Urban environment decreases pollinator availability, fertility, and prolongs anthesis in the field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis Linnaeus, 1753)

Urbanization alters the natural environment, with broad negative impacts on living organisms. Urbanization can also disrupt plant-pollinator networks by reducing the abundance and diversity of invertebrates. Firstly, I investigated whether the field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) is an obligatory entomophilous plant because previous reports were ambiguous. Secondly, I investigated how the obligatory entomophilous plant, field bindweed, responds to urbanization by comparing the flowering duration (anthesis) and the reproductive success of field bindweeds in urban and rural populations. Unlike cross-pollinated flowers and controls, flowers experimentally prevented from pollination and self-pollinated flowers did not produce seeds, suggesting that the field bindweed is self-incompatible and obligatory entomophilous. The abundance of urban pollinators was 5-6 times lower than the abundance of rural pollinators, and flies (Diptera), beetles (Coleoptera) and moths (Lepidoptera) were significantly more negatively influenced by the urban environment than hymenopterans (Hymenoptera). Urban plants showed significantly longer anthesis duration and lower reproductive success than rural plants. Illuminance and low pollinator abundance were negatively associated with the duration of the anthesis, but relative humidity did not affect the anthesis. Prolonged duration of the anthesis may be an adaptation to pollinator scarcity because more prolonged flowering increases the likelihood of pollination. Future research should unravel whether the longer anthesis of urban flowers is determined by behavioral plasticity or by the evolutionary selection of plants with a genetically determined longer anthesis.

Induced resistance to herbivory and the intelligent plant

Plant induced responses to environmental stressors are increasingly studied in a behavioral ecology context. This is particularly true for plant induced responses to herbivory that mediate direct and indirect defenses, and tolerance. These seemingly adaptive alterations of plant defense phenotypes in the context of other environmental conditions have led to the discussion of such responses as intelligent behavior. Here we consider the concept of plant intelligence and some of its predictions for chemical information transfer in plant interaction with other organisms. Within this framework, the flow, perception, integration, and storage of environmental information are considered tunable dials that allow plants to respond adaptively to attacking herbivores while integrating past experiences and environmental cues that are predictive of future conditions. The predictive value of environmental information and the costs of acting on false information are important drivers of the evolution of plant responses to herbivory. We identify integrative priming of defense responses as a mechanism that allows plants to mitigate potential costs associated with acting on false information. The priming mechanisms provide short- and long-term memory that facilitates the integration of environmental cues without imposing significant costs. Finally, we discuss the ecological and evolutionary prediction of the plant intelligence hypothesis.

Light-dependent chloroplast relocation in wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca)

Chloroplast photorelocation is a vital organellar response that optimizes photosynthesis in plants amid fluctuating environmental conditions. Chloroplasts exhibit an accumulation response, in which they move toward weak light to enhance photoreception, and an avoidance response, in which they move away from strong light to avoid photodamage. Although chloroplast photorelocation has been extensively studied in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, little is known about this process in the economically important crop strawberry. Here, we investigated chloroplast photorelocation in leaf mesophyll cells of wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca), a diploid relative of commercially cultivated octoploid strawberry (F. × ananassa). Microscopy observation revealed that the periclinal area of leaf mesophyll cells in F. vesca is considerably smaller than that of A. thaliana. Given this small cell size, we investigated chloroplast photorelocation in F. vesca by measuring light transmittance in leaves. Weak blue light induced the accumulation response, whereas strong blue light induced the avoidance response. Unexpectedly, strong red light also induced the accumulation response in F. vesca. These findings shed light on chloroplast photorelocation as an intracellular response, laying the foundation for enhancing photosynthesis and productivity in Fragaria.

Vegetal memory through the lens of transcriptomic changes - recent progress and future practical prospects for exploiting plant transcriptional memory

Plant memory plays an important role in the efficient and rapid acclimation to a swiftly changing environment. In addition, since plant memory can be inherited, it is also of adaptive and evolutionary importance. The ability of a plant to store, retain, retrieve and delete information on acquired experience is based on cellular, biochemical and molecular networks in the plants. This review offers an up-to-date overview on the formation, types, checkpoints of plant memory based on our current knowledge and focusing on its transcriptional aspects, the transcriptional memory. Roles of long and small non-coding RNAs are summarized in the regulation, formation and the cooperation between the different layers of the plant memory, i.e. in the establishment of epigenetic changes associated with memory formation in plants. The RNA interference mechanisms at the RNA and DNA level and the interplays between them are also presented. Furthermore, this review gives an insight of how exploitation of plant transcriptional memory may provide new opportunities for elaborating promising cost-efficient, and effective strategies to cope with the ever-changing environmental perturbations, caused by climate change. The potentials of plant memory-based methods, such as crop priming, cross acclimatization, memory modification by miRNAs and associative use of plant memory, in the future's agriculture are also discussed.

Extending cognition: a vegetal rejoinder to extensionless thought and to extended cognition

In this paper, we propose a crucial supplement to the framework of plant cognition, namely extending cognition. We argue that plants and other organisms with an open-ended body plan actively extend their cognition when growing tissues or organs. Their cognition expands with their body expansion. After considering the defining features of extending cognition, we present a model where growth, along with aspects of plant physiology (e.g. biochemical exudates), as well as the "negative extension" of growing away from obstacles or stressful environments, are the building blocks for a more refined understanding of plant cognition. We conclude by outlining the general implications of the theory of extending cognition and indicating directions for future research.

Comparative analysis of geotypic variations in the proteome of Nostoc commune

Cyanobacterium Nostoc commune is a filamentous terrestrial prokaryotic organism widely distributed, which suggest its high adaptive potential to environmental or abiotic stress. Physiological parameters and proteomic analysis were performed in two accession of N. commune with the aim to elucidate the differences of physiological trails between distant geotypes, namely Antarctic (AN) and central European (CE). The result obtained clearly showed that the AN geotype demonstrates elevated levels of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, and phycobiliproteins, indicative of its adaptation to environmental stress as referred by comparison to CE sample. Additionally, we employed LC-MS analysis to investigate the proteomes of N. commune from AN and CE geotypes. In total, 1147 proteins were identified, among which 646 proteins expressed significant (up-regulation) changes in both accessions. In the AN geotype, 83 exclusive proteins were identified compared to 25 in the CE geotype. Functional classification of the significant proteins showed a large fraction involved in photosynthesis, amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and protein biosynthesis. Further analysis revealed some defense-related proteins such as, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase, which are rather explicitly expressed in the AN N. commune. The last two proteins suggest a more stressful condition in AN N. commune. In summary, our findings highlight biochemical processes that safeguard the AN geotype of N. commune from extreme environmental challenges, not recorded in CE accession, probably due to less stressful environment in Europe. This study brings the first ever proteomic analysis of N. commune, emphasizing the need for additional investigations into the climate adaptation of this species with rather plastic genome.

Expression responses of XTH genes in tomato and potato to environmental mechanical forces: focus on behavior in response to rainfall, wind and touch

Rainfall, wind and touch, as mechanical forces, were mimicked on 6-week-old soil-grown tomato and potato under controlled conditions. Expression level changes of xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase genes (XTHs) of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Micro Tom; SlXTHs) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desirée; StXTHs) were analyzed in response to these mechanical forces. Transcription intensity of every SlXTHs of tomato was altered in response to rainfall, while the expression intensity of 72% and 64% of SlXTHs was modified by wind and touch, respectively. Ninety-one percent of StXTHs (32 out of 35) in potato responded to the rainfall, while 49% and 66% of the StXTHs were responsive to the wind and touch treatments, respectively. As previously demonstrated, all StXTHs were responsive to ultrasound treatment, and all were sensitive to one or more of the environmental mechanical factors examined in the current study. To our best knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that these ubiquitous mechanical environmental cues, such as rainfall, wind and touch, influence the transcription of most XTHs examined in both species.

Exogenous melatonin delays leaves senescence and enhances saline and alkaline stress tolerance in grape seedlings

Saline and alkaline stress is one of the major abiotic stresses facing agricultural production, which severely inhibits the growth and yield of plant. The application of plant growth regulators can effectively prevent crop yield reduction caused by saline and alkaline stress. Exogenous melatonin (MT) can act as a signaling molecule involved in the regulation of a variety of physiological processes in plants, has been found to play a key role in enhancing the improvement of plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. However, the effects of exogenous MT on saline and alkaline tolerance of table grape seedlings and its mechanism have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of exogenous MT on morphological and physiological growth of table grape seedlings (Vitis vinifera L.) under saline and alkaline stress. The results showed that saline and alkaline stress resulted in yellowing and wilting of grape leaves and a decrease in chlorophyll content, whereas the application of exogenous MT alleviated the degradation of chlorophyll in grape seedling leaves caused by saline and alkaline stress and promoted the accumulation of soluble sugars and proline content. In addition, exogenous MT increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, which resulted in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by saline and alkaline stress. In conclusion, exogenous MT was involved in the tolerance of grape seedlings to saline and alkaline stress, and enhanced the saline and alkaline resistance of grape seedlings to promote the growth and development of the grape industry in saline and alkaline areas.

