Abstract
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) database allows for the detailed analysis of risk factors surrounding fatal occupational events. This study used IMIS data to (1) perform a risk factor analysis of fatal construction falls, and (2) assess the impact of the February 1995 29 CFR Part 1926 Subpart M OSHA fall protection regulations for construction by calculating trends in fatal fall rates. In addition, IMIS data on fatal construction falls were compared with data from other occupational fatality surveillance systems. For falls in construction, the study identified several demographic factors that may indicate increased risk. A statistically significant downward trend in fatal falls was evident in all construction and within several construction categories during the decade. Although the study failed to show a statistically significant intervention effect from the new OSHA regulations, it may have lacked the power to do so.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common disorder with a strong genetic component. Our aim was to evaluate the correlation of the HindIII osteocalcin gene polymorphism to bone mineral density (BMD) and their relationship to osteoporosis. We determined the HindIII osteocalcin gene polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction analysis in postmenopausal Chinese women in Taiwan. The osteocalcin gene polymorphism was detected by the restriction enzyme HindIII, where the H allele indicated the absence of the cuttable site and the h allele indicated its presence. We then related the genotypes to BMD and occurrence of osteoporosis in these women. The allelic frequencies for postmenopausal Chinese women in Taiwan were 64% for h and 36% for H in HindIII restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The prevalence of each genotype in the study population was 37.7% hh, 52.6% Hh, and 9.7% HH. The subjects with genotype hh had the greatest BMD at the lumbar spine and the femoral neck, and those with HH had the smallest BMD at the femoral neck, but these differences did not reach statistical significance. The HindIII osteocalcin genotype showed a significant effect on the prevalence of osteoporosis in the subjects at the femoral neck, that is, women with genotype HH had a 6.4 times greater risk for osteoporosis (P < 0.05), and those with genotype Hh had a 1.2 times greater risk than women with genotype hh. In conclusion, the HindIII osteocalcin gene polymorphism is associated with reduced BMD and predisposes women to osteoporosis at the femoral neck.

Abstract
We propose a profile conditional likelihood approach to handle missing covariates in the general semiparametric transformation regression model. The method estimates the marginal survival function by the Kaplan-Meier estimator, and then estimates the parameters of the survival model and the covariate distribution from a conditional likelihood, substituting the Kaplan-Meier estimator for the marginal survival function in the conditional likelihood. This method is simpler than full maximum likelihood approaches, and yields consistent and asymptotically normally distributed estimator of the regression parameter when censoring is independent of the covariates. The estimator demonstrates very high relative efficiency in simulations. When compared with complete-case analysis, the proposed estimator can be more efficient when the missing data are missing completely at random and can correct bias when the missing data are missing at random. The potential application of the proposed method to the generalized probit model with missing continuous covariates is also outlined.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro transdermal permeation of nalbuphine hydrochloride (CAS 23277-43-2) (NA) and nalbuphine pivalate (NAP), a novel prodrug of NA, from different hydrogel formulations under passive diffusion as well as iontophoresis. Various concentrations of polymers, including polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) were used in the hydrogel formulations. The passive permeation rate of NA was affected by the polymer concentrations, which can be attributed to different viscosities of the hydrated formulations; whereas the passive permeation rate of NAP was not influenced by the various polymer concentrations. Iontophoresis significantly increased the permeation rates of NA and NAP from various hydrogel formulations through skin; the enhancement ratios were higher for NA in all the formulations studied. The iontophoretic permeation rates of NA were slightly decreased by the incorporation of polymers; however, the transdermal flux and membrane potential were independent of polymer concentrations for both NA and NAP, demonstrating that the polymer concentrations in the hydrogel formulations did not have significant effects on the iontophoretic permeation of NA and NAP.

Abstract
This in vitro study compared the proximal marginal adaptation of direct composite restorations with composite and ceramic inlays inserted with different resin cements. Standardized MOD Class II inlay cavities with one proximal box extending below and the other above the CEJ were cut in 48 extracted human molars and randomly assigned to six groups (n=8). Incrementally layered direct composite restorations (P60), composite inlays (P60) and ceramic inlays (Empress; Cerec Vitablocs Mark II) were placed in the cavities. Three different resin cements (RelyX ARC; Variolink II high viscosity; Panavia 21) were used for luting the composite inlays. All ceramic inlays were cemented with RelyX ARC. After finishing and polishing, the teeth were stored for 24 hours in Ringer solution at 37 degrees C before they were subjected to thermal and mechanical loading (5/55 degrees C, 2000x; 50 N vertical load, 50000x). Margins were evaluated on epoxy replicas using a scanning electron microscope at X200 magnification. Statistical analysis was performed with non-parametric test methods (alpha=0.05). The adhesive interfaces to enamel exhibited high percentages of perfect margins for all groups (91.8% to 96%) and a maximum of 5.2% marginal gap formation. Dentin-limited cavity segments demonstrated more marginal openings and less perfect margins than enamel-bound areas; however, this was only statistically significant for direct composite restorations and composite inlays inserted with Variolink II and Panavia 21. RelyXARC showed a significantly better adaptation to P60 inlays compared with the leucite-reinforced Empress ceramic but not the Vitablocs Mark II ceramic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the patterns of nm23 expression in stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix, to compare nm23 expression with clinicopathological findings and to assess its prognostic value. METHODS Twenty-seven patients with stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix underwent abdominal radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Expression of nm23 was studied immunohistochemically, followed by amplification and direct sequencing of exons 4 and 5 of the nm23 gene. RESULTS Overexpression of nm23 was detected in 18.5% of the tumors and low expression was seen in 33.3%, while negative expression was found in 48.1% of the tumors. Deep cervical stromal invasion (> or =1/2) was found to be associated with the increased risk of lymph node metastases (odds ratio = 17.5). A significantly lower percentage of patients survived when nm23 overexpression was observed (p = 0.0063). Univariate analysis revealed that tumor size (2-3.9 cm), lymph node metastasis, tumor invasion into parametria, tumor invasion into blood/lymph vessel, squamous cell carcinoma (> or =2 ng/ml) and nm23 overexpression had a significantly lower recurrence-free survival rate of the patients. None of the above factors was significant according to multivariate analysis. There were no mutations in exons 4 and 5 of the nm23 gene in stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that expression of nm23 may be indicative of an unfavorable prognosis in patients with stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

