Metal-organic frameworks as selectivity regulators for hydrogenation reactions

Bionic Mineralization toward Scalable MOF Films for Ampere-Level Biomass Upgrading

With significant advances in metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructure preparation, however, the facile synthesis of large-scale MOF films with precise control of the interface structure and surface chemistry is still challenging to achieve with satisfactory performance. Herein, we introduce a universal strategy bridging metal corrosion chemistry and bionic mineralization to synthesize 16 MOF films on 7 metal supports under ambient conditions. The robustness to explore unlimited libraries of MOF films (e.g., carboxylate-, N-heterocycle-, phenolic-, and phosphonate-MOFs) on supports is evoked by independently regulating the metal redox behavior, electrolyte properties, and organic ligands along with hydrogen evolution or oxygen reduction, which offers the basic guidelines for regulating the microstructure and composition of MOFs on the Pourbaix diagram. In conjunction with multiple manufacturing methods, we demonstrated proof of concept for "printing" a large variety of MOF patterns from micrometer to meter scales. Furthermore, a large-area electrolyzer (64 cm2) devised enables 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation to achieve a record-breaking current of 3.0 A at 1.63 V with 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid production, leading to the simultaneous production of H2 gas and valuable feedstocks. The improved electrocatalytic activity for significantly boosting the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation exemplifies one of the functional MOF films for given applications beyond biomass upgrading.

Construction of UiO-66-NH2 decorated by MoS2 QDs as photocatalyst for rapid and effective visible-light driven Cr(VI) reduction

The photoactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are good candidates for photocatalysts, but the quick electron-hole pairs recombination has greatly restricted the photocatalytic ability of MOFs. To improve the photoactivity of MOFs, MOFs-based composite materials have been extensively studied. Here, we successfully integrated MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) with UiO-66-NH2 for the first time under hydrothermal conditions. The as-prepared MoS2 QDs/UiO-66-NH2 (MS-U) had good visible light response ability (absorption edge at 445 nm), and charge separation and transfer ability, which lays the foundation for the photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction. Photocatalytic studies revealed that MoS2 QDs-5/UiO-66-NH2 (MS-U-5) had superior Cr(VI) reduction activity than pure MoS2 QDs and UiO-66-NH2. MS-U-5 could remove 98% Cr(VI) at pH= 2 with visible light irradiation for 20 min, which is the fastest visible light driven Cr(VI) reduction rate among the reported MOFs-based composite photocatalysts without the presence of any cocatalysts or scavengers as far as we know. Importantly, MS-U-5 could be reused at least three times. In the end, the possible electron transfer path and mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction was also investigated.

Linker Engineering of Sandwich-Structured Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Optimized Photocatalytic H2 Production

While the microenvironment around catalytic sites is recognized to be crucial in thermocatalysis, its roles in photocatalysis remain subtle. In this work, a series of sandwich-structured metal-organic framework (MOF) composites, UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-X (X means functional groups), is rationally constructed for visible-light photocatalytic H2 production. By varying the ─X groups of the UiO-66-X shell, the microenvironment of the Pt sites and photosensitive UiO-66-NH2 core can be simultaneously modulated. Significantly, the MOF composites with identical light absorption and Pt loading present distinctly different photocatalytic H2 production rates, following the ─X group sequence of ─H > ─Br > ─NA (naphthalene) > ─OCH3  > ─Cl > ─NO2 . UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-H demonstrates H2 production rate up to 2708.2 µmol g-1  h-1 , ≈222 times that of UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-NO2 . Mechanism investigations suggest that the variation of the ─X group can balance the charge separation of the UiO-66-NH2 core and the proton reduction ability of Pt, leading to an optimal activity of UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-H at the equilibrium point.

New Function of Metal-Organic Framework: Structurally Ordered Metal Promoter

The remarkable roles of metal promoters have been known for nearly a century, but it is still a challenge to find a suitable structure model to reveal the action mechanism behind metal promoters. Herein, a new function of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed as an ideal model to construct structurally ordered metal promoters by a targeted post-modification strategy. MOFs as model not only favor clearing the real action mechanism behind metal promoters, but also can anchor one or multiple kinds of metal promoters especially noble metal promoters. Typically, the as-prepared Pd/bpy-UiO-Cu catalysts show high selectivity (>99%) toward 4-nitrophenylethane in 4-nitrostyrene hydrogenation, mainly due to the enhanced interaction between Pd nanoparticles and MOF carriers induced by Cu promoters, thus inhibiting the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenylethane. This strategy with flexibility and universality will open up a new route to synthesize efficient catalysts with structurally ordered metal promoters.

Mitochondrial-targeting Mn3O4/UIO-TPP nanozyme scavenge ROS to restore mitochondrial function for osteoarthritis therapy

Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced mitochondrial damage has impact on osteoarthritis (OA). Nanozyme mimics as natural enzyme alternatives to scavenge excessive ROS has offered a promising strategy for OA therapy. Herein, we reported a novel mitochondrial-targeting Mn3O4/UIO-TPP nanozyme using metal-organic frameworks with loaded Mn3O4 as the enzyme-like active core combining mitochondria-targeting triphenylphosphine (TPP) groups to serve as ROS scavengers for therapy of OA. With sequential catalysis of superoxide dismutase-like, catalase (CAT)-like, and hydroxyl radical (·OH) scavenging potentials, the nanozyme can target mitochondria by crossing subcellular barriers to effectively eliminate ROS to restore mitochondrial function and inhibit inflammation and chondrocyte apoptosis. It also has favorable biocompatibility and biosafety. Based on anterior cruciate ligament transection-induced OA joint models, this mitochondrial-targeting nanozyme effectively mitigated the inflammatory response with the Pelletier score reduction of 49.9% after 8-week therapy. This study offers a prospective approach to the design of nanomedicines for ROS-related diseases.

Ultrafast Photocatalytic Detoxification of Mustard Gas Simulants by a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Dangling Porphyrin Molecules

Developing effective catalysts to degrade chemical warfare agents is of great significance. Herein, a mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) composite material dangled with porphyrin molecules (denote as TCPP@MIL-101(Cr), TCPP = tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) is reported, which can be used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for detoxification of mustard gas simulants 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) with a half-life of 1 min. The catalytic performance of TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is comparable to that of homogeneous molecular porphyrin. Mechanistic studies reveal that both 1 O2 and O2 •- are efficiently generated and play vital roles in the oxidation reaction. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are attached to the TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) to further enhance the catalytic activity with a benchmark half-life of 45 s, which is the fastest record so far. A medical mask loaded TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is fabricated for practical applications, which can selectively photoxidize CEES to CEESO under sunlight and air atmosphere, exhibiting the best degradation performance among the reported fabric-like composite materials.

