Abstract
Molecular organization plays an essential role in organic semiconductors since it determines the extent of intermolecular interactions that govern the charge transport present in all electronic applications. The benefits of hydrogen bond-directed self-assembly on charge transport properties are demonstrated by comparing two analogous pyrrole-based, fused heptacyclic molecules. The rationally designed synthesis of these materials allows for inducing or preventing hydrogen bonding. Strategically located hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites control the solid-state arrangement, favoring the supramolecular expansion of the π-conjugated surface and the subsequent π-stacking as proved by X-ray diffraction and computational calculations. The consistency observed for the performance of organic field-effect transistors and the morphology of the organic thin films corroborate that higher stability and thermal robustness are achieved in the hydrogen-bonded material.

Abstract
The acceptor in organic solar cells (OSCs) is of paramount importance for achieving a high photovoltaic performance. Based on the well-known non-fullerene acceptor Y6, we designed a set of asymmetric A-D1A'D2-A type new acceptors Y6-C, Y6-N, Y6-O, Y6-Se, and Y6-Si by substituting the two S atoms of one thieno[3,2-b]thiophene unit with C, N, O, Se, and Si atoms, respectively. The electronic, optical, and crystal properties of Y6 and the designed acceptors, as well as the interfacial charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms between the donor PM6 and the investigated acceptors have been systematically studied. It is found that the newly designed asymmetric acceptors possess suitable energy levels and strong interactions with the donor PM6. Importantly, the newly designed acceptors exhibit enhanced light harvesting ability and more CT states with larger oscillator strengths in the 40 lowest excited states. Among the multiple CT mechanisms, the direct excitation of CT states is found to be more favored in the case of PM6/newly designed acceptors than that of PM6/Y6. This work not only offers a set of promising acceptors superior to Y6, but also demonstrates that designing acceptors with asymmetric structure could be an effective strategy to improve the performance of OSCs.

Abstract
The structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of high- and intermediate-spin transition metal phthalocyaninato complexes (MPc; M = V, Cr, Mn and Fe) have been theoretically investigated to look into the origin, symmetry and strength of the M–Pc bonding. DFT calculations coupled to the Ziegler’s extended transition state method and to an advanced charge density and bond order analysis allowed us to assess that the M–Pc bonding is dominated by σ interactions, with FePc having the strongest and most covalent M–Pc bond. According to experimental evidence, the lightest MPcs (VPc and CrPc) have a high-spin ground state (GS), while the MnPc and FePc GS spin is intermediate. Insights into the MPc unoccupied electronic structure have been gained by modelling M L2,3-edges X-ray absorption spectroscopy data from the literature through the exploitation of the current Density Functional Theory variant of the Restricted Open-Shell Configuration Interaction Singles (DFT/ROCIS) method. Besides the overall agreement between theory and experiment, the DFT/ROCIS results indicate that spectral features lying at the lowest excitation energies (EEs) are systematically generated by electronic states having the same GS spin multiplicity and involving M-based single electronic excitations; just as systematically, the L3-edge higher EE region of all the MPcs herein considered includes electronic states generated by metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer transitions involving the lowest-lying π* orbital (7eg) of the phthalocyaninato ligand.

Abstract
The structure formed by cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and cobalt octaethylporphyrin (CoOEP) with electron-acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), was studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. According to theoretical calculations, both cobalt systems can establish dispersion forces related to TCNQ and also in both cases the link between them is built by means of hydrogen bonds. Based on the results of these DFT calculations, we developed experimental work: the organic semiconductors were doped, and the thermal evaporation technique was used to prepare semiconductor thin films of such compounds. The structure of the films was studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CoPc-TCNQ and CoOEP-TCNQ films were investigated by means of UV-Vis measurements. The results obtained were used to estimate the type of transitions and the optical bandgap. The results were compared to the previously calculated theoretical bandgap. The CoOEP-TCNQ film presented the smallest theoretical and experimental bandgap. Finally, the electrical properties of the organic semiconductors were evaluated from a PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/indium tin oxide (ITO)/cobalt macrocycle-TCNQ/silver (Ag) device we prepared. The CoOEP-TCNQ-based device showed an ohmic behavior. The device manufactured from CoPc-TCNQ also showed an ohmic behavior at low voltages, but significantly changed to SCLC (space-charge limited conductivity) at high voltage values.

