Abstract
Sustainability and environmental concerns have persuaded researchers to explore renewable materials, such as nature-derived polysaccharides, and add value by changing chemical structures with the aim to possess specific properties, like biological properties. Meanwhile, finding methods and strategies that can lower hazardous chemicals, simplify production steps, reduce time consumption, and acquire high-purified products is an important task that requires attention. To break through these issues, electrical discharging in aqueous solutions at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, referred to as the "solution plasma process", has been introduced as a novel process for modification of nature-derived polysaccharides like chitin and chitosan. This review reveals insight into the electrical discharge in aqueous solutions and scientific progress on their application in a modification of chitin and chitosan, including degradation and deacetylation. The influencing parameters in the plasma process are intensively explained in order to provide a guideline for the modification of not only chitin and chitosan but also other nature-derived polysaccharides, aiming to address economic aspects and environmental concerns.

Abstract
Three alginates with fundamentally different block structures, poly-M, poly-G, and poly-MG, have been investigated upon ionic crosslinking with chitosan oligosaccharides (CHOS), using circular dichroism (CD), rheology, and computer simulations, supporting the previously proposed gelling principle of poly-M forming zipper-like junction zones with chitosan (match in charge distance along the two polyelectrolytes) and revealing a unique high gel strength poly-MG chitosan gelling system. CD spectroscopy revealed an increased chiroptical activity exclusively for the poly-M chitosan gelling system, indicative of induced conformational changes and higher ordered structures. Rheological measurement revealed gel strengths (G' < 900 Pa) for poly-MG (1%) CHOS (0.3%) hydrogels, magnitudes of order greater than displayed by its poly-M analogue. Furthermore, the ionically crosslinked poly-MG chitosan hydrogel increased in gel strength upon the addition of salt (G' < 1600 at 50 mM NaCl), suggesting a stabilization of the junction zones through hydrophobic interactions and/or a phase separation. Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to further investigate these findings, comparing interaction energies, charge distances and chain alignments. These alginates are displaying high gel strengths, are known to be fully biocompatible and have revealed a broad range of tolerance to salt concentrations present in biological systems, proving high relevance for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are homo- or hetero-oligomers of D-glucosamine (GlcN) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) that can be obtained by chitosan or chitin hydrolysis. Their enzymatic production is preferred over other methodologies (physical, chemical, etc.) due to the mild conditions required, the fewer amounts of waste and its efficiency to control product composition. By properly selecting the enzyme (chitinase, chitosanase or nonspecific enzymes) and the substrate properties (degree of deacetylation, molecular weight, etc.), it is possible to direct the synthesis towards any of the three COS types: fully acetylated (faCOS), partially acetylated (paCOS) and fully deacetylated (fdCOS). In this article, we review the main strategies to steer the COS production towards a specific group. The chemical characterization of COS by advanced techniques, e.g., high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, is critical for structure–function studies. The scaling of processes to synthesize specific COS mixtures is difficult due to the low solubility of chitin/chitosan, the heterogeneity of the reaction mixtures, and high amounts of salts. Enzyme immobilization can help to minimize such hurdles. The main bioactive properties of COS are herein reviewed. Finally, the anti-inflammatory activity of three COS mixtures was assayed in murine macrophages after stimulation with lipopolysaccharides.

Abstract
With an increase in life expectancy and decrease of quality-of-life couple with the high prevalence of diseases, diet is expected to play a key function in sustaining human health. Nutritionists, food technologists and medical experts are working in synergy to cater for the increasing demand of food with associated therapeutic benefits, commonly known as functional food, that may improve well-being and reduce the risk of diseases. Interestingly, the marine ecosystem, due to its abundant and phenomenal biodiversity of marine organisms, constitutes a vital source of a panoply of healthy foods supply for the thriving functional food industry. Marine organisms such as seaweeds, sea cucumbers, sponges, and mollusks amongst others are sources of thousands of biologically active metabolites with antioxidant, anti-parasitic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Given the growing number of research and interest to probe into the therapeutic roles of marine products, this review was designed to provide a comprehensive summary of the therapeutic properties of marine organisms (macroalgae, sea cucumbers and fish among others) which are consumed worldwide, in addition to their potentials and as sources of functional ingredients for developing novel food and fostering wellness. The gap between research development and actual commercialization, and future prospects of marine-based products also summarized to some extent.

