Abstract
Pharmacists are increasingly becoming the healthcare professional who interacts most regularly with patients who have diseases or disorders for which exercise is an effective and recommended treatment. With the relative scarcity of clinical exercise physiologists in the United States, pharmacists are expected to provide lifestyle advice to their patients, especially in community (i.e. retail) pharmacy settings, but student pharmacists typically receive no formal or informal training in exercise physiology and prescription. To address this deficit, an elective course was developed to provide student pharmacists with the knowledge and skill set that will enable them to apply evidence-based physical activity guidelines in the pharmacy. The course utilized the Exercise is Medicine resources for chronic diseases and disorders that are routinely encountered in community pharmacies, in addition to analysis of interactions between exercise and medications commonly prescribed for these conditions. After completion of the course, students reported being significantly more comfortable discussing physical activity with their patients compared to the start of the course (P < 0.001). Similarly, at the end of the course, 99% of students reported that they felt confident in their ability to apply evidence-based recommendations of common diseases and disorders to their patients. Postcourse student evaluations clearly demonstrated that student pharmacists viewed the course positively and as essential in their professional training. These data highlight the feasibility and efficacy of improving self-perceptions for the provision of physical activity recommendations via an elective course in physical activity prescription in a Doctor of Pharmacy program.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study describes a new elective course in physical activity prescription for Doctor of Pharmacy students. After completing the course, students reported improved self-perceptions for the provision of physical activity recommendations. This course fills a gap in pharmacy education and this study provides future directions to improve training in lifestyle modifications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the diagnostic performance of Milan system for reporting salivary gland cytopathology (MSRSGC) in two southern China tertiary cancer centers and investigate the impact of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) on FNAC performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five hundred and forty-nine patients who underwent FNAC for salivary lesions with surgical follow-up from two centers were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. All slides were recategorized using MSRSGC after consensus on diagnostic criteria for each category. The diagnostic performance of FNAC for salivary lesions was evaluated and compared and the impact of ROSE on FNAC performance was analyzed. RESULTS The distribution of cases per category based on the MSRSGC criteria in the whole series was as followed: ND 49 (8.9%), NN 76 (14.4%), BN 262 (47.7%), AUS 20 (3.6%), SUMP 43 (7.8%), SM 21 (3.8%), M 78 (14.2%). The SUMC series had significantly more ND distributions than JXCH did (16.2% vs. 0, p = .000). Risk of malignancy for each category in the total series was as followed: 42.9% for ND, 9.2% for NN, 3.8% for BN, 30.0% for AUS, 23.3% for SUMP, 81.0% for SM, and 94.9% for M. When ND and AUS/SUMP were excluded, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy were 84.0%, 97.1%, 89.9%, 95.1%, and 94.0%, respectively; sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy were comparable between the two centers. CONCLUSIONS FNAC using MSRSGC provides a good tool in preoperative evaluation for salivary lesions in southern China. ROSE improves its diagnostic performance by reducing the ratio of the ND category.

Abstract
Congenital malformations can affect almost 7% of canine newborns. The increase of commercial dog breeding and inbreeding used to maintain the striking characteristics of each breed, the appearance of malformations has become increasingly common, especially in brachycephalic dogs. The causes are diverse, and include genetic, nutritional, iatrogenic, and infectious factors, often making it difficult to establish a cause-consequence relationship. The high mortality associated with malformations comes not only from the fact that some are incompatible with life, but also because even if many undergo surgical treatment or correction, they require specific management, monitoring, and clinical treatment for an indefinite period of time. The most common malformations such as cleft lip and palate, hydrocephalus and anasarca have been studied for a long time, and it is currently known that brachycephalic dogs have a greater predisposition, however, for other less common conditions as gastroschisis and hypospadias, there is only a few case reports. The appearance of congenital defects in a litter leads to financial losses for the breeder, emotional losses for the owner and the veterinarian and harms the well-being of that individual. For this reason, the aim of this review article is to gather relevant information on the characteristics, diagnosis, and management of the main malformations in puppies. It is essential that the veterinarian is prepared to diagnose and treat these conditions, reducing negative impacts on animals and owners.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aluminum-based adjuvants (ABAs) enhance the immune response following vaccine injection. Their mechanisms of action are not fully understood, and their bio-persistency have been described associated with long-term adverse effects. METHODS We evaluated and compared the cellular effects of the two main ABAs and whole vaccines on ATP production, ROS generation and cytokines production (IL-6 and IL-10), using THP-1 cells. RESULTS ABAs altered the cell energy metabolism by increasing ROS production after 24 h and reducing ATP production after 48 h. In addition, both ABAs and whole vaccines induced different kinetics of IL-6 production, whereas only ABAs induced IL-10 secretion. CONCLUSION This study showed clearly, for a first time, a difference in cellular response to the ABAs and whole vaccines which should be taken into consideration in future studies focusing on the effect of ABA in vaccines. Future studies on ABAs should also pay attention to mitochondrial function alterations following exposure to ABA-containing vaccines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Al exists naturally in the environment and is an important component in acidic soils, which harm almost all plants. Furthermore, Al is widely used in food additives, cosmetics, and medicines, resulting in living organisms ingesting traces of Al orally or dermally every day. Accordingly, Al accumulates in the body, which can cause negative bioeffects and diseases, and this concern is gaining increasing attention. Therefore, to detect and track Al in the environment and in living organisms, the development of novel Al-selective probes that are water-soluble and exhibit fluorescence at long wavelengths is necessary. RESULTS In this study, an Al3+-selective fluorescent probe PSP based on a novel pyrone molecule was synthesized and characterized to detect and track Al in biological systems. PSP exhibited fluorescence enhancement at 580 nm in the presence of Al3+ in aqueous media. Binding analysis using Job's plot and structural analysis using 1H NMR showed that PSP formed a 1:1 complex with Al3+ at the two carbonyl groups of the dimethyl malonate of the pyrone ring. Upon testing in biological systems, PSP showed good cell membrane permeability, detected intracellular Al3+ in human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), and successfully imaged accumulated Al3+ in Microcystis aeruginosa and the larvae of Rheocricotopus species. SIGNIFICANCE The novel Al3+-selective fluorescent probe PSP is highly effective and is expected to aid in elucidating the role of Al3+ in the environment and living organisms.

Abstract
Aluminum is the third most common element on Earth´s crust and despite its wide use in our workaday life it has been associated with several health risks after overexposure. In the present study the impact of aluminum salts upon ABC transporter activity was studied in the P-GP-expressing human blood-brain barrier cell line hCMEC/D3, in MDCKII cells overexpressing BCRP and MRP2, respectively, and in freshly isolated, functionally intact kidney tubules from Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), which express the analog ABC transporters, P-gp, Bcrp and Mrp2. In contrast to previous findings with heavy metals salts (cadmium(II) chloride or mercury(II) chloride), which have a strong inhibitory effect on ABC transporter activity, or zinc(II) chloride and sodium arsenite, which have a stimulatory effect upon ABC transport function, the results indicate no modulatory effect of aluminum salts on the efflux activity of the human ABC transporters P-GP, BCRP and MRP2 nor on the analog transporters P-gp, Bcrp and Mrp2.

Abstract
Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe late complication of head and neck radiotherapy shown to have profound negative impact on the quality of life of cancer survivors. Over the past few decades, improvements in radiation delivery techniques have resulted in a decrease in the incidence of ORN. However, even with modern radiotherapy techniques, ORN remains an important clinical concern. In recent literature, there is a wide range of reported ORN rates from 0% to as high as 20%. With such a high level of variability in the reported incidence of ORN, oncologists often encounter difficulties estimating the risk of this serious radiotherapy toxicity. In this review, the authors present a summary of the factors that contribute to the high level of variability in the reported incidence of ORN, and highlight that the variable definition, variable grading, and heterogeneity of both study inclusion criteria and treatment parameters can each significantly influence the reporting of ORN rates. Given numerous factors can affect the reported incidence of ORN, a thorough understanding of the clinical context behind the reported ORN rates is needed to comprehend the true risk of this important radiotherapy toxicity.