Size- and Emission-Controlled Synthesis of Full-Color Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for Tryptophan Detection

The development of nanoscaled luminescent metal-organic frameworks (nano-LMOFs) with organic linker-based emission to explore their applications in sensing, bioimaging and photocatalysis is of great interest as material size and emission wavelength both have remarkable influence on their performances. However, there is lack of platforms that can systematically tune the emission and size of nano-LMOFs with customized linker design. Herein two series of fcu- and csq-type nano-LMOFs, with precise size control in a broad range and emission colors from blue to near-infrared, were prepared using 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative based ditopic- and tetratopic carboxylic acids as the emission sources. The modification of tetratopic carboxylic acids using OH and NH2 as the substituent groups not only induces significant emission bathochromic shift of the resultant MOFs, but also endows interesting features for their potential applications. As one example, we show that the non-substituted and NH2 -substituted nano-LMOFs exhibit turn-off and turn-on responses for highly selective and sensitive detection of tryptophan over other nineteen natural amino acids. This work sheds light on the rational construction of nano-LMOFs with specific emission behaviours and sizes, which will undoubtedly facilitate their applications in related areas.

Incorporation of Chiral Frustrated Lewis Pair into Metal-Organic Framework with Tailored Microenvironment for Heterogeneous Enantio- and Chemoselective Hydrogenation

The development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts with multiselectivity (e.g., enantio- and chemoselectivity) has long been sought after but with limited progress being made so far. To achieve enantio- and chemoselectivity in a heterogeneous system, as inspired by enzymes, we illustrate herein an approach of creating an enzyme-mimic region (EMR) within the nanospace of a metal-organic framework (MOF) as exemplified in the context of incorporating a chiral frustrated Lewis pair (CFLP) into a MOF with a tailored pore environment. Due to the high density of the EMR featuring the active site of CFLP and auxiliary sites of the hydroxyl group/open metal site within the vicinity of CFLP, the resultant EMR@MOF demonstrated excellent catalysis performance in heterogeneous hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated imines to afford chiral β-unsaturated amines with high yields and high enantio- and chemoselectivity. The role of the hydroxyl group/open metal site in regulating chemoselectivity was proved by the observation of a catalyst-substrate interaction experimentally, which was also rationalized by computational results. This work not only contributes a MOF as a new platform for multiselective catalysis but also opens a promising avenue to develop heterogeneous catalysts with multiselectivity for challenging yet important transformations.

Yolk-Shell and Hollow Zr/Ce-UiO-66 for Manipulating Selectivity in Tandem Reactions and Photoreactions

One of the hallmarks of multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is to finely tune their active centers to achieve product selectivity. In particular, obtaining bimetallic MOF hollow structures with precisely tailored redox centers under the same topology is still challenging despite a recent surge of such efforts. Herein, we present an engineering strategy named "cluster labilization" to generate hierarchically porous MOF composites with hollow structures and tunable active centers. By partially replacing zirconium with cerium in the hexanuclear clusters of UiO-66, unevenly distributed yolk-shell structures (YSS) were formed. Through acid treatment or annealing of the YSS precursor, single-shell hollow structures (SSHS) or double-shell hollow structures (DSHS) can be obtained, respectively. The active centers in SSHS and DSHS differ in their species, valence, and spatial locations. More importantly, YSS, SSHS, and DSHS with distinct active centers and microenvironments exhibit tunable catalytic activity, reversed selectivity, and high stability in the tandem reaction and the photoreaction.

Integration of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metals: Synergy for Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis is a highly promising technology widely used in clean energy conversion. There is a continuing need to develop advanced electrocatalysts to catalyze the critical electrochemical reactions. Integrating metal active species, including various metal nanostructures (NSs) and atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) leads to the formation of promising heterogeneous electrocatalysts that take advantage of both components. Among them, MOFs can provide support and protection for the active sites on guest metals, and the resulting host-guest interactions can synergistically enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this review, three key concerns on MOF-metal heterogeneous electrocatalysts regarding the catalytic sites, conductivity, and catalytic stability are first presented. Then, rational integration strategies of MOFs and metals, including the integration of metal NSs via surface anchoring, space confining, and MOF coating, as well as the integration of ADMSs either with the metal nodes/linkers or within the pores of MOFs, along with their recent progress on synergistic cooperation for specific electrochemical reactions are summarized. Finally, current challenges and possible solutions in applying these increasingly concerned electrocatalysts are also provided.

Review: Synthesis of metal organic framework-based composites for application as immunosensors in food safety

Ensuring food safety continues to be one of the major global challenges. For effective food safety monitoring, fast, sensitive, portable, and efficient food safety detection strategies must be devised. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials that have attracted attention for use in high-performance sensors for food safety detection owing to their advantages such as high porosity, large specific surface area, adjustable structure, and easy surface functional modification. Immunoassay strategies based on antigen-antibody specific binding are one of the important means for accurate and rapid detection of trace contaminants in food. Emerging MOFs and their composites with excellent properties are being synthesized, providing new ideas for immunoassays. This article summarizes the synthesis strategies of MOFs and MOF-based composites and their applications in the immunoassays of food contaminants. The challenges and prospects of the preparation and immunoassay applications of MOF-based composites are also presented. The findings of this study will contribute to the development and application of novel MOF-based composites with excellent properties and provide insights into advanced and efficient strategies for developing immunoassays.

Hierarchical conductive metal-organic framework films enabling efficient interfacial mass transfer

Heterogeneous reactions associated with porous solid films are ubiquitous and play an important role in both nature and industrial processes. However, due to the no-slip boundary condition in pressure-driven flows, the interfacial mass transfer between the porous solid surface and the environment is largely limited to slow molecular diffusion, which severely hinders the enhancement of heterogeneous reaction kinetics. Herein, we report a hierarchical-structure-accelerated interfacial dynamic strategy to improve interfacial gas transfer on hierarchical conductive metal-organic framework (c-MOF) films. Hierarchical c-MOF films are synthesized via the in-situ transformation of insulating MOF film precursors using π-conjugated ligands and comprise both a nanoporous shell and hollow inner voids. The introduction of hollow structures in the c-MOF films enables an increase of gas permeability, thus enhancing the motion velocity of gas molecules toward the c-MOF film surface, which is more than 8.0-fold higher than that of bulk-type film. The c-MOF film-based chemiresistive sensor exhibits a faster response towards ammonia than other reported chemiresistive ammonia sensors at room temperature and a response speed 10 times faster than that of the bulk-type film.

Introducing Frustrated Lewis Pairs to Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Hydrogenation of N-Heterocycles

Hydrogenated nitrogen heterocyclic compounds play a critical role in the pharmaceutical, polymer, and agrochemical industries. Recent studies on partial hydrogenation of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds have focused on costly and toxic precious metal catalysts. As an important class of main-group catalysts, frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been widely applied in catalytic hydrogenation reactions. In principle, the combination of FLPs and metal-organic framework (MOF) is anticipated to efficiently enhance the recyclability performance of FLPs; however, the previously studied MOF-FLPs showed low reactivity in the hydrogenation of N-heterocycles compounds. Herein, we offer a novel P/B type MOF-FLP catalyst that was achieved via a solvent-assisted linker incorporation approach to boost catalytic hydrogenation reactions. Using hydrogen gas under moderate pressure, the proposed P/B type MOF-FLP can serve as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for selective hydrogenation of quinoline and indole to tetrahydroquinoline and indoline-type drug compounds in high yield and excellent recyclability.