Stimulatory effects of smoke solution and biogas digestate slurry application on photosynthesis, growth, and methylation profiling of solanum tuberosum

Biostimulants are obtained from various sources like plants, animals, microorganisms, and industrial by-products as well as waste material. Their utilization in agriculture practices is being increased that is giving positive results. The purpose of the current study was to use plant-derived smoke (SMK) solution and biogas digestate (BGD) slurry as biostimulant to elucidate their impact on potato (Solanum tuberosum) performance. The experiment was conducted in lab as well as field conditions, and SMK and BGD solutions were prepared in varying concentrations such as SMK 1:500, SMK 1:250, BGD 50:50, and BGD 75:25. Foliar applications were performed thrice during experiments and data were collected related to photosynthesis, growth, pigments, and genome-wide methylation profiling. Net photosynthesis rate (A) and water use efficiency (WUE) were found higher in SMK- and BGD-treated lab and field grown plants. Among pigments, BGD-treated plants depicted higher levels of Chl a and Chl b while SMK-treated plants showed higher carotenoid levels. Alongside, enhancement in growth-related parameters like leaf number and dry weight was also observed in both lab- and field-treated plants. Furthermore, DNA methylation profile of SMK- and BGD-treated plants depicted variation compared to control. DNA methylation events increased in all the treatments compared to control except for SMK 1:500. These results indicate that smoke and slurry both act as efficient biostimulants which result in better performance of plants. Biostimulants also affected the genome-wide DNA methylation profile that resultantly might have changed the plant gene expression profiling and played its role in plant responsiveness to these biostimulants. However, there is need to elucidate a possible synergistic effect of SMK and BGD on plant growth along with gene expression profiling.

Was priority setting considered in COVID-19 response planning? A global comparative analysis

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments across the world to consider how to prioritize resource allocation. Most countries produced pandemic preparedness plans that guide and coordinate healthcare, including how to allocate scarce resources such as ventilators, human resources, and therapeutics. The objective of this study was to compare and contrast the extent to which established parameters for effective priority setting (PS) were incorporated into COVID-19 pandemic response planning in several countries around the world.

Methods

We used the Kapriri and Martin framework for effective priority setting and performed a quantitative descriptive analysis to explore whether and how countries' type of health system, political, and economic contexts impacted the inclusion of those parameters in their COVID-19 pandemic plans. We analyzed 86 country plans across six regions of the World Health Organization.

Results

The countries sampled represent 40% of nations in AFRO, 54.5% of EMRO, 45% of EURO, 46% of PAHO, 64% of SEARO, and 41% of WPRO. They also represent 39% of all HICs in the world, 39% of Upper-Middle, 54% of Lower-Middle, and 48% of LICs. No pattern in attention to parameters of PS emerged by WHO region or country income levels. The parameters: evidence of political will, stakeholder participation, and use of scientific evidence/ adoption of WHO recommendations were each found in over 80% of plans. We identified a description of a specific PS process in 7% of the plans; explicit criteria for PS in 36.5%; inclusion of publicity strategies in 65%; mention of mechanisms for appealing decisions or implementing procedures to improve internal accountability and reduce corruption in 20%; explicit reference to public values in 15%; and a description of means for enhancing compliance with the decisions in 5%.

Conclusion

The findings provide a basis for policymakers to reflect on their prioritization plans and identify areas that need to be strengthened. Overall, there is little consideration for explicit prioritization processes and tools and restricted attention to equity considerations; this may be a starting point for policymakers interested in improving future preparedness and response planning. Although the study focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, priority setting remains one of the policymakers' most prominent challenges. Policymakers should consider integrating systematic priority setting in their routine decision-making processes.

Bacterial community and filamentous population of industrial wastewater treatment plants in Belgium

The discharge of industrial water requires the removal of its pollutants, where biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the most used systems. Biological WWTPs make use of activated sludge (AS), where bacteria are responsible for the removal of pollutants. However, our knowledge of the microbial communities of industrial plants is limited. Understanding the microbial population is essential to provide solutions to industrial problems such as bulking. The aim of this study was to identify at a high taxonomic resolution the bacterial population of 29 industrial WWTPs using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Our results revealed that the main functional groups were dominated by Thauera and Zoogloea within denitrifiers, Dechloromonas in phosphate-accumulating organisms, and Defluviicoccus in glycogen-accumulating organisms. The activated sludge characterization indicated that 59% of the industrial plants suffered from bulking sludge, with DSVI values of up to 448 mL g-1. From the bulking cases, 72% corresponded to filamentous bulking with Thiothrix as the most abundant filament; meanwhile, the other 28% corresponded to viscous bulking sludge in which Zoogloea was the most abundant genus. Furthermore, the bacterial population did not share a core of taxa across all industrial plants. However, 20 genera were present in at least 50% of the plants comprising the general core, including Thauera, Ca. Competibacter, and several undescribed microorganisms. Moreover, statistical analysis revealed that wastewater salinity strongly affected the microbial richness of the industrial plants. The bacterial population across industrial plants differed considerably from each other, resulting in unique microbial communities that are attributed to the specificity of their wastewaters. KEY POINTS: • The general core taxa of industrial plants were mostly made up of undescribed bacterial genera. • Filamentous bacteria constituted on average 4.1% read abundance of the industrial WWTPs. • Viscous bulking remains a significant type of bulking within industrial WWTPs.

Ten steps towards integrated decision making for ecological restoration in cities: Rewilding the European beaver (Castor fiber) in Berlin, Germany

Ensuring a livable city for all within the more-than-human discourse, restoration of urban ecosystems requires careful consideration of both human and non-human needs. However, traditional assessments and therefore most management plans usually fail to include the latter as a core planning requirement. This article presents and explains a 10-step method which simultaneously and actively considers both to identify potential restoration areas within urban ecosystems. To do so, a Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis for the multispecies needs identification is combined with a Multicriteria Spatial Decision Support System (MCSDSS) for the spatial assessment. To validate this method, a case study of Berlin, Germany, an explicitly urban case, is presented. The aim of the study was to evaluate the ecosystem restoration (rewilding) potential of the city's riparian and riverine ecosystems through the enhancement of Eurasian beaver habitats.•Method combining SWOT analysis with MCSDSS for an integrated spatial assessment•Well-suited for multispecies (human and non-human) perspective on urban nature restoration.

A stochastic multi-host model for West Nile virus transmission

When initially introduced into a susceptible population, a disease may die out or result in a major outbreak. We present a Continuous-Time Markov Chain model for enzootic WNV transmission between two avian host species and a single vector, and use multitype branching process theory to determine the probability of disease extinction based upon the type of infected individual initially introducing the disease into the population - an exposed vector, infectious vector, or infectious host of either species. We explore how the likelihood of disease extinction depends on the ability of each host species to transmit WNV, vector biting rates on host species, and the relative abundance of host species, as well as vector abundance. Theoretical predictions are compared to the outcome of stochastic simulations. We find the community composition of hosts and vectors, as well as the means of disease introduction, can greatly affect the probability of disease extinction.

Birds influence vegetation coverage and structure on sandy biogeomorphic islands in the Dutch Wadden Sea

Small uninhabited islands form important roosting and breeding habitats for many coastal birds. Previous studies have demonstrated that guano can promote ecosystem productivity and functionality on island ecosystems. Here, we assess the role of external nutrient input by coastal birds on the vegetation structure and coverage on sandy biogeomorphic islands, where island-forming processes depend on vegetation-sedimentation feedbacks. As a first step, we investigated whether breeding birds affect vegetation productivity on sandy back-barrier islands in the Wadden Sea. Using a combination of bird observations and plant stable isotope (δ15N) analyses, we demonstrate that (i) breeding birds transport large quantities of nutrients via their faecal outputs to these islands annually and that (ii) this external nitrogen source influences vegetation development on these sandy, nutrient-limited, islands. Based on these results we discuss how this avian nutrient pump could impact island development and habitat suitability for coastal birds and discuss future directions for research. In general, we conclude that avian subsidies have the potential to affect both the ecological and biogeomorphic functioning of coastal soft-sediment systems. However, the strength and scale of especially these biogeomorphic interactions are not fully understood. For the conservation of both threatened coastal birds and sandy back-barrier islands and the design of appropriate management strategies, we argue that three-way interactions between birds, vegetation and sandy island morphodynamics need to be further elucidated.

Site characteristics determine the prevalence of extreme weather events affecting freshwater macroinvertebrate communities

Understanding the impacts of extreme weather events on freshwater ecosystems is imperative during a time when a multitude of challenges compromises these environments' health. Exploring how such events affect macroinvertebrate communities in rivers sheds light on the resilience of freshwater ecosystems, which is essential for human well-being and biodiversity conservation. In this study, long-term time series of benthic macroinvertebrate communities from four sites along three freshwater streams within the Rhine-Main-Observatory Long-Term Ecological Research site in Germany were analyzed. Each of them was sampled annually over a span of ~20 years to assess the impacts of extreme weather events (floods, droughts, and extreme heat) on macroinvertebrate communities. The findings reveal that the effects of extreme events are site-specific, suggesting that the impacts of an extreme event can vary based on several potential factors, including the life history traits of the organisms within the community and, among others, the hydrography of the site. Moreover, the analysis highlights that the cumulative impact of these events over time is more significant than the impact of a single event's magnitude, while following distinct temporal dynamics. This underscores the importance of considering both the temporal dynamics and the biological characteristics of communities when evaluating the consequences of extreme weather events on biodiversity, illustrating that the resilience of freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity under such conditions depends on a complex interplay of factors rather than the severity of individual events.

