with exposure-sham differences in BAL supernatant concentrations of both TNF (r2 = 0.58; p = .002) and IL-8 (r2 = 0.44, p = 0.01). Exposure-sham concentration differences in BAL supernatant IL-8 and BAL PMNs were also positively correlated (r2 = 0.60; p < 0.001). Cigarette smoking was not associated with exposure-sham differences in BAL TNF or IL-8, but did demonstrate a packs-per-day dependent increase in BAL supernatant IL-1 (t = 2.3, p = 0.04) post-exposure compared to sham, after taking into account the zinc exposure response. CONCLUSIONS Purified zinc oxide fume inhalation causes an exposure-dependent increase in proinflammatory cytokines and PMNs in the lung. This supports a role for cytokine networking in mediating metal fume fever.

Abstract
Lead concentrations in blood samples typical of unexposed individuals are determined by using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry at a disposable 287-element (15-35-microns diameter) carbon microarray electrode. Analysis of a series of low Pb-containing samples (blood [Pb] = 17 to 92 micrograms/L) by standard addition gives good accuracy (average bias vs graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy = -4 micrograms/L) and precision (pooled SD = 7 micrograms/L). The signal/noise ratio is improved by about an order of magnitude over that found at a single carbon disk (10 microns diameter), resulting in a detection limit (for the microarray) of 5 micrograms/L for a 60-s deposition of sample.

Abstract
We report the fractionation of freshly isolated subsets of tonsillar lymphocytes according to cell density and double sorting for the differential expression of CD10 and CD77, and their analysis for the presence of Epstein Barr virus genome by nested PCR. All the subsets of tonsillar lymphocytes gave unequivocal evidence for the presence of EBV DNA, when obtained from EBV seropositive individuals. Confirmation of all cases examined demonstrates that B lymphocytes from the germinal centers of tonsils are also involved in carrying the EBV infection in vivo.

Abstract
The paper reviews a previously published case of hydatid disease in the human heart of a Brazilian person who died of tetanus. Based on present knowledge about the distinguishing characteristics of Echinococcus granulosus, E. vogeli, and E. oligarthrus, it was recognized that the infection was due to E. oligarthrus, mainly based the morphologic features of the hooklets of the protoscolex. This is the second human infection due to E. oligarthrus and the first showing wall features of cysts. Therefore, some human infections of polycystic hydatid disease observed outside the range of the bush dog, the only definitive host of E. vogeli (Panama to Northern Argentina), may be due to E. oligarthrus rather than to E. vogeli.

Abstract
A method for blood lead ([Pb]) analysis is developed based on square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) in an Hg(2+)-containing solution using a 10-microns-diameter carbon disk ultramicroelectrode. SWASV eliminates interference from O2 in unsparged blood-derived sample solutions, and filtration of acidified samples through nitrocellulose reduces the concentration of interfering substances, increasing the size and improving the uniformity of peak currents. Blood [Pb] values obtained by SWASV are compared with blood [Pb] values determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry; good accuracy and reasonable coefficients of variation in the range 10.6-20% (average of 13.5%) are found for blood [Pb] ranging from 4 to 30 micrograms/dL. Preliminary experiments using a carbon disk microarray electrode suggest future improvements in sensitivity.

Abstract
34 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided to receive one of 3 diets; a standard diet, a defined formula diet (DFD) or DFD plus fibre, which were administered through a catheter using a pump infusion system. Serum levels of selenium, molybdenum, and chromium were measured before and after 4 weeks of the respective diets. Rats fed the standard diet adequately maintained serum levels of the 3 minerals, but in those fed DFD the levels were reduced. Selenium levels declined by 14.5% in rats fed DFD and by 23.4% in rats fed DFD plus fibre. Molybdenum levels decreased by 23.6% and 22.8% in rats fed DFD with and without fibre, respectively. Chromium levels decreased by 45.5% in rats fed DFD and by 67.7% in rats fed DFD plus fibre. These results corroborate previous evidence that prolonged enteral or parenteral feeding may deplete ultratrace minerals and suggest that addition of ultratrace minerals to DFD may be beneficial.

