Prevalence of depression among pregnant women and its correlation with the choice of delivery method

Background

Caesarean section is usually limited to cases where natural vaginal delivery is not possible or poses a serious risk to the foetus and mother. Psychological health of mothers is likely to play an important role in the method of delivery. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of depression in pregnant women and its relationship with the choice of delivery method and other demographic parameters.

Methods

In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 250 mothers referring to the hospitals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, were selected, and their demographic information and level of depression was collected using a questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate the correlation between depression, method of delivery and other associated parameters.

Results

Among 250 pregnant women, 225 (90%) had no depression, 25 (10%) had mild depression and no moderate or severe depression was reported in any pregnant mother. Also, 146 (58.4%) were willing to have a caesarean section and 104 (41.6%) wanted to have a normal delivery. The choice of delivery method was not significantly associated with depression. Analyzes showed that increasing maternal age is associated with a greater tendency to caesarean delivery. The incidence and higher depression scores of mothers showed a significant association with the history of previous abortions.

Conclusion

Although in this study no significant association was observed between depression in pregnant mothers and the choice delivery, due to the high prevalence of caesarean section in the country and its progression to higher percentages, it seems that the design and implementation of effective programs and interventions is required.

Reference values for nerve conduction studies of the peroneal, tibial, and sural nerve derived from a large population-based cohort: Associations with demographic and anthropometric characteristics-The Maastricht study

INTRODUCTION/AIMS

Nerve conduction studies (NCSs) are widely used to support the clinical diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. The aims of this study were to obtain reference values for peroneal, tibial, and sural NCSs and to examine the associations with demographic and anthropometric factors.

METHODS

In 5099 participants (aged 40-79 years) without type 2 diabetes of The Maastricht Study, NCSs of peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves were performed. Values for compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and sensory nerve action potential amplitude, nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and distal latency were acquired. The association of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and height with NCS values was determined using uni- and multivariate linear regression analyses.

RESULTS

Detailed reference values are reported per decade for men and women. Significantly lower NCVs and longer distal latencies were observed in all nerves in older and taller individuals as well as in men. In these groups, amplitudes of the tibial and sural nerves were significantly lower, whereas a lower peroneal nerve CMAP was only significantly associated with age. BMI showed a multidirectional association. After correction for anthropometric factors in the multivariate analysis, the association between sex and NCS values was less straightforward.

DISCUSSION

These values from a population-based dataset could be used as a reference for generating normative values. Our findings show the association of NCS values with anthropometric factors. In clinical practice, these factors can be considered when interpreting NCS values.

Factors Influencing the Decision-Making Process for Undergoing Invasive Prenatal Testing

Invasive prenatal testing, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling offer insights into fetal genetic integrity and health, but carry inevitable minor risks of miscarriage and infection, thus complicating the decision-making process for parents. Previous research has revealed several factors that influence the decision to undergo invasive prenatal testing, including demographic, clinical, and psychological aspects, and attitudes towards testing. Informed choice, involving understanding options and aligning them with personal values, is crucial, with healthcare providers playing a key role in offering unbiased information. This systematic review aims to gather and synthesize literature data on the above factors to draw conclusions to aid antenatal care providers in supporting couples to make more informed decisions about their prenatal care. A systematic search was performed in PubMed and PsycInfo databases using the appropriate keywords and an in-depth evaluation of the studies retrieved followed. Finally, 17 articles were eligible for our review investigating the decision-making process of invasive prenatal testing. Factors like maternal age, education, and ethnicity are pivotal during the decision-making process. Clinical characteristics also influence decisions and women with pregnancies categorized as high-risk or those who have undergone fertility treatment display a preference for invasive testing. There seems to be a direct correlation between a woman's willingness to consider pregnancy termination, deeply rooted in psychological and moral stances, and the inclination to undergo invasive testing. In the patient decision-making process, the provision and depth of knowledge are of paramount importance. A comprehensive understanding facilitates more informed decisions. Finally, attitudes towards termination of pregnancy, as another factor influencing the decision-making process, reveal a nuanced landscape where personal beliefs, religious considerations, legal restrictions, and perspectives on disability converge. Within this complex context, religion emerges as an important determinant, shaping individuals' views on the morality of abortion. This review sheds light on the most important factors influencing the couples' consent for invasive prenatal testing. Healthcare professionals must identify which factors are critical in every specific case among several sociodemographic, clinical, emotional, and religious factors. Thus, they will be able to provide balanced and comprehensive information to help couples under this stressful procedure. We advocate for a patient-centered multidisciplinary approach while navigating couples through the intricate landscape of decision-making concerning invasive prenatal testing.

What Predicts Graduate Public Health Student Success? Evidence for Admission Committees in a Post-Affirmative Action Landscape

OBJECTIVE

A severe staff shortage and a dearth of professionals from underrepresented backgrounds in the public health workforce are contributing to poor health outcomes in the United States. Schools and programs can mitigate these problems by admitting more graduate public health students overall and from underrepresented backgrounds. We identified predictors of foundational graduate public health course grades and graduate grade point average (GPA), sharing evidence to remove application factors that are admission barriers and do not predict student outcomes.

METHODS

We conducted a linear regression analysis on demographic and academic factors from 564 graduate public health applications for students at the University at Buffalo who received their degree from January 1, 2016, to February 1, 2021, analyzing age, race and ethnicity, sex, income, undergraduate degree, verbal and quantitative Graduate Record Examination (GRE) percentiles, and undergraduate GPA. Outcomes were grades in foundational public health courses and cumulative graduate GPA.

RESULTS

Undergraduate GPA was the best predictor of graduate public health student success, explaining nearly 7% of foundational public health course grades and 29% of graduate GPA. Higher undergraduate GPA contributed to higher course grades and graduate GPA. GRE scores explained <1% of student outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings add to the growing body of research showing that standardized test scores may not predict graduate student outcomes and provide further evidence for the field of public health to consider removing this admission barrier. By doing so, institutions could admit more students to graduate public health programs who can bring needed skills to the market, further diversifying the workforce and public health faculty, to better meet population health needs.

Loneliness and its associations with demographic, lifestyle, social and parental factors among adolescents in Timor-Leste

Adolescent loneliness is prevalent and has serious adverse impacts on mental and physical health outcomes. This study aimed at examining factors associated with loneliness among school-going adolescents. The country of interest is a low-income country, Timor-Leste, where empirical studies are lacking. Data from the Global School-Based Student Health Survey Timor-Leste 2015 (n = 3455) were used for secondary analyses. An ordered probit model was utilized to assess demographic, lifestyle, social, and parental factors correlated with different levels of loneliness (no loneliness, moderate loneliness, and severe loneliness). Approximately 46.3% of adolescents felt moderately lonely and about 13.5% felt severely lonely. Older adolescents were more likely to experience severe and moderate loneliness than younger adolescents. Going hungry and being bullied were associated with an increased likelihood of being severely and moderately lonely. Adolescents had a higher probability of experiencing moderate and severe loneliness if they had sleep difficulties and were physically active. Having understanding parents was positively associated with the likelihood of severe loneliness. In conclusion, a large proportion of adolescents in Timor-Leste have feelings of loneliness, which have been found to be associated with demographic, lifestyle, social, and parental factors. Policymakers should recognize the correlated factors of loneliness in order to formulate a more effective intervention strategy.

Factors Associated With Worsened Mental Health of Health Care Workers in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Survey Study

BACKGROUND

Health care workers (HCWs) in Canada have endured difficult conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many worked long hours while attending to patients in a contagious environment. This introduced an additional burden that may have contributed to worsened mental health conditions.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we examine the factors associated with worsened mental health conditions of HCWs as compared to before the start of the pandemic.

METHODS

We use data from a survey of HCWs by Statistics Canada. A regression model is used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of worsened mental health after the start of the pandemic. The estimated odds ratio (OR) is associated with different independent variables that include demographics (age, sex, immigration status, and geographic area), occupational factors (work status, occupational group, and exposure category), and different access levels to personal protective equipment (PPE).

RESULTS

Of 18,139 eligible participants surveyed, 13,990 (77.1%) provided valid responses. We found that HCWs younger than 35 years old were more likely (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03-1.27; P=.01) to exhibit worsened mental health as compared to the reference group (35-44 years old). As for sex, male HCWs were less likely (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.67-0.86; P<.001) to exhibit worsened mental health as compared to female HCWs. Immigrant HCWs were also less likely (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.51-0.64; P<.001) to exhibit worsened mental health as compared to nonimmigrant HCWs. Further, HCWs working in Alberta had the highest likelihood of exhibiting worsened mental health as compared to HCWs working elsewhere (Atlantic provinces, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia, and Northern Territories). Frontline workers were more likely (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.16-1.38; P<.001) to exhibit worsened mental health than nonfrontline HCWs. Part-time HCWs were less likely (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.76-0.93; P<.001) to exhibit worsened mental health than full-time HCWs. HCWs who reported encountering COVID-19 cases were more likely (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.41-1.70; P<.001) to exhibit worsened mental health as compared to HCWs who reported no contact with the disease. As for PPE, HCWs who never had access to respirators, eye protection, and face shields are more likely to exhibit worsened mental health by 1.31 (95% CI 1.07-1.62; P<.001), 1.51 (95% CI 1.17-1.96; P<.001), and 1.41 (95% CI 1.05-1.92; P=.02) than those who always had access to the same PPE, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Different HCW groups experienced the pandemic differently based on their demographic and occupational backgrounds as well as access to PPE. Such findings are important to stakeholders involved in the planning of personalized support programs and aid mental health mitigation in future crises. Certain groups require more attention.