Abstract
This article investigates an augmented inverse selection probability weighted estimator for Cox regression parameter estimation when covariate variables are incomplete. This estimator extends the Horvitz and Thompson (1952, Journal of the American Statistical Association 47, 663-685) weighted estimator. This estimator is doubly robust because it is consistent as long as either the selection probability model or the joint distribution of covariates is correctly specified. The augmentation term of the estimating equation depends on the baseline cumulative hazard and on a conditional distribution that can be implemented by using an EM-type algorithm. This method is compared with some previously proposed estimators via simulation studies. The method is applied to a real example.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The formation of urinary stones is hypothesized to be associated with calcitonin receptors. The most commonly seen polymorphism is C/T at the 1377th nucleotide. Hence, these polymorphisms are being used as a genetic marker in the search for the cause of urolithiasis. METHODS A normal control group of 105 healthy people and 102 patients with recurrent calcium oxalate stones were examined. The polymorphism was detected following a polymerase chain reaction-based and restriction analysis by AluI. An uncuttable length is 228 bp (CC) whereas two fragments of 120 and 108 bp are shown as cuttable lengths (TT). RESULTS The results revealed significant differences between the normal individuals and the stone patients (p<0.01). The distribution of leucine (cuttable) homozygote in the stone group (2.0%) was higher than in the control group (0.0%). The odds ratio for the leucine allele of the calcitonin receptor gene in calcium oxalate stone disease is 5.634 (95% CI: 2.286--13.885). CONCLUSIONS Results show that the polymorphism in the calcitonin receptor gene could be a genetic marker for urinary stone disease and therefore it is worthwhile pursuing further studies of the leucine allele of calcitonin receptor gene due to it is strongly correlated with stone disease.

Abstract
A mathematical model concerning the separation selectivity of basic analytes in chiral capillary electrophoresis (CE) modified with negatively charged cyclodextrins (CDs) has been presented to describe the dependence of chiral selectivity on the buffer pH and the chiral selector concentration. The electrophoretic method to determine the parameters of the model has also been developed. The model has been tested with racemic epinephrine and isoproterenol as target analytes and sulfonated beta-CD as chiral selector. The agreements have been found between the calculated and the measured values. Some significant conclusions to optimize chiral CE separation have been derived from the model and proven by the experiments. Electrochemical detection was used to meet the requirement of the low introduced concentration of analytes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determination of the polymerization contraction stress of packable composites (ALERT, Surefil, Solitaire, Solitaire 2) and a packable ORMOCER material (Definite) in comparison with a conventional hybrid composite (Tetric Ceram). METHODS Contraction force generated by the test materials (10 replications each) was measured by polymerizing the composites filled in a plastic tray between two aluminum attachments mounted in a Stress-Strain-Analyzer testing machine (specimen size: 4x4x2 mm, C-factor=0.33). Contraction force was recorded for 300s under a standard exposure condition (40s, 800mW/cm(2)). Maximum contraction stress (MPa), force rate (N/s), relative force rate (%/s) of each material were statistically analyzed by ANOVA (alpha=0.05) and post-hoc Tukey's test. RESULTS Maximum contraction stresses of the packable materials were 4.60 +/- 0.32MPa (ALERT), 4.16 +/- 0.18MPa (Definite), 3.36 +/- 0.08MPa (Solitaire 2), 3.33 +/- 0.23MPa (Solitaire) and 3.13 +/- 0.18MPa (Surefil), which were significantly higher than that of Tetric Ceram (2.51 +/- 0.14MPa). Tetric Ceram exhibited the significantly lowest force rate. Force/time curves were S-shaped. Solitaire especially showed a longer pre-gelation phase before contraction force was recorded. SIGNIFICANCE High contraction stress and rapid contraction force development can lead to failure of bond to tooth structure. This study suggested that, packable composite resins are less capable of reducing the contraction stress during the early setting stage, thus not superior in maintaining the bond with cavity walls to conventional hybrid composite Tetric Ceram.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Packable composites, promoted for the restoration of stress-bearing posterior teeth, have captured clinicians' interest. METHODS The authors tested three packable composites (Alert, Jeneric/Pentron; Solitaire, Heraeus Kulzer, Wehrheim, Germany; SureFil, Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany); a new packable organically modified ceramic, or ormocer (Definite, Degussa AG, Hanau, Germany); a hybrid composite (Tetric Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and an ion-releasing composite (Ariston pHc, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). They determined modulus of elasticity according to EN 24049:1993 of the European Committee for Standardization. They measured Vickers hardness using a 200-gram load for 40 seconds. To determine the materials' depth of cure, they used both a scraping method (International Standards Organization standard CD 4049:1997) and a hardness profiling method. RESULTS The authors calculated means and standard deviations from 10 replications of each test and used one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests (alpha = .05). The materials had significant differences (P < .001) in all characteristics. Solitaire had the significantly lowest elastic modulus and microhardness; Alert had the highest values for these characteristics. Ariston pHc exhibited the significantly lowest depth of cure. There was a significant correlation between the two methods of measuring depth of cure (r2 = 0.9945; P = .021). CONCLUSIONS The material group of packable composites is rather inhomogeneous in terms of mechanical and physical data. Our data suggest that bulk curing of packable composites in deep cavities still is not recommendable. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS The clinician needs to select packable composites carefully, as it seems that not all of these materials quality for stress-loaded posterior restorations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the 3-yr clinical performance of composite and ceramic inlays in posterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS 47 composite inlays (Tetric, Blend-a-Lux, Pertac) and 24 ceramic inlays (Empress) were placed by seven student operators under supervision of an experienced dentist. Clinical assessment of 58 inlays (81.7%) was performed after 3 yrs using amodified USPHS criteria and statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS A total of 100% of the ceramic inlays and 89% of the composite inlays were assessed to be clinically excellent or acceptable. Three composite inlays failed during the first yr and one had to be replaced during the second evaluation period. All composite inlay failures were recorded on molars, revealing a significantly higher failure rate compared with premolars (Fisher's test, P = 0.041). Ceramic inlays revealed a significantly better "anatomic form of the surface" (P = 0.027) and "integrity of the restoration" (P = 0.035). Inlays in small cavities performed better for "marginal integrity" (P = 0.033) and "discoloration at the margin" (P = 0.038).