Abstract
Coronary dominance describes the anatomic variation of coronary arterial supply, notably as it relates to perfusion of the inferior cardiac territories. Differences in the development and outcome in select disease states between coronary dominance patterns are increasingly recognized. In particular, observational studies have identified higher prevalence of poor outcomes in left coronary dominance in the setting of ischemic, conduction, and valvular disease. In this qualitative literature review, we summarize anatomic, physiologic, and clinical implications of differences in coronary dominance to highlight current understanding and gaps in the literature that should warrant further studies.

Abstract
This narrative review systematically explores the progression of materials and techniques in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). We commence by delineating the evolution from traditional ARP methods to cutting-edge alternatives, including platelet-rich fibrin, injectable bone repair materials, and hydrogel systems. Critical examination of various studies reveals these innovative approaches not only accelerate bone healing but also significantly improve patient-reported outcomes, such as satisfaction, pain perception, and overall quality of life. Emphasis is placed on the correlation between advanced ARP techniques and enhanced patient comfort and clinical efficacy, underscoring their transformative potential in dental implantology. Highlighting the effectiveness of ARP, the implant survival rate over a span of 5 to 7 years was high, showcasing the reliability and success of these methods. Further, patients expressed high aesthetic satisfaction with the soft tissue outcome, evidenced by an average visual analog scale (VAS) score of 94. This positive aesthetic appraisal is linked to the clinical health of implants, potentially due to the employment of tooth-supported surgical guides. The economic analysis reveals a varied cost range for bone graft substitutes ($46.2 to $140) and socket sealing materials ($12 to $189), with a noteworthy correlation between the investment in barrier membranes and the diminished horizontal and vertical ridge resorption. This suggests that membrane usage significantly contributes to preserving ridge dimensions, offering a cost-effective strategy for enhancing ARP outcomes. In conclusion, this review illuminates the significant advancements in ARP, highlighting the shift towards innovative materials and techniques that not only promise enhanced bone regeneration and reduced healing times but also improve patient satisfaction and aesthetic outcomes. The documented high implant survival rate and the beneficial economic implications of membrane use further validate the effectiveness of contemporary ARP strategies, paving the way for their broader adoption in dental implantology.

Abstract
A special microenvironment called the "pre-metastatic niche" is thought to help primary tumor cells migrate to new tissues and invade them, in part because the normal barrier function of the vascular endothelium is compromised. While the primary tumor itself can promote the creation of such niches by secreting pro-metastatic factors, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, we show that the injection of primary tumor-secreted pro-metastatic factors from B16F10 melanoma or 4T1 breast cancer cells into healthy mice can induce the destruction of the vascular endothelial glycocalyx, which is a polysaccharide coating on the vascular endothelial lumen that normally inhibits tumor cell passage into and out of the circulation. However, when human umbilical vein endothelial cultures were treated in vitro with these secreted pro-metastatic factors, no significant destruction of the glycocalyx was observed, implying that this destruction requires a complex in vivo microenvironment. The tissue section analysis revealed that secreted pro-metastatic factors could clearly upregulate macrophage-related molecules such as CD11b and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney, which is associated with the upregulation and activation of heparanase. In addition, macrophage depletion significantly attenuated the degradation of the vascular endothelial glycocalyx induced by secreted pro-metastatic factors. This indicates that the secreted pro-metastatic factors that destroy the vascular endothelial glycocalyx rely primarily on macrophages. Our findings suggest that the formation of pre-metastatic niches involves degradation of the vascular endothelial glycocalyx, which may hence be a useful target for developing therapies to inhibit cancer metastasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal artery variations are clinically significant due to their implications for surgical procedures and renal function. However, data on these variations in Sudanese populations are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of renal artery variations in a Sudanese population. METHODS A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in Khartoum state from October 2017 to October 2020. A total of 400 Sudanese participants who underwent abdominal CT scans were included. Data on demographic characteristics, kidney measurements, and renal vasculature were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 46.7 ± 18 years, with a nearly equal gender distribution. Overall, renal artery variations were present in 11% of participants, with accessory renal arteries observed in 6% of the study population. Among those with accessory vessels, 50% were on the right side, 29.2% on the left, and 20.8% bilateral, distributed across hilar 29.2%, lower polar 29.2%, and upper polar 41.7% regions. No significant associations were found between accessory renal arteries and age or gender (p-value > 0.05). However, participants with accessory renal arteries exhibited significantly narrower width 5.0 ± 1.4 than those with no with accessory renal arteries 5.8 ± 1.1 (p-value 0.002) Early dividing renal arteries were found in 5% of participants, with nearly half being bilateral. No significant associations were found between the presence of early dividing renal arteries and demographic or renal measurements (p-value > 0.05). CONCLUSION This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and characteristics of renal artery variations in a Sudanese population. The findings contribute to our understanding of renal anatomy in this demographic and can inform clinical practice and surgical planning, particularly in renal transplantation and other renal procedures.

Abstract
In cases of osseous defects, knowledge of the anatomy, and its age and sex-related variations, is essential for reconstruction of normal morphology. Here, we aimed at creating a 3D atlas of the human mandible in an adult sample using dense landmarking and geometric morphometrics. We segmented 50 male and 50 female mandibular surfaces from CBCT images (age range: 18.9-73.7 years). Nine fixed landmarks and 510 sliding semilandmarks were digitized on the mandibular surface, and then slid by minimizing bending energy against the average shape. Principal component analysis extracted the main patterns of shape variation. Sexes were compared with permutation tests and allometry was assessed by regressing on the log of the centroid size. Almost 49 percent of shape variation was described by the first three principal components. Shape variation was related to width, height and length proportions, variation of the angle between ramus and corpus, height of the coronoid process and inclination of the symphysis. Significant sex differences were detected, both in size and shape. Males were larger than females, had a higher ramus, more pronounced gonial angle, larger inter-gonial width, and more distinct antegonial notch. Accuracy of sexing based on the first two principal components in form space was 91 percent. The degree of edentulism was weakly related to mandibular shape. Age effects were not significant. The resulting atlas provides a dense description of mandibular form that can be used clinically as a guide for planning surgical reconstruction.