Abstract
The exploration of the utilization of sustainable, green energy represents one way in which it is possible to ameliorate the growing threat of the global environmental issues and the crisis in energy. Moisture, which is ubiquitous on Earth, contains a vast reservoir of low-grade energy in the form of gaseous water molecules and water droplets. It has now been found that a number of functionalized materials can generate electricity directly from their interaction with moisture. This suggests that electrical energy can be harvested from atmospheric moisture and enables the creation of a new range of self-powered devices. Herein, the basic mechanisms of moisture-induced electricity generation are discussed, the recent advances in materials (including carbon nanoparticles, graphene materials, metal oxide nanomaterials, biofibers, and polymers) for harvesting electrical energy from moisture are summarized, and some strategies for improving energy conversion efficiency and output power in these devices are provided. The potential applications of moisture electrical generators in self-powered electronics, healthcare, security, information storage, artificial intelligence, and Internet-of-things are also discussed. Some remaining challenges are also considered, together with a number of suggestions for potential new developments of this emerging technology.

Abstract
In this work, we present a comparative study of benzoid poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as electrode and as hole carrier transport layer (HTL) in the manufacture of organic photovoltaic devices using Fischer metal-carbene complexes. The performance of the different devices was evaluated for solar cell applications. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the thin films that integrated the devices. A more ordered and crystallized active film microstructure is observed when using benzoid PEDOT:PSS as nucleation layer. The optical gap for both direct and indirect electronic transitions was evaluated from ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy data (UV-vis), as well as the absorption coefficient (α), and the values are in the range of 2.10-2.93 eV. Photovoltaic devices with conventional architecture, using two different chromium carbenes as active layers, were manufactured, and their electrical behavior was studied. The devices were irradiated with different wavelengths between the infrared and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Using the PEDOT:PSS film as hole carrier transport layer (HTL) decreases the slope on the ohmic and space charge limited current (SCLC) regions and eliminates the trap-charge limited current (T-CLC) mechanism. Furthermore, a saturation current of ~1.95 × 10-10 A and higher current values ~1.75 × 10-2 A at 4 V, ~4 orders in magnitude larger were observed. The PEDOT:PSS films as HTL in the devices reduced the injection barrier, thus showing a better performance than as anodes in this type of organic solar cells.

Abstract
Photoinduced intra- and interlayer electron transfer (ET) of doubly bridged donor-acceptor molecule, porphyrin-fullerene dyad (PF), was studied in single- and multi-layered Langmuir-Schäfer (LS) films and in LS films, where PF and an efficient electron donating polymer polyhexyltiophene (PHT) formed a bilayer PHT/PF and multi-layered PHT/PF structures. The ET through layers were investigated by a method, which measures the photovoltaic (PV) response proportional to the number of charge-separated (CS) states and to the CS distance between the electrons and holes formed in pulsed photo-excitation. Primary conclusions were, that ET starts as formations of CS dyads (P+F-) in single-layers, continues as long-range intra-layer charge migrations following interlayer CS between two adjacent monolayers. Quantitative conclusions were, that the interlayer ET efficiency is 100% in the bi-layered PF structure (2PF), where two CS dyads in adjacent layers forms CS complexes (P+F/PF-) and that the probability to form longer or higher order of CS complexes follows an expression of a convergent geometric series, with a converting factor of 2/3. In the PHT/PF bilayer structure the ET efficiency was one order of magnitude higher, than that for the 2PF structure due to the ET from the CS dyads to ground state electron donor PHT, with an acceptor density, much higher than that of (P+F-).