Abstract
The formation of urinary stones is associated with cell death in response to various injuries. P21 (WAF1/CIP1) is a downstream protein of P53 and can arrest the cell cycle at G1/S with resulting cell death. We aimed to investigate the polymorphism of p2 gene codon 31 as the genetic marker in searching for the association of urolithiasis. One hundred and nineteen healthy controls and 95 patients with calcium oxalate stone were examined in this study. The polymorphism was seen from the result of polymerase chain reaction-based restriction analysis. The result revealed significant differences between normal individuals and stone patients (P < 0.05) and the distribution of arginine homozygote in the control group (31.9%) was higher than in the patient group (16.8%). It is concluded that polymorphisms of p21 codon 31 can be a genetic marker for urinary stone disease. Individuals possessing arginine form of p21 codon 31 have less risk of developing calcium stone disease.

Abstract
The formation of urinary stones is presumed to be associated with polymorphism of the osteocalcin gene. The most frequently seen polymorphism is the Hind III type located at the promoter region. This polymorphism has been used as a genetic marker in the search for a correlation between urolithiasis and normal subjects. In our study, a normal control group of 105 healthy people and 102 patients with calcium oxalate stones were examined. The polymorphism was seen following polymerase chain reaction-based restriction analysis. The results revealed no significant differences between normal individuals and stone patients (P = 0.978), and distribution of the TT homozygote in the control group (42.9%) was similar to that in the patient group (42.2%). Further categorization of the stone patients into normocalciuric and hypercalciuric groups also revealed no statistical differences from controls. We conclude that Hind III polymorphism of the osteocalcin gene is not a suitable genetic marker of urinary stone disease. Further searches for other polymorphisms on this gene correlated with stone disease are suggested.

Abstract
The use of a novel cationic calixarene, p-(quaternary ammonium) calix[4]arene, as selectivity modifier in capillary electrophoresis coupled with electrochemical detection was reported. The calixarene displayed good selectivity for the positional isomers of benzenediol and aminophenol and their successful separation was obtained under optimum conditions. The interaction mechanism between p-(quaternary ammonium) calix[4]arene and the solutes is discussed using the molecular modeling method. The detection limits by electrochemical detection for the most solutes studied here were below picogram level, which was approximately 2 orders of magnitude lower than those reported in the literature using UV detection. The results showed that electrochemical detection is especially suitable for an electrophoresis system where calixarenes are used as modifier.

Abstract
An amperometric glucose biosensor was successfully developed by electrochemical polymerization of p-chlorophenol (4-CP) at a Pt electrode in the presence of glucose oxidase. The amperometric response of this biosensor to hydrogen peroxide, formed as the product of enzymatic reaction, was measured at a potential of 0.6 V (vs. SCE) in phosphate buffer solution. The performances of sensors, prepared at different monomer concentrations and polymerization potentials, were investigated in detail. The biosensor prepared under optimal conditions had a linear response to glucose ranging from 2.5 x 10(-4) to 1.5 x 10(-2) mol L(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.997 and a response time of less than 2 s. Substrate selectivity of the polymer-based enzyme electrode was tested for coexisting interferents such as uric acid and ascorbic acid, and no discernible response was observed. After 90 days, the response of the biosensor remained almost unchanged, indicating very good stability.

