Abstract
Recently, sleep has been recognized as a crucial factor for health and longevity. The daily sleep/wake cycle provides the basis of biorhythm, which controls whole-body homeostasis and homeodynamics. Sleep disturbances can contribute to several physical and psychological disorders, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. The clinical use of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist ketamine began in the 1970s. Over the years, physicians have used it as a short-acting anesthetic, analgesic, and antidepressant; however, in-depth research has revealed new possible applications for ketamine, such as for treating sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disorders. The aim of this narrative review is to examine the literature on the mechanistic role of the antidepressant ketamine in affecting sleep disturbance. Additionally, we discuss the pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic mechanisms of ketamine as an antidepressant and the predictive biomarkers for ketamine’s effect on sleep and cognitive function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to understand how sleep duration could affect depression among elderly in China. METHOD A total of 7103 individuals aged 60 and older were selected from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. A generalized linear mixed-effects model was used to estimate the relationship between sleep duration and depression, and we performed stratified analyses by age: young-old elderly, old-old elderly and oldest-old elderly. RESULTS Short sleep duration significantly incresased CES-D10 depression scores. In addition, the participants with middle sleep duration had higher CES-D10 scores compared to the participants with long sleep duration among young-old elderly, and we found that middle sleep duration was not significantly different from CES-D10 scores after adjustment for demographics, frequencies of activities and Chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that there was a complex association between depression and sleep duration among elderly in China. Different from previous research results on the middle or normal sleep time of the elderly, the middle sleep duration maybe not optimal sleep duration in this study. Investigation of sleep extension to prevent depression may be warranted among the elderly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between sleep duration and cognitive frailty among older adults dwelling in western China. METHODS We used the baseline data from West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study. Sleep duration was classified as short sleep duration (< 6 h), normal sleep duration (6-8 h) and long sleep duration (≥ 9 h). Fried frailty criteria and Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire were used to measure cognitive frailty. Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to estimate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A total of 4093 older adults (age = 67.8 ± 5.9 years, 1708 males and 2385 females) were included in the analysis. The prevalence of cognitive frailty was 11.8% among older adults in western China. Approximately 11.9% participants had short sleep duration (< 6 h); 22.2% had a long sleep duration (≥ 9 h). After adjusting for covariates, only long sleep duration was significantly associated with high risk of cognitive frailty (OR = 2.07, 95%CI = 1.60-2.68, P < 0.001) in western China older adults compared to normal sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS Long sleep duration was significantly related to cognitive frailty in older adults. Intervention for long sleep duration may be helpful to prevent cognitive frailty. Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess whether the nocturnal wear of dentures has an effect on the quality of sleep and oral-health-related quality of life of the edentulous elderly with untreated sleep apnea. METHODS A single-blind randomized cross-over design with two sequences and two periods was used. Participants (n = 77) were randomly assigned either to sequence 1 (nocturnal wear followed by nocturnal nonwear of the denture for 30-30 days) or sequence 2 (nocturnal nonwear followed by nocturnal wear of denture for 30-30 days). The primary sleep outcome was the quality of sleep, assessed through sleep fragmentation measured as Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and respiratory arousal from portable polysomnography. Secondary outcomes were daytime sleepiness, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) and oral-health-related quality of life measured by validated questionnaires. RESULTS The mean paired difference in AHI scores for the period of wearing versus not wearing dentures at night was small 1.0 event per hour (p = 0.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -2.0 to 4.1). The mean respiratory arousal index was higher when wearing dentures at night than when not wearing dentures at night, with a mean paired difference of 2.3 events per hour (p = 0.05; 95% CI = 0.0 to 4.6). No difference in sleepiness and PSQI were noted. Wearing dentures at night resulted in a statistically significantly higher mean score of psychological discomfort when compared to not wearing dentures at night. CONCLUSIONS The results provide some support to usual practice guidelines to remove dentures at night in edentulous elders suffering from sleep apnea. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT01868295.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations between sleep characteristics and cognition are complicated. Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathologies have been proven to be associated with sleep characteristics. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the associations between sleep characteristics and cognitive function and examine the roles of AD pathologies in modulating the association of sleep duration with cognition. METHODS A total of 974 participants who had measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid-β (Aβ), phosphorylated tau (P-tau), total tau proteins (T-tau), cognitive function, and sleep characteristics were included from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE) study. Linear regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of sleep characteristics with cognition. Non-linear regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of sleep habits with cognition. Causal mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediation effects of AD pathologies on cognition. RESULTS The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) total score was significantly negatively correlated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score (p = 0.0176). Long latency (p = 0.0054) and low efficiency (p = 0.0273) were associated with cognitive impairment. Habitual nap behavior was associated with lower MoCA scores (p = 0.0045). U-shaped associations were observed between sleep habits (bedtime and nocturnal sleep duration) and cognition. A causal mediation analysis indicated that P-tau/Aβ42 mediated the association of sleep duration with cognition. CONCLUSION These findings showed sleep characteristics were associated with cognitive functions. Sleep habits (duration, bedtime) had U-shaped associations with cognition. AD core pathologies might partially mediate the influence of sleep duration on cognitive impairments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and cognitive impairment among elderly Chinese people. METHODS generalized linear modeling was used to analyze the baseline data for adults aged 65 years and over (n = 4785) selected from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The two aspects of cognitive impairment assessed in the study were mental status and memory. Sex-stratified logistic regression models were conducted to identify the effect of sleep duration in the different gender groups. RESULTS of all the participants, 49.8% were females and 32.5% aged 75 years and over. Of the participants, 59.7% had short sleep duration (<7 h/day), and 9.0% of them had long sleep duration (>8 h/day). Compared to normal sleep duration, long sleep duration was associated with lower mental status scores (β = -0.43, p = 0.001) and lower memory scores (β = -0.26, p = 0.006). Long sleep duration was associated with lower mental status in both men (β = -0.37, p = 0.033) and women (β = -0.46, p = 0.025), however, only in men was long sleep duration found to be associated with low memory scores (β = -0.26, p = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that long sleep duration was significantly associated with poorer mental status and memory scores in elderly Chinese people. Paying greater attention to the effects of sleep patterns on the risk of cognitive decline may yield practical implications for dementia prevention and health promotion, especially among older women with lower educational attainment, living in rural areas, and those who have long sleep duration.