Abstract
Chitosans with different average degrees of acetylation and weight molecular weight were analyzed by time-domain NMR relaxometry using the recently proposed pulse sequence named Rhim and Kessemeier - Radiofrequency Optimized Solid-Echo (RK-ROSE) to acquire 1H NMR signal of solid-state materials. The NMR signal decay was composed of faster (tenths of μs) and longer components, where the mobile-part fraction exhibited an effective relaxation transverse time assigned to methyl hydrogens from N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GlcNAc) units. The higher intrinsic mobility of methyl groups was confirmed via DIPSHIFT experiments by probing the 1H-13C dipolar interaction. RK-ROSE data were modeled by using Partial Least Square (PLS) multivariate regression, which showed a high coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.93) between RK-ROSE signal profile and average degrees of acetylation and crystallinity index, thus indicating that time-domain NMR consists in a promising tool for structural and morphological characterization of chitosan.

Abstract
Owing to their excellent bioavailability, high bioactivity, and low toxicity, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are emerging nanomaterials. In this study, SeNPs with a size of ∼41.8 nm were synthesised by γ-irradiation using oligochitosan (OCS) as the stabiliser. As-synthesized SeNPs/OCS were characterised by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Results revealed that the as-obtained SeNP/OCS powder exhibits high purity. The SeNP/OCS solution’s stability test results indicated that the SeNP/OCS solution stored at 4°C exhibits good stability for 60 days. The SeNP/OCS solution was unstable at ambient temperature, and SeNP/OCS exhibited agglomeration after about 15 days. SeNP/OCS products recovered the total white blood cells of γ-ray irradiated mice. The SeNP/OCS product, which was synthesised by a green approach, with high purity and efficient recuperation of white blood cells, can be used potentially as a functional supplement to assist cancer radiotherapy patients.

Abstract
Short chain chitooligosaccharides (COs) are chitin derivative molecules involved in plant-fungus signaling during arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) interactions. In host plants, COs activate a symbiotic signalling pathway that regulates AM-related gene expression. Furthermore, exogenous CO application was shown to promote AM establishment, with a major interest for agricultural applications of AM fungi as biofertilizers. Currently, the main source of commercial COs is from the shrimp processing industry, but purification costs and environmental concerns limit the convenience of this approach. In an attempt to find a low cost and low impact alternative, this work aimed to isolate, characterize and test the bioactivity of COs from selected strains of phylogenetically distant filamentous fungi: Pleurotus ostreatus, Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Trichoderma viride. Our optimized protocol successfully isolated short chain COs from lyophilized fungal biomass. Fungal COs were more acetylated and displayed a higher biological activity compared to shrimp-derived COs, a feature that-alongside low production costs-opens promising perspectives for the large scale use of COs in agriculture.

Abstract
Biocompatible nanocomposites (NCs) with antibacterial activity containing organic matrix and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are vital for providing a suitable substrate for hydroxyapatite (HA) formation. Therefore, we fabricated a series of biocompatible NCs of chitosan (CS) and tragacanth gum (TG) and different percentages of ZnO NPs and ZnO@Ag NPs as fillers into the CS-TG blend. The characteristics of the NCs were distinguished with the field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-Ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% showed a rough surface according to FE-SEM. Moreover, the TEM image of CS-TG/ZnO NC 8 wt% depicted a uniform dispersion of NPs into the matrix. The biocompatibility of these NCs was evaluated by the formation of HA on their surfaces. The outcomes depicted the deposition of HA on the surface of all NCs. Also, CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% exhibited the most HA deposition on its surface. The antibacterial activity of these NCs toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria was evaluated. The CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% exhibited a higher inhibition zone diameter in comparison to the ZnO@Ag (1:0.500) NPs for the S. aureus bacteria. Generally, antibacterial activity of the NCs containing ZnO@Ag NPs are more than NCs containing ZnO NPs.

Abstract
Prunus armeniaca gum exudate (PAGE) is obtained from the trunk branches of apricot trees. PAGE is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide with arabinogalactan structure. The physicochemical and rheological characteristics of this gum have been investigated in various researches. PAGE offers a good potential for use as an emulsifying, binding, and stabilizing agent in food and pharmaceutical industries. It also can be used as an organic additive in tissue culture media, synthesizing of metallic nanoparticles, binding potential in tablets, antioxidant agent, and corrosion inhibitor. For desirable emulsifying, stabilizing, shelf life-enhancing properties, and antioxidant activity of PAGE, it can be used as additive in many foods. We present here a comprehensive review on the existing literatures on characterization of this source of polysaccharide to explore its potential applications in various systems.