In Situ Charge Modification within Prussian Blue Analogue Nanocubes by Plasma for Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

A targeted defect-induced strategy of metal sites in a porous framework is an efficient avenue to improve the performance of a catalyst. However, achieving such an activation without destroying the ordered framework is a major challenge. Herein, a dielectric barrier discharge plasma can etch the Fe(CN)₆ group of the NiFe Prussian blue analogue framework in situ through reactive oxygen species generated in the air. Density functional theory calculations prove that the changed local electronic structure and coordination environment of Fe sites can significantly improve oxygen evolution reaction catalytic properties. The modified NiFe Prussian blue analogue is featured for only 316 mV at a high current density (100 mA cm^-2), which is comparable to that of commercial alkaline catalysts. In a solar cell-driven alkaline electrolyzer, the overall electrolysis efficiency is up to 64% under real operation conditions. Over 80 h long-time continuous test under 100 mA cm^-2 highlights superior durability. The density functional theory calculations confirm that the formation of OOH* is the rate-determining step over Fe sites, and Fe(CN)₆ vacancy and extra oxygen atoms can introduce charge redistribution to the catalyst surface, which finally enhances the oxygen evolution reaction catalytic properties by reducing the overpotential by 0.10 V. Both experimental and theoretical results suggest that plasma treatment strategy is useful for modifying the skeletal material nondestructively at room temperature, which opens up a broad prospect in the field of catalyst production.

Construction of N-Doped Carbon-Modified Ni/SiO2 Catalyst Promoting Cinnamaldehyde Selective Hydrogenation

At present, the selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes remains a challenge due to competition between unsaturated functional groups (C=C and C=O). In this study, N-doped carbon deposited on silica-supported nickel Mott-Schottky type catalysts (Ni/SiO₂@N_xC) was prepared for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) by using the respective hydrothermal method and high-temperature carbonization method. The prepared optimal Ni/SiO₂@N₇C catalyst achieved 98.9% conversion and 83.1% selectivity for 3-phenylpropionaldehyde (HCAL) in the selective hydrogenation reaction of CAL. By constructing the Mott-Schottky effect, the electron transfer from metallic Ni to N-doped carbon at their contact interface was promoted, and the electron transfer was demonstrated by XPS and UPS. Experimental results indicated that by modulating the electron density of metallic Ni, the catalytic hydrogenation of C=C bonds was preferentially performed to obtain higher HCAL selectivity. Meanwhile, this work also provides an effective way to design electronically adjustable type catalysts for more selective hydrogenation reactions.

Aqueous phase conversion of CO2 into acetic acid over thermally transformed MIL-88B catalyst

Sustainable production of acetic acid is a high priority due to its high global manufacturing capacity and numerous applications. Currently, it is predominantly synthesized via carbonylation of methanol, in which both the reactants are fossil-derived. Carbon dioxide transformation into acetic acid is highly desirable to achieve net zero carbon emissions, but significant challenges remain to achieve this efficiently. Herein, we report a heterogeneous catalyst, thermally transformed MIL-88B with Fe⁰ and Fe₃O₄ dual active sites, for highly selective acetic acid formation via methanol hydrocarboxylation. ReaxFF molecular simulation, and X-ray characterisation results show a thermally transformed MIL-88B catalyst consisting of highly dispersed Fe⁰/Fe(II)-oxide nanoparticles in a carbonaceous matrix. This efficient catalyst showed a high acetic acid yield (590.1 mmol/g_cat.L) with 81.7% selectivity at 150 °C in the aqueous phase using LiI as a co-catalyst. Here we present a plausible reaction pathway for acetic acid formation reaction via a formic acid intermediate. No significant difference in acetic acid yield and selectivity were noticed during the catalyst recycling study up to five cycles. This work is scalable and industrially relevant for carbon dioxide utilisation to reduce carbon emissions, especially when green methanol and green hydrogen are readily available in future.

Zr-MOF-Induced Smart Accumulation Enables Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Detection of Dioxin at ppt Level in Food Samples

The fast and economical detection of trace polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) in food samples by current mass spectrum-based methods is hindered by tedious sample preparation and bulky & expensive analytical instruments. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) successfully detects many organic pollutants in foods but not dioxins because the employed metal nanoparticles weakly adsorb hydrophobic PCDDs. Herein, we report the detection of PCDDs in milk with SERS for the first time using a bifunctional substrate consisting of Au nanoparticles embedded in a zirconium-based metal-organic framework shell (AuNP/Zr-MOF). 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), as the most toxic PCDD, is detected as low as 1.2 parts per trillion (ppt) in real milk samples with massive interfering substances in 30 min, which is the lowest among all reported methods. The aromatic rings of Zr-MOF promote the smart accumulation of TCDD through π-π interactions, and Au-Cl interactions drive TCDD onto Au surfaces. Zr-MOF shells with pore sizes of 12.7 and 20 Å block the accessibility of larger interfering molecules. A one-step apparatus and protocol are established to be superior to traditional methods in terms of time and cost. This work provides new insight into a rational screening method for the detection of persistent organic pollutants in a real sample matrix.

A one-dimensional cobalt-based coordination polymer as a cathode material of lithium-ion batteries

For obtaining high-performance lithium-ion batteries, it is important to develop new cathode materials with high capacity. Herein, a one-dimensional coordination polymer [Co(4-DTBPT) (DMF)₂(H₂O)₂] (4-DTBPT) (C₁₀H₄O₈) (Co-DTBPT) (4-DTBPT = 2,7-di(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4yl)benzo[lmn][3,8] phenanthroline-1,3,6,8-(2H,7H)-tetraone; DMF = dimethylformamide) was synthesized and its electrochemical performance as the cathode material of lithium-ion batteries was first investigated. The Co-DTBPT electrode showed better cycling stability and a specific capacity of 55 mA h g^-1 at 50 mA g^-1 after 50 cycles, and the coulombic efficiency was close to 100%. The capacity contribution of the Co-DTBPT electrode may be ascribed to the redox reaction of the Co(II) ion and the 4-DTBPT ligand in the process of charge and discharge. Our work proves once again that using one-dimensional coordination polymers as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries is a feasible way.