Landscape crop diversity contributes to higher pollination effectiveness and positively affects rapeseed quality in Mediterranean agricultural landscapes

Pollination is crucial for biodiversity and food security. Heterogeneous agricultural landscapes have a positive effect on pollinator abundance and enhance crop production and quality. In this study, we explored the effects of three landscape features (past crop diversity measured as the Equivalent Richness of crop functional Groups in the previous year [ERGp], semi-natural habitat percentage [SNH], and mean field size [MFS]) and pollinator densities (wild bees [WB] and honey bees [HB]) on pollination and seed quantity and quality in rapeseed crops. Surveying the pollinator density in 20 rapeseed fields revealed a positive relationship with ERGp in the landscape. A pollinator exclusion experiment compared bagged and open-pollinated self-compatible rapeseed plants and revealed insect pollination effectiveness (fruits per flower and number of seeds per pod) and seed quality (oil content). Seed parameters were evaluated in relation to pollinator density (WB-HB) and landscape characteristics. The ERGp emerged as a crucial landscape feature that positively impacted WB density. When insect pollinators were excluded, plants exhibited reduced pollination effectiveness and seed quality. Analysis of open-pollinated plants highlighted ERGp as the most influential variable, positively affecting both sets of parameters. The MFS and SNH showed different but important relationships. Total tocopherol and α-tocopherol were positively correlated with pollinator density in HB, whereas WB showed a positive correlation with γ-tocopherol levels. Increased ERGp positively affected pollinator density and pollination effectiveness, thereby improving oilseed rape production quantity and quality. This study provides new insights into agroecosystem management and pollinator-friendly practices.

Impact of elevated CO2 on soil microbiota: A meta-analytical review of carbon and nitrogen metabolism

In the face of 21st-century challenges driven by population growth and resource depletion, understanding the intricacies of climate change is crucial for environmental sustainability. This review systematically explores the interaction between rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and soil microbial populations, with possible feedback effects on climate change and terrestrial carbon (C) cycling through a meta-analytical approach. Furthermore, it investigates the enzymatic activities related to carbon acquisition, gene expression patterns governing carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and metagenomic and meta-transcriptomic dynamics in response to elevated CO2 levels. The study reveals that elevated CO2 levels substantially influence soil microbial communities, increasing microbial biomass C and respiration rate by 15 % and upregulating genes involved in carbon and nitrogen metabolism by 12 %. Despite a 14 % increase in C-acquiring enzyme activity, there is a 5 % decrease in N-acquiring enzyme activity, indicating complex microbial responses to CO2 changes. Additionally, fungal marker ratios increase by 14 % compared to bacterial markers, indicating potential ecosystem changes. However, the current inadequacy of data on metagenomic and meta-transcriptomic processes underscores the need for further research. Understanding soil microbial feedback mechanisms is crucial for elucidating the role of rising CO2 levels in carbon sequestration and climate regulation. Consequently, future research should prioritize a comprehensive elucidation of soil microbial carbon cycling, greenhouse gas emission dynamics, and their underlying drivers.

A practical approach for extracting the photosystem II (PSII) contribution to near-infrared solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

Recent studies have indicated a good potential for using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to estimate photosynthetic CO2 assimilation. SIF can be emitted by both Photosystem I (PSI) and Photosystem II (PSII), but it is the SIF signals from PSII which are related to photosynthetic carbon fixation. However, since top-of-canopy SIF observations (SIFTOC) always contain contributions from both photosystems, to mechanistically estimate gross primary productivity (GPP) from SIF, it is essential to extract PSII SIF from SIFTOC. Based on the differences in the relative contribution of PSII across different wavelengths, we propose a practical approach for extracting PSII contribution to SIFTOC at the near-infrared (NIR) band (fPSII_760) using measurements of SIFTOC in the red and NIR spectral regions. A leaf-scale concurrent instrument was developed to assess the response of fPSII_760 under varying environments. For winter-wheat leaves, as light intensity increased from 0 to 400 μmol m-2 s-1, fPSII_760 rose from 0.6 to 0.8; with further increase in light intensity to 1800 μmol m-2 s-1, fPSII_760 consistently decreased to 0.65. There was a slight decreasing trend in fPSII_760 with rising temperatures, with values dropping from 0.65 at 15 °C to 0.61 at 40 °C. We found that variations in fPSII_760 are due to changes in the fluorescence yield of PSII, with the two having a positively proportional relationship. We also estimated canopy-scale fPSII_760 for a winter-wheat study site: fPSII_760 varied from 0.61 to 0.83, with a mean value of 0.78 during the peak growing season. A comparison with eddy covariance-derived GPP reveals that GPP estimated with dynamic fPSII_760 was more accurate than that calculated using fixed fPSII_760, with R2 increasing from 0.6 to 0.84. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the link between SIF and photosynthetic CO2 assimilation, paving the way for more effective use of SIF to estimate GPP.

Relationships between radiation, wildfire and the soil microbial communities in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone

There is considerable uncertainty regarding radiation's effects on biodiversity in natural complex ecosystems typically subjected to multiple environmental disturbances and stresses. In this study we characterised the relationships between soil microbial communities and estimated total absorbed dose rates to bacteria, grassy vegetation and trees in the Red Forest region of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Samples were taken from sites of contrasting ecological histories and along burn and no burn areas following a wildfire. Estimated total absorbed dose rates to bacteria reached levels one order of magnitude higher than those known to affect bacteria in laboratory studies. Sites with harsher ecological conditions, notably acidic pH and low soil moisture, tended to have higher radiation contamination levels. No relationship between the effects of fire and radiation were observed. Microbial groups that correlated with high radiation sites were mostly classified to taxa associated with high environmental stress habitats or stress resistance traits. Distance-based linear models and co-occurrence analysis revealed that the effects of radiation on the soil microbiome were minimal. Hence, the association between high radiation sites and specific microbial groups is more likely a result of the harsher ecological conditions in these sites, rather than due to radiation itself. In this study, we provide a starting point for understanding the relationship between soil microbial communities and estimated total absorbed radiation dose rates to different components of an ecosystem highly contaminated with radiation. Our results suggest that soil microbiomes adapted to natural soil conditions are more likely to be resistant to ionising radiation than expected from laboratory studies, which demonstrates the importance of assessing the impact of ionising radiation on soil microbial communities under field conditions.

River functionality influences the distribution of the dipper Cinclus cinclus (Linnaeus, 1758)

The dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is a species strongly linked to the riparian ecosystem, known to feed on aquatic macroinvertebrates, which are sensitive to water pollution. For this, dippers have been proposed as useful bioindicators of water quality. While the distribution and ecology of the dipper are well known in Northern European rivers, few studies focus on this in Central Italy, lacking data for dipper conservation. Here, we aimed to (i) assess the dipper occurrence related to water quality using biotic indices based on diatom and macroinvertebrate communities, and (ii) evaluate the river ecosystem's overall state, through the River Functionality Index and land-use analysis in buffer areas. Overall, water quality alone does not explain the dipper occurrence, as the species was not found in many potentially suitable sites with good or high-water quality. Moreover, the diversity of the diatom and macroinvertebrate communities was not a sufficient constraint either. Conversely, the dipper occurrence significantly correlated with the River Functionality Index, which integrates several riparian ecosystem factors, indicating that well-preserved ecosystems with high functionality levels are important for dipper occurrence. Land use analyses in the areas surrounding the presence sites have shown, although not significantly, a fair level of naturalness, potentially favouring the riparian zone maintenance. As the dipper was considered in decline and threatened in Central Italy, further research on its auto-ecology and conservation threats is urgently needed. Finally, given the link between the species and the riparian ecosystem, a charismatic species such as the dipper could be used as an umbrella species in protection and conservation projects for the benefit of the entire riparian belt, which represents a buffer area of fundamental importance between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, although often resulted severely reduced and fragmented.

Response of soil moisture to rainfall following deep soil drying in China's hilly loess lands

Deep soil drying is a physical soil phenomenon that has become increasingly characteristic to artificial afforestation on China's Loess Plateau. Current research is largely short of conclusive reports on soil moisture recovery following deep soil drying in afforested lands. In this study, a 10-m deep underground column was constructed at Pengyang Experimental Station in Ningxia. The CS650-CR1000 automatic soil moisture monitoring system and BLJW-4 small meteorological observation stations were used to respectively monitor soil moisture and meteorological conditions in the study area for the period 2014-2019. The local rainfall was classified and the characteristics of soil infiltration analyzed at both monthly and annual scales. The results showed that: i) Deep soil moisture recovery in the semi-arid Loess Plateau region depended mainly on 25-49.9 mm and >50 mm types of rainfall; together accounting for 35.44 % of the precipitation. ii) Deep soil moisture replenishment occurred mainly for the period from April to October. While this accounted for 30.13 % of the precipitation, evaporation loss accounted for 69.87 % of it. With increasing monthly rainfall (Pm), the variation in monthly infiltration depth (Zm) was quadratic in shape - where Zm = -0.0094 Pm2 + 3.7702 Pm (R2 = 0.9577). iii) At the annual scale, deep soil moisture replenishment was mainly driven by year-on-year infiltration water accumulation. This is because a single year precipitation infiltration was not enough to replenish deep soil moisture. The cumulative infiltration depth for 2014-2019 was 180, 260, 400, 700, 1000 > 1000 cm. It suggested that soil water infiltration and deep dry soil recovery occurred at different times under rainfed conditions in the semi-arid loess hills in China. This is key for in-depth studies of the hydrological process in dry soil regions.