Abstract
Objective: To compare clinical outcomes of superior versus inferior splenic artery embolization in partial splenic embolization (PSE) and identify predictors of major complications. Material and methods: This retrospective case-control study included 73 patients who underwent PSE between May 2005 and April 2021. They were divided into two groups: the superior and middle splenic artery embolization group (Group A, n = 37) and the inferior and middle splenic artery embolization group (Group B, n = 36). Outcome differences and major complications between the groups were assessed. Logistic regression was used to analyze potential predictors of major complications, and the optimal cutoff value for splenic embolization rates was determined using the Youden index. Results: There were no significant differences in laboratory and radiological outcomes between the two groups. Group A had a significantly lower incidence of major complications than Group B (p = 0.049), a lower Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score for pain (p = 0.036), and a shorter hospital stay (p = 0.022). Independent risk factors for major complications included inferior and middle splenic artery embolization (odds ratio [OR] = 3.672; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.028-13.120; p = 0.045) and a higher spleen embolization rate (OR = 1.108; 95% CI = 1.003-1.224; p = 0.044). The optimal cutoff for spleen embolization rate to predict major complications was 59.93% (sensitivity 77.8%, specificity 63.6%). Conclusion: Using 500-700 µm microspheres for PSE, targeting the middle and superior splenic artery yields similar effects to targeting the middle and inferior artery, but results in lower rates of major complications and shorter hospital stays. To effectively minimize the risk of major complications, the embolization rate should be kept below 59.93%, regardless of the target vessel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To elucidate the branchial origin of the articular and the square (homology of the malleus and the incus of mammals), we used immunohistochemistry to analyse the expression of the Hox-A2 protein during cephalogenesis in chickens. MATERIALS AND METHODS Immunohistochemistry on paraffin sections of embryos from stage HH16 to HH40. RESULTS In addition to the columella (equivalent to the mammalian stapes), the joint between the articular and the quadrate bones, and the retro-articular process of the articular (homologous to the short process of the malleus) express Hox-A2, suggesting an intervention of the 2nd arch in their formation. However, we fortuitously observed very intense expression within the early muscle plate of the second arch, which then generalized to all cephalic muscles, and extended to the trunk's myotomes. In the cartilage, the presence of the protein disappeared at stage 35. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The present results, while confirming the contribution of the second arch to the development of avian equivalents of the mammalian ear ossicles, strongly suggest that the Hox-A2 gene plays a role in muscle development, which remains to be elucidated by more sophisticated techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of human bodies for anatomy education and research forms an integral part of the training of health professionals around the world. However, the ethical acquisition of human remains for this purpose has been a challenge in many countries, particularly for those on the African continent. South African institutions have however, been able to progressively transition to a more ethical approach to human body acquisition. The aim of the current study was to investigate the provenance of human bodies and the number used in South African health sciences institutions during the period 2017-2021. METHODS an online self-administered anonymised questionnaire was circulated to all health sciences institutions in South Africa. Questions were focused on establishing the provenance and the associated number of bodies and body donor programmes. RESULTS responses were received from thirteen of the fourteen South African institutions. All thirteen institutions use human bodies for teaching and research, with the majority of the institutions being reliant on bequests (77%) and family donations (62%), and less on unclaimed remains (46%). Most institutions have established body donor programmes. Four institutions were negatively affected by the effects of the pandemic. Memorial services, which continued during the pandemic, were conducted by eight of the thirteen institutions. CONCLUSION South Africa is leading the transition to the ethical acquisition of human remains on the African continent. It is hoped that South African institutions will soon transform to the exclusive sourcing of bodies through willed donation and provide guidance and support for the other countries on the continent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a versatile technique employed not only to correct pre-implant alveolar bone defects but also to facilitate bone defect correction during simultaneous implant placement. The effectiveness of GBR varies significantly among different protocols, as reported in the literature. This study specifically aimed to radiologically evaluate the horizontal bone gain obtained using a GBR procedure combining a particulate allograft, platelet-rich fibrin, resorbable collagen membrane, and screw tents. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 42 patients with an insufficient alveolar bone width for dental implant placement were treated with a GBR technique using a mixture of particulate allograft (demineralised freeze-dried bone allograft 300-500 and 500-1000 µm), advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF), resorbable collagen membranes and screws tents (1.2 mm in diameter). Over the course of the study, a total of 63 GBR procedures were performed on these patients. Bone gains were measured by cone-beam computed tomography at 9.1 ± 2.0 months post-operative. RESULTS A significant mean increase (P < 0.001) of 3.2 ± 0.9 mm at the sites of the greatest bone defect was observed. This improvement was consistent across various locations, including both maxillary and mandibular regions, and in cases of terminal and embedded edentulism, without any post-operative complications during the entire post-operative follow-up. All patients benefited from implant placement following the bone augmentation protocol. CONCLUSION GBR combining particulate allografts, A-PRF, collagen membranes, and screw tents achieves reliable, predictable, and reproducible clinical gains that allow for future implant placement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that occurs at higher rates in young women. Evidence suggests that SLE may be associated with ovarian dysfunction. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the possible effects of SLE on ovarian reserve function. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched from inception to July 2023 to identify studies that compared ovarian reserve in patients with SLE to that of healthy individuals. The study examined anti-müllerian hormone (AMH), antral follicle count (AFC), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as outcomes. RESULTS Thirteen studies (n=1017) were eligible for meta-analysis. Females with SLE had significantly lower levels of AMH (weighted mean difference [WMD]: -1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.37 to -0.76, P<0.001) and AFC (WMD: -3.46, 95% CI: -4.57 to -2.34, P<0.001). There was no significant difference in FSH levels. Subgroup analyses by age of onset revealed that SLE patients with adult-onset had significantly lower AMH levels (WMD: -1.44, 95% CI: -1.71 to -1.18, P<0.001), lower AFCs (WMD: -3.11, 95% CI: -3.60 to -2.61, P<0.001) and higher FSH levels (WMD: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.15 to 1.05, P<0.01). However, SLE patients with juvenile-onset did not exhibit significant differences in their AMH and FSH levels, except for AFCs (WMD: -7.27, 95% CI: -12.39 to -2.14, P<0.01). CONCLUSION The impact of SLE on ovarian reserve is significant, and the effect may be particularly severe in cases of adult-onset SLE.

Abstract
Exploring student motivation to learn is a research area that has rapidly expanded over the past decade, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to influence education. In the field of anatomy, most research about motivation to learn targets medical and other health professional students, but little is known about factors that drive students enrolled in science degrees. The aims of this mixed-methods study were to determine: (1) what motivates undergraduate university science students to learn anatomy, and whether motivation differs between cohorts (second- and third-year) and gender; and (2) the impact of COVID-19 on motivation to learn. Students (n = 171) completed a survey (the Science Motivation Questionnaire II [SMQII] and questions about learning experiences during the pandemic) and a subset (n = 12) participated in focus groups/interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using a combination of parametric and non-parametric statistics, and a general inductive approach was applied to qualitative data. Grade, intrinsic, and career factors were consistently identified as the key components of motivation. No statistically significant differences were found for motivation components between level of study or gender. Students reported that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted motivational components, but it had also fast-tracked the development of online learning, with both positive and negative connotations. Students value traditional in-person lectures but support a blended approach of traditional and online teaching methods for learning anatomy. Educators should utilize these findings when considering how to teach and support science students in ways that embrace motivational components to foster success in those studying anatomy.

Abstract
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, anatomy education was forced to adopt online modes of delivery. Previous research on student views revealed areas of strong preference (asynchronous lectures) and strong dislike (virtual specimens) in online anatomy courses. The current study seeks to compare the views of a single cohort of students experiencing both online and in-person undergraduate introductory anatomy and physiology courses. This comparison can highlight what students consider beneficial to their education and can inform future hybrid course offerings. Q-methodology was used to assess the opinions of students. Students sorted 41 statements on anatomy education in a quasi-normally distributed grid based on their degree of agreement with the statements. The rankings underwent a by-person factor analysis which categorized students with shared perceptions into groups. Data were collected from 246 students in the primarily online fall semester and 191 students in the primarily in-person winter semester. Analysis revealed three distinct factors (groups) in the cohort. Factor one (n = 113 (fall), n = 93 (winter)), was satisfied overall with the course materials and delivery. Factor two (n = 52 (fall), n = 18 (winter)) had a deep dislike of online learning, and factor three (n = 37 (fall), n = 49 (winter)) had a strong preference for online learning. While many students were comfortable in both online and in-person learning environments, this was not the case for all learners. The strengths and weaknesses of each teaching modality suggest the opportunity to explore hybrid learning as an option for future course offerings and specifically highlight valuable aspects to incorporate from each environment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ossification disorders can affect the stylohyoid ligament as well the stylomandibular ligament. The symptomathology between those syndromes and other pathologies it has been a problem because there is not a guideline. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION With the aim to establish prevalence, diagnosis and etiopathogenesis of Eagle and Ernest syndromes, a scoping review was performed base on PRISMA criteria. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS To review stylohyoid ligament and Eagle Syndrome 93 articles were selected. Three articles regarding the stylomandibular ligament and Ernest Syndrome were founded and selected. CONCLUSIONS Both syndromes should be clinically diagnosed and corroborate with imaging (2D or 3D), although imaging in Ernest Syndrome is not clear as well in Eagle Syndrome. A decisional algorithm for diagnosis of Eagle Syndrome and Ernest Syndrome is presented.