Abstract
Autistic adults have a high prevalence of sleep problems and psychiatric conditions. In the general population sleep problems have been associated with a range of demographic and lifestyle factors. Whether the same factors contribute to different types of disturbed sleep experienced by autistic adults is unknown and served as the main aim of this study. An online survey was conducted with 493 autistic adults. Demographic information (e.g., age, gender), about lifestyle (e.g., napping), and information about comorbid conditions was collected. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to assess daytime somnolence. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to examine predictors of each subscale score on the PSQI, as well as PSQI and ESS total scores. Results indicated that individuals who reported having a diagnosis of anxiety and insomnia were more likely to have poorer sleep quality outcomes overall. Furthermore, individuals who reported habitually napping had higher daytime dysfunction, increased sleep disturbances, and increased daytime sleepiness. These results provide novel insights into the demographic and lifestyle factors that influence sleep quality and daytime somnolence in autistic adults and can be used for targeted sleep interventions.

Abstract
Over a typical lifespan, the amount of time people spend each day sleeping decreases. Sleep patterns also change as people age. Sleep disorders are common among persons of all ages, and older adults are particularly vulnerable. Development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, is associated with pronounced sleep disruption. This article provides evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and clinical management of sleep disorders that occur during the course of treatment of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The article presents novel interventions and future directions for clinical practice and sleep research, and addresses diversity and inclusivity.

Abstract
Hypertension (HTN) and osteoarthritis (OA) are frequent in middle-aged and elderly people, and the co-occurrence of these two diseases is common. However, the pathogenesis of the multimorbidity of both diseases and the relation with sleep quality, hyperlipemia, and hyperglycemia is unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study to make sense of the multimorbidity of HTN and OA and the relation with sleep quality, hyperlipemia, and hyperglycemia. The relation between sleep quality and OA and its joint effect with hyperlipemia or hyperglycemia was evaluated with logistic regression models. The additive interaction was assessed with the relative excess risk due to interaction (REEI), the attributable proportion (AP), and the synergy index (S). According to this research in a remote rural area, approximately 34.2% of HTN patients are accompanied with OA and 49.1% are suffering poor sleep. Both hyperlipemia/hyperglycemia and sleep quality were related to OA prevalence with crude ORs of 1.43 (95% CI 1.014–2.029) and 1.89 (95% CI 1.411–2.519, P < 0.001) respectively. An observed additive effect was found greater than the sum of the effects of sleep quality and hyperlipemia/hyperglycemia posed on OA prevalence alone. This additive interaction was observed in females (OR = 3.19, 95% CI 1.945–5.237) as well as males ≥ 65 years old (OR = 2.78, 95% CI 1.693–4.557), with RERI, AP, and S significant. Therefore, poor sleep and hyperlipemia/hyperglycemia are associated with OA, and further studies on the additive interaction among females and males ≥ 65 are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Because of inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in people with age-related memory complaints, we examined how self-reports of sleep quality were related to multiple domains of both objective and subjective cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN A cross-sectional study involving analysis of baseline data, collected as part of a clinical trial. MEASUREMENTS Two hundred and three participants (mean age = 60.4 [6.5] years, 69.0% female) with mild memory complaints were asked to rate their sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and their memory performance using the Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ), which measures self-awareness of memory ability. Neurocognitive performance was evaluated using the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Trail Making Test, Buschke Selective Reminding Test, and the Brief Visuospatial Test - Revised (BVMT-R). RESULTS Total PSQI scores were significantly associated with objective measures of sustained attention (CPT hit reaction time by block and standard error by block) and subjective memory loss (MFQ frequency and seriousness of forgetting). The PSQI components of (poorer) sleep quality and (greater) sleep disturbance were related to (worse) sustained attention scores while increased sleep latency and daytime sleepiness were associated with greater frequency and seriousness of forgetting. CONCLUSIONS Sleep quality is related to both objective measures of sustained attention and self-awareness of memory decline. These findings suggest that interventions for improving sleep quality may contribute not only to improving the ability to focus on a particular task but also in reducing memory complaints in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
In the mammalian brain, adult neurogenesis has been extensively studied in the hippocampal sub-granular zone and the sub-ventricular zone of the anterolateral ventricles. However, growing evidence suggests that new cells are not only "born" constitutively in the adult hypothalamus, but many of these cells also differentiate into neurons and glia and serve specific functions. The preoptic-hypothalamic area plays a central role in the regulation of many critical functions, including sleep-wakefulness and circadian rhythms. While a role for adult hippocampal neurogenesis in regulating hippocampus-dependent functions, including cognition, has been extensively studied, adult hypothalamic neurogenic process and its contributions to various hypothalamic functions, including sleep-wake regulation are just beginning to unravel. This review is aimed at providing the current understanding of the hypothalamic adult neurogenic processes and the extent to which it affects hypothalamic functions, including sleep-wake regulation. We propose that hypothalamic neurogenic processes are vital for maintaining the proper functioning of the hypothalamic sleep-wake and circadian systems in the face of regulatory challenges. Sleep-wake disturbance is a frequent and challenging problem of aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Aging is also associated with a decline in the neurogenic process. We discuss a hypothesis that a decrease in the hypothalamic neurogenic process underlies the aging of its sleep-wake and circadian systems and associated sleep-wake disturbance. We further discuss whether neuro-regenerative approaches, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological stimulation of endogenous neural stem and progenitor cells in hypothalamic neurogenic niches, can be used for mitigating sleep-wake and other hypothalamic dysfunctions in aging.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Traffic noise has been associated with poor sleep quality and short sleep duration. This study investigates the association between nighttime road traffic noise at the least and most exposed façades of the residence and redemption of sleep medication. METHODS In a cohort of 44,438 Danes, aged 50-64 at baseline (1993-1997), we identified all addresses from 1987 to 2015 from a national registry and calculated nighttime road traffic noise at the most and least exposed façades. Using Cox Proportional Hazard Models we investigated the association between residential traffic noise over 1, 5, and 10 years before redemption of the first sleep medication prescription in the Danish National Prescription Registry. During a median follow-up time of 18.5 years, 13,114 persons redeemed a prescription. RESULTS We found that 10-year average nighttime exposure to road traffic noise at the most exposed façade was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.00 to 1.10) for Ln greater than 55 as compared to not more than 45 dB, which when stratified by sex was confined to men (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.25). For the least exposed façade the HR for Ln >45 vs ≤35 dB was 1.00, 95% CI (0.95 to 1.05). For the most exposed façade, the overall association was strongest in smokers and physically inactive. CONCLUSIONS Long-term residential nighttime noise exposure at the most exposed façade may be associated with a higher likelihood of redeeming prescriptions for sleep medication, especially among men, smokers, and physically inactive.