Extramatrical mycelial biomass is mediated by fine root mass and ectomycorrhizal fungal community composition across tree species

In many ecosystems, a large fraction of gross primary production is invested in mycorrhiza. Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) mycelium is involved in regulating soil carbon and nutrient cycling. However, little is known about how mycelial biomass, production and turnover differ depending on ECM fungal community composition and associated tree species. We quantified fine root biomass and length using soil cores, and mycelial traits (biomass, production, and turnover) using mesh-bags and ergosterol analysis, and identified ECM exploration types by Illumina MiSeq sequencing of four ECM-dominated tree species (Picea asperata, Larix gmelinii, Quercus aquifolioides and Betula albosinensis) in subalpine forest. The ECM fungal community composition separated between needle-leaved and broadleaved species, and between evergreen and deciduous species. The ratio of mycelial to fine root biomass was similar across the species regardless of genus-scale community composition and the relative abundance of exploration types. Compared to the other species, Q. aquifolioides displayed higher fine root biomass and mycelial biomass and production, dominated by contact-short exploration type. Mycelial turnover rate tended to be lowest in P. asperata, dominated by medium-long exploration type. Much higher production of mycelium and only slightly higher turnover rate in Q. aquifolioides suggests that its steady-state mycelial biomass would be higher than of the other species. Moreover, compared to the two deciduous species, with similar production but somewhat lower turnover rate, the standing crop of mycelium in P. asperata may stabilize at a higher value. Our findings, that exploration type may affect production and turnover, highlight the importance of characterizing ECM fungal communities by exploration types when estimating the contribution of mycelium biomass to forest carbon sink and storage.

Salinity stress on three representative species from Mediterranean semifixed dunes: Assessment of salinity exposure and substrate conductivity data reveal variable response strategies and tolerance between species

Coastal ecotones can disrupt natural conditions, yielding intricate ecological contexts where salinity plays a variable role. The aim of this study was to assess the salinity effect on three species representatives of semifixed dune (Crucianella maritima, Helianthemum caput-felis and Teucrium dunense). Field data were collected to assess plant cover in semifixed dunes, ecotone with other coastal habitats, and artificial Posidonia oceanica wracks. Soil samples were collected, and conductivity measured. Then, experimental exposure to salinity was conducted with 6 seawater (SW) treatments (Control, 6.25 % SW, 12.5 % SW, 25 % SW, 50 % SW, 100 % SW). Flowering, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and enzymatic antioxidant measurements were conducted after two months of exposure. In the field trial, species presence varied depending on the habitat and was null on P. oceanica. The relation between conductivity and species abundance showed moderate tolerance for the three species. For C. maritima this relation was variable depending on the habitat. Experimental data suggest moderate tolerance with stress occurring at 25 % SW onwards. Gas exchange response to salinity was similar among species, but more drastic reduction in assimilation rate and larger decrease in water use efficiency was observed for C. maritima. Instead, photoinhibition occurred in H. caput-felis and T. dunense but was absent in C. maritima likely related to the fact that H. caput-felis and T. dunense activated catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes, while C. maritima showed activation of glutathione-related enzymes. Malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in C. maritma and decreased for the other species indicating a more complex involvement of MDA under stress conditions. Flowering response to salinity was overall more resilient in T. dunense. Our results, based on field conductivity data and measurements of physiological, antioxidant, and reproductive traits, delineate specific tolerance differences and strategies towards salinity for Mediterranean semifixed dune species.

Ecosystem engineers cause biodiversity spill-over: Beavers are associated with breeding bird assemblages on both wetlands and adjacent terrestrial habitats

The influence of ecosystem engineers on habitats and communities is commonly acknowledged in a site-bounded context, i.e. in places directly affected by the presence of the focal species. However, the spatial extent of the effects of such engineering is poorly understood, raising the question as to what impact they have on ecosystems situated beyond the species' direct influence. Beavers Castor spp., iconic ecosystem engineers, are capable of significantly transforming aquatic ecosystems. Their presence boosts biodiversity in adjacent aquatic and riparian habitats, but as a result of cascading processes, beavers may affect terrestrial habitats situated beyond the range of their immediate activity. Our study investigates the breeding bird assemblage along a spatial gradient from the water to the forest interior on central European watercourses modified and unmodified by beavers. The results show that beaver sites are characterized by a higher species richness and abundance of breeding birds than unmodified watercourses. Such sites also host a different species pool, as 27 % of the recorded bird species occurred exclusively on the beaver sites. The effect of the beaver's presence on the bird assemblage extended to adjacent terrestrial habitats located up to 100 m from the water's edge, where the species richness and abundance was higher and the species composition was substantially modified. We also found a positive correlation between the total area of beaver wetland and the numbers of bird species and individuals recorded. Our study adds to the general understanding of the spatial context of the ecosystem engineering concept, as the changes brought about by engineers have an influence beyond the area of their immediate occurrence. Our work also has implications for landscape planning and management, where existing beaver sites with terrestrial buffer zones may constitute a network of biodiversity hotspots.

Ingestion of chitosan-starch blends: Effect on the survival of supralittoral amphipods

Sandy beach ecosystems are particularly affected by plastic pollution. Supralittoral amphipods are important components of the food web in sandy beaches and their ability to ingest microplastics and bioplastics has been assessed. Chitosan, a polysaccharide obtained by deacetylation of chitin, the second most abundant polymer in the world, represents an interesting component to produce novel bioplastics in combination with other biopolymers like starch. Here, the possibility of ingesting chitosan-starch blends and the possible effects on the amphipod Talitrus saltator were investigated. Groups of adult individuals were fed with sheets containing mixtures of chitosan and starch in different percentages for 7 and 14 days. The results showed that chitosan ingestion is dependent on the percentage of starch present in the mixture. Moreover, FTIR analyses of both sheets and faecal pellets after consumption show that chitosan is not digested. Furthermore, the survival rate of amphipods fed with a mixture of chitosan and starch decreases after one week compared to the control groups (100 % starch and paper), and drops drastically to 0 % after two weeks the experiment began. In addition, consumption of 100 % chitosan is negligible. Therefore, the results of the experimental observations evidenced that chitosan is avoided as food resource and its consumption significantly affects the survival capacity of T. saltator. It is emphasized that the release of mixtures of chitosan and starch into the marine environment appears to be dangerous for littoral amphipods.

Cumulative effects of experimental nitrogen deposition on soil chemistry in a desert steppe: A 12-year field study

Although the effects of human-enhanced atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are well documented, the response of dryland soils to N deposition remains unclear owing to the divergence in hydrological outputs and soil heterogeneity. We selected a typical desert steppe in western China to simulate the effects of long-term N deposition by applying 0 (CK), 3.5, 7, and 14 g N m-2 yr-1 for 12 consecutive years. We found that, compared with the CK plots, the total N content of the upper (0-10 cm) and lower (10-20 cm) soil layers in fertilized plots increased by 8.3-14.6 % and 2.4-8.2 %, respectively. Correspondingly, the available, NH4+-, and NO3--N contents in the upper soil significantly increased by 25.5-68.3 %. However, in the lower soil, available and NO3--N contents were significantly lower than those in the CK plots, and their variation trend was opposite to that of NH4+-N, implying N turnover and leaching. As a result, the upper and lower soil pH in fertilized plots significantly decreased by 0.36-0.53 and 0.31-0.37 units; however, their CaCO3 content significantly increased by 9.8-22.8 % and 7.2-30.3 %, respectively. The total phosphorus (P) content in the upper and lower soil layers in fertilized plots significantly increased and decreased by 3.6-51.3 % and 16.7-62.5 %, respectively, however, both significantly decreased along the N fertilization gradient. Furthermore, the upper and lower soil organic carbon (SOC) content in the fertilized plots significantly increased by 57.7-78.1 % and 19.2-27.4 %, respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that available soil P was significantly negatively correlated with plant shoot Mn content (a proxy for rhizosphere carboxylates), whereas dissolved OC, SOC, and CaCO3 were significantly positively correlated, suggesting that Ca cycling is involved in P cycling and SOC sequestration. Our study suggests that long-term N input exacerbates P limitation in desert steppes, however, enhances SOC sequestration.