Abstract
In finite element analysis bone is often treated as two-layered material that has a discontinuity between the cortical and cancellous bone, which leads to a singularity and incorrect stresses. The goal of this study was to eliminate this singularity and to create a more realistic representation of bone which also considers the transition zone between cortical and cancellous bone as observed in natural bone. This was achieved by modelling bone as a graded material and inserting node-specific values for Young's modulus in the finite element simulation, whereas the transition zone thickness was derived from a CT scan. The modelling was performed semi-automatically, and the maximum principal stresses of the new approach were compared to those of a conventional approach. The new approach was found to effectively avoid singularities and provides more accurate predictions of stress in areas of the bone transition zone. As the approach is automatable and causes rather small overhead it is recommended for use in future work, when the problem at hand requires evaluating stresses close to the former singularity.

Abstract
Trabecular bone structure is a complex microstructure consisting of rods and plates, which poses challenges for its mechanical characterization. Digital image correlation (DIC) offers the possibility to characterize the strain response on the surface of trabecular bone. This study employed DIC equipped with a telecentric lens to investigate the strain state of individual trabeculae within their trabecular structure by assessing the longitudinal strain of the trabeculae at both the middle and near the edges of the trabeculae. Due to the high-resolution of the used DIC system, local surface strain of trabeculae was analyzed too. Lastly, the correlation between longitudinal trabecular strain and the orientation and slenderness of the trabeculae was investigated. The results showed that the strain magnification close to the edge of the trabeculae was higher and reached up to 8-folds the strain along the middle of the trabeculae. On the contrary, no strain magnification was found for most of the trabeculae between the longitudinal trabecular strain along the middle of the trabeculae and the globally applied strain. High-resolution full-field strain maps were obtained on the surface of trabeculae showing heterogeneous strain distribution with increasing load. No significant correlation was found between longitudinal trabecular strain and its orientation or slenderness. These findings and the applied methodology can be used to broaden our understanding of the deformation mechanisms of trabeculae within the trabecular network.

Abstract
Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is a non-invasive state-of-the-art-method for longitudinal tracking of tumor cells in mice. The technique is commonly used to determine bone metastatic burden in vivo and also suitable ex vivo to detect even smallest bone micro-metastases in spontaneous metastasis xenograft models. However, it is unclear to which extent ex vivo BLI correlates with alternative methods for metastasis quantification. Here, we compared ex vivo BLI, human DNA-based Alu-qPCR, and histology for the quantification of bone vs. lung metastases, which are amongst the most common sites of metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients and spontaneous PCa xenograft models. Data from 93 immunodeficient mice were considered, each of which were subcutaneously injected with luciferase/RGB-labeled human PCa PC-3 cells. The primary tumors were resected at ~ 0.75 cm³ and mice were sacrificed ~ 3 weeks after surgery and immediately examined by ex vivo BLI. Afterwards, the right lungs and hind limbs with the higher BLI signal (BLIHi bone) were processed for histology, whereas the left lung lobes and hind limbs with the lower BLI signal (BLILo bone) were prepared for Alu-qPCR. Our data demonstrate remarkable differences in the correlation coefficients of the different methods for lung metastasis detection (r ~ 0.8) vs. bone metastasis detection (r ~ 0.4). However, the BLI values of the BLIHi and BLILo bones correlated very strongly (r ~ 0.9), indicating that the method per se was reliable under identical limitations; the overall level of metastasis to contralateral bones was astonishingly similar. Instead, the level of lung metastasis only weakly to moderately correlated with the level of bone metastasis formation. Summarized, we observed a considerable discrepancy between ex vivo BLI and histology/Alu-qPCR in the quantification of bone metastases, which was not observed in the case of lung metastases. Future studies using ex vivo BLI for bone metastasis quantification should combine multiple methods to accurately determine metastatic load in bone samples.

Abstract
The term "fracture" pertains to the occurrence of bones being either fully or partially disrupted as a result of external forces. Prolonged fracture healing can present a notable danger to the patient's general health and overall quality of life. The significance of osteoblasts in the process of new bone formation is widely recognized, and optimizing their function could be a desirable strategy. Therefore, the mending of bone fractures is intricately linked to the processes of osteogenic differentiation and mineralization. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are RNA molecules that do not encode for proteins, but rather modulate the functioning of physiological processes by directly targeting proteins. The participation of microRNAs (miRNAs) in experimental investigations has been extensive, and their control functions have earned them the recognition as primary regulators of the human genome. Earlier studies have shown that modulating the expression of miRNAs, either by increasing or decreasing their levels, can initiate the differentiation of osteoblasts. This implies that miRNAs play a pivotal function in promoting osteogenesis, facilitating bone mineralization and formation, ultimately leading to an efficient healing of fractures. Hence, focusing on miRNAs can be considered a propitious therapeutic approach to accelerate the healing of fractures and forestall nonunion. In this manner, the information supplied by this investigation has the potential to aid in upcoming clinical utilization, including its possible use as biomarkers or as resources for devising innovative therapeutic tactics aimed at promoting fracture healing.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis comparing the short-term and long-term outcomes in laparoscopic groin hernia repair with or without preservation of the uterine round ligament (URL) in females. METHODS We searched several databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and and CNKI databases. This meta-analysis included randomized clinical trials, and retrospective comparative studies regarding preservation or division of the URL in laparoscopic groin hernia repair in females. Outcomes of interest were age, BMI, type of hernia, type of surgery, operating time, estimated blood loss, time of hospitalization, seroma, concomitant injury, mesh infection, recurrence, uterine prolapse, foreign body sensation, chronic pain, and pregnancy. Meta-analyses and trial sequential analysis were performed with Review Manager v5.3 and TSA software, respectively. RESULTS Of 192 potentially eligible articles, 9 studies with 1104 participants met the eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. There were no significant difference in age (MD-6.58, 95% CI - 13.41 to 0.24; P = 0.06), BMI (MD 0.05, 95%CI - 0.31 to 0.40; P = 0.81), blood loss (MD-0.04, 95% CI - 0.75 to 0.66; P = 0.90), time of hospitalization (MD-0.22, 95% CI-1.13 to 0.69; P = 0.64), seroma (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.41 to 1.24; P = 0.23), concomitant injury (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.01 to 8.24; P = 0.68), mesh infection (OR 0.13, 95% CI 0.01 to 2.61; P = 0.18), recurrence (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.18 to 7.25; P = 0.90), uterine prolapse(OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.07 to 6.94; P = 0.77), foreign body sensation (OR 1.95, 95% CI 0.53 to 7.23; P = 0.32) and chronic pain(OR 1.03 95% CI 0.4 to 2.69; P = 0.95). However, this meta-analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference in operating time (MD 6.62, 95% CI 2.20 to 11.04; P = 0.0003) between the preservation group and division group. Trial sequential analysis showed that the cumulative Z value of the operating time crossed the traditional boundary value and the TSA boundary value in the third study, and the cumulative sample size had reached the required information size (RIS), indicating that the current conclusion was stable. CONCLUSION In summary, laparoscopic groin hernia repair in women with the preservation of the round uterine ligament requires a longer operating time, but there was no advantage in short-term or long-term complications, and there was no clear evidence on whether it causes infertility and uterine prolapse.