Seasonality and Genotype Diversity of Human Rhinoviruses during an Eight-Year Period in Slovenia

Due to the high socioeconomic burden of rhinoviruses, the development of prevention and treatment strategies is of high importance. Understanding the epidemiological and clinical features of rhinoviruses is essential in order to address these issues. Our study aimed to define the seasonality and molecular epidemiology of rhinoviruses in Slovenia. Over a period of eight years, a total of 20,425 patients from sentinel primary healthcare settings and sentinel hospitals were examined for a panel of respiratory viruses in the national programme for the surveillance of influenza-like illnesses and acute respiratory infections. The patients were from all age groups and had respiratory infections of various severity. Infection with a rhinovirus was confirmed using an RT-rPCR in 1834 patients, and 1480 rhinoviruses were genotyped. The molecular analysis was linked to demographical and meteorological data. We confirmed the year-round circulation of rhinoviruses with clear seasonal cycles, resulting in two seasonal waves with peaks in spring and autumn. High levels of genotype variability and co-circulation were confirmed between and within seasons and were analysed in terms of patient age, the patient source reflecting disease severity, and meteorological factors. Our study provides missing scientific information on the genotype diversity of rhinoviruses in Slovenia. As most previous investigations focused on exclusive segments of the population, such as children or hospitalised patients, and for shorter study periods, our study, with its design, size and length, contributes complementary aspects and new evidence-based knowledge to the regional and global understanding of rhinovirus seasonality and molecular epidemiology.

Factors influencing living space utilization among older Afro-Colombian adults

OBJECTIVES

Investigate the factors influencing life space utilization in older Afro-descendant adults residing in Tumaco, Colombia - a marginalized region of the country.

DESIGN

This cross-sectional study included 388 Afro-descendant older adults. The study assessed living space using the Life Space Assessment (LSA) scale and collected demographic data. Cognitive levels were measured with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Yesavage scale. Socio-emotional indicators were determined with the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS). The research employed linear and logistic regression models for data analysis.

RESULTS

On average, participants scored 27.0 on the LSA scale. A lack of perceived income resulted in a 10.44-point decrease on the LSA scale. For each unit increase in the MOS-Instrumental Dimension score, the LSA score increased by 0.52 points (95% CI 0.17-0.87). As for cognitive performance (MMSE scale), each one-point increase resulted in a 0.69 decrease in the LSA score (95% CI -1.25 to -0.12).

CONCLUSION

Socioeconomic disadvantages limit living space utilization, particularly in the Afro-descendant population. Yet, social support can enhance living space use despite environmental and economic constraints.

Satisfaction with remote consultations in primary care during COVID-19: a population survey of UK adults

BACKGROUND

Mode of access to primary care changed during the COVID-19 pandemic; remote consultations became more widespread. With remote consultations likely to continue in UK primary care, it is important to understand people's perceptions of remote consultations and identify potential resulting inequalities.

AIM

To assess satisfaction with remote GP consultations in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic and identify demographic variation in satisfaction levels.

DESIGN AND SETTING

A cross-sectional survey from the second phase of a large UK-based study, which was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHOD

In total, 1426 adults who self-reported having sought help from their doctor in the past 6 months completed an online questionnaire (February to March 2021). Items included satisfaction with remote consultations and demographic variables. Associations were analysed using multivariable regression.

RESULTS

A novel six-item scale of satisfaction with remote GP consultations had good psychometric properties. Participants with higher levels of education had significantly greater satisfaction with remote consultations than participants with mid-level qualifications (B = -0.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.41 to -0.23) or those with low or no qualifications (B = -1.65, 95% CI = -2.29 to -1.02). People living in Wales reported significantly higher satisfaction compared with those living in Scotland (B = -1.94, 95% CI = -3.11 to -0.78), although caution is warranted due to small group numbers.

CONCLUSION

These findings can inform the use and adaptation of remote consultations in primary care. Adults with lower educational levels may need additional support to improve their experience and ensure equitable care via remote consultations.

Disparities and social determinants of periodontal diseases

Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent in populations worldwide and are a major global public health problem, with major negative impacts on individuals and communities. This study investigates evidence of disparities in periodontal diseases by age groups, gender, and socioeconomic factors. There is ample evidence that these diseases disproportionally affect poorer and marginalized groups and are closely associated with certain demographics and socioeconomic status. Disparities in periodontal health are associated with social inequalities, which in turn are caused by old age, gender inequality, income and education gaps, access to health care, social class, and other factors. In health care, these factors may result in some individuals receiving better and more professional care compared to others. This study also reviews the potential causes of these disparities and the means to bridge the gap in disease prevalence. Identifying and implementing effective strategies to eliminate inequities among minorities and marginalized groups in oral health status and dental care should be prioritized in populations globally.

Association of mean pericoronary adipose tissue attenuation with different demographic factors in a subgroup of patients without coronary artery disease stratified by sex, body mass index, and age

Background

In patients without coronary artery disease (CAD), few studies have evaluated the association between mean pericoronary adipose tissue attenuation (PCATMA) and patient-based demographic factors, for example, age or sex. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the association between PCATMA and various demographic factors in patients without CAD.

Methods

In this case-control study, the 806 patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography and were not diagnosed with CAD between July 2020 and July 2022 were retrospectively enrolled. Their PCATMA values of the proximal right coronary artery were measured automatically. Patients without CAD were stratified according to sex, body mass index (BMI), and age, and the relationship between PCATMA and different clinical characteristics was explored using Fisher's exact test or Chi-squared test and independent t-tests or Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney U tests.

Results

Compared to non-smoking women [-88.00 (-95.00, -81.00) HU], women who smoked [-84.00 (-94.00, -78.00) HU, P=0.037] had higher PCATMA values and a positive correlation with PCATMA (rs=0.101, P=0.036). Compared to non-hypertensive patients with BMI ≥24.91 kg/m2 [-87.00 (-95.00, -81.00) HU], hypertensive patients with BMI ≥24.91 kg/m2 [-84.00 (-92.00, -78.00) HU, P=0.004] had higher PCATMA values, and a positive correlation with PCATMA (rs=0.144, P=0.004). In a subgroup of patients without CAD stratified by sex, BMI, and age, PCATMA values were all higher in patients with dyslipidemia (women, men, BMI ≥24.91 kg/m2, BMI <24.91 kg/m2, age ≥55 years, and age <55 years: -82.00, -82.00, -81.50, -82.00, -81.00 and -83.50 HU, respectively) than in those without dyslipidemia (-89.00, -89.00, -89.00, -90.00, -90.00 and -88.00 HU, respectively; all P<0.001) and showed a positive relationship (rs=0.328, 0.339, 0.342, 0.326, 0.367, and 0.298, respectively; all P<0.001).

Conclusions

Higher PCATMA attenuation values were observed in patients with dyslipidemia, smoking women, and hypertensive patients with BMI ≥24.91 kg/m2, suggesting that PCATMA values can be used to detect patients at high risk for future events with CAD even if they do not currently have atherosclerosis.

Deciphering prognostic indicators in AQP4-IgG-seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: An integrative review of demographic and laboratory factors

BACKGROUND

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the central nervous system, characterized by optic neuritis and myelitis. The complex nature of NMOSD and varied patient response necessitates personalized treatment and efficient patient stratification strategies.

OBJECTIVE

To provide a comprehensive review of recent advances in clinical and biomarker research related to aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-immunoglobulin G (IgG)-seropositive NMOSD prognosis and identify key areas for future research.

METHODS

A comprehensive review and synthesis of recent literature were conducted, focusing on demographic factors and laboratory investigations.

RESULTS

Demographic factors, such as age, ethnicity, and sex, influence NMOSD prognosis. Key biomarkers for NMOSD prognosis include homocysteine, antinuclear antibodies, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, thyroid hormone levels, neurofilament light chain levels, and serum glial fibrillary acidic protein might also predict NMOSD attack prognosis.

CONCLUSION

Further investigation is required to understand sex-related disparities and biomarker inconsistencies. Identification and understanding of these factors can aid in the development of personalized therapeutic strategies, thereby improving outcomes for NMOSD patients. Future studies should focus on unifying research design for consistent results.