The inclusion of improved forest management in strategic forest planning and its impact on timber harvests, carbon and biodiversity conservation

In forestry, although the so-called nature-based climate solutions have usually been focused on the calculation of carbon captured in new afforestation projects, it should be noted that the increase in carbon associated with improvements in their management (Improved Forest Management) can also be computed. This type of carbon is not usually integrated into strategic forest planning models, nor has its possible degree of conflict with other regulation ecosystemic services, like biodiversity conservation, been verified. In this research, those two issues have been approached by calculating a baseline in an emblematic forest with an extensive forestry history. For this purpose, we have designed two scenarios, i.e., one linked to its current management (Business As Usual, BAU) and another justified by the inclusion of Improved Forest Management (IFM). The results reveal a notable conflict between the carbon captured and the values of the indicators used to measure biodiversity. In order to reach a compromise between both scenarios, a multi-criteria model has been proposed that could be more attractive than the above ones. In addition, the carbon profit credits in the first ten years have been computed under the IFM scenario; the latter could be, a priori, an object of transaction in a voluntary carbon market. In conclusion, our model generates feasible solutions that allow the integration of IFM into strategic planning. Besides, those solutions show interesting tradeoffs between carbon and biodiversity. This discord must be distinguished by the current state of the forest and its expected growth, as well as their influence on the values associated with provision ecosystem services, such as the present net value associated with timber harvests.

Deep-root respiration: The unknown CO2 removed from the atmosphere

Carbon (C) sequestration in soils is a promising CO2 removal approach. So far, the focus has been on how to increase the content of soil organic C (SOC), while the management soil inorganic C (SIC), i.e. carbonate minerals, has received little attention, because SIC is thought to be much less involved in biotic C cycling than SOC. However, in principle SIC management potentially provides a long-term solution, with a much greater capacity for C sequestration than SOC. The forgotten link is the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), i.e. CO2 species dissolved in soil solution, and its fate throughout the unsaturated zone (USZ). The return of CO2 respired by deep roots to the atmosphere, either directly through CO2 degassing or indirectly through DIC leaching, may not necessarily take place over decades or centuries. CO2 diffusion decreases sharply with depth due to reduced porosity of the subsoil and more water-filled pores. The downward water percolation rate is often only a few centimeters per year, and the large amount of respired CO2 compared to the leached DIC results in a relatively small amount of CO2 being transferred to the groundwater. Therefore, respired CO2 at deeper soil depth can be defined as a hitherto unknown ecosystem service of deep-rooted plants i.e. providing a net C sink as inorganic C in the USZ. A conservative estimation suggests a C sink as SIC of at least 80 kg C ha-1 y-1, comparable to reported annual C sequestration as SOC in temperate grasslands.

Toxicological assessment of cadmium exposure through Hyphantria cunea larvae on the predation fitness of Arma chinensis

Heavy metals are defined as an abiotic factor that affects the efficiency of biological pest control. This study constructed a cadmium (Cd)-polluted artificial diets-Hyphantria cunea-Arma chinensis food chain to analyze the effects of Cd exposure on the ability of A. chinensis to control H. cunea. The results revealed that Cd was transferred through the artificial diet to H. cunea larvae and A. chinensis nymphs via a biological amplification effect. After feeding on Cd-accumulated H. cunea larvae, the body weight of A. chinensis nymphs reduced, mortality increased, developmental duration prolonged, and the expression of growth regulatory genes (EX, cycE, and MER) decreased. Cd activated the antioxidant defense system of the nymphs, accompanied by a significant enhancement in the contents of H2O2 and MDA, marked damage to the midgut sub-microstructure, and a remarkable induction in the expression of genes crucial for the mitochondrial pathway/ER stress-apoptosis pathway. Cd significantly diminished the contents of total amino acids, glucose, free fatty acids, and expression of the genes (HK2, PFK, IDH1, and IDH2) essential for the TCA cycle and glycolysis in the nymphs. The preference of the A. chinensis nymphs to Cd-treated H. cunea larvae was evidently reduced. Cd diminished the search-ability, food intake, instantaneous attack rate, and maximum theoretical daily food intake but prolonged the feeding time of the nymphs. Taken together, Cd exposure reduces the ability of A. chinensis nymphs to control H. cunea and provides a new challenge for the efficiency of insect pest control using natural enemies. These findings have important reference value for optimizing pest control strategies in heavy metal polluted areas.

Climate factors determine large-scale spatial patterns of stomatal index in Chinese herbaceous and woody dicotyledonous plants

The stomatal index (SI, %) and its response to climate factors (temperature and precipitation) can help our understanding of terrestrial carbon and water cycling and plant adaptation in the ecosystem, however, consensus has not yet been reached in this regard. In this study, we compiled an extensive dataset from the Chinese flora to investigate the response of SI to environmental change, including 891 herbaceous and woody species from 188 published papers. The results showed that mean values of the adaxial SI and abaxial SI for all species were 14.06 and 19.22, respectively, and the ratio of adaxial to abaxial SI was 0.84. For the adaxial SI, abaxial SI, and the ratio of adaxial to abaxial SI, the range of these values varied between 0.05-43.67, 0.01-48.17, and 0.03-4.31, respectively. Compared with woody plants, herbaceous plants showed higher values in both adaxial and abaxial SI. In terms of the impact of climate factors, the abaxial SI of herbaceous plants changed slower than the adaxial SI, while woody plants showed the opposite trend. Threshold effects of increased temperature and precipitation on SI were observed, indicating that SI responded differently to changes in climate factors at different levels. Climate factors play a crucial role in driving the adaxial SI than abaxial SI. Our findings highlight the significant challenges posed by divergent responses of SI in forecasting future water and carbon cycles associated with climatic and environmental change.

Coping with stress: Salt type, concentration, and exposure history limit life history tradeoffs in response to road salt salinization

Substantial increases in the salinity of freshwater ecosystems has occurred around the globe from causes such as climate change, industrial operations, and the application of road deicing salts. We know very little about how plastic responses in life history traits or rapid evolution of new traits among freshwater organisms could promote stability in ecological communities affected by salinization. We performed a cohort life history analysis from birth to death with 180 individuals of a ubiquitous freshwater zooplankter to understand how life history traits are affected by exposure to two common salt types causing salinization-sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2)-across two environmentally relevant concentrations. We also tested if a multi-generational exposure history to high salinity altered life-history responses. We tracked and measured lifespan, time to maturation, brood size, brood interval, and body size. We found smaller brood sizes but slightly longer lifespans occurred at a low concentration of NaCl (230 mg Cl-/L). The longer lifespans led to more, albeit smaller broods, which generated a similar lifetime reproductive output compared to the no-salt control populations. At higher concentrations of NaCl and CaCl2, we found lifetime reproductive output was reduced by 23 % to 83 % relative to control populations because no tradeoff among life history traits occurred. In CaCl2, we observed shorter life spans, longer time intervals between smaller broods, and smaller body sizes leading to reduced lifetime reproductive output. We also found that a multi-generational exposure to the salt types did not convey any advantages for lifetime reproductive output. In some cases, the exposure history worsened the life history trait responses suggesting maladaptation. Our findings suggest that life history tradeoffs for freshwater species can occur in response to salinization, but these tradeoffs will largely depend on salt type and concentration, which will have implications for biodiversity and ecological stability.

Seasonal response of soil microbial community structure and life history strategies to winter snow cover change in a temperate forest

Snow cover provides a thermally stable and humid soil environment and thereby regulates soil microbial communities and biogeochemical cycling. A warmer world with large reductions in snow cover and earlier spring snowmelt may disrupt this stability and associated ecosystem functioning. Yet, little is known about the response of soil microbial communities to decreased snowpack and potential carry-over effects beyond the snow cover period. Herein, we tested this response by conducting a snowpack manipulation experiment (control, addition, and removal) in a temperate forest. Our results showed that fungi were more sensitive to changes in snowpack. Thicker snowpack increased the diversity of fungi, but had weak effects on the diversity of bacteria in winter. Thickening snow cover promoted the ratio of fungi to bacteria abundance across the year, and such relative increase in fungi abundance was largely driven by Basidiomycota phyla (Agaricomycetes class). Increased snowpack decreased soil nitrate concentration, and produced carry-over biogeochemical effects evidenced by increased summer β-1,4-glucosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase activities. On a seasonal scale, microbial biomass peaked at both winter and summer; winter microbial community was fungi dominated, while bacteria dominated in summer. The abundances of bacterial phyla had greater seasonal variation than fungal phyla. Specifically, Actinobacteria had greater dominance in winter than in summer, while Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia had greater abundance in summer than in winter. Microbial high yield-resource acquisition-stress tolerance life history strategies showed significant seasonal tradeoffs, i.e., resource acquisition and stress tolerance strategies dominated in summer, while high yield strategy dominated in winter. Overall, our findings underline that climate-induced reductions in snow cover can disrupt soil biogeochemical cycling also beyond the snow cover period due to shifts in soil microbial community structure and life history strategies.

