Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic burdensome inflammatory skin disease with well-established cutaneous and systemic comorbidities and disease burden. AD particularly has profound impacts on sleep in individuals of all ages. Sleep disturbances (SDs) affect 6.2% of school-age children and 33-87.1% of adults with AD. This narrative review addresses the burden of SD in AD patients, as well as biological mechanisms of SD in AD, including biological clocks influencing sleep, inflammation, and behavior. Approaches for early detection, diagnosis, objective quantification, patient education, and management are reviewed. It is imperative to break the itch-scratch cycle to reduce SDs and improve quality of life in individuals with AD.

Abstract
Melatonin is a neuroendocrine hormone secreted by the pineal gland. The secretion of melatonin follows a circadian rhythm controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and its secretion is synchronized with the changes in light and dark periods in nature, with the highest secretion level at night. Melatonin is a critical hormone that coordinates external light stimulation and cellular responses of the body. It transmits information about the environmental light cycle, including the circadian and seasonal rhythms, to the relevant tissues and organs in the body, which, along with changes in its secretion level, ensures that its regulated functional activities are adapted in response to changes in the outside environment. Melatonin takes beneficial actions mainly through the interaction with specific membrane-bound receptors, termed MT1 and MT2. Melatonin also acts as a scavenger of free radicals via non-receptor-mediated mechanism. For more than half of acentury melatonin has been associated with vertebrate reproduction, especially in the context of seasonal breeding. Though modern humans show little remaining reproductive seasonality, the relationships between melatonin and human reproduction continue to attract extensive attention. Melatonin plays important roles in improving mitochondrial function, reducing the damage of free radicals, inducing oocyte maturation, increasing fertilization rate and promoting embryonic development, which improves the outcomes of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. The present article reviews the progress that has been made in our evolving understanding of the physiological role of melatonin in reproduction and its potential clinical applications in reproductive medicine.

Abstract
In recent years, the role played by melatonin on the gut microbiota has gained increasingly greater attention. Additionally, the gut microbiota has been proposed as an alternative source of melatonin, suggesting that this antioxidant indoleamine could act as a sort of messenger between the gut microbiota and the host. This review analyses the available scientific literature about possible mechanisms involved in this mediating role, highlighting its antioxidant effects and influence on this interaction. In addition, we also review the available knowledge on the effects of melatonin on gut microbiota composition, as well as its ability to alleviate dysbiosis related to sleep deprivation or chronodisruptive conditions. The melatonin-gut microbiota relationship has also been discussed in terms of its role in the development of different disorders, from inflammatory or metabolic disorders to psychiatric and neurological conditions, also considering oxidative stress and the reactive oxygen species-scavenging properties of melatonin as the main factors mediating this relationship.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Poor sleep is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. Berries are rich in micronutrients and antioxidants that may improve sleep quality and duration. We determined the association of berry consumption and sleep duration and sleep difficulty among adult participants in NHANES. METHODS We analyzed the diet of US adults aged ≥ 20 y using two non-consecutive 24 h recalls from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2018 (N = 29,217). Poor sleep quality was measured by sleep duration (short sleep duration: <7 h), long sleep (≥9 h), and reported sleep difficulty. The relative risk of poor sleep outcomes for berry consumers vs. nonconsumers was modelled using population weight-adjusted multivariable general logistic regression. RESULTS About 46% of participants reported inadequate sleep duration, and 27% reported sleep difficulties. Twenty-two percent reported consuming berries. Berry consumers had a 10-17% decreased risk of short sleep. The findings were consistent for specific berry types including strawberries and blueberries (p < 0.05). No significant associations with long sleep were found for total berries and any berry types. A decreased risk of sleep difficulties was found to be linked to blackberry consumption (adjusted OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.40-0.97; p = 0.036) but not for other berries. CONCLUSIONS US adult berry consumers had a decreased risk of reporting short sleep compared to nonconsumers. Berries are underconsumed foods in the US adult population, and increased berry consumption may improve sleep quality.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The unique requirements of shift work, such as sleeping and working at variable times, mean that current sleep hygiene guidelines may be inappropriate for shift workers. Current guidelines may also contradict fatigue management advice (e.g. advising against daytime napping). The present study utilized a Delphi methodology to determine expert opinion regarding the applicability of current guidelines for shift workers, the appropriateness of the term "sleep hygiene," and develop tailored guidelines for shift workers. METHODS The research team reviewed current guidelines and existing evidence to draft tailored guidelines. Seventeen individual guidelines, covering sleep scheduling, napping, sleep environment, bedtime routine, substances, light exposure, diet, and exercise were drafted. Experts from sleep, shift work, and occupational health fields (n = 155) were invited to review the draft guidelines using a Delphi methodology. In each round, experts voted on individual guidelines, with 70% agreement considered consensus. Where consensus was not reached, written feedback from experts was discussed and incorporated into subsequent iterations. RESULTS Of the experts invited, 68 (44%) agreed to participate, with 55 (35%) completing the third (final) round. Most experts (84%) agreed that tailored guidelines were required for shift workers. Consensus was reached on all guidelines after three rounds. One additional guideline (sleep inertia) and an introductory statement were developed, resulting in a final set of 18 individual guidelines, termed "healthy sleep practices for shift workers." CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to develop tailored sleep hygiene guidelines for shift workers. Future research should investigate the acceptability and effectiveness of these guidelines amongst shift workers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) mainly affects cognitive function, it is often accompanied by sleep disorders and psychobehavioral symptoms. These symptoms, including depression, agitation, and psychotic symptoms, are prominent hospitalization causes among patients with AD. Currently, relatively more research exists on light therapy for sleep disorders, while those on psychobehavioral symptoms are gradually increasing. However, no consensus exists on these results because of the vulnerability of light therapy to multiple factors, including light intensity and duration. Thus, further research investigating this aspect is warranted. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of light therapy in improving sleep disorders and psychobehavioural symptoms in patients with AD. METHODS In this meta-analysis, relevant literature was searched in Embase, the Clinical Trials Registry, Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library up to December 2022. Furthermore, a fixed-effects model was used for data analysis. RESULTS Fifteen randomized controlled trials involving 598 patients with AD were included. In the case of sleep disorders, our meta-analysis revealed that light therapy significantly improved sleep efficiency (MD = -2.42, 95% CI = -3.37 to -1.48, p < 0.00001), increased interdaily stability (MD = -0.04, 95% CI = -0.05 to -0.03, p < 0.00001), and reduced intradaily variability (MD = -0.07, 95% CI = -0.10 to -0.05, p < 0.00001). With respect to psychotic behavior, light therapy was found to alleviate depression (MD = -2.55, 95% CI = -2.98 to -2.12, p < 0.00001) as well as reduce agitation (MD = -3.97, 95% CI = -5.09 to -2.84, p < 0.00001) and caregiver burden (MD = -3.57, 95% CI = -5.28 to -1.87, p < 0.00001). CONCLUSION Light therapy leads to significant improvement in sleep and psychobehavioral symptoms and is associated with relatively fewer side effects in patients with AD, indicating its potential as a promising treatment option for AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Morphine is amongst the most effective analgesics available for the management of severe pain. However, prolonged morphine treatment leads to analgesic tolerance which limits its clinical usage. Previous studies have demonstrated that melatonin ameliorates morphine tolerance by reducing neuroinflammation. However, little is known about the relationship between Toll like receptor 2 (TLR2) and neuroinflammation in morphine tolerance. The aim of this study was to explore the role of TLR2 in morphine tolerance and its connections with melatonin and Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with morphine for 7 days and tail-flick latency test was performed to identify the induction of analgesic tolerance. The roles of TLR2 in microglia activation and morphine tolerance were assessed pharmacologically, and the possible interactions between melatonin, TLR2 and NLRP3 inflammasome were investigated. KEY RESULTS Morphine tolerance was accompanied by increased TLR2 expression and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in spinal cord. whereas melatonin level was down-regulated. Chronic melatonin administration resulted in a reduced TLR2 expression and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Moreover, the analgesic effect of morphine was partially restored. Inhibition of TLR2 suppressed the microglia and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, as well as restored the spinal melatonin level while attenuated the development of morphine tolerance. Furthermore, the inhibition of microglia activation ameliorated morphine tolerance via inhibiting TLR2-NLRP3 inflammasome signaling in spinal cord. CONCLUSION In this study, we directly demonstrate a TLR2-melatonin negative feedback loop regulating microglia and NLRP3 inflammasome activation during the development of morphine tolerance.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms (CRs) are 24-hour periodic oscillations governed by an endogenous circadian pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which organizes the physiology and behavior of organisms. Circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) is also indicative of the aging process. In mammals, melatonin is primarily synthesized in the pineal gland and participates in a variety of multifaceted intracellular signaling networks and has been shown to synchronize CRs. Endogenous melatonin synthesis and its release tend to decrease progressively with advancing age. Older individuals experience frequent CR disruption, which hastens the process of aging. A profound understanding of the relationship between CRs and aging has the potential to improve existing treatments and facilitate development of novel chronotherapies that target age-related disorders. This review article aims to examine the circadian regulatory mechanisms in which melatonin plays a key role in signaling. We describe the basic architecture of the molecular circadian clock and its functional decline with age in detail. Furthermore, we discuss the role of melatonin in regulation of the circadian pacemaker and redox homeostasis during aging. Moreover, we also discuss the protective effect of exogenous melatonin supplementation in age-dependent CR disruption, which sheds light on this pleiotropic molecule and how it can be used as an effective chronotherapeutic medicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, light therapy has been tried for the treatment of depression and sleep in pregnancy or postnatal period women, but the results have been inconclusive. This meta-analysis is the first to systematically review the effects of light therapy on depression and sleep disturbances in women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. METHODS We searched for randomized controlled studies in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Biomedical Database up to January 2023. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to assess the efficacy of the outcome indicators. RESULTS Eight studies were eventually included in the analysis. The results showed that light therapy was more effective than the placebo group in terms of depression (SMD = .34, CI = .08-.61) and sleep (SMD = .64,95%CI = .28-1.00). Subgroup analysis could not explain the significant heterogeneity. There were no serious adverse effects in either the light therapy or placebo groups. CONCLUSIONS Light therapy could be considered an effective treatment for depression and sleep disturbances in women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. However, future high-quality trials with larger sample sizes are still needed.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is an important neurophysiological condition that is intricately linked to general health, laying the basis for both physiological and psychological well-being. A thorough examination of sleep disorders and cardiovascular health demonstrates their deep relationship, emphasizing the numerous diagnostic tools and treatment techniques available. Aim This study aims to examine the impact, mechanisms, diagnostic techniques, treatment strategies, implications, and healthcare interventions of the sleep-cardiovascular connection, to better understand the relationship between sleep disorders and cardiovascular health. Methods The paper reviews key studies conducted from 2015-till date, investigating the impact of sleep disorders on the cardiovascular system. It looked into data relating to cardiovascular outcomes based on the degree of sleep disorders, considered potential confounding factors, and addressed current research constraints. Results The findings highlight a strong link between sleep problems and poor cardiovascular outcomes. Emerging diagnostic tools, such as enhanced sleep-related technology and biomarkers, open up new avenues for determining the impact of sleep disturbances on cardiovascular health. In addition, the research discusses several treatment options, ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy to pharmaceutical therapies, and their potential benefits in addressing sleep-related cardiovascular risks. Conclusion The complex association between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular health emphasizes the need to recognize sleep as a critical component of overall well-being. Thus collaboration among medical disciplines, as well as individualized therapies, are critical to improving patient care. Moreover, Understanding and managing the consequences of sleep problems on cardiovascular health can lead to more effective interventions, better outcomes, and improved public health as research advances.