Abstract
In organic electronics, an aromatic fused ring is a basic unit that provides π-electrons to construct semiconductors and governs the device performance. The main challenge in developing new π-skeletons for tuning the material properties is the limitation of the available chemical approach. Herein, we successfully synthesize two pentacyclic siloxy-bridged π-conjugated isomers to investigate the synergistic effects of Si and O atoms on the geometric and electronic influence of π-units in organic electronics. Notably, the synthesis routes for both isomers possess several advantages over the previous approaches for delivering conventional aromatic fused-rings, such as environmentally benign tin-free synthesis and few synthetic steps. To explore their potential application as photovoltaic materials, two isomeric acceptor-donor-acceptor type acceptors based on these two isomers were developed, showing a decent device efficiency of 10%, which indicates the great potential of this SiO-bridged ladder-type unit for the development of new high-performance semiconductor materials.

Abstract
2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine (tpy) is a versatile moiety used in the construction of small novel molecules or polymers. Extending or coupling tpy with π-conjugation structures can result in interesting optoelectronic properties. This mini-review summarizes the significant progress made over the past decades in the study of tpy-containing π-conjugated polymers and their application in light-emitting and photovoltaic materials. When coordinated with metal ions, tpy exhibits immense potential for the synthesis of metallo-supramolecular or metallo-polymer materials. Therefore, tpy-based metallo-polymers are the primary focus of this study. Selected examples will be reviewed with a special emphasis on the properties of these functional systems, which can consequently help further their application in light-to-electricity or electricity-to-light conversion fields.

Abstract
6,13-Difluoropentacene was synthesized from 1,4-difluorobenzene. Friedel-Crafts annulation of the latter with phthalic anhydride and subsequent reduction of the anthraquinone gave 1,4-difluoroanthracene. After ortho-lithiation and reaction with phthalic anhydride a carboxylic acid was obtained whose Friedel-Crafts acylation and subsequent reductive removal of the oxygen-functionalities resulted in the formation of the target compound. The HOMO-LUMO gap of 6,13-difluoropentacene was determined via UV-vis spectroscopy and compared to other fluorinated pentacenes.

Abstract
The rapid development of organic electronics is closely related to the availability of molecular materials with specific electronic properties. Here, we introduce a novel synthetic route enabling a unilateral functionalization of acenes along their long side, which is demonstrated by the synthesis of 1,2,10,11,12,14-hexafluoropentacene (1) and the related 1,2,9,10,11-pentafluorotetracene (2). Quantum chemical DFT calculations in combination with optical and X-ray absorption spectroscopy data indicate that the single-molecule properties of 1 are a connecting link between the organic semiconductor model systems pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene (PFP). In contrast, the crystal structure analysis reveals a different packing motif than for the parent molecules. This can be related to distinct F⋅⋅⋅H interactions identified in the corresponding Hirshfeld surface analysis and also affects solid-state properties such as the exciton binding energy and the sublimation enthalpy.

Abstract
π-conjugated gels are potentially useful for organic electronic applications. We present a π-conjugated ion gel, composed of substituted poly(para-phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) and an ionic liquid. This combination is well suited as an active material in a light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The nanosegregated structure of the gels achieves a large interface between the polymer and ionic liquid (IL) and allows-by nature of its structure-facile ion conduction and continuous electrical conduction paths. Efficient doping significantly improves the response time. This concept should be applicable to other π-conjugated gels, and it allows the construction of gel-LECs.