Water level regime variation is a crucial driver for taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in seasonally flooded tropical forests

Floodplains contribute significantly to terrestrial ecosystem service provision but are also among the most vulnerable and degraded ecosystems worldwide. Heterogeneity in floodplain properties arises from variations in river-specific flood regimes, watershed characteristics, and valley morphology, influencing seasonally flooded forests' taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. This study addresses persisting knowledge gaps in floodplain ecology, focusing on the seasonally dry tropics. We explore the relationships between flood regime, environmental conditions, vegetation composition, functional and phylogenetic diversity, and the impact of environmental variables on above-ground biomass (AGB) and ecological strategies. The study spans six rivers in southeastern Brazil's main river basins: Rio Grande and São Francisco. We identified five eco-units in each floodplain based on flooding regimes and surveyed six plots per eco-unit. We measured trees with DBH > 5 cm and collected functional traits, along with detailed soil, climate, and water level data. We calculated plot-level floristic composition, taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity, wood density, and AGB. Functional and phylogenetic dissimilarity were analyzed, and the effects of climate, soil, and hydrological variables were quantified using generalized linear mixed models. We show how flood frequency and duration affect floristic composition across the floodplains. Taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity responded to climate, soil, and hydrological variables, while functional diversity responded primarily to hydrological variables, emphasizing the role of environmental filtering. Hydrological seasonality, soil fertility, and flood regime emerged as key factors shaping community structure and ecological strategies in the studied seasonally flooded tropical forests. Plot-level AGB responded to phosphorus but not to climate or hydrological variables. The study also highlights functional and phylogenetic dissimilarities among eco-units and basins, indicating potential climate change impacts.

Warming and rainfall reduction alter soil microbial diversity and co-occurrence networks and enhance pathogenic fungi in dryland soils

In this 9-year manipulative field experiment, we examined the impacts of experimental warming (2 °C, W), rainfall reduction (30 % decrease in annual rainfall, RR), and their combination (W + RR) on soil microbial communities and native vegetation in a semi-arid shrubland in south-eastern Spain. Warming had strong negative effects on plant performance across five coexisting native shrub species, consistently reducing their aboveground biomass growth and long-term survival. The impacts of rainfall reduction on plant growth and survival were species-specific and more variable. Warming strongly altered the soil microbial community alpha-diversity and changed the co-occurrence network structure. The relative abundance of symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) increased under W and W + RR, which could help buffer the direct negative impacts of climate change on their host plants nutrition and enhance their resistance to heat and drought stress. Indicator microbial taxa analyses evidenced that the marked sequence abundance of many plant pathogenic fungi, such as Phaeoacremonium, Cyberlindnera, Acremonium, Occultifur, Neodevriesia and Stagonosporopsis, increased significantly in the W and W + RR treatments. Moreover, the relative abundance of fungal animal pathogens and mycoparasites in soil also increased significantly under climate warming. Our findings indicate that warmer and drier conditions sustained over several years can alter the soil microbial community structure, composition, and network topology. The projected warmer and drier climate favours pathogenic fungi, which could offset the benefits of increased AMF abundance under warming and further aggravate the severe detrimental impacts of increased abiotic stress on native vegetation performance and ecosystem services in drylands.

Physiology and fertility of two gull species in relation to plastic additives' exposure

Understanding the impact of plastic and its additives on wild species is crucial as their presence in the environment increases. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), once used as flame retardants, were restricted due to known toxic effects, but are still detected in the environment. Naturally occurring methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-BDEs) can result from PBDE transformation and may cause similar hazardous effects. Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis, YLG) and Audouin's gulls (Ichthyaetus audouinii, AG) are highly susceptible to plastic additives, due to their distribution, trophic position, and behaviour. In this study, we assessed PBDEs and MeO-BDEs uptake in different tissues and their effects on physiological and reproductive parameters. Findings indicate that, apart from annual differences, adult AG accumulated more MeO-BDEs than YLG in a natural breeding habitat (Deserta), while the latter had lower PBDE levels than YLG breeding in the city of Porto. In relation to chicks, only YLG from Deserta showed higher PBDE concentrations than AG chicks. Individual analysis of each physiological parameter revealed impacts only for adult YLG from Deserta, with neurofunction and immune system inhibition at higher MeO-BDE concentrations. For chicks, AG showed impaired neurofunction, while YLG chicks from Porto exhibited potential genotoxicity effects triggered by higher MeO-BDE levels. Overall health analysis showed activation of antioxidant defences and compromised immune system in YLG adults from Porto due to high values of PBDEs, while chicks from Deserta exhibited inflammation and oxidative stress with high concentrations of MeO-BDEs in the same species. Fertility parameters showed significant differences for sperm counts though suggesting individuals may be able to compensate any exposure effects. This study confirms the widespread presence of plastic-associated compounds and their harmful effects on gulls, particularly on neurofunction, immune system, oxidative balance and fertility, especially due to the presence of MeO-BDEs.

Trade-offs in a reef-building coral after six years of thermal acclimation

There is growing evidence that reef-building corals can acclimate to novel and challenging thermal conditions. However, potential trade-offs that accompany acclimation remain largely unexplored. We investigated physiological trade-offs in colonies of a globally abundant coral species (Pocillopora acuta) that were acclimated ex situ to an elevated temperature of 31 °C (i.e., 1 °C above their bleaching threshold) for six years. By comparing them to conspecifics maintained at a cooler temperature, we found that the energy storage of corals was prioritized over skeletal growth at the elevated temperature. This was associated with the formation of higher density skeletons, lower calcification rates and consequently lower skeletal extension rates, which entails ramifications for future reef-building processes, structural complexity and reef community composition. Furthermore, symbionts were physiologically compromised at 31 °C and had overall lower energy reserves, likely due to increased exploitation by their host, resulting in an overall lower stress resilience of the holobiont. Our study shows how biological trade-offs of thermal acclimation unfold, helping to refine our picture of future coral reef trajectories. Importantly, our observations in this six-year study do not align with observations of short-term studies, where elevated temperatures were often associated with the depletion of energy reserves, highlighting the importance of studying acclimation of organisms at relevant biological scales.

Beyond the rootzone: Unveiling soil property and biota gradients around plants

Although the effects of plants on soil properties are well known, the effects of distance from plant roots to root-free soil on soil properties and associated soil organisms are much less studied. Previous research on the effects of distance from a plant explored specific soil organisms and properties, however, comparative studies across a wide range of plant-associated organisms and multiple model systems are lacking. We conducted a controlled greenhouse experiment using soil from two contrasting habitats. Within each soil type, we cultivated two plant species, individually and in combination, studying soil organisms and properties in the root centre, the root periphery, and the root-free zones. We showed that the distance from the cultivated plant (representing decreasing amount of plant roots) had a significant impact on the abiotic properties of the soil (pH and available P and N) and also on the composition of the fungal, bacterial, and nematode communities. The specific patterns, however, did not always match our expectations. For example, there was no significant relationship between the abundance of fungal pathogens and the distance from the cultivated plant compared to a strong decrease in the abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Changes in soil chemistry along the distance from the cultivated plant were probably one of the important drivers that affected bacterial communities. The abundance of nematodes also decreased with distance from the cultivated plant, and the rate of their responses reflected the distribution of their food sources. The patterns of soil changes along the gradient from plant to root-free soil were largely similar in two contrasting soil types and four plant species or their mixtures. This suggests that our results can be generalised to other systems and contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of soil legacy formation.

Resource partitioning influences levels of toxic trace elements in sympatric tropical seabirds

Morphologically similar species that occupy resource-limited environments tend to differ in their ecological traits in order to coexist, which may result in differential exposure to environmental threats. For instance, partitioning of feeding resources may influence contaminant exposure and bioaccumulation in marine predators through different diets or foraging habitats. Here, we sampled three tropical seabird species breeding in sympatry in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean for blood and feather trace element concentrations (As, Hg, Cd, Pb), and assessed their foraging ecology with bio-logging (GPS tracks and time-depth recorders), analysis of regurgitated prey, and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope mixing models. Red-billed tropicbirds (Phaethon aethereus), brown (Sula leucogaster) and masked (S. dactylatra) boobies differed in their preferred foraging locations, the range of foraging trips, diving parameters and diets. In addition, interspecific differences were detected in blood or feathers for all trace elements analyzed, suggesting influence of the differences observed in diet and space use. Red-billed tropicbirds had the largest foraging range over the continental shelf and over the slope, suggesting lower exposure to continental sources of metals. Brown and masked boobies had higher Hg concentrations than tropicbirds, higher δ15N values (a proxy for trophic level), and δ15N correlated with Hg levels, suggesting biomagnification of Hg along the food chain. Nonetheless, red-billed tropicbirds showed comparable levels of As and Cd in blood or feathers, and higher levels of Pb in both tissues in comparison to boobies, which may suggest overall exposure of seabirds in the region, through their diets and foraging areas. Resource partitioning is critical for allowing coexistence of different seabird species in shared breeding sites where they act as central-place foragers. Nonetheless, in scenarios of environmental pollution, these species-specific strategies lead to differential bioaccumulation, and thus distinct effects of pollution on populations are expected.

Adaptive forest management improves stand-level resilience of temperate forests under multiple stressors

Forests are expected to be strongly affected by modifications in climate and disturbance regimes, threatening their ability to sustain the provision of essential services. Promoting drought-tolerant species or functionally diverse stands have recently emerged as management options to cope with global change. Our study aimed at evaluating the impact of contrasting stand-level management scenarios on the resilience of temperate forests in eastern North America and central-western Europe using the individual process-based model HETEROFOR. We simulated the evolution of eight stands over 100 years under a future extreme climate according to four management scenarios (business as usual - BAU; climate change adaptation - CC; functional diversity approach - FD; no management - NM) while facing multiple disturbances, resulting in a total of 160 simulations. We found that FD demonstrated the greatest resilience regarding transpiration and tree biomass, followed by CC and then BAU, while these three scenarios were equivalent concerning the net primary production. These results were however dependent on forest type: increasing functional diversity was a powerful option to increase the resilience of coniferous plantations whereas no clear differences between BAU and adaptive management scenarios were detected in broadleaved and mixed stands. The FD promoted a higher level of tree species diversity than any other scenario, and all scenarios of management were similar regarding the amount of harvested wood. The NM always showed the lowest resilience, demonstrating that forest management could be an important tool to mitigate adverse effects of global change. Our study highlighted that tree-level process-based models are a relevant tool to identify suitable management options for adapting forests to global change provided that model limitations are considered, and that alternative management options, particularly those based on functional diversity, are promising and should be promoted from now on.