The Impact of Comorbidities and Demographic Factors on Ejection Fraction

Heart failure (HF) presents an increasingly significant problem as the population ages. The cause of HF plays a significant role in determining treatment options and outcomes. It is worth noting that several studies have identified gender disparities in both morbidity and mortality, which may suggest differing causes of HF. The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of various factors, including demographics and comorbidities, on ejection fraction (EF). The objectives of this study involve implementing preventive measures, ensuring timely diagnosis, and implementing interventions that target risk factors and specific comorbidities. These efforts aim to improve the prognosis for individuals affected by heart failure. The main method consists of linear regression. The demographic factors under scrutiny are gender and education, while the comorbidities of interest encompass valvulopathy, ischemia, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The main results consist of the fact that high education is associated with a 12.8% better EF on average, while among the factors with a negative role analyzed, ischemia is the most harmful, being 12.8% lower on average. Factors with a smaller impact are smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol. Diabetes does not seem to affect EF.

Contextualizing black emerging adults' perceptions of neighborhood quality

The ways in which Black emerging adults perceive and evaluate their neighborhoods may be impacted by a host of social and political factors that interplay with their social identities, the social identities of other urban residents, and their time in the area. Early literature on Black emerging adults' perceived neighborhood quality (PNQ) tended to make comparisons to White people and to focus disproportionately on the perceptions of low-income Black people residing in predominately racial/ethnic minority and underresourced communities. Subsequent work on subjective neighborhood assessment has considered specific features of neighborhoods, such as safety or disorder, but a general sense of the quality of one's neighborhood features is still underexplored. The current study adapts Connerly and Marans' (1985) PNQ model to explore the relations between social identities and locations, neighborhood sociostructural features, time in the area, and PNQ among Black urban-residing emerging adults. Block-wise regression results suggest that education and partner status were associated with PNQ. Perceptions of the percentage of Black neighbors and Census Bureau proportions of residents in the zip code who are poor were also associated with PNQ. Length of residence in the neighborhood was marginally associated with PNQ while length of residence in the city/town was not significantly associated with PNQ. For young Black women, combined household income was marginally associated with PNQ, but neighborhood sociostructural features were the strongest contributors to PNQ. In contrast, education was the only significant contributor to PNQ for young Black men. We discuss the ways that the social positions of young Black residents and their neighbors may impact their experiences and evaluations of urban areas.

Determinants of Consumption of Vegetables among the Spanish Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

The consumption of vegetables is one of the fundamentals of a healthy diet. The purposes of the present study were to describe the frequency of consumption of vegetables in the general Spanish population and to explore the relations between the consumption of vegetables and sex, age, cohabitation circumstances, educational level, and body mass index (BMI).

METHODS

An analytical cross-sectional study was accomplished based on data from the European Health Survey in Spain (2020).

RESULTS

A total of 20,745 (52.1% women) subjects with a median age of 54 years old were included. Only 2.8% of them ate vegetables at least three times a day. The adjusted generalized linear model showed that being a woman increased the odds of consuming vegetables at least three times a day by 1.666 times (p < 0.001). Not cohabiting as a couple decreased the odds by 0.783 (p < 0.001). Having studied at a university increased the odds by 1.812 times (p < 0.001) and possessing a certificate of higher education by 1.408 (p = 0.030). Being overweight decreased the odds by 0.924 (p = 0.006). For every additional year of age, the odds of consuming vegetables at least three times a day increased by 1.3% (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The vast majority of the general Spanish population did not consume an optimal amount of vegetables. Women, people with higher levels of education, and older individuals reported having a more frequent intake of vegetables. Not cohabiting as a couple and being overweight were related to a less frequent intake of vegetables.

Associations of SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold values with age, gender, sample collection setting, and pandemic period

Cycle threshold (Ct) values in COVID-19 reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests estimate the viral load in biological samples. Studies have investigated variables associated with SARS-CoV-2 viral load, aiming to identify factors associated with higher transmissibility. Using the results from tests performed between May/2020-July/2022 obtained from the database of a referent hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, we investigated associations between Ct values and patient's age, gender, sample collection setting and pandemic period according to the predominant SARS-CoV-2 variant locally. We also examined variations in Ct values, COVID-19 incidence, mortality, and vaccination coverage over time. The study sample included 42,741 tests. Gender was not significantly associated with Ct values. Age, sample collection setting and the pandemic period were significantly associated with Ct values even after adjustment to the multivariable model. Results showed lower Ct values in older groups, during the Gamma and Delta periods, and in samples collected in emergency units; and higher Ct values in children under 10 years old, home-based tests, during the Omicron period. We found evidence of a linear trend in the association between age and Ct values, with Ct values decreasing as age increases. We found no clear temporal associations between Ct values and local indicators of COVID-19 incidence, mortality, or vaccination between February/2020-November/2022. Our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 Ct values, a proxy for viral load and transmissibility, can be influenced by demographic and epidemiological variables.

Aging at home: factors associated with independence in activities of daily living among older adults in Norway-a HUNT study

Background

Maintaining independence in activities of daily living (ADL) is essential for the well-being of older adults. This study examined the relationship between demographic and living situation factors and ADL independence among community-dwelling older adults in Norway.

Methods

Data was collected in Norway between 2017 and 2019 as part of the fourth wave of the ongoing Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) survey, sent to all citizens in Trøndelag county over 20 years of age, which is considered representative of the Norwegian population. Included in the current cross-sectional study were 22,504 community-living individuals aged 70 years or older who completed the survey and responded to all items constituting the ADL outcome measure. Group differences in ADL independence were examined with Chi Square tests, while crude and adjusted associations with ADL independence were examined with logistic regression analyses. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results

The participants reported a high degree of independence in primary ADL and slightly lower in instrumental ADL. In the fully adjusted analyses, ADL independence was associated with lower age, female gender, higher levels of education and income, higher subjective well-being, having no chronic or disabling disease, and having someone to talk to in confidence. Surprisingly, women who were married had higher likelihood of ADL independence than unmarried women, whereas married men had lower likelihood of ADL independence than unmarried men.

Conclusion

In addition to known demographic and disease-related factors, the social context affects independence in ADL even in a society that offers advanced health and homecare services to all older adults equally. Furthermore, the same social setting can have differential effects on men and women. Despite the healthcare system in Norway being well-developed, it does not completely address this issue. Further improvements are necessary to address potential challenges that older adults encounter regarding their social connections and feelings of inclusion. Individuals with limited education and income are especially susceptible to ADL dependency as they age, necessitating healthcare services to specifically cater to this disadvantaged demographic.

Infant feeding practices in three Latin American countries in three decades: what demographic, health, and economic factors are relevant?

Introduction

Studies in Latin America have focused either on analyzing factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) or infant formula (IF).

Purpose

Analyze the association between economic, sociodemographic, and health factors with EBF, mixed milk feeding (MixMF), and exclusive use of IF in three Latin American and Caribbean countries in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

Methods

Cross-sectional time-series study using data from Demographic and Health Surveys between the 1990s and 2010s in Colombia (1995-2010), Haiti (1994-2017), and Peru (1996-2012) accounting for a sample of 12,775 infants under 6 months. Hierarchical logistic multilevel regression models were used to estimate the adjusted association between infant feeding outcomes (EBF, MixMF, exclusive use of IF) and contextual level DHS survey decade (1990s, 2000s and 2010s) and economic factors (Gross Domestic Product by purchasing power parity, female wage and salaried workers, labor force participation rate female) as well as individual level sociodemographic (maternal age, maternal education, number of children in the household, wealth index, mother living with a partner, area of residence, mother working outside of home), and health factors (breastfed in the first hour, C-section).

Results

Factors associated with EBF cessation were c-section (OR: 0.76; 95%CI: 0.64, 0.92), mothers working outside of the home (OR: 0.79; 95%CI: 0.69, 0.90), families in the highest income quintile (OR: 0.64; 95%CI: 0.49, 0.84), and female wage and salaried workers (OR: 0.92; 95%CI: 0.91, 0.94). MixMF was associated with women with higher education (OR: 1.54; 95%CI: 1.21, 1.97), mother working outside of the home (OR: 1.26; 95%CI: 1.10, 1.43), c-section (OR: 1.37; 95%CI: 1.15, 1.62), families in the highest income quintiles (OR: 2.77; 2.10, 3.65). and female wage and salaried workers (OR: 1.08;95% CI: 1.05, 1.09). Exclusive use of IF was associated with a mother working outside of the home (OR: 2.09; 95%CI: 1.41, 3.08), c-section (OR: 1.65; 95%CI: 1.09, 2.51), families in the highest income quintiles (OR: 12.08; 95% CI: 4.26, 34.28), the 2010s (OR: 3.81; 95%CI: 1.86, 7.79), and female wage and salaried workers (OR: 1.12; 95%CI: 1.07, 1.16).

Discussion/Conclusion

Factors related to women empowerment and gender equality jeopardized EBF and favored the exclusive use of IF in Latin America. Therefore, workplace interventions to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding practices are key to reducing exclusive use of IF.