Abstract
Background Acute ischemic stroke can cause sleep disturbances. These complaints involve various factors, such as disturbances of the hormone cortisol and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte-Ratio (NLR) that can cause increasing severity levels in acute ischemic stroke patients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between cortisol levels and NLR with severity levels and sleep disturbances in acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods A cross-sectional analytic observational study was conducted on acute ischemic stroke patients during Agustus - December 2022. Examine cortisol levels using the ELISA method, NLR from blood test, asses severity levels using the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and The Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index (PSQI) is used as a measure for the initial screening of sleep disturbances-statistical analysis using Spearman correlation. Results Total study subjects were 48 patients, with the majority 62.5% women; the mean age of study subjects was above 60 years (56.3%), and the most common type of stroke was large artery atherosclerotic stroke (77.1%), the highest NIHSS score was in the moderate category (85.4%), the most common risk factor is hypertension (64.4%), and basal ganglia area is the most common ischemic stroke location (52.1%). There was a positive correlation between cortisol levels with NIHSS (r=0.874; p-value <0.001), NLR with sleep disturbances (r=0.829; p-value<0.001), NLR with NIHSS (r=0.893; p-value<0.001), and NIHSS with PSQI (r=0.836; p-value<0.001). Conclusion There were a positive correlation between cortisol level, NLR level, and NIHSS score with sleep quality disturbances based on PSQI in acute ischemic stroke patients.

Abstract
Understanding sleep patterns and behaviors of athletes is essential for developing targeted sleep-based interventions for implementation in practice. However, more than double the number of sleep studies have examined male athletes compared with female athletes, making the current understanding of sleep patterns, behaviors, and interventions among athletes disproportionately indicative of men. Consequently, this review demonstrates the need for more female-specific sleep data among athlete populations due to research inattention and sex-related differences. Specifically, this review identifies variations in sleep patterns and behaviors between male and female athletes, as well as physiological and lifestyle factors that potentially affect sleep patterns and behaviors across the lifespan, specifically in female athletes. In this regard, evidence suggests some female athletes experience longer sleep durations and better objective sleep quality, but similar or worse subjective sleep quality compared with male athletes. Additionally, scheduling training in the morning or throughout the day may benefit sleep in some female athletes. Considering sleep disorders, women may be at greater risk for insomnia and restless legs syndrome compared with men, which may be attributed to pregnancy, as well as a higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms, iron deficiency without anemia, and use of psychotropic medication among women. Finally, the menstrual cycle, menstrual disorders, oral contraceptive use, and the postpartum period have been shown to exert detrimental effects on sleep patterns and behaviors and should theoretically be considered when monitoring and managing sleep in female athletes.

Abstract
This study investigated associations between weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 15,837 participants from the 7th (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We categorized WCUS durations into four groups: none (≤ 0 h [h]), short (> 0 h, ≤ 1 h), medium (> 1 h, ≤ 2 h), and long (> 2 h), and performed complex samples logistic regression and likelihood ratio χ2 test. The study found significant associations in women for the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) index and three EQ-5D subdomains (self-care, usual activities, and anxiety/depression) with the WCUS durations, but no significant association in men. Compared to the non-WCUS, the short or medium WCUS was positively associated with the EQ-5D index and EQ-5D subdomains (usual activities and anxiety/depression) in women, while the long WCUS significantly reduced the quality of life in the self-care domain. In an additional subgroup analysis by age, middle-aged and elderly women had a more noticeable effect of WCUS on HRQoL than young women, and the short or medium WCUS improved HRQoL in middle-aged and elderly women in general. Therefore, we recommend appropriate WCUS durations to improve HRQoL, considering both gender and age.