Design and Electrochemical Chiral Sensing of the Robust Sandwich Chiral Composite d-His-ZIF-8@Au@ZIF-8

In the pursuit of chiral materials with significant chiral recognition effects and stability, various strategies have been explored, among which the integration of metal nanoparticles and chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) is highly promising. However, metal nanoparticles (MNPs)/CMOFs show high chiral properties but inferior stabilities due to the MNPs being easily detached from the outside layer under certain conditions. Sandwich MOFs@MNPs@CMOF chiral materials can overcome this dilemma because the sandwich structure can maximize the regulation of the chiral interface activity, while the controlled outer layer can stop the MNPs from falling off in the procedure of chiral recognition. Here, a novel sandwich chiral material (d-His-ZIF-8@Au@ZIF-8) was synthesized by a ligand-assisted strategy with a well-defined sandwich morphology and chiral recognition capabilities. The electrochemical chiral recognition showed that d-His-ZIF-8@Au@ZIF-8 was the most efficient for the enantiomer of phenylalanine (Phe). This experiment presents a novel perspective for the fabrication of a chiral electrochemical sensing platform based on a solid sandwich chiral nanocomposite.

Implementation of a Core-Shell Design Approach for Constructing MOFs for CO2 Capture

Adsorption-based capture of CO₂ from flue gas and from air requires materials that have a high affinity for CO₂ and can resist water molecules that competitively bind to adsorption sites. Here, we present a core-shell metal-organic framework (MOF) design strategy where the core MOF is designed to selectively adsorb CO₂, and the shell MOF is designed to block H₂O diffusion into the core. To implement and test this strategy, we used the zirconium (Zr)-based UiO MOF platform because of its relative structural rigidity and chemical stability. Previously reported computational screening results were used to select optimal core and shell MOF compositions from a basis set of possible building blocks, and the target core-shell MOFs were prepared. Their compositions and structures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Multigas (CO₂, N₂, and H₂O) sorption data were collected both for the core-shell MOFs and for the core and shell MOFs individually. These data were compared to determine whether the core-shell MOF architecture improved the CO₂ capture performance under humid conditions. The combination of experimental and computational results demonstrated that adding a shell layer with high CO₂/H₂O diffusion selectivity can significantly reduce the effect of water on CO₂ uptake.

Epitaxial growth of highly symmetrical branched noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures with efficient plasmon-induced hot-electron transfer

Epitaxial growth is one of the most commonly used strategies to precisely tailor heterostructures with well-defined compositions, morphologies, crystal phases, and interfaces for various applications. However, as epitaxial growth requires a small interfacial lattice mismatch between the components, it remains a challenge for the epitaxial synthesis of heterostructures constructed by materials with large lattice mismatch and/or different chemical bonding, especially the noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures. Here, we develop a noble metal-seeded epitaxial growth strategy to prepare highly symmetrical noble metal-semiconductor branched heterostructures with desired spatial configurations, i.e., twenty CdS (or CdSe) nanorods epitaxially grown on twenty exposed (111) facets of Ag icosahedral nanocrystal, albeit a large lattice mismatch (more than 40%). Importantly, a high quantum yield (QY) of plasmon-induced hot-electron transferred from Ag to CdS was observed in epitaxial Ag-CdS icosapods (18.1%). This work demonstrates that epitaxial growth can be achieved in heterostructures composed of materials with large lattice mismatches. The constructed epitaxial noble metal-semiconductor interfaces could be an ideal platform for investigating the role of interfaces in various physicochemical processes.

Highly Efficient Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde to Cinnamyl Alcohol over CoRe/TiO2 Catalyst

Allylic alcohols typically produced through selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes are important intermediates in fine chemical industry, but it is still a challenge to achieve its high selectivity transformation. Herein, we report a series of TiO₂-supported CoRe bimetallic catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen donor. The resultant catalyst with the optimized Co/Re ratio of 1:1 can achieve an exceptional COL selectivity of 89% with a CAL conversion of 99% under mild conditions of 140 °C for 4 h, and the catalyst can be reused four times without loss of activity. Meanwhile, the Co₁Re₁/TiO₂/FA system was efficient for the selective hydrogenation of various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols. The presence of ReO_x on the Co₁Re₁/TiO₂ catalyst surface was advantageous to the adsorption of C=O, and the ultrafine Co nanoparticles provided abundant hydrogenation active sites for the selective hydrogenation. Moreover, FA as a hydrogen donor improved the selectivity to α,β-unsaturated alcohols.

Series of Dual Functional Two-Dimensional RE-OFs for Nitrophenol Reduction and Dye Separation

The rational design and preparation of stable and multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with excellent catalysis and adsorption properties are desirable but are great challenges. The nitrophenol (NP) reduction to aminophenols (APs) by using the catalyst Pd@MOFs is an effective strategy, which has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Here, we report four stable isostructural two-dimensional (2D) rare earth metal-organic frameworks [RE₄(AAPA)₆(DMA)₂ (H₂O)₄][DMA]₃[H₂O]₈ (namely LCUH-101, RE = Eu, Gd, Tb, Y; AAPA^2- = 5-[(anthracen-9-yl-methyl)-amino]-1,3-isophthalate), which feature a 2D layer structure with sql topology of point symbol {4⁴·6²} and exhibit excellent chemical stability and thermostability. The as-synthesized Pd@LCUH-101 was utilized for the catalytic reduction of 2/3/4-nitrophenol, which indicates high catalytic activity and recyclability attributed to the synergistic effect between Pd nanoparticles and the 2D layered structure. Of note, the turnover frequency (TOF), the reaction rate constant (k), and the activation energy (E_a) of Pd@LCUH-101 (Eu) in the reduction of 4-NP, respectively, are 1.09 s^-1, 2.17 min^-1, and 50.2 kJ·mol^-1, which show that it has superior catalytic activity. Remarkably, LCUH-101 (Eu, Gd, Tb, and Y) are multifunctional MOFs that can effectively absorb and separate mixed dyes. The appropriate interlayer spacing enables them to efficiently adsorb methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution, with adsorption capacities of 0.97 and 0.41 g·g^-1, respectively, which is one of the highest values among those of the reported MOF-based adsorbers. Meanwhile, LCUH-101 (Eu) can be used for the separation of the dye mixture MB/MO and RhB/MO, and the excellent reusability enables LCUH-101 (Eu) to be used as chromatographic column filters to quickly separate and recover dyes. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy for the exploitation of stable and efficient catalysts for NP reduction and adsorbents for dyes.

Interfacial Coordinational Bond Triggered Photoreduction Membrane for Continuous Light-Driven Precious Metals Recovery

Chemical/electric energy-driven processes dominate the traditional precious metal (PM) recovery market. The renewable energy-driven selective PM recycling approach crucial for carbon neutrality is under exploration. Herein, via an interfacial structure engineering approach, coordinational-active pyridine groups are covalently integrated onto the photoactive semiconductor SnS₂ surface to construct Py-SnS₂. Triggered by the preferred coordinational binding force between PMs and pyridine groups, together with the photoreduction capability of SnS₂, Py-SnS₂ shows significantly enhanced selective PM-capturing performance toward Au³⁺, Pd⁴⁺, and Pt⁴⁺ with recycling capacity up to 1769.84, 1103.72, and 617.61 mg/g for Au³⁺, Pd⁴⁺, and Pt⁴⁺, respectively. Further integrating the Py-SnS₂ membrane into a homemade light-driven flow cell, 96.3% recovery efficiency was achieved for continuous Au recycling from a computer processing unit (CPU) leachate. This study reported a novel strategy to fabricate coordinational bonds triggered photoreductive membranes for continuous PM recovery, which could be expanded to other photocatalysts for broad environmental applications.