Abstract
The article reviews the anatomical path of the phrenic nerve and its anastomoses, with the most up-to-date knowledge reported in the literature. We have briefly reviewed the possible phrenic dysfunctions, with the final aim of presenting an osteopathic manual approach for the treatment of the most superficial portion of the nerve, using a gentle technique. The approach we propose is, therefore, a theory based on clinical experience and the rationale that we can extrapolate from the literature. We hope that the article will be a stimulus for further experimental investigations using the technique illustrated in the article. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first article that takes into consideration the hypothesis of an osteopathic treatment with gentle techniques for the phrenic nerve.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sickle cell patients presented with progressive hip pain and limitation of daily activities, as evidenced by low preoperative hip scores and failed conservative therapy. Management of femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN) using total hip replacement (THR) in sickle cell disease (SCD) is widespread in developed countries, but it is still in its initiation stage in developing countries. The outcome of using cementless THR among SCD patients is still unknown with lack of published studies from regional countries. This study aimed to evaluate the outcome of using cementless primary THR among patients with sickle cell disease with end-stage hip avascular necrosis in Yemen. METHODS Thirty cementless primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were performed for AVN of the femoral head in 27 sickle cell patients, at Al.-Thawra Modern General Hospital-Sana'a, Yemen, from January 2018 to December 2022. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 27 ± five years (ranged 18-37 years) with a male to female ratio was 3:1. Steinberg staging for hip AVN was stage IV, one patient (3%); stage VI, thirteen patients (45%); and stage V, sixteen patients (51%). THR was on right side 14 (52%), left side 10 (37%), and bilateral 3 (11%). The implant used was ceramic on polyethylene acetabular liner. All patients showed improvement in Harris hip score from preoperative mean hip score was 25 ± 8 points to postoperative mean hip score was 88 ± 6 points at the last follow-up. Mean of the length of stay in hospital was 12.7 ± eight days (ranged from 4 to 32 days); the mean operating time was 107 ± 23 min. Three cases had superficial wound infection; four patients had five intraoperative fractures; two cases had pulmonary complications; one case had abdominal crisis. All patients had postoperative leg length discrepancy less than 2 cm. None had deep infection, nerve injury, wound hematoma, aseptic loosing, dislocation, DVT, heterotopic ossification, or death. CONCLUSION THR in SCD has a good outcome using cementless THA with a low rate of complication in Yemen, a developing country.

Abstract
The management of human fetal and embryological collections presents an ethical challenge that can be explored from different perspectives, particularly when considering informed consent. The "micro ethics" level focuses on parties engaged in giving and receiving human tissue while the "macro ethics" level focusses on the collective responsibility of the discipline and society. Additionally, adopting a framework, where ways of working are designed with relevant communities, requires understanding the perspectives of individuals, communities, and organizations. The aim of this study therefore was to assess the perceptions of education-focused Australian stakeholders. A survey collected the perspectives of 198 participants. The majority of participants (61.6%; n = 122/198) indicated that human fetal and embryological remains obtained prior to era of informed consent should be retained for use in education/research. It is likely that their perspective is based on the notion that if human fetal and embryological collections are used for good, then disposing of them would deny this benefit. Women (p < 0.001) indicated a preference for obtaining fetuses and embryos with informed consent for education and research (38.4%; n = 76/198). Majority were in favor of recording both maternal (MI) (59.6%; n = 118/198) and paternal information (PI) (58.1%; n = 115/198) with each donation. Majority (56.1%; n = 111/198) expressed that donations should be accepted from both parental sources. Consideration of stakeholder perspectives is important in developing guidelines regarding these collections. The results from this study demonstrate a level of discomfort with respect to collections without informed consent, which should be considered at the macro ethical and micro ethical level.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Gastrointestinal bleeding scintigraphy is a noninvasive study used to determine the presence of active bleeding, localize the bleeding site, and estimate the bleeding volume for prognostic purposes in patients with suspected gastrointestinal bleeding. However, it is important to note that false-positive results can occur due to various reasons. In this case, we present the scenario of a middle-aged woman who exhibited symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding and underwent 99mTc-RBC scintigraphy. The imaging revealed an accumulation of radiotracer in the hypogastric region, which was later determined to be caused by an omental hernia on SPECT/CT images. The herniated structure caused congestion in the mesenteric vessels, leading to the accumulation of 99mTc-RBC. This case highlights the significance of considering anatomical anomalies and nonbleeding pathologies when interpreting the 99mTc-RBC scintigraphy results for gastrointestinal bleeding.

Abstract
Liposomal carrier systems have emerged as a promising technology for pulmonary drug delivery. This study focuses on two selected liposomal systems, namely, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine stabilized by phosphatidic acid and cholesterol (DPPC-PA-Chol) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine stabilized by polyethylene glycol and cholesterol (DPPC-PEG-Chol). First, the research investigates the stability of these liposomal systems during the atomization process using different kinds of nebulizers (air-jet, vibrating mesh, and ultrasonic). The study further explores the aerodynamic particle size distribution of the aerosol generated by the nebulizers. The nebulizer that demonstrated optimal stability and particle size was selected for more detailed investigation, including Andersen cascade impactor measurements, an assessment of the influence of flow rate and breathing profiles on aerosol particle size, and an in vitro deposition study on a realistic replica of the upper airways. The most suitable combination of a nebulizer and liposomal system was DPPC-PA-Chol nebulized by a Pari LC Sprint Star in terms of stability and particle size. The influence of the inspiration flow rate on the particle size was not very strong but was not negligible either (decrease of Dv50 by 1.34 μm with the flow rate increase from 8 to 60 L/min). A similar effect was observed for realistic transient inhalation. According to the in vitro deposition measurement, approximately 90% and 70% of the aerosol penetrated downstream of the trachea using the stationary flow rate and the realistic breathing profile, respectively. These data provide an image of the potential applicability of liposomal carrier systems for nebulizer therapy. Regional lung drug deposition is patient-specific; therefore, deposition results might vary for different airway geometries. However, deposition measurement with realistic boundary conditions (airway geometry, breathing profile) brings a more realistic image of the drug delivery by the selected technology. Our results show how much data from cascade impactor testing or estimates from the fine fraction concept differ from those of a more realistic case.

Abstract
The purpose of this review was to (1) analyze the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (iVR) and augmented reality (AR) as teaching/learning resources (collectively called XR-technologies) for gaining anatomy knowledge compared to traditional approaches and (2) gauge students' perceptions of the usefulness of these technologies as learning tools. This meta-analysis, previously registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023423017), followed PRISMA guidelines. A systematic bibliographical search, without time parameters, was conducted through four databases until June 2023. A meta-analytic approach investigated knowledge gains and XR's usefulness for learning. Pooled effect sizes were estimated using Cohen's standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). A single-group proportional meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the percentage of students who considered XR devices useful for their learning. Twenty-seven experimental studies, reporting data from 2199 health sciences students, were included for analysis. XR-technologies yielded higher knowledge gains than traditional approaches (SMD = 0.40; 95% CI = 0.22 to 0.60), especially when used as supplemental/complementary learning resources (SMD = 0.52; 95% CI = 0.40 to 0.63). Specifically, knowledge performance using XR devices outperformed textbooks and atlases (SMD = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.10 to 0.54) and didactic lectures (SMD = 1.00; 95% CI = 0.57 to 1.42), especially among undergraduate students (SMD = 0.41; 95% CI = 0.20 to 0.62). XR devices were perceived to be more useful for learning than traditional approaches (SMD = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.04 to 1), and 80% of all students who used XR devices reported these devices as useful for learning anatomy. Learners using XR technologies demonstrated increased anatomy knowledge gains and considered these technologies useful for learning anatomy.