Abstract
Childhood obesity has become a worldwide epidemic in the 21st century. Its treatment is challenging and often ineffective, among others due to complex, often not obvious causes. Awareness of the existence and meaning of psychosocial and environmental risk factors seems to be an essential element in the prevention and treatment of obesity and its complications, especially arterial hypertension. In this review, we will discuss the role of that risk factors linking obesity and increased cardiovascular disorders including the role of nutritional factors (including the role of unhealthy diet, inadequate hydration), unhealthy behaviors (e.g. smoking, alcohol and drugs, sedentary behavior, low physical activity, disrupted circadian rhythms, sleep disorders, screen exposure), unfavorable social factors (such as dysfunctional family, bullying, chronic stress, mood disorders, depression, urbanization, noise, and environmental pollution), and finally differences in cardiovascular risk in girls and boys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The medical community is beginning to recognize that retinitis pigmentosa (RP), due to its disabling progression, eventually leads to a reduction in the patient´s quality of life, a direct economic impact, and an increase in the burden on the health care system. There is no curative treatment for the origin of the disease, and most of the current interventions fail in reducing the associated negative psychological states, such as anxiety and depression, which lead to increased variability of vision and pose a continuous threat to the patient's independence. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to assess the effect of oral melatonin (OM) administration alone and combined with short-wavelength light (SWL)-blocking filters on patients with RP and test their effectiveness in improving the level of stress and sleep problems in many of these patients. METHODS We have developed a low-cost therapy protocol for patients with RP with sleep disorders and negative psychological stress. Patients will be randomized to receive a combined intervention with SWL-blocking filters and OM, SWL-blocking filters alone, or OM alone. There will also be a nonintervention arm as a control group. This study will be conducted across 2 retinal units in patients with RP with sleep disorders and high perceived stress and anxiety score reports. Patients will be assessed in the preintervention period, weekly during the 4 weeks of intervention, and then at 6 months postintervention. The primary outcomes are the differences in changes from baseline to postintervention in hormone release (α-amylase, cortisol, and melatonin) and sleep quality, as measured with the visual analog scale. Secondary outcome measures include clinical macular changes, as measured with optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography; retinal function, as measured using the visual field and best-corrected visual acuity; sleep data collected from personal wearables; and several patient-reported variables, such as self-recorded sleep diaries, quality of life, perceived stress, and functional status. RESULTS This project is still a study protocol and has not yet started. Bibliographic research for information for its justification began in 2020, and this working group is currently seeking start-up funding. As soon as we have the necessary means, we will proceed with the registration and organization prior to the preliminary phase. CONCLUSIONS In this feasibility randomized clinical controlled trial, we will compare the effects of SWL blocking alone, administration of OM alone, and a combined intervention with both in patients with RP. We present this study so that it may be replicated and incorporated into future studies at other institutions, as well as applied to additional inherited retinal dystrophies. The goal of presenting this protocol is to aid recent efforts in reducing the impact of sleeping disorders and other psychological disorders on the quality of life in patients with RP and recovering their self-autonomy. In addition, the results of this study will represent a significant step toward developing a novel low-cost therapy for patients with RP and validating a novel therapeutic target. Abstract
There is little information on the effects of exposure to light emitting diode (LED) illumination on the welfare of laboratory animals. Nesfatin-1, a satiety-regulation peptide present in various tissues, is found in the central nervous system and participates in the stress response. The present study investigated whether exposure to blue and white LED lights for 14 weeks affected growth and reproductive, biochemical and histopathological parameters in male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats as well as whether subcutaneous (SC) injection of nesfatin-1 (0.5 mg/kg bodyweight) in the last two weeks of the experimental period alleviated these effects. Forty male SD rats (21 days of age) were randomly allotted to 6 groups. The animals were exposed to routine fluorescent light (the control [C] and control + sesame oil [CS] groups) or blue/white LEDs (the blue-LED and white-LED groups), accompanied by nesfatin-1 administration (the blue-LED-N1 and white-LED-N1 groups). White-LED rats had significantly higher testis weights (p < 0.05) than control and blue-LED rats. Serum melatonin levels were significantly lower in blue-LED rats, but nesfatin-1 injection rescued melatonin levels in blue-LED-N1 rats (p < 0.05). Blue-LED rats showed the highest serum nesfatin-1 levels, but nesfatin-1 injection decreased nesfatin-1 levels in blue-LED-N1 rats (p < 0.0001). Blue-LED rats showed a significant reduction in sperm motility compared to the other groups (p < 0.0001). White and blue LED exposure caused significant negative histopathological changes in the testes, but nesfatin-1 administration reduced edema in the intertubular spaces, hyperemia in the interstitial cells, degeneration of spermatocytes and thinning of the tubular wall in the testicular tissues; these restorative effects were larger in blue-LED-N1 rats than white-LED-N1 rats. Blue and white LED exposures had negative effects on melatonin levels, testis weights and tissue health. Nesfatin-1 alleviated some of the negative effects of LED lighting.

Abstract
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting a significant portion of the female population, characterized by hormonal imbalances, oxidative stress, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. This review explores the multifaceted role of melatonin, a hormone primarily known for regulating circadian rhythms, in PCOS management. Melatonin's potential impact on hormonal balance, oxidative stress, sleep quality, and mood is comprehensively examined. It has been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity, regulate sex hormones, and influence gonadotropins, offering promise in addressing the intricate hormonal imbalances common in PCOS. As a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, melatonin mitigates oxidative stress and its associated complications. Its role in improving sleep quality and mood can significantly enhance the psychological well-being and daily functioning of PCOS patients. We discuss the potential implications of melatonin as a complementary or adjunct therapy, alongside existing PCOS treatments, and its significance in improving the overall quality of life for individuals with this syndrome. While further research is needed, melatonin's multifaceted effects promise a brighter future for PCOS patients.

Abstract
In recent years, the role of new factors in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases has been investigated. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide. Although pathological changes such as the accumulation of aggregated proteins in the brain and inflammatory responses are known as the main factors involved in the development of these diseases, new studies show the role of gut microbiota and circadian rhythm in the occurrence of these changes. However, the association between circadian rhythm and gut microbiota in AD and PD has not yet been investigated. Recent results propose that alterations in circadian rhythm regulators, mainly Bmal1, may regulate the abundance of gut microbiota. This correlation has been linked to the regulation of the expression of immune-related genes and Bmal-1 mediated oscillation of IgA and hydrogen peroxide production. These data seem to provide new insight into the molecular mechanism of melatonin inhibiting the progression of AD and PD. Therefore, this manuscript aims to review the role of the gut microbiota and circadian rhythm in health and AD and PD and also presents a hypothesis on the effect of melatonin on their communication.

Abstract
Purpose Previous studies have demonstrated an association between melatonin status and both refractive error and axial length in young adult myopes. This study aimed to determine if this relationship extends to a younger adolescent cohort. Methods Healthy children aged 12-15 years provided morning saliva samples before attending Ulster University (55°N) for cycloplegic autorefraction and axial length measures. Participants completed questionnaires describing recent sleep habits and physical activity. Salivary melatonin was quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Data collection for all participants occurred over a 1-week period (April 2021). Results Seventy participants aged 14.3 (95% CI: 14.2-14.5) years were categorised by spherical equivalent refraction [SER] (range: -5.38DS to +1.88DS) into two groups; myopic SER ≤ -0.50DS (n = 22) or nonmyopic -0.50DS < SER ≤ +2.00DS (n = 48). Median morning salivary melatonin levels were 4.52 pg/ml (95% CI: 2.60-6.02) and 4.89 pg/ml (95% CI: 3.18-5.66) for myopic and nonmyopic subjects, respectively, and did not differ significantly between refractive groups (P = 0.91). Melatonin levels were not significantly correlated with SER, axial length, sleep, or activity scores (Spearman's rank, all P > 0.39). Higher levels of physical activity were associated with higher sleep quality (Spearman's rank, ρ = -0.28, P = 0.02). Conclusion The present study found no significant relationship between morning salivary melatonin levels and refractive error or axial length in young adolescents. This contrasts with outcomes from a previous study of adults with comparable methodology, season of data collection, and geographical location. Prospective studies are needed to understand the discrepancies between adult and childhood findings and evaluate whether melatonin levels in childhood are indicative of an increased risk for future onset of myopia and/or faster axial growth trajectories and myopia progression in established myopes. Future work should opt for a comprehensive dim-light melatonin onset protocol to determine circadian phase.