Abstract
Here, we demonstrate the three-component self-assembly of functionalized small molecules (donor and acceptor) and a polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymer using the supramolecular approach. The introduction of functional groups on both the donor (1-pyrenebutyric acid, PBA) and acceptor (functionalized naphthalene diimide, FNDI) molecules can form stable charge-transfer (CT) complexes within the block copolymer domains and these supramolecules exhibited a charge carrier mobility of around 1.01 × 10-4 cm2 (V s)-1. In this case, both the molecules can form H-bonding with P4VP chains, and as well as π-π stacking between the PBA and FNDI molecules is also possible within the block copolymer domains. These noncovalent interactions lead to the formation of stable hierarchical structures and CT complexes between PBA and FNDI, where bilayer donor-acceptor (D-A) stacks formed within the block copolymer microdomains. Overall, the organization of both functionalized donor and acceptor molecules within the block copolymer domain exhibits an enhanced charge carrier mobility, which is potentially useful in the fabrication of organic photovoltaic cells and organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
Organic heterostructures have emerged as highly promising transducers to realize high performance gas sensors. The key reason for such a huge interest in these devices is the associated organic heterojunction effect in which opposite free charges are accumulated at the interface making it highly conducting, which can be exploited in producing highly sensitive and faster response kinetics gas sensors. Metal phthalocyanines (MPc) have been extensively studied to fabricate organic heterostructures because of the large possibilities of structural engineering which are correlated with their bulk thin film properties. Accordingly, in this review, we have performed a comprehensive literature survey of the recent researches reported about MPc based organic heterostructures and their application in gas sensors. These heterostructures were used in Organic Field-Effect Transistor and Molecular Semiconductor-Doped Insulator sensing device configurations, in which change in their electrical properties such as field-effect mobility and saturation current in the former and current at a fixed bias in the latter under redox gases exposure were assessed to determine the chemosensing performances. These sensing devices have shown very high sensitivity to redox gases like nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone and ammonia (NH3), which monitoring is indispensable for implementing environmental guidelines. Some of these sensors exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity to NH3 demonstrated by a detection limit of 140 ppb and excellent signal stability under variable humidity, making them among the best NH3 sensors.

Abstract
In the current work, flexible diodes with flat heterojunction and dispersed heterojunction architecture were manufactured with to study the behavior of thin films of disodium phthalocyanine (Na2Pc). The thin film devices, using the electronic acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), were fabricated by high-vacuum thermal evaporation with annealing post-treatment in order to optimize their behavior. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion force analysis were carried out in order to simulate molecular interactions and to establish the nature of the weak interactions between the Na2Pc and TCNQ fragments. In the optimized structure of the coupled Na2Pc-TCNQ, the electronic relationship between phthalocyanine and TCNQ was observed to be through hydrogen bonds with bond lengths of 2.94 and 3.13 Å. Dispersed heterojunction device current density values were considerably larger than those of the flat heterojunction device. Barrier heights of 1.024 and 0.909 eV and charge mobilities of 10-10 and 10-9 m2/Vs for the flat heterojunction device and the dispersed heterojunction device, respectively, were observed. A small effect was observed on the electrical properties by thermal annealing on the flat heterojunction device. The threshold voltage decreased from 1.203 to 1.147 V and φb decreased by 0.001 eV.

Abstract
Aromatic diimides are one of the most important chromophores in the construction of n-type organic semiconductors, which lag far behind their p-type counterpart but are necessary for ambipolar transistors, p-n junctions and organic complementary circuits. Herein, we establish a facile one-pot domino synthetic protocol for aromatic diimides via palladium-catalyzed carbonylation of tetrabromo aromatic precursors. Taking tetrabromocorannulene (TBrCor) and tetrabromo-2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene (TBrPy) as the typical examples, we obtained diimide derivatives in yields of about 50 %, one order of magnitude higher than that of the traditional multi-step diimidization. As demonstrated in the case of corannulene diimide, the efficient diimidization not only allows the LUMO levels to be lowered significantly but also provides an ordered and closer packing structures, opening up possibilities to the development of n-type semiconducting materials based on a variety of aromatic systems.

Abstract
The synthesis, optoelectronic characterization and device properties of a cross-linkable fullerene derivative, [6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric benzoxazine ester (PCBB) is reported. PCBB shows all the basic photophysical and electrochemical properties of the parent compound [6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric methyl ester (PCBM). Thermal cross-linking of the benzoxazine moiety in PCBB resulted in the formation of cross-linked, solvent resistive adhesive films (C-PCBB). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopic studies showed dramatic reduction in the roughness and aggregation behaviour of P3HT-PCBM polymer blend film upon incorporation of C-PCBB interlayer. An inverted bulk heterojunction solar cell based on the configuration ITO/ZnO/C-PCBB/P3HT-PCBM/V2 O5 /Ag achieved 4.27 % power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the reference device ITO/ZnO/P3HT-PCBM/V2 O5 /Ag (PCE=3.28 %). This 25 % increase in the efficiency is due to the positive effects of C-PCBB on P3HT/C-PCBB and PCBM/C-PCBB heterojunctions.