Abstract
In this paper we address the problem of reliably fitting parametric and semi-parametric models to spots in high density spot array images obtained in gene expression experiments. The goal is to measure the amount of label bound to an array element. A lot of spots can be modelled accurately by a Gaussian shape. In order to deal with highly overlapping spots we use robust M-estimators. When the parametric method fails (which can be detected automatically) we use a novel, robust semi-parametric method which can handle spots of different shapes accurately. The introduced techniques are evaluated experimentally.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Dengue fever has been one of the most important health problems in Taiwan since a large outbreak during 1987 and 1988. It is critically necessary to have a diagnostic approach that can detect early infections in an outbreak or even find infections existing in silent transmission of the disease. METHODS To develop an efficient diagnostic protocol, 105 plasma/serum and 35 peripheral blood leukocyte (PBL) specimens from the 1994 outbreak in southern Taiwan were collected for assessment by various diagnostic techniques in this study. RESULTS In acute blood samples, dengue viruses were isolated from 19.4% (14/72) and 33.3% (14/42) of reported and confirmed cases, respectively. Viral RNA in serum/plasma was detected from 20.0% (12/60) of acute samples, which was significantly higher than that from convalescent samples (3/44; 6.8%). However, viral RNA in PBLs, detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PBL-RT-PCR), could be observed in 73.2% (19/26) and 66.7% (6/9) of acute and convalescent samples, respectively. The persistence of dengue viruses in PBLs was also evidenced by the presence of viral antigens in 42.9% (4/7) of confirmed convalescent samples by the immunofluorescence antibody test. In addition, IgM antibodies were detected in 43.8% (46/105) of reported cases and 85.2% (46/54) of confirmed cases by the IgM antibody capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MAC-ELISA). CONCLUSIONS Although IgM antibody detection achieved the highest detection rate among techniques assessed in this study, no individual test can actually reach full efficiency for early diagnosis of dengue infections. Here, we propose a protocol which applies MAC-ELISA and PBL-RT-PCR in sequence, by which 22 confirmed cases were definitely proved as dengue positive. High levels of both sensitivity and specificity were shown in this protocol.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the marginal quality and microleakage of composite resin class V restorations. METHODS Standardized mixed class V cavities (diameter: 4mm, depth: 2mm) with half of the finish lines limited within dentin were cut in 90 freshly extracted human molars and randomly assigned to nine groups (n=10). After etching enamel and dentin, the cavities were restored with nine different restorative systems (Syntac Sprint/Tetric Ceram=SS, Syntac Single-Component/Tetric Ceram=SC, Onestep/Aeliteflo=OS, Aquaprep+Onestep/Aeliteflo=OA, Prime & Bond 2.1/TPH=PB, Optibond Solo/Prodigy=OP, Singlebond/Z100=SB, Tenure Quik/Marathon=TQ, Solobond M/Arabesk=SM) using a wet-bonding procedure. After finishing and polishing, the teeth were stored for 24h in distilled water at 37 degrees C before they were subjected to thermocycling (5/55 degrees C, 1000x). Epoxy replicas were made for margin analysis in the SEM. Specimens were stained in methylene blue, sectioned, and evaluated for microleakage. Dye penetration was scored on a 0-3 ordinal scale. RESULTS Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis H-test, Mann-Whitney U-test) revealed significant differences (P<0.05) among the groups at dentin and enamel margins for the microleakage scores as well as for the results of the quantitative SEM margin analysis. SC revealed a significantly higher percentage of perfect margins in the SEM than OS and SM in enamel and dentin, respectively. OA exhibited significantly more leakage in enamel than all other groups. CONCLUSIONS None of the tested restorative systems achieved a perfect seal in dentin and enamel of mixed class V cavities. Marginal quality and sealing ability of adhesive systems to dentin, using a wet-bonding procedure, is still inferior compared with enamel margins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There are important questions about epidemiologic transmission patterns as well as the possibility that genetic and phenotypic differences in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) affect transmissibility, infectivity, pathogenicity, and response to therapy and vaccines. To delinate the genetic heterogeneity of HIV-1 and the association of subtypes with risk factors and location of residence in Taiwan, subtypes of HIV-1 in Taiwanese patients were identified and a phylogenetic study was performed. In addition, the accuracy of peptide-enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using serum samples from Taiwanese patients infected with HIV-1 was investigated. METHODS Peptide-EIA was used to give a preliminary subtype of HIV-1-positive serum samples collected from different areas of Taiwan. Reverse transcription (RT)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genetic sequencing were used to confirm the peptide-EIA results and to construct a phylogenetic tree. RESULTS Among the 149 serum samples, 98 were subtype B (66%), 38 subtype E (25%), two subtype Thai-B (1.3%), one subtype G (0.7%), and one subtype C (0.7%). Comparison of risk factors for HIV-1 infection and subtype revealed that most B subtype infections (59/98) occurred in homosexual or heterosexual patients, whereas 28 of 38 E subtype infections occurred in heterosexual patients. The B/E ratio was significantly different (p < 0.05) in Taipei than in other areas of Taiwan. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the predominant subtype of HIV-1 infection in Taiwan is B, followed by E, and that the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes in Taiwan is similar to that of Thailand, although the genetic sequences are distinct. Homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, and intravenous drug use behaviors affect the distribution of different subtypes of HIV-1 infection. Peptide-EIA in conjunction with RT-PCR and sequencing can provide accurate subtyping of HIV-1 infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the use of Fok I polymorphism (the most frequent polymorphism, at the start codon of the vitamin D receptor gene, VDR) as a convenient genetic marker in identifying the cause of urolithiasis. PATIENTS, SUBJECTS AND METHODS A normal control group of 90 healthy subjects and 146 patients with calcium oxalate stones were examined. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction analysis, the relationship between Fok I polymorphism and urolithiasis was evaluated. An unexcisable length of 265 bp was identified (allele CC) and two fragments (169 bp and 96 bp) identified as excisable lengths (allele TT). RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between the groups (chi-square test, P < 0.05) for the genotype of the VDR Fok I start codon polymorphism. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the C allele in those at risk of stone disease was 1.672 (1.149-2.432). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the VDR Fok I start codon polymorphism may be a good candidate for a genetic marker in calcium oxalate stone disease.

Abstract
A copper microparticle-modified carbon fiber microdisk array electrode was fabricated and employed in capillary electrophoresis for the simultaneous determination of the five aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs) including netilmicin, tobramycin, lincomycin, kanamycin and amikacin. The array electrode exhibited high catalytic activity for AGs, good reproducibility and stability. Under the optimum separation conditions (separation voltage of 6.2 kV, electrophoretic medium of 125 mM NaOH), the five AGs above were baseline separated within 20 min. At a working electrode potential of 0.7 V (versus saturated calomel electrode), the calibration curves were linear over two orders of magnitude of concentration, and the detection limits (SIN=3) were below 2 microM except for lincomycin (6.7 microM). The developed method was successfully employed for the simultaneous determination of the five AGs studied in pharmaceutical injections. The feasibility of this method for the simultaneous determination of lincomycin, kanamycin and amikacin in urine sample was also demonstrated.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the usefulness of electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) in the preoperative detection and perioperative management of insidious concomitant primary tracheobronchial anomalies in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TF). METHODS From July 1995 to October 1999, 88 children (38 girls, 50 boys) with TF were enrolled in this study. EBCT examinations provided information needed to plan management. The final diagnoses of airway abnormalities were correlated with the findings of bronchoscopy in five patients and confirmed during surgery. RESULTS Fourteen (16%) of the 88 patients had associated primary tracheobronchial anomalies. Nine patients had tracheal bronchi, which were combined with tracheobronchial stenosis in two patients and with tracheal stenosis in one patient. Two patients had tracheal diverticulum, which was combined with lower tracheal stenosis in one patient. Two patients had congenital tracheal stenosis. Tracheomalasia was found in one patient. Three patients with ventilation difficulties died postoperatively. Special attention was given to the care of the diseased airways perioperatively, and the remaining 11 patients had a smooth course of hospitalization and discharge. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that EBCT provides good delineation of both cardiac and tracheobronchial anomalies and suggest that it should be used perioperatively to detect associated airway anomalies in TF, to facilitate the design of an appropriate ventilation care strategy.