Abstract
In situ H2O2 generation systems are efficient for H2O2-dependent biocatalytic oxidation reactions. Here, we report that lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), copper-dependent polysaccharide monooxygenases, can efficiently supply H2O2 in situ to dye-decolorizing peroxidases (DyPs) using substrate gallic acid (GA) for chitosan functionalization. The maximum grafting ratio induced by the cascade reaction was significantly higher than that achieved by a reaction with initial exogenous H2O2. The maximum grafting ratio was obtained with 12 g/L GA, 5.6 mg/L DyP, 20-30 mg/L LPMO, and pH 4.5-5.0. UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy confirmed GA grafting onto chitosan. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that GA-chitosan conjugates had lower thermal stability and crystallinity than chitosan. The GA-chitosan conjugates had significantly higher antioxidant activity than chitosan. This study supplies a green and high-efficiency approach to achieve an enzymatic cascade reaction for chitosan functionalization and has potential applications in H2O2-dependent biocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Effects and Mechanisms of Chitosan and ChitosanOligosaccharide on Hepatic Lipogenesis and Lipid Peroxidation, Adipose Lipolysis, and Intestinal Lipid Absorption in Rats with High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity. Abstract
Chitosan and its derivative, chitosan oligosaccharide (CO), possess hypolipidemic and anti-obesity effects. However, it is still unclear if the mechanisms are different or similar between chitosan and CO. This study was designed to investigate and compare the effects of CO and high-molecular-weight chitosan (HC) on liver lipogenesis and lipid peroxidation, adipose lipolysis, and intestinal lipid absorption in high-fat (HF) diet-fed rats for 12 weeks. Rats were divided into four groups: normal control diet (NC), HF diet, HF diet+5% HC, and HF diet+5% CO. Both HC and CO supplementation could reduce liver lipid biosynthesis, but HC had a better effect than CO on improving liver lipid accumulation in HF diet-fed rats. The increased levels of triglyceride decreased lipolysis rate, and increased lipoprotein lipase activity in the perirenal adipose tissue of HF diet-fed rats could be significantly reversed by both HC and CO supplementation. HC, but not CO, supplementation promoted liver antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and reduced liver lipid peroxidation. In the intestines, CO, but not HC, supplementation reduced lipid absorption by reducing the expression of fabp2 and fatp4 mRNA. These results suggest that HC and CO have different mechanisms for improving lipid metabolism in HF diet-fed rats.

Abstract
The quality of water is continuously under threat as increasing concentrations of pollutants escape into the aquatic environment. However, these issues can be alleviated by adsorbing pollutants onto adsorbents. Chitosan and its composites are attracting considerable interest as environmentally acceptable adsorbents and have the potential to remove many of these contaminants. In this review the development of chitosan-based adsorbents is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the extraction of chitin from seafood wastes, followed by its conversion to chitosan, the properties of chitosan are described. Then, the emerging chitosan/carbon-based materials, including magnetic chitosan and chitosan combined with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, biochar, and activated carbon and also chitosan-silica composites are introduced. The applications of these materials in the removal of various heavy metal ions, including Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and different cationic and anionic dyes, phenol and other organic molecules, such as antibiotics, are reviewed, compared and discussed. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics are then highlighted and followed by details on the mechanisms of adsorption and the role of the chitosan and the carbon or silica supports. Based on the reviewed papers, it is clear, that while some challenges remain, chitosan-based materials are emerging as promising adsorbents.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) is a well-known stabilizer for metal nanoparticles in biomedical engineering. However, very few studies have explored other important roles of CS including reducing, shape-directing, and size-controlling. This review aims to provide the latest and most comprehensive overview of the roles of CS in the green synthesis of metal nanoparticles for biomedical applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that highlights these potentialities of CS. At first, a brief overview of the properties and the bioactivity of CS is presented. Next, the benefits of CS for enhancing the physicochemical behaviors of metal nanoparticles are discussed in detail. The representative biomedical applications of CS-metal nanoparticles are also given. Lastly, the review outlines the perceptual vision for the future development of CS-metal nanoparticles in the biomedicine field.

Abstract
A 6-week feeding trial was performed to examine the effects of supplementing Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae meal when fishmeal (FM) was replaced with poultry by-product meal (PBM) in juvenile barramundi, Lates calcarifer diet. The effect was evaluated in terms of barramundi growth, filet quality, internal tissue structure, serum biochemistry, skin neutral mucins, immune response, and resistance to Vibrio harveyi. Three isonitrogenous (48% crude protein) and isolipidic (18% crude lipid) diets: an FM-based diet (control) and two diets containing 60 and 75% of PBM supplemented with 10% HI larvae (60PBM + HI and 75PBM + HI) were formulated. A total of 225 barramundi, with an average weight of 15.87 ± 0.14 g, were randomly distributed into nine tanks, each holding 25 fish. There were no significant effects of test diets on growth, but feeding HI-supplemented PBM diets significantly increased the survival rate. A significantly reduced intraperitoneal fat index in HI-supplemented-PBM-fed fish was correlated to a decreased size of peritoneal adipocytes. The observation of no histopathological alteration of the liver in the HI-supplemented-PBM-fed fish was further supported by significant alterations in serum biochemistry, in particular, a decreasing tendency of alanine transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and total bilirubin. A 14-day challenge with V. harveyi indicated that HI-supplemented PBM diets reduced the infection rate in barramundi. After 24 h of infection, increased serum (lysozyme) and skin barrier functions, down-regulation of interleukin-1beta, and upregulation of interleukin-10 were found in HI-supplemented-PBM-fed fish.