Abstract
With the ambition of solving the challenges of the shortage of fossil fuels and their associated environmental pollution, visible-light-driven splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using semiconductor photocatalysts has emerged as a promising technology to provide environmentally friendly energy vectors. Among the current library of developed photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers present unique advantages of sufficient light-absorption efficiency, excellent stability, tunable electronic properties, and economic applicability. As a class of rising photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers offer high flexibility in tuning the framework of the backbone and porosity to fulfill the requirements for photocatalytic applications. In the past decade, significant progress has been made in visible-light-driven water splitting employing organic conjugated polymers. The recent development of the structural design principles of organic conjugated polymers (including linear, crosslinked, and supramolecular self-assembled polymers) toward efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and overall water splitting is described, thus providing a comprehensive reference for the field. Finally, current challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract
Lignin is the second most earth-abundant biopolymer having aromatic unit structures, but it has received less attention than other natural biomaterials. Recent advances in the development of lignin-based materials, such as mesoporous carbon, flexible thin films, and fiber matrix, have found their way into applications to photovoltaic devices, energy-storage systems, mechanical energy harvesters, and catalytic components. In this Review, we summarize and suggest another dimension of lignin valorization as a building block for the synthesis of functional materials in the fields of energy and environmental applications. We cover lignin-based materials in the photovoltaic and artificial photosynthesis for solar energy conversion applications. The most recent technological evolution in lignin-based triboelectric nanogenerators is summarized from its fundamental properties to practical implementations. Lignin-derived catalysts for solar-to-heat conversion and oxygen reduction are discussed. For energy-storage applications, we describe the utilization of lignin-based materials in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors (e.g., electrodes, binders, and separators). We also summarize the use of lignin-based materials as heavy-metal adsorbents for environmental remediation. This Review paves the way to future potentials and opportunities of lignin as a renewable material for energy and environmental applications.

Abstract
Herein, we described an efficient copper-catalyzed chemo-divergent tandem reaction of N-(ortho-alkynyl)aryl-pyrrole and (iso)indoles, delivering ring-fused N-heterocycles in good yields in an atom-economical manner. N-(ortho-alkynyl)aryl-pyrrole and indoles undergo the tandem cyclization/migration reaction, in which the group at 2-position was migrated to 3-position. In contrast, the dearomative cyclization of N-(ortho-alkynyl)aryl-isoindoles would occur to deliver the N-fused tetracyclic products efficiently.

Abstract
We introduce a computational approach to study porphyrin-like transition metal complexes, bridging density functional theory and exact many-body techniques, such as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We first derive a multi-orbital Anderson impurity Hamiltonian starting from first principles considerations that qualitatively reproduce generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+U results when ignoring inter-orbital Coulomb repulsion U ′ and Hund exchange J. An exact canonical transformation is used to reduce the dimensionality of the problem and make it amenable to DMRG calculations, including all many-body terms (both intra- and inter-orbital), which are treated in a numerically exact way. We apply this technique to FeN 4 centers in graphene and show that the inclusion of these terms has dramatic effects: as the iron orbitals become single occupied due to the Coulomb repulsion, the inter-orbital interaction further reduces the occupation, yielding a non-monotonic behavior of the magnetic moment as a function of the interactions, with maximum polarization only in a small window at intermediate values of the parameters. Furthermore, U ′ changes the relative position of the peaks in the density of states, particularly on the iron d z 2 orbital, which is expected to affect the binding of ligands greatly.