Effects of pre-treatment, historical age, and sample characteristics on the stable isotope analyses of killer whale (Orcinus orca) bone

RATIONALE

Stable isotope analysis of bone provides insight into animal foraging and allows for ecological reconstructions over time, however pre-treatment is required to isolate collagen. Pre-treatments typically consist of demineralization to remove inorganic components and/or lipid extraction to remove fats, but these protocols can differentially affect stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values depending on the chemicals, tissues, and/or species involved. Species-specific methodologies create a standard for comparability across studies and enhance understanding of collagen isolation from modern cetacean bone.

METHODS

Elemental analyzers coupled to isotope ratio mass spectrometers were used to measure the δ13C and δ15N values of powdered killer whale (Orcinus orca) bone that was intact (control) or subjected to one of three experimental conditions: demineralized, lipid-extracted, and both demineralized and lipid-extracted. Additionally, C:N ratios were evaluated as a proxy for collagen purity. Lastly, correlations were examined between control C:N ratios vs. historical age and control C:N ratios vs. sample characteristics.

RESULTS

No significant differences in the δ15N values were observed for any of the experimental protocols. However, the δ13C values were significantly increased by all three experimental protocols: demineralization, lipid extraction, and both treatments combined. The most influential protocol was both demineralization and lipid extraction. Measures of the C:N ratios were also significantly lowered by demineralization and both treatments combined, indicating the material was closer to pure collagen after the treatments. Collagen purity as indicated via C:N ratio was not correlated with historical age nor sample characteristics.

CONCLUSIONS

If only the δ15N values from killer whale bone are of interest for analysis, no pre-treatment seems necessary. If the δ13C values are of interest, samples should be both demineralized and lipid-extracted. As historical age and specimen characteristics are not correlated with sample contamination, all samples can be treated equally.

Optimizing extraction methods by a comprehensive experimental approach and characterizing polyphenol compositions of Ecklonia radiata

Brown seaweed Ecklonia radiata harbors valuable polyphenols, notably phlorotannins, prized for their health benefits. This study optimized phlorotannin extraction via conventional solvent extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction methods, utilizing variable concentrations of ethanol. Employing fractional factorial designs, key variables were identified. Steepest ascent/descent method and central composite rotatable designs refined optimal conditions, enhancing phlorotannin and polyphenol yields, and antioxidant capacities. Under optimized conditions, phlorotannin contents reached 2.366 ± 0.01 and 2.596 ± 0.04 PGE mg/g, total polyphenol contents peaked at 10.223 ± 0.03 and 10.836 ± 0.02 GAE mg/g. Robust antioxidant activity was observed: DPPH and OH radical scavenging capacities measured 27.891 ± 0.06 and 17.441 ± 0.08 TE mg/g, and 37.498 ± 1.12 and 49.391 ± 0.82 TE mg/g, respectively. Reducing power capacities surged to 9.016 ± 0.02 and 28.110 ± 0.10 TE mg/g. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses revealed enriched antioxidant compounds. Variations in polyphenol profiles were noted, potentially influencing antioxidant capacity nuances. This study illuminated the potential of E. radiata potential as a polyphenol source and offers optimized extraction methods poised to benefit various industries.

Pulsative venous return from the branchial vessels to the heart of the bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis supports the constant-volume mechanism

In bivalves and gastropods, ventricle contraction causes a negative pressure in the auricles and increases venous return from the afferent oblique vein (AOV): the constant-volume (CV) mechanism. The flow in the AOV should be a pulsative flow synchronized with the ventricular contraction. The flow in the heart and adjacent vessels of Mytilus galloprovincialis were measured by magnetic resonance imaging to confirm this hypothesis. Under a regular heartbeat, pulsative flows in the AOV and branchial vessels (BVs) were almost completely synchronized with the flow in the aorta, while filling of the ventricle was in the opposite phase. Flows in the BVs were directed to the posterior direction, and a pair of BVs in the gill axes (the efferent BVs) were connected to the AOV. Based on the images of the whole pathway of the AOV in an oblique slice, we confirmed that haemolymph flow was evoked from the efferent BVs and flow into the ventricle via the auricle was completed in a single heartbeat. Therefore, the walls of the AOV and BVs could resist negative transmural pressure caused by the ventricular contraction. In conclusion, the auricle, the AOV and the BVs, including the gill filaments, act as a suction pump. The pulsative venous return is driven by the negative pressure of the AOV as in the CV mechanism, and the negative pressure in the efferent BVs could draw haemolymph from the sinus via the gill and the afferent BVs. Therefore, Mytilus can start and stop its heartbeat as necessary.

Lipid biomarkers and stable isotopes uncover paleovegetation changes in extremely species-rich forest-steppe ecosystems, Central Europe

The historical development of the vegetation of semi-dry grasslands in Central Europe is not satisfactorily understood. Long-term continuity of open vegetation or, conversely, deep-past forest phases are considered possible sources of the current extreme species diversity of these ecosystems. We aimed to reveal the trajectory of paleovegetation development in these ecosystems through detailed analysis of terrestrial in-situ soil geoarchives. We measured the bulk soil carbon and nitrogen contents, lipid molecular distribution, and compound-specific stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic signatures of mid- and long-chain n-alkanes extracted from soil and modern plant material tissues (i.e., deciduous and Pinus leaves and grass/herbaceous species). The C23-C33 n-alkane homologues were identified in soils with different abundances. Normally, C27 and C29 n-alkanes were the most abundant homologues in tree-leaf samples, while grass-derived n-alkanes were mostly C31 and C33 homologues. Soils were largely dominated by C29 and C31 n-alkanes. Odd-numbered C27-C33 soil n-alkane δ13C values ranged from -36.2‰ to -23.2‰, whereas their δ2H values showed a wider range of variability that fluctuated from -224‰ to -172‰. Molecular distribution in combination with radiocarbon analysis of soil organic matter (SOM) and δ13C and δ2H values of n-alkanes revealed a large contribution of C3 trees (both deciduous and coniferous trees/pine trees) as the main source of n-alkanes between the late Pleistocene and early Holocene (ca 15,000-8200 calibrated year before present/cal year BP). A clear shift toward more grassy/herbaceous vegetation was observed from the early Holocene (ca 11,700-8200 cal year BP) onwards. Distribution patterns of lipids and soil geochemical parameters showed that plants are the main source of SOM and that biodegradation and kinetic isotope fractionation are not the main reasons for 13C enrichment in soil profiles. Past C3 vegetation shifts as well as paleoclimate changes (i.e., aridity) can have played a role in the observed 13C depth profiles.

Landscape structure affects temporal dynamics in the bumble bee virome: Landscape heterogeneity supports colony resilience

Virus spillovers from managed honey bees, Apis mellifera, are thought to contribute to the decline of wild pollinators, including bumble bees. However, data on the impact of such viruses on wild pollinators remain scarce, and the influence of landscape structure on virus dynamics is poorly understood. In this study, we deployed bumble bee colonies in an agricultural landscape and studied changes in the bumble bee virome during field placement under varying habitat composition and configuration using a multiscale analytical framework. We estimated prevalence of viruses and viral loads (i.e. number of viral genomic equivalent copies) in bumble bees before and after placing them in the field using next generation sequencing and quantitative PCR. The results show that viral loads and number of different viruses present increased during placement in the field and that the virus composition of the colonies shifted from an initial dominance of honey bee associated viruses to a higher number (in both viral loads and number of viruses present) of bumble bee associated viruses. Especially DWV-B, typical for honey bees, drastically decreased after the time in the field. Viral loads prior to placing colonies in the field showed no effect on colony development, suggesting low impacts of these viruses in field settings. Notably, we further demonstrate that increased habitat diversity results in a lower number of different viruses present in Bombus colonies, while colonies in areas with well-connected farmland patches decreased in their total viral load after field placement. Our results emphasize the importance of landscape heterogeneity and connectivity for wild pollinator health and that these influences predominate at fine spatial scales.