Abstract
Salivary melatonin is a clinically used biomarker for diagnosing circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Current melatonin detection assays are complex, expensive, and in many cases do not adequately measure low levels of salivary melatonin. Precisely measuring melatonin levels at multiple time points is crucial for determining dim light melatonin onset to evaluate its circadian fluctuation as well as the extent of circadian disruption and consequently adapt treatment regimens. Moreover, melatonin low levels in saliva challenges the reliability of routine clinical testing. This paper presents the development of a novel, highly sensitive, yet cost-effective, colorimetric assay for the rapid detection of salivary melatonin utilizing aptamer-AuNPs. Among several types of the aptamer tested, the 36-mer MLT-A-2 aptamer-AuNP probe showed the highest sensitivity with a melatonin limit of detection of 0.0011 nM along with a limit of quantification of 0.0021 nM in saliva. Moreover, our assay showed preferential interaction with melatonin when tested in presence of other structurally similar counter-targets. Taken together, this study provides new parameters for a melatonin assay that meets adequate levels of sensitivity and selectivity. The developed colorimetric assay could be adapted in a point-of-care system for profiling salivary melatonin levels at multiple time points during 24 h, crucial for accurately diagnosing and monitoring circadian rhythm sleep disorders and beyond.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that the prevalence of high blood pressure is increasing, and it may have serious consequences. However, research on the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students is still relatively scarce. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students in Shenyang, in order to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and management of this disease. From April to May 2020, 4892 students aged 7 to 17 years were selected as the survey subjects, and on-site physical measurements and questionnaire surveys were conducted. The prevalence of high blood pressure was described. Restricted cubic spline was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between sleep duration, BMI and the risk of high blood pressure. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors. Multiplicative and additive models were used to analyze the interaction between sleep duration and BMI. The results showed that the overall prevalence of high blood pressure among students aged 7 to 17 years in Shenyang was 9.9%, with a higher prevalence in females than males (12.1% vs 7.9%) and in urban areas than suburban areas (11.8% vs 7.7%). The prevalence was lowest in students with normal weight (8.3%) and highest in those who were obese (12.5%). The prevalence fluctuated to some extent among different age groups, but overall, it increased with age, with the lowest prevalence in primary school students (7.0%), 11.4% in mild school students, and the highest prevalence of 14.3% in high school students. Multivariable analysis showed that the risk of high blood pressure in female students was 1.90 times higher than that in male students (95% CI: 1.54-2.35), and the risk in suburban areas was 0.65 times lower than that in urban areas (95% CI: 0.52-0.81). Students with a BMI ≥ 21 kg/m2 had a 1.58 times higher risk than those with a BMI < 21 kg/m2(95% CI: 1.28-1.96), while those with a sleep time ≥ 8 hours had a 0.80 times lower risk than those with a sleep time < 8 hours (95% CI: 0.65-0.99). Exercise can significantly reduce the risk of high blood pressure, while using electronic devices for more than 0.5 hours significantly increases the risk of high blood pressure. BMI and sleep duration have no interaction effect on the risk of high blood pressure. To reduce the prevalence of high blood pressure, students should reduce the use of electronic devices, ensure adequate exercise, maintain a reasonable weight, and ensure sufficient sleep.

Abstract
Antarctic expeditions include isolation and exposure to cold and extreme photoperiods (with continuous natural light during summer) that may influence psychophysiological responses modulated by luminosity and sleep. We assessed changes in night sleep patterns by actigraphy, salivary biomarkers, and perceptual variables in seven participants in the following time points along a 50-day camping expedition in Antarctica (Nelson Island): Pre-Field (i.e., on the ship before camp), Field-1, Field-2, Field-3, Field-4 (from 1st to 10th, 11th to 20th, 21st to 35th and 36th to 50th days in camp, respectively), and Post-Field (on the ship after camp). We also characterized mood states, daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality by questionnaires. Staying in an Antarctic camp reduced sleep efficiency (5.2%) and increased the number of awakenings and wakefulness after sleep onset (51.8% and 67.1%, respectively). Furthermore, transient increases in time in bed (16.5%) and sleep onset latency (4.8 ± 4.0 min, from Pre- to Field-3) was observed. These changes were accompanied by an altered pattern of the emerging circadian marker β-Arrestin-1 and a trend to reduce nocturnal melatonin [57.1%; P = 0.066, with large effect size (ES) from Pre-Field to Field-2 (ES = 1.2) and Field-3 (ES = 1.2)]. All changes returned to Pre-Field values during the Post-Field. The volunteers reported sleep-related physical complaints (feeling of cold and pain, discomfort to breathe, and cough or loud snoring), excessive daytime sleepiness, and reduced vigor during the camp. Thus, a 50-day camp alters neuroendocrine regulation and induces physical discomfort, which may explain the impaired sleep pattern and the consequent daytime sleepiness and mood changes.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the association of milk intake with sleep disorders and their specific indicators. The current study included 768 adults aged 28-95 from Wenling, China. Milk intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire with ten food items, while sleep disorders were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), with higher scores indicating poorer sleep. The participants were divided into two groups according to the average intake of milk per week: rare intake (≤62.5 mL/week) and regular intake (>62.5 mL/week). Primary measurements were multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prevalence of sleep disorders concerning regular milk intake compared with rare intake. In secondary analyses, linear regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of milk intake on sleep disorders and their specific dimensions. Regular intake of milk did not have a significant association with sleep disorders compared with rare intake (adjusted OR: 0.72, 95%; CI: 0.51, 1.03), but this association was found to be pronounced with sleep disturbances (OR: 0.49, 95%; CI: 0.28, 0.87). Increased intake of milk was significantly associated with the lower scores of PSQI for sleep quality (β: -0.045, 95%; CI: -0.083, -0.007) and sleep disturbances (β: -0.059, 95%; CI: -0.090, -0.029), respectively. When stratified by age and gender, the benefits of milk intake for sleep disorders and sleep disturbances were more significant in older adults (≥65) and men than in younger persons and women. In summary, regular milk intake benefits sleep quality, which may contribute to nutritional psychiatric support for prevention against sleep disorders.

Abstract
A healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition have a major impact on the well-being of a population. Therefore, the aim of this research is to describe the behavior of these habits in relation to sociodemographic variables to provide data on the development of effective training and awareness-raising actions. METHODS An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. To study the behavior of a series of variables related to eating habits and lifestyle, a questionnaire was designed and validated and subsequently disseminated online, by means of nonprobabilistic snowball sampling, relying on social networks. The sample collected consisted of 18,070 young adults of Spanish nationality. Bivariate comparative analyses were performed using t-test independent samples, and the effect size (ES) was calculated by determining Cohen's D coefficient. A multivariate analysis were conducted using linear regression and principal component analysis. RESULTS Adults eat better but have a poorer quality of rest and are more sedentary than young people. No gender differences were found in nutritional habits; however, men engage in more sports and sleep better. People with a higher educational level have better nutritional and sleep habits, but are more sedentary, as are people of a higher socioeconomic level. CONCLUSIONS Higher socioeconomic and educational levels seem to favor a healthier lifestyle. The Spanish population aged 18-45 years needs to make dietary changes but leads an active lifestyle.

Abstract
Sleep is an essential biological phase of our daily life cycle and is necessary for maintaining homeostasis, alertness, metabolism, cognition, and other key functions across the animal kingdom. Dysfunctional sleep leads to deleterious effects on health, mood, and cognition, including memory deficits and an increased risk of diabetes, stroke, and neurological disorders. Sleep is regulated by several brain neuronal circuits, neuromodulators, and neurotransmitters, where cannabinoids have been increasingly found to play a part in its modulation. Cannabinoids, a group of lipid metabolites, are regulatory molecules that bind mainly to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). Much evidence supports the role of cannabinoid receptors in the modulation of sleep, where their alteration exhibits sleep-promoting effects, including an increase in non-rapid-eye movement sleep and a reduction in sleep latency. However, the pharmacological alteration of CB1 receptors is associated with adverse psychotropic effects, which are not exhibited in CB2 receptor alteration. Hence, selective alteration of CB2 receptors is also of clinical importance, where it could potentially be used in treating sleep disorders. Thus, it is crucial to understand the neurobiological basis of cannabinoids in sleep physiology. In this review article, the alteration of the endocannabinoid system by various cannabinoids and their respective effects on the sleep-wake cycle are discussed based on recent findings. The mechanisms of the cannabinoid receptors on sleep and wakefulness are also explored for their clinical implications and potential therapeutic use on sleep disorders.