Abstract
An electron-rich fused indoloindole-based poly(indoloindole-selenophene vinylene selenophene) was synthesized and characterized. Soxhlet can be obtained by continuously purifying the product with a specific solvent and obtaining a pure polymer with a high concentration. Molecular weight is affected by the vapor pressure of marginal solvent, and the polymer was fractionated using tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and chlorobenzene. Solubility is closely related to the morphology of bulk heterojunction and device parameters. In the solution process of fabricating the organic solar cell, securement of solubility has a great effect on the performance of the device, because morphology and orientation of a photo-active layer which significantly affect charge transport in the device. Since tetrahydrofuran (THF) Soxhlet solvents have high vapor pressure and appropriate solubility parameters, THF induced the best solubility of P-IDI-SVS materials for organic solvents. And through additive optimization, the performance of the device based on P-IDI-SVS from THF-Soxhlet extraction was enhanced. This is expected to be a meaningful study because the effect on solubility of Soxhlet solvent suggests factors to be considered in the solution process in organic solar cell research. In addition, surface modified bulk heterojunction was observed using atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence, time-correlated single photon counting and Raman spectroscopy analysis.

Abstract
Rodlike π-conjugated molecules in which two OPV fragments are connected through a diacetylene bond self-assemble in aqueous and organic media. Optical spectroscopy and AFM measurements indicated that, in water, strong hydrophobic interactions between π-cores promote aggregation into robust, uniform micellar structures. In contrast, in apolar solvents, a fibrilar morphology is obtained by coiling of columnar stacks. These stacks are formed in a nucleation-elongation process with degrees of cooperativity of 0.006, that is influenced by the low rotation barriers around the σ-bonds in the diacetylene linker.

Abstract
Perylenediimides (PDIs) have emerged as potential materials for optoelectronic applications. In the current work, four PDI derivatives, substituted at imide nitrogen with 2,6-diisopropyl phenyl, 2-nitrophenyl, diphenylmethylene, and pentafluorophenyl groups, have been synthesized from perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride using a facile imidization synthesis process. PDI derivatives have been spectroscopically characterized for their structure and optical properties. Temperature-variable absorption and emission spectroscopy study confirmed the H-aggregation property. H-aggregation along with strong emission suggests the slipped π-π stacking of PDI molecules. Electrochemical analysis was performed for their redox behavior and calculation of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of ordered structures. The PDI derivatives showed excellent electron conductivity without doping and 5-10× higher electron mobility than that of state-of-the-art fullerene acceptor phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). Finally, the charge generation and charge transfer phenomenon was studied by transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). TAS showed ultrafast charge transfer from the poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT) donor polymer to PDI and formation of long-lived charge-separated states similar to fullerene derivative PC61BM/P3HT blends. Such PDI derivatives with excellent solubility and photophysical and electronic properties are potential n-type materials to be used in organic electronic devices.

Abstract
We compare two small π-conjugated donor-bridge-acceptor organic molecules differing mainly in the number of thiophene rings in their bridging motifs (1 ring in 1; 2 rings in 2) with the aim of rationalizing the origin of the enhancement in the singlet exciton diffusion coefficient and length of 1 with respect to 2. By combining force field molecular dynamics and micro electrostatic schemes with time-dependent density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we dissect the nature of the lowest electronic excitations in amorphous thin films of these molecules and model the transport of singlet excitons across their broadly disordered energy landscapes. In addition to a longer excited-state lifetime associated with a more pronounced intramolecular charge-transfer character, our calculations reveal that singlet excitons in 1 are capable of funneling through long-distance hopping percolation pathways, presumably as a result of the less anisotropic shape of the molecule, which favours long-range 3D transport.

Abstract
Efficient quantum-chemical methods that are able to describe intermolecular charge transfer are crucial for modeling organic semiconductors. However, the correct description of intermolecular charge transfer with density-functional theory (DFT) is hampered by the fractional charge error of approximate exchange-correlation (xc) functionals. Here, we investigate the charge transfer induced by an external electric field in a tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) complex as a test case. For this seemingly simple model system, a supermolecular DFT treatment fails with most conventional xc functionals. Here, we present an extension of subsystem DFT to subsystems with a fractional number of electrons. We show that within such a framework, it becomes possible to overcome the fractional charge error by enforcing the correct dependence of each subsystem's total energy on the subsystem's fractional charge. Such a subsystem DFT approach allows for a correct description of the intermolecular charge transfer in the TTF-TCNQ model complex. The approach presented here can be generalized to larger molecular aggregates and will thus allow for modeling organic semiconductor materials accurately and efficiently.