Abstract
This study was carried out to validate the prevalence of known diabetes estimated from three different simultaneous sources (medical records from out-patient departments, registers and pharmaceutical prescriptions) as against the diagnosis of family doctors who had received ad hoc training before the study. To this effect, a selected Local Health Unit (Unità Sanitaria Locale or USL) in Bari, southern Italy, was examined. 2917 diabetic patients were found, with a 2.82% prevalence. The prevalence of known diabetes estimated from separate sources was 1.41% from medical records, 1.52% from the registers and 1.59% from prescriptions. With reference to the family doctor's conclusions, sensitivity, positive predictive value and efficiency of medical records were 49.8%, 92.5% and 57.4% of USL registers 53.8%, 95.6% and 61.8% of prescriptions 56.3%, 71.2% and 47.9%. 46% of the diabetic subjects were only identified from one source. In conclusion, by combining several sources of information together, a higher number of diabetic patients are identified than would be done by using separate sources; also, active cooperation from the family practitioners seems to be needed to correct the large number of false positive patients (n = 798) mostly identified from prescriptions.

Abstract
Methyl ethyl ketone is a common solvent but data on overdose in humans are scarce. We report a case of co-ingestion of methyl ethyl ketone together with methanol associated with a hyperosmolar coma without anion gap metabolic acidosis. Blood levels of methyl ethyl ketone and its metabolite, 2-butanol, indicated that this solvent did contribute approximately 20 mosm/L to an observed osmolar gap of 99 mosm/L. At the levels detected, methyl ethyl ketone may have inhibited methanol metabolism, contributing to the low serum formate (1.3 mmol/L) and normal anion gap despite a blood methanol of 67 mmol/L.

Abstract
Title compounds were prepared by a cyclocondensation reaction between 8-(2-aminophenyl)xanthines and trialkyl orthoesters. Some of them showed activities as A1-adenosine receptor antagonists with binding values in the micromolar range. Results are discussed with reference to 1,3-dialkyl-8-arylxanthines. Considerations on the role played by both electronic and conformational factors are also reported.

Abstract
There is some debate as to the extent to which Schistosoma haematobium haematuria may be the cause of anaemia. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of a single 40 mg kg-1 dose of praziquantel on anaemia. Since praziquantel does not reduce the hookworm intensity of infection (a major cause of anaemia in children in the area) changes in the prevalence of anaemia in the study population should be due only to the elimination of S. haematobium. Seven hundred and seventy-one primary schoolboys from Bertoua (East Cameroon) were divided into four groups: high infection, moderate infection treated with praziquantel or placebo, and non-infected. Haemoglobin concentrations of the children were determined at the onset of the study and 6 months after the praziquantel intervention. Mean haemoglobin concentrations were not significantly different for no infection or for mild or heavy infection by S. haematobium. A factorial analysis of variance using S. haematobium intensity of infection, malaria and intestinal parasite infections and age as independent variables and haemoglobin concentration as the dependent variable show that only age and malaria infection show a significant relationship with haemoglobin concentration. Despite treatment with praziquantel, all the children in the treatment groups had lower mean haemoglobins 6 months after intervention. A factorial analysis of variance using age, malaria infection and the treatment category as independent variables and the difference in haemoglobin concentration as the dependent variable shows that only malaria infection showed a significant relationship with haemoglobin concentration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Our objective was to determine in a Cameroonian school population the effect of mild to moderate S. haematobium infection intensity on growth and development of children before and 6 months after praziquantel treatment. Previous studies have yielded contradictory results. Children from Bertoua schools were divided into four study groups: heavily infected (> 500 eggs 10 ml-1), moderately infected (1-499 eggs 10 ml-1) treated with praziquantel, a similar group treated with placebo, and an uninfected control group. Anthropometric measures--height for age per cent median (HAPM), and weight for age per cent median (WAPM)--were significantly higher among the uninfected children. Stepwise regression analysis showed that S. haematobium and Ascaris infections were the strongest predictors of the HAPM with hookworm and malaria infections playing a lesser role. Post treatment comparison of the praziquantel treatment group and the placebo group showed no significant differences for the anthropometric indicators except for mid-arm circumference. Longer observations of growth after treatment as well as monitoring of the rate of reinfection would be necessary to understand better the effect of S. haematobium on growth.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H.p.) is a microorganism involved in peptic ulcer disease. To clarify the role of human dental plaque as a reservoir of H.p. and to compare different methods of investigation the authors studied 20 patients, 17 males main age 56 +/- 12 and 3 females 52 +/- 7, gastro-duodenal H.p. positive. The trial was carried out by cultural, biochemical and microscopical plaque analysis. Cultural and microscopical method were H.p. positive in 80% patients, urease in 100%, alkaline phosphatase in 80%, gamma glutamyltransferase in 70%, nitrate in 70%. To minimize the possibility of false results in H.p. plaque analysis it is necessary to use the three methods simultaneously. Further trials both on human plaque and on food and beverages will be useful to clarify the role of H.p. in human pathology.