Abstract
Aging is accompanied by an increase in the probability of false memory. However, what role sleep plays in the age effect in false memory is less understood. Our study utilized a simplified conjoint recognition (SCR)-based Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm to investigate the role of sleep on false memory in young and older adults. The results showed that sleep effect in false memory was modulated by age, manifested as sleep increased young adults' falsely recognized critical lures, while it reduced older adults'. In addition, in a more fine-grained analysis, the results of multinomial processing tree (MPT) modeling further revealed that young adults were more likely to retrieve memory based on gist traces than older adults, and young adults were more susceptible to guess a probe as "old" than older adults in the sleep condition. Combined findings from the number and ratio of falsely recognized critical lures and the MPT modeling, the current study suggested that sleep might increase young adults' false memory via gist extraction, while it decreased older adults' false memory via verbatim trace consolidation. The study contributes to a comprehensive view on the age-by-sleep effect on false recognition, with the segregation of cognitive components of verbatim memory, gist memory, and response bias.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances and cognitive decline are common in older adults. We aimed to investigate the effects of the total sleep time (TST) and sleep–wake rhythm on executive function and working memory in older adults. In 63 older participants, we measured the TST, wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep timing (midpoint between bedtime and wake-up time) using actigraphy. Executive function was evaluated with the trail making test B (TMT-B) and Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST). The number of back task (N-back task) was used to measure working memory. Participants with a TST ≥ 8 h had a significantly lower percentage of correct answers (% correct) on the 1-back task than those with a TST < 8 h. The % correct on the 1-back task was significantly correlated with the TST, WASO, and sleep timing. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the TST and sleep timing were significant factors of the % correct on the 1-back task. The TMT-B score was significantly correlated with the sleep timing. Category achievement on the WCST was significantly correlated with the standard deviation of the sleep timing. Therefore, a long sleep time and an irregular sleep–wake rhythm could have adverse effects on executive function and working memory in older people.

Abstract
Hormone therapy improves sleep in menopausal women and recent data suggest that transdermal 17β-estradiol may reduce the accumulation of cortical amyloid-β. However, how menopausal hormone therapies modify the associations of amyloid-β accumulation with sleep quality is not known. In this study, associations of sleep quality with cortical amyloid-β deposition and cognitive function were assessed in a subset of women who had participated in the Kronos early estrogen prevention study. It was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which recently menopausal women (age, 42-58; 5-36 months past menopause) were randomized to (1) oral conjugated equine estrogen (n = 19); (2) transdermal 17β-estradiol (tE2, n = 21); (3) placebo pills and patch (n = 32) for 4 years. Global sleep quality score was calculated using Pittsburgh sleep quality index, cortical amyloid-β deposition was measured with Pittsburgh compound-B positron emission tomography standard uptake value ratio and cognitive function was assessed in four cognitive domains 3 years after completion of trial treatments. Lower global sleep quality score (i.e., better sleep quality) correlated with lower cortical Pittsburgh compound-B standard uptake value ratio only in the tE2 group (r = 0.45, P = 0.047). Better global sleep quality also correlated with higher visual attention and executive function scores in the tE2 group (r = -0.54, P = 0.02) and in the oral conjugated equine estrogen group (r = -0.65, P = 0.005). Menopausal hormone therapies may influence the effects of sleep on cognitive function, specifically, visual attention and executive function. There also appears to be a complex relationship between sleep, menopausal hormone therapies, cortical amyloid-β accumulation and cognitive function, and tE2 formulation may modify the relationship between sleep and amyloid-β accumulation.

Abstract
Microglia, the resident macrophage cells of the central nervous system (CNS), are involved in a myriad of processes required to maintain CNS homeostasis. These cells are dynamic and can adapt their phenotype and functions to the physiological needs of the organism. Microglia rapidly respond to changes occurring in their microenvironment, such as the ones taking place during stress. While stress can be beneficial for the organism to adapt to a situation, it can become highly detrimental when it turns chronic. Microglial response to prolonged stress may lead to an alteration of their beneficial physiological functions, becoming either maladaptive or pro-inflammatory. In this review, we aim to summarize the effects of chronic stress exerted on microglia through the neuroendocrine system and inflammation at adulthood. We also discuss how these effects of chronic stress could contribute to microglial involvement in neuropsychiatric and sleep disorders, as well as neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Background Although a U-shaped association between sleep duration and all-cause mortality has been found in general population, its association in the elderly adults, especially in the oldest-old, is rarely explored. Methods In present cohort study, we prospectively explore the association between sleep duration and all-cause mortality among 15,092 participants enrolled in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) from 2005 to 2019. Sleep duration and death information was collected by using structured questionnaires. Cox regression model with sleep duration as a time-varying exposure was performed to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The dose-response association between them was explored via a restricted cubic spline function. Results During an average follow-up of 4.51 (standard deviation, SD: 3.62) years, 10,768 participants died during the follow-up period. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 89.26 (11.56) years old. Compared to individuals with moderate sleep duration (7–8 hours), individuals with long sleep duration (> 8 hours) had a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.09–1.18), but not among individuals with short sleep duration (≤ 6 hours) (HR: 1.02, 95%CI: 0.96–1.09). Similar results were observed in subgroup analyses based on age and gender. In the dose-response analysis, a J-shaped association was observed. Conclusions Sleep duration was associated with all-cause mortality in a J-shaped pattern in the elderly population in China.