Abstract
Mayaro virus (MAYV), the etiological agent of Mayaro fever (MAYF), is an emergent arbovirus pathogen belonging to Togaviridae family. MAYF is characterized by high inflammatory component that can cause long-lasting arthralgia that persists for months. Macrophages are viral targets and reservoirs, key components of innate immunity and host response. Given the importance of this pathogen, our aim was to determine the inflammatory and antiviral response of human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) infected with MAYV. First, we established the replication kinetics of the virus. Thereafter, we determined the expression of pattern recognition receptors, NF-ĸB complex, interferons (IFNs), two interleukin 27 (IL27) subunits, IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), and the production of cytokines/chemokines. We found that human MDMs are susceptible to MAYV infection in vitro, with a peak of viral particles released between 24- and 48-hours post-infection (h.p.i) at MOI 0.5, and between 12 and 24 h.p.i at MOI 1. Interestingly, we observed a significant decline in the production of infectious viral particles at 72 h.p.i that was associated with the induction of antiviral response and high cytotoxic effect of MAYV infection in MDMs. We observed modulation of several genes after MAYV infection, as well, we noted the activation of antiviral detection and response pathways (Toll-like receptors, RIG-I/MDA5, and PKR) at 48 h.p.i but not at 6 h.p.i. Furthermore, MAYV-infected macrophages express high levels of the three types of IFNs and the two IL27 subunits at 48 h.p.i. Moreover, we found higher production of IL6, IL1β, CXCL8/IL8, CCL2, and CCL5 at 48 h.p.i as compared to 6 h.p.i. A robust antiviral response (ISG15, APOBEC3A, IFITM1, and MX2) was observed at 48 but not at 6 h.p.i. The innate and antiviral responses of MAYV-infected MDMs differ at 6 and 48 h.p.i. We conclude that MAYV infection induces robust pro-inflammatory and antiviral responses in human primary macrophages.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The uses of on-demand, interactive tablet-based surgical training environments are of interest as potential resources for both the acquisition and maintenance of rarely performed, critical procedures for expeditionary surgical care. This study examined the effectiveness of a tablet-based augmented reality (AR) procedural training environment for lower leg fasciotomy with a cohort of novice surgical trainees in (1) procedural knowledge, (2) tablet-based procedural skills, (3) tablet-based procedural time, and (4) procedural performance on a cadaver. We hypothesized that engaging with the AR procedural training would increase procedural knowledge and tablet-based skills and procedural time. We hypothesized that the tablet-based AR training environment would be insufficient to acquire the ability to perform lower leg fasciotomy on a cadaver. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was approved as exempt by the Institutional Review Board at USU. Surgical interns, sub-interns, and independent duty corpsman (n = 30) with no prior lower leg fasciotomy experience voluntarily participated. Tablet-based training activities included pre-training assessment, engagement with instruction, interactive procedural practice, and post-training assessment. Tablet-based knowledge assessment included 17 multiple choice questions covering concepts, reasoning, and judgment associated with the procedure. Tablet-based procedural completion and time were assessed within the training environment. Within 1 week of completing the tablet activities, participants were assessed by fellowship-trained trauma surgeons while performing cadaver-based lower leg fasciotomy. Statistical analysis included paired t-tests and effect size (Cohen's d). Statistical significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Tablet-based AR procedural training significantly improved procedural knowledge (P < .001), tablet-based procedural skills (P < .001), and reduced tablet-based procedural time (P < .002). Effect sizes were very large for tablet-based procedural knowledge (d = 1.75) and skills (d = 3.2) and small (d = 0.42) for procedural time. There were no significant effects of procedural knowledge, tablet-based procedural skills, or time on cadaver-based performance. No participant was able to accurately and independently complete lower leg fasciotomy procedure on a cadaver. CONCLUSIONS Tablet-based AR procedural training improved procedural knowledge and tablet-based skills; however, those gains did not transfer to the ability to perform the procedure on a cadaver. The tablet's limited AR interface did not support the acquisition of requisite surgical technique, tissue handling, and decision-making in novice surgical trainees. Experienced surgeons may have different outcomes because their mature understanding of surgical constructs would allow extrapolation of abilities to other procedural contexts. Further investigation of the tablet-based training environments for surgical care is necessary before distributing such resources to support clinical readiness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of pomegranate juice (PJ) and its components on uterine smooth muscle are unknown. Hence, this study unequivocally demonstrates that pomegranate juice (PJ) significantly impacts myometrial function, providing crucial insights into its relaxant properties and their potential therapeutic applications for uterine-related disorders. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Rat uterine smooth muscle horn strips were suspended in Krebs solution organ baths. Contractions were measured isometrically using a transducer (AD instrument Australia). The effects of PJ were evaluated on contractile activity elicited by potassium chloride (KCl 60 Mm) depolarization. Inhibitors of nitric oxide (L-NAME 3 X 10-4), guanylate cyclase (methylene blue 1 X 10-5), and Prostaglandin I2 (indomethacin 3 X 10-5), as well as Potassium Channels blockers, were determined. RESULTS The juice at concentrations from 1.5-5 mg/ml significantly decreased the rat uterine horn contraction induced by KCl. The NO, cGMP, and PGI2 inhibitors did not block the relaxation response. Furthermore, the PGI2 inhibitor significantly enhanced the relaxation effects; K+ channel blockers had no inhibitory effects on the relaxation responses. Contrarily, GLIB improved considerably relaxation. CONCLUSION Research suggests pomegranate juice's active ingredient may reduce uterine contractions and treat uterotonic disorders, potentially preventing preterm birth and dysmenorrhea. Further research is needed to determine its mechanism of action. TRIAL REGISTRATION Code: AEC-013.

Abstract
The nervous system is distinctive as compared to other tissue systems in human body owing to intricate structural organization. Histological studies played a key role in unveiling complex details of nervous tissue. However, the process of developing suitable staining method for nerve cells was arduous and spanned across almost half a century. The present study explored details of the journey involving quest for propitious staining method in neuroanatomy culminating in promulgation of neuron doctrine at the onset of 20th century. Initial efforts involving hematoxylin (including its diverse modifications) and subsequent adoption of analogous dye-based stains (like Nissl's method) had limited success in visualization of different parts of a nerve cell and structural details of nervous tissue. This was due to inability of dye-based stains to penetrate the connective tissue sheath of nervous tissue. Eventually, advent of metallic stains in form of silver impregnation method (Golgi stain), reduced silver impregnation method with gold stain (Cajal's stain) and silver carbonate staining method of Río-Hortega unraveled the structure of nervous tissue. The evolution of staining methods catalyzed the refinement of theories pertinent to constitution of nervous tissue. Golgi's staining led to emergence of reticular theory (neurons exist as a network) and Nissl's staining was the basis of the concept of Nervösen Grau (nerve cells and glial cells are embedded in mass of gray matter). Finally, Cajal's staining method successfully elucidated the complex anatomy of nerve terminals and resulted in emanation of neuron doctrine (neurons exists as individual units with adjacent connections).

Abstract
Poor bone growth remains a challenge for degradable bone implants. Montmorillonite and strontium were selected as the carrier and bone growth promoting elements to prepare strontium-doped montmorillonite coating on Mg-Ca alloy. The surface morphology and composition were characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS, FT-IR and XRD. The hydrogen evolution experiment and electrochemical test results showed that the Mg-Ca alloy coated with Sr-MMT coating possessed optimal corrosion resistance performance. Furthermore, in vitro studies on cell activity, ALP activity, and cell morphology confirmed that Sr-MMT coating had satisfactory biocompatibility, which can significantly avail the proliferation, differentiation, and adhesion of osteoblasts. Moreover, the results of the 90-day implantation experiment in rats indicated that, the preparation of Sr-MMT coating effectively advanced the biocompatibility and bone repair performance of Mg-Ca alloy. In addition, The Osteogenic ability of Sr-MMT coating may be due to the combined effect of the precipitation of Si4+ and Sr2+ in Sr-MMT coating and the dissolution of Mg2+ and Ca2+ during the degradation of Mg-Ca alloy. By using coating technology, this study provides a late-model strategy for biodegradable Mg alloys with good corrosion resistance, biocompatibility. This new material will bring more possibilities in bone repair.