Cardiomyopathy: Evaluating Disparities in Place of Death in the United States Using the CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) Database Over 22 Years

Background The human experience involves the inevitable end of life, whether sudden or expected. Ensuring a dignified end-of-life encounter necessitates understanding influential factors. Cardiomyopathy, a group of heart muscle diseases, has varying mortality implications, including heart failure and arrhythmias. Disparities in place of death (hospital, home, or hospice) can significantly alter the end-of-life care for a patient. Methods The aim of this study is to identify variations in death locations for U.S. cardiomyopathy patients between 1999 and 2020, based on age, gender, race, and census region, utilizing the CDC WONDER ( CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) database, which contains a wide array of public health information. Data were categorized by age, gender, race, and location, and further subcategorized according to place of death. Statistical analysis was done via R programming software. Result The aggregate data of 528,401 cardiomyopathy-related deaths from 1990 to 2020 were obtained. Findings revealed age, gender, and regional disparities in death location. Notably, cardiomyopathy is found to be prevalent in the 75+ years age group, male gender, and people belonging to Caucasian descent, and maximal in the Southern census area. The study's logistic regression analysis unveiled a significant association between demographic factors and death locations. Conclusion This research underscores the significance of understanding disparities in the place of death for cardiomyopathy patients, shedding light on demographic influences and paving the way for patient-centered end-of-life care approaches.

COVID-19 Epidemiology during Delta Variant Dominance Period in 45 High-Income Countries, 2020-2021

The SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant, first identified in October 2020, quickly became the dominant variant worldwide. We used publicly available data to explore the relationship between illness and death (peak case rates, death rates, case-fatality rates) and selected predictors (percentage vaccinated, percentage of the population >65 years, population density, testing volume, index of mitigation policies) in 45 high-income countries during the Delta wave using rank-order correlation and ordinal regression. During the Delta-dominant period, most countries reported higher peak case rates (57%) and lower peak case-fatality rates (98%). Higher vaccination coverage was protective against peak case rates (odds ratio 0.95, 95% CI 0.91-0.99) and against peak death rates (odds ratio 0.96, 95% CI 0.91-0.99). Vaccination coverage was vital to preventing infection and death from COVID-19 during the Delta wave. As new variants emerge, public health authorities should encourage the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination and boosters.

[The rise of attractiveness of specialty "General Practice" for graduates of medical universities]

The choice of specialty by graduate of medical university can be promoted by particular social, demographic and personal characteristics. Purpose of the study is to investigate demographic, social and personal characteristics of students in residency on specialty "General Medical Practice" in the Russian Federation. The sociological, statistical and analytical methods are applied. The sampling for survey consisted of 81 respondents. The specialty "General Medical Practice" is chosen mainly by women residing in city, non-married and without children. They are not characterized by participation in public life and they are characterized by the presence of hobbies (hobbies). The choice is conditioned by multidisciplinary nature of medical care and scope of professional horizons. They are attracted by treatment work and are less interested in pedagogy and science. In perspective, 80% of female respondents are going to get another specialty. More than 70% of respondents plan to work in out-patient conditions and predominantly in state sector of health care. For women, main goals of further professional training are improvement in main and adjoining specialties and career promotion. And in educational program, internal diseases are of greatest interest. The preferred forms of training are internships and e-learning. The main direction of improving educational process is increasing of scope of practical training. The comparative analysis of study results with data of previous publications was implemented. The factors influencing commitment to specialty are revealed. The proposals increasing attractiveness of general medical practice for graduates of medical universities and keeping in specialty after residency are formulated.

Nerve ultrasound reference values in children and adolescents: Echogenicity and influence of anthropometric factors including hand volume

Background

Nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) reference values in high-resolution ultrasound for children and adolescents are influenced by demographic and anthropometric factors such as age, height and weight.

Objectives

The influence of hand volume as an additional morphometric factor was evaluated and nerve echogenicity was analyzed in a prospective cross-sectional study.

Methods

CSA were measured in 30 healthy children and adolescents from 2 to 17 years in the median, ulnar, radial, tibial, peroneal and sural nerves. Height, weight, age, handedness and gender were recorded, the volume of the hands was measured using the water displacement method. The intra-nerve CSA variability (INV), left/right ratios and absolute differences were calculated. Age groups were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The influence of demographic factors was analyzed using Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression. Echogenicity and fraction of black were determined for each nerve segment.

Results

Nerve CSA values were consistently lower than those reported for adults and correlated in all measured nerve sites with age, height, weight and hand volume. Weight showed the highest correlation coefficient (R = .95) with the best fitting model predicting CSA. Correlation coefficients were higher in a linear than in a logarithmic model. Ratios were stable, the absolute differences increased with age and were significantly different between age groups. Most nerves showed a mixed or hypoechogenic pattern in echogenicity analysis, hyperechogenicity is less frequently observed.

Conclusions

Nerve CSA in children and adolescents is lower than in adults and increases proportionally during growth with a constant INV and left/right ratio in different age groups. Weight and age are predominant anthropometric factors predicting nerve size. Hand volume is correlated with nerve size, but does not predict CSA independently. Echogenicity can provide additional information on nerve structure.

Association Between Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors and Diagnosis of Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: An Analysis of the National Cancer Database

Introduction Lung cancer is a prevalent and potentially lethal cancer. The stage at initial presentation for diagnosis predicts mortality and helps to guide treatment options. Thus, it is critical to determine what factors impact the stage of cancer at diagnosis. This study sought to determine if certain socioeconomic and demographic factors are associated with receiving an early (Stage 0-I) or advanced (Stage IV) diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Using the National Cancer Database (NCDB), 1,149,539 patients were identified as having an NCDB Analytic Stage Group diagnosis of Stage 0-I (early) versus Stage IV (advanced) NSCLC between 2004 and 2018. Patients with early and delayed diagnoses were compared based on specific characteristics including sex, race, ethnicity, number of comorbid conditions, insurance status, median annual income, level of education, geographic location, and reporting facility. Using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 28 (Released 2021; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), the data underwent analysis using binary multivariate logistic regression, chi-square analyses, and one-way ANOVA. Results Factors associated with an advanced diagnosis of NSCLC include being male, Black, Native American, or Hispanic. Compared to patients with at least one comorbid condition, those without comorbid conditions are more likely to present with advanced disease. Patients with private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or other government insurance are all less likely to present with advanced-stage cancer than patients without insurance. Compared to patients in the lowest median household income quartile, those in the second and fourth quartiles are diagnosed earlier. Patients living in areas where a higher proportion of residents lack a high school diploma are more likely to present with advanced NSCLC. Additionally, living in the Midwest and Western United States and presenting to Community Cancer programs are associated with advanced disease at initial presentation. Conclusions Factors that were associated with the advanced presentation of NSCLC included being male, Black, Native American, or Hispanic, having a lack of comorbid conditions or insurance, earning a lower median annual income, and living in a zip code where a higher proportion of residents lack a high school diploma. Additionally, residing in the Midwest and Western United States and seeking care at Community Cancer programs were associated with advanced disease at initial presentation. Understanding that certain socioeconomic and demographic factors impact the stage at initial diagnosis of NSCLC can allow for targeted intervention strategies aimed at the most at-risk individuals, areas, and facilities.

The Association of Demographic Characteristics with the Rate of Weight Loss and Changes in Nutritional Factors (Albumin, Vitamin D3, Ferritin) One Year after One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass

Background

The effect of bariatric surgery on weight loss (WL) of patients with severe obesity is an established finding. However, some studies have shown that other factors such as demographic characteristics can also be involved in the extent of success and relapse of obesity. Thus, this study was performed to determine the association of demographic characteristics with the rate of weight loss and changes in nutritional factors one year after one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB).

Materials and Methods

In this cross-sectional study, 121 patients undergoing OAGB were investigated. Patients' body mass index (BMI), nutritional factors (including levels of albumin, vitamin D3, and serum ferritin), and demographic characteristics were measured one year after the surgery.

Results

The BMI one year after surgery was significantly lower than before surgery (47.12 ± 5.08 kg/m2 vs. 29.42 ± 3.86 kg/m2; P value <0.001). WL was 37.37 ± 6.70%. In addition, the serum level of vitamin D3 one year after surgery with the mean of 44.54 ± 17.25 was significantly higher than its level before surgery with the mean of 38.13 ± 14.42 (P value <0.001). WL in less than 50 years old and married patients was significantly higher than WL in over 50 years old and single patients (P value <0.05). Moreover, the decrease in serum ferritin level with the mean of 1.90 ± 0.56 ng/ml in women was significantly higher than its decrease with the mean of 3.02 ± 0.94 ng/ml in men (P value = 0.003).

Conclusion

Some demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and marital status seem to affect the rate of weight loss or ferritin level one year after OAGB.