Abstract
The study was conducted in vitro to investigate the changes of indomethacin transdermal permeation pretreated by capsaicin and nonivamide, two compounds chemically similar to Azone. The combined effect of low frequency ultrasound (20 kHz) and enhancers on the indomethacin permeation was also evaluated. The experimental data demonstrated that capsaicin and nonivamide significantly enhanced the flux of indomethacin across nude mouse skin. Enhancement effects of both analogues were very similar and depended predominantly on the concentration tested. Histological examination coupled with visual scores indicated the safety of capsaicin and nonivamide on skin structure. Simultaneous application of ultrasound and enhancers significantly increased skin permeation of indomethacin compared with either ultrasound or enhancers alone. Better effect was obtained by the combination with capsaicin than nonivamide.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study of 68 petrochemical workers (23 had never smoked [E/NS], 45 were current smokers [E/S]) and 130 subjects with no known history of exposure to petrochemicals (49 had never smoked [NE/NS], 81 were current smokers [NE/S]) was conducted to assess the effect of occupational exposure to petrochemicals and smoking on semen quality. In-person interviews revealed occupational history, smoking habit, and lifestyle. Semen parameters such as volume, viability, sperm forward progression rate, sperm density, and total sperm count were determined for all subjects. The results show that the E/NS workers had a lower sperm forward progression rate (P < .05) compared with controls (NE/NS). Individuals in the NE/S group showed a significant inverse relationship between years smoked and sperm density (r = -.24, P < .05). The data also revealed that cigarette smokers who had worked in a petrochemical plant had significantly poorer quality semen, including sperm density, total sperm count, and forward progression rate, compared with the control (NE/NS) group (P < .01). Furthermore, there was a significant inverse correlation between combined exposure and smoking years, and sperm density (r = -.28, P < .05). These findings suggest that occupational exposure to petrochemical compounds may aggravate the adverse effect that smoking has on semen quality.

Abstract
Objective long-term clinical data are necessary to evaluate the performance of dental restorations. This prospective clinical trial evaluated composite and ceramic inlays for clinical acceptability as restorative materials in posterior teeth and provided 2-year results. The study involved 7 student operators placing 47 composite inlays (Tetric, blend-a-lux, Pertac) and 24 ceramic inlays (Empress) under the supervision of an experienced dentist. Clinical assessment of 56 inlays (78.9%) was performed after 2 years with modified USPHS criteria and statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test. All the ceramic inlays and 90% of the composite inlays were considered clinically excellent or acceptable. During the first year 3 composite inlays failed and during the second evaluation period 1 had to be replaced. Ceramic inlays produced significantly better "anatomic form of the surface" (P = 0.038) and "integrity of the restoration" values (P = 0.043). Inlays in small cavities exhibited superior "marginal integrity" (P = 0.026) and "marginal discoloration" values (P = 0.034). Fisher's test revealed a significantly higher failure rate in molars than in bicuspids (P = 0.034). Posterior tooth-colored inlays exhibited a success rate of 100% for ceramic inlays and 90% for composite inlays even if placed by relatively inexperienced but supervised student operators.

Abstract
A new strategy for the preparation of a DNA-modified carbon paste electrode is developed. It is found that the anodic response of mifepristone is greatly enhanced at the dsDNA-modified carbon paste electrode comparing with that obtained at the bare electrode, while the response at a ssDNA-modified electrode is similar to bare electrode. So the dsDNA-modified electrode is employed as a sensitive biosensor for the detection of mifepristone. A linear dependence of the peak currents on the concentration is observed in the range 2.0 x 10(-7) approximately 2.0 x 10(6) mol/L, with a detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-7) mol/L. The relative standard deviation is 4.3% for six successive determinations of 1.0 x 10(6) mol/L mifepristone. The determination of mifepristone tablets is carried out and satisfactory results are obtained.

Abstract
Laparoscopic liver resection is feasible for both benign and malignant disease with present laparoscopic techniques and technology. Laparoscopic liver tumor resection is indicated instead of the conventional hepatectomy if the tumor is located in the peripheral part of the liver. Here, we reported a case of a 73-year-old woman who accepted laparoscopic subsegmentectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma of segment 6. After traditional laparoscopic trocar was settled down under the low pneumoperitoneal pressure of 8 mm Hg, laparoscopic ultrasound allowed exact localization of lesions first and then transection line was marked. Then, dissection the liver parenchyma was carried out with laparoscopic microwave coagulator and ultrasonic aspirator gradually. After operation, she resumed full diet on the second day and was discharged on the 5th post-operative day with no complications and high patient satisfaction. She had follow-up study regularly in our clinic and was disease free at nine months. With the improvement of laparoscopic techniques and the development of new and dedicated technologies, laparoscopic hepatectomy has become feasible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determination of flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, and wear resistance of condensable composites (Solitaire, Surefil, Alert) and an ormocer (Definite) in comparison with a hybrid composite (Tetric Ceram) and an ion-releasing composite (Ariston pHc). METHODS Flexural strength, flexural modulus, and fracture toughness were determined in 3-point bending. Single-edge notched-bend specimens were used to evaluate fracture toughness. Microhardness was measured with a Vickers indenter. Wear was determined in a pin-on-block-design with a Degusit antagonist at 50 N load and quantified by a replica technique after 6000, 10000, 30000, and 50000 load cycles using a 3D-laser scanner. All results were statistically analyzed with ANOVA and post hoc Tukey HSD tests. RESULTS Alert exhibited the highest flexural modulus, K(IC), and hardness, but lowest wear resistance. Solitaire presented the highest wear resistance, but significantly lower flexural strength, flexural modulus, K(IC), and hardness than all other materials. No significant correlation could be detected between hardness and wear of the tested composites with Pearson's correlation coefficient. SIGNIFICANCE The condensable composites differed significantly in their mechanical properties. This study suggested that, besides the filler content level and filler size, other factors like matrix-filler interactions highly influence the fracture and wear behavior of the materials.

Abstract
In this Letter we discuss theoretically the instabilities of thermotropic freely standing smectic- A films under shear flow [3]. We show that, in Couette geometry, the centrifugal force pushes the liquid crystal toward the outer boundary and induces smectic layer dilation close to the outer boundary. Under strong shear, this effect induces a layer buckling instability. The critical shear rate is proportional to 1/sqrt[d], where d is the thickness of the film.