Computational design of the novel building blocks for the metal-organic frameworks based on the organic ligand protected Cu4 cluster

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are tunable porous network compounds composed of inorganic nodes bound by various organic linkers. Here we report the density functional theory (DFT) study of the MOF novel building blocks made of the Cu4 clusters protected by four organic ligands having two phenyl rings and terminated either with Cl or Br atom (precursors 1 and 2, respectively). The research was performed both in the gas phase and with the implicit effects of acetonitrile included, with two functionals, B3LYP and PBE, both with and without the second-order dispersion correction. We analyzed the structural features of the precursors 1 and 2, their electronic structures, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) distribution, and global reactivity parameters (GRPs). Both functionals resulted in the singlets of the precursors 1 and 2 as the most stable species. The precursor structures optimized with the hybrid functional were found to be quite similar for both halogens, both containing somewhat distorted from planarity Cu4 cluster, with the outer phenyls of the ligands rotated relative to the inner phenyls. With both halogens and both DFT approaches, the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) of the precursors 1 and 2 were shown to have quite similar compositions. The change of the substituent from Br to Cl was found to cause slight stabilizations or destabilizations of the HOMOs and LUMOs. The central parts and especially the inner phenyl ring parts of the precursors 1 and 2 were suggested to play a role of nucleophile in various chemical reactions due to the significant accumulation of negative electrostatic potential. Also, weak intermolecular interactions might exist between the ligands of neighboring precursor molecules. Finally, with both substituents the precursors 1 and 2 should be relatively unreactive and demonstrate thermodynamic stability. Further, the precursors 1 and 2 should be quite stable in oxidation reactions and more active in reduction processes. Generally, the substituent nature was shown not to affect significantly the reactivity of the precursors 1 and 2, as well as their other properties.

Repair of missing linker defects in UiO-66 by a "molecular patch" boosting the 1-hexene hydroformylation reaction

Fabrication of MOFs with missing linker defects has become a common means to improve catalytic performances. However, the stability of the defects deserves to be investigated first. In this work, we found that 3-phenylpropionaldehyde (3-PPA) could coordinate with the missing linker defects of UiO-66, which highlighted the instability of the missing linker defects. 3-PPA acted as a molecular patch for the modification of the Rh/UiO-66 catalyst, which repaired the open Zr₆ sites and resulted in a remarkable improvement of aldehyde selectivity (from 50.0% to 89.6%) in 1-hexene hydroformylation.

Creating and Stabilizing an Oxidized Pd Surface under Reductive Conditions for Photocatalytic Hydrogenation of Aromatic Carbonyls

Photocatalysis provides an eco-friendly route for the hydrogenation of aromatic carbonyls to O-free aromatics, which is an important refining process in the chemical industry that is generally carried out under high pressure of hydrogen at elevated temperatures. However, aromatic carbonyls are often only partially hydrogenated to alcohols, which readily desorbs and are hardly further deoxygenated under ambient conditions. Here, we show that by constructing an oxide surface over the Pd cocatalyst supported on graphitic carbon nitride, an alternative hydrogenation path of aromatic carbonyls becomes available via a step-wise acetalization and hydrogenation, thus allowing efficient and selective production of O-free aromatics. The PdO surface allows for optimum adsorption of reactants and intermediates and rapid abstraction of hydrogen from the alcohol donor, favoring fast acetalization of the carbonyls and their consecutive hydrogenation to O-free hydrocarbons. The photocatalytic hydrogenation of benzaldehyde into toluene shows a high selectivity of >90% and a quantum efficiency of ∼10.2% under 410 nm irradiation. By adding trace amounts of HCl to the reaction solution, the PdO surface remains stable and active for long-term operation at high concentrations, offering perspective for practical applications.

Designing In Situ Grown Ternary Oxide/2D Ni-BDC MOF Nanocomposites on Nickel Foam as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Water Splitting

The security of future energy, hydrogen, is subject to designing high-performance, stable, and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HERs and OERs), for the realization of efficient overall water splitting. Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) introduce a large family of materials with versatile chemical and structural features for a variety of applications, such as supercapacitors, gas storage, and water splitting. Herein, a series of nanocomposites based on NCM/Ni-BDC@NF (N=Ni, C=Co, M:F=Fe, C=Cu, and Z=Zn, BDC: benzene dicarboxylic acid, NF: nickel foam) were directly developed on NF using a facile yet scalable solvothermal method. After coupling, the electronic structure of metallic atoms was well-modulated. Based on the XPS results, for the NCF/Ni-BDC, cationic atoms shifted to higher oxidation states, favorable for the OER. Conversely, for the NCZ/Ni-BDC and NCC/Ni-BDC nanocomposites, cationic atoms shifted to lower oxidation states, advantageous for the HER. The as-prepared NCF/Ni-BDC demonstrated prominent OER performance, requiring only 1.35 and 1.68 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode to afford 10 and 50 mA cm-2 current densities, respectively. On the cathodic side, NCZ/Ni-BDC exhibited the best HER activity with an overpotential of 170 and 350 mV to generate 10 and 50 mA cm-2, respectively, under 1.0 M KOH medium. In a two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer, the assembled NCZ/Ni-BDC (cathode) ∥ NCF/Ni-BDC (anode) couple demanded a cell voltage of only 1.58 V to produce 10 mA cm-2. The stability of NCF/Ni-BDC toward OER was also exemplary, experiencing a continuous operation at 10, 20, and 50 mA cm-2 for nearly 45 h. Surprisingly, the overpotential after OER stability at 50 mA cm-2 dropped drastically from 450 to 200 mV. Finally, the faradaic efficiencies for the overall water splitting revealed the respective values of 100 and 85% for the H2 and O2 production at a constant current density of 20 mA cm-2.

Site-specific anisotropic assembly of amorphous mesoporous subunits on crystalline metal-organic framework

As an important branch of anisotropic nanohybrids (ANHs) with multiple surfaces and functions, the porous ANHs (p-ANHs) have attracted extensive attentions because of the unique characteristics of high surface area, tunable pore structures and controllable framework compositions, etc. However, due to the large surface-chemistry and lattice mismatches between the crystalline and amorphous porous nanomaterials, the site-specific anisotropic assembly of amorphous subunits on crystalline host is challenging. Here, we report a selective occupation strategy to achieve site-specific anisotropic growth of amorphous mesoporous subunits on crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF). The amorphous polydopamine (mPDA) building blocks can be controllably grown on the {100} (type 1) or {110} (type 2) facets of crystalline ZIF-8 to form the binary super-structured p-ANHs. Based on the secondary epitaxial growth of tertiary MOF building blocks on type 1 and 2 nanostructures, the ternary p-ANHs with controllable compositions and architectures are also rationally synthesized (type 3 and 4). These intricate and unprecedented superstructures provide a good platform for the construction of nanocomposites with multiple functionalities and understanding of the structure-property-function relationships.