Abstract
Objective: To examine the linkage between smoking and sleep disturbance in Indonesia Methods: This study used data from the 2014 Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), drawn from a sample of 38,879 individuals from 15,067 households living in 262 communities. Sleep disturbance was measured by ten validated indicators of sleep quality and sleep deprivation adopted from the PROMIS (Patient Recorded Outcomes Measurement Information System), developed by the USC Center for Economic and Social Research (CESR), USA. Hierarchical ordered logistic regression was used to account for unobserved factors in village communities. Results: In 2014, the prevalence of smoking in Indonesia remained high at thirty-two percent of the population, or about ninety million active smokers. Nearly half of smokers were young adult males. Eight of every ten males who reported sleep disturbance were smokers. Current smokers' odds of facing sleep disturbance were almost one-and-one-half times higher than those of nonsmokers (OR = 1.39, p-value < 0.01), and among heavy smokers, the odds were almost double (OR = 1.91, p-value < 0.01). These findings were controlled for stressors, chronic diseases, social support and sociodemographic characteristics as well as unobserved factors in village communities. Conclusion: The substantial relationship between smoking and sleep disturbance suggests that policies that address the issue of sleep disturbance through preventing tobacco use among young adults should be a public health priority in Indonesia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Examine subjective sleep quality and inflammation among healthy older adults participating in the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention (ARCLI). METHODS Data was taken from a sub-set of 232 participants aged between 60-70 years (M = 65.88 ± SD 4.08 years) who participated in the baseline assessment phase of the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention (ARCLI) study. Subjective sleep was assessed via the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ). Inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, hs-CRP) were derived from whole blood. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to examine associations between each of the four sleep outcome variables and inflammatory outcomes, examined as a group and following gender stratification. RESULTS Difficulties getting to sleep were independently associated with higher IL-2 [F(1,156) = 4.62, adjusted R2 = 0.02, p = 0.03] and IL-1β [F(1,141) = 8.52, adjusted R2 = 0.05, p = 0.004] (whole group). Difficulties getting to sleep were associated with greater IL-1β [males: F(1,58) = 7.36, adjusted R2 = 0.097 p = 0.009; females: F (1,81) = 4.25, R2 = 0.038, p = 0.04], and negatively associated with hs-CRP (women) [F (1,129) = 4.71, R2 = 0.028, p = 0.032]. Abstract
Background Lack of awareness of cognitive decline (ACD) is common in late-stage Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Recent studies showed that ACD can also be reduced in the early stages. Methods We described different trends of evolution of ACD over 3 years in a cohort of memory-complainers and their association to amyloid burden and brain metabolism. We studied the impact of ACD at baseline on cognitive scores’ evolution and the association between longitudinal changes in ACD and in cognitive score. Results 76.8% of subjects constantly had an accurate ACD (reference class). 18.95% showed a steadily heightened ACD and were comparable to those with accurate ACD in terms of demographic characteristics and AD biomarkers. 4.25% constantly showed low ACD, had significantly higher amyloid burden than the reference class, and were mostly men. We found no overall effect of baseline ACD on cognitive scores’ evolution and no association between longitudinal changes in ACD and in cognitive scores. Conclusions ACD begins to decrease during the preclinical phase in a group of individuals, who are of great interest and need to be further characterized. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep disorders as a preclinical symptom of synucleinopathies become more prevalent in older adults. Synucleinopathies might be caused by the abnormal aggregation of alpha-synuclein in the brain, which was indicated by alpha-synuclein levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We aimed to investigate associations of sleep characteristics with CSF alpha-synuclein in older adults. METHODS Our study recruited 536 cognitively intact individuals (aged between 40 and 90 years old) from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle study. Sleep behaviors were assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and total alpha-synuclein in CSF was measured by enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay. We used multiple linear and non-linear regression models for research. RESULTS Significant non-linear associations of CSF alpha-synuclein with sleep time and duration were revealed. Individuals who went to bed and fell asleep too early or late tended to have lower CSF alpha-synuclein (reflection point for time to bed and fall asleep were 10:26 p.m. and 10:40 p.m.). Lower CSF alpha-synuclein was also observed in individuals with either excessive or insufficient sleep duration (reflection point: 7.24 hours). Besides, overall poor sleep quality (β = -0.0621; P = 0.0242), longer sleep latency (β = -0.0415; P = 0.0174) and lower sleep efficiency (β = 0.0036; P = 0.0017) showed linear associations with lower CSF alpha-synuclein. Sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction were not significantly associated with CSF alpha-synuclein. INTERPRETATION Poor sleep was associated with lower levels of CSF alpha-synuclein in older adults, which may provide new insight into the prevention of synucleinopathies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep disorders ultimately result in sleep deficiency and poor-quality adversely impacts the immune system, glucose metabolism, body weight control, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular function, cognitive function, psychological stability, work productivity, quality of life, and social safety. Sleep disorders are very common among the elderly and are often comorbid with other diseases such as dementia, and further accelerating the underlying neurodegenerative processes. Initial studies have not clearly revealed the relationship between sleep disorders and dementia. Nonetheless, recent findings have suggested that insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are closely associated with dementia and perhaps they could be good predictors of occurrence of dementia and optimal treatments for sleep deficiencies may prevent or delay the onset dementia. METHODS Here, we conducted a systematic review based on the criteria of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine on the association of dementia in elderlies with sleep disorder, namely insomnia and OSA. We included 7432 studies and analyzed a total of 14 publications after applying appropriate exclusion criteria. RESULTS We found that OSA patients had a large tendency to develop and/or experience accelerations of both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and also vascular dementia, whereas insomnia patients only develop and/or experience accelerations of AD. This may be reflected in the fact that AD and vascular dementia have similar and at the same time also different mechanisms of action. Several studies have also revealed that treating sleep disorders in elderly patients prevented or delayed the onset of dementia, mitigating the progression of symptoms in patients who already manifested dementic symptoms and even reversing neurodegeneration in particular brain areas. DISCUSSION Currently, the general medical consensus has poorly addressed the role of sleep disorders in exacerbating the risk of dementia. Critically, studies such as the present one emphasizes that the treatment of sleep disorders could be one the preventive measures to evade or to improve dementia symptoms. Additionally, elderly individuals often manifest different sleep deficiency symptoms than younger ones. Given this, an improved age-specific categorization and evaluation methods for sleep deficiency need to be implemented in diagnosing dementia in order to enable personalized assessments and treatments. Collectively, these findings may also assist to improve efforts in predictively detecting and eventually treating dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have found that poor sleep quality appeared to be negatively associated with quality of life in older adults, but the mechanism underlying this association remained unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine whether mental health mediated the association between sleep quality and quality of life among rural elderly and to explore the moderated role of physical activity between mental health and quality of life. METHODS Data were extracted from the baseline survey of rural elderly household health services in Shandong province, in which 3,243 older adults aged 60 years and above were included. The moderated mediation models were examined using SPSS PROCESS Version 3.4 software, in which the mediation variable was mental health, and the moderation variable was physical activity. RESULTS We found that mental health partially mediated the effect of sleep quality on quality of life [indirect effect = -0.158, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = -0.185, -0.133], with the mediating effect accounting for 51% of the total effect. The indirect effect was moderated by physical activity (β = 0.056, p < 0.001), and a greater effect was observed among older adults with lower level of physical activity. LIMITATIONS We included two mediators in one model, and interpretation of the observed associative direction was limited. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity moderated the indirect effect of mental health on association between sleep quality and quality of life. Encouraging the rural elderly to increase physical activity appropriately might improve the quality of life for the elderly with poor sleep quality and mental health problems.