Abstract
Although the clinical correlates of the reference antifungal susceptibility test results in hematogenous and deep-seated Candida infection are still controversial, we evaluated the clinical correlates of this test in deep-seated Candida infections in non-AIDS patients. Thirty-two non-AIDS patients with hematogenous or deep-seated Candida infections were treated with intravenous fluconazole (400 mg a day), and the clinical outcomes were evaluated. Coexisting bacterial infections were treated with appropriate antibiotics, superinfection or reinfection was excluded, inadequate fluconazole therapy was avoided, and essential surgical intervention was performed. The MICs of fluconazole for these 32 Candida isolates were determined according to the M27-A procedure approved by the National Committee on Clinical Laboratory Standards. MICs were interpreted as susceptible (< or =8 microg/ml), dose-dependent susceptible (16 to 32 microg/ml), and resistant (> or =64 microg/ml) according to the criteria of the M27-A standard. The success rates were 79% (19 of 24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 59 to 93%) in the susceptible category, 66% (4 of 6; 95% CI, 19 to 95%) in the dose-dependent susceptible category, and 0% (0 of 2; 95% CI, 0 to 84%) in the resistant category. We conclude that the clinical correlation of the reference antifungal susceptibility test results is high in hematogenous and deep-seated Candida infections.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) antibodies on the TNFalpha gene expression in a neonatal septic shock model. Ten-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups and given intraperitoneal (ip) injection as follows: group 1: 0.1 ml saline; group 2: 0.1 mg/kg Salmonella enteritidis lipopolysaccharide (LPS); group 3: 1 mg/kg of anti-TNFalpha antibodies (Ab); group 4: 0.1 mg/kg of LPS and 1 mg/kg of Ab. We found that in group 2, LPS induced shock, demonstrating hypoglycemia and lactacidemia (p < 0. 05) and death (81.8%). Ab decreased the mortality significantly (35%) and attenuated the hypoglycemia (35 +/- 8 mg/dl in group 2 vs. 53 +/- 3 mg/dl in group 4) and lactacidemia (5.40 +/- 0.63 vs. 2.35 +/- 0.45 mmol) at 8 h in group 4 when compared to group 2. Northern blot demonstrated a significant decrease in TNFalpha mRNA expression in group 4 as compared to group 2, at 2 h after LPS injection. We conclude that the beneficial effects of anti-TNFalpha antibodies on LPS-induced shock may be due to decreased TNFalpha gene expression.

Abstract
Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is an uncommon congenital anomaly in which the anatomical presentations vary widely among patients. We hereby present two newborns with TAPVC associated with asplenia syndrome; both had severe esophageal varices due to infradiaphragmatic pulmonary venous drainage. Ultrafast computed tomography (CT) scanning was superior to color Doppler echocardiography and cardiac catheterization as it provided a detailed portrait of the pulmonary drainage. The remarkable radiographic manifestations are presented.

Abstract
Genetic and pharmacological studies have defined a role for the melanocortin-4 receptor (Mc4r) in the regulation of energy homeostasis. The physiological function of Mc3r, a melanocortin receptor expressed at high levels in the hypothalamus, has remained unknown. We evaluated the potential role of Mc3r in energy homeostasis by studying Mc3r-deficient (Mc3r(-/-)) mice and compared the functions of Mc3r and Mc4r in mice deficient for both genes. The 4-6-month Mc3r-/- mice have increased fat mass, reduced lean mass and higher feed efficiency than wild-type littermates, despite being hypophagic and maintaining normal metabolic rates. (Feed efficiency is the ratio of weight gain to food intake.) Consistent with increased fat mass, Mc3r(-/-) mice are hyperleptinaemic and male Mc3r(-/-) mice develop mild hyperinsulinaemia. Mc3r(-/-) mice did not have significantly altered corticosterone or total thyroxine (T4) levels. Mice lacking both Mc3r and Mc4r become significantly heavier than Mc4r(-/-) mice. We conclude that Mc3r and Mc4r serve non-redundant roles in the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Abstract
A 65-year-old man with a dural carotid-cavernous fistula (DCCF) presented with sudden onset of painful trochlear nerve paresis. Typical signs of DCCF including conjunctival arterialization, chemosis, and proptosis did not become manifest until 4 months later. This unusual presentation of DCCF was caused by drainage of the fistula posteriorly into the inferior petrosal sinus with low flow. With this condition, patients may present with trochlear nerve palsy without a red eye. Although rare, DCCF must be considered in patients presenting with isolated painful trochlear palsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Laparoscopic liver resection is feasible for both benign and malignant disease with today's laparoscopic techniques and technology. Location of the tumor at the edge of segment 3, 4, 5, or 6 of our patients makes them an ideal candidate for laparoscopic resection. METHODOLOGY There were 9 patients who underwent laparoscopic subsegmentectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis. They were classified as Child A in 6 and B in 3 patients. Hepatitis B was found in 5 and Hepatitis C in 4 cases. Preoperative diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma was completed in 7 and definitive histologic diagnosis from frozen section in 2 cases. All 9 patients underwent subsegmentectomy and removal of the tumor with non-tumor cirrhotic liver with a distance of 10 mm at the least margin. Laparoscopic ultrasound allows exact localization of lesions and achievement of adequate resection margin. RESULTS Those patients resumed a full diet on the 2nd-3rd day after the operation and were discharged home on day 4-7 with no complications but one had prolonging discharge due to ascitis from a drainage tube. Finally, the ascitis was controlled by medications for 1 week. All patients had high postoperative satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic liver resection is a procedure of significant risk and technically demanding. Therefore, it should be performed only by experienced liver surgeons with a high level of laparoscopic skill and in the carefully selected patient.