Abstract
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by elevated motor behaviors and dream enactments in REM sleep, often preceding the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD). As RBD could serve as a biomarker for early PD developments, pharmacological interventions targeting α-synuclein aggregation triggered RBD could be applied toward early PD progression. However, robust therapeutic guidelines toward PD-induced RBD are lacking, owing in part to a historical paucity of effective treatments and trials. We reviewed the bidirectional links between α-synuclein neurodegeneration, progressive sleep disorders, and RBD. We highlighted the correlation between RBD development, α-synuclein aggregation, and neuronal apoptosis in key brainstem regions involved in REM sleep atonia maintenance. The current pharmacological intervention strategies targeting RBD and their effects on progressive PD are discussed, as well as current treatments for progressive neurodegeneration and their effects on RBD. We also evaluated emerging and potential pharmacological solutions to sleep disorders and developing synucleinopathies. This review provides insights into the mechanisms and therapeutic targets underlying RBD and PD, and explores bidirectional treatment effects for both diseases, underscoring the need for further research in this area.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic alterations are very common in bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between chronotype and cardiometabolic parameters in patients with a primary diagnosis of BD. This study is an observational clinical investigation including 170 subjects consecutively admitted to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit of the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino (Genoa, Italy), recruited over a period of 48 months. A psychometric tool assessing chronotype was administered and blood tests were performed. Furthermore, the atherogenic coefficient ((total cholesterol-HDL cholesterol)/HDL cholesterol), and Castelli risk index-I (total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol) and -II (LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol) were calculated. Patients with BD and an eveningness chronotype showed a higher body mass index, total and low-density lipotrotein cholesterol compared to patients with BD and an intermediate or morning chronotype. Furthermore, the Atherogenic Coefficient and Castelli Risk-Index I-II were found to be higher in bipolar patients with an evening chronotype. The role of chronotype in the development of obesity and cardiovascular risk is, therefore, a relationship worth being investigated, especially in the context of BD, to ameliorate the clinical and therapeutic approach, aiming at increasing the quality of life and reducing the mortality.

Abstract
Memory formation is a dynamic process that comprises different phases, such as encoding, consolidation and retrieval. It could be altered by several factors such as sleep quality, anxiety, and depression levels. In the last years, due to COVID-19 pandemic, there was a reduction in sleep quality, an increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as an impairment in emotional episodic memory encoding, especially in young adults. Taking into account the profound impact of sleep quality in daily life a series of rules has been developed that are conducive to consistently achieving good sleep, known as sleep hygiene education. These interventions have been shown to be effective in improving sleep quality and duration and reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms. Here we propose the implementation of a brief sleep hygiene education to improve sleep quality and memory performance as well as to diminish anxiety and depressive scores. For that, participants were divided into two groups: Sleep hygiene education and control group. After that, they were evaluated for anxiety, depression, and sleep quality levels and trained on an episodic memory task. They were tested immediately after (short-term test) and also 1 week later (long-term test). This procedure was also performed before the sleep hygiene education and was taken as baseline level. We found that episodic memory performance for young adults improved for the SHE group after intervention but not for older adults, and no improvements in emotional variables were observed. Despite not observing a significant effect of the intervention for young and older adults regarding the sleep quality scores, we consider that there may be an improvement in sleep physiology that is not subjectively perceived, but would also have a positive impact on memory processes. These results show that even a sleep hygiene education of 1 week could improve cognition in young adults when acute memory and sleep impairment occurs, in this case, due to the isolation by COVID-19 pandemic. However, we suggest that longer interventions should be implemented for older adults who already experience a natural decline in cognitive processes such as episodic memory formation.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) represents one of the best examples of circadian fluctuations in disease severity. Patients with RA experience stiffness, pain, and swelling in afflicted joints in the early morning, which tends to become milder toward the afternoon. This has been primarily explained by the higher blood levels of pro-inflammatory hormones and cytokines, such as melatonin, TNFα, IL-1, and IL-6, in the early morning than in the afternoon as well as insufficient levels of anti-inflammatory cortisol, which rises later in the morning. Clinical importance of the circadian regulation of RA symptoms has been demonstrated by the effectiveness of time-of-day-dependent delivery of therapeutic agents in chronotherapy. The primary inflammatory site in RA is the synovium, where increased macrophages, T cells, and synovial fibroblasts play central roles by secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and enzymes to stimulate each other, additional immune cells, and osteoclasts, ultimately leading to cartilage and bone erosion. Among these central players, macrophages have been one of the prime targets for the study of the link between circadian rhythms and inflammatory activities. Gene knockout experiments of various core circadian regulators have established that disruption of any core circadian regulators results in hyper- or hypoactivation of inflammatory responses by macrophages when challenged by lipopolysaccharide and bacteria. Although these stimulations are not directly linked to RA etiology, these findings serve as a foundation for further study by providing proof of principle. On the other hand, circadian regulation of osteoclasts, downstream effectors of macrophages, remain under-explored. Nonetheless, circadian expression of the inducers of osteoclastogenesis, such as TNFα, IL-1, and IL-6, as well as the knockout phenotypes of circadian regulators in osteoclasts suggest the significance of the circadian control of osteoclast activity in the pathogenesis of RA. More detailed mechanistic understanding of the circadian regulation of macrophages and osteoclasts in the afflicted joints could add novel local therapeutic options for RA.

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the associations of dietary patterns and circadian syndrome (CircS). Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2016 were analyzed (n = 10,486). Factor analysis was used to construct dietary patterns based on two 24 h food recalls. CircS was defined based on components of the metabolic syndrome, with the addition of short sleep and depression symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the associations. Two major dietary patterns were identified. The Western dietary pattern had high loadings of refined grains, solid fats, added sugars, and red and cured meats, while the prudent pattern was characterized by a high intake of vegetables, whole grains, oils, nuts, and seeds. The prevalence of CircS was 41.3%. Comparing extreme quartiles of intake, the odds ratios (OR) for having CircS were 1.96 (95%CI 1.53-2.53) and 0.71 (95%CI 0.58-0.86) for the Western pattern and prudent pattern, respectively. The association between the Western dietary pattern and CircS was stronger among men (OR = 2.05; 95%CI 1.48-2.85) and those with low income (OR = 1.94; 95%CI 1.27-2.96) and high education (OR = 3.38; 95%CI 1.90-6.04). The Western dietary pattern was associated with a higher likelihood of having CircS, while the prudent pattern was inversely associated with CircS.