Abstract
Lately, Drosophila has been favored as a model in sleep and circadian rhythm research due to its conserved mechanism and easily manageable operation. These studies have revealed the sophisticated parameters in whole-day sleep profiles of Drosophila, drawing connections between Drosophila sleep and human sleep. In this study, we tested several sleep deprivation protocols (mechanical shakes and light interruptions) on Drosophila and delineated their influences on Drosophila sleep. We applied a daytime light-deprivation protocol (DD) mimicking jet-lag to screen drugs that alleviate sleep deprivation. Characteristically, classical sleep-aid compounds exhibited different forms of influence: phenobarbital and pentobarbital modified total sleep time, while melatonin only shortened the latency to sleep. Such results construct the basis for further research on sleep benefits in other treatments in Drosophila. We screened seven herb extracts, and found very diverse results regarding their effect on sleep regulation. For instance, Panax notoginseng and Withania somnifera extracts displayed potent influence on total sleep time, while Melissa officinalis increased the number of sleep episodes. By comparing these treatments, we were able to rank drug potency in different aspects of sleep regulation. Notably, we also confirmed the presence of sleep difficulties in a Drosophila Alzheimer’s disease (AD) model with an overexpression of human Abeta, and recognized clear differences between the portfolios of drug screening effects in AD flies and in the control group. Overall, potential drug candidates and receipts for sleep problems can be identified separately for normal and AD Drosophila populations, outlining Drosophila’s potential in drug screening tests in other populations if combined with the use of other genetic disease tools.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Poor sleep quality and reduced sleep duration impact over half of older adults and are associated with adverse health outcomes, such as multiple chronic conditions (multimorbidity) and reduced longevity. Our objective was to examine the relationship between sleep behaviours and multimorbidity in Canada. METHODS We analysed data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), a cross-sectional national health survey of community-dwelling adults over the age of 45 years. A total of 30,011 participants had physiological and psychosocial data collected at baseline. Sleep measures included self-reported sleep duration (short: <6 h; normal: 6-8 h; long: >8 h) and sleep quality (dissatisfied/very dissatisfied; neutral; satisfied/very satisfied). Multimorbidity was defined using two definitions (public health and primary care) and two cut-points (2 or more and 3 or more chronic conditions). RESULTS Approximately 70% were living with multimorbidity using the primary care definition (females: 67.9%; males 57.9%), whereas approximately 30% were living with multimorbidity using the public health definition (females: 30.9%; males: 24.0%). Adjusted analyses indicated that the odds of multimorbidity were higher for participants who selfreported either short or long sleep duration, as well as dissatisfaction with sleep quality. Associations were stronger among younger age groups (45-54 years and 55-64 years). CONCLUSIONS Disrupted sleep may be a risk factor for multimorbidity across sexes and age groups. It is necessary to understand the potential impact of sleep on the risk of multimorbidity to inform both clinical and public health guidelines for the prevention and management of this major health issue.

Abstract
Cognitive models of pain propose that catastrophic thinking is negatively associated with chronic pain. However, pain catastrophizing is a complex phenomenon requiring a multivariate examination. This study estimates the effects of mood variables (anxiety and depression) on pain catastrophizing in older adults with chronic pain. A postal survey addressing pain aspects was sent to 6611 people ≥ 65 years old living in south-eastern Sweden. Pain catastrophizing was measured using the pain catastrophizing scale. Anxiety and depression were assessed using two subscales of the general well-being schedule. Data were analysed using a path analysis approach. A total of 2790 respondents (76.2 ± 7.4 years old) reported chronic pain (≥three months). The mediation model accounted for 16.3% of anxiety, 17.1% of depression, and 30.9% of pain catastrophizing variances. Pain intensity, insomnia, number of comorbidities, and lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, and weight) significantly affected both pain catastrophizing and mood. Anxiety (standardized path coefficient (bstd) = 0.324, p < 0.001) in comparison to depression (bstd = 0.125, p < 0.001) had a greater effect on pain catastrophizing. Mood mediated the relationship between pain catastrophizing and pain-related factors accounting for lifestyle and sociodemographic factors.