APOE Gene Associated with Dementia-Related Traits, Depression, and Anxiety in the Hispanic Population

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a main cause of dementia, is commonly seen in aging populations with a strong genetic component. AD is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders; it is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous disease. Specific demographic factors and genetic variants have been identified in non-Hispanic populations; however, limited studies have observed the Hispanic population. Therefore, we focused on investigating a known gene, APOE, associated with AD-related phenotypes and two psychiatric diseases (depression and anxiety) within the U.S. Hispanic population in our current study. A total of 1382 subjects were studied based on data collected from the Texas Alzheimer's Research and Care Consortium (TARCC, N = 1320) and the Initial Study of Longevity and Dementia from the Rio Grande Valley (ISLD-RGV, N = 62). Questionnaires regarding demographics, medical history, and blood/saliva samples were collected. We genotyped the APOE gene. The current findings indicated that APOE-ε4 was associated with not only AD (p < 0.0001) but also with anxiety (p < 0.0001) and depression (p = 0.0004). However, APOE-ε3 was associated with depression (p = 0.002) in the Hispanic population. We provide additional evidence in which APOE-ε4 increased the risk for AD in Hispanics. For the first time, APOE alleles show increased risks for anxiety and depression in Hispanics. Further research is warranted to confirm the current findings.

Correlations of demographic factors and hygiene factors with face mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggestion for future research: A cross-sectional study of adults in Malaysia

Background

Despite the many touted benefits of community-wide face mask wearing, numerous communication campaigns and mandates, some people still refuse or fail to wear face masks in public settings. Hence, exposing themselves and others to the risk of infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and raise the potential for public healthcare systems to become overwhelmed once again. This study investigates demographic and hygiene factors related to propensity of face mask wearing in public settings.

Design and methods

The self-administered online questionnaire contained the independent variables (demographic and hygiene factors) and the outcome variable (frequency of face mask wearing). Participants were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling techniques. Seven hundred and eight responses were collected from Malaysian adults between May and June 2020. The demographic characteristics of participants, differences in the frequency of face mask wearing across demographic factors and hierarchical multiple regression were analyzed.

Results

The propensity of face mask wearing differs by gender. The hierarchical multiple regression revealed that being female, having personal protective equipment available and frequently washing hands were positively correlated with the frequency of face mask wearing. Moreover, the availability of personal protective equipment and the frequency of hand washing accounted for greater variation of the frequency of face mask wearing than gender.

Conclusion

Future studies should adopt established psychosocial models in conjunction with normative and cultural factors for a better understanding of underlying motivations to engage in preventive health behaviors to shape improved hygienic and societal precautionary protective behaviors in different contexts.

Predictors of sexual and reproductive health self-care based on demographic factors in adolescent girls

OBJECTIVES

Global access to sexual and reproductive health is an essential human right, especially to adolescent girls. For improvement sexual and reproductive self-care needs to determine the related factors on utilization and acceptance by adolescents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the SRH self-care and its predictors among adolescent girls in Neyshabur city at Northeast of Iran.

METHODS

The present study was a cross-sectional correlational study performed on 265 girl students from 15 girls' high schools in Neyshabour, in Razavi Khorasan province, Northeastern Iran. The sampling method was multistage probability sampling. Data were collected using demographic information and female adolescents' sexual reproductive self-care scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression model. The significant level was p<0.05 using SPSS₁₆.

RESULTS

The results of the present study showed that the mean score of the sexual reproductive health self-care was 61.23 of 100 ± 10.5, it had a significantly relationship with fathers education high school [B=-7.241 CI: (-11.088 to -3.393)], diploma [B=-7.221 CI: -10.707 to -3.735] than academic. The rank of children birth in the family first [B=6.012 CI: (0.931-11.092)] second [B=4.436 CI: (1.437-8.309)] than third and above. Economic status of household Excellent [B=3.159 CI: (2.193-8.511)], Favorable [B=5.866 CI: (1.355-10.378)], relatively favorable [B=2.705 CI: (1.802-7.213)] than poor level economic.

CONCLUSIONS

sexual and reproductive health is associated to father's education, the rank of children birth in the family, and economic status. So these variables will help to strategies and progress educational programs.

Prediction of Multimorbidity in Brazil: Latest Fifth of a Century Population Study

BACKGROUND

Multimorbidity is characterized by the co-occurrence of 2 or more chronic diseases and has been a focus of the health care sector and health policy makers due to its severe adverse effects.

OBJECTIVE

This paper aims to use the latest 2 decades of national health data in Brazil to analyze the effects of demographic factors and predict the impact of various risk factors on multimorbidity.

METHODS

Data analysis methods include descriptive analysis, logistic regression, and nomogram prediction. The study makes use of a set of national cross-sectional data with a sample size of 877,032. The study used data from 1998, 2003, and 2008 from the Brazilian National Household Sample Survey, and from 2013 and 2019 from the Brazilian National Health Survey. We developed a logistic regression model to assess the influence of risk factors on multimorbidity and predict the influence of the key risk factors in the future, based on the prevalence of multimorbidity in Brazil.

RESULTS

Overall, females were 1.7 times more likely to experience multimorbidity than males (odds ratio [OR] 1.72, 95% CI 1.69-1.74). The prevalence of multimorbidity among unemployed individuals was 1.5 times that of employed individuals (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.49-1.53). Multimorbidity prevalence increased significantly with age. People over 60 years of age were about 20 times more likely to have multiple chronic diseases than those between 18 and 29 years of age (OR 19.6, 95% CI 19.15-20.07). The prevalence of multimorbidity in illiterate individuals was 1.2 times that in literate ones (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.24-1.28). The subjective well-being of seniors without multimorbidity was 15 times that among people with multimorbidity (OR 15.29, 95% CI 14.97-15.63). Adults with multimorbidity were more than 1.5 times more likely to be hospitalized than those without (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.50-1.56) and 1.9 times more likely need medical care (OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.91-1.97). These patterns were similar in all 5 cohort studies and remained stable for over 21 years. A nomogram model was used to predict multimorbidity prevalence under the influence of various risk factors. The prediction results were consistent with the effects of logistic regression; older age and poorer participant well-being had the strongest correlation with multimorbidity.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study shows that multimorbidity prevalence varied little in the past 2 decades but varies widely across social groups. Identifying populations with higher rates of multimorbidity prevalence may improve policy making around multimorbidity prevention and management. The Brazilian government can create public health policies targeting these groups, and provide more medical treatment and health services to support and protect the multimorbidity population.

Trends and projections of ovarian cancer incidence in Hong Kong: A population-based study

INTRODUCTION

This study analyzed the incidence of ovarian cancer in Hong Kong and its association with age, calendar period and birth cohort, made projections through 2030, and attributed differences in new cancer cases to demographic and epidemiologic changes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Incidence data for ovarian cancer were obtained from the Hong Kong Cancer Registry. We employed the age-period-cohort modeling approach to investigate the association between ovarian cancer incidence and age in Hong Kong women, with particular emphasis on examining the changing trends of period and cohort effects on incidence. We projected the incidence of ovarian cancer in Hong Kong between 2018 and 2030 and attributed the rise in new cancer cases to epidemiologic and demographic shifts.

RESULTS

Between 1990 and 2017, a total of 11 182 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Hong Kong. Crude and age-standardized rates increased from 8.2 and 7.8 per 100 000 person-years to 16.3 and 11.5 per 100 000 person-years, respectively. New cases of ovarian cancer rose from 225 in 1990 to 645 in 2017. We observed an increased risk of ovarian cancer throughout the study period and in the post-1940 birth cohort. The projected incidence rate and new cases of ovarian cancer are expected to continue growing due to demographic and epidemiologic changes such as fertility patterns and lifestyle factors, with an estimated 981 cases in 2030.

CONCLUSIONS

The period risk and cohort risk of ovarian cancer among Hong Kong women is increasing. Demographic and epidemiologic changes may continue to increase ovarian cancer incidence and new cases in Hong Kong.

Frequency of delirium and its associated factors among COVID-19 inpatients in Iran

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Delirium has been presented as the leading cause of sudden change in the mental state of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Given that the delayed diagnosis of such a dysfunction is often associated with excess mortality, it seems essential to devote vastly more attention to this significant clinical characteristic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was performed on 309 patients [viz. 259 cases hospitalized in general wards and 50 individuals admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU)]. For this purpose, a Demographic-Clinical Information Questionnaire, the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU), the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) and face-to-face interviews were completed by a trained senior psychiatry resident. The data analysis was further done with the SPSS Statistics V22.0 software package.

RESULTS

Out of 259 patients admitted to the general wards and 50 cases in the ICU due to COVID-19, 41 (15.8%) and 11 (22%) individuals were diagnosed with delirium, respectively. As well, a significant relationship was observed between the incidence rate of delirium and age (p < 0.001), level of education (p < 0.001), hypertension (HTN) (p = 0.029), a history of stroke (p = 0.025), a history of ischemic heart disease (IHD) (p = 0.007), a history of psychiatric disorders, a history of cognitive impairment (p < 0.001), use of hypnotic and antipsychotic medications (p < 0.001) and a history of substance abuse (p = 0.023). Among 52 patients with delirium, only 20 cases had received psychiatric consultation by consultation-liaison psychiatry service for the possibility of delirium.

CONCLUSION

In view of the high frequency of delirium among COVID-19 inpatients, their screening for this important mental state should be a priority in clinical settings.