Abstract
Poor quality of sleep leads to an increase in severity of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome and vice versa. The aim of this study was to determine if the poor perceived sleep quality in FM patients could be corroborated by objective physiological determinations. Perceived sleep quality was evaluated (through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) in 68 FM patients compared to an age-matched reference group of 68 women without FM. Objective sleep quality (measured using accelerometry), and systemic concentrations of sleep-related hormones (catecholamines, oxytocin, serotonin, and melatonin) were evaluated in two representative groups from the reference control group (n = 11) and FM patients (n = 11). FM patients reported poorer subjective sleep quality compared to the reference group. However, no significant differences were found in accelerometry parameters, except for a delay in getting in and out of bed. In addition, FM patients showed no significant differences in oxytocin concentration and adrenaline/noradrenaline ratio, as well as a lower serotonin/melatonin ratio. Poor perception of sleep quality in FM patients does not correspond to objective determinations. A dysregulation of the stress response could be associated with the delay in their resting circadian rhythm and difficulty falling asleep. This would be the cause that justifies the perceived lack of rest and the fatigue they feel when waking up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk associated with sleep latencies in the general adult population is unknown. We aimed to investigate the association of habitual prolonged sleep latency with long-term all-cause and cause-specific mortality in adults. METHODS The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) is a population-based prospective cohort study comprising community-dwelling men and women aged 40-69 years from Ansan, South Korea. The cohort was studied bi-annually from April 17, 2003, to Dec 15, 2020, and the current analysis included all individuals who completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire between April 17, 2003, and Feb 23, 2005. The final study population comprised 3757 participants. Data were analysed from Aug 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022. The main exposure was sleep latency groups based on the PSQI questionnaire: fell asleep in 15 min or less, fell asleep in 16-30 min, occasional prolonged sleep latency (fell asleep in >30 min once or twice a week in the past month) and habitual prolonged sleep latency (fell asleep in >60 min more than once a week or fell asleep in >30 min ≥3 times a week, or both) in the past month at baseline. Outcomes were all-cause and cause-specific (cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other causes) mortality reported during the 18-year study period. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the prospective relationship between sleep latency and all-cause mortality, and competing risk analyses were done to investigate the association of sleep latency with cause-specific mortality. FINDINGS During a median follow-up of 16·7 years (IQR 16·3-17·4), 226 deaths were reported. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, physical characteristics, lifestyle factors, chronic conditions, and sleep variables, self-reported habitual prolonged sleep latency was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 2·22, 95% CI 1·38-3·57) compared to the reference group (those who fell asleep in 16-30 min). In the fully adjusted model, habitual prolonged sleep latency was associated with a more than doubled risk of dying from cancer compared to the reference group (HR 2·74, 95% CI 1·29-5·82). No significant association was observed between habitual prolonged sleep latency and deaths from cardiovascular disease and other causes. INTERPRETATION In this population-based prospective cohort study, habitual prolonged sleep latency was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause and cancer-specific mortality in adults (independently of demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, chronic morbidities, and other sleep variables). Although further studies are warranted to investigate the causality of the relationship, strategies or interventions to prevent habitual prolonged sleep latencies might enhance longevity in the general adult population. Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has been the main category of metabolic diseases in recent years due to changes in lifestyle and environmental conditions such as diet and physical activity. On the other hand, the circadian rhythm is one of the most significant biological pathways in humans and other mammals, which is affected by light, sleep, and human activity. However, this cycle is controlled via complicated cellular pathways with feedback loops. It is widely known that changes in the circadian rhythm can alter some metabolic pathways of body cells and could affect the treatment process, particularly for metabolic diseases like T2DM. The aim of this study is to explore the importance of the circadian rhythm in the occurrence of T2DM via reviewing the metabolic pathways involved, their relationship with the circadian rhythm from two perspectives, lifestyle and molecular pathways, and their effect on T2DM pathophysiology. These impacts have been demonstrated in a variety of studies and led to the development of approaches such as time-restricted feeding, chronotherapy (time-specific therapies), and circadian molecule stabilizers.

Abstract
Sleep plays an essential role in all studied animals with a nervous system. However, sleep deprivation leads to various pathological changes and neurobehavioral problems. Astrocytes are the most abundant cells in the brain and are involved in various important functions, including neurotransmitter and ion homeostasis, synaptic and neuronal modulation, and blood-brain barrier maintenance; furthermore, they are associated with numerous neurodegenerative diseases, pain, and mood disorders. Moreover, astrocytes are increasingly being recognized as vital contributors to the regulation of sleep-wake cycles, both locally and in specific neural circuits. In this review, we begin by describing the role of astrocytes in regulating sleep and circadian rhythms, focusing on: (i) neuronal activity; (ii) metabolism; (iii) the glymphatic system; (iv) neuroinflammation; and (v) astrocyte-microglia cross-talk. Moreover, we review the role of astrocytes in sleep deprivation comorbidities and sleep deprivation-related brain disorders. Finally, we discuss potential interventions targeting astrocytes to prevent or treat sleep deprivation-related brain disorders. Pursuing these questions would pave the way for a deeper understanding of the cellular and neural mechanisms underlying sleep deprivation-comorbid brain disorders.

Abstract
Depression is a high-incidence mood disorder that is frequently accompanied by sleep disturbances, which can be triggered by the non-image-forming (NIF) visual system. Therefore, we hypothesize that polybrominated diphenyl ethers are known to induce visual impairment that could promote depression by disrupting the NIF visual pathway. In this study, zebrafish larvae were exposed to BDE-47 at environmentally relevant concentrations (2.5 and 25 μg/L). BDE-47 caused melanopsin genes that dominate the NIF visual system that fell at night (p < 0.05) but rose in the morning (p < 0.05). Such bidirectional difference transmitted to clock genes and neuropeptides in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and impacted the adjacent serotonin system. However, indicative factors of depression, including serta, htr1aa, and aanat2, were unidirectionally increased 1.3- to 1.6-fold (p < 0.05). They were consistent with the increase in nighttime thigmotaxis (p < 0.05) and circadian hypoactivity (p < 0.05). The results of melanopsin antagonism also indicated that these consequences were possibly due to the combination of direct photoentrainment by melanopsin and circadian disruption originating from melanopsin. Collectively, our findings revealed that BDE-47 exposure disrupted the NIF visual pathway and resulted in depression-like effects, which may further exert profound health effects like mood disorders.

Abstract
Melatonin has profound antioxidant activity and numerous functions in humans as well as in livestock and poultry. Additionally, melatonin plays an important role in regulating the biological rhythms of animals. Combining melatonin with scientific breeding management has considerable potential for optimizing animal physiological functions, but this idea still faces significant challenges. In this review, we summarized the beneficial effects of melatonin supplementation on physiology and reproductive processes in cattle, including granulosa cells, oocytes, circadian rhythm, stress, inflammation, testicular function, spermatogenesis, and semen cryopreservation. There is much emerging evidence that melatonin can profoundly affect cattle. In the future, we hope that melatonin can not only be applied to cattle, but can also be used to safely and effectively improve the efficiency of animal husbandry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep disturbance is one of the common complaints of patients with COVID-19 infection. Melatonin is a physiological indoleamine involved in circadian rhythm regulation and it is currently used for secondary sleep disorders caused by various diseases. Some clinical randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have obtained a small amount of evidence and controversial results in support of their therapeutic effect on sleep disorders, but no studies have summarised and evaluated RCTs in all current databases to obtain conclusive results. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy and safety of melatonin in the treatment of sleep disturbances in patients with COVID-19. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search for RCT-type studies of melatonin in the treatment of sleep disturbances in patients with COVID-19. From inception to October 2022 will be available on PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ICTRP, Wanfang Data, VIP database and CNKI, VIP database, China Biomedical Literature Database to search for eligible studies. There are no language and geographical restrictions. Two authors will independently screen and select eligible studies, assess methodological quality and perform data extraction. Two additional authors will independently extract data from each study. Then, meta-analysis will then be carried out using a fixed-effects or random-effects model, using the mean difference for continuous outcomes and the relative risk for dichotomous outcomes. Risk of bias assessment will be assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed by Cochrane Q-test and I2. The quality of evidence for each outcome will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology. Funnel plots, Begg's test and Egger's test will be used to assess the risk of publication bias. Subgroup analysis, data synthesis, meta-analysis and overall incidence of adverse events will be performed using Review Manager V.5.4 software and Stata software. Trial sequential analysis will be performed if appropriate. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study is an extraction review of data from existing studies, and thus it is unnecessary to obtain ethical approval. The results of this systematic review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022359221.

Abstract
Research has shown that MTNR1A plays an essential role in the estrus cycle and seasonal reproduction changes in sheep. However, few people have focused on the DNA methylation of MTNR1A by season or photoperiod. In this study, using qPCR and Western blotting, we measured the MTNR1A expression in the hypothalamus of ovariectomized and estradiol-treated (OVX + E2) sheep under different photoperiod treatment conditions. Subsequently, the core promoter of the MTNR1A gene was identified, and its methylation level in sheep exposed to different photoperiod treatments was measured by pyrosequencing. The results showed that MTNR1A gene expression significantly differed between the short 42-day photoperiod (SP42) and the LP42 or combined SP-LP42 treatment groups (p < 0.05). In addition, we determined that the core MTNR1A promoter region was within 540 bp upstream of the transcriptional start site (TSS) and that the DNA methylation levels at CpG sites in the SP42 vs. LP42 and SP42 vs. SP-LP42 groups significantly differed. Finally, a significant negative correlation (p < 0.001) between gene expression and DNA methylation levels was revealed, suggesting that photoperiod may induce DNA methylation of the MTNR1A gene and thus change its expression. The findings provide valuable bases for the further study of seasonal reproduction in sheep.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. There is a wide range of sleep disturbances in patients with PD, such as insomnia and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (or REM behavior disorder (RBD)). RBD is a sleep disorder in which a patient acts out his/her dreams and includes abnormal behaviors during the REM phase of sleep. On the other hand, melatonin is the principal hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland and significantly modulates the circadian clock and mood state. Furthermore, melatonin has a wide range of regulatory effects and is a safe treatment for sleep disturbances such as RBD in PD. However, the molecular mechanisms of melatonin involved in the treatment or control of RBD are unknown. In this study, we reviewed the pathophysiology of PD and sleep disturbances, including RBD. We also discussed the potential molecular mechanisms of melatonin involved in its therapeutic effect. It was concluded that disruption of crucial neurotransmitter systems that mediate sleep, including norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, and important neurotransmitter systems that mediate the REM phase, including acetylcholine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, are significantly involved in the induction of sleep disturbances, including RBD in PD. It was also concluded that accumulation of α-synuclein in sleep-related brain regions can disrupt sleep processes and the circadian rhythm. We suggested that new treatment strategies for sleep disturbances in PD may focus on the modulation of α-synuclein aggregation or expression.