Abstract
Bone is a common site of metastasis for lung cancer. The "seed and soil" hypothesis suggests that the bone marrow microenvironment ("soil") may provide a conducive survival environment for metastasizing tumor cells ("seeds"). The bone marrow microenvironment, comprising a complex array of cells, includes bone marrow adipocytes (BMAs), which constitute about 70% of the adult bone marrow volume and may play a significant role in tumor bone metastasis. BMAs can directly provide energy for tumor cells, promoting their proliferation and migration. Furthermore, BMAs participate in the tumor microenvironment's osteogenesis regulation, osteoclast(OC) regulation, and immune response through the secretion of adipokines, cytokines, and inflammatory factors. However, the precise mechanisms of BMAs in lung cancer bone metastasis remain largely unclear. This review primarily explores the role of BMAs and their secreted adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, Nesfatin-1, Resistin, chemerin, visfatin) in lung cancer bone metastasis, aiming to provide new insights into the mechanisms and clinical treatment of lung cancer bone metastasis.

Abstract
Background: In recent times there has been a surge in innovative techniques concerning complex abdominal wall surgery. The availability of simulation models for comprehensive training and skill set development remains limited. Methods: Cadaveric dissections of the porcine abdominal wall were conducted to assess the suitability of anesthetized porcine models for training in both minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Results: The panniculus carnosus, a typical muscular layer in mammals, is the outermost layer covering the anterolateral abdominal wall. Beneath it, there are four main pairs of abdominal wall muscles, mirroring the human anatomy. The rectus abdominis muscle runs straight along the linea alba and is surrounded by the rectus sheath, which is formed by the fusion of the lateral abdominal wall muscles and differs along the different regions of abdominal wall. The orientation of the muscle fibers in the lateral abdominal wall muscles, i.e., musculus obliquus externus, internus and transversus, is comparable to human anatomy. Although the transition lines between their muscular and aponeurotic part differ to some extent. Relevant for the adoption of surgical techniques, the transversus abdominis muscle is well-developed and resembles a bell curve shape as it transitions from its muscular to aponeurotic part. Conclusion: Despite minor differences in abdominal wall anatomy between pigs and humans, the porcine model provides a high level of fidelity in terms of both anatomical features and the development of skill sets relevant to hernia surgery.

Abstract
Aluminum is a metal element with significant neurotoxicity, and there is a substantial correlation between aluminum exposure and cognitive dysfunction. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is widely used as a marker of reactive astrocyte proliferation in response to pathological injury of the central nervous system. Studies of various neurodegenerative diseases have confirmed that the expression changes in GFAP are associated with nerve injury. We investigated the role of LNC000152 in the aluminum-induced reactive proliferation of astrocytes. By establishing two aluminum-exposed cell models of rat primary astrocytes and CTX-TNA2 cell lines, we examined the expression of LNC000152 and GFAP and detected cell proliferation with EdU and cell cycle changes with flow cytometry. The role of aluminum in promoting glial cell proliferation was verified; the expression levels of LNC000152 and GFAP increased with the concentration of aluminum exposure. Intervention of LNC000152 expression by siRNA technology revealed that LNC000152 affected glial cell responsive proliferation by influencing GFAP expression. These results suggest that LNC000152 plays a role in the reactive proliferation of astrocytes induced by aluminum.

Abstract
Introduction To explore the factors affecting the success of testicular torsion manual reduction and the safety of subsequent conservative treatment after successful reduction. Methods Clinical data of 66 patients with testicular torsion treated in our emergency department from February 2017 to February 2022 were retrospectively collected. Manual reduction without anesthesia was performed in 19 patients. Patients with successful manual reduction chose different subsequent treatments according to the wishes of themselves and their guardians, including continuing conservative treatment and surgical exploration. Relevant clinical data were collected and analyzed. Results Manual reduction was successful in 11 patients (11/19). Seven of them chose to continue conservative treatment, and four underwent surgical exploration immediately. Among the 7 patients who were treated conservatively, 3 underwent surgical treatment due to scrotal discomfort or testicular torsion at different stages, and the remaining 4 patients showed no recurrence of torsion during follow-up. Compared with other patients, patients with successful manual reduction had the shorter duration of pain (p < 0.05). The time from visiting our hospital to surgery in patients who attempted manual reduction was slightly shorter than those who underwent surgery directly (p > 0.05). The testes of these 11 patients were all successfully preserved. Conclusions The short duration of pain may contribute to the success of manual reduction, and manual reduction did not increase the preparation time before surgery. Due to the unpredictable risk of recurrence, immediate surgical treatment is still recommended, or postponed elective surgical treatment should be offered in the next days or weeks.

Abstract
Individuals with flatfoot have impaired proprioception owing to ligament laxity and impaired tendons, which can result in poor balance. Foot orthoses (FOs) have been reported to stimulate plantar mechanical receptors and are used to manage foot overpronation in individuals with flatfoot. However, the results of the use of FOs to improve balance are inconsistent. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to identify and investigate the effects of FOs on balance in individuals with flatfoot. Electronic databases were searched for articles published before March 2023. Peer-reviewed journal studies that included adult participants with flexible flatfoot and reported the effects of FOs on balance were included and classified based on the study design: randomized control trials (RCT) and non-RCTs. Four RCT studies were retained, and their methodological quality was assessed (mean, 63.2%; range 47.3%-73.1%: high), as were three non-RCT studies (mean, 54.1%; range, 42.1%-68.4%: high). Meta-analysis was performed by calculating the effect size using the standardized mean differences between the control and FO conditions. Transverse-arch insoles immediately improved static balance after use. However, no immediate significant effect was found for medial archsupport FOs, cuboid-posting FOs, or University of California Berkeley Laboratory FOs during the study period (2-5 weeks) when compared with the controls. The transverse-arch insole is the most effective FO feature for improving static balance. However, the high heterogeneity between study protocols contributes to the lack of evidence for the effects of FO on balance in people with flatfoot.

Abstract
The permanent left mandibular canines have been used for sexual dimorphism when human identification is necessary. Controversy remains whether the morphology of these teeth is actually useful to distinguish males and females. This study aimed to assess the sexual dimorphism of canines by means of a pioneering artificial intelligence approach to this end. A sample of 13,046 teeth radiographically registered from 5838 males and 7208 females between the ages of 6 and 22.99 years was collected. The images were annotated using Darwin V7 software. DenseNet121 was used and tested based on binary answers regarding the sex (male or female) of the individuals for 17 age categories of one year each (i.e. 6-6.99, 7.7.99… 22.22.99). Accuracy rates, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and confusion matrices were used to quantify and express the artificial intelligence's classification performance. The accuracy rates across age categories were between 57-76% (mean: 68%±5%). The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC analysis was between 0.58 and 0.77. The best performances were observed around the age of 12 years, while the worst were around the age of 7 years. The morphological analysis of canines for sex estimation should be restricted and allowed in practice only when other sources of dimorphic anatomic features are not available.