Abstract
Chitooligosaccharides (COS) generated from either chitin (chitin oligosaccharides) or chitosan (chitosan oligosaccharides) have a wide range of applications in agriculture, medicine, and other fields. Here, we report the characterization of a chitosanase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BamCsn) and the importance of a tryptophan (Trp), W204, for BamCsn activity. BamCsn hydrolyzed the chitosan polymer by an endo mode. It also hydrolyzed chitin oligosaccharides and interestingly exhibited transglycosylation activity on chitotetraose and chitopentaose. Mutation of W204, a nonconserved amino acid in chitosanases, to W204A abolished the hydrolytic activity of BamCsn, with a change in the structure that resulted in a decreased affinity for the substrate and impaired the catalytic ability. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that BamCsn could belong to a new class of chitosanases that showed unique properties like transglycosylation, cleavage of chitin oligosaccharides, and the presence of W204 residues, which is important for activity. Chitosanases belonging to the BamCsn class showed a high potential to generate COS from chitinous substrates.

Abstract
Chitosan hydrolysis by chitosanase is one of the most effective methods to produce chitosan oligosaccharides. One of the prerequisites of enzyme fermentation production is to select and breed enzyme-producing cells with good performance. So in the process of fermentation production, the low yield of chitosanase cannot meet the current requirement. In this paper, a strain producing chitosanase was screened and identified, and a novel mutagenesis system (Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma (ARTP)) was selected to increase the yield of chitosanase. Then, the fermentation medium was optimized to further improve the enzyme activity of the strain. A strain of Bacillus cereus capable of producing chitosanase was screened and identified from soil samples. A mutant strain of B.cereus was obtained by Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma mutagenesis and bioscreening method, and chitosanase activity was 2.49 folds that of the original bacterium. After an optimized fermentation medium, the enzyme activity of the mutant strain was 1.47 folds that of the original bacterium. Combined with all the above optimization experiments, the enzyme activity of mutant strain increased by 3.66 times. The results showed that the Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma mutagenesis and bioscreening method could significantly increase the yield of chitosanase in B.cereus, and had little effect on the properties of the enzyme. These findings have potential applications in the mutagenesis of other enzyme-producing microorganisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to monitor the physiological changes and cytotoxic effects of exogenous contrast agents during photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal therapy (PTT). In this paper, a low-power telemetric device for mouse vital signs monitoring was designed and demonstrated. APPROACH The power consumption was optimized through hardware and software co-design with a 17% increased operating time compared with typical operation. To demonstrate the feasibility of the monitoring device, PAI and PTT experiments with chitosan-polypyrrole nanocomposites (CS-PPy NCs) as exogenous contrast agents were conducted. Herein, the physiological variation in groups of mice with different CS-PPy NC concentrations was observed and analyzed. MAIN RESULTS The experimental results indicated the influence of CS-PPy NCs and anesthesia on mouse vital signs in PAI and PTT. Additionally, the association between core temperature, heart rate, and saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2) during PAI and PTT was shown. The strong near-infrared absorbance of exogenous contrast agents could account for the increase in mouse core temperature and tumor temperature in this study. Furthermore, high cross-correlation values between core temperature, heart rate, and SpO2 were demonstrated to explain the fluctuation of mouse vital signs during PAI and PTT. SIGNIFICANCE A design of a vital signs monitoring device, with low power consumption, was introduced in this study. A high cross correlation coefficient of mouse vital signs and the effects of CS-PPy NCs were observed, which explained the mouse physiological variation during the PAI and PTT experiments.