Abstract
We use a coarse grained description to study the steady state interfacial configuration of a two phase fluid under steady shear. Dissipative relaxation of the order parameter leads to interfacial slip at the contact line, even with no-slip boundary conditions on the fluid velocity. This relaxation occurs within a characteristic length scale l(0) = sqrt[xiD/V0], with xi the (microscopic) interfacial thickness, D an order parameter diffusivity, and V0 the boundary velocity. The steady state interfacial configuration is shown to satisfy a scaling form involving the ratio l(0)/L, where L is the width of the fluid layer, for a passive interface, and the capillary number as well for an active interface.

Abstract
The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the patterns of p53 expression in stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix, to compare p53 expression with clinicopathological findings, and to assess its prognostic value. 27 patients with stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix underwent abdominal radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Expression of p53 was studied immunohistochemically. Overexpression of p53 was detected in 33.3% of the tumors, low expression was seen in 11.1%, and negative expression was found in 55.6%. Deep cervical stromal invasion (> or = 1/2) was found to be associated with the increased risk of lymph node metastases (odds ratio = 17.5). A significantly lower percentage of patients survived when p53 overexpression was observed (p = 0.0315). Univariate analysis revealed that tumor size (2-3.9 cm), lymph node metastasis, tumor invasion into parametria, tumor invasion into blood/lymph vessels, squamous cell carcinoma antigen (> or = 2 ng/ml), and p53 overexpression had a significantly lower recurrence-free survival rate. None of these above factors obtained significance in the multivariate analysis. This study suggests that expression of p53 may be indicative of an unfavorable prognosis in patients with stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of beta-1,3-glucan derived from Schizophyllum commune in enhancing shrimp survival as well as haemocyte phagocytosis and superoxide anion production in brooder Penaeus monodon. Pond-reared P. monodon adults (135 +/- 25 g) stocked in outdoor or indoor tanks were fed either a test diet containing beta-1,3-glucan (2.0 g kg(-1) or a glucan-free control diet for 40 days. Their survival was compared. The brooders reared in indoor tanks were analysed at days 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 30 and 40 for their haemocyte phagocytic activity and superoxide anion production. The results showed that regardless of indoor or outdoor rearing the survival rate of shrimp fed the glucan diet was significantly higher (P<0.001) than that of the control group. The brooders showed enhanced haemocyte phagocytic activity, cell adhesion and superoxide anion production when glucan was administered in their diets. The immunostimulatory enhancement peaked at day 24 after starting the dietary exposure and subsequently decreased to the pre-feeding level at the end of the 40 days feeding trial.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to assess the fetal cerebellar volume during normal gestation using three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound (US) and to establish a normal chart of fetal cerebellar volume using Altman's model of statistics. In total, 231 healthy fetuses were studied for assessment of cerebellar volume using a 3-D US volume scanner. The fetuses to be studied were selected to give a cross-sectional series (i.e., each fetus was examined only once). Polynomial regression analysis was calculated to find the best-fit model using gestational age as the independent variable and cerebellar volume as the dependent variable. Altman's model was used to calculate the age-related reference centiles for the variance of cerebellar volume. In addition, common fetal growth indices, such as biparietal diameter, occipitofrontal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and estimated fetal weight, were also measured for the correlation between cerebellar volume and these indices. Our results indicated that the fetal cerebellar volume was highly correlated with gestational age in normal pregnancies with the best-fit polynomial regression equation of a second-order (r = 0.91, p < 0.0001). In addition, fetal cerebellar volume in normal gestation is also highly correlated with common fetal growth indices, such as biparietal diameter, occipitofrontal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and estimated fetal weight (all p < 0.0001). Following the Altman's model, a normal growth chart of fetal cerebellar volume was established for clinical reference. In conclusion, with 3-D US, the assessment of fetal cerebellar volume becomes feasible. We believe that fetal cerebellar volume assessed by 3-D US may be useful in detecting cerebellar hypoplasia and relevant syndromes prenatally.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate the parameters of fetal circulation of normal pregnancies and their relationship to fetal cardiac output. We performed a cross-sectional study of 315 normal singleton pregnancies between 20 and 40 weeks' gestation without fetal chromosomal or structural malformations. After follow-up to delivery, 212 patients who fit all the criteria were enrolled for final analysis. Blood flow velocity waveforms were obtained from the tricuspid and mitral ventricular inflow, ascending aorta (AAO), pulmonary artery (PA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), renal artery (RA), umbilical artery (UA), descending aorta (DAO), inferior vena cava (IVC) and ductus venosus (DV) using duplex (real-time Doppler) ultrasound (US) scanner. The peak velocity of DV, AAO, PA and MCA were also obtained. At the intracardiac level, the ratio of peak flow velocity of E wave to peak flow velocity of A wave (E:A ratio) of mitral valve (MV) increased more rapidly than tricuspid valve (TV) E:A ratio. For the great vessels, aortic peak velocity remained higher than the pulmonary peak velocity with advancing gestation. The cardiac output closely correlated to the cardiac compliance and flow resistance indices at arterial and venous level. The acceleration time in the fetal arteries increased with advancing gestation in AAO, PA, MCA and DAO, but it decreased in RA and kept constant in UA. In addition, the acceleration time of UA was unrelated to cardiac output. The changes of the fetal intracardiac, arterial and venous impedances were remarkable through the gestation and related to cardiac output. Fetal cardiac output correlated well with the changes of arterial resistance, except with the DAO. The ventricular compliance increased with advancing gestation, especially in the left side, and was highly related to the change of cardiac output. The acceleration time in major arteries positively correlated with the gestational age and cardiac output, except in UA and RA; this indicates the difference of the changes of mean arterial pressure in uteroplacental circulation, fetal organs and great vessels. In conclusion, the fetal cardiac output correlated well with the ventricular compliance and was influenced by both hemodynamic changes in peripheral resistance and mean arterial pressure.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to use quantitative three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasonography to establish the normal charts of three fetal ear-growth indexes, (ear length, ear width and ear area), and to validate their efficacy in the prenatal diagnosis of fetal trisomies, either separately or as a combination. Using quantitative 3-D ultrasonography, we performed a prospective study to measure the three fetal ear growth indexes (i.e., ear length, ear width and ear area) in 129 singleton pregnancies, including 122 normal fetuses and 7 trisomies. The ear shape was also evaluated in these fetuses using both 2-D and 3-D ultrasonography. Our results showed that: First, 3-D ultrasonography offers better visualization and easier evaluation of fetal ears than 2-D ultrasonography. Second, when using the quantitative assessment of 3-D ultrasonography, the measurements of ear length, ear width and ear area were all correlated significantly with gestational age in normal pregnancies (r = 0.881, 0.848, and 0.890, respectively). In addition, 3 of 7 fetal trisomies had ear length below the tenth percentile, 1 had ear width below the tenth percentile, and 2 had ear area below the tenth percentile. Furthermore, with the combination of these three measurements, (including ear length, ear width and ear area), the sensitivity in detecting fetal trisomies was elevated to 57.1% and the specificity was 83.2%. In conclusion, 3-D ultrasonography reduces the limitations of 2-D ultrasonography in the evaluation of fetal ears. However, fetal ear measurement may not be used as a single ultrasonographic parameter in identifying aneuploid fetuses. We recommend using the combination of these three ear growth indexes to enhance the detection rate of aneuploidy.