Determinants of Public Health Personnel Spending in Spain

Public health is funded with government funds gathered from tax revenues, whether national, provincial or municipal. The health system therefore suffers during economic crisis periods, whether due to disinvestment, loss of purchasing power among health care personnel or the decrease in the number of professionals. This worsens the situation, as it is necessary to cover the needs of an increasingly elderly population and with a longer life expectancy at birth. The present study intends to show a model which explains the determination of the "Public Health Personnel Expenditure" in Spain for a determined period. A multiple linear regression model was applied to the period including the years 1980-2021. Macroeconomic and demographic variables were analyzed to explain the dependent variable. Variation in health personnel expenditure: "We included those variables which presented a high or very high correlation above r > 0.6. The variables which explain the behavior of Variation in health personnel expenditure". It was a determining factor in the present study to consider that the variables with the greatest repercussions on health policy were mainly macroeconomic variables rather than demographic variables, with the only significant demographic variable that had a specific weight lower than macroeconomic variables being "Birth Rate". In this sense, the contribution made to the scientific literature is to establish an explanatory model so that public policy managers and states in particular can consider it in their public spending policies, bearing in mind that health expenditures in a Beveridge-style health system, as Spain has, are paid with funds drawn from tax revenues.

Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors Associated to Fruits and Vegetables Consumption in Elderly Europeans: A Systematic Review

Several epidemiological studies stress the association between a diet based on high fruits and vegetables intake and a better health condition. However, elderly Europeans cannot manage the recommended fruits and vegetables consumption. This systematic review aims to explore the main factors related to fruits and vegetables consumption in elderly Europeans. We conducted literature searches on Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to May 2022. Published articles including data related to certain fruits and vegetables consumption among elderly Europeans were selected. The New Castle-Ottawa Scale and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute tools were used for methodological quality assessment by two authors independently. A total of 60 articles were retrieved, and data from twenty-one high-quality cross-sectional studies and five moderate-to-high-quality cohort studies, including a total of 109,516 participants, were synthesized. Associated factors mostly analyzed were those relating to demographic and socioeconomic status, such as sex, age, marital status, educational level, and income. However, the findings show a high discrepancy. Some evidence suggests a possible positive association, while other evidence shows an inverse or no association at all. The relationship between demographic and socioeconomic factors with fruits and vegetables consumption is not at all clear. More epidemiological studies with an appropriate design and corresponding statistical methods are required.

Factors influencing Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare

A comprehensive understanding of current Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare and the relevant influencing factors is essential for improving farm animal welfare and promoting further development of animal husbandry. The attitudes of 3,726 respondents in China were investigated using paper and online questionnaires. Three components (affective, cognitive, and behavioral) of attitudes toward farm animal welfare were assessed using 18 items designed based on the literature review. Influential factors of attitudes toward farm animal welfare were explored via tobit regression. The results revealed that the Chinese public not only considers farm animals to be emotional and sentient but are also sympathetic toward farm animals that suffer inhumane treatment. Although they have limited knowledge about farm animal welfare, the public believes improving farm animal welfare is beneficial, especially for food safety and human health. The Chinese public prefers regulation policies to incentive policies for improving farm animal welfare. The main factors influencing attitudes toward farm animal welfare included gender, age, education, monthly household income, area of residence, farm animal raising experience, and attention to farm animal welfare events. The effect of these influencing factors on attitudes varied. These findings provide a basis for improving Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare. The implications of formulating and implementing effective policies to improve the Chinese public attitudes toward farm animal welfare were discussed.

The Link between the Demographic and Clinical Factors and Fatigue Symptoms among Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disease of connective tissue with periods of exacerbation and remission. Fatigue is excessive strain throughout the body that is disproportionate or unrelated to an activity or lifestyle. Fatigue is an integral part of RA in most patients. The study aimed to assess the level of fatigue in RA patients and establish the relationship between fatigue and demographic and clinical factors. The study group consisted of 128 RA patients according to European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) criteria. The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue and -Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) vitality scores were used to assess the severity of fatigue symptoms. The analyzed variables were gender, age, disease duration, education, marital status, place of residence, work and residence status, pharmacological treatment, pain, morning stiffness, hemoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF), compression soreness, Richie Articular Index, and DAS28 disease activity. The examined patients experience chronic fatigue-the mean value on the FACIT-F scale was 24.1 ± 9.1 points and on the SF-36 Vitality score was 14.2 ± 1.8 points. There is a relationship between the level of fatigue and pain, long-lasting morning stiffness, active disease, increased soreness of joints, and low hemoglobin values. When analyzing the symptom of fatigue, each patient should be approached individually, using the existing questionnaires or asking key questions to recognize the situation. The presence of fatigue symptoms should be considered during therapy and patient care by searching for and eliminating additional, intensifying stimuli and increasing its level.

Assessment of Predictors for SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies Decline Rate in Health Care Workers after BNT162b2 Vaccination-Results from a Serological Survey

Background: SARS-CoV-2 is a novel human pathogen causing Coronavirus Disease 2019 that has caused widespread global mortality and morbidity. Since health workers in Israel were among the first to be vaccinated, we had a unique opportunity to investigate the post-vaccination level of IgG anti-S levels antibodies (Abs) and their dynamics by demographic and professional factors. Methods: Prospective Serological Survey during December 2020−August 2021 at Barzilai Medical Center among 458 health care workers (HCW) followed for 6 months after the second BNT162b2 vaccine dose. Results: Antibody levels before the second dose, and 30, 90 and 180 days after were 57.1 ± 29.2, 223 ± 70.2, 172.8 ± 73.3 and 166.4 ± 100.7 AU/mL, respectively. From GEE analysis, females had higher Abs levels (β = 26.37 AU/mL, p = 0.002). Age was negatively associated with Abs, with a 1.17 AU/mL decrease for each additional year (p < 0.001). Direct contact with patients was associated with lower Abs by 25.02 AU/mL (p = 0.009) compared to working with no such contact. The average decline rate overall for the study period was 3.0 ± 2.9 AU/mL per week without differences by demographic parameters and was faster during the first 3 months after vaccination than in the subsequent 3 months. Conclusions: All demographic groups experienced a decline in Abs over time, faster during the first 3 months. Findings of overall Abs lower in males, workers with direct contact with patients, and older workers, should be considered for policy-making about choosing priority populations for additional vaccine doses in hospital settings.

Influence factors associated with health risk behaviors of middle school students in the poverty area of China: An observational study

We aim to investigate the status and influence factors of health risk behaviors among middle school students and explore the relationship between social support, family care, and the health risk behaviors. The study was conducted in 3 middle schools in the Fan county located in the Puyang city. Independent measures were applied to assess adolescent health risk behaviors, perceive social support, and family care. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the main factors that affect adolescent health risk behaviors. The total scores of health risk behaviors were 53.87 ± 9.97, and all kinds of health risk behaviors were very common. The highest score was health-compromising (2.45 ± 0.43), and the lowest score was unprotected sex behaviors (1.07 ± 0.28). Multiple regression analysis showed that sex (P < .001), grade (P < .001), parent relationships (P < .001), father's occupation (P = .035), mother's education level (P = .011), social support (P < .001), affection (P < .001), and growth (P = .003) were the main factors of health risk behaviors, accounting for 25.3%. The health risk behaviors among middle school students in Fan county should attract the attention of education administration, schools, and parent due to the varied influencing factors. Related interventions should be conducted to reduce the severity and frequency of adolescent health risk behaviors and protect the health and growth of adolescents. In order to better analyze the health risk behaviors of middle school students, we will incorporate more influencing factors and carry out further causal analysis in the future.

The role of need for control and self-reliance in gender and age differences in bowel cancer screening participation

OBJECTIVE

To examine the relationships between need for control and self-reliance and barriers to bowel cancer screening to better understand the reasons for lower bowel cancer screening adherence in males and younger individuals.

METHODS

Participants (n = 506) aged between 54 and 75 years old completed an online survey measuring demographic information, the four-factor Barriers to Home Bowel Cancer Screening Scale (BB-CanS) and a measure of Need for Control and Self-Reliance (NCSR). Model fit statistics were compared for seven path models testing the relationships between NCSR and BB-CanS factors and the moderating and mediating effects of age and gender.

RESULTS

Models where age and gender were included as moderators showed the best fit. When compared to females and those under 60 years of age, stronger positive associations between NCSR and BB-CanS factors were evident among males (β_avoidance  = 0.539, p < 0.001); β_disgust  = 0.558, p < 0.001; β_difficulty  = 0.489, p < 0.001; β_autonomy  = 0.619, p = 0.002) and those over 60 years of age (β_avoidance  = 0.400, p < 0.001); β_disgust  = 0.462, p < 0.001; β_difficulty  = 0.447, p < 0.001; β_autonomy  = 0.378, p < 0.001.

CONCLUSIONS

When encouraging males and people aged 60 years and over to participate in bowel cancer screening, public health messages may benefit from conveying preventative health behaviour and cancer screening participation as actions that reflect self-control and self-reliance.

Epidemiological changes, demographic drivers, and global years of life lost from suicide over the period 1990-2019

OBJECTIVE

To quantify the contributions of epidemiological changes (age- and gender-specific suicide rates) and demographic forces (population growth and aging) to global changes in years of life lost (YLLs) from suicide over the last 30 years.