Abstract
Chitosan, a biopolymer possessing numerous interesting bioactivities and excellent technological properties, has received great attention from scientists in different fields including the food industry, pharmacy, medicine, and environmental fields. A series of recent studies have reported exciting results about improvement of the properties of chitosan using the Maillard reaction. However, there is a lack of a systemic review about the preparation, bioactivities and applications in food industry of chitosan-based Maillard reaction products (CMRPs). The presence of free amino groups in chitosan allows it to acquire some stronger or new functional properties via the Maillard reaction. The present review aims to focus on the current research status of synthesis, optimization and structural identification of CMRPs. The applications of CMRPs in the food industry are also discussed according to their biological and technological properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial activities and inducing conformational changes of allergens in food. Some promising directions for future research are proposed in this review, aiming to provide theoretical guidance for the further development of chitosan and its derivatives.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease with a prevalence rate of up to 1% and is significantly considered a common worldwide public health concern. Commercially, several traditional formulations are available to treat RA to some extent. However, these synthetic compounds exert toxicity and considerable side effects even at lower therapeutic concentrations. Considering the above-mentioned critiques, research is underway around the world in finding and exploiting potential alternatives. For instance, marine-derived biologically active compounds have gained much interest and are thus being extensively utilized to confront the confines of in practice counterparts, which have become ineffective for 21st-century medical settings. The utilization of naturally available bioactive compounds and their derivatives can minimize these synthetic compounds' problems to treat RA. Several marine-derived compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can be effectively used for therapeutic purposes against RA. The results of several studies ensured that the extraction of biologically active compounds from marine sources could provide a new and safe source for drug development against RA. Finally, current challenges, gaps, and future perspectives have been included in this review.

Use of Turkey Meat Affected by White Striping Myopathy for the Development of Low-Fat Cooked Sausage Enriched with Chitosan. Foods 2020; 9:foods9121866. Abstract
The main objective of this research was the development of a healthy meat product from turkey meat with white striping myopathy. The effect of adding different proportions of chitosan on the qualitative characteristics, sensory acceptance, and stability of cooked sausages during storage was studied. Three treatments were elaborated (control, 1.5% chitosan, and 3% chitosan), stored for 56 days, and characterized in terms of chemical composition, texture profile analysis, drip and pressure loss analysis, and sensory analysis (after processing; day 0). In the different storage periods (0 and 56 days), the pH value, color, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and volatile compounds were evaluated. The results showed that the moisture content, lipids, proteins, and weight loss decreased (p < 0.05) and the ash content increased (p < 0.05) with the addition of chitosan. Similarly, the values of texture parameters (hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness) were higher in the sausages reformulated with chitosan than in control samples. The addition of chitosan increased the pH and yellowness (b*) values and reduced (p < 0.05) redness (a*) and lightness (L*) values. The b* values (only in reformulated sausages) and pH increased during storage, while a* showed a significant reduction after 56 storage days. Lipid oxidation (TBARS) was kept below the limits of quantification in all samples and both after processing and 56 storage days. However, when quantifying the lipid-derived volatiles, a clear antioxidant activity of chitosan was observed, which limits the release of these compounds, mainly aldehydes (hexanal and nonanal). Finally, the sensory analysis indicated that, although chitosan treatments received the lowest scores for all attributes, the reformulated samples did not differ from control sausages. Therefore, sausage containing chitosan may represent an interesting alternative for adding value to turkey meats affected by white striping myopathy and, at the same time, develop into a healthy and functional meat product increasing the proportion of fibers in one’s diet.

Abstract
Effects of ultrasound-assisted chitooligosaccharides (COS-UA) coating on the quality attributes and microbial composition of refrigerated grass carp fillets were evaluated. The results showed that COS and COS-UA coatings retarded quality deterioration of fillets during storage. Compared to COS coatings, COS-UA treated samples had lower contents of BAs, simultaneously their levels of total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), K value and total viable counts (TVC) were further decreased by 13.6%, 4.2% and 7.8% on day 12, respectively. High-throughput sequencing showed that Aeromonas and Shewanella increased rapidly in control samples and became the main microbiota at day 12. By contrast, both coatings changed the microbial composition and reduced the proportion of spoilage organisms. Based on multiple evaluations, COS-UA extended shelf life of fillets by another 2 days when compared to COS. Therefore, ultrasonic treatment could be considered as an effective supplementary to improve the preservation effect of COS-based coatings for fresh preprocessed fish.

Abstract
It has been proved that chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) has a more favorable therapeutic applications such as wound healing and anti-tumor treatment, and can affect angiogenesis. For better understanding the effect of COS on angiogenic activities at cellular level, COS with different concentration and degree of polymerization (DP) were used to culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in this work. Cell proliferation activity, cell morphology, cell migration and angiogenesis associated factor expression of HUVECs were evaluated. The results indicated that COS at a high concentration of 400 μg/mL (COS(400)) and DP of 6 (Chitinhexaose Hydrochloride, COS6) had inhibitory effect on angiogenic activities of HUVECs. Specifically, COS(400) and COS6 inhibited cell proliferation activity, cell migration, and vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) expression of HUVECs. While COS at a low concentration (<400 μg/mL) and suitable polymerization degrees (DP < 6) had little significant effect on cell proliferation, migration, and VEGF expression of HUVECs, showing dose-dependent effect. These findings provided insight for the potential use of COS, for broadening its future applications in biomedical fields and functional materials area. It also helped guide the design and synthesis of chitosan-based materials as an angiogenesis inhibitor for anti-angiogenic therapy.