Locking Effect in Metal@MOF with Superior Stability for Highly Chemoselective Catalysis

Ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (NPs) show high catalytic activity in heterogeneous catalysis but are prone to reunion and loss during the catalytic process, resulting in low chemoselectivity and poor efficiency. Herein, a locking effect strategy is proposed to synthesize high-loading and ultrafine metal NPs in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient chemoselective catalysis with high stability. Briefly, the MOF ZIF-90 with aldehyde groups cooperating with diamine chains via aldimine condensation was interlocked, which was employed to confine in situ formation of Au NPs, denoted as Au@L-ZIF-90. The optimized Au@L_a-ZIF-90 has highly dispersed Au NPs (2.60 ± 0.81 nm) with a loading amount around 22 wt % and shows a great performance toward 3-aminophenylacetylene (3-APA) from the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene (3-NPA) with a high yield (99%) and excellent durability (over 20 cycles), far superior to contrast catalysts without chains locking and other reported catalysts. In addition, experimental characterization and systematic density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the locked MOF modulates the charge of Au nanoparticles, making them highly specific for nitro group hydrogenation to obtain 3-APA with high selectivity (99%). Furthermore, this locking effect strategy is also applicable to other metal nanoparticles confined in a variety of MOFs, and all of these catalysts locked with chains show great selectivity (≥90%) of 3-APA. The proposed strategy in this work provides a novel and universal method for precise control of the inherent activity of accessible metal nanoparticles with a programmable MOF microenvironment toward highly specific catalysis.

Monitoring the Activation of Open Metal Sites in [FexM3-x(μ3-O)] Cluster-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks by Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction

While trinuclear [FexM3-x(μ3-O)] cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have found wide applications in gas storage and catalysis, it is still challenging to identify the structure of open metal sites obtained through proper activations and understand their influence on the adsorption and catalytic properties. Herein, we use in situ variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction to monitor the structural evolution of [FexM3-x(μ3-O)]-based MOFs (PCN-250, M = Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Mg2+) upon thermal activation and provide the snapshots of metal sites at different temperatures. The exposure of open Fe3+ sites was observed along with the transformation of Fe3+ coordination geometries from octahedron to square pyramid. Furthermore, the effect of divalent metals in heterometallic PCN-250 was studied for the purpose of reducing the activation temperature and increasing the number of open metal sites. The metal site structures were corroborated by X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy. These results will not only guide the pretreatment of [FexM3-x(μ3-O)]-based MOFs but also corroborate spectral and computational studies on these materials.

Inserting Single-Atom Zn by Tannic Acid Confinement To Regulate the Selectivity of Pd Nanocatalysts for Hydrogenation Reactions

Precisely controlling the selectivity of nanocatalysts has always been a hot topic in heterogeneous catalysis but remains difficult owing to their complex and inhomogeneous catalytic sites. Herein, an effective strategy to regulate the chemoselectivity of Pd nanocatalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions by inserting single-atom Zn into Pd nanoparticles is reported. Taking advantage of the tannic acid coating-confinement strategy, small-sized Pd nanoparticles with inserted single-atom Zn are obtained on the O-doped carbon-coated alumina. Compared with the pure Pd nanocatalyst, the Pd nanocatalyst with single-atom Zn insertion exhibits prominent selectivity for the hydrogenation of p-iodonitrobenzene to afford the hydrodeiodination product instead of nitro hydrogenation ones. Further computational studies reveal that the single-atom Zn on Pd nanoparticles strengthens the adsorption of the nitro group to avoid its reduction and increases the d-band center of Pd atoms to facilitate the reduction of the iodo group, which leads to enhanced selectivity. This work provides new guidelines to tune the selectivity of nanocatalysts with guest single-atom sites.

Strategies for improving the photocatalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks for CO2 reduction: A review

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction is an appealing strategy for mitigating the environmental effects of greenhouse gases while simultaneously producing valuable carbon-neutral fuels. Numerous attempts have been made to produce effective and efficient photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction. In contrast, the selection of competitive catalysts continues to be a substantial hindrance and a considerable difficulty in the development of photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. It is vital to emphasize different techniques for building effective photocatalysts to improve CO₂ reduction performance in order to achieve a long-term sustainability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recently emerging as a new type of photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction due to their excellent CO₂ adsorption capability and unique structural characteristics. This review examines the most recent breakthroughs in various techniques for modifying MOFs in order to improve their efficiency of photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. The advantages of MOFs using as photocatalysts are summarized, followed by different methods for enhancing their effectiveness for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction via partial ion exchange of metal clusters, design of bimetal clusters, the modification of organic linkers, and the embedding of metal complexes. For integrating MOFs with semiconductors, metallic nanoparticles (NPs), and other materials, a number of different approaches have been also reviewed. The final section of this review discusses the existing challenges and future prospects of MOFs as photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction. Hopefully, this review can stimulate intensive research on the rational design and development of more effective MOF-based photocatalysts for visible-light driven CO₂ conversion.

Bimetal-organic framework/GOx-based hydrogel dressings with antibacterial and inflammatory modulation for wound healing

Antibiotic resistance of bacteria and persistent inflammation are critical challenges in treating bacteria infected wounds. Thus, it is urgent to develop versatile wound dressings that possess high-efficiency antibacterial performance and inflammation regulation. Herein, we have successfully constructed a hydrogel wound dressing consisting of the bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) loaded with glucose oxidase (GOx), termed as MOF(Fe-Cu)/GOx-polyacrylamide (PAM) gel. Hydrogel dressings can provide an efficient cascade-catalyzed system to accelerate wound healing via synergistic antibacterial and inflammatory modulation. Importantly, the catalytic property of the bimetallic MOF(Fe-Cu) is about five times that of the monometallic MOF(Fe). Based on such a cascade-catalyzed system, the abundant gluconic acid and H₂O₂ can be continuously produced by decomposing glucose via GOx. Such gluconic acid can notably improve the peroxidase performance of MOF(Fe-Cu), which can further efficiently decompose H₂O₂ to achieve the antibacterial. Meanwhile, MOF (Fe Cu)/GOx PAM gel can induce macrophages to change into an M2 phenotype, which can accelerate the transformation of the wound microenvironment to a remodeling state and then accelerate angiogenesis and neurogenesis. This work provides multifunctional bioactive materials for accelerating wound healing and will have great potential in clinical applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Antibiotic resistance and persistent inflammation are still the critical reasons for the slow healing of bacteria infected wounds. Herein, we prepared a hydrogel wound dressing composed of bimetallic metal organic framework (MOF) loaded with glucose oxidase (GOx). The catalytic activity of the bimetallic MOF(Fe-Cu) is significantly enhanced due to doping of copper, which makes it possess outstanding antibacterial ability based on cascade catalysis. Such dressing can promote the remodeling of inflammatory immunity by regulating macrophage polarization to suppress over-reactive inflammation, further accelerating the healing of bacteria-infected wounds. This study provides an innovative and effective way to accelerate the healing of bacteria infected wound by combining bacteria killing and inflammation modulation.