Abstract
We examined 14 cases of reactive arthritis seen during the four year period 1982/1985 out of a total of 7,380 admissions. The average age of the patients was 40.1 years, while hospitalisation averaged 15.6 days. More than half the patients presented oligoarthritis manifestations which were also characterized by asymmetry and migratory behavior. Visceral manifestations were noted in 10 of 14 patients (71.4%). Etiological diagnosis was arrived at in only two cases, whereas half the cases showed no positive enteral or urogenital infectious antecedents. The HLA B-27 determination resulted positive in 25% of the cases. This is highly significant (p < 0.01) when compared to the control group 4% positivity. The follow-up was carried out medially for 4 years in all patients and evidenced only one case of persistent joint inflammation at the knee level and another case of relapsing uveitis. This study, performed on a random group of patients hospitalized in a General Medicine Department, confirms for the most part data appearing in the literature.

Abstract
Results of studies on the accuracy of the resistive index as a predictor of acute renal transplant rejection have varied widely. Clinical evaluations are limited by the inability to control the numerous coincidental factors that affect vascular resistance. We performed a controlled study in dogs to isolate the effects of acute tubular necrosis, cyclosporine toxicity, and acute rejection on the resistive index, and to compare them with a population of normal control subjects. By doing so, we hoped to identify the patterns of change in the resistive index over time and possibly explain the wide spectrum of resistive index data reported in the literature. Resistive index, a parameter calculated from relative systolic and diastolic velocity, indicates parenchymal resistance to perfusion. Since an increase in renal length also has been reported useful in predicting rejection, we studied changes in length in each of the isolated conditions. The normal control group (four dogs) had heterotopic autotransplantation with minimal cold ischemic time. The acute tubular necrosis group (six dogs) had heterotopic autotransplantation with 1 hr of warm ischemic time. The cyclosporine toxicity group (four dogs) was allowed approximately 3 months to heal from heterotopic autotransplantation. Very high (toxic) doses of cyclosporine were then administered. The acute rejection group (five dogs) had heterotopic allografting with minimal cold ischemic time. No medications were administered. In all groups, the abnormalities induced were confirmed by biopsy. Creatinine levels were also used to monitor cyclosporine toxicity. In the normal control and acute tubular necrosis groups, resistive index increased immediately after surgery, returning to baseline within 10 days. Renal length increased slightly in both groups, but the duration of increase was longer in the acute tubular necrosis group. No significant change in resistive index or renal length was seen in the cyclosporine toxicity group. In the acute rejection group, an initial decrease in resistive index during the mild to moderate phase was followed by a rapidly progressive increase with worsening rejection. Renal length increased progressively beginning immediately after surgery. Our study determined the patterns of change in resistance and renal length over time as caused by the isolated pathologic states. Our finding that vascular resistance decreased in mild to moderate acute rejection was unexpected, since almost all the literature reports resistive index elevation. This may explain some of the conflicting results obtained in Doppler investigations of rejection. Our results on renal length reinforce the positive clinical reports of its predictive value in rejection.

Abstract
The Polymerase Chain reaction technique has been used in order to detect and amplify a specific region of mtDNA, in a total DNA preparation extracted from the sperm of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. The amplified fragment is the D-loop region which hybridizes with the homologous region extracted from the egg mtDNA. The results demonstrate that mtDNA is present in sperm cell, and, since the replication origin is present it is potentially able to replicate in the zygote. Furthermore, the technique used allowed us to estimate mtDNA copy number in sea urchin sperm, which has never been done before. Our results are that sea urchin sperm cell contains between 4 and 28 mtDNA molecules.

Abstract
This study, which was conducted in central Italy, included (a) 525 office workers employed in an air-conditioned building that had fan coil units in every room (building B) and (b) 281 subjects who worked in three naturally ventilated buildings (building A) that were operated by the same public administration. The prevalence of work-related symptoms was assessed by a questionnaire that was administered by an occupational medicine specialist. The most frequent complaints of employees in building B were dry air, strong lighting, and high temperature. Employees who worked in this building experienced a statistically higher prevalence of symptoms that were characteristic of the sick building syndrome. This is the first time that this syndrome has been reported in Italy. Excessive illumination, a low relative humidity, and fiberglass on floors and furniture might have contributed to the symptoms. Inadequate maintenance of the building's air-conditioning plant and the employees' lack of information regarding self-regulation of the fan coil units may also have contributed to the prevalence of symptoms.