Abstract
Improved physicochemical properties of chitosan-curcumin nanoparticulate carriers using microwave technology for skin burn wound application are reported. The microwave modified low molecular weight chitosan variant was used for nanoparticle formulation by ionic gelation method nanoparticles analyzed for their physicochemical properties. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures, cytotoxicity and cell migration using human dermal fibroblasts-an adult cell line-were studied. The microwave modified chitosan variant had significantly reduced molecular weight, increased degree of deacetylation and decreased specific viscosity. The nanoparticles were nano-sized with high positive charge and good dispersibility with entrapment efficiency and drug content in between 99% and 100%, demonstrating almost no drug loss. Drug release was found to be sustained following Fickian the diffusion mechanism for drug release with higher cumulative drug release observed for formulation (F)2. The microwave treatment does not render a destructive effect on the chitosan molecule with the drug embedded in the core of nanoparticles. The optimized formulation precluded selected bacterial strain colonization, exerted no cytotoxic effect, and promoted cell migration within 24 h post application in comparison to blank and/or control application. Microwave modified low molecular weight chitosan-curcumin nanoparticles hold potential in delivery of curcumin into the skin to effectively treat skin manifestations.

Abstract
An accurate and sensitive analytical method for detecting and quantifying reducing sugar ends (RSE) in chitooligosaccharides (COSs) is the key quality parameter for evaluating their structure-function relationship and potential applications. In this work, we develop and validate a novel colorimetric assay with high accuracy and precision for determining RSE content using 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH). Under optimal conditions, the stoichiometry is verified using mono-, di-, and tri- glucosamine hydrochlorides, and the dilution ratio does not interfere with the RSE content measured at 590 nm. The regression equation of glucosamine reveal a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9999). The detection limit, quantification limit, mean relative standard deviation (RSD), and recovery are 2.28 μM, 9.11 μM, 1.90%, and 98.0%, respectively. The newly developed method is potentially useful for monitoring COS hydrolysis, number average molecular weight, and chitosanase activity.

Abstract
This study was to explore the impacts of water-soluble chitosan and mixed probiotics on growth performance, intestinal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and immunity and ammonia resistance in Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimp were fed one of four experimental diets including basal diet (CON), 0.10% water-soluble chitosan diet (WSC), 0.30% mixed probiotics (MP) and 0.10% water-soluble chitosan +0.30% mixed probiotics (SYN) for 8 weeks. Results showed shrimp fed with dietary MP and SYN diets could significantly improve growth performance and feed utilization in comparison with those of shrimp fed with CON diet (P < 0.05). Acetic acid content was significantly higher in shrimp fed with all supplemented diets compared to that in shrimp fed with CON diet (P < 0.05). Compared to shrimp fed with CON diet, dietary WSC and MP significantly influenced the contents and/or activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein (TP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lysozyme (LZM) in serum, SOD, malondialdehyde (MDA), acid phosphatase (ACP) in hepatopancreas and SOD and MDA in intestine. In addition, the gene expression levels of prophenoloxidase (proPO), penaiedin 3a (Pen-3a), crustin (Crustin), serine proteinase (SP), GPX and SOD in hepatopancreas, were significantly upregulated compared to those in CON diet at some time points (P < 0.05). Significantly higher survival rate in all supplemented diets were observed after ammonia challenge (P < 0.05). Therefore, the above results indicated dietary WSC and MP or SYN could enhance intestinal SCFAs content, stimulated antioxidant capacity and immune response, and increase the ammonia resistance of Litopenaeus vannamei. Besides, the growth performance was also improved by dietary MP and SYN.

Abstract
Lack of proper postharvest management of fruits causes huge economic loss, increase poverty, hunger and malnutrition. To reduce postharvest losses, globally different postharvest technologies and synthetic chemical treatments were widely used, but some of them are reported to enhance the risk for human health and environment. Recently, oligosaccharides have attractedmuch attention because of their numerous health benefits, and potential applications in agriculture. Many previous reports demonstrated that oligosaccharides treatment improves the postharvest preservation of fruits and extend the shelf life. Oligosaccharides postharvest treatments maintained higher non enzymatic antioxidant activity, increased antioxidant activity, regulate hormone biosynthesis and delayed cell wall degradation. In this review, we systematically summarize and discuss the recent research findings concerning the preservation effects of different oligosaccharides, and their mechanism underlying delaying ripening and senescence of fruits during postharvest storage. Moreover, we provide future research direction for the utilization of oligosaccharides to improve postharvest preservation of fruits.