A General and Scalable Approach to Sulfur-Doped Mono-/Bi-/Trimetallic Nanoparticles Confined in Mesoporous Carbon

Metal nanoparticles confined in porous carbon materials have been widely used in various heterogeneous catalytic processes due to their enhanced activity and stability. However, fabrication of such catalysts in a facile and scalable way remains challenging. Herein, we report a general and scalable thiol-assisted strategy to synthesize sulfur-doped mono-/bi-/trimetallic nanoparticles confined in mesoporous carbon (S-M@MC, M = Pt, Pd, Rh, Co, Zn, etc.), involving only two synthetic steps, i.e., a hydrothermal process and pyrolysis. The strategy is based on coordination chemistry and hydro-phobic interaction that the metal precursors coordinated with the hydrophobic thiol ligands are located at the hydrophobic core of micelles, in situ confined in the hydrothermally prepared mesostructured polymer, and then converted into sulfur-doped metal nanoparticles confined in MC after pyrolysis. It is demonstrated that the S-PtCo@MC exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and improved durability toward acidic hydrogen evolution reaction due to the confinement effect and S-doping.

Self-Supporting Co/CeO2 Heterostructures for Ampere-Level Current Density Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Remodeling the active surface through fabricating heterostructures can substantially enhance alkaline water electrolysis driven by renewable electrical energy. However, there are still great challenges in the synthesis of highly reactive and robust heterostructures to achieve both ampere-level current density hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report a new Co/CeO₂ heterojunction self-supported electrode for sustainable overall water splitting. The self-supporting Co/CeO₂ heterostructures required only low overpotentials of 31.9 ± 2.2, 253.3 ± 2.7, and 316.7 ± 3 mV for HER and 214.1 ± 1.4, 362.3 ± 1.9, and 400.3 ± 3.7 mV for OER at 0.01, 0.5, and 1.0 A·cm^-2, respectively, being one of the best Co-based bifunctional electrodes. Electrolyzer constructed from this electrode acting as an anode and cathode merely required cell voltages of 1.92 ± 0.02 V at 1.0 A·cm^-2 for overall water splitting. Multiple characterization techniques combined with density functional theory calculations disclosed the different active sites on the anode and cathode, and the charge redistributions on the heterointerfaces that can optimize the adsorption of H and oxygen-containing intermediates, respectively. This study presents the tremendous prospective of self-supporting heterostructures for effective and economical overall water splitting.

A Heterocatalytic Metal-Organic Framework to Stimulate Dispersal and Macrophage Combat with Infectious Biofilms

Eradication of infectious biofilms is becoming increasingly difficult due to the growing number of antibiotic-resistant strains. This necessitates development of nonantibiotic-based, antimicrobial approaches. To this end, we designed a heterocatalytic metal-organic framework composed of zirconium 1,4-dicarboxybenzene (UiO-66) with immobilized Pt nanoparticles (Pt-NP/UiO-66). Pt-NP/UiO-66 enhanced singlet-oxygen generation compared with Pt nanoparticles or UiO-66, particularly in an acidic environment. Singlet-oxygen generation degraded phosphodiester bonds present in eDNA gluing biofilms together and therewith dispersed biofilms. Remaining biofilms possessed a more open structure. Concurrently, Pt-NP/UiO-66 stimulated macrophages to adapt a more M1-like, "fighting" phenotype, moving faster toward their target bacteria and showing increased bacterial killing. As a combined effect of biofilm dispersal and macrophage polarization, a subcutaneous Staphylococcus aureus biofilm in mice was more readily eradicated by Pt-NP/UiO-66 than by Pt nanoparticles or UiO-66. Therewith, heterocatalytic Pt-NP/UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks constitute a nonantibiotic-based strategy to weaken protective matrices and disperse infectious biofilms, while strengthening macrophages in bacterial killing.

An ultrasensitive dual-signal ratio electrochemical aptamer biosensor for the detection of HER2

Electrochemical ratiometric biosensors have received attention from researchers because of their self-calibration capability, which can improve the accuracy of detection. In the present study, a ratiometric dual signal electrochemical aptamer biosensor based on ZIF-67 @polydopamine (PDA) nanocomposite and Cu/UiO-66 @ 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) nanocomposite was fabricated for the detection of breast cancer biomarker- human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). PDA was chosen as the electroactive material with electrochemical redox activity and ZIF-67 with a high specific surface area, forming the ZIF-67 @PDA+Apt as the nanoprobe for capturing HER2 in this paper. Cu/UiO-66 is a bimetallic compound with high stability, specific surface area, and strong adsorption onto aptamer chains, and the Cu/UiO-66 @TMB+Apt nanocomposite was used as a probe for signal labeling. In the presence of HER2, the capture of HER2 by the ZIF-67 @PDA+Apt probe results in a weakening of the conductivity of the electrode, however, by attenuating the electrochemical signal from the PDA, altering the probe-Cu/UiO-66 @TMB+Apt signaling will result in the enhancement of the TMB electrochemical signal. With a sensitive detection of HER2 biomarkers in as little as 30 min with the detection range of 0.75-40 pg/mL and a limit of detection as low as 44.8 fg/mL. Dual signal ratio biosensors have a low limit of detection, short detection time, which can accurately detect targets in complex biological samples, which has important theoretical importance.

Iron-based and BRD4-downregulated strategy for amplified ferroptosis based on pH-sensitive/NIR-II-boosted nano-matchbox

Ferroptosis (FPT), a novel form of programmed cell death, is characterized by overwhelming iron/reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxidation (LPO). However, the insufficiency of endogenous iron and ROS level limited the FPT therapeutic efficacy to a large extent. To overcome this obstacle, the bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD₄)-inhibitor (+)-JQ1 (JQ1) and iron-supplement ferric ammonium citrate (FAC)-loaded gold nanorods (GNRs) are encapsulated into the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to form matchbox-like GNRs@JF/ZIF-8 for the amplified FPT therapy. The existence of matchbox (ZIF-8) is stable in physiologically neutral conditions but degradable in acidic environment, which could prevent the loaded agents from prematurely reacting. Moreover, GNRs as the drug-carriers induce the photothermal therapy (PTT) effect under the irradiation of near-infrared II (NIR-II) light owing to the absorption by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), while the hyperthermia also boosts the JQ1 and FAC releasing in the tumor microenvironment (TME). On one hand, the FAC-induced Fenton/Fenton-like reactions in TME can simultaneously generate iron (Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺) and ROS to initiate the FPT treatment by LPO elevation. On the other hand, JQ1 as a small molecule inhibitor of BRD₄ protein can amplify FPT through downregulating the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), thus inhibiting the ROS elimination and leading to the LPO accumulation. Both in vitro and in vivo studies reveal that this pH-sensitive nano-matchbox achieves obvious suppression of tumor growth with good biosafety and biocompatibility. As a result, our study points out a PTT combined iron-based/BRD₄-downregulated strategy for amplified ferrotherapy which also opens the door of future exploitation of ferrotherapy systems.