METHOD

A decomposition analysis was used to assess the impacts of population growth, population aging, and suicide prevalence on global changes in YLLs from suicide between 1990 and 2019.

RESULTS

From 1990 to 2019, global YLLs from suicide reduced by 2,073,714 years (5.9%), from 35,246,316 years to 33,172,602 years. This was mainly due to the decline in age-specific suicide rates, which reduced the overall YLLs from suicide by 20,185,691 years (973.4%). However, this decline was offset by the impacts of population growth and population aging, which increased global YLLs from suicide by 14,949,110 years (-720.9%) and 3,442,074 years (-166.0%), respectively. The combined effects of epidemiological and demographic drivers were also reflected in different trends in YLLs from suicide across genders and World Bank income level regions, with particularly notable increases in low- income and lower-middle income countries and the aging population.

CONCLUSIONS

With the significant effects of epidemiological and demographic drivers, global and regional YLLs from suicide may be expected to change greatly in the future. Efforts to reduce the burden of suicide require appropriate allocation of resources for suicide-prevention strategies and further consideration of demographic factors.

A Virtual Hybrid Care Hotel Model Supports the Recovery of Post-procedural Patients with Mild to Severe Systemic Diseases

BACKGROUND

Patients with mild to severe chronic systemic disease undergoing low-risk procedures are often hospitalized for observation. The Care Hotel is a novel virtual medicine hybrid model of care that offers patients a comfortable, out of hospital environment where they can receive both in-person and virtual care after a surgery or procedure. This study aimed to analyze if virtual hybrid post-procedure care in a hotel could be both conducted on and accepted by patients, even those with moderate to severe chronic diseases.

METHODS

This retrospective cohort study was conducted between July 23, 2020 and June 4, 2021 at Mayo Clinic in Florida, a 306-bed community academic hospital. We collected the sex, age, race, ethnicity, acceptance rate, ASA score, and primary procedure of patients using the Care Hotel.

RESULTS

Out of 392 patients, 272 (69.4%) opted for care in the program. Median patient age was 61.5 years, 59.56% were males, and 86.40% were white. We found that 50.37% had an ASA score of 2 and 43.4% had an ASA score of 3. Ten different surgical specialties were able to utilize the Care Hotel for care in 47 different procedure types. Urology had the most patients (n=70, 25.7%). Post-electrophysiologic procedures were the most common procedures (n=39, 14.3%).

CONCLUSION

Our virtual hybrid Care Hotel program was widely accepted by patients and could care for a multitude of post-operative procedures. Additionally, this novel program can care for patients with both mild and severe systemic diseases.

Individual Preventive Behaviors of COVID-19 and Associated Psychological Factors Among Chinese Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Online Survey

Purpose

Older adults aged 60 years and above are classified as being of high-risk for infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the associations of psychological factors (motivational factors: risk perception, health knowledge, attitude, subjective norm, motivational self-efficacy, and intention; volitional factors: volitional self-efficacy, planning, and action control) of preventive behaviors with three preventive behaviors (hand washing, facemask wearing, and social distancing) among Chinese older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was administered via SOJUMP, a widely used online survey platform in China. A total of 928 older adults (mean = 67.24 years, age range: 60–90 years, SD = 6.43, 55.9% females) were recruited using a snowball sampling approach from Hubei Province (n = 667) and outside Hubei Province (n = 261) in China during May 18, 2020 to June 7, 2020. Multiple hierarchical regressions were conducted with four models to examine the association between demographic, past behavior, psychological factors and each preventive behavior.

Principal Findings

All three preventive behaviors in older adults increased dramatically during the pandemic of COVID-19. Gender, living status, educational level, past behavior, health knowledge, intention and planning significantly predicted hand washing behavior, R² = 0.395, F(10, 927) = 54.372, p < 0.001. Gender, education level, important others (e.g., family members or friends) infection, past behavior, health knowledge, planning and action control significantly predicted mask wearing behavior, R² = 0.202, F(10, 927) = 23.197, p < 0.001. Living place, past behavior and health knowledge significantly predicted social distancing behavior, R² = 0.204, F(9, 927) = 26.201, p < 0.001.

Major Conclusions

Past behavior and health knowledge predicted all three preventive behaviors. Planning was an important psychological factor for both hand washing and mask wearing behaviors. All those critical demographic and psychological factors are critical for future interventions to facilitate older adults to comply with three preventive behaviors in daily life and to stay healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Factors associated with the recurrence of lumbar disk herniation: biomechanical-radiological and demographic factors

Many risk factors associated with recurrent lumbar disk herniation (RLDH) following lumbar discectomy (LD) have been reported. This study aimed to elucidate the biomechanical-radiological, clinical, and demographic factors that affect symptomatic RLDH prospectively.We collected prospective data of 988 consecutive patients with LDH who underwent LD at our department from January 2014 to December 2015. Patients who met the study criteria and were followed up postoperatively for more than 5 years were included (n = 816). Patients were divided into 3 groups; group 1 included patients who experienced symptomatic RLDH within the first postoperative 24 months (PO24M), group 2 included patients with symptomatic RLDH after PO24M, and group 3 included the patients who hadn't experienced symptomatic RLDH/LDH. The preoperative biomechanical-radiological, clinical, and the patients' demographic characteristics were compared among the groups.A total of 816 patients with 842 LDH met our study criteria. The mean age at the first LD was 46.9 years. The mean follow-up period was 72.8 months. The preoperative trauma history, postoperative trauma history, and BMI > 24.5 kg/m² were independent risk factors for RLDH. Large sROM at the L4-5 level and a higher intervertebral disk height index (IDH) were significantly higher in groups 1 and 2.Biomechanical-radiological and demographic factors can affect the incidence of symptomatic RLDH. To reduce the risk of RLDH, patients with these risk factors should receive more attention during surgical interventions. The patients should avoid gaining weight and potential traumatic accidents.

Epidemiological Characteristics of Hospitalized Patients with Moderate versus Severe COVID-19 Infection: A Retrospective Cohort Single Centre Study

COVID-19 has a devastating impact worldwide. Recognizing factors that cause its progression is important for the utilization of appropriate resources and improving clinical outcomes. In this study, we aimed to identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients who were hospitalized with moderate versus severe COVID-19 illness. A single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted between 3 March and 9 September 2020. Following the CDC guidelines, a two-category variable for COVID-19 severity (moderate versus severe) based on length of stay, need for intensive care or mechanical ventilation and mortality was developed. Data including demographic, clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, therapeutic interventions and clinical outcomes were assessed using descriptive and inferential analysis. A total of 1002 patients were included, the majority were male (n = 646, 64.5%), Omani citizen (n = 770, 76.8%) and with an average age of 54.2 years. At the bivariate level, patients classified as severe were older (Mean = 55.2, SD = 16) than the moderate patients (Mean = 51.5, SD = 15.8). Diabetes mellitus was the only significant comorbidity potential factor that was more prevalent in severe patients than moderate (n = 321, 46.6%; versus n = 178, 42.4%; p < 0.001). Under the laboratory factors; total white cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer and corrected calcium were significant. All selected clinical characteristics and therapeutics were significant. At the multivariate level, under demographic factors, only nationality was significant and no significant comorbidity was identified. Three clinical factors were identified, including; sepsis, Acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS) and requirement of non-invasive ventilation (NIV). CRP and steroids were also identified under laboratory and therapeutic factors, respectively. Overall, our study identified only five factors from a total of eighteen proposed due to their significant values (p < 0.05) from the bivariate analysis. There are noticeable differences in levels of COVID-19 severity among nationalities. All the selected clinical and therapeutic factors were significant, implying that they should be a key priority when assessing severity in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. An elevated level of CRP may be a valuable early marker in predicting the progression in non-severe patients with COVID-19. Early recognition and intervention of these factors could ease the management of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and reduce case fatalities as well medical expenditure.

Demographics Associated With Stress, Severe Mental Distress, and Anxiety Symptoms During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan: Nationwide Cross-sectional Web-Based Survey

Background

With the spread of COVID-19, the deterioration of public mental health has become a major global and social problem.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the 3 mental health problems associated with COVID-19, that is, perceived stress, severe mental distress, and anxiety symptoms, and the various demographic factors, including occupation.

Methods

A nationwide web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in Japan from August 4 to 31, 2020. In addition to sociodemographic data, the degrees of perceived stress, severe mental distress, and anxiety symptoms associated with COVID-19 were measured. After performing a descriptive statistical analysis, factors related to stress, severe mental distress, and anxiety symptoms were analyzed using logistic regression analysis.