Abstract
Among the diverse cell types included in the general population named glia, astrocytes emerge as being the focus of a growing body of research aimed at characterizing their heterogeneous and complex functions. Alterations of both their morphology and activities have been linked to a variety of neurological diseases. One crucial physiological need satisfied by astrocytes is the cleansing of the cerebral tissue from waste molecules. Several data demonstrate that aquaporin-4 (AQP-4), a protein expressed by astrocytes, is crucially important for facilitating the removal of waste products from the brain. Aquaporins are water channels found in all district of the human organism and the most abundant isoform in the brain is AQP-4. This protein is involved in a myriad of astrocytic activities, including calcium signal transduction, potassium buffering, synaptic plasticity, astrocyte migration, glial scar formation and neuroinflammation. The highest density of AQP-4 is found at the astrocytic domains closest to blood vessels, the endfeet that envelop brain vessels, with low to zero expression in other astrocytic membrane regions. Increased AQP-4 expression and loss of polarization have recently been documented in altered physiological conditions. Here we review the latest findings related to aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) on this topic, as well as the available knowledge on pharmacological tools to target AQP-4.

Abstract
AIM Experienced by many older adults, insomnia is a significant public health problem that requires the attention of health-care professionals and researchers. This study aimed to identify insomnia and its risk factors among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in Denizli, Turkey. The study sample consisted of 360 elderly individuals aged 60 years and older who were admitted to one of six family health centres for any reason between 29 March 2016 and 17 June 2016. Data were collected by using a descriptive form for the elderly and the Insomnia Severity Index. The χ2 test was used to compare independent variables and insomnia status. Logistic regression analysis was used for the variables that were found to be significant at the end of the single-variable analysis. RESULTS The mean age of the subjects, all of whom lived at home, was 69.52 ± 8.36 years. Insomnia was quite common among them (51%), and its severity was low (8.51 ± 5.56). At the end of logistic regression analysis, a moderate perception of health (OR = 10.859, 95%CI: 3.532-33.385) and the number of medications used (OR = 3.326, 95%CI: 1.014-10.907) were identified as risk factors for insomnia. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this study, we can state that insomnia is common among older adults. Therefore, older adults who are admitted to health-care institutions should be evaluated for insomnia. Factors identified as affecting insomnia were health perception and the number of medications used. Given that health perception and polypharmacy are associated with chronic disease management, helping the elderly to effectively manage chronic diseases may alleviate insomnia.

Abstract
Objective Snoring is a common physical condition in active workers. However, the link between snoring and health problems is poorly understood. Therefore, the prevalence of snoring in Japanese workers and the relationships between snoring and lifestyle-related diseases were investigated. Methods This was a retrospective, single-center, cross-sectional study. The results of a single year's medical examinations were investigated for 25,141 Japanese active office workers 20 to 59 years old. The presence and duration of snoring were investigated using a personal computer at a medical interview before the medical checkup. The snoring frequency was investigated for each gender. In addition, the relationships between snoring and hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia were also analyzed. Results Men (21,774) were a mean 46±6 years old with a snoring prevalence of 43%. Women (3,367) were a mean 46±6 years old with a snoring prevalence of 20%. In men, snoring was an independent comorbid factor of hypertension and dyslipidemia. In particular, a long snoring vintage (multiple years) was an independent comorbid factor for hypertension [odds ratio (OR), 1.14; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.05-1.24; p=0.002; and OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.07-1.34; p=0.001]. In women, snoring was not an independent comorbid factor for lifestyle-related diseases when adjusted for the age and body mass index. Conclusion Snoring was shown to be a frequent pathophysiology in active workers. It was a health indicator for active workers, and especially in men, intervention for snoring may reduce the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases.

Abstract
A simple sleep monitoring measurement method is presented in this paper, based on a simple, non-invasive motion sensor, the Passive InfraRed (PIR) motion sensor. The easy measurement set-up proposed is presented and its performances are compared with the ones provided by a commercial, ballistocardiographic bed sensor, used as reference tool. Testing was conducted on 25 nocturnal acquisitions with a voluntary, healthy subject, using the PIR-based proposed method and the reference sensor, simultaneously. A dedicated algorithm was developed to correlate the bed sensor outputs with the PIR signal to extract sleep-related features: sleep latency (SL), sleep interruptions (INT), and time to wake (TTW). Such sleep parameters were automatically identified by the algorithm, and then correlated to the ones computed by the reference bed sensor. The identification of these sleep parameters allowed the computation of an important, global sleep quality parameter: the sleep efficiency (SE). It was calculated for each nocturnal acquisition and then correlated to the SE values provided by the reference sensor. Results show the correlation between the SE values monitored with the PIR and the bed sensor with a robust statistic confidence of 4.7% for the measurement of SE (coverage parameter k = 2), indicating the validity of the proposed, unobstructive approach, based on a simple, small, and low-cost sensor, for the assessment of important sleep-related parameters.