Abstract
Background: Cesarean section (CS) has been linked to a number of negative effects, such as pain, anxiety, and sleeping problems. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the safety and efficacy of preoperative melatonin on postoperative outcomes in pregnant women who were scheduled for elective CS. Methods: We systemically searched 4 electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) from inception until 10 March 2023. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing melatonin and placebo for postoperative outcomes in CS patients. For risk of bias assessment, we used the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool. Continuous variables were pooled as mean difference (MD), and categorical variables were pooled as a risk ratio (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: We included 7 studies with a total of 754 pregnant women scheduled for CS. The melatonin group had a lower pain score (MD = -1.23, 95% CI [-1.94, -0.51], p < 0.001) and longer time to first analgesic request (MD = 60.41 min, 95% CI [45.47, 75.36], p < 0.001) than the placebo group. No difference was found regarding hemoglobin levels, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, total blood loss, or adverse events. Conclusions: Preoperative melatonin may reduce postoperative pain in CS patients without side effects. This research offers a safe and affordable pain management method for this population, which has clinical consequences. Further research is needed to validate these findings and determine the best melatonin dosage and timing.

Abstract
Background Poor glycemic control is the current most important tragedy in type 2 diabetic patients. Sleep has a major modulatory effect on endocrine and metabolic function. Sleep disturbance is associated with increased circulating cortisol levels, sympathetic activity, and epinephrine secretion. These physiological conditions are directly or indirectly associated with glucose metabolism in our body cells. In Ethiopia, sleep pattern association with glycemic control level is not studied yet. Objectives To assess glycemic control and its association with sleep quality, sleep duration and napping among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Referral and Specialized Hospital Northwest Ethiopia. Method An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 407 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients from July 1, 2020, to April 28, 2021, using a systematic random sampling technique. We drew 5 mL of blood from each patient before breakfast to determine their fasting blood sugar level. The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index was used to assess patients' sleep quality, and the presence or absence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea was determined using the STOP-BANG questionnaire. Data were analysed using STATA version 14.1.variables with a P-value of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results Glycemic control was found to be poor in 54.05% of the study participants. Female sex, poor sleep quality, and short and long sleep durations were all significantly associated with impaired glycemic control. Being female increased the odds of poor glycemic control by 2.7 times (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.23, 6.15) compared to males. T2DM patients who had poor sleep quality had 3.3 times (AOR = 3.3, 95% CI (1.16, 9.37) higher odds of poor glycemic control compared to patients who had good sleep quality. The odds of having poor glycemic control among T2DM patients who were at low risk of OSA and intermediate risk of OSA were decreased by 96% (AOR = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.12) and 86% (AOR = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.43) compared to T2DM patients who were at high risk of OSA, respectively. T2DM patients who had short sleep duration (<6 hours) were 8.3 times (AOR = 8.3, 95% CI: 2.66-25.85) higher chances of poor glycemic control compared to patients who had average sleep duration. T2DM patients who had long sleep duration (>8 hours) increased the odds of poor glycemic control by 2.6 times (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI (1.12-6.04) compared to those who had average sleep duration. The chances of having poor glycemic control among T2DM patients who did not take the balanced diet recommended by their physician were increased by 3.8 times (AOR = 3.8 95% CI: 1.05-13.77). Conclusion The prevalence of poor glycemic control in T2DM patients was high. Poor sleep quality, both short and long sleep duration, and an intermediate or low risk of obstructive sleep apnea were statistically associated with poor glycemic control. Hence, good sleep quality and appropriate sleep duration are recommended to maintain glycemic control levels in the normal range.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gut microbiota colonization is critical for immune education and nutrient metabolism. Research shows that melatonin has beneficial effects as a therapy for many diseases via modulating gut dysbiosis. However, it is unclear whether melatonin alters gut microbiota colonization in early life. METHODS In the experimental group (Mel), mice were intraperitoneally injected with melatonin at 10 mg/kg body weight for embryonic days 14-16 and received drinking water containing 0.4 mg/mL melatonin until 28 days postpartum. In the control group (Ctrl), mice were injected with the same volume of 2.5% ethanol in saline and provided with standard water. Two more groups were created by treating neonatal mice with 20 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce inflammation, resulting in the groups Ctrl + LPS and Mel + LPS, respectively. We examined the gut microbiota of the neonatal mice in the Ctrl and Mel group on Days 7, 14, 21, and 28 post-birth. On Day 14, melatonin and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentrations were measured in the Ctrl and Mel group and the mice were treated with LPS to be evaluated for intestinal injury and inflammatory response 15 h post treatment. According to the result of the SCFAs concentrations, some neonatal mice were intraperitoneally injected with 500 mg/kg sodium butyrate (SB) from Days 11-13, intraperitoneally injected with 20 mg/kg LPS on Day 14, and then euthanized by carbon dioxide inhalation the next morning. Intestinal injury and inflammatory responses were evaluated in the Ctrl + LPS and SB + LPS groups, respectively. RESULTS By Day 14, it was evident that maternal melatonin supplementation significantly increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes in the ileal [61.03 (35.35 - 76.18) % vs. 98.02 (86.61 - 99.01) %, P = 0.003] and colonic [73.88 (69.77 - 85.99) % vs. 96.16 (94.57 - 96.34) %, P = 0.04] microbiota, the concentration of melatonin (0.79 ± 0.49 ng/ml vs. 6.11 ± 3.48 ng/ml, P = 0.008) in the gut lumen, and the fecal butyric acid (12.91 ± 5.74 μg/g vs. 23.58 ± 10.71 μg/g, P = 0.026) concentration of neonatal mice. Melatonin supplementation, and sodium butyrate treatment markedly alleviated intestinal injury and decreased inflammatory factors in neonatal mice. CONCLUSION This study suggests that maternal melatonin supplementation can shape the gut microbiota and metabolism of offspring under normal physiological conditions and protect them against LPS-induced inflammation in early life.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) affect 15% of the world's population and are becoming an increasingly common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Circadian rhythm disorders (CRDs) have been reported to be involved in the pathogenic regulation of various neurologic diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Proteomic technology is helpful to explore treatment targets for CRDs in patients with NDs. Here, we review the key differentially expressed (DE) proteins identified in previous proteomic studies investigating NDs, CRDs and associated models and the related pathways identified by enrichment analysis. Furthermore, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the above studies and propose new proteomic technologies for the precise study of circadian disorder-mediated regulation of ND pathology. This review provides a theoretical and technical reference for the precise study of circadian disorder-mediated regulation of ND pathology.