Abstract
Marine-polysaccharide degrading enzymes have recently been studied extensively. They are particularly interesting as they catalyze the cleavage of glycosidic bonds in polysaccharide macromolecules and produce oligosaccharides with low degrees of polymerization. Numerous findings have demonstrated that marine polysaccharides and their biotransformed products possess beneficial properties including antitumor, antiviral, anticoagulant, and anti-inflammatory activities, and they have great value in healthcare, cosmetics, the food industry, and agriculture. Exploitation of enzymes that can degrade marine polysaccharides is in the ascendant, and is important for high-value use of marine biomass resources. In this review, we describe research and prospects regarding the classification, biochemical properties, and catalytic mechanisms of the main types of marine-polysaccharide degrading enzymes, focusing on chitinase, chitosanase, alginate lyase, agarase, and carrageenase, and their product oligosaccharides. The state-of-the-art discussion of marine-polysaccharide degrading enzymes and their properties offers information that might enable more efficient production of marine oligosaccharides. We also highlight current problems in the field of marine-polysaccharide degrading enzymes and trends in their development. Understanding the properties, catalytic mechanisms, and modification of known enzymes will aid the identification of novel enzymes to degrade marine polysaccharides and facilitation of their use in various biotechnological processes.

Abstract
Pandanus tectorius fruit, a natural product rich in tangeretin and ethyl caffeate, has been reported to have potential as anti-hypercholesterolemia agent via Scavenger Receptor Class B type 1 (SR-B1) pathway. However, due to its semi-polar properties, P. tectorius extract exhibits poor solubility when used as a medical remedy. The extract’s solubility can potentially be improved through a synthesis of nanoparticles of chitosan-P. tectorius fruit extract. This can also increase the extract’s SR-B1 gene expression activity. To date, no studies of nanoparticles of chitosan-P. tectorius fruit extract and its pathway via SR-B1 have been published anywhere. In this study, cytotoxicity properties against HepG2 were explored by MTT. Then luciferase assay was used to detect their effectiveness in increasing SR-B1 activity. An in vivo study using Sprague dawley was carried out to observe the extract nanoparticles’ effectiveness in reducing the cholesterol levels and the toxicity property in rat’s liver. As the results showed, the extract nanoparticles had no cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cells and exhibited higher SR-B1 gene expression activity than the non-nanoparticle form. As the in vivo study proved, nanoparticle treatment can reduce the levels of TC (197%), LDL (360%), and TG (109%), as well as increase the level of HDL cholesterol by 150%, in comparison to those for the untreated high-cholesterol diet group. From the toxicity study, it was found that there was non-toxicity in the liver. It can be concluded that nanoparticles of chitosan-P. tectorius fruit extract successfully increased P. tectorius fruit extract’s effectiveness in reducing hypercholesterolemia via SR-B1 pathway. Hence, it can be suggested that nanoparticles of chitosan-P. tectorius fruit extract is safe and suitable as an alternative treatment for controlling hypercholesterolemia via SR-B1 pathway.

Abstract
This study includes the design of a chitosan membrane decorated with unsaturated fatty acid–based carrier system for cancer treatment and antibacterial application. For this, polystyrene-graft-polyoleic acid-graft-polyethylene glycol was prepared by free radical polymerization and characterized. Nanoparticles and caffeic acid–loaded nanoparticles were prepared by solvent evaporation technique and optimized. The short-term stability of nanoparticles was investigated at 4°C. Drug encapsulation and loading efficiency were evaluated. The chitosan membrane and caffeic acid–loaded nanoparticles embedded into chitosan membrane were fabricated. The caffeic acid loaded nanoparticles embedded into chitosan membrane showed controlled release. The mechanical properties of all samples were investigated. The caffeic acid–loaded nanoparticles embedded into chitosan membranes indicated excellent antibacterial properties against the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The anticancer activity of all the samples was evaluated against SaOS-2 human primary osteogenic sarcoma and MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cell lines by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay, the flow cytometry and double staining methods. As a result, the designed carrier system showed great potential to cancer-associated infections treatment in bone cancer cases.