Abstract
Aluminum in its Al3+ form is a metal that inhibits plant growth, especially in acidic soils (pH < 5.5). Rapid and accurate quantitative detection of Al3+ in agricultural soils is critical for the timely implementation of remediation strategies. However, detecting metal ions requires time-consuming preparation of samples, using expensive instrumentation and non-portable spectroscopic techniques. As an alternative, electrochemical sensors offer a cost-effective and minimally invasive approach for in situ quantification of metal ions. Here, we developed and validated an electrochemical sensor based on bismuth-modified laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes for Al3+ quantitative detection in a range relevant to agriculture (1-300 ppm). Our results show a linear Al3+ detection range of 1.07-300 ppm with a variation coefficient of 5.3%, even in the presence of other metal ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+). The sensor offers a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 ppm and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.07 ppm. We compared its accuracy for soil samples with pH < 4.8 to within 89-98% of spectroscopic methods (ICP-OES) and potentiometric titration. This technology's portability, easy to use, and cost-effectiveness make it a promising candidate for in situ quantification and remediation of Al3+ in agricultural soils and other complex matrices.

Abstract
The 3D render volume reconstruction CT (3D-RVCT) produced detailed images of the PES region, determining its relationships with the surrounding structures. Despite extensive research in veterinary studies on the PES through gross anatomy and CT, there is a lack of studies on the PES of zebu cattle. The study aimed to analyze the PES of Zebu cattle using gross cross-sectional, radiographic, CT, and morphometric methods, with the use of 3D-RVCT to provide anatomical guidance for surgeons and students. The study was performed on sixteen PES regions to provide hard and soft tissues in CT images. Three are five tarsal bones and two large fused (III and IV) metatarsal bones that were completely fused except for their distal extremities, which were divided distally by the intertrochlear notch. The cortical thickness of the metatarsal bone was equal on both sides. The bony septum divided the medullary cavity between the two fused large metatarsal bones in the proximal distal half only and disappeared in the middle part. The reconstruction showed similar sizes in the right and left limbs, confirming the pes bones. The radiographic and CT images could be used as a normal reference for the interpretation of some clinical diseases in the PES. The 3D CT reconstruction of the pes bones was described by various CT oblique dorsal and plantar views. The study focuses on diagnosing PES disorders using CT imaging, improving medical interventions, improving Zebu cattle health outcomes, and empowering students to contribute to veterinary medicine research and advancements.

Abstract
This study aims to cultivate students' independent learning capacity, promote the interdisciplinary integration of "nursing + anatomy," and establish a curriculum system to enhance applied nursing abilities based on project-based teaching reform of everyday clinical nursing operations. A total of 151 second-year (class of 2021) undergraduate nursing students at a Chinese university were selected for this study. By adjusting the curriculum, reconstructing the teaching contents, employing the "hybrid + flip" teaching method based on BOPPPS (bridge-in, outcomes, preassessment, participatory learning, post-evaluation, summary), and implementing a teaching system based on the "three re-three linkage," a Human Anatomy curriculum with a focus on basic anatomical knowledge was developed and connected with nursing clinical operation practice. The restructuring of the course content received unanimous recognition from both the teaching staff and the students. Notably, students in the class of 2021 achieved significantly higher grades than did students in the class of 2020, who received traditional face-to-face instruction (p < 0.01). These results indicate enhanced clinical application skills among the former group of students. following the implementation of instructional reforms during one semester, students exhibited notable improvements in motivation, program implementation, self-management, and interpersonal communication. A statistically significant increase in overall scores for self-directed learning capacities over the preinstructional period was observed (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the findings of the student satisfaction surveys reflected highly favorable perceptions of the enriched instructional format, high levels of course engagement, frequent faculty-student interactions, and augmented overall competence. The practical implementation of the reform in the context of a Human Anatomy course for undergraduate nursing students led to significant positive outcomes, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Students' clinical application abilities and self-directed learning capacities notably improved, while overall satisfaction with the course remained high.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the pandemic, all universities had to switch to digital learning and teaching (DLT), the experiences were diverse. The advantages and obstacles of DLT are well reported in research. To ensure a sustainable DLT implementation, the requirements of institutions, educators and students should be aligned. OBJECTIVE This paper aims at identifying and describing the experiences made at the Swiss medical schools after having to switch from on-site to on-line teaching; in particular, the experienced issues, requirements, and solutions were investigated and compared to international literature. METHODS We conducted a literature review to derive themes and subthemes regarding the central aspects of the transition from on-site to on-line teaching. Also, we conducted semi-structured interviews with people responsible for the medical curricula at the Swiss Medical Schools. We used a purposive sampling method and invited eleven curriculum managers at the seven Swiss Medical Schools. The interviews were conducted in English, audio-recorded and transcribed. Subsequently the data was analysed with the software NVivo. We used a qualitative, deductive, content analysis to explore faculty experiences. RESULTS Twenty-four articles met the eligibility criteria and were included for full text screening. Of the included articles, 15 reported on DLT in general and nine articles reported on DLT during the Pandemic. The thematic analysis of the interviews resulted in four overall themes, requirements, obstacles, facilitators and advantages. Curriculum managers reported that institutions were relatively unprepared for the quick transition from onsite to online at the onset of the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Our research reports a lack of institutional structures, communication, digital competences and literacy, teaching strategies, as well as a theoretical foundation for DLT implementation. A conceptual framework for DLT adapted to the Swiss universities beyond the current situation is needed.

Abstract
The treatment of bone defects has always posed challenges in the field of orthopedics. Scaffolds, as a vital component of bone tissue engineering, offer significant advantages in the research and treatment of clinical bone defects. This study aims to provide an overview of how 3D printing technology is applied in the production of bone repair scaffolds. Depending on the materials used, the 3D-printed scaffolds can be classified into two types: single-component scaffolds and composite scaffolds. We have conducted a comprehensive analysis of material composition, the characteristics of 3D printing, performance, advantages, disadvantages, and applications for each scaffold type. Furthermore, based on the current research status and progress, we offer suggestions for future research in this area. In conclusion, this review acts as a valuable reference for advancing the research in the field of bone repair scaffolds.

Abstract
Heavy metals are ubiquitous environmental toxicants that have been known to have a serious effect on human and animal health. Aluminum (Al) is a widely distributed metal in nature. Al exposure has a detrimental impact on human fertility. This review focused on Al-induced male reproductive toxicity and the potential therapeutic approaches with some phytochemicals. Data from the literature showed that Al exposure is accompanied by a drastic decline in blood levels of FSH, LH, and testosterone, reduced sperm count, and affected sperm quality. Al exposure at high levels can cause oxidative stress by increasing ROS and RNS production, mediated mainly by downregulating Nrf2 signaling. Moreover, several investigations demonstrated that Al exposure evoked inflammation, evidenced by increased TNF-α and IL-6 levels. Additionally, substantial evidence concluded the key role of apoptosis in Al-induced testicular toxicity mediated by upregulating caspase-3 and downregulating Bcl2 protein. The damaging effects of Al on mitochondrial bioenergetics are thought to be due to the excessive generation of free radicals. This review helps to clarify the main mechanism involved in Al-associated testicular intoxication and the treatment strategy to attenuate the notable harmful effects on the male reproductive system. It will encourage clinical efforts to target the pathway involved in Al-associated testicular intoxication.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to determine whether the morphometric evaluation of the foramen magnum using computed tomography can be used as an accurate tool in estimating the sex of an individual. An extensive search of the databases, PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and Scopus, was carried out to procure articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The AQUA tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. A random effects model was used for the meta-analysis of the eligible studies using the STATA software, version 16, 2019 at 95% CI and p ≤ 0.05. Eleven eligible articles that measured the transverse and sagittal diameters of the foramen magnum using computed tomography were included in this study. The sagittal diameter of the foramen magnum was greater than the transverse diameter, and both the diameters were greater in males than in females. Meta-analysis revealed that both transverse and sagittal diameters were more reliable for male sex estimation. Since there is a dimensional variation between the male and female foramen magnum, it can be used for initial sex identification and also as an auxiliary to other advanced methods of sex estimation.