Reduction of large vessel traffic improves water quality and alters fish habitat-use throughout a large river

Rivers are increasingly used as superhighways for the continental-scale transportation of freight goods, but the ecological impact of large vessel traffic on river ecosystems is difficult to study. Recently, the temporary maintenance closure of lock and dam systems on the Illinois Waterway (USA) brought commercial vessel traffic to a halt along the river's length, offering a rare opportunity to study the response of the ecosystem before, during, and after an extended pause of this persistent anthropogenic disturbance. We observed improvements in main- and side-channel water quality and a redistribution of fish habitat-use during a months-long, near-complete reduction of large vessel traffic. Over 3600 water quality and 1300 fish community samples indicate that large vessel traffic reduction coincided with a 33 % reduction in turbidity as well as increased use of sampling strata near vessel navigation corridors by sound-sensitive and rheophilic fishes. Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), the most abundant species in the system, also expanded their use of these 'impact' areas. Though inland waterway transport is an economically- and climate-friendly alternative to trucking and rail for the shipment of freight, our data suggest that intense vessel traffic may have profound physical and biological impacts across a large river. Monitoring and mitigation of ecological impacts of the ongoing expansion of inland waterway transport around the world will be critical to balancing large rivers as both useful navigation corridors and functional ecosystems.

Large shallow lake response to anthropogenic stressors and climate change: Missing macroinvertebrate recovery after oligotrophication (Lake Balaton, East-Central Europe)

East-Central Europe's largest shallow lake, Balaton, experienced strong eutrophication in the 1970-80s, followed by water quality improvement and oligotrophication by 2010 CE. Recently however, repeated cyanobacterial blooms occurred and warned that internal P-recycling can act similarly to external P load, therefore we need a better understanding of past water level (WL) and trophic changes in the lake. In this study we discuss the last 500-yr trophic, WL and habitat changes of the lake using paleoecological (chironomids, pollen) and geochemical (sediment chlorophyll, TOC, TS, TN, C/H ratio, major and trace element) methods. We demonstrate that the most intensive and irreversible change in the macroinvertebrate fauna occurred during the period of economic boom between the First and Second World War (∼1925-1940 CE), when large-scale built-in and leisure use of the lake has intensified. At that time, the Procladius-Microchironomus-Stempellina dominated community transformed to Procladius-Chironomus plumosus-type-Microchironomus community that coincided with land use changes, intensified erosion and water-level regulation in the lake with the maintenance of year-round high WL. This was followed by the impoverishment and population size decrease of the chironomid fauna and Procladius dominance since 1940 CE, without any recovery after 1994 CE despite the ongoing oligotrophication. Accelerated rate of change and turnover of the fauna was connected to an increase in the benthivorous fish biomass and eutrophication. The basin lost almost completely its once characteristic Stempellina species between 1927 and 1940 CE due to trophic level increase and seasonal anoxia in the Szemes Basin. Reference conditions for ecosystem improvement were assigned to 1740-1900 CE. We conclude that in spite of the ongoing oligotrophication, the re-establishment of the Procladius-Microchironomus-Stempellina assemblage is hampered, and requires fish population regulation.

Coordination between degree of isohydricity and depth of root water uptake in temperate tree species

In an increasingly dry environment, it is crucial to understand how tree species use soil water and cope with drought. However, there is still a knowledge gap regarding the relationships between species-specific stomatal behaviour, spatial root distribution, and root water uptake (RWU) dynamics. Our study aimed to investigate above- and below-ground aspects of water use during soil drying periods in four temperate tree species that differ in stomatal behaviour: two isohydric tracheid-bearing conifers, Scots pine and Norway spruce, and two more anisohydric deciduous species, the diffuse-porous European beech, and the ring-porous Downy oak. From 2015 to 2020, soil-tree-atmosphere-continuum parameters were measured for each species in monospecific forests where trees had no access to groundwater. The hourly time series included data on air temperature, vapor pressure deficit, soil water potential, soil hydraulic conductivity, and RWU to a depth of 2 m. Analysis of drought responses included data on stem radius, leaf water potential, estimated osmotically active compounds, and drought damage. Our study reveals an inherent coordination between stomatal regulation, fine root distribution and water uptake. Compared to conifers, the more anisohydric water use of oak and beech was associated with less strict stomatal closure, greater investment in deep roots, four times higher maximum RWU, a shift of RWU to deeper soil layers as the topsoil dried, and a more pronounced soil drying below 1 m depth. Soil hydraulic conductivity started to limit RWU when values fell below 10-3 to 10-5 cm/d, depending on the soil. As drought progressed, oak and beech may also have benefited from their leaf osmoregulatory capacity, but at the cost of xylem embolism with around 50 % loss of hydraulic conductivity when soil water potential dropped below -1.25 MPa. Consideration of species-specific water use is crucial for forest management and vegetation modelling to improve forest resilience to drought.

Quantifying the resistance of mixed-forests against natural hazards in the Pyrenees

Mountain protection forests can prevent natural hazards by reducing their onset and propagation probabilities. In fact, individual trees act as natural barriers against hydrogeomorphic events. However, assessing the structural strength of trees against these hazards is challenging, especially in a context of climate change due to the intensification of extreme events and changes in forest dynamics. Here, we focus on the mechanical analyses of two of the most common tree species across the Pyrenees (Abies alba Mill. and Fagus sylvatica L.) growing in two different areas (Spain and France), and affected by recurrent snow avalanche and rockfall events. We first performed 53 pulling test on mature trees, where the root-plate stiffness and the modulus of elasticity of the stems were evaluated. To further analyse the impact of forest management and climate on protective forests, we yielded information on tree growth using dendroecology techniques. Then, we assessed structure and neighbourhood characteristics for each target tree to account for the surrounding forest structure. Finally, using linear and structured equation models we tested if the mechanical capacity of the trees is determined either by functional traits (e.g. species, tree growth, diameter and height) or forest structural traits (e.g. tree density, tree structure and slenderness) or both. Our results suggest that the forest neighbourhood influences tree mechanical capacity through two pathways, including both functional and structural traits. The individual stiffness parameter of trees is influenced by their functional traits, while their structural traits are more closely related with changes in the modulus of elasticity. Both species exhibit varying levels of dominance in different locations, which is related to their resilience to the diverse natural hazards they confront. Our findings provide relevant insights to anticipating management strategies for forests that serve as a protective barrier against natural hazards in the context of a changing climate.

Biodegradation of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate after soil inoculation with microbial consortium: Soil microbiome and plant responses to the changed environment

Biodegradable plastics play a vital role in addressing global plastics disposal challenges. Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) is a biodegradable bacterial intracellular storage polymer with substantial usage potential in agriculture. Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and its degradation products are non-toxic; however, previous studies suggest that P3HB biodegradation negatively affects plant growth because the microorganisms compete with plants for nutrients. One possible solution to this issue could be inoculating soil with a consortium of plant growth-promoting and N-fixing microorganisms. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a pot experiment using lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata L.) grown in soil amended with two doses (1 % and 5 % w/w) of P3HB and microbial inoculant (MI). We tested five experimental variations: P3HB 1 %, P3HB 1 % + MI, P3HB 5 %, P3HB 5 % + MI, and MI, to assess the impact of added microorganisms on plant growth and P3HB biodegradation. The efficient P3HB degradation, which was directly dependent on the amount of bioplastics added, was coupled with the preferential utilization of P3HB as a carbon (C) source. Due to the increased demand for nutrients in P3HB-amended soil by microbial degraders, respiration and enzyme activities were enhanced. This indicated an increased mineralisation of C as well as nitrogen (N), sulphur (S), and phosphorus (P). Microbial inoculation introduced specific bacterial taxa that further improved degradation efficiency and nutrient turnover (N, S, and P) in P3HB-amended soil. Notably, soil acidification related to P3HB was not the primary factor affecting plant growth inhibition. However, despite plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and N2-fixing microorganisms originating from MI, plant biomass yield remained limited, suggesting that these microorganisms were not entirely successful in mitigating the growth inhibition caused by P3HB.

Disentangling the effect of space, time, and environmental and anthropogenic drivers on coastal macrobenthic β diversity in contrasting habitats over 15 years

Coastal zones are biodiversity hotspots and deliver essential ecosystem functions and services, yet they are exposed to multiple and interacting anthropogenic and environmental constraints. The individual and cumulative effects of these constraints on benthic communities, a key component of coastal ecosystems, and their variability across space and time, remains to be thoroughly quantified to guide conservation actions. Here, we explored how the presence of biogenic habitats influences the response of benthic communities to natural and anthropogenic constraints. We investigated this effect in both intertidal and subtidal habitats exposed to different pressures. We used data collected in the North-East Atlantic over 15 years (2005-2019) as part of the REBENT monitoring program, covering 38 sites of bare sediments, intertidal seagrass beds and maerl beds. We collected a range of environmental variables and proxies of anthropogenic pressures and used variation and hierarchical partitioning with redundancy analyses to estimate their relative effect on macrobenthic communities. We used descriptors modeling spatial and temporal structures (dbMEMs) to explore the scale of their effects and potential missing predictors. The selected variables explained between 53 % and 64 % of macrobenthic β diversity depending on habitat and depth. Fishing pressures, sedimentary and hydrodynamics variables stood out as the most important predictors across all habitats while proxies of anthropogenic pressures were overall more important in intertidal habitats. In the intertidal, presence of biogenic habitat strongly modulated the amount of explained variance and the identity of the selected variable. Across both tidal levels, analysis of models' residuals further indicated that biogenic habitats might mitigate the effect of extreme environmental events. Our study provides a hierarchy of the most important drivers of benthic communities across different habitats and tidal levels, emphasizing the prominence of anthropogenic pressures on intertidal communities and the role of biogenic habitats in mitigating environmental changes.