Abstract
Film-forming sprays offer many advantages compared to conventional topical preparations because they can provide uniform drug distribution and dose, increased bioavailability, lower incidence of irritation, continuous drug release, and accelerated wound healing through moisture control. Film-forming sprays consist of polymers and excipients that improve the characteristics of preparations and enhance the stability of active substances. Each type of polymer and excipient will produce films with different features. Therefore, the various types of polymers and excipients and their evaluation standards need to be examined for the development of a more optimal form of film-forming spray. The selected literature included research on polymers as film-forming matrices and the application of these sprays for medical purposes or for potential medical use. This article discusses the types and concentrations of polymers and excipients, sprayer types, evaluations, and critical parameters in determining the sprayability and film characteristics. The review concludes that both natural and synthetic polymers that have in situ film or viscoelastic properties can be used to optimise topical drug delivery.

Abstract
An antibacterial polymer peptidopolysaccharide (COS-AMP) that integrates antibacterial and detection functions is constructed with a simple synthetic method. The COS-AMP is constructed by simulating the structure of peptidoglycan of the bacterial cell wall with chitooligosaccharide with intrinsic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect as the main chain, as well as a peptide polymer grafted onto its amino group. Based on the AIE effect and excitation-dependent fluorescence of COS-AMP, it is tentatively applied to multicolor imaging and quantification of bacteria. This multicolor imaging helps to match different excitation sources of fluorescent instrument for straightforward imaging and detection. The structural similarity with the bacterial cell wall component facilitates the passage of COS-AMP across the cell wall and destroys the bacterial structure, thus it has a good broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. In addition, aromatic fluorophores are not needed, and excellent biocompatibility will make it have broad application prospects.

Abstract
Herein, we described the modification of chitosan with cyanuric chloride as a mediator for preparation of chitosan-s-triazinyl-bis(2-aminomethylpyridine) and chitosan-s-triazinyl-bis(8-oxyquinoline) derivatives to be used as reagents for preparation of silver nanoparticles under ecofriendly conditions. These two reagents are convenient and effective for reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles with particle size less than 10 nm that might be suitable for industrial and medicinal applications. The formation and particle size of AgNPs are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The antimicrobial activity of the two modified chitosan-s-triazine-AgNPs was evaluated against activities against Gram-positive bacteria (M. luteus ATCC 10240 and MRSA ATCC 43300), Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli ATCC 25922 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 75853), and C. albicans. The results showed that chitosan-s-triazinyl-bis(2-aminomethylpyridine) AgNPs showed high antimicrobial activities against all the tested microorganisms, while their analogous chitosan-s-triazinyl-bis(8-oxyquinoline) AgNPs showed moderate activities.

Abstract
Chitooligosaccharides (COS) and N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) are currently of enormous relevance to pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetics, food, and agriculture industries due to their wide range of biological activities, which include antimicrobial, antitumor, antioxidant, anticoagulant, wound healing, immunoregulatory, and hypocholesterolemic effects. A range of methods have been developed for the synthesis of COS with a specific degree of polymerization along with high production titres. In this respect, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial means, along with modern genetic manipulation techniques, have been extensively explored; however no method has been able to competently produce defined COS and GlcNAc in a mono-system approach. Henceforth, the chitin research has turned toward increased exploration of chemoenzymatic processes for COS and GlcNAc generation. Recent developments in the area of green chemicals, mainly ionic liquids, proved vital for the specified COS and GlcNAc synthesis with better yield and purity. Moreover, engineering of COS and GlcNAc to generate novel derivatives viz. carboxylated, sulfated, phenolic acid conjugated, amino derived COS, etc., further improved their biological activities. Consequently, chemoenzymatic synthesis and engineering of COS and GlcNAc emerged as a useful approach to lead the biologically-active compound-based biomedical research to an advanced prospect in the forthcoming era.

Abstract
Chitooligosaccharides are oligosaccharides with many biological activities that can be used in food production for sweeteners, preservatives and humectants, among other products. Chitin, a long-chain polymer of N-acetylglucosamine and a derivative of glucose, can be hydrolyzed by applying chitinase to break down glycosidic bonds to form chitooligosaccharides. Chitinases arising from heterologous gene expression are usually linked to a 6 × His-tag to facilitate easy purification. Heterologously expressed chitinase linked to a 6 × His-tag is a transgenic element, but enzyme activity tests cannot be used to distinguish transgenic elements from natural elements. In this study, we established a rapid and easy method to detect His-tag-containing chitinase using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and ssDNA aptamers. Using this method, His-tag-containing chitinase could be detected at concentrations as low as 0.136 nM within 5 min. Color changes of AuNPs showed a positive correlation with His-tag-containing chitinase concentrations.