Abstract
The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment analyzes the health and quality of life of the elderly. Basic and instrumental daily activities may be compromised due to neuroimmunoendocrine changes, and studies suggest that possible immunological changes occur during infections in the elderly. Thus, this study aimed to analyze cytokine and melatonin levels in serum and correlate the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in elderly patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The sample consisted of 73 elderly individuals, 43 of whom were without infection and 30 of whom had positive diagnoses of COVID-19. Blood samples were collected to quantify cytokines by flow cytometry and melatonin by ELISA. In addition, structured and validated questionnaires were applied to assess basic (Katz) and instrumental (Lawton and Brody) activities. There was an increase in IL-6, IL-17, and melatonin in the group of elderly individuals with infection. In addition, a positive correlation was observed between melatonin and IL-6 and IL-17 in elderly patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Furthermore, there was a reduction in the score of the Lawton and Brody Scale in the infected elderly. These data suggest that the melatonin hormone and inflammatory cytokines are altered in the serum of the elderly with SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, there is a degree of dependence, mainly regarding the performance of daily instrumental activities, in the elderly. The considerable impact on the elderly person's ability to perform everyday tasks necessary for independent living is an extremely important result, and changes in cytokines and melatonin probably are associated with alterations in these daily activities of the elderly.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus is an important public health problem and has been associated with the development of pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence. The interaction is related to hyperglycemia, and inflammatory and hormonal patterns, which favor functional alterations in different organs and systems. Several genes associated with human diseases have been identified and partially characterized. Most of these genes are known to cause monogenic diseases. However, about 3 % of diseases do not fit the monogenic theory due to the complex interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors, as in chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes. The nutritional, immunological, and hormonal patterns associated with changes in maternal metabolism may influence and contribute to greater susceptibility to urinary tract disorders. However, early systematic reviews have not yielded consistent findings for these associations. This literature review summarizes important new findings from integrating nutrigenomics, hormones, and cytokines in women with Gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence. Changes in maternal metabolism due to hyperglycemia can generate an inflammatory environment with increased inflammatory cytokines. This environment modulated by inflammation can alter tryptophan uptake through food and thus influence the production of serotonin and melatonin. As these hormones seem to have protective effects against smooth muscle dysfunction and to restore the impaired contractility of the detrusor muscle, it is assumed that these changes may favor the onset of urinary incontinence specific to pregnancy.

Abstract
The prevalence of artificial lights not only improves the lighting conditions for modern society, but also poses kinds of health threats to human health. Although there are regulations and standards concerning light pollution, few of them are based on the potential contribution of improper lighting to diseases. Therefore, a better understanding of the health threats induced by light pollution may promote risk assessment and better regulation of artificial lights, thereby a healthy lighting environment. This review is based on a careful collection of the latest papers from 2018 to 2022 about the health threats of light pollution, both epidemiologically and experimentally. In addition to summing up the novel associations of light pollution with obesity, mental disorders, cancer, etc., we highlight the toxicological mechanism of light pollution via circadian disruption, since light pollution directly interferes with the natural light-dark cycles, and damages the circadian photoentrainment of organisms. And by reviewing the alternations of clock genes and disturbance of melatonin homeostasis induced by artificial lights, we aim to excavate the profound impacts of light pollution based on accumulating studies, thus providing perspectives for future research and guiding relevant regulations and standards.

Abstract
PURPOSE One of the causes of infertility is circadian rhythm disorders. This study aimed to investigate Clock 3111 T/C and Period3 VNTR (variable number tandem repeat) gene polymorphisms and these gene proteins, some biochemical parameters, and circadian rhythm hormones in infertile women. METHODS Thirty-five infertile women and thirty-one healthy fertile women were included. Blood samples were taken in the mid-luteal phase. DNAs obtained from peripheral blood were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. Follicle-stimulating hormone, LH (luteinizing hormone), estradiol, prolactin, free triiodothyronine, fT4 (free thyroxine), thyroid-stimulating hormone, testosterone, cortisol, progesterone, prolactin, ferritin, vitamin B12, and folate levels in serum samples were determined by the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay method. Melatonin, Clock, and Period3 protein levels were determined with ELISA kits. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the frequency of Period3 DD (Per34/4) genotype between the groups. The Clock protein level of the infertile group was higher than the fertile group. Clock protein levels of the fertile group were positively correlated with estradiol levels and negatively correlated with LH, prolactin, and fT4 levels. PER3 protein levels of the infertile group were negatively correlated with LH levels. Melatonin levels of the fertile group were positively correlated with progesterone levels and negatively correlated with cortisol levels. Melatonin levels of the infertile group were positively correlated with LH levels and negatively correlated with cortisol levels. CONCLUSION Per34/4 genotype may be an independent risk factor in infertile women. Different correlation results found in fertile and infertile women can form the basis for future studies.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies in the liver with poor prognosis. In order to improve the prognosis and overall survival of patients with HCC, it is important to identify it at early stage and resect it precisely. Cell microenvironment, active compounds, and enzymes may change during the cancerization of hepatocytes. Hypochlorous acid (HClO), one of the most significant signal molecules in the cellular signaling pathway, plays an important role in many cellular processes. To detect and treat liver cancers, it is imperative to study how HClO levels change in hepatocytes. However, developing fluorescent probes specific to liver cells to detect HClO still challenging. Herein, we designed and synthesized a NIR hepatocyte-specific fluorescent probe (MBH-MT) that displayed excellent optical properties for detecting HClO in biological samples. Cell imaging experiment conducted with the unique probe MBH-MT, showed that the biocompatible sensor is capable of monitoring HClO and distinguishing normal cells from cancer cells (e.g., HepG2, HUVEC, RAW264.7, L02 and HK-2 cells). An organ imaging experiment with the probe MBH-MT demonstrated its effectiveness in diagnosing and imaging hepatocellular carcinoma in vivo. MBH-MT's in situ imaging also demonstrated that it can target and image mouse hepatocellular carcinomas. Furthermore, MBH-MT has also successfully been used to diagnose and guide liver cancer surgery early. In the future, we expect that this powerful tool may be help in the detection and imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma, which may affect a large number of people.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of a shortened daily photoperiod on anxiety-like behaviour, brain oxidative stress, lipid status and fatty acid composition of serum lipids in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced model of diabetes mellitus in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: first group-control group (C12/12); second group-diabetic group (DM12/12; 100 mg/kg STZ); third group-control group exposed to a light/dark cycle 6/18 h (C6/18); fourth group-diabetic group exposed to a light/dark cycle 6/18 h (DM6/18). Anxiety-like behaviour was tested three weeks following STZ injection by elevated plus maze (EPM) and open-field test (OFT). Oxidative stress parameters were measured in the cortex, hippocampus and thalamus, while lipid status and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were measured in the serum. Both EPM and OFT showed a lower degree of anxiety-like behaviour in the DM6/18 vs. DM12/12 group. Lipid peroxidation in the cortex, hippocampus and thalamus was significantly lower in the DM6/18 vs. DM12/12 group (p < 0.05), associated with an increased level of antioxidant enzymes and protein thiols in the cortex and thalamus. In the DM6/18 group, oleic, vaccenic, dihomo-γ-linolenic and docosahexaenoic acid concentrations were significantly higher in comparison to the DM12/12 group. A shortened daily photoperiod alleviates anxiety-like behaviour in diabetic rats by reduced lipid peroxidation and changes in the serum fatty acids profile.

Abstract
Sunlight is a vital element in modulating the central circadian rhythm, such as the regulation of the host's sleep-awake state. Sunlight is also considered to have a significant influence on the circadian rhythm of the skin. Over-exposure or prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to skin photodamage, including hyperpigmentation, collagen degradation, fibrosis, and even skin cancer. Thus, this review will focus on the adverse effects of sunlight on the skin, not only in terms of photoaging but also its effect on the skin's circadian rhythm. Mitochondrial melatonin, regarded as a beneficial anti-aging substance for the skin, follows a circadian rhythm and exhibits a powerful anti-oxidative capacity, which has been shown to be associated with skin function. Thus, the review will focus on the influence of sunlight on skin status, not only in terms of ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced oxidative stress but also its mediation of circadian rhythms regulating skin homeostasis. In addition, this article will address issues regarding how best to unleash the biological potential of melatonin. These findings about the circadian rhythms of the skin have broadened the horizon of a whole new dimension in our comprehension of the molecular mechanisms of the skin and are likely to help pharmaceutical companies to develop more effective products that not only inhibit photoaging but keep valid and relevant throughout the day in future.