Hybrid Lamellar Superlattices with Monoatomic Platinum Layers and Programmable Organic Ligands

Compared with layered materials such as graphite and transitional metal dichalcogenides with highly anisotropic in-plane covalent bonds, freestanding metallic two-dimensional (2D) films with atomic thickness are intrinsically more difficult to achieve. The omnidirectional nature of typical metallic bonds prevents the formation of highly anisotropic atomically thin metallic layers. Herein, we report a ligand regulation strategy to stabilize monoatomic platinum layers by forming a unique lamellar superlattice structure with self-assembled organic ligand layers. We show that the interlayer spacings and coordination environments could be systematically tuned by varying programmable molecular ligands with the designed length and structural motifs, which further modulate the electronic states and catalytic performances. The strategy can be extended for preparing lamellar superlattices with monoatomic metallic layers from silver and gold. Such general and delicate synthetic control provides an exciting model system for systematic investigation of the intriguing structure-property correlation of monoatomic layers and promises a molecular design pathway for heterogeneous catalysts.

Catalytic Oxidation of Benzoins by Hydrogen Peroxide on Nanosized HKUST-1: Influence of Substituents on the Reaction Rates and DFT Modeling of the Reaction Path

In this research, the oxidation of a series of benzoins, R-C(=O)-CH(OH)-R, where R = phenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-bromophenyl, and 2-naphthyl, by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of nanostructured HKUST-1 (suspension in acetonitrile/water mixture) was studied. The respective benzoic acids were the only products of the reactions. The initial average reaction rates were experimentally determined at different concentrations of benzoin, H₂O₂ and an effective concentration of HKUST-1. The sorption of the isotherms of benzoin, dimethoxybenzoin and benzoic acid on HKUST-1, as well as their sorption kinetic curves, were measured. The increase in H₂O₂ concentration expectedly led to an acceleration of the reaction. The dependencies of the benzoin oxidation rates on the concentrations of both benzoin and HKUST-1 passed through the maxima. This finding could be explained by a counterplay between the increasing reaction rate and increasing benzoin sorption on the catalyst with the increase in the concentration. The electronic effect of the substituent in benzoin had a significant influence on the reaction rate, while no relation between the size of the substrate molecule and the rate of its oxidation was found. It was confirmed by DFT modeling that the reaction could pass through the Baeyer-Villiger mechanism, involving an attack by the HOO^- anion on the C atom of the activated C=O group.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of TEMPO-Mediated Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols via Redox-Active Metal-Organic Framework Nodes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are outstanding platforms for heterogeneous catalysis due to their tunable pore size, huge surface area, large porosity, and potential active sites. The design and synthesis of MOF/organocatalyst co-catalytic systems have attracted considerable interest owing to their high catalytic activity, low toxicity, and mild reaction conditions. Herein, we reported the synthesis of a bifunctional TEMPO-IsoNTA organocatalyst featuring a pyridyl group as an anchoring site and a TEMPO radical as a catalytic active site. By using the topologically isomorphic structures of MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) as co-catalysts, these MOF/TEMPO-IsoNTA systems enable the efficient aerobic oxidation of various alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes or ketones under mild conditions. Notably, the MIL-101(Fe)/TEMPO-IsoNTA system exhibits superior catalytic activity, thanks to their redox-active Fe^III-oxo nodes, which facilitate the regeneration of TEMPO-IsoNTA. Our research not only solves the problem of potential heavy metal contamination in the TEMPO-based homogeneous catalytic system, but also enriches the understanding of synergism of MOFs/organocatalysts.

Quasi-Cu-MOFs: highly improved water stability and electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 reduction among pristine 3D MOFs

QHKUST-1 calcined at 250 °C for 1 h maintains the perfect octahedral morphology of HKUST-1 and exhibits superior moisture stability and enhanced electrocatalytic activity compared to the original water-sensitive HKUST-1.

Molecular Compartments Created in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Overall Conversion

We report the construction of molecular compartments by the growth of narrow-band semiconductor nanoparticles, tungsten oxide and its hydrate, in the mesopores of a metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-100-Fe. The location of these nanoparticles in pores and their spatial arrangement across the MOF crystal are unveiled by powder X-ray diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering, respectively. Such a composition with pore-level precision leads to efficient overall conversion of gas-phase CO₂ and H₂O to CO, CH₄, and H₂O₂ under visible light. When WO₃·H₂O nanoparticles are positioned in 2.5 nm mesopores with 24 wt %, the resulting composite, namely, 24%-WO₃·H₂O-in-MIL-100-Fe, exhibits a CO₂ reduction rate of 0.49 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 beyond 420 nm and an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.5% at 420 nm. These performances stand as new benchmarks for visible-light-driven CO₂ overall conversion. In addition to the size and location of semiconductor nanoparticles, the coordinated water species in the crystal are found critical for high catalytic activity, an aspect usually overlooked.

Ultrathin trimetallic metal-organic framework nanosheets for accelerating bacteria-infected wound healing

Bacteria-infected wounds are commonly regarded as a hidden threat to human health that can create persistent infection and even bring about amputation or death. Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) with biomimetic enzyme activity have been used to reduce the huge harm caused by antibiotic resistance due to their massive active sites and ultralarge specific surface area. However, their therapeutic efficiency is unsatisfactory because of their relatively low catalytic activity and poor productivity. In this paper, we presented a simple and mild one-pot solution phase method for the large-scale synthesis of NiCoCu-based MOF nanosheets. The NiCoCu nanosheets (denoted as (Ni₂Co₁)_1-xCu_x) with controlled molar ratios have different morphologies and sizes. Specifically, the (Ni₂Co₁)_0.5Cu_0.5 nanosheets showed the best catalytic performance toward the reduction of H₂O₂ and H₂O₂ was efficiently catalyzed to generate toxic •OH in the presence of MOF nanosheets with peroxidase-like activity. (Ni₂Co₁)_0.5Cu_0.5 exhibited the best antibacterial activity against gram-positive Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Animal wound healing experiments demonstrate that ultrathin trimetallic nanosheets can effectively contribute to wound healing with excellent biocompatibility. This study reveals the immense potential of ultrathin trimetallic MOF nanosheets for clinical antibacterial therapy for future pragmatic clinical applications.