Abstract
For Ras oncoproteins to transform mammalian cells, they must be posttranslationally modified with a farnesyl group in a reaction catalyzed by the enzyme farnesyl:protein transferase (FPTase). Inhibitors of FPTase have therefore been developed as potential anticancer agents. These compounds reverse many of the malignant phenotypes of Ras-transformed cells in culture and inhibit the growth of tumor xenografts in nude mice. Furthermore, the FPTase inhibitor (FTI) L-744,832 causes tumor regression in mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-v-Ha-ras transgenic mice and tumor stasis in MMTV-N-ras mice. Although these data support the further development of FTIs, it should be noted that Ki-ras is the ras gene most frequently mutated in human cancers. Moreover, Ki-RasB binds more tightly to FPTase than either Ha- or N-Ras, and thus higher concentrations of FTIs that are competitive with the protein substrate may be required to inhibit Ki-Ras processing. Given the unique biochemical and biological features of Ki-RasB, it is important to evaluate the efficacy of FTIs or any other modulator of oncogenic Ras function in model systems expressing this Ras oncoprotein. We have developed strains of transgenic mice carrying the human Ki-rasB cDNA with an activating mutation (G12V) under the control of the MMTV enhancer/promoter. The predominant pathological feature that develops in these mice is the stochastic appearance of mammary adenocarcinomas. High levels of the Ki-rasB transgene RNA are detected in these tumors. Treatment of MMTV-Ki-rasB mice with L-744,832 caused inhibition of tumor growth in the absence of systemic toxicity. Although FPTase activity was inhibited in tumors from the treated mice, unprocessed Ki-RasB was not detected. These results demonstrate the utility of the MMTV-Ki-rasB transgenic mice for testing potential anticancer agents. Additionally, the data suggest that although the FTI L-744,832 can inhibit tumor growth in this model, Ki-Ras may not be the sole mediator of the biological effects of the FTI.

Abstract
AIM To make an initial assessment of the periodontal diagnostic potential of immunoreactive matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) by comparison with elastase activity which has previously been associated with disease severity and progression. METHODS GCF was collected from molar and premolar sites of 16 chronic adult periodontitis patients before treatment and 13 of this group 2 weeks after scaling and root planing. Samples were analysed for MMP-8 by immunofluorometric assay and for elastase activity with a fluorogenic substrate. RESULTS Mean patient clinical parameters and GCF enzyme totals both decreased significantly after treatment. Total MMP-8 levels and elastase activities generally correlated significantly with gingival and bleeding indices. For GCF concentrations, only MMP-8 showed a significant fall after treatment, and some significant correlations with clinical parameters. Amounts of the 2 enzymes correlated significantly with each other. CONCLUSIONS Similarities between MMP-8 and elastase probably reflect the fact that both enzymes are associated mainly with neutrophils: MMP-8 levels may have fallen more after treatment because the assay, unlike that for elastase, would most likely not have detected much enzyme bound to alpha-macroglobulin. The immunoassay for MMP-8 is more specific and convenient than functional collagenase assays, and might be suitable for monitoring the periodontal condition.

Abstract
We evaluated the role of the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC-4R) in the control of metabolic rate and food intake in mice. Intraperitoneal administration of the non-selective MC-R agonist melanotan II (MT-II; a cyclic heptapeptide) increases metabolic rate in wildtype mice, while MC-4R knockout mice are insensitive to the effects of MT-II on metabolic rate. MC-4R knockout mice are also insensitive to the effects of MT-II on reducing food intake. We conclude that MC-4R can mediate control of both metabolic rate and food intake in mice. We infer that a role for MC-3R in mediating the acute effects of MT-II on basal metabolic rate and food intake in wildtype mice seems limited.

Abstract
Partial nucleotide sequences of the sapD and sapF genes of the sap operon (GenBank Accession No. AF178651) from Vibrio fischeri ATCC 7744 have been determined, and the peptide transport system of ATP-binding proteins SapD and SapF encoded by the genes have been deduced. Alignment and comparison of the Sap proteins of V. fischeri, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Haemophilus influenzae Rd show that these proteins are homologous. The sap operon residing in the genome enables V. fischeri to transport peptides and resist antimicrobial peptides. Nucleotide sequence and functional analyses confirm that the specific regulatory-region-like sequence R&R* that resides inside the sapD gene and before the sapF gene functions in gene expression and regulation; also, it is regulated by the LuxR-AI complex of the V. fischeri lux regulon. The putative upstream activator binding sequences SigmaUASI, SigmaUASII, SigmaUASIII TGTCGACTTGGGCCTCGCTGTCCGTATGCACA (72nd to 103rd bp), TGTCCGTATGCACA (90th to 103rd bp), and TGTTCAAGTACCAGAAAGACA (111st to 133rd bp) in the R&R* sequence, which are similar to the two-component regulator binding sequence TGT-N(8-12)-ACA and the LuxR-AI binding sequence ACCTGTAGGATCGTACAGGT in the regulatory region of the V. fischeri lux regulon, might be the specific sequences recognized by the LuxR-AI complex for enhancement.