Results

A total of 8203 respondents submitted survey responses, among whom 34.9% (2861/8203) felt intense stress associated with COVID-19, 17.1% (1403/8203) were depressed, and 13.5% (1110/8203) had severe anxiety symptoms. The logistic regression analysis showed that each of the 3 mental health problems were prevalent in females, nonbinary gender, people in their 50s, 60s and older, respondents who visited psychiatrists, and those currently in psychiatric care. Severe mental distress and anxiety symptoms were associated with the number of effective lifestyle coping strategies during the lockdown period. Severe mental distress was only prevalent in teenagers and respondents in their 20s, as students tended to develop stress and severe mental distress. With regard to occupation, working in nursing care and welfare, education and research, and medical and health sectors was associated with stress; however, working in these occupations was not associated with severe mental distress and anxiety symptoms. Unemployment was associated with severe mental distress and anxiety symptoms. All 3 mental health problems were prevalent in part-time workers and those working in entertainment and arts sectors.

Conclusions

Gender, age, occupation, history of psychiatric visits, and stress coping mechanisms were associated with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, but their associations with stress, severe mental distress, and anxiety symptoms differed. In addition, the actual state of mental health varied according to the respondents’ occupation. It is necessary to consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health not only at the individual level but also at the occupational level.

Demographic and Psychographic Factors of Social Isolation During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Importance of Technology Confidence

The COVID-19 pandemic presents an unprecedented situation in which physical distancing and “stay at home” orders have increased the pressures for social isolation. Critically, certain demographic factors have been linked to increased feelings of isolation and loneliness. These at-risk groups for social isolation may be disproportionately affected by the changes and restrictions that have been implemented to prevent viral spread. In our analysis, we sought to evaluate if perceived feelings of social isolation, during the COVID-19 pandemic, was related to demographic and technology-related psychographic characteristics. Older adults across Canada were surveyed about their demographic background, their feelings concerning confidence and proficiency in technology use, and how frequently they have felt isolated during the pandemic. In total 927 responses from Canadians over 65 years old, of varying demographic characteristics were collected. Our data shows that many older adults are feeling isolated “Often” or “Some of the time” in 2020, regardless of most demographic factors that have been previously associated with increased isolation risk. However, feelings of proficiency in using technology was an important factor affecting feelings of isolation. Given that technology proficiency is a modifiable factor, and remained significant after adjustment for demographic factors, future efforts to reduce social isolation should consider training programs for older adults to improve technology confidence, especially in an increasingly digital world.

Connectedness to Nature Does Not Explain the Variation in Physical Activity and Body Composition in Adults and Older People

Connectedness to nature (CN) is a significant predictor of pro-environmental behaviours, human health and well-being. However, research on how this connection to the natural world might promote a more active lifestyle and improve body mass composition according to gender is lacking. This study investigated the influence of CN on physical activity (PA) and body composition in adults and older people. We recruited a sample of 219 individuals (77 men and 142 women), and a self-administered questionnaire was used to measure CN and obtain demographic data. Body composition was assessed by bioimpedance, and PA was assessed by accelerometry. Correlations and stepwise multiple regressions were used in data analysis. CN's association with other variables was more pronounced in women than in men, and we only identified significant associations with steps/day and body composition. However, this variable would not be included in the regression models that we developed. Adiposity levels and muscle status were significant predictors of PA in women. In both genders, age, percentage of fat mass and fat-free mass were selected as regressors in the models developed for visceral fat area and muscle condition (R2 Adjusted ≥ 0.908).

Breastfeeding Self-efficacy and Related Socio-demographic, Perinatal and Psychological Factors: a Cross-sectional Study Among Postpartum Greek Women

Background:

Studies have shown that breastfeeding self-efficacy constitutes a determinant used to forecast breastfeeding behaviours.

Objective:

The aim of this study was to examine the factors associated to breastfeeding self-efficacy and identify its predictors among Greek women in their immediate postpartum period.

Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted at the General Hospital of Volos, Greece. A convenience sample of 120 postpartum women who gave birth at the hospital and met all the inclusion criteria were invited to participate; 100 responded. Questionnaires on socio-demographic, perinatal and breastfeeding-related characteristics, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the Breastfeeding Self-Efficiency Scale were completed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed with the use of the linear regression model.

Results:

Women reported a rather good level of breastfeeding self-efficacy (mean = 3.65; SD = 0.85) in the early postpartum period. 52% of women carried out exclusive breastfeeding in the hospital. The prevalence of postnatal depression was 25%. The best-fit regression analysis revealed four predictors (timing of the mother’s decision to breastfeed, infant’s feeding pattern, previous breastfeeding experience, levels of postnatal depression) explaining 44.7% of the variance in breastfeeding self-efficacy.

Conclusion:

Acknowledging the determinants which affect breastfeeding self-efficacy of women in the immediate postpartum period is a necessary condition in designing targeted intervention services.

Explaining regional differences in mortality during the first wave of Covid-19 in Italy

Italy was hit harshly by the Covid-19 pandemic, registering more than 35,000 Covid-19 deaths between February and July 2020. During this first wave of the epidemic, the virus spread unequally across the country, with northern regions witnessing more cases and deaths. We investigate demographic and socio-economic factors contributing to the diverse regional impact of the virus during the first wave. Using generalized additive mixed models, we find that Covid-19 mortality at regional level is negatively associated with the degree of intergenerational co-residence, number of intensive care unit beds per capita, and delay in the outbreak of the epidemic. Conversely, we do not find strong associations for several variables highlighted in recent literature, such as population density or the share of the population who are older or have at least one chronic disease. Our results underscore the importance of context-specific analysis for the study of a pandemic.

COVID-19 and Historic Influenza Vaccinations in the United States: A Comparative Analysis

The COVID-19 vaccination effort is a monumental global challenge. Recognizing and addressing the causes of vaccine hesitancy will improve vaccine uptake. The primary objective of this study was to compare the COVID-19 vaccination rates in US counties to historical vaccination rates for influenza in persons aged 65 and older. The secondary objective was to identify county-level demographic, socioeconomic, and political factors that influence vaccination rates. County level data were obtained from publicly available databases for comparison and to create predictive models. Overall, in US counties the COVID-19 vaccination rate exceeded influenza vaccination rates amongst those aged 65 or older (69.4.0% vs. 44%, p < 0.0001). 2690 (83.4%) of 3224 counties had vaccinated 50% or more of their 65 and older residents in the first seven months of the COVID-19 vaccination roll out. There were 467 (14.5%) of 3223 counties in which the influenza vaccination rate exceeded the COVID-19 vaccination rate. Most of these counties were in the Southern region, were considered politically "red" and had a significantly higher non-Hispanic Black resident population (14.4% vs. 8.2%, p < 0.0001). Interventions intended to improve uptake should account for nuances in vaccine access, confidence, and consider factual social media messaging, especially in vulnerable counties.

Patient Characteristics and Emergency Treatment Orders in Three Florida Inpatient Psychiatric Units

Background

Florida law defines emergency treatment orders (ETOs) as an immediate administration of psychotropic medications to a person to expeditiously treat symptoms that may present an immediate danger to the safety of the person or others.1 There is currently little information on who receives ETOs. In this study, we aim to explore correlations between patients' demographics and administering ETOs in order to understand this cohort, which could allow for improved services and alternative interventions.

Methods

This retrospective study examined data from 1,460 adult patients who were admitted to an acute inpatient psychiatric unit from January 2015 to December 2017 and who received at least one ETO during their hospital admission.

Results

Results revealed that younger patients (18-25 years) were at increased risk of receiving more than one ETO (p=0.039) than patients who were 26 and older. Patients with an elevated body mass index (BMI) (25 kg/m2 or more) also had a significantly increased likelihood of being administered more ETOs (≥4 ETOs) than patients with a lower BMI (defined as less than 25 kg/m2 [p=0.037]). Moreover, patients with a length of stay (LOS) of more than 14 days were more likely to receive more ETOs compared to patients with LOS less than or equal to 14 days (p<0.001). Lastly, patients with a neurocognitive disorder and/or within the schizophrenia spectrum or other psychotic disorders were more likely to receive ETOs (p<0.001) than patients with other diagnoses.

Conclusion

There are some correlations in administering ETOs in that younger patients with an elevated BMI, longer LOS and certain diagnoses receive more ETOs. The reason for these findings is not clear. Therefore, prospective studies should be conducted in order to analyze these correlations.

Confounders in Identification and Analysis of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Cardiovascular Diseases

Proinflammatory biomarkers have been increasingly used in epidemiologic and intervention studies over the past decades to evaluate and identify an association of systemic inflammation with cardiovascular diseases. Although there is a strong correlation between the elevated level of inflammatory biomarkers and the pathology of various cardiovascular diseases, the mechanisms of the underlying cause are unclear. Identification of pro-inflammatory biomarkers such as cytokines, chemokines, acute phase proteins, and other soluble immune factors can help in the early diagnosis of disease. The presence of certain confounding factors such as variations in age, sex, socio-economic status, body mass index, medication and other substance use, and medical illness, as well as inconsistencies in methodological practices such as sample collection, assaying, and data cleaning and transformation, may contribute to variations in results. The purpose of the review is to identify and summarize the effect of demographic factors, epidemiological factors, medication use, and analytical and pre-analytical factors with a panel of inflammatory biomarkers CRP, IL-1b, IL-6, TNFa, and the soluble TNF receptors on the concentration of these inflammatory biomarkers in serum.