Abstract
Individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) present with a wide variety of symptoms, including sleep disruption and sleep disorders. Conversely, disordered sleep has been associated with an increased risk of developing AD. Both conditions individually have adverse effects on attention, which can be further divided into selective, sustained, divided, and alternating attention. The neural mechanisms underpinning sleep problems in AD involve the disruption of the circadian system. This review comprehensively discusses the types of attention impairments, the relationship between AD pathology and sleep disruption, and the effect of sleep issues on attention in AD. Recommendations for future research include addressing the lack of consistency among study designs and outcomes, and the need to continue exploring the biology of sleep and attention in AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noise from wind turbines (WTs) is associated with annoyance and, potentially, sleep disturbances. OBJECTIVES Our objective was to investigate whether long-term WT noise (WTN) exposure is associated with the redemption of prescriptions for sleep medication and antidepressants. METHODS For all Danish dwellings within a radius of [Formula: see text] heights and for 25% of randomly selected dwellings within a radius of [Formula: see text] heights, we estimated nighttime outdoor and low-frequency (LF) indoor WTN, using information on WT type and simulated hourly wind. During follow-up from 1996 to 2013, 68,696 adults redeemed sleep medication and 82,373 redeemed antidepressants, from eligible populations of 583,968 and 584,891, respectively. We used Poisson regression with adjustment for individual and area-level covariates. RESULTS Five-year mean outdoor nighttime WTN of [Formula: see text] was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) = 1.14 [95% confidence interval (CI]: 0.98, 1.33) for sleep medication and HR = 1.17 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.35) for antidepressants (compared with exposure to WTN of [Formula: see text]). We found no overall association with indoor nighttime LF WTN. In age-stratified analyses, the association with outdoor nighttime WTN was strongest among persons [Formula: see text] of age, with HRs (95% CIs) for the highest exposure group ([Formula: see text]) of 1.68 (1.27, 2.21) for sleep medication and 1.23 (0.90, 1.69) for antidepressants. For indoor nighttime LF WTN, the HRs (95% CIs) among persons [Formula: see text] of age exposed to [Formula: see text] were 1.37 (0.81, 2.31) for sleep medication and 1.34 (0.80, 2.22) for antidepressants. CONCLUSIONS We observed high levels of outdoor WTN to be associated with redemption of sleep medication and antidepressants among the elderly, suggesting that WTN may potentially be associated with sleep and mental health. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP3909.

Abstract
Hospitalized patients frequently have disordered and poor-quality sleep due to a variety of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. These include frequent nighttime intrusions, insomnia related to pain and unfamiliar environments, dark conditions during the day with loss of natural light, and disruption of the natural sleep cycle due to illness. Sleep wake disturbances can result in a deleterious consequence on physical, emotional, and cognitive status, which may impact patient satisfaction, clinical recovery, and hospital length of stay. Despite this, clinicians frequently fail to document sleep disturbances and are generally unaware of the best practices to improve sleep quality in the hospital. A PubMed search was conducted using the terms: ("sleep and hospitalized patients") and ("sleep and hospitalization") to review the published data on the topic of sleep in hospitalized medical patients. The search was limited to English-language articles published between 2000 and 2018. Subsequent PubMed searches were performed to clarify the data described in the initial search, including the terms "hospital sleep protocols," "hospitalized patients sleep documentation," and "hospitalized patients sleep quality". The purpose of this review is to discuss sleep disturbances in hospitalized patients with a focus on causes of sleep disturbance, the effect of poor-quality sleep, high risk populations, considerations for surveillance and prevention, and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options for treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to analyze the association between digestive symptoms and sleep disturbance, and to determine if any digestive symptoms are related to sleep disturbance. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 5792 subjects surveyed in a community-based cohort. Subjects provided information regarding the quality of sleep as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), as well as digestive symptoms as assessed by the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). Logistic regressions were used to examine factors associated with sleep quality. RESULTS The mean PSQI global score of the no sleep disturbances group (n = 4948) was 3.92 (SD = 2.14), while that of the sleep disturbance group (n = 844) was 11.18 (SD = 2.17). The association between digestive symptoms and sleep disturbance was evaluated by logistic regression after adjusting for cofounding factors. The results revealed that sleep disturbances were associated with digestive symptoms (aOR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.22-1.36), especially abdominal pains (aOR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.19-2.25), acid regurgitation (aOR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.17-1.86), abdominal distension (aOR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.42-2.28), and eructation (aOR = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.24-2.03). CONCLUSIONS Digestive symptoms and sleep disturbances seem to be associated. These results will help medical professionals to effectively diagnose and manage patients with sleep disturbance. Furthermore, subsequent studies using comprehensive longitudinal data should be conducted to confirm the results of the present study.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies report that more than half of the people over the age of 65 years suffer from variable sleep problems. In this study, we conducted a cohort study to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, muscle mass, and function within a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population. Our study population consisted of residents living in the township central hospital of suburban Tianjin, China. We measured muscle strength and walking speed. We divided sleep duration into the following four groups: <7 hours, 7-8 hours, >8-9 hours, and >9 hours. A total of 902 participants completed the 3-year follow-up. We observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and fall risk. Compared with the 7-8-hour group, fall risk within the <7-hour group was 3.67 (2.59, 5.42) times higher and fall risk within the >9-hour group was 2.35 (1.29, 3.52) times higher. After adjustment, muscle mass declined by -6.82% (-11.27%, -3.83%) in the <7-hour group. In summary, we observed a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and falls. Short sleep duration has a negative relationship with muscle mass decline in a community-dwelling, elderly Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In elderly patients, women have better qualities of sleep than men in objective parameters; however, women subjectively complain more about sleep disturbances than men. We performed visual scoring and spectral analysis of sleep electroencephalograms to explain these gender differences in the degree of arousal, the most representative marker in insomnia. METHODS A total of 354 participants (≥60 years old) were recruited from a Korean community underwent nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG). A Fast Fourier transform was used for the spectral analysis of the NPSG data. Relative power was calculated as absolute power of each band divided by total absolute power. Difference in total sleep time (D_TST) is obtained by subtracting the total sleep time reported in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) from the TST measured by the NPSG. RESULTS A total of 75 participants (women, 51) were finally analyzed. Women had higher PSQI, longer sleep latencies, sleep inefficiencies, and daytime dysfunctions compared to men. The percentage of stage 1 sleep was higher in men versus in women, whereas percentage of stage 3 sleep was higher in women than in men ( P = .001; P = .001). Women had higher relative alpha and beta powers than men during nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep ( P = .017; P = .015). During NREM sleep, beta power was negatively correlated with D_TST ( R = -0.250, P = .033), and relative alpha power in stage 3 sleep was positively correlated with sleep latency in PSQI ( R = 0.267, P = .022). CONCLUSION Spectral analysis showed that women had more disturbed sleep than men. The result from the spectral analysis may explain hyperarousal in elderly women.

Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to explore the associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with physical activity (PA). In this cross-sectional study, participants were 894 elderly individuals (mean age 80 ± 3 years; 56.0% women) living in nursing homes. PA, sleep duration, and sleep quality (based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)) were self-reported. The associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with PA at the nursing home level were analyzed using generalized estimating equations with clustering. Participants reporting short sleep duration (<6 h; OR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.25–0.80) were less likely to report sufficient PA, yet those reporting long sleep duration (>9 h; OR = 2.61; 95% CI 1.35–5.02) and good sleep quality (<5 points; OR = 1.59; 95% CI 1.19–2.12) were more likely to report sufficient PA. When sleep duration and sleep quality were entered into the same model, the same associations remained. This study shows that elderly individuals who report short sleep duration are less likely to meet PA guidelines, while those who report long sleep duration and good sleep quality are more likely to meet PA guidelines. Strategies aiming to improve sleep duration and sleep quality are warranted.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the relationship of sleep duration on workdays and non-workdays with BP components [systolic BP (SBP), diastolic (DBP), pulse pressure (PP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP)] among Chinese hypertensive adults. Methods: The study included 3,376 hypertensive patients without antihypertensive treatment. Self-reported sleep durations on workdays and non-workdays were measured by the questionnaire. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association of sleep duration with BP components. Results: Overall, compared with a sleep duration of 5-9 h, individuals who slept ≥10 h on both workdays and non-workdays were positively correlated with SBP [β (95% CIs) = 3.99 (1.06, 6.93) and 4.33 (1.79, 6.87)] and PP [β (95% CIs) = 3.25 (0.71, 5.79) and 3.05 (0.85, 5.25)], but not with DBP. Moreover, individuals who slept ≥10 h only on non-workdays had higher MAP [β (95% CIs) = 2.30 (0.63, 3.97)]. The stratified analyses showed that subjects with a BMI ≥24 kg/m2 in the longer sleep duration group (≥10 h) only on workdays compared to the reference group had higher SBP, DBP and MAP (all P for interaction <0.05). The effect of longer sleep duration on BP components showed no difference in the following subgroups: sex, age, smoking and drinking (all P for interaction >0.05). Conclusion: Compared with a sleep duration of 5-9 h, longer sleep duration (≥10 h) on workdays and non-workdays was associated with high SBP and PP among Chinese hypertensive adults without antihypertensive treatment.

Abstract
Background and Purpose Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common complaint among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Several factors have been associated with EDS in PD, especially neuropsychiatric symptoms. This study aimed to determine the relationships between neuropsychiatric symptoms, sociodemographic and clinical parameters, and EDS in PD. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 85 patients with PD. All patients underwent socioeconomic and clinical data evaluations followed by a psychiatric interview and a neurological examination, including the assessment of sleep features. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of EDS, which was defined as a score higher than 10 on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Binary logistic regression was performed in order to describe the predictors of EDS. Results We found that EDS affects 40% of PD patients and is associated with older age, restless legs syndrome, depressive and anxious symptoms, and worse sleep quality. In the multivariate analysis, older age, levodopa use, and worse sleep quality remained as significant predictors of EDS in PD. Conclusions Nighttime sleep problems, older age, and levodopa use are significantly associated with EDS in PD. A careful assessment and the management of sleep problems in PD patients might help to improve their quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association between sleep duration on workdays or non-workdays and unsatisfactory blood pressure (BP) control in Southern China. METHODS We analyzed 4370 hypertensive patients, including their self-reported sleep duration on workdays or non-workdays and their BP. Unsatisfactory BP control was defined as systolic BP of ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic BP of ≥90 mm Hg. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and unsatisfactory BP control. RESULTS Overall, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios of unsatisfactory BP control risk were 1.59 (95% confidence interval, 1.14-2.22) for 9-10 hours of sleep on workdays and 1.47 (95% confidence interval, 1.07-2.03) for ≥10 hours of sleep on non-workdays compared with a sleep duration of 5-9 hours. No association between a short sleep duration and unsatisfactory BP control was noted. The association between a longer sleep duration (≥10 hours) and unsatisfactory BP control was more pronounced among women aged 65-70 years, with a body mass index ≥ 24 kg/m2. CONCLUSION People with hypertension who slept 9-10 hours on workdays and ≥10 hours on non-workdays were more likely to have unsatisfactory BP control compared with those with a sleep duration of 5-9 hours; these associations tended to vary by age, sex, and body mass index. These findings indicate that a longer sleep duration might be a way to predict uncontrolled BP in hypertensive adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate psychometric properties of the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ) in a sample of Korean older adults. METHODS One-hundred ninety two participants aged 65 and over completed interview-based questionnaires about chronotype, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, a small subset of subjects completed a 7-day sleep diary and actigraphy measurements. RESULTS Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) scores were significantly negatively correlated with Midpoint of sleep on free days corrected for sleep debt accumulated through weekdays (MSFsc) (r=-0.45, p<0.01) assessed by the MCTQ. MSFsc using the MCTQ was significantly positively correlated with MSFsc assessed by both the sleep diary (r=0.74, p<0.05) and actigraphy (r=0.76, p<0.05). Additionally, MSFsc assessed by the MCTQ was significantly positively correlated with insomnia (r=0.26, p<0.01), depression (r=0.25, p<0.01), and anxiety (r=0.18, p<0.05). Finally, based on MEQ scores, we derived a cut-off score for the MCTQ that distinguishes morning type and other types (intermediate/evening types) in older adults. CONCLUSION The results of these studies supported the validity of the MCTQ in Korean older adults. Additionally, while sleep rhythms in elder adults may be more advanced, eveningness tendency may be still important and indicative of sleep and psychological disturbance.
